17th Annual Westman Bred Heifer Sale

Approximately 525 head of Westman Simi-Angus Cross bred heifers were auctioned during their 17th Annual Bred Heifer Sale at North Central Livestock on December 5.

“These are quality cattle that have a g o o d tem perament,” said Derek Westman, who helps operate a fourth g e n e r a t i o n f a r m a l o n g w i t h Ky l e, Murray, and Doug Westman and their families.

The Westman’s have had success showing c at tle the last num ber of years. For five of the last six years,

they have won Grand Championship titles for their commercial cattle pen of bred heifers at the Western Canadian Agribition in Regina. They have also had much success at Farm Fair International.

“We do it because we love it,” said Westman.

The Westman’s have sold cattle to buyers from British Columbia all the way to Quebec. On December 5, their bred heifers averaged $2,425.

“We’d like to thank all of our buyers and bidders throughout the past years for su p p or t in g our pro gr am,” s ai d A display of Grand Champion banners that the Westman family has received at the Western Canadian Agribition in Regina.

Vermilion’s Shereen Cameron (nee Ziegler) received the Canadian Cowgirl Achievement Award on November 12, at the Miss Rodeo Canada Alumni Brunch in Edmonton.

The Alumni hosted the 3 rd Annual Brunch at the Chateau Lacombe Hotel in collaboration with the Miss Rodeo Canada (MRC) Pageant and the Canadian Finals Rodeo (CFR).

Lloydminster’s rising star, Sam Lundell performed his song ‘Everything’ at the brunch; with the lyrics prioritizing a woman, and highlighting that she is beautiful, strong, independent, and not materialistic.

Raised near Vegreville, Cameron’s father showed horses, and he and her grandfather influenced her love of horses.

Her passion was fueled during Grade 10, when after four years of asking, she received a barrel horse. She spent the following summers working for Gordon Holt at Bar Heart Ranch and a few weeks with Bruce and Tammy Etherington.

“It was these people along with their

families that made it my life. I learned a lot from them,” said Cameron.

With experience from 4-H public speaking, Cameron won Miss Rodeo Wainwright in 2000, with the prize being a saddle that she needed.

“It doesn’t have to be something you accomplish as a three-year-old,” said Cameron encouraging those eager to learn a new sport.

From there, she was sponsored to the CFR Miss Rodeo Pageant.

“It was definitely a thrill,” said Cameron.

As Miss Rodeo Canada 2002, a Miss Rodeo Canada Board Member for five years, past President and current Treasurer of the MRC Alumni Board, Cameron was a suitable candidate for the Canadian Cowgirl Achievement Award.

“Shereen is a wonderful lady who has spent the last number of years as a liaison between the MRC Board and the Alumnus. She has been involved in a lot of fundraising and has a lot of history and knowledge,” said MRC President Pauline Briggs.

Cameron said that in earlier years, the Alumni hadn’t been grouped together;

now they are. She worked on getting them to be a registered non-profit organization.

Dating back to 1955, there are now 53 women Alumni members who all have a place even though their year is complete.

As well as providing support for one another, they also support new and future members. Each year, they sponsor the outgoing Alumni Canada Rodeo ring, a $500 bursary for the runner-up in the pageant, and put on a queen clinic which prepares young women for ambassador positions, rodeo queen, and Miss Rodeo pageants.

Having to attend 400 -500 events throughout the year the current MRC and Lakeland College Alumni, Ali Mullen is already representing Rodeo Canada in Las Vegas at the National Finals Rodeo.

“Having the MRC Alumni operating as a group is really a mighty thing. I’m mostly humbled that I was awarded,” said Cameron who was aware of the high profile in the rodeo world of the other nominees; Dee Butterfield and Renne Reidy Cameron now resides near Vermilion with her husband Troy and two children.

Beginning January 2017 the Town of Vermilion will be using a Blue Bag Recycling Program for single family dwellings and duplexes. Quik Pick Waste Disposal-Blue Wave Recycling has been contracted to provide the collection and processing of the recyclables. The Blue Bag recyclables will be collected every second week on Wednesdays and Thursdays. See website for the schedule.

On your designated collection day simply set your Blue Bag out on the front yard curb. Large pieces of cardboard can be flattened and placed underneath your Blue Bag. Always place your Blue Bag one metre from other objects. In the winter months do not place your Blue Bag on snowbanks or ice covered surfaces.

Western Financial Donation To J.R. Robson Learning Commons

Vermilion’s Western Financial Group donated a cheque for $1,058.40 to J.R. Robson High School on December 8.

The monies that Western Financial Group raises through the ‘Support the Cause’ campaign in May goes into the Western Communities Foundation. The Western Communities Foundation in turn puts the money back into our community.

In 2016, Vermilion was funded: A $750 bursary that was awarded to a Vermilion student who attends post secondary education.

A $5,000 infrastructure grant towards the Town of Vermilion for upgrades to the ball diamond dugouts.

A $2,117.40 donation towards St. Jerome’s Hot Lunch Program.

The $1,058.40 donation toward J.R. Robson’s Learning Commons upgrade.

“This Western Financial Office has a long history of giving back to the community. We appreciate the support of our clients and friends in helping us to benefit the community in which we all live,” said Western Financial Manager Darrin Sinclair.

“The furniture that we were able to

purchase with the funds from Western Financial is plush single seating that can be easily moved for students to either work independently or within groups,” said J.R. Robson Vice Principal, Kelly Scully.

The furniture finishes off J.R. Robson’s new Learning Commons area which they have been working hard to complete over the past year. The Learning Commons is a place for students to access resources, collaborate, and create. This area has paper resources, both fiction and nonfiction, and digital resources for students to access. Students have been using the

special whiteboard tables and interactive televisions as a way to build and share their learning in collaborative groups. As well, students are exposed to experts around the world using the video conferencing technology to interact with and ask questions of these experts. Students have many opportunities to create in this area as well. They have access to 3D printers to make their creations and prototypes become a reality, and a wide range of audio-visual technology they can use to express their learning.

Delaney Saunders Gives Back

Fifteen-year-old Marwayne resident Delaney Saunders is a cancer survivor who was diagnosed at nine years of age, and started her fundraising for the Ronald McDonald House Charity (RMHNAC) while undergoing treatment. Saunders spent a great deal of time at the Ronald McDonald House in Edmonton and said it was her wish to give back.

“I was inspired to help after I spent time at the Ronald McDonald House, it was like a second home to me. I also really liked baking, and I thought it would be a good way to give back,” said Saunders.

At a g e 15 , S a u n d e r s b a ke s hundreds of buns, cookies and cinnamon buns for trade shows and then donates all of the proceeds of the sales to RMHNAC. Saund er s sur passed her goal of raising $10,000, but still

continues to donate her time baking and fundraising for the RMHCAC in Edmonton.

The Ronald McDonald House is a place of comfort and compassion for all families with ill and injured children. While the families who stay at RMHCNA come from outside Edmonton, the House also helps families from Edmonton through the Day Pass Program, where families have access to all House programming.

All Ronald McDonald Houses are independently owned and operated non-profit organizations. The Ronald McDonald House is the only facility in Edmonton and the surrounding area that provide temporary and affordable accommodations for families whose children are being treated in one of Edmonton’s medical facilities.

“I think what she is doing is amazing after everything she has been through.

She has a heart of gold and puts in a

lot of time baking for trade shows,” said Delaney ’s Grandmother, Pat Fox. “Af ter been shown suc h ad versity at such a young age and to turn a r o u n d a n d m a ke s o m e t h i n g s o good from it, makes my mom’s heart proud,” said Delaney’s mother, Leasa Saunders.

“I know when people ask her how much she gives and she replies “all of it ” they are of ten shocked. We are extremely thankful to have the community support that we do. Everyone in our town and the widespread s ur r o u n d i n g ar e a h a s s u p p o r te d Delaney and our entire family since the date of her diagnosis, and we are just so proud to call this community home. Cholowski estimates that the Vermilion Gun Club draws members from a 75 km radius. He went on to say that having the practice enabled him to harvest the animal safely and humanely.

“I’m always hoping to see a big one; this year it seemed to work out. Having the top score is certainly an honour, and it is nice to end the season on a high note,” said Cholowski.

“The Vermilion Gun Club would like to thank ever yone who entered the contest and all of our sponsors,” said coordinator George Gerski.

Winter Is Here

W h i l e w e h ave been blessed with an unusual winter thus far, with ver y lit tle snow, it was inevitable that winter would eventually strike us, and as always it happens when you least expect it. I was not ready for the deep freeze we have been tossed into, and I don’t like it one bit. If I didn’t have to come to work each day, I think I would begin my hibernation for the next three to four months.

It’s no secret that I despise everything about winter. The only thing that makes me look forward to it all is the Christmas season, and in my opinion, that does not last long enough. If I had the option, I would be on a plane to a nice sunny, tropical destination for the entire winter season. However, I don’t

have that choice, so I am stuck here to brave the great Canadian winter like a true Canadian. I will stick it out and try not to complain too much like a little child.

A couple of weeks back, I wrote my editorial about the mitten, hat, scarf tree we were planning for the first two weeks of December. I was unsure of the response we would get; but it has been amazing!

We have received gloves, mittens, h at s, n e c k war m er s, s c ar ve s a n d even some socks for our tree and it is overflowing with your generosity and warmth! The tree is even starting to tilt slightly with the weight from all the items.

It truly touches my hear t how our c ommunit y/c ommunities c ome together in times of hardship. With your donations, some of the children in our community, as well as Mannville, will have toasty heads, necks, hands,

and even feet which is a good thing now that this horrible cold weather has struck us.

L o o k i n g a t o u r m a r ve l o u s t r e e carries my thoughts back to how our communities supplied thousands of dollars wor th of products to be shipped out to the people of Fort Mac. Even though our towns have been af fected by the tremendously slow economy, you still find a way to give; I can’t say it enough “Thank You!” We will be distributing the items to the schools this week.

So, I guess whether you love winter or hate it we have no choice in whether it comes or not, unfortunately. We just need to be prepared for the longer, darker, colder days, brave it with as much dignity as we can and do everything possible to make it safe. Stay warm out there because it seems like this yuck is here to stay for the next couple weeks.

to be intoxicated and breaching several conditions previously imposed on him. The male was advised of his arrest but resisted officers. The male was eventually brought under control but managed to kick one of the officers in the head. The male was subsequently charged with various offences and remains in custody.

Vermilion RCMP responded to a complaint of a stolen vehicle that had been seen driving in the Town of Vermilion. Members located the vehicle, however, the vehicle took off and members lost sight of the vehicle. Members later located the vehicle at a residence and made contact with the suspect, Randy Ryan (20). Ryan

attempted to evade police by jumping from the second story window of a residence, but was caught and taken into custody after a struggle with police. Ryan has been charged with various offences and remains in custody.

Vermilion RCMP responded to a complaint of a domestic dispute. Members attended the scene and learned the suspect had fled the area on foot. After an investigation, various charges were laid against a 27 year old male and a warrant issued for his arrest. The male was subsequently arrested on his outstanding warrants by a neighbouring detachment. The male remains in custody.

I am grateful to learn something new every day of my life, I wasn’t so happy this week as I learned that I am not getting or learning how to “acclimatize”… the cold spell hit me hard.

I suppose I can share the blame with Old Man Winter for slacking off in November, which was very mild compared to most Novembers. Now that December is here so is the colder stuff.

It is not so much the cold as it is maybe I am just getting older and feel it that much more. Recently on one of my adventures I badly bruised or even cracked a rib, which at the time didn’t feel like a big deal. I had to think and recall walking into a small wrist size popular tree that had the top broken off, and leaning right about chest height, of course being accident prone I couldn’t pass that up!

The tree, most likely broken off by a moose feeding high on tender poplar limbs, was bent perfect so I didn’t see it, ironically I was retrieving a mule buck that the wife and I harvested on an adventure together.

Although I didn’t pay much mind to it other than “owww” and a few cuss words, it appeared that I did little damage until it got to a point where I couldn’t lift my arm or needed to sit down if I wanted to cough or god forbid…sneeze. Seeking medical advice I found unless it was a compound fracture of a rib not much can be done other than time to heal, so pain killer medicine and taking it easy was the prescribe, I passed on the pain killers.

Christmas is entertaining season, and we often need a little something special to take to a work event or a get together with friends or family. Even though there are so many elegant canapés and hordeurvre that one can make, I often find that my tight time line, makes such cuisine time prohibitive.

Sometimes a little extra creativity on an old favorite is the way to go. After some cruising on pinterest for ideas for an upcoming cocktail party, I came across the idea of turning the classic cheese ball into a Christmas tree shape and substitute the walnuts it is traditionally rolled in for finely chopped parsley. The”tree” decorations are small bit of chopped red pepper. It looks like such a great idea that is sure to gather interest and attention at the party. Cheese balls can also be turned into a snowman, by stacking two cheese balls and decking out the cheese balls with raisin or black olive eyes,

prescribe also, my “take it easy” must be different than most, as on the past weekend with hunting season over, it was puppy time and keeping firewood stocked up.

Now our firewood stock was critical as I got quite busy with hunting season, some say why don’t I prepare in summer or fall when it’s nice, tried that many years ago. It appears that wasps and fire ants like to live in prime firewood trees, and takes offence to their summer homes being crashed to the ground; besides its always too dang hot, all the issues are solved in winter, as its cool and the insects retire to underground homes. Also it gives me a winter activity, fresh air and exercise, usually a good workout without overheating, a good outing with the puppy which makes it a real adventure.

Now being near out of firewood and long range forecast calling for “freezing your butt off temperatures” there was no question Miss Oohohh and I were going to get firewood this weekend. With little snow we could get anywhere for prime firewood, and a neighbour wanted a stand of standing dead trees removed, so it was perfect, recent training for Miss Oohohh for the dog sled makes her not so a follower. So If I point her in a general direction she will take lead and head out, even if I am in the pickup off road, and that’s just what we did. She eagerly ran for miles; I simply followed her and looked for good firewood.

Pulling the chainsaw to start it was in itself I quickly found was a challenge due to that rib, but I did manage to get it started and felled a good bit of standing dead trees, which were all cut into logs about twice as long as my truck box bed.

I stopped for a break before cutting into fireplace size logs, I joined Miss Oohohh

whose nose was in overdrive, just in the small bush we were in there was a library of tracks. One wouldn’t think there would be much here looking at the long narrow bush that one could see throughout the other side, but this little place was teaming with wildlife. Moose, deer, rabbits, Hungarian partridge, weasel and many birds all left tracks and stories in the small amount of snow; miss Oohohh and I spent an hour reading in that library. Stopping for the break may have been a mistake as now I couldn’t even pull the cord to start the chainsaw, so I just loaded the long logs whole into the truck. Which I have to say might have been easier without the 90 lb puppy latched on the other end and deciding the log should be further in the bush than in the truck.

But after a little compromising with my assistant we finally got the truck heaping full with full size logs, with the command “on home” we were soon on the way home with Miss Oohohh in the lead across the fields.

My wife Roxanne knew I was hurting so she helped me unload into a pile ready to cut into fireplace pieces, but I knew I couldn’t start the chainsaw, but I wanted more straw for Miss Oohohh’s condo. Besides straw is light right, so I grabbed a pitch fork and we were off, another neighbour had a few big round straw bales that didn’t work out in the baler and were just more less a hay stack of straw. So with permission we would retrieve a truckload of fresh soft straw, I also learned that straw is heavier than one thinks with a cracked rib, but we filled the truck once again. We filled the large two room dog house half full of straw and once Miss Oohohh was making a nest the whole time and was happy, we shared the rest to top up the farm kitty’s houses.

As the sun set to the west we finished up and both went indoors to enjoy the last of the firewood in the fireplace, we would cut the logs into fireplace pieces in the morning and “just take it easy” “Let me in the house its cold” said no Alaskan malamute ever, however she is my fur baby so I found an old wool blanket doubled it up and placed it over the door way of her doghouse.

I staggered two full length cuts down for her to enter, of course I had to crawl in her doghouse to show her how it’s done, even with the two of us in there I had to admit it was very comfortable. Her condo was warm and wind proof. It got down to minus -30 C with wind-chill, and concerned I tried to bring her into the house, but she made it clear she was happy to play outside.

Alaskan Malamutes can amazingly sleep on the ice in Minus -70 C with a 50 km wind in the high arctic and still maintain constant body temperature without risk of frostbite; when I had my dog teams I used to worry about them. In minus -30 C weather I would bring out fresh straw fill their houses and nail wool blankets over the doors, the next day visiting the team they would be sleeping on top of the dog house, with the blanket ripped off and all the straw kicked out of the dog house.

When The Smoke Clears In a white out snow storm, a voice doesn’t travel well so I bought a dog whistle…but it doesn’t work that well…she never uses it!

Cream Cheese Pinwheels

a small carrot nose. The arms can be pretzels, green onions, sliced celery or spears of asparagus. A cute scarf is made out of a green onion top or a slice of a fruit roll up.

Another easy but showy favorite is pinwheels from tortilla wraps, with a flavoured cream cheese filling, spread on the wrap. The wrap is then rolled and cut into 1” segments. A really festive look is to have the cream cheese softened and stir in the seasoning and some finely chopped red pepper and chopped green onions. You can now also buy red tomato or green spinach tortillas for even more holiday style.

Cream cheese is handy for many entertaining recipes. You can spread it on a cracker and then add a topping of red pepper jelly, or three slices of black or green olive, or a small slice of tomato, with salt and pepper. You can top the cream cheese spread cracker with a small amount of lemon zest, a cooked and chilled shrimp that is deveined with the tail removed. A bit of smoked salmon is also an elegant and easy topping. Here are a few of my favorite entertaining recipes.

Bacon Cheese Ball 1 package of cream cheese at room temperature 1 1/2 cups grated sharp or aged ched dar cheese 6 slices of bacon 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 1/4 teaspoon hot pepper sauce like Franks Red Hot 1 teaspoon onion powder 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or chopped parsley Cook the bacon until crisp. An easy no fuss way to cook the bacon is to cover a cookie sheet with tin foil, place the strips on the foil and bake at 400 degrees until crispy.

When the bacon is cooked and slightly cooled chop it into small pieces. Combine the softened cream cheese, the graded cheddar cheese, the chopped bacon, the Worcestershire sauce, the pepper sauce, the onion powder and the salt. Mix until all the ingredients are well distributed.

Form the mass into a ball with your hands.

Spread the walnuts or chopped parsley on a cutting board, and roll the ball in the nuts.

For a Christmas tree, you could just toss and pat the chopped parsley onto the cone tree form. This can be wrapped in plastic wrap and stored in the refrigerator. It can be used right away or even popped into the oven, in an oven safe dish, to serve warm and soft.

Cream Cheese Pinwheel Filling 1 package of cream cheese at room temperature I cup sour cream 1 1/2 cups grated sharp or aged ched dar cheese 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 1/4 teaspoon hot pepper sauce like Franks Red Hot 1 teaspoon onion powder 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 cup chopped red pepper or dried cranberries 1/2 cup chopped green onion 1/2 cup chopped black or green olives Salt and pepper to taste.

Combine all the ingredients, and then spread on 5 10“ tortilla wraps. Roll up and cut into 1” pieces.

Having a sense of physical topography at one time was a valuable trait, certainly for a pioneer.

Being able to look at and pick the right quarter of land gave a homesteader the best chance at survival in what were sure to be, at first, harsh conditions. Say December in central Alberta.

My forebears were not scared of the unknown, obviously, or were driven by necessity and chance at a better future because they must have had

that ‘sense.’ Being in the initial wave of settlers to the area, they picked their bit of land with rich nearby soil, game, water, and the vista of the confluence of the Battle and Grizzly Bear valleys to the south. A good view was desirable as much then as now. I exist, after all, 100 years later, with many relatives who also bear witness to fortunate choices. Not the only one around here who can say that to be sure.

Hunting, especially on foot, can bring you closer to an acquaintance with that skill. Take notice where game travel and you discover that they have innate skill on terrain, their worn trails leaving a permanent story they are very conscious both about where food is plentiful and remaining unseen to stay alive.

That sense of ground can also be pivotal for other reasons: a great general can use key pieces of terrain to their advantage. Think Duke of Wellington at Waterloo, for example, a truly pivotal battle that changed the course of history with one decision on picking ground.

Wellington’s use of the reverse slope was something he relied on, even against a military genius like Napoleon: masking true intention the goal. It came down to literally not having the knowledge of what was behind a hill - a misinterpreted retreat and the forming of squares behind that crest at Mont-Saint-Jean doomed Napoleon’s cavalry, who didn’t have Google Map on a cell phone or a drone to tell them, and so ended the Napoleonic Age. That state of the unknown affects us daily still, metaphorically speaking.

Many of us spend our lives climbing a hill of knowledge to specialize in skills which take us to ‘the other side’ from others. They may have an idea of what you do, but don’t really understand because they never get to see your side the way you do, for one reason or another.

And so it is that many of us move daily in our own little knowledge silos, not really knowing what the people right beside us actually do.

Time too can prevent us from seeing both sides of the hill…as much as we

tell stories it usually does not make the divide between the past and the present perfectly clear: some things will always remain hidden. I’m sure my grasp of preparing a team of horses for travel to town will remain the same as Dad’s grasp of my ease with computers. Both skills each would use for a time every day but never shared.

I’ve never grown comfortable with the feeling that I wasn’t going to know about something though.

Or anything, really. I suppose there are some things that will always remain hidden…mainly because we don’t have the lifespan or interest to acquire it all.

Just the available human knowledge accumulating on the Internet is beyond the comprehension of the lifetimes to see even once. It hasn’t stopped me, though… recently finished a book on Waterloo and suffer a continuing addiction to surfing ‘down the rabbit hole’ on Wikipedia.

I never got cured from reading encyclopedias as a youth, apparently.

Reverse slope indeed.

And A Kitchen Sink In A Spruce Tree

“And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music.” Friedrich Nietzsche To the untrained eye, it may look like I picked up a bunch of random objects just laying around my yard, and hurled them haphazardly at the imposing Blue Spruce tree situated beside my house.

Comments such as.“What’s that chandelier doing in the tree?” or “What does a croquet mallet have to do with Christmas?” flush out some of these untrained die-hard Christmas Decorating 101 types.

An out of the box thinker will recognize them immediately for what they are - a stroke of Christmas decorating genius.

Originally, I had no intention of hanging life-sized everyday objects on the tree when I headed out to decorate. At first, I just wanted to create an indoor Christmas scene outdoors.

I brought out a shabby chic easel and moved a large mirror that was on my porch in front of the tree, to execute my theme. That was when I spotted the chandelier that was hanging from a planter bracket on the porch. I had purchased it in the summer with the intention of removing the wiring and making it into an ecofriendly light by adding some solar receptor thingees - that never happened.

But now I could see how the clear plastic dangling chandelier bits resembled icicles and would be perfect for my indooroutdoor theme. That was when I looked up and saw a large overhanging branch...

well you know what happened next.

When I stood back and looked I thought, why stop there?

So the croquet mallets were hung from the branches with care, a Canadian Tire toboggan would also add glare, and the shabby chic easel was soon in the air.

One of my Christmas Decorating, 101 type friends, said, “What’s next? The kitchen sink?”

A candy striped ribbon was added with care to the shiny brass sink that was sure to draw stares.

Out of the box thinkers know, in the midst of creative activity ideas can and do seemingly come out of nowhere. But they always have a source.

The Blue Spruce was planted in memory of my father 16 years ago. When my mother passed away three years after my dad, she asked my sister and I to move the tree. Moving the tree would turn out to be its own creative adventure.

Taking a page out of our dad’s book, “Never hire anyone,” we googled up the Yahoo, as my sister would say, with the following search: How to move a tree that has been planted for three years, that was already three years old before planting, without killing it and for zero dollars.

“Very carefully,” was the Internet’s response.

So, we carefully began digging and after some hours of concentrated effort and near exhaustion my sister blurted out, “When dad said we were getting the land, I didn’t know we’d have to move it.”

We laughed hysterically which gave us the energy we needed to finish our spade work.

When we dug as deep as we could, we lifted the tree with some makeshift wooden planks, laid the tree on its side, and wrapped its roots in a sheet. Then we loaded it in the back of my very tiny hatchback, where it stuck out of at least two feet. We finally made it to my house and replanted the blue spruce, where it stands to this day, miraculously healthy, straight, and strong.

Would my father like how I decorated his tree? Heck, yes! But not for its aesthetic attributes. He would no doubt have suggested that I patent the idea of life-sized ornaments and make a killing on them.

I know the actual decorating idea itself was inspired by my mother, who was a lover of Christmas and all its bright lights, flashy sentiments, and unadulterated adornments, and ornaments, many of which she made with her own hands.

The chandelier, the easel, and all the shiny bits and bobs on the tree are for my mom - the sporting and winter fun items are for my dad - both HUGE out of the box thinkers who always taught us to march to the beat of our own drum.

Which reminds me, I think I may have a drum set somewhere that I could add to the tree.

Women’s Self Defence Class A Real ‘HIT’

On Saturday, Dec. 3, Sensei Dave Woods from NorAlta Jiu-Jitsu held a women’s self-defence class in Lloydminster at the Midwest Outreach Center, and by all accounts, the ladies got a real “kick” out of it.

The course was from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., and the class consisted of personal protection tips and habits to minimize the student’s vulnerability and how to achieve that “winning” mentality if ever attacked.

There was also a significant segment of the class devoted to learning simple and effective self-defence techniques from a variety of attacks. A portion of the class was open to the students to inquire about attacks that they have either personally experienced or have grave concerns about.

All proceeds were donated to the Inter-

val Home who graciously donated the training space. The ladies donated $110, and Sensei Woods donated his equipment, time and body to the cause.

“I wanted to give something back and to help out those in need this holiday season, and what better way (for me) than to offer up some self-defence techniques and have fun doing it.

I’m looking at organizing another class in February, and this time with the holiday season behind us more ladies might be able to attend and really help out the Interval Home because they do some amazing work for those who are in a pretty bad spot,” said Sensei Woods.

Brightening Many A Blue Christmas

a warning that their child would be rejected and that Mary would know profound grief for the suffering of her son. Father Bill Hupalo from St. Olga’s Ukrainian Catholic Church reminded people not to pretend all is well if things aren’t, but to remind those in need that there is hope.

“In silence and in faith we name the rough, crooked, and broken places within us. And as we light the candle of Grief, we ask God to shine the healing light of Christ upon us,” said First United Church Reverend Andrew Kinoti during the ceremony.

Lakeland Funeral Home’s Candice Anderson and Crossroads Funeral Chapel’s Alva Creech assisted guests in lighting candles symbolizing prayers of hope, guidance, and possibilities coming to light.

“Light a candle for a prayer that is too deep for words,” said Father Bill Hupalo.

Hilda Bell also read on behalf of St. Savior’s Anglican Church reminding guests to thank those who have touched our lives

Approximately 90 people gathered at Vermilion’s Parkview Alliance Church on December 7, to celebrate the 4th Annual Blue Christmas Service.

The Vermilion and District Ministerial Association collaborated with Crossroads Funeral Chapel and Lakeland Funeral Home to provide a candle lighting ceremony with entertainment by members and the Cantata Choir.

Guests were welcomed at whatever stage of grieving they were experiencing for several types of loss; the life of a loved one, the loss of relationships, loss of health, or loss of employment.

Pastor Harvey Hussey read a scripture reminding guests that Mary and Joseph had also felt both joy and sorrow. His meditation focused on the fact that even though they were thrilled with the birth of their newborn child, they were also given

in times of need and fear.

Between readings, the Cantata Choir and church members sang songs of comfort, hope, and Christmas spirit.

Mannville community Church Reverend Dave Kenny closed the service with a prayer, and Ganton Presbyterian Church’s

Carol Selte offered a blessing.

Guests continued to enjoy visiting over refreshments provided by the Vermilion Ministerial Association.

“We would like to thank all those who volunteered and everyone who attended,” said Linda Moses.

The Holidays Upcoming Marwayne Christmas Gala

The Marwayne Community Hall as part of the Ag Society will be hosting their Annual Christmas Gala on December 17, at 8 p.m.

Excited for Christmas, families congregated at the Vermilion Arena on December 4, as Mrs. Claus joined Santa this year during the Annual Santa Skate.

This is the second year that Crossroads Funeral Chapel and Dragon Hare Studios joined the Town of Vermilion and the Jr. B. Tigers to put on the Santa Skate, allowing families to skate with junior hockey players and the Grinch. Several children lined up to have their photo taken with Santa and Mrs. Claus.

“We wanted to take part in something fun and festive for the children. With Vermilion being hockey oriented and with this being a family event, we really wanted to jump on board,” said Karen Selte who dressed as an elf along with Kim Shimko for the special occasion.

Jr. B. Tigers - Santa Skate

The Jr. B. Tigers played tag while skating with younger children throughout the afternoon. The Grinch was also suited in ice skates this year, and interacted with children as he skated.

“We do it for the children. It’s a great opportunity to give back to the community and help some of the children learn to skate,” said Jr. B. Tigers Captain Rylan Mauws.

“Years ago when I was a child, I remember coming and having my photo taken with Santa, when I had older relatives that played on the team,” said Layne Zack.

Several children enjoyed the opportunity to skate with people they look up to.

“I enjoy any chance to skate with family and friends,” said Mady Myshak who had attended the Santa Skate for the second time.

Glittering Nutcracker Performance

A magical Christmas theater production ‘The Nutcracker’ wowed the audience at the Lakeland College Alumni Theater in Vermilion on December 10.

On December 6, 2016, Council for the Town of Vermilion gave first reading to the 2017 Tax Rate Bylaw which gives approval to the 2017 Operating and Capital Budget and the five year budget plan.

School requisitions are not yet available and have been included as status quo. The Town of Vermilion collects the education tax on behalf of the province and has no control over the School Tax Rate. The municipality is requesting 1% increase in the municipal levy resulting in a levy of $5,097,953. The municipal tax rate results in a increase of 1% for the residential properties and the non residential properties an increase of 1.6%.

The utility rates include the Water Flat rate increasing by 0.5% while consumption is decreasing by 3%. The Sewer rate increased by 1%. Recycling Rate

is reduced from $7.87 to $3.00 per month for residential but commercial in increase from $7.98 to $18.75 per month.

The residential garbage rate will remain status quo however the commercial will increase from $14.92 to $19.24 per month to reflect the actual collection costs.

The tax rates have been established based on an expected growth of 2% non residential and 1% residential assessment for 2017. On average, residential properties will see an increase of $25-$30 in their property Town of Vermilion Ta xes excluding the ef fects that market value may have on their assessment and whether the province increases the school requisitions.

Council will review the 2017 budget when assessment and school requisitions are available in April of 2017 and proceed to second and third reading to the tax rate bylaw.

Transportation and Utilities 2017 Proposed Utility Rates The 2017 proposed utility rates were approved by Council on December 6.

Parks, Recreation and Culture Committee Curling Rink LED Lighting Upgrade T h e C u r l i n g C l u b w o u l d l i ke t o upgrade the facility lights from florescent to LED lighting and apply for a C o m mu ni t y Fac ili t y En han c e m e nt Program Grant for the upgrade, which is a 50/50 contribution grant program.

Council has suppor ted the Curling Club with a financial contribution to the

project of $22,500.00 which is 50% of the funds that is required for the Curling Club to apply for the grant.

Medical Clinic Update - Dewberry Satellite Clinic/College Clinic Council discussed the possibility of setting up satellite clinics in the smaller communities outside of Vermilion.

Generally the process to set up a satellite clinic would be for the PCN to send a Nurse Practitioner to the community for a predetermined amount of time to see if there would be enough clientele to warrant a Doctor going. Manager for the Town of Vermilion Dion Pollard has been in contact with the Village of Dewberry office about the possibility of a satellite clinic there. There is currently a doctor practicing occasionally at a satellite clinic at Lakeland College.

North Hill Park Committee Council approved the development of a North Hill Park Sub-Committee to plan, provide direction, and oversee potential completion of the project including fundraising, if required. The committee will consist of two representatives from the Parks, Recreation & Culture Board and volunteer community members.

North Hill Park In preparation of building the North Hill Bike Park, Council has autho rized Municipal Risk Services Ltd. to complete a risk assessment on the

park to ensure all safety requirements are met before the park is opened and to train staff and the Committee about risk management in recreation/municipal settings.

Bantam C Provincial Tournament The Bantam C Boys would like to host a Provincial Tournament this year in the Stadium the weekend of March 16 – 19, 2017. Council supports the Bantam C Provincial Tournament by making the stadium ice available for the tournament.

Family and Community Support Services Council approved a request from the FCSS Advisory Committee to develop a Community Directory of local health and wellness programs. The directory will be distributed to Vermilion Residents in 2017 and available on the Town of Vermilion website.

VIBE Mental Health Art Gala The Mental Health Art Gala is held e a c h M ay to i n c r e a s e c o m m u n i t y awareness of mental health issues and how to address them. Approximately 200 people attended this event each year. In 2017, VIBE will be hosting their 5th annual gala and have requested the FCSS Advisory Committee to support the gala by covering the rental cost of the Regional Centre. Council approved the request from VIBE to help support their 5th annual Mental Health Art Gala.

Memories From A Canadian Soldier - Geoff Clouter

Minburn Resident Geof f Clouter j o i n e d t h e C a n a d i a n m i l i t ar y a n d attended the Royal Canadian Regiment Battle School in Petawawa September 21 in 1985. He served in the Canadian forces for six years.

“I was stationed in Baden-Baden, Germany from 1988 – 1991 on active duty during the first Gulf war in 1991.

We had people in Qatar in the Gulf War; I never had to go, but we were on

I served for six years, and I was a corporal when I left. I’m glad I got out when I did as I was an infantry soldier.

There were some good highlights from my time overseas in Germany. We saw the Berlin wall come down and there was a huge difference between the east and west of Berlin. We took time off to drive up and watch it; the gates were open, and we could drive from one side of the city to the other. The Germans were very friendly to Canadians. Once

they heard we were not American - the coffee and pie came out!

I joine d the Cad ets when I was 13-years-old, so it was a natural progression for me to join the military after that.

I will never regret my time in the military.

It taught me discipline, interaction with other people, how to be respectful and teamwork,” said Clouter.

Don’t Top Those Trees – I Can’t Bear It You See

“I care deeply about Vermilion and the issue of tree care. I would like to create public awareness about topping trees and see dangerous tree care practices stop.

This way our town can grow to be even more beautiful than it already is,” said Lakeland College Landscape & Horticulture Sustainability Coordinator, Jared Fehr.

Written by Dr. Seuss in 1971, ‘The Lorax’ is a classic children’s book; eclectically detailing environmental issues. Incorporating the Lorax character, who speaks for the trees.

Because of his passion for trees, Fehr is able to identify with the Lorax character. He also noted that having eclectic influences in his work history has inspired his creative approach to landscape and horticulture.

To Fehr, horticulture is an art form that is also functional. Fehr recommends building efficiencies into designs and creating the path of least resistance in a way that flows seamlessly.

“It’s not about what it is, it’s about what it can become,” said Dr. Seuss in ‘The Lorax’.

“The creative aspects of horticulture are what keep me in love with it,” said Fehr.

At the Lakeland Campuses, he designed custom hanging basket hangers using wagon parts that tie the towns hanging basket project in with the agricultural roots of the college; as well as helped complete the landscaping around the living roof in the heart of the Vermilion campus. At the Lloydminster campus, he has designed elaborate industrial benches as part of a seating area outside the power engineering classroom.

“These spaces allow social interaction, and people really appreciate the artistic nature of things when they visit. Positive social interactions make people happy,” said Fehr.

“One morning, I came to this glorious place. And I first saw the trees, or trees such as these. The touch of their tufts was much softer than silk. And they had the sweet smell of fresh butterfly milk. I felt a great leaping of joy in my heart,” said Dr. Seuss in ‘The Lorax’.

As a publically funded employee himself, Fehr feels the need to do what is right. He suggests hiring International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) certified arborists and mentioned that making regulations for this is up to municipalities and publically funded institutions. Fehr noted that cities have regulations on removing mature trees without approval. He went on to say that though it is not yet legislated, that the Canadian Landscape Standard will define the best practices for landscape management.

“With all tree species there is a huge financial advantage to not topping them,” said Fehr.

He went on to explain that the practice of tree topping can make them invaluable, make them more susceptible to insects, fungi, and disease; shorten their life span, and create insurance liabilities or negative assets. Fehr encourages people who prune trees for a living to get properly educated

and certified.

Ac c ording to Fehr, preventative measures the province has taken, has led Alberta to be the least affected location of Dutch Elm Disease in the world. The value of elm trees in Alberta is $600 million with each elm tree being worth $300,000.

“Improper work can decrease your property value. When trees are topped, customers often have to call workers back to do more work on the same tree, versus spending just a little more on proper pruning knowing it’s a long term investment and money well spent.

Trees stabilize property values for entire communities, and a neighbor receiving improper tree care to one fully mature tree can reduce the value of every house on that street by thousands of dollars,” said Fehr.

Fehr recommends doing your research and asking your arborist a few questions before agreeing to hire them.

(Dead, Diseased, and Damaged) Do you know what NTP means? (Natural Target Pruning) Will they top your trees if you ask them to? (According to Fehr, their answer should be, “No.”) He said that when pruning a tree, you should never take off more than one third of living wood, and even recommends keeping it below one quarter.

“Think of a mature tree as the lungs of our planet. When you top a tree, you are unnecessarily amputating half your lung to make room for your stomach. It’s out of balance,” said Fehr.

Fehr explained this by saying that the flush of new growth seen after topping a tree, can actually harm its ability to photosynthesize by using up all the energy stored in the root system which can kill a lot of the roots.

“When trees get big, people get scared of them, but trees that have been topped are more susceptible to being blown over or uprooted by storms,” said Fehr.

He hopes that people will not go on making irrational decisions based on fear, but evaluate their conscience and do what’s right; creating a healthier, more sustainable environment and profitable choice for themselves and the community.

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not,” said Dr. Seuss in ‘The Lorax’.

Highland Dance Evaluations Vermilion Public Library Art Display Stuart Pauls Submitted

The Vermilion Public Library is proud to introduce their upcoming art display entitled Geometric Abstraction, which will be shown December 14 through January 18 2017.

The featured art is part of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts Traveling Exhibition (TREX) Program. Geometric Abstraction is an art movement focused on the use of line, shape, surface, point and color to convey concepts.

One piece entitled Chogak Colour 20, 2009 by fiber artist Diana Un-Jin Cho, uses Korean mulberry paper as her medium on canvas.

Korean Mulberry paper, also called Hanji paper, is a traditional handmade paper made from the inner bark of the Paper Mulberry tree.

The bark is har vested, skinned, boiled, washed and then pounded. A mucus from the Hibiscus Manihot (or Sunset Hibiscus) is poured onto the pounded bark and a sheet of paper is formed using special formation techniques. The sheet is then dried. Korean Mulberry paper is extremely durable and even waterproof.

On November 24, two members of the Vermilion Highland Dance group went to Lloydminster for testing. The girls tested the lilt and the flora. Katie received a highly commended evaluation and Alexandra received a commended evaluation. The dancers only have the ability to test once a year.

We would like to send a huge thank you to Vermilion Credit Union for their donation towards our Accelerated Reader program. Without their kind donation, our program would not be as efficient or as much fun for our students.

A few others who have made donations to our Learning Commons include: Euijin Roh and Youngseok You fro m Lor r aine’s Li qu or S tore, who has been making annual donations (to the library, the lunch program and the breakfast program) for a few years; Shannon Leonard, who brought in over 300 books for us to use in the librar y or in classrooms; and Mrs. Ruth Prill, who brought in two bags of brand new books from Coles. In past years, families have made donations of slightly used books to our library as well. We certainly appreciate all that has been donated.

We had our monthly assembly on December 7. Mrs. Tomkins told us our total AR points to date equals 6984. Mrs. Webb commended citizenship projects in our school – Grade

6 caroling, Grade 5 garbage pick-up, Grade 1 Halloween singing, and all the students who have made hospital crafts. Mrs. Moses told us about our new virtue – Responsibility – and how we can be responsible at home, at school and in our community. The Grade 3 classes gave a presentation, with 3B talking about what a bank loan is, 3A telling about what the organization Kiva is, and 3C relaying a story of how Kiva impacted one person’s life.

Each Grade 3 class has given Kiva loans to people from Peru and Columbia to help improve their quality of life.

The Grade 6 VIBE Advisory wanted to organize an activity during Bullying Awareness Week, so they created puppet shows on the topic of bullying and presented them to the younger grades. It is wonderful to see these students take on a leadership role in our school.

VIBE is looking for donations of baby jars with lids from food and juice.

They need about 400 of them. If you have any that you can donate, please send them to school and leave them in the office for Alana, our VIBE Coach.

Last week, members of BTPS School Councils met for an evening of learning and sharing ideas. E. H. Walter School provided an excellent venue and tour s of this wonder ful new facility were very well received.

The Sr. High Student Council has been busy organizing “Five Days of Christmas” for the school starting on Monday, December 19. Monday - P.J. Day, Tuesday – Decorate Cookies and Fuzzy Sock Day, Wednesday- Ugly Christmas Sweater – Red/Green Day, Thursday - Christmas Hat/Toque Day, Friday - Warm Fuzzies, Ethnic Lunch, Air Bands, Movies.

Elementary and Jr. High students will be going on their annual movie trip on Friday, December 23. The Jr. High students will be seeing Star Wars: Rogue One and the

elementary will watch “Sing.”

Everyone was thrilled when the lunchroom opened, and delicious smells seeped out of the Father Cordeau kitchen for Jr. High and Sr. High students and staff last week. We would like to welcome Tayler MacNeill to our staff, and we are already hearing rave reviews about her food.

The St. Jerome’s Sr. Girls Spartans Basketball Team kicked off their season this year at their home tournament. The girls had a strong weekend and finished with a 3rd place finish. The girls beat Kitscoty 67 - 23 on Friday to start the tournament off. Their second game saw them face a tough foe in the Ryley Rebels. The game was close all the way through, and the girls game up short as they lost 49-47.

The girls battle back in their final game and beat Marwayne 47-26.

The Jr. Girls Basketball season has started out with a tournament and league play each week.The Jr. High team worked on team play and ball skills ending the weekend tournament successively with a win. They played an away game Wednesday, December 7, against Holy Rosary winning 59-10. Keep up the great work.

Classes were excited to have our divisional Youth Leader, Tharin Fischer, come and visit them last Thursday in their classrooms. Tharin will be visiting the school every second Thursday. He will share his Catholic faith with the students through songs, stories, prayers, and activities.

We will be celebrating our December School Mass this Thursday, December 15 at 10:30 a.m. We invite Holy Name Parish community members to join with us for this occasion.

On November 25, 2016 J. R. Robson volleyball athletes traveled to Edmonton to watch the University of Alberta Golden bears and Pandas play volleyball. The Bears and Pandas swept the University of Winnipeg in 3 straight sets. “It was a terrific experience for the students of J. R. to watch a high level of volleyball and to see what they can become with lots of hard work,” says coach Mr. Woodward. Thanks to Doc Holidays transportation for providing a coach to the event. J. R. Robson would like to thank all

the volleyball athletes who were fantastic ambassadors of our school throughout the season.

The junior boys were in Ryley on December 2, also playing in their first tournament of the season. This season’s junior boys team features Owen Aitkin, Steven Bodurka, Chase Bowman, Clay Bryden, Davynn Convey, Bray Crowe, Jayce Fedirko, Jace Hughes, William Kozak, Jake Robertson, Tylin Vold, and Brody Young.

The senior boys’ basketball team traveled to Daysland on the weekend of December 2 for their first tournament action of the season.

There they won two of three matches despite being a young and small team of eight athletes. This year’s roster features Ossman and Azro Abuzukar, Carson, Jackson and

Mark Livingstone, Matthew Madsen, Tanner Nelson, John Pries, and Logan Schmahl.

Progress reports for junior high core subjects and all senior subjects were sent out last week to capture the start of the second quarter of the school year. In addition to the mobile app and having online access to student grades, students and parents may reference progress reports for a snapshot of progress, successes, and missing work.
