MLA Starke Pays Tribute To Former Premier Jim Prentice

PC ML A for Vermilion /Lloydminster Dr. Richard Starke paid tribute to Alberta’s former Premier and Federal Cabinet Minister Jim Prentice, 60, on Friday, following the breaking news that he was killed in a plane crash in British Columbia on Thursday night, October 13.

Prentice was traveling with Dr. Ken Gellatly and Sheldon Reid flying from Kelowna in a Cessna Citation jet en route to Alberta, following a golf trip.

No one, including the pilot Jim Kurk wwsurvived the crash, which the Royal Canadian Mounted Police described as ”unsurvivable.”

“I am very shocked. It is a terrible tragedy. The Prentice family has suffered a huge loss and are double struck, as Ken Gellatly was father-in-law to Jim’s daughter Cassia,” said Starke.

“I first met Jim in May of 2014, I had not met him personally before that. I got to know him quite quickly over the next few months while he was seeking the leadership of our party. He struck me as a very decent and honourable person. He did things that he didn’t need to do, but he did them because he thought they were important and should be done.

One example was when Jim had offered a young man who was working in my office to be his press secretary during his campaign, as he had known him from Ottawa. Jim phoned me in advance and said ‘I feel it is important that you know that I have offered it to him.’ Jim told me because he didn’t want me to feel that he had poached a member of my staff. That was the first time it really struck me, ‘wow this guy really has a great sense of what is right.’

“He had a real heart for rural Alberta and that heart for rural Alberta remained after he became prominent in Calgary.

The compassionate side of Jim Prentice was that he really cared about what was going on in rural Alberta, and not everybody had an opportunity to see that side of him.

When Jim was cabinet minister he initiated the process that led to the resident schools inquiry, and he had a deep sense of connection with our indigenous people. One of the things that Jim often talked about was our need to forge a better and stronger relationship with our indigenous people,” said Starke.

Lakeland College Fitness Programmer Tami Klatt talked about the range of different Winter Fitness Classes available and why it’s important to stay active during the winter months.

Klatt is an AFLCA certified Group Fitness instructor with Portable Equipment specialization.

Having participated in (1) Full Marathon, (8) Half Marathons, too many 10 kms to count and a Women’s Trifitness competition in Las Vegas in 2007, Klatt says she star ted teaching fitness classes because she loves the feeling of helping another person improve their life.

She advises that people try something new with their fitness ritual this winter season.

Bus drivers play an important role in the education of students in rural communities. BTPS contracted bus operators travel over 14,000 km a day in good weather and bad to transport or children safely to and from school. Please do your part to help bus drivers keep our students safe, DO NOT PASS a school bus from either direction when the RED LIGHTS ARE FLASHING. Amber lights are a warning to motorists following or approaching a bus that they are slowing down to make a passenger stop. Passing a school bus puts children at risk. Together we can continue to make the school bus the safest means of student transportation. If you see someone pass a school bus with its red lights flashing, please call your local RCMP to report them, it is a $543 fine and 6 demerit points. Some of our contracted school buses are equipped with video cameras on the outside of their buses to catch violators.

FCC Drive Away Hunger

As part of the 13th Annual ‘FCC Drive Away Hunger’ campaign, Farm Credit Canada (FCC) and their partners have set a goal of providing Canada’s food

banks with four million meals. In the last 12 years, ‘FCC Drive Away Hunger’ has collected more than 27 million meals for food banks across Canada.

On October 8, Vermilion FCC teamed up with the Vermilion Jr. B. Tigers for their 2nd Annual Food Drive. Game patrons brought in food and monetary donations.

In another ef for t to ‘Drive Away Hunger’, the Vermilion FCC was also taking up collections at Mannville School on October 14. Children were enthused to be supporting a worthwhile cause and collected a whopping 888 lbs. of food.

“This year we have been serving more families than any other year, so these volunteers and donations are a really big help. We are so thankful that the children worked so hard for us,” said Mannville Food Bank Coordinator, Amy Jackson.

Food Banks Canada has recorded that 850,000 Canadians are helped by food banks each month and 1.7 million Canadians each year. From 2014 - 2015, Alberta saw a 23% increase in food bank usage.

Wainwright Elementary School also participated in the ‘FCC Drive Away Hunger’ campaign this year by collecting food for the Wainwright Food Bank.

FCC would like to thank all of the communities in the region for the donations they have received so far, and are encouraging

continued support so that ongoing needs can be met throughout the year.

One hundred percent of donations go to the local food bank in each community where they were collected (Vermillion/Mannville/Wainwright). People also have the option of bringing a food or cash donation to the FCC Vermilion Office.

“FCC is calling on local schools, businesses, and agricultural producers to donate food, cash or some of the proceeds from your field, bin, livestock or greenhouse to help the people who rely on Canada’s food banks every month,” said FCC Community Investment Consultant, Susan Cameron.

I very seldom ever express my opinion when it comes to political issues as I am not well versed enough to make comments, but I am observant enough to know when a situation is manipulated.

On October 10, I sat and watched the 2nd Presidential Debate between US presidential nominees Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton and I was a tad bit disgusted with the way the debate was handled by the so-called moderators. As a news person myself (of course not on their level) I completely understand the importance

of maintaining a neutral perspective when reporting on a story, and I do believe it should be carried forth in all aspects of journalism.

The 2nd Presidential Debate was in ‘town-hall style,’ meaning the candidates should face real voters and be subjected to their questions. But in the latest debate, the candidates (mainly Donald Trump) spent more time answering follow-up questions

by CNN’s Anderson Cooper and ABC’s Martha Raddatz then answering questions from the attending and social media audience. Were they trying to get Trump to answer the question regarding the lewd comments he made against women to their satisfaction and not receive his actual answer regarding such comments?

It is also my opinion that the debate was extremely biased. I noticed, as well as my children throughout the debate Trump was consistently interrupted when attempting to answer questions posed by either the audience or the moderators. He spent more time during his two-minute answer period unable to answer fully as the moderators would ask more questions as soon as he began to speak, while Clinton was rarely interrupted by the moderators. Also, when Trumps two - minute time periods were complete, he was quickly told by the moderators to basically shut up while Clinton on many occasions went over her two minute time periods. As I counted, Trump was interrupted more than two dozen times throughout the debate in comparison to Clintons 12

interruptions by the moderators.

Don’t get me wrong I am not a fan of Donald Trump, but I also am not a fan of Hillary Clinton, and if I had to choose between the two, I think it would be a time when I didn’t utilize my right to vote.

My questions are: Can media coverage of news events become biased to the point it can change a person’s opinion? And should news outlets place their opinions in their coverage of news?

I don’t particularly like Donald Trump, but after watching the second debate and observing the biases of the moderators, it did kind of change my opinion of Trump. So, I guess their biased (pro-Clinton) approach backfired on them as I began to think Trump is maybe the lesser of two evils.

Vermilion RCMP Investigate Attempted Home Invasion And Shooting

Vermilion, Alberta – On Oct. 11, 2016 at approximately 4:30 a.m., Vermilion RCMP responded to a report of an attempted home invasion at a residence in the County of Vermilion River. Members attended and found that an armed confrontation had occurred between several unknown suspects and the home

owner.

The suspects tried to gain entry to the residence but were unsuccessful and then fled the area in a vehicle. The 64-year-old victim, who was alone at the residence, was injured by a gunshot wound during the confrontation. He was taken via EMS to hospital with a serious but non-life threatening injury.

Members with the assistance from

neighbouring RCMP detachments made extensive patrols of the area but the vehicle and suspects were not located. The Forensic Identification unit (FIS) and General Investigative Unit (GIS) from Edmonton are assisting with the investigation.

Police believe this was not a random act and there is no danger to the public. As the investigation continues additional details will not be provided.

I know my memory is bad, but I recall a nice autumn evening with a colourful landscape of gold and r e d s w i t h a h i nt of green still in areas, but then I woke up the next morning, and it was winter.

Did I miss the nice October autumn and jump right into winter; it sure felt like it. I didn’t mind the snow all that much when it was dry, but I can’t tolerate wet snow, especially when it ’s mixed with sleet and freezing rain. We woke up to the snow on the past weekend at 4 a.m. to go bow hunting, with one look we knew there was a serious wardrobe change in order. In the old days, I remember the trouble my Uncle Herman went to leveling up his threshing machine and getting the settings to make sure the machine did an efficient job and the sample of grain was clean, and the Cow’s never got sick from too much grain in the straw pile. crawl down the now extremely slipper y ladder. I decided to huddle up and wait for daylight, and although I couldn’t stand much, practice shooting a bow sitting down and to the left of the tree had been done for many years, and the main trail was perfect to the left.

At daylight instead of a welcome warm sunrise, the wind and falling slush grew more intense, and of course, the temperature dropped another 5 degrees and ice clung to everything. I kept chipping the ice off my arrow for just in case I had to shoot the bow. I was seriously considering calling it a day when I saw four ghosts moving toward me in a blur. The ghosts materialized into elk that seemed to appear out of nowhere and to float towards me very quickly in dead silence; that’s when the huge bull elk also materialized following the cow elk. My first instinct was to stand, my foot slipping as soon as it moved reminded me that wasn’t gonna happen, but all was good as they were heading straight towards the trail to my left, just as I had practised and daydreamed about so much.

That ’s pret t y much where things went from bad to worse, there were two moo moo cows hunkered under the brush near the stand and front of the trail, as the elk were in perfect range the herd cow saw the moo moos. She then did the unexpected and turned in a 90-degree turn to my right, normally not a problem if I was standing as I can turn my whole body and still make a shot to the left. Sure enough, the huge bull turned and followed the herd cow elk, and they all stopped just mere

yards or meters from my stand, I drew my bow back with ice falling making nice through entire draw, but they still stood there perfectly broadside; I tried to spin my body as much as possible sitting down and felt confident |I could shoot efficiently. I concentrated and focused on the big bull, releasing my arrow into the foggy mist. Instantly I heard a loud “smack ” elk scattered in all directions, all except the bull; he stood there wondering what was happening obviously unscathed. He spun and disappeared into the mist as fast as they appeared. I sat then pondering in shock, did I just miss a giant bull elk at ten yards, and after I stopped shivering…I will just say it was from the cold; I climbed down out of the tree stand. After a search I found my arrow totally in a 90-degree angle direction of where the bull stood, obviously a deflection, after an investigation it was obvious I had hit a tree in front of the bull.

I would also like to say it was the foggy mist that obscured that small tree, but there is a chance I was so focused on the bull and my shot I didn’t even see the brush. If I was to make up a list with all the things that could go wrong with a shot, it happened right there however I was thankful it was a complete miss and not a marginal wound.

I know I could hit a golf ball at that distance all day long under normal circumstances; I just missed a critter the size of my truck so close I could see it blink; it was very humbling, to say the least. So with my tail tucked, I h e a d e d b a c k o u t w i t h “ M u r p hy ”

wonder how come a threshing machine was so carefully levelled so it could work efficiently and here’s a combine travelling up and down hills and on sidehills too, and expected to do a job saving the grain. Always made me wonder. I used to tease the Massey person that if you had a Massey Combine and a Welger baler you needn’t have to take grain from a grainery to feed your cattle, they already had all the grain they could stand!! My brother’s father in law in the early days of combining would go south with the first self-propelled old Massey 21’s and started in Kansas and work north.

They custom combined and gained knowledge of combines that he passed on to brother and I. Those older machines took a good deal of time to adjust to different crops and conditions which could change as the day went from morning dew causing tough threshing to hot sunny

midday to when it started to get tough again with the evening dew. A good operator would be watching almost hopper to hopper and watch the grain coming into the tank and checking the threshed straw as the day progressed. Nowadays these adjustments can be made right from the operator’s seat. In our early days you had to do it with the machine stopped and in some cases even change drive sprockets and lengthen drive chains and belts.

That is if you wanted to do a good job.

Yes, the indispensable thing was and still is a caring operator!

These new wonder machines have speed monitors on all main shafts, and any trouble is soon spotted. Yeah, remember those times the return elevator would plug, and if you didn’t notice, I’m sure any old timer can relate the experience. Same with the straw walkers and a totally plugged machine, that would require a chore of hours to undo.

The caramelized topping can be made under the broiler of your oven, but there are also special kitchen blowtorches that can quickly caramelize the sugar topping. For a really show y deser t,

liqueur can be poured on top of the hardened caramelized topping and then lit on fire as a flambé.

Creme Brulee 2 cups heavy cream 1/4 cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 4 egg yolks Additional granulated sugar for the caramelized topping.

In a heav y bot tom, pot heat the cream with the sugar and vanilla. Stir to dissolve the sugar. Beat the egg yolks with a fork until creamy and pour it into the warmed sugar and cream mixture. Continue to cook until heated well throughout. Do not bring to a boil. Pour the hot mixture into 4 buttered ramekins. Place the ramekins in a pan of hot water, so that the

Miss Oohohh loves ice-cream, so a small ice cream birthday cake is in order, although most dogs are lactose intolerant, she enjoys a couple spoonful’s without issues, which she enjoys to the fullest and always wants more.

Her first year went fast, and I wish many…much more, I am sure she was the only one enjoying the snow this past weekend, so I will harness her up and get her pulling the dogsled.

That might sound strange, but for her breed… Alaskan Malamute, pulling a dogsled is what they love to do, for some working is their total enjoyment in life

As I drive the country, the old farmer in me watches the fields and crops and this year the heavy crops and wet conditions perhaps have made the volunteer grain come up and betray the presence of grain left in the field. The evidence is plain. It looks like a green carpet all across the field. I guess those efficient straw choppers and spreaders have done a good job. Well, we know a bushel or two properly spaced can seed an acre. There has to be considerable more than that to make a carpet like that. So I’m thinking even with all the advantage of all the modern technology we still have to have an operator who cares and does know what he’s doing, STILL!!

Alternately you can use a kitchen torch to caramelize the sugar.

Serve chilled. French chef Julia Child r e c o m m e n d s fr e ezi n g t h e c o o ke d Crème Brulee for 15 minutes before adding the sugar and putting it under the broiler. If you go from freezer to hot broiler, be sure your ramekins can handle the temperature change without breaking.

Time To Be Wildlife Alert

Ver milion RCMP Serg eant Jane Boehr advises drivers to take caution on the roads during this time of year and always be prepared to respond if you see an animal near the road.

“Reducing your speed, being extracautious during night-time travel and watching out for wildlife is three effective ways to reduce your chances of colliding with an animal on the road this winter.

People need to be animal alert, if you slow down too much you can be a hazard. Watch the ditches. There is signage where there is a higher concentration of wildlife and be mindful of those areas.

If your vehicle is drivable after a collision and the animal is off the road, you can report it the next day. If the animal needs to be put down you can give the RCMP a call. Considering half of all collisions on rural roads involve animals, we can make our roads a lot safer by being aware of the risks,” said Sgt Boehr.

Statistics stated on the government website that 54% of crashes on rural h i g h w ay s i n A l b e r t a i n v o l v e d a n animal; ‘Over the last five years, onethird of all animal-involved collisions occurred between 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Of all the months of the year, the most wildlife collisions - about 18 per cent - occur in November. This represents 13,250 animal crashes in the last five years.’

The Alber ta Government website also stated that the number of collisions involving animals has consistently doubled during the month of November; ‘On average, there were 1,249 animal crashes each month but, in November, the average climbed to

2,650 animal crashes.

Generally, animals are at tracted to roads because they like to eat the roadside vegetation, they are attracted

Senior’s Curling League Changes Days

This curling season the Senior’s League is expanding to include casual curlers of all ages, those who would like to curl, but cannot commit to a particular team or league on a regular basis.

Senior’s and casual curling this season is every Monday and Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., which is a change from curling on Tuesday and Thursday in previous years. Those who show up each day pick a card from a box to determine teammates,

and the sheet of ice on which to curl. Teammates then decide who plays which position.

Every day you curl with someone different.

New curlers are welcome, you will meet a lot of new people. Sturling games (two person teams using six rocks with no up and down the ice sweeping) are also available.

Senior’s and casual curling operates on a “come when you can” basis. You may be able to play only on Tuesdays, or perhaps this week but not next. This format will suit you well. Although most participants are senior’s, we do welcome casual curlers of

all ages.

The fee for the season is $200. Those who curl on a casual basis pay $10 per game. The annual fee includes funspiels at Christmas and wind- up. The Senior’s Curling Club’s mission is to provide a little exercise, a lot of fun, and great socializing.

Curling is scheduled to begin Monday, October 31, 2016 and will run through March 2017.

Nearly 100 years of history now lies in the few bricks remaining at the Northwest corner of 50th Avenue and 50th Street in Kitscoty, Alberta.

The Canadian Bank Of Commerce building was originally built on the location in the early 1900’s and closed their doors on April 30, 1940. A cheque to the Kitscoty branch dated 1919, can be viewed in the ‘Village of Kitscoty Minute

by Minute’ history book.

With progression after the First World War and entering into the Second World War, a higher priority was placed on education and with the school board experimenting to find new arrangements to provide accommodations, they opted for dormitories.

The bank building reopened the same year as a girl’s dormitory. With students travelling from as far as the Nor th Saskatchewan River and the Battle River; dormitories were the only opportunity for many students to attend high school, as country schools only instructed up to Grade 9.

One of the 13 girls at the Kitscoty Dormitory in 1940, Betty Lysons, remembered becoming close friends with the other students.

“We each brought produce from home giving credit towards our fees. We didn’t have power or water in the country, so we were lucky to be in such a building. In the winter, when the weather was too rough to travel home, we were permitted to stay; and with frozen water in the cistern, Mr. Wright, who was the caretaker, would carry water from the Village well all the way upstairs for cooking and washing. It was very rudimentary the first year. We brought beds from home and teachers volunteered supervising homework in the evenings,” said Lysons.

In her second year at the dormitory,

Lysons contracted measles and had to be isolated. After recuperating and completing her courses, she moved to Toronto to complete a business course. She was employed there for two years before coming back to Vermilion to run a country store.

“Mid war, employment became a lot easier for women. I wouldn’t have had that opportunity without the dorm experience. It gave young girls the confidence to go out into the world,” said Lysons.

The girl’s dormitory was moved to the old Kitscoty Hospital, and the Kitscoty Boy’s Dormitory took over the bank building in 1943 housing five students. The dormitory added more students each year until it was at full capacity in 1947 housing 33 children.

Bill McGrath attended from 1946 –1949 and remembered how the new Scottish Matron, Mrs. Miller kept order and did the major cooking. “’Git ye oot o’ the kitchen with that dirty cloute!’ she used to say, which meant, ‘Get out of the kitchen with that dirty cloth,” said McGrath who was a little alarmed the first few times he had been reprimanded with an accent.

“Steel bunk beds were used, and at times, the person on the bottom bunk would kick the top bunk high enough to hit the ceiling.

We alternated weekly chores and in three years living together made lifelong friends. Sports were very important, as well as the Wednesday night dances,” added McGrath.

“After being drafted into the new Air Cadets squadron, some of the boys from the Kitscoty Dormitory appeared at the Vermilion Fair Parade. There we were inspected by Canada’s Governor General, and were subsequently given the privilege of flying to Abbotsford, B.C. to attend cadet summer camp,” said McGrath.

and the girls and boys shared the bank building as a dormitory being kept in separate wings. Franklin Wolters attended at that time and remembered the day the girls pushed their bedding down the stairs.

“The boys not being allowed on the stairs as they were marked a ‘no go zone’, simply ran across the dining room and stole their blankets. We were allowed to mingle during chore times, though. On one occasion as I was washing the floor, the matron didn’t think I was using enough water, so she kicked the whole bucket over,” said Wolters.

Everyone that attended the dormitory appreciated that they had a place to stay in town so they could attend high school, and they also appreciated the comradery with their fellow students.

In more recent years, the building was used as ‘Ye Old Bank’ Antique Store, and now is demolished. The current owners were unable to sell it as there was asbestos behind the siding and on the pipes.

With too high a cost to get the building up to current codes, they plan to sell it as a vacant lot.

The Accountability Problem In Youth Sports

Parents, you are accountable to your athletes to give them what they ask for and what they need. Some ideas are: Do not coach from the sidelines - Perhaps do not even cheer from the sidelines (nearly 100% of high school kids tell us they would rather their parents say nothing during games).

Do not disrespect the officials, the coach, or the opposing fans -Surround kids with positive role models.

- Help them find their passion instead of deciding what they should be passionate about.

- Ensure they have balance, a life away from sport, and they become quality human beings.

- Ensure that sports are an extension of the things you value at home, such as integrity, effort, and sportsmanship.

- Value their effort, focus and the process of learning, not simply results.

- Be patient, as talent development is ugly. Just be a fan and love watching them play Parents are also accountable to coaches, sports organizations, and officials. They must not interfere with the coach/player relationship (unless it is unsafe). They must support our great coaches and stop micromanaging every aspect of our kids’ teams, who plays, what

position they play, etc. Great coaches can change a child’s life for the better if we let them do their work! Struggle is good, and talent needs trauma, so embrace it!

Finally parents, we must start holding each other accountable in the stands for our behavior. We must create an environment where unruly behavior is no longer tolerated. We must leave the officials alone. We lose 70-80% of first year officials in youth sports because it’s just not worth it to them. If we want good officials, we better create an environment where they want to work. We have the power to change things if we are first willing to change ourselves.

Athletes, you are accountable to make the athletic experience a better one, one that will serve you for your entire life. You can do this by: - Do not act entitled, and for your own sake realize that everything you get in life will need to be earned.

- Show up early, stay late, outwork your teammates and the opponent, and expect nothing except the opportunity to compete.

- Be positive, and don’t be, as Jon Gordon calls it, an “energy vampire.”

- Learn to be a teammate who focuses on what she can give, instead of what she can get - Ask to be held accountable for the commitments it takes to achieve your goals.

- Thank a coach who never lets you

Celebrating Rowe’s Retirement

The community gathered to celebrate Nelson Rowe’s retirement from Vermilion Chr ysler on October 14, during a come and go beef on a bun lunch.

Maybe you love to cook and bake- you could make specialty jams, pickles, chocolates; anything really and sell them at farmers markets. If you have the skill for baking like a friend of mine does you could make specialty cakes for birthdays, weddings or any special occasion.

Have you ever wanted to start your own business but thought there was no way for you to come up with the mega amount of funding it often requires to start your business? As a previous hair salon owner, I know the cost of starting your own business. It isn’t cheap!

Over the years I have researched business ideas a person could start up for a low cost. It is surprising how you can make an extra income with some pretty easy and basic business ideas for next to nothing start up costs.

Do you have a flare for fashion or a love of shopping? Why not become a fashion consultant or a personal shopper? There is no formal education required. Many people like myself either don’t have a flare for fashion or hate to shop, you could offer your services to help them shop. Christmas season is just around the corner, and there are a lot of people who struggle every year trying to come up with that special gift for their special other half, an employee, a parent, etc. Maybe there is a gentleman who has that special first date and has no idea how to dress to impress. The service you provide could be for many different reasons and catered around the client.

Another great idea, in my opinion, is to become a virtual assistant. You can work from home assisting busy business people sort through emails, post to social media and help keep them on schedule. Pop around to small businesses or even larger scaled business and offer your services. The main c ost woul d be to purchase a computer if you h av e n ’ t g o t o n e and the cost of

someone to shovel their snow. You could also transition your business to lawn maintenance in the spring and summer months to raking leaves in the fall.

Just recently I saw a lady on Facebook offering dog walking services. What an awesome service for busy people or even the elderly who love their pets dearly but are unable to walk them in the winter due to icy conditions. I know if I had a big dog, I would certainly hire her to walk my dog for an hour during the day while I was at work.

So as you can see, there are so many

small business or home business ideas out there. You may not make a full living off of them, but they could certainly help bring in extra income. Do your research, there are so many ideas out there that cost very little to set up. Maybe someday I will even give my hand a try at starting a business on the side. For me, it would have something to do with the elderly or pets as they are both something I am very passionate about. Find something you like and give it a whirl, many of the rich and famous started out the same way with a small business idea.

This year’s Small Business Awards Gala will be a classy affair, taking place at the Pomeroy Inn Hotel in Vermilion at 6 p.m. on October 19. Red Feather Ridge

will cater for the evening; serving a roast beef dinner.

“We are expecting a crowd of approximately 100-120 people to attend. We have 39 nominees in total. The winners have been chosen but they will not be disclosed until the awards night. This year we have a new category called the ‘Junior Entrepreneur’ for young people. Each of the winners will receive a trophy,” said McMinis.

This year’s nominee categories include Employee of the Year, Business of the Year, Spirit of Vermilion, Rookie Business of the Year, Junior Entrepreneur and Employer of the Year.

How To Successfully Work From Home

Whether you own a small business or work for a large company, chances are you work from home at least part of the time. The latest Statistic Canada data shows nearly two million of us are working remotely at least once a week, and that number is growing as we learn more about the benefits of telecommuting.

There is often the misconception that working from home is not as serious or demanding as in-person labour, but Dr. Lori LaCivita, director of Walden University’s industrial and organizational psychology graduate program, says this is a mistake.

“It’s actually a lot harder to work remotely — it takes more effort to be effective in this environment. You need to prioritize, triage, and structure your day to be productive.”

Whether you’re an employee, manager,

student, or freelancer, you’re sure to benefit from her top three tips for working from home.

1. Communication is key.

“Working remotely requires a higher level of communication since you can’t pick up on nonverbal cues and don’t have the in-person social interactions that office workers have, so virtual workers need to communicate more frequently with managers and in-office employees,” says Dr. LaCivita. Communicating helps you feel connected and fights feelings of isolation.

Get creative and use technology — instant messaging, conference calls, Skype — whatever gets you collaborating with your team.

2. Be the captain of your own ship.

You need to work independently and think through things on your own, as you may not have access to someone who can

provide immediate, real-time guidance.

Attending an online university is a great way to prepare for and land a virtual position, because online classes can help you develop the self-direction skills needed for success.

To be a successful virtual employee, you need to have a good understanding of technology and how to use it properly — if you can’t be comfortable with technology, you

can’t work remotely. Always have a backup plan if technology fails: get a landline and save work in multiple locations. Identify local coffee shops where you can connect online should the power ever go out, or get a mobile hotspot solution like a good cell phone data plan or a mifi connection.

Enrolment Growth Continues At Lakeland College

For the third year in a row, Lakeland College’s fall term enrolment has increased.

As of Sept. 27, there were 2,292 full-time and part-time students in credit programming at Lakeland College. At the same time last year there were 2,234 students enrolled. In 2013, there were 2,098 students in the fall term.

“We’re very happy with the growth we’ve experienced, especially in full-time enrolment,” says Allen Verbeek, Lakeland’s registrar and dean of Student Services.

“We have 1,800 full-time students, a growth of nine per cent from last year when we had 1,654 full-time students at this time.”

University transfer, business administration and agricultural sciences experienced the largest growth in full-time students.

Human services programs including early learning and child care, educational assistant and American Sign Language and Deaf culture studies reported the biggest gains in part-time students thanks to the success of online and blended delivery courses.

“Much of this growth can be attributed to the efforts of people in our academic schools to increase student access to postsecondary learning opportunities,” says Mike Crowe, Lakeland’s vice president,

In just one short week everyone – friends, family, fans, followers, committees, members, partners and all others – will know who is crowned the 2016 Season IV Bull Riders Canada National Champion!

Friday, October 21st at 7 p.m. is the first Long Round of competition where you will see all of the Top 30 riders compete on the one bull they’ve been drawn.

Following the Long Round will be the Canadian Global Grudge Match which pits the Top 5 Bulls in BRC versus the Top 5 Cowboys in BRC. If the Cowboy makes a qualified ride, he is awarded $1000.00 on the spot; if he’s bucked off by the bull, the Stock Contractor wins the $1000.00!

There are no points earned toward the National Title; if the cowboy makes a qualified ride, the money is his. St. Jerome’s Annual H i g h S c h o o l Awar d s Ceremony was held o n F r i d a y, O c t o b e r 7. Students, parents, family members and staff gathered together in the gymnasium to celebrate the accomplishments our high school students for the 2015 -2016 school year. Mr. MacMillan welcomed all gathered and then Tenille Chase and Ethan Campbell took over the MC duties. After “O Canada”, the “Prayer of St. Francis” and a few congratulatory messages award presentations began. Grade 9-12 Honors were given to a total of 65 students. Academic Awards were presented to Grade 9-12 students. Congratulations to Highest Average Overall recipients: Grade 9 – Sadie Granigan, Grade 10 – Shae Collins and Jennifer Peterson, Grade 11 – Karley Dieken, and Grade 12 – Bailey Koebel. The evening continued with Leadership/Citizenship Awards being presented. Congratulations to all the students who received these awards as they are given to students who display leadership both at the school and community level. The final award of the evening, “Spirit of St. Jerome’s” Award is given to a student who displays the qualities of all St. Jerome’s School represents. Congratulations to this year’s recipient, Cain Collins. St. Jerome’s School would like to thank all of our donors whose generosity makes this evening possible and for their support to our students and their accomplishments. T h e Ve r m i l i o n F i r e D e p a r t m e n t visited Mrs. Roth’s Grade 4 class on Thursday, October 6. The children were ver y excited to meet three of the department’s members, Chief Bill Roth and Firefighters Derek Krys and Tim Harvey. Chief Roth spoke to the class about fire safety in their homes.

The firefighters showed the children their bunker gear and breathing apparatus. Following the presentation, the kids were thrilled to get a short ride in the fire truck!

On Friday, September 30, the St. Jerome’s Cross-Country running team participated in the Vermilion Autumn Challenge at the Vermilion Provin-

c ial Par k . In t his final rac e of the season for Jr. High runners, we had finishers Sean Ulrich, Ilijah Downer, Mary Ulrich, and Chase Stoltz, with a Se c ond Plac e for Grad e 8 B oys for Jayce Sweeney. Our High School girls ran very well, Breanna Maughan placed First for Grade 11 Girls, and for Grade 12 girls, Kaylie Krys finished 4th and Anna Ulrich placed First.

Congratulations to the High School Cross Countr y running team for a strong per formance at Zones on Wednesday, October 5! We had five runners finish in the top 18 of their age group and qualified for Provincials.

Congratulations to Anna Ulrich who placed 1st for Senior girls, Anastasia McCullough placing 7th for Junior girls, Breanna Maughan for 9 th in Intermediate girls, Seth Mansfield for

15th in Junior boys, and Kaylie Krys for 18th in Senior girls. These runners will represented St. Jerome’s in Cochrane this past Saturday, October 15 Congratulations to the Grade 9 Girls Team on winning their home tournament. They demonstrated terrific teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the weekend. Congratulations to the Grade 8 Girls Volleyball team for their terrific result at their home tournament. The Grade 8 Girls defeated the J.R. Robson Grade 9 girls team in the semifinals and claimed a silver medal in a hard fought battle against the St. Jerome’s Grade 9 team in the finals.

For senior high students, their first progress reports of the year were sent home on Friday. Parents who wish to meet and chat with teachers in person are invited to book an interview for the night of Wednesday, October 26.

Cross country finals for junior high athletes were hosted by J. R. at the Vermilion Provincial Park on Thursday, October 13. Prior to that, J. R. also hosted cross country Zones with

6 athletes qualifying for Provincials in Cochrane on Friday, October, 14.

The Vermilion Marauders recently their last regular season game 51-10 at home vs. Vegreville and star ted playoffs on Friday October 14 against Athabasca.

J. R.’s annual Fall Supper is around the corner! In efforts to raise funds for our sports teams, starting this week students will be selling tickets to the event to take place at 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. on October 20, 2016. Tickets may also be purchased at the school office. $12.00/adult, $10.00/child Grade 1 to 6, $10.00/Seniors 60+, preschool and

In August, Melnyk also took first place in the NKBA 2015-16 Charette Design Competition. Downing came in second place and Rebecca Kurczaba received honourable mention.

All of these students graduated from the program in June. Honoured by the accolades, Melnyk says she was inspired to do her best and make the most out of the program by Lakeland’s award-winning interior design grads and instructors.

“I remember the students before me and what they accomplished. It’s very motivating,” says Melnyk, who graduated with distinction and now works as an interior design technologist at Henry Downing Architects in Saskatoon, Sask.

“Lakeland’s instructors were always willing to help you and make sure you understood concepts. Everyone was sosupportive of what we were all doing. The studio was a great place to learn – it didn’t feel like a typical classroom.”

M elnyk ’s award -winning k itc hen design for the Schoolhouse Charm Design Competition emphasized symmetrical balance, maximized seating, grey cabinetry and a number of features customized to the clients’

requests. According to the clients, “ the reason we chose the winning d e s i g n w a s t h a t t h e l ay o u t b e s t suited our family of six. We loved the colour scheme and how the materials selected came together with both an old charm and new modern feel. It is beautiful and we are so excited to see the final outcome.”

For her Schoolhouse Charm design, Melnyk received $2,500 and a trip to Orlando, Fla., for the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show in January 2017, and $5,000 for winning the Charette Design Competition. “To now star t my career off on such a high note, I couldn’t have asked for any thing more,” says Melnyk. “Thank you to L akelan d – you have an ama zing program.”

Lakeland’s interior design technology program was also recognized with the NKBA 2015 Excellence in Education Award in the fall. Lakeland is one of only 10 post-secondary institutions in North America to receive this award.

Accredited by the NKBA, Lakeland’s interior design technology program is a two-year diploma program based at the Vermilion campus. Students learn in a studio setting where they master design fundamentals, drafting, space planning and more. Learn more at lakelandcollege.ca/design.

We would like to say a big thank you to all parents who took the time to complete the survey regarding Muffin Morning. The feedback mentioned that the morning was appreciated as it did not interfere with evening activities and routines. Bus drivers, custodians, maintenance, administrative assistants, librarians, instructional assistants, teachers, administration, and central office staff are individually recognized for each five years of service they give to the division. Vermilion Elementary School News

VES has once again been invited to participate in the Roots of Empathy (ROE) Program. This program teaches children about feelings - their own and that of others. Once every three weeks baby Elle and baby Rian and their parents will visit the Grade 2 classrooms. Trained ROE instructor, Mrs. Moses, will lead the children in predicting and cheering when their ROE baby reac hes the “d evelo pment al mile stones” of the first year. Mrs. Moses also coaches the children in observing the baby and reading the cues the baby gives as to how the baby is feeling. She uses this discussion as a lever for the children to talk about their own emotions and to understand how their classmates feel. For more than ten years across Canada, internationally, and right here at VES, thousands of children are learning respect and care for one another with the lessons started through their Roots of Empathy baby. We appreciate the generous support from the Town of Vermilion and the County of Vermilion River FCSS. A healthy school community is one that supports the wellness of all its members. (e.g., students, staff, parents, administrators, community partners) and continually strengthens its capacity as a healthy setting for living, learning, and working. At VES we work very hard to provide a healthy school community to all our members. Things that make

a healthy school community include a nurturing social environment where students feel cared for, a healthy physical environment that ensures that the “healthy choice is the easy choice”, physical activity woven into the daily routine, all subject areas reflecting and supporting the message of “health”. We at VES continually strive to provide all of the above to our school family. To say the start of the season has had some ups and downs is an understatement. The Tigers kicked off the season on the road in Onion Lake on September 30. The game got off to a great start for the Tigers as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead.

Unfortunately, the hockey gods had other plans as the game was postponed until a later date as an issue with the ice conditions forced the cancellation. A date has not been chosen yet.

The Tigers hit the road again Friday, October 7, for a date with the Cold Lake Ice. The Tigers came out firing early and often pumping 12 shots on goal. Lucas Dennill potted his first of the season on the power play to give the jungle cats a 1-0 lead heading into the 2nd. The Ice came back hard in the second but first year Tiger net-minder Dakota Kenyon kept the Ice at bay stopping

all 12 shots. Veteran forward Dalyn Borysiuk used his trademark speed to put the Tigers up 2-0 with his first of the year with a man short.

The third saw the Ice throw everything at the Tigers, drilling 15 shots on goal. The Tigers surrendered the lead and headed to overtime. Both teams exchanged opportunities; however, this game was destined for a shootout. Both goaltenders were on point as one round after the next passed by. Returning right winger Brayden Wilson stepped up in the seventh round and snuck one under the blocker to go ahead. Kenyon made the next stop to secure the win for the yellow and black.

The Tigers returned to home action for the home opener on October 8, as the always tough Killam Wheat Kings rolled in to town. The Wheat Kings put on a shooting gallery all night, firing a total of 41 shots on net. Killam jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the

Tigers Layne Zack and Carter Myhovich did their best to get the team rallied with a couple of majors; unfortunately it didn’t pan out as the Tigers dropped a 4-1 decision. The lone bright spot was Maguire Blair, the younger brother of last year’s captain, Nolan; scored his first NEAJBHL goal. This game also marked the second Annual Food Drive.

Vermilion Folk Club Hosts Phyllis Sinclair

Rich in history and vocal range, Phyllis Sinclair entertained approximately 80 people at the Vermilion Legion on October 15.

Opening for Sinclair was another talented artist, Peter Nolan. His edgy soothing voice was a fabulous fit for the Cajun song that he sang, as well as his hear t felt song writ ten about personal experiences in the Southern States.

Sinclair’s years of international singer/ songwriter experience made her performance easy to enjoy, but it seemed the crowd was most connected by her storytelling ability.

“The smaller stages are nice because you can build a rapport with the audience. You have more time to let them into your story,” said Sinclair.

Sinclair’s Manitoba Cree background, along with having to find ways to escape inner city life in her youth led her to develop a unique musical craft.

Her natural ability to connect with the audience was deepened as she sang and told stories of her life experiences.

She won the crowd over with lyrics that

encouraged the overcoming of circumstance.

“We all have things thrown in our path that can make us stumble. My family didn’t have much money when I moved to Winnipeg at age ten. It was a very tough existence, and my siblings and I were fortunate to have a loving grandmother instilling values in us to avoid us from being sucked into the low socioeconomic situations found there at the time,” said Sinclair.

Her music shone a light on these events and how she was able to overcome them. She also shared about her family and indigenous community describing the many positive things they brought to her life.

“There’s more to life than circumstance,” said Sinclair.

Accompanying her on lead guitar was Paul Bergeron.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to host great Canadian artists and would like to thank the community for their support,” said Folk Club Treasurer, Gwen Gochee.

The Vermilion Folk Club next event will feature Ken Stead at the Vermilion Featured artist Phyllis Sinclair was hosted by the Vermilion Folk Club, and performed at the Legion on November 19.

Vermilion Rock Heads Into The Season With A Win!

The Vermilion Rock Hockey Team held their first exhibition game on home ice against Elk Point on October 15, af ter poor road conditions cancelled their October 14, game.

Tons of energy in the first period paid of f earning them three goals, scored by Stephen Simmons, Trent Dutchak, and Adam Webb.

During the second period, player s b e g an to l o s e t h e ir l e g s a b i t and allowed Elk Point to score two goals. Elk Point acquired 15 penalties throughout the game including two players thrown out, while the Rock had nine penalties.

The Rock got back to business in the third period. Wade Farkash scored the final goal bringing the final score to 4 - 2 in favour of the Vermilion Rock.

“We’ve got our work cut out for us.

The Sask-Alta Senior Hockey League has 15 teams and was split into two divisions this ye ar, s o r et u r n i n g to the playof fs will be a little tougher. As well, we lost a number of v e t e r a n p l ay e r s , b u t have some younger guys from Vermilion filling the void. Instead of the regular average age b e i n g 2 5 – 3 0 ye a r s old, these players are only 19 – 21 years old, so there’s a lot of new energy. It’s going to be an exciting year!” said Coach Darcy Fadden.
