Celebrating An Olympic Gold Medal – Gone Fishin’

An Albertan at heart and winner of a 2018 Olympic gold medal for Mixed Doubles Curling, John Morris, celebrated in part by taking in the Pyeongchang Trout Festival.

Morris mentioned that his 2010 Olympic gold medal experience in Vancouver was wonderful, but that this team had finished competing a day before the games were over.

“In Pyeongchang we finished with 13 days of being able to experience the culture, cheer on teammates in other sports, and spent time with family,” said Morris.

After doing some research, Morris opted to take in the Pyeongchang Trout Festival, where he took his dad and best buddy ice fishing. The group enjoyed spending time with the locals and succeeded in catching a couple of Rainbow Trout.

“I really got a rise out of experiencing the local culture and tasting the fish right there.

They even cut one into sushi which I had never fathomed trying before - but when in Rome! It was fantastic; probably one of the best fish I’ve ever tasted,” said Morris.

Morris loves Alberta for the outdoors, mountains, and warmth and friendliness of Albertans. He grew up around Ottawa and Toronto and has come to like the feeling of smaller towns better for their slower pace, warm environment, and great people. In his leisure, Morris enjoys fishing, hiking, bow hunting, and canoeing.

“I love being able to wake up and see the Rocky Mountains and elk in my yard everyday; even herding them off my doorstep. I’ll never take it for granted, and Alberta will always be a part of me now,” said Morris.

Morris also completed a chef course a few years ago and continues to enjoy cooking. Morris works to create delicious, healthy meals and often tries new recipes out for the men he works with at Rocky View Fire Services.

“Most are received well; firefighters are

a good audience to cook for,” said Morris.

Morris remembers taking his fire training in Vermilion in 2006 as one of the best summers he has had. According to Morris, he needed specialized training in the field, and Lakeland College’s Emergency Training Centre was highly recommended.

Morris felt that the instructors were amazing, and Ed Gadbois, Cam Stevenson, and Leo Tobin stood out in his memory.

One thing he loved about the program was meeting men from all over the country with similar interests. Morris’ roommate at the time, Dax Huba, is now Morris’ fire chief at Rocky View, and he and fellow student, Ryan McAvoy, remain good friends and quite often go bow hunting together.

“I loved flying under the radar and getting a genuine experience by being treated like one of the guys. The relationships you make are as important as the training; it creates a bit of a brotherhood. I still remember Thursday night Steak Frys at the Legion. I really liked playing pool and set a goal to beat my instructor, Leo Tobin, and succeeded before the end of the year which made my summer.

When asked if fire training in any way assisted his outlook or ability to perform in curling, Morris said, “What it really reinforced was the team aspect. I’ve always enjoyed being a part of a team, and utilizing people’s different skills on the field in firefighting transferred seamlessly over to my athletic career.”

Morris appreciates that firefighting is a physical job and contributes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. He never wanted a Monday-Friday, 9-5 desk job, and was drawn to firefighting because he feels that never knowing what you’re going to get keeps a person on their feet. One of Morris’ biggest contributions to his fire service is community involvement, and always enjoys giving tours and attending local schools.

“Helping to grow community bonds is a vital component to firefighting,” said Morris.

Morris noted the power of positivity in both curling and in life. He admitted to having some lows in curling, even this year and said, “Perseverance was key to not throwing in the towel. In Pyeongchang the difference was that Kaitlyn Lawes and I had good team chemistry and maintained good communication, propelling us to a gold medal.”

When asked more about what qualities help contribute to becoming a two-time Olympic gold medalist, Morris said, “Work ethic; no matter if you want to be successful in sport or in life, you have to work hard at it because nothing comes easy. Maintaining a positive attitude and keeping things in perspective is important. Things won’t happen overnight, and people will want to bring you down, but working through times of adversity, and a keeping positive is essential.

To encourage young athletes in Vermilion, Morris added, “I’m a big advocate of dreaming big and following your passions.

If you do that throughout life, you will be

successful. Don’t just go through the motions and don’t let people bring you down. There is no better feeling in the world than doing something you are passionate about.”

Trudeau Budget Fails Canadians

Ottawa, ON – Conservative Member of Parliament Shannon Stubbs issued the following statement following the release of the 2018 federal Liberal Budget.

“The Trudeau Liberals’ recent budget is a failure to deliver for Canadian families. Instead of getting their spending under control, they plan to borrow more money from hardworking Canadians – adding billions more to the national debt,” said Stubbs.

The deficit for this fiscal year is $18 billion, which is three times higher than what Justin Trudeau promised during the 2015 election. With the budget not projected to be in balance again until 2045, these additional deficits will add $450 billion to Canada’s national debt

over the next 27 years.

“Over 90 per cent of Canadian families are paying more in taxes, and after this budget, they will be paying even more.

The Trudeau Liberals won’t deliver the help for families they promised, despite a strong global economy,” said Stubbs.

Under the Trudeau Liberals, government spending has increased by 20 per cent, which is three times faster than inflation and population growth combined. This is why the Trudeau Liberals’ budget raises taxes on local business owners and their employees.

“Justin Trudeau is good at making big promises. But when he says that he wants to help middle class families, we just don’t believe him,” said Stubbs.

“It’s time for Canadians to get a break.

A Vet Show

Becoming a Veterinarian was a childhood dream of mine, and I guess it still is today. I am a fanatic vet show watcher, and one show I seem to watch more than the others is the Incredible Dr. Pol. I think it is because he doesn’t do the fancy stuff you see on the other shows with all the expensive equipment. Dr. Pol and his other veterinarians work a lot with large breed animals on farms, and you get to see how it is outside a squeaky clean vet clinic.

His practice is in rural Weidman, Michigan, and services many of the local farmers in the county. A great number of the shows often show him running off to help farmers whose cattle are in distress during labour and other medical emergencies.

The show is quite informative regarding the dangers of working with such large animals. One episode Dr. Emily was kicked in the neck during a procedure on a cow that sent her flying a good three or four feet. Another episode showed Dr. Pol and some farmers doing pregnancy checks on the herd when one unruly cow kicked her back leg straight into this poor farmer’s upper abdomen chest area. I thought for sure in the next scene we

would be informed that the farmer was rushed off to the hospital, but nope. The farmer took a few deep breaths and was back at again. It amazes me how resilient these people are, if I were kicked like in these two examples, I would be wailing like a two year old throwing the biggest tantrum, and I am sure that would be the end of cattle farming for me.

We are running our Ag Week sections in this issue and the next to salute the farmers of our agricultural communities during Ag Safety week which runs from March 11 to 17.

Here is a new way to prepare your morning oatmeal. This recipe came about from my morning habit of having eggs for breakfast, and my craving the other day for some oatmeal.

I wondered if I could cook eggs in the hot cooked oatmeal, much like eggs are cooked in tapioca pudding. To my surprise, it worked out just great. What I did was cook large flake slow cooking oatmeal, and when the oatmeal was done, I whisked three eggs and then stirred them into the cooked and

very hot oatmeal. I continued to cook the mixture for several minutes, only to discover that the eggs added a creamy texture to the oatmeal, without altering the flavor. The benefit of adding eggs to the oatmeal is that a single egg contains 6 grams of protein, so a serving of this oatmeal gives you 9 grams of protein from the eggs and 3.5 grams from the oats. Protein is important to give your breakfast staying powder and helping to preserve your muscle tissue from wasting away. Muscle tissue is needed to help your body burn fat. You can further increase the protein content of this breakfast by garnishing your oatmeal with nuts such as slivered almonds or walnuts. A tablespoon

or two of almond butter or peanut butter will also add an additional 3 – 4 grams of protein per tablespoon. Another benefit of adding oatmeal to your breakfast routine is the 3 - 4 grams of fiber in the oatmeal can be increased another 4 grams by topping the oatmeal with 1/2 cup of raspberries or blackberries or 2.5 grams with blueberries.

To add additional 2 grams of fiber per serving, add 2 tablespoons of ground flaxseed stirred into the oatmeal while it is cooking.

If you do this add an additional 1/4 cup of water. Other great toppings are bananas for added potassium, cinnamon for its blood sugar balancing effects, your favourite milk or yogurt and sweetener. Oatmeal is

An Old Fashioned Winter

to be sitting on the shelf right there looking you in the eye ready to fill you with its interesting blend of folksy wisdom, soothsaying, and science. Never sure which it is but at any rate, you wouldn’t be much of Albertan if you didn’t have a 24/7 fixation with weather because I’d be hard pressed to find another worldly locale where you need to keep basically 4 seasons worth of clothing at hand in the front door closet to change in to each day. From week to week it feels more like the first step out of bed is checking the Environment Canada forecast and second is addressing Mr. Dressup’s Tickle Closet with “what costume are we putting on today?”. My kids even know it…they watch him on DVD’s.

Now this isn’t a column on climate

change or weather fluctuations just the fact that even though we haven’t achieved being able to predict weather long term to any degree (whatever the Almanac says), in the short term we can see what is happening in a ‘to the minute high density degree’. Being an aviation buff the NavCanada ‘Prairie’ Graphical Forecast Area is always a standby to see what is coming when you know what all the acronyms mean. So it’s interesting sitting here typing as an ominously and inevitable red labeled warning accompanies a winter storm about to arrive, marching over the mountains from BC. At one time we would have been far more likely to get caught off guard by weather arriving like this and more likely to suffer the consequences.

When you get enough winters under your

belt, you get to see a few of the doozies that come along…whether this really is one of them or not. Our family always comes back to the winter of 1973-74…the trail on that story worn so deep in the retelling that it’s become like the old bison trails out in the coulee. It was memorable… and as I retold it for the umpteeenth time and asked my kids whether they had ever really seen what a blizzard looks before, all they could come up with were shrugs and Youtube. So maybe this weekend we’ll suffer through one like the good old days that they get to remember. Or maybe not.

I can well remember the last time I tried to get home in one of them too but that is a whole other story.

Stay safe and sound…and maybe we’ll see that lamb on the other end of winter.

Files of note: Vermilion RCMP responded to a complaint of a possible impaired driver on Highway 16. Members located the suspect vehicle and began an impaired driving investigation. As a result of the investigation, 35 year old Maureen Johnson of Spruce Grove, Alberta was charged with impaired care and control and refusing to provide a breath sample.

Johnson was released from custody on a Promise to Appear. This matter remains

before the courts.

Vermilion RCMP observed a vehicle driving erratically in Vermilion, Alberta after leaving a liquor establishment.

Members stopped the vehicle and began an impaired driving investigation. As a result of the investigation, 30 year old Llewellyn Smith of Edmonton, Alberta was charged with refusing to provide a breath sample. Smith was released from custody on a Promise to Appear. This matter remains before the courts.

Once again, Lakeland College is thrilled to be hosting the Little Royal Rodeo from March 9 - 11.

Several college clubs will get to feature their best work during a range of events throughout the weekend.

Upcoming Little Royal Rodeo Katelyn Ellis, who organizes the Rodeo Club said, “There will be close to 100 competitors coming from post secondary schools across Alberta and Saskatchewan. Students will originate from all across the country, but mainly western Canada.

The Rodeo Club has worked hard to

put on a well run rodeo that competitors and spectators are sure to really enjoy.

We also have buckles sponsored for each of the events that students will be competing for.”

Events on March 9, will include a western Canadian judging Competition, Ag-Citing event, cattle sorting demon-

stration, ranch roping demonstration, dog agility and stock dog demonstrations, and a Ranch Rodeo. March 10 events will include a Stockman’s steer and heifer show, slack and rodeo performance, as well as a dance.

On March 11, the slack and rodeo performance will wrap up the event.

Survey results show that business owners who have passive investments use them as a way to: Save for their retirement (71percent) Keep their business afloat during difficult economic times (65 percent) Grow their business (53 percent) Buy new equipment or technology (46 percent) “Small business owners have been clear regarding their concerns, and 94 percent urge the government to abandon the proposed changes to passive investment rules. We hope they won’t be let down tomorrow,” concluded Kelly.

These preliminary results were pulled from an ongoing survey that has received 3,697 responses from business owners and are statistically accurate within +/1.6 percentage points, 19 times out of 20. These survey results were collected between February 20 and 23, 2018.

A p p r o x i m a t e l y 15 e n t h u s i a s t i c guests attended a BodyTalk session at Lighten Up Therapy in Vermilion on March 1.

Courtney Bessette led an information session that described BodyTalk, a holistic health approach using consciousness to heal and restore the body. BodyTalk believes consciousness is at the root of everything - from physical to emotional, mental and spiritual. “ This is what BodyTalk is, it is a whole health care system rooted in consciousness based medicine,” said Bessette.

BodyTalk Founder John Veltheim created the system after living with poor health for most of his life before he discovered a simple technique that

corrected his health.

“The health care system he created didn’t involve any level of diagnosis or prescribing which is revolutionary because whether it is western, alternative or natural health care, they all involve some level of diagnosis,” said Bessette.

Bessette also per formed a small demonstration showing how a BodyTalk practitioner uses an extensive Protocol and Procedure chart to ask the body a series of questions. Once the practitioner determines what needs to be healed they lightly tap on the head, the heart and the stomach to promote healing within the body and mind.

Bessette was originally skeptical of the method herself, but after giving BodyTalk, another chance ended up transforming her life and studying the practice professionally.

VES – Grade Two Culture Fair

Dancing and games filled the gymnasium on February 26, as the Vermilion Elementary School’s Grade 2 students held a Culture Fair.

Classes had been studying different communities around Canada for the past month and had the opportunity to pick one of the counties their ancestors had come from to create a portfolio of. The research included food, sports, music, and important people to the chosen culture. Students had also learned Inuit games as Inuit had been one of the cultures learned about in Social Studies.

Students performed the ‘Hello Song’ they had learned in music class which featured them saying hello in nine different languages, as well as a Mexican hat dance, an Irish jig, and the Virginia Grade 2 students at VES enjoyed performing cultural dances on February 26. “I think the thing students enjoyed most was learning important and interesting facts about their families. Late Rodeo Clown Rode A Buffalo

Buddy Heaton, American rodeo clown and horse trainer, performed at the Lea Park Rodeo riding a buffalo in 1959 or 1960 according to Derwent’s Emil Musijowski.

The special act was performed in combination with high profile rodeos across North America.

“It was pretty interesting! People never saw buffalo in those days other than at Elk Island Park, but now people in the

area raise them,” said Musijowski.

Heaton was born in 1929, performed for over 30 years beginning at age 15, and passed away in 2011.

According to www.pressreader.com, Heaton even rode his buffalo in John F. Kennedy’s 1961 inaugural parade. The site states that he never had Secret Service clearance for that appearance, but was invited back to perform for JFK not once but twice; and also for General Omar Bradley, Winston Churchill, and Queen Elizabeth II.

Crude Protein Protein is a measure of the nitrogen content of the feed, which is utilized by the rumen microorganisms as the building blocks to produce compounds required for animal health and production. Deficient levels of protein causes

suppression of appetite often leading to energy deficiencies. The general rule of thumb is 7-9-11, meaning: 7 % in mid-gestation, 9% in late gestation and 11% after calving.

Neutral Detergent Fibre (NDF) and Acid Detergent Fibre (ADF) NDF is a measure of the total fibre content of a forage, while ADF is the least digestible portion of the fibre in a forage. High ADF and NDF levels in feed can cause a decrease in intake and digestibility preventing cattle from consuming enough feed to meet nutrient requirements. Generally, NDF values above 50% may restrict feed intake and ADF values above 28-30% in grasses and over 45% in alfalfa can impact digestibility.

Calcium:Phosphorous Ratio High levels of phosphorous (P) in the diet can inter fere with Calcium (Ca) absorption in the body, which can lead to milk fever in cows. The ratio should be within the range of 2:1 and 7:1 and is calculated by dividing the dry matter Ca by the dry matter P. Tetany Ratio The tetany ratio consists of Potassium (K), Calcium (Ca) and Magnesium (Mg) and should not exceed 2:2:1.

High levels of potassium can cause magnesium deficiencies through interfering with intestinal absorption.

Table 1 shows a direct comparison of two hay samples baled this year. Sample 1 was cut, dried and baled with one rain shower while sample 2 was cut, dried and baled with 3 rain showers. Both were a mixed grass hay.

The increased rainfall on sample 2 caused a significant drop in protein content from 11. 28% to 9.03% and energy content from 62.68% to 46.38%. Although protein content is still adequate for cows during gestation, the energy content is severely limited for all stages of pregnancy and after calving.

In addition, the increased rainfall caused an increase in undigestible fiber in the hay with ADF increased to 50.46% and NDF at 72.58%. Both are well above recommended levels and will restrict feed intake and digestibility preventing cattle from consuming enough feed to meet nutrient requirements. This restriction in feed intake will increase the possibility of a nutrient deficient diet unless other wise supplemented.

The environmental conditions under which hay is cut, dried and baled can have a significant impact on the overall quality of that feed, which is best determined through a simple feed test. A typical feed test will cost from $30.00 to $45.00 depending on which lab is chosen.

Why Ranchers Are Seeking ‘Easy Calving’ Bulls

As herd sizes grow, it seems some ranchers are leaning towards finding bulls that make raising the cattle a little bit easier, whether it be with calving or dealing with them daily.

Speaking at their annual bull sale, Soderglen Ranches Cattle Manager Jared Sherman says they have seen this first-hand in their operation.

“What we’ve seen is our clients are moving to bigger cow herds, we’ve got an increased market share by default of that,” Sherman says. “Our cow herds are growing and the traits lean towards calving ease. They lean towards less birth weight, and, as we create cattle that have less birth and more growth, that is what we really see shine.”

He says this year’s sale was another

good example of that. “ We have 75 to 8 5 - pound bir th weight bulls, with 750-plus weaning weights and big yearling weights and those outsell those 100-pound birthweight bulls,” he says.

Airdrie-area rancher Laura Vanderstoop, who raises 30 0 commercial cows with 12 to 14 bulls, says when they look for a bull, they are looking for a couple of traits.

“For us, it is about calving ease and getting live calves on the ground that are viable and healthy,” Vanderstoop says.

One-stop bull shopping Auctioneer Dean Edge says he sees a lot of buyers these days looking to improve their herd at home and they are doing that by doing their homework and going to sales where they can get

everything all at once.

“They can buy heifer bulls, they can buy performance bulls, and they can buy crossbred bulls as well for their own herd. That allows them to improve their own herd as they are keeping the better genetics around from maternal strengths and improve weaning weights on their steer calves too,” Edge says.

Crossbreed support Randy Norrie, who raises a herd of about 20 0 Charolais cross near Delisle, Sask., says they are always looking for a crossbred bull because it produces calmer and therefore easier to work with animal.

“We’re looking for easy-doing heifers off our cows to put back into our herd,” Norrie says. “ Cr o s s br e e d i n g i s s o i m p o r t a nt when you’re raising commercial cattle, you can’t just stay in a straight breed forever and ever you’ve got to have a cross in there.”

Bottom line Bull sales reflect a trend to calve ease and seek these traits at auction.

The result is larger herds with signs on increasing market share.

Bull Market Applications Open For The Beef Researcher Mentorship Program

Three researchers were selected to participate in the program this past year.

Each was paired with two mentors – an innovative producer and another industry

expert – for a one year term (ending July 31, 2018). Each of the researchers have reported very successful and valuable experiences through the opportunities provided, including: Establishing partnerships with industry and other researchers to further their research programs

Meeting several producers and industry leaders with whom they ask questions and have meaningful discussions about cattle production, beef quality and safety, and the Canadian beef value chain Attending industry events and touring farms and ranches to better understand the impacts, practicalities and economics of adopting research results The BCRC is excited to continue the program and invite applications from upcoming and new applied researchers in Canada whose studies are of value to the beef industry, such as cattle health and

welfare, beef quality, food safety, genetics, feed efficiency, or forages. A new group of participants will begin their mentorships on August 1st.

The Beef Researcher Mentorship Program launched in August 2014 to facilitate greater engagement of upcoming and new applied researchers with Canada’s beef industry.

Farming Is More Than A Job; Farming Is A Way Of Life.

As a practicing veterinarian I had the great privilege for close to 30 years of working with farm and ranch families and I will tell you that I will stack our producers in Alberta up against any producers anywhere in terms of their ability to produce wholesome, sustainable, nutritious, quality, safe food.

I have great admiration for the farm and ranch families who dedicate their lives to this amazing industry. I know firsthand the

dedication of time and effort put forth by each family member to make their operation a success.

The reality of farming is that there is not one farmer who gets his seeding done by working a 40-hour work week or gets harvest done by shutting down on weekends. I have yet to meet a cow that can plan her calving around weekends, after hours or statutory holidays. As the snow falls calving and lambing does not stop and midnight checks in the barnyard continue.

This week we pay tribute to farm and ranch families and the hours of work they do to put food on the tables of this province and indeed around the world. I also think of the contributions each makes to the economy of this province as the old saying goes, “When a farmer has money everyone prospers.”

Alberta has prospered greatly over the past 100 years from the hard work of its agriculture producers and we cannot thank Dr. Richard Starke. Photo submitted them enough for all that they do.

Ducks Call On Goats And Beetles To Fight Invasive Plants On Agricultural Land

These are a few of the more common ways Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) manages invasive plant species on projects located on agricultural land. But there’s a new agricultural land management tool in the mix now being used by DUC. Moo-ve over, space invaders! (Euphorbia esula L.) at its Frank Lake project located 50 km southeast of Calgary.

“Goats and flea beetles are natural allies,” says DUC conservation specialist Ashley Rawlak. “That’s why DUC is using goats on grasslands to help combat destructive, invasive plants through grazing.”

Prairie grasslands provide ducks, like pintails, with important plant cover for nesting. While these waterfowl aren’t equipped to stop the spread of invasive plants, the hoofed animals they share this landscape

with are.

Likely introduced to Canada in a bag of contaminated seed, invasive leafy spurge releases toxins into the soil where it grows, which prevents other plants from taking root. It also impacts the land’s capacity to hold water. “It’s a problematic weed,” says Rawluk.

Fortunately, goats love it. “They eat it like it’s candy,” she says. This year, Rawluk plans to have goats released onto grasslands at Frank Lake on three separate occasions. While small improvements can be noted after goats have been in the field, it will take several years before we see the full benefits of their grazing.

What’s In The Field Agriculture Education Initiative Launches Website

Working in collaboration with farms, ranches and program partners, Agriculture for Life (Ag for Life) is proud to announce some exciting additions to the “What’s in the field” program as it enters its third successful year.

“We are proud to unveil whatsinthefield.com, a brand-new way for Albertans to learn about this program and the value that agriculture provides,” ex p l a i n e d Ag fo r L i fe C EO L u r e e Williamson. “After seeing our signs in the field, people can visit our website to learn more about their food, the producers who grow it, and the importance of those crops and livestock to our sustainability, economy, and food system.” “ What’s in the field” is a program that helps Albertans learn where their food comes from in a new and identifiable way. In partnership with willing producers and engaged municipalities, Agriculture for Life sends out signs that identify which crop and/or livestock breed(s) are located in a farm field.

With sponsorship support, the signs are printed and delivered to producers at no cost and are visible from primary and secondary highways.

In collaboration with many producerrepresented organizations, “What’s in the field” also contains in-depth information on its website about the crops/ livestock that are in those fields – from wheat and barley to canola and cattle.

Vermilion Aquatic Centre Receives Funding

Dr. Richard Starke, MLA for Vermilion – Lloydminster constituency, presented a cheque on behalf of the Community Facility Enhancement Program to the Lakeland Aquatic Centre in Vermilion on March 2.

The Vermilion Fitness and Aquatic S o c i et y a p p l i e d a n d wa s g r a nte d $122,300 in funding from the Government of Alberta’s Community Facility

Enhancement Program. The Town of Vermilion matched the funding amount bringing the total up to $245,000 to be used toward much needed repairs to the pool.

The cheque was presented to Vermilion Fitness and Aquatic Society president Greg Smith. Also on hand was Town of Vermilion director of community services, Shawn Bell and Lakeland college vice president of academic and research Michael Crowe.

Two weeken d s ago in Calgary, J. R. Robson Marauders senior boys won the West Island College Tournament by beating the number four provincially ranked Webber Academy in the final! Then on February 27 they played at home against Lac La Biche a nail-biting high-scoring game ending in a victory of 93 to 91. The senior boys’ basketball team’s recent Snoball Classic home tournament thanks McDonalds Family Foods, Boston Pizza, Subway, Long’s Va l u e D r u g M a r t , P i z z a E x p r e s s and Lakeland Athletics for their generous contributions. Next up, the senior boys will be competing in Elk Point at Zones

with hopes of playing at the Provincial level shortly after! ​Provincial rankings were released last week and our senior boys are in sixth place!

The senior curling teams, accompanied by Mr. Zorniak and Coach Rick Mackenzie, competed in Zones in Lloydminster recently. ​T he mixed curling team—​Lawson Clyke​, ​Danielle Fedirko​,​ Carter White and ​Kera Deroo​—advanced to Provincials starting March 1, 2018, in Edmonton. They also met Mark Kennedy, a Canadian curler and gold medalist of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics!

On Wednesday, February 28, the school population looked like a sea of pink as students and staff supported antibullying on Pink Shirt Day. Several pink

shirts were adorned with a new design, created this year by fellow Grade 10 Marauder, Indira Speck. Her design was voted the winner of the 2018 pink shirt logo contest.

The Alberta Rural Education Symposium and East Central Teacher Convention are two upcoming events that will be featuring several of our students’ art!

Both located in Edmonton, many junior and senior students’ works will be showcased there for attendees to see.

Last Thursday, the annual J. R. Robson trip to Table Mountain, Saskatchewan had over 150 students enjoying the mild weather and good company on skis and snowboards. Familiar faces like Miss Christie and Ms. Quickstad came to

help out as well as several parents, Miss Borysiuk, Mr. Woodward, Mr. Bates, and myself. Thanks to Mr. Woodward for organizing this big field trip, from bussing to registrations, and booking to payments.

The annual Talent Show, hosted

by VIBE, will be held later this month.

Mrs. Speck has been on the lookout for students and staff who have hidden and/ or obvious talents, with several already signed up to perform!

We have had some nice warm winter days and the Grade 1 and 2 gym classes took advantage of that during their gym time. The students had a chance to try on snowshoes and stomp through the deep snow to play fox and goose!

The Grade 3 students wrapped up their novel study of “Sarah, Plain and Tall” by making homemade biscuits and watching the movie version of the book. Everyone loves a happy ending and this book certainly delivered it! Sighs of satisfaction were heard around the room as we read the

final page!

Grade 4’s are starting to study simple machines.

In science the Grade 5’s are learning about electricity. They learned that if you brush your hair real fast then put the brush by the running tap, the water will move. They also learned about the dangers of electricity.

Semester 2 brings Mrs. Wagner into the Grade 6 room to teach social studies. They are looking at the root of where democracy is from, Ancient Athens.

With spring, c o m es t he mu c h anticipated kindergarten registration. If you have a child who is five prior to March 1, 2019, they are eligible to register for kindergarten. Registration packages are now available at the office.

Please stop in and pick one up. If you are new to VES or would like an opportunity to spend some extra time at the school, we invite you to attend the kindergarten Information Session and Open House, scheduled on March 22 at 7:00pm. There will be activities for your children while you have an opportunity to hear about the program and ask any questions.

February 23 was a Professional Learning Day for VES staff. Teachers stayed at VES and had Sharon Steinhauer from Blue Quills do a presentation on “Restorative Practices with Classroom Circles”.

To start their day, teachers got to experience smudging and learn a little about that First Nations tradition. Support staff went to Wainwright and were able to attend two sessions each. One of the better sessions was presented by Lana Lane on supporting guided reading. She discussed strategies to use for success in reading and for struggling readers. She said research suggests that if students are writing about their reading, they solidify their understanding – “A child who reads will be an adult who thinks”.

Lana encouraged adults to put down their technology and have more conversations with their children.

The Grade 2 classes celebrated their social studies “Looking at People” unit with a Culture Fair and Potluck on February 26. The VES gym was filled with parents and extended family as they partook in a delicious lunch of various ethnic dishes that the families had brought in to share their heritage. Students entertained the

guests with a song and several cultural dances, as well as demonstrations of some Inuit games. The gym was decorated with numerous samples of student artwork from Inuit, Acadian, Ukrainian and Australian cultures.

Grade 2B had a visit from their Roots of Empathy baby on February 26. Baby Blakely did not yet have words for communication, but she was very good at using her body, face, and sounds to let the students know what she liked and didn’t like. The class recited some nursery rhymes to Baby Blakely and watched for her reactions and emotions to them. By learning how to read babies’ emotions, the students can also learn to read each other’s emotions more effectively, thus becoming more empathetic to one another. Nursery rhymes are very helpful to Blakely in developing her words or language. The Grade 2 students are very lucky to have the chance to help Baby Blakely grow her brain. The 2A’s Baby

Pink Shirt Day took place on February 28. VES was a sea of pink as we wore our shirts proudly in support of anti-bullying.

The basketball club members will be showing what they have learned so far this year by hosting the staff dream team. The action takes place during two noon hour games, on March 5 and 6.

Our second Scholastic Book Fair is coming up from March 13-19. On March 15, the library will be open to the public until 8:00pm. Come down and enter the family draw for a chance to win $25 in free books.

Thursday, March 1 saw many “Tacky Touri s t s ” wa n d e r i n g t h e school looking for the wonders of the world and the world renown St. Jerome’s Carnival.

Traveling the world was so much fun for all those who attended the St. Jerome’s Leadership Carnival on Thursday evening. The Grade 10 class did an amazing job organizing, decorating and running the Carnival.

Children of all ages enjoyed the Mini-putt in Hawaii, the Rocky Mountain Ridge Ring Toss, the New York Jr. Hoopla and the Italian Sr. Hoop-la where you could win a variety of canned good, the USA Hockey shoot and the Fish Pond Thailand. When you needed a break you could visit the English Tea House for some delectable treats and refreshments. There were also many amazing silent Auction items to bid on donated by the very supportive community of Vermilion.

The Grade 5 and 6 students hit the slopes at Kinosoo Ridge in Cold Lake on Wednesday, February 28 for a beautiful day of skiing. For many Grade 5 students this was the first time they have every tried skiing and they were so excited to learn a new skill in only one day. Thank you to Mr. Wheat for driving the students to the hill and to Mrs. Beaudette, Mr. Martin, Mr. Whelan and Mrs. Beilech for supervision and helping out the students throughout the day.

The school was an ocean of PINK on Wednesday, February 28, as many students and staff wore the colour pink to draw awareness to the issues of bullying and to remind us of the strength of kindness. Thank you to the members of the RCMP who visited St. Jerome’s to connect with our students and hand out pencils.

On Tuesday, February 27 all the elemen-

tary classes along with parents and family members gathered for February Happigrams. Ms. McDermott’s Grade 1 class focused all their energy and used their wonderful voices to perform the play “The Hat” based on the book by Jan Brett. They then sang the song, “Peace Like A River’.

Well done, Grade 1s! We enjoyed every moment of your presentation. Congratulations to all of the Happigam winners for this month.

The elementary classes demonstrated Random Acts of Kindness throughout the community during the month of February.

The Grade 3 class took a basket of homemade buns, jam and honey to the staff at the Vermilion Public Library and Post Office along with homemade cards thanking them for all they do for our community.

Ms. McDermott’s Grade 1 class treated the RCMP to homemade cards and doughnuts.

Mrs. Ryna’s Grade one students created a beautiful poster thanking the Vermilion Health Center staff for taking care of them and our community. Mrs. Lyson’s Grade 2 class thanked the ambulance members with cards and a Tim Hortons gift card. The

students in Ms. Sveenguard’s class personally delivered homemade cards to the Town Office thanking them for all the services they provide to Vermilion.

Congratulations to the Jr. High Girls Basketball team. They played Marwayne last week for the Highway 16 Championship playoffs. The girls battled hard and never gave up but were unable to come away with the victory, only losing by 3 points. Thank you to Patrick Willis and Mrs. Sveenguard for all the time and commitment they gave the team throughout the season. Also thank you to Mr. Martin for coaching the Grade 6/7 team and congratulations on their great season.

The Jr. Boys Basketball team hosted J.R. Robson on Wednesday, February 28 to continue their playoff run for the Highway 16 Championships. The boys played with great skill , determination and sportsmanship and were able to defeat J.R. and continued their playoff run.
