People travelled from as far as Edmonton to visit family in Vermilion and take part in snowshoeing and a scavenger hunt, Frisbee golf, snow painting, and tobogganing. Participants also enjoyed making bannock over a bonfire, as well as a warm cup of apple cider or hot chocolate.

“It was fun and a really nice atmosphere,” said participant Cherie Jones.

The Vermilion Wellness Coalition partnered with Be Fit For Life, VIBE, and the Town of Vermilion to host the event.

Stubbs Urges Support For Pipelines

Shannon Stubbs, Conservative MP for Lakeland Constituency, is urging Canadians to learn more about Canadian energy struggles, and to champion Canadian energy within Canada and around the world.

According to Stubbs the Trans Mountain pipeline has hit more roadblocks by the BC NDP even though it has been approved by the federal Liberals. Stubbs recently put forth a motion for the Liberals to table a clear plan on what they would do to ensure the Trans Mountain Expansion Project gets built, but it was later voted against by every Liberal member.

“It’s been alarming to see the Prime Minister missing in action and sitting on his hands while the BC NDP try to kill the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion, consequently causing an interprovincial trade dispute and conflict which has been a direct failure in his leadership,” said Stubbs.

When asked how breaking ground on the Trans Mountain pipeline project will affect the people in the Lakeland Constituency, Stubbs responded by saying, “The number one way that pipelines impact residents and oil and gas workers in Lakeland is because improving pipeline capacity is imperative for the long term sustainability of oil and gas production right across Canada. Along with

agriculture, it is the lifeblood of communities in Lakeland, and right across Alberta and the prairies which provide benefits to the entire country through revenue that goes to multiple levels of government and is shared right across the country.”

The Trans Mountain Expansion Project is estimated to bring $19 billion to Alberta.

According to Stubbs, the situation for Canada right now is “acute” because the US continues to be Canada’s number one energy customer - importing 99 per cent of Canadian oil and gas. In addition the US has removed their 40-year export ban on crude oil and are ramping up exports, as well as their recent hike of shale oil development which will assist them in becoming Canada’s number one competitor to the world market.

Another hiccup that Stubbs noted was the new Liberal legislation that removed standing tests from pipeline, mining or liquid natural gas projects; meaning that interveners wishing to oppose projects in Canadian jurisdiction on Canadian soil could be anyone from anywhere in the world. Stubbs fears that they could be considered just as important as Canadians who may be impacted communities or first nations, and that it provides uncertainty and unpredictability for energy investors.

According to Stubbs, Worley Parsons conducted a worldwide study in 2014 naming Canada number one as environmentally and socially responsible for their energy production. She went on to say that hundreds, and in some provinces, thousands of businesses do business directly with the oil sands.

“If pipelines continue to get stalled to the point where proponents abandon the project, it will have a negative impact on communities and on jobs in other parts of the country too. It’s important to put pressure on elected representatives and champion Canadian energy not only across the country, but around the world,” said Stubbs.

Irene Boudreau Long August 17, 1948 - January 5, 2018

Irene Boudreau Long passed away on Jan 5, 2018 at the Palliative Care unit of the Brockville General Hospital. Irene is mourned by her husband, Brady Long, her daughter Colleen Gowan (Chris), grandchildren Keira, Jordan and Adam, her sister Marie Smith (Leo), her brothers Alan (Sandy) and Ronald Boudreau and many nieces and nephews.

Irene was a teacher for many years in Montreal, Ottawa and Alberta and ended her career as Principal of the School of Hope, a home schooling program in Alberta with over three thousand students enrolled at one point.

She leaves behind many friends and colleagues across the country.

A celebration of her life will take place in Ontario and Alberta.

The memorial Mass in Vermilion will be held at Holy Name Catholic Church on Saturday, March 3rd at 11:00 a.m. followed by a reception and lunch at the School of Hope Brady Centre.

Donations may be made to the Palliative Care unit building fund, Brockville General Hospital (bdhfoundation.com).

Bullying: Sometimes You Have To Fight Back

With the amount of violence in this world, the last thing we need is the continuance of bullying in our schoolyards, playgrounds, workplace and social media lives.

February 28 is Pink Day, and it is a day that everyone shows their solidarity for the fight against bullying, but is it enough? Is one day a year enough to make a difference with this ongoing problem, I’m not sure it is.

According to the Canadian Institute of Health Research in Canada, at least one in three adolescent students have reported being bullied recently, and 40 percent of Canadian workers have experienced bullying on a weekly basis. Among 35 countries worldwide, Canada ranks ninth for 13-year-old children who have reported being bullied. Seventy-three percent of bullying victims received threatening instant messages (IMs) or emails in instances of cyberbullying – one of the most common

I am amazed and shocked at how many people across Canada are unaware of the importance of the oil industr y in Canada.

While following a usually friendly and funny Facebook page, suddenly the administrator began posting rude comments about Alberta, Albertans, the pipeline and oil. Many Canadians joined in to slam the people of Alberta and the oil industry. I was stunned to read about their lack of respect for all the wealth that Alberta and the oil industry have brought to Canada, in equalization payments

Those are some pretty serious numbers and some reports state that it is expected to get worse instead of better.

While I would never condone violence as a way to solve problems, I do believe that a person who is being bullied should take a stance against the person(s) who are attacking them. On the site Nobullying. com, it states “Bullies do not differentiate.

The target they choose are often those individuals who are weaker, less knowledgeable about society, vulnerable due to size or stature or simply because they are different.” and you know what, it is a very true statement. I know this because as a child I was bullied by this one particular girl and her groupies my entire elementary and junior high years. They do come after you because they perceive you as being weak and an easy target. That’s a fact! How do I know this? It’s easy. Every day I dreaded

going to school because I knew that this one girl and her pals would be waiting for me. It didn’t matter whether it was on the bus, off the bus, in school or at local playgrounds; it was relentless, and I always felt horrible. I would tell my mom about it, and she always said to me “Honey you are a bigger person to walk away then you are to stay and fight.” I took that advice happily as I was completely scared to death of them and knew I had no chance of ever winning the fight, but it was tearing me apart on the inside. Fast forward to my early 20’s. I was at a party and low and behold her and her pack was there. They instantly put a target on me, but this time I was fed up with it, I was sick and tired of cowering in a corner or running away, I decided not to cower or run away. The second she came after me with fist flying I held my ground and fought back, and for once I came out on top. We fought it out, and I won! From that day forth we never had an issue, and in fact, she would be the one coming up to talk to me when we crossed paths. Believe me, I’m not trying to encourage people to resolve the problem

So are the paved roads for her electric car, and that flight she had just taken from Montreal to Edmonton, well yes, jet fuel is another oil product. If she used a tooth brush or a cell phone, more oil products. The list is really endless. But she and so many others believe they don’t need Alberta and the oil. Even though the food we all eat involves the use of oil products for the tractors on the farm and then again for the processing and the transportation of the food to the stores. Yes and how would B.C, sell their wine all across Canada, without the use

My siblings and I grew up always teased because of our last name ‘Sainsbury.’ We were called the Blueberries or Strawberries, and while that may seem like nothing, back then when I was eight or nine years old, it was very hurtful, I always reacted to their name calling with tears. One day I discovered when I became older and a little wiser that if I didn’t give them the reaction they wanted it stopped, the name calling and laughing went away, sometimes that’s all the bully wants, they want to see that hurt, and when they don’t get the reaction they crave anymore, they leave you alone.

So, that is my reasoning for thinking the bullied needs to take a stance because the one thing I have learned in this life is that nine chances out of ten no one can help you but you. There are too many times when cases of bullying are reported to no avail, it’s simply swept under the rug and that is never going to solve or stop anything.

In Alberta, most of us see the connections, the farms, the oil industry, and the manufacturing. It is almost common knowledge, yet this is not so for so many urban Canadians.

Education is the only real solution for ignorance. For our country to work together and to prosper in harmony there must be a clear understanding of the many benefits that oil brings to all Canadian lives.

Does anyone remember what one of these looks like?

When is the last time you saw kids together playing a pickup game of shinny or playing “scrub” on a diamond without any parents around?

What would be your reaction as an adult seeing that…to intervene or smile? At one time there was a cultural consensus between all us adults, call it the village or the community or what have you, that kids needed time to explore the world with a little more leash of freedom to exercise and practice their own decision making in how they interact with the world and everyone around them. Sure…there was what you would call the ‘helicopter’ parent around then too but they were a very small minority. As a free range kid, you sort of pitied those kids because they never seemed to get out to play and have any fun. A loaded word if there ever was one.

I’m sure any kid that grew up into adolescence prior to about 1995-ish could share their experiences on what it was like having parents that would turn you out the door and say be back at dinner or supper time. It literally as simple as that. Adventure in the coulee, explore the old homestead, make bale forts, find snakes and frogs, and make a bow and arrow out of a Saskatoon sapling…stuff like that. In town you could ride your bike to the store, with a few quarters you would make a few quarters last a long time at the arcade, meet up with schoolmates and go to the playground or meet up at the school rink or diamond. You made up the rules for your games. Adults may note your presence but never really interfere unless you really brought their attention to what you were doing. For the most part, they would let you be. Now each of us could weigh in on where something

perhaps went sideways…it always does with kids because they make mistakes.

But the difference was that on the spot they had the responsibility on their shoulders to make the decisions…there wasn’t always a parent to call on a cell phone to bail them out of it or there to referee the conflict that, left to their own devices, they would learn how to sort out on their own.

It would help them to be better at it when they are adults.

Technology can be a great thing for us and has helped our world, but given the fact I grew up as a free range kid I’m bothered that the experiences I had growing up are likely never going to exist again for my kids or any other. The outside world can now reach into every corner, every room, closet, ball diamond, and ice rink.

There is really no physical separation that kids get to experience being entirely away from the outside world because of

technology. And it is sad and I don’t like it. them for.

Bull Market Ecosystem Services

Alberta Beef Producers Submitted

Last January ABP’s Cow Calf Council formed an Ecosystem Services (ES) working group to better understand and approach the area with the intent of accessing payment for producers or landowners. The idea was thought to be straightforward – having producers obtain compensation for benefits they are already providing, or could provide, that benefit society.

In 2007, an ABP task force developed some guidelines around providing and assessing ecological goods and services compensation, including delivery of compensation for ES, voluntary incentives, and without regulations.

Since then ABP, the Canadian Cattleman’s Association and the agricultural industry have struggled with acceptable levels of ES programs supported by payments to producers. The concept seems practical but payment needs to come from somewhere beyond government programs.

Examples of ecosystem ser vices provided include sequestering carbon to help remove it from the atmosphere, watershed protection, wildlife and habitat conservation, and recreational use.

Paid hunting also falls under ES when producers provide wildlife habitat, and compensation to suppor t doing so.

Producers might be providing these ecosystem services, but a market must be created for them with a willingness to provide compensation. It’s been estimated that Alberta’s seven million hectares of perennial grasslands sequester the carbon equivalent produced by one million cars per year, thus providing ES that have a substantial value. Good rangeland and pasture management help improve the soil’s carbon sequestration ability. Therefore, it seems logical that producers providing this positive impact should share some of the ES value provided by the grasslands.

Large industrial greenhouse gas emitters are legally required to reduce their level of emission by 12 percent.

They can do this by actual Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reductions that can be audited, paying into a research fund, or paying into a fund that has others reduce their carbon footprint and are compensated for it. Alberta’s agricultural producers both contribute to GHGs (about eight percent of Alberta’s total) and help reduce these emissions. Each small contribution needs to be documented, audited in some way, and paid out of the industrial emitter proceeds. A carbon offset scheme has been in place for a few years, but it’s far from being robust and it’s timeconsuming for the agricultural producer

to participate.

Alberta’s Carbon Offset program is administered by a third party following internationally recognized principals.

Most of the offsets have been generated around feedlot cattle management for improved feed efficiency or manure management, both of which reduce GHGs. The offset also uses the tillage management system, such as reduced till, or no-till, that reflect lower fuel uses and higher levels of soil carbon storage. Although the initial structure using rangeland and grassland storage seems intuitively straight forward, to date conservation cropping is the one used mostly by Alberta farmers.

Improved nitrogen fer tilizer ef ficiency also reduces GHG release, and the fed cattle protocol shortens time in the feedlot (improved efficiency) with reduced feed per gain, but this needs a substantial level of record keeping. One protocol involves converting cropland to perennial forages that would increase carbon dioxide as organic matter in the soil. This is an extension of the working group’s focus on existing soil carbon sequestration. Progress to develop this protocol has been difficult (extensive paperwork and audits) and the offset value projected was expected to be relatively small. The protocol development was discontinued. Other protocols

Other programs have been recommended to capture some of ES dollars.

One being the Alternative Land Use Services program (ALUS) that originated in Ontario and then Alberta in 2010, starting in Vermilion River County.

This is a conservation program funded through the Garfield Weston Foundation (Loblaw) with more than 50 organizations in the Canada. David Bissett, Philanthropist, recently contributed $500,000 to the fund at a presentation in Calgary at SAIT. ALUS has contracts with some producers in the province to protect wetlands and pay for adopting beneficial management practices. Projects are prioritized by the best benefit for dollars invested so not all projects receive funding. However, ALUS in Red Deer County pays $30 per acre per year for ES from pastureland or $40 per acre per year from cropland projects. ALUS information is found at alus.ca.

During the nex t month, other programs will be explored and reviewed while the working group continues the quest of opening a compensationbased ES system for producers.

Important Change To Alberta’s Carbon Offset System

An important change has come to Alberta’s Carbon Offset System. Farmers must be registered with an aggregation company prior to May 1, 2018, or they will not be able to claim credits for the 2018 year for the Conservation Cropping

protocol, the main offset of use to farmers currently. This is a change from previous years, when farmers could choose an aggregator and supply records to them later in the year.

This year, farmers will need to report the land locations they are planning to manage as no till in advance. If changes

in tillage occur during the year, these areas can be deducted at a later date.

Alberta Environment and Parks sets the rules for the offset system and are changing to greater pre-planning in the entire Alberta carbon system. More details can be found in the Standard for Greenhouse Gas Emission Offset docu-

ment. Offset projects must comply with the most recent offset credit system protocols and program requirements published

by Environment and Parks.

New Study Quantifies Impacts Of Carbon Policy On Beef Sector

A study examining the implications of Canada’s carbon pricing on the Canadian beef sector has found that unilateral implementation of the policy will create negative competitive effects for the cowcalf and feedlot sectors that are difficult to correct.

The report, ‘Carbon Pricing and the Canadian Beef Sector,’ by Brandon Schaufele, Assistant Professor, Graburn Economics and Ivey Business School, Western University, quantifies the impact of Canada’s carbon pricing policy on industry competitiveness. The study

suggests the unilateral implementation of carbon pricing results in increased costs for cow-calf and feedlot sectors – these costs will be borne by each sector with limited or no ability to pass on additional costs either up or down the supply chain.

Canada does not have a uniform carbon pricing policy, leaving each province and territory to implement its own system. The Federal Government has committed to a “Federal Carbon Pricing Backstop,� a policy that sets the minimum stringency for the provincial programs. Implemented on January 1, 2018, the policy mandates carbon prices

starting at $10 per tonne carbon dioxide�equivalent (tCO2e), increasing by an additional $10/tCO2e each year for five years, reaching $50/tCO2e in 2022.

Canada is proceeding with carbon pricing even as the other major cattle producing countries are not. Cattle markets are globally integrated, so industry is concerned that even a small increase in costs, due to a carbon levy, may jeopardize the sector’s international competitiveness.

The study recommends limited input� specific exemptions, such as those on dyed fuels used for on�farm activities, or output price�contingent exemptions as

practical safety valve mechanisms to offset potential leakage and competitiveness problems resulting from carbon pricing. However, the study cautions that even with a fuel exemption, the policy will continue to erode margins in the cow-calf sector as the price of CO2e increases.

The study, commissioned by the CCA and provincial beef producer groups, provides in-depth analysis of pre-existing carbon pricing policies in British Columbia and Quebec (2008 and 2007/13 respectively), and Alberta and Ontario.

Bull Market Canada’s Agriculture Sector Needs Help – And Foreign Workers Are Part Of The Solution

The agriculture sector is in the midst of an acute labour crisis. For Canada’s cattle feeders, temporary foreign workers are a lifeline when they can’t fill vital positions with Canadian candidates.

The Alberta Cattle Feeders’ Association (ACFA) is working hard to ensure feedlots have access to skilled labour when Canadians cannot be found.

In spite of high vacancies in the c at t l e fe e d i n g s e c tor, i t ’s b e c o m ingly increasingly difficult to access temporar y foreign workers – applying to the Temporary Foreign Worker

Program (TFWP) has been a convoluted and time- consuming process since changes were made in 2014.

How applications are made: Feedlot owners use the TF WP ’s Agricultural Stream to access workers for year-round, permanent jobs.

The current program attempts to fit a variety of industries and sectors into a one-size-fits-all design and does not recognize that a feedlot ’s need for year-round, permanent employees differs greatly from seasonal farming requirements.

I n a r e c e n t Te m p o r a r y Fo r e i g n Worker Program Primary Ag Review,

cattle feeders provided their feedback on the program, with suggestions for improvements. The feedback revealed some common trends and serious frustrations: Paper work timelines: Bringing foreign workers in under the TFWP Agricultural Stream takes six months or longer for processing of paperwork, including a Ser vice Canada Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) and the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada Work Permit. This is too long for feedlot employers needing to fill vacancies to care for and feed live cattle.

Housing: To qualify for the TFWP, feedlot employers must provide subsidized accommodation and a positive housing inspec tion. Most feedlots do not have on-site accommodation so local housing is found for workers. Employers must rent and furnish accommodation before applying — creating a months-long financial burden that feedlot owners must endure with no guarantee of a successful application. Differences between year-round and seasonal accommodation are not currently recognized and no consideration is being given to the unique needs of year-round feedlot workers.

National Commodity List (NCL): To apply under the Agricultural Stream, the feedlot operator must select one commodity, or production stream, per application. Workers brought in under the program are then only allowed to work within that one commodity. The rule doesn’t realistically fit with feedlot operations, where workers typically have responsibilities that fall under two or more of these commodities. LMIAs are being refused for this reason.

Changing requirements: Job postin g s mu st refere n c e t h e fe d er ally regulated wage rate. When the wage rates are changed, notification is not provided so if the wrong rate is advert i se d, t h e n LMIA a p p li c at i o n s are often declined multiple times, at no fault of the feedlot employer. Endless back and forth follow-up with Service Canada can result in the loss of potential candidates because feedlots are unable to indicate to these workers when approval will actually, if ever, take place.

A disconnect between federal and provincial rules: Provincial frame works often don’t align with federal frameworks. In some provinces, formal paperwork has to be submitted to the province in order to begin the TFW application process. When the TFW application ends up being a long, drawn-out process, the provincial paperwork can actually expire, leaving the feedlot to start the entire process over again.

Im migr at i o n ac c e s s re str i c t i o n s for feedlot workers: Under Canada’s merit-based immigration system it is very difficult for feedlot operators and processing plants to keep highly skilled workers in the country – even when they have vital experience and on-thejob training. Federal and provincial governments must recognize farm and food workers as important and prioritize them for immigration.

ACFA works with the Canadian Agricultural Human Resource Council and the Agriculture and Agri-Food Labour Task Force to research and bring these issues forward. It is crucial that the uniqueness of feedlot operations is taken into consideration and that blanket requirements are removed from the program.

In a recent post we wrote about t h e A l b er t a Im m i g r at i o n N o m i n e e program, whereby businesses can apply for permanent resident status for their temporary foreign workers. But changes to that program could also make it harder for feedlot operators to keep certain highly skilled workers in the country.

Grain Grade Disputes And The Harvest Sample Program

Collaboration is key to ensure the grain supply chain in western Canada remains efficient. The grain handling and transportation system generally operates well to meet the needs of most producers and industry stakeholders. However, service issues and disputes can occasionally happen.

“One area of potential disputes is disagreement on assessments of grain grade and dockage between producers and primary elevators,” says Chuanliang Su, domestic policy analyst, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ”Although it is uncommon to see grade/dockage disputes, it is important for producers to know what process and procedure to follow when they do occur, so these disputes can be settled fairly and in a timely manner.”

The federal government oversees

the Canada Grain Act and related grain regulations. If producers disagree with a licensed primary elevator’s assessment of grade and dockage, they can dispute the assessment through the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC). Producers can ask elevators to send representative samples of their grain to the CGC to assess grade and dockage. Then, payments to producers will be made based on those estimates made by the CGC.

The CGC has also developed the Harvest Sample Program to help producers assess the quality of their grain. When producers sign up for this voluntary program, they receive annual Harvest Sample kits containing envelopes for sending in grain samples. The CGC will conduct grade, dockage, and quality assessments for the participating producers at no charge.

Because of the smaller sample sizes and

because the samples are taken by producers instead of the CGC, these results are considered unofficial. However, many producers believe this program provides useful information, especially at delivery times when producers and primary elevators discuss grain quality. Producers are encouraged to use this program, as it is helpful, particularly for those who need to travel extra kilometres to shop around for better grades prior to their grain deliveries.

taking a stand against bullying On February 28, 2018, the national anti-bullying campaign Pink Shirt Day, now in its tenth year, will be addressed by schools, workplaces and individuals across the country.

Participants will rally against bullying that takes place online and in schools, homes and workplaces through a variety of activities and events. Bullying continues to be a problem for youth and adults in every province, with reported incidents highest among those in elementary and middle school.

The Pink Shirt Day initiative is an important one as bullying can have a lasting impact on entire communities. Both aggressors and victims of bullying are at risk for a number of further developmental complications, with aggressors being far more likely than their peers to use drugs and alcohol and engage in criminal activity, while victims are more likely to develop stomach aches, headaches and mental health problems. All parties involved in bullying are more prone to missing school, losing interest in scholastic and extracurricular activities and underperforming academically. Both groups are also at greater risk for suicide.

The origins of Pink Shirt Day In 2007, Travis Price and David Shepherd, two teenagers attending a Nova Scotia high school, witnessed another student being bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school. The two young men went out and bought 50 pink t-shirts and passed them out to their peers, thereby encouraging the entire school to take a stand against bullying. The story made the news, word spread, and the first national Pink Shirt Day was observed the following year. A decade later, Pink Shirt Day has raised over $1.8 million for anti-bullying programs across

Making Farm Decisions Easier

Keeping records and doing comparisons takes time and effort, and most of us prefer to be outside getting things done than being inside doing paperwork. Your time is limited so you want to be sure added paperwork has advantages and helps you focus on maintaining or improving the important things outside. Keeping detailed records and benchmarking does.

Producers who use benchmarking have higher production with an average of 60 more lbs of calf weaned per cow exposed (Manglai, 2016). Assuming a herd with 100 exposed cows, this is the equivalent to an additional 6,000 lbs weaned for the herd (+11%) valued at $13,200 per year in a high price environment (550 lb calf at $220/cwt), and $9,600 at long-term average prices ($160/cwt).

It has been noted by economists that a major challenge facing North American cow-calf producers is the development, understanding, and use of their own farm production cost and returns information.

It is critical for producers to keep records and use their ‘own farm facts’ in making knowledgeable business management decisions.

Whole farm financials only provide a starting point on the overall financial health of the operation. This high level view of your farm’s financial situation can be evaluated with four major statements: Net Worth Statement – Summarizes

the property and financial assets owned, the debts owed, and the net worth of the business at a point in time Net Income Statement – Summarizes the income generated, the expenses incurred, and the net income earned by the business during a period of time.

Statement of Cash Flows – Summarizes all the sources and uses of cash by the business during a period of time.

Statement of Owner Equity – Shows how net worth changed from the beginning to the end of the year.

It is useful to look at the rate of return to farm equity (ROE) which represents changes in your retirement fund and capacity to finance farm expansion and/ or improvements. If ROE is low, you may have to ask whether your operation can support your retirement and/or improvement plans.

Whole farm financials can tell you if there is a problem, but they provide limited direction on where to focus efforts in the coming year. For example, they don’t offer direction on which enterprise (cow-calf, replacements, backgrounders, grassers, hay, pasture, etc.) you should focus on reducing costs or improving productivity in order to reach a higher ROE. Economists stress the importance of calculating the per unit cost of production. For example, cow-calf producers should divide total input costs by the total pounds of calf weaned to yield the unit cost of production or break-even

price on calves. Calculating per unit cost of production requires having both your financial and production data on hand.

Knowing per unit cost of production helps in developing a marketing and risk management plan. Sitting down and making a plan now can make decisions during the busy production season easier and gives peace of mind. Although agriculture in general has a hard time getting exact numbers throughout the production year because things are constantly in flux, estimates are better than no data at all so don’t let the inability to determine exact numbers stop you from calculating an approximate per unit cost of production.

Having per unit cost of production data also ensures that you take into account the cost of achieving higher productivity for any one measure. Sometimes you have to spend some money to make more money, but you’ll want to be careful your extra investment pays off. Chasing productivity benchmarks without the financial picture can be detrimental.

For example, if increasing reproductive productivity by 2% costs 3% per cow, the net increased revenue may be positive, but if it costs 4% more per cow, the net return may turn negative. You need to record and consider both financial and productivity information.

When markets are stable, and finances are well in the black, it can be tempting to “coast” and not critically analyze your information and decisions. Keeping costs

under control during high priced years takes discipline and careful monitoring, but those who take advantage of high priced years to improve their operations and strengthen their balance sheets reap the reward by being more resilient during low price years. Record keeping and benchmarking can help in that objective.

Record keeping and benchmarking help a producer identify productivity gaps and make management changes to improve profitability.

Record keeping includes: Production records – cattle inventories, pregnancy rate, birth date, birth weight, weaning weight, weaning rate, pounds weaned per cow exposed, death loss, culling rate, pasture or feed usage, feed inventories, animal health treatment records, treatment rates, etc.

Operational records – overhead, unpaid labour hours, etc.

Financial records – expenses, revenue, assets, liabilities, etc.

When making management decisions, it is important for producers to identify the information they need, and tailor their record keeping system to suit their needs.

A complete set of detailed records ensures that as issues from today are addressed and new ones come up in the future, you have your own set of comparisons on-farm to look back on. Many of the records are also useful or necessary in programs like Verified Beef Production Plus.

Bull Market Continued from page 14 Benchmarking is the practice of comparing one’s own operation number s (produc tivit y and finan cial) against other farms with similar enterprises; this can use a regional or provincial average. A common set of cow-calf production benchmarks are the “GOLD” indicators: Growth, Open cows, Length of calving season, and Death loss of calves.

Results from the 2014 Western Canadian Cow-Calf Survey provide the following GOLD benchmark targets: Growth measured as a percentage of pounds weaned per mature cow weight at 43 percent or better, Open cows to be less than 7%,

Length of calving to be 63 days or less, and Death loss of calves to be less than 7%.

H ow d o e s yo ur o p er at i o n’s GOLD indicators compare to these 2014 Western Canadian averages?

Comparing to more regional benchmarks would be even more beneficial. Provincial averages that take numbers from operations at opposite ends of the province with winter feeding periods ranging from 100 to 160 days can create difficulties in making comparisons, but even if there is no benchmark available for a particular measure, keeping records is still beneficial for monitoring your own operation year over year so you can see improvements or areas that are slipping.

Remember that oftentimes a focus on production maximums (like reproductive ef ficiency) and minimums (like death loss) do not result in optimal profitability because of tradeoffs with per unit costs. Production measures should always be evaluated in terms of overall profitability.

In June 2015, a small survey of 67 cattle producers in the prairie provi n c e s fo u n d t h at m ore t h a n 9 0 % of the respondents recorded bir th dates and kept individual ID, calf IDs linked to dam ID records, and culling/ death loss records; and 86 percent of respondents kept health records.

However, only 41-48 percent of the respondents kept records on bir th weight, weaning weight, or had more detailed record keeping. The survey repor ted that only 40.6 percent of

respondents keep detailed production records and only 36.7% indicated that they were familiar with and used benchmarking (Manglai, 2016).

Producers who were more likely to use and keep detailed production records had more years of experien c e, were ol d er, set pro du c tion goals and were learning oriented (o p e n - m i n d e d a n d c o m m i t te d t o learning). Learning orientation and the use of a banker/accountant also positively impacted the use of benchmarking.

The sur vey also found that Saskatchewan and Manitoba producers were less likely to use detailed record keeping than producers in Alber ta; Manitoba producers were more likely to use benchmarking.

The reason behind these regional differences could be explained by differences in extension programs t h at a r e ava i l a b l e i n e a c h p r ov ince. Ex tension programs provide resources and support in developing record keeping systems that covers the needs of today as well as into the future.

It is not surprising to find a low proportion of producers in the prair i e p r ov i n c e s u s e b e n c h m ar k i n g as the availabilit y of benchmarks h a s l ar g e l y d i s a p p e are d o u t s i d e of AgriProfit$, which is a free - ofcharge program run by Alberta Agriculture and Forestr y. Par ticipating in surveys and extension programs will help ensure that benchmarks are developed and available.

This sur vey along with the Ontario and Atlantic Cow- Calf Sur veys (the ON and ATL sur veys are now closed) will provide benchmarks that producers can use for comparison.

Members of the community gathered in support of the Stan Hartwell Memorial Award presentation made at the Vermilion Stadium on February 23.

Celebrating greatness In Vermilion Minor Hockey, the Stan Hartwell Award is traditionally presented to the most dedicated volunteer. Nominated by the community or minor hockey participants, the recipient is then determined by the board.

“This year’s recipient has been a dedicated assistant coach and then head coach for a number of years, despite not having any children of his own. He freely gives his time, knowledge and encouragement to the boys on his teams,” said Lisa Rochford, Vermilion Minor Hockey President.

The Vermilion Rotary Club and Interact Club fundraised to eradicate Polio by attending four Vermilion schools and giving students the opportunity to donate $1 and have their pinkie dyed purple on February 22.

Polio Poliomyelitis (polio) is a paralyzing and potentially fatal disease that still threatens children in some parts of the world. The poliovirus invades the nervous system and can cause total paralysis in a matter of hours. It can strike at any age but mainly affects children under five. Polio is incurable, but completely vaccine-preventable.

PolioPlus In 1985, Rotary launched its PolioPlus program, the first initiative to tackle global polio eradication through the mass vaccination of children. Rotary has contributed more than $1.7 billion and countless volunteer hours to immunize more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries. In addition, Rota-

ry’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by donor governments to contribute more than $7.2 billion to the effort.

Global Polio Eradication Initiative The Global Polio Eradication Initiative, formed in 1988, is a public-private partnership that includes Rotary, the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and governments of the world. Rotary’s focus is advocacy, fundraising, volunteer recruitment and awareness-building.

Polio Today Today, there are only three countries that have never stopped transmission of the wild poliovirus: Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan. Just 37 polio cases were confirmed worldwide in 2016, which is a reduction of more than 99.9 percent since the 1980s, when the world saw about 1,000 cases per day.

Challenges The polio cases represented by the remaining one percent are the most diffi-

cult to prevent, due to factors including geographical isolation, poor public infrastructure, armed conflict and cultural barriers. Until polio is eradicated, all countries remain at risk of outbreaks.

Ensuring Success Rotary will raise $50 million per year over the next three years, with every dollar to be matched with two additional dollars from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. These funds help to provide much-needed operational support, medical personnel, laboratory equipment, and educational materials for health workers and parents. their spacecraft, the students informed their classmates of the name of their alien, its planet of origin, and why the alien was created/dressed the way it was. The class really enjoyed learning about other planets and introducing their aliens.

The grade three students enjoyed trying a variety of foods from Peru as they complete their unit on Peru. They sampled a variety of potatoes, which there are 4,000 different varieties in Peru. They also sampled ceviche, taco chips, cheese sauce, boiled eggs and meat skewers.

Many of the students were brave enough

to try all of the foods and found them very delicious.

Olympic fever has hit St. Jerome’s. The elementary students have been researching Canadian Olympic Athletes and writing reports about them and the events they are competing in, keeping track of the Canadian Medal Count and participating in a variety of outside activities throughout the past two weeks. Members of the Vermilion Rotary Club visited St. Jerome’s on Thursday, February 22, as part of the Purple Pinkie Project. This project promotes the Rotary International goal of eliminating

Friday, February 16 was the 100th Day of School at St. Jerome’s.

Kindergarten to grade five students participated in a variety of special activities throughout the day. Grade one students brought in their “100 Day” project. There were 100-legged centipedes, 100 buttons, marshmallows, lego pieces, jelly beans, etc. There were 100 balloons hanging in their classrooms, and they did many “100” activities throughout the day. The grade four students created portraits of themselves in 100 years, grade three students dressed up like 100-year-olds and grade two students wrote paragraphs entitled “When I’m A 100 Years Old”.

High School student Council showed Random Acts of Kindness to the elementary staff last week when they covered our classrooms during the lunch hour supervising the students while they ate. This gave all the elementary teachers and educational assistants to take a longer lunch break and spend time reconnecting with each other.

Recently, our grade 6 Spar tans researched a planet within our solar system.

With this information, they created an alien, at home, from recyclable materials that would be able to successfully survive on their planet. On February 28, everyone is encouraged to practice kindness and wear pink to symbolize that you do not tolerate bullying. This event started in 2007 and we want to keep it going.

February 21 was the 100th day of school. Each Grade 1 student made a project to represent 100. It was thrilling to see so many creative minds at work.

There were projects with 100 stickers, band aids, googly eyes, pompoms, pennies, bottle caps, and many edible items like macaroni, sugar cubes, and fruit loops.

Celebration Day at VES took place on February 21. There were opportunities in classrooms to view several student samples of work, do science experiments, work out math problems, try your hand at a musical instrument, and par take in a makerspace project. children have been learning so far this year. As well, it was great to see so many families go into the photo booth to have their family pictures taken with the old desk and books.

Grade 1 had their Winter Fun Day o n Fe b r u a r y 2 2 f r o m 10 - 3 a t t h e Provincial Park. They spent the day tobogganing, cross countr y skiing with Vermilion Ski Club member, Mrs. Page, and exploring the park with Conservation Officer, Mr. Gary Walsh.

This exciting trip related to targets in the Grade 1 Physical Education and Science Programs of Studies. A hot dog lunch was enjoyed by all. Thank you to the parent volunteers for helping make this day more special.

On Februar y 22, both the Vermilion Rotary Club and the Interact Club were at our school to help eradicate polio. For a $1 minimum donation, students and staff got their pinkies dyed purple to show their support of this worthy cause.

Alison Jackson Racing Around The World

Ve r m i l i o n ’s A l i s o n J a c k s o n i s preparing to fly to Europe where she w i l l c o m p e te i n s eve r a l Wo m e n’s World Tour races with her new team, TIBCO - Silicon Valley Bank.

Jackson spent Januar y racing in Australia, and February with a training camp in California and racing in Arizona. From March-May, Jackson will compete in the Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, China, and the USA. “A race I want to target this year is the Canadian National Championships at the end of June in Saugenay, QC. The winner of the Canadian National Championships gets the honour of a special kit (race suit) with the maple leaf on it to wear for the whole year to represent this great accomplishment,” said Jackson.

Jackson believes strongly in hard

work, which is something she acquired from her background in agriculture and rural living. She also believes that a good attitude goes a long way and that it’s important to balance hard work with having fun.

Last year, Jackson raced full time in Italy, but this year is racing for an American team and will be coming back between races.

“I am excited to use my European experience to kick-butt at these races and then have the benefit of downtime with my family in between,” said Jackson.

Bull Riding School

Scott Schiffner, the Johansen Brothers and Scott Byrne guided a bullriding and bull fighting school on February 23 - 25 at the Lakeland College Equine Centre in Vermilion. Students of all levels each had the opportunity to bull ride, either learning new skills or improving on old one.

Other students participated in bullfighting; learning how to distract to the bull to give the rider a chance to make it to safety after being bucked off or dismounting. Photos Shawna Chernichen

First in junior speeches was Kara Delisle with ‘Why Dogs Are Better Than Cats,’ in intermediate Hanna Devos with ‘An Extra Plate’ and in senior Parker Carlson with ‘The History Of Rock And Roll.’ In the presentation category first in junior was Destinee Mcgrath with Baseball vs. Softball, in intermediate Billy Mcgrath with Star ting A Model Farm and in senior Derek Hryciuk with Leave The Hotdogs At Home. The Snowmobile Project has done some very interesting things including learning about Fuel and what it can do

if you use the wrong fuel or if you let it sit too long. They have also done some hands-on things like fixing a patch in a snowmobile hood and learn how to clean a clutch. The Survival Project has been busy as well. They have learned about traps and how to make a snare.

Earlier in the year they learned how to use a compass and had to use it to find where they would have lunch that meeting.

Our Shooting Project has thoroughly enjoyed shooting all types of firearms at the Vermilion Gun range. They have said one of the best parts of the shooting project has been shooting clay

Our canine project has had lots of fun with their dogs while doing different things like obedience, sniffer dog games, and grooming. Their dogs have come a long way from the first meeting.

L ast but not least our new Beef Production Project has been up to many interesting things, including touring the livestock emergency trailer and did some feed tests. So far it has been a great winter, and we are looking forward to our Achievement Days.

The Ray Blackmore trio played to a full house at Folk Club on February 24 at the Vermilion Legion.

The Vermilion Folk Club was ecstatic to have the talented Trio perform. “ We are really ha p py to have a member of our community share some local talent with us. Ray has adopted us and we are sure glad he did” said Rod MacMillan.

CFCW Critters Take On The Rusty Musty’s

Excitement filled the Dewberry Arena as the Dewberry and District Agricultural Society hosted a fundraising hockey game featuring the CFCW Critters and the Rusty Musty’s on February 22.

With the Critters mascot playing in uniform and several antics up their sleeves, the Critters roused the crowd and won the game. Much like the Harlem Globetrotters in basketball, the entertainment provided was a hit with the audience and according to www.cfcw.com, over $10,000 and a government grant was raised to support the Dewberry Arena Project.

The Critters had been the arena’s first fundraiser in 2012 and wanted to come back and see the finished building. A newly formed alumni team (the Rusty Musty’s) were up for the challenge and added guest players MLA Dr. Richard Starke and County of Vermilion River Councillor Leslie Cusack to their roster.

“To have the Critters back is pretty

special. The game provided an all-star matchup like you’ve never seen! The game got a little “rough” at one point and every player from the Musty’s team ended up in the penalty box! The Critters popped five in the net as the Musty’s failed on the penalty kill! The Musty’s handed out some punishment of their own when the Critter was restrained and “put under” at center ice while veterinarian Dr. Starke performed a procedure to eliminate some of the Critter’s fight!” said Holly Holmen, Building Project Coordinator and Dewberry and District Agricultural Society Secretary.

Brenton Romanchuk, a minor hockey member, played as a guest on the Critters team and was part of a three generational game with his dad (Brad Romanchuk) and grandfather (Brent Romanchuk) playing for the Rusty Musty’s.

Brent Romanchuk won a 50/50 of $560 and chose to donate the money back to the arena project, Allan & Frances Stone won a Texas Mickey draw, Presly Bensmiller won a Chromebook in a free student

draw, and several raffle prizes were also distributed.

“All in all - a great night. We’re thankful to the community for their continued support,” said Holmen.

Marjorie passed away peacefully on January 30, 2018 at Vermilion Extended Care at 91 years of age. Marjorie is survived by three sons; Floyd (Marie) Hansen, Gary (Debbie) Hansen, Murray Hansen (Michelle), 6 grandchildren; Corinne (Ian), Scott, Aaron (Sanna), Jennifer (David), Taylor (Anjana), Presley (Mike), Mitaya and Mikasa and 10 Great grandchildren; Kate, Frances, Matthew, Camille, Annabelle, Xavier, Nicolas, Easton, Connor and Adelyn.

Marjorie was pre-deceased by husband Clayton Hansen, parents Gaston and Annie Garner, mother and father-in-law Ella and Peter Hansen and siblings Louie, Edmond, Ernest, Ervin, Bernie, Melie and Marie. Her funeral service was held on February 9th at Holy Name Roman Catholic Church in Vermilion, interment at Dewberry Cemetery and luncheon at Dewberry Hall.

The family of Marjorie Hansen would like to say thank you for all the kindness shown at the time of her passing. Thank you to Father Andrzej Lukasewqicz, Dianne Samson and all the support staff at Holy Name Roman Catholic Church.

Thank you to the staff at Vermilion Extended Care for exceptional care in her greatest time of need, and to everyone for all the visits. Thank you to the pallbearers, Crossroads Funeral Chapel and the Greenlawn Goodwill Ladies for the wonderful lunch. Thank you to everyone for their acts of kindness, flowers, cards and warm wishes at the service.

Showing their appreciation to the community and support for our area seniors, the Western Communities Foundation is pleased to contribute $5,000 to the Vermilion & District Housing Foundation Capital Campaign .

The Vermilion branch of Western Financial made the request on behalf of the VDHF Capital Campaign and Helen Whitney, Vermilion Chairman of the Western Communities Foundation, was pleased to announce that the application was successful. “It’s a very important project for our community and one that we very happy to support,” said Whitney.

The grants are available for building infrastructure in our community and the Vermilion branch has been successful in securing funding for projects including improvements to the ball diamonds and now, the seniors’ Brenda Lee, Volunteer Chair of the VDHF Capital Campaign, accepted the donation from Helen Whitney, Vermilion Chairman of Western housing project.
