Schools Celebrate Terry Fox

Area schools rallied to support cancer research by hosting Terry Fox Runs throughout the week.

St. Jerome’s School hosted one on September 26, where students had the option of donating toonies or filling pledge sheets. In addition, the Student Council wanted to offer something different and hosted a Colour Run for High School students.

“Getting colourful was fun because we got to support a great cause; the Terry Fox Foundation,” said Grade 8 student, Anna Willis.

“It’s important to help fight cancer especially when you have friends or family members who have passed or are fighting cancer,” said Grade 8 student, Gracie Sweeney.

Teacher, Allan MacMillan said, “They did a bang up job of organizing it, and competed for their different school houses.

It was a beautiful day where we got outside and got some exercise, supported a good cause, and had fun doing it.”

The Mannville School held their 15th Terry Fox Run on September 27. Students gathered to watch a short video; and staff pointed out that in Terry’s name, Canadians have raised $750 million for Cancer research.

“All you’ve got to do is take another step and keep on going,” said Terry Fox in the video. Community members joined in the run including a couple of infants, and afterward students enjoyed homemade muffins and water.

Vermilion Elementary School hosted their run on September 28, and J.R. Robson will be hosting theirs on October 2.

Cornerstone Co-op - Bags For Breakfast

Cornerstone Co-op hosted a pancake breakfast at St. Jerome’s School in Vermilion on September 26, as part of their Bags for Breakfast Program.

The program ran in the St. Paul and Elk Point areas raising $40,000 for area schools and this year it was expanded to include Wainwright, Vermilion, Mannville, and Dewberry.

“We’re hoping for more, so we want to encourage people to reuse their cloth or plastic bags (even from other stores).

Each time they do, three cents will be donated to the breakfast program,” said

community engagement coordinator, Heather MacMillan.

Principal Allan Chase added he is very excited at the prospect that they may have a consistent source of funding for their existing breakfast program.

“There are many studies showing that students who are nourished and satisfied when they come to school are more able to accomplish what they are capable of, and when they are little, it is timesed exponentially,” said Principal Allan Chase.

MacDuff currently volunteeres with the Vermilion Rotar y Club and has volunteered in the past with the Kinsmen Club, Vermilion Minor Hockey, Vermilion Minor Soccer, Vermilion Agricultural Society, and the Lakeland College Business School Advisory Council.

As the current Vermilion Mayor, MacDuff has acted as the secretarytreasurer for the Alberta HUB Committee, the board director of the 911 Call Centre, the chair of the Physician Recruitment and Retention Committee, and is the chair of the Vermilion and District Housing Authority.

A c c o r d i n g t o M a c D u f f, h e h a s enjoyed being part of a council that has developed a stronger relationship with Lakeland College, the County of Vermilion River and the Vermilion Agricultural Society. As well as built a new town shop, introduced the curbside recycling and future composting program, kept property taxes as low as possible, and developed the Highway 16-41 commercial subdivision.

Going forward, if re-elected, MacDuff plans to strengthen partnerships with community groups and businesses, develop the Brennan North subdivi-

sion, explore new and innovative ways to bring in business and the fibre optics broadband to Vermilion. He also wants to complete the waste water facility, and provide a new Protective Services building to house police, fire, and ambulance.

“The infrastructure for water and sewer under our current plans should be completed by 2019 if everything continues at current rates. The key on council is that we are a team. We are trying to move the town forward with the help of administration acting as a team, the Agricultural Society, Lakeland College, and all of the advisory boards,” said MacDuff.

MacDuff is encouraging anyone who wants to find out more to attend the Forum at Lakeland College’s Alumni Theatre on October 4, with doors open at 6:30 p.m. He also noted that there will be an advanced vote on October 11, at the Town Hall from 2 – 8 p.m.

“Please come out and vote; let’s get 50 per cent of the eligible voters out voting,” said MacDuff.

The election will take place on October 16, at the Elk’s hall, from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m., and there will be an institutional vote at Vermilion Valley Lodge for facility residents only from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Councillor Barr has worked on the Transportation and Utilities Committee, the Transportation and Protection Services Committee, the Vermilion River Regional Waste Management Committee, the Vermilion Public Library Board, the Northern Lights Library System Board, the Airport Committee, and as an alternate for the Vermilion and District Housing Foundation Committee.

“This year through the Transportation Committee, we established an Airport Committee to look into the viability of attracting other businesses to Vermilion.

With the new Waste Management System, we have moved to more environmentally friendly ways of disposing of our recyclables and in doing so have reduced the cost of recyclables by over half. We also plan to launch an organics recycling program to further reduce our impact on landfills.

Town Council also plans to continue infrastructure investment to not leave Vermilion in a infrastructure deficit,” said Barr.

According to Barr, being a councillor is rewarding because they all have a vested interest in enabling a good foundation to allow businesses to thrive and draw in families and to see the town grow.

“On a personal level, we want to see the kind of growth that only happens when you step outside of your boundaries. It is important not to let mistakes stop you from trying. If you don’t succeed one way; try another. I still feel I have alot to offer,” said Barr.

Barr went on to say that one of the things he appreciates most about Vermilion is the sense of close community spirit seen at events like the Canada Day Celebration or the Annual Fair put on by the Vermilion Agricultural Society. “ Vermilion’s volunteers are what

make it special by stepping in to action to continue the things that are worth preserving,” said Barr.

The Mannville Branch of the Vermilion Credit Union donated $5,000 to the Mannville School on September 27, to help upgrade their hot lunch kitchen.

Rania Pitre, had submitted an application for a contest through the Credit Union af filiate, Cuets Financial, as part of the Helping Hands Campaign which was made available to all Credit Unions in Canada. According to Pitre, the country was divided into six

regions with each branch encouraged to submit for any charity or non-profit group that needed financial help, with each region being awarded $5,000.

“We ended up winning our region.

I have never been someone who fo ll owe d p o li t i c s; mostly because I always felt my voice didn’t matter, and my vote didn’t count. I had the idea in my head that my vote was only one of many and that it wouldn’t make a difference either way, but it does. I have realized my vote could be the one that determines who will become our Mayor and council members. My vote may

Dear Editor Further to my previous letter, I feel I need to continue the dialogue about the SHORT SIGHTEDNESS of many municipal governing council members and the employees of such councils both urban and rural.

I had a firsthand experience with one of the town employees that is in a managerial position. It concerns our existing problem on the town cement sidewalk. Every winter when there is a warm spell, water from both melting snow or rain collects on about 4 segments of the sidewalk resulting in an ICE PAD. We live on one of the major routes to J.R. Robson school. Of course, Len and I have done our best to put salt on the ice to try to either remove the ice or at least roughen up the surface so that the school kids or anyone else would not fall and injure themselves severely.

About eight years ago, I contacted the mayor at the time to tell him of the ice problem. I asked him to please come and meet with me so we could come up with a plan to fix it. Unfortunately, he was a NO SHOW. I phoned several more times about the problem, and I got the same song and dance.

I always thought it was more of a status in the community rather than a really important job, but I have discovered that is not the case at all.

So we come to NOW. The current head of Engineering and Public Works came to survey the ice issue with me which was most welcome. After a fair bit of discussion about the obvious need for some remedy to be done and that it is on a direct school route, he not only dismayed me but also angered me by saying that there are probably another hundred of these same sidewalk issues in town that should also be addressed. Wow, that remark was meant to SHUT ME UP and make me go back into my house with my tail clinging to my abdomen.

He didn’t shut me up. I reminded him as politely as possible that we LIVE on a major school route. All people using the town sidewalk that fronts our property need to also be considered for their safety as well. So I am coming to this conclusion. The mayor and town council do not think that it is prudent or important to repair existing areas that are problematic to the taxpaying members of Vermilion. Does town council think that only the new properties or the big property owners deserve the required response to

Vermilionites, do you think this is fair, that the town council should carry out the municipal mandate with an under-handed policy of ‘simply pay up and shut up?’

Oh! I’m sure that all individuals that now are vying for an elected spot on council would vehemently deny that any issues requiring diligent repairs would at any time be ignored or simply put off saying there is no money to fix the problem.

Our incumbent Mayor has referred to the importance of the past transparency in all of councils work and efforts. I question that claim to be true? In these last years, the council does not have the council meeting minutes published. Years ago, the minutes were always published in the Vermilion Standard. At least then, the community were informed of what the council were doing. Today’s newspapers may need to be paid to have the council minutes published because that would definitely endorse that

on voting to attend the forum, listen and ask questions and make your decision based on information you acquire, not on what you hear buzzing around town. Basing your decision on the biased comments you may hear is certainly not the way to make such an important decision.

There is no question that town council needs to continue working on new economic endorsements for Vermilion, on keeping up with new technological advances as well as working co-operatively with all organizations of the community- both urban and rural.

However, all Councilors and the Mayor need to always remember that individual problems and concerns should always be addressed with respect and with a definite willingness to fix the issue/problem.

All of us living in Vermilion should try to help our community by not being afraid or reluctant to CONTACT any council member in regard to all matters that concern the town premises and your personal issues.

None of us should ever refrain from phoning or asking to see any member of council to address the important problems big and small. So please exercise your right to vote.

This year we still have much of the crops left on the field, hoping for hot drying winds. On the farm harvest and thanksgiving often go hand in hand, and it is a favoured time to get together with family and friends. Aside from the great meal with people your care about; the joys of Thanksgiving Day are won by doing the mental work of being thankful. When I eat my thanksgiving turkey, potatoes, bread or butter, may I be thankful for the farmers that do the work so we can all eat and to God who gives the farmers the rain and sunshine for the crops to grow, and my daily breath of life. I am thankful to wake up in the morning as each day is a gift. I am thankful to have something to do and to be able to do it. I am grateful for kind people in life, as they are truly the cake and the icing. I know I can even be grateful for the difficult people, as they show me who I do not what to be and challenge me to bite my tongue, which is sometimes hard for me and develop patience.

Scientific research shows that the more we focus on what we are grateful for, the happier, healthier and more o p t i m i s t i c w e b e c o m e. R e s e a r c h studies found that heart patients that scored the highest on gratitude had better quality sleep, less inflammation and sunnier moods. Thanksgiving thoughts are best served every day. As proverb “a happy heart is as good as medicine” goes, being thankful makes us happy, and being happy helps us be healthy.

I always look forward to the enjoying the traditional foods of thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving Feast

The menu is pretty standard year after year all across the prairies: turkey, cranberr y sauce, potatoes, grav y, stuffing, fresh carrots from the garden (or other veggies) salad and maybe some wine. The dessert of choice, of course, is pumpkin pie, with whipped cream. Pumpkin is high in many nutrients, antioxidants and vitamins, especially vitamin A, so feel free to enjoy a nice slice, guilt free. I know I need to add the gravy recipe, but I always make it by feel, so the next time I will try and measure and take note of the amounts for any new cooks doing their first big feast.

Turkey T h e tur key c an b e roa ste d w it h the breast up or down. If you put the breast down the turkey breast meat will be moist, it will unfortunately not have that golden browned recipe book perfect look. To have a nicely browned turkey, then roast with the breast up and uncover during the last hour of cooking to brown the turkey. Cook an unthawed and unstuffed turkey for 20 minutes per pound at 325 degrees, or until juices run clear and an internal temperature of 170 degree F. Reserve the juices for the gravy. I always like to add a little poultry seasoning, with the salt and pepper to the gravy for an amazing flavour. Don’t forget that the bones will make a great broth for home made turkey soup.

Turkey Stuffing Cut up one loaf of bread, (whole g r a i n) i n t o c u b e s , a d d 2 m e d i u m chopped onions, toss with 1/3 cup light olive oil, 1/2 cup melted butter, salt, pepper and poultry seasoning to taste. Yes, you have to taste it to get it right, before you pop the stuffing into the oven, Cook in 2 loaf pans, covered loosely with tin foil in the oven during

the last 30-40 minutes of roasting the turkey. It is currently recommended to not cook the stuffing in the turkey.

Roasting the turkey without the stuffing inside is considered a safer cooking method to help ensure the optimal internal cooking temperature of the turkey.

Cranberry Sauce In a saucepan combine 2 1/2 cups frozen or fresh cranberries, 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup maple syrup or sugar. Cook on low heat, occasionally stirring, breaking up some of the berries when cooked with the back of the spoon. Remove from heat when thicken and slightly reduced. Ser ve warm or cold. This can also be used as a jam on toast. It’s very healthy and tasty. You can also add in one or two chopped oranges at the beginning for

Pumpkin Pie 2 pre-made pie crusts 4 large eggs 1 large can of pure pumpkin 796 ml 1 can of evaporated milk 1 1/4 cup white sugar 1 Tablespoon cinnamon 1 1/2 teaspoon ginger 1/4 teaspoon cloves 1/8 teaspoon allspice In a large bowl whisk the eggs, then add the rest of the ingredients, stir until well blended, pour the mixture into two 9” pastry or graham wafer pie shells.

Bake at 425 degrees for 15 minutes then at 350 degrees for 30 – 40 minutes. The pie is done when a knife inser ted into the middle comes out clean. Cool and serve with whipped cream or ice cream.

Clint McCullough has served on council for the Town of Vermilion for ten years and submitted his nomination to rerun on September 18.

M c Cullough volunteer s with the Vermilion Soccer Association, high school volleyball, and the Vermilion Fire Department.

“I love being able to help enable future development for this community,” said McCullough of his involvement with Town Council.

McCullough brings experience as a market development officer for Lakeland College’s Emergency Training Centre; a career built on increasing business to the largest employer in the community.

“I have been on the ACE Water Board that brought great water to Vermilion as well as the Planning and Development

Committee that has changed the face of Vermilion by opening new lands on which to build commercial, industrial, and residential properties.

I grew up living in a trailer until I was 12 years old, so bringing a new park to Pilkieville and the trailer park area really meant a lot to me,” said McCullough.

McCullough hopes to stay on the Parks, Recreation and Culture; Trans Canada Yellowhead Highway Association, Alberta Central East Water Corporation, and most of all the Planning and Development Committee.

According to McCullough, town council really needs to encourage new businesses to Vermilion which will include people looking to buy the new (and a few old) lots, plus keep local contractors busy.

As the Planning and Development Chair, McCullough really wanted to see the North Brennan Subdivision through to the initial startup, and is currently working to help encourage new businesses in Vermilion.

Vermilion RCMP Submitted

In the month of August 2017, Vermilion RCMP responded to 260 calls for service. Of those, 79 are traffic related, 47 are property crimes, 21 are false alarms, 17 are persons crimes, 12 are domestic related, seven are animal complaints, two are related to mental health concerns and 75 are other calls for service.

During this time, 30 criminal code charges and 11 provincial (tickets) charges were laid.

Files of note: Vermilion RCMP received a complaint of an erratic driver on Highway 16.

Members located the vehicle which then turned off onto a Range Road and the occupants fled on foot. The vehicle was determined to be stolen. Members, including from Vermilion and Kitscoty Detachment, were able to locate the two occupants of the vehicle running away through a nearby field. A male and female, both youths who cannot be identified, were arrested and charged in relation to this incident.

The Power Of Gratitude

As Thanksgiving approaches, we tend to draw our attention to the things, people, and opportunities that we may be particularly thankful for. Perhaps it’s your health, your children, a good harvest, or this wonderful community in which we live.

It is a lovely holiday that brings friends and family together to celebrate gratitude. Did you know that acknowledging and expressing gratitude has all kinds of mental health benefits? It does and it can affect you in all kinds of wonderful ways.

When we feel grateful our brains signal for a chemical release of dopamine, the feel good chemical. That gratitude and the resulting dopamine help us to feel more content, peaceful, and generous to others. It helps us to have a more positive state of mind and increases our overall sense of happiness. Gratitude has other benefits too. It can also improve our resilience, increase the quality of our relationships with others, and it contributes to better overall mental health. When we actually express that gratitude by sharing with others how they have positively impacted us, we can get an even more powerful feeling of happiness for ourselves and for them. Isn’t that amazing? The more we practice gratitude, the more we see the world through a lens of gratitude. That means we are more likely to see and focus on the wonderful things in our life instead of dwelling on life’s challenges.

To maximize these mental health benefits, we encourage you to not only thank people for their help, support, or love, but to tell them exactly what you are thankful for and the impact that they are making in your life. Teach your children how to do the same by modelling gratitude. If you are not sure quite how to get started, consider keeping a gratitude journal where you can jot down a few things that you are grateful for each day. Some families might enjoy

keeping a gratitude jar in a central location in their home where members can deposit a quick note of gratitude each day.

Consider choosing a time each week to read the notes together. You may want to phone or visit someone to let them know how much you appreciate them. You could also write someone a quick note of gratitude each week or even each month and encourage your school age children to do the same (you may want to have young children to draw pictures of gratitude). Some people really enjoy adding gratitude breath to their daily meditation.

This is simply taking a few minutes each day to be still, focus on your breath, and then take a few minutes to think about a few of the wonderful things in your life that you appreciate. Others may want to include gratitude into daily prayer. There may be challenging times when it feels as though it is harder to think of things to be grateful for. Some days it may only be something as simple as a sunny day or a stranger holding a door open. It doesn’t have to be complicated or huge to have a positive impact on your mental health.

This thanksgiving, we encourage you to take time to reflect on what you are thankful for but we also hope that you will consider choosing to include gratitude into your life every day.

The Mental Health Capacity Building in Schools Initiative (MHCB) is an integrated, multidisciplinary team approach providing promotion, prevention and early intervention addiction, health and mental health services to children, families and communities. The VIBE Program is one of the 37 projects involved in this initiative led by Alberta Health Services Addiction and Mental Health in partnership with Alberta Education and funded by Alberta Health and Wellness. New Soup Kitchen

Have you ever been sitting eating alone and wished there was someone to share your meal with - someone to fellowship with? Recently members of the churches in the Vermilion Ministerial met to discuss this impor tant issue. Out of this meeting came the idea of organizing and running a Soup Kitchen on the First and Third Fridays of each month beginning this Friday, O c to b er 6. T h e S ou p K itc he n will be held in the Edge Building, 490649 Ave- next to Bowling Lanes from 11:30 to 1 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend, have a bowl of homemade soup, a drink, and to share together in chit-chat with others there. Mannville’s St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Closes

Pioneers who settled in the area formed the village of Mannville in 1906. Those who identified themselves as Lutheran Christians gathered for worship in the homes of individuals. They decided to form a congregation and to build a church residence in order to provide housing for a pastor and to have ample worship space.

In 1929 this project was initiated, and so the congregation was soon able to worship their Lord and Savior in their own building. But even remote areas in Alberta were affected by WW II. While St. Paul’s pastor Theodore Folkmann supported the Canadian war efforts against Germany with reference to Romans 13:1, anti-German resentments were felt. In June of 1941, so-called “patriots” torched the church where Rev.

Folkmann resided, burning it to the ground.

The Anglican Church community recognized the need and offered worship space in their building to the Lutherans for the time being. It was not until 1953 when the current building was dedicated.

The Public School in Birch Creek had closed and was purchased by St. Paul’s.

The school was dismantled and the lumber re-used. The new St. Paul’s Lutheran Church was completed with many hours of hard volunteer work.

In the summer of 2017, the congregation met and decided that it was in the best interest of everybody still active to close the church doors permanently. This was a difficult, but necessary decision.

St. Paul’s has been served by many faithful pastors who have travelled long distance (Vegreville, Vermilion) to serve the

members with the Preaching of God’s Word and the Administration of the Sacraments.

We name those who served in the building: John Nielsen (1954-1957), Rudolph Nast (1958-1962), Herbert Heinemann

(1966-1979), Terry Richardson (1981-1985), William Pantzer (1987-1993), Peter Pakrul (1993-1997), Mark Sander (1998-2009), Reinhard Dittmer (2010-2011), Gregory Palmer (2012-2016).

Their assumptive worldview changes, the perception of life changes, priorities change and often relationships change, too. Innocence is

impacted and confidence and the ability to cope with daily activities change.

“The way you define yourself and the way Society defines you has changed” When the person you had a relationship with is taken away, the par t of you that remains is changed. Roles may have changed, and you may have new tasks or jobs to do and adjust to.

Perhaps some of these tasks and roles

were your loved ones. These can be triggers or reminders of the loss and the deep pain. When you experience this change, it can be emotionally, physically and spiritually draining. This exhaustion further compounds your feeling of depression.

Finding your new self-identity is not an immediate happening and is a painful but necessary time. Seeking support and help from others is not a sign of your weakness or that you are bad or inferior. Accept the help of others you feel safe with. Talking and sharing is an

important part of the healing journey.

Find a counsellor or a support group that you feel comfortable with. Try not to make too many changes in your life or environment as the work of your new identity depletes your energy to cope with life on a daily basis. Reach out to others sharing your thoughts and feelings and your new identity. Most of all, please, be kind to yourself.

The struggle you face is comparable to the struggle of a Butterfly as it fights to emerges from the cocoon as a new creature.

Richard Yaceyko Reruns For Council

Having served on council for 13 years, Richard Yaceyko submitted his nomination to rerun on September 18.

Raised in Derwent, Yaceyko has been a Vermilion resident for 33 years.

“I love that Vermilion has a real sense of community spirit. I find people friendly, with time to talk on the street. People here are committed to volunteering. It’s a community where you want to raise your children,” said Yaceyko who raised his four children in Vermilion. I wouldn’t have had it any other way,” said Yaceyko.

During his time on council, Yaceyko has enjoyed being a part of the planning for the Regional Centre, attaining commercial land along Hiway 16, bringing in regional water, and addressing doctor shortages.

“People were leaving for doctors and subsequently business outside the community,” said Yaceyko.

As the chair of the Transportation and Utilities Committee, Yaceyko appreciates the town employees who work to keep Vermilion ahead of other municipalities.

For example by slowly replacing water and sewer infrastructure underground, and implementing the snow removal program which enables people to move around easier.

“As for the town’s approach to developing properties, I have had to change my outlook over time, and have seen that developments such as the ones next to the Provincial Park and South Brennan have been positive for the community,” said Yaceyko.

Moving forward, Yaceyko wants to

continue developing positive relationships with other community groups, and help to balance priorities doing what is best for the community.

By continuing to work with the Vermilion District Housing Foundation Board, Yaceyko hopes to provide Vermilion seniors the option to stay in the community.

“For a lot of people, there is a certain quality of life here. Vermilion is home for me; it’s a community I want to help prosper and have others call it their home. If people have the facilities they will want to retire here; I want to retire here,” said Yaceyko.

According to Yaceyko, making sure the new sewer treatment plant is established is a priority in order to allow space for growth in Vermilion.

“We need to grow, but at a rate that is sustainable,” said Yaceyko.

Lions International 100th Birthday Party And Convention

Vermilion’s Lion’s Club member, Don Good and Marion Smyth, attended the Lions International 100th Birthday Party and Convention, held in Chicago from June 30 to July 5, 2017.

T h e L i o n s c l u b wa s fo u n d e d i n Chicago, in 1917, by Melvin Jones, and now has 1.5 million members from all over the world in 210 countries. The Motto is ‘Where there is a need there is a Lion!’

There was a lot to do and see, the ‘Beachboys’ band opened the convention and entertained many. The bands ‘Chicago’, ‘Charlie Daniels’, and ‘The Blues Brothers’, entertained as well and there were many dancing to the bands.

There were seminar s on vision, diabetes, peace poster contests, guide dogs, and Lionism in general. The

convention was attended by people from all over the world, with a grand total of more than 35,000 registrants, from 117 countries. Chicago’s own McCormick Place at over 2 million 600 thousand square feet, capably accommodated the convention delegates and functions.

On July 1, the Canadians proudly walked in the very colourful and interesting parade along with all of the countries, down the very well known streets in Chicago banishing their flags with pride! Don ver y proudly carried the Alberta flag high in the air for all to see!

It was hot and a good time was had by all!

The Glad Tidings Pentecostal Assembly and Parkview Alliance Church are facilitating and supporting the MATT (Mothers and Tiny Tots) group in Vermilion.

The MATT group is replacing the previous MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) group and acts to recharge mothers through fellowship, companionship, and activity or rest time for mothers, with babysitting available.

The MATT mission statement is, “It is our common purpose to celebrate motherhood to the fullest and to bring together women who will love each other like family. Raising tiny tots is a beautiful, but hard journey. Robert Pulyk Reruns For Council

Robert Pulyk has been on Town Council in Vermilion since 2010 and submitted his nomination to rerun on September 18.

Pulyk has been a Vermilion resident for 19 years with his wife Lorraine and their six children. His degree in Agriculture, major in Dairy Processing - University of Guelph along with completing the Management Development Program for the Public Service - University of Alberta School of Business along with his experience having been the Northeast Senior Manager for Alberta Agriculture contributes to his role on council.

Over the years Pulyk has had terms as the Grand Knight for the Knights of Colum-

bus, coached U10 – U16 soccer for the Vermilion Soccer Association, supported St. Jerome’s School and Soccer tournaments as a volunteer cook, and volunteered on the Economic Development Board for the Town of Vermilion.

“Being on Town Council has been great; it has allowed me the opportunity to use my management/people skills within council and in all of the committees I am involved. The best part is working with all of the committee community volunteers I am involved with especially at their community events,” said Pulyk.

need for structured and non - structured activities, and to make Alberta Works more accessible to Vermilion residents.

Vermilion does not currently have any senior level four care available. Consequently, this has caused family members to be separated from each other being sent to other communities that have the health care service they need. Pulyk will advocate for a needs assessment analysis to bring this issue to a head with Alberta Health.

As for recreation, short-term maintenance is okay, but long-term planning is required to address future recreational needs by working with all of the community groups and residents using the recreational master plan as a starting point.

“We are the only community in the province that had its Alberta Works doors close in the morning since 2013,” said Pulyk.

According to Pulyk, unemployment has increased in Vermilion since 2013, and he feels that residents deserve access to Alberta Works provincial programs during normal government working hours.

“Our residents requiring their services in the morning should not have to travel to Wainwright or Lloydminster. I will work with council to bring this concern to the Provincial Government to ensure that this issue is resolved quickly,” said Pulyk.

Pulyk is looking forward to becoming more active on council since his recent retirement, and seeking greater community engagement and regional collaboration.

“It is very rewarding when you know that you have had a small part in the whole process. I take great pride in representing the Town of Vermilion, and am thankful also to my family for the support of allowing me to do so,” said Pulyk.

Lakeland College Named 2017 NKBA College Of The Year

The National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) today recognized Lakeland College as the 2017 NKBA College of the Year for its interior design technology program.

“We’re thrilled to receive this honour from the National Kitchen & Bath Association.

This accolade validates the quality program and education we deliver to our students.

We give them the necessary tools to excel in the industry. Congratulations to everyone who is involved in the success of this program,” says Dave King, dean of Lakeland’s School of Trades and Technology.

This is the first time Lakeland has received the award. Lakeland earned a combined score of 98 out of 100 on the two student designs the program submitted.

Lakeland’s NKBA accredited program was also one of 13 programs from across North America recognized with a 2017 Excellence in Education award.

“It’s exciting for us to be at the top. We’ve won Excellence in Education awards before – this is our fifth - but we’ve never been the top school, so it’s gratifying for our program, faculty and students,” says instructor Fiona McLeod, Lakeland’s NKBA program coordinator.

The accolades don’t stop there. Five

Lakeland students won awards in the 2016/2017 Student Design Competition sponsored by Waypoint Living Spaces, marking 14 consecutive years of student award winners.

Hailey Kaspick placed second for her bathroom design and received a $1,500 scholarship.

Brooklyn Gogowich placed third for her bathroom design and received a $1,000 scholarship. Erica Eftodie and Natasha Chaykowski received honourable mentions for their bathroom designs, as did Megan Gerling for her kitchen design.

The students were asked to design a kitchen and bathroom for a senior couple that had the all-inclusive approach to agingin-place. The competition attracted over 200 entries from 26 colleges and universities from across North America.

Mandy Davediuk, a second-year student, says everyone involved in Lakeland’s program is committed to doing excellent work.

“The instructors and the students put in so much work and effort, and it’s clearly showing with these results. The students who come here want to work and learn, and the instructors are so dedicated and helpful.

It’s just an excellent program,” says Davediuk.

“It’s so exciting that Lakeland is the top (NKBA) school. This small program in Vermilion is producing amazing results,” she says.

Davediuk and her classmates will work hard to extend Lakeland’s success in design competitions to 15 years. “I want to continue the streak and show Lakeland off and how great a program they have here.”

The winners will attend the NKBA Design Competition awards event in January 2018 in Orlando, Florida during the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show. This prominent industry event will also recognize the

NKBA professional designers who created the best kitchens and baths of the past year.

Interior design technology is a two-year diploma program based at Lakeland’s Vermilion campus in eastern Alberta. The program provides graduates with a solid foundation in design fundamentals, drafting, space planning and more so they can create functional spaces.

Graduates of the program can transfer their credits towards a bachelor of interior design (BID) degree at RCC Institute of Technology.

Eagle Builders Gift $100,000 To Lakeland’s Awards Program

(Vermilion, Alta.) – Inspired by how Lakeland College shapes its students to become theleaders of today, Eagle Builders gifted $100,000 to the college’s awards program during the official opening of the Dairy Learning Centre on Aug. 22.

“Eagle Builders’ generous donation of $100,000 helps us put our students in the lead andexcel as leaders in the dairy industry. Lakeland appreciates Eagle Builders’ commitment toour students’ success,” says Alice Wainwright-Stewart, president and CEO of Lakeland College.

The money will be placed in an endowment fund from which an annual $4,000 scholarship will be drawn. The scholarship will be awarded to the general manager of the dairy unit of the Student-Managed Farm−Powered by New Holland.

“As I became more familiar with Lakeland I found out how their agricultural programs are a major contributor to the success of the agriculture industry in Alberta. They shape leaders of today utilizing the student-managed farm concept,” says Craig Haan, director of sales at Eagle Builders.

Eagle Builders was the lead contractor for the construction of the 46,600 sq. ft. Agricultural learning centre. They poured 2.5 million pounds of precast into 264 precast panels in their shop in Blackfalds, Alta. On March 15 they broke ground, within six days, they installed the precast panels, and within 18 days the shell of the building was complete. The company finished construction on Aug. 15.

Haan, who’s one of three owners of Eagle Builders, says the company was proud to havebeen selected to build the state-of-the-art facility.

“When the partners and I discussed how we could give back to the industry that has supported us so well, we thought a scholarship would be a good way to go. Our goal is to support our future progressive dairy farmers. We feel this gift will help continue to drive young men and women to success in the dairy sector across Canada for generations to come,” says Haan.

The Dairy Learning Centre features state-of-the-art technology in robotic and conventional milking and feeding systems. With these systems, Lakeland animal science technology students will have the opportunity to delve into what it takes to lead in the dairy industry.

They’ll work with a herd of 280-head including 120 Holstein milk cows, replacement heifers and young stock.

Lakeland students will also lead in other career-relevant, advanced learning opportunities related to calf management, feed and nutrition, cow comfort, dairy specific software, manure management and more.

FOCUS’ 59th Annual General Meeting

Staff, individuals, board members, and community supporters gathered to celebrate their accomplishments in the past year and discuss what they had to look forward to in the future.

“It ’s pret t y significant that we’ve been in the community that long. For example, Jeanette Coutts has been a board member for 43 years,” said Shelly Chomlack, Chief Executive Officer.

The guest speaker was Courage Canada Trail Ride’s Curtis Anderson who has supported FOCUS for several years with part of the proceeds from the trail ride. According to Anderson,

it helps survivors to go on field trips or attend the ride the following year. Anderson has been speaking across Alberta and Saskatchewan and since July 12 and has raised brain injury awareness to approximately 13,000 people.

Anderson gave a ‘Road of Recovery’ speech detailing his experience since his bull riding accident on June 26, 2002. As a result, Anderson spent three weeks in a coma and had shunts put in his brain to control the swelling. He moved from the U of A hospital to the Glenrose Hospital where he received occupational therapy learning to walk, talk, and move his arm again. Within one year, he was able to walk without assistance, go up and down stairs and can now carry two-grain pails, has learned to talk over again, and can even play guitar.

“Cowboy up and keep keepin’ on.

Fight a good fight, and the best way to heal is from the inside out,” said Anderson, whose speech received a round of applause.

Board Chair, Mary Anne Machin said, “Congratulations to all of your hard work and dedication to the operation of this organization. You never gave up, and the reward, in the end, was the change that gave us the funds to continue to succeed in caring for the individuals you serve.”

“I can proudly state that we have simply surpassed last year’s expectations within all program areas, and we had some fun in the process. Planning for our future, FOCUS continues to look ahead at expansion within the Disability Services we provide, through our Seniors program and towards our Daycare Dreams,” said CEO Shelly Chomlack.

Along with teammates Sam Ree, Clay Bryden, Ty B r yd e n , a n d El i C r o w e, t h e s e runners could go the distance and run laps around us! Last week they were in Vermilion Provincial Park to host and compete in the Autumn Challenge.

“We had a good weekend in Bonnyville,” said Coach Campbell of his senior boys volleyball team. On September 22, they played five teams in the round robin and ended up first in our pool, then played Father Merc from For t McMurray and beat them in the semifinal. In the final they played a competitive Elk Point team, trailed the first set

but managed a come from behind win, and then won the second set to win the tournament. On the same weekend the grade eight/nine boys team played a great tournament winning every set until the last, scoring them silver! “They played well and had a great time!” said Miss Reeve who attended as a parent.

The grade seven boys Volleyball team played in the Triple Ball tournament in St. Paul Friday, September 22. “The boys played very well, learned a lot about the game, and finished 3rd place in the tournament,” said Coach Atkinson.

Last weekend the senior boys and girls teams “were in St. Paul for a tournament.

The Vermilion Marauders football team defeated the Jasper Glaciers 20 -14 in Jasper. This was only the Marauders’ second game playing 6 man football, and their first win.

On Thursday, September 7, 2017, Russell Garnier formerly of Dewberry passed away peacefully at the Vermilion Health Centre at the age of 81 years. Russell is loved and remembered by his wife Marvia of Vermilion, Daughter Monique (Murray) Hart of Vermilion, Son Robin (Liz) Garnier & son Michael Goeseels of Lloydminster, Brother Gary Garnier of Elk Point, Special Aunt Marjorie Hansen of Vermilion plus his nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Edmond and Hilda Garnier as well as his sister-in-law Una Garnier.

A funeral service for Russell was held at the Dewberry Hall on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at 1:00. Interment followed at the Dewberry Cemetery.

Russell’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank Dr. Kerlis (family physician) and Dr. Salumu and Nursing Staff at the Vermilion Health Center for the excellent care he received as a patient and while in the hospital. Heartfelt thank yous to everyone who phoned, send flowers, brought food, and came for a visit. Thank you to Crossroads Funeral Chapel (Alva, Harry, Kim and Karen) for your assistance with funeral arrangements. Special thanks to his pallbearers: Warren, Maurice, Gus, Floyd, Murray, Herb and Bruce. Thank you is also extended to Buffalo Trail Public Schools for the loan of the chairs, Pastor Brian Stiles of the Dewberry Community Church for leading the service, Linda Krawchuk for reading the eulogy, Jean Bowman for playing the piano, Sharon Bates for assisting with the hall, the Dewberry Mennonite Choir for their beautiful music and Greenlawn Goodwill Ladies for the excellent lunch.

Vermilion Elementary School News Submitted

The Energy Education Mobile came to visit Grade 4 students last week. Using the onboard activities, students learned about the actions you can take to reduce electricity use in your home. They identified the various areas in a house where heat can be lost, and learned about energy resources such as natural gas, coal, propane, and oil.

For the last couple of weeks, in gym classes and at recesses, VES students have been running laps on the track in an effort (as a school) to reach the total number of kilometers Terry Fox ran from St. John’s to Thunder Bay. On Sept. 28, all students and staff walked around the school for VES’s annual Terry Fox Run. We would like to thank all those who donated to the Terry Fox Run. On October 5, all Buffalo Trail staff members will get together to celebrate the amazing individuals we work with everyday.

Staff are recognized for every five years that they are employed by BTPS. The following VES staff will receive recognition for their years of service this year: Mrs. Webb (5 years), Mr. Beecroft (15 years), Mrs. Fuller (15 years), Mrs. Bykowski (20 years), Mrs. Heinrich (20 years), Ms. Birch (25 years), Mr. Harvey (25 years), and Mrs. Murie (25 years). Congratulations to the aforementioned staff and to all the hard-working men and women who make VES such a terrific place to be each day.

During our October 4 staff meeting, all VES staff will take part in our annual V-TRA training.

The safety of our children is a top priority for all of us. We, at Buffalo Trail Public School, have been involved in intensive Level One Violence-Threat/Risk Assessment safety training processes. As a result of this training we3” have a planversion for responding wide to situations in which students may pose a

threat to themselves or others. As a school community, we will not accept “no response” to a serious threat. Our goal is to respond to all threats in a professional manner that provides for a healthy and caring learning environment. We will practice lockdown and evacuation procedures in our schools several times each year.

VIBE is one of the Mental Health Capacity Building sites that has received annualized funding from Alberta Health Services. VIBE works to promote positive mental health in children, youth, families, and individuals in the community who interact with children and youth. Mrs. Alana Pinkoski-Benoit, our VES VIBE Wellness Coach, will be at VES Monday through Thursday this year. She will spend most of her time with students during their health classes and recess time.

Accelerated Reading has started again for the year. All students in Grades 2-6 are encouraged to take part in this reading program. To the Vermilion Health Care Team – your expertise and empathy were extraordinary. No one can ever be prepared for the journey of a life’s end. You provided explanations of what to expect and why, gave latitude in our comings and goings, showed us how to care for Mom in between regular rounds, and provided family comfort when we had difficulty coping. Special thank you to Dr. StewartHunter – your collaborative approach to palliative care was our saving grace, the attention you gave Mom and the time you took with us to explain the dying process was invaluable.

St. Jerome’s hosted another successful Fall Supper with both settings being sold out. A tremendous thank you to Charlene Young, our kitchen coordinator, and Event Coordinators, Rolanda Beaudette and Paulette Moir. This fundraiser would not be possible without your dedication and organization of this event. We would also like to thank the parent, staff and student volunteers, all the families who donated food for the supper and the wonderful community of Vermilion who support our supper each year.

The St. Jerome community, dressed red, white and black, gathered in the gym on Tuesday afternoon for the annual “St. J Welcoming” event. Grade 4 students were welcomed into Cartier, Fraser or Mackenzie house after competing in a fun-filled obstacle course. New students in grade FIVE to eight had to keep their hands behind their backs as they ate donuts hanging by strings. Grade nine to twelve students who are new to St. J struggled to unknot frozen pieces of clothing as their welcoming challenge. The final event was the welcoming of all new staff members. Staff first answered trivia questions. For each question they answered incorrectly a Smartie was placed in a pile of whip cream. Staff then had to find all their Smarties keeping their hands behind their backs.

Kicking off the “Bags for Breakfast” program in Vermilion, Cornerstone Co-op

hosted a delicious pancake breakfast for all the staff and students at St. Jerome’s on Tuesday, September 26. The “Bags for Breakfast” is a program where three cents will be donated to the local schools’ breakfast programs for every shopping bag brought in to reuse at your local Cornerstone Co-op.

All students participated in the Terry Fox Run on Tuesday, September 26. There were four different routes designed to accommodate all students. Students grade 7-12 had the option of being doused in coloured chalk at various points along the route. Thank you to all the staff who helped supervise the routes, all the staff and students who participated and all the donations that came in.

Our Spartan Volleyball teams were very busy during the September 22/23 weekend. The Grade 6/7 Girls team won Bronze in St. Paul on Friday and then placed 4th at the St. Jerome’s tournament.

Congratulations to our Jr. B Boys team who brought home the Silver medal from St. Paul on Friday evening. The Jr. “A” Girls team won Gold on the Consolation side and the Jr. “A” Boys won Bronze in St. Paul on Saturday. The JV Girls team traveled to Paradise Valley winning the Consolation side of the tournament. The Sr. Boys and Girls played some very intense volleyball in Bonnyville where the girls lost out in the quarterfinals. Congratulations to all of our volleyball teams for their success.

The St. Jerome Elementary community gathered on Wednesday, September 27 to celebrate September Happigrams.

The celebration began with Fat Cat from the Credit Union surprising the students with a cheque for two thousand sixtyfour dollars. The money will be used to purchase books for our elementary reading program. Thanks Credit Union for your continued support of literacy learning for our students. The celebration continued with Mrs. Roth’s Grade Four students reciting a poem and singing, “I Am A C”. The Grade 3 class sang “One Way, Jesus”.

Congratulations to all of our September Happigram winners for beginning the year with hard work, a positive attitude, and improved reading and math skills.

On Thursday, September 28 we were very fortunate to have Calum Lykan a passionate and energetic Storyteller who has travelled extensively telling stories, meeting new tellers and learning new tales on his journeys visit our students. His love for entertaining was evident as he took every opportunity to connect his audiences to the wonderful worlds of myth, legend, folklore, fables, and historical stories from Scotland and Far Away Lands.

St; Jerome’s Awards Night will be held on Friday, October 6, at 7:30 pm in the school gymnasium. This is a wonderful evening to honour and celebrate the accomplishments of our High School students.

During the month of October, the High School Student Council will be collection new socks, to be given to the Lloydminster Interval Home. Please donate your socks to the school office.

As a final activity all the students were presented with a feather. On this feather they were to reflect on their hope for the future, how to honor residential school survivors or how to encourage reconciliation. It was residential school survivor, Phyllis Webstad’s dream for the conversation about the residential schools to happen annually. With the second year of recognition and the conversation continuing, the students at Dewberry School are “a new generation becoming more aware of the past.”

There are many ways to reveal one’s character: through actions, dialogue, physical appearance, idiosyncrasies, thoughts and reactions. The events of the past few weeks will be like ripples in a pond and the impressions made on the students will flow deep. As the year progresses it will strengthen their character and make them more aware of the impact of their actions in everything including sports.

Marauders Fall To Hinton In Edmonton

Failing to capitalize on a first and goal from the one late in the third quarter was the turning point for the Vermilion Marauders in a 26-24 loss to the Hinton Wolf Pack in Edmonton.

At that point in the game the Marauders were leading 24-20. Another touchdown, even without a convert, would have forced Hinton to score at least two touchdowns.

Instead the Marauders gave up the ball on a fumble.

That four-point lead did hold up until there was just 1:30 left on the clock. Hinton power back Tristan Bell, who was hard to contain the whole game, busted out of high tackles for a 92-yard scramble to pay dirt.

It was Bell’s second carry of the series.

His first took the ball away from the twoyard line where Hinton was second and 20 after Cameron Bartley’s sack. Bell plowed through for a 16-yard gain putting his team over four yards away from the first down.

The third down gamble turned into the winning points.

Although Bell scored all the Hinton touchdowns, he could have had more if the Marauder defence hadn’t found ways to shut him down forcing the Wolfpack offence, and Bell, to make continual adjustments.

Fatigue and injury were also factors in the game’s closing minutes. Already down a player after Braden Tyner broke a bone in his hand last week, the Marauders fielded just 10 players. Jonathan Pries was missing from the action for most of the second half. Many of the Marauders sat out three or more plays after a variety of on-field hurts. Late in the quarter, quarterback and defensive stalwart Vince Brosseau had to sit out 3 plays after being rocked by a bone-jarring tackle.

However, the team didn’t give up. “You dug as deep as you could, so don’t hang your heads,” head coach Lorne Maier told the Marauders just before the teams shook hands.

In the dying seconds of the game, kicker David Wilson attempted an 18-yard field goal. It was blocked, but picked up by an alert Wyatt Payne. Payne was stopped well short of first down yardage. The Wolfpack then took a knee to run out the 11 seconds left on the clock.

Hinton scored first and last in a game that was full of fumbles, recoveries, interceptions and long penalty marches.

The Wolfpack scored on their first possession less than four minutes into the game. They started on their own 50,

and were third and 20 when Bell plowed through tacklers for the first major. This was the only touchdown Hinton converted.

The Marauders answered immediately with their own major. Brosseau scrambled around the backfield before finding Pries for a 61-yard pass and run. Pries was well behind coverage and wasn’t touched on his sprint into the end zone. Wilson’s convert tied the score at 8.

The Marauders took the lead with 1:03 left in the quarter. After taking over on downs on their own 30, the Marauders’ march up the field to a TD was assisted by multiple penalty calls on the same play. Calls included offside, roughing the passer and a second unnecessary roughness flag. The penalties negated a Wolfpack interception. Instead of being on the Marauder 40, they found themselves on a goal-line stand.

After a slow-developing play from the shot-gun failed, Jahmari Lindsay scored on his second chance from the one.

Wilson added the 2-point kicked convert.

Hinton scored the only points of the second quarter when Bell finished a sevenplay drive with a one-yard touchdown. The Marauders prevented the convert attempt.

Pries scored his second touchdown when he returned the second half’s opening kickoff 85-yards. Wilson provided a crucial block to prevent a pursuing Hinton player from catching up with Pries. He then added the convert for a 24-14 lead.

The 10-point lead didn’t last three minutes as Bell sidestepped and slipped through tackles rambling 66 yards for his third TD. Again the Marauders stopped the convert attempt. They maintained the lead until Bell’s final touchdown.

Third-year veteran Brosseau said the game was “by far” the toughest game he’s played but says he’s satisfied with how the team is coming together offensively. “Our execution is way better. I’m excited the way the season is going.” Brosseau led all Marauders with 58 yards on the ground.

Securing tackles, especially finding a way to tackle low to stop backs like Bell will be one of the challenge the Marauders face when they host Breton on Oct 12.

Breton started the season with 3 wins and scored triple the points of their opposition.

St. Jerome’s Fall Supper Success

St. Jerome’s school held their annual fall supper on September 29 at the Vermilion Regional Center and was a huge success for the school as both the 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. were sold out.

“We fed 750 people. Seven hundred tickets sold make it officially sold out, but we sold about 730 tickets and had a few people come to the door as well. On top of that we sold roughly 30-40 leftover plates.” said St. Jerome’s principal Allan Chase.

Members of the public could be heard commenting on how wonderful the supper

items and desserts were.

“The truck has just arrived at my house here in Vermilion, and everything is everywhere so supper would have been takeout; I was invited to come to this beautiful fall supper, and I’m glad I was, it was very good,” said George Rogers, new CAO for the Town of Vermilion.

Chase commented that he enjoys seeing the seniors and families that come together for the event.”

students work the event. I think it makes us all feel good to see young people taking responsibilities like this on so successfully. They do such a wonderful job, and I couldn’t be more proud.”

Chase went on to say that the event was a great success and it is due to all the people who come together.

“It is an amazing day; our students complete a tremendous amount of work in setting up and decorating the hall, prepar-

ing and serving the food. We have parent and community volunteers that come to help, and I am very proud of all the St. Jerome staff that volunteer their time to help make it the huge success that it is.

The students, staff and school community really stepped up to make it run very smoothly,” said Chase.

Proceeds from the Fall supper will go towards the sports teams, student activities, and speakers.
