John Stewart Recognized With Honorary Credential

John A. Stewart received an Honorary Bachelor of Applied Business Degree for his years of community service during the Lakeland College Vermilion Campus Convocation Ceremony at the Vermilion Regional Centre on June 2.

John said he was “honoured” to receive the award last Friday and his son Doug Stewart gave an acceptance speech on his behalf.

John’s grandparents settled in Vermilion in 1905, the year Vermilion was established. He was born in Vermilion in 1935.

After attending the University of Alberta and then the University of Montana where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1957, John returned to his hometown of Vermilion and joined Craig Brothers Ltd., where he then immersed himself in the business and the community.

“Like his grandparents and parents, Dad always viewed the college which

was established in 1913 - as one of the cornerstones of this community and region. Each generation of our family has tried to show support for the community which has grown from humble beginnings to the outstanding post-secondary institution it is today. Dad’s proud that two of his grandsons have attended Lakeland,” said Doug.

John had received numerous community awards and recognitions over the years for his years of community service including a Melvin Jones Fellowship. He was a member of the Kinsmen Club and a long time member of the Vermilion Agricultural Society.

In his speech, Doug encouraged graduates to get involved in their community.

“Many of you will be moving to a new town or city. Once you’ve settled into your new job, make the time to get involved.

You can help plan a local event, join a volunteer board or coach a sport’s team.

I know the community and your life - like Dad’s - will be richer in so many ways.”

Celebrating 100 Years Of 4-H

Vermilion and Clandonald 4-H Clubs met at the Vermilion Agricultural Grounds hosting their Interclub Heifer Show on May 28, and their Steer Show and Sale on May 29.

A range of 9 - 18 - year - old members shared their head, heart, hands, and health spirit while showing their prime cattle. The heifer show began with the Cleaver and Yearling Heifer Classes with the top two in each category moving on to the Champion Yearling Heifer Class. The Grand Champion Yearling Heifer went to Zack Rehmann, and Reserve Champion Yearling Heifer went to Nicholas Wasylik.

A Champion Cow/Calf Class was held after the Two and Three Year Old Cow/ Calf Classes. The Grand Champion Cow/ Calf went to Logan Garnier, and Reserve Champion Cow/Calf went to Avery Hickman.

“It takes a lot of time and effort to bring

back last year’s project for a cow/calf project,” said Confirmation Judge, Jayden Payne.

A highlight of the show was the Champion Overall Female Class that saw Grand Overall Female Champion going to Logan Garnier, and Reserve Overall Female Champion going to Zack Rehmann.

Showmanship Classes were also held with judges not only placing the animals but coaching members on their performances throughout the day.

Junior Champion was awarded to Wyatt Jacula, and Junior Reserve Champion was awarded to Noah Jacula. Intermediate Champion was Avary Hickman, and Intermediate Reserve Champion was Kamryn Oddan. The Senior Showmanship Grand Champion was Nicholas Wasylik, and the Senior Showmanship Reserve Champion was Grace Cleland.

“There’s a really talented and natural group of show-people here today,” said Showmanship Judge, Taylor Richards.

In honour of celebrating 100 years of 4-H in Canada, the Vermilion-Clandonald Interclub offered a new HealthHead-Heart-Hand Award this year to one member of each club that displayed outstanding support to fellow members throughout the shows. The Vermilion award went to Cavin Jones, and the Clandonald award went to Austin Axley.

“There’s a lot of 4-H spirit out there,” said Fern Axley.

A couple of younger members shared what they love about being involved in 4-H. “I love how you learn lots of new things and being around the cattle,” said Destinee McGrath, 10.

“I love how you get to interact with all of your friends and members in the club,” said Derian Selte, 10.

Showmanship awards went to juniors Rylan Garnier (1st), and Rylan Lehmann (2nd). Intermediate Showmanship awards went to Logan Garnier (1st), and

Kamryn Oddan (2nd). Senior Showmanship awards went to Justin Chase (1st), and Nicholas Wasylik (2nd).

The top two steers from each weight class vied for the Championship spot which was announced at the sale. The Overall Grand Champion Steer was awarded to Logan Garnier, and the Overall Reserve Champion Steer was awarded to Ashley Jones.

“4-H takes a big commitment. This is cattle country, and these cattle are fit and fed nicely. I like to see the senior members helping others,” said Confirmation Judge, Mick Trefiak.

During the sale, buyers eagerly eyed their choice steer and competed with their bids to support the Vermilion-Clandonald 4-H Interclub.

“They’ve all worked really hard and done well with their calves. We are happy to see them have a successful 4-H year,” said Kim Roberts. See more on next page.

Over 50 Years Of History For Innisfree Minburn 4H Beef

4H members of the Innisfree Minburn beef club were busy preparing for the club’s annual achievement day show and sale which included 15 market steers and one female entry by Logan Nott.

Eac h m e m b er fe d an d c arefully tracked the growth of their steer projects in order to offer buyers a quality beef product at the show and sale on May 31 at the Minburn Ag Society grounds.

The day got underway at 2 p.m. with the market steer competition where each member was judged on showmanship and grooming abilities by judge Brennan Schachtel, as well as on the conformation and quality of the steers as judged by Melissa Hall.

Following the final championship class of steers it was the steer belonging to Tyson Rudolf that took the Grand Champion title which was bought by Cliff Grinde, owner of Viking Auction

Market, who paid a hefty $3 per pound in the evening sale which followed the supper.

Taking reserve champion was Kaylie Anderson with her Black Angus steer which was bought by Agland Vermilion.

Rounding of f the top three spots was first-year member Chase Forsyth who, with the help of senior members, showed off his calf during the sale for buyers. Purchasing Chase’s calf was Rocky Mountain Equipment of Vegreville.

During the supper the club displayed a slide show which revealed history from the more than 50 years of Innisfree Minburn Beef Club members and their projects, of which some members who now have their children in the club.

The club also participates in community incentives including tire recycling and highway clean up, and also helps at a number of community events in the area.

Canada Post Celebrates Canada 150

A maple leaf shaped stamp collection was released on June 1, and Canada Post in Vermilion involved the community by hosting a flower arrangement draw on June 2.

According to Canada Post, each of the 10 stamps in the collection had been revealed separately since April 27, commemorating special Canadian moments since Canada’s centennial. Canada Post assures

that they have never issued stamps in the shape of a maple leaf before.

According to Basia Bosgra, being closed on July 1, Canada Post opted to celebrate one month prior on June 1. She went on to say that Vermilion’s Canada Post was searching for a different way to incorporate the public when they opted to enter customers in a draw for a celebratory red and white flower arrangement.

The lucky winner of the Canada themed flower arrangement was Karen Baker.

Vermilion Heritage Museum Celebrates Canada 150

Community members were eager to appreciate traditional arts and history as they gathered at the Vermilion Heritage Museum who celebrated Canada 150 by hosting a Mural Unveiling on June 3.

Replacing a similar previous mural, the new one included provincial flowers and is expected to last many years.

“The original was painted on corrugated plastic, and the new one is a digi-

tal weather resistant sign material,” said Board of Directors President, Jean Murie.

Board member, Kirby Whitlock assisted the Vermilion Army Cadets as they volunteered to barbecue hot dogs, Smokies, and hamburgers. Whitlock also showed car and history enthusiasts his 1926 Model T that he had just picked up the day before.

The Vermilion Pottery Guild had a selection of traditional handmade pieces available, and a clay demonstration for

people to get the feel of it. Robin Clark volunteered to demonstrate blacksmithing, making artifacts forged of steel. With him, he had a forge and blower, anvil, and swage block, and the necessary tools used to hold, heat, and shape the metal.

“I love the challenge of doing it and seeing the end result. It is interesting because it is limitless what you can make and do. Blacksmithing is becoming a lost or dying trade with few people to keep it going but it’s a tradition that goes back hundreds of years,” said Clark.

People who entered the museum also had their first look at the Thomas Alban Snelgrove WWI display.

“The museum concentrates on historical items being tied to Vermilion. It’s nice to be able to create the display, and have people that will continue to see it,” said Robert Snelgrove.

Included in the display was a sketch from the Glascow Weekly Herald dated November 16, 1918, created by Walter Meller who was the great uncle of Margaret Snelgrove.

It is with mixed emotions that the Rotary Club of Vermilion would like to inform the Vermilion Community that the club will no longer be publishing their Community Calendar. The Club would like the community to know well in advance of the normal summer renewal opportunities and November canvass drive that the Calendar will not be published for 2018.

While we understand the calendar is a

familiar sight throughout the community, the project has become less viable with the decrease in calendar usage. The club is excited to share new projects like the Garage Sale and Canada Flag Project with our supporters.

Now that spring is here, and we are slowly leaning into summer we will all hear how we need to be more vigilant and watch out for our fellow motorist the biker.

With sunny skies and warm temperature, we will see an increase in motorcyclist and cyclist, and we all need to do our part in keeping them safe while they travel our highways and in town roadways.

As a motorist, we need to make ourselves aware that motorcyclists and cyclists are out there and continuously remind ourselves of that fact. We need to remember that motorcycles are smaller than the vehicles we drive and if we are

We need to remember that during night time driving bikers have fewer lights on their bikes which makes it harder for us to see them. We need to remind ourselves to give bikers ample room while we are passing them and to never drive beside them in the same lane; they are entitled to the same space as automobile drivers.

Always remember to check your blind spots at intersections and when changing lanes, so many times bikers are hit because we forget they could be alongside us.

biker. The other day on the way home from Lloydminster I witnessed a biker performing some very unsafe driving practices! He was driving with one hand and at times with no hands on the bars. He was zig-zagging in and out of lanes passing other vehicles and abruptly cutting in front of them without leaving a safe distance between himself and the other vehicles. He was also driving at an unsafe speed as he passed me like I was stopped, and believe me; I was absolutely doing the speed limit.

My son is a biker, and maybe that is why I take notice of the bikers on the road more than some people. I worry each time he goes for a ride. I worry that I may get that knock on the door or phone call someday informing me that he has been in a bike accident. I know what can happen and I talk with him each time he goes out, and

Even just this last week a little girl about 10 years old held a door open for me. I asked her who taught her that kindness. She said “Nobody!” Further on was her mother with a smile.

I ask him to please be a responsible rider and take of himself and others. It’s easy to get out there on the open highway and get caught up in the joy of it all, but safety for all needs to be thought of not just for the motorcyclists.

So I ask both automobile drivers and motorcyclist to take care of each other, respect each other and hopefully, we can all prevent anyone getting that dreaded phone call.

juana along with a modified shotgun and various other items. As a result of the investigation, a warrant has been issued for the arrest of 25-year-old Nicholas Desrochers of Vermilion. Twentyone-year- old Kyla Carrier of Vermilion has also been arrested and charged in connection with this investigation. Allegations against both individuals include possession of marihuana for the purpose of traf ficking and firearms-related offences. This matter remains under investigation and before the courts.

Vermilion RCMP responded to a complaint of a gunshot inside a Vermilion residence. The investigation revealed a male had been manipulating a modified shotgun when it discharged into the floor of the residence. Members were able to

locate the male who had fled the residence. The shotgun was recovered and 25-year-old Grant Davidson of Vermilion has been arrested and charged.

The allegations include various firearms related offences. This matter remains before the courts.

Vermilion RCMP responded to a complaint of a possible impaired driver who had driven her vehicle into the ditch on Highway 16. Members attended and located the vehicle. As a result of the investigation, 24-year-old Aleah Pilon of Vermilion was arrested and subsequently charged. The allegations include impaired operation of a motor vehicle and operation of a motor vehicle while over .08. This matter remains before the courts.

I love spring, a time of re bir th an d renewal the beautiful sights, scents and s o u n d s, t h e c o l or s and the “green explosion” of lush new growth…although somewhat late this year.

According to my logs last year we had full leaves in April on the 21st, one of the earliest years for the green explosion, this year ever ything is a little late, or a lot late as the green explosion didn’t happen for almost a full month this year. But now with recent rains and warm sunshine one can almost watch things grow, my lawn the size of a couple of football fields seems to be growing with a vengeance now, beautiful but a pain in the but t…literally. Even with my new bigger riding mower, it is still a six-hour endeavor, but relaxing by the campfire with all the pups by my side, my frogs and Robins singing along with the Red-winged and Yellowhead Blackbird, it was all worth it.

The pups were quite patient while I cut the grass and slept almost the entire time in the shade of my truck, g et t ing u p o c c asi o nally to have a stretch and a dip in the duck pond.

Although I have a full-size kiddy pool full to the rim in each kennel they much prefer the duck pond, and the antics to go with it, the two young pups now almost as big as Miss Oohohh are I am sure is testing me.

Now the duck pond is a fair jaunt from my shop. However, they will soak up a quarter of the pond run straight to the shop and do a couple of quick laps inside, very evident from the trail of water and tracks.

I have the big overhead door open, and they take that as a hit and run opportunity, which is except for Little Miss Noel, if I am sitting in my big easy chair she will wait to get right beside me and in a cloud of water shake wildly and as I’m cussing run for the hills.

Now I thought this was just that I was in the wrong place at the wrong time the first time, but now I know it is a well thought out devilish game with her as she will seek me out no matter where I am just to shake off the equivalence of a five gallon bucket of water on me.

Now when I see her running off to the duck pond with that smitten smile on her face I only have seconds to find a good hiding place, I have come to a conclusion there is no such place.

Water does something to dogs at times you watch them sluggishly saunter on down to the duck pond like they are half asleep, but after a couple of minutes in the water they are doing summersaults and running around in circles full out.

The biggest thing I have to stop is the visit to the garden to burn circles in it immediately after coming out of the water, I was busy one day, and all four pulled that off that little scenario. They all hit the water, then at the speed of Mock Chicken did a couple laps in the garden and decided to see who could run the fastest in the shop without getting caught. There was mud on everything two feet above the floor; I don’t know how I missed that little adventure, I must have been in one of their kennels as when I saw them … all lying by my truck covered in mud all with that innocent look on their faces.

COUNTY OF MINBURN NO. 27 Roadside Spraying Program The County of Minburn No. 27 Agricultural Service Board will once again be operating a Roadside Spraying Program for the control of noxious weeds and brush in the 2017 season. If you do not wish to have spraying completed adjacent to your property, “DO NOT SPRAY BETWEEN SIGNS” signs are available from the Agricultural Service Board office. There is no charge for these signs however landowners are responsible to erect and maintain them on their property.

A reminder, however, that if a landowner does not want adjacent road allowance sprayed, the landowner will accept full responsibility for noxious weed / brush control on said road allowance, in accordance with County Bylaw 714 – 1973.

pours, the reason I say anything with fur is quite funny…or not! Just before we tilled the garden there was moose poop and tracks all over in the garden, I thought, well that was neat no harm done, but we just looked at two plum trees the wife has been babying for four years. We wondered why they didn’t bloom so good; it turns out the moose thought these two nice trees would make a nice light snack and chewed off all the branch tips…run moose run!!!

By the time you read this May will have come and gone, June is always a good month, and it is also the first day of summer that falls on June 21 in 2017 this year, we all need to enjoy summer this year as it may seem short.

Another thing good about summer is the dogs should curb their working appetites a little as they are eating me out of house and home, which also brings up a huge shout out and many thanks to a couple of very nice people.

chickens that were too old for good quality, the dogs just love the eggs and provide great food value and supplements. I started them off slow with just a couple eggs each a day mixed in their daily food; now we mix in all the eggs the chickens will lay, and they can’t wait for “numma numma” time.

It’s a good thing hunting season is only a couple months away as nothing will go to waste around our place, we will freeze for winter as much trim and cuttings from any successful hunts as possible. It should be a nice summer folks, we all should make the most out of it and enjoy it to the fullest.

My loop of travels to the city and back recently saw far too many fields yet to show any signs of activity on them…and looking at them an obvious reason why.

Had me cringing inside, at any rate, field after field, not seeing the buzz and dust of seeding activity that you should (and hope) to see by this time. If anything the waterfowl populations should spike this year… there are sure a lot of ponds bursting their banks everywhere you look. Noticed even that big island in Birch Lake by Innisfree that became a peninsula for so many years is back to being an island again.

In any event, a week of solid effort has meant our garden here is finally in…at least a couple weeks later than usual and even if it was tilled rather hurriedly and more wet than desired. That nasty windstorm we got last week sure didn’t help the

where already. I guess one of the things I’ve always enjoyed about working outside and in the garden is that every year is a bit different. Considering the influences I’ve had from grandparents, parents, and even siblings when it comes to gardening…it just wouldn’t seem right to me now not to do it. I know it would have been a hot topic of conversation with Dad and I certainly miss that right about now. It was one of his passions and is a great hobby.

I’m certainly encouraged to see gardening appears to be making a comeback: fresh food grown from your own garden is about the best there is. Hard to argue with that sentiment and not so bad for your health and general demeanor either.

And…if one of your kids just happens to pull up an entire row of partially grown carrots inspecting them all for the ‘best one’ to eat…maybe go easy on them. Just a thought…

I had to laugh too when one of our neighbors came by our place and in stopping to admire the garden progress showed disappointment we had taken down our ‘rustic’ poplar garden fence (so recently smashed and involuntarily removed) and managed to pawn off, even more, deadfall firewood on us…yet a quick glance behind me at the yard in every direction seeing brush piles, sawdust, and recently cut logs lying every-

squares. There are banana oatmeal, chocolate, apple spice, raisin spice, banana walnut and other variations. They usually all contain oatmeal, with a unique technique in which the oatmeal is first softened by pouring hot water on it and then letting it cool. Do not use old fashioned slow cooking rolled oats, but instead use the quick cooking variety of oats for this recipe. I use my electric hand held beater to make this cake and it is done in no time.

Back in the 1970’s and 80’s snaking cake was popular as a cake in a box, that all you did is add water, stir and bake.

This is a homemade version, that has its roots even father back than then, and has the added benefit of oatmeal, spice and raisins.

Oatmeal Raisin Spice Snacking Cake 1 cup oatmeal

FOR RENT

1 cup hot water 1/2 cup butter 2/3 cup sugar 2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ginger 1/4 teaspoon cloves 1 cup flour 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 cup raisins (optional) Add the hot water to the oatmeal and stir, and then set aside to cool. Cream together the butter and brown sugar. Beat in the eggs, spices and vanilla. Beat in the flour and baking powder. Stir in the raisin. Turn into a buttered 8 x 8 metal baking pan and bake for 35 - 40 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Served cooled, with or without icing, or warm with ice cream.

‘Growing Up In The Ducey Block’

Located where the current Days Inn is in Vermilion (formerly the Brunswick Motel), was a collection of buildings that became the Ducey Block in 1921, and Bottorff Apartments in 1945.

Brian Bottorff recently completed a nonpublished family history book, ‘Growing Up In The Ducey Block,’ that details his family’s years of growing up in Vermilion.

Complete with descriptions of the buildings’ best hiding spots, and stories of childhood escapades, the book vividly depicts an era from one man’s memory.

Brian’s father, Floyd John Bottorff, built many houses in the Vermilion area until 1971. Next to a beer parlour in the days of ladies and escorts, keeping a family of four children in order along with other tenants and visitors would have been difficult work.

With several shenanigans involving homemade explosives, it is a wonder the

family survived let alone thrived.

Entertainment consisted of exploding a live shotgun shell in his hand, blasting ants with firecrackers or using them to rocket tin cans 15 - 20 feet in the air.

An excerpt from his book follows describing how after tending their pet rabbit through the cold winter, Brian along with his brother Wade decided that it would be easier to clean the cage by use of explosives than to chop out the pile of frozen rabbit raisins.

“One Saturday we got a bright idea, we would clean the cage by blasting it clean.

By this time my brother, some of our friends, and I had become quite proficient at making gunpowder. So why not use gunpowder to dislodge the frozen mess?”

Complete with a detonating device and all of the necessary equipment, the boys kindly removed the rabbit and proceeded to line up behind a fence before pushing the button.

“Boom! A wall of rabbit turds came belching out of the front of the cage and spread across the yard. There were rabbit raisins and straw laying everywhere,” continued Bottorff.

As the boys and their friends grew, their experiments grew with bigger bangs, more shrapnel, and a basement still; it is

Teachers from the Vermilion School of Hope held a BBQ to raise funds for their students graduation at the Cornerstone Co-op on May 30.

Teacher, Iain Menzies said that the School of Hope will have 40 students graduating this year.

“A total of $350 was raised in total at the BBQ. The funds will be used to help cover the food costs and to purchase some decorations,” said Kaitlin Groop, who is also a teacher at the School of Hope.

Ineligible passengers are those students residing less than 2.4 km by roadway or public right of way from their designated school pursuant to Section 51 (2) of the School Act. All ineligible passengers are required to pay a fee.

Transportation to Caregiver bussing is subject to availability. Privileges may be revoked if space becomes an issue. The caregiver’s residence must be in the student’s designated transportation (attendance) area.

The Vermilion River Regional Waste Management Ser vices Commission (VRRWMSC) now has two blue recycle bins available; one for plastic and metal, and the other for cardboard.

County of Vermilion River rural resi-

dents are encouraged to recycle creating less waste for the landfill.

Specifications of the new bins require that all containers must be empty and rinsed, with lids removed.

Born in Austria on March 8, 1930, Matilde Watkins (nee Ferchner’s) life was dramatically changed when her father, Aaron Lukas Ferchner, was conscripted in the German Army in 1940.

Before Watkins’ birth, in approximately 1925, the family worked and lived in a barn and on one occasion, the owners said, “We’ll look after the babies,” but the Aaron and Kresenzia Ferchner never saw their first born infant twins again. According to Watkins’ son, Jeffrey Myles, by the time his mother, Matilde Watkins (nee Ferchner) was born, the family had moved into the top half of a home that remained the family home for nearly 50 years.

Myles also said that in 1942, Ferchner and his whole platoon were poisoned by a Czechoslovakian cook working for the Resistance. Many died, but Ferchner survived and was sent to Vienna to have half of his stomach removed. He then returned home for a short recovery when the above family photograph was taken.

He returned to serve and when the war ended in 1945, soldiers were simply told to go home, meaning that Ferchner had to walk from Russia to Austria (a minimum of 1,500 kilometers).

Myles went on to say that after a couple of months walking with no money, Ferchner reached the Austrian border but was held in custody for one and a half months, partly because the authorities questioned the shape of his mustache and he had no identification to prove that he was Austrian.

Even though the war was over, the authorities didn’t know or couldn’t prove that Hitler was dead, so until news spread, Ferchner was detained.

As for Watkin’s experience, Myles mentioned that because Watkin’s father was in the Third Reich, the government issued the family one pig per month during the war; without which they would not

have survived. However, even with growing much of their own food, it was a challenge to feed several children; toward the end of the month, dinner often consisted of rye bread spread with just pork fat and salt and pepper.

“We were hungry and cold,” said Watkins.

Watkins went on to say that she had many positive experiences during the war.

She had been sent to a school in the Alps much like summer camp in the mountains.

To attend, she rode two trains and spent one day walking the foothills of the Alps to reach her destination.

“The fresh air and water in the lakes of the Alps is something you can’t quite understand. There is so much peace and beauty; it is really hard to explain. It was a very good time and we were very grateful,” said Watkins.

There, Watkins learned farming and sewing skills, and the products were sent to supply the Third Reich. Children slept in hay or bunk beds in a row at the few homes in the Alps. When the war ended, children 10 - 18 years old had to walk home and were surprised to find no trains at the station.

Watkins stayed at the train station for a couple of days with no food until a group of drunken Nazi soldiers showed up. According to Myles, the men were very threatening, and things were going to get ugly in a hurry until one brass put a couple of bullets in the ceiling and warned the others that if they hurt anyone he would put a bullet in their head.

Other than seeing a platoon of trucks once in a while, Watkins spent the majority of the war with the comfort of family in Rothenthurm (an Austrian town of approximately 1,400 people). When the war ended, they bussed everyone to Judenburg (an Austrian town of approximately 9,000 people) to the movie theatre where they viewed a film detailing the aftermath of WWII. According to Myles, to this day, Watkins

can’t reconcile in her head having lived an idyllic life in a small town with fond memories of summer camp, not knowing the havoc Hitler had wreaked all around her and around the world.

Watkins travelled to England in 1949 or 1950 with her friend Annie, where she spent a few years as a nanny. She also travelled to Switzerland and back to England before her friend moved to Elliot Lake, Ontario.

One year later, in 1957, Watkins made the decision to immigrate to Canada. She had missed a train to her destination, and while at the station, in her broken English, Watkins asked the young man behind the counter about the next train. He ultimately became her husband and father of her children.

Watkins shared an anecdote about one of her first experiences in Canada.

“Although I had spent time in England, when I landed in Canada I did not yet speak fluent English. The fellow at customs said, ‘Male or Female?’ and I didn’t know what it

was,” said Watkins.

She quickly learned the language and culture and was able to put her past behind her.

“By embracing being a Canadian, she was able to manage her confusion,” said Myles.

With three of her children living across Canada, Watkins has travelled the country with one of her favourite places being the Calgary foothills because of the familiarity to her childhood home and summer oasis.

“I’m a very fortunate person to have come to Canada and am proud to be Canadian. You just don’t realize; it’s almost like you are in heaven,” said Watkins.

During the past 10 years, Watkins opened up to her family about her younger years and has been able to share similar experiences with friends on either side of the battle including being made to ration things like sugar during the WWII. She currently resides in Stratford, Ontario where she enjoys regular visits with family.

Honouring Our Seniors

According to the United Nations, the proportion of older people within the global population will more than double between now and the year 2050. This is actually good news, as it indicates an improvement in health and socioeconomic conditions. However, the phenomenon also implies some difficulties for societies around the world, and these issues will have to be tackled during the twenty-first century.

The World Bank repor ts that life expectancy, which in 2009 had already reached 81 in Canada, is also increasing in developing countries. Healthy seniors

are an important resource for families and for the economy, and investing in their health brings benefits to society as a whole. It is important, therefore, to highlight the important contribution of seniors in Canada. Seniors give a lot to their communities and to their families—one senior in four is a caregiver for a family and the hours that seniors give to volunteer work exceed those of all other age groups. Sadly, their work often goes unrecognized.

How can we honour these important members of our society? On a personal level, you could send cards to

the seniors in your family, visit them, or just pick up the phone and call them.

Spending time with someone at a seniors centre is another good idea, as is taking an active interest in their lives and offering to do errands or chores to make life easier for them.

Vermilion Senior Centre News

Summer is flying by month of June brings the longest day. Gardens are growing and lots of beautiful flower beds. As you walk up to the centre stop and enjoy the flowers of many colours growing there. The Senior Centre will be quiet for the summer holidays.

June 8 will be the last crib doubles until September. Bingo will be played June 15 then return in September, come and enjoy the jackpot is growing.

On June 21 the last potluck supper until September will be held. Following the supper there will be entertainment. Potluck dishes welcome come and enjoy. The kitchen renovations are progressing well.

Tuesday, June 5 at 11:45 a.m. there is a Senior’s ay BBQ at the centre as we celebrate Seniors’ Week. The flag will be put up at the Seniors Centre before July 1 to celebrate Canada’s 150 birthday.

This year’s SHAPE recital was sold out. The recital showcased an exploration of music and movement highlighting the 2016/2017 SHAPE dancers, vocalists and artists at the Lakeland College, Alumni Hall on June 3.

SHAPE and Wellness Studios which opened less than two years ago has been growing in leaps and bounds and produced many new young dancers.

“There has been a lot of growth,” said SHAPE Owner and choreographer Leigha Wald.

After working as a Dance Instructor for 18 years, this was the first time running her own business. Wald says that the experience has been different, challenging and something new.

“It went great. The support from the community was awesome, and the danc-

Wald runs the business alongside her husband Robin, who works as a massage therapist out of the new dance and wellness studio in the Lakeland Mall.

Wald choreographs 75 percent of the dances herself and says she is already getting new choreography ideas for next season.

“It’s great to see how far all our dancers how come. It has been an exciting time for me, meeting so many new students,” said Wald.

There were four graduating dance students; Ceilidh Conlon, Ker st yn Kaziechko, Shaelyn Rehmann and Daneca Goldsmith. M a r l e n e B e a t t i e , Ve r m i l i o n T D Canada Trust branch manager, said that the TD Bank will be hosting their annual Children’s Miracle Net work (CMN) BBQ on June 9.

“We wanted to try something different with a twist this year, so we are adding a “Fill the Bus” to help raise awareness and food stocks for our

local Vermilion Food Bank.

We set out a challenge to also involve each of our banks here in Vermilion to rally their employees and customers to see which bank can bring in more food. We will have a tracking system set up to ask which bank they are with so the right bank gets the points. We thought it would be fun and maybe we will get that bus so full it overflows!

A local radio station will broadcast from the event to help make it more fun and also to get more participation.

“I hope I can count on each of you to help bring support to this very worthy cause here in Vermilion and we can have some fun doing it,” added Beat-

Loads of entertainment is expected throughout the day and night at the upcoming Multicultural and Canada Day celebrations to be held in Vermilion on June 30.

The day’s celebrations will begin with a pancake breakfast hosted by Communities in Bloom at the Vermilion Fire Hall. Children’s activities including bouncy castles will follow in the Credit Union parking lot. An expected highlight of the day will be the much anticipated reveal of the Canada 150 Mosaic.

A beef on a bun lunch will be held between Long’s and Craig’s, and downtown enter tainment will include the Duelling Pianos and Open Stage performances. Several businesses will be participating and carriage rides will be

given from downtown to Lakeland Mall.

A car show will be hosted at the Boston Pizza parking lot, followed by a full evening at the Provincial Park.

The Good Life Institute will be at the Vermilion Provincial Park hosting a ‘Taste of Vermilion’ as well as beer gardens.

Ukrainian Dancers will be performing, and the Duelling Pianos will perform again at the park before the outdoor movie. Fireworks will finish off the night just after midnight!

“It’s important to celebrate our heritage and the people that came before us; we owe those that had the vision of a country 150 years ago a lot,” said Director of Community Services, Shawn Bell.

Lions Dog Walk

Approximately 30 people and over 20 dogs gathered at the Vermilion Provincial Park on May 28, for the Lions Dog Walk which raised $2,650 this year.

“I do this walk every year for friends Gretta Bugera and Betty Thomas, and because it goes to a good cause. I am also grateful for the good help I receive from Justin Thompson,” said James Cryderman.

Suppor ting guide dogs for vision loss, as well as other impairments, the

program continues to support those in need. According to Justin Thompson, the weather cooperated, and the dog walk saw a solid turn out.

“Everywhere I look there’s a dog to be seen. With all of the fundraising groundwork done, the dog walk was a day to celebrate, get together and enjoy having dogs.

We were right in the ball park of what we were hoping for. We would like to thank the community for their generous donations, and look forward to seeing everyone next year!” said Thompson.

Robson School’s participated in at the Treaty 6 Language and Culture Day on May 30th at Blue Quills University. “It was a very enjoyable and fun experience, as everyone had the opportunity to learn some words in Cree, listen to some traditional First Nations drumming, songs, and stories, and participate in a round dance,” said senior high Social Studies teacher Mr. Maier said.

We were honoured to be invited by the Treaty 6 Tribal Chiefs Council to be a part of efforts to educate young people about First Nations language and culture, and we hope to make this an annual experience for Marauder students. Hiy hiy!

“They were fantastic ambassadors of our school. They were absolutely wonderful and I would take them anywhere again,” says. Mrs. Speck of the Grade 7s after she took them to the New Blood Dance production, performed by a group of high school students from Strathmore. The event was held at Vermilion’s Alumni Theatre at Lakeland College. The performance enhanced

students’ understanding of First Nations Metis Inuit history and culture through the integration of symbolism.

“On Tuesday, June 13, 2017 our Entrepreneurship 8 Class will be selling their handmade wares at the Farmer’s Market at the Elks Hall,” announced co-teachers Miss Ishaq and Mrs. Hart. For sale will be candles, bath bombs, coasters, popcorn balls, cheesecake cupcakes, card games, dream catchers, lip balm, kompot juice. The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Mr. Woodward’s P. E. classes recently went on two canoe trips. The Grade 10s paddled the North Saskatchewan River

for two days and the Grade 11 and 12s explored the circuit of lakes at Lakeland Provincial Park.

Meet. Great Work, Spartans!

A large group of Grade 10 Leadership students attended the annual ASLC Conference from Sunday, May 28 – Tuesday, May 30. This year’s conference was held in Lacombe. The students were welcome by the host leaders and attended a variety of breakout sessions throughout the three days. They also had opportunities to meet new people and enjoyed participating in a variety of games, activities and had a great time at the “Blast from the Past” dance on Monday night. There were three keynote speakers who addressed the students during the conference. Former child soldier from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Michel Chikwanine, who grew up amid the terror of the Great War of Africa inspired the students to believe in their ability to make a difference. The students gained a new perspective of life, a sense of hope and a desire for change.

Comedian and Celebrity Impersonator, Gery Schubert, used humour to grab the attention of the young people and

inspired them to use humour as part of their leadership skills. The third speaker was Olympic Silver Medalist and 4-time Alberta Women’s Curling Champion, successful business owner, and creator of “Curl for a Cure” for Breast Cancer, Cheryl Bernard. She shared the many lessons she has learned from sport and life. She encouraged the students to never lose site of the need to give back to your family, school, community, country and world. The students from St. Jerome’s left the conference with many new friendships, and memories and our excited to share their talents and gifts with the school community. Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. MacMillan for supporting the students in this great adventure.

Elementary Track and Field will be held on Friday, June 16 starting at 10:30 a.m.

The students will be treated to a hotdog lunch that day. The students have been practicing their events and are excited for the day to come.

June will be a very busy month at St. Jerome’s beginning with this first

week. Grade 10 students finished up their courses and final exams so they can become college students for three weeks at Lakeland College beginning on Monday, June 5. Students will have the opportunity to experience a variety of courses, such as, automotives, carpentry, welding, electrical, and interior design. Our final mass for the school year will be held on Tuesday, June 6 at 10:30 a.m. at the Holy Name of Jesus Parish. Grade 6-12 will be participating in the Annual Ball Tournament on Wednesday, June 7.

The Final Exam/Diploma schedule can be found on the school website at stjschool.org or in the school newsletter. High School exams will begin on Monday, June 12. The last day of classes for the grade eleven and twelve students is Friday, June 16. The last day of classes for grade nine and ten students will be Friday, June 23. The last day of school, report card day and the Middle Level Awards ceremony is on Thursday, June 29.

the magnetism presentation, students discussed and experimented with a variet y of magnets. Small crawling and flying animals was the second topic, which provided the students with the opportunity to observe, touch and discover more about the world of insects and arachnids.

To assist with the upcoming Provincial Achievement Tests, Miss Alana has organized study hall for the Grade 6 students. It started on May 29 and will also run for the next two Mondays, June 5 and June 12, in the library during lunch and lunch recess.

We wish the Grade 6 students best wishes as they write their PATs from June 19-23.

Our present kindergarten students g o t t o s t ay h o m e o n M ay 31 a n d June 1, and the 2017-18 kindergarten students were present on those days.

They got to visit VES for a trial run, checking out the school, the staff, and the other students.

Grade 1 students helped the Vermilion lodge residents prepare their flower beds. They pulled weeds, turned soil, and picked pine cones in preparation to plant flowers. They enjoyed the sunshine and Miss Rozka and Luke even had the chance to visit with their great grandmas.

If you need to get a hold of one of the bus drivers that transports your children to and from VES, please do so before the bus run (7:0 0am) or after the bus run (5:00pm). There are sometimes last-minute situations that happen that require notification to a

bus driver, but unless it is an emerg e n c y, b u s d r i ve r s s h o u l d n o t b e answering their phones while they are on route, stopped or not. Every time a bus driver has to pull over to answer a text or phone call, it means a delay in get ting the students home or to school. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Effective the beginning of the 20172018 school year, parents of Kindergarten through Grade 6 students will not be charged the $85 mandator y school fee they had been charged in the past. The passing of Bill 1 will remove the cost of the Mandator y School Fee from parents and provide school boards with funding to replace the revenue from those fees.

Vermilion Play Development Tours The Cheesery

VMP Submitted

On Tuesday, May 23 and Wednesday, May 24, the Vermilion Play Development traveled to The Old School Cheesery located south of Vermilion on TWP Road 482 west.

Upon arrival, Val Roberts (owner and manager) as well as her friendly Great Dane Lab cross dog, Shadow welcomed us to The Old School Cheesery. Val explained what cheese is made from and then led us in to the room where they store their milk in a large tank. She explained how the milk is kept cold in the tank and how they test the milk to make sure it is safe for consumption before they can use it. She then escorted us into another room so that we could

observe through a large window.

Her father Patrick Dupuis, (owner and operator) and her brother Sabastian, then demonstrated how they cut the cheese after it is made and make cheese curds. Then they showed us how they form and press cheese curds into bricks of cheese. The children were then able to sample the tasty cheese curds that they just saw being made!

The children, staff and parents who attended all thoroughly enjoyed their tour of The Old School Cheesery. We thanked Val and her family and then the children enjoyed giving Shadow one last hug as they headed to the bus to travel back. They were so excited about the wonderful day they all had shared together!

Lakeland Students Excel At Alberta Skills Competition

Three Lakeland College students were award winners at the 2017 Alberta Skills Competition at the Edmonton Expo Centre earlier this month.

Zenon Ostashewski, a 2nd steamfitter-pipefitter apprentice, received a silver medal in the steamfitter/pipefitter competition; Kaleb Bosch, a 4th year carpenter apprentice, won a bronze in carpentry; and Derek Haggart, a 1st year apprentice in the automotive service technician trade, received the Safety Award after competing in the Auto Service competition.

Ostashewski praised his Lakeland College teachers for their support and expertise during his apprenticeship technical training at the Vermilion campus, saying they heightened his skills heading into the competition.

“It was a good experience, especially to have been a part of this level of steamfitting. There were a lot of skillful competitors there, so I was surprised and honoured to have won a silver medal,” says Ostashewski. During the Steamfitter/Pipefitter competition, Ostashewski was required to assemble, troubleshoot and repair piping systems.

Bosch, who was required to build a children’s play structure, was happy with his bronze medal win.

“I am a fast worker and although I wasn’t judged on speed, I thought I did pretty well,” says Bosch. “My instructors were really great with allowing me to come in during my spare to time to work on projects and answer my questions, which I think gave me the preparation to perform as well as I did.”

It was the second Alberta Skills medal for Bosch, a silver medalist in Carpentry at the 2016 competition.

“I deal with a lot of stuff every day that could injure me and put me out of work.

It is always good to focus on the things needed to keep yourself safe and get home,” says Haggart, who was required to be diligent in wearing personal protective equipment and handling power tools while under the hood during the competition.

Haggart also commended Lakeland College and his instructors for giving him the skillset to compete at the provincial level.

“If it wasn’t for Lakeland College and my instructors, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to further my skills at such a

Haggart previously competed in Lakeland Regional Skills Competition, an annual event for high school students at Lakeland’s Vermilion campus. He received a bronze medal in auto service in 2015 and silver in 2016.

In total, six Lakeland College students participated in five categories of the provincial competition, including Auto Service, Carpentry, Heavy Equipment Service, Steamfitter/Pipefitter, and Welding.

Saddling Up For Brain Injury Awareness

Curtis Anderson and his supporters hit the trail for the thirteenth annual Courage Canada Trail Ride to Support Brain Injury on Saturday, May 27 as horses and riders as well as wagons made their way through pastures and side roads just North West of Minburn.

Anderson is a brain injury survivor following a devastating head-on collision with a bull’s head while competing in the bull riding event at Ponoka Stampede in 2002. He spent days in coma and them began to rebuild his life, all the while working to help others enduring similar injuries. Anderson now speaks to schools and various public events throughout the province and western Canada.

The annual ride started at Anderson’s ranch where six wagons carrying 21 people, were accompanied by 38 horse and rider combinations as the trek streamed through some of the most picturesque scenery in the area, stopping for lunch along the way before heading back to the ranch to unsaddle.

The action moved to the Innisfree Rec Centre where a delectable supper was enjoyed following the day in the saddle.

And er son thanked ever yone for attending and then presented his Road To Recovery speech, which detailed his injury, recovery and his continued efforts to raise awareness for brain injuries.

Anderson’s parents Norman and Karen Anderson both spoke and thanked those

who have supported the 13 years of the Courage Canada trail ride and Curtis’ recovery. Karen Anderson said although life can be full of challenges we have to face what comes.

“What is more important is that we help each other get through tough times,” she said. “Curtis visits patients and families in hospitals to help them through their trials and tribulations.”

The audience also heard from Tressa Freeman of Marwayne, Alberta, whose daughter Ryen suffered an undiagnosed concussion in October of last year which led to two more concussions within a six-week span. The injuries caused impairment of Ryen’s speech, balance, and vision and eventually led to dozens of seizures on a daily basis. The family sought out help from specialists and even resorted to alternative therapies until finally being admitted to the Calgary Children’s Hospital where she is now being treated. Mom Tressa said she is making great strides and the family hopes to start making the gradual transition home and resume therapy out of the Vermilion Hospital.

Tressa said she and husband Merle Freeman, Canadian Professional Rodeo Association Champion Bull Rider, know very well, the seriousness of concussions. Ryen and Tressa compete as barrel racers and the Freeman’s are adamant about Ryen wearing a helmet when competing.

Tressa said the family is very thankful

for their family’s support as well as their rodeo family, including Curtis Anderson.

The barrel racing community will be holding a fundraiser jackpot in Elk Point on June 4, to help with costs associated with Ryen’s recovery.

The attention then turned to local auctioneer Miles Wowk who served as emcee for the night, and hosted the live auction portion of the evening where bids flew for the various items up for sale. A

silent auction was also held throughout the supper and later into the evening before guest performer Matt Robertson filled the hall with his traditional western music.

Anderson said the funds raised from the event are donated to brain injury survivors and their families, as well as to VALID, FOCUS, LABIS and to the Halvar Jonson Centre for Brain Injury in Ponoka, Alberta.

Courage Canada Approximately 300 people attended the 2017 Courage Canada Trail Ride Supper, and the event saw 21 people in wagons with six teams, and 38 people on horseback. The Silent Auction raised $1,965 while the Live Auction raised $6,140.

Can You Golf Blindfolded?

Fourty-five people registered for the 19th Annual CNIB-Lions Charity Golf Tournament at the Vermilion Golf and Country Club on June 2.

Players had the opportunity at the tournament to putt and drive blindfolded adding a fun twist to their golf game and acting as a very present reminder of the cause at hand.

“The weather challenges were better than anticipated, and being blindfolded seemed to improve Tee Hills game,” said Neil Snelgrove.

According to Lions Past President, George Matechuk, the tournament raised close to $5,000. Half of the proceeds will go towards community projects and half to the CNIB. Everyone received a prize with the winning team having the first selection. A silent auction was also held to raise additional funds.

Boys U-16 Soccer Shows Potential High

Diarmuid Dalton, Vermilion Soccer U-16 Boys soccer coach, said he is confident his squad of 17 players are on the hot track to the Provincials this year.

So far this season the team has been unbeaten in their league and has not conceded a goal.

“All the players are performing really

well this season so far. We normally play 3 or 4 tier and take them to Edmonton to a pre-season 2 tier Duggan Tournament to try and challenge them a little bit more, and they won gold,” said Dalton.

In the league, teams qualify for the Lakeland Cup, and Vermilion has played and beaten three out of the five teams in their group so far.

The team trains two nights per week with players traveling from Clandonald and Mannville, and a new player to the team this year travels from Lloydminster.

Warmed by sunshine and baseball fever, families gathered to watch as Vermilion Minor Ball hosted 27 teams during the Brian Poon Baseball Tournament on June 3 - 4.

Poon a past Vermilion resident (who was a large supporter of baseball) is who the tournament has been named after, and children of all ages continue looking forward to playing in it each year.

From the Learn To Play Tee-ball team up to the U-19 Midget team, Vermilion was booming with continuous baseball action throughout the weekend.

According to Robert Livingstone, the first Midget game was played against Marwayne which is an AA team and includes a few local boys.

Tyke Festival - A Ton Of Fun

Excitement filled the arena air as the Vermilion Roar Tyke Festival hosted 16 lacrosse games on June 3 – 4 Two Vermilion Tyke teams hosted t wo Wainwright teams, Cold Lake, Bonnyville, and Flagstaff. With each team playing four games throughout the weekend.

Parents volunteered to barbeque burgers, and approximately 25 door p r ize s d r aws wer e ava i l a b l e. T h e proceeds from the festival went back into the lacrosse association to help

offset playing fees, tournament costs, a n d p u r c h a s i n g n e w j e r s ey s a n d needed equipment.

Children had a blast during and in between games! Perhaps the most excitement was seen as players vied to pie their coaches in the face. Some coaches from other teams even rallied to get in on the fun. “ L acrosse is a great ac tivit y for the children.
