A Cut For A Cause

On December 1, Cornerstone Co-op Vermilion Food Store Produce Manager, Justin Carriere, shaved his hair and beard to support cancer. After three years of growing his hair Carriere had it shaved off and donated to Wigs for Kids; a nonprofit organization specializing in supplying wigs to children with cancer.

The Wigs For Kids program aims to boost self confidence and enables children to maintain a positive attitude while

fighting their illness.

Carriere also raised $1,340 to be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society.

From 2016 - 2017, the Canadian Cancer Society funded $40 million in leadingedge research, as well as provided prevention and screening services and support to families. Transportation, accommodation, hospice, and coping are all a part of the society’s work.

After losing many family members and friends to cancer, supporting cancer research is a very personal endeavor for

Carriere. This is the second time Carriere has cut and donated his hair to support cancer, and plans to continue to do so in the future. Fellow staff gathered in support and cheered him on as he said goodbye to his long locks.

According to www.cancer.ca it is estimated that in 2017; 206,300 Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer and 80,800 will die from cancer. On average, 565 Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer every day, and 221 Canadians Kaneesha Pelletier finished off by shaving will die from cancer every day.

Vermilion Christmas Farmer’s Market

Hundreds of community members gathered at the Elk’s Hall for the Vermilion Christmas Farmer ’s Market on November 28.

According to Manager, Evelyn Throndson, approximately 35 vendors filled 44 tables with a mix of Christmas decor, specialty and handmade items. Everything from yard and housewares to woodwork, jewelry, baking and preserves, fresh produce, sewing, knitting, and clothing could be found at the market.

“It was our biggest show of the year with a variety of vendors from as far as Edmonton,” said Betty Selte.

Luke and Macy Martin enjoyed whirlygigs made by Lorne Jenkins. Born and raised in Vermilion, Jenkins travelled from Edmonton for the Christmas market.

“It’s nice to come back and see people we haven’t seen in a while. You can’t have too much fun,” said Jenkins as he encouraged visitors to play with the

whirlygigs to see how they worked.

His wife Carol accompanied him with several quilted items and said, “It’s fun to have a hobby. As you get inspiration from fabric and the works of others encourages you to do more.”

Jessie Hind from Mar wayne just started attending markets this year even

though she has been making items with her family for approximately 15 years.

“I like being able to make things for people to enjoy that you can’t find in a store every day; unique items for a unique price,” said Hind who shared a collection of woodwork, canning, and bath bombs.

In 1907, the government of Alberta p ur c h a s e d t h e A l b er t a intere st of Bell Canada and set up the Alberta Gover nment Telephone Com pany, a Crown Corporation which was the precursor to AGT. The following year, a telephone line was extended from Edmonton as far east as Mannville, Alberta. The following year, telephone installation was begun in this small community on the Canadian Northern Railway. A telephone office was set up in S. K. Smith’s Drug Store, with various employees of the store operating the Kellog switchboard. In 1912, the Telephone Company extended the service to the rural areas surrounding Mannville.

In October 1915, a new telephone exchange was opened in Mannville with a northern electric switchboard.

On 1 December 1917, the exchange was moved into a newly constructed telephone office on Main Street, built

by N e i l M a c K i n n o n , w h o b e c a m e mayor one year later. MacKinnon had also constructed the original Mannville School and the McQueen Memorial Church. The Telephone Agent was Ellen Ewing. She was assisted by Mrs. Alice Rutherford, who would take over as Agent in 1920 and continue in this role until 1965, while herself residing in the AGT building.

During the 1930’s, AGT found the cost of maintaining rural telephone lines increasingly expensive, as fewer and fewer people were subscribing to the system due to the Depression.

In par ts of the province, including the Mannville district, the telephone system was disconnected. Some of the rural areas formed mutual telephone companies. Around Mannville, six separate companies were formed, but, before long, they were amal gamated into one company, centred i n M a n n v i l l e . T h e o l d Te l e p h o n e Exchange thus found renewed use.

Shor tly af ter World War II, AGT returned to the area, buying out the Mannville Mutual Telephone Company, and securing direct connections with Edmonton and elsewhere. On 1 May 19 65, automatic dialing was intro duced to the Village and its hinterland with the use of one of the first underground cable systems to be installed in the province. As a result, the Mannville Tel e p h o ne E xc hang e wa s c l o se d.

The building served for a while as the community library and has continued as a prominent historical feature of Main Street Mannville ever since.

In October 2009, the Mannville Telephone Exchange was designated a Provincial Historic Resource. Its historical significance lies primarily in its provision of structural evidence of telecommunications in early Alberta. It is one of the oldest telephone exchange building s in the province, at least of those buildings dedicated exclusively to telephone service. It is also a reminder of the early development of downtown Mannville, a major farming community in east central Alberta.

Each year when my children were little, I always dreaded the day when they would pop the question regarding Santa’s authenticity and when it did happen, like most parents, I panicked and said: “Why of course he is!!” “You see him every year don’t you?” It’s not easy when the Santa talk comes your way, but I think your answer depends on how you perceive Santa to be.

If your only perception of Santa is the magical world of the North Pole with elves and flying reindeer then yes, you can say that Santa isn’t real. But if you believe that the term Santa portrays more than the magical world of make-believe and a jolly old elf then your answer to the question can be a

definite yes, that Santa is real. I truly believe that how you perceive the term, Santa is what defines your answer to the question is Santa real? I believe that the term Santa still represents the true story of St. Nicholas, who was born during the third century in the village of Patara. Nicholas, who became the Bishop of Myra was known throughout the land for his generosity to those in need, and his love for children. Nicholas used his whole inheritance to assist the needy, the sick, and the suffering.

I wholeheartedly believe in the persona of Santa, because I think Santa comes in many shapes and forms and lives in a person’s heart and soul.

Not everyone will use the suit to take on the character of Santa but still represents the kindness and care in which the character portrays. For example, Vermilion’s Santa’s Anonymous which each year provides gifts

to someone who may not otherwise receive one during the holidays. The Ron Moses Christmas Dinner which provides fellowship and a wonderful meal to someone who otherwise may not have that opportunity. There are so many other examples I could name but just don’t have the space to do so. You could consider any act of kindness as an example of someone taking on the persona of Santa; they don’t have to be dressed up in a red suit. An example of just an individual could be the person who pays for your coffee or meal at a drive-thru, how many times have we heard about that? Or look to our front page, to do what he did may seem trivial to some, but for those children a wig can be pretty significant.

to carry out their act of kindness as seen last week when Santa was out and about greeting people on the street and bringing a smile to a child’s face.

The point is, Santa is not just the man in the big red suit, with the jolly laugh and a magical world that no one ever sees.

Santa is the love and compassion that lives inside us; it is that feeling of happiness we feel when we do something to brighten another person’s day. Santa isn’t just about one season, Santa is with us all year round. So when your child asks you is Santa really real, think of how you perceive Santa to be and give them your answer. For me, my answer is simple, yes Santa is really real.

4H Outdoor Club Kick off

The shooting project started our year off with a bang with a kickoff at the gun range. Our Survival project had their first meeting at the fairgrounds where they did some slingshot shooting. The canine project had their first meeting at the fairgrounds as well and did some work with their dogs.

We had our first meeting on October 3 and held our elections. Our club president is is Derek Hryciuk, our vice president is Colt Jackson, and our secretary is Cole Teasdale. Holly Arychuk is treasurer. Our project representatives are Jack Mccormack for the shooting project, Cole Teasdale for the outdoors project, and Caitlyn Arychuk and Hannah Devos for the canine project. Our club reporters are Caitlyn Arychuk and Holly

Arychuk, our historians are Kjell Miller, Taylor Devos, Hannah Devos, Hannah Mccagherty and Desirae Cutler, and our parliamentarians are Parker Carlson and Billy Mcgrath.

We are happy to introduce the snowmobile project into our club. Their first meeting is on November 26. The shooting project’s next meeting will be on November 18 at Fall into 4-H, the survival project meeting will be at Fall into 4-H as well. The Canine project will meet on November 19 at the Vermilion Fairgrounds.

Well you couldn’t say that this week I ’ ve f e l t o n w h a t would be called the brighter side of the l e d g er, c o n s i d ering first of all I’ve finally begun to notice that heading both to and from work has descended into taking place in the dark.

So when the wife put out one of those LED therapy lights and placed it rather prominently in the kitchen…well I was wondering if she was not so subtlety trying to send me a message.

It could perhaps have been an indicator of her getting in front of my mood curve and the speed it was heading toward the ditch when the furnace started acting up on the weekend. By the time

Lookin’ On The Bright Side

my quick trip to Vermilion and back was over, the temporary fix to “get us through the winter” was sounding rather obviously like it wasn’t going to hold as long as expected. By Monday the repair guys were back again at short notice to get it pulled apart to replace the shaft for the fan. Yes, our first bad luck euphemism of the week is I literally “got the shaft”, about 1 inch diameter mild steel to be exact, and worn out in just the right place such that the fan sounded like a brick tumbling and jamming in a running dryer.

Well…it’s much quieter around here now, or at least it will be until I open that bill.

No sooner had I settled back in to finishing my lunch upstairs in my office (not even an hour elapsed) when I started hearing a high pitched wail (I’m sure it could be heard throughout the neighborhood) was coming from outside

in the yard. Throwing on boots quickly, it didn’t take long to discover our new eco-sewer tank was having an issue… the outfall had frozen up for some reason and now the float inside the tank was saying something like it was “up to the gunwales” (euphemism #2) and couldn’t pump any more out. So beside the fact I couldn’t stop fixating about being “full of it” all day (don’t you all need to go to the bathroom right now), the alarm kept screeching periodically until we could finally get someone out to service it the following day. So heading to work next morning meant first shower by wash cloth. That’s lovely…didn’t they have to do something like that during The Blitz in London during WW2? You certainly wouldn’t want to be caught streaking down the street in your birthday suit to the bomb shelter in the middle of an air

raid, would you?

And after a week like that, you would almost think it would take its toll in other ways physically. Well that assumption would be entirely accurate as a slight twinge on the weekend turned into a real (and actual) “pain in the neck” (euphemism #3) later. There is not much amusing than a code jockey trying to work looking at 3 monitors all day and not being able to move your head. So some ice pack sessions and some chiropractic neck snaps later, I at least could get through the day again finally without relying on my peripheral vision to get me through. At least that WAS true until the wife handed me the photo radar ticket from the mail. Hmm…the pain in my neck suddenly back and I’ve always liked my comedy black. That old Dark side is looking rather tempting right now.

Birdwatchers Come Together In Vermilion To Participate In The 118th Christmas Bird Count

Another Christmas Bird Count season is around the corner! Between December 14, 2017 and January 5, 2018, tens of thousands of bird and winter enthusiasts will rally together to count millions of birds across the continent as part of the 118th year of this long-running wildlife survey. On December 16, participants in and around Vermilion will take part in this fun winter tradition, many rising before dawn and counting birds until sunset!

Each year, Bird Studies Canada and the National Audubon Society help coordinate and support the efforts of more than 2500 counts throughout the Western Hemisphere. Christmas Bird Counts are run across Canada and the United States, as well as in Latin America, the Caribbean, and some Pacific Islands. Data collected during the Vermilion Christmas Bird Count include details on the number of birds of each species seen or heard within a local 24-km diameter circle. Surveying this circle year-after-year contributes valuable long-term information on how winter birds are faring, both in your locale and across the country.

Novice or experienced, the Christmas Bird Count is for everyone. Whether you like exploring forests, fields, and waters in search of lingering migrants, or prefer counting feeder birds from your window with a warm mug in hand, the Christmas Bird Count offers diverse opportunities for participation. No matter how you contribute, all Christmas Bird Count obser vations are used to study the health of winter bird populations over time and guide conservation strategies

to help birds and their habitats.

“Every Christmas Bird Count participant is an important part of this valuable project for birds,” says Liz Purves, Bird Studies Canada’s Christmas Bird Count Coordinator. “Whether you participate for bird conservation, for some friendly birding competition, or for an excuse to get outside in the winter, your efforts are meaningful for birds.” The skills and dedication of thousands of volunteer Citizen Scientists harnessed during the Christmas Bird Count achieve incredible results that professional scientists and wildlife biologists could never accomplish alone.

Mannville Multi 4H Club News

The Mannville multi 4-H club has had a terrific start to their year. We will be running a variety of projects this year including Cleaver, photography, foods, and horse. Sledding Through The Past

The Vermilion Ridge Riders successfully hosted their sixth annual Snowmobile Expo at the Vermilion Regional Centre on December 2. The expo is the largest vintage indoor Snowmobile show in western Canada and is growing every year. There were 101 vintage sleds being shown this year, a significant increase over last year’s 83 sleds. The expo also featured the new sleds from all of the major snowmobile dealers along with various types of snowmobiling related gear.

Many snowmobile enthusiasts and vintage collectors from British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan turned up to browse the sleds, both new and vintage, and use the opportunity to discuss their favorite hobby; sledding. Some of the oldest snowmobiles shown dated back to the 1950s and the majority of the vintage snowmobiles are still in running condition.

The Vermilion Ridge Riders were very pleased with the turnout and response to

this year’s show.

“This is the biggest and best show we have ever done” said Jim Zardorozny, a Vermilion Ridge Rider member.

Like previous expos, the admission included a food bank donation and this year’s show was on track to meet or surpass last year’s food bank donation total of $750 and four boxes of food.

Other snowmobile clubs attended including the Myrnam Snowmobile club who have 120 kilometer of trails between Myrnam and Derwent.

“We are hoping to connect trails with the Vermilion Ridge Riders trails. That is the goal, to add more trails and cabins and eventually connect us all,” said Addam Saruk, president of Myrnam Snowmobile club and a director for the Alberta Snowmobile Association.

Ways To Give Back This Christmas

(NC) Christmas is the season of giving. It’s always fun to buy gifts for friends and family, but it’s also rewarding to give to those in need. 3 Ways For Families To Give Back Together

(NC) With the hustle and bustle that comes with the “most wonderful time of the year,” it is often easy to forget the true meaning behind this joyous occasion. But showing kids that giving feels just as great as receiving can be turned into fun activities for the entire family.

Chrysler Supports Vermilion Wellness Coalition

Vermilion Chrysler hosted a Beef on a Bun Lunch on November 28 – 29 with proceeds going to support the Vermilion Wellness Coalition.

Visitors had the opportunity to be entered in a draw with the chance to win a full vehicle detail package valued at $475.

“We wanted to sponsor an event with the coalition because they offer family events for everyone to enjoy. We would also like to thank the community for the support,” said Sales Manager Travis Ehalt.

Shirley McGrath September 5, 1934 - November 2, 2017

On November 2, 2017 Shirley McGrath of Vermilion passed away at the Vermilion Health Care Complex at the age of 83 years. Shirley is loved and remembered by her husband of 55 years, Bill McGrath of Vermilion; children: David (Vicky) McGrath of Cape Town, South Africa, Ellen McGrath (Don Hicks) of St. Albert and Catherine (Craig) Lee of Edmonton. Also remembering her fondly are her grandchildren: Finn and Wynne McGrath, Liam McLennan (Samantha Bruns), Alec McLennan, Sydni Hicks-MacDonald, Lucas and Mya Lee. Shirley is fondly remembered by numerous nieces and nephews as well. She was predeceased by her parents William and Effie Gunn and her sister Ardis Dobson.

The family would like to thank Dr. Kostyk, Dr. Gerber and the ER and Palliative Care staff for the excellent care received in Lloydminster Hospital. Thanks also go to Dr. Ali Alshalchi and Vermilion Health Centre staff for the kindness shown during Shirley's time in hospital but also the special care provided when in Palliative Care.

A Celebration of Shirley's life was held on November 10, 2017 at First United Church in Vermilion. We wish to thank Rev. Andrew Kinoti Lairenge and Rev. Charles McNeil, members of the First United Church UCW and the Preston Ladies Group as Honourary Pallbearers, Bill Dobson for reading the eulogy, pianist Glen Teasdale, piper Barry Roth and Alva and Harry Creech of Crossroads Funeral Chapel.

this year J.R. Robson started a Senior High Boys volleyball team. Having teams in only four of the last twelve years, there were so many uncertainties. What was certain was that after three years of competitive and successful volleyball in Junior High with Coach Mr. Craig Campbell, despite being a young team for the competitive category, the team was ready to compete at the Senior level. “The boys caught on to the higher level of senior volleyball and really started to compete with the stronger teams”, says Coach.

They finished in the top eight at a 24-team tournament in Camrose during the first week of the season. By the end

of September they had won their first tournament in Bonnyville, winning every set they played. Expectations became high but there were some tough teams to play and the team didn’t win again until Lac La Biche’s Wow Pow Tournament in late October. This tournament had almost all of the strong teams from the North East zone in it and proved to be a real test. The boys played very well, beating Westwood (Fort McMurray) in the quarter finals, Host Lac La Biche in a crazy semi-final and finishing off the tournament by beating Fort McMurray Composite High in the final for their second tournament win. This ranked the team first in the zone for the 2A Competition. At zones they won their pool with three wins, one of which was

a tough match against Elk Point. They continued playing well enough to make the finals where they played their best match of the tournament, beating a very good Elk Point team to win gold at zones. This gave the team a berth into the Provincial tournament.

Provincials was a great competing against the best 2A schools in the province. It was the first time in 36 years that J. R. Robson School brought a senior boys’ volleyball team to the Provincial level. Chance put the team in a very tough pool and at the end of three days the boys ended the round robin with 3 wins and 2 loses and in a 3-way tie for second place in their pool. The rules ended up placing them in a 3-4 single set playoff to advance. Rundle College

came out strong building a good lead which J.R. Robson erased but eventually lost 25-23. Even though they did not make the medal round, the team competed hard and showed that they belonged. They pushed the best teams in the province and defeated the eventual bronze medal winners in round robin play and losing to the gold medal team in three games in the round robin.

“Provincials was a lot of fun, the team learned a lot but the great news is that 9 of the 10 players are back next year,” boasts Coach Campbell, also our junior Math and Outdoor Education teacher.

The Grade 4 classes took a local field trip on the morning of November 29 to learn more about waste management in Vermilion as a part of the Waste in Our World Science unit. First they stopped at Valley Auto Parts to discuss reusing vehicle parts. They then went to the Town of Vermilion Recycle Lot to view a variety of recycling bins and grass recycling areas. Their next stop was outside of Community Closet where they talked about reusing clothing. From there, they went north of Town to the Waste Transfer Station where we met with Fran and learned that Vermilion garbage is transported to Ryley by semi-truck. A garbage truck dumped a load in the storage building and they were lucky enough to be able to see that happen. They then looked at the various areas where the recycling process starts (metal, batteries, oil, electronics, paint and a lot more). Thank you to Fran for the excellent tour. Their

is Lego Club with Mrs. Hinton, which runs on December 7, 14, and 21 from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.

Skating at the Rec Center will be starting soon for all of the students in December.

Music is in the air at VES. The Grade 6 students will be Christmas caroling at the Lodge and the Hospital Extended Care on the afternoon of December 4. This year, the kindergarten kids are teaming up with the Grade 1 and 2 students to have their Christmas concert in the Lakeland College Alumni Theatre on December 20 at 7 p.m. If you like a daytime show that is less crowded, you can watch them in their dress rehearsal on December 20 at about 9:15 at the college. The Grade 3-5 Christmas concert will take place on December 21 at 7 p.m., also at Lakeland College.

Their dress rehearsal will be the morning of December 21 at approximately 9:15.

VES had to say goodbye for a year to Mrs. McLaughlin and Mrs. Goodwin, as they are both out on maternity leave. We

‘The Best Little Newfoundland Christmas Pageant…Ever!’

On the evening of December 2, the Vermilion Allied Arts Council presented ‘The Best Little Newfoundland Christmas Pageant Ever’ at the Alumni Theater. Whizgiggling Productions, an Edmonton based theater company, spent the evening entertaining theatergoers with humour and song while portraying the message of what rediscovering Christmas is like through a child’s

eyes.

Whizgiggling Productions has entertained with this show in Edmonton for the past seven years, but decided this season would be a great opportunity to take the show on the road.

“After seven years, we decided to tour and take it to the next level. This show really kicks people into the Christmas Spirit,” said director Cheryl Jameson.

The play is based on Barbara Robinson’s

novel ‘The Best Christmas Pageant Ever’ and was adapted for the stage by Petrina Bromley & Aiden Flynn, both of whom are from Newfoundland.

According to the program The Best Little Newfoundland Christmas Pageant….Ever!

Is about Mrs. O’Brien, who has been put in charge of directing the Pageant after the original leader, Mrs. Armstrong, hits a moose! Thinking that it will be a dull task with the same old Mary and Joseph and

the same old Christmas carols, until the Herdmans to show up for the auditions!!!

The Herdmans are “the worst kids in the history of the entire world” who don’t know anything about Christmas, beyond the hamper they get every year, and have only showed up because they heard there were free refreshments. What has the potential to be the worst Pageant ever turns out to be the best one as everyone learns the true meaning of Christmas.

will be hosted by South Korea from December 9 - 19, 2017. While they are there they will take part in several cross country ski races, including the Gangwon Provincial Championships and the South Korean National Championships.

“We met several skiers from South Korea last year when they came to race here. They were all ver y good skiers, so it will be a good race for us to compete in” says Ree. “We also get to be immersed in the culture of South Korea. We will eat a lot of interesting food and we even get to go and spend some time in someone’s home.”

Alberta Sport Connection, a provincial corporation, has been involved in international sport exchange programs since 1974. Through sport exchanges wit h our s i ster prov in c e s, A l b er t a has established strong relationships with Hokkaido, Japan and Gangwon, Korea.

International Sport Exchanges are a two-year commitment: one year of the exchange involves Alberta athletes, coaches and officials representing a specific sport visiting the sister province; the other year involves the sister province’s athletes, coaches and officials visiting Alberta. At the end of the two years, the Alberta Sport Connection and the sister province negotiate a new agreement involving a different spor t. The Inter national S por t Exchange is a par tnership project between Alberta Culture & Tourism, Alberta Sport Connection, Provincial Sport Organizations, and International Relations.

They basically ignore all of the banter that c omes from the Nor th. The South Koreans aren’t worried and our government would not let them go if they thought it was too dangerous, so I am not too concerned. Besides, a lot of the posturing and sabre rattling is between North Korea and the United States. Do you think that someone from Europe wouldn’t let their child come to Canada because we are right beside the United States?”
