Wide-Variety At The 5th Annual Snowmobile Expo

A large crowd of snowmobile enthusiasts and vintage collectors from BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan turned out for the 5th Annual Snowmobile Expo hosted by the Vermilion Ridge Riders at the Vermilion Regional Centre on December 3.

A 1973 Boaski was one of the featured vintage snowmobiles at the Expo. Fourteen - year - old Hugh Scott was the young man who rebuilt the sled himself after he purchased the old model from his neighbour.

“I tore it apart all summer. There were big holes in the hood and the side when I got it, and the seat was all gone. I did all the work rebuilding it myself. I used fiberglass to fill and repair the holes. It’s a rider, it’s not a racer,” said Scott.

“We are all snowmobile fanatics here, we live for winter and snow,” said Hugh’s dad, Mark Scott.

onship has taken place in Eagle River, Wisconsin, for the last 50 years.

They had a shortage of ice this year and had to cut us back to a 3-lap final, so I had to get it done in the 3 laps to win. It was an exciting race and the crowd were standing on their feet,” said Liba.

“The story is, that originally it was built for Banff National Park and that’s why the colour is a bright orange; it would have been used on the trails. I restored it back to the original colour and rebuilt all the wood

Snowmobile dealers from Baddock Power Products (Polaris), Rec-Tech Power Products (Skidoo), OJ’s Leisure & Marine (Yahama), and T&T Power Sports (Arctic Cat) were on hand to show off all the latest models, taking questions from interested buyers in attendance. Clothing and accessories were also part of the show as were NAPA Auto Parts (FXR), Midwest Auto Supply (509) and Decals and Sign Obsessions. Continued on page 3.

Loved ones were remembered as the names of over 300 were read at a Tree of Remembrance Ceremony outside the Creech’s Crossroads Funeral Chapel in Vermilion on December 1.

“It’s a way for people to remember their loved ones this Christmas; when they see the tree during Christmas they will think of their loved ones without feeling sad,” said Funeral Director Kim Creech (Shimko).

Over 100 people attended the ceremony.

We set it up here and invited people to submit the names of their loved ones.

Christmas is a sad time when you have lost someone, but you are not supposed to be sad all the time. This is something we thought was good for the community and something that we wanted to give back to the community,” said Shimko.

Shimko added there’s no way around it after someone important dies the holidays are often never the same again. Traditions, events, parties, songs, movies – the grief triggers are everywhere. The best thing is to try keeping your loved one’s memory alive

by continuing to make them a part of your holiday season.

“We at Creech’s Crossroads Funeral Chapel are a family owned and operated business, and we want to give back to the families we serve,” added Shimko.

“We are really happy to have such a great turnout here tonight as well as to

Hot chocolate and snacks were served to the crowd who attended the ceremony afterward.

Vermilion Christmas Farmer’s Market

Approximately 40 vendors were present at the first of four Christmas Farmer’s Market’s at the Elk’s Hall on November 29.

Many homemade products were on display including perishables and storage, clothing and accessories, bath and body products, woodworking, books, and home decor. Several specialized Christmas gifts were available as well as anytime products. “The Farmer’s Market is a good community endeavour. It brings in people from quite a distance, and offers local people the opportunity to sell their products,� said organizer Evelyn Throndson.

Some of the vendors were very new to selling their products, and some had made a living at it for decades.

With the help of her sister Sarah, Nicole Holway from Mannville presented her artwork and accessories at her first ever Christmas Sale. “It started as a hobby, and I decided I might as well try selling it too,� said Nicole Holway.

George Bailey from Lloydminster had a collection of fishing tackle available specially packaged with safety tips, recipes, and sound fishing advice. His 45 - year hobby allows him to socialize with others and enjoy fishing even while he’s not on the water.

Author, Lavera Goodeye, from Coronation, had her book ‘Seven To Seventy: My Journey Through Time’ available. Through her writing, Goodeye intends to alleviate stigmas and let others know that their lives have value. “I’ve been helped a lot and wanted to help others by writing my journey of truth and reconciliation,� said Goodeye.

When asked why she liked distributing her homemade natural soaps at the farmer’s market, Vermilion’s Lauren Wilcox responded, “You have the opportunity to tell people about your product and explain why it is healthy for them. In a store with so many options, people often select a bar of soap just because it’s there.�

Magical Christmas Nutcracker Show Coming To Vermilion

W hat b et ter way to g et into t h e Christmas spirit this year than taking your family to watch a magical Christmas theater production!

Dance Instructor Sandy Sundborg has been teaching dance and performing for over 40 years, with seven years in Alberta.

The Wainwright Dance Academy, a parent-run studio, will present the s h o w ‘ N u t c r a c ke r ’ i n S u n d b o r g ’s production, and it is her 30 th year to put on the show. “It’s a traditional Christmas stor y about a girl named Clara who receives a special gift from her Godfather. The story has been around since the late 1800’s, and Peter Tchaikovsk y was the original composer of the music.

Our students in the production are aged 8 years and upwards. This will be the third year we will be at Lakeland College,� said Sundborg.

Sundborg says that the production appeals to people of all ages and it is an engaging show to watch. “The children look forward to this p er for m an c e ever y year, an d it i s something special for them, it’s not like doing a recital or competition, they get

Love And Compassion At Christmas Time

I love Christmas and everything that goes along with the season. I used to struggle with the urge to spend copious amounts of money on decorations, but I have become much better at walking away from the things I don’t need.

Times are tough, and I had decided that this year my house will be the same as it was in Christmas past; minimal decorations and not focusing on how much is under the Christmas tree. When I was a child, Christmas was not nearly as extravagant as it is now and I think that is how it should be. We would make popcorn garland and handmade ornaments for the tree, and bake cookies, and cakes with my Mom. My mom always said, “Less is better than all the clutter.” LOL. Even this

Our children aren’t benefiting from the Christmas displays, and I wonder if we are sending the wrong message to our children. We should be teaching our children that this time of year is also be about giving instead of receiving.

Homelessness is a major concern, and maybe we should be teaching our children to acknowledge the homeless instead of ignoring them. Maybe we should be teaching our children about compassion and love for all human beings instead of teaching them to love materialistic items more. I feel homeless people are misunderstood; we have a tendency to assume they are all drug addicts and alcoholics that do not deserve our compassion, but like I always say, never judge a person until you walk a mile in their shoes. Maybe a lot of their addiction happened after becom-

year when she and Glen came over for supper a couple of weeks back, she said: “ I like your Christmas lights, they are simple and not overdone.” I have seen some houses in Lloydminster decorated beyond decorated; the flashing lights would give someone with epilepsy a seizure if they happened to stop and look at them.

This year the economy has been so bad, and people of our community and surrounding communities are struggling financially. Some have been laid off from their jobs and unable to obtain steady and well-paying employment. Some people will have to rely on organizations like Santa’s Anonymous and local food banks.

Last year our local Santa’s Annonymous didn’t receive enough in donations to cover the demand and had to dip into their reserve funds. Why not sacrifice some of your Christmas decorations and pass on the money you would have spent to someone in need. If you can afford a

Instead of passing them on the street with our noses in the air why not share a kind word or a kind gesture like buying them a hamburger; I’m sure it would be greatly appreciated.

Christmas in my eyes has lost the emotional bond it once had. Christmas used to be a time when communities had inexpensive Christmas parties, outdoor activities for children like sledding down the closest big hill and families spending as much time as possible with each other. Christmas has lost its compassion and love, let’s bring back the human side of Christmas and give rather than to receive.

A n o t h e r N o ve m ber passes us by, this one rather quickly for me for some reason, the holiday season is approaching, and I’m not sure I am ready for that, not that I don’t enjoy it. It just means that most of the regular hunting seasons are over, along with the many exciting outdoor adventures, now that doesn’t mean I will not get outdoors or have good adventures. It just goes from action packed to mellow rather quickly. I hadn’t slept in on a Saturday for months since September when the bow hunting season began but at the end of November that changes for me. I may try to sleep in on the first weekend of December, maybe even to slightly after sunrise, but

I’m sure my internal clock will go off with the sunrise, which will be a sleep in for me.

Now it’s not like I won’t have anything to do because I will have lots to do. I will get to spend much more time with my puppy Miss Oohohh which we both need, and there are winter archery leagues and normal winter chores. Other than the winter archery leagues which are indoors I will still spend most of my time outdoors.

This will be when momma of the house gets her big loads of firewood. Although cutting firewood is a lot of backbreaking hard work, I will get outdoors in the fresh air and required said exercise, plus the extra time and help from Miss Oohohh would be precious.

As I write this there are a couple of days left in November, and it’s not over yet, just this past weekend the wife and I shared another adventure and were successful in

With a couple of days left I have a whitetail buck tag left, however, I have seen many and have had many opportunities’, but I am happy with our success thus far and will not mind hanging that tag on the Xmas tree.

Many may ask what we will do with all that bounty…well, let’s see last week’s menu was moose minute steak on Monday, which was even more mouth-watering than I remembered or expected. Tuesday-Wed we made up a big pot of moose chili, Thursday was moose taco Thursday, Friday was moose tenderloin, Sunday I couldn’t resist more moose minute steaks with a whole mess of fresh garden homemade tater fries, down to perfection in the oven, enough leftovers, so it’s what’s for dinner today also.

This week a huge elk or moose roast is on the agenda, I have been dreaming about it for two weeks, not only the main meal but sandwiches for days after, so as you can see around my home wild game isn’t a supplement …it’s a staple.

Now that 2016 hunting season is winding down, I will have to jump right into my winter activities and adventures, dying to try out my new snowshoes; that may be well described if I get help from my assistant. Can’t wait to get the dog sled running, then there’s ice fishing…antler shed hunting again already soon…I found a huge area that needs exploring on foot…the list goes on.

When The Smoke Clears Winter is a time of relaxation and peace because there is little to do! …or is it just because you have the luxury of thinking so!

She also stated that Sunday was the only day that she got to sleep in so we were to “get it done,” so we rose well before sunrise and headed out, it was a very interesting morning.

Just like the evening before…deer were moving everywhere, we must have seen 50 deer, both whitetail and mule deer, many bucks, saw six moose four were bulls, coyote, porcupine, sharp tail grouse and even a great bald eagle.

The only deer we didn’t see was “Lucky” the big mule buck I would see ever time Roxanne wasn’t with me, Friday evening was no different he was the first deer I saw that evening. It was a great morning to be outdoors; that afternoon I told Roxanne I had to go pick up a trail camera on a property. As we looked over some pictures, Roxanne stated how she didn’t like that bush. She was mumbling about never seeing any deer there when a couple doe’s and that buck showed up; he was a decent 5x5 buck with a heavy body, not a real wall hanger but it didn’t matter…all Roxanne saw was a full deep freeze. Before we could discuss the other buck, we were standing over this buck giving thanks, after we got him loaded on the truck we were on the way home, Roxanne had a big smile on her face, not only thankful for the buck but a Sunday morning sleep in was looking good. Upon arriving home, I told Roxanne good job and to go relax by the fireplace, and I took care of all the processing of the deer, well with the big help from my trustful assistant Miss Oohohh.

It was a great year for Roxanne, now only with being successful with the hunting draws, but also being so successful

Wonder if it sends a message that may not be a good one... about precocious ability to deal with the world skipping over the path of little mistakes and achievements that actually led to their fame. Tulliby Lake, Alberta - During the early morni n g h o u r s of December 3rd, 2016, s o m e o n e entered a farmyard located northwest of Tulliby Lake and stole a black 2010 Chevrolet 2500 pickup truck bearing Saskatchewan plate 605CYM. The vehicle is a 4 door crew cab with a factor y chrome package, including a chrome bug deflector. tions and influences is really what made them who they are...and without it they would not arrive at the exact version of themselves in adulthood. Maybe it plays on our adult ego, glossing past memories of rebellious and immature youth, knowing everything before we actually did. I can picture all the parents nodding.

Or is it just taking small things far too seriously? Probably.

Not a fan of adult ‘perks’ acquired without the pains…the ‘tortuous’ adolescence that rounds our edges to help make us better citizens, we hope. There are so many things about nature, culture, history, relationships, and business to learn and influence us...how do you condense all those things into a shorter life? I suppose there are always exceptions.

Look at the ages of past prime ministers or presidents - the range for the majority fits roughly in the 45-65 age period.

The median age for prime ministers and presidents...both right at 54. Well at least that is according to Wikipedia.

Interesting...but does that bring us to the point?

Well...it should take a leader that long to put together the portfolio that can convince us maybe they have what it takes to fulfill the job description. It could say they acquired the wisdom desired in a leader by then, and they are still fit to cope with the stresses and physical demands of leadership. Our current Prime Minister certainly fits in on the early end of that scale, the PresidentElect on the latter end. I’m sure that says something about who we choose and where we are as countries. Or literally nothing at all.

Maybe those portrayals help children identify that even they can take part and take charge of what is happening around them. The U.S. election certainly made many adults even here in Canada

feel like the cartoon Coyote about to ride the ACME contraption right over the cliff edge, with only the vote to blow wind into the sail defying gravity. Inevitably failing, an epic fall…whistling to a distant thump and puff of dust in desert canyon below.

Was that uncertainty felt…the road before the cliff edge…where we thought we would all be? History has told us, again, that we are really lousy making predictions. Is the fall a better path when looking back with hindsight? Hope not.

Humor has value...the Coyote always seemed tough enough to survive the fall...even if worse for wear. The sound of an accordion trailing as Wiley walks away reminding us that even in hard moments, life can sure be funny. Then again...life isn’t always a laughing matter.

The small beginning s and g oo d humor could sure help us in our path to making the right future choices.

Bouquet On Wednesday, November 30th I went to the Eastalta Co-op to pick up a Ham, and while was there I began chatting with a lady who said she is a RCMP Corporal’s wife from Vermilion. The hams were big so we decided to share a ham. The meat department employee cut a ham in half and wrapped it for us. When I went to pay for my ham the lady at the checkout informed me that my ham was already paid for by the lady with the other half and that she wished me a Merry Christmas. I would like to send out a heartfelt THANK YOU to this very nice lady for her generosity. It was very much appreciated and I wish you a very Merry Christmas as well.

It ’s ginger bread time. Ginger bread dates all the way back to the 16th century.

It was commonly cut into various figures of people or animals and then decorated. It was a popular cookie among royalty. The origin of the gingerbread house goes back to Germany and is connected to the fabled story of Hansel and Gretel.

This recipe can be used to make gingerbread men, cookies or a gingerbread house. If you are making a gingerbread house or gingerbread men, roll the dough out on a floured surface. If you are building a gingerbread mansion then you may want to double the recipe. I taught a ginger bread house making course once, and I had one lady tell me that she got so into it, that after the course that she soon

had her own village. Make a pattern for your house out of light cardboard, such as a cereal box and tape it together with tape to be sure it all fits before you use it for the cookie dough. Roll out the dough to 1/4” on wax paper or parchment paper or a well flowered surface. Cut around your cardboard pattern with a knife on the dough.

Bake on a lightly greased cookie sheet.

Be sure to cut out your doors and windows before you bake the pieces. Bake at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes, depending on your oven. To “glue” the house together, and the candy on the house you will want to use the Royal Icing recipe. The type of molasses you use does matter, so be sure to use cooking molasses. Molasses by the way is a good source of iron.

Gingerbread Men or Cookies or Houses 1 cup sugar 3/4 cup butter 1 egg

joints, but you can also use a knife to apply the icing to the cookie house pieces. If a piece breaks or cracks you can repair it with this icing. Royal Icing dries hard, so cover the icing in the bowl with plastic wrap to prevent it from drying out to quickly while you are working on the house.

Decorating Tips I have used Shreddies for shingles, glued on with royal icing and then sprinkled with powdered icing sugar for snow.

You can also use the royal icing to have icicles hanging from the house. Use soup cans to hold the walls and roof in place while the icing hardens. Stick on the candy of your choice with the royal icing.

When decorating gingerbread men you can use royal icing or butter cream icing.

You can add Christmas trees, snowmen, deer etc. to your gingerbread house landscape. Your gingerbread house creation can become a centerpiece, and children love to eat them on Christmas day.

“Spice Up Your Life” Book Launch

“Writing is like being pregnant; it’s always at the back of your mind and you are aware you have a due date, labour, and delivery coming up. With writing you can take your book back, but with pregnancy, you’re stuck with what you get,” said Rosabelle Daugela as she launched her 3rd novel, “Spice Up Your Life,” at the Vermilion Public Library on November 29.

A former Vermilion resident, Daugela delivered a funny and uplifting presentation of how she got into writing, what readers might find in her book, and of fered suggestions of easy habits for people to follow to cultivate more

happiness in their lives.

After selling her family business in 1999, she knew life would never be the same. With no family still at home, she was advised to go spread happiness. Her research and stories span the globe, and a few stories were even included from Daugela’s friends in Vermilion.

Daugela noted that studies show people are only in control of 40 percent of their happiness, with 50 percent depending on genes, and 10 percent being left to circumstances. Anything that someone absolutely loves to do are considered joy moments including playing with pets or grandchildren, reading, gardening, listening to music,

4 Tablespoons cooking molasses Pinch of salt 2 cups flour 2 teaspoons baking soda 2 teaspoons cinnamon 2 teaspoons ginger Mix together the sugar, butter, egg and molasses. Add the dry ingredients and then mix. Shape into small balls of about the size of a walnut. Roll the balls in white sugar. Place on a greased cookie sheet.

Flatten the balls a bit with a fork. Bake at 375 degrees for 8 minutes. This is a moist and chewy soft centered ginger cookie.

For a harder gingersnap or for gingerbread men or houses bake up to 15 minutes.

In her discussion, she promoted the idea of using positive self-talk.

Her example of this was that if someone compliments your shirt, not to say, “This old thing,” but to make a habit of saying, “Thank you”.

She also suggested that people save

“Life without happiness would be just like a house without windows, a garden without flowers, a party without guests, or a rainstorm without a rainbow,” said Daugela.

The Holidays Upcoming Ron Moses Community Christmas Dinner

The 21st Annual Ron Moses Community Christmas Dinner will be hosted at the Vermilion Senior’s Centre on December 25, with entertainment at 12 p.m. and dinner at 1 p.m.

It is an opportunity for people who are alone on Christmas Day to enjoy an hour of entertainment and a meal. The meal includes the traditional turkey, three other meat choices, with all the trimmings including perogies and cabbage rolls.

The Ron Moses Christmas Dinner is open to everyone. In the past, it hosted those who have events other days during the holiday season but not on Christmas

Day, and people new to the community. The meal can be delivered to those working or those kept in their homes for medical reasons. Rides to the Senior’s Centre can also be arranged for those without transportation.

“Over the years, if I see a need I try to meet that need. The community is such a giving community, and their donations help to make it a success each year,” said organizer Lynda Moses.

This year’s Ron Moses Christmas Dinner is still in search of entertainers, volunteers to make meatballs, and delivery drivers.

The Holidays Students Host Rustic Western Christmas

Forty-six second year Student Managed Enterprise students hosted a unique Rustic One-Stop Pop-Up Shop with a western Christmas flair at the Lakeland College Recreation Centre on December 2, 3 and 4.

“We’ve only ever run this event once before, and never at the Christmas season and we have sold more than we had originally targeted so sales have been incredible,” said Student Managed Enterprise Instructor Robert Dixon.

“The vendors are all from across western Canada. We’ve got items priced from as low as $5 up to higher on some of our

furniture items. Our focus was on quality and unique items, and stuff that you wouldn’t find in just a regular store, this year. The great thing about a pop-up is that we are able to test the market in three days and that way we can get better every year at the products we bring in. We have found that our rustic furniture has been a big seller in this area,” said Dixon.

“We tried to focus on vendors from within the province of Alberta. Santa Pancake Breakfast

The Knights of Columbus, along with volunteers from the Vermilion Play Development were busy preparing break fast and c leaning t ables respectively at the Vermilion Elks Hall on November 27 for the annual Santa Pancake Breakfast.

Attendees enjoyed a full breakfast including pancakes, scrambled eggs, hash browns and sausage as they visited, while children had the opportunity to have their picture taken with Santa cour tesy of Greg Haslehurst Photography for the low price of $5.

“I have been doing this a few years now and really enjoy seeing the kids

excitement,” said Haslehurst.

Vermilion resident David Rein who was hired to represent Santa Claus for the last three years said he really enjoys playing Santa.

“Sometimes the children are afraid, but I think of ways to make them laugh and giggle.” said Rein.

A portion of the proceeds from the breakfast was donated to the Vermilion Play Development and was accepted

by Operation Manager, Vermilion Play Development Darla Snow.

The Knights of Columbus ser ves breakfast monthly on the third Sunday from September until April excluding December with the proceeds going to a different charity of choice each time.

The Elves Behind The Scenes At Santa’s Anonymous

Are you looking for a great way to give back or help out a local family in need this holiday season?

Santa’s Anonymous was inspired by a simple wish to see every child receive a new toy at Christmas. Throughout the years, volunteers from the community have worked together to make this wish come true, displaying the real spirit of Christmas and giving to others in need by offering a helping hand at Christmas time.

This year’s Santa Anonymous distribution day is Saturday, December 17th.

Chair of the Vermilion Santa’s Anonymous Clifford Rolheiser says the money coming in was less last year and that the demand for Santa’s Anonymous assistance had increased. We need more volunteers and donations now more than ever.

Pat Calyniuk has been a Santa’s Anonymous Screener since 1993.

“I determine who is eligible. I have the list with everyone’s name, and I coordinate where everything is going. How it works is people apply by filling out a form, they have a reference, they give us their information and request what they would like; for example a Timmy’s gift card or a new shirt,” said Calyniuk.

“There is a lot of confidentiality,” said Rolheiser. “We are careful to protect people’s identity; the drivers who deliver do not have people’s names only their addresses.

Last year we had 363 people (195 adults, 52 teenagers, 91 children and 25 babies). That was 106 Hampers in total delivered; (53 hampers went out in

Vermilion, 24 in Mannville, four hampers in Minburn, 20 hampers in Innisfree, one hamper in Islay and four hampers to Clandonald).

We experienced a big setback last year, the demand outnumbered the donations received, and we had to dig into out reserve funds. We had pre-purchased the food gift cards, and then we had a huge deficit of $9,000. We can’t afford to do that again. We were very fortunate in that we had a reserve carried forward from previous years to pay off the deficit.”

Calyniuk says she continues to donate her time to Santa’s Anonymous because of the stories of gratitude that come back from the drivers.

“The drivers are the only ones that meet with recipients. There is usually one or two heart-wrenching stories when the drivers come back,” said Calyniuk.

All of the toys, clothing, and food flow through “Santa’s Workshop” (Atco Gas warehouse), where volunteers assemble each hamper, wrap the gifts and prepare them for pickup or delivery ahead of the holidays. The attention to detail is crucial as volunteers prepare each hamper as if it were intended for members of their family.

“We check our lists twice and makes sure the correct items are in the boxes before delivery. We try to give every child one item off their wish list. Santa’s Anonymous costs about $18,000 - $20,000 per year to run, and we need the donations now more than ever,” said Calyniuk.

“Volunteers from the community raise money and donate toys. Volunteers from the Outreach School fill the children’s wish list boxes and the fire department and the Lion’s Club help with the delivery

of the toys every year,” said Calyniuk.

“Santa’s Anonymous runs as an independent project and all funds raised are kept separate from other Lion’s Projects.

It is with sadness that the family announces the passing of Eileen Young at the age of 90.

She is survived by her sons, Gary (Marilyn), and Ric (Joan); grandchildren, Sean, Carmen (Rob), Laurie (Paul); great-grandchildren, Preston, Eric, Nolan, Isaac; and sister, Mary Warring.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harold; long-term partner, Harris; and brother, Raymond. Big Buck Contest

Ninety-six hunters entered the Vermilion Gun Club’s ‘Big Buck Contest’ this year at the Vermilion Elk’s Hall on December 4.

Fifteen youth, and 81 adults entered in October before hunting, and keeping with tradition, they were scored on the first Sunday after the hunting season closed. Whitetail deer antlers from the four surrounding wildlife management units surrounding Vermilion were accepted.

Co-op Hardware started the contest years ago, and the Vermilion Gun club has taken it over for the last 6 years. Official scorer of the event was Ab England, from Lloydminster.

“I measure the inside spread at the greatest width, the outside rim, each point, and four circumferences on each side looking for symmetrical scores,” said England.

Antler sets were scored with the top three youth and top three adults receiving prizes. Raffles included a Ruger 22 calibre rifle and a knife that was donated

by Ed Storch.

“We’d like to thank everyone for coming out and joining the contest. It’s a great way to end the season with our fellow sportsmen: youth, ladies, and men,” said Big Buck Coordinator George Gerski.

From November 8 – 11, the Usenik family took four generations hunting near Debolt, Alberta which is just south of Grande Prairie. There was no snow and the weather was warm; even reaching 18 degrees Celsius one of the days.

November 25 was a day of learning for BTPS staff.

The entire support staff team assembled at Wainwright High School for a day of learning provided by the Learning Network. Their event opened with guest speaker, Dr. Jody Carrington, giving a motivational and informative presentation on, “The Power of the Relationship: How Instructional Assistants and Support Staff can change the world.”

On the same day, the teaching staff team members were busy working collaboratively to support student learning through our Teacher Effectiveness Support Teams (TES Teams). Being able to capitalize on the wisdom of others and work collaboratively in designing quality instruction for students is an important part of our success.

The Buffalo Trail School Division’s transportation department held a school bus safety poster contest. Congratulations to the following students for winning it: Chloe Fillion and Jenna Stewart from Grade 4 and

Some classr o o m n ew s includes: Kindergar ten learning about the wonderful world of spiders; grade ones learning about shades, mixing, and a variety of other concepts. They have been exploring the seasonal changes in fall and how people, animals, and plants change in the environment.

In Grade 2 science, they will begin their unit on Hot and Cold Temperature. At the end of this unit, the students will be building a device to keep an ice cube cold. The Grade 3 science unit is Building With a Variety of Materials..In this unit they are required to build a variety of objects that support objects; span gaps; serve as containers; and serve as models of particular living things, objects or buildings. Our Grade 4’s are working on Light and Shadow. Students can identify natural and man-made sources of light and will be doing some interesting experiments.

The Grade 5 class worked in groups in a Survival Reward Challenge. They had to separate a mixture containing five different materials and work individually to evaluate a plan and recommend improvements. The reward challenge activity was to separate a mixture of paper clips, salt, split peas and wood chips. If they can successfully separate the mixture, they can keep the salt and split peas to create a pot of soup, the wood chips for kindling and the paper clips to use as fishing hooks. The students were all successful!!

The Grade 6’s are very close to finishing their Trees and Forest unit. As a final project students will be creating a presentation on informing tourists about the trees in our region.

The Art Field Trip to the Edmonton Art Gallery of Alberta was a very engaging experience for 22 students from Grade 5 - 9 on Nov. 24. Students toured through different galleries experiencing different world views and engaging in different cultural perspectives. In the afternoon students spent time making their own Art Stories. They were lead through a number of different painting techniques and created their own prints of a story that inspired them.

All grades in VES were fortunate to attend a free Railway Safety and Awareness presentation on December 1. Constable Dean Solowan, from the CN Police Service, gave a tremendously impactful presentation (that included videos) on what to do and what not to do around trains and train tracks. He was backed by Operation Lifesaver, whose goal is to reduce collisions at highway/railway crossings as well as incidents resulting from trespassing.

Superintendent, Mr. Bob Allen, visited VES on the morning of Nov. 29. He met with some students from Grades 4 - 6 to discuss their views of student learning at VES; he toured classrooms, talking with students and staff; and he even played in a noon hour floor hockey game.

The Friends’ Committee has changed the dress up day on December 6 from Hats and Shades Day to Christmas Sweater Day. As well, on December 23, we will have pajama day (students may bring slippers, housecoats, pillow and blankets if they

wish). We will have hats and shades day in January.

On December 12, the VES 5 - 6 All-Stars floor hockey team will take on the teacher team during the noon recess. This is a longstanding tradition. We plan on continuing a more recent tradition that day, as well. For the past four years, we have staged a teddy bear toss during the student-teacher game. Students brought stuffed animals to donate to children in need, and tossed them into the middle of the gym when the first student goal was scored. We ended up with a great example of VES generosity amidst all the fun of the game. We will do the same this year, with all stuffies donated to the local Santa’s Anonymous.

Louise Phipps with Alberta Farm Safet y was in our school on Thursday, November 24 for our annual farm safety presentation. Grades Kindergarten to six all participated. Each grade level focused on a different safety objective as well as a review of safety tips from previous years. The following topics were covered: one seat- one rider (KG), bystander run-ver (Gr.1), rural drowning risks ( Gr. 2), hearing loss on the farm (Gr. 3), making safe choices (Gr. 4), risks of riding with speed (Gr. 5), and risks of riding quads (Gr. 6). Excellent safety rules were learned by all grade levels!

St. Jerome’s will be hosting the Scholastic Book Fair December 7 to 12. This will be a great time to do some Christmas shopping and get some nice gifts for under the tree. The Book Fair will be open to students at lunchtime (12:05 - 12:32) on December 7, 8, 9 and 12 in the library.

Family Night will run Thursday, December 8 from 3:30 - 7 p.m. also at the library.

Parents/Students can enter to win $25 to buy books for themselves, and $25 for their teacher. There will be a raffle to win the posters on display. We will have hot chocolate and Christmas cookies to enjoy while you shop, and candy canes for the kids.

Mrs. Clark and Mrs. Wilkinson’s tourism class celebrated the end of their module, The Food Sector, by holding a formal dinner on Thursday, November 24.

Students were able to put their new skills in formal dinner settings and etiquette into practice. It was a wonderful afternoon of authentic learning. Thank you to everyone who supplied food, drinks, and materials.

On Thursday, December 1 students and staff gathered in the gym to for the annual Fall Sports Celebration where we honour all athletes who have participated in sports during the fall term. After the student body had participated in a variety of cheers along with our Spartan Mascot, MCs Breanna Maughan, and Jesse Rogan introduced the various sports team. The Jr. and Sr. High Golf and Cross Country Teams were introduced followed by the St.

Jerome students who played with the J.R. Robson Marauder Football team. Then the 15 Jr. and Sr. Girls and Boys Volleyball teams were introduced to loud cheers from the students and staff. Congratulations to all the students who have represented St. Jerome’s with strength, determination, and sportsmanship throughout the season.

The celebration ended with the Sr. Girls Basketball team introduced as they hosted their home tournament this past weekend.

Basketball season has started at St. Jerome’s. Our Jr. High Boys and Girls started off their seasons playing Marwayne.

Both teams played with great spirit and determination winning their season openers. Congratulations to a terrific start!

Students showed up in very unusual outfits on Tuesday, November 29, as they participated in “Why, is This in the Closet Day?” The object was to gather all the random items of clothing from all the closets in your house, and make a ridiculous outfit from them! It was wonderful to see the unique items worn on that day.

High School students gained Spirit points for participating in this event.

Wednesday, November 30 was a very busy day for the Grade 12 students as they had Graduation pictures and the large Mom’s Pantry arrived for students to organize and deliver. The Grad Class of 2017 would like to thank everyone who supported their Mom’s Pantry Fundraiser this year.

St. Jerome's Basketball Starts The St. Jerome's Sr. Girls Spartans Basketball Team kicked off their season this year at their home tournament. The girls had a strong weekend and finished 3rd place. The girls beat Kitscoty 67 - 23 on Friday to start the tournament off. Their second game saw them face a tough foe in the Ryley Rebels. The game was close all the way through and the girls game up short as they lost 49 - 47. The girls battled back in their final game and beat Marwayne 47 - 26. The girls next tournament is December 9 and 10 in St. Paul.

This past weekend saw the Elk Point Elks steal a 3-1 win over the Vermilion Rock in Elk Point on December 2.
