Lakeland Rustlers Host Curling Provincials

Top curlers from across Alberta competed to determine this year’s champions at the ACAC (Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference) Curling Championships, hosted by the Lakeland Rustlers at the Vermilion Curling Club, from February 24 - 26.

Rustlers Coach Dusty Makichuk said it’s the first time the club has hosted the provincials in Vermilion in 3 years.

“It’s great for the economy of Vermilion.

All of the teams travelled here and will stay in hotels, go to the restaurants and see what we have to offer here. Our ice is great, I would put our ice up against anyone in Alberta,’ said Makichuk.

Coach Makichuk said the Lakeland Rustlers Curling team have been training since last autumn and that he picked the

team based on their dynamics and ability to work together.

Teams travelled from as far away Red Deer, Viking and NAIT to compete.

The Lakeland Rustlers won their first game on Friday.

Lakeland’s mixed teams finished 6 - 1 and 5 - 2 at the regional competitions and were second in the overall standards leading up the Provincials. The men and women’s teams placed fifth and sixth respectfully.

All teams have competed in 2 draws in their division.

Lakeland Athletics Director Alan Rogan commented on the Rustlers performance over the weekend.

“The Concordia Thunder mixed team took on the MacEwan Griffins. At the 4th end break the Griffins were up 4 - 3 but in the 6th end the Thunder took a 4

spot on route to an 8 - 5 victory. In the other mixed game Lakeland took on Red Deer. Picking up 3 in the 2nd and 5 in the 4th the Lakeland Rustlers cruised to a 9 - 3 victory. On the men’s side two close games occurred. In the Olds vs. Red Deer game it went back and forth and after 8 the score was tied. The Broncos stole 2 in the extra end to pick up the 6 - 4 win. NAIT and Augustana battled in the other men’s game which was also proved to be a back and forth affair. In the 8th end the Vikings scored 2, good enough for the 5 - 4 victory.

Draw 2 had the men’s teams back on the ice along with the first round of women’s play.

On the women’s side Red Deer took on the Augustana Vikings. The Queens applied constant pressure to the Viking

squad which resulted in an 8 - 2 victory for the Queens and the teams shaking hands after 6 ends. In the other women’s game Concordia was up on NAIT 3 - 2 at the break however NAIT came back with a 3 spot in the 6th and picked up one more in the 8th to squeak out a 6 - 5 victory.

The second draw of the day for the men saw the Red Deer Kings take on the Augustana Vikings. The Vikings roared out to a 7 - 1 lead after 4 but the Kings chipped away over the next 4 ends to earn the 9 - 7 win.

In the second men’s game of draw two saw the Olds Broncos taking on the NAIT Ooks,” said Rogan.

The top 2 men’s and women’s teams will continue on to CCAA Curling National Championships at University of Alberta Augustana in Camrose from March 22 – 25.

‘Battle Of The Blades’

The Vermilion Figure Skating Club held their ‘Battle Of The Blades’ themed Carnival on February 25, at the Vermilion Stadium.

Several performances featured guest hockey players that were challenged to perform the same moves that the figure skaters had been trained to do, and a bit of puck handling from the figure skaters.

This provided additional entertainment for the crowd.

In the last two years, the club has grown from 30 to approximately 70 skaters.

Awards included PreCanskater Of The Year recipient Damien Krys, Canskater Of The Year recipient Mighael Liebenberg, and Program Assistant Choice recipient Fiala Ostropolski.

Appreciation was given to the many volunteers and guest skaters Yulia Shcherban and the Lloydminster Border Edges.

“We appreciate the support from the whole community,” said President Paige Jaremco.

Should Drug Dealers Be Charged With Murder?

The other day I was scrolling through Fa c e b o o k , a n d I came across a meme posing the question “Should Heroin dealers be charged with murder to protect our children? Like and Share if you agree,” and it got me thinking.

I don’t think the question asked should be just about Heroin dealers, but of all drug dealers who deal street drugs such as Crystal Meth, Fentanyl, and W-18 which in fact is 100 times more potent than Fentanyl along with other drugs known to cause death.

Heaven knows the list can go and on and people who kill our children and loved ones should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.

Think about it. If you look at the defini-

tion of first and second-degree murder it states that first-degree murder is an intentional and planned act to take someone’s life whereas second-degree murder is usually unplanned; so with that said could it be possible to charge a drug dealer with first or second-degree murder? In my opinion yes they should be charged with murder because those dealers fully understand that the drugs they are selling can indeed cause death, therefore in my mind it is premeditated and an intentional, planned act to take someone’s life.

I know a good defense lawyer can argue they didn’t intend to take their buyers life, as it would cause them a decrease in their customer base, in turn causing them to lose income. But let’s face it, those drug dealers know full well the drug can kill someone quite easily and does not give a rats ass whose life they take; they know more customers will eventually come.

If murder in the first or second degree isn’t a possible charge, then the charge of manslaughter should absolutely be considered and applied if the death was caused by the drug supplied.

Back in October of 2016, the Edmonton Police Services laid its first charge of manslaughter against drug dealer Jordan Yarmey in connection with the death of 33-year-old Szymon Kalich who died from a Fentanyl overdose, and I say good for them!! I am pretty happy that Acting Staff Sgt. for the Homicide Section Dave Monson said that “Anybody who is providing or dealing in those controlled substances can be and will be held responsible for the deaths if we have the evidence to lay the charge.”

I think it is time to stop slapping the wrist of drug dealers and start punishing them the way any other person would be if they killed someone. I don’t care if it was a person’s first time trying a drug or a drug addict who

have used for years, they are still a human being and someone’s son or daughter!

Family Day In Vermilion

Families frolicked at the Vermilion Provincial Park as the Vermilion Wellness Coalition hosted several activities on February 20.

“It is lovely weather. We are happy with the turnout and like seeing different families every year,” said Crystal Jackson.

Ninety-three people registered to take part in tobogganing, snowshoeing, Frisbee golf, snow painting, and a scavenger hunt.

Families also enjoyed cooking bannock on a stick as well as hot chocolate and apple cider. Registrants also had the opportunity to enter several draws for door prizes.

“The snow painting was the most fun part,” said Jenna Nimeck.

“The people that come always have a good time,” said Jodi Simmonds.

Hey Folks, Sorry I was MIA for a couple of columns… was having some fun, sort of, that cold snap a couple of weeks back didn’t do me any favours although it was a great time. Meaning that every couple years when we get a certain weather warm cold than frigid, I get arthritis in every area my body has been opened up via accident or through a medical procedure. I have a few less troublesome areas like a broken finger that was also cut open, I started my body punishment early as that was before I could even walk, and as a matter of fact, I had just learned to crawl.

Back in the day of the dawn of modern mar vels, there was the fir st ele c tric automatic…kinda…clothes wash machines it was a round top open drum that agitated and washed the clothes.

For what we have a spin dry there were two rubber hand crank rollers that you ran the wet clothes through to what we know as spin dry; then clothes were hung on a clothesline, it was state of the art. However back then safety was more a second thought, as the main components of that washing machine ran by pulleys and belts that were quite accessible from ground level. One doesn’t get much more ground level than when learning to crawl as a baby; my mother turned her back for a moment. That moment is when I first decided to go on my first adventure.

My first crawl made it to the washing machine and my intense curiosity that I still maintain today made me reach out…apparently, a fan belt and pulley made quick work of a baby’s fingers.

I still have the pulley marks on three fingers, and one finger was broke and is still crooked, that finger was my first introduction to ar thritis even in my younger days in my 20’s.

On cold snaps, I would get such pain in that finger I wanted to cut it off at times, but it was only periodically every other year so not a great issue, and not being one that likes to sit too long adventures were many.

My life of work hard play hard started just about the time I took my first steps also, and for my generation safety was always a second thought, as a matter of fact, I think the biggest safety motto was…”Hold my beer watch this!!” But seriously I did get banged up at both work and play and ended up with a few broken bones, serious cuts and a few surgery’s; the broken bones now are minor compared to anywhere on the body that was opened up to any kind of surgery.

These areas are where arthritis likes to hang out at the weirdest times, to the point that sometimes it comes in handy in predicting weather…but hurts, but my most serious was a back operation.

That hard work and play played havoc on a couple of lower disks in my back through many incidents, resulting in the removal of two lumbar spine disks and part of a damaged spur vertebra. That even didn’t slow me down I was walking the same day of the operation and climbing stairs the next day, but back then the surgery was an open six-inch cut and scar, and some weather conditions hit hard.

The majority of the time I can still hike circles around youngsters half my age but two weeks ago during that warm/ cold snap it was a hardship, to the point of my wife had to help me put on my

pants, socks, and boots just to see the doctor. Some weird medications and complete rest were the prescriptions, however, when a back gets this bad one can’t lay, sit or walk too long, there has to be a perfect mixture of that routine.

But guess what…bad timing…my fur babies showed up at the same time, Sir Mukluk and Miss Noel were the best medicine ever, aside from puppy kisses they helped me with the perfect routine.

My shop has a big screen TV and a reclining massage therapy easy chair, which I made a big cardboard bed box for them within hand reach of the chair. Doctors order was no work for almost ten days, but we made that work perfect. At sunrise I would let the pups and Miss Oohohh out of their kennels, then we would go for a walk in the North 40 bush, which I had plowed many trails with my quad and snow plow for weeks prior.

The walks were incredibly enjoyable with the puppy’s; we would make our way back to the shop, I would stretch out in the massage chair, they would play a bit have a nap than in an hour we would go for another walk before my back seized up. Well, we had a routine of eight walks a day, adventures in the bush trails were endless, pain for myself was replaced with smiles and laughs, and many pictures were plentiful. In fact, I took over two thousand pictures in those ten days. Also, training was incorporated in the playtime walks; Miss Oohohh was a huge help also after a few days. The first couple days she was extremely jealous, and for a day or so wouldn’t even look me in the eye, and if I talked to her, she would look the other way with her nose in the air. But I was so impressed how well she adapted to the pups caring and playing with them,

even letting steal her favorite bones and toys…for a minute or two, now they are best of companions.

Miss Noel is such a sweetheart full of affection and puppy kisses and always on the go, Sir Mukluk more relaxed a big chunk of a furball, almost 30 lbs at ten weeks already. In fact, he is big enough for the training pack I used for miss Oohohh when she was many months old; well guess what at ten weeks Sir mukluk is already pack trained like a pro. He took to those packs like he was born with them, of course, I just loaded the packs with balled up paper towel to bulge the packs out, and he wore them without stress, biting on them or any complaining. I was so proud of him, I had Miss Oohohh wearing her full pack so maybe he just thought that’s what big boys do, so soon we will hit the trails looking for antler sheds.

Other than some pain it was a wonderful week bonding with the fur baby’s; I could not be any happier than with two pups in the entire world, I just hope Sir Mukluk doesn’t get as big as a moose.

During our walks I would grab an arm size standing dead tree, we call “sticks” carry it a bit further each walk, and by the end of the ten days, we had a weeks’ worth of firewood.

When The Smoke Clears I am feeling normal now and ready for some power hikes, hope the poor little fur balls can keep up, we will be roaming the hills and woodlands for antler sheds soon, lots of training but they will think fun!

Isn’t it amazing how landscapes can change your perspective? W here I live, there are rolling hills, with a vast view of fence lines drawing the eye to different pastures, corn fields, and river hills all with cattle scattered throughout. There are famous trees and heights of land that all have their own names, names that mostly just the locals know of (sadly). I feel like I can see quite a distance.

As I made the drive south to visit my parents, the views changed subtly along with the Alberta weather. The kids’ behaviour morphed along with the landscape, and hours later I hardly knew them as the Rocky Mountains emerged.

I pointed to the Livingstone Range many times for the two older kids to see, but it was only my eldest (Susan) who

could either be the lead boss making a trail for all to follow to the right gate to greener pastures, or the rogue beast pulling a 90 and going straight out the ditch through the nearest fence to freedom just ‘because.’ You know the one… you’re cussing at and promising it to be steaks next week. When you are one that doesn’t do well travelling with the ‘human’ herd…you’re not always exactly sure which one of those two you are.

Having that urge to be different, more often than not, can be a bit aggravating for those around you to deal with.

We’ve all heard the phrase about the nail sticking out and getting pounded in by the hammer: the nail being you and the hammer being everyone else. It’s pretty hard to be an individual and travel your own path without making decisions that occasionally take you where someone doesn’t want you to go. So you get a bit hammered, maybe a ‘talking to’ or an argument…and have to decide how much abuse you want to take to stay ‘sticking out.’

I guess my first demo of that was Dad

deciding to be a pilot and fly a plane.

Lots of people told him he was cracked… but he did it anyway. It ended up being something that defined who he was.

I’ve had some other examples too… so maybe I come by a streak of stubborn out sidedness honestly. Being a Taurus might be a convenient bull-headed excuse as well but lately, it seems the more resistance I get, the greater my resolve becomes to keep going.

So what is this great decision? Well going back to soccer after a full year off from a concussion is one that hasn’t won me a whole lot of fans. But by this point, everyone just shakes their head at me when I limp by with the latest <fill in the blank> injury of the week. I’m not done with it thank you very much…at least not yet I’m not.

The other one is just an inanely rogue move not to do what everyone else is doing…just ‘because’ and admittedly it has moments of awkward. For someone who has always been a bit of a ‘check out with tech’ person, I’m not distracting myself with a phone, music player,

book, or anything else riding on the LRT for 15-20 minutes morning and evening, just looking around at the scenery and people. Yeah…I know. Crazy, right?

Remaining alert to your surroundings (pseudo-casually)…in a crowded train of strangers every day, observing 95% of the transit ‘zombies’ who have their eyes locked down into a cell phone, tablet, book, newspaper …it’s a fascinating glimpse at the current culture of the 21st Century ‘herd.’ Not ‘checking out’ in a typical scenario where everyone else does? It IS just a little bit against the grain. I suppose I’ll eventually succumb to taking my phone out of my pocket…for now, it’s an escapist experiment of heading out through that ‘fence.’

Not sure it is greener pasture on the other side…but secretly wishing already more of the human herd isn’t as checked out all the time as they appear to be.

Sometimes, even on the small things, just you have to go your own way for a while.

Landscape Perspectives

acknowledged the jagged line on the horizon. As we neared our destination, my younger daughter Shirley was finally able to “see” the mountains. As always, the last hour of the trip is the most dramatic. The road goes from bald prairie pastures to small camel hump hills with pine trees only on the tops, aptly named the Porcupine Hills. There are the foothills that bring the uncomfortable ear pressure and popping on the winding highway until we reach a huge pass through the massive mountain range.

Then there was Shirley, my spirited little lady. She will be three next month, and was pulling on her three point harness with both arms, with a drawn out “...get.... me.... outta.... here” over and over again.

The repetitive phrases all melted into the background as we drove into the familiar backdrop of my teenage years. Like many people I’m sure, those coming of age years aren’t always full of moments we want to remember, am I right?

I’ve heard that usually, we can see around seven miles until the curvature of the earth takes the view from us.

Here in the Crowsnest, distance seems magnified with these gigantic jagged rocks sticking high into the air. I’m quite sure my eyes are confused with the vast amount of atmosphere between me and the great mountain range. Is it because the mountains are upwards that I can seem to see further than those seven miles? This morning I was looking out the window at the view and wondered how far I could actually see back home. In Tulliby Lake, I see what is literally there, trees and hills.Could I perhaps see further, except there is no vast mountain range as a backdrop? If it weren’t for the mountains here in the Crowsnest Pass, could my mind actually fathom the vastness of the atmosphere?

In December our centre was saddened with the passing of three prominent members, our sympathy to the families.

December 25th our centre was filled for the annual Ron Moses Christmas Dinner, a total of 198 meals were served.

The sun was shining, the water as cold as can be, the mountains our backdrop; what an afternoon it was.

Dad has these pirate sayings, one being “A life without scars is a life half lived.” What a saying: that saying can help you spin a sorrowful memory into one of perseverance and strength.

Whenever you feel you have a hill to climb in life, just remember that its size can often morph (larger or smaller), based on your perspective.

Avo c ad os are a very nutritious food.

Avocados are the fruit of a t all ever gre e n that can grow up to 65 feet tall. What is really amazing about avocados is all the unique health benefits that they have. Avocados have the abilit y to increase the absorption of beta-carotene and lycopene. That means when you add them to a salad which includes romaine, carrots, and tomatoes, your body can make better use of the nutrients by 200% – 400%. Avocados also contain at least nine different forms of beta carotene, which is the precursor to Vitamin A. In addition to the benefits

from vitamin A antioxidants, avocados also contain Vitamin C and E antioxidants. The most nutritious part of the avocado is the dark green part of the flesh closest to the skin. Avocados are high in beneficial mono-saturated fats that help to reduce inflammation, regulate cholesterol and lower the risk of heart disease. Avocados are a source of omega 3 in the form of alpha-linolenic acid. They also contain vitamin B6 to help support the immune system and vitamin K which is anti-inflammatory. Avocados are a low carbohydrate food with a low glycemic index and are a good source of fiber. All of these factors help in the stabilization of blood sugar. Avocados contain a rare and unusual seven carbon sugar.

This is a brownie recipe that contains no flour, no gluten or refined sugar.

Avocado Brownies 1 avocado, peeled and pitted 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce

1/2 cup maple syrup 3 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/2 cup cocoa powder, Dutchprocessed such as Frys 1/2 cup coconut flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking soda Combine the avocado, applesauce, syrup, eggs and vanilla in a blender and blend until smooth. Add in the remaining ingredients. If the batter is a little to thick add a tablespoon of water.

Pour into an 8 x 8” metal baking pan and bake at 350 degrees for approx 25 minutes. You can ice the brownies with chocolate icing, or place pieces of a dark or milk chocolate bar on the hot brownies and then spread the melted chocolate around.

Bull Market Opportunities Exist In Public’s Misconception Of Ag

Agriculture More Than Ever Submitted

Most Canadians still picture Old MacDonald’s farm when they think about the ag industry – and that’s never been further from the truth.

An Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) qualitative research study discovered a low level of awareness exists, particularly among urban residents, about the current state of ag and its contribution to provincial, regional and the national economy.

Overall a majority of respondents believed that the Canadian ag industry was shrinking in size, was slow to adopt technology and that the country was a net importer of agricultural products.

These findings aren’t shocking revela-

tions to those of us in the industry. Turning on the TV news or scrolling through social media feeds, you’ll find many of these outdated and incorrect views presented as fact on a daily basis.

The study also concluded that most of the participants’ views and impressions were formed based on their experience as consumers. Because very few respondents had actually visited a working farm or agribusiness, they were basing their opinions solely on their experiences purchasing food at grocery stores.

With such limited exposure to the industry, how could we expect people to think anything different? But that’s where we come in. We need to get in front of the Canadian public in a big way – and why not start with the huge impact ag has on

the Canadian economy?

We have over 2 million jobs and growing, bring in billions of dollars to the economy and produce the safest food on the planet – facts that impact every Canadian.

And the good news is that people are open to hearing from us. When asked who respondents would trust to educate them about the industry, producers and agribusiness employees were at the top of the list. In fact, the survey recommended that producers sharing their own stories would be seen as significantly more credible and more likely to engage the general public.

Image matters What these results show is the importance of public perception. People trust us, which means that what we say and

how we say it, impacts the entire industry. And ensuring that our industry and its value are better understood will support our long-term success in a number of ways: • We can at tract more young people to the industry.

• We can ensure the industry has the financing it needs to grow – investment flows to industries that are progressive and have a bright future.

• We can build trust and confidence among consumers. Our industry produces safe, high-quality food using sustainable measures. We need consumers to see this and believe this.

• We can help all Canadians see that support for agriculture is an investment in our country’s future.

Alberta’s Wheat Farmers Are Eligible For 20 Percent SR&ED Tax Credit For Investing In AWC-Funded Research

February 21, 2017 – Alberta wheat farmers who paid the Alberta Wheat Commission (AWC) check-off and did not request a refund are eligible to receive a 20 percent tax credit under the Scientific Research & Experimen-

tal Development (SR&ED) program for their investment in AWC-funded wheat research. For example, farmers who paid $100 in check-off to AWC in 2016 would earn $20 in tax credit.

very excited to celebrate the 100th Day of School on Friday, February 17. Ms. McDermott’s students participated in a variety of activities counting to 100. They also shared their 100-Day projects they had created at home with their classmates. There were projects created with 100 lifesavers, stickers, pieces of Lego, bubble gum, rocks, cotton balls, and many more wonderful and imaginative ideas.

Mrs. Moore’s grade 1/2 class coloured 100-Day hats and created cereal necklaces with their grade 4 buddies while they practiced counting by 5s. Ms. Van Winssen’s grade 2 students enjoyed participating in 100-Day Lego Challenges, as well as having their photo taken with an app that aged them. The pictures turned out really well. Mrs. McCormack’s grade 3 students dressed up to look like 100 and they enjoyed acting like a century all day.

Mrs. Roth’s students created amazing self-portraits of themselves when they will be 100 years old. It was a wonderful day celebrating the number 100.

Mrs. Clark’s grade 10 Social Studies class celebrated their first case study of the semester on Friday, February 17 with a “Bring Your Own Banana” banana split party. Students began their exploration of globalization by learning about the environmental and social impacts of banana plantations in countries like Ecuador.

On Friday, February 17 the Student Council held a “Cupcake Sale” to raise funds for the Reid family who recently lost

their home in a fire and child comes to St. Jerome’s School. St. Jerome’s demonstrated great generosity and collected over $500 for the family. Throughout the week the school has collected clothing for the family as well. Thank you to the community of St. Jerome’s for their great kindness.

It was a short week last week but a ver y busy week as St. Jerome’s students proudly wore their Pink Shirts on Wednesday to show their support against bullying. Thank you to the members of the R.C.M.P. who visited to hand out cool thermo black/pink pencils to every students and pink maze pens to the staff.

On Thursday, the Rotary was on hand to paint student’s pinky fingers purple who donated a toonie to help end polio. Thursday afternoon Randy Martin and Dane Martin introduced a variety of students to the sport of lacrosse during Phys. Ed classes.

T h e J r. H i g h B a s ke t b a l l t e a m s competed in the Highway “16” Championships the last weekend of February. The Jr. Girls traveled to Marwayne, while the boys were at J.R. Robson. Both teams will also participate in ECACS Championships to end their season. The Sr. Girls traveled to Settler this past weekend.

The ‘Rembetika Hipsters’

Chilling melodies accompanied lyrics that told Greek stories of struggle during the “Rembetika Hipsters’ performance at the Vermilion Folk Club on February 25.

The group of passionate musicians including Nikos Diochnos, Allen Baekland, Lincoln Frey, Giorgos Iosifelis, Jonathan Lewis and new member Robin Tufts played a range of originals and covers.

The bouzouki instrument was used along with several others to create classic Greek music. Songs tweaked a range

of different moods including lamenting middle-eastern rhythms, and upbeat blues-island tunes.

“We actually prefer playing on a small stage because it enables us to be relaxed and get to know the people a lot better,” said Allen Baekland.

The evening was enjoyed by many as the ‘Rembetika Hipsters’ had the audience clapping along and even had a few of the locals up dancing.

“We would like to thank the community for supporting our evening of live music,” said the Vermilion Folk Club’s Gwen Gochee.

shared about not only the event, but the projects, work and learning that led up to the fabulous afternoon. Mrs. Webb and Mrs. Doherty shared information from the Leadership Workshop they attended the week prior. The School Council members discussed ideas to entice more parents to the School Council Meetings.

Pink Shirt Day was on February 22.

Once again, VES was a sea of pink. We started the day by gathering in the gym.

We formed a heart and had our photo taken. The VES choir entertained us with the song “Beauty in the World” and Mrs. Webb delivered her announcements in the gym.

February 22 was also Day 100 of our 2016 -17 school year. The Grade 1 students always remind us of this day, as they make 100 item projects and display

them outside their classrooms. This year they did not disappoint, making projects from bolts, pennies, marshmallows, goldfish crackers, Lego, crayons, buttons and numerous other items.

VES held their Celebration of Learning from 5 -7:30 on the evening of February 22. Families of VES students came to visit our school. Each classroom had activities to do and many items on display. Thank you to all the families who took time out of their busy schedules to visit us.

On February 23, the Rotary Club of Vermilion visited VES to promote the Rotary International goal of eliminating polio. For a $1 donation, children had their pinkies dyed with the same dye used on children recently vaccinated in countries where it still exists - Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan. We thank the

RCMP Visits VES Members of the Vermilion RCMP stopped by VES on Pink Day and handed out pencils to students wearing pink.

The Grade 2 classes celebrated their social studies “Looking at People” unit with a Culture Fair and Potluck on February 17. The VES gym was filled with parents and extended family as they partook in a delicious lunch of various ethnic dishes that the families had brought in to share their heritage.

Students entertained the guests with several cultural dances, as well as demonstrations of some Inuit games. The gym was decorated with numerous samples of student artwork from Inuit, Acadian, Ukrainian and Australian cultures.

CROP OR PASTURE LAND WANTED

1913 - 2017

Mary Edey / Pidruchney passed away on February 05, 2017 at Mannville Alberta at the age 103 years.

Mary was born to Bill and Sophie Shologan in Myrnam Alberta on October 1st, 1913. She was one of 7 children. She married Peter Pidruchney in 1933 and had four children; Adeline, Frank Ernest and Linda. The family farmed north of Claysmore. Sadly Mary lost her husband Peter and father in law Paul in an accident at the Claysmore train Crossing on October 11, 1961. Son Frank came back to the farm and Mary and daughter Linda moved to Vermilion. She married Ted Edey on June 30,1966 and lived in Drumheller and Forestburg until Ted retired back to Vermilion. They lived east of the bowling alley for a number of years and then moved to Parkland Manor in 2002. Ted passed away on August 28, 2005. Mary moved to the Vermilion Valley Lodge in 2008 and enjoyed her friends there. In November of 2012 she moved to the Mannville Care Centre. Mary will always be remembered by friends and family for her wonderful cooking, especially her home made perogies.

Mary is survived by her son Frank, her daughter Linda (Ken) Chernuka, nine grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, and eleven great great grandchildren, daughter in law Charlotte Pidruchney and step children Colin (Sherley) Edey and Maida Edey.

Mary was predeceased by her first husband Peter Pidruchney and second husband Ted Edey as well as daughter Adeline Fooks, son in law Keith Fooks, son Ernest Pidruchney, daughter in law Edna Pidruchney and step daughter Laurian Beauchesne.

A service of remembrance was held at St Olga’s Catholic Church,Vermilion on February 11, 2017 The family would like to thank both the staffs at the Vermilion Valley Lodge and the Mannville Care Centre for the wonderful care they gave Mary over the years. Also Father Bill Hupalo, Cantors Zenovia Mudryk and Evelyn Petryk , Sacristan Bill Poliakiwski for the service, and the ladies of the Catholic’s Womens League for the wonderful luncheon.
