Taking Action To Support Veterans With PTSD

Compelled to create awareness and fundraise to support veterans that suffer with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Amber Fehr from Paradise Valley, began doing 22 push ups for 22 days. Knowing it was important to a friend that had served and nominated her on Facebook, Fehr began her challenge on August 2 as part of the global movement

created by the American organization #22Kill. Fehr is filming her participation throughout the 22 days. In the United States there are 22 veterans that take their lives every day while in Canada, the stats are about one every three weeks. Fehr explained to her children what the campaign is for, and they both wanted to join her in doing push ups to help raise awareness for the veterans that are sad or are having a difficult time after serving.

“I am grateful to be able to live freely in this country. I wanted to find a way to support those who have served and are suffering with PTSD. My push ups are terrible but we’re doing it in support of our veterans,” said Fehr. The Lloydminster, Vermilion, and Wainwright Legion branches all support the Wounded Warriors Program that offers Canadian veterans two PTSD treatment programs, Can Praxis and COPE, among other supports. Although the Intermunicipal Development Plan (IDP) map outlined by the Town of Vermilion at the open house on April 28, 2016 is still in place, councillors shared their concern at the August 2, Town Council meeting that the west border should encompass Brennan Acres and the adjacent institutional land. T h e ea st s i d e wa s al s o a s m all concern, as there have been rumors of an inland grain terminal being built, but the airport had already been compromised by other development along the railway in the past. “The requests to enlarge the IDP area are more for information than development plans within the next 30 years,” said Councillor Clint McCullough. The idea of having the IDP is for the Town of Vermilion and the County of Vermilion River to work in relationship with one another informing each other of future plans to expand the town, so that either party can’t build industrial areas or subdivisions without the other party’s input. Mayor, Bruce MacDuff shared that a past AB Governor General questioned, “Why build a grain elevator at the end of an airport?” Also up for discussion were SL4

beds for community supportive housing, the garden pavilion under way, the Vermilion Public Library basement renovation, the viabilit y of a larger sewage lift station for the proposed Brennan North subdivision, lines for Yellowhead Business Park, and Kiosks stationed around town on behalf of the Tourist Information Centre. A motion was carried for ward to c r e ate a n ew c o m m i t te e w i t h t h e Mayor or Reeve as chair that would be similar to that of the past ‘Living In Place Committee’. The purpose of the new committee would be to build up a larger network of support and move the current project forward by requesting funding for the larger current medical need of Supportive Living Level 4 beds in that area. The bid for the Garden Pavilion was awarded to contractor Cumac Landscaping and the project is underway at L akeland Colleg e. The Colleg e expects to see a 32’ by 32’ cedar unit stand atop the cement pad to upgrade their empty space. Though the Vermilion Public Library should be able to fund the changes within their existing budget, the council was made aware that there may be $35,000 extra cost in order to pass inspection for their basement renovations. The ceiling will need to be double dry walled and the inspector also requested engineered drawings of the electrical panels. A motion was carried for ward to allow a $50,0 0 0 contingency for unknown costs on top of the previous $1,067,000 previously allowed for the Town Maintenance Shop being built by Dundonald Homes. On August 4, a funnel cloud was spotted at approximately 11:30 a.m. in Vermilion moving East at 40km per hour. Environment Canada issued a tornado warning for the County of Vermilion River recommending residents take shelter and placed Islay on high alert. While the funnel cloud moved across town, it dissipated and started again with a couple of smaller funnels forming nearby.

As the eerie weather moved through, there was a report that lightning may have started a grass fire North of Vermilion. This caused emergency crews to direct traffic safely along Highway 41. Reports of funnel clouds in the area included one North of Vermilion and one growing in size south of Kitscoty after the warning had been reduced to a tornado watch. With a severe thunderstorm following close behind, the tornado watch area

grew to include Kitscoty, the City of Lloydminster, Paradise Valley, Provost, Wainwright, Vermilion, Marwayne, Two Hills and Minburn. Heavy rain caused several vehicles along Highway 16 to pull over on the shoulder of the road to wait out the storm. No injury or damage was reported in the local sightings, but as the afternoon progressed, Saskatchewan and Manitoba were also home to tornado sightings that were of larger impact.

I don’t know if it is because I am gradually getting older and time p a s s e s q u i c ker, or i f I am ju s t s o engrossed in the things I do that I don’t realize the time flying by. Is it just me who feels like a large period of the summer vanished before my

eyes? Someone once told me that I need to slow d own and smell the roses once in a while, but I find that ver y hard to do, I love my job, and I love being busy. I was never one to just sit and watch the clock tick by; that is just too boring. I had to do that when I had a back injury and it bloody near drove me nuts. I feel I spend a lot of time relaxing in the evening after work. Last week, I was driving to Clandonald to cover their Fair and as I was driving I noticed the tree leaves slightly changing colour. Fall is on the way, and I hardly remember it being summer. That just seems very weird to me. On a high note, I do prefer the

fall much more than I do the summer months as I am not a fan of the heat. This summer has been a bit wonky for the weather with all the rain we have had so I don’t think I missed a whole lot. I remember grumbling about not knowing what to wear to work each day because I would wake up to the sunshine an d by lun c htime it was pouring out of the heavens. I would almost need to go home and change i nto war m er c l ot h i n g. T h o u g h t h e last couple days it’s been pretty nice except for the freak storm that seemed to blow in out of nowhere causing the funnel cloud and heavy rainfall. That kind of brings me to my next thought. How can I have lived in Alberta for the

last 10 years and that be the first time I have ever seen a funnel cloud up close and personal? I must really be living with my head tucked in the sand as I heard a lot of people say they have seen them on several occasions. I would have missed it again this time if it wasn’t for someone popping in at the office informing us that there was a funnel cloud. Maybe I do need to spend a little more time actually noticing the things around me and spending a little more time smelling the roses. I do agree life is short, and we should take the time to enjoy it more. Maybe that will be my New Year’s Resolution, but I somehow doubt it. LOL.

Upcoming Walk Of Hope

The Annual Vermilion Walk of Hope will be held on September 11, at the CN Station in the Vermilion Provincial Park. Registration will start at 9:30 a.m. followed by the 10km walk at 10 a.m. and the 2.5km and 5km walks at 11 a.m. There will be prizes for the top individual fundraiser and team fundraiser. The Walk Of Hope is participated in roughly 40 communities across Canada to support women and families living with Ovarian Cancer, create awareness and education, and fund research. The program has raised $21 million nationally with $18,742.50 coming from Vermilion. Several ladies within the Vermilion area have been affected by Ovarian Cancer, some of whom have been greatly touched by the Walk of Hope. In order to participate, you can choose to volunteer, walk, or donate.

There is a $25 registration fee for walkers over 18 with the option of joining a team. For donations of $20 or m ore, O var i an Can c er Can ad a provides charitable tax receipts. Those wishing to donate by cash or cheque will receive hardcopy receipts in the mail by December 31. Fundraising can be made easier with an online option, with those donors receiving electronic tax receipts. Canadian Cancer Statistics states that nearly 3000 Canadian women are newly diagnosed each year. Ovarian Cancer is the most fatal kind for women as there is no reliable screening test, causing it to usually remain undetected until the later stages. Unfortunately, this results in a 55% death rate within five years of diagnosis. All the abundant rain this summer has been really great for gardens and crops. Currently fresh beets, onion and dill are ready in the garden. This combination brings back fond memories of my mom and grandmother who often had a pot of borsht on the stove in early summer, using the vegetable that were ready in the garden. This recipe has Ukrainian Polish roots. I love the aroma found when coming into the kitchen with a pot of borsht on the stove. A friend of mine straight from the Ukraine, brought me a bowl of what she calls green borsht. I was very intrigued, and was delighted to find it had it had a similar flavour. Green borsht contains no beets, lots of dill, onion, garlic, potato, chopped kale, parsley or spinach and chopped boiled egg. In traditional borsht, beets are one of the star flavours. The phytonutrients in beets are called betalains and work in the body as antioxidants, anti-inflammatory and agents for detoxification. Recent studies have shown the red pigments in beets

to inhibit the growth of tumor cells in the colon, stomach, prostate, lung and breast. Researchers at Barts and the London School of Medicine have discovered that drinking 2 cups of beet juice a day significantly reduce high blood pressure within 1 hour. In addition to reducing blood pressure the nitrates present in beet juice are found to be protective of the cardio vascular system with anti-platelet properties. Increased beet consumption is correlated with decreased risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Some researchers believe beets are the secret behind the centenarians of Russia, who consume borsht regularly with large amounts of cabbage in their version. Some people may think that taking a multi-vitamin pill will cover the full spectrum of their nutritional needs; however science today knows that there are many compounds called phytonutrients, found in various different kinds of vegetables and fruits in their natural forms that have amazing health benefits. These phytonutrients differ from food to food and are not found in a multi-vitamin pill. A great soup like this is full of vitamins, fiber, phytonutrients and health. For this soup you can start with a meat

or stock base if you have it, and if you don’t have it on hand, then you go with just a vegetable type broth or water. I prefer the flavour of a beef hamburger base or a stock made of chicken bones. If you are using the beef hamburger base then brown 1 lb of hamburger in a large stock pot. Add the onion and garlic, and then add water and the remaining ingredients. If you are making a chicken stock, then first add enough water to cover the bones of an already roasted chicken. Add two bay leaves, 1/4 cup of dill pickle or sweet pickle juice and a spice bag made out of pickling spice (the optional secret ingredient). The pickle juice helps hydrolyze the collagen in the bones, to add more beneficial nutrients to the broth. To make a spice bag place 2 tablespoons of pickling spice on a piece of clean washed cotton and tie it up with string. Drop the whole bag into the water. Boil for several hours and strain the broth from the bones for your soup stock base. Borscht Stock or water or water and canned tomatoes 2 bay leaves 2 cups chopped onion 4 cloves of garlic

2 medium beets cut into strips, you can add the beet tops if you have them 2 cups of carrots cut into 1/4” thick coins 2 cups of potatoes, cubed 2 cups chopped cabbage 1/4 cup fresh chopped dill or 2 teaspoons dried dill weed. Optional vegetables that can be added are 1 cup peas, 1 cup green or yellow beans, 2 cups spinach, 1/2 cup parsley, fresh or canned tomatoes. When you are adding the vegetables, add in the order of cooking time; therefore add the beet roots at the beginning of the process and vegetables like spinach and beet tops that require little cooking time at the end. Season the soup with salt and pepper to your taste preference. When you first add the dill it will seen strong, but the flavor like salt diminishes with cooking. Pepper on the other hand continues to get stronger with cooking time. If the dill flavor has faded away then add a little chopped or dried dill just as the soup is finishing. Remove the bay leaves and discard. Serve with a dollop of sour cream, yogurt or cream.

Back down through the ages, we learned as we studied history at school, there were periods it seems of rising empires at different times that had their time of power and influence and for one reason or another came to grief for one reason or another and the citizens suffered, war, famine and all kinds of oppression from neighbours that invaded and took them over. I don’t remember all the empires or the order they came to power and faded away, but the Babylonians were in power and lost out to the Persians and Alfred the Great over the Persians and so on. Finally the Romans created their empire and ruled for several centuries and really made wonderful buildings, roads, water systems, even invented concrete and roads that still are being used today. when the wild barbarian tribes destroyed that wonderful organized realm, the whole civilized world

The Coming Dark Age

fell into a world of total darkness called the Dark Ages and it lasted for a long several hundred years before it finally came to what we are experiencing now. Yes, it took a while with many trials and wars and people being invaded by their neighbours and killing each other and spending all manners of resources to carry out the whole business in an efficient manner. well, yes they did, and you know what, the whole thing was repeated over and over and my contention is we seem to be letting the whole scenario occur again, only now the methods of killing are much more efficient now then in ancient times. They did with spears, swords and arrows, but they didn’t have long range rockets with atom bombs and all kinds of hideous killing contraptions that can kill millions at a time NOW!! Just since the start of the 20th century we’ve had the two World Wars, and the Korean War, Vietnam War and on and on, The Atom and Hydrogen Bombs have the capacity to kill, I’ve read 20 times the world’s population. Really comforting you

Then add to that the threat of several diseases that are resisting all modern medicines, and my goodness they tell us the bees that pollinate a good portion of our foods are dying off at an alarming rate, and on and on like that. Really I hate to think about these disquieting things, let alone write it down!! Let’s see we hear of wars, rumours of war, bad news about disease and add a shortage of food because we’re poisoning our environment with all sorts of sprays and chemicals. As years go by more and more land is taken from production, paved over and the population keeps increasing. It would seem the time is soon coming when there won’t be enough food to go around. In a good portion of the world that’s already a reality. Yes, the dark ages have arrived in a good part of the world already if we think of Syria and many parts of Africa! Now we can’t pick up a newspaper or watch the news casts without there is a report of mass killing in so many places because some faction believes that the proper proto-

col isn’t being observed in some religion or another. Yes and in the meantime the world leaders who maybe should try to keep the peace are just standing by and seemingly just letting these acts happen without bringing the culprits to justice. We live in a country that is somehow being passive and just saying platitudes and doing really nothing meanwhile the world is falling apart with so much violence and people scrambling to find a safe haven somewhere in the world. There aren’t many places left, you think? Where you could be safe, are there? Meanwhile in our own little corner of the world the incidence of drugs and the like have the courts plugged and it’s becoming a danger for folks to travel and live in a country that just lets the bad guys loose or to run through the courts to reoffend again. In the meantime we are at the mercy of all this going on all around us. The dark ages have arrived in a good part of the world already. Do we really think we are safe from it coming to pass here? The people we have leading us now don’t stir much confidence in me at all!!

The Clandonald Ag Society held their annual country fair on August 6 titled ‘Agriculture: The Heart Of Our Communit y ’ under sunny skies and warm weather. The day kicked off with a pancake breakfast that included bacon, sausage, and eggs. Salesperson Kevin Martin and Shop Foreman Anton Kr ys from Webb’s Machinery were in attendance making pancakes. “We come to the Clandonald Fair every year. I have been coming for at

least the last seven years, and Anton has been coming for at least the last 15 years,” said Martin. “This is the biggest attendance to the breakfast I have seen,” said Krys. Martin jokingly said that they must have made 1720 pancakes. Two person band ‘The Prairie Dogs” entertained the crowd with upbeat country music, while attendees had the opportunity to participate in various activities such as dance heads. ‘Dance Heads’ is a new, innovative form of party entertainment where participants’ heads are superimposed on the bodies of professional dancers and copied onto a disc for

years of enjoyment. The parade started at 11 a.m. and continued for approximately 30 minutes as parade-goers watched on and children scrambled for goodies that were tossed from the passing floats. Once the parade was finished, the crowd dispersed to continue enjoying the fair activities. A concession booth was available all day. Other activities throughout the day included a 25-second timed watermelon eating contest, bingo, face painting, tractor pedal pushers, Clandonald’s amazing race scavenger hunt and children’s

races. New to the fair this year was the laser tag which seemed to be a hit with the younger boys attending the fair. Sisters Rylee and Mykaela Verenka along with their cousin Carson Vogel from Elk Point have attended the Clandonald fair since they were just wee little ones said their grandmother. “We have our face painted every year, it’s a lot of fun,” said Vogel. Nikolai, Magician, Juggler, Clown and Balloon Artist from Edmonton who has been called spectacularly and astonishingly funny and has performed in North America and Europe entertained the audience with his high energy act.
