Canada Day

Top: Canada 150 Mosaic Unveiled The mosaic was painted by 530 young and elderly participants from Vermilion. They each painted a 4 x 4-inch tile for the Canada 150 Mosaic. Communities from coast to coast created thousands of tile paintings for mosaics this year to connect as a nation in celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday. Vermilion was one of 15 towns in Alberta that have participated in this project.“The Lakeland College Alumni Hall was chosen to be the centre object and focal point of the mosaic because it is such a big part of our community and heritage. Alberta became a province in 1905. It is amazing that only three years later in 1908, that the Vermilion Board of Trade lobbied the provincial government for a demo farm and or an agricultural college. In 1911, the provincial government purchased land west of the Vermilion town site. In 1913, Vermilion School of Agriculture was the first of three Alberta Ag colleges established that year. This remarkable effort by the Town of Vermilion in 1908 through its Board of Trade has underpinned the industrious climate of Vermilion through the years,” said Chair of the Mosaic Committee, Keri Pullyplank. ‘Here’s To New Beginnings,’ was the graduation theme, and several dignitaries congratulated the class on their accomplishments as well as how glorious they looked for the special occasion.

“New beginnings happen when you look for them, not when you sit back and wait for them. You don’t have to be rich and famous; give yourself a new beginning each day when you get out of bed in the morning. You may very well impact those around you and future generations,” said Bates.

MLA Dr. Richard Starke noted that the class theme represented the kind of optimism that embodies youth. He

encouraged the graduates noting their capacity and potential.

“Don’t ever be scared of failure; you’ll learn more from that than from success.

Your attitude will determine your altitude. Congratulations on behalf of the Vermilion-Lloydminster Constituency, I wish you every success in your future endeavors,” said Starke.

Councillor, Greg Barr, congratulated the class on behalf of the Town of Vermilion, and recommended not being fearful of change. As a 40 year J.R. Robson Alumni, he said that students

may be able to look back after 40 years and appreciate being part of the change.

Buffalo Trails Public School Board Trustee, Bernie Huedepohl, noted that new beginnings emphasize possibilities.

“All of your experiences have formed your character, which will determine your response to whatever happens in your future,” said Huedepohl.

Overall, a beautiful ceremony was enjoyed before transitioning to the Regional Centre, where families continued to celebrate with a banquet and grand march.

Lea Park Cattle Association Farewell Submitted

June 21, was a bittersweet evening for the Lea Park Cattle Sales Association as they closed a chapter with the sale of their land & auction facility.

However, as a result of this sale, they made several non-profit organizations very happy with their monetary donations totalling $390,000!

It was with heavy hearts that the Association members bid farewell to this community event that ran for 64 consecutive years from its inception in 1949 to the last sale in 2013. The 2nd Monday in Sept. community members gathered each year to sell their cattle, work the sale or booth or just to watch the sale and enjoy a homemade burger, piece of pie as well as a visit of course! It was a huge social gathering, a tradition for

many that was a part of several generations’ lives.

The evening saw the end of an era but the ‘Lea Park Sale’ has left a lasting impression with their donations.

Thirty per cent was given outside of the community to both STARS and the Stollery Children’s Foundation. Seventy per cent stayed within the communities of Marwayne, Heinsburg & Tulliby Lake.

Several different non-profit groups were chosen, namely Ag Societies, Community Halls, Fire & Rescue Squads, Cemeteries as well as Jubilee Park, Lea Park Rodeo & “Haying in the 30’s.”

Innisfree Trout Pond Action Heats Up

The trout pond located just west of Innisfree saw an influx in hooks hitting the water on Saturday, June 17 as the Innisfree and District Fish and Game Association (IDFGA) held its annual fishing derby. The derby falls on the heels of the larger fish stocks being deposited to the pond early that week.

Local and out-of-town fishermen attended the derby and enjoyed a day out with free hot dogs and hamburgers and beverages right next the shores of the

pond, supplied by the association.

Prize for various age categories were offered up and the action got underway shortly after 1 p.m. and carried on until 4 p.m. when the horned signaled the fishermen to returned to the cook house for the awards presentations.

Taking the Junior’s Largest fish was Simon Wipf and Most Fish went to Trigg Myshaniuk.

The seniors division’s largest fish went to Robert Nott with his 2.78 pound trout, and the most went to Louise Bohaychuk. Darrell

Pasieka was awarded the first fish caught at the derby.

Although the wind was a bit brisk, everyone seemed to enjoy the pre-Father’s Day event.

IDFGA holds an annual supper in February and much of the funds raised are donated back to the community, and also helps send youth to the Narrow Lake Youth Conservation camp.

S u m m er! It ’s a glorious word that we all can’t wait to be able to say out loud, but it can literally be a fatal word!

Every year we hear and read of cases where children, elderly and pets are left in scorching cars for sometimes hours with no way out. Also, it’s the time of year where wildfires can quickly become out of control and have the potential to wipe out entire towns.

I know, this is a topic I write about every year because I feel as though it needs to be reiterated every year at this time.

So far our summer hasn’t been all that hot, but that can change in a blink of an eye and the dangers that come along with it. It’s disturbing to think that with so much information out there about the effects of heat and hot, dry summer days many people still make the mistake of leaving their loved ones (furry ones included) in cars and do not take care and caution when it comes to fire hazards.

I am not writing this to point fingers or to put the blame on anyone, but to try and get the word out there regarding these

dangers; it is important to stress the fact that heat does kill and while our fire index is at a moderate level at the moment it too can change quickly to a high risk.

The best way to keep your loved ones safe, whether it is a child, an elderly person or a precious pet is to be vigilant. Hyperthermia due to overheating is one of the leading causes of child vehicular non-impact deaths in Canada and the United States, and it needs to be brought to the surface.

Some ways to help prevent a vehicular heat-related death is to follow some pretty basic guidelines. Under no circumstances should you ever leave any child, disabled person or elderly person in a car who is unable to get out of the car themselves or unable to put down the windows. Always make sure your car is locked to prevent children from entering your car and getting trapped inside without your knowledge.

As for your pets, I know I love taking my dog with me when I go places, and while we can’t bring our pet into every store, there are ways to help keep them safe. If you can’t bring your furry friend into the store use your remote start and have the temperature set on air conditioning to help keep them cool it can save their life. Even with the car running and air conditioning on you should run out to your vehicle every 10 -15 minutes

to check on them. If your vehicle doesn’t have the option of air conditioning and it is hot outside, there is a pretty simple solution, leave your pet at home.

About Forest fires, while most are started by lightening many are caused by human error, and we certainly do not want a repeat of Fort Mac or Slave Lake, so remember to follow some pretty simple guidelines to help prevent forest fires such as the ones listed on www.borealforest.org.

Check local regulations regarding permit requirements and “burn ban” restrictions.

These are available from your municipality, fire department or department of natural resources. They may include: Obtaining a burning permit for burning grass, brush, slash or other debris in or within a prescribed distance of forest land.

A campfire permit and the landowner’s permission for an open campfire, cooking fire or bonfire in or near forest land. A work permit for any work in forest land involving two or more people. Burn only natural vegetation or untreated wood products.

Burn piles should be at least 50 feet from structures and 500 feet from any forest slash.

Clear the area around the burn pile of any flammable debris. Keep firefighting equipment handy - a connected water hose

Power saws must have a proper muffler and be accompanied by a round point shovel or fire extinguisher. Cars, trucks, and machinery must have proper exhaust systems when operated in or near forest land. Exhaust spark arresters are a requirement on certain machines and lastly know your local emergency telephone number if a fire becomes uncontrollable.

Let’s all do our best to make this a safe and happy summer.

It is the kind of thing that can start rather innocently or unexpectedly. You may get a notice it’s going to happen… like a train whistle.

Look out, something i s c o m i n g yo u ’r e going to have to deal with and there isn’t anything you can do about it. It might just drop into your lap out of the clear blue sky… you weren’t expecting to be on your rear

end looking up at said blue sky but you are there anyway, pondering the shape of a cloud that two seconds before you were completely oblivious to. Your Rorschachian response could depend whether you first got a bruised tailbone out of the whole deal. If not…’Oh, what a pretty cloud.’

Ahh, life’s little changes of direction… don’t you just love them?

A seasoned Vermilionite would remember the old days when the detour du jour was a train blocking the tracks of old Highway 41 and you had to scoot around almost to ‘Vertec’ or half way to Claysmore and all you had to say was ‘Train’ when you arrived late and everyone just shrugged ’Ok’. They all got the joke because it had been a fact of life, they had used it themselves, maybe even more than once day it seemed like at that time.

About two weeks ago we got a notice that our little hangman’s noose of a road

into our area of the subdivision was going to have the culvert on the creek replaced.

Yes…40+ years later it had outlived its lifespan and when there is only one way in and one way out there better be a detour for it because next thing you know we’re looking at a ‘BRIDGE OUT’ sign and a chasm where the road used to be. Construction the quintessential metaphor for Canadian summer if there ever was one.

Those changes of direction certainly are interesting too…not sure if all us feel that way but driving around on the little temporarily built side road had me thinking we Albertan’s might be all having the same thoughts, like we are involuntarily over on that little gravel side road at the moment, looking over from the driver’s wheel at where we think we should be on the paved ‘Prosperity Road’ and hoping we join back up with it rather sooner than later.

I suppose we all want to get from Point

A to Point B on the prosperity train… usually as quickly as possible.

The journey between those points though usually less a straight line and a bit more circuitous than you expect.

A cousin of my wife’s visiting us from the ‘Left Coast’ once had asked me a thought provoking question about focusing only on the Point A and B and not really experiencing all the points in between. Not sure if I have yet to satisfactorily answer that question to myself but I’m sure it has something to do with whether by design, chance or procrastination…enjoy the road being taken even at those times where you aren’t where you haven’t planned to be.

We all managed to end up in the little detour called Canada after all. It’s really not such a bad road to be on.

Fresh Ranch Salad Dressing

Summer has arrived, and with it comes barbeque cooking and lots of salads celebrating Canada’s 150 birthday. A favourite salad dressing is Ranch. Here is a little history on the creation of Ranch salad dressing. A plumber contractor in Alaska during the early 1950s was tasked with the job of also being the cook for a crew of working contractors.

During this time this plumber aka the Cook came up with a recipe for salad dressing that was such a big hit with the crew, that the men were happy to eat their salad. That Cook was Steve Henson, who later moved to California in 1954 and purchased his dream, the Hidden Valley Ranch. He and his wife Gayle operated it as a guest ranch. Steve’s dress-

ing recipe is used as the house dressing, and it is now being called “ranch dressing.” It was so popular that guests frequently wanted to buy it. In an effort to satisfy an ever increasing demand for his dressing, he and Gayle begin selling the spice mixture as a package, to guests and local stores. It was the Hidden Valley Ranch dressing that kept the guest ranch afloat.

Fast forward to 1972 when Gayle and Steve sell the rights to their Hidden Valley Ranch dressing to the Clorex chemical company for eight million dollars. Clorex is best known for its bleach, Pine-Sol, and Liquid-Plumr. Clorex, then figured out how to alter the recipe so that it would have a 150 day, unrefrigerated shelf life in the grocery store. Gone is the list of simple ingredients such as fresh buttermilk, mayo, onion, herbs, salt, and pepper. The most recent ingredients list includes xanthan gum, phosphoric

All Roads Lead To Calgary Stampede

After many months of hard work and dedication, chuckwagon drivers are getting ready for their most competitive time of year. Local drivers from both the CPCA and WPCA competed at the Wainwright Stampede and at the Guy Weadick Days rodeo in High River.

Kurt Bensmiller said he was delighted to win the Guy Weadick Days for his first time on June 25.

Driving for Hard Knox Brewery and AIC Construction Ltd outfits along with his outriders Rory Gervais and Shawn Calf Robe, Bensmiller took the championship

after posting the best 4-day aggregate time of 5:01.77.

Bensmiller came into the night with a big 1.31 second lead, but just hung on to win the championship by a mere 15 onehundredths of a second over Kirk Sutherland. Luke Tournier, Rick Fraser and Layne MacGillivray were also in the top five overall in the aggregate standings.

“I could not of done it without the support of everyone; sponsors, fans and family. The real stars of course are the horses that love every minute of their jobs,” said Bensmiller.

Dewberry’s Dallas Dyck said he was delighted with his win at the Wainwright

Stampede Dash for Cash, accompanied by his outriders Sandy Mckenzie and Logan Pethick.

“It has been my best season to date.

It’s my goal to get into the top eight at Calgary Stampede this year. It’s been a great year so far, I didn’t change anything except the feeding, and that seems to be working pretty well,” said Dyck.

Chance Bensmiller ended up in 3rd place on the Sunday at Wainwright Stampede.

“It was an eventful weekend to say the least with Wagon malfunctions and finding the right combinations of horses but we were very happy with our time to wrap

up the weekend,’ said Chance.

Chance had luck on his side when he left for the track for his Point Wagon Race in Heat 8.

Chance had to start pulling back on the horses on the backstretch as he was on fire racing to the finish line. He noticed a “pop” and could feel that the reach had separated from the “bunkhouse” (which holds the wagon together).

Chance and his horses Tank, Bully, Burt and Rev came back to the barns without being injured and the Wagon was fixed for the final day in Wainwright.

Chance will make his third appearance at the Calgary Stampede this year.

Vermilion River 4-H Outdoor Club Report Submitted

The Vermillion River 4-H Outdoor Club enjoyed an awesome year packed with fun activities.

Our canine project focused on agility, obedience, grooming, and playing games. On some occasions they made braided tug toys for their dogs. Their achievement day was on May 21 at Lakeland College, where they showed their agility, obedience and showmanship.

The survival project enjoyed numerous activities putting their survival skills to use. from winter camp with ice fishing, orienteering, fire safety, and cooking some very interesting, mostly delicious food on the fire along with several Jiffy Pops. They built multi-purpose walking sticks and slingshots to add to their survival gear. The survival members ended the year with an epic camp out at Mistahiya.

Despite all the rain, the weather was in their favor for the shooting member’s M o n d ay s h o o t a t t h e g u n r a n g e .

Members focused on safety while trying out clay shooting, target shooting, archery, and knife throwing. They practiced their shooting skills with 22 caliber handguns and rifles, shotguns and some high-powered rifles. Members particularly enjoyed the select shoots.

They ended with an achievement day shoot on May 29 at the Vermilion gun range.

Next year we will be adding snowmobiling to our project list.

In December our Club had a number of members who went to the regional volleyball fun tournament at J R Robins o n . Fo r o u r C h r i s t m a s p a r t y we went tobogganing and built shelters.

Members also went to Kinosoo Ridge for skiing. In February we volunteered at the food bank and we helped clean ditches on Highway 619 in May. We got the unique chance to pick artichokes for Lakeland College and most of our members enjoyed it. We had a club fundraiser barbecue sponsored by Main

T h i s we e ke n d Ve g r ev i l l e’s 4 4t h Annual Pysanka Festival is on--July 7 to 9 at the Vegreville Fair Grounds.

With five grandstand shows over the weekend, you will see some spectacular per formances by Ukraine’s Darmohrai, Todaschuk Sisters from Manitoba, Cheremosh, and Viter Ukrainian Dancers & Folk Choir and others. Grandstand Shows are only $25, see grandstand lineups on the Festival website.

A busy Multiplex houses the Cultural Showcase stage all three days, which will see a number of amateur dancers, vocalists and instrumentalists per forming. The stage opens at 11

a.m. daily. On Friday, Craig Repchuk and The Diamonds Band will be on the band showcase, and we hope to see a Kids Kolomeyka at 6 p.m. Be sure to bring your little dancers to show off their dance moves!

Dance competitions are back! Starting on Saturday at 11 a.m., you are free to come watch solos and duets compete for dance medals. Competitions will be approximately three hours, with the Cultural Showcase stage continuing shor tly after ward.

Food and drinks are available at this venue, as the Multiplex also houses the Beer Gardens! This venue is free admission.

2017 VES Grade Six Farewell

The families of 57 Grade 6 graduates gathered at Vermilion Elementary School (VES) to congratulate them as they were awarded their certificates of completion on June 29.

Processional music played as the students entered in their finest attire; girls donned in frills and curls and boys in slick dress shirts.

Buffalo Trails Public School Division Trustee Jim King congratulated the students on moving on to Junior High, and Trustee Bernie Huedepohl followed with congratulations on behalf of the board.

“You now have the foundation built to your education and the years coming up may be the most exciting times of your lives. No one can stop you from learning,

and have a great summer,” said Huedepohl.

A few of the Grade 6 students emceed the event, and Principal, Michelle Webb, shared her remarks towards the students whom she has spent the last numbers of years with. She acknowledged their growth, confidence, and proficiency in becoming amazing citizens around the school and in the community. She went on to say that the Grade 6 students had embodied the VES mantra, ‘Be the best you can be,’ and encouraged them to remember their strengths and talents.

“I believe you can overcome all obstacles and achieve whatever you put your mind to.

As you enter grade 7, I suggest maintaining your positive attitude, supporting one another, and continuing to try your best.

Each one of you will leave a mark on the world as you have on VES,” said Webb.

Mr. Clampitt and Mr. Per ak i s fro m t h e L i o n’s C l u b International presented the Grade 1 students with Canadian Flags on June 22. The students were excited to accept the flags and to learn a bit more about our country and the history of our flag.

On June 28, the Grade 1 students used those flags to take a Canada 150 photo with all the students from VES. Grade 2 students had a great time exploring the Ukrainian Village on June 23. Through a variety of activities and buildings, they experienced life of long ago. They even witnessed role-players demonstrating and explaining what life was like in the past. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make this day possible.

Also on June 23, the Grade 3 students went to the Telus World of Science. They participated in a Hearing and Sound workshop and a Thrill Rides workshop. In the Thrill Rides workshop, the students needed to build a roller coaster with a certain number of foam tubing lengths and tape. They

needed to make sure their marble got to the end of their roller coaster with enough speed and momentum. They needed to incorporate a hill, a curve and a loop in their roller coaster. They also watched a 3D IMax film on orangutans and elephants in danger.

The Grade 5 students ventured to the Vermilion Provincial Park on June 23 for a day of learning and fun. They arrived at 11:00, had a quick lunch and were met by Conservation Officer, Gary Walsh, at 11:30. They split into two groups with one going on a nature hike with Mr. Walsh, and the other going down to the Vermilion River Reservoir for a river study. The nature hike was a narrated tour of the native plants of the park. The river study featured looks at Predacious Diving Beetle Lar vae, leeches, and a host of other insects. After about an hour, the groups switched places. At 1:30, they went to the spray park, and some enjoyed a game of soccer as well. A special thank you to Mr. Walsh and the parent volunteers who made the day fantastic.

in running, jumping, and throwing events. Kindergarten and Grade 1 and 2 students also had a mini version of track and field with hurdles, ball throwing, soccer kicking, tug-of-war and frisbee throwing making up the majority

Volunteers from the East Central Housing Society will be hosting the 2nd Annual BIG Gap 100 Wagon Trek & Trail Ride on July 15, at the Gooseberry Lake Rodeo Grounds.

The committee has worked for over 10 years raising funds for the new Community and Seniors Recreation Centre located next to the new lodge in Consort. The centre is currently in use with seniors playing cards every Tuesday, and regular bookings for the conference room, main hall, commercial kitchen, and outdoor patio. Last year, the committee held the BIG GAP 100 commemorating the Big Gap Stampede that ran from 1916 – 1919 at the Big Gap in the Neutral

Second Annual BIG GAP 100 Hills.

The range of hills with elevation up to 2,900 feet above sea level created a natural amphitheatre for the large outdoor show that featured wild rodeo events and elaborate wild-west plays. Nearly 15,000 people travelled up to 200 miles, and according to Betty Coulton’s ‘The Great Lone Land’, prominent guests included Premier of Alberta Charles Stewart, Minister of Agriculture Duncan Marshall, Mayor of Edmonton Joseph A. Clark, Ribstone MLA J.G. Turgeon, and Chief White Elk. Even with a low population in the area, many local residents feel it is important to keep western heritage alive and through events like these, they are able to celebrate

“Honestly, my favourite part was getting to ride through the hills on a horse for an entire day!” said 12-year-old Connor Warrington who also enjoyed having the opportunity to see a young local blacksmith forging during the 2016 BIG GAP 100 heritage events.

The Wagon Trek & Trail Ride Fundraiser will cover over 12 miles of scenic enjoyment beginning and ending at the Gooseberry Lake Rodeo Grounds. All riders must have signed waivers on file to be registered. These forms can be found online at biggap100.com.

A continental breakfast will be served before heading out, and a bag lunch or pre-ordered Subway lunch will be had on the trail. At 4 p.m. the concession and beer gardens will be open with supper being

served from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The selection of western heritage events will continue into the evening. This year, includes a best period costume award, best homemade jam contest, bannock, butter, and ice cream, live music, ranch skills, demonstrations and more.

Pre-registration will take place from 7 – 9 p.m. on July 14, with the option of camping overnight, or from 7:30 – 8:30 a.m. on July 15. Trail ride fees are $100 per adult, $50 per child 7 – 12, and 6 and under free. Western heritage events will begin at 3 p.m. on July 15, and can be registered for separately from the trail ride if necessary for $35 standard including heritage events and supper, $20 youth 7 – 12, and 6 and under free.
