Both seasoned and beginner competitors signed up for the 2017 Saddlebronc/ Bareback School held at the Lakeland College Equine Centre in Vermilion from November 3 – 5.

Instructors shared knowledge on safety, horsemanship, and emotion, and gave plenty of feedback throughout the weekend.

“When you can break through the barrier of fear, then you can learn something. I love the lifestyle that goes along with the sport,” said Clay Elliott, Professional Saddlebronc Rider.

Elliott had attended the school in Vermilion when he was learning, and was back for his second year as an instructor this year.

Craniosacral Therapy And Physioyoga At Masterpiece Therapies

Masterpiece Therapy Submitted

Fall has been a busy season for Masterpiece Therapies physiotherapist Janine Lange. Always seeking to expand her knowledge base and learn new techniques that will benefit her patients, Janine c ompleted the Upledger Institute International’s Craniosacral Therapy (CST ) Level One course in September and Shelly Prosko’s “Your Brain on Pain” Physioyoga (PY ) workshop in O c tober.

These ap proac hes ex pan d o n the training Janine received earlier this year when she received her Certificate of Completion in the Integrated Systems Model (ISM), taught by internationally recognized physiotherapist Diane Lee. ISM uses a wholebody approach and seeks to find the “primary driver” — the area creating symptoms, which is not necessarily the area where symptoms are experienced. When combined with CST and PY, the root cause of symptoms can be determined, allowing treatment to be focused and treatment time reduced.

The central nervous system (CNS) is comprised of the brain and spinal cord. This system receives information from all par ts of the body (the peripheral nervous system or PNS), which in turn sends signals to the spinal cord. These signals are then processed within the spinal cord to determine whether the signal is important enough to send this information up to the brain. If the signals reach

the brain, a sensible story (based on experience and signal intensity) must be made, triggering either a protection mode (“alarm” response) or a dampening mode (“block” response). The foremost researchers and leaders in pain science agree that individuals with persistent pain experience consistent “alarm” signals which lead to physical changes in their body’s makeup over time. Physiotherapist and creator of “Life is Now Pain Care” Neil Pearson recognizes the complexity of pain when he suggests that pain is not just a physical manifestation of symptoms, but is also influenced by biology, psychology and social elements.

Neil Pear son and Shelly Prosko teach that when it comes to recovering movement in individuals with persistent pain, the choice of activity must be safe, gentle and challenging so that it just touches the edge of pain, must be performed while breathing calmly, keeping body tension low, and monitoring the pain level during and after the exercise. If the “alarm” signals that lead to the experience of pain are to change, the body (and the CNS) must be challenged by trying new tasks and developing new patterns of movement.

To achieve this, willing participation in the recovery process, choosing activities that are meaningful and enjoyable, and being ready to direct attention to and spend time practicing new strategies is necessary. Lena Home states that “It’s not the load that breaks you down, it’s the way you carry it.” Learn-

ing about and understanding pain is key to knowing how to better manage it.

CST is a light touch method that detects small movements in the cerebrospinal fluid that protects the brain and spinal cord, and determines the m o b ilit y of t he b o nes of the head and spine extending down to the tail bone. This assessment and treatment method involves making small adjustments to the body to better align the bones and tissues to promote heali n g an d e n h an c e fu n c t i o n. It a l s o incorporates myofascial release techniques, which involves addressing the muscles (and the connective tissue that is found within and around muscles) to reduce the tension placed on the joints.

The goal of PY – a blend of physiotherapy and yoga therapy – is to create awareness of the body’s postures and typical movement patterns. With this awareness, the position of the joints and tissues can be optimized, and muscle control maximized, thereby decreasing pain. Both the ISM and PY methods involve “stacking” the joints to encourage proper alignment, and using breathing strategies to create space and allow for appropriate muscle contraction.

Masterpiece Therapies offers oneon-one time and attention and seeks to provide a high quality of care that integrates the latest research and training with hands-on physiotherapy skills.

Assessment and treatment sessions

are individually tailored and may now include CST and PY principles and practices, in addition to traditional physio techniques and the advanced ISM approach. The aim is to determine the cause of pain, and then work to reduce pain and maximize function through meaningful movement.

A group of local business owners have entered into a purchase agreement for the Craig’s Department Store buildings with the hope of preserving their historical value.

The new owners would like to acknowledge John and Doug Stewart for their significant support and contributions towards the community in the past and to thank them for their understanding and efforts towards the current project which would not have moved ahead without them.

At 112 years in business, Craig’s is the second oldest family-owned business in its original location in the province (with Long’s Value Drug Mart being first). Finding the historic buildings beautiful and unique, the new owners plan to renovate the interior and exterior storefronts similar to the three original independent facades.

Feeling that the downtown core in Vermilion is in a unique position because it has seen a sizeable amount of renewal and investment in the past decade, the new owners felt that redeveloping the Craig’s buildings would be a good fit to what the Town of Vermilion and businesses have done to revitalize the area. Upcoming Production – The Nutcracker Ballet

The Wainwright Dance Academy will be hosting their 4th Annual Nutcracker Ballet at the Alumni Theatre in Vermilion on December 9, with performances at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

To experience the Nutcracker coming to life, you can purchase $15 tickets at Lakeland Country Florists at the Lakeland Mall in Vermilion. Tickets will also be available at the door.

The traditional Christmas story will be shown through a dance production accompanied by Tchaikovsky composed music. Performers from Shape Studio in Vermilion will assist in the production for the second time, and the audience will be captivated by the seasonal exchanges and

depiction of the enchanted kingdom.

According to Artistic Director-Sandy Sundborg, who has been producing this story for over 30 years, the group uses a lot of props and tries to change it up every year with new costumes and arrangements.

“Some people have made a Christmas tradition of it and have been attending for four years in a row. You don’t need to know someone in it to be able to enjoy it,” said Sundborg.

With festive fun, the dancers contribute a great deal of preparation, and throughout their performances help spread Christmas cheer throughout the community.

Approximately 50 people gathered for the Lakeland College’s Green Energy Doors Open event in Vermilion on November 4.

From Decentralized Energy Canada, Keynote Speaker, Anouk Kendall said, “They are producing energy closer to where we need it which will significantly reduce the cost,” She also noted that people should take control and find out about their own generation and consumption. Kendall shared that 60 - 70 percent of energy produced goes to waste.

Lakeland College’s Lyle Lawrence discussed on-farm energy management, and Phase 3 Solar’s Christian Marriot discussed farm energy audits. Lakeland

College’s Rob Baron discussed Renewable Energy and Conservation information with potential students who were in attendance before a barbeque was held by the Veterinary Medical Assistant students to raise funds for an upcoming field trip.

Kuby Renewable Energy Ltd’s Adam Yereniuk discussed developing solar photovoltaic projects for homes as well as businesses and first nations. Lakeland College’s Rob Baron spoke again on the economics of photovoltaics and the municipal climate change action centre as well as an online cost calculator.

While I sit here and live in a peaceful country where I have never personally experienced a war on my home land, I can somehow imagine the families of war who are affected every day.

I can imagine the worry and heartache the families and friends of our military have to face knowing their loved one could be shipped out at a moments notice and may not return.

I can only try to imagine what it is like when they are informed that their loved one is severely wounded or missing. I can only try to imagine the heartache and emotions they must feel when they are informed that their loved

has given the ultimate sacrifice and won’t be returning home alive. It must be completely devastating! My heart aches for them just thinking about it.

A couple of nights ago, I was watching a T.V. show called ‘Seal Team.’

The show has some pretty graphic and realistic war scenes in it, and the first thought that came to mind was no wonder some come back with PTSD and other issues; it must be horrible to experience the nightmare of war first hand. I sit here and try to think what it would be like to walk a mile in their shoes. To see what they see, to feel what they feel, the knowledge that at any moment they may have to take another person’s life even though it is necessary to keep themselves alive, or to witness their team member/s losing their life.

War is ugly, even when it is necessary; the mental and physical torture each member of our militar y has to endure is unimaginable really. Watching a T.V. show can give a glimpse into their world, but nothing even close in comparison.

I know some people will say they chose the military life, but it is the most selfless act a person can give. They choose this life to help protect every one of us, they chose it so we can have all the freedoms we have in this country, and for that, they deserve the highest of gratitude!! Without them, our country would be defenseless.

Stand tall shoulder to shoulder on November 11th and show our Veterans that we are so very thankful for their service for our country and lets’ remember the men and women who

have given the greatest sacrifice for their country protecting us and giving us the freedoms we currently have today. On November 11th there will be a Remembrance Day service held at the Vermilion Cenotaph at 10:30 a.m. with the parade starting at 10:45 a.m. come out and show your thanks. The Poppy Campaign is also underway, and all donations made to the campaign will go back into the community to help Veterans and their families in need of assistance.

Fettuccine Alfredo has an interesting story.

Back in 1913 at Rome, I t a l y, a r e s t a u r a n t owner, named Alfredo made simple homemade pasta, coved in butter and parmesan cheese, for his wife who was pregnant, and struggling with nausea and keeping food down. The dish was later added to the menu. In 1920 famous silent picture American actors, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks traveled to Rome and dined on this simple meal. They were so enthralled with the dish that they asked for the recipe to take back to North America. When they returned home to Hollywood, they sent a gold spoon and fork and a photo of themselves to Alfredo. The local newspaper did a story on the event, and shortly after Alfredo’s restaurant became the “in” tourist

1/4 cup butter 2 cloves of garlic finely chopped 1/4 teaspoon of each dried basil, oreg ano and thyme 1/4 teaspoon pepper 3/4 teaspoon sea salt 2 tablespoons of flour 2 cups cream – percentage of choice, I use 35 percent 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese 3 tablespoons parmesan cheese Over medium low heat, in a good heavy bottomed frying pan or pot melt the butter, add the garlic and the seasonings. Cook for a few minutes, add the flour, cook and stir for a minute or two, add the cream half a cup at a time and stir until it is all blended and then keep adding the cream using the same method. Stir in the grated cheese and the parmesan cheese. Serve over fresh hot pasta. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley if desired.

It became a creamy white cheese sauce made with lots of butter and parmesan cheese. This recipe is a very good homemade Alfredo sauce that skips all the food additives and uses wholesome ingredients. If you are gluten free, you can skip the flour and reduce the cream to 1 and a half cups. The cheese can be 1 cup of Swiss, mozzarella or half a brick of cream cheese, but I think the Swiss cheese has the best flavour. For more pasta goodness I have included my home made noodle recipe. There is really no comparison from store bought pasta to home made.

It has been a year since my Dad Franklin has passed. I’m not sure I could put i n t o w o r d s eve r y experience that has taken place in the time since, but putting pen to paper, as it were, is part of figuring that out. How we each process it, and how each of us gets through it…that is what makes us unique as human beings.

Much of that experience was not mine, and as richly as the stories were readily received I never felt the same isolation, never grew up in the receding shadow of the Depression, never hitched a team, ran a binder, or pitched stooks into a threshing machine. Each generation has its own issues to face, a different set of obstacles to create an answer. My experience has been of Generation X - the Cold War, Oil industry booms, the first video games and personal computers, Walkmans, 24-hour cable TV, cell phones, the Internet…and how could I forget Disco, 80’s music, Dungeons & Dragons, and Star Wars. 3 eggs 2 scant cups flour 1/2 teaspoon salt Combine the eggs, salt and most of the flour into stiff dough. The amount of flour really depends on the size of the eggs.

When you have non-sticky dough that is stiff, but not too stiff, roll it out paper thin, or up to the thickness of two pieces of cereal box. If the rolling pin starts to stick or the dough sticks to the bottom, add a dusting of flower. Roll up the flat sheet loosely like a jelly roll and cut into strips. Unroll and if they are too thick, you can give the noodles another roll to further flatten them. Set the strips to dry. Cook in boiling salted water, approximately 8 minutes depending on the thickness of your noodles. Serve with your favourite sauce or simple butter with salt and pepper. Fair warning, the dough is tough to roll, but the end product is so worth it. If is too tough, I get my husband to roll.

Arrests Made In Recent Property Crimes

Vermilion, Alberta - Vermilion RCMP have made two arrests related to recent property crimes in the area: Brandon Hank (25) has been arrested and charged with a variety of offences including three drug related charges and eleven property related charges. Hank remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in Vermilion Provincial Court on

November 6, 2017.

Georg e Siemens (3 4) has been arrested and charged in relation to incidents involving break and enters to two local businesses and theft of a vehicle from each. Siemens remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in Vermilion Provincial Court on November 6, 2017.

As these matters are now before the courts, there will be no further updates provided.

Vermilion’s David DeVos is eager to be a part of the ‘Motivate Nunavut Tour’ once again and began a province-wide suicide prevention tour in Coral Harbour, Nunavut on November 1.

According to DeVos, he and television personality, Ariel Tweto, will head out on their fifth tour discussing goal set ting and encouraging people to embrace life.

“Our goal is to have influencers motivate local influencers to create change and bring awareness to the social problems and the oppor tunities so that everyone can be successful and live life,” said DeVos who is determined to remove the stigma surrounding suicide.

DeVos went on to say, “We do this up north because there is a lot of suicide that happens, but we can’t ignore the fact that it happens here too. Everybody knows somebody that is affected by suicide. We need to not be afraid to talk about it.”

According to DeVos, influencers on tour will include a past NHL player, an Olympian, “Yukon Men’s Courtney

Devos has been overwhelmed by the supporters of this tour including Calm Air who donated flight costs, Artic Co - ops who donated accommodations, the Kivalliq Inuit Association who donated funding and helped engage communities in expressing the importance of suicide prevention, as well as Eskimo Point Lumber, and the communities themselves who made contributions.

“Anybody can influence change. We don’t just fly in and then fly out. We identify what systems or programs we can bring in to make things a little less hard for people, and become a part of the community by keeping in touch and returning to the same communities to bring them together, and not leave them without support,” said DeVos. Overall, the four-month tour will visit over 18 communities in the Kivalliq, Qikiqtaaluk, and Kitikmeot regions of Nunavut. Beginning in Coral Harbour, DeVos and Tweto will host sc hool

presentations, home visits with youth and elders, a radio show, a formal community presentation and square dance.

They will be using the hashtag #StayStrong on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter throughout the tour. According to

a recent Twitter post, Tweto was excited to begin the journey seeing two caribou, an arctic fox, and inukshuks on her way to Coral Harbour.

Linda Edgcombe Spreads Positivity And Laughter At Partnership Breakfast

The Town of Vermilion hosted Linda Edgecombe at the Partnership Breakfast which was part of their speaker series on November 2, at the Pomeroy Inn and Suites.

Partners of the breakfast included the Vermilion Rotary Club, the Government of Canada, and the Vermilion and District

Chamber of Commerce. Parkview Alliance Church’s Pastor, Brad Shellenberg, gave a blessing before speaker, Linda Edgecombe, captivated the audience.

Well acclaimed motivational speaker, author, and humanitarian, Edgcombe travelled from Kelowna, British Columbia. She kept participants engaged with humour, and challenged them by asking questions.

She stated that keeping active and making

new memories, going to bed early, engaging in laughter, reducing clutter, being accepting, and contributing are important steps in maintain resilience.

“The most successful people are the ones that are most self-aware. The difference between happy people and unhappy people is their level of gratitude,” said Edgecombe.

She asked participants how their energy

levels were, and when was the last time they did something for the first time. “”Stop pretending to be alive,” said Edgcombe.

Vermilion Play Development Fire Safety On October 25 and October 26, Don Keenan who is a Fire Instructor from Lakeland College Emergency Training Centre, came to visit the children at Vermilion Play Development.

Keenan taught the children about fire safety and what they should do if there is a fire. The children were all given the opportunity to try on firefighter gear and learn how it protects a firefighter. After the presentation, Keenan showed them a real fire truck and let them turn on the lights. The children enjoyed their visit from Keenan and showered him with hugs. Earlier this month, the children were given the honour of decorating a firefighter helmet for the Helmet Hall of Fame in the Lakeland College Emergency Training Centre. On October 20, the children presented the helmet to the graduating class and then were given a donation from the students as they wanted to give back. The Vermilion Folk Club will be hosting Lynne Hanson on November 18, at 8 p.m.

“We saw her perform at Wide Cut Country Weekend in Calgary, and she packs a punch! She’s a really interesting young lady with a beautiful voice” said Rita Barr, Vermilion Folk Club President.

Canadian songwriter, Lynne Hanson, has toured the US, Europe, and the UK either solo or with her band, ‘The Good Intentions.’

According to her biography, the group is known for their hard-living style of music with gritty ballads, while Hanson is

known for her voice that echoes a deep, bluesy croon. Those who’ve heard the Texas grit in her voice think she could have come straight from the south.

Her latest c d, ‘ Uneven Ground,’ was produced by Scott Nolan, and in the past, Hanson has opened for the Grammy Award-winning Albert Lee. In 2009 she was nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award, and in 2010 she was the winner of the Colleen Peterson Songwriting Award. Her voice has been compared to Mary Chapin Carpenter and Lucinda Williams.

Upcoming Remembrance Day Ceremony

The Remembrance Day Ceremony will be held at the Vermilion Cenotaph on November 11, at 10:30 a.m.

A parade will begin at the Legion at 10:45 a.m. on route to the Cenotaph, joining the public in giving reverence to those who in the line of duty, have served and continue to serve.

Af ter the ceremony, visiting will commence at the Legion. A display will be set up for viewing the latest addition to the Snelgrove’s collection of Vimy memorabilia; a 3D replica of the crest carved underground at Vimy Ridge by Rober t Snelgrove’s great uncle, Private Thomas Alban Snelgrove.

The Royal Canadian Legion’s Field Marshal Alexander Branch No. 11, who hosts the ceremony in Vermilion, will be conducting prior ceremonies

on November 8, at Vermilion Elementary School at 9 a.m., St. Jerome’s School at 11 a.m., and J.R. Robson School at 1 p.m.

The Poppy Campaign is currently under way and contributes to a number of veteran causes and the Royal Canadian Legion assists in other areas including adjusting to civilian life, providing support for mental health and PTSD, assisting veterans at risk of homelessness, providing outreach and visitation initiatives; providing mobility supports, home adaptations, and independent living services for veterans.

Remembrance Day 2017 It is a great honour to bring greetings to you today as your MLA. Remembrance Day is a day steeped in both tradition and sorrow. To remember those who died but also to assure our veterans that we will not forget the sacrifices made by them or their fallen brothers and sisters. To remember the persecution of so many men, women, and children as they fled and continue to this day to flee from brutality.

As Canadians, it has been our role to keep the peace throughout some of the most horrific moments in history. Today we also remember and thank our brave men and women in uniform who serve us at home and abroad. Many have witnessed first-hand just how horrible the human race can be, and have come home bearing the unseen scars of that experience.

As we witness graphic video of world events today, let us be reminded that God called us to love not hate, to forgive and not hold onto offence, to reach out to others in compassion. There are many stories of great compassion witnessed in the depths of war.

Today we come together to remember November gratitude to those who serve, let us never forget and 11, 1918 – when at the 11th hour of the 11th day of always appreciate the sacrifices given for our freethe 11th month, the Armistice between the Allies and dom.

Canadian Military History for Archibald Armstrong McRobert Submitted Born: Jan 9, 1890 Eskdalemuir Dumfriesshire Scotland Emigrated to Canada: 1912 Died: Mar 24, 1948 Hazeldine, Alberta (58 years) Interred: Dewberry Cemetery, AB. Battles: Ypres 1915, Battle of Somme 1916, Vimy Ridge 1917, Passchendaele 1918.

Medals: 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal Archie began his military service as a trooper in the 19th Alberta Dragoons Cavalry Unit in August 1914.

When England declared war on Germany August 4, 1914, Canada was then also at war. The Minister of Militia called for volunteers for mobilization to Valcartier, PQ on August 6, 1914. One hundred troop trains began transportation of the men from across Canada arriving in Valcartier, PQ on August 15, 1914. Thirtyone troop ships were loaded with men, horses, equipment, and food and left Gaspe Bay on October 3 and 4, 1914 destined for Portsmouth, England.

They were escorted by seven warships, making this the largest convoy up to this point in history. Archie was on board the S/S Montreal. When they were 570 miles from England, the S/S Montreal and the S/S Aluania had to steam ahead of the convoy to unload gear ahead of the arrival of the convoy. Due to two German submarines reported at Portsmouth they had to divert to Plymouth. The two ships arrived at Plymouth on Oct. 14, 1914, with the remaining ships arriving on October 15, 1914. From Plymouth, the troops were moved by rail to Salisbury Plain training facility. The conditions at Salisbury Plain turned wet and dismal, and a lot of men broke camp and fled in search of a few days of fun and dry comfort. On January 10, 1915, Archie was AWL (absent without leave) for 29 hours and was docked two days pay.

Some of the troops stayed away until it was time to leave for France and then came back, accepted their punishment quietly, as the price they were willing to pay for respite from mud and misery. On February 8, 1915, the Canadian troops were transported across

the channel to St. Nazaire, France and from there by train to the Front. On February 15, 1915, Archie arrived in Hazebrouck, France and trench warfare training with the British troops began. He was at The Battle of Ypres (March 3 to March 27) which was the first mass use of poison gas by the German army.

This was the first victory of a former colonial nation (Canada) over a European power (Germany) on European soil. On April 7, 1915, the unit marched to Cassel area west of Ypres. Archie engaged in training in machine guns, grenades, signalling, Cavalry drills, and other Military training. He dug trenches, built rail tracks, ran telephone cables. He also did Military police duties, message dispatching. Archie was a member of the Canadian Corps Cavalry Regiment (CCCR). They fought in The Battle of Somme from mid September 1916 to the middle of November 1916. On September 24, 1916, Archie suffered a gunshot wound to his right arm at Becourt Wood, at Becordel-Becourt, France. He was admitted to General Hospital Hardelot, France on Sept 27, 1916, transferred to No. 7 Stationary Hospital Boulogne, France on Oct 17, 1916. From there he was sent to No. 3 Large Rest Camp in Boulogne on Oct 20, 1916.

Archie was promoted to Corporal on October 26, 1916, and returned to duty on November 19, 1916. March 9, 1917, Archie was promoted to Lance/Sergeant with the Canadian Light Horse. He fought in The Battle of Vimy Ridge April 9 to 12, 1917. Archie was teaching at the Canadian Military School (France) when he was promoted to Sergeant on September 2, 1917. During the Battle of Passchendaele, on October 10, 1918, Archie suffered a shrapnel wound to his left thigh and at the same time his horse, Ranger, was also gravely wounded. He had to put his horse down which was heartbreaking for him as Ranger came from a ranch near Calgary and he and Archie were partners for the entire war. He often said that was the hardest thing he ever had to do in his life. Ranger had been wounded several times during the war and Archie had always been able to doctor him back to health.

Archie was admitted to hospital in Etaples, France on October 13, 1918, then transferred to Middlesex

War Hospital at Napsbury, St. Albans, Britain on October 15, 1918. He was listed as “dangerously ill” and was in the hospital for 122 days, during which time he refused all pain medication for fear that they would knock him out and amputate. He was left with shrapnel in his leg. On November 11, 1918, the Armistice was signed. On February 13, 1919, Archie was moved to Epsom Military Convalescent Hospital, Woodcote Park, Surrey England for 24 days and was discharged on March 10, 1919, and transferred to Kinmel Park Camp 13 Wing, Wales. He was granted 12 days furlough and went home to visit his parents at Cowburn Lockerbie, Scotland (Dumfriesshire). March 22, 1919, he returned to Kinmel Park Camp 13 to wait with the other Canadian soldiers to be transferred back to Canada. On May 2, 1919, he embarked to Canada on the S/S Cassandra. He was Honourably Discharged May 18, 1919, in Edmonton, AB.

Remembering Private Henry Desrochers Angela Mouly Reporter

One hundred years ago, Private Henry Desrochers gave his life for his country, serving in the 13th Battalion of the Canadian Infantr y (Quebec Regiment).

Desrochers was born in Montreal, Quebec on September 22, 1892 to Adelard and Helen Brien Desrochers.

From there, Desrochers moved with his family to Manitoba in 1906.

According to www.canadianfallenheroes.com, Desrochers was a single briquetier who volunteered with the 90th Winnipeg Regiment before enlisting at age 22 in Montreal, Quebec on May 28, 1915.

Desrochers served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in the 57th Battalion (Canadien –Francais), and went overseas on the SS Saxonia in October of 1915 to train in England for nine months.

In July of 1916, Desrochers landed in Fran c e and at B oulogne, was transferred to the 13th Bat talion.

Desrochers faced the eight kilometer Vimy Ridge with three lines of German trenches and machine gun nests. On April 9, 1917, Desrochers took part along with the four Canadian Divisions who began the siege to secure Vimy Ridge with 983 guns

and mortars taking part; at age 24, Desrochers died the same day.

His name is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial in France, and on the Manitoba Historical Society War Memorial, as well as on page 227 of the First World War Book of Remembrance.

Desrochers, was the great uncle of Vermilion’s Town Councillor, Robert Pulyk. Until searching the internet in recent years, Pulyk was only familiar with the fact that he had a relative that had died at Vimy Ridge, but no further details. Pulyk also received some photographs and letters from his grandmother that can be viewed at http://www.veterans.gc.ca.

During his ser vice, Desrochers wrote several letters to his father and Pulyk was able to gather some personal anecdotes from these l e t t e r s . T h e f a c t t h a t h e c h e rished letters from home, or anticipated another shipment of chewing tobacco, along with the fact that he had been injured and endured a hospital stay before going back to the front lines was all included before the salutation, “Your son, Henry.”

“It ’s an honour to know that we had a relative who served in WWI and laid down his life at Vimy. I look forward to having a plaque made by the Canadian Fallen Heroes Foundation, and by having it online, my grandchildren will be able to know their histor y. Having the oppor tunity to represent the Town of Vermilion during the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge in April of 2017 held special meaning for me.

Rumbolt 5th In ISA Prairie Tree Climbing Competition

August 26 and 27 saw the return of the annual Prairie Chapter tree climbing competition (PCTCC) in Saskatoon, SK hosted by the City of Saskatoon. Lloyd Rumbolt, a resident arborist of Vermilion placed 5th in the two day event. Rumbolt is the owner/operator of a professional tree service company called “Lloyd’s Limb Service Inc.” based in Vermilion.

The event is organised by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), a 90 year old not for profit organization that promotes the professional practice of arboriculture and fosters a greater worldwide awareness of the benefits of trees.

Unlike logger sports competitions, these climbing events are completed without the use of spikes on their boots and trees with large spreading canopies are typically chosen to set up the challenges. The competitors access the trees with specialized gear including ropes and other fall arrest equipment the same as

they would use in the day to day operations. Competitors rely on their equipment to aid them in moving through the canopy to different stations and complete a work simulated task. Points are accumulated for speed, safety and efficiency during a pre-determined amount of time.

A total of 26 competitors including 6 in the women’s division, all started out on Saturday morning to complete 5 separate challenges. The Work Climb, Throwline, Belayed Speed Climb, Footlock and Aerial Rescue are the preliminary competitions. The goal for these industrial athletes is to score in the top four of preliminary rounds and earn a spot in the Sunday event called “The Masters Challenge”. The Masters Challenge opens up the stage for a little more creative display of skills to wow the judges and spectators.

Prizes are awarded to each event and overall winners from industry sponsors.

Lloyd has competed in regional events more than 15 times and 3 times at inter-

nationals.

Competitors as well as other chapter members and volunteers share a strong passion to learn and hone their skills making the competition a fun way to learn from each other and promote the profes-

sionalism of their industry.

The 2018 PCTCC will be held in Winnepeg, MB as the event rotates through the prairie provinces, with many climbers already eager to take another shot at the championship title.

Lakeland College – Women’s Rowers Win Gold

The Lakeland College Rowing Team’s Novice Women’s 8+ won gold at the Western Canadian University Rowing Championships (WCURC) at Elk Lake Victoria, British Columbia on October 28.

The Regatta was organized by the University of Victoria Rowing Club and was sanctioned by Rowing BC. The Lakeland College women’s 8+ and men’s 4+

crews attended for their last event of the season. According to coach, Peter Walsh, the men’s crew raced well rowing clean and strong in a class above theirs with one woman who had just competed in another race, two novice members and one senior member. The women who had been rowing less than a year raced twice; once in a junior varsity event against women who had rowing for 5 – 6 years; and once in their own novice category.

“In a six-boat final, they just edged out the University of Victoria who placed second, and the University of Alberta who placed third. The girls were outmuscled and had to row very technically well to win. At the start, the University of Alberta was in 1st, and Lakeland College was in 2nd, but at 700m, the U of A got in trouble and was unable to get an oar out of the water, so Lakeland took full advantage. It was very exciting as they only won by four seconds,” said coach, Peter Walsh.

Walsh went on to say; the winning team had picked up two members; one from the University of Regina, and one from the University of Calgary.

First-year Lakeland College student, Tay l or Wo o d l an d, fro m M ar y l an d, Saskatchewan had her first experience with rowing this year. Woodland says, the Vermilion campus doesn’t have as many sports teams, so it was an accomplishment she was proud to be a part of.

“I love rowing because it is a challenge, and I love a good challenge,” said Woodland. The sport is demanding, but you feel great after.

“Even just going to compete in such a beautiful place with calm, warm water was a great opportunity. The team all came together and rowed really well/ clean. Winning gold was the icing on the cake,” said Woodland.

Now a hunting trip can begin at home by using a computer to locate and analyze hunting grounds.

Hunters can also visit their hunting grounds and subsequently transfer data collected using a GPS to maps on their computers.

This lets hunters become familiar with their territory so they can exploit strategic sectors. Astute hunters can also use motionactivated trail cameras to take photographs of the game in their territor y. These devices can even transmit photos directly to a remote computer using cellphone radio waves.

But that’s not all. Electronic game calls are now available for those who aren’t proficient enough in the art of calling game animals.

And for those whose hearing is starting to deteriorate, there are also personal sound amplification devices that can be worn in the ear.

Of course the most recent innovations are related to the virtual world. After all, it isn’t surprising that more and more mobile apps are available to hunters, including some for checking current hunting regulations.

Senior boys and girls volleyball teams played in Lac LaBiche Friday, October 27.

“They played up to their potential and won the tournament,” Coach Campbell proudly boasts of his boys. Now they rank number one in the zone as they played at home last weekend. J. R.’s junior boys hosted Highway 16 North last Thursday and boys won the banner, and the girls played at St. Jerome’s.

We haven’t forgotten that the 2017 Fall Supper included so many community organizations and local businesses including the generosity of Lakeland Country Florists, Fantasy Flowers, and McDonald’s Foods.

Halloween was a very active day at St. Jerome’s with activities happening throughout the school. Sadie Granigan and Anastasia McCullough with the help of other Student Council members put in several hours on Sunday and Monday creating an amazing Haunted House, in the mezzanine, for the students grade 5-12 to experience on Halloween Day. Many a Spartan felt fright down through to their toes!

Even some staff! Thank you for your leadership in planning, creating and hosting this spooky activity. The High School level also held a Costume Contest with the following students being honoured: Amanda CollinsBest Dressed, Rachel Campbell-Funniest, The Saders-Best Group, Sean Ulrich-Most Effort and Cameron Bartley-Least Effort.

Middle level student council worked for many lunch hours to prepare a fun afternoon on Halloween for students from grade 6-8. A costume contest kicked off the afternoon. Landon Reiniger, Mary Ulrich, Reyne Hoare, Nathan James, Kjell Millan, and Layne King were recognized for having very creative costumes.

Following the costume judging, students rotated through different stations and even had a chance to walk through the haunted house created by senior high student council. The afternoon was concluded with sharing snacks brought in by the students.

Grade 9s from J. R. Robson School participated in the annual nation-wide Take Your Kids to Work on Wednesday, November 1, 2017. This Canada-wide event puts over 200,000 Grade 9 kids to the workplace each year to give them real-life experiences and sneak peek at their career interests.

In the last hour of school on Halloween day students in their ghoulish, adorable, creepy, or hilarious costumes toured the Haunted Surgery Room (hosted by the science lab, watched “Hocus Pocus” on big screen, played basketball, volleyball, and floor hockey in the two gymnasiums, or carved pumpkins in the concourse. Festive

contests included Donut on a String, Wrap the Mummy, Sweet the Pumpkin, Pumpkin Toss, and Move the Candy Corn.

Elementary students enjoyed celebrating Halloween Day with a variety of activities. At 9:30 am kindergarten to grade five students gathered in the darkened gym with parents and guest to celebrate the 16th Annual Monster Mash Happigrams put on by Mrs. Roth’s Grade four class. They entertained us all with an energetic performance of the “Monster Mash”, the poem “It’s Halloween” and the Christian song, “Every Move I Make”. Congratulations to the students who were presented with Happigrams for their hard work and improvement in their classes for the month of October. At 1:00 p.m. the elementary students gathered in the gym for a second time that day for a Costume Parade and Dance. The costumes were amazing this year. The remainder of the day was spent playing games and sharing treats in individual classrooms.

SOCKTOBER was a huge success at our school! Our Spartans will donate a total of 558 pairs new socks to Lloydminster Interval Home!! Mackenzie won the sock drive by bringing in 211 pairs of socks, with only a difference of two pairs of socks; Fraser house had a donation of 209 pairs, with Cartier donating 138. October’s Charity Friday saw students and staff donate $220 that will benefit Sister Gloria’s Mission in Peru.

Our grade nine students participated in the national, “Take Our Kids to Work Day” program. Students spent the day in the workplace of a parent, relative, friend or volunteer experience and learn about the world of work.

Congratulations to the Grade 9 Girls volleyball team on their successful week of volleyball. On Thursday, November 2 they hosted the “Highway 16 Championships” playing strong throughout the tournament and defeating Marwayne winning the banner. At Spooktacular on October 27/28 they went undefeated during round robin play and ended up capturing the Bronze medal. Thank you to Mr. Whelan for coaching this group of young ladies throughout the season. Awesome work, girls!

Congratulations to the Jr. “A” Boys for winning silver at “Highway 16 Championships”. After two hard fought battles, the gold medal game was split between our Spartans and JR Robson. Despite their best efforts, the third set was not our to win.

Thank you to Mrs. Reiniger for coaching this group of young men. Well done, Spartans!

A great big Spartan shout-out goes to grade eight student Layne King! Layne has been bowling since the age of 3. This past weekend, he earned first place, in Edmonton, at Junior Provincials. Layne moves onto compete at Nationals, in Regina, in May. Way to go Layne!

Middle Level and High School Report Cards will be sent out on Wednesday, November 8. Elementary Report Cards go out on Friday, November 17. Parent/ Teacher Interviews for all grades will be on Monday, November 20 and Tuesday, November 21.

On October 27, the VES Hot Lunch Program hosted a Howling Halloween dance in the VES gym.

There were well over 200 little monsters who danced the night away. Snacks were served, candy was tossed and an evening of dancing and fun was had by all. The hot lunch program hosted this fundraising evening as a way to give back to the families who support the program throughout the year. Roughly $1000 was made, which will go towards operational costs of the hot lunch program.

They are very grateful for all of their volunteers who helped out to make this evening such a success. They hope to see you again next year.

VES had a Scholastic Book Fair from October 24-30. Congratulations to Hunter Cusack and Mrs. Bast’s classroom, each winning $25 in free books from the draw made from Thursday night’s late night shopping extravaganza. The profit made from the book fair will go towards purchasing more books for the Library/Learning Commons. A big thank you goes out to all those volunteers who helped out during the book fair - 40 Library Club Members, Britt Feist, Deanna Zubiak, Lorraine Moet, Nikki Ryan, Shannon Leonard, Judy Smith, Kate Gilberg, Debra DeRoo, Ms. King, Mr. Beecroft, Natalie Symes and Sydney Allen - and to Mrs. MacMillan, who

put in a ton of time to make this so successful. Also thank you to the parents, students, and staff for all their support for this literacy event.

Halloween at VES was a huge success.

There were several pumpkins carved and/ or decorated, many classrooms showing the Halloween spirit, and many treats enjoyed by all. We had a costume parade at 1:00, followed by a ten minute dance, and then the students all had classroom parties for the remainder of the school day.

Grade 1 students went to the Vermilion Lodge and the Hospital Extended Care on the morning of Halloween Day. They wore their costumes and sang eight songs for the residents. The students were treated to a spider or ghost lollipop at the Lodge and a cookie and juice at the Extended Care. We want to thank both sets of residents for the treats and for allowing the Grade 1 students the opportunity to perform for them. In the afternoon, the Grade 1 kids played games and enjoyed healthy snacks.

This year, Kindergarten will be selling Mom’s Pantry Products as a fundraiser. The money that is earned will directly benefit the Kindergarten students, so it is their hope that every family will be able to participate in this fundraiser in some way. They use the money to purchase a wide range of learning resources, puzzles, games, toys, and manipulatives, as well as materials they need to do a variety of fun activities throughout the

year. Thanks a lot for everyone’s support.

Our VES drama club is working hard to bring you a fantastic performance of Dragon Trouble by D.M. Larson. We thank freedrama.net for permission to perform this play. Come out and watch the talented Grade 4-6 actors/actresses in their productions on November 17 at 7:00 pm or November 18 at 2:00 pm. These productions will be free, so bring everyone for a fun-filled time. Hope to

see you all there.

Stay On Your Feet And Stay Active- November Is Seniors’ Falls Prevention Month

Submitted Let’s face it; falls can happen to anyone at any time but the reality is, as we get older our risk of falling increases. Falls are the leading cause of injury among older adults over the age of 65, and one in three Alberta seniors will fall once a year. With or without an injury, seniors who experience a fall may develop a fear of falling.

This can lead to restricting activity, which can increase their risk for another fall. “It is important to encourage seniors to get out and stay active in their communi-

ties,� says Emily Post, Provincial Continuing Care. “It is easy to think that restricting activity may reduce your risk of falling, but it can negatively affect your quality of life, contribute to physical inactivity and decreased muscle mass and lead to social isolation.�

November is Falls Prevention Month.

This year’s theme is Finding Balance – Stay Independent. Prevent Falls. “Falls risk management and prevention is everyone’s responsibility. I challenge you to look around your environment and find some-

thing that could increase someone’s risk of falling – this might be in your home, at work or in your community – and make a change. We all have a role to play to help prevent a fall before it happens.�

While Fall Prevention Month is geared to seniors, it’s a good opportunity to remind all Albertans about the risk of falling. As temperatures drop, the risk of snow and ice increases. Every year, thousands of Albertans are hurt falling on icy roads and walkways.

Injury prevention experts say the best

way to avoid falls on ice and snow is to walk like a penguin. • Stay low • Feet pointed out • Walk flat footed • Use your arms for balance It’s not the fastest or most graceful way to walk, but it will help keep you on your feet.
