The Vermilion Skating Club hosted their first day of Canskate and PreCanskate lessons on October 10.

Sixty-five skaters are registered with 14 being Pre-Canskate, 15 Canskate, 12 Starskate, two Adult skaters and 22 Power skaters.

“We are thrilled for the new season that is underway; we have Rebecca Zajic coaching again and Ashton Stieb from Mar wayne who is also joining her. We look forward to the next five months watching everyone grow and develop stronger each day!” said Paige Jaremco, Vermilion Skating Club president.

Fire Safety Storytime At The Library

There was a demonstration of dressing in fireman’s gear followed by children dressing up as well. After storytime everyone headed over to the Vermilion fire hall for a tour.

Approximately 100 people attended the Meet Your Candidate luncheon hosted by Lakeland Mall on October 12.

Members of the community were thrilled to have the opportunity to ask

candidates questions and get to know them in a relaxed environment. Vermilion Pizza provided Samosas and water, while people enjoyed snacking as they visited.

According to Vermilion Pizza manager, Syed Shah, the event allowed them to

show off some of their specialty items.

“We would like to thank the community for their support. In business, we have to think about our community, and not just ourselves,” said Shah.

As for direction for Vermilion Town Council, Shah suggested that another grocer y option such as No Frills or Walmar t would be a benefit to the community.

First United Church Fall Tea And Bake Sale

This week is Small Business Week, and in conjunction with that the Vermilion Chamber is holding the Small Business Awards Gala and the Vermilion Voice would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the nominees.

Small Business Week is not just about attending a fancy gala and getting nominated by your peers; it is also a week to celebrate all the small businesses in our community. Vermilion has a number of small businesses, and while it does continue to grow each year, we do lose businesses as well. It is extremely important to support our LOCAL businesses as much as humanly possible. I understand it is not always possible to get

everything you may need here, but if we don’t support the businesses we do have they may be forced to close their doors, and that in itself would be a disaster; as we would then be forced to travel elsewhere for the services we could once obtain within our community.

Over the last couple years the increase in thefts and break-ins in our community has definitely spiked, and while I can not specifically say the cause of such activi-

ties (I do have my suspicions), I find it very disturbing and feel as though we need to become a more vigilant and proactive community. Just in the past couple of weeks I have heard of at least four break-ins to our local businesses, if you are out and about and see anything that looks in the slightest bit suspicious contact the RCMP and report it! We need to fight back and not let these criminals to harm our businesess or community!

cattle and the group of 2018 bull calves and heifer calves.

The sale this year consisted of five heifers and viles of semen off one of Ockerman angus top herd sire. The sale ran this year through www.DVauctions.com in a horse style race all based online from September 29 - October 1. Even though

the day was filled with rain there was a crowd of 20 people who enjoyed the BBQ at noon and looked at the sale cattle that were on display.

Capsule Wardrobe

With the snow, and shift in temperatures, it ’s time to put our summer clothes away, and transition into fall and winter. We live in a country that not only requires four different seasons of clothing, but our wardrobe must provide us with the ability to dress to meet the extreme variations in temperature within each season.

Welcome to Alberta, where if you don’t like the weather, don’t worry, it will probably change in a few hours. I often hear people say that they don’t know how to dress, which really means that, they have no idea if how they are dressed in the morning will still suit their needs later on in the day, as the weather changes. The solution is often to think layers, in clothing choices, as the seasons shift.

All of these different seasons and temperatures of ten means that we acquire a lot of clothes. The changing of

the season is also a perfect time to do a wardrobe purge and re-vamp. While I am not a big fan of the mantra, if you haven’t worn it for six months; then throw it away, but I do think that there are times that we do need to go through our closets, to devise the best possible working wardrobe for the upcoming season.

Putting a great wardrobe together is often based on having core neutral pieces. The choice of these pieces will depend on if your job requires you to dress professionally, or if you can dress casually. We usually need to have a mix of casual, business and dressy attire in our wardrobe. There is a concept called a capsule wardrobe, which is a great starting place when pulling your wardrobe together. A capsule wardrobe is designed to provide all your dressing needs with as few as 22 pieces, yet because these pieces are carefully chosen, the combination can yield you over 80 different outfits. Some of the pieces, such as blue jeans and dress slacks will cross into all seasons, while others such as a winter

coat will only be used for five-seven months, we hope no longer! Here are a sample fall and winter capsule wardrobe.

1.) dressy coat 2.) casual coat 3.) blue jeans 4.) black jeans 5.) black blazer 6.) black dress pants 7.) white shirt 8.) white t-shirt 9.) black pencil skirt 10.) 11.) little black dress 12.) dressy black top 13.) longer cardigan in black 14.) cardigan in grey or light tone 15.) long sleeved top in black 16.) black tunic in desired length 17.) tunic in a favorite colour in plain or print. 17.) shirt or sweater in a second favorite colour in plain or print. 18.) tank top in black 19.) tank top in white or a colour 20.) dress to wear to a wedding or other special events 21.) black leggings 22.) additional sweater, shirt, skirt or pants to suit your lifestyle in a colour of your choice. If for example, you would never wear black leggings, then just sub them out for a type of pants that you would wear. You may already have lots of pieces in your closet.

In addition to these 22 pieces, consider both high and low winter boots,

shoes for work, dressy shoes and sneakers. With only 22 pieces of clothing, you can create over 39 outfits. When you are choosing clothing pieces for your capsule wardrobe think about versatility, and how the pieces will work together. Here are examples of a few combinations, a black pencil skirt can be paired with a white tank/shirt and blazer, or the black dressy top for a two-piece “little black dress” or with a long sleeved top in black, accessorized with jewellery or a scarf. You can pair it with any of the tunics, shirts, and cardigans for a more causal or professional look. Finally, the skirt can be paired with any sweaters that are chosen for the base wardrobe. You can probably create ten outfits just with the pencil skirt. Sub out the skirt for a pair of dress slacks, leggings or blue jeans, and you will have many more combinations.

For added speed in the morning getting dressed, you can record your favourite outfit combinations in a notebook, so there is no need to spend precious time figuring out what to wear.

Public Awareness and forms of help available are one of the main keys in bat tling rural crime, and Starke believes awareness of such crimes is not an issue.

“Everyone I speak with knows what is going on and there is a great deal of interest in coming up with effective solutions. We will have Battle River Victim Services and Kitscoty Crime Watch in attendance to provide information on the services they can provide,” added Starke. “Many volunteer efforts, such as Crime Watch, are already in place.

Other groups of citizens have banded together with neighbours to watch out for suspicious activity as well.”

Curtis Anderson Speaks At Lakeland College

Brain Injury Survivor, Curtis Anderson, delivered a presentation to Lakeland College’s Human Services students in Vermilion on October 10.

Approximately 40 students had the opportunity to hear Anderson’s Road To Recovery speech, as well as hear some cowboy poetr y, and see firsthand some of the tasks that Anderson has worked to overcome barriers with. Anderson was able to give tips to students who may be working with brain injury survivors in the future. “ My accident and recover y have s h ow n m e h ow s t r o n g I c a n b e. I wouldn’t trade it for anything because if you’re able to help someone, it says a lot,” said Anderson.

Anderson encouraged students that if working with survivors to themselves acknowledge by giving them direct eye contact and respect and encouraging others to do the same while on community outings. He also encouraged having survivors influence and help plan their own schedule by incorporating their desired activities.

Anderson noted that to be successful he practices proper rest, diet, and exercise, and during one of his poems he said, “Respect others and respect yourself.”

Four-month-old Blakely Underhill visited Grade 2 students at Vermilion Elementar y School on October 10, as part of the Roots of Empathy program.

Students sang a hello song and obser ved differences from her first visit, some thinking that the baby had grown taller. Students watched the baby’s reactions while they sang songs and while coordinator, Sharleen Moses introduced different positions, toys, and movements.

Students noted that the baby was

teaching them with her actions, and discussed crying as the main way for a baby to communicate.

“Blakely cries loudly but just when she wants something,” said mother, Erica Underhill.

Students noted that bottles, diapers, soothers, and walking might help to soothe babies.

60,000 Students Will Voice Their Political Opinions In First-ever Student Vote Program

Submitted Even though they are under the voting age, more than 60,000 elementary and high school students from throughout Alberta had the opportunity to consider the future direction of their community and vote for candidates running for municipal council and school board trustee.

The Student Vote program is a handson learning program that enables teachers to bring democracy alive in the classroom, and empowers students to experience the voting process firsthand and practice the habits of active and engaged citizenship.

Participating schools are supplied with free learning materials and election supplies to help them engage in the campaign and organize a parallel vote.

Students learn about local government and democracy, and research the issues and candidates through classroom activities, family discussion and campaign events. In the culminating activity, students take on the roles of election officials and coordinate the election process for their peers. On Student Vote Day, students cast ballots for the candidates running for mayor/ reeve, councillor and school board trustee.

The results are tabulated and released publicly following the closing of the official polls.

A total of 934 schools registered to participate in the Student Vote program for the 2017 local elections, representing 158 Alberta municipalities. This is the first Student Vote program to be held for municipal and school board elections in Alberta.

With support from the Government of Alberta, Edmonton Community Foundation, Alberta Teachers’ Association, Galvin Family Trust, Elections Alberta and the Government of Canada, the Student Vote

program was offered free to schools.

“CIVIX is striving towards the expansion of Student Vote to more jurisdictional levels across Canada, so that students have an opportunity to cast a ballot every time there is an election,” said Taylor Gunn, President and Chief Election Officer of CIVIX. “We are delighted to have offered our first local elections program to Alberta schools and we would like to thank our partners for making this project possible.”

The Student Vote election results will be released at the close of polls on Monday, October 16 (8:00 p.m. MT).

All of this is made possible by regular people, with regular lives, who somehow felt it of themselves to help others during their time of need.

I’ve been part of the fire department for 28 years and thinking back on all those years, it’s been about one-third of 85 years, I’m very proud of our community, our fire department, and its members, both past, and present.”

Myrnam Mayor Ed Sosnowski, took a moment to praise the firefighters, highlighting their courageous nature. “I cannot emphasize enough how much we all appreciate the extraordinary commitment that our firefighters have made to make our community safe, along with being the first responders,” Ed said. “Firefighters save hearts and homes. They have remarkable courage and dedication to keeping us safe. We know that we can never repay their sacri-

fices, but we can honour their dedication and commitment. Most of all, we should be thankful to their families, for their loaning us their loved ones.”

County Reeve Allan Sayler also spoke well of the commitment of the firefighters past and present and how the County has been proud to supply the department with needed training, equipment upgrade and fire trucks. He offered a gift of thanks to the Myrnam Fire Chief on behalf of the County.

MLA for Lac La Biche-St. Paul-Two Hills, David Hanson gave his appreciation and gratitude for the department and all that they have done, emphasising the bravery of the members to charge into a potentially life-threatening situation.

UCP leadership candidate Brain Jean also gave his thoughts on the firefighter’s department.

David Yackimec of the Myrnam Ag Society gave his thanks on their behalf and offered a donation to the department.

The closing speech of the evening was

also brought greetings from the Albert Fire Chiefs. Having joined the fire department in 1986 he thanked retired Fire Chief David Dubelt for giving him the opportunity that would play such a prominent role in his life. “Our firefighters deal with such a wide range of situations once they leave the hall as well as all the training that has to be done so that they can respond effectively,” Brad said as he reflected. “Two thoughts I’d like to share: Could you live with a firefighter? and Once a firefighter, always a firefighter.”

After reciting a most touching poem about the life of a firefighter and bringing the audience’s attention to the screen in the corner of the hall where a painting of an old man looking in a mirror with a reflection of a firefighter staring back at him, Brad thanked the Myrnam Fire Department and with the help of John Fedoriuk, paid respect to the fallen firefighter members by performing the traditional ringing of the bell.

The evening closed with music by The Playboys and much dancing until the wee hours of the morning.

On October 14, the Myrnam Fire Department celebrated 85 years of service. The evening at the Elks Hall in Myrnam began with people coming in at around 5. By the time everyone had arrived, a total of 170 guests had filled the nicely decorated hall.

Dennis Maksymiuk, President of the Myrnam and District Firefighters Association and a member of the Myrnam Fire Department, served as the emcee for the evening and asked Pastor Gary Dupuis to come up to say grace and recite the Firefighter’s Prayer.

The evening steak meal, which was put on by Gloria and Bernie, was offered as a buffet. Towards the end of the meal, Dennis requested that the members of the Myrnam Fire Department stand up to be acknowledged. He also took a moment to respectfully acknowledge the past fire chiefs and deputy chiefs that were with them.

“These men and women have led the Myrnam Fire Department for 85 years of dedicated service and have shown leadership that has kept us strong and trained throughout all these years,” Dennis said proudly. “Firefighters define courage. There are not many volunteer groups that are expected to be on call 24/7, leave a job at a moment’s notice or put down their children and rush to the scene of an emergency, placing themselves in harm’s way often for a complete stranger’s life and at times, someone we know. But it is not only the firefighters that make sacrifices while serving our community but also the families that allow us to do this special volunteer work. I want to say thank you to our wives and families.”

Ducks Unlimited Shares Marketing Opportunities In Conservation

Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) held a Marketing Opportunities in Conservation seminar at Lakeland College in Vermilion on October 12.

S p o n s o r e d by t h e A l b e r t a R e a l Estate Foundation, sessions were held at Olds College before their meeting in Vermilion. DUC’s Warren Robb presented a group of realtors with information regarding rural wetland properties, the types of projects that could be done there to give the landowner funding and improve the habitat, encouraging the return of waterfowl in the area.

According to DUC, set tled areas of Canada have seen a 70 percent decrease in wetlands with some prairie areas seeing up to a 90 per cent decrease of wetlands.

Ducks Unlimited has recently taken a dif ferent approach and removed restrictions surrounding their projects.

In order to encourage healthy functioning ecosystems, DUC is offering projects including Wetland Restoration Leases, Conservation Easement, and Resolving Land Purchases. The Realtors were eager to see other marketing options and felt the projects discussed

A conservation easement on the proper t y will prote c t the wetland s and sustain its function as a grazing and haying source.

VES Hosts Travelling Art Exhibition

The Vermilion Elementary School is hosting a ‘Kleskun Hills: Views and View Points’ travelling art exhibition by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts throughout October.

Ar tists featured in the collection in c lu d e N ao m i D euteko m, Tere s a Durand, and Helena Mulligan.

The collection highlights an area east of Grand Prairie that is known for being the most northern badlands landscape in Alber ta. According to curator, Todd Schaber, the area became protected land in 1979, and sightseers can view fossilized frag-

ments of dinosaur bones, wood, and hills with alternating layers of clay, sand, and narrow seams of coal. Visitors can also view Grassland bird species and 160 species of wildflowers.

Aside from geological interest, tourists find historical interest with the trail leading to a traditional First Nation’s Burial Ground where Beaver and Cree people once buried their dead.

The Alberta Foundation for the Arts offers educational material to integrate visual arts into school curriculums through their travelling exhibition program. Their collection covers over 2,000 artists and over 8,000 artworks and is brought to more than 300,000 Albertans each year. First Annual Agriculture Education Teachers’ Symposium Brings Life To The Classroom

A g f o r L i fe i s b r i d g i n g t h e g a p between the agriculture sector and classroom curriculum this fall in a jampacked day of learning and professional development.

The Agriculture Education Teachers’ Symposium is the first effort to bring educators and farmers and agriculture industry experts together. “Most families are three to five generations removed from the farm today, and that disconnect leads to a misunderstanding about how food is raised,” says Luree Williamson, CEO, Ag for Life.

“We feel the best way to shift this gap is to have agriculture within the curriculum throughout K-12 education.”

O n F r i d a y, N o v e m b e r 2 4 , t h e Cochrane RancheHouse will host the

one-day event that features keynote and informational speakers, along with panel discussions and breakout sessions, all geared to aiding educators in incorporating agriculture into their existing curriculum. Topics will range from big-picture issues in agriculture such as sustainability, the different types of crops being grown today, pesticide use and the role of bees, to the use of container gardening in the classroom and careers in agriculture.

The Symposium will be held annually in locations across the province.

Many of those involved in the day understand the importance of sharing agriculture and the facts and science behind the growing of food. “Funny thing, everybody eats, and so relies on agriculture. However, not very many people know much about agriculture

Katherine attended Holyrood Country School, Islay School and graduated from Vermilion High School. She held a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Alberta.

Her teaching career began during her university days at Myrtle Hill Country School near Kitscoty, Alberta. She took her first full time teaching position with the Edmonton Separate School Board teaching at St. Margaret’s for one year and then moved to St. Kevin’s School.

Katherine taught large classes of more than one grade at both schools.

When the position of Vice-Principal at St. Kevin’s opened, she applied and was given the position. Katherine also taught grade nine while doing the administrative position. She resigned in 1965 and took a year off.

During her year off she did some teaching at J.R. Robson High School in Vermilion and at Kitscoty High School. In the fall of 1966 she started teaching at the Lloydminster Comprehensive High School. During the time she was there she taught grade twelve English. She retired in 1986. Katherine could have retired a year sooner however she stayed on one more year as Shawna was in grade 12. Katherine was honoured to give a family member a grade 12 diploma.

Katherine looked after her Mom until her Mom was hospitalized. Later on in life, Norman had an accident with a post pounder and he lost one eye.

Katherine became the chauffer as well as the caregiver.

Katherine had her first hospital admission at age 83! The doctors and nurses were astonished!! At 85, this hospital admission was just a few days over 3 months. Katherine was notified on Thursday September 7th that she had to go to a nursing home.

We all know that was not in her plans.

Katherine Ann Carey passed away on September 10, 2017 in Vermilion, Alberta at the age of 85 years. She will be lovingly remembered by her 8 first cousins as well as extended family and friends. She was predeceased by her parents Jack and Margaret, her siblings Norman and Marie, as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Sean Ulrich represented St. Jerome’s at High School Cross Country Zones.

Zones were held at Muriel Lake on Wednesday, October 11. Sean placed 28 out of 47 in the Jr. Boys division.

Congratulations Sean and thanks for showing your terrific St. Jerome’s spirit.

Thank you to McDonald’s Family Foods and the community for their generous donation to our hot lunch program. The donation of $1000.00 will make a difference in many students’ lives.

St. Jerome’s Class of 2018 is already busy fundraising for their graduation ceremonies that will take place in May.

At Muriel Lake by Bonnyville, Sydney Crowe, Sam Ree, and Bray Crowe qualified for Alberta Provincial Cross Country Running Championship Finals.

Sam is the junior boy zone Bray 9th and Dylan Eremko 20th. Sydney placed second in the zone, merely seconds behind first place! Provincials will take place in Edmonton at Rundle Park on October 21, 2017.

The Vermilion Marauders football team defeated the Jasper Glaciers 20 -14 in Jasper. This was only the Marauders’ second game playing 6 man football and their first win. Last weekend they played at home against Cape Breton.

November is coming quick and with that comes our Annual Grade 9 Leadership Supper and Secondary Awards on Friday, November 3rd. Tickets have been handed out to grade nine students to sell as well as placed at the UFA and Co-op so grab yours now!

Once a month, our kindergarten class will be travelling to the Mannville Care Center to perform songs, poems or act out stories. This is a wonderful experience for both the kinderkids as well as the residents of the Health Center, and our local seniors with the SMILE club.

On October 11, elementary students were delighted with another visit from our favorite storyteller, Mary Ann Lippiatt. This is our fourth year we have had the pleasure of hearing Mary Ann’s oral

storytelling. This year her repertoire included a First Nations story about a sparrow finding rain, an Inuit story about a greedy hunter, a story from India, and a string story. The students participated in the stories by adding sound effects and movement, and they loved the unique instruments that were used throughout.

It was a great afternoon in the library!

Everyone enjoyed seeing our local Co-op staff when they came to help cook us breakfast as a kick-off for the Bags for Breakfast program. Genocide Survivor - Emmanuel Twagirimana

Emmanuel Twagirimana shared his story of surviving Rwandan genocide and a gospel message at the Glad Tidings Pentecostal Church on October 12, with his wife, Isabelle translating.

Twagirimana was a businessman in Kigali, Rwanda who sold Italian suits at wholesale prices. After work, he volunteered by feeding and preaching at hospitals in the area.

During the political unrest in 1994, a grenade fell in his house causing shrapnel to enter his left arm and left leg.

“There is so much joy for us to be alive at this time. What a person sews, that’s what he reaps,” said Twagirimana.

The hospital that he was taken to wanted to cut off his arm and leg, but his limbs were spared. Because the hospital was near the barracks in the middle of a war zone, it was evacuated.

According to Twagirimana, he could not find family to help him evacuate, he had lost all of his friends, and all of his belongings were stolen. A man had come to take him to a more peaceful hospital, but that one was full, so he was placed in a nearby school that doctors and nurses only visited every few days.

“My injuries were rotting with pus and maggots, and my stomach had burst. When the sounds of shooting entered the classrooms, many people ran, but I was too weak. We remained w i t h o u t fo o d , wate r, a n d m e d i c a tion; there was great suffering,” said Twagirimana.

Twa g i r i m a n a s a i d t h at s o m e o f the patients had crawled to a nearby garbage bin with food that had been

lef t behind from refugees, but that he was still too weak. According to Twagirimana, a time came when he lost the sensation of pain, his vision blurred making one person appear like two people, or spinning, and that his body began shutting down.

I closed my eyes and felt like I was being lifted. It was pleasant; like an elevator or an airplane,” said Twagirimana as he began to describe a spiritual journey that took place.

Tw a g i r i m a n a ex p l a i n e d t h a t h e was not buried because there was no one around who could, but had been wrapped in sheets.

“The stench of rotting bodies was normal with so many around,” said Twagirimana.

When his spirit returned to his body, the building shook, he sat up and proceeded to remove maggots from his mouth and nostril. According to Twagirimana, other patients and soldiers were beyond startled and informed him that he had been dead for seven days.

Twagirimana went on to say, during the time that he was dead, he travelled to both Heaven and hell, met with Jesus, and was sent back to earth to preach the gospel.

Having recovered from an almost detached broken arm his fingers have lost life completely, and his arm and leg took nearly five year s to heal.

Shamrock Performance Horses

Submitted S h a m r o c k Pe r f o r m a n c e h o r s e s owned and o perated by Tyler and Helen Nowosad of Dewberry, Alberta, not only showed this year’s ABRA 1D champion horse, they also trained the DR Nick Bar Granddaughter “Raise The Gold Bar” aka Alley.

The dynamic duo of Alley and Helen made lasting impressions right from their first competition together in 2015, bringing home the Bohnet ’s Barrel B ar n Futur it y Bu c k le. With a ver y successful 2015 season behind them, Alley needed a break as she suffered a wire cut that took her out of the 2016 racing season. Fully healed and well conditioned the team set their sights high for 2017. Long miles on the road did not deter, placing them at the top all spring and summer. August found them at the Alberta Barrel Racing Association Finals in Ponoka, Alberta. After multiple days and consistent runs they secured the 1D champion spot, and the championship saddle.

Every success has a back-story and Helen and Tyler’s is one of hard work and determined nature. The quiet, humble couple, live with their two children Jaden (11) and Rowdey (7), three dogs and numerous other barnyard animals just south of the Chuckwagon Capital of Canada. They bought the ranch in November of 2007 and had since upgraded the property to be safe and functional for their broodmares and young stock.

With mutual interest and involvement in College Rodeo and roping, Tyler and Helen found each other. Shortly after College Tyler, a welder by trade focused his energy on taking care of his young family. Competition wouldn’t stay away long though. The young couple strived through pedigree to

find top performance horses. The first being, a DR Nick Bar mare, the horse that Helen developed her outstanding ability as a Barrel Racer on. After much success with the DR Nick Bar line, and collecting four own daughters by the legendary stallion, this would be the start of their elite bred broodmare band. This includes Alley’s sensational Dam “Sweet Fleet Bar.” The DR Nick Bar horses, have proved over and over not only the bloodlines athletic ability but also superior mind.

The couple knew right from the start how important a solid proven foundation would be. Not only did the mares have to prove themselves, but the foals had to perform as well. That thought process led to the Nowosad’s obtaining their double-bred Peppy San badger st allion “ BSF Nor ther n B oon” aka Vegas (Peptos Quick Pick x El Northern Dance).

This nex t key purc hase, Veg as, started as a smooth moving yearling, who caught Tyler’s eye at an Auction sale. Tyler had planned to sit on his hands that day, but couldn’t resist a bid.

In 2014 the Nowosad’s started crossing Vegas with their DR Nick Bar daughters, and in no time fell in love with the cross. Vegas now is the primary stallion used at Shamrock Performance Horses.

The young stallion and Tyler shared their own success story this spring, w h e n “ S R Ve g a s G o t L u c k y ” a k a Marley, was sold to 2016 World Champion Header Levi Simpson. Marley, the first son of Vegas’, found his niche in Team Roping instead of barrel Racing.

This allowed Tyler to campaign his skills as a Roper and trainer.

Versatility in the performance world can be a hard to achieve. Combining dominant Race blood, with outcross

working cow horse lines, generates an opportunity for the Nowosad’s to utilize all of their abilities. This is very evident in the horses that they are now performing on. This foundation of strong genetics in pedigree will remain stable for years to come.

Jaden and Rowdey are also an integral part of the system. They expose and challenge the young horses to adhere to the “younger generations” t a s k s . Fu r t h e r d e m o n s t r at i n g t h e quality of mind produced through the outcross genetics.

With winter fast approaching the Nowosad’s are gearing up for 2018.

Fully dedicated, ever y one of them contributes their time, effort and dollars to ensure the success of the program.

Helen is currently taking the steps necessary to get Alley on the track to RFD TV’s American Rodeo Richest One Day Rodeo in the World, hosted in Texas February 2018.

The Canadian Barrel Horse Incentive Breeders Sale October 7, 2017, in Ponoka, Alberta, was a strong start to the new season. Where they had a yearling filly “Sweet Northern Nick” entered with her Super Stakes Certificate selling as the reserve highest bid.

This filly is eligible for the added incentive money if run at the CHBI Thanksgiving race in the future. This was the first available yearling horse to be sold out of the program.

That was not the end of the success at the 2017 Thanksgiving weekend.

“Alley” held up her end of the bargain

as well. With the fastest times on day 1 and 2 of the CBHI Derby, Helen and Alley had the long wait of being the last run in the Short Go. Excitement coursed through the arena as the dynamic duo “peeled paint ” on three exceptional barrels, not only to win but to set an arena record at Calnash Center, with a 16.824 sec run. Hard work pays off but does not start or end in the arena.

The Nowosad family will be busy introducing their exciting young prospects to the training program. Their training program involves many aspects including gentle star ts; to develop balance and minds, extensive exposure to kids, dogs and other animals; with consistent training by all four members. One training tip they take very seriously is giving their horses praise. By developing a strong horse/rider bond through praise, the Nowosad’s are able to establish a willing confident partner.

Helen credits mentor NFR qualifier Lee Ann Rust for elevating her confidence and refining the mechanics of the training program. Lee Ann’s insightful instruction has greatly influenced Helen’s guidance of her daughter Jaden.

Tyler and Helen are very excited for the future of their program. As well as watching Jaden and Rowdey make an impression on the rodeo world. The Shamrock may be a symbol of luck, but it’s the dedication of this exceptional family that brings success to Shamrock Performance Horses.

Tigers Try To Stay Hot

The Tigers entered last weekend (Oct. 6 and 7) with a split after their opening weekend of action as they e n t e r e d t h e 2 017- 2 018 N E A J B H L season.

It was another busy weekend as the boys packed the bus and made the trek on Friday, Oct 6 to Onion Lake.

Both teams exchanged ten shots a piece in the opening frame and went into the second scoreless. The second period was dominated by the Tigers as they jumped all over the Border Chiefs scoring three goals.

Netminder Dakota Kenyon stymied the Chiefs all night en route to a 5 -1 Tigers win. Scoring for the Tigers were Ryan VanGenderen and Jesse Reeds with two goals apiece and Evan Bardoel with a lone marker. The game was interrupted in the second frame with a line brawl featuring Hayden Protsch, Maguire Blair, Darren Frankiw and Austin Trach.

Saturday, Oct 7 brought the home opener as the St. Paul Canadiens faced off against the yellow and black.

Maguire Blair, Darren Frankiw, and Austin Trach all sat out Saturday as VERMILION JR. B TIGERS VS VEGREVILLE part of their involvement in the previous evening’s fracas. More discipline for those players may follow depending on the league’s railing. Backstop Dakota Kenyon now leads the league with three wins, a 1.33 goals against average and a .946 save percentage.

October 16-21, 2017 is school bus safety week. In rural communities the school bus is one of the main modes of student transportation. The school bus cannot transport students safely without a dedicated school bus driver behind the wheel and a bus contractor that makes sure the bus is maintained. Through muddy spring roads, wintery blizzards, dark days and sunshiny mornings, the bus driver shows up to take children to school so they can learn and then brings them safely home again. Bus drivers have the tough job of being the enforcers of the rules, the peacemakers when friends become foes, and are always there when someone needs a tear wiped or a band-aid applied. We have the privilege of working with great bus drivers every single day, sometimes they know exactly what they have to do to fix the issues on their bus and sometimes they need a helping hand, but I haven’t met one yet that wasn’t willing to do whatever they had to do to make sure they keep “their kids” safe. Bus drivers are extensions of our schools, our communities and our families. As parents we can support our bus drivers by explaining to our children that the rules of the bus will help keep them safe. As the motoring public we can stop when we see a school bus with its red lights flashing so we don’t endanger the lives of children while they are getting on and off the school bus. REDS FLASHING...NO PASSING! Please show your gratitude for the important service our bus drivers and contractors provide by saying thank you this school bus safety week.

J. R. Robson High School Cross Country Running Athletes Qualify For Provincials

Sydney Crowe, Sam Ree and Bray Crowe qualify for Alberta Provincial Cross Country Running Championship Finals in Edmonton at Rundle Park, October 21.

A small but competitive group of cross country runners travelled to Muriel Lake, southeast of Bonnyville, on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 to compete in the North Eastern Alberta Cross Country Finals.

It was a cool day and a few snowflakes could be seen at times, but temperatures were ideal for the competitors as they ran through the trails. One hundred and seventy nine competitors from 33 schools competed in the North East Zone finals with athletes coming from as far away as Fort MacMurray. The courses were challenging with some very technical areas especially at the start of the race.

The JR Robson athletes were relaxed and focused, hoping to garner a spot at the upcoming Provincial Championships in Edmonton. The top 18 finishers from

each age group have an opportunity to race against the best in the province in the upcoming 2017 ASAA Cross Country Provincial Championships. It was evident that every one of the Marauders put everything they had into their performance and that their commitment to their training paid off. There were a lot of very fast runners in the competition and the JR Robson athletes demonstrated that they belonged in the mix. Coaches Bates, Felt, Ree, Scully and Innes are extremely proud of how well they performed and are especially pleased with how the kids supported each other, had fun, and realized their potential.

Results Sydney Crowe (Intermediate Girls 4.5 km - 21 competitors) placed 2nd with a very fast silver medal run with a time of 21:37:49. She was only 10 seconds behind the first place runner from Bonneyville. She moved up from a 5th place finish last year.

He was 19 seconds ahead of the second place runner.

Bray Crowe (Junior Boy 4.5 km - 47 competitors) placed 9th with a very competitive time of 18:43:43.

Dylan Eremko (Junior Boy 4.5 km 47 competitors) placed 21st with a very respectable time of 20:12:30.

With only 4 athletes competing, J. R. Robson was still able to capture third place overall in the 2A School team point competition.
