Approximately 375 people attended Lakeland Funeral Home’s Community Appreciation BBQ on August 31. Raffle prizes, roast beef on a bun and a variety of salads, desserts and live music from musicians Sharlie Donily, Phillip Willis and Ray Blackmore, provided a great atmosphere under a sunny evening sky. A total of $1,250 was raised for this year’s charity of choice, the Walking Through Grief Society. “We like to give back to the community and say thank you; so the community can see us in a different light,” said Lakeland Funeral Home Director and Embalmer, Jim Storch. “Usually it’s all doom and gloom and we have our serious faces on, but this evening we get to let loose a little bit and interact with people. hearted cheery community event. Storch, who received his full license credentials after finishing his Funeral Service Diploma out of Mount Royal University, said the job can be emotionally difficult at times. “You still go home afterwards and cry. We try to put on a strong face but it hits us too because most of the time its family, its friends, its people we see and know in the community,” said Storch. “Behind closed doors we do become emotional, but having a strong family support, which I am very grateful for, pulls us through.” The job involves tasks that entail the embalming and burial of the deceased, as well as the planning and arrangement of the funeral ceremony. “I really enjoy serving the community in this fashion. The families that we work with are so awesome even though they are going through a tough time. Having good co-workers that you are

able to talk with at any point in time about any topic, is half the battle. Talking, after you have a bad day is very important,” said Storch. Storch also ex tended a sincere thank you to all the sponsors who donated gifts and prizes for the evening; Anthony ’s Classic Grill, Lakeland Country Florists, Vermilion Shoppers Drug Mart, Extraordinary Extras, Fantasy Flowers, Elevation, Ve r m i l i o n B o s t o n Pizza, Vermilion Golf Club, Long’s Value Ray Blackmore performs live music outside for the crowds.
