AgCiting Day Entices Students To Lakeland College

Many aspiring students looking to study agricultural sciences travelled from far and wide to visit the Lakeland College campus for AgCiting on March 10.

The prospective students and their families attended to check out the college facilities on offer and to learn more about Lakeland’s agricultural science programs.

Sheep SMF team student Amy McCormack said that despite not growing up on a farm she loves working with sheep and that she hopes for a career working with sheep in the future.

“Last year I was in the calving barn with the students on AgCiting day, and they were able to watch a cow calving first hand, and many of those students are now first-year students. It’s a fun day,” said McCormack.

After talking with instructors about what the course has to offer, students spoke with graduates and current students.

‘Little Royal’

A multitude of activity took place at Lakeland College in Vermilion March 10 -12 for Little Royal.

Lakeland College welcomed youth and secondary students from Alberta and Saskatchewan as they hosted the Western Canadian Judging Competition (WCJC) on March 10. Eight different species were judged with the challenge of placing specimen best in class to worst 1 – 4. For five of the classes, participants gave oral reasons on how and why they judged that way; being marked both on their placement and explanation. Classes included a breed identification station, replacement beef heifers, beef bulls, dairy heifers, sheep, silage, light horse, and a mystery class which was icing.

The event offered the 48 participants

(aged 8 - 25) the opportunity to compete on 4H or intercollegiate teams of four as well as for individual prizes.

“I think judging has made me more confident, especially speaking in front of people, and has definitely improved my decision making and reasoning for it. I’d like to give back to judging by volunteering for 4H running clinics sharing the experience and mentorship that I have received with other youth,” said Lakeland College student, Jess Verstappen, who recently took the Grand Aggregate Judge at the Canadian Western Agribition and judged the First Lady Classic.

Another participant at the WCJC was 16-year old Sarah Whittal from the Bon Accord 4H Club who enjoyed her second year at Little Royal.

“The experience is good for everyday use; it’s a valuable life skill that doesn’t

have to be for agriculture. It can be used for almost anything really. Coming from a small town, the travel opportunities with judging are exciting; I get to meet a lot of people from across the province. I think Little Royal is a great opportunity for Lakeland College to display what they offer,” said Whittal.

Lakeland College also hosted an Agility Club Demo on March 10, where members encouraged their dogs through obstacles. Speakers took turns explaining that participating in the club helps provide exercise for them and their dogs, as well as building a good bond between dogs and their owners. One weaving obstacle focussed on training the dogs’ musclememory. The Agility Club meets six times per month, and with lots of reward based treats and toys, members have noticed much improvement.

A Stock Dog Club Demo followed as well as the Ranch Rodeo of ranch cutting, team sorting, and team doctoring.

March 11, was another full day at Lakeland College with a Steer and Heifer Show by the Stockman’s Club and the Little Royal Rodeo and Dance.

Delanie Knull (a U of A student from Crossfield) attended her first Little Royal, entering a steer and heifer in the show where they would be judged on confirmation, structure, and overall performance in the ring.

“Showing cattle is a big network. People are really close here; it’s like a sport for agriculture students,” said Knull when asked why she loves showing cattle.

The final rodeo performance ran on March 12, and many enjoyed viewing all that Lakeland College offers through the participating Clubs.

It was the second last night of the season for the Vermilion Folk Club on March 11, and musicians eagerly waited for their chance to take to the stage at the Vermilion Legion.

Vermilion Folk Club President Rita Barr said that musicians travel from as far away as Sundre to play in Vermilion at the open stage nights.

“Our open stage nights are really popular. I think we are gaining momentum all the time. We have a really good line up and people are always really well received by the community. Musicians just walk in the door, they don’t get paid; they do it for the passion and for the exposure. The fact that people in our venue listen to them is a very positive part of the Vermilion Folk Club.

Musician Phillip Willes launched his CD on the night and he was first up to play. The album is a collection of folk rock songs, all written by Willes.

“My old friend Franklin Wolters was the one who inspired me to record my own album. It took five months to get it done last summer. You can hear Franklin playing the harmonica on this album.

Music is my therapy. My wife had a stroke around nine years ago and I’m a 24/7 caregiver for her now. Celebrate Your Irish Blood And Heritage

People who were born of pure Irish blood lines and grew up in Ireland are what I call the purebred Irish. It wasn’t until I immigrated to Canada at the age of 28 that I realized there were so many Irish descendants outside of Ireland.

The population of Ireland is 4,757,976 people, according to the 2016 Irish Government census; but the Irish diaspora is estimated to be 50 to 80 million people around the world who have Irish forebears; making the Irish diaspora one of the biggest of any nation.

Every year on March 17th, the whole world goes green, not just the island of Ireland, to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with energy and excitement!

St. Patrick’s Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated in more countries than any other national festival by the Irish diaspora, especially in Great Britain, Canada, the United States, Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand.

St. Patrick was the patron saint of Ireland and he is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland.

Most of what is known about him comes from his two works; the Confessio, a spiritual autobiography, and his Epistola, a denunciation of British mistreatment of Irish Christians.

According to different versions St. Patrick and his life story, it is said that he was born in Britain, around 385 AD. As a boy of 14 he was captured and taken to Ireland where he spent six years in slavery herding sheep.

He later returned to Ireland in his 30s as a missionary among the Celtic pagans.

It is popular belief that St. Patrick banished the snakes from Ireland; the story says that while St. Patrick was fast-

ing, snakes attacked him, so he chased all snakes into the ocean. However, there have never been snakes in Ireland during the post-glacial period. The absence of snakes and symbolism involved with snakes is believed to explain the story, although it could have been referring to a type of worm rather than snakes.

The most widely-seen St. Patrick’s Day symbols are the colours green and

the shamrock, which is thought to bring good luck. So where ever you are this St. Patrick’s Day, if you have Irish heritage or a drop of Irish blood in you, celebrate and remember it.

For me being Irish is a quick wit and wicked sense of humor, a closeness of family, a sense of pride and ambition, a fondness for a party, an ability of all things creative and a love of words and talking.

Eleven - Year - Old’s Mission To End MS

Nicholas Fowler will be taking part in the Lloydminster Jayman BUILT MS Walk on May 6, at Bud Miller Park and raising extra funds by selling birdhouses.

The 11 - year - old Lloydminster resident has fundraised for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) for the past four years selling rainbow loom bands, healing stones, and cooling bands.

“One day while doing my own thing, I saw a bird and decided to build bird houses,” said Nicholas Fowler of his latest campaign product, which comes complete with slogans, ‘MS is for the Birds’ and ‘A Little Birdie Told Me ...End MS.’ “It’s been really fun doing the cutting, sanding, staining, and nailing of the birdhouses,” said Fowler who had received help from his parents and local school students Samantha, Linden, Jake, and Cohen.

Fowler’s mom’s friend, Gayle, copes with MS, which prompted his involvement four years ago.

When asked what keeps him motivated to reach this year’s goal of $10,000, Fowler’s response was, “She still has MS!” “In October of 2016, Nicholas delivered a speech to 250 researchers at the Campus Alberta Neuroscience Symposium in Edmonton. Nick challenged them by saying, ‘I realize that you are working hard, but you need to work harder,’ which

earned him a standing ovation which had previously been a foreign concept to him,” said his mother Jackie Fowler.

Nicholas’s speech also earned him an exclusive tour of the MS Centre for Research at the University of Alberta in February.

“The tour gave Nicholas a first-hand look at research projects underway; many of which are funded by the MS Society.

Researchers are focussing their efforts on unlocking the mystery of MS and fasttracking a cure, and Nicholas was able to see his fundraising dollars in action,” said Lloydminster Chapter Manager of the MS Society, Patty Milnthorp.

According to his mom Jackie, Nicholas wants to see a cure by the time he is an adult.

“Nicholas’s latest efforts come at a critical time for the Lloydminster Chapter of the MS Society. On the heels of a difficult year in 2016 during which the Lloydminster Walk saw half of its usual participants and raised less than half of its normal revenue, the MS Society is counting on 2017 being a recovery year for its major annual fundraiser.

While Canada has the highest rate of MS in the entire world, we’re also home to some of the best MS research minds, with many leading experts based in Alberta.

Walking Through Grief Society is one of those community supports. You may ask who are they? Where are they from? What do they do?

Walking Through Grief Society has been around for a while. Beginning support work in 1991 in Vermilion and Lloydminster and has continued to expand support services to meet the needs of those grieving life losses in our communities. Walking Through Grief Society is a nonprofit, charitable status Society, with Lloydminster, the town of Vermilion and Wainwright and villages of Kitscoty and Marwayne and County of Vermilion River 24 being served.

With the expanded services offered the Society is in need of more facilitators to work with support groups, Board members and “friends of the Society.”

Training is provided, and rewards of volunteering is a great experience and a wonderful therapy for those who are healing on Grief’s Journey.

Curling Provincial Results

Draw 7 saw two teams take to the ice in the men’s and women’s semi-final at the ACAC (Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference) Curling Championships, hosted by the Lakeland Rustlers at the Vermilion Curling Club, from February 24 - 26.

On the women’s side, Concordia started out with 4 in the first and followed it up with 3 in the third on route to a 7 - 1 victory over the Augustana Vikings. Red Deer took on Concordia for gold and Augustana battled NAIT for bronze.

In the men’s semi-final, Olds picked up 1 in the first. The teams blanked the next two ends before NAIT came back with 4 in the fourth and 2 in both the 5th and 6th ends en route to a 8 - 1 victory. NAIT then took on Augustana for Gold and Olds challenged Red Deer for Bronze.

Draw 8 was the medal round and the final draw of the Championships.

In the mixed division Concordia started off strong with 4 in the 2nd end, but Red Deer slowly picked away at their lead. After 8 ends the score was tied, and the gold medal game went into extra

The Community Closet Society of Vermilion made donations to local organizations totalling $5,500 on March 10.

Recent local fire victims previously accepted their $1,000 each. Lake land Robotics Club and Vermilion Roar Lacrosse were each the recipients of $1000. The Vermilion Skating Club, Dance Impressions By Ryan, and The

Vermilion ad District Music Festival were the recipients of $500 each.

All recipients were overjoyed to receive the help.

“We are thankful for the generous donations that we receive from the community throughout the year,” said Secretary Val Wynnychuk.

“We all volunteer and are happy to see that every penny goes back into the community,” said President Rose Hardy.

Is Advancing Technology Making Us Rude?

Before caller I.D. was offered on home phones back in the late 80’s early 90’s the only way we could identify who was on the other end of the receiver was by answering the phone and saying “Hello,” isn’t that something? There was no screening of calls.

I remember a time when there were no caller I.D., answering machines, email, text messages and the such and I believe it was a much more social and polite environment than it is today.

How many times have you tried to reach someone within a business and you have to maneuver your way through the endless push 1 to speak to, or push 2 to speak with so and so, only to get redirected to their voicemail? On their voicemail message they greet you sweetly and ask you to please leave a message, so you do, and have days, weeks and months pass by before hearing back from them if you are lucky. In a lot of cases, you do not even receive a courtesy call in return for all your effort.

So let’s move on to emails and text messages. Connecting with the people in your social or work circle is as easy as popping open your email or phone and typing a few words. Is it less personal than a phone call? Absolutely! However, it is the preferred method of communication by many nowadays including businesses. I wonder why that is? Is it so they can choose whether or not to speak/ reply back to you?

Personally, I still prefer a phone call as it adds a personal touch to the communication between yourself and the person you are attempting to connect with regardless if the communication is for work or on a personal note. Maybe it is just me or the way I was raised, but I like the personal touch.

Often in our day to day activities, we have to try and make connections with people. It could be for personal reasons or work related duties, and the one thing that bothers me greatly is when the person you are trying to connect with completely ignores your attempt and can’t take the 20 seconds to either call, email or text you back.

Just last week I had to call a business regarding a package I was expecting,

and after going through the various push this button and that button to speak to so and so, I received the lovely voicemail. I left a detailed message of why I was calling and asked them to please call me at blah, blah, blah number and if wasn’t able to be reached on that number, they could call me on my cell. Well, guess what, a week later, and I still haven’t received a return phone call, and the package could be in Timbuktu for all I know.

I know people are busy. I’m not saying there weren’t times when I meant to reply to an email, text or voicemail and completely forgot about it but when it happens on a recurring basis, I have to ask the question has technology given us the perfect opportunity to lose our sense of politeness and common courtesy? Has modern technology given us a better vessel of being rude to the people around us and have them know it? Back in the day when you made a phone call, and there was no answer you either called them back at a later time or realized they had missed your attempt of conversing with them and that was ok. But there is no excuse in this day and age not to answer someone’s attempt to communicate; they

know, that you know, that they tried to contact you. It takes a moment of your time to reply back no matter what the response is, it’s a common courtesy.

Second Annual VIBE Talent Show At J.R. Robson

The students impressed the audience with their musical talents and during an impromptu Macarena, approximately 40 students joined in supporting the original dancer.

Teachers in turn impressed the students Emmerson Livingstone sang and played Wyatt Richardson played electric guitar with a glowstick dance and a two-person piano during the VIBE Talent Show on on March 8, at the VIBE talent show in puppet dance put on by six of the junior high March 8, at J. R. Robson School.

Council Approves Tennis Court Resurfacing

Council for the Town of Vermilion awarded the Tennis Court Resurfacing project to Flex Court Canada for the quoted price of $52,730 plus GST at a Council meeting on March 6.

The funds will be taken from the MSI (Municipal Sustainability Initiative) as approved by Council for the Town of Vermilion in the 2017 Capital Budget.

Council approved $175,000 of MSI funding for rebuilding the outdoor rink between St. Jerome’s and VES Schools

and the resurfacing the tennis courts last year. Since then, the Fitness and Aquatic Centre Society application was approved, and a grant of $125,000 was received for the facility re-enhancement project.

“The existing asphalt tennis court surface, which was last resurfaced in 2005, has significant cracking throughout. A complete resurfacing of the tennis courts require that we deal more in depth with the standing water and drainage issue by re-grading the site and preparing the base for either a concrete or

The Vermilion Rotary Club said they are committed to donating $25,000 directly to the facility re-enhancement project within the next two years, but these funds have yet to be raised.

To date, we have spent roughly $270,000 on the outdoor rink, which leaves approximately $38,000 from the existing revenue for resurfacing and fencing the tennis courts,” Bell told Council.

“I have talked to other communities, and they said that resurfacing with Flex Court Canada is the best way to go. It has a 15-year warranty and its lifespan is 20 years,” said Bell.

Bell said that the new outdoor rink facility project will be an investment in the community’s future when complete.

“This facility re-enhancement project will be open for everyone in the community to use, and it’s in a great location between the two schools. I am hoping the project will begin construction by June,” he added.

It looks a little like winter again out there this morning with all the fresh snow. It looks nice and clean again, compared to muddy and dull brown, but it most likely won’t stay long now.

Although it wasn’t very pretty looking out there with many bare patches of ground, it was good to see the snow going, if it was to go as it seemed it didn’t want to stay this winter.

I build trails all winter for the dog sled, and just as it got nice, it would melt off, not just slushy but right to the bare ground in most of the trails, enough the sled would need wheels. With the weird winter weather this year I most likely could have used a modified summer cart instead of a dog sled; in fact, I rode the four wheeler quad all winter with no issues. Once the pups get bigger, and I have a few more in the team I plan to do just that, I will find an older quad with a blown motor, pull a few unnecessary parts off it and use it as a summer pull cart.

Every week the new pups Miss Noel and Sir Mukluk grow like weeds…big weeds. They are getting very adventurous and curious now, so instead of me taking them for a walk, I now have to pick it up a notch to keep up with them.

They are at that stage where they are not scared of everything and wander off a lot by themselves, which is not a great thing as they are now going further than I would like to see them go for their own safety, I have to keep an eye on them every second or they are off. Miss Oohohh still keeps them in a good line, but now they are even overwhelming her, but will still follow her most of the time, which will be a great thing if Miss Oohohh is the lead

At 12 weeks old now the training is in progress a little more seriously, this weekend the pups almost ran me to the point of exhaustion. So now training commands will get more established and free run is going to have to be controlled. It is time for the part of a pups training I really hate; which is leash training. For a pup that may have to be tied up from a real early age, because of being raised in town with no yard, near roads and a chance of them wandering, etc. it is not so hard on a pup.

But for a farm or rural raised pup with lots of free run or for those that are raised in large kennels, as mine are leash training in the eyes of a pup may seem like the end of the world. Sometimes it may look mean or really sad to see at first, and it can be a real heart breaker for the trainer, but it needs to be done at some point as most dogs may have to be leashed.

Miss Noel and Sir Mukluk have another appointment this week with Dr. Judy, our local veterinarian and believe me they are getting too big to carry even a few feet.

Miss Noel being of a normal large size for her age is even a struggle to carry, Sir Mukluk being an oversized chunk is simply beyond carrying, so by their appointment they will be leash trained.

I started off with Miss Noel as her personality is a little bit more outgoing and she is an intelligent pup for her age, a week ago in addition to their little red scarfs I fitted them with collars.They are now used to the collars, but collars are not the best method, ideally a walking body harness or halter system where the leash hooks to the harness above shoulder/neck is best.

However with pups growing so fast, one will need several/many harnesses per dog even if they are adjustable, so I use what is a “choke” chain collar, the name in itself sounds horrifying. The “choke” chain collar is a smooth small chain with a strong ring

It ’s -20 outside in the evening and I’m sitting warm and drowsy on the couch by the fireplace relatively pleased with myself. The fire has been going pretty much all day, with wood I’ve cut from the dead trees or deadfall in the yard over the last couple years.

Some of it has been from clearing trails to ski on so not entirely caused without some design. Sometimes I wonder why I bother going to the trouble at all of cutting it and of putting up a wood supply. The only conclusion I can come to is that a warm wood fire is about the best there is, and I like running my

chainsaw and actually enjoy the physical exertions of chopping and packing wood.

I like lumberjacking…and that’s Ok. My shirt wardrobe would seem to have suffered the consequence of that…getting donated shortly after moving to the acreage as I grew my shoulders out of most of it, and not actually from growing sideways for once.

Until my later teens there was not natural gas lines yet to our farm house. We had a big old silver-coloured propane tank in the yard we used to jump up on as kids and pretend we would ride like some big old fat horse…or something foolish like that.

Anyway, propane wasn’t cheap, and that was what we had for our central furnace.

Wood was cheap…no shortage of that on the ranch, so Dad got a big Valley Comfort wood heater for the basement that put out more heat than any stove I can ever remember since….literally cook you right out of the room. But it had to get filled with something…and from the time I was about eight every evening my brother and I would have our chore to pack wood to the house from the woodshed for it. Certainly, don’t remember getting out of doing that chore

too much…and as learning responsibilities go it was like carrying the mail: rain or shine or -20 below, you just had to get out there with your little wood sleigh and do it, son. It wasn’t long before it seemed like I could pack my own weight in Poplar over my shoulder, balancing the ever growing load in one arm overhead, feeding the stack as high as possible before making that long trip down the stairs about ten times.

Every month or so as winter progressed, Dad would on the weekend haul us all out to a different spot in the coulee to cut down some dead trees to recharge the wood supply. So I got to learn all about taking apart chainsaws, sharpening the chain, and mixing gas at Dad’s shoulder before I had even finished elementary school. We kids would pack it all from the bush through the snow (it always seemed deep then) into the back of the old Red Ford half-ton then back home to the wood shed. Sometimes we would start our former army ‘Snow Cruiser’ snowmobile that had a large sleigh to pack the wood to the house. It was one of the first motorized things I ever got to drive, and even though it wasn’t that fast, it was power-

Buck wheat is not really wheat, or even a grain. It has no gluten.

It is actually related to the rhubarb family. It is a rich source of trace minerals such as manganese, magnesium and copper among others. Buckwheat is a plant food that contains resistant fiber. This resistant fiber helps to lower post meal blood sugar, decrease food cravings and aids in weight loss. Buckwheat is full of nutrients such as quercetin and rutin that help to strengthen blood vessels. Rutin can also help prevent blood clots, and may help lower bad cholesterol and the

production of histamine. Like tea, buckwheat contains tannins, which along with the resistant fiber help the good bacteria flora and reduce harmful intestinal yeasts and bacteria. Buckwheat is rich in a new category of antioxidant called bound antioxidants. These antioxidants are bound until they come in contact with intestinal flora, and then important nutrients such as glutathione are released. The buckwheat groats can be cooked like a porridge or rice side dish using 1 cup buckwheat to 3 cups water and heated on low for 45 minutes. I made buckwheat flour in my coffee grinder from the whole groats. Just pulse until finely ground. This fresh buckwheat flour is perfect for buckwheat pancakes. Buckwheat has a nutty flavor, and this flavor

comes through in the pancakes.

Buckwheat also has the benefit of being a sirt1 food. These are plant based foods that researchers have discovered will switch on sirtuin activators, aka, flip the switch for fat burning and weight loss the same way exercise does. So far there are over twenty foods identified, with buckwheat, olive oil , kale, dark chocolate and red wine being among the list. Armed with this knowledge I have developed a sirt1 dark chocolate brownie, that is gluten free, sugar free and full of sirt1 goodness.

More on that next week, as I am still testing and enjoying guilt free sirt1 brownies and I hope to share the perfected recipe and method with you next week. Until then enjoy the nutty flavored goodness of buck-

I really like being toasty warm…to the point of setting up a bed downstairs 3 feet from that furnace every night for days at a time. So doing that chore without complaining about it too much got you a little more rope when you started jumping snow piles in the yard with the snowmobile before any wood ever hit the sleigh for the house.

Wasn’t all work, obviously.

Not every chore has to be a pain. Sometimes you can choose to do it just because you can.

Might be even good for you in the long run and in time…you may even decide to enjoy it.

And it looks like if this cold snap hangs around any longer, may have to enjoy it some more soon.

Buckwheat Pancakes 1 cup buckwheat flour 1 1/4 cup buttermilk 1 egg 2 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter 1 teaspoon baking powder 3/4 teaspoon baking soda 2 teaspoons sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla Combine all the ingredients and stir until smooth. Allow to sit for 10 to 15 minutes.

Cook on an oiled and heated frying pan or grill until browned on one side and then flip to the other side and cook until browned.

Delicious served with melted butter and maple syrup or whipped cream and fresh fruit.

Upcoming Kitscoty Dinner Theatre

The Kitscoty Community Theatre will be hosting productions of the ‘Take Your Medicine’ comedy on March 31, April 1, 7, and 8 at the Kitscoty Community Hall.

The dinner theatre’s 15th production is expected to bring lots of laughs taking place in a hospital in the 1950’s.

The play is directed by Coleen Hoegl and produced by Brian and Jeane Hunter.

“I like designing and sewing attempting to recreate an era. Working on period pieces sets us apart and showcases the custom made costumes. It has also been fun researching the music,” said Producer Jeane Hunter.

Various local actors will take part in the performances. Actress, Celise Torgersen mentioned that they have been practicing weekly since January 6, and added, “We’re quite enjoying it this year.”

Dwayne Cooper is one actor who has been in every play since they began in 2003. The Kitscoty Community Theatre originated before that in 1999; filling a need for junior and senior high students looking for an artistic extracurricular.

Vermilion Minor Hockey was the recipient of a $5000 donation from Scotiabank at Hometown Hockey in Lloydminster on March 11.

It’s never hard for us to spend the money we make and we are never short of community projects. This year we are fully in to donate $25,000 to support the facility re-enhancement project between St. Jerome’s and VES Schools within the next two years. The rink is finished, but the landscaping, drainage and the outdoor courts have yet to be done,” explained Lee. This year’s Rotary Garage Sale will take place on the 20th, 21st and 22nd of April at the Vermilion Curling Rink.

Last year we tracked that we put in 900 volunteer hours from the time that we started setting up the buildings until the time that we were cleaned and moved out,” added Lee. Speak Up About Sustainable Ag

According to a recent study conducted by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, 95 per cent of Canadian producers are taking action to protect the environment.

Contrast that statistic with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s recent survey that found the public perceives the ag industry as unsustainable and environmentally harmful and it’s clear that we have a serious gap to address.

“Sustainability and the environment are not only top-of-mind issues for those that work in the industry, they are also top - of-mind topics for the consumer,” says Dr. Cami Ryan, Social Sciences Lead at Monsanto Canada.

“The problem is that approximately two per cent of the population in North America is responsible for farming and food production, which leads to a broader society that is largely disengaged from (and often misinformed about) food production processes.”

Dr. Ryan believes that it ’s more impor tant than ever for those of us

in the industr y to reach out to the consumer to talk about what we’re doing to produce food in a responsible and sustainable way.

“If we don’t engage and actively listen, then the risk is that farmers won’t have the freedom to choose the tools they want and need to grow food for you, me and the rest of the world,” says Dr. Ryan. “Yes, we need to be equipped with facts and evidence, but more importantly we need to reach out to others and share our passion for food and agriculture through personal anecdotes and stories. This is an extremely powerful, proven approach and will go a long way to bridge the current divide.”

The good news is that the idea of sharing the sustainable side of agriculture is starting to catch on. Alberta producer and social media agvocate Jay Schultz (@WheatlanderJay) isn’t afraid to wade into discussions on sustainable ag and he encourages others to do the same.

“Agriculture is a dynamic industry and is continuously evolving. What works in one region or sector doesn’t

But, one thing that we have in common is that we all want to be good stewards of the land,” says Schultz, whose wife operates the popular blog Nurse Loves Farmer. “We need to communicate that passion for what we do, coupled with a continued openness to learn and adapt. If we do this, we’ll ensure increased market access and overall long-term health of the environment and our businesses.”

The late U.S. congressman Ike Skelton captured the link between agriculture and the environment best when he said, “Because of their connection to the land, farmers do more to protect and preser ve our environment than almost anyone else. They are some of the best environmentalists around.”

While Ike’s quote has plenty of facts to back it up, most Canadians would never think about ag and environmental sustainability working together. In fact, many think the opposite. It’s our job to change that perception and show how Canadian agriculture is actually a world leader in on-farm environmental

practices. Here are some numbers to use in your discussions: Canadian ag has played a significant role in decreasing soil erosion.

According to Statistics Canada, more than half of all farmland in Canada is now cultivated using minimum tillage practices – drastically improving the quality of our soil in various areas of production.

Less tillage and more direct seeding on Canadian farmland has also meant we’ve been burning far less fuel. Add that to the rapid adoption of new technology like GPS and unmanned aerial vehicles, and we’re drastically reducing our fuel emissions. Not only is this helping the environment, but it’s also making our industry more efficient.

Our sustainable actions aren’t just restricted to crops. Grazing livestock ensures we’re using the available land in the most efficient and sustainable way possible. While crops can’t grow everywhere, our animals can feed and thrive in areas where not much else can.

Always remember to wear an ATV helmet, gloves, long sleeves, pants, and boots, even when only travelling a short distance. Inappropriate gear, such as loose clothing, can get caught on controls and doesn’t provide protection.

Next, check over the machine. Make sure you have enough fuel, top up engine oil if necessary, and ensure all brakes, lights and gauges are in good working order. If you’re going to be transporting farm supplies, make sure they are properly tied-down. Don’t forget to look over any trailer or implement that is hitched to the ATV. Every machine is subject to load limits which can be found in the owner’s manual..

Remember to consider how that weight is distributed and correct any inequalities.

Any load, even one well distributed, will impact the stability of the vehicle. Drive accordingly. Maintain a speed which can be controlled at all times and look ahead for hazards. Over-confidence, high rates

or flares, and take a cell phone or two way radio. (Make sure that your communications device will work in the area you’re travelling to – cell phone signals aren’t guaranteed everywhere.) Plan to be home before dark and in case of bad weather, leave the ATV parked as both low light and

reduced visibility increase the chance of a mishap. Don’t be tempted to go back for the machine in bad conditions..

Adult-sized ATVs are not appropriate for children under 16. Anyone driving an ATV should receive training. A few hours in an ATV course could save your life.

Opportunities Exist In Public’s Misconception Of Ag

Agriculture More Than Ever Submitted

Most Canadians still picture Old MacDonald’s farm when they think about the ag industry – and that’s never been further from the truth.

An Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (A AFC) qualitative research study discovered a low level of awareness exists, particularly among urban residents, about the current state of ag and its contribution to provincial, regional and the national economy.

Overall a majority of respondents believed that the Canadian ag industry was shrinking in size, was slow to adopt technology and that the country was a net importer of agricultural products.

These findings aren’t shocking revelations to those of us in the industry.

Turning on the TV news or scrolling through social media feeds, you’ll find many of these outdated and incorrect views presented as fact on a daily basis.

The study also concluded that most of the participants’ views and impressions were formed based on their experience as consumers. Because very few respondents had actually visited a working farm or agribusiness, they were basing their opinions solely on their experiences purchasing food at grocery stores.

With such limited exposure to the industry, how could we expect people to think anything different? But that’s where we come in. We need to get in front of the Canadian public in a big way – and why not start with the huge impact ag has on the Canadian econ-

omy?

We have over 2 million jobs and growing, bring in billions of dollars to the economy and produce the safest food on the planet – facts that impact every Canadian.

And the good news is that people are open to hearing from us. When asked who respondents would trust to educate them about the industry, producers and agribusiness employees were at the top of the list. In fact, the survey recommended that producers sharing their own stories would be seen as significantly more credible and more likely to engage the general public.

Image matters What these results show is the importance of public perception. People trust

us, which means that what we say and how we say it, impacts the entire industry. And ensuring that our industry and its value are better understood will support our long-term success in a number of ways: • We can attract more young people to the industry.

• We can ensure the industry has the financing it needs to grow – investment flows to industries that are progressive and have a bright future.

• We c a n b u i l d t r u s t a n d c o n f i dence among consumers. Our industry produces safe, high-quality food using sustainable measures. We need consumers to see this and believe this.

• We can help all Canadians see that support for agriculture is an investment in our country’s future.

College Students Get Their Feet Wet With New Wetland Management Course Developed By DUC

Ducks Unlimited Submitted

Five Alberta colleges will be offering a new wetland management course developed by Ducks Unlimited Canada. After a successful first offering at Olds last fall, the Decision-Making for Wetlands Management course will expand its reach to students at Lethbridge College, Lakeland College, Grande Prairie Regional College, the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT), as well as Olds College.

The 14-hour course appeals to a broad audience and is suited to current and future practitioners working in the agricultural, environmental and municipal sectors as

A hear twarming field trip was taken on February 28, by the J.R. Robson School 7B Class as they volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House in Edmonton.

The Ronald McDonald House provides families with sick children a place to stay while their children are in hospital. The students were told a fun fact about the first Ronald McDonald House.

“There was a coach of a team whose daughter had cancer and he wanted to raise money for kids with cancer. Once they raised the money they gave it to a doctor and said she can do this and buy that, but she needed $36,000 to buy a house nearby so the families who had kids in the hospital could be close to them. So he went to the local Mcdonald’s owner and said, ‘For every shamrock shake you sell, could we have 25 cents of the income?’

The manager said, ‘We will give you

100 per cent if we can name it; and now there are 300 Ronald Mcdonald Houses around the world,’” said Kaitlyn MacKinnon.

Their time at the house was spent by receiving a tour to understand how the house supports families and they were split into groups so they could assist in the facilities duties. Students spent time baking for the residents of the house, making lunches for time spent in the hospital, decorating hospital lunch bags,

as well as cleaning in the house.

“The students came back with a better understanding for the difficult times spent by area families at the house, as well as the thoughtfulness and caring that goes into the everyday operations of the house.

It was such a good day, said MacKinnon proudly.”

She noted that the Vermilion area currently has two families staying at the house and has had families previously spend time at the facility.

The Vermilion 4H Beef Club held its reorganizational meeting on Tuesday, October 11, 2016. We would like to welcome all of our new members and families, and welcome back all of our returning members. It’s a very special year for 4-H this year as the program in Alberta is celebrating its Centennial! Our club’s goal for 2016-2017 is, “Encouraging members to be safe and successful in the livestock industry�.

Our new club leaders are Kris Lehman, general leader; Warren Swanson, beef project leader; Lee Selte, assistant leader; Kathr yn Watson, Creative Options/photography project leader; and Nadine Farkash is our

Cleaver Kids leader. We greatly appreciate all the parents who volunteer their time and who make the club run so smoothly and effectively throughout the year. A new Family Mentorship program was created this year to help new members and families.

The club’s weigh day was held at North Central Livestock on Sunday,

November 20th with members weighing their steers and heifers. Thank you very much to North Central for letting us use the facility. Members from our club and others enjoyed 4-H District Volleyball hosted by the Vermilion 4-H Sheep Club in early December.

T h e c l u b w a s ve r y b u s y a t t h e December meeting which included a club gift exchange, planning for the Christmas par t y (laser tag at A Bit Extreme in Lloydminster during the Christmas break in January), and food bank donations.

At our January meeting, Janet Kerr, an instructor at Lakeland College, gave us a very informative presentation on public speaking, to get us ready for our Public Speaking on Sunday, February 5th. Junior speeches: Rylan Lehmann placed first and Katie Zorn placed second. Intermediate speeches: Saige Swanson placed first and Chase Bowman placed second. In Senior speeches, Kaylie Krys placed first and Grace Cleland, placed second. In Intermediate presentations, Avary Hickman placed first and Owen Cleland placed

second. In Senior Presentations, Cavin Jones placed first. Congratulation to all the members who participated in the Club’s Communications Day. At our February meeting, we planned tours of the Pride of the Prairies Bull Show and Sale in Lloydminster next month, as well as of Nor th Central Livestock in Vermilion. At the end of the meeting, Vermilion area cattleman Brian Chrisp spoke to the members about how to star t halter-breaking calves and the night concluded with each member learning how to make a rope halter. We also voted to send two teams and two individuals to Western Canadian Judging at Lakeland College in March.

Bull Market SMF Students Ready To Showcase Livestock During Beef Day 2017

(Vermilion, Alta.) Bulls and heifers are selected, the sale program is printed, and cattle clipping and vaccination days are scheduled as Lakeland College animal science technology students prepare to host Beef Day 2017.

The fourth annual Beef Day takes place Friday, March 24 in the Equine Centre at the Vermilion campus. The preview is at 4:30 p.m. followed by

supper at 5 p.m. and the sale at 6 p.m.

As in previous years, the event involves students in the purebred beef, commercial beef and livestock research units of the Student-Managed Farm (SMF) – Powered by New Holland. New in 2017, students with the dairy and sheep SMF units are also displaying a few animals.

The purebred beef SMF unit will have up to 13 Black Angus yearling bulls on offer. Interest in the bulls has increased

thanks to a successful show season.

“The two bulls in our show string were embryo donations from Miller Wilson Angus and Blairs. Ag. Both companies run elite breeding programs and we are honoured to display their genetics in our show string and at the sale,” says Teresa Mann, general manager of the purebred beef unit.

ers were hand-picked from the commercial unit’s herd. As for the research unit, students will display their research heifers with an interactive demo that highlights their research project on genotyping and feed efficiency in commercial beef heifers.

“Beef Day is a great event for animal science students to lead and learn from and to showcase what our hard work throughout the academic year has accomplished. We believe we have the deepest set of Angus bulls and commercial heifers that Lakeland has ever had on offer,” says Cheyenne Catley, marketing and communications manager for the purebred unit.

Mann’s enjoyed leading the purebred unit and working closely with Lakeland students and staff. She appreciates the passion and dedication the students have for the college’s purebred herd.

“It’s an honour to be a part of the purebred industry. Thanks to Lakeland’s SMF, we as students are able to live the lifestyle of being a purebred producer while learning hands-on skills along the way. That’s something that no other college can offer,” says Mann.

Agriculture More Than Ever

Agriculture and food have been popular discussion topics lately – online, in the media and at the dinner table. It’s a good thing that people are concerned about their health and making positive choices about what they eat.

One negative is that many times those of us in the agriculture and food industry aren’t part of these discussions, which allows misinformation to spread freely and quickly because we’re not there to set the record straight. When our voice is missing, one negative story can dominate the news and social media feeds for days and leave the public with the perception ‘that’s just the way it is’ in agriculture.

In fact, groups outside of agriculture are already telling our story for us – a story that doesn’t reflect the reality that we care about our animals, the land, and producing safe and healthy food. We can’t afford to let others tell our story.

The good news is that we’re starting these conversations from a position of strength. National surveys continue to show that farmers and others involved in agriculture are some of the most trusted professionals in the country. That means, when we talk, people will listen. We just have to make sure we’re talking.

Protecting our social license The term “social license” refers to an acceptance or approval of an organization or industry to operate by their stakeholders, consumers or the general public. Social license is created through timely and effective communication, meaningful dialogue and ethical and responsible behaviour.

For example, consumers grant social license based on their perception of a company or industry’s credibility. On the flip side, consumers can revoke that social license when there is a real or perceived disconnect between their values and the values of the company or industry. An industry cannot operate to its full potential until the social license is rebuilt.

And social license isn’t static. As opinions change and issues arise, our ability to engage and respond impacts consumers’ level of confidence and our overall credibility. By being open and proactively communicating with the public about how we grow food and why we operate in the ways we do, we can protect our social license to continue producing high-quality, nutritious food in ways that are efficient and sustainable.

It’s no longer good enough to stand on the sidelines. We need to seize the oppor tunity and steer negative and inaccurate conversations back to the real story – the story of an industry that Submitted

Our Kindergarten students had a great time touring Boston Pizza on February 27 and 28. Miss Kelli welcomed both of our classes to the restaurant. She toured them through the kitchen, they made their own individual pizzas, and they made chef hats and pizza crafts. It was so much fun and a great experience for our young, eager learners. Thank you to Boston Pizza of Vermilion. Now the students are creating their own restaurant in their dramatic play area at school.

Basket ball Club wrapped up for another year with two games against the staff on March 2 and 6. The first game was a back and forth one with the staff pulling out the 18-14 victory. The second game was higher scoring with the staf f winning 26 -16. Practices were Mondays and Wednesdays in January and February. The students really improved in the two months, and we often had 25 members out on Mondays. Mr. Beecroft was the main coach, and Braden Baldwin from JR Robson School helped us out in February and was a great help.

The Alberta Rural Education Symposium was held last week in Edmonton, and Mrs. Webb was fortunate to be a part of it. Representatives from mostly rural areas around the province got together to discuss concerns and share ideas on how rural Alberta can respond

to increasingly challenging times that we are experiencing. They were challenged in their thinking and how they could make a difference in sustaining rural life in Alberta. Throughout the conference they had the opportunity to hear about success stories and learn how they might replicate actions that are focused on making rural Alberta thrive.

At our March 7 assembly, Grade 4A presented Parkland Region facts and the 4B class told us about the Waste in Our World projects that they had made using recycled objects. Science Fair medals and certificates were handed out. Mrs. Tomkins informed us that we totaled 2335 AR points in February.

Mr. Beecroft let us know that between the two perogy fundraisers, VES sold $13 500 worth of perogies. We thank the community for being so supportive, and we commend the top three sellers – Luke Guenthner, Britney Yarmuch, and Meghan and Kane Fadden – who received Subway gift cards. We ended the assembly with The Big Crunch as we all took a bite from celery at the same time.

Jump Rope Kickoff was on March 8.

Ashley and David came to our school and put on a skipping demonstration with six of our own Grade 6 students – Jennalee, Alexis, Olivea, Alex, Mitchell, and Ethan – as well as four staff members. They told the students that the six keys to staying healthy are drinking water, eating healthy foods (and that breakfast is the most impor-

tant meal), getting at least ten hours of sleep, exercising, never smoking, and staying positive. VES’s fundraising goal for the Heart and Stroke Foundation is $8000.

We hope you enjoyed the opportunity to see all the wonderful things your children have been doing in class during our Celebration of Learning evening. Report cards will be going home on March 23 and Parent-Teacher Inter views will be in the evening on March 30. Teachers will be requesting interviews for some students, and parents, you are welcome to book interviews to share in your children’s progress if you wish. We are pleased to once again be using School Confer-

Mannville Students Attend High School Curling Provincials

The Mannville High School Curling Team attended Provincials in Lethbridge from March 2- 4.

“They did a lot of curling to get where they are. They had fun throughout the year; not taking the competition too seriously which seemed to work for them,” said Coach Tim Konieczny.

The team won their first game against Lethbridge, suffered a close loss in their second game, and lost the third.

Experience and accomplishment was not lost, however, as the team is still

proud to have competed at that level.

All Grade 12 students from Mannville School had gone undefeated at zones and districts leading up to the event.

“We were a little intimidated coming from such a small school but still feel we did pretty well. It was cool being able to attend the opening ceremonies with teams marching in single file, as well as the banquet and hearing from the guest speaker.

All four of us love curling and have a lot of fun with it; especially doing it Mannville School Representative - Tara Tod, Lead - Kastyn Konieczny, Second - Nelson together.
