Vibrant Quilt Show

The Vermilion Quilters Guild hosted a vibrant display of work showing 217 quilts at their 20th Anniversary Quilt show at the Regional Centre on May 6 and 7.

Work for the show was created by members over the previous year. Quilts presented reflected the interest of the quilter, as well as trends in colour, design, and technique adopted.

Featured Quilter Carol Wasylik at this year’s show has been quilting for 25 years and has been with the Vermilion Quilters Guild right from the start.

“It’s a passion! I love the creativity, choice of colours and being able to put something together and make people smile. People love receiving a quilt as a gift. Quilting is an art,” said Wasylik,

who owns the quilt shop in the Vermilion Mall.

President of the Vermilion Quilters Guild Brenda Bean said that the artistry and quality of work at this year’s show was “exceptional”.

“Some of the artistry that goes into quilt making is extreme. What makes this quilt show so exciting is that people are coming at it from so many different angles; as you walk around you can see traditional styles, modern quilting and applique quilting. Some are more skilled than others; some of these girls have been here 20 years or more,” said Bean.

Music was performed by RGB Trio.

Along with the 217 quilts on display, 35 quilts were donated and sold over the weekend to raise money for Cancer.

20th Anniversary Quilt Show Collaborative Project. Members of the Vermilion Quilter’s Guild each worked on quilting a 12 inch square to the making of the 20th Anniversary Quilt.

Motivational Speaker Leah Goldstein shared her life story working as a secret service agent who went on to become a Pro-Cyclist during the 5th Annual Women’s Conference at the Vermilion Regional Center on May 4.

Goldstein lifted the energy in the hall and inspired women with words of wisdom as well as teaching a few self-defense moves.

Goldstein suffered a horrific cycling accident during the 2005 Cascade Classic in central Oregon when she was clipped by another rider on a 70 km/hr descent and landed face first on the asphalt, with several other cyclists falling on top of her.

Her injuries included a broken pelvis, cheek, ankle, right arm, several broken ribs and a dislocated and broken shoulder, the loss of five teeth and a near loss of the tip of her left thumb and her top lip, as well as severe road rash over most of her body. She spent two weeks receiving

multiple surgeries in a hospital in the USA before she could be moved back home to Vancouver, where she was again admitted to hospital for further observation.

Doctors said it was a miracle Goldstein had survived the impact and that she would never ride again. But Goldstein says she was determined to prove the physicians, sports psychologists and those in the cycling community wrong and she began to train the second she was released from the hospital.

Goldstein went on to race for the next 10 years, taking part in many races. While racing from one side of the USA to the other she shaved her head when her neck muscles failed so that she could tape her head to her back to hold her head up so she would finish instead of quitting.

During the 2009 Furnace Creek 508 in California, Leah was the only woman to finish under the worst conditions in the event’s history. Battling headwinds gusting up to 60 mph during an arduous overnight traverse of Death Valley, she crossed

the finish line in 6th place overall, despite conditions in the desert with 1 km left.

Goldstein said she dug deep when she remembered the laughter of people laughing at her and saying she couldn’t do it.

“Never underestimate yourself, everybody is beatable! Never let your fears dictate your path or kill your passion!

I had the best years of my life as a professional racer at the ages of 39, 40 and 41, then I had 11 years earlier after my serious accident. Face your fear.

Don’t sit there and wait for things to come to you! Don’t stop living when you are still alive! Age is just a stupid number; it doesn’t have meaning unless you make it mean something!

I watched my grandmother dying of cancer saying, you never sit on your death bed saying I wish or what if and she so badly did not want to die…

If you have the ability to get back up every time you get knocked down – if you can get back up and keep moving forward your possibilities are truly endless!

Her business ‘No Finish Line Living’ is a metaphor for living a life with no finish line.

The premise is to continue to work hard on yourself, on your life and to always strive to get better. “Reach your goals and constantly set new ones; to keep moving forward is what life is all about!” said Goldstein.

Over 400 people gathered to celebrate mental health week at the VIBE Youth Art Gala on May 2, at the Vermilion Regional Centre.

“It’s important we remember that mental health is a part of each and every one of us, and one in four Canadians will experience a mental illness. We all need to continue working together to reduce the stigma,” said VIBE Coordinator, Pat Calyniuk.

Loads of activities included painting birdhouses and canvases, art journaling, zentangling, as well as making paper lanterns, foam and pompom animals, magnets, dream catchers, and buttons.

Attendees were also able to enjoy a photo booth, yoga, a zen garden, henna tattoos, and a visit over refreshments. Both children and adults appreciated the artwork, activities, and chocolate fountain.

Feature performer, Sam Lundell entertained the audience while they enjoyed viewing the 266 pieces of artwork on display.

“I like open events like this because I feel like you get to really engage with people making personal connections. Old Photograph Of Times Gone By

A historic old photo brought back memories for Bill Mayowski last week when he talked about the Texaco gas station he leased called Park View Service. He leased the gas station, which was located on the corner of 50th Street and 49th Ave in Vermilion, for 20 years from June 1969 until 1990.

“We are not sure but we think the original old building could have been built in 1934.

The Vermilion Cenotaph was built at the same time. My friend, the late Dave Holt, gave me the photograph a few years ago. It was hanging on his wall and he said take it!

It was a beautiful building and it was one of only a few in Canada that looked like that with the stone work on the front and it had a big stone fire place inside. It was all built out of local field stone and rock. There was only one other building I seen like it left in Banff.

I tried to buy it for years but Texaco wouldn’t sell it to me. Then Imperial Oil (Esso) bought out Texaco Canada. I was angry when Imperial Oil tore it down and I am still angry. They should have never ripped it down because it was such an old historic building,” said Mayowski.

Mayowski said that business was good at the gas station and that he never had to worry about getting business back then.

“I found Texaco a great company to work for and they sure treated me good!

Anytime I needed up grading they did it,” said Mayowski.

According to Wikipedia Texaco was an independent company until its refining operations merged into Chevron Corporation in 2001, at which time most of its station franchises were divested to the Shell Oil Company. It began as the Texas Fuel Company, founded in 1901 in

STUBBLE BURNING WITHIN THE COUNTY OF MINBURN The County of Minburn No. 27 has implemented Policy PS6 to control stubble burning within the County of Minburn.

CONDITIONS AS PART OF THE COUNTY OF MINBURN FIRE PERMIT: 1. Written confirmation of liability insurance for stubble burning will be required from the insurance agent or insurance company when a request for a fire permit to burn stubble is received from the landowner.

2. The permittee is totally responsible for the safe control of the burning herein authorized.

3. A minimum 50 foot cultivated fire guard is to be prepared (fire guard means an area around the proposed burn area where appropriate action has been taken to stop the spread of the fire to areas not meant to be burned).

4. A minimum of two adults must be in attendance at all times during the burn period.

5. A maximum of 40 acres is allowed to be burned in any one occurrence.

6. Burning cannot occur unless winds are under 12km/hr in order not to endanger any adjacent property, and wind conditions must be such that any smoke emanating from the burn will not create a road or public hazard.

7. Tractors and field implements capable of guarding the fire are to be in place at all times during the burn.

8. If burning is authorized within a ½ mile of a provincial highway, the permittee must post smoke hazard signs available from Alberta Transportation.

9. Burning permits should not be issued in the fall if it would leave the soil vulnerable to erosion.

10. The permittee must notify the County Fire Chief at least 1 hour prior to burning.

11. The permittee must abide by any regulations or conditions for stubble burning stated on the fire permit issued by The County of Minburn.

Note: "Stubble" means any harvested or unharvested herbaceous plants or plant parts, standing, spread or in swathed windrows grown on land.

Trout Pond Fully Stocked For Fishing

Fishing enthusiasts can get ready to cast their hooks in the Trout Pond at the Vermilion Provincial Park now that 1650 Rainbow Trout (each 8 inches in size) were released on May 1.

The trout were transpor ted to Vermilion on a truck from Ackenberry Trout Farm in Cold Lake.

A c k e n b e r r y Tr o u t F a r m s i s a supplier of certified disease-free Rainbow Trout fingerlings to stock ponds or lakes.

Ve r m i l i o n C o n s e r vat i o n O f f i c e r Gar y Walsh said that the Vermilion Trout Pond is now fully stocked and ready for use. “ We restock the pond every year, and it is a project funded by the Alberta Conservation Association.

All you need to fish here is a fishing license. Anyone from the ages of 16 – 65 years old can purchase the license at the Co-op gas station or online for just under $20. There is a catch limit of five fish per day.

The Trout Pond area was donated

by Mr. Claude Brennan years ago, he owned and farmed this land and said he would donate the area as long as a Trout Pond was built so people could learn how to catch fish, and this is what it’s all about,” said Walsh.

The Trout Pond is a man-made lake circled by a paved walking trail, with several benches around the perimeter for a quick rest stop or to enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Trout can be caught and cleaned on site at the fish hut.

“There is a lot of food in the pond

for the trout to eat all summer long but they do not sur vive the winters because the ice and snow cover the pond and there is no light g et ting through to the plants.

It ’s great that peo ple c an enjoy the Vermilion Trout Pond for a fishing excursion. There are many ways to catch trout; a good fly is one way.

They are tasty with garlic,” laughed Walsh.

Once a year we honour our Mothers on Mother’s Day even if they are no longer with us. On any given day a mother is a nurturer, doctor, protector, psychiatrist, provider and a leader of our lives.

A mothers job is never done. She does it 24 hours a day 7 days a week until the day comes she closes her eyes for her eternal rest; and even though the physical nature of her job is complete our memories of our mother continue to guide us throughout our lives, keeping her alive through our parenting.

Paying Tribute To Your Mom

editorials knows that I love and admire my Mom more than anyone else in this world. She has always been there for me no matter what the situation. She has stood by my side through some of the worst and best times of my life. She has sacrificed for me more times than I can count and for that, I will be eternally grateful. She has taught me how to be patient, kind and loving towards my children. She has taught me how not to judge my children’s choices and how to pass along my advice to them without totally alienating them.

A mother’s job is hard, and I hate it when people criticize a woman who chooses to be a stay at home mom. The comment of that is not a real job drives me crazy. How dare you speak such words until you do the job of a mother.

For t hose of you who have l ost your Mom, Mother’s Day can be hard.

Whether it is a recent loss or years ago, the loss of a Mother will always be felt especially with the omnipresent messages of Mother’s Day on social media and TV, but there are ways to help you manage your sadness.

Buy a Mother’s Day card; it is a great way to express your feelings. Visit the gravesite and bring flowers; it’s a way to pay tribute to your mom. Have you ever had a special lady in your life that was always there for you when your mom couldn’t be? Visit her; she would probably love to see you. You could prepare your mom’s favourite meal; it’s a great way to remember the memories you have shared with your mom and pass them on to your children.

Missing your mom especially on Mother’s Day is normal, embrace your feelings and remember your mom in whatever way helps you cope with your loss.

Pay tribute to your mom in whatever way works best for you, remember whether your mom is still here or passed on all any Mother needs to know is that they are loved.

I NEED, I go to Wainwright. I DO NOT buy groceries here unless they are on sale or I run out. I shop for value and I know my prices. I do not drive but have someone drive me on my trips to Wainwright for groceries. On average it cost $12 for a return trip (even at $103.9/litre) I fill up after every trip at the gas station locally.

People question when I tell them my costs

for groceries in Wainwright are 1/3 to 1/2 of those locally. I was a disbeliever too until I kept a record and have the receipts to prove it. So if prices come more into line here, I will buy groceries here. I do believe in shopping locally when able but for now it is too costly and I enjoy visiting with friends and neighbours at No Frills.

Library Book Sale

Bustling for book bargains, people streamed into the Vermilion Public Librar y during their Book Sale from May 2 – 6.

Library staff members were happy with the “great” turnout, and mentioned

having eager patrons as soon as the doors opened followed by a steady stream of visitors. The Book Sale has been running for over 10 years with the proceeds going back into Library revenue.

Young patron Shane Thomas said, “I like the book sale because I like

finding new books that I might like to read and because it challenges me to get reading.”

Another patron travelled from Myrnam to attend the Book Sale.

“I was looking for a particular brand and was thrilled to find so many good books,” said Marcel Laflamme.

We had a strange weekend a couple of weeks back; we had warm sunny par ts along with snow and pouring rain.

However, I spent most of it outdoors, enjoyed the sun and warmer evening on Friday while it lasted.

Spring is trying very hard to happen.

However it is May already, April slipped away very quickly and was one of the wettest Aprils I can remember, I am so far behind in yard work I just may cancel it. I have been trying to rake the lawn in a few areas, but between the snowdrifts and puddles I just can’t get at it, and I know as soon as we get a couple of sunny days the lawn will be knee high.

My garden is one big puddle, and it is going to take a while to dry out, if we keep getting moisture I don’t see the garden being in by the May long weekend, I know our farming neighbours need it to dry up also to seed the fields.

I am getting to spend a lot of time with the herd of fur baby’s. I don’t think I have seen the pups clean in all of April, they have been like big mops soaking up water every day if it weren’t

With the weird weather, we have been getting a lot of walks in, which is good for training the dogs as a team, I walk all four together and the stay together pretty well now, the young pups never stray too far and stick close to me. The latest addition Mr. Donka is starting to fit in nicely also, at first, there was a little issue with food and the other dogs getting too close, but for the most part, they have resolved that.

For a huge dog, Mr. Donka is really good with the pups Miss Noel and Sir Mukluk, but he doesn’t realize his big size at times and is like a bull in a china shop. At first Miss Oohohh and Mr. Donka had a “who’s the boss” issue, but that also appears to have worked out, and they are getting along very well also, I can’t wait to see how they all react in the sled team together.

According to the Injury Prevention Centre, head injury was the leading cause of death for quad riders and passengers between 2002 and 2013; there were 185 ATV-related deaths in Alberta in that period — an average of 16 per year, of the riders who died, 77 percent were not wearing a helmet. In many cases drivers were youngsters also, very sad in any case, we have lost several riders already this year.

Also, I do believe this is just the beginning though; I predict stricter training courses for owners and or riders. Just the sheer numbers of OHV or ATV’s in Alberta in past years have skyrock-

May, imbibing of spirits trending to about, oh…400% of normal, and the collective detonation of mass craziness that is playoff hockey in Alberta. Canadians don’t get called hockey ‘fanatics’ for nothing, and Alberta is ground central.

My younger years attending Oiler games were a few and far between experience, playoff time probably heard more on CHED radio with Rod Phillips calling goals while riding around with the ‘Boys’ (Dad and brother Gordon), outside helping do chores or travelling on weekends.

Actually watching games even on TV was not a guaranteed thing. But since I came up to the big city and got hitched, trips to a game became a much more frequent experience. Lucky for me…a ‘kind of’ first date spiralled into a 16 season gig parking cars for games right beside Gretzky Drive. So yes I have to readily admit, as a fan, I fell right into the lap and rhythm of being around the Coliseum on almost

every game night for years. Being in the right place, right time consistently meant many a game experienced on a ticket that had not found a home yet, and being ‘the guy’ when someone was looking for a late arrival parking spot. It was a great run while it lasted.

Speaking of runs…with Rodgers Place downtown now brings back being heavily immersed all those nights in the atmosphere that was the last Stanley Cup run in 2006. Except for the very end, the experience was nothing but magical… my lucky streak went critical as a chance all in on tickets that spring meant being at nearly every game that playoff. I probably was not the only Oiler fan that ran a small B&W TV with rabbit ears on an extension cord out into the backyard just so I could multitask on building a storage shed and not miss any of the action (didn’t we all do something like that?). This week I got to go to my first playoff game since

The Courage Canada Trail Ride attracts riders who travel with their h o r s e a n d wag o n fr o m a l l a c r o s s Alberta because they believe it’s an important cause.

Brain Injury Survivor, Curtis Anderson started the Courage Canada Trail Ride in 2004 in support of Brain Injury Awareness, and he has taken part in the ride every year since.

“Last year the trail ride generated $20,000 to help brain injury survivors and their families.

There will be people with a brain injury participating in this year’s trail ride, and it’s nice to give them a chance to be around horses,” said Anderson.

Cur tis’s personal stor y is inspiring because this event is part of his mission to give back after experiencing a life-changing brain injury. Anderson says he’s proud of what the event is today and the fact that it offers the oppor tunit y for sur vivors and their families to connect and have a special day out.

The more money we raise, the more we can help survivors. There is a lot of new interest and there is always a good turnout. then and even though we lost that night in OT, just getting to belt out ‘Oh Canada’ again in such glorious unison with my countrymen like we did with Paul Lorieau in 2006 and scream myself hoarse when Connor McDavid scored…what a rush.

The density of assault on the senses is certainly dialed to the maximum at a playoff game and it is almost impossible to translate it all into words. Watching on TV is exciting (and stressful) to say the least but being there is another level entirely and that is what makes it so great. The catalyst for the current craziness of that I have no doubt. Hopefully they keep it going because one of these days I’d sure finally like to cross paths with the Great One. If we all keep our sticks on the ice and our fingers and toes crossed, maybe they will go all the way.

Wouldn’t want to bet against Vegas, would we?

skills in metal shaping, custom painting and welding, among others. SRT graduates can challenge the auto body prepper apprenticeship exam to continue as an apprentice in this sector. The driver training program covers the Class 1 or 3 license for Alberta or Saskatchewan with qualified instructors who provide one-onone training.

Located in County Energy Park west of Lloydminster, Lakeland’s new industrial site will house the street rod technologies program in the fall, along with the driver training program.

The Vermilion Senior’s Centre hosted a joyous afternoon of singing on April 25, as the Happy Harmonizers welcomed choirs from Lloydminster and St. Paul.

Approximately 100 people gathered for the event that has seen area choirs gathering in Vermilion for many years each spring and fall.

“It was marvelous to see the good turnout with questionable spring

weather,” said Irene Wasylik.

Each choir group sang a collection of classic melodies, and people went on to enjoy tea and refreshments. On May 9, the Happy Harmonizers and Touch of Brass Handbell Choir will perform at the Vermilion Senior’s Centre at 7 p.m.

A donation to the food bank will serve as admission.

“We appreciate the support of the other choirs and community members,” said Irene Smith.

Children were eager to go on a hike during the Youth Wilderness Basics Course hosted by CLASS at the Vermilion Provincial Park on May 5.

Thirteen children registered for the course that was instructed by Conservation Officer, Gary Walsh. Throughout the day, Walsh covered a number of topics and encouraged children to use all of the senses to examine the space they were in.

“Our air is better than some places with a lot of cars and people because we try not to pollute it,” said Kataya Cooper after smelling the air at the park.

ing, and tasting things in the park as Walsh used the park as a classroom as opposed to one with four walls. According to Walsh, people tend to not use their senses enough.

Children discussed plants and animals including dif ferent bird species, extreme weather and how to make a poncho out of a garbage bag, compasses and how to use the sun if a compass is not available.

Participants were keen to get on the hiking trail, and learned how to make shelters, and how to safely light a campfire.

“The most important part of starting a fire is being able to put it out and not leaving it unattended,” said Kataya Cooper.

5 Tips For A DIY Home Garden

(NC) Spring may have sprung a little late this year, but here are some tips for a successful garden that will have you growing in no time: 1. C h o o s e yo u r g a r d e n s p a c e w i s e l y.

Since most garden plants need ample sunlight to grow, make sure that your garden is given every opportunity to succeed by being strategic with the growing conditions. Ensure you pick an area with direct sunlight for plants that need it. If you’re growing a vegetable garden, start small.

Some vegetables keep providing throughout the season, so you may not need as many plants as you think.

2. Build up your soil. Create a mound of organically rich soil in your garden before you plant. This will encourage a larger yield and an improved root system during growing season because there is less competition for nutrients compared to regular earth.

3. Be smart about spacing. Receive better

yields from each plant by paying close attention to how you arrange them. Avoid planting in square patterns or rows. Instead, stagger the plants in triangles which will let you fit more in. Just be careful not to space your plants too tightly — some won’t reach their full potential when crowded.

4. Extend your growing season. If you’re feeling really ambitions, add a few weeks to each end of the growing season by keeping the air around your plants warm even when the weather is cold by using mulches, cloches or row covers.

5. Aim for protection and comfort when gardening. Choose clothing that will guard you from the sun’s UV rays, is flexible for you to move around in, and is higher rise to provide you with coverage when you’re bent over the soil.

Lawn Care Tips For A Healthy Yard

(NC) Summer’s here, and it’s more important than ever to treat your lawn with some TLC. Watering, mowing, fertilizing and equipment maintenance are key components for crafting a beautiful green space.

The most efficient time to water your lawn is between 4 p.m. and 10 a.m. Your grass will benefit from one long soak each week, but monitor it to see what it needs. A good tip is if you step on your grass and it springs back, it doesn’t need watering. Consider installing a rain gauge so you can water with nature.

During the hottest months, let your grass grow taller to shade the soil and reduce water loss. When the roots become too hot or sunburnt, they struggle to survive. To grow longer grass, adjust your lawn mower to the highest setting and sharpen the blade to reduce stress.

While spring and fall are ideal seasons to fertilize, it’s not too late to do so in early summer. To provide essential nutrients and deter weeds and pests, select a fertil-

izer that fits your lawn’s needs and water a day or two before application. Once the grass has dried, apply fertilizer evenly across the lawn in a consistent pattern.

Water thoroughly so the fertilizer soaks into the soil, and avoid walking or playing on the lawn for the recommended amount of time on the label, which is usually a day or two.

Maintaining lawn equipment through annual DIY tuneups extends the life of your tools. While spark plug and air filter changes are still required, you’ll be surprised by the new lawn mower features on the market today. Canadian Tire, for example, has a new Yardworks self-propelled lawn mower with Briggs & Stratton’s Quiet Power Technology. The mower is up to 60 per cent quieter than other gas-powered mowers and doesn’t require oil changes — just check the oil and add when necessary.

With a little care and innovation, you’ll have a great lawn and time to spend doing what you enjoy most.

Young Chefs Battle It Out

Students held their cooking club Iron Chef cook-off on April 27 in the kitchen at J.R. Robson School. Parents, guests and students gathered in the training room for the judging feast after school.

There were three judges invited to taste and give feedback on each dish.

After tasting they voted on what they thought were the best flavors, taste and texture in the dishes.

The secret ingredient on the menu was rolled oats. The young chefs had to make what they could using the rolled oats showing originality and creativity. They each prepared, cooked and presented their dishes with attention to detail.

The cooking club is a par t of the Vermilion Wellness Coalition. Its aim is

to teach and inspire students to cook healthy meals and snack ideas, to develop new skills and build confidence in cooking in a fun and interactive environment.

Regional Skills Canada Qualifiers

Submitted High school and post-secondar y students from 80 communities will participate in the Provincial Skills Canada Competition in 45 trade and technology events.

The biggest Skills competition of the year will happen on May 10-11 at the Edmonton EXPO Centre. Over 700 students will participate in the two-day event, featuring 45 unique events ranging from Culinary Arts to Robotics, and Auto Service to Welding.

The Gold Medalists from the Provincial Skills Canada Competition will become part of Team Alberta and compete at the 2017 Skills Canada National Competition in Winnipeg, May 31 – June 1st.

“We are proud to be celebrating 25 years of inspiring Alberta’s young people to explore their interests, of helping them to develop their abilities, and of elevating their careers.” Notes Chris Browton, Executive Director, Skills Canada Alberta. “It is critical to ensure that Alberta’s future workforce is prepared to meet the demand for skilled trade and technology workers.”

The Provincial Skills Canada Competition features Skills City, Alberta’s biggest trade and technology career show. Fourteen Thousand career seekers and students can take part in interactive Try-aTrade® demonstrations, as well as visit with employers and recruiters, industry associations, labour groups, training institutes and government partners. Free admission and parking.

Over 850 high school students participated in nine Regional and Qualifying Skills Canada Competitions to earn a spot at the PSCC. Post-secondary students are selected by their technical institute to participate.

The event is made a reality, thanks to the donation of $3 million worth of tools, equipment and material from industry, labour and education supporters. They recognize that Alberta’s continued prosperity is dependent on the development of a highly skilled workforce.

Lakeland Apprentices Crowned Best Of The Best

Three Lakeland College apprentices have been named among the top apprentices in Alberta.

Carpenter Devon Froland, parts technician Samantha Niedzielski and heavy duty technician – transport trailer mechanic Dean Coulson were each honoured with a 2016 Top Apprentice Award during the 20th annual Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board Awards on April 21. They were among 62 recipients to be recognized for their level of skill and dedication to their trade.

“On behalf of Lakeland College, I congratulate Devon, Samantha and Dean for their leadership and excellence as

skilled tradespersons,” says Dave King, dean of the School of Trades & Technology.

“We are proud of their outstanding accomplishments and know they will continue to excel in their respective trades.”

Alberta’s annual Top Apprentice Award honours apprentices in each trade who achieved the highest overall marks in their final period of training, and received strong employer recommendations.

Niedzielski, a parts technician at Dennill’s Agricenter in Dewberry, Alta., was surprised to receive the provincial accolade. “It’s going to take a while for it to sink in that it’s a provincial award,” she says.

For Froland, being a Top Apprentice recipient is one of several accomplishments he’s achieved in the trade. He was

presented with the Alberta Construction participate in Alberta’s apprenticeship and Association Top Carpenter Award during industry training system. the banquet and last year he started his own carpentry business – Froland Contracting.

He’s also on track to finish building his first home in Amisk, Alta., before summer.

“I have to give a lot of credit for my work ethic to my boss at Holte Builders Ltd., and Lakeland College,” he says. “Lakeland offers a lot more hands-on training and you definitely learn a lot. I always recommend Lakeland to others and not just to people interested in being carpenters.”

Dean Coulson credits his 2016 Top Apprentice honour to hard work, studying and the instructors he learned from at Lakeland. “They were awesome, they know what they’re doing and are very helpful,” he says. “I just feel like you get the best education at Lakeland.”

B u f f a l o Tr a i l Public School showed its support of students’ exposure to different experiences as the division provided bussing to Tr y-ATrade held at the Lloydminster Exhibition Grounds on Wednesday, May 3. All Grade 10s in our school were in attendance at this very worthwhile event, making contacts with potential employers and working hands-on with various trade skills.

The last Parent Advisor y Council meeting of the year will be on May 29. At this meeting we look to elect the president for the upcoming school year.

On Monday, April 24, the Grade 9 students attended “It Can’t Happen to Me”. The goal of the annual program is to encourage youth to make good c hoices before get ting behind the wheel of a motor vehicle and appreciate the responsibilities they have while driving that vehicle. This event teaches

St. Jerome’s students and Vermilion Elementary students gathered together between their schools on Monday, May 1 in the middle of the track to celebrate Music Monday.

This year’s song, “Sing It Together”, is a collaboration between JUNO award winning, veteran songwriters Marc Jordan and Ian Thomas. The song focuses on the power of voices asking us to sing for joy, for truth, for healing and for freedom. The students really enjoyed learning this truly Canadian song as the video featured Inuit throat singing, Métis fiddling, indigenous drumming and children’s choirs in celebration of Canadian musical heritages.

Congratulations to all of the students from St. Jerome’s who entered art pieces into the annual VIBE Mental Health Art Gala, which was held Tuesday, May 2.

Students and staff enjoyed wearing their hats on Wednesday, May 3 as St. Jerome’s supported “Hats On for Mental Health” day. There were a wide variety of hats worn throughout the school.

The Grade 11 students had a wonderful two-day retreat at Camp Encounter on Tuesday, May 2 and Wednesday, May 3. They enjoyed all the activities, the meals, the wide games, the campfires and spending two days to build memories with their classmates. May 1 was Bus Driver Appreciation Day. VES would like to say thank you for the great job our bus drivers do in transporting students safely to and from school each and every day. If you see a bus driver, please thank them for the wonderful job they do.

VES has the wonderful opportunity to partner up with our community to create a Mosaic in celebration of Canada 150. On May 8 and 9, our gym will be the creation site for this community project. All VES students from Grades 1 through 5 will have the opportunity to paint a tile that will be incorporated into the final masterpiece.

In the month of May we will be learning about citizenship. We know our students already practice citizenship every day here at school and have created a bulletin board of pictures showcasing this. We are positive their citizenship extends to your homes and the community. We would like to add to our bulletin board with pictures of students outside our school walls practicing citizen-

Secondary students attended a production of Jane Austen’s Sense & Sensibility at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton on May 3.

The Grade 10 Foods class participated in a Masterchef competition to showcase their culinary skills. They chose teams, deliberated over ingredients from a mystery box, and created beautiful dishes full of flavour! All of the students demonstrated fantastic teamwork and creativity! The Masterchef winners were Fionn Dalton, Zach Polishuk, and Elizabeth Trynchuk.

VES students submitted 37 entries into VIBE’s Mental Health Art Contest this year.

All of this art was on display at the 5th VIBE Mental Health Art Gala on May 2. There were five VES students who placed in the top ten in their category: Keyen Murray, Reese Buchanan, Sydney Allen, Rachel Baughman, and Jennalee McDonald.

Congratulations to these students and to all who entered. Many VES families attended the gala and enjoyed a variety of free activities including painting, creating buttons, colouring bookmarks, and the very popular chocolate fountain.

Fourteen – year – old, Rhys Oliver has joined the Greater Edmonton Lacrosse Council and has been selected for the 2017 Bantam Team Alberta.

From Bonnyville, Oliver played novice and bantam lacrosse in the Wheatland League (a B League that Vermilion also plays in) and is now in his sixth year of lacrosse where he will compete in an A league with his team; the Edmonton Wizards. The division is comparable to AAA hockey and Oliver will be playing one or two calibres above what he is used to.

“The calibre of the sport is growing, and allowing athletes in this area to be noticed.

Team Alberta is the elite of the elite in Alberta and is the beginning of being recognized by professionals,” said Rhys’s father, Jody.

Other Wheatland players selected for Team Alberta in their divisions include midget Tyler Merilees from Lloydminster,

“I think the Wheatland League being recognized as a whole shows that our development process of athletes is going extremely well. The fact that a parity league is producing some of Alberta’s top athletes shows that there are both great players and great coaches in the league.

A lot of times players will have a drive and love for the game that is shown forth in their want to succeed. Last year, at Provincials, the Wheatland League was represented for the first time at every single division in the gold medal game (novice, peewee, bantam, midget, and junior).

“I love lacrosse because it is a really fast sport without many breaks. I enjoy stringing sticks to change the colours and make them throw different (like changing the curve on a hockey stick),” said Oliver, who has played hockey on the side.

“The love of the game makes the commitment to travel worthwhile,” added Jody Oliver.

Rhys Oliver went on to say that he has had to sacrifice a lot of free time travelling to Edmonton up to six times per week and Red Deer every second weekend for Team Alberta practices.

His short lacrosse season will be extended by one – two months by playing with Team Alberta and he is eager to improve his skills.

The most valuable piece of advice he received from a coach was when playing at the peewee level.

“If you’re getting scored on lots, it doesn’t matter,” repeated Oliver, who added that it was valuable because in lacrosse lots of times, scoring can get up into the double digits.

As for his own advice for younger players Oliver offered, “Don’t be afraid of working; lots of practice is going to Lacrosse player, Rhys Oliver, who made the 2017 make you better.”

2016-17 Vermilion Junior Curling Season In Review

(held in Vermilion) to Zones (held in Lamont). The Jackson team advanced to the finals, but just missed the medals. The Clyke team played in a close tiebreaker to qualify for the finals, and unfortunately did not advance .The boys team advanced to the finals and came away with a silver medal. This was an amazing accomplishment, and it was a thrill to see these boys curl better and better with each game they played. If there was an award for most improved team, this team would have won it! Congratulations boys! All senior high players were a credit to their school!

The Monday Night Junior Superleague was completed mid February. Winner of this league was the Jacob Swyripa team from Kitscoty (with Deryk Venance, Devin Orbeck, and Jenaya Swyripa). They now have their names engraved on the John Dach Memorial Trophy for the Junior Superleague and they will each receive a jacket. This was the Swyripa team’s fifth season in the Monday Night Junior Super-

league, so it was quite a thrill for them (and their fans) to win the league.

Junior curlers also participated in the Vermilion hosted Heather Nedohin curling clinic sponsored by the County of Vermilion River Gas Utility and the Federation of Alberta Gas Co-ops. Heather and helper Sarah Brown shared their skills and love for the sport with junior curlers and coaches.

Junior curlers also had the opportunity to visit the U of A Augustana campus in Camrose and watch Draw 7 of the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association National Curling finals hosted by Augustana at the Camrose Curling Rink. Augustana graciously provided a University tour, a meal at the cafeteria and tickets to the curling draw. Junior Curlers watched the Lakeland College teams in action (former Vermilion Junior Curlers Brandon Cookson and Travis Dow were among the curlers). Thank you to JR Robson School Bus Driver (and teacher) Mr. Zorniak, who looked after the paperwork to make this

trip possible.

The Carter Babij team (who played in the Monday Night Junior Superleague) won the Mixed High School Zone competition at Lamont. They went on to compete at Provincial High School Curling in Lethbridge, and though they never made it to the finals, the team won the Mixed team Sportsmanship award. Congratulations!

Junior Curling appreciates the support from the community for the Jim Smith Memorial Junior Bonspiel. The commitment from junior instructors (Justin Chase, Patrick Benoit, Charlotte Wasylik, Nick Wasylik, Alex Wasylik) as well as the support from parents and icemaker Rick MacKenzie helped make the 2016-17 Junior Curling year a success.

Curling is the Sport that Rocks! The 201718 Tuesday After-School Curling league will start the first Tuesday in November.

The Monday Night Junior Superleague will start shortly after that. Watch for details in the fall!

The Vermilion Junior Curling Tuesday After-School Curling league began the first Tuesday of November 2016 with excited returning curlers and expectant new curlers. It ended with a fun skills competition and pizza party the first Tuesday of March 2017. In between that beginning and end was a lot of learning about the sport of curling and then putting those skills into practice. Some of the curlers from the Tuesday After-School Curling league also participated in the Monday Night Junior Superleague. Curlers from both of these leagues competed in various bonspiels as junior teams and also with parents. Some bonspiels attended include: Vermilion Jim Smith Memorial Junior Bonspiel (won by the Lawson Clyke team), Islay Junior Bonspiel and Wainwright Junior Bonspiel.

Adult bonspiels include: Vermilion Men’s, Vermilion Mixed, and Vermilion Farmer’s as well as out of town bonspiels.

Junior curlers also went on to represent their respective schools at the junior high and senior high levels. St. Jeromes (Robert Thompson. Dawson Riley, Bodyn Riley, Carter Thompson) and JR Robson (Kera DeRoo, Indira Speck, Steven Bodurka, Austin Bodurka, James Matters) were the junior high teams that competed at the Highway 16 North competition in Marwayne.

The JR Robson team then went on to compete at the Buffalo Trail Public School Division junior high finals in Provost and did very well. At the high school level, JR Robson fielded a girls team (Marty Jackson, Danielle Fedirko, Shauna Weimann, Kera DeRoo, Indira Speck), a mixed team (Lawson Clyke, Alison Schmahl, Carter White and Cameron DeRoo) and a boys team (Jacob Bush, Gus Rattman (Rotary exchange student from Brazil), Brayden Winners Of The 2016-17 Monday Night Junior Superleague.
