In a partnership with local 4-H, Cornerstone Co-op hosted Fuel Good Day in collaboration with all Western Canadian Co-op Gas Bars, and proceeds were raised from gas or diesel purchased in Wainwright, Vermilion and St. Paul Gas bars on September 19.

“The Community fueled up and came through for 4-H! 4-H Canada empowers young Canadians to become skilled, engaged, and responsible leaders who are passionate about making meaningful contributions to their community. The organization was chosen for its shared values with Cornerstone Co-op, and to celebrate 4-H’s 100 years in Alberta,” said Co-op Community Engagement Coordinator, Heather MacMillan.

According to MacMillan, many Co-op members are involved in 4-H throughout Cornerstone Co-op’s eight communities, and their 4-H Clubs will benefit from this fundraiser.

Cornerstone Co-op would like to thank their members for donating $3,350.30 to area 4-H clubs on Fuel Good Day, by contributing five cents per litre at Cornerstone Co-op Gas Bars.

With balloons throughout the store in Vermilion, staff thanked customers for their contributions.

“Our goal was to double our litre sales, and we are grateful to the community for their support. So many good things come out of 4-H, and in a farming community, it is a part of our culture here,” said Susie Georget, Vermilion’s Co-op Gas Bar Kaylee, a Pump Attendant at Wainwright’s Co-op Gas Bar helped the community support Manager.

New Candidate – Kirby For Mayor

Kirby Whitlock submitted his nomination for Mayor of the Town of Vermilion on September 18.

Whitlock has lived in Vermilion his whole life and his family has been here for over 60 years. He is a third generation business owner in Vermilion and an avid volunteer in various organizations within the community.

Whitlock is the Rotary membership chair, outbound youth exchange counselor, and youth Interact Club chair.

Whitlock is also a director for the Good Life Institute, the Museum Board, and the Lakeland Robotics Club as well as a mentor for the Biz Kids program.

Whitlock’s platform is, ‘Make Vermilion Stronger.’ As a supporter of the community, he believes the Mayor should have the best interests of the community at heart.

“We have to talk to our community and see what they think, and I think we need to get some fresh new ideas,” commented Whitlock.

Being a local business owner, one thing he would like to start is a business association.

“I want to get that going so that local businesses have a voice. Small businesses are what will keep the world alive,” said Whitlock.

Whitlock would like to be a mentor for new business members coming to Vermil-

ion and would also like to improve relationships with other community organizations.

“I am always ready to listen to people. It is the best way to find out what is happening. I’m going to talk with my heart and I am doing it for the people.

I hear a lot about the lack of good quality internet in this area and I understand the cost of upgrading our internet is expensive, however, by improving our internet system to broadband it can attract new opportunities. Sometimes you need to spend money to make money, but of course you have to do it responsibly,” said Whitlock.

When using social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, that suppor t requests for likes and followers, Sorochan urged listeners to reduce selfies in order to avoid narcissism because it can lead to anxiety or depression.

Sorochan pointed out that the definition of the word ‘friend’ is a person you like and enjoy being with, while the definition of the word ‘stalker’ is to follow, watch and bother constantly.

“Psychologists agree that people can only maintain or nurture a certain number of people,” said Sorochan.

Sorochan noted that although texting is a popular way to communicate, people are shortening everything. “ Even though technology has changed, the word communication hasn’t. Words are only seven per cent of effective communication. Texting allows us to miss out on voice tone, modulation, and body movements. We cannot expect or demand immediate responses from people,” said Sorochan.

According to Sorochan, instant grati-

fication causes people to miss out on delayed gratification. He also warned that some texting codes could cause risk y behaviour. He expressed the importance for parents to monitor their children online, as well as to not share too much information about their children online.

“One out of five teens has engaged in it, and 75 per cent admit that it can have severe consequences. Be informed, realistic, involved on the same sites as your children, available to your children, and proactive,” said Sorochan.

To be treated as a whole person and not as an object, he suggested not sharing pictures that you wouldn’t share with your parents or their coworkers, and to avoid anonymous social media apps at all costs.

“I’m glad people have confidence, but that is not the place,” said Sorochan.

According to Sorochan, the constant flow of information sourced by social media can create releases of dopamine equivalent to heroin; with people addicted even experiencing withdrawals when kept without it.

“Take control of social media and technology; don’t let it control you,” said Sorochan.

He also referen c e d vid eo g ame addiction and suggested making games a reward for solving problems in real life.

ing at your phone while driving, as well as the lack of emotional connections, social skills, and effective listening causing relationship problems and depression.

Sorochan also noted health probl e m s a s s o c i at e d w i t h t e c h n o l o g y including premature spinal degeneration, digital eye strain, and nearsightedness, as well as sleep deprivation.

mend no exposure to technology for 0 – 2-year-olds, one hour per day for 3 – 5-year-olds, and two hours per day for 6 – 18-year-olds. “ Live in the moment; a four-inch screen cannot capture a memory as vividly as the human brain. Only the real world can meet your emotional and social needs. For the sake of your emotional and psychological wellness needs, please balance your intake from the real and virtual worlds,” said Sorochan.

Communities In Bloom Wins Five Blooms Bronze

During the 2017 National/International Symposium in Ottawa-Gatineau on September 16th, 2017, the Town of Vermilion received a 5 Blooms - Bronze rating and a special mention for Community Bread Oven.

The Town of Vermilion participated in the Class of Champions (Medium) category along with Castlegar BC, Millet AB, and Trail BC. Over the summer, trained volunteer judges travelled to participating communities to evaluate the overall contributions of municipal council and departments; industry; businesses and the private sector – including volunteer efforts – in regards to the following criteria: Tidiness, Environmental Action, Heritage Conservation, Urban Forestry, Landscape and Floral Displays.

Following their evaluation, volunteer judges Evelyn Alemanni and Jim Baird wrote: “Vermilion is endowed with a fascinating history, enthusiastic community groups, a conference center, numerous recreational facilities, and a recently

completed streetscape beautification project. Lakeland College offers one of Canada’s student-managed working farms.

Vermilion is a progressive community with great pride in its heritage. The special mention is for the new woodfired community brick Bread Oven in Heritage Park adjacent to the museum.

Built by volunteers, the oven is available for residents’ use every Monday night and can be reserved for use by families and groups. During special events and celebrations, it is a popular place to pick up a tasty treat, and its presence draws more visitors to the park”.

Within the actual context of climate changes and environmental concerns, communities involved in the program can be proud of their efforts, which provide real and meaningful environmental solutions and benefit all of society.

Community Journalism Matters

Wo r k i n g i n t h e newspaper industry opens one’s eyes to the reality that print newspaper is shrinking every week, but the question is why? Is it because our great-grandparents, grandparents and my generation are increasingly becoming more digitally savvy? Or is it because businesses and organizations are looking for cheaper alternatives to advertise their services, products, and events? I believe both are the reasons for the decline in the newspaper industry especially small local community newspapers.

More and more you see Granny’s and Pappy’s on digital devices, and small businesses and organizations are advertising their events, services, and sales even more on Facebook pages like “What’s Happening in ....” For now, they can do that most of the time for free, but I believe that as the world starts to depend more on digital media sites

like Kijiji, Craigslist, Facebook, Google, etc. those sites will see the monetary benefits of charging for their services. Kijiji that was once a completely free site, now charges a fee to anyone who wants to rehome a pet. I think those fees will begin to spread throughout the whole site at some point.

Facebook currently allows pages such as “What’s happening in ......” but for how long will they continue to allow those types of pages to impinge on their opportunities to create revenue? Nothing ever stays free; money will always creep into the equation.

Also, if the audience you are trying to target don’t know your Facebook page and the name of your Facebook page they can’t find you as easily as one may think, and may never see the information you are trying to get out there.

Another thing to think about is not everyone even in this day and age has internet.

I know a lot of people who don’t have internet and never want it. I know a lot of people who aren’t on Facebook and don’t check Craiglist or Kijiji, so why put all your eggs in one basket? Placing your ad solely on

I know some will say, placing an ad in your community newspaper doesn’t guarantee it will be seen either, and you are correct, but there is one thing I can guarantee, your local community newspaper does care about your business, and it does care about your organization’s event. That is a win-win situation for all involved. How you may ask?

Well, it’s a pretty simple concept when you look at it.

1) Your community newspaper is going to do its best to make sure your advertisement is seen by as many people as possible, because your success is their success.

Without your support their newspaper business will collapse, and they certainly do not want that to happen.

2) Local newspapers care about their community and the events which are held within it. When do you ever see Facebook, Craigslist, Kijiji or Google coming out to cover your event or sale? Never is the answer to that. When do you see those social media sites come out to cover the retirement of one of your employees etc. or go out in the cold to attend and cover one of your wintertime events? Never is the answer to that as well. When do you ever see any social media site do anything at all in your community and show support for your community? Never!! Local community newspapers are the ones who do that sort of thing.

I know you are maybe thinking why don’t print newspapers get with the times and go digital? Well, that would be a pretty simple solution for the printing cost wouldn’t it?

But a digital newspaper still requies reporters, they still need graphic designers, and they still need a place to conduct business, so that isn’t saving a whole lot there and besides let’s face it people like to see themselves in print.

Lately, I have been questioned by some members of the public why our paper has been smaller than it usually was, as our paper before 2015 was consistently 28 pages? Well, I am going to take this opportunity while on the topic to explain how our

free newspaper works. Basically, it goes like this: advertising sales are our only means of revenue and the number of pages, and the amount of colour within those pages are determined strictly on those advertising dollars. So if sales are down the number or pages go down along with it.

Just last week Sue and I had the dilemma of determining the number of pages we could afford. Revenue wise we should have been at 16 pages, but after much thought and debate, we decided to go up to 20 pages because we wanted to get as much local news, informative news and local events in as possible. We discussed putting submitted articles, photos and captions as well as school news just on our website and not in print but we didn’t want to do that: those areticles are just as important to us as any other article. If the recession and lower advertising sales continue to lower revenue, we may one day have to make the hard decision as to what we can or can not run in print. Hopefully, that will never happen. So as you can see your local community newspaper is doing its best to continue covering all your special events even though we do not have a non-community corporation backing us.

While The Canada Periodical Fund (CPF) provides financial assistance to Canadian print magazines, non-daily newspapers, digital periodicals, and TV, to enable them the opportunity to overcome market disadvantages, FREE community newspapers are ineligible for this funding, which makes no sense to me at all.

According to News Media Canada, “Canadian news media organizations have had to cut costs to remain profitable. From 2008 to 2014, employment in the sector dropped by 23 per cent as publications closed, reduced publications and cut staff, including journalists.

By way of example, in recent years the Guelph Mercury and the Nanaimo Daily News, both of which have published for over a century, closed their doors. Canadian news media organizations have also sought to embrace digital platforms but this remains challenging against the nature of the online advertising market, as well as the reluctance of readers to pay directly for content. Moreover, the critical link between content creation and advertisers has been severed in the online world: neither Facebook nor Google, which together claim more than 70 per cent of all online advertising revenue produce any of the content that is attached to that advertising revenue.” By advertising on these sites you are contributing to the US economy, not your Canadian economy and certainly not your local economy! News Media Canada, on behalf of the members across the country, have proposed that the federal government establish the Canadian Journalism Fund as a vehicle to ensure that citizens of Canada can continue to enjoy access to diverse sources of quality journalism.

After all, we must accept that this job is a truly important and respectful town council position. Of course, it is easy to criticize any individual that has served a term either as the mayor or even town councillor, but we do have the right as citizens of Vermilion to question why cer tain costly decisions have been made.

For example, the one expensive idea of developing the land directly south of the Veterinary Clinic into industrial lots.

Did the town council have at least six definite buyers for locating their business ventures in Vermilion? Or did the Mayor and town councillors foolishly

The smoke of butter and coconut oil is 350 degrees, so it is best to bake just under that temperature. For a dairy-free recipe, substitute canola oil for the butter, you can also use a 350-degree baking temperature when using canola oil. For the applesauce, I find it handy to buy the small single serving size, and one container is the 1/2 cup measure. Adding pumpkin and spices to the muffins make it a perfect fall muffin. Cinnamon, ginger,

and cloves are not only great flavour, but they are also full of antioxidants.

Pumpkin is a good source of vitamin A . For gluten-free muf fins, substitute the flour for an equal amount of gluten free pancake mix and reduce the baking soda to 1/2 teaspoon.

Another example of the Council spending the taxpayer’s funds fiscally IRRESPONSIBLY is the purchase of the WEBB’S AUTO SALES AND REPAIR property. When did any of the previous councils acquire the endorsement from the Vermilion residents that they have the RIGHT TO PURCHASE any real estate property from a private business?

The fact that town council spent over one million dollars to buy out Webb’s downtown property and have it sit with no prospect of resale definitely GALLS US. Is this fiscally responsible management of town coffers??

If there is a definite need for the town council to purchase land for housing development, then, of course, they need to buy the land. The business development from Tim Hortons to the new Pomeroy Hotel meant the town needed

to buy more land which was financially responsible. Now, we as taxpayers will be somewhat relieved by this development in the form of property taxes.

O n e of t h e m ayo r a l c a n d i d ate s talks about developing the Brennan north subdivision. Are there definite requests for building more new homes on newly developed residential land or is this once more a MAYBE NEED for new homes. Why can’t the town council consider approaching the owner of old properties near to downtown to help them to upgrade their properties or buy the lots for future development? After all, visitors to Vermilion will see the housing closer to downtown first. There are some properties east of downtown that are eye sores. Then many Vermilionites are to be commended for building new homes of various types on sites of old ramshackle living accommodations. Another area of town that needs some TLC is the south side residential areas. I’m sure no one wants to see any of our residential areas looking like old 97th street of Edmonton.

I read a Sept 12 article in Edmonton Journal. It’s called “Connecting the Dots Between NDP’s Coal Phase Out Plan and Hurricanes.”

The ar ticle blames hurricanes on coal-induced CO2 emissions and endorses the shutdown of coal power plants. Then it suggests that c oal communities are filled with biased workers who value money over climate.

The ar tic le then talks about the NDP giving Hanna a $450,000 grant to diversify the local coal-based economy.

When compared, the amounts of this taxpayer-funded grant and the

actual cost of the shutdowns are miles apar t. There are individual families in these communities who will likely lose an amount equal to 10% of that grant or more just on the value of their homes.

Huge numbers of people are losing—owners and workers at support industries, devaluation of proper t y and business holdings. And where are these people going to work when the shutdowns are completed? This is not going to be fixed with $450,000.

So our council needs to research ways of improving the ‘looks’ of existing areas of Vermilion such as some parts of our main drag - 50th avenue. Instead, there is too much concern on creating the NEW IDEAS in their governance.

Some of the previous ideas pursued by town council such as good signage, revitalizing the streets and sidewalks of downtown planting new trees are definitely assets to Vermilion. However, it is truly shameful that the 44th street south of 47th ave., and the exit road from the corner of Fountain Tire to the property line of the Vermilion Catholic cemetery have not, as yet, been properly repaired and paved. How many more years do the citizenery of town and country have to COPE with driving on rough roadways?

What do the business, recreation, and all other FRIENDS think of such terrible roads to drive on? I can easily think of several other valid things that should be done with the taxpayer’s money for the GOOD OF VERMILION. Please do not forget to vote!!

New Data Shows Federal Tax Proposals To Have Harmful Effects

An overwhelming majority (95 per cent) of tax professionals — and small business owners themselves — say the proposed federal tax changes will hurt middleclass business owners and their families, according to a survey released Sept 21 by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB).

Dan Kelly, President of CFIB, will present the new data to the Standing Committee on Finance (FINA) in Ottawa today.

“The government is trying to convince the public that these proposed changes are meant to support the middle class – that they are only targeting high income

business owners. The reality, however, is these are broad-brush proposals that are going to affect businesses at every income level across the country,” said Kelly. “Nine out of 10 business owners have told us that these tax changes are significant to their business.”

One of the government’s proposals would make it more difficult for small businesses, including family-run businesses, to share income with family members.

According to the survey, this change would affect two-thirds of small businesses, including more than 50 per cent who share income with their spouse.

Another proposal would limit a small business owner’s ability to keep certain

investments in their business as a safeguard against future emergencies or economic downturns. Notably, 65 per cent of small businesses hold some form of passive investment in their companies, most commonly income from property or land.

These two changes alone would affect the majority of small businesses in Canada.

“The implications of these changes for small businesses—and by extension to the national economy—are huge,” added Kelly. “These aren’t loopholes for the wealthy, as the government claims. These are legitimate ways for small business owners to grow their business, ensure the

Small Business Calls On Provinces To Join Campaign Against Unfair Federal Tax Proposals

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) is urging Canada’s premiers to join small business owners in the fight against the federal government’s tax proposals. As part of this effort, CFIB president Dan Kelly was in Winnipeg on September 22 to meet with the Manitoba government about the proposed changes.

“Over the past decade, most provincial governments have worked hard

to lower small business corporate tax rates to encourage job growth, investm e nt a n d i n n ovat i o n,” s a i d Ke l l y.

“Unfortunately, these positive provincial actions may soon be undone by federal proposals, which will dramatically change the way that small businesses are taxed in Canada.”

The federal government has pr o p o s e d m aj o r c h a n g e s to r u l e s governing how business owners share income with family members, save through the business, and address

These changes would also affect the provinces, as the Canada

Revenue Agency collects provincial corporate income taxes on behalf of eight of them.

“We are urging all premiers to join us in asking the federal government to take these proposals off the table until they conduct a comprehensive consultation with the business community and provincial governments,” added Kelly.

In addition to the meeting with the Manitoba government, CFIB has written a letter to provincial governments, encouraging them to join the campaign.

Warkentin has been a resident in the region for the past seven years and has recently settled down in Vermilion after marrying his wife, a local resident and business owner.

A pilot by trade, Warkentin ran the flight school as the chief flight instructor and now operates as a freelance flight instructor.

Born and raised in Vermilion, Justin Thompson seized the opportunity to submit his nomination for Town Council on September 18.

Thompson is a Rotary Club member, Lions Club Second-Vice President, a member of the Friends of Vermilion Public Library Board, and has coached U12 boys soccer.

“Politics has always been an interest of mine. It makes a difference to get out and take part,” said Thompson who has realized in the past few years that things aren’t always as set in stone as they may seem.

Thompson is a member of the Constituency Association Boards both federally and provincially for this area.

If elected, Thompson has an interest in joining the Economic Development Committee, Community Futures Lloydminster and Region Committee, and the Transportation and Utilities Committee due to his previous experience. He is also interested in the Library Board; and the Parks, Recreation and Culture Board.

“A big focus of mine is the attraction and retention of young families to Vermilion which is essential for its growth and sustainability. Key parts of this would come from ensuring businesses provide job opportunities, as well as ensuring adequate recreation and maintaining a sense of community spirit and pride,” said Thompson.

Thompson claims to be pragmatic yet principled and believes in maximizing resources, maintaining fiscal responsibility, and being compassionate. He also feels encouraging cooperation with different groups in the

community will be essential.

“I think council should be taking a proactive approach instead of a reactive one; identif ying problems and challenges before they become major concerns. A Town Council that understands the advantages and potential problems new technology presents is better able to provide the best possible services to its community members.

Our Town should strive to make this as great of a place to live as possible but not if it leads to pricing out the less affluent in the area.

The 47th Annual Rusty Bit Horse Show & Gymkhana took place at the Vermilion Agricultural Grounds with the horse show on September 16, and the gymkhana on September 17.

The Vermilion Light Horse 4-H Club organized the event, which included participants from other area clubs as well as a few community members and college students.

There were four age groups for the participants: Leadline, 12 and under, 13-17 and Adult.

Points were tallied on Saturday in Showmanship, English Equitation, English Pleasure, Western Equitation, Western Pleasure and Two-way Versatility.

For the Gymkhana on Sunday, points were tallied in Barrel racing, pole bending, stakes, Ring Spear, Keyhole, and Bare-

back $5 bill.

Points from both days were combined for the overall high point winners. Leadline highpoint winner was Hunter Enstrom, and 12 and under highpoint was awarded to Kayley Wartman.

Thirteen - 17 highpoint was awarded to Jett Smith, and adult highpoint was awarded to Lesley Farkash. Overall high point and winner of the Rusty Bit trophy was Jett Smith.

“The Rusty Bit Horse Show could not be successful without the support of the Coutts family who donates the Rusty Bit trophy every year, thank you to the Vermilion Ag Society for the use of the grounds, and all the volunteers who made the event a success,” said member Jill Smith.

Bill Coutts has lived in Vermilion all his life and handcrafted the trophy as a way of continuing a tradition started by his father.

Lakeland College Welcomes Six Members To Board Of Governors

Lakeland College Submitted

Lakeland College is pleased to introduce a full Board of Governors with six new appointed members.

“We had some public member vacancies on the board, so I’m very happy to announce that we finally have a full 12-member board after receiving orders-in-council from the Government of Alberta,” says Darrel Howell, chair of Lakeland’s Board of Governors.

Appointed public members Jo-Ann Hall Hall served a long career as assistant deputy minister with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. She has more than 30 years’ experience in the agriculture and forestry industries and has worked with several industry organizations including 4-H Alberta, agricultural societies, applied research groups and many agriculture commodity groups.

She has been involved with the 4-H Alberta Council, Growing Alberta, the Canadian Agriculture Extension Council, the Agriculture and Food Council and the Agriculture Research and Extension Council of Alberta. Hall holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics from the University of Alberta. She resides in Stony Plain, Alta.

Jenelle Saskiw Currently, Saskiw ser ves as the senior advisor for Alberta Counsel, a law firm in Edmonton, Alta. She previously served as the executive assistant with Legislative Services at the City of Lloy-

dminster and as the former mayor and councilor of the Village of Marwayne.

She served as a director with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities where she also acted as chair of the National Municipal Infrastructure and Transportation Committee, the National Rail Safety Working Group, the National Rail Proximity Initiative and the Railway Governance Committee. She was the vice president of Villages with the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association where she chaired the provincial Safe and Healthy Communities Committee and the Sustainability and Environment Committee. Saskiw has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Augustana University.

She resides in Marwayne, Alta.

Dianne Harder Harder has more than 30 years’ experience as a communications specialist in the agriculture industry. Based in Red Deer, Alta., she began her career at CKRD-TV. She has also worked at KG Country Radio, providing daily farm reports and regular rodeo coverage. She is a board member with the Westerner Parke Red Deer, served as a public member on the Alberta Human Ecology and Home Economics Association and was a volunteer with the 2013 World Plowing Match Organizing Committee.

Harder holds a diploma in Radio Arts from Lethbridge College.

Jay Woosaree Woosaree has extensive environmental experience in reclamation, revegetation, native plant development and land

stewardship. He’s currently the president and senior researcher of Woosaree Environmental Inc., and is a board member with the Whitemud Equine and Learning Centre. He previously served as chair of the Lakeland College Conservation and Restoration Ecology program advisory committee. He has served as treasurer and president of the Alberta Soil Science Workshop, and treasurer with the Alberta Institute of Agrologists - Edmonton Chapter. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture from the University of Alberta and a Masters in Agriculture from the University of Nebraska. He resides in Edmonton, Alta.

Last week, broadcaster and motivational speaker Wade Sorochan came to J. R. and delivered two presentations, one to the junior students and one to seniors.

He spoke of his own personal experience and struggles and linked them with the effects of current social media usage and mental health. Wade emphasized that the frequency and application of cell phones should be moderated to avoid drainage of one’s self worth.

This year’s student-elected Pirate Crew members spent a day at the Provincial Park meeting their crew members and planning out the year’s special events.

Amidst team-building and peer-coaching, students tossed around ideas of dances, contests, seasonal festivities, and special guests.

Grade 7 boys and girls volleyball teams were in tournament play last Friday. This year’s boys include J.A., Ty Bryden, Eli Crowe, Cody Duffy, Mitchel Heinrich,

Thirtythree grade 10 students and three super visors challenged themselves to “step out of their comfort zones” at their first high school retreat. Mr. MacMillan reinforce the response “Yes, let’s! to encourage our students when presented with a new situation or activity. The team, at Camp Encounter, led us through reflective discussion time highlighting God’s desire to be a part of our lives. Thank you to Mr. MacMillan for all of his organizing, bus driving and leg wrestling skills. Also to Mr. Martin and Mrs. MacMIllan for laughing, cheering and participating with the students.

St. Jerome’s Annual Fall Supper will be held this Thursday, September 28 at the Vermilion Regional Center. There will be two settings 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., as well as take-out available if you are unable to stay.

Tickets are available at the school office.

Come out for a delicious supper and a time to visit with neighbours and friends.

The Vermilion Library visited the St. Jerome’s kindergarten this past week to offer a program called “Books for Kids”.

The team includes Lawson Clyke, Kent Jackson, Jackson Livingstone, Carson Livingstone, Mark Livings to n e, S a m R e e, Q u e n t i n R e h m ann, Logan Schmahl, Ty Stenhouse and Jayden Young.

J. R. Robson School would like to thank the Vermilion Rotary and Lions Clubs for their generous donations to our breakfast programs. “Their community spirit is awesome,” says secretary Loretta Quickstad. Thanks also to the help and volunteered time of Mrs. Wilhelm; she makes grocery purchases and operates the breakfast room every morning for hungry students. Cereals, oatmeal, toast, bagels, and muffins are just some of the options.

Each student received a kit, which consisted of two books, a book bag, and a free family Library card for one year. The staff at the library hopes these kits will encourage families to establish a strong interest in reading and to view all the valuable resources that are available at our local library.

“Help! I’m Addicted to Social Media!” was a presentation attend by grade six to twelve students on Thursday, September 21 at J.R. Robson. Guest Speaker: Wade Sorochan (Broadcaster/Motivational Speaker/Author) discussed a variety of topics, Screen Time vs. Sleep Time, Thinking Before Posting, Online Safety, What is “Social Media Anxiety Disorder,” and Social Media and Mental Health. The students found this humorous and education presentation very informative and very relevant to the issues they face each day. J.R. Robson School and St. Jerome’s School sponsored this presentation.

Thank you to the Vermilion Credit Union for treating all the new teachers at St. Jerome’s with a Tim Horton’s gift card and timbits for the rest of the staff during the first week of school. This special gesture made us all realize that we are truly appreciated.

September 15 and 16 was another very busy weekend for volleyball. The Sr. Girls hosted their home tournament. It was a

terrific weekend of volleyball with our Sr. Girls winning bronze and the JV Girls taking silver in the Consolation Event. The Sr. Boys traveled to Cold Lake for the weekend. At the end of the round robin they sat first in their pool but lost a tough three set match in the semi-finals. The Grade 9 girls and boys played in St. Paul during the weekend. The Girls won Gold in the Consolation Event with the boys just finishing out

of the top four.

Cross Country is a short but exciting funfilled season. There are 26 dedicated students in Grades 4 - 6 who have been running after school two times each week. They spend afternoons running distances, doing hills and playing running games. This month, students will be running in both Riverdale and at the Vermilion Provincial Park against athletes from across the division. Good luck, Jaguars.

Volleyball is just getting underway for Grade 4, 5, and 6 students. This year there are just under 20 students taking part in practices after school on Mondays and Wednesdays until the end of October.

Together with Mrs. Throndson and Miss Rozka, students will work on a variety of volleyball skills including setting, passing, hitting, and serving, as well as game playing strategies. We look forward to seeing their skills and techniques grow over the next two months.

The Grade 2 classrooms got to meet their Roots of Empathy families for the first time on September 19. 2A met Baby Hendrix and

mom Shannon while 2B met Baby Blakely and mom Erica. The students learned about the baby’s temperaments and growth, and the strong attachment between mother and baby. Through this learning they will learn about feelings - their own feelings and the feelings of others - and develop emotional literacy. We are all very excited to watch our babies grow and reach new milestones over this first year of their lives.

Our first school council meeting was on September 18 and we had a great turn out. Thank you to those parents that came out to the meeting. Your voice is so important to us. We brainstormed ideas that parents would love to hear about at our School Council meetings, so stay tuned for the information sharing sessions that will be coming up this year. Our next meeting is October 16 at 7:00 pm. This meeting will be our Annual General Meeting. Come out and join our School Council this year.

Grade 6 VES students went to JR Robson on September 21 for an Un-Social Media Presentation. Wade Sorochan was the presenter. He talked about how social media can affect a person’s self esteem and contribute to social anxiety and depres-

sion, not just in teens but adults also. He showed what social media addiction looks like, touched on online safety, and talked about how technology affects people’s ability to sleep and get proper rest.

Every year bus drivers practice evacuating the school bus with their passengers so students know how to safely exit the school bus in the event of an emergency. The first practice evacuations have been occurring at various schools and are supervised by the principal and/or designate. Bus evacua-

tions for all buses and all schools in Vermilion are scheduled for September 26-28 in the mornings.

The Tigers played an aggressive game and kept it close, a third-period powerplay made it interesting, but the bounces didn’t go the Tigers way. A late goal and an empty-netter sealed a 4-1 victory for the Bisons. Foster Steinhubel scored the lone goal for the Tigers.

on Saturday as the Capital League’s Sherwood Park Knights welcomed the Yellow and Black to their barn. It was a feisty affair as a couple of early scraps set the tone for an edgy contest. The Tigers were down 3 - 2 in the third when veteran forward Brayden Wilson dropped the mitts and sparked the team to a 4 - 3 victory.

Veterans Maguire Blair, Evan Bardoel and Lucas Dennill all notched goals.

Former Tigers captain Ryan Mauws joined the coaching staff this season alongside returning head coach Ryan Earl. The Tigers returned to action on Friday, September 22 at 8 p.m. at the Stadium vs. Cold Lake.

Jr. B. Tigers Back On The Ice

The Vermilion Jr. B. Tigers hosted the Cold Lake Ice for an exhibition game on September 22. Evan Bardoel eyed the puck during the game with a final score of 3 - 2 for Cold Lake.
