Waxing Their Way To The Olympics

B o r n a n d r a i s e d i n Ve r m i l i o n , Patrick and Paul Moore, will be heading to the Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea to wax cross-countr y skis from February 9 - 25.

Members of the Vermilion Nordic Ski Club for a majority of their lives, t h e b r ot h e r s n ow l i ve i n Ed m o n ton and continue to remain heavily involved with the sport.

Both Patrick and Paul continue to actively race themselves in provincial and national events with the Fast Trax Run & Ski Club in Edmonton, as well as work at the Fast Trax Run & Ski Shop.

Patrick has been working with the American team for years and was

asked to wax at Canmore at a World Cu p eve nt . T h e r e, b ot h b r ot h e r s stepped in to give a hand, and Paul began working with the Australian team.

“You want to have team cohesion throughout the season,” said Paul who felt that both brothers have that with their respective teams.

Patrick noted that the process of preparing skis for an Olympic event begins long before the race starts.

“Most athletes will travel with 30 35 pairs of skis, of which 5 – 6 pairs are tested each day,” said Patrick.

The brothers will test which products are giving the appropriate grip and speed in different conditions to match the athletes ski requirements, giving them the oppor tunit y to ski

up to 50 kilometres per day. Once narrowed down, they will work directly with each athlete to tailor the skis to their strengths and weaknesses.

Cleaning an d re -wa xing p os sib ly hundreds of skis per day, each with 10 - 12 layers of different types of wax; in an effort to make sure that they will be the fastest, Patrick and Paul will be kept very busy. “ Waxing can be as simple or as complicated as you want. I think cross country skiing is unique among any other sport because you can participate from the time you are 3 - 103 years old, making it a lifetime activity.

The coaches we had as children in Vermilion instilled a love of the outdoors and a love of skiing. In our small, tight-knit group, we learned to

develop a rapport with our teammates and how to work together which is a big part of why we are still involved.

Our t wo most influential c oac hes were our first coach Les Parsons, and Vaughn Cooper who is head coach to this day. Teamwork is a critical factor in making outcomes,” said Paul.

He went on to say that growing up in Vermilion; they learned to love skiing for the sake of skiing and to make it a part of their lifestyle. Later learning the reality that neither of them would be fast enough to be Olympians themselves, they still love being involved.

“Now it’s a bonus for us to be going as we would still do it for the love of doing it, even without the international travel,” said Paul.

Ninety-four-year-old Veteran, Gage Pendleton, joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in December of 1942 as a Wireless/Air gunner.

Born and raised on a farm 10 miles south of Swift Current, Saskatchewan, the 19 -year-old had taken wireless training in Calgary and gunnery training in Lethbridge before going overseas in 1943 attached to the RAF. “ In 19 4 4 the allies had b o m be d pret t y n ear ever y t hin g in Euro p e, so they decided they were going to plan an air invasion to get behind the German lines,” said Pendleton.

From his bom ber c ommand stationed in North Yorkshire, England, he along with a pilot, co-pilot, and a navigator were transferred to a Dakota DC-3 which was a transport command.

He attended a British paratroop school training for six weeks, and as a Paratroop Jumpmaster, joined his crew on the Dakota’s where they were already committed to tow gliders.

“The invasion was into Arnhem, the Netherlands and we flew for three days to try and take the Arnhem Bridge and the allies didn’t get a foothold,” said Pendleton.

According to Pendleton, there were then quite a few Canadians and Americans without a job so some Canadians were billeted in homes in Blackpool, England and they were loaded on small PNO luxury liner boats and then converted over to troop ships.

Having sustained heavy fire, new clothing was issued because of all the holes in the existing ones.

They travelled by boat (under convoy until out in the middle of the Atlantic) to Bombay. The 33 day trip took them into Gibraltar, the Indian Ocean, and Bombay, where they were loaded on a

The train allowed them to stop for food and water a few times and Pendleton was transported by train up into the northern province of Assam. There they took a river raft for a long day’s paddle by Kenyan soldiers who were at tached to the Indian Army. They were then transferred by truck into jungle aircraft to a northern province occupied by the Japanese.

Here Pendleton joined the four C-5 squadrons from Edmonton which was the first Canadian squadron he had been on since leaving Canada. “ By that time, the Japanese had practically all of Thailand and Northern India. If they had gotten Calcutta, they would have gotten all of India,” said Pendleton.

Here Pendleton served with the 14th Army delivering supplies dropped by parachute to mountaintop locations. “ T he su p p lies in c lu d e d m e d i c al supplies, food, and ammunition; even three mules. Other times, the RAF had a Spitfire squadron ahead of the 14 th Army that did a lot of bombing, so at times the aircraft was carrying a 500 pound bomb. Jungle airstrips weren’t quite adequate to carry such an aircraft, and the plane often cleared more jungle on either side,” said Pendleton.

According to Pendleton, the Asian conflict was not noted much until 1944, but in all of the services, over 55,000 Canadians took part in the southeast Asian theatre.

Pendleton went on to say that much like ‘In Flander’s Fields’ representing the European conflict, that an epitaph was given to represent the Asian areas.

Pendleton had a daughter in 1947 and a son in 1949, so afterward headed out west where he purchased a garage and implement shop in Irma. In business until 1967, Pendleton sold and purchased farmland northeast of Irma where he stayed until losing his wife (who was 42 years old at the time).

Ron Moses Community Christmas Dinner

Over 100 people gathered at the Vermilion Senior’s Centre on December 25, for the 22nd Annual Ron Moses Community Christmas Dinner. Attendees came from as far as Edmonton and Saskatoon and 140 people were seated at the event. Special deliveries were made to 67 people spread out from Vermilion to Innisfree, Mannville, Minburn, and Islay. Combined with the in-house meals, a total number of 207 people were given a full Christmas dinner. Guests enjoyed a selection of carols and visiting one another while at the Senior’s Centre, and were also grateful for the delicious meal.

The Vermilion 4-H Sheep Club has had a very eventful first couple of months. On Friday, November 17, the club had their first meeting at the Ag Society Boardroom. The General Leader is Penny Westergaard.

The 2017 North East Regional 4-H Volleyball Tournament took place on December 3 and was a huge success! The tournaments were full with 20 teams playing from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at J.R. Robson.

There was a total of 189 4-H members and 39 parent chaperone volunteers in attendance. At noon hour the senior members of the Vermilion Sheep Club hosted activities for the cleaver members in attendance.

The 4-H clubs who had teams in attendance were: Ardmore Beef, Beaver County 4-H Multi, Chauvin Beef, Clandonald Multi, Edgerton Multi, Elk Point Beef, InnisfreeMinburn Beef, Irma Beef, Lucky 13 4-H Light Horse, Mannville Multi, Myrnam Beef, Vermilion Outdoors, Vegreville Beef, Vegreville Multi, Vermilion Beef, Vermilion Light Horse, Vermilion Sheep, and Viking Beef. Congratulations to the winners, Bronze Medal- Innisfree- Minburn Beef, Silver Medal- Clandonald Multi, and Gold Medal- Vermilion Beef #2. A special thank you goes out to the members and parents of the Vermilion 4-H Sheep Club and other

volunteers who helped to make this event such a success. Another thank you to J.R. Robson school for allowing 4-H to host our tournament there.

The awards ceremony for the 2016-17 4-H year was held on December 8, 2017, at the School of Hope. The Night was a sensation! A potluck supper and various desserts were beyond delicious. The awards ceremony took place after the meal. A diverse amount of accomplishments were recognized for Cleavers, members, and leaders.

On December 16, 2017, the Vermilion 4-H Sheep Club held their Christmas Party at Striker Lanes Bowling Alley. The afternoon was a lot of fun filled with bowling, followed by a gift exchange and a potluck snack.

The rest of the 4-H year is sure to be just as exciting. Our next club meeting is on Friday, January 12 at 7 p.m. in the Ag Office. With public speaking around the corner, we will be having a communication workshop at the beginning followed by our meeting.

Santa Is Grateful For All The Support

Over the Christmas season, you may have noticed a Santa making appearances around Vermilion.

Vermilion resident Guy Holowchuk was the man all dressed in red, and was on a mission to bring back the belief in Santa to children and adults alike, as well as raise funds for the Vermilion LTC Comfort Fund.

Holowchuk visited stores and the Christmas tree in the downtown core of Vermilion and at the Lakeland Mall.

He also made special visits with children whose parents contacted him in advance and asked him to meet with

their children.

“I started the Santa excursions initially to try and raise funds for the Long Term Care Comfort fund, but when I saw how excited the children were to see Santa and have him know their names I became amazed at the magic of Christmas and how special it was to the kids,” said Holowchuk. “My first thought was to do selfies with Santa on a donation basis but realized that not everyone could afford to donate and that was fine too.”

Holowchuk with the help of friends spreading the word, Facebook, and newspaper coverage was able to raise a total of $1515 for the Comfort Fund and

would like to express his gratitude to the residents of Vermilion.

“Your generosity has generated a considerable donation to the Longterm Care Comfort fund. Thank you, thank you. You should all take a bow; your generosity will not go unnoticed.

This Santa is overwhelmed with all your support,” said Holowchuk.

Holowchuk has plans on making the Santa excursions an annual event and has much bigger plans for next year already in mind.

Call it cabin fever, or a fresh dose of inspiration and e n e r g y, b u t a n e w year inspires me to star t thinking about new decorating ideas. I know I should be thinking about New Year resolutions for self-improvement, but that c an wait for later.... d i d so m e o ne say procrastination? I am busy planning a new look for my dining room.

I will make the existing pantry on the right side of the wall a little smaller, to make room for a second pantry, on the left of the wall, with some re-positioned buffet cabinetry in the center.

I am trying to repurpose what I have, yet add a much-needed update. It is

New Year Resolutions

a renovation of necessity. The flooring is worn out, and I seem to have acquired a lot of kitchen appliances that I don’t have room for (all as gifts), and I am tired of them sitting on the counter, or trying to fit them into an already full pantry. I am also disturbed by my chandelier not being centered to the dining table, or to the buffet or to the French doors. The misplaced chandelier is the result of the electrician hanging the fixture, 30 years ago, on a day when; I was too pregnant to walk the gangplank into the house, leaving him free to make decisions.

Soon it will be the day of reckoning, for this errant light fixture, and I dream in delight of having it centered. One problem I have been having is finding pantry doors that have both character, and go floor to ceiling. The search

is on. I may just purchase plain slab ones and detail them with some period looking moulding; a miter saw, some wood glue, dap and paint. The other pantry door option is the sliding barn door, possibly made of old shiplap fir from an on derelict farm chop bin. As with most design projects, there are lots of amazing solutions; the trick is to edit it down to the final decision and then stick with it.

True to 1980’s style I have wood w i n d o w s , o a k ve n e e r d o o r s , o a k c asing and wo o d c abinets. As an update, I have decided to paint the windows, doors and casing a sof t and light oatmeal color, but first I will be removing the top of the window casing to add a vintage farmhouse l o o k . To d o this I will rem ove the 2.5-inch casing from the top and then

add a fillet board, a wide top board, that will extend slightly beyond the side casing and then it will be topped off with a small cap. Painting one door and window leading to the next, and so on. I know it will be a big, seemingly endless job. One of my clients set out to paint all the doors in their old farmhouse, only to realize that the thickness of the paint made the doors no longer fit, necessitating the edge of the doors to all be planed down, so this is a very real and unfortunate possibility for projects like this. My first steps will be packing up all the contents of the buffet cabinets and pantry, and living out of boxes for a while. It`s hard to live in a renovation mess, thus the procrastination in this long overdue project, whose time has come.

Well, this week has been more of all the plates still spinning merrily away on the end of the broom handles, without being tended steadily, than a J.R. Robson high school physics lesson. If I remember correctly, it ’s something to do with the conservation of all that spinning once it has been wound up for awhile…like say the last 11 months of the year. After a couple years of taking the proverbial 12 Days of Christmas off this year it was my turn to hold the fort at work, and although thankfully quiet so far, but can’t help but feel like it has been a bit of just

keeping the legs and skates moving fr o m p ur e h a b i t a n d a l l t h at p r i o r momentum rather than doing the full 2 blade glide down the rink between Christmas and New Year’s it usually is. On the plus side, there is a heck of a lot less lineup for a morning beverage before settling in for the day and the traffic a whole lot thinner out there, so it isn’t all bad I suppose. Unfortunately with the weather taking a huge nose dive just in the nick of time for the holidays (I did actually mention I’d like it a bit “cooler” last week.. but not frigid…so don’t pin this one all on me), it hasn’t been worth trying to spend a lot of time outside doing any fun activities with the kids while they are off school either. Who is kidding who?… you could literally escort the kids or

dogs at gunpoint to the door just to try to get them to go to outside. So cabin fever it is then. Funny thing probably is that if you are working through the holidays you haven’t filled up your nightly schedule with quite much as you thought you would, all the kidrelated events that kept you busy on the schedule are on short-term hiatus, so you are home thinking I should be doing something, your body feels like it would be doing something… but you end up instead in a state of static distraction, slowly melting into the cushions on the couch watching movies until you pass out. I possibly may have watched every Jimmy Stewart western from Dad’s DVD collection but “It’s A Wonderful Life,” some a couple times because consciousness

ended before the movie did.

Oh, I suppose that flick isn’t a western, but it is the holidays after all. If you had watched it, I would get trolled for not mentioning it. I’ve always been partial to the Alastair Sim “Scrooge” movie but got six thumbs down from the kids after two straight minutes of “black and white,” “old,” and ‘boring” comments. Sigh…perhaps they will figure it out eventually.

In my conclusion for the year, let us just say that lately if your momentum has been stationary and your angle has been horizontal, you weren’t the only one thinking from a couch about those kind of physics.

Hope your holidays were a great recharge for you and have a Happy (and energetic) New Year in 2018!

Hoping that everyone had a safe and enjoyable holiday season, I’m not sure whether mine was safe or all that enjoyable, although I was with family, had turkey and got the best Christmas gift ever.

We drove to Saskatoon on the eve of Christmas Eve for my precious Christmas gift Miss Teek, I was so excited and delighted to meet and receive her, so much so I hardly noticed driving the wife around the city shopping.

We got to bond close up being in the vehicle all day, and by the time I got home, it was a 14-hour drive, something I do not do and most likely will never do again in one day, as on Christmas Eve day I thought I might have got a touch of snow blindness. It wasn’t all that sunny, but the snow was still bright all day, and I have a headache, sore eyes and dizziness symptoms. However, I still bonded that much more with my little Miss Teek, who was not yet even eight weeks old, so I also lost a little sleep caring for her.

Christmas morning my illness hit me a little harder, we all opened our gifts at my daughter Shawna’ house, with the whole family including our youngest daughter Nikki, but now both daughters and my

wife Roxanne were also feeling under the weather. What was a wonderful morning turned worse as the day went on, as my wife got very ill after we prepared the turkey supper before noon, in fact by supper time she could not even eat that delicious supper she prepared. In fact, she spent most of Christmas day in the washroom and felt she could not make the trip to our rural home, so she stayed at our youngest daughters Nikki’s, which being concerned for her was a good idea as she lives across the street from the hospital if she got worse.

By boxing day both Roxanne and I were in a bad way, but I drove to town to bring her home, and both of us got even worse to the point I had to drive the wife back to town to the emergency at the hospital. Where they immediately put her into an examining room and started an IV [intravenous] due to her dehydration, where we were informed we all are having a bout with the dreaded 2017 flu...which surprised me as I had the flu shot in November. So needless to say we got sick than appears sicker with all symptoms one can imagine, I spent New Year’s eve coughing into my pillow trying to catch some sleep into the new year, my eye focus is just now coming back enough to type this. I have improved to the point of like a worse cold ever, but I see light at the end of the tunnel, last night I did get some decent sleep, be careful my friends as this flu is a

monster, I’m glad I have the antibodies now that I have it.

Now for any of you that feel safe as you have had the flu shot also, medical world word is that although the flu shot was somewhat effective in November to the south as the flu virus moved north into Canada, it mutated into something special. What that means is don’t count on the flu shot being effective as first counted on, use every means of caution as possible as believe me you don’t want or need this flu, and once you have it there is not much they can do for you.

On top of that Christmas week was an extreme deep freeze, my new puppy being a puppy of course needed to go outdoors every couple hours, which didn’t help sleep issue or staying warm either. On top of caring for a puppy and my very sick wife, I still have to care for the rest of my furbabies, and we also ran out of firewood, thank goodness the rest of the team also Alaskan Malamutes handled the cold snap like a tiptoe through the tulips. I added a foot of new straw to their beds and increased their calories with fatty foods, they seemed actually to enjoy it, so I had four of them helping me cut some firewood, which was only a short distance from home. I managed to cut enough for a couple of days, and that took me all day to achieve as I was in such bad shape...it was minus 34C and that was

without the wind chill, so I assume it was in that minus 40C range with the wind chill.

I did manage a couple of days later to cut enough to last us into the New Year as that wood stove was roaring 24/7, it was so cold that the only concern I had for the dogs was drinking water, which they have plenty of during the day in my shop. However in their kennels at night the lack of snow offered little moisture, so I would take gallon milk jugs of hot water for their dishes at night, as I poured the hot water into their big stainless steel dishes half a gallon would vaporize into the air.

I hope most of you had a much better holiday season than mine, but we all endured are on the mend, and the cold snap seems to have broken for a break, none of which by the way took any bonding away from Miss Teek. In fact, she may have got me through it all with a warm heart, we are heading outdoors right this minute letting all the dogs out and celebrating the warm weather and the new year, and would like to wish you a happy new year.

December 23, 2017 at 83 years It is with great sadness that the family of Irene Gertrude Thomsen announces her passing on December 23, 2017 at 83 years in Merritt, BC. Irene is survived by her loving husband of 64 years Ralph, their 6 children: Gail (Mark), Janice (Cal), Arlene (David), Carol, Audrey, Linda (Len).

Ten grandchildren: Christopher (Laceigh), Dustin (Heather), Nicole (Robert), Alicia, Courtney (Dan), Jessie, Natasha (Mike), Melissa (Dan), Shawn, Melanie.

Eleven great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren.

Irene was predeceased by her parents William and Ethel, sisters Leona, Evelyn, Betty, granddaughter Christina and great grandson Christopher.

Besides her family, Irene leaves many, relatives, extended family, friends and people who’s lives she touched.

A celebration of life for Irene will be held in Merritt, BC at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Foundation.

The school was bustling with activity as students and staff participated in the “Five Days of Christmas”. On the First Day of Christmas at St. Jerome’s we saw many fuzzy p.j.’s, onesies, Star Wars p.j.’s, blankets, slippers and stuffies as student enjoyed Pajama Day. The High School Student Council also woke up very early that morning to cook a delicious breakfast for the staff. What a wonderful way to begin the day. Thank you so much council members. High School students enjoyed their tasty mugs of Hot Chocolate and cookie decorating on the Second Day of Christmas at St. Jerome’s.

Charity was the theme for the third day of Christmas as students donated generously to the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Ervon, for their Peru mission. On the Fourth Day of Christmas there were many Red/Green clothing/hats and Ugly Christmas Sweaters worn. The exchanging of Warm Fuzzies, sharing an Ethnic Lunch and participating in a variety of activities were enjoyed on the Fifth Day. Thank you to Mr. MacMillan and all the amazing members of Student Council for sharing their gifts of time and talent to make the week exciting and special.

Mrs. Roth’s grade four class ventured out to the Ukrainian Village on December 19. Sleigh rides on horse drawn carts were enjoyed. As well, our students learned to make kolach – Ukrainian Christmas bread is a slightly sweet yeast bread that is braided and shaped into a ring. A candle can be placed in the middle

to be displayed at Christmas Eve supper (Sviata Vechera). Traditionally, the bread is eaten on Christmas Day. On Wednesday, December 20, our Kindergarten, Grade 4 and Grade 5 classes visited the residents at the Vermilion Valley Lodge, to spread the Christmas spirit with song and dance as they shared this year’s Christmas Concert. A week after their dynamite performance at the Christmas Concert and they still have the moves! Way to go!

Our Faith In Action Team spread Christmas Spirit as they shared the true meaning of the Candy Cane with each Elementary class. Each student was treated with a Candy Cane. Thanks to Mackenzie, Dixie and Louise for creating all the tags and to Clay, Landon, Oscar, Mackenzie and Mia for handing out all the Candy Canes.

Sledge Hockey was experienced by many students at St. Jerome’s during the last weeks of December. The sport is designed to allow persons with lower body disabilities to play ice hockey. It was interesting to observe the difference in nature between males and females, when attempting this new activity. After strapping into the sled and obtaining balance, the fellows preferred to engage in “bumper car” like games, while the ladies raced each other, practiced quick stops and spins and attempted not to crash into others. What great fun!

On Wednesday, December 21 past and present Spartan athletes donned uniforms and took to the basketball court for the Annual Alumni game. Each group was out to prove something – either that they’ve got it, or that they still have it! A

St. Jerome’s Coach Leaves After 10 Years

It was a treat that on a Friday night so close to Christmas, December 22, at least one player from every one of Alan Rogan’s St. Jerome’s high school boys volleyball teams took part in one last game to thank coach for the decade he

sat on the bench for the school.

Rogan, or ‘Al’ as many of his former player’s call him these days is retiring from coaching - for good this time.

Approached by now vice-principal Allan MacMillan ten years ago to coach some Grade 10’s, Rogan agreed to come back to St. Jerome’s - but only for one year.

Fast forward to today, around a dinner table at Boston Pizza in front of more than 20 players he coached, friends on staff, and family, Al said the experience was nearly as good as coaching college, even though one year turned into many quick.

Al was overqualified for 1A volleyball level as he coached the Lakeland College Rustlers men’s team from 19892002 in the ACAC (Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference). He’s been the Athletic Director there since 2006 and was already recognized earlier this year on the national level as Athletic Director of the Year. Not bad for a man who didn’t go to college and started at Lakeland years ago as the Equipment Room Supervisor.

Despite the demands of this job, Rogan would still create time to hop on a bus Friday’s and Saturday’s for “massive” tournaments in Plamondon, Bassano, and Two Hills.

This time away on the weekends meant that Al missed some of his son, Jesse’s games in junior high. It’s fitting that he leaves coaching as Jesse played his final season in 2017.

Success came for many of the teams he coached, even culminating in a provincial championship in 2014, but that was never the end goal nor the reason he coached. Al always talked about growing and learning, especially off the court.

The great lesson he taught many young athletes: the intangibles that make good volleyball teams and players translate to life.

It’s no surprise that when people talk about Al they mention his own hard work, trust, and humble nature. That mentality bleeds through into his players.

His sang-froid on the sidelines is maybe his most well-known characteristic. A spectator knew he was pretty ticked if he sat back in his chair, crossed

Experience:

Excellent computer skills are necessary as well as the ability to solve problems and troubleshoot. The computer support technician should have strong communication skills and be able to converse with and support those employees who are not technologically proficient.

The position also requires knowledge of basic hardware and software functions and networking. Organizational skills are essential.

Familiarity with the IBM based PC computers is essential; familiarity with Macintosh computers is also an asset. The computer support technician should be motivated with a mind attuned to detail.

his arms, and frowned. In those intense timeout situations with his team reeling from a run against them, he would lighten up the mood by sauntering into the huddle stone-faced, saying calmly before revealing a huge grin: “It’s just a pass guys, side out.”

A graduate of St. Jerome’s in the early 80’s, Rogan had a message for those athletes in his retirement speech: to give back to the community when they can and to coach if the opportunity arises.

Al doesn’t like to talk about himself ver y much. He gets more pleasure seeing three of his players in recent years Matthew Pulyk at King’s University, Ethan Campbell at Concordia, and Julien Quickstad at Lakeland, play at the same college level that he coached.

And on a brisk winter night a couple weeks ago many former players got the pleasure to shake his hand again and thank him for teaching them both about volleyball and life.
