The Vermilion Curling Club hosted their 4th Annual Curloween on October 29, as a start to their season.

Throughout the evening, par ticipants enjoyed appetizers donated by Anthony’s Grill, and door prizes were handed out. “ I e n j oy c o m i n g a n d h av i n g a n excuse to dress up for Halloween,” said Tina Hollen. “ Ever yo ne is lai d bac k , and the event is a lot of fun,” said Jennifer Howard.

Global Wildlife Crisis - Film Screening

Vermilion’s Lakeland College will be hosting ‘The Messenger’ film screening on November 15, at 7 p.m.

The documentary film magnificently captures songbirds in flight and shares the compelling evidence of profound environmental problems.

Significant Canadian research is featured in the film, and Dr. Erin Bayne from the University of Alberta will be at the film screening to discuss questions with a panel the same day.

Several species of songbirds migrate through the Vermilion River Region each year. In vast waves, they make their way from the tropics to the Northern Boreal Forest to reproduce.

“Songbirds can survive in the trop-

ics, but there isn’t enough protein for them there. Have you ever seen the size of mosquitoes in the Nor th? It is life or death that these birds make it to their destination,” said Wildlife and Fisheries Conservation Program Head, Chris Olsen.

He went on to say that Alber ta’s environment is one of the most modified in the world, and becomes part of the global picture with economic choices and in terms of biodiversity.

“We want to create awareness about what is happening. Barn swallows are in a lot of trouble right now, along with many other species. If there’s something badly amiss with the environment, it will affect us all,” said Olsen.

The World Wildlife Fund released a report on October 27, stating that

two-thirds of the world’s wildlife are on track to disappear by 2020. They mentioned that in the last 40 years, global animal populations are down 60 percent. “ T h e m e s s ag e i s fo r t h e w h o l e of o ur e nv ir o n m e nt .

There will be something for everyone’s experience. We’re encouraging people to think globally and act locally,” said Olsen.

The Vermilion Veterinary Clinic was purchased by Dr. Tim Goodbrand in August 2000 and moved to its current location in September 2003. Holocaust Survivor Eva Olsson Shares Her Story

It was an important history lesson for the students of VES, J.R. Robson, and St. Jerome’s school, as Holo caust survivor Eva Olsson told stories from inside the Auschwitz concentration camp with frankness and detail in Vermilion on October 27.

Eva Olsson was 19 when her family wa s s e nt to t h e N a zi d eat h c am p Auschwitz, during the Second World War. After standing, packed on a train with hundreds of other Jews, fighting for oxygen as others collapsed and died, Olsson arrived at her destination; the “killing factory” Auschwitz-Birkenau in Poland. This wasn’t a brick factory, like Olsson was led to believe when she boarded what’s now referred to as the ‘Death Train,’ from Hungary.

“I walked off the train and noticed the chaos. Black clouds of smoke blanketed the skies, the sound of machine guns roared, and there were barbed wire fences to ensure no escape. I remember I turned to my mother and said where do we work here… I soon found out what was going on,” said Olsson.

“At that point, I held the hand of my youngest niece, the daughter of her dead sister Judy, as the Nazi soldiers rounded us up. A senior man who was a prisoner came over and said to

me give the child to an older woman; I didn’t let go of my niece’s hand until he came over for the third time. If I had not let go of her hand - I would not be here today!” she told the astonished students.

Olsson lined up beside with her mother. At the front of the line, a man stood silently at the top, only pointing either left or right to convey his orders… life or death.

“He was the Angel of Death, Josef Mengele, the Nazi, officer physician.

What happened nex t was the most brutal experience of my life. My mother was by my side, and then she was gone. Everybody in my family went to the left (to the gas chambers) expect my sister and me.” explained Olsson.

She survived one year in the concentration camp living in the worst condition imaginable. Olsson described the soup made from dirty potato skins they had to eat and how she slept outside on the ground of a dirty football field in graphic detail. No one spoke and hung on Olsson’s every word in disbelief that humans could have been so cruel to one and other.

She described the constant smell of human flesh burning and how prisoner’s heads were cut off after the bodies were removed from the gas chambers so that the hair could be sent to Germany to make socks for soldiers.

Olsson is one of the few survivors left

in the world today, who walked away from one of the most horrific genocides in human history, an injustice masterminded by Adolf Hitler, executed by the Nazi regime, and worsened by the inaction of bystanders.

The students of VES sang Happy Bir thday in celebration of Olsson’s 92nd birthday on October 28.

Olsson advised children to always stand up against the bully and strive for compassion. “Never hate. 1.1 million people died in Auschwitz and hate was the cause of it all. Never hate – hate is a killer!”

Today she used her story of the Holocaust and its extreme examples of hate, bigotry, and inaction of onlookers to promote a message of peace and love.

She said bystanders are as guilty as the perpetrators, there are no innocent bystanders.

“Hitler could not have got away with what he did without the bystanders and a lack of compassion among European countries. The wars in the world on our screens today are very frightening and it’s not a good sign.”

Olsson said that what happened to her never leaves, “it is always there; it is something that doesn’t go away.”

“The message I want to bring to the world is eliminate hate.”

October hasn’t been the nicest month we have seen this year to say the least, the white stuff making its appearance along with cold and wet east winds, a lot to do with I’m sure hurricanes on east coast.

Some say the hurricanes in the southern USA and east coast shouldn’t affect us that much, however when the hurricanes do occur and we get those east winds nothing good comes our way. However, I guess we can see a lot of nasty stuff from our regular wind from the North West, but we all know Mother Nature isn’t always happy all the time and we can get nasty stuff regardless of which way the wind blows. Or maybe old man winter is just grumpier this year, he was very mellow last year and must have been in a good mood because that was one of the mildest winters and earliest springs I can remember.

I told everyone the snow wasn’t here to stay, but after a couple weeks and with November coming fast I was beginning to think I was wrong, however we did see a couple decent days and the white stuff left quickly.

For a while there I was wondering if we were going to see that big bright light in the sky ever again, a couple Sunday’s ago was a beautiful sunny sunrise however it was very ‘fresh and crisp’ out there. I was sitting in a tree stand an hour before sunrise, a cold east wind blew in my face and I thought

daylight was never coming, as the sun peeked out of the east horizon, I embraced it like an old friend. The Old Farmer’s Almanac is predicting a harsh cold and snowy winter for 2016 and into 2017; I tend to agree with all the above-normal Atlantic hurricane season lately.

Animals such as elk are already getting thick winter coats, but on the other hand I saw a Garter snake this past Sunday winding its way across the road, I swerved to miss him and he made it safely across the road. However, I noticed on a nearby telephone pole a Swainson’s hawk perched with its super power vision. I’m sure the Garter snake didn’t go unnoticed and may have been on the lunch menu, but seeing both is a good sign that a decent fall is still trying to linger on.

Bow Hunting elk has been both exciting and disappointing, again east winds affecting the outcome, but our biggest hindrance this year has been people; it seems the outstanding ethics of bow hunters is now also a thing of the past. We have several hunters with bows; I won’t give them the satisfaction of calling them bowhunters, and maybe even calling them a hunter is beyond a good phrase. Unfortunately anyone can pick up a bow or rifle and call themselves a hunter, as with anything else one will find those that tarnish what we do, what we saw this year though leave’s me shaking my head. These people may be outstanding archers and even good hunters, but are totally without ethics, something that true hunters try to value and abide by.

Now I am not talking about those few

trespassers and law breakers, all hunters in this day and age should seek permission and show best respect for and from our farmer and landowner neighbours. It’s just simple ethics, we have a few hunters with bows that have totally ruined and wasted many days for this year just due to bad ethics, costing us both money and successful adventures. Our small group hunt a small parcel of public land, only about 1 km long and wide, and we have done so in the exact same spot for over a dozen years, close to a 3 km walk from the cabin.

Now granted it’s not private land and is public land so anyone has reasonable access, however when they walk down the same trail animals use, right under and by your stand, knowing your there is a huge issue with ethics. There are a couple people who we politely asked not to ruin our hunts like this but consistently insist on ruining many days for us, not only do they walk right by the stand they will set up an decoy 50 meters from the stand and call.

All our time scouting, setting up, walking 3 km to get there is ruined in minutes, as much as we ask these people to please leave us alone, and use some ethics they blatantly and constantly ruin it for everyone including themselves.

Yesterday one of these…people… walked by every tree stand and blind we have, bugling or as they think it sounds like an elk bugle and even sat mere feet away from one of our guys. To even get there, they first chase animals off the fields feeding with their vehicle, then walk straight towards us in the direction the animals use to get to

protected bedding areas, all before sunrise.

So now the majority of animals pass by us in complete darkness, as I mentioned it is public land but really is Alberta not big enough? Is there no more ethics in anything we do now days? It’s sad after 40 years seeing the downfall in something that is a way of life for many us; perhaps the saddest thing is with newer generations it is only going to get worse if future adventures learn by example.

Well enough venting for now, all that accomplishes is high blood pressure, which just counteracts all that great exercise and fresh air I have been getting.

The Miss Oohohh Chronicles Let me inside its cold… said no Alaskan Malamute ever!!! Miss Oohohh loved the snow and cooler weather; she already had her first dogsled pull in real snow.

Being at the cabin a lot I try to spend as much time as possible with Miss Oohohh.

She just had her big #1 birthday on October 11, so with this breed that means only two more years of puppy antics. With Halloween coming the wife bought a few boxes of small Halloween treats, I’m still laughing picturing her yesterday walking around and sitting there like normal with an empty treat box stuck on her head.

Home Schooling (WHS) had been shut down.

Speculation of findings from Alberta Education Minister, David Eggen’s office regarding the school board’s financial audit is rampant online.

As of October 27, WHS has sought legal counsel and will be opposing the removal of TCSA’s accreditation in court.

Many parents were in uproar upon receiving an automated phone call as their only notification from the government.

“During that call, a lot of pressure was put on parents to immediately get students registered somewhere else. We were shocked with the suddenness of the decision,” said Maighread.

“Our experience with WISDOM has been a very positive one, and since enrolling our children there, our whole family has benefited from the decision,” said Tim. With thousands of families left vulnerable part way through the school term, many local families are choosing to support their trusted school board.

“Wisdom’s many programs, resources, ongoing support, and consistent encour-

COYOTE REDUCTION PROGRAM COUNTY OF TWO HILLS NO. 21

The County of Two Hills will be running the Coyote Reduction Incentive Program for the 2016/17 Winter Season. The county will pay $15.00 per coyote turned in to the County of Two Hills Agricultural Service Board office by County Residents from November 1, 2016 until April 30, 2017, depending on budget limitations or abuse of the program. The number of coyotes eligible to be turned in for the incentive payment will be limited to a maximum of 20 coyotes per week and a total season maximum of 100 coyotes per county resident. Only whole intact carcasses will be accepted.

The origins of Halloween can be widely debated as some believe it originates partly from Christianity “All Saints Day” a day of the feast. As stated on http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca. The word Halloween has Christian origins: in medieval Britain, All Hallows’ Eve, from which we derive our “Halloween,” was the evening before All Saints Day (or All Hallows).

The customs of Halloween may derive more from an ancient, pre- Christian, Celtic festival of Samhain, which some argue was adapted by early Christians to convert the Celtic people. It was observed yearly in Britain and Ireland on November 1, marking the end of the harvest and beginning of winter. People wore costumes and masks to ward off

harmful spirits. The bones of slaughtered animals were cast into fires to aid the dead on their journey, hence the term “bone fire” which nowadays we call “bonfire.”

Halloween traditions were brought to Canada by means of Scottish and Irish immigrants. One of the customs brought with them was the Jack-O -Lantern.

Originally the Jack-O-Lantern was a carved out turnip holding a candle. The same as with much of Halloween origins there is debate amongst how the Jack –O-Lantern came to be. Some believe that the carved turnips were used as lanterns on Samhain, while others claim it came from an adaptation of the old Christian custom of commemorating souls in purgatory by lighting candles in turnips. Also, there is some debate about the Jack-O-Lantern being derived from a story of a man who was refused entry into either heaven or hell because he was a miser and he played tricks on the

devil. The man Jack was condemned to walk the earth with a lantern until Judgement Day. Well, today will be the day we get to watch all the ghouls, goblins and every other scary monster and maybe even some princes and princesses run from door to door. Some adults will dress up, and that is often funnier than the children. Yay! I love Halloween.

Our children will be out and about, and as a community, we will have to be more aware of our surroundings while we drive through the streets, children often get so excited they forget the rules of the road and will pop out in front of an oncoming car without even thinking of the consequences. Dark colored costumes will make the children much harder to see, so put a reflective stripe on your children’s costume, so they are more visible to vehicles.

We also have to remember that even though we live in our safe little commu-

nity, it is still very important to check all treats our children receive before they eat anything.

We need to monitor all activities our children are involved in because let’s face it when they get out with their friends a night of fun can quickly turn into a night of destruction. Cars, houses, and buildings can and will be pranked or vandalized.

Teach our children to respect the property of other community members, instruct them on the consequence of their actions if they feel the need to succumb to peer pressure.

Keep all pets inside, children running into a driveway or yard unannounced to a dog can cause the animal to instinctively react which could result in a child being bitten.

Let’s keep this Halloween a safe and happy day for everyone involved, caution, perseverance and smarts will do it.

“The NDP won’t get back in power; they are very unpopular. The Wildrose party is very popular right now outside of Edmonton and Calgary, and there are 43 seats outside of the two cities.

Edmonton is living off government money, and they have recently hired 22,000 new civil servants. Sherwood Park and Nisku were built on oil and gas revenue and in February of next year that money is going to stop flowing, and Edmonton is going to start feeling the pain,” predicted Jean.

He added that he will fight Ottawa every step of the way on their carbon tax and that he wouldn’t vote for either of the USA presidential candidates running in the US election. “ I hope the people of the United States of America win the election.” said Jean.

Betty Lobe of High River, Alberta passed away peacefully at the High River Hospital on October 21, 2016 surrounded by her husband, children, and loved ones.

Betty leaves to mourn her loving husband of 50 years, Gene, Son Ivan (Logan Demerais), daughters Rachel (Andrew Moore) and Hilary (Erin Welte), as well as five ‘perfect’ grand-daughters; Julia, Madeleine, Elizabeth, Josephine, and Helena.

Betty was predeceased by her mother, Doris Coulter (1965), father, Glen Coulter (2014), beloved Uncle Devon Coulter (1996), and sister in law Jackie Coulter (2009). She is survived by her four younger siblings; Bonny Hamm (Jake), Gene Coulter (Debbie), Louise Coulter-Chomiak (Rick), and Calvin Coulter (Jane). Betty is also survived by Gene’s siblings: Verm Lobe (Joan), Donna Driedger (Irvin), Bert Lobe (Martha), and Gord Lobe (Pat).

She will be missed by nieces and nephews, her wide circle of friends, and her many honorary grandchildren.

Mom was born in Mannville, Alberta on October 9, 1944 to Doris and Glen Coulter. She grew up in the Chailey district, a farming community just North of Mannville. Betty always referred to Chailey as ‘home’, and will be laid to rest in a family plot adjacent to the farm where she was raised.

Betty took her nursing degree in Lamont, Alberta, and did her nurses training at Archer Memorial Hospital, graduating in 1966. It was in Lamont that she met the love of her life, Gene Lobe. Gene noticed her at a curling bonspiel and was drawn immediately to her natural beauty with classic style.

Betty and Gene were married August 20, 1966 a week after her graduation. They moved to LaCrete, Alberta, with 39 cents to their name to start their life together. Betty was asked to take a position as the Municipal Health nurse. Son Ivan was born in Ft. Vermilion in 1969, and daughter Rachel followed in 1971. In 1972, they moved to High River, Alberta, where daughter Hilary was born in 1973. They built their dream home on a bare piece of land just outside High River.

Mom truly loved working with the elderly, and had a knack for bringing out the very best in her residents, their families, and her collegues. She was a Registered Nurse and worked at the Twilight Nursing Home, the High River Hospital (Second Floor), and the Extended Care in Vulcan. After retirement, Betty and Gene combined their interest in people and love of travel by volunteering with Mennonite Disaster Service to help communities in need in various locales across North America. Betty did anything from working in the kitchen to hanging drywall in the homes she was helping construct. The MDS project in High River was near and dear to Betty’s heart.

Betty loved people, making connections wherever she went. She was often called upon to share her vast knowledge, to step in and lend practical assistance or emotional support, or to lighten the mood with her stories and her laughter. Betty had a quick and curious mind, and a remarkable memory for facts and details which made her a formidable Scrabble opponent.

Mom and Dad planned to see the world, and managed to visit 96 countries and 49 states. They had just completed a trip of a lifetime, an Alaskan Cruise for their 50th wedding anniversary with their six kids and five ‘perfect’ grand-daughters.

Betty’s family was her pride and joy. She loved being a wife, a mom, and her greatest accomplishment was being Mama B to her five little girls. The quote in Betty’s kitchen reads: “A happy family is but an earlier heaven.”

A Celebration of Life was held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 28 at the Full Gospel Church in High River with an inturnment at St. Albans Cemetery in Chailey at a future date. In the early times as the railroads came through, grain elevator ship ping p oints were built fairly close together along the way.

Most all the grain was hauled to them on horse drawn wagons or sleighs. Folks like mine living between the railroads had quite a distance to haul and the sight of those elevators must have been wonderful after a trip on an open sleigh or wagon of several hours in the cold.

I always thought it a good idea that they painted the name on the elevator so you could tell where your were!! Yes, the elevators stood like sentinels keeping an eye on all the goings on around the country and for a years were the tallest buildings anywhere around, you could

see them for miles. That was the case for years all through my childhood until the last few years when it seemed the small branch rail lines were abandoned and our sentinels began to be torn down. Trucks took over the hauling as roads became better and better and the little trucks got bigger and bigger. Wouldn’t you know it those little old grain elevators became grain terminals that were miles apart and those old wooden elevators are like antique museum pieces now, so gone are our built in navigation aids. As I remember my flying days when I was first learning, how it was so neat to hone in on an elevator on the horizon skyline and as you got closer you could read the name and place on that elevator and a glance at your map told you just where you were.

Great!! Now, as I drive the country I see on the skyline tall skinny towers, several hundred feet tall that make me glad I’m

not flying now. I think those towers would be a hazard for the little planes that used to be so common in the heyday of flying.

My I’m glad that I had the chance to fly like I did back then.

In Vermilion here when I was taking my flying lessons, there were four towers south east of town, I used as a focus for heading back to the run way and they had lights you could see for miles. On high ground east of home there stood a tower I could see for miles as it stood on high ground. I used it to guide me home.

Seemed you could index all those towers and watch for them so you perhaps wouldn’t get surprised when you came upon one!! All the aviation maps were updated to keep you aware.

There seem to be so many now however I wonder if those maps still mark them!! Yes, as I drive it seems you are never out of sight of at least one

tower or another. Many of them are for cell phones and so many other electronic communication net works, that have all sorts of fixings on them. I often wonder who has the job of servicing those weird structures I guess like the old grain elevators telephone lines will be obsolete and they will be done away with like those old sentinels. Hard to believe that many folks don’t have anything but cell phones and land lines are no longer the norm. No more phone lines tangled in the trees or knocked down by wind or all that. I guess the new sentinels that we’ll see are those various towers that have taken their place. In my time I’ve seen the grain elevators change to terminals and the tele-phone lines have changed to micro- wave and cell phone towers.

Wonder if I’ll see those towers made obsolete by some new fangled way of keeping in touch!!

In the loving presence of family, Grace slept away peacefully after a long, happy life. She often expressed how lucky she had been to have shared such a wonderful life with Jack on the farm at Minburn as well as at the retirement acreage near Ardrossan.

Gardening, quilting and knitting bears kept her busy, but family and friends were always her priority. She was predeceased by John (Jack) her loving husband of 62 years, as well as her 6 siblings (spouses) – Agnes (Harold) White, Mungo (Peggy) Forbes, Marjorie (Donald) Myers, Charlie (Kay) Forbes, Catherine (Art) Collins and Tom (Ivy) Forbes.

She is lovingly remembered by her children – Heather, of Edmonton, Ian (Verena) of Leduc, Margaret (John Morck) of Calgary, Lorne (Jacquie) of Edmonton and Andrew (Lyndsay) of Minburn, her 7 grandchildren – Joey, Jason, Alisha, Kyle, Paige, Quinn and Brooke, sisters-in-law Linda Forbes and Mary Forbes, plus several nieces and nephews and their extended families.

The family thanks the staff of both the Lifestyles Community Options – Whitemud, and the Grey Nun’s Hospital for their care.

or oil and sprinkle with one teaspoon of iodized sea salt. Spread the seeds on a cookie sheet and bake at 300 degrees for about 20 minutes, stirring once, halfway through the baking time.

Jack – O – Lantern Carving Pumpkin carving has become an art form, with some pretty amazing carving. To do a simple pumpkin, cut the top off with a sharp knife, scoop out the seeds with a large spoon and then begin your masterpiece. Traditionally they are lit inside with a votive or tea light candle. Remember, October is fire prevention month, so never leave a burning candle unattended. To be able to use the pumpkin flesh to eat, use a battery operated candle instead of a regular candle, which will soot the indie of the pumpkin.

Roasted Pumpkin Cut the pumpkin in half and place flesh side down, skin side up on a buttered cookie sheet. Roast at 350 degrees until the flesh is soft. Cool slightly and then scoop and cut away the sof tened flesh and blend. It is now ready to be used for your favorite recipe. You can also eat the pumpkin hot, with butter, salt and pepper.

Boil for 5 minutes or until the mixture has reached the hardball stage, (260 degrees F). Cool slightly and stir in the vanilla. Pour this mixture over the popcorn, stirring to coat each kernel.

With buttered hands, quickly form into balls. Makes 12 – 2 1/2 inch balls.

Pumpkin Bacon Soup 6-7 cups cooked pumpkin 1 large or 2 medium yellow onions chopped 1 1/2 tablespoons butter 6 or 7 slices bacon, cooked until crisp 1/2 teaspoon sea salt In a heavy bottomed pot sauté the chopped onion until tender, pour the onions and butter in the blender and ad some of the pumpkin to be pureed.

Do about 3 cups at a time. I found that the warm pumpkin, pureed really well, while the cooled pumpkin need to have a little hot water added to the blender to really get things moving. Pour the pureed mixture back into the pot and add the additional pureed pumpkin.

Chop the crisp bacon and add to the soup, with salt to taste. Heat the soup to the desired temperature. It can be served as is or garnished with a dollop of sour cream and a sprinkle of your favo r i te s p i c e s u c h a s c i n n a m o n, thyme or curry.

Creative Crafts And Gifts Galore Craft And Trade Show Still A Hit

After 20 years, the annual Creative Craf ts and Gif ts Galore Craf t and Trade Show is still going strong! The event that was held in Der went on October 22 drew a crowd of over 600 people from neighbouring communities and beyond.

T h ere wa s d efin i te l y s o m et h in g there for ever yone as vendors attended from as far away as Calgary, St. Albert, Edmonton, Cold Lake and Waseca, Saskatchewan.

When the doors opened at 10 a.m., the huge crowd was eager to star t their way through the 45 plus vendors that occupied the two-story hall. Most of the vendors commented they had a

very successful day and remarked that it is always amazing to see so many people come to the little community of Derwent for a craft sale!

Almost 50 door prizes donated by the vendors were drawn throughout the day which meant many purchasing patrons left with a little extra something.

The kitchen was run by the 2017 St. Jerome’s grad c lass, and they were kept ver y busy throughout the day serving homemade soup and pie, kubbie on a bun and hotdogs. By the look of the empty pots, it was a very successful fundraiser for the class.

It was a great day in the Village of Derwent spent shopping, supporting and socializing!

Ken Stead Playing Soon At The Vermilion Folk Club

If you are looking forward to a night out in good company, then keep your schedule free for Musician Ken Stead performing for the Vermilion Folk Club on Saturday, November 19 at the Vermilion Legion at 8 p.m..

Ken Stead has played over 200 shows in the last two years; including festivals such as the Edmonton Folk Music Festival, Canmore Folk Festival, North Country Fair and Come By The Hills.

After releasing a couple of EP’s over the past few years, he describes himself as “more developmental than commercial in purpose.”

Stead hits his creative stride in his first full-length album, ‘Fear Has No Place Here.’

The album was recorded at Little Island Studios on Bowen Island in B.C. by producer Winston Hauschild (Hannah Georgas).

Stead said he goes through a process of self-examination and revelation in the album, as he explores the ups and downs of life with fortitude and optimism.

“It’s about looking at my own human condition and what I have experienced in life over the last few years. About two years ago I was living in Michigan and went through a divorce. I moved back to Edmonton and started playing music again with a real sense of purpose. A couple of songs were written just after I got back. But then I met someone, and there’s a whole other part of the story now; I am writing about love and about the transition I went through.

“For this album, I had to really look at myself in the mirror and face the choices I have made over the last five years. So I c ame bac k here and wrote introspectively about what happened, and in a way that isn’t all dark

and sad. I like to put a positive spin on things, and I try to stay optimistic. That’s my personality, and I want that it to come through in my writing,” said Stead.

Stead’s influences include some of his fellow Edmonton singer/ songwriters.

“Edmonton has a great music scene, and I find that I’m now more influenced by the artists around me. Scott Cook, Braden Gates, and Lucas Chaisson are all great musicians and songwriters. The music community here is really strong.”

As a songwriter, Stead says he has a very organic and spontaneous process which sometimes means his artistic output is firing off in many different directions.

“Sometimes I am too spontaneous because my songs come out in different genres. I have some blues songs and some reggae songs that came out at the same time as the songs for ‘Fear Has No Place Here.’ When I write it’s always guitar first, and then melody and those two things evoke the emo­tional tone and then that’s when ideas from my life start to come out as lyrics.” said Stead.

American Singer-Songwriter May is an acoustic guitar and mandolin songstress described as ‘a prolific songwriter with a direct connection to her muse.’ Lindsay wrote the material for her and Mark Gordon to record and produced two Americana/alt-country albums at once. Her second and third albums were rec orded at Vanc ou ver ’s Nim bus re c ording studios in 2011/2012. The fir st album ‘Shim mer’ was released in March 2012 to a Grade A review from the Vancouver Province. The second, “Girl with Grit”, an album about not giving up, was released January 2014 followed by a three-month tour across Canada.

Musician Billie Zizi will headline with a CD release alongside Kjelti Katherine on November 19.

If you’ve ever experienced the heaviness and lightness of love, then you can get behind Billi Zizi’s new album “ Moon of Honey ” (2016). ‘It carries all the agonies and ecstasies of all those late nights spent alone in your room waiting for your lover to call.’ Her sound is described as ‘a mix of dirtysoul-indie-jazz-pop’ and her voice has a vintage sound that oozes sexuality.

Af ter college, Zizi then traveled the world living, working, and traveling through West A f r i c a , A s i a , a n d Eu r o p e. I n 2010, she did a busking tour with her father that began in Turkey, moved through Eastern Europe, and ended in France where they Lindsay May will take to the stage at The Root on November 9. Rockin’ Halloween Dance Night And Hotdog Fundraiser

Vermilion Elementary School (VES) served nearly 300 hotdogs as a fundraiser for the Hot Lunch Program on October 26.

“We have a very passionate group of volunteers and without them, we wouldn’t be able to host the fundraisers or provide the Hot Lunch Program. Hot Lunch serves anywhere from 150 - 300 children three times per week, this makes for a lot of meals throughout the year. We are always seeking donations and are thankful for the support,” said Shannon Leonard, President of the Hot Lunch Program.

The VES Hot Lunch Program provides nutritional meals that follow the Canada Food Guide. Hot meals are a bonus in the

winter months.

“Our brains need food to think, and these meals are of great value because they assist in allowing our children to learn,” said Vice Principal Sheila Doherty.

A Halloween fancy dress dance party also took place at VES on October 28.

Children enjoyed tricks and treats at the dance in the school gym. They rocked the night away in their Halloween costumes and danced to the DJ. Principal Michelle Webb, who was out on the dance floor herself.

“It’s a great fun night; there was a lot of effort put into the scary costumes here tonight. I didn’t get time to dress up so I guess I’m dressed up as the principal,” said Webb.

Liberal Plan To Relocate Vegreville Case Processing Centre Will Devastate Community

Ottawa- Today, employees at the Vegreville Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Case Processing Centre were told the Liberals plan to shut it down and relocate it to a Crown owned property in downtown Edmonton. There are 280 employees at CPC Vegreville, a quarter of the student population are children of those employees and this decision may impact the jobs of 250 spouses.

“This is yet another example of the Liberals being out of touch with rural Canadians,” MP Stubbs said. “People in Vegreville can’t take another hit, farmers are struggling with crops left in the field, oil and gas workers have lost their jobs in unprecedented numbers, and in so many cases, these CPC Vegreville jobs are the only employment supporting peoples families, not to mention individuals and single parents. On top of this, the fact is, relocation or commuting are not options for many of the employees.”

These employees and their families will be devastated by this top down urban centric decision, which will have a domino

effect on other businesses, on community organizations, and on all of Vegreville.

CPC Vegreville is a leading employer in the area and is the major processing centre, and hub, for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship in western Canada.

It continues to be a major player, particularly in processing temporary and permanent residency applications, work permits, visitor records and study permits, and in providing back up to CPCs across Canada. Two years ago, all spousal applications previously processed in Vegreville were rerouted to Mississauga, at which point processing was delayed significantly and the backlogged inventory sent back to Vegreville for completion. No new spousal applications will be processed through Vegreville. Processing related to the Live in Caregiver Program has declined significantly, so the work load for employees dedicated to that program is very limited.

“This decision blindsided employees in Vegreville, and was obviously made with no consideration of the people who would be impacted most and no consultation about the consequences on the community as a whole. Employees and their fami-

lies are extremely distressed and uncertain about their futures because of the chaos caused by the announcement today. I am hearing from some employees who fear this decision was a self-fulfilling prophecy, and predetermined internally because they’ve had a significant decrease in their case load and a decline in paper applications, so they’re concerned the reduction is being used to justify the relocation; others are barely able to keep up with their enormous and ever increasing workloads because of increases in electronic application processing in other streams, but they’ve been told teleworking with the new Edmonton location is not an option even though all the work is done electronically. People are very worried and insecure about their futures; what is clear is the shocking announcement today will remove a vital and successful economic epicentre of the community at the very worst time.

It’s appalling,” said MP Stubbs.

Today’s announcement left many blindsided. The town, Mayor and council as well as employees and administrators in CPC Vegreville were not included, or consulted, in advance.

“The lack of consultation with local government on this issue is equally disturbing. Their ‘consult consult consult’ approach seems to only apply to those living in convenient urban centres. This dangerous decision needs to be revisited. I urge the Prime Minister, Minister McCallum and the Department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship to immediately reverse this decision, consult with employees, administrators, community members, businesses and municipal representatives in Vegreville to get a grasp on the situation, and to understand the devastation of their decision on these hard working families,” said MP Stubbs Many residents have already started to reach out to MP Stubbs looking for information on this announcement. “I have heard from constituents who are very concerned about what this means for them. They are worried about their futures and ability to stay in their homes, their jobs and their community. I will be writing to Minister McCallum to present him with all of the implications his ‘made in Ottawa’ approach will have on these people and their livelihoods.”

Olsson called it a killing factory. She didn’t even get a chance to say goodbye to her mother, who was sent to be killed in the gas chamber. She told the students to really value their families, and to talk to their parents when they have an issue. The opportunity to meet

a Holocaust survivor and to hear her inspirational message made a powerful impact on the students.

Jr. High Highway 16 Championships were held last week. The girls travel to Marwayne for the event, while the boys played at J.R. Robson. Both teams had great success throughout the day making it to the championship game.

The Jr. Boys lost a hard fought battle to J.R. Robson. Congratulations to the Grade 9 girls who took the Championships defeating Paradise Valley in the finals. Both Jr. High teams will

be par ticipating in the East Central Championship this week, which will be the end of their volleyball season.

Our Sr. Volleyball teams all saw action last weekend. Congratulations to the Sr. Girls who won Bronze at Holy Rosary.

The Grade 11 Girls won the consolation side of their tournament and the Sr. Boys lost in the semi-finals at the Lloydminster Composite Tournament.

Eleven members of St. Jerome’s Student Council learned Wednesday, October 26, how they were able to use their abilities, talents and passion to change the world. “WE Day Alberta”, an annual event aimed at inspiring young people to enact change globally and locally, took over the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgar y, with 16,000 students in attendance. The event, founded by brothers Craig and Marc Kielburger of Free The Chil dren, introduced students to a variety of speakers, including astronaut Chris Hadfield, television personality Paula Abdul, country singer Brett Kissel, rapper Classified, Rick Hansen and Margaret Trudeau, who encouraged students to continue their efforts to create positive change. To be eligible to attend this life changing event schools have to be involved in making a difference at the global, national and local level. St. Jerome’s fundraised throughout the year for Sister Gloria’s school/community in Peru, donated money to the Red Cross for the families of Fort McMurray and supports a variety of local events throughout the year. Thank you to Mr. MacMIllan and Mrs. Fraser for driving and attending the event with the students.

The will to win, the d esire to su c c eed, the urge to reach your full potential... these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence. – Confucius The U. S. Army says, “be all that you can be”, the students at Dewberry School have proven this time and again during the month of October. From random acts of kindness to pushing their limits on the volleyball court and powering up hills that feel like mountains in a cross country race, these students have begun to unlock their doors to personal excellence.

Junior boys’ volleyball team has spent a great season learning many strategies and discovering how and even what positions they play best. They continued to unlock many new doors that showcased their hidden abilities. They will make awesome teams next year. While the energetic junior girls were victorious in many events, winning all their games, including winning their own tournament held September 30.

We held our first r o u n d of p ar e nt teacher interviews on October 19 and 20. A new way of booking interviews was set up this year, and seemed to go very smoothly. Thank you to the parents who supported our new digital way of pre-arranging interviews and thanks to all parents who attended interviews for their partnership role in making sure their child’s educational experience is the best it can be.

October 21 was a school- based professional learning day for teachers.

We attended a presentation regarding character education (virtues), we discussed our annual school report and three year plan, we were presented with more information about First Nation, Metis, and Inuit peoples, we learned more about the future curriculum redesign, and we gathered in our grade groups for collaborative projects.

Our fall Scholastic Book Fair was once again a success. Thank you for all your support. Our winner of the family event door prize was Jenna Simonet and Mrs. Joa’s class. Jenna was able to choose $25 in books and product from the book fair, as was Mrs. Joa for her classroom library.

Cross country running isn’t for the faint of heart, at least that’s what the Dewberry team discovered this season. Through many challenging courses they persevered, some even enduring injuries but still crossing the finish line in good spirits.

Laramie Parr, Brenton Romanchuk, Ethan Warawa and Savana Deibert attended the junior high BTPS finals on a brutal course at the Vermilion Provincial Park, all coming in with excellent times and in the top 15 in their divisions. Keagan Rewuski received silver in high school zones, securing him a spot on the provincial team. Provincials saw Keagan receive a personal best of 23:05 for 6k! Fabulous job! We are proud of the accomplishments of these runners, their hard work and dedication made them shine!

The desire to succeed is alive and well in other facets of the school. Our fundraising efforts for the Terry Fox Run brought in $1165.25! What an amazing show of support from our community to help us

(almost) reach our $1200 goal, especially in tough economic times. Thank you to everyone who donated to our cause.

Vermilion Elementary School News

The two Grade 4 classes went on a field trip on the morning of October 26.

They visited the Vermilion Waste Transfer Station, the Community Closet, our town’s own Recycle Station and the Bottle Depot. This trip was connected to their Science unit called Waste and Our World.

For our fall fundraiser this year, VES sold Baba Jenny’s perogies. Students and staf f sold approximately 1250 bags of perogies, with VES getting to keep half of the profits. We would like to thank all those who helped with the buying and selling, as well as the set up and delivery. We really appreciate Baba Jenny’s support in helping us with the costs of our future field trips.

Dr. Eva Olsson (92-year-old Holocaust survivor) came to speak to our Grade 4 - 6 students on October 27. We are so thankful to VIBE for sponsoring this amazing opportunity. Dr. Olsson is such an inspiration to all who have a chance to meet her.

The Grade 6 students are collecting items for Operation Christmas Child. VES will be packing shoeboxes on November 3 in our House Leagues.

All shoeboxes will be checked by Grade 6 students and then shipped off to brighten the Christmas season for children all across the world. What a great way to show compassion and citizen-

ship.

Winter provides the per fect playground for Canadians of all ages. The key is to dress for the weather. Dressing in layers allows warm air to get trapped between them, creating an insulation effect. Begin with a moisture-wicking under layer, then an insulating middle layer, and finally a protective outer layer.

Within the past several years, the term “bully” has been brought to the forefront of our as bullying is a serious issue with serious consequences. It is important to distinguish what bullying is and is not. To clarify, these definitions help us distinguish the difference between bullying, being rude, and being mean. When someone is rude, that is a single or occasional event of someone unintentionally doing or saying something harmful. When someone does something intentionally hurtful once or on occasion, that is being mean.

Bullying is a conscious, willful, deliberate, repeated and hostile activity marked by an imbalance of power, intent to harm and/ or threat of aggression. Bullying can be

verbal (name-calling, put-downs, threats), homophobic bullying, transphobic bullying, social (exclusion, gossip, ganging up), physical (hitting, damaging property) or cyber bullying (using the computer to harass or threaten). Bullying can occur within a peer group or between groups. It can occur at home, at school, at work and in sports.

Some youth who bully will continue to bully throughout adolescence and into adulthood if they do not receive help.

The bullying may change as they age and can be carried forward into different types of relationships and environments.

It can lead to sexual harassment, dating violence, child abuse, elder abuse, and marital abuse. Children who bully are also more likely to abuse drugs, alcohol or have a criminal record when they are older.

“The biggest reward for us is being able to help out others in the community, and Over 100 people supported the Vermilion we appreciate the generous support from Knights of Columbus Pancake Breakfast at those who attend our breakfasts,” said the Elk’s Hall on October 30.

Knights of Columbus Breakfast Co-Chair, Community members enjoyed visiting Wayne Hemauer. while having pancakes, eggs, sausage, juice, and coffee. Girls Guides welcomed guests to the breakfast as their organization was the beneficiary of the proceeds.

“We would like to thank the Knights of Columbus for partnering with us and helping us achieve our fundraising goals for a trip to Ottawa from June 30 - July 7, 2017,” said Brownie Leader and District Commissioner Tracey Allen.

Many local organizations have seen the benefit of partnering with Knights of Columbus throughout the years.

J. R. Robson’s Fall Supper was a success yet again! The fundraiser supper fed over 600 people within two sittings, offering salad varieties, roast beef, all sorts of vegetables (many of them home-grown), gravy and other toppings for potatoes and meat, and of course an array of desserts.

Thank you to all community members who donated vegetables to our Fall Supper (with kudos to one of our grandpas who brings two large pails of potatoes every year). Parents, we couldn’t do this without your help! Students, you wonderfully represented our school. A Vermilion resident complimented them: “they were very courteous, helpful and conscientious. Thank you for hosting this wonderful community event.” Special thanks to lead hand, Mrs. Hart, and several staff members who pitched in to make the work lighter.

The Vermilion Public Library has yet again generously donated pumpkins to the

school for students to carve up and decorate. Several students in senior high Art class as well as some of Mr. Zorniak’s Industrial Arts students carved into their jack-olantern skills. Pumpkins were entered into the library’s 5th annual contest.

Outdoor Education 7 and 8 class are doing their environmental part by collecting the classrooms’ paper recyclables and beverage containers this semester.

Junior volleyball athletes have had lots of game time recently. On Monday, October 24 they were in Lloyd at Holy Rosary and then the next day played against St. Jerome’s to capture the Northerns banner. The boys will play again this week. As for the junior girls, they played well in the round robin and placed second in their pool to play in the second and third crossover. The senior girls were in Vegreville’s tournament last weekend. This year’s roster includes Breanna Rainey, Jerianne Bardoel, Courtney Bielech, Pamela Brodbin, Tyra King, Martina

LaBine, Crystal Roach, Allison Schmahl, Alyssia Stenhouse, Brittany Tessier, and Shauna Weimann. Last Thursday to Saturday the school was abuzz with junior girls teams from around the area attending our home tournament, Spooktacular.

Apologies to anyone out there who may have left messages on the school’s phone system in the past couple of weeks; due to technical issues, several of the messages weren’t delivered to recipients and therefore many staff were unable to respond. The issue has been repaired, so please contact the office again if you are still waiting for a response.

Many of our school initiatives to maximize students’ learning experience couldn’t be without others willingness to give. Joe and Colleen Magnusen from Open Excavation Inc. (Winfield, Alberta) generously donated to our school’s breakfast program.

Thank you! Thanks also to Mrs. Wilhelm who maintains the daily breakfast program and completes the behind-the-scenes tasks associated with running it.

The Vermilion Marauders entered their playoff season against Athabasca on Friday October 14. “Our season was successful,” Coach Maier said proudly, “we are beginning to rebuild our football program after graduating nearly half of our team from the 2015 season.” In the 2016 season they won some key games to advance to league playoffs and lost a very close game to Wainwright in the league consolation semi-finals.” Mr. Maier is offering graduating Grade 12’s an opportunity to play football after high school “if they work hard”!

Our in-house VIBE Coach, Mrs. Thompson, is inviting any and all J. R. students to partake in several noon-hour activities throughout the week until the end of December. Mondays is “Artistic Expression”, Wednesdays is “Games!” and students can “Relax and Rejuvenate” on Fridays.

Spooktacular Volleyball Tournament

J. R. Robson School held a ‘Spooktacular Volleyball Tournament’ from October 27 - 29.

The tournament consisted of a 21-team open draw, and an eight-team Grade 7 draw. Teams travelled from Vermilion, Mannville, Paradise Valley, Marwayne,

Wainwright, Provost, Vegreville, Innisfree, Cold Lake, Meadow Lake, Edgerton, Hughenden, Dewberry, Chauvin, Kitscoty, Pierceland, and Lloydminster to compete.

“The Junior Girls Volleyball Team enjoyed having the opportunity to host a tournament, and have the home crowd help cheer for them on the court,” said Coach Kortni Severson.

MUNICIPAL CONSERVATION COORDINATOR The County of Vermilion River and the County of Minburn are seeking a highly motivated person to join our team as Municipal Conservation Coordinator. Key qualifications include a Post Secondary Degree in Agricultural or Environmental Sciences (with equivalent experience considered). The Coordinator delivers the Ag/Enviro program for both Counties. Expertise in riparian area management, soil conservation, grazing management, nutrient management, climate change and extension activities would be an asset.

Key components of the position include: * Aid in development and adoption of management practices to improve environmental sustainability of agriculture producers. * Develop and recommend practices to help landowners better manage their land and water resources. * Assist landowners with developing Environmental Farm Plans and support Growing Forward applications. * Liaise with agribusiness and industry and coordinate and conduct environmental programming. * Use tours, workshops, written articles, and one-on-one work (including farm calls) to inform producers about environmentally sustainable agricultural practices. * Coordinate and administer the agricultural recycling program.

A competitive salary and comprehensive municipal benefits package is available. The successful candidate will be required to provide a criminal record check and drivers abstract, as well as their own vehicle (with paid mileage). Some weekend and evening work may be required. Vermilion 4H Sheep Club was back at it again on October 14 for another year. The general meetings and sheep/goat/clever workshops will be held at the Ag Society Boardroom and Ag Society Sheep Barns.

The Club held its’ election and voted in the Executive, Kaylie, Michaela, Ashley and Maranda. Thank you to all the 4H sheep members who volunteered for other club positions! Also, our parent volunteers to be club leaders! The club will be hosting 4H Regional Volleyball again on December 4.

Vermilion 4H Canine Club started up again on October 23 at the Butler Building from 2 - 4 p.m.

Jr. B. Tigers Hockey

Lots of action filled the Vermilion stadium on October 22, as the Jr. B. Tigers hosted the Frog Lake T-Birds. Frog Lake was able to defeat the Tigers 6 - 3. Scoring for Vermilion was Carter Myhovich, Lucas Dennill, and Evan Bardoel. On October 28, the Jr. B. Tigers hosted the Onion Lake Border Chiefs and were outscored 4 - 2. Scoring for Vermilion was Layne Zack and Brayden Wilson. The Jr. B. Tigers will go on to host Cold Lake on November 5, and Vegreville on November 9.
