On October 31, creative costumes could be seen throughout Vermilion in the spirit of Halloween.

Ve r m i l i o n El e m e n t a r y S c h o o l ’s gymnasium was filled with staff and students who celebrated with a costume parade. The parade was followed by the finale of the second ‘We Scare Hunger’

food drive. The ‘Me To We Club’ helped organize the food drive, and it was again partnered by Webb’s Ford. VES classes donated nearly 1,000 items to the Vermilion Food Bank.

St. Jerome’s School also held a costume parade for Grades 1 - 5 students on October 31. The parade was followed by a Halloween Dance and the students had a blast dancing to seasonal themed

music and acting out their costume roles.

Junior and Senior High students at J.R. Robson School were thrilled to take part in Halloween activities on October 31. Dressed in elaborate costumes, students enjoyed popcorn, a photo backdrop, ping pong, mummy wrapping, and playing ‘pin the wart on the witch.’

VES Students Observe Baby Development

The students of VES observed the growth and development of Baby Rian during a Roots of Empathy class on November 1.

Roots of Empathy (ROE) is an evidencebased classroom program that has shown significant effect in reducing levels of aggression and bullying among school children while raising social/emotional competence and increasing empathy.

V ES s t u d e n t s s a n g s o n g s a n d commented that baby Rian had grown in size and got more hair since they had seen her last. They observed her movements and noted that she was able to roll over

and listened to her feedback to sound and movement. “Our program reaches elementary school children from Kindergarten to Grade 8,� said VES Roots of Empathy Coordinator Sharleen Moses. “I have two classes with two Roots of Empathy Families; Aaron and Bailey Snelgrove with baby Elle, who was born on July 6th, 2016, and Matt and Kim Walsh with baby Rian, who was born on July 18, 2016.

The baby visits approximately every three weeks and the program is split into nine themes. For each theme there are three lessons. The first lesson is a class where I introduce the theme and for the second class the family and baby visit. In watch-

ing baby we solidify the lessons I introduced earlier. In the third class I teach and summarize the theme,� explained Moses. “The children predict and cheer as their ROE baby reaches the ‘developmental milestones’ of the first year: She can roll over! She got her first tooth! She can sit up!

She can crawl!’ I coach children to observe the baby and read the cues the baby gives as to how the baby is feeling: ‘Is the baby happy or sad?’ ‘How can you tell?’ And we use this discussion as a lever for the children to talk about their own emotions and to understand how their classmates feel: ‘Do you smile when you’re happy?’ ‘How can you tell if your friend is happy?’ Being able to understand how other people are feeling is called empathy.�

The program at VES is funded through grants received from the Town of Vermilion

FCSS and the County of Vermilion FCSS. Founder and President of Roots of Empathy Mary Gordon said she believes that education is the most effective peacebuilding institution in the land and that “Our schools serve as our Ministry of Peace.�

ROE curriculum aims to address the affective side of education, but the activities have many links to the classroom curriculum. “Students can use math skills to calculate and chart the baby’s weight and measurements. Literature can be used as a way to open the door to feelings. The discussion and reflection that follows builds empathy.

Art can play a large role as children paint their inner feelings which they cannot say with words. Music and songs can stir powerful feelings. It speaks to everyone regardless of language or culture and builds solidarity,� said Moses.

New Recycling Curbside Collection Program To Begin January 2017

Council for the Town of Vermilion passed a motion giving the green light to a new Recycling Curbside Collection Program at a meeting on November 1.

Council accepted the proposal from Quik Pick Waste Disposal for a bi-weekly blue bag recycling curbside collection for a three-year contract with an option to extend; as their disposal was deemed ‘most advantageous for the Town of Vermilion mainly due to the lack of processing cost implemented by their company.’

Three contractor proposals were submitted for both options - the blue bag or a 95-gallon blue bin that would be available to each resident. Included in the proposals was an option for commercial businesses that would like to participate in the program.

Council discussed the pros and cons regarding the blue bag versus the bins.

Two of the cons identified was that rodents could access the blue bags if food or waste was left in them, as well as there is an additional cost for the resident purchasing the blue bags.

On the blue bin option, the only down-

fall noted was residents would have up to three bins at their household for storage - one for waste, one for organics and one for recycling. The cost of the blue bin was more expensive than the blue bag option on the resident’s monthly recycling bill.

Director for Transportation and Utilities Derek Young said starting in January everyone will be using the blue bag for recycling.

Overall, the prices were favourable for the pickup and processing of residential and commercial recycling. The prices range from $2.12/month to $4.00/month on the residential side for the blue bag.

Council selected the blue bag option method of recycling for the curbside collection of recyclables.

“Homeowners will have to have a blue bag and set it out on the identified date,” explained Young.

“Right now there are large dumpsters for cardboard at commercial locations throughout town; we are aiming to keep those, and every resident will have a blue bag, which will be purchased at grocery stores.

Next year we will be implementing curbside collection for garbage and

organics. We will then take all the dumpsters out of the allies, so going forward everyone in town will have the roll out garbage bins.

We are targeting that the changeover will take place in August 2017. The new bins will be provided by the Town of Vermilion, and they will be free of charge.

The green bin will be used for organics; the black bin will be for garbage, and the blue bag will be used for recycling.

The primar y focus is to encour-

age recycling and keep garbage out of the landfill. There will also be another component of developing a program to make the public aware of these changes, and there will be a lot more information coming from the Town about the changeover.

Vermilion is behind a little on recycling, and the model is definitely not new. More information will be provided for residents before January, and there will be notices sent out,” explained Young.

Vermilion Public Library Basement Renovations Complete Marie Conboy Reporter

The Library basement renovations which began construction last June have been completed.

“We are excited and happy with the work. It is great that it is finally complete. I remember when I first arrived in Vermilion in 2010 we said we needed basement renovations and finally, almost seven years later, our renovations are complete,” said Library Manager Stuart Pauls.

“There is going to be a lot more versatile space. What we are really hoping for is the community to view this space as a great community spot where they can gather for meetings or events. It is important for us to provide this place downtown, in a central location and it will be interesting to see what kind of niche that fills. It will also be available to groups and organizations who wish to book the space,” said Pauls.

Hammertime Contracting were responsible for the renovation project and they subcontracted work out to local contractors in the Vermilion area. “The newly finished renovations cost roughly $130,000, with $15,000 funded by the Government of Alberta, the Town of Vermilion provided $35,000 and the rest of the funds needed came from the Library Board Reserves,” added Pauls.

Hypnosis More Than Entertainment

This creates an ‘unsuccessful’ hypnosis experience and the misconception of not being able to be hypnotized. Many hypnotists who have insufficient training are not aware of these differences. Everyone can be hypnotized, if they want to be!

3. I may never wake up. Hypnosis is simply a relaxed state and a focused attention. Most people are not aware that they go in and out of a state of hypnosis all day long! Hypnosis can be scientifically measured by our brainwaves. Every 90 minutes or so, our brainwaves oscillate to make us very aware of our surroundings and alert then flows into more of a daydream or distracted frame of mind. This daydream state is a state of hypnosis. It is

impossible to be stuck in a hypnotic state, therefore because our brainwaves naturally bring us back to being consciously aware.

4. Hypnosis is simply for entertainment.

While I sit here in my little personal bubble and live in a peaceful country where I have never p e r s o n a l l y ex p e rienced a war on my homeland, I can’t relate to families of war who are affected each and every day. I do, however, feel the need to join with my community on Remembrance Day to remember the fallen and the men and women who currently serve in our military during times of war, conflict and peace-keeping missions.

Every day you hear and read in the news about the conflicts in other countries, both Iraq wars, 9/11, the war on

terrorism in Afghanistan and now the latest ISIS terrorist group.

I can’t begin to imagine the worry and heartache the families and friends of our military have to face knowing their loved one may not return, the sadness and emotions they must feel when they are informed their loved one won’t be returning home, at least not alive.

Then I must think about the effects of war on the men and women who serve, the everlasting memories and trauma they see on a regular basis during the conflict and still after they have left the war. I sit here and wonder what it would be like to walk a mile in their shoes, to see what they see, to feel what they feel, the knowing that at any moment they may have to take another person’s life even though it is necessary to keep themselves alive. The

mental and physical torture each member of our military has to endure just so I can sit here and speak my mind, walk peacefully down the street and not have to be worried each day about my security and freedoms.

I know some people will say it was their choice, they chose the military life, they gave the worry to their families, but it is the most selfless act a person can give.

They did choose this life, and they chose it to help protect each and every one of us, they chose it so we can have all the freedoms we have in this country.

Do they deser ve our respect and remembrance on November 11? Absolutely. My Mom lost a brother to the Second World War, is that what makes me feel as though we should hold this day with the utmost of respect? No, not really

Dear Editor, I am proud to be part of Operation Legacy, in which members and graduates of The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program pass on the Remembrance message to the younger generation. As Remembrance Day is fast approaching, I would like to pay special

tribute to all men and women who have served in Canada’s military, and especially those who lost a limb or limbs in war.

I was born missing my right leg above the knee, and have learned to overcome this challenge thanks to programs put in place by amputee veterans of The War Amps.

I am thankful for war amputee veter-

ans because they have helped pave the way for amputees in Canada. Because of them, the limbs we use today are much more sophisticated and adapted to our daily needs and activities. Even more importantly they fought for our country and our freedom. I am thankful for all they have done to make sure Canada remains a peaceful country.

as I never personally knew my Uncle. Do I have to go out and attend all the ceremonies to show my respect and gratitude?

No, not really. Remembrance Day is just that, a day to take the time to remember and say thank you. If you wish to attend a ceremony to show your gratitude to the fallen and the members serving currently, there will be a Remembrance Day service held at the Cenotaph at 10:30 a.m. with the parade starting at 10:45 a.m. Also, the Poppy Campaign is underway, and all donations made to the campaign go back into the community to help Veterans and their families in need of assistance.

Stand tall shoulder to shoulder and show our Veterans that we are so very thankful for their service for our country and lets’ remember the men and women who have lost their lives protecting us.

On Remembrance Day, please take a moment to remember those who have and continue to serve. We commemorate their lives and share their stories so that their sacrifices will never be forgotten.

Open Letter To The Eastalta Co-op General Manager And The Board Of Directors

Dear Editor I attended the meeting on Oct 25 to see what the new proposal to join St. Paul Co-op was all about. During the meeting we were asked to submit questions, to which I did. The following was my question. “Why isn’t the price for fuel the same in Wainwright and Vermilion? Quite often Wainwright is a few cents cheaper per litre than Vermilion and as of today St. Paul is 5 cents per litre cheaper than Vermilion. Can we expect all the fuel prices to be the same in the new Cornerstone Co-op region or does Vermilion subsidize the lower priced regions?” The question was not read as written but “paraphrased” by our GM with no mention of the 5 cents per litre cheaper. His answer was “We will remain competitive in those areas”. What does that

mean? Well I can assume Vermilion customers will continue to pay more to subsidize the lower priced areas but we all get the same patronage rebate percentage. Does that seem fair?

The Chamber of Commerce and Ve r m i l i o n b u s i n e s s h av e w o r k e d hard to promote shopping locally. It appears the gas retailers work against that principal. When have you heard that Vermilion has the lowest gas in the area? Probably never. Now think of Wainwright, Vegreville, Lloydminster or St. Paul. People in Vermilion are tired of getting hosed at the pumps and travelling outside of town to get cheaper groceries and fuel. Maybe there isn’t a great saving but they have had a day out and fought back against the fuel cartel.

I cannot remember when Franklin wrote his first story in The Vermilion Voice, but it was a long time ago. He only wrote the one, then every time I saw him I would ask, “When are you going to write more stories for our paper?” I bugged him and bugged him.

Holding The Torch

weight it had until last week…what that really meant.

Not just the name itself but a mantle of responsibility in the world going forward.

It’s my turn now…I have to step up to the plate, hold the torch; to lead the way.

I’ve lived a different life than Dad did but it spans the countryside there where I grew up and still spend time in.

Tolland is the place I love best in the world. I worked and travelled all over Alberta in my 20’s making highways, so I know this province’s small towns and back roads probably better than most.

I have seen it from the air from Dad’s

little Taylorcraft.

I was usually Dad’s navigator too… country or city, by car or by plane, map in hand…spotting.

But with the hustle and bustle of b e i n g n ear t h e c i t y i n Ar d r o s s an, office work, technology, three monitor screens in my face typing…a world Dad never joined. I know…I tried.

I still come back to Vermilion often though because family is there, I know people there, I still hunt, I still drive around the roads out there I know so well. It is where my roots are; everything there is so familiar.

So I’m part in both those worlds…but never completely in either.

Missing Franklin

Finally, one day he came in and decided he would try, but wasn’t sure what he would write about. I told him to ‘Just tell your stories as you remember them and people will love them.’

happy that he did. Franklin continued to write his tales with the same great results.

He was so thank ful that I had bugged him to write again, I do not know how many hundreds of times he has thanked me - too many to count.

My Grade 12 English teacher Linda Reynolds at J.R. Robson once wrote on one of my marked papers that I had a gift for writing, but until now I never really thought about what that meant either. I spend all my time at work programming code, reviewing scripts, or writing technical documents; it isn’t quite the same background.

Dad always fostered the view to read and understand what was going on in the world, though.

And opinions? Dad and I sure shared views on some subjects…people call me ‘old school.’ A lot which came from being around Dad and Mom I am quite certain.

On October 24th,2016 Franklin Wolters’ second last article entitled ‘On Being Thankful’ was printed in the Voice. Six days later, on October 30th, as he prepared to play music, he left this world. Yes, it was sudden and I, for one, am not quite able, nor am I ready, to believe that the bell on the door to my shop will never again clang announcing his arrival. He did leave though doing something he loved; something that brought him great joy.

Larger than life and with a heart of gold this man became my dear friend when he saw my shop and me and decided he had to ‘meet this lady, she looks interesting’. He brought me a coffee cup filled with fresh flowers and then sold me one of his books. I still laugh about that as he was a consummate salesman and

shamelessly promoted himself with everyone he met.

Rightfully so! Franklin was an accomplished and talented man. He was an adventurous self-described old cowboy who, as he said, ‘didn’t much like horses’ but whose favorite outfit was a white shirt, bolo tie, black jeans and leather vest topped off with his black Stetson.

All spiffed up he was definitely a dapper picture of an old cowboy. He wore this to play his music and to him there was only one kind of music – country. Not just any kind of country mind you, only old time and gospel country and you would have an argument on your hands if you tried to convince him otherwise.

He did everything with such delight and he was very generous with his loving comments and charming in a way that could boost you right out of a bad mood.

He even skunked my husband and me when we went ice fishing, seeming to charm the fish right out of water with his smile.

He was also, as I have often heard; an accomplished pilot who let not much stand in the way of taking to the sky when he had a mind to. Oh yes! He was a risk taker and as stubborn as an ornery mule sometimes. Nothing much stood in his way when he had a mind to do something. And do things he did!!

Getting older never stopped this man.

Franklin wrote a column each week for this paper and has done so for several years; he self-published a book titled Memories of Life on the Grizzly Bear Coulee, a place that he held close to his heart; he played music for jamborees and senior dances; he recorded three CDs of his music and spent many an

hour travelling around visiting people he loved and meeting new people.

His last ar ticle demonstrates so beautifully that though life brought its challenges, Franklin was able to look through them and find in them the gem of gratitude. He taught me a lot about that and showed me an appreciation for the person I am that was not matched by too many people. This was one of his biggest gifts to us all; unconditional positive regard.

Franklin will remain a dear friend and mentor. He may be gone but his spirit remains for me and for many others a gift we can hold onto forever. Each time the bell on my shop door rings announcing someone’s arrival and I ask them how they are, I will hear his warm chuckle and the words ‘well I didn’t check too close but I think I’m okay’.

Remembering Frankie

How many times did he say to one of us “it’s........haven’t you heard of that word?”

For me, no I probably hadn’t because many of his writings were about farming and I am just not a farm girl. Or we would say, “Yes I have heard of that word, but that is not what it looked like when you wrote it. LOL” Ahhh the joys of his penmanship.

Frankie was always very dedicated to his writings; after dropping off a column he knew it would usually only take us a day or so to get the time to sit and type it up for him, and you could be guaranteed the next day he was here to check it over.

Marie, one of our reporters remembers a perfect example of Frankie’s dedication to his writing. I was on vacation, and Frankie had come in to drop off his column and Marie would be the one to type it for him that week; needless to say she couldn’t decipher his writing so she called him up and asked him if he

could come and read the article to her?

Frankie being Frankie said “Sure, I will be right there.” and within 10 minutes Frankie was walking through the door eager to read her his story. Marie recalls the passion that exhumed from him as he read the story; his eyes would fill up with tears it meant so much to him.

Frankie was a man who often thought of others before himself, he loved bringing us flowers and maybe it made him feel good as well. During the summer months Frankie would show up with flowers he had picked and they were always in a takeout coffee mug. They certainly brightened up our day and made us feel special.

Each time the door at the office opens we expect him to walk through it, he will be missed greatly. We will miss his laughter, his storytelling, and his kind and compassionate ways, thank you Frankie for bringing joy to our office. We will always remember and miss you.

It is with a heavy heart I sit here today and remember Frankie Wolters a member of our Vermilion Voice who passed away suddenly on October 30th.

I met Frankie 11 years ago when I first moved to Vermilion and worked at Sammy’s Restaurant. Frankie came in pretty much every day. He always had a smile and was always very friendly.

Frankie enjoyed sitting and having a good ole yarn. When it was slow at the restaurant He would tell me stories of when he was a boy, how he very much enjoyed flying when he was younger and what it was like growing up back in the ‘old days.’ Frankie had a huge love of music; I believe music was equal to his love of flying, maybe even more. He would always tell me/us what a wonderful time he had playing at a Jamboree or how it brought him happiness to play at an ‘Old Folks’ home. He was so grateful

November is recognized as ”Family Violence Prevention month.” Trauma comes to families and homes where there is family violence, and each member is traumatized.

When we think of trauma there are also many other causes for one to feel traumatized; sudden death, robberies, homicide, flood or fire, abuses, be it physical, verbal, mental or sexual assault. Feeling traumatized, helpless is the initial feeling, and often during that time one tries to process individually, on their own. What is out of our control, has happened leaving a person feeling vulnerable. Trauma af fec ts the whole being; mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.

Frankie wrote a weekly column for our paper and was always eager to do so; I never had to go looking for his material that’s for sure! Each week Frankie would come through the door excited to drop off his column to us; he often explained why he chose to write what he wrote and often told us “I woke up last night and the story idea just came to me, so I had to write it down.” Frankie’s penmanship was sometimes a little to be desired, LOL, as he would write it quickly to get all of his thoughts on the paper. Many times as either myself or another staff member would type his words we would have to get someone else to help us try and figure out what a word was. Sue was a pro; she could usually figure it out and if not we would put an empty line where the word would have been until Frankie

Trauma - Now What?

Though it appears that one is coping well and the personal feeling is that of coping while the undercurrent of trauma is being felt.

Each person is uniquely different (wired), and copes with trauma and stress dif ferently, some find g oo d coping skills while others struggle.

The impact of trauma affects the total person whether it is visible or not.

If you have experienced trauma, do a mental check as to how you are coping. Symptoms could be feeling edgy, hyper vigilant, easy star tled, tired, depressed, overactive, experiencing illnesses, highly emotion, anger, eating too much or too little, sleeping too much or too little, missing work, or suicidal thoughts. Getting control back could be by finding a

counselor you are comfor table with and who knows how to care for someone with PTSD, a support group, your doctor, exercise and check your diet.

PTSD is a reality for those who experience trauma and is not only experienced by frontline workers, but whenever a person experiences a sudden, dramatic change in their lives, PTSD is an experienced result. For most, it is processed, relatively quickly, with the help of support people while for others it may be a longer journey and require reaching out for the help of a therapist and support. Remember there is no shame in seeking help and support at this time when Trauma visits your home.

I just want to thank everyone at the Voice who gave my Dad the opportunity to share his stories each week in your paper. I heard so many people share stories over this week, including many that said the first thing they did opening the paper was read Dad's column because they enjoyed it. We talked about the subjects of his upcoming columns quite often...and at least when I got mentioned thankfully he let me know ahead of time. I would certainly thank all his readers for him...he shared with me how he felt so grateful that what he wrote meant something to them.

The news often came as a telegram beginning with: “We deeply regret to inform you…” The ones that did come home were never the same, haunted by the memories of war. Those that survived would sometimes pull out their worn telegraph, and re-read the fate of their son or brother and then carefully refold it and return it to its special box. It was a time of heart break on an in-imaginable scale. When I think of all the great gifts they have given me, and the high cost they have paid, I am moved to deep gratitude.

Poppy Seed Cake 1/3 cup poppy seeds 1/2 cup hot water 1/2 cup butter 3/4 cup sugar 3 eggs

Zest of one lemon 3 tablespoons lemons juice 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 cup unbleached flour Put the poppy seeds in a small bowl and cover with hot water and soak for 30 minutes. Cream the butter and the sugar together using an electric mix master.

Beat in the eggs, zest and lemon juice.

Add the flour and the baking soda and baking powder and the beat the mixture.

Add the poppy seeds and their water and beat them into the cake batter.

Bake in a buttered 8X8 cake pan at 350 degrees for approximately 30 minutes.

Ice with a vanilla butter cream frosting or a cream cheese frosting.

Valley Lodge Construction Due To Commence March 2017

The Vermilion Valley Lodge held an open house to discuss their construction project plans with the public on November 4. “ We h ave b e e n w o r k i n g o n t h e architectural designs for the last three months, and we aim to have all of the engineer drawings complete just before Christmas and looking to tender in January. Construction will be starting in March. Our project scale is a replacement of 50 units on site and it was an important and logistical challenge not to move residents off site,” said Valley Lodge Architect Cory Leniuk. “ It is a new modern facilit y. The accessibility of the whole facility will be greatly increased. We have observed a growing demand for senior’s accommodation all across the province,” added Leniuk.

Valley Lodge CAO Sheri Heller said that she is excited that plans are finally underway. “ We are excited to make the changes for the future for the next 50 years. We need it, the original building was built in the 1960s, and it is really outdated, some of the rooms have halfbaths and don’t have the proper washing facilities. It is time now to look after the new generation of people we have,” said Heller. “ It is a huge project costing $12.25 million. If all runs according to the schedule, we are looking at being fully completed by June/July 2018. We are losing 50 rooms in what we are tearing down, and we are building 50 new rooms. We will have 84 rooms when all of the construction is finished in 2018.”

Rotary-Interact Shelter Box Fundraiser

Rotary and Interact Club members set up a Shelter Box outside Christina’s Home Furnishings in Vermilion on November 5.

“Our goal is to raise $1,200 to purchase a Shelter Box to send somewhere in need,” said Kadin Morritt.

The Rotary Club is one of the Shelter Box Program’s largest supporters. Shelter Boxes can provide families of eight a place to live while their homes are being rebuilt after natural disasters. They come supplied with cooking tools and water purification tablets.

“Some Shelter Boxes have been lived in for up to five years. We were appreciative of good weather and the donations that we received,” said Rotarian Kirby Whitlock.

The Interact Club is a Rotary sponsored youth service club for ages 12 - 18, and is always open to new members.

On October 25 and 26, 2016, Vermilion Play Development visited the seniors at Vermilion Valley Lodge. The children were dressed up in their Halloween costumes and sang Halloween On October 31, some St. Jerome’s Elementary students enjoyed dancing as a way to let out songs. The children then had a costume parade and then handed out treats to all the seniors. all of their Halloween excitement.

A Flower, A Poem, A Campaign R e m e m b r a n c e D ay o n N o v e m b e r 11 commemorates the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of the year 1918. This is when the Armistice was signed and is also the date marking the official end of the First World War. To commemorate this day, you are invited to participate in the annual Poppy Campaign, the Royal Canadian Legion’s main source of fundraising, which allows this organization to continue its work with veterans in need.

Nowadays, Remembrance Day includes all wars that have occurred since the Great War. Indeed, there has not been a single day since 1918 that has not been marked by a war or armed conflict somewhere on this planet. So, to put an end to all wars, people across the country wear poppies in their lapels and decorate war memorials with wreaths and bunches

of poppies on November 11.

Why poppies? Because this red flower recalls the famous poem “In Flanders Fields”, written by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae during the First World War. This is the most frequently read and quoted poem about war.

It is the mention of poppies in the first and last verses that has turned this flower into an emblem of remembrance and a symbol of new growth in the devastation left by war.

We must all remember the terrible toll wrought by the First World War: the death of 16.5 million people, including 9.7 million military personnel. The Second World War, the bloodiest conflict in our history, saw the deaths of 60 million souls, one third of which were mili­tary personnel. A Place Of Reflection During the month of November many ­ ana­d ians, veterans, war widows, and C family members take part in annual pilgrimages to the fields of battle abroad. Of course, this custom does not often include the general public, but it is still possible to perpetuate this tradition in a tangible way by visiting one of the war memorials in your area.

There are more than 6,600 memorials across Canada commemorating veterans and those who lost their lives. On November 11, Remembrance Day, why not take your family to a park or cemetery to visit a war memorial? Make the most of this moment to teach the younger gene­r ation about the importance of honouring those who sacrificed their lives for the freedoms we enjoy today.

This is also a marvellous opportunity to teach your children more about the work carried out by historical societies in communities across the country. Indeed, it is these societies who often help to pass on this heritage to those Canadians willing to listen. Your local historical society will be able to share literature and maybe even personal stories about the people from your town who went away to fight.

The Canadian government has developed programs to ensure that the cenotaphs and other monuments erected to the memory of those who lost their lives are maintained in an appropriate manner and that military events comprise all the suitable pomp ceremony. These programs also aim to help communi­ties organize moments of silence in honour of fallen soldiers, a central feature of any Re­mem­brance Day ceremony.

Mothers should negotiate between nations.

The mothers of the fighting countries would agree: stop this killing now. Stop it now.

A Remembrance Day service will be held at the Cenotaph at 10:30 a.m. with the parade starting at 10:45 a.m. Also, the Poppy Campaign is underway, and all donations made to the campaign go back into the community to help Veterans and their families in need of assistance.

The South African War from 1899 to 1902 marked Canada’s first official dispatch of troops to an overseas war.

It would not be the last time.

One hundred years ago the Battle of the Somme began on the morning of July 1, 1916. This is a particularly horrific date in history for families from Newfoundland. Of the 800 1st Newfoundland Regiment who went into battle that morning only 68 answered to roll call the following day.

On April 9, 1917 the Battle of Vimy Ridge began. It was the first time all four divisions of the Canadian Corps fought together as one formation. The battle

us today as it did then. The sacrifices of the many so long ago, and now in present day, are not and, should not, ever be forgotten.

Think about that for a moment. It is actually a staggering number, especially for a young nation with a population of only 8 million. One out of every 12 Canadians served in World War l.

He ser ved as a Private with the Calgary Highlanders in World War II as part of the 2 nd Canadian Infantr y Division, the regiment l a n d e d i n Fr a n c e J u l y 6, 1944, one month after the D-Day Normandy invasion and fought in Nor th West Europe to the war’s end on French soil.

Private Beatty was killed in action on July 25, 1944 during Operation Spring as two Canadian infantry divisions attacked five German

Panzer divisions which were defending Verrieres Ridge in an attempt to prevent an Allied breakthrough towards Paris and Seine River.

He was buried at Bretteville -Sur- Laize, Canadian W a r C e m e t e r y, F r a n c e .

There are 2,793 Canadian soldiers buried in the cemetery, 91 of them are unknown.

John was the son of Estelle Beatty; husband of Nancy Beatty of Vermilion.

John David Beatty’s son also named John David B e a t t y, t o l d t h e s t o r y o f how his mother was pregnant with him when she got the news that her husband would never return.

Beat t y never met his father. Years later he would

travel to France and search for his father’s grave until he found it.

“He was in action for 21 days before he died. It was a tremendous attack that took place on Verrieres Ridge.

They suffered horrific tragedies; there were 320 men killed and wounded that day.

The Highlanders lost 172, and my father was one of them. I had two older sisters, and my mother was expecting me at the time. I have been to his grave twice. It really pulled at the hear tstrings. It is very sad. He is buried beside a young kid from Nova Scotia, who was only 19 - years - old when he was killed. He liked to write poetry, and I have a poem

that was written to me, his unborn child. He suspected my mother was pregnant and guessed that I would be a boy. It really tears your heart to read it,” said Beatty.

An excerpt from John David Beatty’s poem: “Pattering footsteps in the hall Then “Daddy’s home” a merry call A pride and joy to any man With joyous anticipation, I think of when he’ll walk Then I imagine all his boyhood and the joy he’ll be to me Things I can almost see His adult course to run I’ll point with pride and tell the world there goes a man, …… my son.”

When battalions disbanded after W WI, f l ag s , a sy m b o l of t h e u n i t or regiment one belonged to, were distributed, blessed and laid up in churches for safe keeping. The Anglican church was prominent in Vermilion in the early 1900’s, and many men enlisted from the surrounding area.

“The colours are a rallying point for all those who have served,” said Gordon Hills C.D. Displaying the Overseas Battalion 151st Canadian Expeditionary Force from 1914-1918, a flag from the St. Savior’s Anglican Church was loaned to Robert Snelgrove on November 3, 2016.

to uncover much of the journey of their Great - Uncle, WWI Veteran, Thomas Alban Snelgrove. “ Yo u c a n’ t r e m e m b er w h at yo u don’t know,” said Robert Snelgrove.

In an effor t to find a group of 44 missing soldiers, Canadian Historian, Norm Christie featured the Snelgrove family in a film documentary that will air on the Histor y Channel in the spring of 2017.

The film will show the Snelgrove fam ily l o c at in g a c re st c ar ve d by Thomas Alban Snelgrove in the Bentata Cave, before his death on April 9, 1917. A replica of his crest is set to travel across Canada with a group of others as part of the 100 th Anniver sar y of the Bat tle of Vimy Ridge.

“Just hours before the 5:30 a.m.

Easter Monday launch in 1917 for the Bat tle of Vimy Ridge, an Anglican Easter Sunday service was held in the Bentata Cave in France, as a drawing of the service still decorates the cave’s wall,” said Robert Snelgrove.

“There were a lot of maple leaves in that cave. It showed the grand scale of National pride. I suggest not taking our freedom for granted and letting it live on in our children so that it is not forgotten,” said Melissa Guenthner.

Success came at great cost, and veterans with gut-wrenching stories to tell of their time spent in the muddy trenches, trudging through wire and ammo, should not be forgotten. Because of the brave men and women that came before us; today all Canadians can identify with the freedom found in the maple leaf flag.

“Now knowing so much more about our Veteran relative, we can remember and appreciate the sacrifice on a much deeper level. Our family is appreciative of the Church taking care of the flag and are grateful to have such a meaningful heirloom left in the community,” said Robert Snelgrove.

9, 1939-1945 when the war ended.

The Germans used Denmark as a recuperation place for their weary troops from the front line. The recuperation period was usually one month. John’s vivid memories from that time period include the following.

First he remembers 1944, and the Allied bombers flying over Denmark at night and down into Europe to bomb the German cities. He called it, ‘thunder in the sky’. Sixty or 70 bombers in two or three waves would pass overhead. The Danish people had to keep all windows covered up at night to confuse the Allies. A 10 p.m. curfew for citizens was upheld during the war. If the Germans had successfully damaged an Allied aircraft, the pilot dropped down flares to light up the whole region so they could drop their bombs and fly home safely.

A second memory is the absence of coffee, chocolate and fruits for five years, while butter, sugar and everything else was rationed. John’s family were lucky to have a farm. The Germans would buy eggs, and bacon from the farms, amongst other things.

During the last six months of the war Denmark was full of German

troops as the German army had been pushed back by the Allies. There was no school. The Germans occupied the schools from winter to spring that year to house their soldiers. John had attended a newer school which became used for cooking. There were always manoeuvres and recruitment going on.

John also remembers D-Day. When the war ended people were dancing in the streets. He recalls Field Marshall Montgomery and President Dwight D. Eisenhower driving through the streets of Copenhagen and waving to people.

John’s dad had been born just over the border from Germany. His father had gone to a German school and was later called up to serve in the German army in WWI. Thus his father could speak German and communicate well with the occupying Germans.

After the war the Americans established a base in Greenland. John served as a Danish soldier for one and a half years in this army. This post-war army had been set up to ensure that Denmark would be ready if there was ever another invasion.

John Jorgensen came from

Denmark to Vermilion in 1961. He worked at Jim Barr’s dairy farm near Vermilion as he had an agricultural degree from Denmark.

He met Nita Clark at the local bowling alley in Vermilion. Nita is the sister of Trevor Clark and Eunice Davis.

John married Nita in 1967.

He worked at Lakeland College, Vermilion in the Dairy section for 25 years from 1971-1996. He saw many students pass through Lakeland’s doors over the years.

The Battle Of The Somme Submitted

On July 1, 2016 Hilda Bell was in Northern Ireland. She attended the centenary events for the Battle of the Somme. The Battle of the Somme on July 1, 1916 was one of the largest and bloodiest battles of the First World War in France. It is remembered as one of the most tragic episodes in human

history. 19,240 British soldiers were killed and nearly twice that number were wounded, giving a total of 57,470 casualties. Many of the soldiers were members of the 36th Ulster Division and lived in County Down, N. Ireland. Hilda’s grandfather, George Robinson died at the Somme at age 34. He left behind 4 children and one on the way.

Hilda laid a wreath at the Bangor cenotaph (her grandfather’s home town), and her sister laid one at the Belfast Cenotaph.

The Ulster Memorial Tower at Thiepval, France commemorates the sacrifice of

the Ulster Division. It was constructed to resemble Scrabo Tower, a landmark which dominates the landscape of North Down. This tower would have been the last view the soldiers would have seen of their homeland as they sailed from Ireland to war. There is also a Somme Heritage Centre dedicated to the Somme battle.

Canadians should also never forget the sacrifice of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment which also underwent the horrors of the Somme and experienced great losses.

July 1, is now celebrated as Memorial Day in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Way Forward MOOC Now Open For Registrations

People often can’t help but smile when they see sixyear-old Kamryn Bond lay a wreath with her friend, Shannon Krasowski, 40, at their local Remembrance Day ceremony. Although an unlikely pair, they are both amputees and are part of a legacy that goes back nearly 100 years.

Kamryn is a member, and Shannon a graduate, of The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program. It was war amputee veterans who created The War Amps in 1918, its Key Tag Service in 1946, and later, the CHAMP Program.

Since 1975, thousands of child amputees across Canada have received financial assistance for their artificial limbs through CHAMP and attended regional seminars where they learn about growing up as an amputee.

When Kamryn was 11 months old, both of her legs, right hand, and several fingers on her left hand, were amputated due to a respiratory illness. Shannon’s left leg was amputated when she was 13 - years - old due to bone cancer.

They met three years ago at their local Remembrance Day ceremony. That year, Kamryn watched Shannon lay a wreath on behalf of The War Amps Operation Legacy, but ever since, it has been a tradition they share.

While growing up as a Champ, Shannon met many war amputee veterans and heard their firsthand accounts of the devastation of war. “They passed this legacy to us younger amputees and now it’s our turn to share their stories, so that we never forget their sacrifices,” she says.

Although Kamryn is still quite young, her mom, Dale, says it is important for her daughter to lay a wreath on Remembrance Day. “It builds the foundation for her to understand how much our war veterans gave up for our freedom.”

Dale adds, “We will always be appreciative of the work of the war amputee veterans and the message they have left for young amputees like Kamryn to carry into the future.

It is for this reason that she lays a wreath every year in their honour, and will do so for many years to come.”

Lakeland College Submitted

After a successful pilot period, The Way Forward – Transitional Life Skills for Military Members and their Families is now available as a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) for anyone to access.

“We launched the resource on Monday, Oct. 17,” says Dale Pearce, an accessibility advisor in The Learning Commons at Lakeland College.

The Way Forward is a free online resource designed for military members, their spouses and their dependents.

Students complete modules on communication, organization, goals, transition challenges, emotions, mental health and resources. The content is available online through Desire2Learn, the learning management system Lakeland uses.

“There’s no time limit, people can work through the modules at their own pace. There are discussion threads they can use as well, which I moderate,” says Pearce. Right now only English modules are available but the content is being translated into French.

Development of the resource began in February 2015 when Lakeland College officials asked employees for new programming ideas. As a former military member, Pearce knew there was a need for resources to help members adjust to life outside the military.

Air Force Veteran John Karwandy Veteran John Karwandy joined the Canadian Air Force in 1943.

Based mostly in Eastern Canada, Karwandy didn’t have to go to World War II. “I was 17 and a half years - old when I joined the Force in 1943 and the war was ending then so they didn’t send me, maybe they didn’t send me because I was too young. I missed all the fun stuff. I trained as an aerial photographer and I did a lot of dark room work,” said Karwandy.

J.R. Robson Awards Night

Families filled the J. R. Robson gymnasium to celebrate an Awards Ceremony on November 4.

“I think it’s great when we come together to celebrate student accomplishments. There were well over 100 recipients this evening. I feel that speaks to their individual excellence in many aspects,” said Vice Principal Kelly Scully.

The Premier’s Citizenship Award re c o g nizes ind ivi duals who have displayed outstanding academic ability, have shown leadership in school, extracurricular, or community events, and were willing to place the good of others above personal ambitions.

This year’s recipient was Cameron Webb.

The Governor General’s Medal is awarded to the student with the highest academic average in Grade 12. This year’s recipient was Julia McKimmon.

Trinity-WISDOM Injunction

As of November 1, Trinity-WIDSOM had filed court documents regarding their closure on October 25, by Alberta Education.

With 3,500 children and their families on edge part way through the school year, many were eager to hear the outcome.

On November 4, the Court of Queen’s

Bench in Grande Prairie granted them an injunction allowing them to continue schooling and facilitating home-education.

The full injunction can be viewed at www.widomhomeschooling.com.

However, Trinity and WISDOM were only granted 10% of their annual funding from the government. Their next court date will be January 5, 2017.

Congratulations to Tessa Hartwell for “most creative” and duo, Jade Bodurka and Nicole Stenne for “best overall”, voted by the public for their pumpkin carvings. The contest was hosted by the Vermilion Public Library, and the library also purchased the pumpkins to J. R. Robson’s carvers.

The junior boys’ volleyball team concluded their season strong! This year at the 2016-2017 Buffalo Trail volleyball finals, the junior A-team won the Banner for their third year in a row! In the final game the boys played against Provost for the banner and they won.

On Wednesday 2, Grade 9 students participated in the national “Take Our Kids to Work” event, replacing a day of school for a day in the workplace. Students paired up with adults in a place of employment to find out more about job duties and roles.

This annual experience for the kids is a great opportunity for our teens to find out what their parents do or find a pairing of a specific career interest to gain insight on what the job entails.

October 28 was the “Howl for Hot Lunch” Halloween fundraiser dance at VES. There were over 100 people in attendance. It was a great time for the little ghouls and goblins of the school.

A huge thank you to DJ Brett for keeping the lit tle monsters enter tained on the dance floor. Door prizes were handed out as well as prizes for best costume. Funds raised from the night went towards operational costs of the hot lunch program at VES. The Grade 1 students’ pumpkin exploration day was a great learning experience. They each measured how tall their pumpkin was, how big around it was, how many ribs it had, if it floated, and they even counted the seeds. Afterwards, they carved the pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns.

On Halloween morning, they visited the Vermilion Lodge and Continuing Care, where they entertained the residents with a few Halloween songs.

For the second year, VES partnered with Webb›s Ford of Vermilion to take par t in the We Scare Hunger Food Drive. We were able to collect almost 1000 items for our local food bank. The Me to We Club helped to organize this event by making and hanging posters, collecting and counting the number of

items collected daily, making morning announcements and hauling food into the Ford truck. One of the school virtues we have worked on this year is goal setting. We set a goal to collect 75 non-perishable items for each class. If a class met the goal, they were entered to win a pizza party sponsored by Webb›s Ford of Vermilion. The winner of that was Grade 3A. At our November 1 assembly, we discussed perseverance, as this is our November virtue. The two Grade 1 classes gave a fantastic presentation on perseverance including things they could and couldn’t do and the power of ‘yet’. Fat Cat visited our school and, on behalf of Vermilion Credit Union, presented VES with a cheque for $3828 for our accelerated reading program.

We acknowledged with Subway gift cards, the top three sellers of the Perogy fundraiser: Jarrett Poliakiwski, Linden and Lance Adams, and Madison Flanders. At the end of the assembly, the drama club, under the direction of Mrs. Goodwin and Mrs. Wakefield, did a superb job of presenting “The Velveteen Rabbit” to our school body.

The VES AR goal for this year is 22 000 total points. Grade level goals are 20 points for Grade 2 students, 30 points for Grade 3, and so on. Once students have achieved half of their goal, they get their photo taken with one of their favorite books, and the

picture is posted on the Library Learning Commons bulletin board for all to see. If a student reaches their grade level goal prior to January 31, the student gets to choose a new AR book for our Library and autograph the inside cover.

In October Grades 3 - 6 students were invited to join the first elementary after school club of the year. Each Tuesday in October approximately 15 - 20 students participated in Games Club. Students have a lot of fun playing a variety of games like Bingo, Apples to Apples, Uno, Even Stevens Odds, Dragon’s Loot, Bellz, and Yikers. A good time was had by all!

Our November elementar y af ter school club is Lego. Students can join this club on Tuesdays (November 1, 15, 22 and 29) and get building!

The Foods 20 - 30 students were treate d to a pre se nt at i o n o n fo o d production by local agronomist, Arvel Lawson, on October 24. Arvel helped them to understand the procedures undertaken in processing crop commodities from the farm to the table.

A quick heads up that there will be skating in December. There will be our annual skate swap the week of November 14 -18 if you would like to come in and borrow a pair of skates for the season. If you have skates you have borrowed in the past to return, please bring them in. Donations of outgrown skates is most welcome!!

The community rink is undergoing

an upgrade to the system. Once the ice is fully in, FunTeam Family Skate and Shinny Hockey will begin Fridays after school.

Once the skating rink is up and running, the curling ice will be quick to follow. Anyone wanting to learn to curl please let Mrs. Tod know - there will also be a signup sheet on the announcement board in the school entrance. Mrs. Polishuk will be teaching elementary Learn to Curl for students in Grades 4 - 6. Mrs. Tod will be coordinating practices and teams for any junior high or high school students wishing to curl.

Grade 3’s love Fridays! Why? This is the day they get to spend 20 minutes reading with a Grade 8 student. Both partners take turns reading aloud. It helps the younger students practice their reading fluency and the older students model good listening and oral reading skills. Reading buddies also helps to build student connections between the elementary and high school students.

Monday, October 31, happened to be a very busy day throughout St. Jerome’s. Throughout the halls you could see students from Grade 9 -12 dressed up for a spirit point. Over lunch student council held a costume contest for those in Halloween attire.1st - Group "The Purge"; Karley Dieken, Brianne Wheat, Catherine Pulyk, Erica Snelgrove, Shaelyn Rehmann, Tenille Chase, and Caylyn Cooper, 1st Individual - "Ace Ventura" Dawson Riley, Judge's Choice - "Inside Out" - Trista Minish, Andrea Zielinski, Shae Collins, Breanna Maughan, Morgan Elliott. Congratulations to all the students for their terrific costumes.

The student council had also hosted a scavenger hunt throughout the school, winners included: Gabriel Quickstad, Alisha Menzies, and Kaden Rochford.

During the evening, student council members and students went door-todoor trick or treating for donations to the food bank. Instead of candy these students filled trunks of cars with nonperishable food items for the "We Scare Hunger" campaign. A huge thanks to all the students who participated and the community who supported the cause.

On Halloween Day Middle Level students had a costume contest. Mrs. Beaudette and Ms. Partington’s classes brought snacks that were all shared and the afternoon was spent watching Halloween movies. Costume contest winners were: Douglas Davies -1st place as Oscar the Grouch, Mary Ulrich - 2nd place as Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter, Sophie Whelan, Saige Swanson, Kennedy Protsch, Morgan Cooper-3rd place as Pink Ladies from Grease. The Middle Level Arts and Crafts option had lots of fun making masks for Halloween.

Elementary students enjoyed celebrating Halloween Day with a variety of activities. At 9:30 a.m. kindergarten to Grade 5 students gathered in the gym with parents and guest to celebrate the 15th Annual Monster Mash Halloween put on by Mrs. Roth’s Grade four class.

They entertained us all with an energetic performance of the “Monster Mash”, the poem “It’s Halloween” and the Christian song, “Every Move”. Students from each class were presented with Happigrams for their hard work and improvement in their classes for the months of September and October. St. Jerome’s Senior Boys Volleyball Tournament

The St. Jerome’s Sr. Boys Volleyball Team as they hosted their home tournament from November 3 - 5.

“Everyone is getting some time on the cour t and they’re playing really good volleyball. On Friday, the children were excited to see family and friends come out to show their support,” said Manager Dave Sader.

This is the first year that J.R. Robson and St. Jerome’s School have opted to have students from both schools form one sports team. “ T h e r e wa s a n e e d fo r p l aye r s from both schools and the collaboration allows for the children to be able to play. The team was able to come together well, as many of the boys had played other sports together,” said J.R. Robson Athletic Director Lee Woodward.

The St. Jerome’s Sr. Boys Volleyball Team will be heading to Fort McMurray in two weeks for zones.

The Jr. B. Tiger’s Fight To The End Pays Off

The crowd roared in victory as the Vermilion Jr. B. Tigers triumphed over the Cold Lake Ice on November 5.

Evan Bardoel scored Vermilion’s first goal with nearly seven minutes left in the first period. Cold Lake had already scored 2 goals in the first period, so players received some long awaited relief when Carter Myhovich scored

a goal with 29 seconds left in the 2 nd period.

Knowing they were back in it, meant they weren’t going to give up the game for anything. Tight defence and a goalie on point, led the Tigers in to overtime and a shootout. Lucas Dennill scored the game winning goal.

The Jr. B. Tiger’s will host the Vegreville Rangers on November 9, and November 13.

Rock Hockey

Vermilion Rock players worked hard to keep the Dewberry Mustangs out of their end zone during their game on November 4.

Trailing behind and trying to fight back, the Vermilion Rock suffered a 5 - 2 loss to Dewberry on November 4.

An entertaining game was still seen as Vermilion outshot Dewberry 27 - 26. Also Dewberry served 36 penalty minutes while Vermilion only served 14.

The County of Vermilion River and the County of Minburn are seeking a highly motivated person to join our team as Municipal Conservation Coordinator. Key qualifications include a Post Secondary Degree in Agricultural or Environmental Sciences (with equivalent experience considered). The Coordinator delivers the Ag/Enviro program for both Counties. Expertise in riparian area management, soil conservation, grazing management, nutrient management, climate change and extension activities would be an asset.

Key components of the position include: * Aid in development and adoption of management practices to improve environmental sustainability of agriculture producers. * Develop and recommend practices to help landowners better manage their land and water resources. * Assist landowners with developing Environmental Farm Plans and support Growing Forward applications. * Liaise with agribusiness and industry and coordinate and conduct environmental programming. * Use tours, workshops, written articles, and one-on-one work (including farm calls) to inform producers about environmentally sustainable agricultural practices. * Coordinate and administer the agricultural recycling program.

A competitive salary and comprehensive municipal benefits package is available. The successful candidate will be required to provide a criminal record check and drivers abstract, as well as their own vehicle (with paid mileage). Some weekend and evening work may be required. Cowboys Learn To Grip And Stay On

Lane Cust also attended as a saddl-

ebronc instructor. Cust is a two time Canadian Novice Saddlebronc Champion and a CFR qualifier in open.

Safety was taught both in saddlebronc riding and during the bareback riding school.
