“It was the toughest year of my life, but the most fun!” said local rancher, Duncan MacMillan, who is the 2016 Canadian Overall Champion of the Canadian Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association (CCMSA). After suffering heart problems last winter, MacMillan had two stints put-in in January of 2016, but throughout the year was able to make a miraculous comeback and continue competing. “I made a full recovery and then some. I don’t know how long I’ll stay fixed, but I’m going to have fun while it’s working,” said MacMillan. Beginning the year as a Level 3 Shooter, MacMillan was able to acquire enough points to move up to the Level 4 Division. By the end of the year, he not only earned the spot of the Senior Men’s 4 Champion, but also Rifle Reserve Champion, Shotgun Champion, and Canadian Overall Champion. “It’s quite an honour at my age to take the Overall,” said MacMillan. With a new lease on life, and a shiny

new buckle, MacMillan has no plans on slowing down. On January 3, he will depart for Arizona with his wife, Jean. There they plan on attending some clinics and conditioning their horses for a month before taking in some of the major American shoots in February. He’s also in the process of starting a new horse, so he can continue to compete for a while. Also a force to be reckoned with, Jean is the 2016 Senior Ladies Level 3 Champion. “Jean is down to earth and enjoys the more grass roots parts of competing including the horses, travelling, and visiting with the other ladies in her division,” said MacMillan. Duncan thrives on high pressure situations which is perhaps why he does so well in competition. “The more lights, the more glory; I just get steadier when there is more pressure involved. Others tend to let their nerves get in the way,” said MacMillan. MacMillan shares a passion for family and ranching as well as competitive shooting.

“I love the extreme difference going from a quiet day feeding cows and stepping two days later into a high powered arena; I love both scenarios. It’s a commitment to keep the ranch running with 275 head of cattle and compete. As long as I am able do both, I’m going to continue doing both as long as I can,” said MacMillan.

The 21st Ron Moses, Christmas Community Dinner, took place at the Seniors’ Centre on Christmas Day. It is well - known that the dinner provides a place for people to gather who find themselves alone on Christmas Day as well as for people who have other events during the holiday season but not on Christmas Day itself. The event also offered delivery service to those who were unable to attend due to medical issues or employment obligations. Entertainment provided by members of the Brundage and Danaher families from Paradise Valley began at 12 p.m before the dinner which was scheduled for 1 p.m. The families sang Christmas carols, recited readings and gave some chuckles with a stand-up comedy act by Josiah Danaher. Emily Anderson completed two readings entitled ‘Two Birth Announcements’ and ‘Twas the Night Before Jesus Came’ and accompanied the Brundage/Danaher families playing the piano during the singing of carols. Julie Brundage from Paradise Valley had contacted Lynda Moses to see how they could volunteer their time for the dinner. “We were going to do deliveries, but Lynda called us and asked if we could help

Included in this year’s fare was Turkey, Elk, Ham, meatballs, and lots of vegetables, salads, and desserts, including a variety of foods and desserts that were gluten-free. The atmosphere was warm and inviting and captured the Christmas spirit perfectly.

Quik Pick Waste Disposal-Blue Wave Recycling has been contracted to provide the collection and processing of the recyclables. The Price family gathered in Vermilion for a Reunion on December 29, connecting with one another and their ancestors who had moved here in 1906. Clairville and Tanjore Price moved from New Brunswick to Vermilion in 1906, acquiring a homestead that kept them here for 25 years. The farm was then sold to the George Haines family who were good friends of the Price’s as they had come west with them from New Brunswick.

Headstone Mystery

Brock Price (son of Tanjore) was the last family member that had lived in Vermilion, although they are distant relatives of Bernie Huedepohl. At one time, George Price had contacted the Vermilion Heritage Museum and was told that Mary Ann Price (nee MacKenzie) had been buried in one of the local graveyards. The mysterious part of the story is that he was also told that a headstone for Mary Ann Price, (George Price’s greatgreat grandmother) had been found in a local barn. “Travelling from Vancouver Island, Brit-

Happy New Year Everyone

Well, Christmas day has come and past, and now we are working our way into the New Year. Looking back on this last year so many things have changed. First, I would like to remember two very special people of the Vermilion Voice team; Franklin Wolters and Chris Thomas, not a day goes by that you are not thought of with the finest of memories, we miss you very much! Our little town has lost a couple of businesses over the last year but even with the downturn it has grown with the opening of some businesses as well, maybe we are on the track of recovery, and our town will continue to grow. Even though our town has grown in some aspects, we need to remember that many families have lost their form of employment, and I am truly hoping that 2017 will be a better year for all of them, with new oppor-

tunities or hopefully the oil prices swinging back around. I really do hope that life becomes better for you. Remember to help in any way you can by donating to the food bank; it’s a great service for the people of our community who require their service. Our paper has been affected by the crappy economy, but we are still in the game and won’t let this slow time beat us. We have completed a lot of brainstorming over the last year and continue to improve by leaps and bounds providing you with a well designed and informative newspaper each week. Not to sound boastful but it is great to hear comments from readers who repeatedly inform us that our newspaper is the best in the area even compared to the bigger newspapers in Lloydminster. It’s an amazing feeling when members of the Lloydminster and Wainwright communities are standing in the lobby of the establishments we deliver our paper to, waiting for us to unpackage our paper each week. It is with our greatest appreciation that we would like to thank everyone who has stood by us and supported us during this

slow time. Without you, our paper could never be what it is today. We would like to thank our columnists who are so diligent about sending in their weekly columns we appreciate your hard work and dedication more than you may know. We appreciate the submissions we get from the schools that help keep us all up to date; we know you are all busy but still take the time to send it in. And, of co urse, our advertisers without your continued support our paper would not be here. A New Year often re pre se nt s a fre s h start. For some it can mean New Year’s resolutions, for others it can be a time to make plans and set goals. We may be working on our careers, our surroundings or our selves. During the holidays our celebration of Christmas cumulates in the message of love and forgiveness. Starting a new year off by examining our hearts and choosing to forgive those that have wronged us, can help give us a fresh and healthy start for the

upcoming year. We may have to forgive ourselves for harboring and practicing un-forgiveness. Often we are working through forgiveness with people that have no intention of saying they are sorry or being part of the process. They don’t care. John Amodeo, PhD, psychotherapist and author says that when we have been hurt or wounded by another person there are three possible outcomes: 1) They do not apologize because they truly do not care; living a shame based life has cut off their own feelings of pain and therefore they do not register other people’s pain, this includes mild to major sociopath tendencies.

formation of like minded clicks. Unfortunately this type of person can be found in work organizations, community groups, sports teams, churches, families, marriages and trolling the internet. They wreak havoc where ever they choose. They don’t say “sorry” and they don’t make amends, because their false sense of superior intelligence allows them to treat people that don’t serve their needs, disrespectfully, without remorse. The never recognize the pain, suffering and discord they cause. What they really need is counselling, but until that happens, the people around them will have to learn the art of forgiveness, for the benefit of their own health. Forgiveness is about making you and your life significant and the wrong doer and their actions insignificant. My dad would always say of unkind people’s actions and words “let it be like water off a duck’s back”. Somewhere in life I learned that how people treat me is more about who they are than who I am. I also learned that how I treat people is really about who I am, as a person. I once had to deal regularly with a grumpy man that would come into my shop, and felt the need to project his unhappiness onto me. It often left me feeling inadequate in establishing even the most basic friendly customer service relationship. One day he came in and did his typical grumpy and unsatisfied performance, and after he left, one of my older staff members belly laughed out loud at him, and his negative attitude, repeating some of his words and then laughing even more. In awe of her lighthearted mood, infectious laugh and fresh perspective, I was instantly cured of the impact of his sullen moods forever, for I could clearly see that nothing I could say or do would improve the outcome. You could say, I became the duck that day, a very happy and forgiving water proof duck.

2) They are driven by their ego or image and the best they can do is to offer a lame apology such as “I’m sorry you feel that way” putting off their bad behavior as your problem. 3) The psychologically healthy person feels bad about the hurt they have caused someone and expresses their sorrow to the injured in a sincere apology. This can bring about true healing and reconciliation. The road to forgiveness can be quick and easy or it can be complicated, with switchbacks, downhill descents and difficult uphill climbs. It is an important journey for our health. Studies link un-forgiveness to an increase in health problems. Some people are unwilling to forgive because of a lack of a sincere apology, or fearing that the person that inflected the pain gets away scot free. For those that like to hang on, forgiveness can be the slow acceptance of an undesired reality or unkindness in an individual. As long as a person holds un-forgiveness, they remain emotionally tied to the situation in an unhealthy way. However forgiveness is not about letting what was done be alright or forgotten. Forgiveness is about letting go of any root of bitterness, for our own health and happiness, for our benefit, not theirs. It’s taking back our life and being free. We have all been hurt by others and may, unknowingly have hurt others. We are human and we all make mistakes. We have all experienced being with people that are very nice or with people that are unkind. Friendly, kind, loving and forgiving people are a joy to be around. It is the judgemental, jealous, critical, negatively opinionated and unforgiving that love to stir the pot of discontent. Their insecurities and need for control contribute to their bullying, mean spirited comments, one up-man-ship, anger, snarky e-mails, belittling behaviors and the

If there has been one thing that signified the greatest division of my life experience from the lives of my parents and grandparents was compute r s . Yo u c o u l d argue that many of the daily things my parents grew up with had changed little from what their grandparents had experienced…other than the onset of machinery from the Industrial Revolution. You could go hundreds of years back in your family tree and see little difference in how they lived, so it is not hard for me to understand now how much change was brought to my parents when things like cars, tractors, threshing machines, indoor plumbing and heating, and electricity arrived on the scene for them. Life changing…

Many things we do for our children are simply over-the-top, fulfilling “wants” that are, in my opinion, out of control. My grandmother used to get an orange in the toe of her stocking (same as we do today!) but it was the only orange they would get all winter. My mom said that she was told, they used to eat the peel as well as the actual fruit. This orange was a “want,” They were dirt poor, but they could have gotten along just fine without that treat, which meant they had a true and deep appreciation for it. Their attitudes back then

2017 may be a year you are looking forward to, in offering a new beginning, a hope, a healing as 2016 may have been a year of trauma, heartbreak, and change caused by a loss in your life and you seek healing and peace once again. We often hear the terms “be strong” or “you are so strong,” offered to those who grieve. These terms are so often used to comfort in the time of great change in lives due to loss and the death of someone loved. These terms are meant well and intend to support. How else do we comfort, except with kind words? Do we really comfort with these words, or do we set the grieving up to appear strong and to put on the strong mask, when indeed they are crumbling under the weight of loss and just want to honestly be weak and to find someone willing to companion them in this dark, painful time? As a caring community are we willing to invest in, companion or are we uncomfortable investing in someone’s grief journey and feel words will be enough? A challenge for 2017 - For those who comfort, take a step back - Are

as my first computer was for me. My Universe had changed. Not sure where my first exposure to a computer happened and it seems funny now admitting that. For Christmas one year in about 1977 us kids got a ridiculously simple Sears video game ‘console’ with paddles that could play ‘PONG’ tennis and hockey and a race car game that the cars came down the screen. Not sure what happened to it…died inevitably I’m sure… but by 1980 the first idea of computer technology had taken bite in our home. Dad used to subscribe to ‘Popular Science’ for us, and reading that every month I suppose is where my I developed a keen interest in technology. To be fair it probably start with that first ‘Pong’ game hooked to our black and white console TV, but by 1983 I had saved and worked to get funds for my first VIC-20 Computer. $300…sure it had rudimentary games too but that first 5K of RAM memory, that seems completely laughable now, had me exposed to logic and BASIC for the first time. Apple IIe’s and computer classes appeared in our school by the next year and I had already begun to learn programming from magazines. It seems a bit fascinating now how

few really took to computers and how many didn’t considering how eagerly prior technologies were greeted. It cer tainly didn’t cultivate the greatest stereotype having an interest in computers…geeks with glasses and pocket protectors. The ones who don’t take to tablets and computers now are the social outcasts…anyway the juxtaposition since then makes me laugh. You had to tune out the sentiments of your peers at the time quite honestly. Computers weren’t user friendly to be sure so it deterred all the casual ‘users’. I thought I was a bit of a trailblazer….and worked out pretty well in hindsight. My interest in ‘retro tech’ has never really left…and I suppose it is much l i ke D ad ’s fa s c i n at i o n fo r v i s i t i n g Pioneer Days at Irricana and seeing an Old Rumely tractor chugging along. It comes down to capturing those indelible childhood memories to be sure… not an uncommon human trait. This summer I managed to resurrect my first old Commodore VIC-20 and used it to retrieve one of the very first graphic programs I had written myself over 30 years ago, stored on a simple audio cassette tape. Crazy really…that all those micro-

scopic magnetically aligned bits coated on a flimsy tape still can line up and be read after all that time. Obsolete…but not dead apparently, like the 14 other computers in various ages and stages in my house. I know, don’t get me started…I use a spreadsheet to keep track. The latest has 1,677,722 times more memor y than the first....I wish gas mileage improved at the same rate. What concerns me a little bit was that I may have been a better programmer at 15 than I am now. So when you look at your teenager, spending what seems to be excessive time on their tablet or game console, playing ‘Minecraft’ or whatever goes for the ‘meme’ of the day…temper that with the fact they may get an education and in 10 years be the next architectural designer or programmer of a critical computer system. M y p a r e n t s n eve r r e a l l y u n d e rstood why I was glued to that screen so long playing games and entering programs…but they let me do it. They saw something…and you just never know. Happy New Year and I hope your 2017 is the start of something bright and new.

I’ve been hearing so many sad stories of people in hard times, and while I feel for those unemployed or underemployed, in the back of my mind, I also wonder about the personal decisions we all make every day. When did each spouse having a cell phone become a “need”? It wasn’t long ago that interest rates were at 18 percent. What would my generation (X) say, if that were to happen now? (A bunch of whining I’d assume!) We need to be more thoughtful when we are handling our household finances! Have you ever heard the saying “It’s not how much you make, its how much you KEEP”? Of course, it’s not until your furnace breaks down that you begin to rethink taking that flight last spring,

of buying that new toy you really didn’t need! A family I know ran space heaters for all of September and most of October...and finally bought a furnace on their credit card. This $4000 purchase was a non-negotiable “need”, and they had no way to pay the bill in full! Hearing about this is heart wrenching for me, and embarrassing for them I’m sure! While I’m grateful there are social programs out there to help in these times (the family received $2400 just by simply asking a government-sponsored agency), I also worry that we are losing the skill of being responsible for ourselves. When did we stop thinking ahead? Dave Ramsey has a show on TV giving out financial advice, and he recommends having three months of bills in the savings account. This safety net will help you in a pinch, so you don’t need to ask for help from anyone. That seems to be the issue: People don’t mind

NetScience Goaltending Camp

Young goalies pull out all the stops at the NetScience Goaltending Camp held at the Centennial Civic Centre in Lloydminster on December 28 - 30 and January 4 - 6. “NetScience was formed with one overarching fundamental truth in mind: The most important concept of playing sports, any sport, is having fun. It matters not if a child is a goaltender, a forward, defender, or a participant in tennis or golf, the main reason a child (or any of us), play and compete is to enjoy themselves. Add making friends and the thrill of growing confidence through developing skills they’ve yet to master in a sport, and you create a perfect storm of positivity and wellbeing,” said NetScience Master Instructor Steven Larry. Goalies were also encouraged to create their own personal pre-game rituals including racquetball drills, hip and groin mobility, as well as full body warm ups. With three hours of ice time per camp, goalies developed their goalie-specific power skating as well as their technical and tactical training with shooters. The ice time included between 100 - 200 reps of skating skills each session, 100 - 200 shots while in the net, and additional practice or puck handling outside of the net. “NetScience believes that it is a fundamental truth that at the start of any goalies’ career, coaches must train goalies to be proficient skaters by training them to remain in ‘Goalie Mode’ doing repetitions of skating skills at their individual speed and their skill level. Learning to maneuver properly early in their playing career is a huge advantage for any young goaltender to have, and sets them on the road to becoming elite,” said Larry. Video was taken at both end zone stations for review with coaches, before the following ice session. The video gave goaltenders the opportunity to watch and critique their own play; an advantage that they wouldn’t normally have. “Viewing their positioning as the shooter sees it helped to effect positive change as well as encouraged goalies to perform their best during drills, knowing their play and work habits were open for discussion with

Ethan Iverson from North Battleford attended the camp in hopes of learning new things, improving old techniques, and having fun. “Watching the coaches work on a personal level with the children during this camp was a pleasure. They took the time to work one on one with each child out there, and Ethan said he enjoyed it all! I would definitely recommend this camp to others,” said Ethan’s mother, Sandra Iverson.

It ’s been a long time waiting, but yearbooks have finally arrived for the 2015 -2016 school year! There is a strong crew of junior and senior high students who are already meeting every Thursday to construct the new one--another collection of 68 full-color pages including class photos, events, teams, festivities, and faces.

Congratulations to Hannah Stewart for winning VIBE’s Pink T-Shirt design contest! Her creative digital drawing will be converted into hundreds of t-shirts and hoodies for the upcoming day. Aside from earning bragging rights, Hannah also received $100. On the last day before the holiday break, the annual pancake breakfast was held for all students as well as community members. Staff, members

of Rotar y, and school Trustee Jim King were the cooking crew, serving crew, and cleanup crew. Food preparation began at 6:45am and continued while students poured into the school. Classes resumed for half of the day, and then later in the afternoon ended when movies, karaoke, cookie decorating, candy cane contests, and the Search for Santa spread the Christmas cheer.
