According to Science Daily, prescribed or controlled burning is a technique sometimes used in forest management, farming, or prairie restoration. Order Your Pride Flag For Canada 150

The Vermilion Rotary Club wanted to do something special this year for Canada’s 150th birthday and decided to do the Rotary Flag project. The projects aim is to get residents of Vermilion to fly the Canadian Flag. Vermilion Rotary Flag Project Committee Chair, Craig Brown said, “We will do all the work for a $60 donation. We will drop off and pick up the flags before every long weekend in May, July, August and September. The flags will be put out by members of the Rotary Club first for the coming May long weekend.” Brown explained it’s an opportunity to give back and to show a little patriotism

and Canadian pride and at the same time it is a fundraiser for the club. “We hope it will be an ongoing project, year after year. There has been a lot of interest this year because of the Canada 150, and it’s great to see. All of the money raised for the Vermilion Rotary Club goes back into the Vermilion community, said Brown. It’s not too late to get a flag for your yard. The Rotary Club has secured more flags since their initial order. Making History With Canada 150 Mosaic Project

A total of 530 young and old participants united to paint a 4 x 4-inch tile for the Canada 150 Mosaic project at VES last week. The mosaic is part of a bigger picture with communities from coast to coast creating thousands of tile paintings to connect as a nation in celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday. On May 28, you can join Canadians from over 240 communities by participating in the Lions ‘Walk For Dog Guides’ at the Vermilion Provincial Park Cookhouse at 1 p.m. Since 1985, the Lions ‘Walk for Dog Guides’ has raised over $14 million making it the Lions Foundation’s largest annual fundraising event. One hundred per cent of the funds raised goes towards the training and placement of Dog Guides for Canadians as service dogs and for those with

Almost every week you hear someone from my generation and the older generation complaining about our younger generation also known as Millennials. It seems to me that we always find a reason to give them a knock down. If we are not complaining about how we think they think they are entitled to so much we are complaining about whether or not they hold a door open for us etc. I think we need to take a good look at ourselves before we go complaining about them. A couple weeks back I saw a post on Facebook where someone said: “I can’t believe someone younger than 40 just held the door open for me,

that just doesn’t happen.” I thought to myself when I read it “boy oh boy I hope you always do it because I have had a lot of young ones (as we call them) hold the door for me.” Actually, I have had more of the younger ones hold the door for me than I have my own age group or older. Since then I have been taking notice of our younger generation and the way they act and how they are sometimes unjustly condemned and stereotyped. I have also noticed that the young ones smile more and say hello as you pass them on the street if you say it to them first. I have also noticed that they are the ones who stop and let you pull out of a parking space or parking lot more often. For example, the other day I was waiting to pull out onto the road from the Co-op gas bar, and at least five cars with drivers my age and older just kept going, the only person who stopped to

give me an opportunity to pull out was a young guy approximately 18 to 20 years old. I again thought to myself ‘wow what a nice, considerate young man.’ Saturday, I went to the soccer tournament to watch my best friend’s son play and let ’s say the weather was completely horrible; it was cold, windy and drizzling rain and those children never complained half as much as us adults did. They never begged their parents to bring them home to play video games as we accuse them of all the time. I watched those children play to the best of their abilities, and they were committed to stay there and play until all their games were complete. I saw teenagers referee the games and did so without complaint, while us older ones, myself included, complained the whole time about the crappy weather and how we would rather be home. After

It ’s one of life’s mysteries why one day turns out o n e way a n d t h e next doesn’t, even though they were spent basically doing similar things. The Oilers were a good example of that…seemingly unstoppable one day and mortal the next. Such are the ups and downs of life I suppose. All part of life’s rich pattern, just wish it hadn’t left off at the down part. This week has been one where the pendulum of odd and humdrum have been doing some back and forth in juxtaposition with my routines anyway…and you wonder if being conscious of them

actually did or did not cause events to play out as they did. Confused yet? Well if you are not you really should be. I don’t even know where I’m going and I’m doing the writing here. I guess what I am getting at, and perhaps mentioned previously, is that life’s little events go by as probabilities and will most of the time roll things you expect day after day then occasionally you get a Yahtzee roll of weird all in about 24 hrs, and you wonder how the heck did all that happen. I’ll have to admit growing up still within a time where guys were expected to be the ones chivalrously minded…so it caught me off guard starting the one morning when a young lady held a door for me on a what seemed like a 5 count. Hey..I was sort of limping a little (knee), but I thought it unexpected but OK. I said ‘Thank you very much’ and good for her, certainly spreading a little early cheer to the day. Then after waiting on the platform I got on my train…instead of having to stand like every other day so far, there are actual fully open seats. Never happens. Another young woman sits

down across and calmly pulls out a bowl of cereal from her bag and begins to eat it with perfect nonchalance. Again…I thought maybe that was a bit odd but maybe she was pressed for time and missed her breakfast and thought that was a good spot for it. Me…I’m more inclined to miss by breakfast entirely rather than eat 2 feet across from a perfect stranger…not even beginning to touch the list of subtle cues that everyone on a train goes through with empty seats and choosing who you will spend the next 10-15 minutes sitting in tolerable silence beside let alone eating my Cheerios. I thought I must have REALLY had my friendliest face on early this morning. I get to work and after a couple of hours of training at my desk go downstairs to get caffeine to perk the synapses back up and I use a gift card for Starbucks I had just received from coaching over the winter. I had looked at it in the dark and thought it was for $10 which was usual. I pay for my beverage and the barista hands me back the card and my Matcha frapp (long story) and says cheerily ‘Sir, you have $94 left

on your card.’ My head almost snapped my neck in a ‘What the…are you sure?’. So I’m thinking I’m going to be doing the happy hour deal going on this week a bit more…and THAT was completely unexpected. I almost never go to Starbucks. To top it off…I almost never run into anyone I know from outside my office either when I am working downtown then today on the way down to the train I run literally straight into my childhood neighbor back at Tolland, Catherine Lee, who worked on my Dad’s book not so long ago. I thought…’what are the odds of that?’.The fact that we both at one time or another have written for the Voice has to be a somewhat small cast of characters to run into in a big old world. Anyway, it was funny how you can be mingling around many strangers all day and then enter into conversation at a level that could only take place with someone who lived next door and you rode a school bus with for 11 years. Hope you cross paths with a few good…and unexpected…things this week too.

Spring is finally here, and I am glad for the sunshine. Far mer s are busy g et t i n g t h e ir c r o p s put in, and gardeners are planting their early potatoes. For me, I am working on a Turkish Delight recipe and trying to have a few easy meals in the fridge to help with our busy work and farm schedule. I have found a large batch of this recipe to be handy when cooked and stored in the refrigerator. It is great to mix with pasta, rice, mashed potatoes or serve a green salad or coleslaw on the side, for several quick and easy meals. It is especially good for a fast meal when families are busy and on the go with ball practice and other activities. You

We had a hardware store that was not only making money for this Co-op, it was also providing a needed public service to the local people. We also had a very good furniture store providing employment to local people and we could buy local and keep the town viable. The old

can use any t ype of ground meat, beef, moose, pork, chicken or turkey. I will often mix two types of ground meat such as pork and beef or beef and moose. Goulash has its roots in Hungary, and it is a well know dish across much of Europe. The word goulash translates to “herdsman” or what we would call “cowboy.” In Europe, it is often heavily seasoned with paprika, the spice of choice for traditional goulash. Traditional Hungarian goulash can have a staggering 1/4 - 1/2 cup paprika, double the garlic, meat cut into small cubes, and the addition of red and yellow peppers and cubed potatoes. It is more like a stew. A lot of Americanized recipes add elbow cooked pasta to goulash, which is another variation, almost like a homemade hamburger helper minus the artificial food addi-

tives. Interestingly paprika is made of ground sweet peppers, with some times small amounts of hotter dried and ground peppers added. The orange-red color of paprika is from carotenoids, and it is, therefore, a source of vitamin A. While it is not common knowledge to us Canadi ans, in Europe and through the Middle East and into Africa there are many different types of paprika, and each is valued for its unique flavour, much like wine. There is Rose, Noble Sweet, Smoked, Pungent, Strong, Delicate, Spanish paprika and the list just goes on and on. We usually only have one choice of paprika in the grocery store, so, for now, that will have to do. I hope you enjoy this quick and easy home cooked rustic dish. I like it with a little sprinkle of Cayenne pepper.

Now you fill your coffee cup then have to ring a bell to get someone to come so you can pay for it. Then you find you are the only one in the cafeteria most of the time. he can’t even order it. What happened to local when the local Co-op can’t even order a product? The local store at the mall has lots of it. When I asked at one of the annual meetings why they closed these two stores, the only answer was that it was a very tough decision. It is no wonder people are driving to other towns for cheaper groceries and appliances that they have in stock when you want it like it used to be in Vermilion.

The 2017 Lloydminster Muck Run took place on May 6 and was an “awesome success” said Muck Run Race Director Kiel Kelly. “It was sunny and hot with 27 degrees.

We had 250 people attend, and it was 5 kms in length with mud pits all over Bud Miller Park with 17 different obstacles. “Some people were there to be competitive and beat their time from last year, but most people were there to have fun,” said Kelly.

The Lakeland Rowing Club hosted 24 curious participants at their first Learn To Row session of the season on May 9 at the Vermilion River. Participants caught on quickly as they had the opportunity to learn starboard (right) and port (left) sides of the boat along with terms like gunnel, rigger, oar, and blade. They practiced feathering and squaring which means to move the blades of the oars parallel or perpendicular (respectively) to the surface of the water. Learning to push from the catch (with oars in the water and ready to push), the participants gained exercise as well as a new excursion on the water.

Participants continued to practice through the week and will have a few more upcoming sessions. They will then have the opportunity to join the Club who rows all summer, with the college teams beginning in the fall. “Our club has continued to grow interest since it began six years ago. The sport is actually building interest province-wide. For a land-locked province, you don’t expect that, but it’s nice to see,” said Lakeland Rowing Club President, Kati White. “We are thrilled to have received a great deal of interest this spring from the Lloydminster, Vermilion, and Wainwright area,” said Instructor, Peter Walsh. Student rodeo competitors travelled to Vermilion from across Alberta to compete in the final part of the rodeos in the Central Alberta district of the Alberta High School Rodeo Association. “A few groups of parents have been really involved in putting on this event. Competitors work to qualify for the provincial finals in June. Last year over 90 high school rodeo athletes travelled here to compete at the two-day event,” said Lakeland College Animal Science Instructor Geoff Brown who is also the High School Rodeo organizer. Along with the high school rodeo competition, there was a high school rodeo cutting, a junior high rodeo and working cow horse events each evening. Second Annual Farm Worker Safety Workshop

Acquiring preparedness skills, 47 students from surrounding area schools attended the Farm Worker Safety Workshop held at Lakeland College in Vermilion on May 10. Organizers were thrilled to have 20 more participants in their second year, and hope the event continues to grow in the coming years. Many of the participants were students enrolled in the Green Certificate Program, including Cole Chesterman from Edgerton, and Jared Tennant from Bawlf. They enjoyed getting to know the equipment and hands on experience.

“Be aware of what is underneath and above the ground. Safety is the first priority with anything,” said Cole Chesterman after a session on electricity, livestock, mixing chemicals and the hazards associated. “With the experience gained on our own farms, this opportunity gave us different perspectives to situations that can occur in general or daily work,” said Jared Tennant. Lakeland College and Green Certificate, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, and Ag for Life partnered together to ensure that youth working in the industry are kept safe. “We see work force training in a very positive light. Young workers are more likely to be injured on the job within the first six months, so programs like this are vital,”

Smokey Lake Green Certificate Coordinator, Hal Ziprick, brought 22 participants, and felt that bringing awareness was key. “When you are raised in a small town, it doesn’t matter if you lived on a farm or not; you may have even been a part of the lifestyle when visiting friends. In our area, we have experienced ATV problems, and aim to keep people safe in the future. It is important to expose them because I have seen my students go on to work as electricians, plumbers, County gas employees, attend Lakeland College for veterinary medicine and fish and wildlife, and sell agricultural equip-

ment,” said Ziprick. Fire extinguisher and farm machinery safety sessions were also held with important recommendations and hands on experience. After learning about the different kinds of fire (incipient, freeburning, and smouldering), and learning the proper technique, participants each had an opportunity to extinguish a flame. Participants were urged not to assume things, and know their surroundings. They were told that they are the only ones responsible for their own safety, and so they were told to check things themselves, and take the safe side all of the time; using caution and not being in a rush.

The kindergarten children are enjoying their swimming lessons and field trips. In the pool the kinders have been practicing front and back floats, glides and submerging their faces and blowing bubbles. They enjoy eating their lunches at the college cafeteria and are looking forward to warmer weather for picnics in the park. In reading the Grade 1s will be focusing on developing fluency and comprehension skills.They are also working on their sight words Grade 2’s are continuing to work on the voice trait and will also be learning about nouns, verbs, and adjectives in their Phonics.

Last week, 26 eggs in an incubator arrived in to the grade three classroom. Students are now feeling like eager parents awaiting the arrival of their baby chicks. In ELA the Grade 4’s have become poets. Students have written a variety of poems including Colour Poetry, a Fact or Fiction Poem, Dogku (a Haiku poem about their dog), and Diamante Poem. The Grade 5’s have been working hard on writing a short story on how their superhero power solves a problem! Choosing colourful and descriptive words, when writing, is their focus for the month of May. The Grade 6’s are close to completing their Air and Aerodynamic unit and have enjoyed all of the different experiments. They will be making parachutes and examining the design of an airplane in the upcoming weeks. On April 24 the Grade 6’s held a school

O n M ay 2 a n d 4, students had the opportunity to learn some new soccer skills from an expert. Joel, from the British Soccer Program, came out to teach the students new drills in a fun and exciting way. A pamphlet was sent home with each student who wished to further advance their soccer skills in a camp being offered this July. VES would like to thank the Vermilion Soccer Association for organizing this amazing soccer experience for our students. Mr. Beecroft received an email from Canadian Geographic giving him information about an upcoming Energy Diet Challenge Contest that they would be having.

When he read more about it, he realized it would be a good fit with their electricity unit in science. There were 25 challenges to complete ranging from saving water and electricity to learning about alternative energy sources and vehicles. One of the really difficult challenges was to get 150 digital signatures to promise to use less energy. They received lots of support from parents and BTPS employees. The students enjoyed making energy saving tips and putting them on the school’s website. Another challenge that was very popular was the recycled art exhibit they displayed in the library. They also had to make a one minute video that talked about saving energy. The video was then uploaded to their site where it could be voted for. They

curriculum alive outside of the school building. Our field trips this year are as follows: Grade 6 will go to Camp Encounter, Grade 5 to the Telus World of Science, Grade 4 to Fort Edmonton, Grade 3 to the Telus World of Science, Grade 2 to the Ukrainian Cultural Village, and Grade 1 to the Climb Through Time Museum. We would like to thank all those who helped with our fund raisers in order for the bussing of these fabulous field trips to be put in place. T h e S t . J e r o m e’s Graduating Class of 2017 has been busy preparing for their graduation ceremonies. The In-school Cap & Gown Ceremony will take place on Thursday, May 25 at 1 p.m. in the gymnasium. On Saturday, May 27, the mass will take place at Holy Name of Jesus Parish at 1 p.m. and the ceremony will take place at the Vermilion Regional Centre beginning at 6:30 p.m. Students had a great time dressing up in clothing from their favorite decade. There were a lot of “80’s” outfits, many hippies from the “70’s” and lots of Oilers jersey and shirts representing the present. Sadie Granigan, Maria Pottle, Ally Sancaster, and Faith Ameson, Grade 10 Leadership students, treated the staff of St. Jerome’s extra special throughout the week to show their “Appreciation.” The girls delivered hot coffee or tea on Monday morning to all staff members. During the week each staff member was given an envelope of positive messages written by the students. Wednesday delicious carrot muffins were waiting in the staff room for all staff to enjoy with their morning coffee with the message, “Give it all or muffin.” On Friday, May 12 the staff was treated to a Pancake Breakfast organized by these students. Thank you for making us all feel very special and valued. On May 9, Grade 10 students, Ashley Corbiere, Anastasia McCullough, Breanna Swan, and Kaylee Bardoel organized and hosted a “Lost & Found Fashion Show” as a Leadership project for the elementary students to enjoy. There were 32 students from Grades 1 to 5 who participated in the Fashion Show. The “models” choose clothes from the clean Lost and Found pile to show off up on stage. The students had to work hard and show the judges their creativity, school spirit, enthusiasm and great sportsmanship in order to win a prize. There were three staff members, Mrs. Wilkinson, Mrs. Dieken and Mr. Wheat who generously donated their time to judge the participant’s performances. The top place

winners were Third - Kai Maddex, Second - Kjell Millan and First place - Riley Krisps. Thank you once again to the judges, teachers, students and other helpers that made this event possible. The show was phenomenal with lots of energy. All who attended this wonderful event were very entertained. On Friday, May 5th, the Grade 6 class attended the Town Office. The students are currently learning about the roles our Municipal Government plays in society. The students received a tour and were informed of the jobs and responsibilities of the people who work in our local government. A special thank you to the town office staff and Denise MacDonald as she gave the students lots of information that will be very beneficial as we cover this topic! The annual St. Jerome 30-hour Famine took place on April 28-29. It had a total of 31 people involved. The Grade 10 Leadership group who hosted the Famine was Tanner Bibeau, Caelan Mansfield, Glen Gosselin, and Trygve Downer. The participants were given popsicles, water, and juice and had to famine from 8 a.m. of the 28 all the way to lunchtime on the 29. Activities were arranged for all participants to be involved in during the Famine. Following the Famine, there was a potluck lunch. The 30-hour famine raised approximately $900 and donated it to Chalice Organization. They would like to give a special thanks to the teacher supervisors, Mrs. Clark, Ms. Wilkinson, Mr. MacMillan, Mrs. Krys, and Mrs. Grey who helped make this event possible. The Grade 4 and 5 students from St. Jerome’s had the wonderful opportunity to paint ceramic tiles for the “150 Canadian Mosaic”. The students enjoyed being artists for the afternoon and are excited to see their artwork displayed at the end of June. They were very impressed and inspired by the magnificent Canadian Mosaics that were on display. Grade 9 and 6 students wrote Part A of the Language Arts PAT last week. It is very hard to believe it is that time of year again. The exam schedule can be found on the school website.
