Johansen Bull Riding - Bullfighting School

Young athletes battled to improve their skills at the 25th Annual Johansen Bullriding - Bullfighting School held in Vermilion at the Lakeland College Equine Centre from February 17 - 19.

The school was aimed at having industr y professionals teach the basics, and put athletes on the right

course to becoming successful; not just in bull riding and bullfighting, but in all areas of life. Participants received one-on-one coaching and after each ride they were able to watch instant replays to see exactly what things they had done well or could try to do differently. “ Bull riding is truly an individual sport. We lose 50 per cent of the time,

so we are always overcoming adversity, but there’s nothing more fulfilling than when you are successful,” said three-time Canadian Champion, twotime Calgar y Stampede Champion, and PBR World Finalist, Scott Schiffner.

Schiffner suggested that bull riders and bullfighters surround themselves with good people; people better than

themselves to encourage growth. He also noted the importance of keeping their equipment and their fitness in good condition to avoid injury.

Another Professional Canadian Bull Rider, Justin Volz encouraged participants to believe in themselves, and to train physically at the gym, and mentally by watching videos.

Family Loses Everything In House Fire

Dennis Reid is a well-known man around the Town of Vermilion, recognized by many working at the Co-op gas bar in Vermilion.

A tragic fire burnt down his family home, located 13 miles straight east of Vermilion, on Wednesday night February 8.

“The fire started in the middle of the night when my son heard a pop sound. Then my two eldest got up to investigate. They found the room on fire and grabbed water jugs to put it out, and they managed to get it under control. I told them to check between the two floors because it’s an old house and I went back to the bedroom to put on clothes.

They went upstairs to check, then ran back down and said ‘get out’!

It’s an old house that had space heaters, and we are pretty sure one of the space heaters failed overheating, or the pressure release valve blew.

My wife was first to leave because she has asthma, and she sat outside in the truck with our 16-month-old daughter. It spread very fast. My son was the last one out, and he just managed to get out before the porch collapsed behind him.

I wanted to go back and save the animals. We had ten cats, and only three made it out; my son grabbed one cat on the way out, and another ran out past him with its tail on fire,” said Dennis Reid.

T h e Ver m i l i o n Fire D e p ar t m e nt responded to the call out and arrived on the scene 24 minutes later.

“It seemed like forever when we were waiting for the Fire Department to arrive and when they did it was too late; the whole house was on fire. All they could do was stop the fire from spreading.

Something like this makes you realize how precious life is; my wife, my 16-monthold, my 9-year-old, 13-year-old and 18-yearold and I, all managed to get out! We are still here, but we have nothing left.

The house has been in the family since 1908. My Granddad and the neighbours built it, and I’ve lived there since I was 15 years old. It’s sad because we had so many memories there, it was a huge shock, and we are just taking things one day at a time now,” said Reid, who is still shaken from the event.

Reid says the plan is to rebuild in the future and that he is glad he had house and content insurance.

Giving Back On Valentine’s Day

Giving back to the community, both Initiation Tigers Teams handed out cookies at the high schools in Vermilion on February 14.

With 3 - 6-year-old players dressed in jerseys and welcoming students as they entered the schools, many were

cheered and one young player even received a pat on the head in response.

The Elks Initiation team passed out cookies at St. Jerome’s school while the Midwest Auto Initiation team passed out cookies at J.R. Robson School.

The edible Tiger s sticker s were ordered, and one of the hockey moms volunteered to make, decorate, and

package the cookies. This was the first cookie venture for the initiation teams, and overall it was a great success.

Students were thrilled to receive a special token from the young athletes.

“The best part of playing hockey is scoring goals, and I had lots of fun handing out cookies,” said Cole Cusack.

The Elks Initiation team has a tour-

nament in Wainwright on February 25, and both teams will be finishing up their season at the end of February.

“Almost every player came out to support the event. This is one of the many examples of how children and their parents are so involved in hockey,” said Elks Initiation Manager, Derek Young.

Bullying: Don’t Stand By And Let It Happen

B u l l y i n g surrounds us each and every day and affects the lives of so many children, teens, and even

adults.

Bullying does not only just happen in schools, and playgrounds like it used to years ago, but it also happens now through cyber space and in our workplace.

Bullying by d efinitions refer s to repeated and targeted aggression to have a cumulative ef fect to either, threaten, undermine, constrain, humiliate or harm another person, their property, reputation, self- esteem or selfconfidence.

To fully understand how bullying affects the people around us we must understand the forms in which bullying may come in. When we think of bullying, we often think of it as being just verbal, such as being called a degrading name or physical, such as being

pushed or banged into as we pass by the bully. However, bullying can come in the form of social, racial, religious, sexual and against people with disabilities.

So how do we as a society distinguish between normal behaviour and bullying? Well, there is a fine line that separates the two. Every person may have a disagreement with another person; they may verbally or physically attack someone in a time of anger or disappointment. Friends often tease each other, and this is ok if it’s done in fun and both sides are laughing and having fun with the teasing. The flip side to these normal behaviours is when it becomes repetitive and constant, then it jumps the fence from being normal behaviour into bullying.

Bullying has taken on so many different faces that it is becoming increasingly harder and harder to distinguish.

As a society we think we could spot bullying from a mile away but can we?

How are we supposed to recognize a situation which involves bullying if we do not know the true circumstances

Workplace and cyberbullying have be c ome more prominent than any one of us would even think . Have you ever seen a posting on Facebook where a status is geared toward a certain person, and you think to yourself “wow that’s a bit harsh.” Have you ever seen a co-worker get scolded in front of many people and think “gee, I wouldn’t want to be in their shoes right at that moment.” We all speak out of place sometimes and do things that we later regret. That is normal, but when a co-worker is constantly scolded or nitpicked at, or you see many negative postings regarding the same person it’s time to start to question whether or not this person is on the receiving end of a bully.

We often feel as a society that bullying is the individual’s problem. They must take the stance to stop the bullying by themselves or, at least, report it to seek out help but, often the victim does not have the will to fight anymore as bullying is about power and often

they feel powerless or do not have the knowledge and support to make it stop.

We need to step back and look at how the victim must feel. If you speak to children and even adults who have been bullied and ask them why they have stayed silent about the situation, many of them will tell you the fear of standing up and speaking out is overwhelming. They feel as though the consequences outweigh the benefits, they feel as though the bullying will become worse if they snitch on the bully. They feel ashamed; they feel as though no one will believe them, they sometimes feel as though they deserve what is happening to them.

The consequences of bullying have become so serious it has taken the lives of our young people, it is time that we as a society realizes that bullying is a huge problem, and it isn’t an individual’s problem but a societies problem.

Don’t stand by and watch it happen take a stance and stop it in its tracks, if you watch it happen and do nothing you are no better than the bully themselves.

“We get to help them learn and grow.

Seeing the children understand things is rewarding,” said Director, Cassandra Surina.

Valentine’s Day was extra special for the children, as students had the oppor tunit y to decorate cookies, make paper heart crafts, and break a piñata during their morning gym class. Throughout the activities, staff and students intermingled and even exchanged a few special Valentine’s hugs.

Car Collision In Vermilion

An accident occurred when two cars collided on Highway 41 in Vermilion on February 15.

Hi everyone, sorry I missed last week, but as promised, here is a peak at some of the upcoming trends and interesting finds. I will star t off with the kitchen. Bronze and gold coloured appliances are coming in, think refrigerators, stoves, and dishwashers. Carrara marble (white with grey veining) is a big continuing trend for kitchen counter tops, even though it has already had a long run. When I was ordering some kitchen gadgets the sales rep asked me “what’s the big deal with marble rolling pins; it seems everybody wants them.” “That exact colour of marble is trending,” I told him. I found one interesting new little appliance that intrigued me. It is a very simple ice cream maker. It does not use any coolant, and as a result, this ice cream maker is very affordable. You simply freeze the insulated thick walled container, and then pour in your ingredients and put it into the machine. In twenty minutes you have d e li c i o u s h o m e m ad e i c e c re a m. I really like the concept behind these new machines because simple ingredients like cream, sweetener, and vanilla will be easily turned into ice

The first time I heard Franklin sing was at the annual Lea Park Countr y Gospel Jam bo ree and I remember thinking “now there’s a guy that can pick some solid songs”. I asked the person standing nex t to me if they knew the singers name, just as he forgot the words mid-line in the song.

Little did I know the “why’s” behind those moments.... I looked forward to hearing him sing the following year, and was daring enough to go strike up a conversation af ter wards and compliment his set. I went home with a singing heart full of excitement and a CD in each hand. I played his skippy harmonica tunes for my Dad during his autumn visit, to which we both smiled.

The following spring I was rediscovering some old cowboy music (Eddie Dean, 1907-1999) and was unable to find any information about the lyrics or music online. My mind drifted over to the Wolters fellow, and I hurriedly dug out his CD’s to find his “ busin e s s c a r d ” t u c ke d i n s i d e. I t r e a d

cream. It eliminates all the food additives found in commercial ice cream, and nothing tastes better than pure ice cream. I noticed that the baked donut pans come in three sizes, for mini donuts, cake donut size, and the larger yeast donut size. Other new kitchen gadgets include the spiralizer, which can cut a zucchini or carrots for example into long noodle-like veggie pasta. Spiralized vegetables can also be used for salads. It really is a great way to get more vegetables into our diet. Another innovative product is pucks of wood chips, such as hickory, that are soaked, and then placed in a small metal pan in the barbeque for a wonderful smoked flavour through the food. With Canada’s 150 bir thday celebration this year, I saw lots of special mugs, t-shir ts and other memorabilia with the official logo. Get ready to party.

The Pantone colour of 2017 is called greenery. It is full of life and freshness, and it is perfect for spring. Not surprising, trailing greenery is also trending.

The green colour is part of the trending tropical motif, featuring tropical foliage. A quick passing fad is 1960’s pink flamingoes, mixed with tropical foliage. They are adorable and sure to add a bit of fun and whimsy to summer decorating. Another popular print is a triangle geometric design often of two

or three colours. Splashes of gold and burnished brass are seen everywhere.

White is the big trend colour for interiors, including white walls. In rooms the colours white, off whites and ivory’s are all layered, to produce a truly ethereal effect full of light. Grey, white and beige is still strong in home decorating, especially upholstered furniture, duvet c over s, and quilts. New “on trend” colours are camel and blush.

Mustard is still seen accenting grey, as is aqua, blush, red and greens. Canadian style setter Mercana opened at the Toronto show with a mix of midcentur y modern (1950’s and 6 0 ”s) and rustic styled furniture. The buzz word for buyers is “on trend.” Navy is the new black, and blues are emerging everywhere. The look is less bling bling and more raw, modern and rustic.

Currently, generally speaking, there is more texture, especially wood and less shine. There really has been a play of opposites, like mixing antiques with clean modern lined furniture. Button tufted upholstery is still big, especially headboards, sofa and chairs. There is a lot of pat tern mixing in whic h o p p osing pat ter n s t hat you woul d prev i ou s ly never put to g et her are mixed. Gone are the rules of previous pattern mixing. For winter 2017, green is being carried over, but as a dark forest green, mixed with dark browns,

Musical Friends

“Author, singer...”, listing a bunch of life’s hobbies, ending with “...and all around ladies man”. What a character! So I rang him up and introduced myself again. He hadn’t heard of the song in question, but referred me on to a friend who could likely help. We discussed the upcoming jamboree at Lea Parke, and hung up with a “see you next month”, but started chatting over the phone almost immediately.

Even though he was born in the 30’s, Franklin truly believed he was a young guy. His enthusiasm for life was a breath of fresh air in my day-to-day farm life of kitchen, kids and cows. We became friends, and even with the 56 year age gap, we were still on the same page in our conversations about musical influences, styles, and even who “the greats’” really were (He said Gene Autry, who also happened to call Eddie Dean [my hero] the greatest singing cowboy of all time!). Franklin had an encouraging air about him, his disposition was “on the sunny side” so to speak.

I was sure surprised when we were talking about EmmyLou Harris one day and mid-conversation I threw in that my potatoes were in need of harvest-

ing before the hard frost that was forecasted only a couple days away. His first response was “Well I’ve got a garden fork, I’ll come help ya out!” I’ll admit I felt a pang of guilt-even as a mother with three little lids, I thought it wrong to get help from someone in their 70’s.... but you know, it’s true, two people can’t do twice as much, but they can do three times the work of one person! Franklin forked the potatoes to the surface, (thankfully they were planted in the fluffiest part of the garden) and told stories about other jobs that fork had done over the years, and how one of the tips of the fork had got broken off way back when.

I crawled around on my hands and knees, gently placing the red, purple, and yukon gold potatoes on a large blanket my sister had made for me 25 years earlier. To my amazement, we finished digging all the potatoes within one short hour. I felt embarrassed he had made the drive so far to help me, for such a short task! We made quite an enjoyable day of it though. After lunch, I set up lawn chairs in the garage, and hauled all the dried potatoes up from the garden to where my band mates were waiting. We bagged the potatoes into the beautiful new sacks he had brought, and he self-

Toronto florist and owner of CMC floral told me that there is still a lot of rustic decor favored for weddings and the trend shows no signs of slowing down. I spoke to the sales person from a top bridal shop in Edmonton and she said blush pink is the number one selling colour for bridesmaid’s dresses, with grey coming in second. These colours along with purple and aqua are all the rage on for bridal. At the recent bridal show, Weddings on the Border, it seemed our local brides are right on trend, looking for blush, whites, and purples for their weddings.

Fashion for Spring is showing a lot of coral and blush pink along with grey, white, nav y and natural linen khaki. Trending patterns are stripes & garden party floral prints. Styles vary from ruffles and volume to sleek clean lines and are tending to have a 60’s 80’s retro vibe. New trending colours are camel, pink, fuchsia, heliotrope (a pink-purple) as well as bright colours and vintage pastels. Khaki pants are the new must have jeans for spring and summer 2017.

He, myself, and our band mate Eddie had a great September afternoon, one I will never forget.

If it wasn’t for (his great taste in) music, I would have never struck up a conversation with old Franklin Wolters.

I’m so thankful I was a part of his last few months here on earth. If you have ever heard him sing, I’m sure you would say that he was enthusiastic, but often forgot a line out of every song! Oh, he would just jump back into singing on the next line, as the music went on. The funny thing was that he wasn’t forgetful (too much!), he was just having a great time and always got to smiling at people!

Surprisingly, sometimes he actually had kept singing, but had turned away from the microphone to wave at someone!

Every time we sang a duet if he made eye contact I’d point at the microphone to help him remember, because that’s what friends do, they help each other out. I hope that my music hobby will help me meet more people in the years to come, though I’m quite sure I won’t find any quite like Franklin.

Not that I express any belief in such things, but some times I wonder if the reason I am around to do things like write lit tle stories and complain about how old I am is because there was someone watching over my shoulder.

Going out in the world for us daily is fraught with perils big and small. Some of us manage to dodge them more often than probability should allow and we get to laugh about it later, if you are in to black humor.

But some probabilit y catches up with them…and that can weigh on the minds of everyone else because each day feels like the next dice roll. Many times the close calls weren’t because of anything you did either…you were just in the wrong place at the wrong time which

resulted in the dangerous situation.

Some it is all about risk y… even stupid…decision making. You want to be old and wise? Avoid those ones.

Dad used to tell me of some of his close calls, and I would wonder how I ever managed to be born. One story was about hunting beaver in the boat on the Battle River in full roaring flood, with ice shelves and floes and who knows what washing downstream.

One wrong move on the tiller in that turbidity flow and it is all she wrote for you.

I of ten remarked in jest that I’ve used up about eight of my nine cat lives. Luck, wariness, and reflexes have had much to do with that number.

At two years…I got a smallpox vaccine shot that I reacted to. My arm swelled up, and that one almost did me in. I’ve had more than my fair share of close calls in and around vehicles too. I’m sure many of us have a story of going in the ditch or a close miss on the highway. I’ve got some of those and have left the odd long trail of rubber on the road braking for a spooked deer or moose, or some driver pulling out or blowing through a stop sign when it wasn’t safe. The moose one I still don’t know to this day how I missed it…I was shaking 3 hours later from

the adrenaline.

As a kid once met a front grill of a truck quickly exiting across the sidewalk by the Post office…one more foot there I was a permanent hood ornament. I’ve been hit by a sports car in downtown Edmonton …and I think the ‘murder drill’ at football practice at J.R. helped me react into a body roll off the hood to land on my rear end. I was in the right…but it doesn’t matter once you are visiting the hospital. A hundred yards from that spot a couple of years later a car rear-ended another car just as I was about to walk in front of it in the crosswalk, and as they flashed passed me a foot away, I couldn’t say I was all that fond of walking around near 104 Ave anymore. Even working down at Stampede once, I had a semitrailer run over my foot (long story) as I was trying to help hold a gate open for it during teardown. The nurses at the hospital had a good laugh at my expense when I told them he backed over it again just for good measure.

Just riding with Dad on warm afternoons, anywhere in anything, you had to stay alert because he would inevitably get drowsy. I had to grab the wheel the odd time just to avoid us veering into oncoming traffic. Dad and I were

flying cross country from Wetaskiwin to Vermilion once, and the Taylorcraft engine star ted sputtering, which is not the nicest situation at 1500 feet.

We force landed on closest runway… which just happened to be Highway 21 north of Camrose. Dad checked things and cleared the fuel filter and a few minutes later took off like no big deal. I think about that now with the traffic on that road at certain times of the day.

Yikes. He probably would have just picked some gopher pasture to land on instead. Nothing scary about that at all.

Worksites c an be pret t y darn dangerous too as many of you know. I almost got taken up a gravel conveyor belt in the middle of the night once taking a test sample… truck driver triggered the surge bin and wasn’t paying attention. I can’t say I wanted to get buried in the middle of a gravel stockpile too much. Having to help fight a huge fire at an asphalt plant by Duvernay once was one of my more harrowing life experiences. When the plant was shut down for several days as a result, I was more than glad to take another assignment somewhere else.

Moving Forward At Chrysler

Shoppers Drug Mart in Vermilion is now fully stocked and updated with its new products since opening in Vermilion last year.

“There is so much more variety of product now. We see more and more people come in every day. People are commenting; I’m so glad you have this or I’m so glad you have this makeup line now,” said

“We just finished our Valentine’s Day season, and now we are getting ready for Easter, which is going to be huge! It’s going to get bigger and bigger. People will see changes at the end of our isles every two weeks.

Fire Department Purchases Bush Truck The Vermilion Fire Department Society purchased their old fire truck back from the Town of Vermilion and are in the process of converting it into a ‘Bush Buggy’ truck to be used in the spring/summer season.

“It was the Fire Department’s old half-ton truck and the Town purchased a new truck for the Department this year. We have been doing some work to the old truck to try and get it ready for the spring/summer season when we get wild land and bush fires.

We received funding last year and we have been using that to buy new tools so the truck will be ready for the wildfire season. The Fire Department society has also purchased a skid from Webb’s Machinery to put in the back and a 150 gallon tank with a pump on it,” explained Vermilion Firefighter Travis Warman.

Physiotherapy Approaches To Assessment And Treatment

If you are a patient at Masterpiece Therapies, you will have noticed that our physiotherapist, Janine Lange, has been using a new approach to treatment.

Janine has recently attended an internationally-recognized education course designed to help therapists get to the cause of your symptoms faster. Current and future patients will benefit from these new training techniques.

The Integrated Systems Model (ISM) was co-created by Canadian physiotherapist Diane Lee. The purpose of the framework is to treat the whole person by listening to the story of the patient, screening multiple systems (joint, ligament, nerve, muscle, tendon, tissue, organ), and using clinical reasoning skills to locate the “primary driver” - the area of the body that when treated will most alleviate your symptoms. The ISM method suggests that our interpretation of pain is influenced by the location and behaviour of the injury, what we believe, the attitude we have, and how we feel about our situation. Therefore, given the same injury, no two patient experiences will be the same.

Understanding your story is a significant part of the process at Masterpiece Therapies. We strive to listen well, so that we can determine what is most meaningful to you when it comes to your rehabilitation goals, and then work with you to achieve them. Researcher and storyteller Brene Brown says that “when we deny our stories, they define us; when we own our stories, we get to write the ending.” At Masterpiece Therapies, we seek to assist patients to recognize their potential by encouraging active participation in individualized exercise programs, as we work towards developing optimal strategies for function and performance.

The ISM education series is an sixmonth home study and in-person training course that seeks to guide physiotherapists to become better practitioners by applying critical thinking to their current practice, while relying on evidence to inform their choices for treatment. Masterpiece Therapies physiotherapist Janine Lange attended the first part of this course in White Rock, BC in January 2017, and looks forward to attending parts two and three this Spring. From the outset, the mission statement of Masterpiece Therapies has been to “employ practitio-

ners that are motivated by the desire to continuously pursue education.” Janine is proud to be a part of an international group of learners who seek to advance their skills to deliver better patient care, and is excited to share these skills with

Bull Market Young Researchers Encouraged To Apply For CYL Mentorship Beef Cattle Research Council Submitted

The Cattlemen’s Young Leaders (CYL) development program, a national youth initiative by the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA), provides outstanding mentorship opportunities to young beef cattle enthusiasts. The program is geared toward those aged 18-35 interested in developing their industry leadership skills or career potential within the Canadian beef cattle industry. Included in the 16 participants selected for the 2016/17 year was veterinarian student Becky Tees.

The CYL program paired Becky with Dr. Tom Smylie, senior staff veterinarian for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

“I have been so grateful to be selected as one of this year’s CYL mentees. The interview process alone put forth so many amazing networking opportunities and really opened my eyes to the extent of all the young, ambitious producers right here

in Canada. It was a very humbling experience to be in the room with so many forward-thinking young adults that are truly the future of the Canadian Beef Industry.

I am so fortunate to have been paired with Dr. Tom Smylie. Through Dr. Smylie, I have gained a lot of insight into ways that a beef-oriented veterinarian can best serve the industry and its producers. I’ve learned a lot about animal health legislation and policy development and have been lucky enough to be involved in round table discussions with industry leaders and cattle feeder groups from across Canada.

I would strongly encourage any young beef industry enthusiast to consider applying to the CYL program. You have a lot of freedom to cater it to your interests, and the sky is truly the limit with this program.

Vermilion 4H Beef Club Update

The Vermilion 4H Beef Club held its reorganizational meeting on Tuesday, October 11, 2016. We would like to welcome all of our new members and families, and welcome back all of our returning members. It’s a very special year for 4-H this year as the program in Alberta is celebrating its Centennial! Our club’s goal for 2016-2017 is, “Encouraging members to be safe and successful in the livestock industry�.

Our new club leaders are Kris Lehman, general leader; Warren Swanson, beef project leader; Lee Selte, assistant leader; Kathr yn Watson, Creative Options/photography project leader; and Nadine Farkash is our Cleaver Kids leader. We greatly appreciate all the parents who volunteer their time and who make the club run so smoothly and effectively through-

out the year. A new Family Mentorship program was created this year to help new members and families.

Our new executive is President, Cavin Jones; Vice President, Kaylie Krys; Treasurer, Ashley Jones; Secretary, Brie Watson; Club Reporter, Charlotte Wasylik; Historian, Rylan Lehmann and Derian Selte; District Reps, Kaylie Krys and Brie Watson; Phoning Committee, Avary Hickman, Rylan Lehmann, Delainey Selte, and Saige Swanson.

The club’s weigh day was held at North Central Livestock on Sunday, November 20th with members weighing their steers and heifers. Thank you very much to North Central for letting us use the facility. Members from our club and others enjoyed 4-H District Volleyball hosted by the Vermilion 4-H Sheep Club in early December.

The club was very busy at the December meeting which included a club gift

exchange, planning for the Christmas party (laser tag at A Bit Extreme in Lloydminster during the Christmas break in January), and food bank donations.

At our January meeting, Janet Kerr, an instructor at Lakeland College, gave us a very informative presentation on public speaking, to get us ready for our Public Speaking on Sunday, February 5th. Junior speeches: Rylan Lehmann placed first and Katie Zorn placed second. Intermediate speeches: Saige Swanson placed first and Chase Bowman placed second. In Senior speeches, Kaylie Krys placed first and Grace Cleland, placed second. In Intermediate presentations, Avary Hickman placed first and Owen Cleland placed second. In Senior Presentations, Cavin Jones placed first. Congratulation to all the members who participated in the Club’s Communications Day. At our February meeting, we planned

tours of the Pride of the Prairies Bull Show and Sale in Lloydminster next month, as well as of Nor th Central Livestock in Vermilion. At the end of the meeting, Vermilion area cattleman Brian Chrisp spoke to the members about how to star t halter-breaking calves and the night concluded with each member learning how to make a rope halter. We also voted to send two teams and two individuals to Western Canadian Judging at Lakeland College in March.

Va r i o u s e v e n t s c o m i n g u p f o r members include District Communications Saturday, February 25th, Western Regional Leaders Forum and Senior Member Teen Track, and 4-H District Curling Saturday, March 25th at the Lloydminster Curling Rink.

It’s a digital world and today’s kids are growing up in a social reality that includes extensive interactions within multiple platforms. Facebook, Instagram, Snapc hat and tex t messag ing provide opportunities for kids to connect, but unfortunately they can also be used for harm. Cyberbullying c an be defined as using tec h nology— computers, tablets and smar tphones —to harass, threaten, embarrass or demean another person.

Here are some guidelines for parents who want to prevent it.

Pink Day Proclamation Signing

Mayor Bruce MacDuff signed the Pink Day proclamation at the Town Hall in Vermilion, marking the start of Antibullying Awareness Week on February 14.

Members from the RCMP, Victim’s Suppor t and VIBE gathered for the declaration signing, in an ef for t to encourage people in the community to participate in bullying prevention.

This year’s National Pink Shirt Day will take place on February 22. Local businesses will team up and offer ‘part proceeds’ campaigns acting as advocates in support of anti-bullying initiatives.

“It’s great to see the RCMP out to help promote anti bullying today. Most of us have been bullied in our lives at one time or another and it’s not fun so we should stop it.

Bullying is not okay, as a community we need to stand together and work together to find solutions whether it is at school, work, or in the community. It’s fabulous to see the support in the community every Pink Day since it started 7 years ago. Most of the money raised goes towards the pink pens and pencils as a visual reminder for people,” said Pat Calyniuk, VIBE coordinator.

Pink Shirt Day, February 22, 2017

“ Pink Shir t Day ” is a national campaign where people are asked to wear a pink shirt to raise awareness of bullying issues as well as promote kindness. In Canada, the issue of bullying needs more attention than people realize. According to the most recent World Health Organization (WHO) survey on rates of bullying, Canadian youth ranked poorly, between 20th and 21st out of 38 countries. Canada has a lot of room for change and improvement! “Pink Shirt Day” supports this change as it leads to awareness, conversations, education,

and prevention that occur not just on that one day, but all year.

The Pink Shirt Day campaign started when a rural Nova Scotia boy wore a pink shirt to school. Sadly, he was harassed and bullied by a few classmates; they called him a homosexual for wearing pink. What could have turned into a traumatic event for this student actually ended up positively.

There were some witnesses that day who chose to be more than bystanders.

Two Grade 12 students, who witnessed this act of bullying, decided that they would take a stand to show the bullies that their actions were unacceptable.

That night, the boys selflessly bought 50 pink shirts from a local discount store and then went online to encourage all their friends to wear a pink shirt to school the next day to make what they called a “Sea of Pink.” When the bullied student arrived the next day and saw the “Sea of Pink,” witnesses said it was like a weight lifted off his shoulders. The bullies were never heard from again.

The Vermilion Curling Club Hosts Bonspiels

The Vermilion Curling Club hosted their Ladies’ and Men’s bonspiels on the February 9-12 weekend. The ladies had 11 teams enter and the men had 15. The Ladies’ League curling teams each volunteered for a task and collectively did a fabulous job - they decorated, advertised, did media coverage, provided snacks and Saturday breakfast and lunch, had donated door prizes for every ladies bonspiel team, organized a roast beef supper by Crave Catering for both events, and cleaned up at the end. The ladies ran a cash spiel with prizes for the winners of each event, while the men had prizes for the winning teams. The men also ran a Calcutta.

The following ladies teams won: A Event – Swyripa rink, B Event – Roth rink, C Event – King rink, and D Event – Montgomery rink. Tuesday, Februar y 14 was a very exciting and busy day throughout St. Jerome’s. Many students from kindergar ten to Grade 12’s were dressed to the nines as they also celebrated Formal Day. Tuesday morning staff and students of St. Jerome’s’ gathered with members of the Holy Name of Jesus Parish to celebrate our monthly mass. The Grade 5 students were the choir leading everyone in the singing and High School students did the readings, intentions and brought up the gifts. Father Roger’s inspiring words sowed seeds within our hearts. Back at school, the High School students had the chance to Steal Hearts from each other. If you were able to get a student of the opposite sex to talk

you got their heart. The Middle-Level students shared a potluck snack with each other and danced the afternoon away. Elementar y students par ticipated in a variety of Valentine activities and classroom parties exchanging Valentine Cards, cupcakes, cookies and chocolate.

The Grade 10 Leadership Class is very busy working on the St. Jerome’s Annual Carnival, which will take place on Thursday, March 2. They are accepting donations of toys, stuffed animals, jewellery, etc. for the Fish Pond and Jr. Hoop-la if you have been cleaning out the toy box or your children’s closets.

They also need non-perishable food items for the Sr. Hoop-la. Just drop off your donations at the school office or with your child’s homeroom teacher.

On Februar y 9, VES was extremely for tunate to have Science in Motion at our school. The Grade 3 students enjoyed the hands-on activities of conducting a variety of tests (streak, acid, hardness, magnetic) to classify various minerals. Grade 4 students explored the properties of light in several activities and discovered that white light is made up of colored light, light can be reflected, and light can be refracted (changes directions) using lenses. The Grade 5 students attended Complete the Circuit, which was very exciting and hands-on, and covered what electricity is, what open and closed circuits are, and how to make simple circuits and parallel circuits.

Nearly everyone in our school wore red or pink on Valentines’ Day. It was wonderful to see so many individuals participating in another Friends’ Committee dressup day. The next dress-up day will be Backwards Day on February 28.

generous. We collected enough change to send two students to school for their entire primary education. It was exciting to see how students were engaged and willing to create change on a global level.

The BTPS Leadership team from VES (Mrs. Webb and Mrs. Doherty) will be attending their annual Leadership Workshop this week. They are once again ver y happy to be working with Tom Hierck, and look forward to his guidance in working together collaboratively to support students in BTPS. Vermilion Elementary staff have had the opportunity to work with Mr. Hierck to guide us in moving forward on the path of Being the Best We Can Be. Every year, the Grade 2 students write letters to staff members. They compose one letter per week that gets responded to by random staff members. This year, they are trying something different. They are corresponding with the same staff member for an extended period of time, which gives both the child and the adult a chance to get to know each other quite well. It’s a super change.

VES will have their Celebration of Learning Day on February 22 from 5:00-

7:30. This is an opportunity for parents to visit our school and find out what is happening in their child’s class. Please make this your invitation to come to the school and participate in several of the activities awaiting you in the classrooms.

decided to “revamp” previous years and create a whole new atmosphere. The gym was glowing with beautiful twinkling lights and many classic carnival games and snacks. We were fortunate enough to have many alumni and friends of Clandonald School volunteer to run various events and show their Cougar pride. Thank you to our parents for providing baking and lights for us to transform our gym. We would also like to thank JR Robson School and the Vermilion Credit Union for their contributions. As well, a big thank you to Mrs. Jackson for

leading the staff to make sure this event went off without a hitch!

Students will have the opportunity to attend Hockey Hooky this week. We will be driving up to Edmonton as a school and attending an Oil Kings game. This is always a much-anticipated field trip each year, and we know the students cannot wait to attend. Students will be starting swimming lessons in Vermilion this week.

They are very eager to continue their knowledge in the water and are looking forward to starting.

Mannville Says Farewell To Chief Administrative Officer

Mannville’s Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Carla Kooistra will be leaving her position on February 24.

Kooistra said that she has loved her six months in Mannville, but is forced to return to Fort McMurray with the decreased market after losing a tenant.

“I have always liked working in government because it gives people the opportunit y to make a dif ference for the

community that they live in and have a say for themselves, their family, or their community. I also like that is not a stagnant job; there is something different every day,” said Kooistra about her experience.

She went on to say that she and her family are truly going to miss Mannville and the surrounding community.

“We are sad to go, but are happy to have had the experience and wish everyone the best in the future,” said Kooistra.

Vermilion Tigers In The Playoffs Goalie, Dakota Kenyon makes a save for the Vermilion Jr. B. Tigers during Game 1 of their Playoff Season in Wainwright on February 17. Vermilion lost 4 – 2, but Vermilion’s Dakota Kenyon saved 42 of 46 shots, while Wainwright’s goalie only stopped 20 out of 22 shots.

Scoring for Vermilion were Bryce Stepaniuk and Layne Zack.

Vermilion Junior B Tigers President Darrin Farkash said he was delighted his team made it to the playoffs this year.

“We played well at the start of the season, then we had a slump after Christmas and now we are on the upswing again,” said Farkash.

Dewberry Community Hall Receives $5,000 Donation The Western Financial Group in Vermilion made a check presentation donation of $5,000 to the Village of Dewberry Community Hall Society on February 16.

“Western Financial Group has a community infrastructure grant program to support a major community project. This year it was presented to the Village of Dewberry for the purchase and installation of a sound system screen projection unit,” said Western Financial Client Care Associate Helen Whitney.

“We are very grateful for this donation and the money will be put towards a new sound system screen projection unit in the Hall. We got a quote of $13,000 for the cost of installation so this will go a long way towards paying for it,” said Debra Hegedus.

Vermilion’s Alison Jackson Training For Belgium

Professional Cyclist, Alison Jackson nee Farkash will face an exciting weekend of racing in Belgium starting February 25.

Jackson will have between 60 – 80 race days this year, and spends much of the year training and travelling. She is currently representing the BePink Cogeas professional cycling team in Italy.

“The most prestigious race I won last year was the Team Time Trial (TTT) Stage 2 at the Amgen Tour of California, which is a Women’s World Tour event. I also won the high paying Whistler Gran Fondo, and a couple of races in France.

I was the alternate for the 2016 Olympic team and would like to improve my ranking so that I can qualify and represent Canada in Tokyo 2020,” said Jackson of her recent accomplishments and long term goals in cycling.

Jackson went on to say that ballet and gymnastics were activities she did when she was young, and still considers them to be really fun. She finds that involving herself in other activities besides cycling gives her life a lot of balance.

“I have a lot of different thoughts and values that I come back to when racing gets hard to motivate me or inspire me to keep going. One of those is simply the drive to win; to accomplish something whole - something that took your whole body, mind and spirit to accomplish,” said Jackson when asked what pushes or inspires her during a race.

Jackson has a lot of great memories from growing up on a farm near Vermilion. She remembers involving herself in as many sports as possible, and attending and helping to create many crazy - fun youth events that were held at the Parkview Alliance Church.

Jackson attributes her work ethic to her background in agriculture and rural living.

“You aren’t going to get anywhere, or grow anything, or make any money without working for it and working hard; never quitting,” said Jackson.

Travelling for training and racing almost 11 months of the year, Jackson values technology and uses multiple forms to stay connected with friends and family.

Jackson suggests for young athletes to both work hard and have fun, and admitted

that hard work isn’t always fun.

“Be thankful; a good attitude goes a long, long, long way. Also, for those young athletes in Vermilion - yes it is a small town, and maybe there is more opportunity elsewhere, but that is not your limiter. Keep practicing, continue learning, work hard and be thankful. I didn’t find my sport or

become a professional until I was 25 years old. I just keep trying new things, perfecting what I already knew and prayerfully asking God to show me the way.
