Competitors vied for the bragging rights and the grand prize during The Good Life Institute’s Amazing Race in Vermilion on March 18.

“I love hosting this event because it’s a great way of highlighting our community. This event requires many working components and the community does an amazing job of coming together in order to guarantee its success. There are many volunteers that give their time to this project and without them it wouldn’t be the huge hit that it is.

Also, the level of passion that the teams portray is a great component to the day. People come into this event with a competitive edge and a enthusiasm for learning new skills in order to complete in the race. It’s an action packed day that guarantees a ton of fun.” said The Good Life Institute Coordinator, Candice Ander-

son.

The event saw 29 teams of 4, work to solve clues and complete various skill testing tasks.

“We were super stoked to be able to compete. It was our first time entering Vermilion’s Amazing Race and we weren’t sure what to expect, but it was a lot of fun,” said Doom Patrol Team Member, Joshua Lavigne, from Lloydminster.

Participants endured being put to the test performing a variety of challenges including paintball, archery, axe throwing, rock climbing, painting, pottery, robotics, yoga, dance, and anatomy.

“It was nice trying different activities you don’t do very often. Axe throwing was actually easier than I thought it would be,” said BHR Team Member, Julisse Ambrock, from Vermilion.

Organ And Tissue Recipient Signatures Required

Second Chance Trail Ride received their first recipient signature in their ‘150 in 150’ book showing that organ and tissue donation works at the Vermilion Super 8 on March 14.

Kidney and pancreas recipient, Patty Crawford, signed the book as the organization is attempting to gather 150 organ and tissue recipient names before Canada’s 150th Birthday on July 1.

Upon completion, the commemorative book will likely be displayed in one of the medical offices in Edmonton that recipients visit. Aside from a significant awareness outreach, the signatures gathered will create a very necessary support network.

The 2nd Chance Trail Ride Committee is currently working on obtaining more subsidized apartments in the St. Joseph’s University Dorms.

“Apartments are a big deal; allowing patients not to have to walk on icy roads after surgery or attend physiotherapy. Many times during physiotherapy, patients bond for life in that room,” said

Crawford has spent the past three years in and out of the hospital on the waiting list for medical appointments and surgeries; including stays at the apartments while on dialysis, and as a kidney and pancreas recipient. She recommended talking to your family about what they want regarding organ donation.

“You have resigned yourself to die and accept that you are going to,” said Crawford about the challenges she faced in the earlier part of her journey to recovery.

Craw ford is now thrilled with the opportunity to volunteer for 2nd Chance Trail Ride who had supported her during her transplants.

“You think of your donor at ever y special moment,” said Crawford who was recently elated to be able to watch her nephew play hockey for the first time.

The 2017 2nd Chance Trail Ride will begin on May 13, at 11 a.m. in Lindbergh, followed by a catered meal, a live and silent auction, and a dance in Elk Point. The trail ride is open to every-

We couldn’t put any of these events on without the community. I would like to thank Vermilion Super 8 Assistant Manager, Sandy Mackay for letting us host the signage campaign event here,” said Committee Member Fae Irvine.”

The Great Vermilion Fire Of 1918 school at the old brick school in the east end of town. They turned the school children loose and classes were canceled. My father and some of his classmates were put on duty stomping out the grass fires.

All of the buildings in town were built with cedar shingles, and when they started to burn the cedar shingles lifted up, landed and started grass fires. There was a high wind blowing that day and it was a dry April, with no great grass.

My father said they could hear bullets

hitting the wall of the freight shed where the ammunition was exploding, and that was a big problem for the firefighters. Everybody had guns in those days and the hardware stores were stocked with ammunition.

Firefighters and equipment were called from Mannville and Lloydminster; and they arrived on special trains because it was the fastest way they could get here,” said Kibblewhite.

Craig’s Department store in Vermilion was one of the buildings that burnt down.

Craig’s Owner John Stewart said that nothing survived the fire at Craig’s.

“The fire started in the Elk’s Hall as far as I remember people saying. The only two buildings left standing were located at Jack’s Barber shop, and where the Grace Asian Mart Filipino shop is located today.

Everything else was gone. The old Vermilion brick company supplied a lot of bricks to re-build the town afterwards. We made sure to re-build with brick instead of wood,” said Stewart.

April 11th of next year will mark 100 years since the devastating fire swept through Vermilion.

According to the book ‘Vermilion Memories II’, the fire destroyed 28 stores and 38 business firms. It burned from 3 p.m. until 7 a.m. the next morning on April 11, 1918.

It was recorded that over $350,000 worth of property was burned in the heart of the business district and that while insurance was carried, the loss involved was heavy.

Like many other communities on the prairies in the early years of the 20th century, Vermilion experienced an extensive fire.

Vermilion Heritage Museum ViceChairman Tom Kibblewhite says that the Museum is preparing for the 100th anniversary of the fire next year.

“We are planning to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the fire, we hope to do something with the Fire School, but nothing has been decided as of yet,” said Kibblewhite.

Multiple Course Demos At Lakeland College

Vermilion’s Lakeland College hosted prospective students and their families during Street Rod Technologies (SRT) and Interior Design (ID) events on March 17.

Both programs offered campus tours along with class demonstrations encouraging the hands on learning available from elite industry professionals at Lakeland College.

The ‘Get Fired Up For SRT’ shop tour was led by Instructor, Matt Newman.

Guests were shown the machines used to bend, stretch, and shrink sheet metal, paint equipment, and the tool room.

“The oldest remodel we’ve done was on a 1936 Chevrolet Coupe,” said Newman.

Examples were given on keeping up with industry standards including rivets originating in the aviation industry; the differences between mig, tig, and gas welding processes; and incorporating adhesives into the automotive procedures to avoid the shrinkage and warping that

occurs when metal cools.

“I really like being able to learn how to work on cars. The instructors are awesome and we get lots of hands on time spent in the shop. I’m hoping to be able to open my own restoration shop,” said current SRT student Travis Smith from Coleville, Saskatchewan,.

During the ‘ Design - c iting ’ Tour, prospective students had the opportunity to view where they would live, meet the instructors and student services staff, as well as see current student projects, field trips and design competitions.

The Lakeland College Interior Design pro gram i s re c o g nize d for hav ing students nationally awarded for the past 12 consecutive years. Lakeland College has the only Canadian design program endorsed by the National Kitchen and Bath Association.

ID Program topics include design, graphics, architecture and design history, textiles, drafting, construction and building systems.

Lakeland College also promotes their enjoyed viewing the facilities at Lakehigh employment rate upon students’ land College and a hands-on view of their completion of courses. Overall, guests prospective courses.

Breathe. Listen II Workshop taking place at the Vermilion Regional Centre on April 5 from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.

The original session was held in Vermilion last year with registrants from across the region being given tools to refresh and renew their roles as caregivers. Caregivers were challenged to improve the level of care they gave themselves to better care for others.

Certified Compassion Fatigue Educator, Bill Harder will be back in Vermilion to follow up with caregivers and encour-

age them to make choices ensuring positive change and long-term wellbeing.

This session will overview symptoms, but will focus on creating awareness on the blocks to wellness, as well as examining the roles of forgiveness and grief in maintaining a full supply of caregiver necessities. Harder will encourage selfawareness and well-being, as well as, encourage individuals to identify things that no longer nourish or sustain their growth.

“I want to dig deeper examining the two dynamics affecting our wellness; the internal and external barriers that exist in raising our level of wellness, and

the grief experienced by caregivers as a sense of failure or frustration.

I want to share the ways to process and navigate through grief. It fills my tank to encourage others to see their potentials; every human being has a light shining inside of them. It is awesome to be a part of making people see that they can make positive changes in our world,” said Harder.

Wild Bison Released Into Banff National Park

Wild bison are roaming the Banff National Park again for the first time in more than century.

According to Parks Canada, vast herds of plains bison roamed the Great Plains and some wandered into the eastern slopes of the Continental Divide for thousands of years. Although wild, freeroaming bison have been absent from the landscape for over a century, bison were historically dominant grazers that helped shape the montane and subalpine ecosystems of what is now Banff National Park.

At the end of January, Parks Canada translocated 16 bison (10 pregnant twoyear-olds and six young bulls) from Elk

Island National Park to Banff National Park.

Project Manager Karsten Heuer said that although the plains bison will be exposed to predators in the future, he believes they can still survive and coexist.

“This will be one of four places in North America where plains bison are exposed to their natural predators. It is an important long-term project for shaping the species, and in the long run we hope that they will integrate with the natural ecosystem including predators.

In the Yukon, where they reintroduced wood bison, it took 20 years before the wolves started queuing into bison as a food source. Last week we observed wolf tracks coming up to the meadow where

the bison are and I think it is foreign to these animals because it’s been so long since bison were on that landscape,” said Heuer.

The bison are currently in a soft release pasture for next 16 months, before they will be released in 2018 to roam freely in the reintroduction zone within Banff National Park.

“So far they are doing really well, and they look like they belong. The moving process has gone smoothly after years of research, preparations, and consultations with various groups.

Our Parks Canada staff continues to monitor the health of the herd and ensure the new arrivals have access to food and water. I am amazed at how quickly they revert to their natural instinct. Already I

have watched them chasing off coyotes; I don’t doubt for a moment that they won’t display protective behaviour if they have an encounter with wolves,” he said.

To date Parks Canada has committed $6.4 million to the plains bison reintroduction project in Banff National Park.

“With a species translocation there is a necessary adjustment period as well as learning how to adjust, and Parks Canada are global leaders in teaching people how to coexist with wild animals.

Considering the 4 million plus visitors we have in Banff National Park each year, and the 60 plus grizzly bears we have, I think our track records is pretty darn good. Now we look forward to bring bison under the same umbrella as well,” added Heuer.

Over the last week we have been blessed with warm weather conditions, and while it has been a joy to walk outside not bundled up, there are still some icy patches. The snow has been melting and freezing causing some slippery sidewalks and roads, but looking out the window today the snow seems to be disappearing quickly. Hopefully, we will not have to worry about it for much longer.

The Weather Network is showing daytime temperatures above zero for the next 14 days, but dropping to the minus side in the evening and nighttime hours, so be careful if we do happen to receive precipitation in the form or either snow or rain.

Nice Weather Can Cause Falls

As a business owner or apartment building owner/manager, it is imperative to maintain your sidewalks and parking lots during inclement weather; clear, shovel, salt, and continue to clear, shovel, and salt the best you can! It’s good for your business, and it’s good for your customers.

A few ways we can try and help keep ourselves in an upright position instead of spending most of our time on our bums or hands are kind of basic, but in our busy everyday lives when we are hustling here, there, and everywhere we have a tendency to forget the things we know.

On a personal level, there are a few things we can do to help keep ourselves safe: F i r s t , s e l e c t p r o p e r f o o t w e a r.

Women especially are the evil doers when it comes to this one simple rule (I watched a lady in Lloyd last Tues-

day trying to get across a parking in three-inch skinny heels) it was funny to watch, but I did worry about her at the same time. Heels are not meant for maneuvering over uneven snow/icy parking lots. Flat footwear with rubber soles provides better traction on ice and snow than leather-soled or highheeled shoes.

If you see a handrail use it, it’s one of the best ways to prevent slips and falls on areas that have slight or steep grades and on stairs; it’s there for a purpose, so why not utilize it.

Getting in and out of your car is one of the biggest fall risks. We often have a false sense of security around our vehicle and don’t pay attention to where our feet are going.

The biggest prevention of a fall is to pay attention. We need to scan the areas in which we are walking and if you see anything that shines, has water on

it, has visible ice or snow, slow down and take care of your footing.

If you do happen to take a fall, try to fall on the most padded areas of your body, and try to keep your muscles relaxed as it can help prevent injury. It may seem a little weird as it is human nature to catch yourself with your hands but it’s better to catch yourself on the part of your arms between your wrist and elbow, it’s meatier and can take the impact better than snapping your wrist.

Our elderly are at the biggest risk of falling during these thaw and freeze times in our community, so offer a helping hand if you see a senior out and about and trying their best to maneuver around the icy conditions. Offer to carry their packages to their vehicle as the extra weight can distrupt their balance.

It may look like Old Man Winter is loosening his grip on us, but without warning, he can hit us again at any time.

The students of J.R. Robson School listened to Curtis Anderson’s life story as he explained about living life after a brain injury.

Anderson told the children of how he lost his balance bull riding and was then struck in the head by the bull he mounted at 27-years-old.

Anderson has made a significant recovery since then and is a public speaker and inspiration to many today.

“After my accident, I spent months at the hospital where I learned how to walk and talk again. I started all over again in every aspect,” explained Anderson to the students of J.R. Robson School.

Anderson required the assistance of two nurses to get out of bed each morning and a wheelchair to get around.

Over time, Anderson began to walk on his own again.

“Today I’m going to show you guys what I can do with my left arm, it might not seem like a big deal to you, but in the beginning, I had to move my left arm with my right arm,” said Anderson.

He demonstrated to the students the extent of his improvement by picking up a cheese slice off the ground and taking the wrapper off entirely with his left hand.

“In the fall of 2010 I regained my driver’s license. I am seeing improvement all the time, so life gets better that way all the time. One thing I am really proud of is that I can come out here today and talk to you guys creating brain injury awareness. I hope that you guys will take care of your brains and wear a helmet all the time,” said Anderson.

After his presentation, he took questions from students and teachers.

“What did you miss the most after your accident,” questioned one student.

“I missed bull riding. But I still watch it should be. I’m still involved in rodeo rodeos, and judge each ride to see just in a different capacity,” answered how close I am to what the judges think Anderson.

daylight leisure time combined with time in the outdoors is a huge asset and a big selling point for me, as you would think it should be for any working man or women.

I spend a lot of time outdoors lately regardless of what the c lo c k says when the weekend comes its sunrise to sunset wit h t he team, an d new puppies and they are raring to go nonstop.

I took the pups to the vet last week, for booster shots and normal checkups. My Sir Mukluk had gained 12 lbs in 12 days, and at 12 wks. was over 40 lbs, and our veterinarian Dr. Judy mentioned he was not overweight in fact thin for his body size and is of monster proportions for his age. He eats non-stop, I have them on a half/ half puppy chow dog food and meat diet, with the puppy chow store bought food they have a huge stainless buffet style ser ving tray always full. Meat is mixed, cut into serving sizes, and some is cooked in a stew like a warm meal, so they eat constantly and very good.

Dr. Judy was also concerned that Miss Noel was so much smaller than Sir Mukluk as littermates.

I mentioned Miss Noel was in standard Alaskan Malamute size for her age, and in fact was even on the large side of standard, it is just that as a male pup Sir Mukluk is a chunk. So with Sir Mukluk being “ thin” and Miss Noel being “Small,” slightly loose terms for both, we are mixing the puppy chow with full grown adult dog food for more sustenance and weight gain, so this should be interesting.

I am writing this an hour early today, now that DST - Daylight Savings Time is back. If you have been reading this column in past years you will know I am a fan of DST; I do like this time zone best.

At this time, just a day af ter the change it is still dimly lit and pre sunrise out there, but soon we will have nice morning sunrises and as a bonus an extra hour of daylight before sunset, and soon the working force will have daylight morning and afternoon pre and post work.

Some of our provincial NDP MLA’s ar e t a l k i n g a b o u t a b o l i s h i n g DST completely. Without being completely politically IN-correct, I will just stay away from politics completely.

However, there are other ML A’s in Alberta that opt to stay with DST all year round.

So we have those that just hate the time change only because it disrupts their routine or internal clock, and some are just plain outright nast y about losing that hour of sleep, so many are for just one-time zone without change regardless of whether it’s DST or standard time.

Saskatchewan runs off Central Standard Time –CST, and do not change the clocks back or ahead during the year, with us changing to DST we are now the same time as Saskatchewan.

Most of British Columbia -BC is on Pacific Standard Time –PST, and do also observe DST; so when their clocks change ahead, they are only one hour behind us. The catch is, if we stay with DST or CST which is the same presently BC would be two hours behind if they were to switch back to standard time, so there would be a two-hour time change just crossing the border, one can see a few issues with that.

Now it is my opinion regardless of what time zone we are stuck with, meaning not change from either standard time or daylight saving time we will r un into is sues with so meo ne somewhere; heck I am still having issues with Canada’s change from Imperial to Metric. The change for a nyo n e t h at s p e n d s a l o t o f t i m e outdoors the adoption from Fahrenheit to Celsius came quickly, as one got to know what temperature in Celsius you were freezing your butt off very fast. But I still have many issues with measurement or weight, yet those ten years younger than me do not even know imperial standards, so in time, with time, we will all adapt.

We also determined that yours truly may be a factor in that thinness due to over-exercising; seems that I am running those energy packed pups into the ground with too many adventures, meaning I most likely walked them too much, those then shor t legs in deep snow, etc., so gathering all that firewood and all the walking in deep snow would have to be minimalized slightly.

The pups, however, are now at the stage that if you don’t keep your eyes on them every second they are gone in a flash, plus they no longer follow me, I have to pick up the pace just to follow them. So we would just walk into the big duck pond surrounded by trees, sit and watch them entertain themselves, their play and antics brought on quite a few laughs, but after an hour just sitting there got chilly. That wind in the minus 20’s C of late has been nipping at any bare skin, so I decided to do something to keep busy and perhaps protect myself from the wind a little.

On our firewood adventures, there were hundreds of smaller wrist size standing dead poplar trees, on the small size for firewood, so I decided to use and clean those up surrounding the duck pond. I was going to make a wilderness survival shelter; I made it a point not to use any man-made tools or material like string, wire or nails, just what was on hand, a much easier chore in evergreen forests as we have big fluffy limbs off trees like the spruce.

The best here would be what we call a debris shelter; I made the main frame

a lean-to style with strong Y forked trees bracing the center ridge, it was so strong I could hang my body weight off the frame. The wrist size standing dead trees made up the rest of the frame very nicely, now for roofing the only material without evergreen trees is leaves grass, etc., I decided on leave and grass at first.

Even with the pups help to dig for leaves and to pull normal prairie grass was much more a chore than thought, as I worked, I watched the pups play in the pond and dig up knee high swamp grass quite easily. The swamp grass was perfect, easier to pull taller, flatter and nice and soft, so soon we had the roof fully covered, then with an ice cream pail size log at the base of leanto trees, we filled in a very thick bed.

The process took several days but was perfect, the shelters back to the wind, front into day long warm sunshine and a place to sit or lay down out of the element…it was really perfect. That is until Miss Oohohh came to snuggle and lay with me in the shelter and the pups thought they were missing out on something, of course, they ran through the sides, pulled grass out and were a destructive force worse than nature.

But even with the whirlwind pups passing through it’s still standing, a great place to sit, enjoy and watch; and one of these weekends bring the family down for weenie roast by the campfire and enjoy the outdoors.

When The Smoke Clears Time regardless: it priceless, but best spent right, but if you lose it… you will never get it back!

A Trip To Calgary

I ’m w r i t i n g t h e column this week the night before I’m about to take a trip to Calgar y for the weekend as my oldest daughter is p laying at In d o or Soccer Provincials again this spring. Not an uncommon trip…I’ve travelled to Calgary often since the early 90’s, visiting friends or basing myself from there working on roads around Southern Alberta. Many of my wife’s relatives are still down around Calgary…an Aunt by Delacour is about to get invaded again. Since I got married the trips certainly grew more frequent

as the wife was involved in a family food business working for many years at the Stampede. Much of late June and early July every year was spent in sight of the Saddledome. So…a connection to Calgary has been frequently maintained (though as a Northern Alberta boy I am not fond of its sports teams), but little did I know until recently how far that familial connection went back.

Since Dad passed I’ve been able to go through some of his things a little more granularly and came across an old black and white studio picture of his Uncle Herman Wolters as a young man taken in Des Moines, Iowa. He looked to be in his late 20’s or early 30’s and I had never seen it before. Only knowing “Uncle” as a rather grizzled and crotchety bachelor in his 70’s who lived at times in our basement and smoked Colts cigarellos, I never realized how much resemblance I had to him at that younger age (dimples notwithstanding). In the process of trying to lift the card cover frame from atop the photo, I dislodged a piece of paper that had been

folded and tucked in completely behind the picture itself. Looking at it and how it was concealed…I thought probably no one has seen or known about this paper for a very long time. It was a receipt for registration for the Military Service Act of 1917…maybe better known as ‘Conscription’. Being a military history buff I knew what it was and what it meant. The crisis 100 years ago in 1917 on the issue of Conscription nearly caused our country to split in two when the imposition of it resulted in violent riots and some deaths.

Having never had the topic enter any prior conversation with Dad or Herman, it had me pondering what Uncle would have been going through as a 19 year old man being mandated to make the trip all the way from Tolland to Calgary to register. The slip was dated June 4th, 1918 …so much later in WW1, the German Spring Offensive beginning in March 1918 blunted but not completely played out and the outcome of the war still somewhat in doubt. The casualties and carnage mounted to that point would sober anyone being conscripted into

Last week I talked a bit about the benefits a sir t1 food. These are plant based foods that researchers have discovered will switch on sirtuin activators, aka, flip the switch for longevity, fat burning and weight loss the same way exercise does. Skirt foods are also known to increase longevity in laboratory studies. A research review from the University of Kiel published in the Journal of Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity indicates that it is the polyphenols in the sirt1 foods that account for the decrease in cardiovascular disease. Their review recommends including a variety of sirt1 foods

Exciting trips are a part of what Girl Guides is all about. For the fun – yes, but also for the experience. Taking girls, and teaching them about travel: how to pack, be away from home, try new things, stay in interesting places, knowledge of new foods.

Pushing girls to grow into their future amazing selves!

Vermilion Girl Guides started planning for a Jasper trip last fall. We sold some cookies, and also some pizza to earn the funds, and then organized a four-day adventure over teachers’ convention. The girls are encouraged to learn responsibility while having to work for the excursions, and they are also very involved in the planning of each trip.

The drive to Jasper was long, but with a few stops along the way, it was bearable.

We stayed at a hostel (a new experience for all) and found it to be quite enjoyable.

More study is needed for scientists to fully understand the workings of sirtuin activators in our food.

So far there are over twenty foods identified as sirt1 foods that are known to be beneficial sirtuin activators. Here are some of the know foods to date: Black currents, dates, buckwheat, olive oil , kale, capers, celery, cocoa, coffee, green tea, parsley, strawberries, blueberries, walnuts, apples, turmeric, organic soy, pomegranate, dark chocolate and red wine being among the list. Using a few foods from the list I have developed a sirt1 dark chocolate brownie that is gluten free, sugar free and full of sirt1 goodness. Does it taste

like a regular brownie? Well not exactly, but it is guilt free and full of healthy ingredients.

A really neat icing trick I just discovered is to place squares of a chocolate bar on the hot cake. The squares will quickly melt and then can be easily spread as the icing. I also tried using squares of both milk chocolate and dark chocolate for an interesting marbleized effect on the cake. Be sure to cut the pan of squares when you are finished icing, if you are icing it with a chocolate bar, as it hardens when cooled and is then harder to cut.

Girl Guides Visit Jasper!

Bunk style beds, communal bathroom, and a lovely kitchen equipped with cooking equipment and dishes for all. The girls played games and built puzzles in the large gathering area, which also sported a lovely fireplace.

Dog sledding was our first adventure – and it was so worth the extra drive into BC. We spent two hours petting and playing with the dogs. This time included a 10 km run with six dogs pulling six different sleds through a picturesque landscape. A bit scary at first, as the dogs were loud and impatient to start, but once you got going – it was an incredible experience. Many smiles and boosted confidence all around.

Another highlight of the trip was the Maligne Canyon Ice Walk. We toured along the frozen river, looking up at all the amazingly beautiful frozen waterfalls. A white landscape, with steam coming off open water areas. The frozen structures

were serene, and the colours were magnificent.

Everybody got in some shopping time in Jasper. The girls found the candy stores and loaded up on treats. Others splurged on onesies, backpacks, and gifts for family members. We had some great food, both

3/4 cup buckwheat flour 1/2 package dates , boiled in 1/2 cup coffee or water 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/2 cup apple sauce Ice with melted chocolate bar (dark chocolate preferably) In a saucepan, add the dates and 1/2 cup of coffee. Cover and heat until the dates are softened, (about 5 minutes), then allow to cool. In a food processor add in the eggs, olive oil, butter, applesauce, turmeric and the cooled dates and mix. Add in first the cocoa powder and then the buckwheat flour. And mix.

Bake in a greased 8 x 8 pan at 350 degree for 25 minutes. Place square of a dark chocolate bar on the warm cake and spread when melted. Cut into 16 squares. Store refrigerated.

Lakeland College Submitted

Close to $1.5 million in awards, scholarships and bursaries will be distributed to Lakeland College students by the end of the 2016-2017 academic year.

Generous donor support, including seven new donors, will see more than 1,500 students benefit from the student awards program this year. To thank donors for their support and congratulate recipients on their achievements, Lakeland College hosted donor celebration ceremonies in Lloydminster on March 8 and Vermilion on March 14.

“At Lakeland, student leadership is at the heart of what we do. But we don’t achieve that on our own. For more than 100 years, we’ve partnered with incredible donors to make sure our students have a brighter future,” says Alice Wainwright-Stewart, president of Lakeland College. “For every donor we are proud to thank, there is a unique reason that inspires them to help Lakeland students excel and take the lead.”

For Delia Morgan-Tetz, Class of 2002 and 2007, giving back to Lakeland students is how she “pays it forward.” At the age of 22, Morgan-Tetz enrolled at Lakeland College to achieve her goal of pursuing a career in business to provide for her three-yearold daughter. She completed the marketing, advanced business administration and

university transfer programs. Morgan-Tetz also worked for Lakeland’s development department, where she learned how significant donations are to both students and post-secondary institutions.

“Funding from the government only goes so far, which is why donor support is so important. As donors, we believe in you and your passion, and want to pay it forward,” Morgan-Tetz said during the Lloydminster campus donor appreciation celebration.

“You too can pay it forward someday and impact the life of another, like your life has been impacted by a donor today. For me it is important to give back to an experience that changed my life.”

Today, Morgan-Tetz is the marketing coordinator for Agland Lloydminster and serves on one of Lakeland’s advisory committees. She created Donor celebrationthe Walking by Faith – Morgan-Tetz Family award in 2013, which is available to any student enrolled in a business administration program who shows determination in the face of adversity and academic achievement. Last year, she and several of her former classmates established the Phil Allen Memorial Scholarship as well.

“It’s an honour and privilege to give back,” says Morgan-Tetz.

Thanking donors for their outstanding support during the Vermilion campus donor celebration was Casey Finstad, a thirdyear agricultural sciences student. Finstad completed the western ranch and cow horse program in 2014-15 and then returned in fall 2015 to take the animal science technology program.

“As students at Lakeland College, our education is not limited to our courses and classroom studies. We are taught to be leaders, innovators, and high achievers,” said Finstad during her address. “The

college instructors and staff have instilled these qualities in us since we first stepped foot at this college, and they have become second nature for many of us.”

Finstad’s involvement in her program and campus life are extensive. She is the general manager of Lakeland’s first Student-Managed Farm – Powered by New Holland livestock research team. She is also a member of the Rustlers rowing team and is the finance officer for the Vermilion campus Students’ Association.

For her academic and student leadership achievements, Finstad was recognized with multiple awards, including the ARAMARK Canada Ltd. Award, Centennial President’s Leadership Award and Centennial Agricultural Sciences Achievement Award.

Donor Celebration “I am proud to be a Lakeland College student,” she says. “In my three years of studies here I have been pushed out of my

comfort zone to become who I am today. I have been honored with these leadership opportunities. One of the greatest lessons I have learned is that one of the most important parts of being a leader is also being a team player.”

During the campus celebrations, a total of 1,033 students were recognized with awards, scholarships and bursaries valued at $1,155,891. Another 503 students benefited from the Saskatchewan Advantage Scholarship program, which distributed $251,254 in scholarships to eligible Saskatchewan grads attending Lakeland.

And there are still more awards to be presented to students before the end of the 2016-17 academic year that will bring Lakeland’s student awards program total close to $1.5 million.

Ten years ago – in the 2006-2007 academic year – the total value of Lakeland’s awards program was $468,089.

Children were ecstatic to receive high fives and hugs from Scholastic Mascot; Clifford the Big Red Dog during the Vermilion Elementary School’s Scholastic Book Fair held March 14 - 20.

The Clifford children’s book written

by Norman Bridwell was published in 1963 and has been entertaining readers for over 50 years. Clifford is now seen in an 80 book series as well as on television.

The Book Fair offered a variety of hands-on learning books, a range of preschool to mature reads, as well as a selection of school tools and posters.

Shannon Leonard, Debra DeRoo, Nicki Ryan, Deanna Zubiak, Brit Feist, Judy Smith, Sydney Allen, Natalie Symes, and Lynnal Barton for volunteering as well at the Library Club. I would also like to thank the community for their generous support of our Book Fair; it is the major fundraiser for our School Library/Learning Commons.

Our students earned ‘ B ook Fair Bucks’ through the Accelerated Reading Program, so for the points they had earned reading, they received actual dollars. Senior members of the Vermilion River Archers will be attending the Alberta Bowhunter’s Convention on March 25, in Nisku.

“The local club acts as an arm of the provincial bow hunting association. We were around when bow hunting was in its infant stages.

We lobbied to have province-wide bow hunting which came into effect in the early 1980’s. We helped alter regulations so members were allowed to wear camouflage clothing instead of orange.

We lobbied to have youth involved and were the first club to offer youth tags allowing 12-year-olds to hunt. Now

we are getting geared up for the outdoor shoot, pending the weather, which is an activity the youth always enjoy!” said Orest Popil.

A couple of the youth who attended the March 6 archery practice, were Beaudon and Aaralyn Tupper.

“We named our children after ‘Bow and Arrow.’ They just started archery this year, and it is usually a family event; something we can all do together. We are considering travelling for youth competitions. The coaching staff are very patient and good with the children,” said their father, Brandon Tupper.

“In our garage we have a target set up for extra practice,” said eager archer, 8-year-old Aaralyn Tupper.

Jacejko also added that the family who adopted the Habitat for Humanity home last year are well settled in now, and all of the work on the house has been completed and the Vermilion community now has two Habitat for Humanity homes.

The Vermilion Credit Union Midgets won the NEAHL Tier 1 league banner on April 18, during their game against Lac La Biche. The score was 12-0. It was a best of 3 game series and they swept the series with a total game point score of 22 goals for and 0 goals against.

The Midgets are now off to represent Zone 2 in Hockey Alberta’s Midget A Provincials in Strathmore on March 23-26. The team has only had two losses this year in their Tier 1 league and they hope to carry that forward in the Provincial A tournament this weekend!

Heartworks Studio Vermilion’s Hidden Gem

The large open windows overlooking the Vermilion Airport runaway creates a spacey relaxing feel at the Heartworks Studio.

The sound of Norah Jones plays in the background as Heartworks Art Instructor Cindi Plant lays out materials preparing for her students to arrive for the next class.

The walls of the studio are filled with colourful vibrant art work tucked away in the back of the Vermilion Airport building.

Plant said she started Heartworks Studio for her love of teaching, and because she wanted to try a new teaching style. After teaching design at Lakeland College for 30 years she says there is now a new freedom in her work.

“It’s totally different compared to when I was teaching at the college; it was curriculum based and I had a set structure to teach all the time. It’s less restricted here; I do my own thing,” said Plant.

Plant currently teaches Batik Adult Classes and Spring Art Classes for the 7-10 age groups.

“My students are all very interesting. I

don’t like to make generalizations about the people who attend my classes; it might be somebody who is intrigued and wants to try something new and there are those who are quite accomplished, and there are those who are looking for a new hobby. It’s just playing, it’s just fun.

The whole premises with the children is to introduce them to a wide variety of art media, it’s more ‘let’s try this, let’s do water colour today. I would say my approach is experimentation.

I always have a set lesson but I let my students be free; it’s open ended. I give new projects all the time, I use the same technique but I always try to give my students something different. There are so many talented people in this town,” said Plant.

The Vermilion Library will be showcasing a student art show running from May 9 until the end of May. Plant also creates her own artwork and will be showing her work at the Vermilion Art Show next month.

Minister’s Award for Excellence Nominee

It has been an exciting year for the Mannville Centennial Public Library.

Earlier this year we were nominated for the 2017 Minister’s Award for Excellence in Public Library Service.

The service nominated is the Electronic Community Bulletin Board, which has been in operation in the library since May 2016. Local communit y organizations have utilized the service since the beginning, and as word of it has spread, so has the involvement of surrounding communities. The large screen television was funded by the

Mannville, Minburn, Innisfree FCSS and installed behind the circulation desk at the librar y. This placement gives patrons and other visitors to the library an excellent viewpoint to see what is happening in the community.

We take pride in our librar y and all it has to offer. The nomination for the Minister’s Award of Excellence in Public Librar y Ser vice reinforces the positive impact we have on the community and surrounding area. With that being said, this nomination has made us eligible for the YOU Libraries Award. This award is determined by popular vote only and is open to all

residents of Alberta.

Voting takes place online the last week of March. Votes can be cast from Monday, March 27 at 8:30 a.m. until Friday, March 31 at 4:30 p.m. at www. laa.ca/youaward. Flying Squirrel Spotting in Vermilion This furry creature was spotted at Heather and Maurice MacMillan’s bird feeder on March 14.

These squirrels usually live in coniferous and mixed coniferous forests across much of Canada. They are light brown with pale under parts and grow to a length of 10 to 15 in. They are good gliders but clumsy walkers on the ground. They feed on a variety of plant material as well as tree sap, fungi, insects, carrion, bird eggs and nestlings.

Unlike most members of their family, flying squirrels are strictly nocturnal.

These rodents have thick light brown or cinnamon fur on their upper body and greyish fur on the flanks and whitish fur underneath. They have large eyes and a flat tail. They can also be identified by their long whiskers, common to nocturnal mammals.

Flying squirrels do not actually fly, they glide. From atop of trees, flying squirrels can initiate glides from a running start or from a stationary position by bringing their limbs under the body, retracting their heads, and then propelling themselves off the tree. It is believed that they use triangulation to estimate the distance of the landing as they often lean out and pivot from side to side before jumping. Once in the air, they form an "X" with their limbs, causing their membrane to stretch into a square-like shape and glide down at angles of 30 to 40 degrees. They maneuver with great efficiency in the air, making 90 degree turns around obstacles if needed.

Just before reaching a tree, they raise their flattened tails which abruptly changes their trajectory upwards, and point all of their limbs forward to create a parachute effect with the membrane in order to reduce the shock of landing. The limbs absorb the remainder of the impact, and the squirrels immediately run to the other side of the trunk or to the top of the tree in order to avoid any potential predators.

Although graceful in flight, when on the ground, they prefer to hide rather than attempt an escape from a predator.

Farmers Fighting Climate Change With The Power Of Science

(NC) Organizations and govern ments around the world are working together to tackle climate change.

Some industries, like agriculture, are likely to feel the heat of the changing climate sooner than others.

As temperatures rise and ex treme weat h er eve nt s like dr o u g ht s an d floods become more frequent, farmers face more unpredictable and difficult growing conditions.

Ian Affleck, executive director of plant biotechnology at CropLife Canada,

says plant science technology will play an important role in helping farmers around the world to produce enough food to feed the growing global population as climate change continues.

“Without the help of tools like pesticides and biotech crops, the production of some of the world’s most important crops like wheat, rice and corn could drop significantly, which would have a devastating impact on global food security,” says Affleck.

He added that new varieties of crops

developed through plant biotechnology will also help. Both heat and droughttolerant crops are in development, with drought-tolerant corn already being grown.

“Science is also helping us develop nitrogen-efficient crops that allow farmers to reduce their inputs while still producing a healthy, abundant crop,” says Affleck.

Crop protection products can also h e l p far m er s s t ave of f n ew p e s t s and diseases that move into their

geographical areas. These pesticides and biotech crops together enable farmers to adopt conservation tillage practices, meaning they don’t need to go over their fields with machinery as often to control weeds. This improves soil health and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

“If we’re going to feed nine billion people by 2050 with the ef fects of climate change looming, we’re going to need all the tools at our disposal,” says Affleck.

Green was the colour of choice on Friday, March 17, as St. Jerome’s celebrated St. Patrick’s Day. Many elementary classrooms created Leprechaun Traps, but alas no little green Irish elves were captured. Other classes researched the history of St. Patrick’s Day and learning about St. Patrick. Many creative art projects were also created around this theme.

March 14th - 3.14 - Pi Day. Students in Mrs. Dieken’s Math 10 class celebrated Pi Day. Students listened to facts about Pi, songs about Pi, answered trivia about Pi and finished off the celebration eating Pie. Some even entered into a Pie Eating contest. Congratulations to Reanna taking 1st place eating 14 pieces, Tanner eating 12 pieces, and Brea for eating nine pieces of pie.

The 2017 St. Jerome’s Graduation Class invite you to join them for their annual Pancake Breakfast sponsored by the Knights of Columbus on Sunday, March 26 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Elks Hall. The Basketball Season at St. Jerome’s has finished with the Spartan Sr. Girls and Jr. Girls both ending their seasons with Silver placing at their last tournaments. The Jr. Girls won silver at Highways 16 Championships and the Sr. Girls played in Zones at Paradise Valley losing a hard fought battle to Glendon bringing home silver. Thank you to Ms. Partington and Ms. McDermott for all the time and energy they have given the girls teams this season. Also thank you to the staff and parents who drove and supported all the teams.

The Elementary kicked off their “Jump Rope for Heart” on Wednesday, March 8 when Alisha and David from the Heart and

Stroke Foundation visited St. Jerome’s.

Along with a handful of grade five volunteers they put on an energetic and enthusiastic demonstration getting all the students excited about skipping and raising money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. St. Jerome students will be collecting money throughout the month of March. The final Jump Rope Event will take place on Friday, March 31.

It was a privilege to welcome Father Matthew to our school as this year’s Lenten Guest Speaker on Tuesday, March 14. Due to meningitis as a child, Fr. Matthew is deaf –– the first deaf man ordained a Priest in Canada ––, though he speaks well. This brings him a totally different perspective and he joyfully brings that into his ministry. He came to Edmonton as a young man nearly 10 years ago because of Archbishop Smith’s relationship and openness to the deaf community. Fr. Matthew shared with the students how he sees his deafness as a gift from God so he can share Jesus with others in the deaf community.

The Grade 9 Indigenous Studies Class is studying a variety of aspects of the Canadian Indigenous Peoples. They even had an opportunity to make beautiful Dream Catchers.

Elementary students received their term two report cards on Friday, March 17 and Parent/Teacher Interviews will be held on Tuesday, March 21 from 3:30-8:30 pm.

Local cowboy, Curtis Anderson, visited J. R. and spoke of his personal recovery from 2002 brain injury during a bull-riding event. Since then, he has brought awareness to thousands of students and adults about the fragility of life, recovery (if lucky) from brain trauma, and his experiences from “starting all over again”— learning to walk, talk, and perform seemingly-small daily activities. He also talked about not only the physical, but mental and emotional challenges that he battled and continues to conquer. Curtis spoke with all of J. R.’s junior high students just like he did three years ago with our now-senior student group.

Last Thursday’s pep rally, M.C.’d by Grade 12 student Braden Chilibeck, celebrated the achievements of several sports teams and individuals. Junior and senior boys and girls basketball teams, junior and senior curling members were recognized for a season of athletic accomplishments. We also expressed gratefulness to their coaches for the time and energy they invested into the

kids. Miss Ishaq showed off her drama club and also revealed footage of her Improv team that recently competed provincially in Edmonton. We also gave 100% attention to Grade 12 student, Braden Gourley, for answering every question correctly on his Math 30-1 Diploma exam! Lleyton Bates, Grade 10 student, announced Kiss the Goat, a fundraising effort enticing students to vote for which staff contestant will inevitably kiss a real goat; votes are counted by the most funds raised per contestant, and the contestants are Mr. Woodward, Mr. Bates, Mrs. Scully, and myself. The pep rally concluded with an interactive game of volunteers from the audience.

Between selling popcorn and snow cones for sale at lunch, J. R. Robson’s crew recently raised $487.00 to help a Marauder family. Nice to know that we look out for our school peeps!

The annual ice fishing trip with Outdoor Ed 7 and 8 had kids out at Laurier Lake on March 15, 2017. Students spent the day out in the fresh air on the open ice and put to test the rods that they strung previously in Outdoor Ed, and Mr. Campbell’s fishing tips. 10 parents, 85 students, along with

Mr. Campbell, Miss Kluthe, Mrs. Archibald, Mrs. Koppang, Mr. Bates, and Mr. Weidner were in attendance that sunny day. You’re a catch, Mr. Campbell: thank you for offering students this experience yet again!

Last week we Mrs. MacKinnan stepped out for a year of leave as she and her husband prepare their lives for a baby.

Expecting a girl, she has traded in her whistle and markbook for stroller and diapers. In

place of Mrs. MacKinnan during her leave is Miss Heather Lakey who had already been substitute teaching at J. R. already.

On March 9 and 10, BTPS te ac h ers continued their learning at the Central East Alberta Teachers’ Convention in Edmonton. This year’s convention line up was filled with excellent opportunities to grow. The social networking was invaluable as well.

Perogy pick up was on March 14. We would, once again, like to thank all the students and parents who sold perogies, the community members who purchased them, and the VES staff who helped to organize and distribute the packages.

The Early Childhood Coalition is bringing in Kaybridge Puppets out of Edmonton for performances in Vermilion next week. Kaybridge Puppets will present “Tales of Sense and Nonsense”, which is a 40-minute puppet show with a demonstration for preschool to Grade 3. This will take place the morning of March 28.

With spring, comes the much anticipated kindergarten registration. If you have a child who is five prior to March 1, 2018, they are eligible to register for kindergarten. Registration packages are now available at the office. Please stop in and pick one up. If you are new to VES or would like an opportunity to spend

some extra time at the school, we invite you to attend the kindergarten Information Session and Open House, scheduled on April 6 at 7p.m. There will be activities for your children while you have an opportunity to hear about the program and ask any questions.

Bull Market Canada Safety Council Submitted

With the final days of winter stretching into the first vestiges of spring, farming season can’t be too close behind. Farm owners and workers across the country are starting to ramp back up to full operating power, dusting off the machines and preparing for the industry’s busier seasons.

This year, as part of National Farm Safety Week, March 14–20, the Canada Safety Council wants to remind farmers to be careful and attentive while out in the fields, especially when it comes to

handling livestock.

According to Canadian Agricultural Injury Reporting, there have been 65 animal-related fatalities between 2003 and 2012, accounting for 8 per cent of all fatalities. This is the largest nonmachine-related factor in farm deaths.

Of these fatalities, more than half involved horses, stallions and colts, with another 45 per cent involving cows, bulls, steers and calves.

Each animal is different, and has its own distinct personality and attitudes.

Being familiar with the animal you’re handling is of paramount importance to

reduce the risk. If you have a general sense of how an animal is expected to react, it will make it much easier to detect when something feels wrong or the animal is uncomfortable, anxious, or even aggressive.

Additionally, take care to always operate efficiently calmly around animals.

Many creatures will take their cue from you, the worker. If you’re agitated, nervous or tense, the animal will reciprocate. Being confident and calm will likely elicit these responses in return and make your task much easier.

Horses are by nature inclined to ignore

their confines and seek to escape when startled or fighting amongst themselves.

This makes it impor tant to always ensure their enclosures are well kept.

This includes high fences – at least 4.5 or 5 feet – to discourage any jumping attempts, as well as strongly reinforced fence posts that are sturdy and braced to resist any attempts by the horse to push on them.

When attempting to lead a horse, always use a lead rope and halter. Do not attempt to lead a horse simply by holding the halter, especially not if the horse in question has a known bad temperament. Remaining to the side of the horse, rather than in front of it, will prevent getting trampled on. You should also take care not to lead a stallion past mares, as this may result in an agitated reaction that will make the horse much more difficult to lead safely.

Of the 55 per cent of horse-related fatalities, approximately one-third of them were non-work-related, and often involved horseback riding. When riding, ALWAYS wear a helmet.

Exercise caution when a horse is exhibiting any of the following behaviours: Swishing its tail. This means irritation. Often times, this behavior is exhibited when there are bugs nearby, but the animal could just as easily be irritated with you.

Ears flat against the head. This sig nals ag gres sio n. Ear s that are peaked forward indicate that the horse is focused on something ahead of it, while ears that are peaked backward indicate there’s something behind the animal that has piqued its interest. In all cases, exercise caution.

Tense body. If the horse is tense, it’s because it’s on alert and unsure of something. If it’s tense and has its leg cocked, it could be taking aim at something. Watch out. Alternatively, if its leg is cocked but its muscles are not tense, the animal may just be resting.

When dealing with cattle, it’s important to remember above all that they are herd animals. This naturally provides a problem for dairy bulls, who are often kept in isolation by necessity and can result in negative behaviour patterns being formed. When it’s possible, limit the time in which the cattle are separated from their herd. Keep the herd nearby if you absolutely have to move the animal.

The most important things to avoid around cat tle are loud noises and sudden movements, especially near the rear of the animal. Instinctively, a cow will kick back and to its sides, in an area known as its kick zone, to defend itself. Avoid this by approaching the animal at its shoulder and using a low, confident tone to speak to it or to others.

Be aware of the animals’ positioning.

When multiple bulls share a common area, they establish a hierarchy of sorts. A bull may bolt unexpectedly to avoid the superior animal. Awareness is the key so you can avoid putting yourself in such a circumstance.

Farm-related fatalities typically start trending upward around April, making it that much more important to be aware of safety issues early and to educate yourself on them often. Happy farming!

Canadian Agriculture Literacy Month

March is Canadian Agriculture Literacy Month (CALM).

“CALM is an initiative that encourages children to learn about and celebrate agriculture in various ways, including reading books about agriculture, meeting with farmers, exploring the full production cycle of food from farm to fork, and exploring careers in agriculture,” says Karen Carle, ag education consultant, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. “The focus of the month is on building an awareness for students on the connection they have with local farmers and to the agriculture industry.”

This year sees the event expand from a single week to an entire month, and has the theme of Our Food. Our Story.

“Due to increasing demand by schools to participate, CALM now lasts all March,” says Carle. “This gives us to the opportunity to spend further time celebrating and sharing the agriculture story with more students, and in more schools, across Alberta.”

New this year is a Twitter live video competition. “It’s your chance to share a story about food using Twitter Live or Periscope using the Our Food. Our Story theme,” says Carle. “To enter the contest, you must add #MyFoodStory & #CALM17 in the description of your video. Three videos will be randomly selected from across the country, and the winners will each receive $250 that can be donated to a charity or

school of their choice.”

Carle says there are also a number of free resources available for teachers.

“These include Michael and Mia: Stewards of the Land, which is a story for upper elementary students about two children who take on growing a vegetable garden on their parents’ farm, and a new book for mid-elementary students called Alex’s First Seed. It’s a story about an earthworm who makes compost to nurture a seed into a fullgrown vegetable.”

There are also many activities taking place around the province. “For example, the Reynolds-Alberta Museum is participating this year with a number of their agriculture programs, Ag for Life is doing made-in-Alberta breakfasts and in-school programs, and Agriculture in the Classroom is connecting grade four students with people in the industry so they can learn about agriculture.”

Carle adds it’s very important to have events like CALM. “Our population is becoming increasingly urban, and many families are two or three generations away from the farm. CALM provides an opportunity to help young people understand the importance and value of agriculture to their lives and their communities.”

The Marwayne Atom Tier 1 Sled Dogs headed to the Atom B Provincials in Fairview on March 16 - 19th. They accomplished this by winning their games in the zone final against the CNN teams from Bon Accord and Gibbons (8-5 and 8-2). The children were excited and hosted a bottle drive to raise funds for the bus to provincials. This team consists of players from Marwayne and a few from Dewberry. There are seven first years and five second years on the team.
