Mannville Fire Department’s Pancake Breakfast

Liam McKinnon enjoyed the Mannville Fire Department’s Pancake Breakfast on October 7.

Approximately 120 people attended the Pancake Breakfast at the Mannville Fire Department on October 7.

Hosted for over 25 years, the breakfast continues to raise funds for Muscular Dystrophy. Created by a past Fire Chief for a community member with the disorder, the crew continues to support the same cause and create fire prevention awareness.

Overall, the community enjoyed the opportunity to get together and support the Fire Department.

“The Mannville Fire Department is community based, and we have seen a lot of dedication with several officers working over 30 years,” said Fire Chief Dez Shubert.

Shubert noted the importance of sharing fire prevention information.

“When it comes to emergencies or fire, the time frame on how quickly they can escalate is very little, so from a fire department perspective, it is important for people to understand the risk,” said Shubert.

This week is Fire Prevention week, take a moment to thank a Firefighter.

Vermilion Folk Club To Host Steve Poltz

Canadian singer-songwriter and guitarist Steve Poltz will be performing for the Vermilion Folk Club at the Vermilion Legion on October 21, at 8 p.m.

A founding member of the indierock band ‘The Rugburns,’ Poltz is best known for his collaboration with singer ‘Jewel’; and notably the single, “You Were Meant for Me,” which reached number two in the United States. He is also recognized for his role guest-starring as a Canadian country singer named Peeve Stoltz in the web series ‘Up the Creek,’ and for his song, “Everything About You,” which appears on the ‘Notting Hill’ movie soundtrack.

Poltz holds a political science degree and has even written songs about politics, though his work maintains an easy listening

feel throughout its range of topics.

According to Wikipedia, his songs have been noted for their simple melodies and satirical lyrics.

Poltz will be fresh off a tour in England, Scotland, and Ireland when he arrives in Vermilion; and will continue performing into the New Year in Eastern Canada and largely in the United States.

“I know these are crazy times on this wild planet we call Earth. Folks are divided and arguing and threatening war. But I’m here to tell you that people still love to join together with strangers and sing their hearts out,” said Poltz in a recent online post.

Vermilion’s All Candidates Forum

Approximately 200 people gathered at Lakeland College’s Alumni Hall in Vermilion on October 4, for the Vermilion Chamber of Commerce’s All Candidates Forum.

Shawn Jacula volunteered to moderate the forum, and Bonnie Walsh kept time.

Vying for the municipal election positions, candidates were each given two minutes to expand on their political platform. Candidates for councillor and mayor positions were asked two predetermined questions followed by a set of audience questions, and a closing statement if desired.

When asked what the councillor nominees’ visions for Vermilion were, Greg Barr said, “To bring down residential taxes and create jobs for people to come to.”

Rob Pulyk commented, “I’d like to see a prosperous and safe community for everyone.”

When asked what Vermilion’s weakest link and greatest assets are, Richard Yaceyko noted the park and trail system, and said, “People are the strength; their volunteering and community spirit is awesome.”

Erwin Warkentin said, “Vermilion’s small business owners are its greatest asset.”

“People in Vermilion are willing to contribute time and energy to make the smallest difference in someone else’s life,” said Justin Thompson.

“All rural communities struggle to keep up with big box stores, but Vermilion has enough uniqueness to keep us going forward. The people and sense of community are strengths with everyone helping each other,” said Tannis Henderson.

Once the councillor candidates had finished their question period, Mayoral

candidates delivered their platforms and took turns anwering questions. Kirby Whitlock plans to initiate a business association to offer members of the community a voice.

“I’m always ready to listen to people, am wanting to put the best interest of the community forward to make Vermilion stonger, and keep the community at heart,” said Whitlock.

When asked what leadership means to them, current Mayor, Bruce MacDuff said, “A leader is the one that coordinates, chairs, and helps the group come to a good decision for the town.”

When asked about their vision for Vermilion, Caroline McAuley said, “I’d like to see a thriving, vibrant community.”

Andrew Grech The family of Andrew Grech of Mannville, Alberta announce with sorrow his passing at 91 years of age, on Thursday, September 28, 2017 at the Vermilion Health Care Centre.

Andrew is lovingly remembered by his children - Edward Grech of Edmonton, Jenny Songhurst of Airdrie, Jim (Betty) Grech of Mannville, Teresa (Daryl) Gutfriend of Calgary; grandchildren - Jamie (Kelly) Wilson, Jeremy and Marcus Gutfriend, Calum Grech; great grandchildren - Ryker and Hayz Wilson, as well as by numerous extended family and friends.

Andrew will live on in his family’s memory as Pop, Andy, Grandpa and Big Papa. His ninety-one years of life cannot be easily summarized in a few words.

Andrew immigrated to Canada when he was 1½ years old but he always said that his life really began when he met Kathleen (Kay) Way while she was teaching at the Scotstown School. Andrew would ride his horse over just to spend time with her. They were married on July 26, 1952 and had four children together: Edward, Jenny, Jim and Teresa.

Andrew and Kay worked tirelessly on the farm south of Mannville, but managed to set aside wonderful family time.

Andrew was an active 4-H leader with the Mannville 4-H Beef Club and he and Kay hosted many annual 4-H field days on the farm featuring Kay’s famous homemade donuts. Together they built a purebred herd of cattle, grew, cleaned and sold seed grain as well as bulls across the Prairies. Andrew had a talent for standing on the hilltop to call his herd from all corners of the pasture. The running cows and calves would be a spectacular site. Andrew was very proud of receiving the Farm Family Award in 1984 but he always said it was his family that was the true prize.

After losing his beloved Kay in 2011 Andrew continued working on the family farm with son Jim and daughter-in-law Betty. It was Jim's love and care that facilitated Andrew staying on the farm and enjoying new ventures such as raising lambs and looking after his much loved chickens. Of late, he was teased as being “The Chicken Whisperer” for his flock of laying hens, which successfully resulted in trading free range eggs for goodies. Andrew’s gentle nature was not just for his family but also for every animal in his care. Certain animals would be given a name and thrived from his extra attention.

Those who were lucky enough to have him in their lives admired all that he accomplished and the hardships he overcame. He touched so many in his lifetime with his love for family and friends.

As per Andrew’s wishes a family memorial will be held in the spring when the crocuses bloom. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Andrew’s name to the Friends of Vermilion Health Care Centre, 5720 – 50 Avenue, Vermilion, Alberta T9X 1K7. This week is Fire Prevention week and the theme this year is “Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!” While fire alarms are an essential part of a fire escape plan, it is not a substitute for your fire prevention plans, always discuss fire prevention strategies and escape routes with all members of your family. Fire Prevention Week is not only a week about prevention and fire safety it is also an excellent time to take the oppor tunit y to show how much we appreciate our firefighter members in our community and surrounding areas for helping keep us safe in one of the most traumatic times in our lives. They put their lives on the line for us every time they are called to attend a fire.

This past weekend was also Thanksgiving weekend, and I would like to say thank you to everyone in my life who supports me during the good times and the bad times. Life isn’t always a bed of roses, and it is

important to acknowledge the people in your life who help you through the hard times and don’t just stick around for the good times.

I also think it is important especially during harvest time to thank our agricultural community and all the hard work they do to put food on our tables.

I have learned over the years that farming isn’t just a job it is a way of life and sometimes that way of life is a lot harder than one may think. A good harvest is dependent on near perfect conditions and lets’ face it those conditions are out of their hands. Farming is a labour of love I think, and it certainly isn’t for everyone, I know I could never do it, the uncertainty would drive me around the bend.

The Race is on once again as the J.R. Robson Cross Country Team hits the trails for 2017 Season The J.R. Robson Cross Country Running Team has been hard at work over the last four weeks training in the Vermilion Provincial Park. Practices run four days a week, most often after school. There is also a group of athletes training on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings at 7 a.m.

Athletes have been challenged by a variety of weather conditions for training ranging from very warm to rainy, windy and cool.

Many of the athletes have demonstrated a lot of personal commitment to their training program this year. As a result they are achieving many personal bests and individual goals, both during training and at races.

The focus of the Junior High School students is on the Buffalo Trail Public School Championships while the Senior High students are hoping for an opportunity to qualify for and compete at the Alberta High School Provincial Championships. The coaches are very pleased with the commitment, sportsmanship, and discipline of our young athletes.

In true Marauder spirit they support their teammates before and after the races and they also make an effort to congratulate the athletes they are competing against.

The Innisfree-Minburn 4-H Beef Club held their organizational meeting Wednesday, October 4. We had a report on the year-end party, ball game and awards night that was held at the Innisfree Ball Diamonds.

This year we have one new member, Bradley, welcome to our club!

Kitscoty’s 100 Lilacs

Geese flew overhead, and visitors from as far as England attended as MLA Richard Starke planted the 100th lilac bush in Kitscoty’s Heritage Park on October 4.

According to John Scott, Parks and Recreation Committee Member, the area had once been a brown field zone and past sanitation disposal site that has been reclaimed as a green area for the community.

“Small communities either sink or swim and creating a sense of community and providing services are essential,” said Scott.

The project began to fulfill a past councillors dream of having walking trails encircling the community. Also, people can now walk, read historical plaques describing urban and rural community pioneers, and enjoy the seasonal aroma of 100 lilac vari-

eties. Kitscoty’s Heritage Park was officially opened in July, and the community plans to continue adding to it with washroom facilities and activity stations.

Scott’s favourite lilac in the collection is a Common Lilac that was collected from a cutting from the lilac given by an Onion Lake Mission member to North West Mounted Police sergeant of the barracks that were near Onion Lake from 1886 – 1920.

“These projects have provided a large benefit for children to be able to ride their bicycles safely on the paths, and provide people an opportunity to get away from traffic with early morning walks or afternoon picnics,” said community member, Shirley Scott.

Couples from Ontario and Red Deer had recently travelled to tour the park and discuss the history of the project, and sponsor one of the lilacs, Daniel Richardson

from England, appeared at the 100th planting. Other sponsor areas include Vermilion, Lloydminster, Cold Lake, Wainwright, Edmonton, and Calgary.

“The support is tremendous and brings a larger community together having ownership in the park,” said John Scott.

“We’re very down to earth people here.

We will give it that tender, loving care from year to year with the help of volunteers and town staff to make Kitscoty a stopping off and destination point through these and other projects besides park developments,” said John Scott.

“To have collected 100 species is a real statement of the amount of work done here and something you can be very proud of; to provide an area of sanctuary that is so beautiful and will be enjoyed by the community and visitors,” said MLA Richard Starke.

Kitscoty Beautification Projects

The Village of Kitscoty has been undergoing a 100 Lilacs Project from 2014-2017 and Centennial and Heritage Parks Project from 2010-2017.

2010 saw the start of the Kitscoty heritage parks and trails project, initiated by John Scott, after having seen an overhead photograph of the village with a green line around the municipality. The park was a vision of a former councillor who foresaw a walking trail that would encompass the entire village.

The village council of the day adopted the proposal I placed before them and thus started this journey.

A federal grant provided the impetuous kick-start to the project, and an energetic fundraising drive and a contribution from the village helped with the required matching. That first year saw approximately one mile of trail constructed in what would be named Centennial Park, with park benches, picnic tables and flower boxes

strategically placed to enhance the functionality of the space.

2014 saw the development of the heritage park, located on lands formerly used as a landfill, since reclaimed but unusable for residential development. The park contained about a quarter of a mile of trail, constructed from recycled tire product, and became the location of the “100 Lilacs Project”. I had learned, through family connections, that there were at least one hundred different varieties of lilacs and that stirred within me an idea that held the possibility for Kitscoty to be recognized as a place to visit. Thus started my quest to find where these different Lilacs were located and how I might be able to obtain them for the collection. I started at the local Kathy’s Greenhouse, and they were able to get us started off with 40 lilac plants. As the next years passed I was able to find additional varieties at nurseries in Strathmore, Red Deer, Cold Lake, Lloydminster and as far away as Dunster, B.C. in a private collection. Finally, this year, having located

The Vermilion Town Council Meeting on October 3, covered various committee reports and an Atco Electric presentation.

After a unanimous vote going forward, Peace Officer duties include moving violations; council opted to table the more discrepant issue of effective times of school zones.

The suggestion was made by Sergeant Behr that the current times should be changed to 30km per hour during the school year, on Monday – Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Council decided to find out more informationa and discuss

it at a later date instead of going to an immediate vote.

The Town of Vermilion had previously inquired about LED street lighting, and Atco presented council with a new multiplier option. The option would allow them the choice of purchasing green energy for some or all of the existing street lights in Vermilion, and council opted to evaluate the cost and keep in communication with Atco.

Council rejected the offer to lease the old recycling building at the airport because they felt with required building changes that it would be more cost effective to sell.

more varieties in Red Deer and Dunster, we are poised to plant lilac number 100, “Little Lady,” to end the quest, though not the search. By year’s end, we will have 106 different lilacs within Heritage Park.

Each and ever y one of the lilacs obtained to date has been sponsored by individuals from both near and far, such as: England, Calgary, Edmonton, Wainwright, Vermilion, Lloydminster and all parts of the Kitscoty community.

With the support of a provincial grant and sponsorship by the Kitscoty & District Community & Seniors Association, I was able to develop a series of over 40 historical plaques depicting a brief story of the lives of some of the community’s early settlers. These plaques have been placed along the trails in both of the parks, intended to add a measure of education to the recreation already in place.

In 2017, I was able to find a sponsor for

a collection of deciduous and coniferous trees, along with a collection of fruit-bearing trees and bushes. These were planted around the park to add to the ambiance of the area and to develop a shelter for future plantings.

To round off this year, the walking trails located in the Centennial and Heritage parks will be connected (again utilizing recycled tire product) providing a continuous trail of about one and a half miles.

Significant annual grants from the Alberta recycling board have made it possible for the village to continue development of the trail system.

As of this time, there is still lots to be done to complete that dream of years past, and only time will tell how successful we will be in finishing the project.

Hopefully, at some time in the future, I will have the opportunity to tell the rest of the story.

Learning To “Reap” What They Sow

Submitted On September 27, a group of Grade 5 and 6 students from Kitscoty Elementary School, worked to harvest produce from the school’s garden plot.

The plot is part of a project headed

by Laura Waterfield, owner of F’Laura n’ Company Greenhouse. Back in May, Laura partnered with Miss Dixen’s grade 5 class to teach the student’s how to grow their own food. The students took an active role in planning, planting, and caring for the garden. Throughout the summer, parent and teacher volunteers helped to maintain the site.

Kerri A. Sinclair lead her first yoga class at Lakeland College encouraging her class to leave stress at the door. After practicing yoga for the past eight years, Sinclair received her teaching certificate last year and is a new face to the Be Fit For Life program. Sinclair is bringing a new perspective to the yoga classes.

Every October during breast cancer awareness month, women are reminded to get checked for breast cancer. That’s because breast cancer is still a problem in Alberta and the most common type of cancer for women. In fact, 1 out of every 8 women will be diagnosed in her lifetime. And each day a woman in Alberta will die from the disease. But breast cancer doesn’t have to be a death sentence. If we can catch it early, we can treat it and beat it.

Screening mammograms are a way to do just that. Using special x-rays of the breast that check for signs, they can help find breast cancer 2-3 years before it can be felt by a woman or her doctor. Mammograms are the best test we have for breast cancer, and the only test that has been shown to lower the chance of dying by 30 per cent. Thanks in part to screening mammograms, most women (almost 90 per cent) are now surviving breast cancer.

Should you get a mammogram? Women 50 to 74 should plan to have a mammogram once every 2 years, and can selfrefer. Women in their 40’s can speak to their doctor, and get a referral for their first screening mammogram.

Screening mammograms are available at many clinics in Alberta. To find the closest screening mammography centre near you, call Health Link at 811 or Screening Programs at 1-866-727-3926.

Screen Test is a service that brings free screening mammograms to rural communities with two mobile clinics. To find out when the next clinic is in your area, call 1-800-667-0604 (toll free).

What else can you do to prevent breast cancer? You can talk to your doctor about your family history of breast cancer and know your risk. Know how your breasts normally look and feel, and get them checked if you find anything unusual. And of course a healthy lifestyle is important. Limiting alcohol, smoking and drinking can also help lower your risk.

Prevention is the best protection. A screening mammogram can save your life. Get a screening mammogram in October.

Submitted On September 29, 11 suppor tive housing residents from the Vermilion Valley Lodge had dinner with Henry & Lillian DeJong at their farm near Clandonald, AB. Shorter fall days and the dust of the combines in distant fields brings back many a memory of meals in the field to the residents. The combine operators and residents sat together, enjoying a home cooked meal in the field and discussed how farming has changed from the good old days.

“I can remember setting the food out, and the men would stop the combines long enough to get a meal in them and then get back to it,” said resident, Beatrice Kenzie.

Back in the 1950’s & 60’s farm wives created their meals in small kitchens with little to no plumbing, older appliances, sometimes a wood stove, but they got the meals ready and to the field on time.

Residents at the Valley Lodge now have their meals in the dining room, but the thoughts of harvests suppers long past still bring a smile to their face.

“The folks in the kitchen here cook our meals in a space a bit bigger than my kitchen at home- it’s so small,” said

To feed the 120 residents of the Lodge three meals a day, four staff members work in a space smaller than 300 sq. ft doing prep, cooking and the clean up after.

“Our commercial Kitchen is only a bit bigger than the kitchens most of our residents used back in the day to create harvest meals to take to the field,” said Sheri Heller, CAO of the Vermilion & District Housing Foundation.

Built during the 1960’s, the kitchen is less than top of the line. Heller said, “There was another upgrade done in 20 05 to accommodate the need of 40 more residents, including stainless steel countertops, top of the line fridges and stoves. It was and improvement, but never adequate.”

Fast for ward to 2017, the kitchen is outdated, the staff are working in smaller areas to prepare more, and there haven’t been any upgrades to the space.

“The new kitchen and Dining room will be phenomenal – more prep area for our staff and modern appliances are just a few of the upgrades. The staff work magic in the small space creating the residents’ meals, but it will be nice to have them made in a larger,

more modern kitchen.” Said Heller The Vermilion & District Housing Foundation (VDHF) is addressing this issue through their modernization project of the Vermilion Valley Lodge. The Vermilion Valley Lodge is critical infrastructure for the community by provid-

ing seniors with safe, affordable, and comfortable housing for those who can no longer manage in their own homes.

Besides the modernizing of 50 resident rooms, the project will include a larger commercial kitchen and dining room, and other spaces to increase s t af f e f f i c i e n c y a n d c o m fo r t . T h e modernized infrastructure is essential for providing seniors housing that follows current standards.

Through the anticipated Living Well Capital Campaign, VDHA hopes to fundraise $1.5 million of the $14.1 Million. For more information please see vdhf.ca.

The Grade 1 s tu d e nt s h ad s o much fun exploring the Provincial Park on September 27. They raked leaves to jump into, did a nature scavenger hunt, looked for various leaves for their science and art projects next week, and went on a nature walk with Wildlife Conservation Officer Mr. Gary Walsh. Mother Nature cooperated and they enjoyed learning in her beauty.

VES celebrated Orange Shirt Day a day early - on September 29. We gathered at 9:00 to form a sharing circle and listened while Mrs. McLaughlin provided us information about why we wear an orange shirt and how every child matters.

Mrs. McLaughlin also talked about the significance of being kind to one another, not just on September 29, but for the entire school year.

Mr. Beecroft’s 4C class took time away from their busy Social curriculum to learn about the Battle of Passchendaele which happened in 1917. They then wrote a thank you message to a Veteran on supplied postcards, as a part of Postcards For Peace. They sent them to Veterans in 20 different Long Term Care Facilities in Alberta. The students enjoyed learning about Passchendaele and the Postcards for Peace program.

We had our monthly assembly on October 4. Mrs. Tomkins informed us that we are already up to 2037.5 points collectively. We thank the members of the Vermilion Credit Union, including Fat Cat, for their generous $2712 donation to the Accelerated Reading Program. Mrs. Moses reminded us of our October virtue – compassion. The grade 5 students did a great job presenting two versions of goal setting, using a poem and a rap to get their information to the student body.

On October 4, the Co-op kicked off their new campaign, “Bags For Breakfast”, by hosting a pancake breakfast for staff and students. We thank them for their generosity. For every shopping bag anyone reuses at our local Cornerstone Co-op, three cents is donated to all of the local school breakfast programs. Last year in the St. Paul and Elk Point area, 1.35 million bags were diverted from the landfill and over $40,000 was donated to the School District from the Bags for Breakfast program. We hope to do the same in our area, so please recycle your

bags at the Co-op and help us keep our breakfast program going.

The Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA) has supported a provincial travelling exhibition program since 1981. The mandate of the AFA Travelling Exhibition Program is to provide every Albertan with the opportunity to enjoy visual art exhibitions in their community. Their growing art collection consists of over 8000 artworks showcasing the creative talents of more than 2000 artists. From October 4 to November 1, this Travelling Art Exhibition will be in VES. It will be showcasing the Kleskun Hills, which is a geological sightseeing and historical destination located east of Grande Prairie and the site of the northern occurrence of a badlands landscape.

Please stop by VES and take in this awesome experience.

VES will be selling Baba Jenny’s perogies again this year from October 3-13.

This fund raiser helps to cut the costs of field trips throughout the year. The pickup date is October 24 from 3:305:00. We truly appreciate your support.

Please join us for the school council AGM on October 16 at 7:00pm in the VES Library. This month’s agenda will include nominations for council positions, a maker space demonstration, and board and administrators’ reports.

We are in need of anew Treasurer and Co-Chair (these positions are a small time commitment, but can make a big impact at your child’s school). Child care will be provided in the gym. All parents

As Napoleon Hill quoted, “Strength and growth come only through continuous effort and struggle.” It was not without dedication or team effort that led to multiple chances for our students to endeavor to excel. Over the past few weeks, these students’ perseverance paid off and their accomplishments shone through.

Junior girls’ volleyball team have been doing very well in their league this year.

September saw them come away with wins against Paradise Valley and Innisfree. The girls are extremely excited to be part of a league and encourage the community to come out and watch them play.

The junior boys’ volleyball team won the Gold medal in Kitscoty on Saturday September 30th. They defeated Innisfree in the final game two sets to one. Well done

Senior Girls’ hosted their own volleyball tournament September 30 weekend. Not only did they host an awesome tournament, with six teams on the roster but they also took home the title of “B” side winners. Way to make Dewberry proud, girls!

The Cross Country team’s efforts paid off at the annual Autumn Invitational in Vermilion on September 30. The runners had to battle some pretty challenging hills along the course but all members successfully completed the race, most even crossing the finish line in the top 10 of their category. The following students received top ten spots: Presley Parr (3rd), Rhett Romanchuk (3rd), August Bensmiller (1st), Brenton Romanchuk (7th), and Savana Deibert (5th). What a fantastic way for the elementary students to complete their cross country season.

Fantastic efforts, team!! Junior and Senior High both have one more race to go!!

While some efforts have been on the playing field others occurred in the classroom.

CTF 7/8 Wildlife class had the opportunity to learn about birds, from the knowledge-

able and dynamic, Chris Olsen (Lakeland College). This fueled an excitement with the students and they began working on a birdhouse project. They initially made demo models out of paper and will use these as their blueprints to create the real thing. Vern Nolin has offered his carpentry skills to aide the students with cutting out their birdhouses. Once this is completed they will begin to assemble them. We can’t wait to see the finished projects!!

The Grad Class of 2018 will be canvassing the area over the next few weeks to fundraise with the sale of the Community Calendar. All proceeds made go towards

the cost of their graduation. If you wish to purchase a calendar or an advertisement spot, please contact one of the following grade 12 students.

Mannville School encourages everyone to reuse their current plastic bags or use any recyclable bags when shopping! For every shopping bag you reuse at your local Cornerstone Co-op, three cents is donated to the school division breakfast programs.

To kick-off the Bags for Breakfast program, Co-op will be hosting a Pancake breakfast on October 11th, for all Mannville School Students. Bags for Breakfast is a proud part

of Co-op’s overall commitment to social, environmental and community sustainability.

The elementary games club with Mrs. Riedel was a huge success on Monday.

Twenty four students from grades three to six came to play some games. The students learned how to play the card game, Speed.

The next Games Club will be on October 16th and we can’t wait to keep on playing!

Clay for Kids will be coming to our school from October 24-26th to work with our Kindergarten to grade 9 students to create various curriculum based clay projects. This is an exciting experience for our students and we cannot wait to see their finished projects in a couple of weeks!

Students, staf f, p ar e nt s, fa m i l y a n d community members gathered together to celebrate the St. Jerome’s Annual Awards Night on Friday, October 6. The evening celebrated the achievements and accomplishments of last year’s high school students. We are so proud of each student who attends St. Jerome’s and this evening is a time to honour some of him or her. Masters of Ceremonies, Ashley Corbiere and Breanne Maughan, did an excellent job keeping the evening running smoothly. Congratulation to all the students who achieved Honour Roll distinction for their grades. Awards were presented to the highest academic mark in each subject area from grade 9-12 as well as Most Improved and Work Ethic Awards for each grade. Leadership Awards were the last awards to be presented. Ethan Campbell and Karley Dieken were the winners of the CWL Christian Ethic Award, Tenille Chase was the recipient of the Keith Martin Award, and Erica Snelgrove and Gabriel Quickstad received the Community Closet Scholarship. Anna Ulrich received both the Governor General’s Bronze Medal and the Spirit of St. Jerome’s Award. Congratulations to all this evening’s winners. A huge thank you to all the businesses and organizations that continually support this evening, without your financial support this evening would not be possible. Thank you to the amazing group who put in hours to make this evening possible; Tina Zayac, Terry Fraser, Lisa Sader, Shelly Corbiere, Molly Schumacher, and Denise Campbell.

St. Jerome’s School News

St. Jerome students spent the day learning defensive driving skills, how to react to last minute hazards and the consequences of driving while impaired or distracted. Over three hours were spent on pulling new Mustangs out of spins, learning how to avoid hazards without over steering or braking and driving courses wearing impairment vision goggles. Instruction was by professional drivers, and members of the Edmonton Police Service carried out real life roadside impairment tests. It was a great day, with passionate people sharing important information in an exciting way.

Thanks to Ford Canada and Webb’s Ford Vermilion for the opportunity to participate.

St. Jerome’s class of 2018 is already busy fundraising for their graduation ceremonies that will take place in May. See any of our grade 12 Spartans to purchase some delicious Mom’s Pantry products by November 23. The products will arrive in time for Christmas.

Join us for cowpie cookies; guess the loot, poster draws, and much more fun at our annual Fall Book Fair! Yee Haw! St Jerome’s Book Fair will be running October 11, 12, 13 and 16 at lunch recess (12:05-12:30) in the library. The Family Night Event will run October 12 from 3:30-7 with raffles, poster draws and the family night draw for $25 worth of books for the student and $25 worth of books for the winning students classroom. We will also have cowpie cookies for snacks.

Sierra King participated in the Encounters with Canada; Medicine and Health Week in Ottawa during the last week of September. We hoped you had a wonderful experience gaining lots of knowledge and experience.

During the month of October, the High School Student Council will be collection new socks, to be given to the Lloydminster Interval Home. Socks can be dropped off at the school office and students can gain points for their house as there are boxes for each house Cartier, Fraser and Mackenzie to place the socks in at the office.

Congratulations to all of the eight volleyball teams who represented St. Jerome’s during the last weekend of September.

The Girls Grade 6/7 team won Gold in Vegreville, while the Grade 9 Girls won Gold at their home tournament. The Boys Grade 6/7 team brought home Silver from the Vegreville Tournament and the Grade 8/9 Boys won Gold in Kitscoty. All teams will have a break over the Thanksgiving weekend but will all be busy the October

The community of St. Jerome’s and parishioners of the Holy Name of Jesus Parish gathered to celebrate the first school mass on Friday, September 29.

Thank you to the Student Council for participating in the mass as readers, choir members, and gift bearers. Father Roger shared how we will always have to make choices between good and evil and that God has provided us help and protection from the angels and the Holy Spirit.

Elementary students continue to participate in swimming instruction at Vermilion Lakeland College. Grade 1 McDermott, 3 Martin, and 4 Roth are taking lessons at the present. Grade 1 Ryan and 2/3 Svenungard will have their lessons in November.

Submitted The Tigers opened their 2017 - 2018 hockey season on the road September 30 and October 1 with a pair of road games in Vegreville on Friday and Cold Lake on Saturday. The Tigers were looking to get a good start to the season in the hopes for a return to the postseason.

September 30 tilt against the Rangers was penalty packed as both teams amassed a total of 232 penalty minutes which was highlighted by a feature bout. Levi Myshak who started between the pipes for Vermilion faced an onslaught of 53 shots. The jungle cats managed to drill 56 shots the Rangers way, unfortunately the bounces went to Vegreville on way to 7 - 4 loss.

Saturday brought a renewed optimism for the boys as they loaded the bus and made the trek to Cold Lake. This was a fired up group from the night before and they made their point from the drop of the puck.

Net minder Dakota Kenyon kept the Ice at bay all night registering his first win and shutout of the early campaign. Turning away all 40 shots directed his way. The Tigers got scoring support again from Evan Bardoel for the second consecutive game. Foster Steinhubel buried one and Austin Trach who opened the scoring in the first frame ended up with the game winner.

The Tigers returned to action this October 6 they were in Onion Lake for a date with the Border Chiefs and opened their regular season at home October 7 as they Jesse Reeds intercepted a pass near the end of the Tiger’s first home game of the season welcomed the St. Paul Canadiens. on October 7.
