Webb’s Ford Grand Opening

Webb’s Ford held the Grand Opening of their new location in Vermilion on July 12.

The event began with staff welcoming long time customers to their open house where they had the oppor tunity to view the new facility as well as a selection of new and classic Ford vehicles located in the shop. Mrs. J’s Catering catered a beef on a bun lunch that included salads and squares with the beef supplied by Vermilion Packers.

Hundreds of family, friends, customers, community representatives, local dignitaries, and Ford representation attended and congratulated the Webb family on their recent and long time accomplishments.

Mike Webb emceed the opening ceremonies recognizing George C. Webb, his sons George, John, and Lawrence, as well as family members S c ot t, Jake, an d Ray who had all helped to make the business what it is today. Webb’s has been associated with the Ford Motor company for 71 years. Mike has great hopes for the next generation to continue to grow the business.

“It has absolutely been a hoot to see everyone here. This is a community and a family; not just the Webb family,” said Mike.

Jake Jacobson thanked dedicated customers, as well as past and present staff, and MLA Dr. Richard Starke shared his personal experience dealing with the company.

“I’m very honoured to be here today

to celebrate this milestone not just for Webb’s but for Vermilion, and our constituency. It has been a privilege to be a customer and get to know Mike and Scott and their families. They treat their customers extremely well, their staff like family, and have contributed to their community for decades. At the end of the day, that is what successful business is all about. On behalf of the Vermilion-Lloydminster Constituency, congratulations on your great achievement,” said Starke.

The Vice President of Canada Ford Sales, Tim Witt has visited close to 200 dealerships around the country and noted that the President’s Award is the highest satisfaction award with fewer than five dealerships in Canada having obtained over 30. Webb’s Ford in Vermilion is one of those few. “ The c ommitment that you have made to the Ford Motor Company is unbelievable,” said Witt.

He went on to thank the Webb family for representing them in the community, and the customers for their loyalty.

Communities in Bloom chair Donna Moon along with the other members urge everyone to make sure their properties are well groomed.

“Look at your neighbourhood and see what you can do, clean up a little bit, get a little weedwhacker going there. Make sure our community looks amazing,” said Moon.

The Communities in Bloom will also be hosting a Garden Tour on July 19 at the 4600 block of 50th avenue which will include a light supper at the Lions Park.

A Little Gesture Goes A Long Way

Never stop trying to be nice is my motto. Even when I am in such a bad mood, I still try to keep a smile and treat people with kindness.

The last few weeks I’ve had a difficult time keeping a positive attitude as things have been stressful, and I’m not one who likes to be stressed all the time. Stress can and will make you feel gross; for me, it makes me not want to be around

people very much because I know I can’t treat them the way I like to treat people.

Honestly, lately it has been a time I would rather just hang out in my own little bubble and pretend the world around me doesn’t exist, but let’s face it, that is just not realistic, and it would only make me way worse anyway as I very much like socializing with others.

The other day we found this little rock placed outside the office on the side walk, which you will see pictured with a caption in this week’s issue. The rock was painted a nice bright pink with the word “smile” painted on it, and it also had little

know, I say thank you!! Your gesture no matter how small it may seem to you really did go a long way, it didn’t just make me smile, but it made us all smile.

There you have it; it just proves that a little gesture can and does make someone feel better. Never think you can’t make a difference in this world because anyone can. If we all would take a page from this young person’s book (I assume young because of the writing), the world would be a much brighter, happier place to be. Always be kind and never stop trying to be, that is my lesson learned this week.

Colonial Days Comes To A Close

Lloydminster Exhibition Submitted

Lloydminster’s Colonial Days was a hugh success again in 2017. The action packed event was held from July 12-15.

On day one, the parade went off without a hitch, the agriculture shows were a huge success and the newly branded one-50 Pub & Eatery had a successful debut.

Visitors enjoyed the variety of entertainment at Colonial Days including the Nerveless Nocks Stunt Show, The Keepers Animal Show, tribute musician Jack Jackson, hypnotist Michelle Van Ree and tons of action in the Kid’s Zone.

The Brown’s Industrial Sales Monsters and Mayhem monster truck and tuff truck show was a huge hit again this year! The Grandstand was packed with cheering fans.

Alyssa Reid performed on the Grandstand Stage and won over the crowd with songs like “The Game” and “Alone Again” and the Prairie Dogs got the party going in the one-50 Pub & Eatery.

The winner’s portion of Wednesday’s 50/50 draw was worth $968. The winning number was Wed-17009 and it was claimed.

Day two of Colonial Days has kept the Fair momentum going. The Brown’s Industrial Sales Monsters and Mayhem Monster Truck Show packed the grandstand again on Thursday, the Junior All Beef Breed show went off without a hitch and Buck brought his Puppy Pals and Yellow Buddies out to the Kid’s Zone for some fun!

The Pot of Gold draw went unclaimed

on Thursday night, The winner’s portion of Thursday nights 50/50 draw was worth $1,238.

The winning number was THU-90358 and it has not yet been claimed. The winning number will be posted on the Exhibition’s website, www.lloydexh. com. The winner has 365 days to claim the prize!

The third day of Colonial Days was another success! The brand new Newcart Contracting Canadian Extreme ABBI Bulls & Bikes show filled the grandstand with an enthusiastic crowd that was wowed by bike stunts and bull-riding. We had another strong day of Agricultural Shows with the Working Horse, Light Horse, and Draft Horse shows. The Sheep Show had great participation and attendance. Kids of all ages packed the Prairie Toyota Kid’s Zone to play in the Kid’s Tent Full of Fun and be entertained at The Tent Guys Kids Stage.

Cold Creek County won the crowd over with new singles like “Homemade” and top hits like “Our Town”. Their interaction with the crowd ranged from hand-shakes all the way to coming down off the stage mid-song to take photos with fans.

The Pot of Gold draw was not claimed on any day so far, which meant Saturday’s Pot of Gold draw was for $10,000!

The 50/50 draw for Friday night was worth a total of $1,315. The winning number was FRI-13409 and it was unclaimed.

yellow polka dots. The rock came with a note which read “Take Me!” (the rest I will let you read yourself when you get to the page it is placed on). It was so cute that even in my somewhat grumpy anti-social mood it did make me smile. How cool is that?! A rock with a word painted on it did actually brighten up my mood.

I am sure the person who left it outside the office on the sidewalk had no clue there was a person in our office feeling a little blue, grumpy and anti-social, but wow what a difference it made. One act of kindness really did make my day better.

Colonial Days has once again come to a close and what a great year it was! The final day of Agricultural Shows included the Draft Horse Pull, Gymkhana, and Team Roping, and Ranch Dog Trials. The Demolition Derby was action packed.

Charlie Major put on an amazing show and it was enjoyed by a packed grandstand! Colonial Days ended with a bang with the Holiday Inn Fireworks Finale!

BOUQUET On July 7, twelve Vermilion Valley Lodge and Supportive Housing residents attended the U19 D girls softball provincials.

We would like to thank the organizers who waived the fee for our seniors, the score keepers who set up a marquee for us— we enjoyed the shade, and the front row seating— and the welcome of the umpires, a gesture which was very much appreciated. As were leaving, some team members hopped on the handi-van, and thanked the residents for coming to see them play.

It is gestures like these that make our seniors feel like an integral part of the community. It was a privilege for us to be there, and we thank the players and participants for making us feel welcome.

We had a ball of a day.

2017 ROADSIDE MOWING PROGRAM The County of Minburn No. 27 Agricultural Service Board will be commencing the roadside mowing program in 2017. The program will consist of mowing all road allowances with up to a fifteen foot cut from the shoulder into the ditch. Persons wishing to cut hay on a road allowance need to complete all cutting prior to the mowing contractor’s arrival. If hay has been cut and is in swath, mowers will go around that particular swathed ditch however all standing grass will be mowed with absolutely no exceptions.

The County will commence mowing after July 15, 2017.

July is a month in the calendar when there is a consciousness of the sky more than m ost…be c ause it c an have u s w i t h o ne eye u p while battening down the hatches, scurrying everything we can under cover, with flashlights and a radio close at hand…all at the same time. Much like my wife and I were doing this evening as the sky rapidly grew darker, and the winds picked up…usually not wasting any time when first hearing about the latest storm watch being the earliest to phone or text each other to coordinate the game plan.

The first real storm I remember hit one night as a young kid of about 8 or 9 in mid-summer when I was home with my brother being babysat by my older sister. First, the power went out (which it did quite regularly as I remember) and then the storm cell passed slowly directly overhead, the thunder and lightning combining to continually shake the house for what seemed l i ke h o u r s . W i t h u s k i d s h u d d l e d together frightened in the pitch dark all n i g ht w i t h o ut p ower, w h e n t h e morning finally arrived we discovered many yards of fence 100 yards east uphill of the house had been charred

and blackened by the closest strike.

Thankfully there wasn’t more damage than that, but the ferocity of that storm I can still remember.

It didn’t take long once our parents got home to sooth our rattled spirits that the weather stories were being p a s s e d d ow n. M o m’s s to r y a b o u t w i t n e s s in g b all li g ht nin g wa s o n e of them (worthy of a longer stor y in itself) and then the history about ‘The Cyclone’ was related.

Back in the early days of the Vermilion area, a powerful storm had hit one night about a mile NE from our house near Tolland. No one now could tell you for sure whether the storm was actually a tornado or just strong shear winds…but it came to be known as ‘The Cyclone’ ever since. It was one of the first recorded tornado events within Alberta. Some excerpts below are from the event as described by Mrs. Marie (Krueger) Love in the local history book ‘Up The Years to ’68 Hindville-Tolland’.

“Herman and Lydia Krueger, Marie 6; Ada 3; and Harry a baby of 5 months old, came to Tolland, Alberta in 1915 from Edmonton. A cyclone struck our house in the middle of the night of July 30, 1918. My father soon found us children and put us and the wet dogs in our sod chicken house, but he could not find my mother. He walked to the nearest neighbors, Charles McGraths and Tommy Walbanks. As soon as the storm let up they came over to our place and found my mother in the wreckage of the house. We were taken to McGraths. Then Fred Kottmeier, who I believe had the only car around there, took our badly injured mother, father and sister Ada to the hospital. Mother died there a couple days later. Mrs. Les Wilkinson washed and pressed a dress

that was found way out on the prairie to lay her in. The neighbours got clothes together and dressed us children. We left Tolland August 4, 1918 and we went by train to bury my mother at Welcome, Minnesota, and to be with relatives there.”

A Wikipedia search on Canadian tornadoes lists that in 1918 a tornado touched down near Vermilion destroying a log house, and three children were killed (mentioned in the Edmonton Journal July 7, 1965, pg. 13). I

could not find further information that it happened at the same time as the event in Tolland, but I’ve always assumed it and I’m sure some of the old timers in the area would know.

As our family grew up on the homestead quarter of Fred Kottmeier…have always felt a part of that story.

It was something real that hit close to home, so when the skies darken in July I can’t help but think of that one stormy night the house shook and wondering about ‘The Cyclone’.

Holy heat wave for us Canadian t ypes se e m s i t wa s r i g ht across North America this last weekend; our te m p er ature s were pretty tame compared to some of our southern neighbours. However here in Alberta anything above 30C is beyond heat wave for most of us, we saw 33C, not the worst we have seen in these parts but quite hot none the less.

We Canadians are pretty adaptable, but heat waves can slow most of us down really fast, I don’t like it but have developed a routine that works very well for me.

I dug post holes, rototilled in the garden, hilled potatoes, all the things that most would avoid, but all I have to do is work hard until I perspire than I am just fine after that.

I wear a big ole cowboy style straw hat, provides great shade and is very breathable. Also, I wear a bandana around my next, which I drench in cold water, the evaporation process keeps the neck, face and head cool. It actually can drop the temperature ten degrees just keeping the bandana wet, of course, drink lots of fluids,

Tzatziki is a wonderful Greek dip made from Greek yogurt. It usually accompanies souvlaki, fish, spanakopita, pita bread or crackers as a dip. water, and sports drinks preferably, and take lots of breaks in shady, cool areas. I find I am actually cooler working hard until I perspire a little than I feel cooled down, any breeze makes it that much better, and my shop really stays much cooler, so I take breaks in there often.

The pup herd also spend a lot of down time on the cool concrete and take short play breaks, for northern dogs, however; they can adapt to the heat very well, their unique wool undercoat that keeps them warm in winter also keeps them cool in summer. However recently most of them “blew their coat” which in Alaskan Malamute or most northern breed terms means that they instantly shed that wool undercoat to renew it for fall and winter. So they will spend a lot of time in the kiddy pools, cement pond or the duck pond, have a blast of energy… play like mad for a few minutes...drink a gallon of water and back to the shop floor nap routine, this goes on all day.

They will shed a mass of wool that equals their body size, where I brush them down it looks like someone ran over a couple of pillows with a lawn mower.

Their routine to help them in the heat is a lot like mine or vice versa, however, their break and nap downtime is much

more dominant than mine, but it works and helps them cope very well. Of course thanks to the pups I get a wet shower almost every time they have a swim as I described in last week’s column, so that also helps whether I need it or not.

I have all the post dug in and concreted now and am working on the frame and chain-link fencing; the garden is growing like a weed …literally, the weeds seem to have appeared out of nowhere so I used the two smaller garden tillers and did the garden.

I also did the final hilling of the potatoes, the first batch I planted are way past the knees high and are already flowering, there will be garden fresh new potatoes in just a couple short weeks, nummy I can’t wait.

The long term forecast for this coming weekend was in the mid 30’s C, but thankfully it has been downscaled to just below 30C, which will be more manageable, it still will be warm, and everyone will still need to use caution.

We are getting a little-needed rain in between today, so that is ok, at least it isn’t torrential downpours, gives us a little break and some will sleep much better.

and a medley of other very highly nutritious ingredients. When you choose your yogurt, look for active cultures on the label, as they will be more beneficial. I have noticed that there are Greek yogurts of different thicknesses. The Greek yogurt that has higher protein is generally very thick, and it is perfect for a dip. If you want more of a salad dressing, then a regular plain yogurt is fine. Be sure that you read the container careful and do not buy a yogurt with added sugar. If you use garden cucumbers then be sure to peel them and remove the seeds before grading them. If you use English cucumbers, then go ahead and grade them with the

skin, and do not try to remove any seeds.

If you have a garlic press, then go ahead and press the garlic, if not then finely chopped will do. I just made this using fresh dill from the garden and some fresh mint that I picked up at the grocery store.

It was fantastic with fresh cut carrots, red peppers and celery for dipping.

• Try cooking vegetables such as eggplant or cabbage wedges on the

• Cook a potato, yam or cob or corn wrapped in aluminum foil on the barbecue.

When choosing meat, fish or tofu to grill: • Look for lean cuts or poultry with out skin • Use a marinade • Cook meat on foil or a grill pan • Cook at a lower temperature and t rim charred pieces of meat • Choose fish and shellfish more

I then drain the cucumber juice off into a glass and then press any additional liquid out after another 5 or 10 minutes. You can drink the cucumber juice or save it to thin the dip into a dressing if needed. Combine all the rest of the ingredients. Refrigerate for 30 minutes for the flavours to blend.

• Grilled peaches, pineapple or plums with a dollop of Greek yogurt are a tasty dessert.

• Try homemade frozen desserts by freezing your favourite smoothie recipe in a popsicle tray or small cups with a popsicle stick in the middle.

Lakeland Adds $120 Million To Local Economy

(Vermilion, Alta.) – During the 2015-16 academic year, Lakeland College and its students and alumni added $119.9 million to the local economy, which is equivalent to supporting 2,524 jobs in the Lakeland Service Area, according to an economic impact study completed by Emsi in June 2017.

The contribution of Lakeland College consists of more than influencing the lives of students. Lakeland also has a positive impact on the regional economy by generating value in return for the investments made by its major stakeholder groups— students, society and taxpayers.

Lakeland’s payroll plus day-to-day operational spending added $51.6 million in income to the local economy. In addition, the impact of student spending during the year generated $5.1 million in new income.

“This study demonstrates that the

difference Lakeland College makes in the lives of our students has an incredible effect in the region. The Lakeland Service Area contributes to our quality of life in many ways, so we are grateful for the support of the community,” says Alice Wainwright-Stewart, president and CEO, Lakeland College.

Students receive increased earnings Lakeland served 8,111 students in the study year. In return for their investment in Lakeland, they developed the skills essential to excel in the workplace and will make more money. For every dollar they invested at the college, Lakeland students will receive a cumulative return of $4.70 in higher future earnings over the course of their working careers. As long as those students remain active in the provincial workforce, society will receive a cumulative value of $6.10 in benefits for every dollar they spend on education from Lakeland.

The report also highlights the contributions of Lakeland alumni. Former students working in the regional workforce contributed $63.3 million in added income.

Additional benefits Over the students’ working lives, provincial society will receive a present value of $555.5 million in added income.

Society will also benefit from $5.4 million in present value social savings related to reduced crime, fewer demands for income assistance, and increased health and well-being across the province.

Specifically, savings to the public sector add another $2 million in benefits due to a reduced demand for government-funded social services in Alberta. For every dollar spent by taxpayers, they receive $2.40 in added taxes and public sector savings.

The first need of Mourning is to accept reality of the loss. Does this happen right away? No. Accepting that reality will ebb and flow as we learn thisOis a

process and not an event.

As you replay memories both good and bad you may need a good non judgemental listener to talk to as you work through the first need, a time to discuss events around the loss and memories you have. Replaying events and thoughts are how your brain and heart eventually come to terms with the reality of the loss. Finding and talking to that trusted person is so important on your journey; be it a friend, family member, counsellor or support group.

When you recognize the signs of depression on your grief journey take steps to find the support you need and reach out to them . It will be one of the most important things you can do.

Town councillors, Parks and Recreation committee members, children from the Vermilion Summer Fun program and community members gathered at the site of the new Pilkieville park on July 14 for its official opening.

Before the opening ceremony, children from the community and Summer Fun program could be seen laughing and having fun swinging and climbing on the newly installed playground equipment.

Councillor Rob Pulyk gathered the children together before emceeing the grand opening ceremony.

“I’m here today to do the official opening of the Pilkieville playground. Can you say

that (Pilkieville) children?” said Pulyk According to Pulyk almost two years ago Parks and Recreation thought the area of Pilkieville needed a playground as the closest playground to the area was across Highway 41.

“Through the Town, we did a survey of the people who live around here to see if they thought there was a need for it and if the location was great and what kind of playground they thought they would want.

The choices were either the new style natural playground where the children could climb over hills and rocks and over trees or the traditional playground; the members of the community decided they would like a traditional playground,” said Pulyk.

committee obtained different playground designs and that they decided to let the children of the community decide what style of playground they wanted.

“Different designs were sent over to VES and the children of VES voted on the style they wanted here, so thanks to the children of VES we have the style here today that they chose which is really unique,” said Pulyk.

The total budget for the new playground was approximately $75,000 with funding coming from the Municipal Sustainability Initiative and Parks Development reserve.

Blue Imp from Edmonton supplied and installed the playground equipment, while Greg Young Trenching prepared the site and donated towards the cost of the exca-

vation while Lloyd’s Limb’s was involved in the tree trimming and getting the area prepared and the Town staff helped with preparation.

“One of the beauties of this area is that the Town owned the property and it was just sitting there not really used,” said Shawn Bell, director of community services.

“We had few other areas within the community here but we felt this was the best choice,” said Pulyk.

Nicole Frankiw from the Vermilion Summer Fun program feels the new playground is a bonus to the community.

“I think it is awesome! There is a lot for them to do, a lot of climbing which is something they all love to do,” said Frankiw.

The Pilkieville Park Is officially Open.

Local Curtis Anderson was a guest s p e a ker at t h e Ca n ad i a n C ow b oy Classic golf tournament held in Airdrie on June 8.

The tournament fundraises for the Canadian Pro Rodeo Spor ts Medicine Team (CPRSMT) who Anderson credits with saving his life. On June 26, 2002, Anderson had taken his 10 years of bull riding experience and entered the Ponoka Stampede. During his ride he had lost his balance and was struck in the head twice, and as a

result suffered a brain injury.

“The CPRSMT was there on the day of my accident. They saved my life,” said Anderson.

Anderson continues to spread brain injur y awareness, and some of the proceeds from the Courage Canada Trail Ride that he spearheaded go towards helping out the CPRSMT as well.

“Any amount will help them down the road,” said Anderson.

Dogs At Vermilion Provincial Park

The Vermilion Provincial Park would like to remind visitors that all dogs must be kept on a leash and kept under control while visiting the park.

According to Alberta Parks regulations, all animals must be restrained by a leash or chain less than two meters long. For campers, Alberta Parks stipulates that your dog should not be left unattended or allowed to bark continuously at your campsite.

Alber ta Provincial Parks are protected areas and as such pets are required to be on a leash to avoid interrupting ground-nesting birds, deer, or other animals.

Conservation Officer, Gary Walsh said that dogs in the park can also be injured by wildlife including ticks,

skunks, porcupines, coyotes, cougars, and bears.

According to Walsh, there have been two incidents in the Vermilion Provincial Park involving severe dog attacks, and he would like to see people adhering to regulations before more restrictions have to be put in place. Infractions can result in fines.

For pet owners seeking off-leash freedom for their dogs, they can visit the off-leash dog park on the east side of Vermilion located by the Vermilion Water Treatment plant off 44th street. “ Fo r yo ur s afet y a s we l l a s t h e public’s, and so that we are not prohibited from having pets in the park, you must be in control of your animals because dogs may have unpredictable responses when meeting people, other dogs, or wildlife,” said Walsh.

Oodles of cuddly, cute animals are expected to be at the Old MacDonald’s Barn during the 2017 Vermilion Fair from July 27 - 29.

Committee members are still seeking kittens, puppies and bunnies to include with their selection, as well as youth volunteers for one and a half hour barn shifts. To donate pets or to volunteer, you can call Stephanie 780-853-0342 or Tammy at 780-8530698 for more details. Many of the animals in Old MacDonald’s Barn will be up for adoption following the fair, so if you are looking to grow your family

with a furry friend, consider stopping by to check out the adorable options at the Vermilion Fair. The Vermilion Agricultural Society assures that all pets up for adoption have received their vaccinations, and encourages good family adoption fits for pets.

Even with no plans to adopt, hundreds of children will travel through Old MacDonald’s Barn to ensure the animals receive as much love as they can stand during the three day fair. “ The bar n is o ne of t he big g est attractions for the children, with lineups so of ten that we of fer the pets break times between shifts” said Ryan Cousins, Brynn and Mercy Harrison pick out their favourite kittens in the Petting Barn at the Leahy.

Innisfree Slo-Pitch Tournament Takes Over Birch Lake

The Innisfree ball diamonds overlooking Birch Lake were full of softball enthusiasts this past weekend as the annual slo-pitch tournament got underway with 20 teams coming from Vermilion, Mannville, Two Hills, Vegreville, Lamont, St. Paul, Edmonton and also five Innisfree teams.

The Saturday tournament also saw the annual Kyle Jackson memorial event. In previous years the friendly competition consisted of a homerun challenge but this year event organizers changed things up a bit to include a relay race of softball skills.

Kyle Jackson was a participant of the tournament until he passed away in a c ar ac c id ent in September of 2011. Family and friends of Jackson

form a memorial ball team each year to remember their loved one and this year also placed second in the relay race.

The funds raised were given to the Jackson family to donate to the charity of their choice which Jackson’s mom Jamey says they donated some of the money to the Innisfree Ag Society for helping put on the ball tournament, and the remainder will be donated to the Innisfree Kindergarten with the presentation being made when school starts again this fall.

Event organizer Conrad Baranec said the maximum 20 team rosters filled up quickly and said the tournament was a great success again this year with good weather and commended the work done to make sure the diamonds were in fantastic shape for the tournament.

Upcoming Poultry Show

The Vermilion Fair’s 3rd Annual Poultry Show will be held at the Heritage Pavilion Hall on July 29, at 10 a.m.

This year’s event will be sponsored by Peavey Mart and is sanctioned by the American Poultry Association. Visitors can expect to see the many breeds available including Orpington’s and perhaps Rhode Island Reds, Cochins, Polish, and Ameraucanas. Waterfowl at the show will include ducks and geese with other fowl

such as turkeys and guinea fowl.

This year, a special 4-H class has been added to celebrate 4-H Alberta’s Centennial. According to chair of the poultry show, Charlotte Wasylik, the pen of 3 class (with one rooster and two hens) is good for anyone beginning to show poultry.

Judge Jim Adkins will be giving a free seminar after the show on sustainable poultry. Anyone interested in entering the poultry show can visit www.vermilionag. ca or call 780-853-4108.

The Vermilion Fair ’s 2nd Annual Rabbit Show will be held at the Heritage Pavilion Hall on July 28, at 10 a.m.

T h e s h ow i s s a n c t i o n e d by t h e American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA), held in conjunction with the Edmonton Area Rabbit Society, and will be judged by Valerie Upgrafft and Michelle Wojcik. There will also be a non-ARBA youth rabbit show.

Dif ferent breeds of show rabbits vary significantly both in colour and

size. The ARBA recognizes 49 unique rabbit breeds as well as 13 breeds of cavies. According to chair of the rabbit show, Charlotte Wasylik, visitors can expect to see some small enough to fit in your hand, and some as large as 20 - 30 lbs.

“As pets, I like rabbits because they are different. They are very personable, and you can enjoy them in an inside or outside environment,” said Wasylik.

Friends Of The Earth National Poll Finds Majority Of Canadians Believe Pesticide

Exposure Most Important Threat To Bees Most Canadians (89 per cent) believe “pesticides” are the most important threat to bees according to a poll conducted on behalf of Friends of the Earth Canada in May by Oracle Poll Research. Almost eight out of ten believe the loss of suitable floral resources was important (79 per cent).

More than six out of ten also cited other threats as important - habitat loss 68 per cent, disease 67 per cent, climate change 66 per cent, and modern intensive agriculture 65 per cent. Friends of the Earth believes that all these threats to bees are very important and are cause for urgent action by all concerned.

In total, 68 per cent of all Canadians surveyed said that they were concerned or very concerned, compared to only 11 per cent not or not at all concerned, while 20 per cent had a neutral opinion (neither concerned nor unconcerned) and 2per cent were unsure.

Total concern was highest in Quebec (76 per cent) and BC (75 per cent), followed by Ontario (66per cent), Manitoba / Saskatch-

ewan (65 per cent), while lowest in Alberta (60 per cent) and the Maritimes (59 per cent).

“We are impressed with the depth of concern for bees from Canadians across all ages and backgrounds and, that people in urban and rural settings share the same levels of concern for bees. But, we do need to help Canadians better understand the importance of wild, native bees,” said Beatrice Olivastri, CEO, Friends of the Earth Canada. Almost seven out of ten Canadians don’t know that the pollinating role of wild, native bees cannot be replaced by honey bees.

Despite high public concern, Environment Canada has not acted to protect six wild, native species recommended for protection by the scientists working as the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC).

“In fact, our poll demonstrates more than enough public concern and support for the federal government to act comprehensively to protect all wild, native pollinators. We need to invest in science, policy and practical measures to protect Canada’s over 855 species of wild, native bees from pesticides,

habitat loss and other big threats,” says Ms. Olivastri. Other countries like the United States and the United Kingdom have national pollinator policies designed to protect bees.

U16 Boys – Provincial Soccer Champions

The U16 boys Vermilion Strikers became provincial soccer champions on July 9, in Camrose.

They won their first game against Sherwood Park 7 - 0, followed by a 1 - 0 win against Didsbury, and 5 - 0 win against Rocky Mountain House. They played the gold medal game against Hinton winning 2 - 0.

The team won five gold medals this year at tournaments and acquired 11 shutouts; three of them at provincials.

Their undefeated season included 22 wins and one tie. Overall they scored 113 goals with only 17 against.

According to player, Evan Sader, the team had been at the provincial tourna-

ment the past two years, but this year’s minuscule changes led to success.

“We played different formations the whole year than we ever had before, which gave us more strength midfield as well as on wing play,” said Sader.

According to assistant coach, David Sader, the real excitement came after the second last game against Rocky Mountain House.

“I think the strutting had begun before we walked into the final; the team had confidence the night before that we would have a victor y. It was abso lutely fun watching so many successful passes and opportunities to score; celebrating each moment. Vermilion U19 Shadows – Provincial Softball Champions

Vermilion came out on top as they hosted the U19 D Girls Softball Provincial from July 7 - 9.

According to head coach Dana Gard, the weekend was a volunteer and community sponsored event made truly successful because of everyone’s willingness to come together.

“After we were awarded the medals, we were told by all teams and Alberta Softball that Vermilion Minor Ball hosted an amazing event and that we should host more often,” said Gard.

Vermilion won all of their games going 4 0 in the round robin. During the semi-finals, they played Red Deer again and moved on to play Bonnyville in the finals.

Overall, in fourth place were the Red Deer Rage, in third place, were the Elnora Angela, in second place was the Bonnyville Angela, and in first place were the Vermilion Shadows who claimed a 10 - 1 victory in the finals.

After their undefeated season, the Shadows took things one step at a time throughout the tournament to earn their spot as champions.

“I could tell the girls and us coaches were a little nervous to play Bonnyville because we had previously played an exhibition game against them which we lost. I reminded the girls that this is just another game against another team and to take it play by play - pitch by pitch, but we definitely had luck on our side.

Pankiw, struck out all three of their starting batters which really got the girls going! We had big hits from all of our players including our captains, Allison Schmahl and Tenille Chase, which soon caused us to be up by 10 - 1.

On the last inning of the game we just needed one more out. One of Bonnyville’s biggest hitters was up to bat, she crushed the ball out to Left Field, which sent Janyl Bardoel running out to make a jumping catch that won the game!” said Gard.

“I didn’t know it was going to be the game-winning catch until we went into the dugout. I was honestly happy it didn’t just go over my head,” said Janyl Bardoel who is already excited for next year and thrilled to be able to continue to play.

In her third year playing softball, Bardoel usually plays third base and short stop, but had been sick so felt, even more, pressure being recently placed in the outfield.

U14 Boys – Provincial Soccer Champions

On July 9, the Vermilion Strikers U14 boys became provincial soccer champions.

According to assistant coach, Mike Crowe, the season had gone really well.

Taking the team to provincials with four players from the other U14 boy’s team, they were hoping for the best. They won both pool games against Wetaskiwin (5 -1) and Edson (4 -2). They went into the semi-finals against Vegreville which gained a lot of excitement as they went

into penalty kicks. Taking on Camrose in the gold medal game, they won 4 - 1 earning the title - Provincial Champions.

“It’s all a bit overwhelming,” said head coach, Todd Ree. Parent, Shelly Corbiere said she was super proud of all Vermilion Striker players because each player that attended the Provincial tournament was there with the same goal.

“The U14 boys worked very hard for this and deserved the Championship. It says a lot about the caliber of skill that Vermilion has when we can walk away

from the Provincial competition with not one gold, but two gold medals and a fourth place finish for our U14 girls; all amazing standings I think,” said Corbiere.

Corbiere’s son, Clay, was one of the players who had been asked to join them at provincials and was grateful for the experience.

“It was an honour when coach Todd asked me to play with the team. I noticed the refereeing was a higher quality than I had experienced during the regular season. Attending Provincials and winning gold was an experience that I
