An announcement on August 28, was made regarding the purchase of Vermilion’s Webb’s Crop Services Ltd.

by Richardson Pioneer Ltd. The transition saw Webb’s Crop Services close on August 31, and Richardson Pioneer open on September 1, with all employees maintaining their positions.

Lakeland Funeral Home Community BBQ

Hundreds of community members at tended the 4th Annual Lakeland Funeral Home Community Appreciation Barbeque held on August 30.

Having suppor ted Haying in the 30’s, Habitat for Humanity, and Walking through Grief in past years, Lakeland Funeral Home selected Commu-

nities in Bloom as this year’s charity organization.

The ‘Icycle Bicycle’ was on site and of fered to donate $0.25 from each treat sold towards Communities in Bloom.

Community members had the option of entering door prizes, that raised just over $1,100 for Communities in Bloom.

“We were grateful to be this year’s luck y recipient of the Lakeland Funeral Home Community Appreciation Barbeque,” said Communities in Bloom Chair, Donna Moon.

Guests enjoyed visiting in the summer atmosphere over a beef on a bun meal. They also enjoyed live musical entertainment by Amanda Shaw, ‘Key of Wheat’, and ‘Rose Country’.

This past weekend was Labour Day holiday weekend, and it is surprising how histor y and time can change the circumstances surrounding what we now call a holiday.

The first Labour Day can be traced back to the streets of Toronto on April 15, 1872, when the Toronto Trades Assembly organized Canada’s first significant demonstration for work-

er’s rights, and from that day parades throughout Canada have been held annually to demonstrate solidarity. In 1894 Prime Minister Sir John Thompson declared Labour Day a national holiday!

Labour Day when originally started was the day where workers had the oppor tunit y to seek bet ter working conditions and better wages.

Nowadays, Labour Day weekend is what many of us here in Canada consider our last chance to get out there camping before the end of the summer season. We look forward to packing up the travel trailer or car one

last time and heading out for some much-needed relaxation before our children star t another school year, and before the dreaded cold weather and snow starts surrounding us for the next seven or eight months.

But let ’s not forget why and how Labour Day began. If it was not for those workers who were brave enough to march on the street in Toronto back in 1872, we might not have the fairness we see in our professions today.

We may have uncontrolled hours of work each day that would work us to the bone. Our work environments may not be as safe as they are today with

all the guidelines employers have to follow.

I t h i n k fo r t h e m o s t p a r t we a l l work in the fields we have chosen and wanted to be in. Labour Day is meant to celebrate the workers and the labour movement too, it isn’t just about us getting the chance for our last summertime bash.

Helping One Animal At A Time

The Lloydminster & District SPCA which was originally founded by local concerned citizens who felt that animals needed to be looked af ter have been helping one animal at a time since 1966. The first animal to be rescued was a cat. The current Lloydminster SPCA facility was built in 1977 and is beginning to show its age, but additions have been added to help facilitate the employees and animals within its structure.

Jon Punshon who is the current executive director has considerable experien c e work ing in the field of animal welfare. “ Before coming here I worked at the Edmonton Humane Society for six years, so I worked in the older facility and then moved over to the new facility in 2009. In 2013 I made the move out here as operations manager and the last two years I moved into the role of executive director,” said Punshon.

U p o n b e c o m i n g t h e o p e r at i o n s manager, Punshon recognized the organization needed to work on improving their practices and bring the organization closer to industry standards. “ O n e of t h e b i g g e s t c h a l l e n g e s is that we inherited a large number of animals, par ticularly cats, where we were well beyond what would be considered the capacity to care for.

So, that was one of the first things we wanted to assess and look at reducing the numbers and even that of dogs.

When I started here in August of 2013 there wasn’t a kennel left for a dog,” added Punshon.

Four years later Punshon is pleased with the work they have done so far and noted that the number of dogs in care is substantially lower and attributes it the spay and neuter program implemented by the organization in 2014, where all animals are spayed or

neutered before being re-homed.

“What we used to do before is we would adopt them out, in particular, the kittens and puppies, and would inform the new pet owner that they would have to spay or neuter their animal when it became six months old. If they provided proof, we would return par t of their adoption fee to them. It was a logistical nightmare, and we found there was very low compliance. Another issue we had was we found out they didn’t have the pet anymore or didn’t have the money to do the spay or neuter, so we decided it was best just to do it up front and that way we know it is taken care of,” said Punshon.

Implementing the spay and neuter program has become a great way to manage the number of animals born each year. However, it does increase the operations cost to the Lloydminster SPCA as the adoption fee does not offset the cost of the surgery on each animal, plus the cost associated with keeping each animal while they stay at the shelter. The fee for adopting an adult dog is $225, an adult cat is $130, and the fee goes up relative to the age of the kitten or puppy.

A puppy aged 2 - 4 months is $300 and a kitten 2 - 3 months of age is $ 20 0, w h i c h in c lu d e s t h e s p ay or neuter.

During the last four years, Punshon noted that the average length of stay for animals has become reduced, in particular for dogs.

“The average stay for dogs now is about nine days, and the average stay for cats are still up there at about 30 days. We certainly find that the number of animals in our care has reduced because our adoption numbers have gone up and our reclaims are going up,” said Punshon.

They are not suited for shelters; it’s stressful for them, some of them are semi-feral, so keeping them in shelters is just inhumane.

It has been quite successful, and we often have a wait list for when those kinds of cats come in. We get sponsorship from vet clinics here in town s o t h at t h ey w i l l s p ay a n d neuter them at no cost. We have a number of strategies to increase our live release rate and to reduce the number of animals we have staying in a shelter at one time,” added Punshon.

The First Day

it seemed…was the goal each of us would constantly shoot for. In a way, many of the lessons I learned those two years in dealing with life served me well later on, yet I wonder these days if we are too scared to just step back and turn our kids loose to figure out the boundaries of their limits like we did back then. It’s too bad the old school is gone now, although I’d probably have to sign some sort of injury waiver just to attend the place again.

Learning To Work

Thank you for all the positive responses on last week’s article on entitlement. I received several visits, phone calls and emails from people who resonated with the article and are as puzzled as I am by the thinking processes of the entitled. The article is a starting place for dialog as to why some children grow up to be entitled adults while others the same age and the same school background, will enter adulthood with respect for all people, are giving of themselves and value their work.

It might have something to do with being taught to work. My children did not have the luxury of being entitled; they grew up on the farm, where we all had to work together as a family. They were kept busy doing the various farm chores, making chop, feeding pigs, chickens, cows, pulling weeds, digging potatoes, pulling wrenches, hammering nails, stacking bales or mowing the lawn. The pay was low to nonexistent but the meals were good. There was always something interesting to do, time for play, home work,

school sports, hockey and curling games and church on Sundays. Their university fund was money they made themselves, feeding and buying and selling pigs, (not exactly a luxury job). By a young age, they all became expert blind installers, helping me with my off farm work, not because they wanted to be blind installers, but because they were willing to help their mom and to learn something about business. They have since all finished university and have gone on to their chosen careers, with a good work ethic instilled.

Two of them now, own their own engineer related businesses, but I am most proud of all of them when I hear of their giving and selfless nature, to help others in need.

I frequently attend trade shows for my work. Their rules are no children under 16 are allowed. When I read this restriction, I remember my little businesses that I started when I was 12 to 16, years old, and my dream of having my own shop or restaurant one day. If I would of had the opportunity, as a youth to attend one of these trade shows and observe I would have been over the moon with the possibilities. I see nothing but benefits for children and youth being allowed

to be exposed to work, especially work that interests them. What a great learning experience it was to work for myself and for others as a youth, and to be frequently put to work by my parents and grandparents. Even my Uncle and Aunt would have work for my cousin and myself when I was visiting. We had pails of chop and water to pack to the pigs. And yes there was lots of pig s**t mixed into the straw for us to shovel out of the barn. That gave me an appreciation for almost any other kind of work. From my dad I learned carpentry, and how to show up for work to help other people. Both Grandmothers taught me to cook, but even better they taught me the love of cooking. One grandmother taught me her passion for of sewing, and how to make something out of nothing, which I am forever grateful, and from the other grandmother I learned the art of decorating and gardening, (aka pulling weeds), I helped her wallpaper the same two bedrooms every year, and so before I even graduated from high school I could wallpaper expertly on my own. We used to joke that her house was being held up with wallpaper, because the under layers of wallpaper were never removed, and who knew how many layers were there

before I started helping her. Or was she helping me? Little did I know at the time, that all of this early work was formative and resulted in valuable career skills, confidence and self esteem. The work relationship is of great value. I enjoyed the work because I enjoyed who I was with. I became a teacher, seamstress, professional interior decorator, designer and founder of an award winning shop, all because I was taught to work and I found out I liked it.

Are children still weeding the garden, picking peas, or sweeping the sidewalk alongside their parents or grandparents? Now there are apps for their smart phones to train their brain for success, and computer games to pass the time, but where are the relationships? Actual person to person social interactions and working together are being replaced with snapchat ,facebook and face time. I have often seen two young people hanging out, but they are not talking to each other, instead they are texting on their phones.

I am not sure where this will lead, but I wonder about the decline in the value of work relationships and the pro and cons of technology, for youth in our modern day society.

RCMP Investigate Fatal Two Vehicle Collision

Kitscoty, Alberta – This morning at a p pr ox im ate l y 2:00 a.m., Kitscoty RCMP responded to a two vehicle motor collision at the intersection of Highway 45 and Highway 893. Preliminary investigation indi-

cates that a car travelling southbound on Highway 893 did not stop at the intersection and collided with a trailer of a northbound semi-truck while it was turning.

The car started on fire after the collision and the driver of the semi-truck was able to pull a male passenger out of the vehicle before it became fully engulfed.

Tragic ally, the 22-year- old male

driver of the car from Edmonton was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The 20-year-old passenger of the car from Lloydminster, suffered serious life-threatening injuries and was transported to local hospital by EMS and then flown via STARS to an Edmonton hospital.

The 27-year old male driver of the semi-truck from Norquay, Saskatche-

wan was not injured.

Traffic was re-routed at the intersection until 8:00 a.m., while a RCMP Collision Analyst continued to investigate.

As this incident remains under investigation, no further information is available in relation to the cause, or contributing factors of the collision.

The name of the deceased will not be released.

The Grad Ring Mystery Solved

On August 27 our cats discovered a high school grad ring in our basement and thought it would be a great item to bat around the floor.

Upon finding the ring, Danny (my daughter’s boyfriend) brought the ring upstairs to see if we knew who the ring belonged, and we didn’t. Upon further inspection of the ring, we saw that the ring belonged to a graduate of Lloydminster Central High School and had the name, Jenna. I thought for a while trying to figure out how I could find the owner of the ring and came to a conclusion to place it on all the Facebook sale sites in Vermilion and Lloydminster.

Never once did I think about looking at the underside of the ring for an engraving.

Around 3 p.m. I had it placed and did receive responses advising me to call the Lloydminster school and ask them if they had any information on the Jenna who had graduated in the year 2004. By 9:04 p.m. I had received a message on Facebook Messenger from Jenna asking me if the ring had a blue topaz in it and it did. I messaged her right back saying “Yes” with her responding back saying, “I think that’s my ring you found!” While messaging with Jenna, I had received another Facebook message from Cheryl saying that she and her friend Jenna lived at the address I now live and that they had moved out in 2008. I asked Cheryl a couple of questions and realized the Jenna I was speaking with on messenger was the same, Jenna.

I asked Jenna if there was anything

else on the ring that she could identify and she said it had a 4H logo. I then knew I had the correct Jenna and made arrangements for her friend Cheryl to come and pick up the ring for her as she now lives in Calgary.

Jenna was extremely appreciative that we had found her ring that had been missing since at least 2008.

Monday morning when I brought the ring with me to the office, I told Sue about it, and she looked at the underside of the ring and saw a very faint engraving with her full name proving that it was indeed Jenna’s ring. Of course, even with her full name, I would not have known how to contact her, and it is a pretty cool that I could post it on Facebook and within six hours find the owner of the ring with nothing more than a name and a year.

Canadians Come Together To Raise Awareness And Funds To Help Beat MS

A&W Food Services of Canada Inc. is proud to announce its ninth annual Burgers to Beat MS campaign, which ran July 17 to August 24, has raised a record-high of $1.85 million for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada.

“Of that $1.85 million the Vermilion location raised $1844.55. We are grateful for all the hard work of the employees and the participation of the Mayor and car clubs in such an important fundraiser for our organization. We are looking forward to next year!” said Patty Milnthorp, MS Society of Canada Lloydminster Chapter Manager.

Since 2009, the campaign has raised more than $11 million to help provide programs and services for Canadians living with multiple sclerosis (MS) and fund research that will impact the lives of, and give hope to, those living with MS. Burgers to Beat MS is the single largest annual corporate fundraiser for the MS Society of Canada.

The campaign wrapped up on August 24 with Burgers to Beat MS day when A&W donated $2 from ever y Teen Burger® sold to the MS Society. To celebrate, nearly 900 A&W restaurants across the country hosted Burgers to Beat MS events – many featuring the Great A&W Root Bear®, A&W Root Beer® floats, music, games and other fun activities.

Leading up to, and on, Burgers to Beat MS day, Canadians raised funds for the MS Society of Canada by rounding up their bill at the register, purchasing $1, $2 and $5 paper cutouts, donating through in-store donation mugs, and participating in local restaurant fundraising initiatives. Online donations were made at BurgersToBeatMS.ca, and A&W also donated $40,000 for Facebook shares

of the Burgers to Beat MS online video featuring Christine Sinclair and popular A&W spokesperson Allen—from A&W’s TV commercials. Additionally, Canadians joined the conversation online using #BurgersToBeatMS on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and utilizing A&W’s national Snapchat filter. With this support, #BurgersToBeatMS trended organically on Twitter on August 24.

Hurricane Hurts

Spreading rampant devastation in Houston, Texas, Hurricane Har vey, has left Vermilion resident and owner of Southview Trucking, Darrin Farkash, cut off from contact with employees an d valu e d c u sto m er s for sever al days.

Farkash is unaware whether his sho p in H ouston, Texas has been flooded or not, and remains unworried about it compared to the destruction and loss of life that others have suffered as a result of the hurricane.

“I just feel sorry for a lot of people having their lives washed away like that. Even if our shop is flooded, it will be nothing compared to what other people have suffered,” said Farkash.

According to the ‘New York Times,’ as of September 1, the hurricane had claimed 46 lives.

Farkash’s son, Curtis, had left Houston on August 25, with rain already pouring prior to Hurric ane Har vey hitting on August 26. According to his son, there was no food left in the nearest grocery store, and the trip took a long time with traffic piling up in order to evacuate the city.

With six days of continuous rain, Houston has seen over 50 inches, and the storm has revisited land in Louisiana.

Ac c ording to Dr. Joel N. Myer s, AccuWeather President, the worst flooding from Harvey is yet to come as rivers and bayous throughout Texas continue to rise and additional levees are put at risk of breaches or failures.

“We do 80 per cent of our business out of Texas and Louisiana. With Port Houston being the busiest American port for foreign tonnage, this is affecting far more than just what we do,” said Farkash.

With his schedule heavily affected, Farkash said that further danger from the hurricane could include tornadoes along one third of the 3,347km trip from Vermilion to Houston.

“It’s going to take years to clean this up,” said Farkash. “ T h e e c o n o my ’s im p ac t w ill a p p r o a c h $16 0 b i l l i o n,” p r e d i c te d Myers, who expects it to be the most costly natural disaster in U.S. history.

Farkash said that it is tough when you can’t get a hold of anyone, but in the mean time, he chooses to remain optimistic.

drugs or “keeping busy” as a way of avoidance. Avoidance only delays addressing memories and can cause issues such as anxiety and relationship issues.

If you are struggling with depression, it could be the result of ruminating about the memories (replaying over and over) or despairing and regretting how memories made you feel. A release is to talk to someone about the feelings or write them and share with a caring person or group.

There can be more sadness ruminating over memories than doing something with the memories. ie. scrapbooking, relooking at photos, writing journals, visiting places that have signifi c anc e and memories. Take time to stimulate the memories of time shared. A Memory book or Memory box can be created with things such as post cards, ticket stubs, pressed flowers and many other things. This can be a very sad time but ruminating and not doing anything with the memories can be even sadder. Could it be as Dr Wolfelt says “It is as if the act of expression and creation begins to transform the despair into hope “ Remember that not all memories are pleasant for all. M emories of violence, abuse, trauma and other negative memories make addressi n g t h e t h ir d n e e d “ to r e m e m b er the loved one” more dif ficult. You

can’t ignore but need to reach out to someone trusted or a counsellor to explore those difficult, painful memories. If repressed they are carried to the future with underlying sadness or anger and depression often leaving one open to other mental health issues.

“Memories are the key, not to the past but to the future. Corrie Ten Boom Dr. Wolfelt says that “ in his experience, remembering the past makes hoping for the future possible. Your future will become open to new experiences only to the extent that you embrace the past One such way to honour the memory of a loved one who died by suicide is the upcoming Suicide Walk of Remembrance on Sept. 9 from 3 - 6 p.m. at the Bud Miller Park in Lloydminster. There is an opportunity to walk and remember, to share with others on the walk and to learn how to move in a healthy way through grief and make memories.

The walk is free and is supported by FCSS City of Lloydminster, Walking Through Grief Society, Alberta Health Promotions, PNRHA Mental Health Lloydminster Friendship Centre and Community citizens. The Vermilion 4-H Light Horse Club will be hosting the 47th Annual Rusty Bit Horse Show and Gymkhana at the Vermilion Agricultural Grounds on August 16 – 17 at 9 a.m.

“We really focus on encouraging all around versatile horsemanship in all participants. The members are very excited for this year’s Rusty Bit Horse Show!” said Krystal Enstrom-Vermilion Light Horse 4-H Club Leader.

On September 16, participants will perform both Western and English riding, and on September 17, they will continue with gymkhana events and games. The Rusty Bit Trophy will be presented to the recipient of the high point award and prizes will be given to those in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.

When asked what her favourite part of being involved is, Enstrom said, “I really like seeing the horse community grow, encouraging and helping each other at a fun learning show. The participant’s smiles and encouraging words make the show amazing!”

Charity Lamb Benefits Community

T h e Ve r m i l i o n 4 - H S h e e p C l u b donated the proceeds from their charity lamb sale of $4,250 to the Ron Moses Community Christmas Dinner and the Vermilion Food Bank on August 29.

Jennalee McDonald raised the lamb, and McDonald’s Family Food donated it for the Charity lamb project. Webb’s of Vermilion purchased the lamb and donated it back to the 4-H Sheep Club to be re-sold when it was purchased

by Rock Solid. The $4,250 was the combined price of the two sales, and the Vermilion 4-H Sheep Club shared that amount between the two local charities.

Vermilion 4-H Sheep Club Treasurer, Maranda Westegaard felt the project was successful and looks forward to 4-H again next year.

“It was nice that McDonald’s Family Foods donated the lamb, and it was for a good cause,” said Scott Webb, one of the buyers.

Bruce MacDuff - Aiming To Keep Transparency As Mayor

Bruce MacDuff announced his intention to rerun as Mayor of the Town of Vermilion in the upcoming election.

“I’d like to continue with the projects that we have on the go including the new lodge renovation, finalizing the new waste water treatment plant to begin construction in 2018, and continue with the development of the Brennan North Subdivision, as well as the marketing plan for the industrial lots. Another major concern is working with the Alber ta Government to access increased internet capabilities and broadband,” said MacDuff.

MacDuff and his wife Marilyn moved to Ver m ili o n in 197 7 w h e n h e r an Farmstead Builders until 1987. After obtaining his life insurance licence in

1988, MacDuff ran MacDuff Insurance Ser vices which became Advantage Insurance, and then MacDuff Financial Ser vices. MacDuff was elected Mayor in November 2013.

D u r i n g h i s t i m e i n Ve r m i l i o n , MacDuff was active in Vermilion Minor Hockey and spent two terms as president. He is also a past president of the Kinsman Club, where he was a member from 1977 - 1991. MacDuff is a past president of the Rotary club, where he is a current member, volunteering since 1996.

On Tuesday, August 22, 2017 Mrs. Joan Scarfe passed away peacefully at the Stettler Hospital and Care Centre at the age of 77 years. Joan is loved and remembered by her sons; Regan Scarfe of Stettler, Alberta, James (Tina) Scarfe of Lacombe, Alberta; sister June Pagnotta of Thunder Bay, Ontario; brother-in-law Howard Scarfe of Vermilion, Alberta; sisters-in-law Ardis Gordon of Melfort, Saskatchewan and Mildred Hughes of Jasper, Alberta.

She was predeceased by her husband, Len in 2012; daughter, Della Scarfe in 1981; parents Max & Hazel Russell; sister Rita Davis & brother Ron Russell.

A funeral service for the late Mrs. Scarfe was held on Saturday, August 26, 2017 from the Royal Canadian Legion, Vermilion, Alberta at 11 o'clock a.m. Interment followed at the Vermilion Public Cemetery.

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who phoned, sent flowers and food, and came to visit. Special thanks to the Family members from Thunder Bay who took time to call and for those who made the trip down to the funeral. Thank you to Reverend Aubrey Bell for the lovely service and to Barry Roth for playing the bag pipes. Thank you to Kim Shimko and the staff at Crossroads Funeral Chapel for assisting us in all the funeral arrangements. (NC) Ever wonder why you often get sick during the transition between fall and winter? Colds and flu are very contagious and can spread quickly and easily, especially as we move indoors and spend more time closer together. Here are some tips to help you stay healthy and fight cold and flu this fall: Get vaccinated. The best thing you can do to prevent the flu is to get your flu vaccine ever y year. Flu viruses change each year and experts create

a new vaccine to protect you each flu season. You cannot get the flu from the vaccine.

Hand -washing. Washing your hands is the single most effective way to prevent the spread of infections.

You can spread certain germs just by touching another person, and catch them when you touch contaminated objects or sur faces and then touch yo u r fa c e. Ke e p s h ar e d s u r fa c e s clean. Practice proper hand-washing by using an adequate amount of plain

It ’s back to school time, and for many students, it is a time when anxiety can rear it’s worried head.

Children may have a difficult time expressing these worries, but as parents we may see signs and symptoms: difficulty falling asleep, clinginess, mood changes, tummy aches, and more! Below are some ways to soothe and help our anxious children.

- It is very important that you do NOT allow your child to arrive late or miss a day of school because of their worry.

Avoiding what makes us anxious actually increases the anxiety and affirms to the child that they cannot handle the situation. Give your child the opportunity to reduce their anxiety on their own and work to increase your child’s belief in their ability to handle this. Teach them tools like deep breathing, positive thinking, visualization, and exercise to help them in anxious moments. This will go a long way towards your child handling struggles later on in life-

Worried About Back To School

- Start the routine before school starts.

This includes bed, wake, and meal times.

This will help your child to physically and mentally ease back into the school routine.

- If your child is very anxious, it can be helpful to visit the school and teacher before the first day of school year.

- Rather than saying things like, “You’ll be fine,” “There’s nothing to be scared of” or, “Don’t worry,” validate your child’s feelings. You know how it feels when you are worried and someone says these things, it really is not helpful. Rather, listen to your child! Ask what is making them feel worried. Validate that it’s OK to be afraid and then encourage them by reminding them of how brave they are and that they have the strength to get through this.

- Identify and focus on all the positive things about returning to school such as: seeing old friends, playing on the playground, getting to make great art, or participate in a sport.

- Send your child to school with a little piece of you to remind them of your love and support. This could be a picture of you, a little note saying that you love them,

New Degree Option For Lakeland’s Interior Design Grads

Graduates of Lakeland College’s award-winning interior design technology program can now transfer their credits towards a bachelor of interior design (BID) degree at RCC Institute of Technology.

Lakeland College and RCC officials recently signed a five-year articulation agreement that will allow Lakeland grads to transfer almost all of their credits towards the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) accredited BID program at RCC. Lakeland grads have

the option to take the program online or at the RCC campus in Concord, Ont. “We’re always pleased to collaborate with other post-secondary partners to help our students and alumni achieve their academic goals. This agreement with RCC provides a seamless pathway for our interior design graduates to continue their studies and ultimately earn a degree and a diploma,” says Michael Crowe, vice president, academic and research at Lakeland College.

“We are thrilled to welcome graduates of Lakeland’s interior design technology program to the BID at RCC.

These students come into the program with a strong technical background and foundation that will enable them to thrive as they complete their degree,” says Erin Melvin, program chair of the BID at RCC. In addition to being CIDA accredited, the BID program is recognized by the Interior Designers of Canada.

Graduates from an accredited degree with 3,520 work experience hours are qualified to write the National Council of Interior Design Qualification Examination, a professional licensing exam that enables them to become registered

interior designers.

Based at the college’s Vermilion campus in eastern Alberta, Lakeland’s interior design technology program provides graduates with a solid foundation in design fundamentals, drafting, space planning and more so they can create functional spaces. For the past 13 years, students have won awards in design competitions. Accredited by the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA), the program has received four NKBA Excellence in Education awards.

Agricultural Innovators Are Not Your Garden-Variety Farmers

(NC) It may come as a surprise that farmers are among the most innovative business owners in the country. As the costs of production rise and margins tighten, innovation is essential to improving levels of productivity and profitability for your farm.

“Farmers are natural innovators,” explains Gwen Paddock, national director of agriculture and agribusiness at RBC. “Although it’s not just about the bells and whistles and shiny new toys. Technology plays an important role, but so does innovation in areas such as genetics, sustainable practices, new crops and resource allocation. Ultimately, it’s about new ideas and using whatever tools will make you more productive and profitable.”

Vermilion’s Tom Brown shared a 1927 commemorative coin, and a 1939 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth I coin at the Vermilion Voice on August 29.

The 1927 coin was issued to celebrate Canada’s 60th Birthday, while the

1939 coin was made just after the Royal pair toured Canada by rail.

“The 1927 one my mother-in-law received while going to school. I collect all kinds of coins. If there’s an interesting one, I hang on to it,” said Brown who has pennies as old as 1906.

According to Brown, a 1930 -1940

commemorative issue of the Alberta Report showed the Canadian $4 bill being worth over $20,000 as it was discontinued in 1936.

Brown also shared an 1870’s story based out of Montana.

According to Brown, a bank had sent their payroll to a gold mine in a wagon

loaded with silver dollars (each weighing an ounce per piece). The wagon was stolen and the robber had loaded the silver on a buggy.

“The buggy was so heavy that the wheels collapsed, and the robbers had no choice but to abandon it,” said Brown.
