Over 100 people gathered at the new Pomeroy Inn And Suites in Vermilion to celebrate their Grand Opening on September 14. The attendees appeared to be in awe of their ‘luxurious’ rooms.

Music played as Heather Klages was live on location with Lloyd 95.9. Visitors had the opportunity to tour the facilities and enter a chance to win a one night stay or a propane smoker. The Open House was followed by a Chamber Mixer which gave business representatives the opportunity to view the premises and mingle.

We realize that rural Alberta is often under marketed in tourism and we hope to provide lodging for the many upcoming local community events. Town Manager Dion Pollard was excited to see the finished product as he had worked with Pomeroy during some of the construction phase.

Many admired the decor as they followed the tour, and some stopped to enjoy sitting by the pool as they stamped their Pomeroy Passport. A family suite housing three beds and a sofa prompted visitors to consider booking ex tended family in the future.

Linda Nelson loved the facility and joked that if her family came to visit, she would let them stay at her place, while she booked herself a room at the hotel.

“We would like to thank the community for their support today and in the coming years,” said Pomeroy General Manager Tannis Frantik.

For the third year running, the TD Tree Days program planted roots in Vermilion.

Volunteers were up early on Saturday morning planting 100 trees in an effort to make the community a more beautiful place to live.

TD Canada Trust Branch Manager Marlene Beattie said that the trees will last for the next 20/30 years or longer and that in ten years the community will be able to see the long-lasting improvement to our community.

“It shows a sense of pride,” said Beattie.

“It’s really great because you get to make your own community that much greener.

The trees really impact the environment and shows how much we care about our town.”

The program is in partnership with the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation (TD FEF) which encourages Canadians to volunteer to help green their environment.

The TD FEF works with towns, municipalities, conservation authorities, and Aboriginal communities that support the effort to ensure that the correct trees are planted in the most suitable locations to encourage tree survival and reduce tree maintenance.

“It’s an ongoing project, and I think we will continue to do this every year; as I know the Town is very pleased with the program.

We are doing a mixture of pine and deciduous trees. All of the trees were purchased locally. The cost of the trees was funded by TD Bank and it was topped up by the Town,” said Councillor Rob Pulyk, who is also the Chair of the Enivonment Committee.

With the help of roughly 30 volunteers approximately 124 trees were planted; up from 99 last year. Lloyd’s Limb Service donated their services as well as the mulch and the Town of Vermilion lent a hand by drilling the holes for the trees.

“Every year that we have run the program so far has been very successful. It helps ‘tree’ areas in town that has bare spots look more vibrant and makes our community that much better, said Pulyk.

VES Opts For ‘Muffin Morning’ To Welcome Families

Smiles and hugs were exchanged as several hundred students gathered with their families at Vermilion Elementary School (VES) on September 15, for their ‘Muffin Morning’.

The event was held instead of the traditional hot dog evening to welcome families and give them the opportunity to meet teachers and bus drivers.

As families entered the school staff members offered muffins, juice, and coffee to those who attended.

“It is a good start to a busy year,” said Teacher Greg Haslehurst.

VES welcomed 48 new students this year. The ‘Muffin Morning’ also gave families an opportunity to rekindle old friendships or make some new ones.

Through visiting, visitors were able to build a sense of community.

Principal Michelle Webb went on to say that they would be seek ing feedback on whether the ‘Muf fin Morning’ met people’s needs.

“It was a fabulous muffin morning, being brought together and celebrating the children we are all privileged to work with. Our school is only as good as our family support. Teachers, parents, and the community working together allows for students to be the best that they can be,” said Principal Webb.

She went on to say that this year, VES is looking for ward to meeting ever y c hild where they are at and making sure each child is met with the support that they need to be successful.

St. Jerome’s Annual Fall Supper

The St. Jerome’s Fall Supper is always a ver y popular event on the school year calendar and this year’s annual Fall Supper will take place at the Vermilion Regional Centre on Thursday, September 22.

“We fed over 600 people last year due to the efforts of the school communit y and the communit y of Vermilion,” said St. Jerome’s Principal Allan Chase.

Fu n d s r a i s e d h e l p s u p p o r t t h e running of all the sports teams, different cultural events and leadership groups throughout the school year to support

student activities, extra-curricular activities, sports, leadership, and after school programs.

“We get money from the government for each student and then everything we do after school comes from school generated funds. “ Pret t y much ever y activit y is supported by these funds because we don’t get paid for the instructors. Operating a school is extremely expensive,” said Principal Chase.

“The students do most of the work preparing the food for the Fall Supper, and a lot of the food is donated by the parents and families themselves.

In our lives, we of ten take many things for granted, but one of the most impor tant aspects of our lives that we seem to take for granted the most is family.

For some reason, we of ten think our family will live forever and can’t be snatched away from us without warning. How many times have we said “It’s ok I will go visit them tomorrow” and the next thing you know time has slipped away in the blink of an eye. We are often not graced with the knowledge of when we will lose a loved one, so it is very important to take the time out of our busy schedules and just visit.

I am the biggest offender of taking

for granted that my family will always be there. I put of f phone calls and visits. It isn’t because I don’t love my family dearly because I do; it ’s because I don’t take the time to do these things thinking they will always be there tomorrow.

In 20 0 0 I m ove d fro m L a br ad or City, NL back to my home community in Newfoundland. My two sisters and one brother still lived in Labrador City, and while it was just a three and a half hour plane ride, I never went back to see them. I moved here to Vermilion in 2006 and since moving here, I have been back to the ‘Rock” as we call it just once. Neither my brother nor my sisters live on Island, so I didn’t get to see them on that trip.

Here it is now 2016, and I am getting my butt on a plane and flying the hateful six hours to see my sister in New Brunswick (where she lives now). Am

I excited? Absolutely! What is making me travel to see her? A very simple answer, “Sue.” LOL. One day while eating lunch we were chatting about the next place we would like to go visit, and I said, “Well, my next trip has to be back east so I can see my sister.” Sue asked me how long it had been since I saw her, and with a little embarrassment I looked at her and said, “hmmm must be 16 or 17 years now.” Her eyes enlarged like walnuts and questioned, “Really?” I answered meekly “Yip.” Of course, Sue being Sue said, “Well we are going to have to look at flights.”

Me being my usual self said, “Sure.” and that was the end of that. A couple of weeks later this little voice (Sue) said to me “We have to look at flights for you to go see your sister.” and voila 15 minutes later the tickets were booked.

Here I am today boarding a plane and

couldn’t care less. It was sort of like they were saying, “tough beans man”.

I expected more.

Luckily when I contacted the Ministe r fo r S e n i o r ’s o f f i c e, I r e c e i ve d another sympathetic response understanding that seniors would not remember the renewal.

I t h i n k t h e r e ’s m o r e t o i t t h a n saving a few tax dollars. There will be literally thousands of people who will forget; not only seniors. Perhaps they want people to be stopped and charged.

I guess I’ve become rather cynical towards the government as I think that it was not thought through all the way; and that, sadly may be typical of this government.

My experience was that Lougheed’s

If it weren’t for Sue acting on it and making me look at flights, I would still be here this week working away procrastinating thinking there is always tomorrow or next year or maybe another 16 or 17 years from now.

While I am on my trip, I am also hoping to travel the couple hours to see my sister in Nova Scotia as well.

That will kill two birds with one stone as the saying goes. My brother has been here to see me a few times so if I can get to see both sisters this time around I will be very happy.

Over the last couple months, I have lost a couple of people I cared for very much, and it has brought me back to reality. Stop taking time for granted!

Make the phone calls or plan the visits cause no one wants to live with regrets or what if’s.

Letter To The Editor Dear Editor, O n S e p te m b e r 9, I r e c e i ve d a n automated phone call informing me t h at I w o u l d n o l o n g e r b e r e c e i v ing letter notices for my licence and vehicle registration renewals. As a senior that does not use the internet, I was deeply concerned that my m e m o r y w o u l d n o t s e r ve m e we l l enough and I may end up ticketed in the future.

I took it upon myself to phone Dr. Starke’s office where I received a warm and sympathetic response. I also contacted Rachel Notley’s office but received a condescending and very authoritarian response.

It was such a contrast. I did not c a l l i n w i t h a h ar s h ad d r e s s, a n d re c eive d the im pres sio n that they

government had great concern for seniors while Klein’s ignored seniors because they weren’t high contributors as consumers. Our government is not prepared for the onslaught of baby boomer s that will soon need facilities to look after them.

For the time being, my wife and I a r e s t i l l f o r t u n at e e n o u g h t o b e living in our own home, but for many p e o p l e t h at w i l l n ot b e a n o pt i o n.

With the changes in the renewal process and life in general, I would advise ever yone to keep an eye on w h at t h e g over n m e nt i s d o i n g, a s they are supposedly there to work for you.

Passed away on Sept 1, 2016 at 96 years of age at the Mannville Care Centre.

Hey good folks, I am back from my favourite fall outdoor adventures.

It was outstanding even if I am still sick with this summer cold, which I have had so long now I think it is normal to feel this way. I didn’t let it slow me down, wore out some shoe leather and put on a lot of kilometres taking elk for their morning walks, or more like just to find those seemingly elusive critters this year. We had to do a lot of walking just to find them before even getting the chance of taking them for a morning walk, our wilderness areas this year is lush with foliage I have not seen the like in 20 years. Which made for some excited moments as one could not see them deep in the woods at times unless one was just mere feet away, for which then they would explode around through the willows around you like a freight train. It wasn’t for the weak hearted, and I am convinced there was a personal elk conspiracy to scare the living daylights out of poor little me, just yesterday a very cold, dreary and wet morning, also the darkest morning we had seen.

I made my way to my tree stand all alone, trying to focus my night eyes at 4:00 in the AM, it was super dark and as I tried to find my way, the hair on the back of my neck rose as I thought I was being followed. More by luck than skill I found my tree stand and settled in the tree tops waiting for the morning sunrise, I just started to relax when a bull elk and I swear right below my stand… let out an earth shaking bugle. Now most of you may not have heard a live elk bugle, and those of you have known it’s like a blood curdling scream even at a quarter mile away that gets your heart pumping.

We are finally g e t t i n g a fe w n i c e days to combine, so we are crossing our fingers that the weather will hold. A farm lady I know told me this story of her grandson that just star ted kindergar ten. The principal asked him how he was doing, and he retorted” pretty good, we just started the wheat today!” Now that’s a young farmer in the making.

Today I quickly whipped up this stew, using frozen moose hamburger and vegetables right from the garden. Some of the carrots are the biggest I have ever seen, and all the rain has made super large beets as well. The stew smells delicious simmering this morning. Well at close range I’m here to tell you can magnify that volume and sheer scare factor tenfold, I’m sure if my hunting boots were not tied snug I would have jumped right out of them.

It was a good hour before daylight and he didn’t leave crashing around and just as my knees started to stop knocking the bull would call or crash around successfully turning my legs into rubber. As daylight approached the bull disappeared like a ghost, leaving me shivering and not knowing if it was because it was actually cold or that the dang elk did his part in the conspiracy.

I would have really liked to invite him for supper but the elk were successful in avoiding my full deep freeze plans during this trip, however to be fair I only got to bow hunt the elk five days out of the first 10 days of this September. But in no way can I say the trip was unsuccessful, it always would be successful just living the outdoor adventures that I so love to live, also as a bonus I was successful in harvesting a giant of a mule deer.

The big buck an old warrior, had a crown of perfect velvet antler with more points than one could imagine, including drop tines and non-typical points everywhere. This buck is what every hunter dreams of and is a buck of a lifetime, I was very fortunate and extremely thankful to harvest such a majestic specimen, table-fare and memories that can’t be beat.

Of course the adventures never quit and with the good some will be not so good, that morning I was on top of the world and after pictures, I walked back to camp for my truck for retrieval.

We successfully and carefully retrieved the deer and didn’t have to drive in any rough terrain to do so, I slowly made my way across a smooth meadow and with

and freshly sliced cucumbers. I just buy the bags of shredded cabbage and stir in some mayonnaise for a super quick after work coleslaw salad. Desert is homemade Saskatoon and apple pies that I picked up at the farmers market.

There is more onion in this recipe than usual, and if really makes the stew full of flavor. The good news about cooked onions is that they retain the beneficial nutrient, quercetin, undamaged by the heat. Quercetin is a flavonoid that may inhibit the growth of certain cancers.

Quercetin has been shown to lower bad cholesterol and raise good cholesterol. Onions are a natural source of querctin and chromium, which assists in blood sugar control. Both onions and garlic contain sulfur compounds that work to detox our bodies by binding to heavy metals such as lead, mercury and cadmium and then escorting them out of the body. Properties of nutrients in the

onion also include being protective of the cardio-vascular system.

Studies have shown that regular consumptions of carrots reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, glaucoma, Alzheimer’s and colon cancer. Carrots also appear to decrease the risk of lung cancer among smokers. Carrots contain antioxidants and are an excellent source of vitamin A, vitamin K and a host of other vitamins, minerals and nutrients.

Potatoes are a natural source of lipoic acid, vitamin C and vitamin B6 which are necessary fuel (co-factors) for a multitude of enzymatic reactions that are needed in the body. Recent research by scientists in the UK has found a substance called kukoamines in potatoes. Kukoamines and lipoic acid are natural blood pressure lowering compounds. Potatoes also contain vitamin B3, B5, potassium and manganese. If you use store bought

Hamburger Stew water 2 pounds of hamburger, beef or moose 3 cups of chopped onion, divided 3 cups of chopped carrots 4 cups chopped potatoes 2-3 cloves of garlic finely chopped Sea salt and pepper to taste Cook the hamburger in 2-3 cups of water. Once the meat is cooked add two cups of onions, garlic, carrots and potatoes. Add enough water to cover all the vegetables. Cook until almost done then add the remaining onions and cook until the onions are softened. Season with sea salt and pepper to taste.

an ugly metal sound the truck came to an abrupt dead stop. The truck leaning heavily to the driver’s side was a sure sign something was terribly wrong, as we got out of the truck the sight of the driver’s side tire pointing in an impossible direction near on its side dictated a long day.

It’s a good thing one has great friends, Derrill who was at the cabin came to the rescue and retrieved us and the big deer, and after caring for the deer at camp, retrieving for my buddy “Cammy the truck” was a priority.

It turns out a lower ball joint let loose, actually pulling out the front drive shaft and shearing it off, among other damage, I still wake up in a cold sweat thinking what if that let loose at the speed of limit on a highway instead of five KPH in a soft meadow. This wasn’t a part that was neglected in fact it was replaced only two years ago, so have the front ends of your vehicles inspected often, granted I ride mine hard and put it away wet, but it’s not something we often think of.

I would also like to give a shout out to J’s towing from Wainwright for going on and above, and his professionalism on caring for my “baby” [truck], $1200.00 and week later The Miss Oohohh Chronicles Well, my puppy and I haven’t been apar t since the stork brought her at seven weeks, so after missing her so much after those first five days, I couldn’t wait to get back to play.

In most all our different pursuits in life, it can be so very evident that many important outcomes of our fortunes depend on, you guessed it “Minor little details.” Let’s start this with things I know that have so much depending on those little details.

In fishing the person who watches what works and pays attention to those little details in the one who gets to have fresh fish dinners. Those who don’t observe, don’t get to eat fish too often as i have found anyway. Sometimes the fish wins though.

Just like the way colour of a hook is affected by different water colours, a n d c a n m a ke i t i nv i s i b l e o r ve r y attractive.

Just a little thing, or how the weight of line can affect the action of the lure.

You need to pay at tention. Anyone who had studied how to hit things and

shoot better is really conscious of how minor little details can make the difference between a hit and disappointment.

You better pay attention when you’re sighting in your rifle and especially if you hand load your ammunition, you know every little minor detail can bring success or even a tragedy!!

Every change in bullet weight or the powder used in reloading can change the way a rifle shoots, so you better know those “Little Minor Details.”

O h, any hand loader k nows you better keep the brass separate from each rifle or full length resize them or guess what? yes, the gun will likely jam and allow your prize to escape.

Talk to an old hunter who found out the hard way. Those of us who play music can tell when all the minor details are very carefully observed too that make the dif ference bet ween music and noise, well us old guys do. Seems like the new age music, the making of noise is more likely the outcome.

Matter of opinion of course!! But to

stand at a mic and sing your best and have your back musicians follow you so exactly and really put nice accent to you is “Ace.” But on the other hand of those little details like missed or wrong chords happen it can throw you off and make the whole effort just an ordeal, yeah well, if you’ve been there you know that. What a thrill when all those ‘minor’ details are recognized.

Another part of the main thing of doing the best with those details is cooking.

Well, I’m not the world’s greatest cook at all, but I have to eat what I do cook so I tr y to see what goes and what doesn’t. Yes those little details can surely foul you up or make your meal a s u c c e s s o r s o m et h i n g a c oyote would turn down!! Just the right spice, heat, and on and on and if you don’t pay attention you can have an appetizing meal or a burnt offering.

I’ve had about equal results from my trials I guess!! Yes, in life there are so many things that require our due diligence in so many many things. On building things and doing all manner

of things that require measurements and being ver y conscious of those minor details can be the difference between success and failures and the waste of time and material. Have you heard someone say “ How can that little detail make ANY difference?” as I’ve been trying to say yes it can!!

Talk to an old farmer who had defied all odds, weather and politics and ask him how ALL the minor litle details of timing, kind of seed, application of chemicals and fertilizer pay such an important part of his success.

Yeah you say, you can’t beat the weather if it goes against you and you get frost or hail or dried out. but the guys that prospered seemed to find a way to succeed by managing the ‘Minor’ little details. Yes they have made a difference. I used to trap and harvest beaver, muskrats and coyotes and you know what, the dif ference between a beautiful useful pelt and an almost useless waste of an animal were yes, ‘Those minor details’ In how you handled that skin!!

Legion Donates To Cadets

The Royal Canadian Legion made a donation of $4,500 to the Vermilion Army Cadets at the Vermilion Armories on September 13.

“This comes out of our Poppy Fund and it helps to keep the Vermilion Army Cadets running, by helping to cover the cost of sports days and field trips. It ’s for the kids,” said Legion Poppy Chair, Marcel Lefebvre.

“We are very proud to sponsor the Vermilion Army Cadets and we are

ver y proud of what they do,” said Vermilion Legion President, Garry Zayac. “I am very im pres sed with some of the exercises I’ve seen. They are taught discipline, leadership and good self esteem.”

‘Growing Women’s Health’ Initiative At Shoppers Drug Mart Will Benefit Vermilion

Vermilion Shoppers Drug Mar t is fundraising for their ‘Growing Women’s H e a l t h’ i n i t i at i ve fr o m S e pte m b e r 10 - October 7, with proceeds going towards the upgrading of the Vermilion Valley Lodge Courtyard.

Shoppers locations across the countr y will be fundraising for the ‘Growing Women’s Health’ initiative for their one annual opportunity to donate locally, while other national campaigns will be held throughout the year. Since 2002, Shoppers locations throughout Canada have raised $29 million with

100% of all proceeds benefiting local women’s health initiatives.

Since March 1, 2016, Shoppers Drug Mart has been operating in Vermilion. “ I t ’s b e e n a n a m a z i n g e x p e r i ence interacting with the community.

Customers have been ver y understanding with any delays or issues that arose and I would like to thank them for that, along with the Town of Vermilion for having support groups that were easy to contact and work with,” said Associate Owner Scott Gillingham.

During his time in Vermilion, Gillingham noticed that Shoppers had maintained their special relationship with many of the Seniors in the community.

With the residents and their families being customers, Gillingham wanted to give the Seniors of the Vermilion Valley Lodge an area they can utilize to get outdoors, socialize and take in the scenery; giving them a little bit more than the indoor facility has to offer.

Last year, the Vermilion Valley Lodge upgraded the cour tyard with picnic tables. With the help from this initiative, they plan to build raised flower beds, seating areas, and a gazebo.

Until October 7, you can purchase $1 leaves, $5 butterflies, $10 apples, or $50 birds at Shoppers Drug Mart that will be displayed in the window in recognition of the community’s support for “Growing Women’s Health’ and the Vermilion Valley Lodge’s cour tyard upgrade.

“We would like to thank the community for their support of the ‘Growing Women’s Health’ initiative, and their c o nt inue d su p p or t t hroug h out t he year,” said Gillingham.

Upcoming Lloydminster Harvest Festival

The 2nd Annual Har vest Festival will feature something for ever yone at the Bud Miller All Seasons Park on September 24, hosted by the City of Lloydminster and Bioclean Aquatic Centre.

Many free events will entertain families including bouncy houses, face painting, a balloon twister crafts, a magic show, Chicken John’s petting zoo, a hay maze, wagon rides, and three different show times from the band, ‘The Prairie Dogs’. Delish Eats And Treats will be providing free children’s classes teaching up to 200 children how to make fresh pasta.

The Lloydminster Co-op Food Store will be providing a barbecue meal at the event complete with a corn roast and baked goods. Donations from the meal will suppor t Big Brothers Big

Sisters of Lloydminster. Tim Horton’s will be providing free hot chocolate and coffee.

Moonlight Photography will provide the opportunity to purchase fall family portraits and there will be a farmer’s market and other food vendors on site as well.

“This year we are taking it up a notch to provide fun for the community before winter settles in. We are excited to see families out enjoying the beautiful fall colours and celebrating local businesses and fall products. First United Church Cantata 2016

Submitted “Each year for the past 10 years, a group of singers congregate to perform a Christmas Cantata. It is an opportunity for people who love singing to gather and produce beautiful music, and there is a lot of beautiful Christmas music” says director, Bernie Huedepohl.

Huedepohl says his aim is to give people an outlet where they can sing in harmony. This is a non-audition choir, so all that is required is a desire to sing well.

For people taking part in their first choir experience, it is an opportunity to sing

with more experienced choir members in an atmosphere where everyone is welcomed. The choir attempts to make the experience enjoyable and artistically satisfying.

The choir will take part in five performances, at Vermilion Valley Lodge, Blue Christmas, two performances at First United Church, and finally at the hospital.

Practices will begin Sunday, Sept.

25 and will continue each Sunday and Monday except for Thanksgiving Sunday. Sunday practices are at 12:30, and Monday’s are at 7 p.m.

Michelle Feist Leaves Position At Chamber

Michelle Feist, the former Of fice Manager at the Vermilion and District C h a m b e r o f C o m m e r c e, r e c e n t l y moved on to start a new position as the Executive Assistant at the Lloydminster Construction Association.

Fei st s ai d that she felt that she had “reached the end of the line with the position she held at the Chamber and she couldn’t advance anymore.

“It was a great stepping stone in my career. It gave me great experience that I will be able to use in the future,” said Feist.

The new job will involve the planning of company events and using social media to market the company online.

“I don’t know much about the

construction industry so there is a lot to learn. It’s very different and a new challenge. I look forward to making a lot of new contacts,” added Feist.

Feist added that her ideal posi tion would be to one day work as the marketing manager for a nonprofit organization.

“I will miss working in Vermilion, but I am really excited about my new position at the same time. I would like to thank the Chamber, it was a great o p p or tunit y and I am grate ful that they allowed me to hold the position.”

Feist will still live in Vermilion and is a member on the Good Life Institute board.

Feist’s former position will be advertised as a part time position.

Heavy Oil Show 2016

The 2016 Heavy Oil Show reported great attendance despite low oil prices. People from all over the world took in the event on September 14 and 15.

The show offered nearly 200 exhibitors the opportunity to display their products and services in the oil and gas industry. Of the exhibitors there were 30 new companies this year which the Lloydminster

Heavy Oil Show wants to keep as Oil and Gas related.

The show opened on September 14 at 10 a.m. and continued into the night with a Steak and Shrimp Supper, Opening Ceremonies and Keynote speakers followed by a comedian for visitors and exhibitors entertainment.

Thursday, September 15 was another day full of presentations for visitors to take in and network with the exhibitors.

This year’s annual Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope raised a total of $11,000, and had over 100 people in attendance at the Vermilion Provincial Park on September 11.

The 5th annual Walk of Hope was begun with a ceremonial ribbon cutting and balloon release. Participants walked 2.5, 5 and 10 kilometer lengths, starting from the CN Rail Station in the Vermilion Provincial Park.

The walk remembers Vermilion resident Lyla Fee, who passed away from ovarian cancer in 2014, after a 12 year battle.

cially considering the weather and the way the economy is at the minute,” said Cindy Usenik, who has been involved in organizing the walk for the last few years. “We were down a bit on numbers from last year; we raised about half of what we did last year which was $20,000.

“Vermilion is so supportive. We have a very good town here. There are not very many places in Alberta that do the walk; I believe Vermilion is one of four places that take part. We are very lucky,” said Usenik.

The Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope is the largest and most powerful event of its kind in the country. Held in over 40 communities nationwide, it is

the only walk in Canada to direct all attention and fundraising towards overcoming ovarian cancer.

Held annually during Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month in September, this family-friendly event raises vital funds to provide support, raise awareness and fund much-needed research into prevention, improved treatments and ultimately, a cure.

Top Individual Fundraiser category and received a Spa Gift Basket, which was sponsored by Agland.

Second place went to Cindy Usenik, who received a themed quilt, which was donated by Shellie Bates.

Third place was awarded to Linda Nelson and received a Spa Basket, sponsored by Lakeland Funeral Home. Fourth place went to Charlene Joa, who received a garden ornament.

What the heck is Pickleball? If that was your first thought when you saw this headline, then you may not be aware of the fastest growing game in North America.

Pickleball is fun and easy to play and is suitable for people of varied athletic abilities and ages. It can be played gently or with more energy as you become experienced. Pickleball is popular with seniors because it is not a difficult or strenuous sport as it was actually developed for families to play together.

Pickleball is a racquet spor t that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis (aka ping pong). Two, three, or four players use solid paddles made of wood or composite materials to hit a perforated polymer ball, similar to a wiffle ball, over a net. The dimensions and

layout are the same as a badminton court and the rules are similar to table tennis.

Interested people are in the process of getting an adult Pickleball group going at Vermilion Lakeland College. It will be run one or two mornings a week and people will be able to participate on a dropin basis. All equipment will be provided and basic lessons will be available at no charge to help beginners get started. The first two sessions are also free so you can see if you want to continue playing. If there is enough interest, possible evening sessions could be investigated.

Rusty Bit Contenders Show Skill

The 46th Annual Rusty Bit Horse Show and Gymkhana took place over the weekend of September 17 and 18 at the Vermilion Agricultural Grounds. The show was spread over two days with a Horse Show on Saturday and a Gymkhana on Sunday. A few classes including Trail were included on Saturday. The Rusty Bit Horse Show is organized by the Vermilion Light Horse 4H club with the support of the Coutts family who donate the Rusty Bit trophy every year. See next week’s issue for results. Spartans Invitational Senior Girls Volleyball Tournament

Hundreds of visitors were welcomed at St. Jerome’s School as they hosted the Spartans Invitational Senior Girls Volleyball Tournament on September 16 - 17.

Vermilion athletes included two senior and a junior St. Jerome’s team, as well as J.R. Robson. Competitors also came from Dewberry, Kitscoty, Lloydminster, Paradise Valley, Provost, Wainwright, Forestburg, Innisfree, Vegreville, and as far as Medstead and La Loche, Saskatchewan.

Family members came from near and far to cheer on and support the athletes.

With construction underway, a concession was held outdoors. St. Jerome’s Junior Team showed promise by making it into the Championship pool.

After losing their first set in their playoff game against Provost, the St. Jerome’s A1 team stayed with them point for point. Cheers filled the gynamsium as they battled to keep it that way.

Eventually, they were unable to catch them and fell behind 25 – 19 still earning them a chance to play in the bronze

The St. Jero me’s Fall Supper is in two days so make sure you pick up your tickets at the school office.

The supper will take place on Thursday, September 22 at the Vermilion Regional Centre. There will be two settings: 5:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., as well as the take-out line for those who don’t have the time to eat in. It is a great time to connect with the St. Jerome’s community and the community of Vermilion. We are looking forward to seeing you there.

Congratulations to the Grade 9 Girls Volleyball team for their Gold Medal win at Marwayne on September 10. The 11 players worked well together as a team resulting in victory. Thanks to Mrs. Lysons for coach-

ing for the weekend. The Grade 12,11 and 10 Girls teams all participated in Mega-Volley at J. R Robson. All teams had successful round-robin play, but each lost out in the first round of playoffs. All the girls’ teams played in their home tournament this past weekend.

The Sr. High Boys team had their first tournament in Camrose on September 9 and 10. It is a unique year for the boys as they are a mixed team with players both from St. Jerome’s and J.R. Robson playing. The team had a successful first tournament of the season splitting every game they played and losing out in the first round of playoffs. They gained great experience working together and our excited for the season ahead.

The VES Cross Country Running Club is being offered to interested students in Grades 4-6.

This is a very short season, as it only runs for the month of September. Within that time frame, there are at least two races that athletes may choose to enter - Riverdale and Vermilion.

Practices are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:40-4:30. Permission forms are available at the office, and can be handed in to Miss Taylor. Run Jaguars run.

This event takes in millions of students and educators and thousands of schools across the country, all with one purpose in mind: to beat cancer. For the next couple of weeks, we will be talking with students about Terry Fox, his accomplishments, his message, and his dream. Additionally, each grade will be taking some time

to run or walk laps around our track as we get closer to the Run Day. Our goal is to see if we, as a school, can even get close to matching Terry’s 5 373 km accomplishment. We will be asking all students to bring a toonie on the week of the walk. Two hard days of skating and drills made for an interesting Intersquad g am e o n Sun d ay at t he Ver mili o n stadium. Newly onboarded head coach Ryan Earl, was beyond impressed with the intensity shown on the ice during the game. Earl noted that several players continued to impress as the camp wore on and he is excited to see what is in store as the club prepares to open their exhibition schedule.

Pierre-Olivier Parent notched 2 goals for Team White and Dawson Konieczny also had two markers for Team Black. Rounding out the scoring was Hayden Protsch as Team Black won a tightly contested affair 4-3.

The Tigers have a great mix of returning veterans including leading point producer Lucas Dennill, top goal scorer Ryan VanGend eren and MVP and Rookie of the Year goaltender Danton Brooks. The club begins their weekly practices this week and welcome in the Ft. St. John Huskies who compete in the North West Junior B Hockey League.

The games are at 8pm on Saturday and noon on Sunday at the stadium.

Marauders Score Big In Their First 2016 Victory

On their first defensive series the Marauders took over on downs and then the offensive took six plays to convert their possession into a touchdown setting the tone for the rest of the game as they cruised to a 43-8 victory over the Westlock Thunderbirds.

The Marauders didn’t have to punt in the first half but place kicker David Wilson did had convert four touchdowns. His long kickoffs also were the catalysts for both pinning the visiting Thunderbirds deep in their own end and a single point.

Veteran running back Brayden Chilibeck scored five of the six Vermilion touchdowns including a 99-yard romp to start the second quarter. He racked up both yardage on offense (more than 160 yards) and punishing tackles on the defence.

The first two touchdowns came after the Marauders took over on downs. They forced Westlock to do that five times in the game.

In just his second game, Pierce Joa not only provided blocking support on Chilibeck’s long touchdown run, he scored himself late in the second quarter as he had nothing but daylight in a 10-yard run for the score. With eight seconds left in the half, Joa had an 89-yard score called back by a penalty.

That was one of two Marauder touchdowns called back by penalties. Rookie Ossman Abuzukar returned a punt from midfield but an illegal block brought the ball back to the Marauder 50 in the waning seconds of the game.

As with the two previous games, this one went to straight time late in the third quarter just after the Marauders scored their sixth touchdown to go ahead 43-8.

Post-game the Marauder coaches praised their team for both their defensive and offensive efforts. Offensive coordinator Earl Weidner particularly singled out the offensive line for opening holes for the running game and protecting quarterback Jacob Kotowich when he passed.

The Marauders had relied on their running game through most of the game, but moved to an aerial attack after the game went to straight time. Kotowich connected once with Tanner Throndson and was also intercepted in a half dozen attempts. One of those attempts was to Austin Axley who was playing his first game.

Defensively the Marauders appeared to have solved the misdirection plays and reliance on the wedge formation by the Westlock offence and also won the battle in the trenches. Trevor Thor, Hayden Usenik, Scott Zielinksi, Kyle Theiss, Sk yler Budden, Abuzukar, Throndson and Chilibeck all contributed multiple tackles.

Special teams also played a big role in the game as they supported Wilson’s long kickoffs and almost blocked a punt.

That play came after Wilson’s kickoff sailed into the end zone and Jason Rollison couldn’t get the ball out giving the

Marauders a single. Starting from their own 20, Westlock only managed to gain two yards. Throndson grabbed the ankle of the Thunderbird ball carrier on second down to force the third and eight punt.

Jarret Eyben was in quickly on punter Josh Boyd who just managed to get away a kick that didn’t even get as far as the line of scrimmage. The Marauders took over first and 10 with about 10 yards and a football length to get to the end zone.

Mark Villanueva got four of those yards and then Chilibeck powered across the goal line for the final score of the first half putting the Marauders up 29-8.

Westlock’s only scoring came in the second quarter as they marched from their own one-yard line to a major. Their two point conversion made the score 14-8, as close as the game would be all afternoon.

With a lot of points on the board, rookies got playing time or players got a chance to try another position. Defensive force Ismael “Gord” Udden had two carries in the dying seconds of the game. On his second carry, he turned the wrong way but Kotowich still managed to get him the ball and Gord turned it into a 16-yard gain.

Marauder points after: After missing game two with an injury to his finger, Carter Usenik returned to the roster. He carried the ball for six yards in the first touchdown drive but returned to more familiar territory of delivering punishing tackles for the rest of the game…Eyben who was back for two games is now likely gone for the season with a shoulder injury. He dove at Westlock’s punt returner Jacob Williston, missed, and hit the ground hard…Rookie

Upcoming ‘Head of Vermilion’ Regatta

Over 150 athletes are scheduled to compete on September 24, at this year ’s ‘Head of Vermilion’ Regat ta h o s te d by T h e L a ke l a n d Ru s t l er s and Lakeland Rowing Club. The first launch will be at 10:30 a.m. with the competition running until mid-afternoon.

Rowing Clubs expected to attend include the University of Alberta, the University of Calgary, Lakeland College, Edmonton Rowing Club, Calgary Rowing

Club, Central Alberta Rowing Club, Leduc Rowing Club. Cold Lake Rowing Club and the Lloydminster Rowing Club. Both the Saskatoon and Regina clubs have been invited.

Free pizza will be available at the Boat House.

Anyone looking to take in a competitive event or see first-hand what rowing is all about is welcome to attend and choose which boats to cheer for. Visitors are asked to park at the top of the hill at the Vermilion Provincial Park.
