Credit Union Golf Tournament

Even funnel cloud warnings in the region didn’t dull the charity spirit of the 17th Annual Vermilion Credit Union Golf Tournament on June 9, at the Vermilion Golf and Country Club.

Seventy-six golfers registered for the tournament, with every participant receiving a door prize donated by local businesses. According to CEO Dave Eremko, 60 corporate sponsors helped make the tournament successful once again.

Golfers enjoyed 18 holes (or most of them until the weather became worse), and extra excitement was found with a liquor raffle, leisure raffle, hole in one challenge, and golf pong located throughout the course. Participants also enjoyed a complimentary breakfast as well as a hot dog lunch provided by the Credit Union.

“With three holes left, we saw funnel

clouds and decided to turn back for our own safety. It was a fun day had by all with support towards a great cause, and a lot of wonderful people along with it,” said Candice Anderson who sponsored and participated.

The recipients for the 2017 Credit Union Charity Golf Tournament were the Derwent Fire Department, Friends of Vermilion Health Centre, and the Vermilion Heritage Park Community Oven Project. According to Credit Union representative, Trina Fisher, volunteers from the recipient organizations helped out during the day, as well as the several dedicated Credit Union staff members.

Excitement was in the air at St. Jerome’s Catholic School on June 8, as staff members, students, special guests and dignitaries and members of the community gathered at the gymnasium for the Grand Opening of the newly modernized school.

Emcees Tenille Chase and Ethan Campbell carried a humorous, cheerful tone throughout the morning telling jokes and listing the top 10 most memorable moments during the construction process.

“The number one most memorable moment was seeing everyone work together to make this beautiful building,” said Campbell.

Father Roger opened the grand opening celebration with the Prayer of St. Francis followed by the singing of O’ Canada

by Jennifer Pederson; as well Father Paul Kavanagh delivered a blessing from the Edmonton Archdiocese and blessed the school with holy water.

Principal Allan Chase graced the stage to give thanks to all who were involved in the process of the project and to the members of the community.

“It’s great to see everyone here today.

I want to thank you so much for coming out and sharing in this celebration. It has been a long and sometimes arduous jour-

ney. On behalf of the staff and students of St. Jerome’s thank you all for coming out,” said Chase.

The modernization of the school began when the plans were complete and the project was awarded in the fall of 2014 with construction beginning in April 2017.

“Today is the conclusion of a massive project which started 2.5 years ago. It has been exciting, confusing and frustrating, but ultimately a very rewarding experience,” said Chase.

Bruce MacDuff, Mayor of the Town of Vermilion was in attendance and addressed the attendees of the ceremony.

Lea Park Rolls On Despite Rain

No one had planned for the rain and thunderstorm that hit Lea Park on the opening night of this year’s rodeo, but the show still went on despite the wash out conditions. Cowboys slid in the muck and the dir t adding to the entertainment and delighting the

crowds. “ The storm rolled right through.

We never stop the show unless it’s a tornado or an absolute disaster. It’s been an excellent rodeo even though mother nature hasn’t been the best. It quit spitting rain on Saturday at noon and we had a good crowd. The rain can put a dampener on things but you

just have to roll with it, that’s life and you have to do the best you can with the hand you’re dealt,” said Lea Park Rodeo President Lloyd Gray.

Lea Park recorded the highest mark ever in Saddle Bronc riding on Friday night when Clay Elliott marked a 90 on his horse Franklyn’s Evening Mist.

“Elliott will be one to watch at this

year’s Calgary Stampede for sure! He was the biggest highlight here this weekend. We also recorded a lot of other high marks in the 80s,” added Gray.

Rodeos have been held at the Lea Park location as far back as the late 1920s, with the Lea Park Rodeo being held there for the last 63 years.

Small Crowd At Co-op Information Meeting

The management for Cornerstone Co-op made a presentation with financial statements for the past two years at the Elk’s Hall on June 7.

The Statement of Net Savings (Loss) and Statement of Retained Deficit for the 13 month period ended January 31, 2017 showed that the Eastalta Co-op had a deficit of $652,602 and that the Eastalta Co-op statement of cash flows for the 13 month period ended January 31, 2017 bank indebtedness was $1,043,580.

At the end of the meeting, only one question was asked by a member of the community who said that they were “a member since 1963.

Vermilion Cornerstone Food Store Manager Mike Gaudet said that is was disappointing that there was such a small

turn out at the meeting.

“Where are all the people who have been complaining here tonight?! It’s a pity they couldn’t make it to this meeting to see all the information laid out in front of them,” said Gaudet.

Before its amalgamation Eastalta Co-op included the areas of Mannville, Dewberry, Wainwright, Vermilion and Provost.

Cornerstone General Manager Graham Getz said the economic downturn had the biggest influence on the 2017 end of year deficit.

“The $100,000 winnings from the Fuel Up To Win competition does not come out of the Eastalta funds it is from federated Co-op funds. The costs of the new Co-op building in Vermilion, the face lift in Dewberry and the repair to the Vermilion Bargain Store roof were all contributing factors to the end of year deficit,” said Gaudet.

Valley Lodge Old Wing Gone

The old wing of the Vermilion Valley Lodge was torn down by the contractors on June 6.

The Vermilion Valley Lodge, which began construction the end of March, is replacing the three oldest wings of the lodge, which were built in 1960.

With the development of phase one in progress, construction crews are busy, and work is underway. The new building will include 52, 350 square foot, rooms, which will each have a small kitchenette and

walk-in showers; four will be one bedroom couple’s suites.

There will also be two resident bathing rooms, two bathing assist rooms, new home care office, kitchen, dining room, commercial laundry, staff area, chapel/ gathering room, and a living room with a pool table, big screen television, lounge area, and library.

“The project cost is increasing a little bit, but the total cost is now at around $14.1 million. We are looking at being complete by January 2019,” said Sheri Heller, the Vermilion District Housing Foundation CEO.

Eco Buffer Planted

An Eco-buffer for pollinators was planted on Larry and Rosanne Bingham’s farm off Highway 41 south of Vermilion on June 7.

A large turnout of Volunteers traveled to the farm to plant between 500 and 600 plants for the 1st multi-function eco-buffer demonstration project for Alternative Land Use Services (ALUS).

Chris Elder, the ALUS Coordinator for the County of Vermilion River, said that together with Agroforestry & Woodlot Extension Society​ (AWES), they worked out a plan to do a multipurpose and multispecies eco-buffer which aims to attract pollinators, birds, and wildlife.

“The eco-buffer will produce flowers at different times of the year; it will produce berries from fruiting shrubs. It will provide shelter from the wind and is helpful with the soil. It provides habitat and a food source,” said Elder.

Guest Speaker Luke Wonneck from Agroforestry and Woodlot Extension Society (AWES) spoke about the function and importance of eco-buffers and shelterbelts, how to design and create effective habitats for pollinators and wildlife, tree and shrub care, plus planting tips.

“We plan to re-establish a natural habitat and look at how to continue care after the trees and shrubs are in the ground,” said Wonneck.

Landowner Larry Bingham said he is pleased to partner with ALUS.

“We started the project in 2012. There were 18 acres planted to native grasses back then, and we had this little piece of land left over, so we decided to link up with AWES group,” said Bingham.

Elder said ALUS ‘s mission is to provide direct support to a national network of farmers and ranchers delivering ecosystem services in their communities, including clean water, carbon sequestration, erosion control, flood mitigation, pollinator support and wildlife habitat.

“Community-developed and farmerdelivered, ALUS sustains agriculture, wildlife, and natural spaces one acre at a time,” said Elder.

Nothing like a beautiful warm sunrise, no wind with every bird singing their spring serenade, even the pups came out of their dog houses to lay in the grass to silently enjoy it.

This past weekend was a great weekend, spent an awesome morning with the team, then an awesome evening with my wife, it was our 40th anniversary, I made a reservation in the city for supper. But it was such a nice day Roxanne decided we should go fishing instead…hence why we have been married for 40 years, I didn’t argue that point and headed to the garden to dig some worms.

Having four big dogs helping you dig for worms sounds like an ideal scenario but although a lot of dirt was flying the worm picking didn’t work out so well, thank goodness they got warm and decided to go for a swim in the duck pond.

A s eve n i n g n e ar e d I l o ad e d u p the truck and without even thinking I prepared Miss Oohohh’s seat and bed, Roxanne looked at me and asked: ”can we just have a quiet evening without the “kids?” well, since it was our 40th I have to say it sure was quiet and enjoyable. But I have to admit I still missed the “kids” a little, although the fish were not biting that well, they were jumping continually, some shooting two, three feet into the air. It was quite a show,

Fresh garden rhubarb is now ready to eat. Rhubarb is one of the first fruits available on the Canadian prairies and prairie cooks have come up with lots of ways to use it: there are rhubarb pies, rhubarb crisps, rhubarb jam, rhubarb relish, cobblers and cakes. We think of rhubarb as a fruit it, but it is actually classified as a vegetable. Several years ago we lost our patch of rhubarb to an army of ants that destroyed it. Now we have a new variety of rhubarb on the farm that seems to be less tart than the previous one.

Even if you do not grow rhubarb, you can usually pick some up at the farmers market, as it is in season right now.

Always remember that the leaves of the rhubarb plant are poisonous. Rhubarb is mildly laxative. Research show that it may be beneficial for diabetes as it mimics the action of insulin, allowing the sugar to enter the cell, where it may be burned instead of circulating in

the activity evidently due to bug hatch from the water, also the reason why the fish were not biting great, but we did great and brought home a fresh fish fry supper. Of course as to be expected my awesome wife caught the first and the most, something I have gotten used to in the 40 years we have fished together, the lack of fish biting gave us time to sit back, relax, talk and reflect on the past 40 years.

I did also get her a set of sparkly earrings in the shape of hearts with a red ruby in the center that dance shimmer and shine on their own; they dance continually almost as if some magic force. Ruby being the 40th wedding anniversary stone and theme, hunting for a Ruby was a little out of my reach, however with the 50th wedding anniversary being golden with a gold theme, I can handle that. That will give me plenty of time to go gold panning and exploring, finding enough gold dust one flake at a time until I can make her something special, the perfect adventure and excuse to get out there. Humour aside It was a great day and way to spend the day with the little city girl I fell in love with over 40 years ago, and now she is stuck with me at least until our golden 50th as you can see I have big plans.

When We arrived home as the sun set behind the mountains to the west, I let Miss Oohohh out of her kennel, and she ran straight to the back of the truck demanding to see these fish she missed out on, she knew. I had a great weekend with the wife and our new little 3” wide version family with the “kids” of course being

all the pups, our real kids, all grown up wished us the best and knew a quite anniversary was our best gift.

Speaking of new family’s, spring being the time of new birth for all our wildlife, just a few days ago I was driving at sunrise along a rural road near our home and along the edge of a new green growth in a farmer’s field was a newborn fawn laying there. I stopped to admire the little critter through my binoculars for a minute or two and continued on my way before disturbing too much; now many would think why I wouldn’t stop to help this new little-abandoned whitetail deer fawn.

Something I see on social media that several people have already done, good people with good intentions, coming to the aid of a baby animal abandoned in a field. However, that is the worst thing one can do, as it’s by nature’s design.

The newborn as with the whitetail fawn are born totally scentless, the momma cleans all scent after birth and being scentless combined with its little spots a camouflage, it is almost invisible to predators. So by nature’s design the mother is not abandoning the fawn, she with a lot of scent moves off a safe distance from the fawn to protect it, although one can’t see the momma she is nearby and very aware.

When the fawn is just days older and can walk good enough to follow momma to safety, then they will join up, and the fawn will be by her side until fully grown. So just a reminder as with most baby critters with spring, although they may look abandoned or all alone,

almost always that is not the case, also in many cases with some animals it can be life threatening to you.

As with the case of moose and their calves, you do not want to get between a moose and her calf even if that cute new baby moose calf looks all alone; cow moose can be more dangerous than bears. Many cases have been repor ted where a cow moose have attacked people and trampled them into the ground like gopher highway pizza, I personally know of such a case.

This occurred in the fall when the calf was far from being newborn, a fellow bowhunter silently making his way thru a thick willow bush happened upon a bedded moose calf, before he could back off the momma cow moose hit him like a truck. He was lucky the cow moose went easy on him and only broke a collar bone and bruised a few ribs, the cow moose was only protecting her young as most wild animals will do.

I’d like to think that anyone good at putting together a story would also be good at having opinions.

Not that this column is so much about a particular opinion, but that thought in general.

When the thought of taking on this writing opportunity first took hold, there was some initial trepidation as to whether there was enough creative ground (of mine) to mine for decent stories to tell or some opinions

Vermilion Town Council met June 6, discussing a range of municipal matters including the upcoming waste water project, the RCMP report, and youth business by-law.

The waste water project had received recent information about new government money that will become available if they were willing to move ahead

by June 9. The $8 million project is

at the ends of the curve to ‘write those off,’ as it were (no pun intended) and go with the majority of the bell and not ‘rock the boat.’ Of course when it comes to drama (and what audience doesn’t love that)… polar opposites usually supply the greatest amount of conflict and the most fodder for spectacle. Reality TV sure uses that as its cheap and easy modus operandi.

One thing that writing (of stories) does though is offer an opportunity to create a picture for others to see, then describe to that audience a place to stand and an angle to frame that picture with in order to see it from the author’s perspective. If you can do it well, there are idioms that describe that situation, such as seeing something ‘in a good light’ or ’putting a good spin on it’. When it comes to the one to many medium of a newspaper…it is the ideal to be looking for I would like to think if you are the author. I guess when it comes to being the author of my own opinions...I wouldn’t mind following in the footsteps of

worthy of putting to a page for public scrutiny. “Why me?” Do I deserve a pulpit just for the simple fact of being willing to stand on one and yak away week after week? I mean it’s one thing to angrily mutter your opinions on a higher power in your garage after pounding a finger with a ball peen hammer…quite another the moment your thumb is smashed to turn and realize your garage door is open and you have a large crowd gathered of eager listeners (who all apparently have schadenfreude).

We all have them of course…our own storylines and opinions that is…as each of us comes with our own way of looking at the world and our journey through it. Not all opinions are going to be agreeable to everyone of course…I learned enough from a statistics class to know that in every crowd of any number you are going to have some that are with you and others at entirely opposite ends of the spectrum. When you look at it coolly and mathematically,…it can be somewhat tempting with the ones

expected to be covered 50 per cent federally, 40 per cent provincially, and 10 per cent municipally. A motion was moved and carried to have the project move forward.

The RCMP report offered by Sergeant Boehr included statistics from January – May. Having been short staffed in the past, Boehr said two recruits had finished their training and were now able to work individually in the community.

my Dad who was enough of a muse to get me thinking of doing this to begin with. At some point talking about history, things, and places leads to talking about current events…which leads to a how you see those events, in your perspective. My Dad wasn’t always on the mark on that but most times you could understand the picture and where he was coming from. To be fair, that is about all you could ask for.

I certainly appreciate the feedback I’ve been given on my column so far (positive)…and thankful at times it is not a blog where every thought gets endlessly picked apart like the wings off flies in comments by anonymous trolls. As far as picking battles…this one doesn’t seem so bad… at least not yet. I suppose I could sum up my thoughts on opinions with a quote commonly (or mistakenly) attributed to Winston Churchill: “You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life.”.

East-West Carriage Driving Trials

The East-West Chapter of the Alberta Carriage Driving Association held Driving Trials in Vermilion on June 10 – 11.

Drivers and their horses competed in events including dressage, cones, and a marathon.

“There are different levels of competition, and it is mainly about conditioning

your horse. It’s all about getting better. I think this particular show is a good learning opportunity. New drivers or drivers that like to bring their new horses come because it offers a really relaxed environment,” said Tammy Hampel, from McLaughlin, who has been driving 17 years.

She went on to say that though she never did, some people grow up in the

sport, learning from their grandparents.

She also mentioned that some competitors find it less intimidating than riding.

“It’s one way of doing one more thing with your horse, and you can see horses from miniatures to drafts competing in the same game. I like horses period.

When my kids were little, it was an activity that I could take them with me and safely and comfortably supervise them,”

said Hampel.

The East-West Chapter held a silent and live auction at the event, and hosted a banquet and games in the evening.

Participants enjoyed the social event, as well as spending time with their horses.

“It’s so much fun! The cones offer a bit of an adrenaline rush and the marathon is challenging,” said Christine King from Irma.

Special memories were shared as the Vermilion Outreach School celebrated their 2017 Graduation on June 2, at the School of Hope.

Principal, Derek Collins introduced the graduates, Lance Larmond, Nicole TalbotJones, Maisie Mansfield, and Keera Forster, and Christian Duzek (missing from ceremonies).

Families enjoyed a meal catered by Lasting Impressions, and MLA Dr. Richard Starke gave special congratulations.

Jim King, Buffalo Trails Public School Division Trustee, congratulated the students on their efforts and hoped that they enjoy their summer.

“This school is dear to mine and my wife’s heart because my son graduated from here,” said King.

Dwayne Zarichny, East Central Alberta Catholic School Division’s Assistant Superintendent, referenced an Earl Nightingale’s ‘Acres of Diamonds’ story in which an African farmer goes out in tireless search of diamonds only to find out after selling his own land, that it had been loaded with them.

Graduates received gifts from VIBE, a jar of messages from staff to open when they felt the need, letters from members of their family, and congratulations from MLA Dr. Richard Starke and the school board along with their certificates of completion.

O n J u n e 1, a l l Grade 3 classes par ticipated in a safety course that covered Grade 3 curricular outcomes. Don Doherty, Occupational Health and Safety Coordinator for BTPS, taught the students what first aid was and what to do in case of an emergency. They also learned what to do in case of a nosebleed and how to bandage a wound, as well as how to do abdominal thrusts and use the AED machine.

They would like to thank Mr. Doherty for taking the time to teach these important skills.

The Grade 5 students went to the TELUS World of Science in Edmonton on June 1. They broke into two groups, with half working in the robotics lab and the other half touring the four galleries, having lunch, and enjoy-

ing a quick visit to the gift shop. Everyone got back together for the new IMAX film ‘Extreme Weather’ in 3D. They then broke back into the two groups to do what the other group did earlier in the day. The robotics lab was very hands on and students thoroughly enjoyed their time in it. It was great to see so many parents able to attend this field trip.

Our last assembly took place on June 6 with an acknowledgement of the land we occupy.

Mr. Neil Blue and Corporal Buckingham were present to give out Rural Crime Watch poster contest winners their certificates and cheques.

The winners were Atlas Clark, Linden Adams, Danielle Archibald, Cale Meissner, Taelor Nelson, Callie Westling, Chloe Fillion, Addison Young, Ian Munro, Kirsten Selte, Jenna Stewart, Jada Sanford, and Chloe Maxwell.

As well, Kindergarten students sang a song about respect and each spoke about a way

they could be respectful.

On June 5, Mr. Bates, principal of JR Robson School, came to VES to talk with the Grade 6 students about what Grade 7 will look like for them next year. The Grade 6 students then walked over to JR on June 7 for a mock day of Grade 7. They had the opportunity to meet the teachers who will instruct them next year, have a tour of the school, and enjoy a lunch there.

The last week for students to return all library books is June 16; however students will still be able to complete AR quizzes with their personal and classroom books. Our students have been working hard to earn AR points this year. The 20,000 points goal is well on its way to being a reality. Students are able to earn points up to the end of the day on June 23.

June 28 will be our AR celebration day.

The schedule for the day will be as follows:

9:30-10:30 round one of games, 10:45 - 11:45 assembly to award prizes and celebrate our clubs, 11:45-1p.m. family picnic where parents join us with their picnic lunch for their family (meet in the gym first), 1:15 - 2:45 round two of games. Thank you to the Vermilion Credit Union for their support with this program, to all the parents who are supporting their children in reading to earn their AR points, and to the amazing students at VES who are Being The Best They Can Be each and every day.

St. Jerome’s School News

The community of St. Jerome’s, with many dignitaries gathered for the Grand Opening Celebration on Thursday, June 8. Student Council Members Tenille Chase and Ethan Campbell were the MC’s for the event. Father Roger led us in the Prayer of St. Francis followed by Jennifer Pederson singing “O Canada”. Father Paul Kavanagh brought blessings from the Edmonton Archdiocese and blessed the school with holy water. Bruce McDuff, Rob Eckert, Paul Young, Debra Klein, Dr. Richard Starke, and Jessica Littlewood all gave messages of congratulations on the beautiful renovations done over the past two years at St. Jerome’s.

Mr. Allan Chase thanked everyone involved with the renovations especially the students and staff for being incredibly flexible for the past two years. He also took the time to remind those gathered how fortunate we are to live in a country and province who value education and the importance of maintaining quality school buildings for all of our students.

Retired Board Trustee, Larry Wasylik, who was instrumental in getting these renovations for St. Jerome’s, was given the honour of “Ringing the Bell” to signify the opening of the school. The celebration ended with the student body led by the Grade 4 and 5 students singing with enthusiasm the school song. After the ceremony dignitaries and community members were given a tour of the newly renovated school.

The High School and Middle Level

students had a beautiful day for their Annual Ball Tournament on Wednesday, June 7.

They headed over to Pioneer Park for a great day of ball. Each team played several games during the day with Mr. Sader’s team winning the High School division and Mr. Wasylik’s team being the Middle Level winners. The students enjoyed hot dogs and juice, which were prepared by Ed Mistal, Ron Roth, Paul Corbiere, Jim Sanson and Joe Maughan, members of the Knights of Columbus.

Congratulations to Anna Ulrich as she achieved her personal best running the 3000m at the Provincial Track and Field Championships placing fourth. She also finished seventh in the 1500m.

The Grade 3 students spent a beautiful day at the Valley Zoo on Tuesday, June 6.

Visiting Lucy the Elephant was the first expe-

rience of their journey followed by breaking into groups and wandering around the zoo until they met up with their Tour Guide, Louie, for the afternoon. Louie shared educational information around the theme of “Feathers, Fur and Scales”. Students were able to handle a snakeskin, arctic fox fur, grizzly claw, and elephant tusk. Louie told the students that items like these ones are donated to the zoo if they have been confiscated at the border. Students also were able to interact with a Baby Python, Russian Tortoise, Armadillo, and a Bluetongued Skink. They ended their zoo visit by spending time at the Petting Zoo area.

Mannville School News Susan Obrigwitch Submitted

Kindergarten has been watching their flower seeds grow, observing and painting apple blossoms and spreading their sunflower seeds at home from their fall sunflower unit. They also planted their grass heads to see how fast grass can grow (and then give it a haircut when it gets too long).

Despite the rain on the ride up the elementary students had a fantastic time at the Children’s Festival on Friday, June 2.

The Grade 1 and 2 classes participated in a Lego design challenge, created an “up-cycle” craft, and watched an amazing light show performance called “Moon Mouse: A Space Odyssey.” Throughout the day many of the students received airbrush tattoos, picture lanyards and participated in several other fun free events.

The Grade 3 and 4 class learned about the lives of the Vikings and made necklaces with their initials using Viking letters. They were entertained with some amazing First Nations and Metis dancing, explored the various venues such Metis weaving, furs

from Fort Edmonton Park, a photo booth and face painting. Their last session was about birch bark canoes. Students learned how they were made and their importance.

The Grade 5 and 6’s enjoyed their day creating a story using only teamwork and lego, creating birch bark canoes and being entertained by Jonathon Burns, a flexible comedian who kept them all entertained!

Mannville School students were invited to attend a Pow Wow at Frog Lake School on June 9. Students from grades 2-7 attended the event. We were excited to be offered this opportunity to learn more

about their traditions and heritage.

Camp Warwa is committed to improving the lives of children through providing experiences in the outdoors. Our grade 9 students are excited to attend camp later this month and experience many outdoor and team building activities. This two day field trip is funded by the fall supper our grade 9 students and their parents provided to our community last fall! Thank you!

April was a slower month for activities for the club to enjoy. They only had Tire recycling and Electronic Recycling to do this month. The club had a good turn out and later went for pizza as a club.

The club held their monthly meeting on May 12 and discussed many things.
