Member of Parliament for the Lakeland Region, Shannon Stubbs and Member of the Legislative Assembly, for the Vermilion – Lloydminster Constituency, Richard Starke attended a Lakeland College Tour at the Vermilion Campus on July 13.

Proposed funding for a new Animal Health Learning Clinic and a new Dairy Learning Facility were on the table during a meeting prior to the tour. The Alberta Government has okayed the proposal as a project, but hasn’t yet funded it.

Having Starke and Stubbs present, allowed for a hands on view of the necessity of improvements to reach Ottawa.

Though the bulk of educational funding is provincial, there are a few federal options.

During the tour, Stubbs and Starke were shown what areas of the facilities were lacking in order to ensure sustainability in the agricultural training industry in coming years with growing class sizes.

a surgery room. The dogs and cats are often housed in the same room causing anxiety and stress on the animals. The facility often host several labs in one room and the old building has poor ventilation.

“The flooring is practical, but porous and not state of the art,” informed Starke.

The surgery room has exposed pipes and with all of these issues, the facility is at risk of sterilization issues. Accreditation is critical in the courses that are offered, much like a medical school for the degrees to be qualified.

Austrian Rotary Exchange Youth Reflects On Year In Vermilion

Fifteen-year-old, Teresa Thomas from Vienna, Austria saw the end of her Rotary Youth Exchange stay in Vermilion on Sunday, July 17.

“It feels like it was only a two-week trip,” said Thomas.

The Rotary Exchange student spent one year living with four host families in Vermilion, each time becoming a part of those families and their community.

The host families, who are volunteers at the Vermilion Rotary Club, welcomed and cared for her, introducing her to the Canadian culture and lifestyle.

Thomas at tended J.R. Robson School in Vermilion, as well as participating in Rotary activities throughout the year.

Thomas said it was a different experience from Austria, where she says she didn’t know any of the members of her Rotary Club.

“It has been a really cool experi-

ence. We had to figure out a way to live together at the start, and it was hard moving from family to family. The families were all so sweet, and I was able to meet so many new people during my stay,” said Thomas.

Thomas said highlights included skiing in Lake Louise, working on her host family’s farm, visiting the Rockies, watching a Rodeo for the first time and learning how to play hockey.

“Watching a rodeo was a different experience. It looked just like it did in the movies and was something I had never seen before in real life.”

Thomas played on the Vermilion Midget girl’s team and said she greatly enjoyed playing hockey as a new sport.

“I choose Canada as my countr y of choice because I wanted to learn English, and you can go everywhere with English. I love Canada, and I will definitely come back,” said Thomas.

“It gives the youths a chance to learn a new language, experience different

fo o d s , s t u d y d i f fe r e n t su bje c t s, enjoy a new culture and a new way of living. Also, you will learn a great deal about yourself and gain confidence,” said Craig Brown, who was one of the Rotar y Youth Exchange hosts.

There were some tears s h e d at t h e Ve r m i l i o n Rotar y Club’s meeting on July 14 when Thomas said goodbye to ever yone and to the friends she had made over the year.

Rotary Youth Exchange strives to provide thousands of young people worldwide with an opportunity to experience the cultures and accomplishments of people in other countries.

“I like crocheting as a hobby because when I get interrupted, I don’t lose my place, and if I make a mistake, it is easy to pull out and fix. I find it relaxing, and I can take it almost anywhere,” said Eriksen.

Eriksen was taught by her aunt and has been practicing on and off for about ten years. For the last two winters, she has hosted crocheting classes at the Vermilion Public Library and noticed that there was a sense of camaraderie amongst the women who attended.

This prompted her to recreate something similar for people of all ages to enjoy the craft.

The sessions she is offering this summer, are free to anyone looking to visit while they work, or anyone looking to try knitting or crocheting. Three years ago if someone asked me what I wanted to be when I was a child, Journalism would not have been my first choice and to be honest, it wouldn’t have been uttered from my lips. Ever since I was little a girl my choice of career was always geared toward the medical field including my ultimate desire of becoming a Veterinarian because of my deep love for animals, which obviously never happened.

In 2009 I was happily working as a Nursing Attendant, but due to a serious back injury I was deemed unable to perform the required duties of the position. I found myself in a conundrum wondering what I would do for the rest of my life or at least in the very near future. I went back to school and obtained a diploma in Hospital Unit Clerk thinking I would be happy working in the administration part of the medical world, but unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. So, there I was unemployed again and searching for the opportunity to find my niche in the world. Scanning the newspaper I came across a posting by the Vermilion Voice looking for a Sales Rep, and I applied. The same day

My World Of Journalism

I received a phone call from Sue asking me if I would be interested in coming in for an interview? Of course, I said yes and the interview was set up for the following day. Completely excited I prettied myself up that morning and headed out for the interview; surprisingly to me she offered me the position. I was extremely nervous on my first day, and as she patiently walked me through the duties, I thought “ok, this isn’t so tough.”

Little did I know it was a lot harder than I thought. She had told me if you hear a “no” from the other side of the phone don’t take it personally. Well, that is a lot easier said than done. I received a lot of “No’s” at first and eventually came to the point where I didn’t even want to make a sales phone call, but believe me you grow a thick skin and learn not to let it bother you, sometimes.

Within the first two or three days of starting here at the Voice, Sue asked me if I could report on a few things and I instantly said yes, because no one wants to look afraid of doing something, but holy that was a mistake in my mind. I was never a confident writer and had no idea how to conduct an interview with someone. I went to the events and did what I was told in college by one of my instructors to do, “fake it until you make it!”

So here I am almost three years later, and while I still dislike sales, I pick

up the phone each day and complete the calls and even go to businesses to do sale pitches; believe me three years ago I didn’t have the self-confidence to do it well. Three years ago I struggled to write more than 50 words and let’s put it this way, my grammar was atrocious, and still can be, being a newfie and all, but I do my best and learn something new each day Working in the world of journal i s m c an b e ex trem ely unforg iv ing and is listed as one of the worst jobs in the world. But with Sue by my side in this journey I have become selfconfident in what I do. I now sit here week after week writing editorials up to 1000 words, editing articles and building a newspaper each week for print.

Being an editor of a newspaper is an extremely stressful job, it is a position that dictates perfection and perfection is an impossible task. I often miss things I feel I should have caught, and I often carry my work home with me on a regular basis. It requires long hours and sometimes a wrap on the knuckles by readers and Sue who pick up on mistakes I have missed, but it’s a learning experience. Each time a phone call comes in, or someone stops by to point out a mistake, it hits me deeply, and I do beat myself up over it, but I appreciate it. Without someone pointing out the mistakes, I cannot try and

fix them. I cannot learn from them each time. Constructive criticism is one of the most important tools in learning if done properly.

The world of journalism is hard and there are days I feel like running out of the office screaming with frustration, but then I look to Sue, who is here even when she isn’t physically here.

Her devotion and hard work have made this newspaper the success it is today, and while there are days we have to try and slow her down because her mind is doing a million things at once, she is the glue that keeps us together. She is one of the most important people in my life.

She has taught me anything is possible. That anyone can learn if they have the desire to learn and that respect and loyalty can carry you a long way in this world. Not every day is a great day, and sometimes it’s hard to make your way through the rough days, but you have to keep your chin up, smile and think to yourself tomorrow will always be better.

This week we are celebrating our 12th anniversary, and if it wasn’t for Sue and our valued customers and readers, we could not be the success we have become. Lloydminster area resident Sam Lundell recently completed his first m u s i c v i d e o for h i s or i g i n a l s o n g “ Ev e r y t h i n g ”, w h i c h i s s e t t o b e released July 18, 2016.

Sam team e d u p wit h Ed m o nto n filmmaker Justin Brunelle and cinematographer David Baron (formerly of Vermilion) to create a thought provoking and inspirational video that chronic les a young woman’s journey of self-reflection on a life-changing hitchhiking trek through Alberta’s countryside. The Sam Lundell Band’s energetic and passionate per formance drives the video’s message of finding freedom and love in what seems to be the darkest of times.

This collaboration was possible as a result of a grant from TELUS O p t i k™ T V ’s STO RY H IVE , w h i c h awarded $10,000 to 17 Alberta and British Columbia Artists. STORYHIVE is a production funding and distribution competition for emerging content creators in western Canada ( www. storyhive.com ).

B r u n e l l e a n d B a r o n p r ev i o u s l y worked on STORYHIVE funded proje c t s, i n c lu d i n g m u s i c v i d e o s a n d web series productions. In search of a musician to collaborate with for this year’s STORYHIVE competition, Justin reached out to small Alberta c o m m u n i t i e s to f i n d a yo u n g a n d talented singer/songwriter, which led

him to Lundell. According to Brunelle, “ Sam’s music captures his unique perspective on the world. This music video will bring him and his music up to the next level and spread the word about Sam Lundell”.

After being approached by Brunelle, Lundell reviewed Justin’s por t folio and knew immediately that this partnership with Justin and his team at Moving Ar tistr y Productions would be brilliant. Lundell recalls, “Justin’s previous work resonated with me; his eye for lighting and nature captured my vision for telling this story.”

Following an all-night filming session in the forest, multiple stops in numerous Alber ta towns and cities (including Vermilion and Islay), hours of production and editing, both Lundell and Brunelle are thrilled with the outcome. “ I am ver y pleased with the end result and look forward to sharing this story. I am anxious to hear people’s reaction to the song and what questions they ask themselves as a result,” says Lundell. “In addition to the funding we received through STORYHIVE, I am thank ful for all of the project support from family, friends, volunteers and the behind the scenes crew who made this all possible.”

It looks like we may be in for a damp summer. It may not be fun, but better than droughts of ye a r s p a s t . I t h i n k we will see a lot of sunny mornings and early af ternoons but rainy late evenings and nights.

The weather has been great for the crops and my garden, and the darn lawn seems to like it as well because it is thick green and grows worse than weeds. My hay field is ready to be cut, grass and alfalfa are higher than my pup, and she can hide very well.

S peak ing of pu ps, my young est daughter Nikki lost her love of her life, her best buddy and fur baby “Justice” a pup at heart but he was over 13 plus years old. He had a good life and was shown as much love as possible, but he just got old and was partially blind, and his overall health turned for the worst. There was no choice but to end any suffering.

We have to give thanks and a shout out for the professionalism of Dr. Judy and staff at the Wainwright Veterinary Services for the delicate care of Justice over the year s, and g oing beyond and above the call of duty. Dr. Judy The

and staff came to my oldest daughter Shawna’s home and peacefully ended any suffering the old boy was in, it was done in Shawna’s back yard on the lawn. It was a beautiful afternoon, and the sun was shining, Nikki held him for the first needle than laid him on a big pillow for the second shot, it was so well done he didn’t even feel the needles. Justice went so peacefully it looked like he was simply napping; again words can’t thank Dr. Judy and staff enough for such outstanding and professional care and understanding.

Nikki is having justice cremated so he can be by her side forever as he was for near half of Nikki’s life, she will /is missing him dearly and will take some time to adjust without his companionship.

Mother nature doesn’t play fair with our pups aging so fast. Thirteen plus years is considered a long life for a pup and have heard of some making it to near 20 years old but really showing age. It’s sad as many of us consider these pups as part of the family, our best friends that give us unconditional love and they are taken away from us way too soon.

It has been discovered the smaller the dog, the longer the lifespan overall. L ar g e d o g s u su ally live 10 -13 years and giant breeds only 7-8 years.

It breaks my heart that I only have 10 more years with my Miss Oohohh, but I intend to give her the best 10 years possible and will be grateful to her for those 10 years. I like most wish they had the lifespan of their human companions.

Ironically at just the right timing, on the same day, Nikki became a surrogate mother to a couple of fluff balls.

Nikki has some very tall mature spruce trees in her yard, and a set of beauti-

ful Hawks made one of the trees their nesting site.

Hawks hatch their young; up to five young one’s several days apar t, so you really see the difference in height and grow th between all the chicks; with the first twice the size of the latter last hatched.

Now the two smallest chicks decided to go for a walk, it was a short walk and fell to the ground, or in my opinion, the older chicks simply bumped the younger chicks out of the nest, harsh but nature’s way of survival of the fittest.

A call was put into the Alberta Fish and Wildlife office but as I suspected they suggested simply put ting the young ones back into the tree and let nature take its course. Well, not on my daughters watch. Both Nikki and Shawna did put the chicks back into the tree and made a makeshift nest for them to sit in relative safety.

The chicks pure white like snowballs would have surely perished without my daughter’s aid.

The girls feed them some raw meat and yours truly dug down deep and found an older package of elk steaks for the menu, which the chicks clearly enjoyed and devoured.

At feeding time each day the pair were/are ver y boisterous with their dinner call, both girls had the birds eating right out of their hands, and in just days one could see the chicks grow intensely. In less than a week, the chicks went from white fluff balls to adult feathering and colors and transformed into majestic birds of prey. The chicks at feeding time half hopping and half flying were all over the trees but would come when Nikki called them. Now at feeding time they will fly from the trees to Nikki’s patio rail and

call for momma (Nikki). The chicks still are not flying too far but enough to stay out of danger.

The parents during this time were ex tremely busy with the remaining chicks in the nest, and I am not sure if they even acknowledged the two outcasts, an imprint of nature’s way.

So I have no doubt that my daughters saved the lives of these two majestic birds of prey, cared and nurtured for them, I am super proud of them for all their hard work.

I always liked to go exploring out of the way places that promised some exotic fishing, because maybe it was a challenge to just get there. After I moved up Elk Point way and wasn’t as actively farming, there was a spell in the spring when my truck wasn’t busy; I could take some time to go fishing!! It always makes me wonder how such life altering memories can happen in such little insignificant ways and turn out to be so very memorable. One afternoon on my way home from Elk Point, I saw a lowboy semi, loading hay. Thinking I had hay for sale, maybe I should see if he’ll buy mine!! Well, yes he did, and that started a friendship with John Marsh, and he wanted to get to know someone who he could get to go fishing with him!! He had acquired a nice 16 ft fibreglass boat that had a 150hp outboard motor. I told him I’d gladly share my knowledge with him. Come early spring and ice was out in the northern lakes I got a call from John, wondering if I’d like to go fishing for a day

or two. He had in mind a trip to Keeley Lake that is east and north of Meadow Lake town and on a typical Saskatchewan road of gravel washboard, I think designed to keep the crowds away. Well anyway as we headed east on Hi-way 45 John said, “Got an old fishing buddy that’s coming along too.” There came the most important day in my life as a fishing fanatic, I met Bill Hamernyk, who had a fishing tackle box the size of a garden shed. He had every really wonderful lure in there, in all the right colours too!!

Yes and he loved to hear me play my harmonica, which I did as we drove those seemingly endless dusty miles.

The resort on Keeley Lake actually on a creek that runs into the lake, and you launched your boat on the creek about a quarter mile from the lake and so then fishing water is of course on the far side, about five miles across. Our boat with its big motor had us going I’ll say about 50 miles an hour, faster than I’d ever believed a boat would go, and we soon were where the boats of other fishermen were lined up long this honey-hole.

Since I had a “Lowrance Fish Lo-Cator I said, “Let’s find a place that isn’t so

crowded,” and after a few discussions we trotted along looking for similar conditions in a part of the lake that was deserted.

Well, my fish finder, told me that maybe I’d found what I was looking for, and we anchored the boat. I got out my lead head jigs and opened my can of worms. “If they’re here, this will tell us.” This was new for both these men, and they only decided to try them when I’d landed several fish!!

Yes, I’d found a new honey hole, and we had our limits in it seemed like no time.

In Saskatchewan in that lake, there was only one place to land and the wardens knew how to count. We caught such really wonderful Walleyes, and that was our first of many trips. The word came that the Lac La Plonge was yielding big lake trout, so next thing we were planning a trip to Beaval north of Green Lake up north on Hi-way 35.

Next spring right after ice out when the trout are in shallow water spawning we headed up that long road to that seemingly wonderful world of wilderness “Lac L Plonge” in a huge lake over 20 miles across with water in spots even a hundred feet deep. And yes, we did catch those wonderful big and taty lake trout, and we

ate like kings and had arms tired from reeling them in.

One memorable day on the far side of the lake, right at noon we caught a nice trout of 4 or 5 pounds and decided to have a shore cooked dinner. I filleted the fish and burned a nice bed of coals and got out my shore lunch kit and started cooking the fish and making coffee and making that memorable meal. Yes, it was special. Bill said he’d never tasted better fish just minutes from the water, cooked in such a wild, beautiful place. Also memorable were the waves we battled on the way back across that big lake. The wind blew like that for it seemed ever, and we thought of heading home. A fellow fisherman told us there was a “ Pine House Lake about 60 miles fur ther on the Churchill River system, which had sheltered water that the wind didn’t matter if we’d like to try it. Well, that was another insignificant detail that turned into another really memorable time, To say the fishing was fabulous would be a definite understatement, but I’ve been back several times, and it always was a fabulous experience fishing is an exercise in exploring and testing the unknown.

Take A Trip Down Memory Lane At The Mannville Museums

The Village of Mannville is offering two museums for public viewing this summer.

Mannville Crossroads Museum was previously a country school that became a church in 1956 known as the Ukrainian Catholic Church until 2008 when the Mannville Historical Society purchased it, and it became a museum.

said that some unique features include a doll collection from all around the world and a spoon collection.

“All of the contents of the museum were donated by the people of Mannville,” said Trynchuk.

The Mannville Historical Telephone Exchange museum was recently renovated by the Mannville Historical Society members.

During the summer months, the museum serves as the tourist booth

information centre. The museum also has a unique story behind it.

A woman named, Alice Rutherford, ser ved as the Mannville Telephone Exchange agent-operator for 48 years.

Rutherford ran the switchboard and had living quarters at the back of the building. Today her original furniture, which was given to her great granddaughter from British Columbia is on display after it was donated back to the museum.

It was Mannville’s first telephone building in 1917 and was the first in northern Alberta. Rutherford retired in 1964.

The Mannville Crossroads Museum summer hours for July and August are on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Fridays from 10 - 4 p.m.

I t ’s s h e e r j o y t o look through wallpaper books and see all the interesting patterns. The undulating d esig ns, the coordinate papers, and all the color runs that each paper comes in. I love finding an amazing paper and visualizing the perfect place for it to be used. Wallpaper has made a comeback, but for me, it has never been g o ne. The new pat ter ns, c o lour s, and styles make wallpaper an easy way to add a modern update or some creative whimsy. It could be a paper o f b i r c h t r e e s , a c o p p e r t ex t u r e, distressed wood, ogee geometric or weather worn damask. The patterns

are endless.

Wallpaper speaks; it is the words of your walls, and it is setting the stage for the rest of the room. Wallpaper makes a statement by adding visual or actual texture to walls. It ’s most powerful statement can be found in its color, but it’s pattern can also say “wow.” Walls are the largest area in a room, and how they are covered can often set the tone for the whole room.

The color and the pattern of the wallpaper will be a big influence in how the room feels. Use a bold paper and you will have a bold room. Use gentle colors and patterns and the walls will whisper tranquil thoughts.

Wallpaper borders, grandma flowe r s , a n d wa i n s c o t e d p a p e r wa l l s belong to a past time capsule. Now wallpapers are often used, floor to

ceiling on one wall as a feature, or on several walls to wrap you in pattern.

To add more impact to a bedroom, you could wallpaper the headboard wall. Add wallpaper to a living room wall for punctuation. The wall could also be covered in an amazing photographic wall paper mural that will add new artistic direction to the room.

Wallpapers tend to make a room fe el c oz y an d st imulat ing. Stro ng impact wallpapers can be effective in entryways and powder rooms that are less likely to be occupied for extended periods of time. You can also use these bold pat terns ef fec tively by selecting one wall in a dining room.

Overly strong pat terned wallpaper can feel like visual overload if it is on all the walls, as it competes with other objects in the room. A wallpapered

I am so sickened by the recent racially motivated events in the United States that I can hardly think straight.

I phoned my brother in Austin and asked him if the U.S. is going to hell in a handcart. He agreed that it just may be.

We grew up in “ rac ist ” Americ a where people had the attitude that blacks should ride at the back of the bus or give up their seats to whites, where Blacks could not attend white

universities or colleges, where the slums meant areas of the city popul ate d by B l a c k s , w h e r e c h u r c h e s were either for whites or Blacks. And, where my Sunday Sc hool teac her was totally stumped when we learned about Adam and Eve and I asked what colour their skin was.

Electing a Black President has not changed the landscape of racial b i g otr y. W h ere d o e s t h i s at t i tu d e toward others who are not “ white” come from? has become such a part of our social culture, it is hard at times to think and speak correctly without fear of offending someone.

Home and church are the only bastions of educational tenants left for forming attitude. And, how many r e a d i n g t h i s at te n d c h u r c h r e g u larly? I don’t. I walked out of the little church I attended in 2004. Why? The substitute minister decided to make a celebration of the Lord’s Last Supper (Communion) into a protest sermon on the fact that the bill to make gay marriage legal in Canada was before the House. Rabbit Show Addition To Vermilion Fair

Hop on down to the newest show in town this year at the Vermilion Fair and view the unique addition of the Rabbit Show.

“Everybody loves rabbits. We have four entries so far, but I am hoping that we get 100. It is the show’s first year, so I’m not expecting too much; even 50 rabbits would be great,” said Charlotte Wasylik, the Vermilion Ag-Society Rabbit Show Chair.

“Anyone who raises their own rabbits for show is welcome. We are looking for rabbits a little more elevated than your regular old pet rabbits. The rabbits need to have a registered tattoo, and they can do the tattoo at the show. If you enter a rabbit in a class, it has to meet the set requirements for that breed; it can’t just be a crossbreed.

“There are a lot of different breeds, varieties and colour variations within a specific breed. There are breeds from all over the world,” explained the young chair of Vermilion’s first Rabbit Show.

Some of the different breed entries at the show will include New Zealand and Flemish Giant along with the meat classes and colour variety classes,” informed Wasylik.

E.A.R.S. is a nonprofit Edmonton based Rabbit and Cavy club which relies 100% on the support from its members and sponsors. It is a club where people who share a love for rabbits come together and build friendships.

“The Edmonton Area Rabbit Society had contacted us last year in mid-July and said they were interested in hosting a show at the Fair but by that time it was too short of notice for us. We asked them to keep us in mind for next year, and we started working on it in January,” explained Wasylik.

“I think the Rabbit Show is a nice new addition to our Fair and that it will bring something different to the Fair this year, and I hope it will continue into the future.”

The two Rabbit Show judges will be flying in from Washington and are members of the American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA). The judges adhere to the strict standards which have been set by the ARBA Board of Directors.

Heritage Pavilion Hall on Friday, July 29 and will start at 10 a.m. All show rabbits must be in the Heritage Pavilion Hall by 8:00 a.m.

Garden Paradise Tours On Young Drive

The Vermilion Communities in Bloom Committee hosted their annual selfguided CIB garden tour on July 13.

Ten proud homeowners opened their gardens for public viewing on Young Drive, each displaying the fruits of their labour.

Participants on the tour followed the wooden flower sign that identified the featured gardens, all within walking distance of each other. The well-manicured gardens showcased modern, quaint and tranquil outdoors spaces.

Trisha Mechor, a stay at home mother, admitted that maintaining the garden is a lot of hard work but that it is worth it.

“It’s a lot of hard work and sometimes tears, but you can see the results. I find it a relaxing and calming activity. We don’t start gardening until late in May because you never know when the frost can hit and undo all your work,” said Mechor.

Mechor says that she purchases 75% of her garden supplies in Vermilion and the rest in Lloydminster.

“It’s a nice, peaceful feeling sitting down outside with a cup of coffee in the morning. This year I purchased a lot of

new flowers that I never had before, but I still stick with the Marigolds because they are hardy. My husband is just as involved in the gardening as I am. The front is his and the back is mine,” said Mechor.

Young Drive resident, Debbie Neigum walked people through her garden, which had a variety of edibles including apple trees, Saskatoon berries, as well as an assortment of vegetables.

Other gardens featured cozy corner getaways with a hammock tucked under overhanging trees, pristinely manicured lawns, along with the newest garden art, statues, fountains and chic antiques that

blended into the landscape.

Vermilion Communities in Bloom Chair, Donna Moon said that everyone enjoyed the tour as well as, the beef on a bun and strawberry shortcake at the lawn party.

“We had a great turnout. I would like to thank the public for supporting us and for keeping the community beautiful. The national judges for the 2016 Communities in Bloom Competition will be coming on July 25, and the winners will be announced in late October at the National Convention in Regina,” said Moon.

Dewberry Brother-In-Laws Go Head To Head For Calgary Stampede Title

Dewberry driver, Vern Nolin, driving for Dentons Canada, held consistently high standings each night during the 2016 Calgary Stampede, leaving him in the top eight drivers to qualify for the Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby’s Championship final heats.

Nolin started off the year with his first season in the World Professional Chuckwagon Racing (WPCA) circuit after 16 years racing in the Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association (CPCA) tour.

Winning the second show of the year

in Saskatoon, Nolin was sitting fourth in the world charts coming into the Calgary Stampede. The 43-year-old’s big run carried him to the top of the Rangeland Derby standings at the end point of the qualifying process, showing great depth in his barn with his young wheel outfit of firstyear horses.

2015 was a memorable year for Nolin when he qualified for the Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby’s Championship Final Heat for the first time in his career.

Nolin held the lead over his brother-inlaw, Kurt Bensmiller, the two-time defending Calgary Stampede champion, with

While, Bensmiller, driving for the Tsuu t’ina Nation, held steady in the top five over the week, he didn’t perform as well as he did last year.

“This was a rebuilding year for me because I had to change out some of my horses due to freak injuries. We are only using two of the same horses that we used the last year. I feel that my new horses are doing good, we are holding our own, we are not having the big runs like we used to but hopefully we can stay in the top eight, make it to The Dash and have a shot at it on Sunday.”

Bensmiller said that he had no intention of taking it easy on his brother-in-law, Nolin.

“I will be treating it like every other race; I won’t be going easy on him just because he is dating my sister. I feed my family from this sport,” said Bensmiller, the former 2014 and 2015 GMC Rangeland Derby champion.

With Calgary experiencing the wettest Stampede in years, Bensmiller said that the wet weather and “sloppy” conditions on the track didn’t bother him too much but added that “weather can change everything.”

Little Cowpokes – Big Action

Lots of dust and lots of heart was witnessed during the Little Cowpokes Rodeo at the Lakeland College Arena on July 13. Children competed in barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, goat tail un-tying, break away roping, and team roping events.

“I love Little Cowpokes because it gives us more opportunity to ride, and make friends. There are less competitors so it allows for more local and age relevant competition,” said Kristen Sardoff

Children had practiced at home and through previous clinics put on by the association. Regardless of their age, it was apparent that these kids were serious about rodeo and having a blast doing what they love.

The Come By The Hills festival can be described with one word, as “intimate”. Lakeland Rowing Club Development Camp

The weather stayed good with clear skies and calm water for Lakeland Rowing Club’s Rowing Development Camp on July 16 and 17. A large turnout of roughly 31 rowers attended the camp. Rowers worked on integrating strength and conditioning principles into a technical rowing camp. All athletes received plenty of time on the water in different boats and training with different crews, also with technical lifting sessions covering weight training technique and programming. The Coach will work with school staff to provide integrated, school-based and community mental health prevention, promotion and early intervention programming to students. The Coach will need to be able to work with and liaise with professional agencies. Computer skills are necessary.

A Bachelor’s degree in a related human service is required. Applicants must provide a clear RCMP Criminal Record with a Vulnerable Sector Check and a clear Child Intervention Check. A reliable vehicle is essential.

Salary for this position starts at $50,000 and increases based on experience.

Motor Vehicle Collision with a Street Lamp

Vermilion RCMP Submitted

On July 7, 2016, Vermilion RCMP were c alled to a c ollision on 49 Avenue near 50Street in Vermilion, Alberta where a Chevy Blazer went of f the road and hit a street lamp. The town office and ATCO electric were notified and attended. The lamp post was deemed secured. There were no injuries as a result of this accident. The driver of the vehicle was charged with abandoning a Motor Vehicle on a Highway, $310, and Fail to remain in the Centre of the vehicle’s lane, $233.

Michigan Friends At Colonial Days

A large parade kicked off this year’s Colonial Days in Lloydminster on July 13. MP Shannon Stubbs and MLA Dr. Richard Starke were both active participants in the parade.

The festivities were ongoing from July 13 – 16 at the Lloydminster Exhibition Grounds. Several agricultural shows took place featuring dogs, sheep, cattle, and horses.

On Thursday night, Pop Evil, a band out of Grand Rapids, Michigan put on a killer Rock show.

Members constantly worked the stage and the audience, drawing their fans in closer and closer.

Not a single member went unnoticed.

Drummer David Miller from Detroit, Michigan who was filling in, learned all the songs in the two days prior to the show, and was even given a sweet solo.

Dave Grahs and Nick Fuelling on guitar and Matt DiRito on bass, were also able to showcase their talent and personality.

Lead singer, Leigh Kakaty was born in Kingston, Ontario and was happy to be kicking off their tour this year in Canada’s border city. Boasting Canadian pride right down to the Smarties, he personalized the show by donning his guitar for their song, ‘100 In A 55’.

The grit in his voice could be heard while singing, ‘Hero’, and multiple encores led

them to play ‘Footsteps (Go Higher)’.

Energy never ceased, and Pop Evil rocked it right to the end.

“It’s never about how many people come to see a show; it’s about what kind of people. There is no greater feeling than your fans – your friends, singing your song back to you. I promise to keep coming back!” said Kakaty as he closed their show in Lloydminster.

T h e we e k ’s m u s i c a l t a l e nt a l s o featured Streethear t and the Swan Brothers. Saturday’s events included smashing action at the Demolition Derby, followed by the Kentucky Headhunters performance and a finale of fireworks.

On July 14, people bustled through the Colonial Days midway.

Wednesday, Canadian classic rockers Streetheart took a packed Colonial Days grandstand through a thorough retrospective of their 8 studio albums. Original vocalist Kenny Shields and keyboard player Daryl Gutheil were joined by long time guitar player Jeff Neill and a solid rhythm section of Tim Sutton on drums and Jake Jacobs on bass had the raucous crowd singing along to a two hour parade of hits. Formed in 1976, Streetheart released 6 studio albums, two live albums and a collection of greatest hits and still tours Canada doing 8-10 shows a year sounding every bit as tight and powerful as ever.
