“You are the ones that run toward danger when everyone else is running away,” s ai d D ire c tor of Prote c tive Services Orest Popil during the Firefighter’s Appreciation Ball on February 10, at the Kitscoty Hall.

Dignitaries gathered to honour firefighters and first responders in the greater Count y of Vermilion River Region, and Reeve, Daryl Watt shared greetings from the County.

“Our departments have received 700 calls to go out and serve within the last two years,” said Popil.

Af ter the train derailment, Popil noted that Islay (a hamlet with 209 residents), had 75 per cent of fire calls being medical. That means 1/8 of the people in Islay placed a call to the fire department. Islay residents are half an hour from an ambulance bay, so the

medical first response is critical in our departments.

“I want to thank you for being there when people need you,” said Popil.

Service men and women include 158 active firefighters and first responders within the county; including departments in Blackfoot, Clandonald, Islay, Kitscoty, Marwayne, Paradise Valley, and Vermilion, and a partnership with an additional 24 members in the Lloydminster Rescue Squad.

Thanks was given to their families for their forbearance, and to the business community for allowing the volunteers to leave when needed.

Terry Stachniak spoke on how valuable fire training is in this area. The Office Of Fire Commissioner, Ross Bennitt, spoke about the significance of long service medals and mentioned that af ter working in the field, that people often stay because of the qual-

ity of people that they are working with.

Twelve year ser vice medals from Alberta Fire Services were awarded to Brad Parkinson, Dawn Garnier, Kirk Budden, Chris Martin, Dustin Schaumleffel, Martha Spinks, Jeremy Crickard, Mitch Jardine, Kevin Martin, Wayne Roach, and Joe Zizek.

A 40 year nomination was made for Carry Grant.

Jim Smith Memorial Bonspiel

The Vermilion Curling Club hosted the 14th Annual Jim Smith Memorial Junior Curling Bonspiel on February 4 - 5.

The tournament uses the name to honour curling enthusiast, Jim Smith, a former J.R. Robson School teacher, and promoter of kids curling. However a

Vermilion bonspiel geared towards youth, has been going on for 40 plus years.

The bonspiel was split up into three divisions of Grades 4 - 6, Junior High, and Senior High.

Five elementar y teams, 12 junior high teams and 12 senior high teams competed for a total of 29 teams and 116 curlers. For some participants it was their

first bonspiel, while others came back as part of tradition.

“Shelby Roth is an alumni of the Vermilion Junior Curling Program and the Jim Smith Memorial Junior Bonspiel. She is now in her second year of teaching in Viking, and decided to bring her junior high team back to participate in the annual junior bonspiel,” said Joanne McCrae.

The J.R. Robson Boys Team who entered will also be playing at High School Districts in Vermilion on February 15, and High School Zones in Lamont on February 21 - 22.

Curlers had a blast during the bonspiel, and were rewarded with a KFC banquet and awards ceremony on Saturday evening.

A bright white 2015 Dodge Dart is currently up for grabs with the Vermilion Habitat for Humanity Adopt-A-Home Raffle.

Five hundred tickets have been printed, and one lucky winner will walk away with the keys to a spanking new sporty ride.

“It’s a cool car and who wouldn’t like to win a car for 50 bucks! We purchased the car at a greatly reduced price ($18,190) from Vermilion Chrysler.

We will be having days at the Vermilion Co-op and the Lakeland Mall where we will bring the car out for display so people can see the car, and decide if they would like to purchase a ticket. When the raffle is over,

we are done all of our fundraising! And we are going to have a big party,” said the relieved Habitat of Humanity Chair, Linda Jacejko.

Jacejko also added that the family who adopted the Habitat for Humanity home last year are well settled in now, and all of the work on the house has been completed.

“The Vermilion community has two Habitat for Humanity homes now. Your money always stays in the community when you donate to Habitat for Humanity.

Fentanyl Presentation Creates Awareness

A Fe n t a n y l p r e s e n t a t i o n a b o u t current street drug trends and overdose prevention organized by Vermilion Citizens on Patrol (COP) took place at the Lakeland College Alumni Theatre in Vermilion on February 7.

According to Alberta Health Services, 343 people died of apparent drug overdoses related to Fentanyl in Alberta last year. In 2015, that number was 257. In the last three months of 2016, there were 111 overdose deaths involving Fentanyl in Alberta. That number is more than two times higher than it was in the last three months of 2015.

Health professionals, emergency ser vices, and law enforcement see Fentanyl use at a crisis point. All of Alberta first responders now have the ability to give life-saving Naloxone by injection when responding to an overdose call.

Naloxone can prevent an overdose from becoming fatal when it’s given immediately and followed up with emergency medical support. The government is now providing injectable Naloxone kits and training to first responders at no cost.

Robert Snow, paramedic, and supervisor for the Prairie EMS Vermilion

division says he is a supporter of all first responders having access to the Narcan drug.

“I think it ’s excellent that Narcan is now so readily available to first responders and citizens. Having it on the ambulance can save a person’s life. The problem with Fentanyl is that victims can overdose very quickly and stop breathing quickly, so the quicker we can get them Narcan, the better the outcome will be.

Our crews have been involved with Fentanyl overdoses. I think the reason Narcan was not as readily available before was that there wasn’t as big a problem with overdoses as there is now,” said Snow.

Vermilion Citizens on Patrol (COP) Treasurer B o b Er nst said that the COP thought it would be a good idea to bring in the experts this year due to the rise in the number of deaths across the province.

“Any way we can get the information out there is a good thing,” said Ernst.

RCMP Cpl Brad McIntosh from Edmonton presented on current street drug trends.

Drug dealers may sell Fentanyl as fake Oxycodone. Buyers think they’re getting Oxycodone, but they’re getting another opioid drug that has Fentanyl and other substances in it. It may be hiding in other street drugs making them even more dangerous. Fentanyl is 100 times more toxic than Morphine, Heroin, or Oxycodone,” said Cpl McIntosh.

According to Alberta Health Services, if you use opioids a lot, you may find that you develop a tolerance and need more and more to feel the same ef fects. You can become mentally and physically dependent on Fentanyl.

Dairy Open House

Lakeland College hosted an Open House providing information on the plans for their new Dairy Learning Centre on February 6, at the Centre for Sustainable Innovation in Vermilion.

Project Manager, Craig Marple was there to answer questions from the community and display the state of the art designs.

The land has been cleared along RR70 establishing the new site, but construction has not yet started. The new facility will be twice to three times the size of the current 30-year-old facility measuring 47,000 sq. ft.

The facility will include a classroom as well as a skylight, and public viewing mezzanine that is sure to be a hit during the next open house before the cows move in, as well as a good way to monitor barn activity.

It will offer space for 120 cows; 60 in a conventional milking parlour, and 60

in a robotic milking system. The feeding system will have robotic delivery, and the water and electricity consumption will be monitored on both sides to allow efficiency assessments to be completed by industry professionals.

The lagoon that is currently on campus will be decommissioned, and the one built on the new site will be further from town, and lined with an impermeable synthetic liner.

With cow comfort and biosecurity being top priorities, Lakeland College is the first post-secondary institution in Alberta to complete an Environmental Farm Plan.

They also received a 2016 Quality Milk Award from Alberta Milk.

“The design is based around the latest industry standards, and we’re happy to get the word out there,” said Craig Marple.

Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day, yippy, not!!

Sense the sarcasm in those first few words?

Well, that’s because I think Valentine’s Day is one of the most overrated holidays of the year. It is full of commercialism and brings displeasure to many people of our worldly population.

I remember in elementary school how Valentine’s Day dictated your popularity.

If you received a few Valentines, then you were not as popular as the students who received a lot of the folded up love notes.

Think about that for a second, you’re a young child, and already your worth is being predetermined by the number of stupid cartoon love notes secretly handed out by your classmates.

Imagine how a child would feel when they count their Valentine’s and only have a

I can remember how those students were belittled because of it by their classmates.

In my opinion, Valentine giving in schools should be eliminated completely. If schools want to do something to commemorate the day, they could ask their students to write about something in their life they love, like a family pet, the love they feel for their community or the love they feel for their family, etc.

For the teen and adult population, Valen-

tine’s Day is often a reminder that they are single and have not yet found their Valentine and often vocalize their hate for Valentine’s Day. Personally, I think it is ridiculous how people beat themselves up just because they are single. Being single can sometimes be a blessing in itself and be far more beneficial to you than being in a relationship where you are not happy. Take the day to explore the things you love about yourself and the life you live.

Each year you see men standing in stores and flower shops purchasing expensive items to give their sweetheart and women who hunt tirelessly trying to find a gift that their sweetie may actually like.

Why? Because as a society we have been conditioned to believe Valentine’s Day is the most important day for lovers and you show it by buying them lavish gifts. I don’t know about you, but the material things mean nothing to me, I would rather wake up to a kiss, and an I love you each day than being bought something just because he is told by

Files of note: Vermilion RCMP responded to a complaint of a light coloured pickup truck travelling West in the Eastbound lanes of Highway 16 near Innisfree, Alberta.

The male threatened to assault an individual with a weapon as well as burn down their house. A 37-year-old male was identified as the person making the threats and was arrested for same. I certainly had a full day yesterday; one I was looking forward to that felt like an eternity… the stork finally brought our puppy’s Miss Noel and Sir Mukluk home. I was overwhelmed by the sight of these two huge fur balls.

They were bigger than I expected and so beautiful I could not help but be instantly “twitterpated”…both with personality’s that grew on you very quickly.

They are a handful, to say the least, in more ways than one but in a good sense, it was all I could do to hold both for a picture, they are chunks…Sir Mukluk is simply massive and with a hairdo to match.

I just wanted to hold both pups and get to know them better. However, I had to let them get used to their new home and explore a bit. Also, there was a big hurdle for them to conquer. That obstacle, of course, was in the form of a certain Miss Oohohh; she sure didn’t know what to make of these two fur balls invading her home. She of course in my mind is still a baby herself and was very curious. And of course this big full grown clown of a dog that wasn’t their mom or dad…looked very menacingly, and I have to admit Miss Oohohh kinda was, at first she simply just wanted to get their scent.The pups a little nervous and also a little scared were very leery of her; I wasn’t sure what Miss Oohohh’s reaction was going to be so I kept a vigilant eye on them all.

I was proud of Miss Oohohh who just wanted to play and was excited to have new playmates, at first it was very cute to watch them interact, but now training camp was to commence immediately. Ok, it wasn’t really a boot camp scenario, but an exercise in the form of a good walk is part of the training. First, they got to see their new kennel and house in the barn filled with fresh straw and wool blanket bedding.They approved instantly and didn’t want to leave their new accommodation’s, but a full out hike was on the schedule. ers, and soon they seemed relaxed, that is until Miss Oohohh decided to be a clown.

She has this game on our walks that we call “Zoom Zoom” where she runs full out in figure eight like circles by me at the speed of mock chicken, fun for me but a little scary for the puppies. That’s when they started to get a little scared of Miss Oohohh, so I had to calm her down and try to carry on with our walk; the pups loved the snow and treed land trails.

After a grueling march, which was only a behind the shop through the duck pond trail and back, but for the short legged dust mops…a good walk, just before we went into the shop for a fresh water drink for them and that is when things got weird.

Miss Oohohh has this habit of pushing her stuffed toys and little kittens with her nose which is more like little affectionate nudges, well she proceeded to give Sir mukluk about a half dozen of these. Sir Mukluk taking this as a threat growled and bit Miss Oohohh’s nose. Miss Oohohh went into self-defence mood and growled back standing over the pup, this, of course, terrified the little pup, so I scooped them up and took them into the shop to calm down. I kept them separated for a break, much to the disliking of Miss Oohohh, after an hour, or so I let the pups out to try solving the problem, and now Miss Oohohh has a new game it’s called run fast and nudge a pup on the way by. For her it’s fun, but now the pups are quite scared of her, Miss Noel a little more outgoing than Sir Mukluk simply stayed by my feet knowing I would stop Miss Oohohh from bothering her. So as Sir Mukluk lagged behind and hid anywhere he could he was the target of the game, now Miss Oohohh doesn’t realize that this fur ball is her future soul mate.

This is a planned arranged marriage if you will, for Miss Oohohh he will be the sire of her pups, and she also doesn’t know that these pups will very soon make her look like pup herself.

Although Miss Oohohh is big for the breed standards, these pups are going to be on the huge side much bigger than her, and I am sure some revenge will be remem-

I had the pups in the shop for the rest of the evening, made them a little bed box with blankets and some new toys, fed them some bones I have been saving; all the while Miss Oohohh peeked in the window with a little whine.

She then went to the house and asked to be let in, something she never did before if I was outside or in the shop. My wife Roxanne let her in, and she went straight to her pillow, Roxanne feeling sorry for her gave her a couple of her favourite cookies. She wouldn’t even touch her cookies and just laid there with a pout and sad look on her face, so Roxanne texted me on the phone telling me to come in and comfort her. I took the pups for another little stressfree walk, then tucked them in their kennel for the evening.

When I went into the house and sat on the couch, Miss Oohohh didn’t wag her tail or move, so I had to lay with her on her pillow, cuddle her a bit and say I was sorry, and she was still my baby. After a while, I got up and sat on the couch again, and she ate her cookies.

At bedtime I took her out for our normal long walk just the two of us, then tucked her in her kennel for the night, I gave her

bedtime treat and walked back to the house, she let out a “whoo whoo” sad howl I never heard before, yup it broke my heart.

Today is another day, and the adventure continues, I just let Miss Oohohh out for our normal daily morning walk, and to her, it was just like the good ole days. They will all adjust, probably better than I will, but I am extremely happy with the new pups.

The pups technically Roxanne’s Christmas presents, Sir Mukluk was going to be my main focus with him and Miss Oohohh and Miss Noel was to be Roxanne’s to spoil.

However, Miss Noel has taken a liking to me, and Sir Mukluk has taken a liking to Roxanne, guess we will all just have to be a family.

Stay tuned; I am sure this will be an adventure that will be one of the most important and enjoyable than I have partaken to in a long while.

When The Smoke Clears If you don’t love and enjoy what you are doing…it may be called daily life instead of an adventure.

I sometimes think about why so many of us stay involved in sports…whether it is sitting in the stands, coaching behind the bench, or being out there playing...it might be the things you learn about yourself that are what really keeps you coming back. There are days when that love of the game is what gets you through the cold sitting on the sidelines, packing bags of heavy equipment around after a tough loss, staying up late to plan a practice, nursing the bumps, bruises or breaks that occasionally happen, or even the drama that happens

grown since to a big deal. Facilities and opportunity have a lot to do with a sport succeeding. I always thought we were a lucky bunch here growing up…because I enjoyed playing sports and there were so many sports to try and parents or teachers who fostered them. Over the years I grew to appreciate that as those things were not always the case in other places I went to.

I left out one sport: Soccer…because it wasn’t one of the more glamorous sports when I was growing up, but circumstances along the way made it become less like a sport and more like some sort of personal karma.

Maybe you find that too eventually gravitating to one and it becomes part of you and fills your time. I love hockey, baseball, and football maybe even more, playing or watching them, but sometimes your passion chooses you and you just have to figure that out via trial and tribulation: it really is the “One”.

Maybe you started by just watching and made that step from the sidelines onto the ice or the field. It could be that first time… or one game, one play, or moment that gets you in it. Maybe it is a sports idol like a Bobby Orr or Connor McDavid, or the comradery you build with teammates and challenging yourself to improve.

A simple pride in your effort, your team, or your hometown and in what was accomplished, whether you struggled or succeeded.

My time growing up in Vermilion there were all the usual sports and athletics to be around to be true…ice and field sports like Hockey, Ringette, Figure Skating, Curling, Football, Softball. Court sports like Basketball, Volleyball, Badminton and even Tennis. Athletics like Track and Field as well. But there were others too which were popular at times but didn’t stick around every year or weren’t before but are now. I remember playing Broomball and Baseball (or Hardball we called it then), but not Lacrosse which has

The first thing I noticed when I arrived in Brazil, (aside from the airpor t chaos, d i f fer e nt l a n g u ag e and smells) was that it took nearly twice as long to blow dry my hair! The humidity was amazingly welcome, coming from the dry Alberta winters we always seem to have. I had kissed goodbye the everyday battle of dry skin and chapped lips, but only for a few weeks! Back in my home town I missed out on something so beautiful and somewhat rare, something that can only happen with that magical thing called humidity.

Every once in a while during the frigid Alberta winters, you can look outside and see the heav y cris pnes s that enraptures the entire outside world. I can’t even count the number of photographs I have taken with thick barbed wire fences, trees, even the beauty that grows on the handlebars of my Childs’ tricycle! Heavy humidity paired with below freezing temperate allows frost to grow, layer upon layer, until the power lines droop with the weight and even the finest grasses look thick and fuzzy!

I imagine people who live in places like Brazil must see photos of this phenomenon and just figure it’s nothing more than life in a cold place. Little do they know it’s not frequent, and yes(!) it has an actual name! Hoar Frost is a beautiful, magical, destructive thing.

Yes, unfortunately I was gently reminded

how destructive hoar frost can be: power lines sag and eventually break, causing power outages and the like.

When I think of hoar frost though, the most prevalent feeling that comes across me is some sor t of Disney wonderment. It’s like sun shining through an April shower, or even the scene in the Wizard of Oz when the poppies make everyone fall asleep. This thick frost brings the magic that envelopes you and takes your breath away, and it put my mind in a full-out creative mode. I like to think I’m pretty level headed and well rounded, but in all actuality it

is creativity and the ever-pulling artistic license that dominates my heart. A morning with the hoar frost like today invites a whole different calibre of artist to emerge! In the last two days since the frost set in and began to “grow” I’ve written three quarters of a song, designed a company logo, and delved further into my fiddle lessons. Ahhhh, humidity is so magical! Thank you hoar frost! Please come again, because I love these sorts of days.

Me being a new kid…lying there not being able to breathe, looking like I was dead…all my classmates ran back inside the school like rabbits. To this day I don’t blame them at all...I would have ran too.

What I learned that early September 1977 day getting back up to go inside to Mr. Dixon’s Grade 3 class was that getting knocked down wasn’t something that was going to stop me from doing something I liked.

After many years off from soccer, I came back to playing and started coaching. It’s less about the wins and losses really and more about enjoying just being around “the Game”. Everything may not be the same as you remember when you started out…but the fact you are still able to be on the field or get the chance to ‘pay it forward’…makes it worth it. From all those who helped you at the beginning, pass it to the next generation developing a love for the game.

Take a good look, because it doesn’t last long.

Students gleamed with wonder as Vermilion Elementary School hosted four Science In Motion sessions from Telus World Of Science representatives on February 9.

Believers that science is all around us, the Science In Motion program aims to provided mobile presentations throughout rural Alberta. The Grade 5 students learned about electricity and had the opportunity to work on circuit boards. The Grade 3 students examined minerals and discussed igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks.

“Most igneous rocks can be easily used for tools,” said Steven McKerrall.

With their unit coming up in a few weeks, McKerrall challenged the students

“Minerals are the building blocks of rocks,” said the Grade 3 students.

The Grade 4 students had the opportunity to learn about light and shadows, while the Grade 6 students were privileged to experience an inflatable dome where they learned about sky science and space.

Discussions included the solar system and moon phases, constellations and mythology, and using the big dipper to determine seasons.

Bringing her science and teaching degrees together, Whitney Horban loves her position as an Outreach Coordinator for the Telus World Of Science.

‘Rembetika Hipsters’ Bringing A Bit Of Greece To Vermilion

Greek society didn’t want to promote their lowly Rebetiko musicians throughout the ages, but gradually, it has been promoted by use in movies and supported by listeners around the world.

Authentic Greek melodies accompanied a mix of Middle Eastern melodies allow this music to break through violent culture clashes, religious, political, and personal struggles.

The Rembetika Hipsters have grown to include seven members who are all singers and instrumentalists. They will be performing a mix of originals and compositions in order to bring their Vermilion audience real and rebellious Greek folk music.

The Vermilion Folk Club will be hosting the show at the Vermilion Legion at 8 p.m.

A passionate and cultural music experience will take place on February 25, as the Vermilion Folk Club hosts the Rembetika Hipsters.

The band has been entertaining Canadians with the traditional Greek genre of Rebetiko for over twenty years.

The Rebetiko genre is most relatable to a form of outlaw blues. Rebetiko songs are often played with a stringed instrument called a bouzouki, and tell tales of excessive hurt. Through centuries of poverty, drugs and alcohol, prison, war, etc, musicians were challenged to keep this soulful music alive.

Bouzouki stems from the Turkish word ‘bozouk’, which means broken. Rebetiko stems from the Turkish word ‘rebet’, which means rebellious or disobedient. High

Those who live in a cit y or town seldom think about the equipment that delivers water to their home – they just turn on the tap and trust that high quality drinking water will pour out whenever they need it. But if you’re a rural landowner with a private water well, you don’t have that luxury. There isn’t a team of employees working around the clock to ensure your water is safe to drink – it’s up to you. Fortunately, in Alberta there are plenty of excellent resources available through the Working Well program and several government agencies to help you manage and maintain your water well. “There’s a lot to know about water,� admits Joe Harrington, one of five agricultural water specialists with Alberta Agriculture and Forestr y. “ We take calls every day relating to water wells and we participate in workshops coordinated through the provincial Working Well program. In addition to Working Well, there are many resources available to Alberta’s well owners.�

The Working Well program offers province-wide, hands-on workshops

for well owners to learn the basics of groundwater, well construction, common well problems, contamination risks, importance of well reclamation and best management practices. The workshops are incredibly valuable and provide participants a chance to learn directly from water experts. “Before this workshop, I felt a lot of fear about our well because we had well pumping problems when we moved to the country,� said a participant who attended a recent workshop in the MD of Foothills. “It was a mystery to me how we ever even got water!

When it comes to targeting millennials, Alberta producers and food processors may benefit from emphasizing their businesses sustainability and ethical business practices, as well as focusing on convenience and flavour variety.

Millennials make up approximately 1/3 of the world’s population. In 2015, they were between 15-34 years old and totalled 9.5 million in Canada. “As a group, they’re more ethnically diverse and well educated than any previous generation,” says Ava Duering, competitiveness analyst, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF). “According to Statistics Canada, millennials are projected to increase in population to 2050 while the remaining segments of the population will experience a significant downturn.”

Millennials And Food

Duering says that millennials are environmentally and socially conscious and value transparency in company business. They base their purchasing decisions on food that has been raised sustainably and ethically by businesses that are open and transparent about their operations.

“Millennials lead the way in favoring organic ingredients, and products that are locally grown. 30 per cent of millennials eat certified organic food. They don’t like to spend too much money but they will pay more for organic and local food because they value supporting their community and what they deem to be healthy.”

Duering says that another trait millennials share is a penchant for snack foods.

“Millennials are snacking more than any other generation, According to trend watchers, 35 per cent of meals eaten by millen-

nials are snacks where foods traditionally served at breakfast, lunch and dinner are combined. They enjoy variety and value the experience of trying new and exotic food.”

Technology also plays a key role for millennials who often use apps and social media to learn and communicate about food.

“According to a recent study, one quarter of them indicated a high interest in online shopping if their regular grocery store offered it,” says Duering. “According to the same study, 41 per cent of millennials use mobile shopping apps and 64 per cent use an app because it saves them money.”

Convenience is often a key consideration in food purchases for millennials which is reflected in their greater use of frozen meals and other easy-to prepare products. Millennials are also spending 44 per cent of their food budget on dining out.

Millennials want variety and diverse flavors as they come from various ethnic backgrounds, notes Duering. “According to a recent study 40 per cent order something different every time they visit a restaurant. Millennials want food items that are fresh, creative and made just for them.

“Bottom line is that using technology and social media to market company products and values can also help to reach the tech-savvy millennials. Snacking is also important to millennials and spicy and exotic flavoured snacks offer potential market opportunities. Bull Market Reducing Risk With Extended Winter Grazing Video Series

Managing Risk in Winter Grazing Systems is a new video series now available for viewing on Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF)’s YouTube channel.

“There’s been lots of information published on the many benefits to extending the grazing season in to the winter months such as the resulting reduction in time and money allocated to harvesting, transporting and dispensing feed throughout the winter months and spreading manure and other nutrients directly on the fields,” says Grant Lastiwka, forage/livestock business

specialist, AF. “However, what’s less readily available for cattle producers and new entrants coming into the industry is information about how to wisely use winter grazing systems within their ranching operations.”

In response, the West-Central Forage Association, Lakeland Agricultural Research Association, Chinook Applied Research Association and Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, also with some Alberta Beef Producer funding, jointly led a Growing Forward 2 project over the last two years in collaboration with 17 Alberta producer winter graziers from across the province to make information on winter grazing systems more

available.

“The collaboration created this new series of 47 videos in which Alberta cattle ranchers share what they have learned in reducing risk in winter grazing practices such as swath, bale, straw/ chaff bunch, corn grazing and stockpiled forages.”

The main topics addressed in the series are fencing, feed quality, weather challenges, water accessibility, management practices, managing for animal type and wildlife issues.

“As the producers that participated would attest, grazing cattle through the challenges of extremes in winter weather is a lifelong learning process,

must be planned with flexibility in mind, and plans adjusted quickly to meet the changing situations that arise,” says Lastiwka. “Cattle prices change, but to turn a profit, more often than not, ranchers need to consider lower input cost grazing-based winter feeding systems.”

The Farmers’ Advocate Office (FAO) has been contacted by landowners seeking clarification on why a company other than the one listed on title might be leading on the abandonment and reclamation of a well site.

“A well site or other facilit y may be registered on title to a particular

company, so it can be surprising to a landowner when a different company comes in to abandon or reclaim a site,” says Jeana Schuurman, rural engagement and communications specialist for the Farmers’ Advocate Office (FAO).

“Under provincial legislation, other companies with a beneficial or legally undivided share in the licence are referred to as Working Interest Partici-

p a n t s ( W I P s). T h e s e c o m p a n i e s would’ve received some sort of financial benefit when times were good, but when the primar y licensee became insolvent, the Alberta Energy Regulator can look to the WIPs to lead on the abandonment or reclamation. The WIP would be responsible for the costs proportionate to their share, and the rest would be covered by the Orphan

Well Association. Landowners should be aware that a WIP is not responsible for unpaid rentals; a landowner may apply to the Surface Rights Board (SRB) for recovery of outstanding rentals.”

Farmers Encouraged To Adopt Greener Methods

Submitted Canadian farmers could soon benefit from major research efforts in eco-friendly agriculture. This type of farming is increasingly valued in an industry where environmental questions are becoming central to all spheres of activity.

Last fall the Canadian government granted a sum of $850,000 to an agricultural college in Truro, Nova Scotia, for the study and development of on-farm tools for applying nitrogen. With this investment, government authorities hope to ensure a more profitable, sustainable, and environmentally responsible future in the interest of farmers and agriculture in general.

As partnerships between the agricultural sector, the government, and Canadian

universities, such projects aim to improve the profitability of producers through ecofriendly agricultural technologies. The Truro investment will be used to develop greenhouse gas mitigation technologies, which will lead to better soil fertility, reduced nitrous oxide emissions, and a decrease in factors having a negative impact on the environment, such as water contamination.

The Global Research Alliance, an international network of more than 30 member countries, including Canada, will coordinate and increase agricultural research on greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation in agriculture. These new mitigation technologies and beneficial management practices will soon be available to farmers right here in The government hopes to ensure a more profitable, sustainable, and ecological future for agriculture. Alberta Agriculture and Forestry has updated its Soil Information Viewer to help users better understand the province’s soils.

“The viewer accesses soil information stored in database tables called the Agricultural Regions of Alberta Soil Inventory Database (AGRASID),” says David Spiess, geographical information systems engineer, AF, Edmonton. “The information in the database looks at the ability of Alberta

“We’ve done some upgrades on the viewer based on client feedback. It’s still the same information but now it’s pack-

aged into the five different workflows our clients felt would be of the most use. We’ve also added graphical tools and buffering options. The viewer is also now accessible on mobile devices and it automatically optimizes itself for whatever device you are running it on.”

Spiess says the viewer is the subject of an upcoming conference in February.

“We’re doing a session at the Alberta Soil Science Workshop on February 15 in Lethbridge. It’ll go through the fundamentals of getting started with the viewer, how

Bullying is still a major problem in our schools, workplaces, homes, and over the Internet.

VIBE Wellness Coordinator Patricia Calyniuk said that it is important to take the message of anti-bullying to the community and talk openly with people about bullying on Pink Day.

“It’s our goal to make the message of anti-bullying something people will remember all year long. It is so important that victims of bullying know they are not alone and there is help and support available.

Wearing a pink shir t on this day sends a strong message to victims of bullying that others care. Often, the simple act of wearing a shirt can start conversations - conversations can be a big step towards healing and helping!

A Splash Of Crash Test Dummies At St. Jerome’s School

Goodwill and exuberance were contagious as Crash Test Dummies Drummer; Mitch Dorge gave an “In Your Face & Interactive” presentation at St. Jerome’s School on February 7.

While sharing the history of his drumming career, Dorge used an honest approach and combined musical and personal challenges for students to become involved and engaged.

Drumming since he was 6-years-old, Dorge had an abundance of experiences to share and detailed each one with the background of why he was affected in certain situations. As well as travelling the world experiencing the life of a rock star, he has also been a drum teacher and worked in radio, television, and theatre.

After years of travelling with the band, a spontaneous series of events brought

about the band’s keyboardist Ellen Reid letting Dorge know why they had hired him.

“We hired you because of the positive energy you bring to the situation. You give 100 per cent, and you help others all the time with a happy disposition,” His natural story telling ability incorporated several life lessons encouraging students to make informed choices, and to be there for their friends. With the response from the students being so huge, some even received a rock star hug.

“When you want a positive response out of people, you just have to ask or push the right button,” said Dorge who soon had hundreds of students clapping in unison and drumming on their laps.

Dorge wanted the students to have every opportunity to change the world and challenged them to submit their ideas.

“Life is way too short not to be happy,” said Dorge.

New signage and a new dairy facility were a couple of the topics discussed during the Vermilion Town Council meeting on February 6.

After receiving positive feedback for the directional signs in Vermilion’s industrial areas, requests were made for the downtown core and Railway Avenue. One pylon sign (smaller than the existing ones in the industrial area) will be purchased to

draw attention to these areas.

At the cost of $32,000, the new backlit sign will measure 16 ft high by 13 ft wide and feature directional arrows but no business names. The town is limited as to where they will be able to place the sign with overhead power lines and not wanting to obstruct the view of pre-existing signs.

“It will be cheaper but will yield no revenue. The sign will be funded by reserves or grants,” said Town of Vermil-

ion Manager Dion Pollard.

Lakeland College representatives attended to discuss the plans for the new Dairy Learning Centre. An amendment was made to Bylaw 1-2017 regarding a one-time grant for livestock within a 2-mile radius. The proposed development lies within the county IDP area.

“Consideration is being given because of the type of education facility running it,” said Councillor Caroline McCauley.

“I’m glad they’re going to line this one

as the existing one wasn’t,” said Mayor Bruce MacDuff of the lagoon that will accompany the new Dairy Learning Centre.

With the amendment carried, Lakeland College is allowed to move forward with the facility.

Winter Runners Brave Extreme Cold Temperatures

You may have noticed some runners out recently and wondered who in their right mind would be running in these harsh minus winter temperatures.

The Denwood Outdoors Athletics Club (DOAC) running group is who!

The group has been out running, with some members training for the Hypothermic Half Marathon, since early November last year running lengths of 5 -10 km and up to 18 km in the minus temperatures.

The tough winter run aka the Annual Hypothermic Half Marathon is a winter half marathon event, which also includes 5 km and 10 km runs on the day, held in the Edmonton River Valley on February 26.

“Once the cold weather hits, you se e w h o t he real tou g h o ne s are.

When the going gets tough the tough gets going,” said Goguen.

“I give advice on how to dress the newer winter runners, but the best way to learn is to just go out there and do a bit of trial and error, and keep making adjustments every run until you figure it out for yourself. Not everybody is the same, some people might need to wear one jacket, but another person might need to wear more layers. If we are only doing a quick run, you won’t be in danger of getting frost bitten. As long as you are moving - you are producing a lot of heat, running in winter is not really that extreme, people think

it’s extreme because they don’t do it and they don’t understand it. As long as you dress appropriately, once you start going you will be too warm versus being too cold.

We always d o dif ferent r uns for different levels of fitness and different kilometer distances. The more people we get to come out the more people can run with someone of their own strength, so it’s more encouraging,” added Goguen.

Edmonton Hypothermic Run Coordinator Justin Ng says there will be 480 people turning out for the run in Edmonton on February 26.

Last year it was warm, and people didn’t need to wear as many layers,” said Ng. Elizabeth Anne Marshall 1937 – 2017 Anne died suddenly and unexpectedly at the University of Alberta Hospital on January 25th. She was Gerry Marshall’s beloved bride for nearly 56 years and she is greatly missed by both Gerry and their son Brett.

Anne is also survived by two brothers, John Stewart of Vermilion and Donald Stewart (Jeanie) of Prince Albert, as well as by two sisters, Dorothy – Jean Hiller (Robert) of Edmonton and Ruth Kujat (Bill) of Calgary. She will also be greatly missed by an extensive, extended family, the girls in her bridge club and her many friends.

Anne was born to Elmore McKay (Stew) Stewart and Helen Kathleen (Kae) Stewart (Craig) of Vermilion, Alberta. She graduated from Vermilion High School as an honor student and as well, was a prominent player on many school and town sports teams.

She then went on to the University of Alberta where she was a gold medalist and earned degrees in both science and education.

In addition, she was a member of the University competitive swimming team and the synchronized swim team. She was also active in the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.

Following University, Anne was a teacher with the Edmonton Public School System until she quit to raise a family.

Anne first met Gerry when he moved into Vermilion in grade eight. They soon became friends and started dating in high school. They were married while Gerry was still in University and lived a long and happy time together.

Anne loved to travel and accompanied her teacher husband on many high school field trips to Britain and Europe.

She not only played the role of teacher and mentor but often, also as “mom” to many students. She was a wonderful addition to any school trip. Anne and Gerry also travelled extensively together in both Europe and Canada.

During Brett’s public school years Brett, Anne and Gerry travelled to numerous places in western Canada while tent camping. Anne and Brett both loved the lake and the family spent a great deal of time there. In later years, the family spent time in Arizona regularly during the winter.

Anne’s favorite place in the whole world was her lake cottage at Jackfish Lake in Saskatchewan. A place she had spent summers since the age of five. It was her place of peace, quiet, childhood friends and joy. Plus, the lake had a great ice cream stand.

Anne decided a long time ago that it was just fine to leave this world without a funeral, thus, according to her wishes there will be no service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of choice.

On Tuesday, February 7, Grade 6 to 12 students got to meet the drummer from the Crash Test Dummies, Mitch Dorge, and spend the afternoon with him. Mitch’s presentation focused on making responsible choices. The purpose of his presentation is to encourage teens to follow their dreams, set goals for themselves and to make the choices that will help them be successful in the future. On the topic of drugs, for example, he talks about marijuana, cocaine and crystal meth. He discusses how these drugs are made, how they make their way into North America, how many lives are affected in the process and the cost and consequences involved if you decide to use

them. The students really enjoyed Mitch’s presentation and a few students even got to try playing his drums.

The St. Jerome’s Junior Boys Curling team travelled to Marwayne on Tuesday, February 7 to compete in the Highway 16 Championship. The boys played three games and each game came down to a decision by the last rock. The team failed to make the playoffs, but learned a lot about curling and sportsmanship. They represented St. Jerome’s like true Spartans. Congratulations to Dawson Riley, Bodyn Riley, Robert Thompson and Carter Thompson.

On Februar y 9, six St. Jerome’s students, along with students from the Vermilion area, attended a Learn-to-Curl Clinic hosted by Heather Nedohin, Canadian Scotties Champion. The curlers were

privileged to receive on and off ice instruction from a world-renowned curler and gained a wealth of knowledge about the sport.

Classes from kindergarten to Grade 6 took turns attending Farm Safety Presentations on Wednesday, February 8. Each presentation teaches a different aspect of safety from safety around horses, cattle, etc. to driving ATV’s properly, lawn tractor safety and a variety of other topics. The students get to play a fun trivia game to review the concepts they have covered.

Science 30 students got hands on experience learning about the heart as they dissected animal hearts last week during class.

Both the Grade 6/7 Girls and Boys Basketball teams participated in a tournament at Holy Rosary in Lloydminster on

February 4. Both teams played with great skill and sportsmanship. Congratulations to the boys for placing fourth in the tournament and the girls for winning the Consolation Championship. The Jr. “A” boys and girls teams hosted Kitscoty on Monday, February 6. The Girls defeated Kitscoty, however after a hard fought battle the boys were unable to get a win. The Sr. Girls were in Ryley for the February 4 weekend.

They split their games winning two and losing two. Good work girls!

Last week, on Tu e s d ay, Fe b r u ary 7, J. R.’s junior mixed Curling won all three games in the round robin and won Pool C in Innisfree. Now, with Kera Deroo (skip), Indira Speck as third, Steven Bodurka as second, and Austin Bodurka and James Matters alternating as lead, they’re moving on to BTPS Highway 16 Finals in Provost on February 16. In senior curling, J. R. will host Districts on February 15, and winners will advance to Zones in Lamont on February 21 and 22.

VES hosted its 18th Science Fair on February 3. The gym was a buzz with excitement as students explained their projects. There were 66 Grade 1-6 students who participated and they created 43 projects. Projects included parts of the earth, training your hamster, which batteries last longer, tooth decay, and which brand of gum stretches the furthest. Thanks to the students and community judges – Cpl. Buckingham, Dave Eremko, Geoff Faull, Jim King, Ann Lockwood, John Minchin, Terry Welker - for making this year’s Science Fair a memorable one.

On February 6, students who reached their end of January AR goal had the awesome opportunity to go to the gym with a student from a buddy class and read together for the first half of a class.

Then for the next half, the students danced to Just Dance videos, as our school’s AR motto is Actively Reading, Reading to Be Active.

Vermilion Elementary School is pleased to team up with Baba Jenny’s Ukrainian Foods once again for our spring fundraiser. There will be four varieties of perogies offered in bags of two dozen with 50 per cent of the funds going directly back to VES. All proceeds raised will support class field trips. The fundraiser will run from February 8-22, and the pick-up date will be March 14 in the gym.

J. R. Robson School

The junior girls’ basketball team hosted a home tournament and got Silver. “It was a great tournament”, says the girls’ coach Miss Borysiuk, and the fan turnout was also impressive. On February 25 the girls will participate in Northerns at Marwayne in hopes of finishing in the top three to attend BTPS Finals the following weekend.

Our student crew, Long John Silver, is organizing a school dance on Thursday, February 23. Ticket sales will be $5 in advance and $10 at the door.

The Grade 11s and 12s will be going to the Citadel Theatre to watch a performance of “Peter and the Star Catcher”

on April 12. It is based off of the novel by Dave Berry and Ridley Pearson and is a comedic prequel to Peter Pan. Twelve actors are playing over 100 different characters in this performance!

Last weekend J. R. held a senior basketball home tournament. The event occupied five gymnasium spaces simultaneously and hosted 16 boys teams’ and 12 girls’ teams.

Last month J. R. Robson School hosted VIBE Day, a day of excitement, learning, and focus on mental wellness.

Over 400 junior high students from J. R. Robson, Mannville, St. Jerome’s, and Clandonald were in attendance along

with Grade 6 students from Vermilion Elementary School; they spent the day at our school attending a variety of sessions offered by community experts and organizations. As if that weren’t enough excitement and education, VIBE also provided snacks and lunch to everyone! Thanks to the VIBE Team, a team of hardworking, compassionate, and knowledgeable people, for putting together this big deal!

At our Februar y 8 assembly, we congratulated the following students who won in the Legion poster contest: Samara Hemauer, Hamdan Malik, Brydon Maxwell, Destinee McGrath, Ethan Nelson, and Kirsten Selte. Mrs. Heinrich and Mrs. Long discussed a Random Acts of Kindness project that will run in our school for a week and a half; we will have an explosion of kindness from paying it forward with RAK. Grade 5 students recited the poem “Sick”

by Shel Silverstein and then presented posters displaying our February virtue of Trustworthiness. Following the assembly, we held our winter walk inside (as it was below -25 degrees outside).

Last week was the jurisdiction’s first division wide Support Staff Collaborative Learning Day. On February 10, all school based support staff had the opportunity to get together at Wainwright High School for a day of learning and collaboration within their respective roles. This event was indicative of the cooperative efforts of the CUPE Local and the Board through its ongoing Staff Liaison Committee. Teachers gathered in Kitscoty at the elementary school and high school to have our TES Team Day, which was the third and final one for this school year.

The Me to We Club will be offering an exciting opportunity to create change on a global level. This month on February 14 and 15, students in the club will be collecting loonies to make a difference in the lives of others. One large coffee cup full of loonies is enough money to give six

With Christmas holidays and school holidays it’s been a while since the Roots of Empathy families have visited the grade two classes at V.E.S. They have both grown so much since December and the students were excited to weigh and measure them to see just how much. Baby Rian reached the milestone of sitting up by herself over the break. Everyone was thrilled when she demonstrated her new skill. Both Rian and Elle have started teething. While that can be tricky times for mom and dad, the grade twos are looking very forward to celebrating the first tooth milestone with them.

Learning To Curl With A Canadian Champion

Vermilion students received the chance to learn curling tips from the two-time Canadian Women’s Champion Heather Nedohin in a special ‘Learn to Curl’ clinic at the Vermilion Curling Club on February 9.

The County of Vermilion River Gas Utility and the Federation of Alberta Gas Co-ops teamed up with Heather Nedohin to bring a series of ‘Learn to Curl’ clinics to select rural Alberta Curling Clubs.

Nedohin instructed the ‘Learn to Curl’ school day clinic and an evening clinic for junior and adult curlers sharing advice and tips at the Vermilion Curling rink. “ We have over 60 students here today, and it is our largest turn out to date,” said Kevin Crush, Federation of Alber ta Gas Co-ops Manager of Communications.

Canadian Themed Curling Bonspiel

The Vermilion Combined Men’s and Ladies’ Bonspiel took place February 10-12.

The entry fee price was $200 per team and each team played 3 games. Activities were followed by a roast beef dinner. The theme for the Ladies’ side of the bonspiel was “Superstars Celebrate Canada’s Birthday.”

Teams dressed up for the banquet and curling, some wore red and white, while others wore their favourite Canadian superstar outfit!

“The theme was Canadian, so we chose to go with the fur hats,” said Kayla Roth.

30 Years In Martial Arts: Q & A With Morgan Freeman

When did you first start your Martial Arts journey?

I first started training on my 7th birthday in England, my twin brother and I had been begging our mum to let us train in Judo since as soon as we could talk!

Why did your start?

Martial arts is a family thing for me.

My Grandfather studied Judo and was a Black Belt instructor who had a school in a small town called Woking, England and he taught my aunts, uncles, mother and cousins judo, so we couldn’t wait to get started!

What styles have you tried?

I practiced Judo for 10 years, and came to the realisation that something was lacking for me; I needed more variety. Also, it was extremely political back in 80’s and 90’s which wasn’t for me either. After Judo I looked at Boxing, Tai Boxing, Kick Boxing, Wing Chun, & Aikido but these weren’t a good fit for me. The instructors just weren’t offering something I was looking for. I really enjoyed my Tai Chi experience; I was studying with 2 different instructors, with 2 difference focuses at the time. The first instructor was a Chinese gentleman called Tien Do-Ming.

He taught me his family style of Tai Chi and offered me the opportunity to learn Kung Fu in China, in his village with the village master. I was very tempted but I had just met my wife Emma, and decided that I wanted to be with her more! The second Tai Chi instructor was a world champion Tai Chi master called Ian Lansley. His focus was on the combative side of Tai Chi. I trained full contact, bare knuckle for two years with him.

How did you hear of Kuk Sool Won? I first heard of Kuk Sool Won whilst I was training in Tai Chi. My mom had mentioned it to me. She was receiving acupuncture treatment from a master that also had a school. I didn’t go check it out straight way because I was focused on

the full contact aspect of Tai Chi. I was at the gym one day, and was just looking to see if there was an Aikido school (I was going through a Steven Segal phase at the time), when I came across a Kuk Sool Won class about to start. I took advantage of the two free lessons offered.

Why did you stick at Kuk Sool?

The school instructor, Master Phillip Holmes, was holding a demonstration to celebrate the opening of a new school; and I got to see a world class demonstration from some of the top masters. The high points were watching Master Holmes demonstrating pressure points and palm strikes and Master ‘Doc’ Williams demonstrating fan, rope and cane techniques!

There were weapons demonstrations, board breaking, techniques, acrobatics and form, and it was amazing. I was hooked! The final nail in the coffin, which cemented my love for Kuk Sool Won, was when I competed in the 1998 European Championships; now don’t get excited, I didn’t win anything! After the tournament there is a Black Belt & Maters demonstration. Firstly, I was blown away by the number of black belts considering it was a style I had never heard of before.

Secondly, I got to see the grand master, Kuk Sa Nim Suh In Hyuk demonstrate the most incredible techniques I’d ever seen in my life!

Why did you come to Canada?

My wife (second degree black Belt Emma Freeman) and I were at a seminar in the UK hosted by Master Holmes and led by Master ‘Doc’ Williams. Master Doc mentioned that his school was holding its first ever demonstration in Calgary and I offered to help. During this trip we both fell in love with Canada and made a conscious decision to move here and expand Kuk Sool Won in Alberta. We spent the first two years finding our feet in Calgary before moving to Vermilion.

Kuk Sool Won after some friends from Calgary moved back to Mannville. We chose Vermilion as it seemed like a central hub for the local rural communities to visit and do activities. Also, our experiences in the UK showed us that Kuk Sool Won schools were more successful in rural communities than in big cities.

What have been your most significant events since moving to Vermilion?

We opened our school in town here, in September 2012 and in the 5five years we have been open, we have had 84 students and we shall be promoting our 1st black belt candidate this year! We’ve taught the outreach school in the past as well as teaching at J.R. for the last two years and have also been hosted by the Cadets. We’ve done various demonstrations and always have a table at the fall

sign up! However for us the most exciting thing to happen is that we are now on the Kuk Sool Won World seminar tour!

This means that a very senior master from the World headquarters comes to Alberta every year and hosts a two day seminar! The visiting instructor is 9th degree master Suh, Sung Jin who is the grand masters eldest son and is also a multiple World Champion martial artist in many different open competitions over the years.

What are your goals for the future?

I have two main goals. Firstly, I want to take our students to a World tournament so they can experience firsthand what I saw all those years ago. Secondly, I want to continue to expand and grow Kuk Sool Won. My dream would be to have a full time studio in Vermilion and teach on a full time basis.
