Fix Auto opened for business in Vermilion on January 15 and will be hosting a Grand Opening on February 23, from 11:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. The Grand opening will feature tours of the new shop as well as a beef on a bun lunch with refreshments.

Owners, Nick and Stacey Wight, are excited about the new venture and what it offers to Vermilion. Nick ran Vermilion Auto Body for the past eight years and has switched locations to join the Canada-wide franchise so that he could of fer his customers a well rounded auto repair experience.

The new shop, located at 4512 4 5 S t r e e t i n Ve r m i l i o n , h a s b e e n completely renovated to allow more office space, updated washrooms, a paint booth, state of the ar t mixing room and a new paint line. The shop also features a wedge clamp pulling

Within the next six months, they will offer a full aluminum repair facility.

They will also have the ability to do pre and post scans of vehicles and will offer detailing.

Lighten Up Therapy And Wellness

Lighten Up Therapy and Wellness opened a new retail location at 493150 Avenue in Vermilion on February 1.

They are open to suggestions of product lines that the community would like to be brought in.

The building also houses a group

space for classes and workshops that is available for rentals, as well as four practitioner rooms. They will of fer BodyTalk, Clinical Hypnotherapy, and perhaps massage and reiki. In the future, they will be offering an infrared sauna with a shower on site, and one of the practitioner rooms is still available for rent.

Vermilion Regional Breakfast Sparkles

T h e Ve r m i l i o n R e g i o n a l B r e a kfast commenced on February 7, at the Regional Centre. After a delicious breakfast, ‘Oh Canada’ was sung and a blessing was given. The main event was guest speaker Rachel Miekle, CEO & founder of Hillberg & Berk.

Born and raised in Regina, Miekle showed early signs of entrepreneurship by taking rocks from her neighbour’s flower beds, washing them and then trying to sell them back to her neighbours. She also had a paper route and attributes a lot of her company’s foundation pieces to this job including customer service, supply chain management, efficiency and ethics.

“If you have what it takes to deliver papers in the prairies in the winter you might have what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur,” said Miekle.

After high school Miekle decided to attend a business school at the University of Regina but was unsure of what direction she wanted to apply herself. Being someone who is passionate about working with her hands, she taught herself to sew and started making jewellery but never considered it as a career.

“Living in Saskatchewan, the concept of starting a fashion based jewellery company and it being successful didn’t

enter my mind,” said Miekle.

After graduating from university, Miekle obtained a position at Women Entrepreneurs of Saskatchewan intending to learn how to become a successful entrepreneur.

After seeing a pattern of failure she came to understand what not to do in business.

During this time Miekle was still making jewellery and giving it away, not thinking that she could be selling it.

A friend suggested she attend a nursing convention as a vendor to try selling some of her jewellery; she sold out of all her products in three days and was busy with orders for three weeks. This was the turning point for Miekle.

One year later Miekle quit her full-time job and focused on the jewellery business.

She had a couple wholesale accounts, one employee and was working from the kitchen table.

Miekle was invited to the gifting lounge at the 2011 Oscars. It was a tough deciion whether she would go. It was a huge expense and she had to give away all of her jewellery, it was a big risk but in the end Miekle decided it was too good of an opportunity to pass up. Unfortunately, the gifting lounge did not go as planned. In the end Miekle did have one piece of jewellery worn on the red carpet. The publicity her PR agency was able to generate from her story was what increased her business.

Miekle auditioned and succeeded in pitching her company on ‘Dragon’s Den’ in the show’s third season. Initially she was turned down but later that day she received a phone call asking her to come back and pitch it again, and she was able to close the deal.

After this success, Miekle suffered a few setbacks with the turn in the economy and a few bad business choices. She decided to take a different look at the business and decided what worked well was their appointment only show room, which was always busy. This led her to believe that opening a retail location should be her next step.

The year the retail store was built was also the year Miekle’s father was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS).

This caused her to step back from the business to spend as much time as possible with him. A month after he passed away, Miekle’s daughter was born, giving her something positive to focus on during that difficult time.

Being away from the company for almost a year, Miekle realized that things were starting to fail. When she came back, she decided to change the way she marketed her brand, using the strategy of women for women who tell amazing stories. Changing the way jewellery was marketed to something so different, by encouraging

women to buy jewellery for themselves and women empowerment which caused her business to flourish. In the next four years, Miekle’s business went from $1 million to $20 million with seven retail locations in Saskatchewan and Alberta. She is hoping to cross Canada one market at a time.

With Miekle’s new approach, she was asked by the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan to design a broach for Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. Miekle ended her story saying “look at your future with optimism for opportunity, for sharing your sparkle and just believe your sparkle is important and needs to be shared.”

Sorry folks for the missed columns, I have been having issues with the home computer and internet.

I really need someone who knows this computer stuff better than I to work on them to get me set up better.

I am spending a lot of time outdoors mostly with the furbabies, but I am happy, ice fishing is slow, so it seems the fish have gone dormant and are hibernating until spring, the snow is poor and nonexistent in many areas.

I have been spending most of the entire day with all the pups running, I hooked up the sled several times, but trails are hard to find where there is a significant amount of snow for the sled and too much hard crusty snow for the summer cart.

Around The Campfire

We recently got a few nice snow falls, the first just drifted so bad it was bare in areas, and three foot deep drifts in other areas, my property bush is one big drift, which made it hard to take the pups for a walk. But it is a perfect scenario to try out the new modern snowshoes the wife gave me last Christmas, all I have to say is wow, I wish we had these snowshoes years ago, so easy to put on, so easy with their compact and light design to walk. I had bought a set of adjustable hiking poles, also lightweight and made of strong carbon material, they have interchangeable ends on them for all terrains and use including snow tips, perfect for this adventure.

The modern snowshoes are a dream for deep snow; I had so much fun we made trails for hours, we did the whole property several times, I had the whole crew of pups with me which at times resulted in

Most of them followed my trail, some a little too close, which when moving at the speed of snowshoe limit, a 100 lb plus pup stepping on the back of the snowshoes caused an immediate stop, usually resulting in a face break in the snow. But we had a blast and tried to get out every day, take my word for it, with the modern snowshoe’s anyone can head out on a little outdoor adventure that is a lot of fun, I walked in areas with ease where the snow was so deep pups were disappearing in the snow. It was a great exercise not only for me but for all the fur babies including Miss Oohohh, who is pregnant and needs to keep active, with the last snow we can get the dog sled out if we can make decent trails.

We did get some sled practice in, as with the cold spells lately we have been going through a lot of firewood, after dragging out a few loads of standing dead trees I thought what am I doing, the dogs are with me and just snooping around.

So I dug out an old flat bottom cargo sled made for pulling with manpower rather than a machine. I hooked up the two last year’s pups Miss Noel and Sir Mukluk to the sled, and they pulled out my firewood like the sled was empty, and I cut the trees in six-foot lengths and pilled it high, the sled weighed several hundred pounds. They enjoyed the pull, and I was relieved of the aches and pains of the all the hard work by myself, it was not only great training for the dogs, but the pups seemed to be having fun working, so we will make this a regular activity.

With all the cold weather lately it was a real chore with drinking water for the dogs, even with hot water poured in their bowls it froze solid in an hour, even with heated dog houses, so I bought a pile of electrically heated water bowls from “Princess Auto.”

The bowls hold a gallon and a half of

fresh water, have a chew proof cord, and are self-regulated for heating the water to perfect room temperature, including a self-shut off when it gets warmer. The bowls are very strong and well made, also very reasonable in cost, I highly approve and recommend these heated water bowls for any outdoor pets, I certainly will have many on hand every winter from here on.

As of today there are only 36 sleeps before the birth of Miss Oohohh’s puppies, it is coming so fast, and I am so excited, she is starting to show and is very healthy although a little moody and fussy day to day on some foods.

I am already fully prepared and ready for the new fur babies, I bought a new big kiddy swimming pool which I will fill with straw and use as a whelping box, I will move her into the shop when it gets closer to the due date. Although she loves her kennel and is comfortable with her heated houses and heated water dishes, I want to be there to assist with pups if it’s needed, so I may be sleeping in the shop also as we grow near puppy time.

I will keep you updated as we grow nearer I am sure, keep warm this winter it has been cold, also don’t forget to help keep our feathered friends warm with good suet or fatty mixed seed bird feeders. I had eight fluffy Chickadees and a small woodpecker out our kitchen window feeders this morning, I had a pork side for dog food which was mostly pork fat, and hung it near the feeders, the birds just love it.

When The Smoke Clears Keep warm, the days are getting longer with more sunshine; spring is just around the corner, get outdoors and enjoy.

Valentine’s day is around the corner, so it might be time to bake up some love. Moms, check those book bags for forgot ten notes requesting you to send a couple dozen cookies or cupcake for the big valentine’s party at school. Even if you don’t have school age children it can be fun to bake cookie to take to work or drop off at a friend’s. They are sure to be loved by whoever gets to eat them. Sugar cookies are the perfect choice because you can decorate them, or just cut then into heart shapes and call it good. You

can dress them up with a skim coat of icing and then depending on your cake decorating skill you can further embellish them.

Sprinkles or colored sugar on wet icing will always look pretty and it is so easy. If you have a little more time, then dipping half of a heart shaped sugar cookie in melted chocolate and then placing them on a cooling rack to let the chocolate harden is another unique valentine cookie finishing technique.

Sugar Cookies 1/2 cup butter – room temperature 2/3 cup sugar 1 egg yolk 1 1/2 cups flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

3 tablespoons milk or cream 1 teaspoon vanilla Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Cream the butter and sugar. Beat in the egg yolk.

Beat in the flour, with the baking powder one half cup at the time with 1 tablespoon of the milk at a time, until all the flour and milk and vanilla has been added. If the dough is very soft, then put it in the refrigerator to chill before rolling. To roll, be sure to flour both side of the cookie dough to prevent it from sticking to the counter and the rolling pin. Roll to a thickness of 1/4 “. Cut with you cookie cutters, and place on an ungreased baking dish. Bake at 375 degree for 8 – 10 minutes, depending on your oven. The bottom of the cookie should just be turn-

ing golden brown, makes 30 – 36 cookies depending on the size of your cookie cutter.

Royal Icing 1 egg white 1 1/2 cup icing sugar 1/2 teaspoon vanilla Optional – water to thin and food coloring Beat all the ingredients together. Depending on the size of your egg white you may have to add a little more icing sugar or a 1/2 teaspoon of water. You can tint the icing pink, with red food coloring. This icing can be used to both ice the cookies and to pipe icing decorations or words onto the cookies. The icing will harden in 15 – 60 minutes.

Do not store iced cookies in the refrigerator and they will siften and become sticky.

Considering you are already reading my first line of prose here I’ve tapped in to that involuntary and apparently seldom fought human desire to rubberneck at car accidents. That’s probably why this week several mornings it’s taken more than an hour to get to work…and left me conflicted against my inner voice dreading the inevitable onset of artificial intelligence…and that in these situations you really wish some autonomous robot actually would take over the wheel of humanity and drive all the cars just so the line would keep moving as normal and all the occupants

This week coaching my kids soccer game had a little peek of the feeling of being the Brazilian soccer team coach at the last World Cup vs. Germany in the semi-final. I know…the World Cup is coming up this summer and on the mind… and might be just a bit of an exaggeration because I didn’t have an audience of the entire world watching a team’s immolation live and in HD on their home turf.

But certainly wondering what in the world goes through semi-driver’s mind when he’s on black ice and going sideways across the QE2…because they have to be comparable. Couldn’t help looking to

hide under the bench like Brazilian head coach Scolari as no matter what I tried it didn’t work…in moments bombing spectacularly so. But like that driver behind the wheel once that momentum is headed for the ditch and your wheels have lost any possible traction, you’re going in. You grin, you bear it, and ride it out to the end… that’s what you do.

It goes for most things that involve you putting yourself out there in front of a crowd or audience, being in charge of something, or being the one to make decisions…there will be those occasions where things will go sideways even when we’ve put all our efforts in to preventing just that occurrence. Character building to be sure, because we can certainly all learn something about ourselves about not being able

to control every situation. I might have mentioned once before that attempt to knock a bird nest’s off the house with rocks and promptly put one through the picture window. You might have a good arm and all the confidence in the world, just not a good idea and you can contemplate it all hiding under the car for four hours after.

The funny thing is that you could come up with so many memories later of similar situations and know at the time they happened they were brutal to endure but laugh about them now to the point of your sides hurting, simply because the situations were so totally absurd.

If there is anything that people can’t help doing but love anyway, it is getting some bonus exercise for their inner schadenfreude.

Garth Rowswell Declares Intention To Run For The Local UCP Nomination

Garth Rowswell plans to run for the nomination of the United Conservative Party in the new Vermilion Lloydminster Constituency. The process over the next number of months will be to meet people, sell memberships, and try to get support for him to be the new candidate for this constituency.

Rowswell came to the Vermilion area in 1990 when he bought an existing farm supply business called Valley Fertilizer.

He took on a partner and expanded to Marwayne and Paradise Valley locations. In 1996, United Grain Growers (UGG) bought the company and Rowswell stayed on as the north eastern Alberta manager for four years.

During this time he was also on the board and eventually became president of a national industrial association called the Canadian Association of Agri Retailers (CAAR). It represented retailers of fertil-

izer, chemicals, and seed on a national and sometimes international basis.

After leaving UGG in 2000, Rowswell worked for a company called Farms. com as the western Canadian manager.

This company helped grain farmers build annual operating business plans. In 2002 Rowswell took a position as a financial advisor with Edward Jones Investments where he is currently transitioning into retirement.

“As my children grew up, I was involved in the community groups that they were a part of. For example, throughout the years, I was the president of the Vermilion Vipers Swim Club for eight years, president of the Curling Club, as well as a part of the Chamber of Commerce,” said Rowswell.

Rowswell has always been interested in public policy and has served on federal and provincial conservative constituency association boards.

“Policy is important as it can have a significant impact on our lives. It is impor-

tant to get it right which means different things to different people,” said Rowswell.

He is concerned that our present governments at the provincial and federal levels are increasing regulations and growing government to unsustainable levels, as well as having an anti-business slant to their policies. He would like to represent a model that would have more limited involvement by government.

According to Rowswell, this would require a cost-benefit analysis to be done on everything that government does. It would then need to be made public, and determined whether or not government needs to be involved in certain areas, and if so in the most efficient way.

He looks forward to engaging the community and meeting people throughout the constituency in the coming months to listen to their ideas and share his thoughts.

He encourages people to express their concerns and is open to debate because

he believes that a person always comes up with better ideas when they have been challenged.

New Income Tax Changes For Your 2017 Returns

(NC) With the income tax deadline approaching, there are some significant changes that have rolled out this year that will affect many Canadians. Here are some that can help make filing quicker and easier.

Public transit reimbursement. Early last year, the government announced the elimination of the public transit reimbursement, citing the credit wasn’t effective enough in encouraging the use of public transportation and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Instead of the individual tax credit, the federal government has announced that it will invest $20 billion over the next 11 years to improve transit across the country.

“Though the credit ended mid-year, you can still claim a 15 per cent non-refundable tax

credit for transit passes purchased between January 1 and June 30 on your 2017 income tax and benefit return,” says Lisa Gittens, senior tax professional at H&R Block.

Children’s activities. The Children’s Arts and Fitness tax credits, including the special supplement for disabled children, will no longer be available. In previous years, parents and guardians were able to receive credits for such activities as art classes, piano lessons, hockey and soccer.

Small business. Good news for small business owners – the government is moving forward with a plan to lower small business taxes from the current 10.5 per cent to 9 per cent.

Military credit. In recognition of the

commitment and sacrifice members of the Canadian Armed Forces make, it was announced that military salaries of all deployed personnel would be exempt from federal income taxes.

Education. Back in 2016, the federal government eliminated the federal education and textbook tax credits, to come into effect January 1, 2017. This means 2016 was the last year students were able to make these claims.

“The silver lining here is that the carryforward rules apply, so any unused education tax credits that arose prior to 2017 are still available to be claimed either this year or subsequent years moving forward,” explains Gittens. Depending on where you live, you

may also still be able to claim a provincial credit.

Bull Market Watershed Open House

Approximately 45 people attended the Vermilion River Watershed Alliance at the Vermilion Regional Centre on February 8.

Landowner, Tim Axe, shared a presentation on a project that had taken place on his property last year. Approximately 4,000 trees were planted in a riparian area, and fencing was placed around them for protection. Previously, the area was home to a large amount of deadfall and degradation from cattle. A large hill on the property also allowed for a gravity-fed pumping system to incorporate a couple of watering options.

Water can be pumped from the well to a reservoir tank atop the hill and drained to other areas of the farm, or pumped from a pond and slough to those areas depending

on where the cattle are located.

“We believe in the value of the diversity that occurs in those areas with both plant species, and beneficial insects and wildlife.

It has become again a place where organisms can live and thrive,” said Tim’s wife, Maighread Axe, who had grown up on the property and remembered the wooded area before the degradation occurred.

Though they had always wanted to make improvements in the area, Maighread noted that they never would have had the time and resources available. The couple used the project as a learning opportunity for their children, and were thrilled with the “outstanding” work that had been done, noting that there is already a difference in less than a year.

MLA Dr. Richard Starke said, “Watershed groups do some really valuable work

in terms of making people aware of how critical wetlands and riparian areas are to the health of our overall ecosystems. By restoring them, they improve the health of our environment by supporting a healthy population of both plants and animals.”

According to Mara Erikson, Extension and Stewardship Coordinator, the deadline for applications is March 15, but projects will continue all summer.

Bull Market Canada’s New And Growing Market: Nigeria

The 2017 New Crop Mission’s Team Canadian Wheat visited Canada’s top customers and provided them with technical data and support. Who are Canada’s top customers? Some of the answers, like Japan will be no surprise to anyone, but many would not expect to see one of our newest top customers, Nigeria on the list.

Fifteen to twenty years ago, I would have never had guessed that I would be in Nigeria, on a Canadian New Crop Mission. Nigeria has become one of the top customers for Canadian wheat and this is the second year we have visited the country as part of the new crop missions.

Why visit Nigeria? The Canadian industry is moving beyond the traditional markets that were a focus fifteen to twenty years ago. Nigeria has a young population of over 200 million people with an annual population growth rate of three per cent, meaning that there will be more demand for wheat imports in the future.

Our commitment to providing technical support and data through new crop missions is essential to maintaining our export relationship.

As an emerging country, Nigeria is concerned with food safety and getting the quality wheat, consistently. Because the Canadian team included the entire value chain we were able to work with customers to help ensure they could access the Canadian quality they have

come to expect while meeting their country’s grain safety regulations.

Nigeria is also very price sensitive.

Purchasing CWRS – in place of U.S. exports – allows them to minimize costs while still delivering higher quality flour through a blend of Canadian and Black Sea wheat. How important is the Nigerian market becoming? In 2007 Canada exported 24,600 tonnes of wheat, growing to a total of 728,419 tonnes in 2017.

Canada’s five-year-average is 623,125 tonnes.

Some farmers wonder if there is any value in having a producer as part of these customer support missions. Before I was part of the missions I was one of those people. But participating in the missions has made it clear to me that it is critical to have farmers as part of “Team Canada Wheat”. When customers have questions on Canadian production practices, I was in the room to answer. I was there to talk about the sustainability of Canadian farming and to explain why we use crop protection products. I was able to deliver the message about Canadian clean air, clean water and clean land, an increasingly important part of the Canadian brand.

Most of our major competitors carry out similar mission. But the Canadian approach to customer support is unique.

We take the entire value chain with us to talk to customers. When there were questions on supply or logistics an exporter

was there to provide the right information.

Cigi and CGC provided unbiased technical information on the grade factors and the technical milling, baking, and noodle making properties. This collaborative effort demonstrated Canadian commitment to supporting our customers and providing them with the opportunity to optimize the value and performance of Canadian wheat.

The Canadian missions are about a lot more than industry representatives talking to international buyers. We are also there to listen directly to our customers’ needs and concerns. Bringing these needs and concerns back to Canada is one of the key objectives and values of the missions. This feedback allows Canada to adjust our grading and classi-

fication systems to give buyers what they want and to focus research goals on the traits and qualities that will get the highest return from the market. Another reason for these types of customer relations is it is critical to build relationships and trust in a competitive wheat export environment.

As a farmer who has had to opportunity to sit on the Boards of Alberta Wheat Commission as well as Cereals Canada, I have seen first-hand the value of our industry working together to support my customers. I am proud to see that the reach for Canadian wheat is expanding.

When it comes to putting together a tenyear farm plan, there are several important areas that need to be considered.

Employees/family members. “Family will always be the focus of Canadian farms, but we see more non-family members being involved as farms increase in size and scope. Many farms have non-family members with a significant role and responsibility in the farm operation.”

Dehod says that, whether family or nonfamily members, workers must be clear on their roles and responsibilities.

• How are they being trained, and rewarded?

• How do they fit into the culture of the farm?

• Are they passionate and committed to the farm’s success?

• Do they know what success looks like?

• Are they part of the team?

“Businesses evolve and are always seeking improvement. Does your business culture allow family and non-family employees to provide input for new improvements?

If your team sees that you listen and implement their ideas, the trust and commitment can be a great motivator. Sometimes, farms will not take the next step as they don’t have family that is interested or the desire to manage employees. The farm cannot grow as it does not have the manpower to do so.”

Communication. “Once you have determined what your 10-year plan looks like, let your entire team know,” says Dehod. “This

is a living document. Live it. Communicate often, it will keep family and employees engaged and focused on the vision. Make sure your team knows that you appreciate their contribution to the plan. They’ll go above and beyond with good communication. This passion will prepare your farm to take the next step.”

Standard Operating Procedures. “We all have our way of doing things. But as we assemble our teams, family or non-family, procedures have to be standardized and communicated. You can’t expect things to be done to your satisfaction if noone knows what’s expected of them. Standardized procedures also increase efficiency and safety. But procedures have to be documented and checklist created. You require complete buy-in from all family and nonfamily members. This is a critical step and it has to be done right, as not doing so could have expensive consequences.”

Technology. Technology is changing rapidly, says Dehod, and there is more data now than in the past to help evaluate processes and decisions. “How do you intend to embrace this change and use technology to your advantage to meet your vision and goals? Your grandfather would have never envisioned GPS guidance or zero till. We have mapped the genomes of beef and our major crops. Modern agriculture has embraced technology. Exciting things will happen in the next 10 years, but how will you keep up? Life-long learning is key to keeping up.”

Agricultural Efficiency Programs Expanded

Farms and agri-processors will have access to new and expanded energy-efficiency programs to help them reduce their emissions and energy bills.

In December 2017, $1.4 billion in provincial Climate Leadership Plan funding was announced to continue the transition to a diversified, low-carbon economy. More than $81 million over the next four years is now being made available for the agriculture sector through the Climate Leadership Plan and the federal government.

“Alberta’s agriculture sector has long been at the forefront of adopting innovative new practices and enhancing environmental stewardship. That’s why we have developed these efficiency programs to meet the demand – improving the sustainability of agricultural operations, addressing climate change and reducing costs to help the sector remain competitive in the global marketplace.”

Grant programs include: Farm Energy and Agri-Processing: For primary producers and smaller agri-processors to improve overall energy efficiency.

On-Farm Solar PV: For farm electricity customers to install solar panels.

Irrigation Efficiency: To convert highpressure irrigation systems into low-pressure systems.

Energy Savings for Agri-Processors: For larger agri-processors to improve energy efficiency.

Applications for the energy-efficiency programs are being finalized and will be available at agriculture.alberta.ca.

Depreciation is the tricky one, says Dehod. “Income tax returns may have capital cost allowance (CCA) numbers, but those can be quite different from the actual depreciation numbers that should be charged as a business expense. For the historical accrued net farm income numbers

to be meaningful, depreciation amounts must reflect true depreciation of the assets used to generate an income. This may be close to 16 per cent for your equipment line and two to four per cent for your grain and machinery storage. If you are in an intensified livestock operation, depreciation on building and equipment could be higher.

“The primary goal of any business is to generate a positive net income and make a profit. Profit is not a dirty word. Once you make a profit, the issue is how to invest it and protect it from being taxed.”

Bull Market ‘Growing Industrial Hemp’ Seminar

Soaking up new market information, producers and industry specialists met at the Vermilion Regional Centre on February 6, for the ‘Growing Industrial Hemp’ seminar.

Vermilion-Lloydminster MLA Richard Starke, County of Vermilion River Reeve Dale Swyripa, and Town of Vermilion Mayor Caroline McAuley were all in attendance along with nearly 180 other people.

“Hemp is a multi-use plant, and you use the whole plant,” said InnoTech Alberta’s

Byron James.

According to Patti Breland who is an Industry Development Officer in Biomaterials for Alberta Agriculture & Forestry, northern Alberta has an advantage for growing hemp because longer sunshine and cooler nights in the region create a higher concentration of Omega’s 3-6-9 in the soil generating up to 30 per cent more biomass.

“The food, the fibre, and the bioactives are all marketable,” said Breland.

Lori-Jo Graham, Alberta Agriculture & Forestry Program Lead says, a number of

factors have worked together to allow the encouragement of hemp production and connection to new markets.

“With Government support, an inflow of investment to research and promotion, and a new regulatory environment through the Canadian Hemp Trade Alliance; manufacturers are now seeking growers and have a focussed approach in the market to generate additional revenue streams for producers,” said Graham.

As a part of the Grade 2 cultural research unit, the Grade 2 students had the opportunity to listen to six guest presenters over the month of January. They were able to learn about various cultures through the exploration of traditional artifacts, clothing, pictures and videos. Some presenters even brought traditional Norwegian and English foods for the students to sample. Thank you to everyone that took time to provide such valuable experiences for our students.

The Grade 2 students are starting the letter writing component of their language arts curriculum again. Each week for a month, a Grade 2 student writes a letter to a staff member, who then responds to them. Exchanging letters with the same person for a month is very beneficial, as the staff member and the student can make a stronger connection.

Congratulations to the Jr. Girls (grade 6,7.8) Basketball team as they competed in their first tournament this season and their first games. They competed in Lloydminster, at Holy Rosary, on February 3.

They started off the tournament playing the team from Ecole St. Thomas, coached

by Ms. Partington. It was a nail-biter of a game and the Spartans won the battle by one point and the satisfaction of defeating Ms. Partington. In the afternoon they

defeated Holy Family School, meeting St. Mary’s in the final game. They continued their winning streak bringing home the gold. Congratulations!

Kerri Lorenson is beginning a new program with our Grade 2 students. It is called “The Seven Habits of Happy Kids.” Kerri will visit the class once a week and use engaging characters to teach the students about expressing their feelings, being respectful, conflict resolution and so much more!

Grade 3’s started their Hearing and

Sound Unit in which the students will be able to describe the nature of sound and demonstrate methods for producing and controlling sound. They will become familiar with vibration, volume, and pitch, sound amplifying and soundproofing, how sound travels, how the ear works, hearing range and hearing damage.

Students in Grade 4 are exploring the natural resources in Alberta and the role that the Alberta Oil Sands play in our province.

Grade 5 reporters, Rylan and Alivia, reported in science they got to learn about chemicals and physical changes.

They did a test with litmus paper where they put the paper in different liquids and saw if it changed color. If both litmus papers stayed the same colour then it was neutral, if the blue turned blue and the red turned blue than it was a base, if the red turned red and the blue turned red than it was an acid.

This month Grade 6 will be focusing on Habit 6, “Seek first to understand, then to be understood.” This virtue is extremely valuable as the focus is communication and provides the reminder to listen first then speak.

Vermilion Elementary School News The two Kindergarten classes took a field trip to Boston Pizza on February 5 and 6. The students were able to take a tour of the kitchen, including the fridge and freezer (which were “very cold” according to the students). They also learned about the roles of a cook, waitress, server, and others who work at a restaurant. Each child made their own real pizza, and then created chef hats as well as “loaded” pizzas with stickers. Thank you to Miss Kelli and the Boston Pizza personnel, who once again, made this a very special day.

February 6 was Bus Driver Appreciation Day at VES. I hope you found some way to recognize and thank the amazing driver that so diligently transports your children to and from school.

The VES Spirit Team appointed February 6 as Beach Dress-up Day. Even though the temperatures outside were not beach-like, the temperatures inside the school heated up as many students and staff in shorts and flip flops danced

during the assembly and did beach activities through the day.

February 6 was the date of our second 2018 assembly. Mr. Barry Roth presented cheques to Legion Remembrance Day Poster Winners – Brooke Miller, Jordyn Pottle, Blake Jensen, and Salma Shah.

Vermilion Legion Nearing 100th Anniversary

The Royal Canadian Legion Field Marshall Alexander Branch # 11 will be celebrating their 100th Anniversary on May 12, in Vermilion.

A new 16’ banner with the Legion’s crest and poppies will be displayed outside the legion for a month before the celebration. On May 12, there will be a number of military displays at the legion, as well as hamburgers and pop for sale. There will be a banquet at the Vermilion Regional Centre, with a military dance band providing entertainment into the evening.

Funds raised throughout the day will be going towards refurbishing the soldiers’ plot at the Vermilion Public Cemetery.

Originally, the Great War Veterans Association began in 1916, and the organization applied for a charter through the British Empire Service League in 1918 and

the group in Vermilion was officially recognized. The name was transferred when the Tuesday, Feb. 13th and Sat., Feb. 17th @ 8 PM Legion came into existence in 1926.

The Vermilion Legion currently has walls decorated with some of the 158 Canadian soldiers who died during the Afghanistan mission, some of the 44,000 Canadian soldiers who lost their lives in WWII, and a few memorial pictures from the Battle of Vimy Ridge, WWI. According to Roth, there are approximately 200 fallen veterans in the Vermilion area, and so far 32 of them have memorial plaques from the Canadian Fallen Heroes Association hanging in the Vermilion Legion.

Vermilion Folk Club will present The Ray Blackmore Trio on February 24 at 8 p.m. at the Legion. The trio consists of Ray Blackmore, Kevin Lambert and Alexis Sebring who are members of Blackwater Crude.

The genre for the evening will consist of classic country with an acoustic rock, and blues feel, performing both original and covers songs. Music influences will draw from Jonny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Stompin Tom. Raised on a farm in Winfield, Alberta, Blackmore started singing early on with his brothers and sisters. In the summertime, they would have a campfire where

the siblings would try to outdo each other by learning a new song to perform.

He is passionate about honest music that makes you feel and touches you on a personal level. As a songwriter, Blackmore likes to tell stories about experiences or mistakes he has made in his life and tries to portray them in a humorous light.

“My deepest passion in performing is seeing the laughter and emotions an audience feels when I perform and spin a story with music,” said Blackmore.

Blackmore and Lambert have been playing together for 15 years with Sebring joining three years ago. Blackmore has made Vermilion his home since 2011 and he is tickled to play for his friends and neighbours.
