The Royal Canadian Legion Field Marshall Alexander Branch #11 held an Installation Ceremony on January 22, at the Vermilion Legion. Executive members are elected each year within the Legion, and members were formally installed to their positions. A minute of silence was held at the beginning of the ceremony, and reports were given from each department. According to Garry Zayac’s President’s Report, a couple of new rentals will have the armouries booked all days,

and George Freestone’s Cadet Report noted that 24 children are involved in the program. “They’re doing really well,” said Freestone. According to Service Officer, Gordon Hills, he received a call from a Veteran in distress. He went on to say that the Veteran from Fort McMurray had experienced a mishap where a stop was put on his account and cell phone and that he had run out of gas between Vermilion and Islay. Occurring on the weekend and a foggy day where the traveller was at risk being left on the road, Hills brought the

Veteran with his Jerry can into Vermilion to fill up with fuel. He fed and housed him for the night, and the fuel was enough to get him as far as North Battleford. The North Battleford Legion was closed on Sunday, so Hills made some calls to get the traveller in touch with the right people. Hills believes, the Veteran may have made it as far as Saskatoon. “That’s outstanding; isn’t that what we’re all about?” said John Mahon, 1st Vice President of the Alberta-NWT Command, in reference to service. Comrade Mahon led the installation portion of the meeting, and positions

were appointed and accepted as follows: Sergeant At Arms – Jim Bristowe; Treasurer – Bruce Marriott; Service Officer – Gordon Hills; Branch Chaplain – Aubrey Bell; Directors- Ed Mistal, Marlene Campbell, Barr y Roth, and George Matechuk (missing); 2nd Vice President – Katie Cooper; 1st Vice President – George Freestone; and President – Garry Zayac. The Vermilion Legion’s next general meeting will is on February 20. To find out more about Legion activities, you can search ‘Royal Canadian LegionVermilion Alberta’ on Facebook.
