College Crews Compete At Vermilion Rowing Regatta

T h e Ve r m i l i o n P r o v i n c i a l Park bustled with activity as onlooker s, sup p or ter s and par ti c ipants turned out for both the Head of the Vermilion Regatta and the Rustlers cross-country running Grand Prix on September 24.

The Head of the Regatta is held every three years in Vermilion and is the first race of the intercollegiate season.

Crews travelled to compete from the University of Calgar y and the Univer sit y of Alber ta, as well as club teams from Cold Lake, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Leduc, Lacombe and Lloydminster, with roughly 150 competitors in total participating.

Despite the very blustery conditions and choppy water the Lakeland Rustler crew rowed hard and finished strong.

“The weather wasn’t great. Unfortunately, the winds and water were real rough but the crews rowed on strong despite the conditions,” says Walsh, head coach of the Rustler Crew.

Walsh pushed his team, which had 18 members, hard during twice-

a-day practices in the lead up to the event.

Rather than racing head-to-head, the teams c om peted ag ainst the clock on a 3.5 km course.

A large crowd of supporters gathered down by the Vermilion River and watched the boats up close, learning more about the sport and cheering on the action.

The Rustlers will compete again in Calgary on October 1 and again at the Western Canadian University Championships on October 16, in Burnaby, B.C. The Nationals will take place in early November in Welland, Ontario.

The Rustlers cross-country running team was also competing at the Vermilion Provincial Park on September 24 with the Rustler team hosting the third grand prix of the Alber ta Colleges Athletic Conference season. Women and men raced in both 5 km and 8 km races.

“Eighty-nine runners in total registered for the race,” confirmed Run Co-coordinator Tami Klatt. Eleven athletes in total competed on the Rustlers cross-country running team.

Robert and Barb Snelgrove and their family returned on September 21, from France where they continued filming a documentary on 44 missing Canadian soldiers, including WWI Veteran relative, Thomas Alban Snelgrove.

‘The Search For The Lost Heroes Of Vimy’ is a documentary following this journey and is set to air on the History Channel in April of 2017.

“Upon arriving at the Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, we met four families linked to us by the fate of our relatives; buried in a lost grave site on Vimy Ridge. Joining us was a couple from Oregon, U.S.A, a mother and daughter from Coutts, Alberta, a fellow from Ottawa, and a family from Toronto.

A segment was filmed next to the Eiffel Tower in Paris as part of their welcome to France. The effort to document their journey continued as they travelled by van to Arras; the nearest town to the Vimy Ridge Memorial. It was there that they met the rest of the production crew including Norm Christie; the host of the documentary and renowned WWI expert. The next morning they travelled to a Canadian memorial atop Hill 145 of Vimy Ridge.

“Everything we did was filmed; right from

the parking lot to the memorial,” said Robert Snelgrove.

The film crew spent a lot of time capturing each person’s expressions and reaction to finding their family member’s name on the memorial.

“The extra time it took really let us appreciate the beauty and the simplicity of the monument. With the enormity of the sacrifice of the 11,000 soldiers whose names are carved on it. It became very apparent that this would be a very emotional trip for all of us,” said Snelgrove.

Next, the families were filmed at the Notre Dame de Lorette that includes a French chapel and military cemetery containing 22,000 crosses and 44,000 bodies. Across the road, was the International Memorial Ring of Remembrance; which was added within the last few years. Inside the ring are bronze plates that have 576,000 names inscribed on them. The names are those of WWI soldiers that died on both sides of the conflict from 1914 - 1918.

Once again the cameras recorded the families finding their relative’s names on the Ring of Remembrance.

Conquering Winter Time Blues

Although the calendar states it’s only fall, parts of Alberta have already experienced the wrath of Old Man Winter with 30 cm of snow in the Banff and Sundre areas. I don’t know about you, but, I am not ready for winter. I often experience SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), a depression thought to be associated with a lack of light in late autumn and throughout winter. However, for me it tends to be associated with the thought of winter coming. As many of you know, I am not a lover of the cold and snowiness of winter.

We don’t need a psychiatrist to realize

that weather often affects our mood. If we have a rainy day many of us will feel gloomy and sad. If the day is sunny we all seem to have that extra pep in our step. If you are someone like me who year after year find yourself severely down in the dumps during the winter months, there is a good chance you are experiencing SAD. Research has shown that SAD is more prevalent in areas that experience long harsh winters than areas with shorter winters; thus explaining why SAD is doubly prevalent here in Canada over other places in the world. SAD presents similarly to other forms of depression so it is best to see your doctor if you suspect you are experiencing SAD. You may wonder how you can conquer or at least alleviate the symptoms of these

Long about this time of year when the leaves start turning and the crops are starting to look like harvest is coming, my thoughts are always coming back nowadays to the fall I decided If I was ever going to learn to fly it would be now or never.

A guy who worked for the air radio station at the airport had started to recruit people who wanted to take flying lessons and had phoned me remembering my talk of doing that same thing. We’d had a good year, but we had an early frost and it made the idea of profits kind of shaky as I remember.

The calls kept coming and I was wondering how I could ever manage. It seemed every friend and family member was telling me not to be so foolish, I guess that really convinced me to do the opposite of what everybody said and do the one thing

I dreamed of doing since I was a boy… fly a plane and be like a bird. It seemed like a dream coming true when I made the trip to Vermilion and went to the man at the airport who was signing recruits.

I said I’d appreciate doing my flying in the early morning when the dew was on the crop and by golly, they agreed.

I was pleased and by all the odds against I even came up with enough money to get started. I was told a man with a wife and five kids should know better than to squander my money like that, luckily for him, the urge I had to give him a knuckle sandwich wasn’t obeyed. I remember now all the butterflies and excitement I was feeling as I drove to town and saw the little green and cream Cessna 150 sitting there by the airport shack, all tied down and ready to be stirred into life.

We were in the plane finally and Roger (my instructor) showed me all the controls and how to check the altimeter and set the gyro compass and the two magneto switches, wow there seemed to be so much to learn. Yes I was taught to check and memorize so that nothing would be missed; it wouldn’t be easy but I knew it was well worth it. It seemed like forever when we were waiting to start and the tension was certainly building.

You have to switch to the proper magneto so that the engine wouldn’t kick back on the starter, and give the proper amount of prime a little shot.

You hit the starter and you see the prop flick by a few times before the engine catches and it becomes a blur. Don’t forget the carb heat and taxi over to the runway for the take off, on the way I am instructed to test each magneto to make sure they both work. This little plane had a radio, so we also had to learn its procedure, set it to the proper

I am not a professional and these are just some of the things I do to help alleviate my symptoms of SAD. If you are feeling these symptoms, speak with your doctor some people require medication or alternative means to help them conquer their winter time blues.

It just seemed like seconds and we were way the heck up in the air already, by damn I was flying… I was flying and had the controls in my hands and feet.

We buzzed around for a time and the instructor helped me get lined up to land and to get on the ground again.

The instructor had to show me how to slow the power to let us lose height and come down in a nice easy slope, that let us approach the end of the runway.

First try talking your way through it. I have always found venting about feeling these extreme winter blues helped me a lot.

Second, try adding some artificial sunshine to your day. You can buy light therapy lights and I have been told they do seem to help. I think I will try one this year as well.

Third, complex carbohydrates can help increase your serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter that controls our moods. A good bowl of oatmeal - a food I always eat during the winter months, and munching on some nice green vegetables are always good ideas. Try to stay away from the junk complex carbohydrates like cookies and such. They just have empty calories.

Fall is the time when the prairies blaze brightly with colour, the last hurrah just before a blanket of whiteness covers the ground. After several decades of working with colour and pattern I have come to respect its power and its nuances. Colour speaks without saying a word. Colour has personality, emotion and life. Great artists like Van Gogh, Matisse and Degas have used colour to convey moments, forever locked in time. One year I was fortunate to see some of the great works by masters of the impressionist era, when the paintings were briefly showcased in Edmonton. Among armed guards, I studied the painting as closely as I was allowed.

The vibrant colours, were often intensified by an under painting of its complementary colour set up to subliminally peek through, thus creating an sensory vibration in which the colours appeared to be unusually riveting. As I studied the paintings, I realized that their technique, using complementary or near complementary under paintings set

them apart as masters of their art, in using colour to evoke emotion and feeling.

Colour can be used in a similar way in interior decorating and design, and colour is very powerful in eliciting a response from us. Take the colour blue for example. A vibrant blue sky is the complement to all the gold and oranges in the fall foliage. The cool blue sky makes the warm fall colours more intense. Blue is a calming colour that represents wisdom, heaven, sky, water and truth.

Blue also pushes back walls, creating a feeling of greater space.

Think of the aqua marine blue of the Caribbean on a hot summer’s day and then think of the grey blue sky in a Canadian January.

Both colours are blue, yet if painted on the walls in a room, each room will make you feel entirely different. One room will be filled with happy energy, and the other will be quieter and more peaceful. That is the first layer, the colour layer.

The second colour layer to think about is the light layer. Light has a thin veil of colour, even if you can’t see it, but even so, it is still powerful in creating emotion in a room.

The next colour layer is pattern. Up close you will see the distinct colours in a pattern.

At a normal viewing distance in a room your eye will often mix the colours in a pattern.

I once had a client that had a teal sofa; we selected a gorgeous vintage coloured drapery fabric in a pattern of navy, green, ivory and brown. When the drapes were made and hung, the colours blended to create the same shade of teal in the drapery fabric, which really wasn’t there, but existed as our eyes optically mixed the colours. The whole look was stunning and perfect, yet most people would never have selected the colour scheme based on their up close viewing distance of the pattern.

The forth colour layer is relativity. Colour will express itself relative to other colours that are added into the room. If the room has the aqua marine wall colour, then adding furni-

The colour white usually allows the colour to be true to its deepest self, while black will make a colour be true to its lightest version. Every colour impacts every colour that is around it.

The final colour layer in this discussion is intensity. If complementary colours are added in the room then you will see an increased intensity and vibrancy. These are rooms that have the wow factor. If on the other hand, the colours added are tints or shades of the base colour or neutrals, the energy and vibrancy is decreased, creating a softer more peaceful feeling. In the hands of a skilled master or intuitive amateur colour will always speak and you will see and then feel the words. Your room is your canvas and your colour choices are your paint brushes.

Successful St. Jerome’s Annual Fall Supper

The Annual St. Jerome’s Fall Supper was another delicious success.

Once again we were able to serve approximately 700 people between the two settings and take-out meals. Thank you to Rolanda Beaudette and Paulette Moir for organizing this amazing event, for all the students who create posters, made table centers, peeled and cut potatoes, set up the hall and helped out during the supper. Thank you to all the parents and staff who donate food for the supper and helped out that evening. A very special thank-you to Charlene Young for being the kitchen boss on the day of the supper. Also thank you to all of the moms who were at the hall for much of Thursday preparing for the supper.

A very big thank you to all the staff and students at St. Jerome’s for making our “Terry Fox Run” on Monday, September 19 a big success. Students raised $696 for the Terry Fox Foundation. The run was also our first house competition of the year and by a very narrow margin Mackenzie came in first, Fraser second and Cartier third.

High School Council held their first “Classroom Challenge” on Friday, September 16. The winners, with a spectacular 91% participation rate, were the Grade 10 class. Their prize is a pizza lunch.

The cross-country running team participated in their first race of the season at Peace Hills Park on Saturday, September 17, in Wetaskiwin. Congratulations to Seth Mansfield, Jayce Sweeney, Sean Ulrich, and Mary Ulrich who all finished a challenging course with tough competition. A special mention to Anna Ulrich, who placed 3rd for the Senior Women.

Mr. Whelan took the Jr. High Golf team to Provost on Thursday, September 15, to compete in the 14 Annual ECACS Jr. High Golf Tournament. Congratulations to Kaiden Chase who placed third overall. Team members are Jayben Gamracy,

Kaiden Chase, Alexander McCullough, Austin Starko, Matthew Beaudette and Landon Reiniger.

Mr. Chase and Ms. Noel took the Sr. Golf team to St. Paul on Monday, September 19, to participate in zones. Congratulations to the Sr. Girls, Tenille Chase, Reese Bildfell, Brooklyn Nelson and Trista Minish, who won Silver in the competition. The members of the Sr. Boys team are, Hayden Protsch, Cody Jackson, Blake Nowosad and Ty Martin.

Reading Buddies has started! The grade fours are very excited to be Reading Buddies with the Grade 1/2 class. The grade three class reads with grade one and grade five with grade two. They love helping to teach their young friends to read and to have the chance to share their favorite stories with their Buddies.

September 16 - 17 was another busy weekend for all of our Volleyball teams. The Sr. Girls place fourth at their home tournament, with the Grade 10 and 11 teams making it to the playoff round. The Sr. Boys were in Cold Lake for the weekend. They had great games in the round robin, losing out in the semi-finals. The Jr. Boys and Girls team were in Lloydminster for the weekend.

Congratulations to the Jr. Boys for their Silver medal. The Jr. Girls lost out in the first round of playoffs.

The Grade 10 class, along with Mrs. Protsch and Mr. MacMillan headed out early Tuesday morning for their two-day retreat at Camp Encounter by Barrhead.

The students participated in a variety of team-building activities, personal reflection, games, campfire and time to bond with classmates. The beautiful fall weather contributed to the two wonderful days of memory-making moments.

On Wednesday, September 28, we will be celebrating St. Jerome’s Day. Students are encouraged to dress in school colours, red, white and black. The “Welcoming Event” will take place at 1:30 pm in the gym.

(1) An Owner who desires an inquiry shall serve the approving authority with a notice of objection: (a) in the case of an owner served in accordance with section 8(2), within 21 days of service on him of the notice of intention, and (b) in any other case, within 21 days after the first publication of the notice of intention.

The notice of objection shall state: the name and address of the person objecting, the nature of the objection, the grounds on which the objection is based, and the nature of the interest of the person objecting.

A person affected by the proposed expropriation does not need to serve an objection to the expropriation in order to preserve his or her right to have the amount of compensation payable determined by the Board or the Court, as the case may be.

The VES Cross Country Running Club is being offered to interested students in Grades 4-6. This is a very short season, as it only runs for the month of September. Within that time frame, there are at least two races that athletes may choose to enter – Riverdale and Vermilion. Practices are run by Miss Taylor and are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:40-4:30.

After-school volley ball has already begun this year. All Grade4-6 students are welcome. The club will run on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30 - 4:30 on September 12, 14, 19, 21, 26, 28 and October 3, 12, 17, 24, 26. If you have any questions, please contact Miss Kjenner.

Our first School Council meeting was held on September 19. VIBE did a presentation about the programming that they provide within VES including VIBE advi-

sory, classroom programs, Just Say Hi and Mother Daughter day. Trustee Huedepohl shared news from the board including that there will be School Council training nights, webinars and a conference available this year for parents who are interested in attending. Mrs. Webb and Mrs. Doherty shared what an amazing start-up VES has had. The next School Council meeting will be on October 17 at 7:00 in the VES library.

Grade 1 went on their fall walk on September 21, the first day of fall. Grade 1 students had so much fun learning about fall changes in science. They were artists and drew fabulous pictures of their fall tree.

They hope to visit the tree throughout the seasons to see the many changes in nature.

On September 29, VES will be taking part in the Terry Fox National School Run Day. This event takes in millions of students and educators and thousands of schools across the country, all with one purpose in mind: to beat cancer. For the next couple

of weeks, we will be talking with students about Terry Fox, his accomplishments, his message, and his dream. Additionally, each grade will be taking some time to run or walk laps around our track as we get closer to the Run Day. Our goal is to see if we, as a school, can even get close to matching Terry’s 5373 km accomplishment. We will be asking all students to bring a toonie on the week of the walk. On the first day of fall Mannville School’s senior high golf team the Kindergarten - Grade travelled up to St. Paul on September 19, to 6 classes gathered outdoors to celebrate compete in the North East Zone Golf Tourfall. There were relays organized by the nament. The boys team consisted of Max Grade 6 class including an acorn and Amero, Zach Polishuk, Quinn Harder and spoon relay and a balancing a pumpkin on Lucas Amero. On Tuesday September 20, the junior high golf team attended BTJHAA Golf Finals in Wainwright. It was a shot gun start; where the athletes completed 18 holes.

They began the day at 9:30 a.m. and were wrapped up by 4 p.m. Thanks to our athletes, Bailey Konieczny, Morgan Watling, Tyler Lassi, Wyatt Harder, and Rhys Amero for their skill and great sportsmanship! Thanks to Mrs. Erin Eschak for coaching.

First Aid for Grade 10 students will be taught by Don Doherty on September 30 - October 1. We appreciate this opportunity and are excited that our students will learn life-saving skills!

They are adjusting to using locks, transitioning between classes and an increased workload. With the first month just about over, they are doing great! The grade eight language arts class kicked off the year learning to organize grammar notebooks and reviewing grammar skills and the Grade nines are honing their reading comprehension skills and learning about grammar rules.

The 2015-16 yearbooks are in! Mrs. O. has enjoyed working students and staff over the past 15 plus years on developing yearbooks full of school memories. A decision has been made to go in a different direction regarding yearbooks this school year.

They are going all out for this event which will feature a live 1940’s style swing band, dinner, special presentations, dignitaries and special guests, dancing, themed cocktails and decor, a major door prize, and a swingin’ good time! There will also be a tribute to the Past Presidents of the Chamber. Guests are encouraged to dress in 1940’s retro style clothing.

If you don’t know how to dance the Lindy Hop or Jitterbug, Sarah Makins of Fame Dance Studio will be giving the audience a short tutorial on some basic steps before the dance begins.

Sixth Annual Suicide Walk Of Remembrance Shirley Scott Submitted

The Suicide Walk of Remembrance was held at the Bud Miller Park in Lloydminster on September 10.

T h e wa l k r e c o g n ize d t h e Wo r l d Suicide Prevention Day and was open to the public. The theme this year was, “Connect, Communicate and Care”.

A family who had lost a daughter to suicide began the walk eight years ago to honour and remember her life.

The Walk committee plans to continue this walk into the future.

The opening prayer was offered by Maxine Desjarlais.

and read letters of greetings from MLA Dr. Richard Starke and MLA Colleen Young. Deputy Mayor, Jason Whiting from the City of Lloydminster brought greetings and Constable Grant Kirzinger, of the RCMP shared some remarks.

Af ter receiving carnations and ribbons 120 adults and children walked the lake route. The families reflected, remembered and honoured their loved ones.

O n r e t u r n i n g Ke n ny M a c e nte rtained with very meaningful songs and Bernadette Yelland from Prairie North Regional Health Authority, Neil Harris and Loralee Marin from Alberta Health Services shared about services and

programs offered in our area for those who experience depression, mental health issues and trauma in their lives.

It provided an opportunity for communit y members who were struggling with mental health issues to communicate and connect with committee and government members about their needs and care to follow through with concerns. An open mic was available for the public to say a few words to remember and honour their loved one.

Refreshments were available and t he event provi d e d fir st-timer s an oppor tunity to connect and veteran walkers a chance to re-connect with those met on previous walks.

The new Express Pizza Plus held its official opening in Vermilion on Friday, September 23. Owner Salman Arabi said he was delighted with the support he has received from The Town of Vermilion since opening here two months ago.

“Vermilion is a great town. When we applied for a permit here, everybody was excited our new business and everybody was welcoming,” said Arabi. “It’s amazing; it’s been great so far. We are looking forward to consistent service and great food. We are thinking positive and that we are going to well here.”

St. Jerome’s Annual Fall Supper Success

“We are very happy and grateful with this year’s Fall Supper turn out,” said St. Jerome’s Principal Allan Chase. “We were sold out, even over sold. We fed about 720 people in total this year.”

“The students were great and the parent support was great helping to prepare the food during the day. Parent Council had a 50/50 draw during the two seating’s and our own Father Roger won the first 50/50. He donated his winnings back to the school which was very nice,” added Principal Chase.

Funds raised go towards the extracurricular school activities including sports teams, different cultural events and leadership groups throughout the school year.

With over 500 attendees scheduled to attend they are still looking to add more, as they hope to reach their original goal of $1.5 million.

Each year, the Prairie North Health Authority submits a list of priority projects to the LRHF and both last year and this year, the Renal Dialysis Department was selected to be the beneficiary of the gala.

CN Invests In Blackfoot Community Greening Project

Delegates from CN and Trees Canada along with members from the County of Vermilion River attended a celebration event for the CN EcoConnexions ‘From the Ground Up’ project at the Blackfoot Park on September 22.

“The grant is available for communities along our rail line for the beautification of their community,” said CN Senior Manager of Government and Stakeholder Relations Brent Kossey. “This is our way to give back to the community and to do something that is environmen-

tally sound and sustainable. The objective of the CN EcoConnexions project is to promote community sustainability through the greening of communities across Canada,” said Kossey.

Community Advisor for Trees Canada John Helder said that it was obvious to see that the project had made a big dent in greening in the Blackfoot community.

“Already you can see what a difference the newly planted trees make. They always say that the best time to plant a tree is fifty or one hundred years ago, but the next best time is NOW,” said Helder.

The County of Vermilion River was

one of just 31 recipients from across Canada to be selected for this esteemed program, receiving a $25,000 grant this summer. The funding was used to plant 400 trees, shrubs and groundcovers in the hamlets of Islay, Clandonald and Blackfoot. In each community, local partnering groups and community-minded individuals assisted with the project planning and tree planting, with nearly 100 volunteers turning out on Planting Day to get all the trees successfully planted.

groups establish tree planting and green space enhancement initiatives in a sustainable, environmentally responsible manner.

The Root will host the Harvest Moon Lantern Walk and Street Dance featuring local artists and performers on October 1. The Fred Eaglesmith show will perform at The Root on October 5, along with special guest Tif Ginn. Eaglesmith is a Canadian alternative country singersongwriter, one of nine children raised by a farming family in rural Southern Ontario.

He is known for writing songs about machines or vehicles, including songs about trains, tractors, trucks, cars, and engines. Rural life, dogs, guns, drinking, farming and ranching are other common themes of the Fred Eaglesmith show.

Many of his songs are about failing farms and small businesses. Down-andout characters dealing with loss of love or livelihood and quirky rural folk also popu-

First Ever Community Sports And Wellness Symposium

T h e Ve r m i l i o n M i n o r H o c k e y Association presented the first ever C ommunit y S p or t and Wellnes s Symposium at the Vermilion Arena on September 24. The purpose of the event was to benefit of children in the community.

Keynote speaker John O’ Sullivan travelled all the way from Oregon, U.S.A. to deliver a presentation on how coaches and parents can approach sports differently in order to make children more successful, and give them happier sporting experiences at any age; in any sport.

“As an athlete, you can do everyt hing r ig ht; an d o ne bad injur y or experience can ruin everything,” said

O’Sullivan.

He used several videos and personal experiences to show examples of how negative mindsets can interfere with performance and that being demanding and demeaning are two very different things.

“It is okay to coach children differe n t l y. Tr e a t t h e m t h e s a m e , b u t e n c o ur ag e t h e m to t h e ir p ote nt i a l g o a l s; b e i n g s u r e yo u k n o w w h at t h e ir g o a l s are. Mountain Man Contenders Reflect On Gruelling Challenge

On September 8 just under 350 Edmonton, Wainwright and Shilo based soldiers challenged themselves in a grueling and unforgiving exercise called Mountain Man. The gruesome endurance check challenge is held annually by the First Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group in the Edmonton River Valley.

Designed to test the limits of a soldier’s mental and physical toughness, the race starts with a 32 km footrace, followed by a 3.2 km canoe portage, then a 10 km paddle along the North Saskatchewan River and finishes with another 5.6 km race, while carrying an army issue rucksack with a 15 kg load the entire time.

“The portage was the most difficult and painful part of the race,” said Wainwright based Sergeant Junior Bahadur, who finished in 115th place.

“The weight makes your muscles go numb and stiff, it is hard to endure. Sometimes you to have to stop for a quick 20 second break to get the blood flow regu-

lated and keep going. It’s definitely mind over matter, you just get in the zone and don’t stop!” said the 37 year old Sergeant.

“Personally, I do it for the challenge it offers and as I get older, I have kids and think it’s a positive influence for them to watch. I found that my ankles were really sore afterwards because we run it in sneakers. Your muscles cramp up afterwards but every year with more conditioning and training, the better you get. It is both psychically and mentally challenging; and as a soldier those are two things we enjoy.”

While it took some 10 hours to finish, the fastest person finished in 5 hours.

Wainwright based medic Alain Goguen, who joined the military a year and a half ago, said that as soon as he heard about the Mountain Man Challenge, he knew it was something he wanted to do.

“I couldn’t train the way I wanted to because of a nagging tendon injury to my right leg, which prevented me from running for most of the summer, but I maintained fitness in other ways to make sure I could still do the race. My goal was

The Vermilion Jr. B Tigers took on the Fort St. John Huskies at the Vermilion Stadium on September 18, for their second exhibition game.

Last year the Tigers made the trip to Fort St. John for two games and this year, they returned the favour by coming to Vermilion.

The Vermilion Jr. B Tigers have 27 players trying to make the final roster, and will be cut down once a number of their players complete camp. The exhibition games give the coach a chance to see the prospective players in actual game settings before they are registered to play in regular league games.

The Tigers took 26 minutes in penalties while the Huskies took 16 penalty minutes.

“We were trying several different line combinations as well as different defensive pairings in an attempt to evaluate the players still at camp,” said Coach Ryan Earl.

Jolan Wong Shines At The Paralympics

Canada’s first ever Women’s Sitting Volleyball Team to enter the Paralympics in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil from September 7 - 18, included Vermilion’s own Jolan (nee Brunner) Wong.

Being new to the Paralympics, Wong and her team entered the competition as underdogs; but left having earned great respect.

“Going to the Paralympics is big. Playing the host nation in your first game ever at the Paralympics is even bigger. We had done as much preparation as we could to simulate the circumstances that we would encounter in Rio, but you can’t simulate the thousands of fans. As far as playing with the top teams in the world, we held our ground.

We are finally confident that we can run with them. We did just that, but need to work on doing it at a consistent level if we want to come out on top,” said Wong.

Wong went on to say that her favorite moments included witnessing the phenom-

enal athletes and human beings that had persevered so much to qualify for the Paralympics. Off the court, part of her Paralympic experience included gathering with trains of visually impaired people in the dining hall, trains of wheelchairs all holding on to one motorized chair, those using crutches, canes, or prosthetics; every type of physical impairment one could imagine. “ It’s so fascinating seeing the adaptability of everyone and how everyone does something a little differently; but at the end of the day, we all get it done. It makes you truly believe there is no such thing as can’t,” said Wong.

During their Paralympic debut, The Canadian Women’s Sitting Volleyball Team did not go unnoticed. After falling short to Brazil, the Netherlands, and the Ukraine, they were able to triumph over Rwanda earning them 7th place. Captain and Setter, Wong was recognized as the third best setter at the tournament.

Team Canada had risen to their highest challenge yet, and the crowd clearly appreciated their efforts. They managed to earn the respect of the host nation and its fans.

“Hearing the fans and playing under the bright lights was pretty phenomenal! The Brazilian fans chanting ‘CA-NA-DA’ as we exited the stadium following our loss to Brazil, is a feeling I can’t re-enact. Brazil was behind us one hundred percent which was pretty cool,” said Wong.

Wong went on to say that in the past, as a busy wife and mother, she has considered pursuing other things instead of sport.

However, with her most recent Paralympic experiences, she has renewed her desire to stay involved in sitting volleyball.

“Finally reaching the goal of getting to the Paralympics has only added fuel to my fire, and made me want to attend many more Paralympic games. This experience has made me want to reach out even more to

my community and spread awareness of para-sport,” said Wong.

Wong went on to thank those who helped to make her dreams become a reality.

Terry Fox Run At St. Jerome’s School

Approximately 350 students gathered on September 19, at St. Jerome’s School to take part in the Terry Fox Run. Each class took time before the event to recognize who Terry Fox was, making the students eager to participate.

Students and their families also made donations totalling $696 to support the Terry Fox Foundation.

Grades Kindergarten - Grade 3, Grades 4 - 6, and Grades 7 - 12 set off on different lengths of races. Many of them were decorated with ‘Courage’ tattoos for the special occasion.

of fun too,” said a group of Grade 3 and 4 students after they completed the run.

Some students took the competition seriously as they were given an added incentive to earn points for their school houses; Fraser, McKenzie, and Cartier.

Angela Mouly Customers attended a meet and greet at the Alberta Treasury Branch (ATB) to welcome the new ATB manager, Sean Tennant on September 23.

Staff volunteered to bake and set up for the event. With homemade goodies, juice, and coffee; customers enjoyed visiting and even joked back and forth.

After approximately six weeks at his new

position, Tennant said he had noticed the customer’s loyalty at ATB. Customers said they appreciated Tennant’s willingness to serve their needs.

“Thank you to the community for making me feel very welcome and thank you to everyone who stopped by during the ‘Meet and Greet’. We enjoyed all of the conversations and learning more about ATB’s customers in Vermilion,” said Tennant.

Submitted The most signed e -petition ever presented in the House of Commons, since the practice began in 2013, calls on the federal government to champion the oil and gas industry.

Ms. Shannon Stubbs, Member of Parliament for Lakeland (Alberta), officially presented an e-petition in the House of Commons calling upon the federal government to vocally support the oil and gas industry, new pipelines across Canada, and hundreds of thousands of employed and unemployed oil workers. The petition was signed by 34,537 Canadians from across

the country and represents one of the highest signed House of Commons e-petitions in history.

Mr. Mark Scholz, President of the Canadian Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors (CAODC) and spokesperson for Oil Respect, a campaign demanding respect for Canadian oil and gas workers, families and businesses stated, “The majority of Canadians are not activists or paid protesters. The fact that this is one of the highest signed e-petitions reaffirms that the majority of Canadians support the oil and gas sector, and support pipelines provided they are built and managed responsibly.”

Marie Conboy For the second year The Vermilion Bargain Shop will be doing a food drive for the Vermilion Food Bank running, from September 25 to October 7.

“Last year over $4,000 worth of food was raised for the Food Bank and we are

aiming to match that this year,” said Bargain Store Manager Lonita Lavergne. “With the economy the way it is and seeing families struggling, we feel that the food bank is a worthy cause. We will have a bin at the store where people can put a food item in or they can donate a food item when they are at the till.

Mr. Bernard Hancock, an oil and gas worker struggling to find employment in the downturn stated, “Canada is a world leader in the responsible development of its oil and gas resources and I see this firsthand in the field. I want my government to champion the men and women who work hard to make our industry the best in the world.”

Mr. David Lefebvre, Director General of the Quebec Oil and Gas Association, an Association created to encourage dialogue in Quebec about the potential of the province’s emerging oil and gas industry and to make Quebec a lead-

ing oil and gas producer stated, “It is important to understand how crucial it is for our industry to bring its products efficiently to markets, and how much economic activity depends on it. This is true for producers, would be producers, and the entire value chain of our industry.”

Pipelines are the safest method of transportation for petroleum products.

A lack of pipelines to new markets means Canada receives far less than world prices and is required to import oil from countries with lower environmental, labour and human rights standards.

Open Stage Talent A Riot

Applause filled the Vermilion Legion as approximately 50 people gathered for the Folk Club’s first Open Stage event of the season on September 24. A showcase of excellent local amateur talent played a variety of musical genres; keeping the audience clapping along to familiar tunes and requesting encores. Names that graced the stage included Ray McMillan, Phil Willis, Ray Blackmore, Dennis Gerik, Tom Baribeau, Kevin Clarke, and Wayne

Gochee. “ We’d l i ke t o t h a n k everyone for coming out to support our local artists, and look forward to seeing the community more throughout the year,” said Vermilion Folk Club President, Rita Barr.

The next Folk Club performance will feature professional artist, Phyllis Sinclair on October 15, at the Vermilion Legion.
