On July 8, under sunny skies and warm temperatures, the success of the spray park could be seen as children of all ages were frolicking under the sprays of water while parents visited and watched their children enjoy the variety of water features.

The spray park became a reality in May 2014 due to the tireless efforts of corporate and community sponsors who raised more than $110,000. While the Alberta Government provided $150,000 and the Town of Vermilion, who covered the remaining funds towards the $400,000 project to turn the old out of commission wade pool into a first-class recreation opportunity.

The facility is free for Vermilion residents and visitors to utilize, providing parents the opportunity to hold outside birthday parties for their children encouraging physical activit y as well as the opportunity to splash their way to coolness on hot summer days in a safe and relaxing atmosphere partially due to the non-slip surface in the spray park.

Af ter wards the DVD is distributed to seniors’ homes in Vermilion, Islay and Mannville.

Apar t from the music the bands provide during the parade, Cameron stressed the louder the better when it comes to floats. “It’s all about getting people motivated to take part and I would advise people to have lots of music and make lots of noise with their float. It really engages the crowd and is a great way to get your business noticed,� said Cameron.

Cameron added there is no registration fee or pre-registration required to be in the Parade and that is why the parade is such a huge success.

Preparations Underway For The 110th Vermilion Fair

The Vermilion Fair is a annual signature event on the community calendar.

The Vermilion Agricultural Society was established in 1906 and this year will be the 110th Vermilion Fair.

“It always sneaks up on a guy!” said Tyler Moses, who says that he is enjoying his 2nd year as the Fair President.

“I really love to see people returning each year for the annual Fair. It gives people a great opportunity to return for class reunions and social gatherings.”

Every year the Fair is organized by the Vermilion Agricultural Committee, which is made up entirely of volunteers.

“This year we have over 150 volunteers. There is a huge amount of preparation involved every year and each committee runs their own show. The reason the Vermilion Fair works so well is because everybody is really committed to what they do, and everybody does a really great job because they enjoy what they do,” said Moses.

The Ag Society is expecting 25,000 people to pass through town to attend the

fair during the three days.

Fair goers can enjoy a variety of events such as the parade, trade show, antique tractor parade and pulls, modified tractor pulls, animal judging, pony chuckwagon and chariot races, entertainment and agricultural/horticultural displays and so much more.

“Each year there are numerous exhibitors showcased with a friendly competitive spirit.

If you’re an old fella, you will probably like the antique tractor pull. If you are a young guy into crop production, you will probably like the machinery display; and if you’re into beef you would probably enjoy watching the heifer show,” said Moses.

“It only costs $5 per day to get into the fairgrounds. We are a very economical fair, the price is cheap compared to other agricultural fairs,” said Moses.

Doug Stewart, the co-ordinator of the Heavy Horse Hitches show said that the economic downturn is affecting the Heavy Horse attendance in this year’s Fair.

“The heavy horse show is one of the most expensive events that we put on at the fair. It costs a lot of money for heavy

horse rigs to travel here and perform,” said Stewart.

Heavy Horses, featuring all breeds including Shire, Clydesdale, Percheron and Belgian, attract large crowds each year at the Vermilion Fair, displaying their power and grace on a grand scale.

“We have been very fortunate to have local contenders, as well as, the more advanced who compete in the Calgary Stampede participate in our Heavy Horse show every year and that is why we have two different classes because everyone is welcome. We have been really happy with the crowds that have turned out to watch the events from the grandstand over the last few years.

“Saturday is a huge day at the Fair and Saturday afternoon is always a highlight with the six horse hitch classes combined with the finals of the Mounted Cowboy Shooters,” said Stewart.

The Fair will start on Thursday, July 28 and wrap up on Saturday, July 30 with a fireworks display following the final grandstand performance. Twin Kennedy will perform their duo act at the Grandstand on Thursday, July 28 at 8:30 p.m. Hey

Romeo will perform on Friday, July 29 at 8:30 p.m. and Burn ‘N’ Mahn will perform at the Grandstand on Saturday, July 30 at 8:30 p.m. Entertainment for the Beer Gardens over the three days will feature Mojave Iguanas.

Tom Durocher - The Canadian Horse Whisperer

Horse Whisperer, Tom Durocher is Canada’s only certified Canadian Horse Whisperer instructor. Durocher says that Horse whispering is more about listening than whispering. The professional horsemen who practice this skill understand how to read the body language of horses and are fully aware of the psychology of the horse.

Durocher lives on the Fishing Lake Métis Settlement in Frog Lake, where he was born and raised. Durocher is a Métis and takes pride in his First Nation upbringing.

On June 5, 2005, Durocher received his Instructor certification and was endorsed

by Monty Roberts as being Canada’s only Certified Monty Roberts Instructor.

With over 35 years of experience working and training horses, Durocher is a gifted horse whisperer.

Durocher travels all over Canada today working as a horse whisperer and teaching others how to communicate

with horses using ‘The silent language of horses’ and the skills he has learned.

“Not only is this training applicable to horses, but it can also be used and implemented in our day to day interactions with others.”

Tom worked as a farrier/horse trainer using the “Old way” for 25 plus years before going to train under Mont y Roberts, award-winning trainer of championship horses, best-selling author, and Hollywood stunt man, in California.

“I learned more in one month with Monty about horses than I did in my whole life in 2001. We had to study the inside of the horse to know the outside of the horse.”

D u r o c h e r s p e n t ye ar s s t u d y i n g horses and their behavior in their natural surroundings learning to read the silent but powerful communication called body language.

From the most subtle changes in facial expressions, drooping lower lips, ear movements, the flick of a tail, the stamp of a foot, to rolling eyes and rearing, the

horse’s entire language of communication is expressed in clear terms, for those who learn to interpret it.

“Monty watches you, and he decides who moves on to become an instructor,” explained Durocher.

“You are dealing with trust, respect and honesty with the horse, and we have to learn and understand that the horses can also heal you. You have to love what you are doing. I tell people that more often, you are healing each other, horses can heal you more than you think.

A lot of feelings come out. A lot of people don’t treat horses with respect; they treat them as a tool. You have to watch the horse and understand fear,” said Durocher.

Durocher worked with Mustangs (wild horses) in California, “they are quick and intelligent, and a lot of times they are not wild they’re just free.”

Durocher agrees that horses used in Chuckwagon racing are doing what they love, and they were born to run. “These

horses are bred strong, and their adrenaline is always high. If you are excited, the horses feel that, horses will feed off your energy.”

Durocher says his horse Thunder was one of the best teacher’s he ever had in life.

“In the mid-1990s, Thunder had a lot of issues. I didn’t realize it, but I was causing the problem, and he was trying to tell me to slow down, ease up, don’t pressure me and I won’t pressure you.

It took four years for me to understand what was wrong. It really broke my heart when Thunder passed away. I always tell my students when I’m teaching, never give up on a horse, find a way around the problem and listen to what the horse is telling you,” said Durocher.

“Once Thunder and I understood each other we were the best team, I used to call him the professor because he taught me who I was.”

Achievement day. Many of our members raise their own lambs as well. They breed their ewes to lamb about mid March in order to have market lambs achieve industry standard market weights by Achievement day which is between 105 to 115 lbs. The members have learned a lot about animal husbandry which includes livestock health, livestock nutrition, animal behavior, animal handling as well as preparing an animal for the show ring.

This week I had originally sat and written my editorial complaining about the weather and how it has been kind of weird and wonky, but I didn’t feel satisfied with it. It is my desire to write about a topic I hope will be interesting to our readers or at least informative or educational.

Anyone who knows me well knows my mind is constantly thinking, it’s like I can never really shut it off even when I am sleeping. I have this extremely bad habit of hearing about something on the news or in life in general and having it stick with me. I bring things I hear and see too close to my heart sometimes, and even when I am sleeping my mind is still replaying the things that are bothering me. Many nights

during my supposed sleep time I dream about topics I feel I should be writing about in my editorials, or dreaming about something I had heard about during the day or even a week ago. I find the only way I can quiet it all down is to talk about it, so here goes.

As I stated in the beginning, I had originally written about the weather, but I haven’t been able to shake a topic that I feel is important. I feel very strongly that everyone’s life is important! Not just the lives of a certain country or group.

In the last couple of weeks, ISIS attacked Turkey’s main airport and killed at least 45 people. ISIS then carried out an attack in Dhaka, an upscale neighbourhood of Bangladesh’s capital, where they raided a popular cafe killing two police officers, and at least 22 civilians out of dozens of hostages. I am assuming the group felt they didn’t yet cause

enough pain and devastation and had an ISIS suicide truck bomb rip through a busy shopping district in Baghdad killing close to 200 people including at least 25 children and 20 women; as they broke their fast for the holy month of Ramadan.

As I watched the devastation this terrorist group had caused, and imagined the heartache the families of the victims were going through; I found myself wondering if Facebook would give us the opportunity to change our profile pictures to the Turkish flag or the Iraqi flag and so-on, like they did when Paris was attacked back in November to show our solidarity?

As I suspected, the option wasn’t available. There were no hashtags #prayforIraq, #prayingforTurkey or #prayingforBangladesh as there was when the attack happened in Paris.

Now, let’s move on to the events in Dallas that happened on Thursday, during

a ‘Black Lives Matter’ rally. Five police officers were killed in what was said to be an ambush setting. News coverage is on every news station and the first thing I saw when I opened Facebook that day was a picture post of a blue candle saying “Light a Blue Candle” for the fallen officers in Dallas. Just as I anticipated it didn’t take long for people to start the trend to show their solidarity for the fallen police officers.

You may be asking yourself, ok what’s her point? Well, it’s quite simple. All lives are important; all lives matter! Why do we as a society cherry pick whose lives are important enough to recognize in the news for more than five minutes or through social media, and whose lives are not important enough to recognize? I find it very disturbing; if we are not going to show an act of solidarity and caring for all lives lost through acts of terror then we shouldn’t do it at all!

Doctors Need More Medical Equipment

Council for the Town of Vermilion authorized $10,000.00 from the Legislative Reser ves for the purchase of medical equipment for the Midtown Medical Clinic at the Council meeting on July 5.

There will be six doctors in total working out of the Clinic, which is owned and operated by the Town of Vermilion.

Manager for the Town of Vermilion, Dion Pollard said that with the reality of the four new doctors arriving in Vermilion, there is a need for more equipment.

“ We h ave n o t i c e d s o m e i n e f f i ciencies in terms of operations, and the need for additional equipment is greater than what we had initially anticipated in the 2016 budget,” said Pollard.

“Items such as examination tables, blood pressure monitoring machines and weigh scales are just a few of the items that are needed to ensure the doctors can perform their duties efficiently.

“We just want to make sure that the doctors have the equipment they need for their work. Some of our equipment is very old and dated so we will look at updating what we need to update,”

said Pollard.

Pollard said they would strive to recover the cost of the equipment in addition to the other costs incurred through monthly overheads, and include a capital replacement component within their monthly rates. “ We have another doctor, who is currently finishing their assessment at the moment, on the way. Hope fully, there will not be long wait times in Vermilion to see a doctor from now on,” added Pollard.

In another discussion, Council noted that they plan to organize a bigger event for Canada Day 2017 for Canada’s 150th birthday.

I h o p e yo u f o l k s had a safe and enjoyable Canada day and l o n g w e e ke n d . I ’m not sure how, but it seemed to flash by faster than a wink; even if it was a long weekend which is about the only bad thing I can say about it.

I got half the stuff done I wanted this weekend. However, it was mostly not the fun stuff, but it was all good.

I got the final hills on the potatoes in the garden and completely weeded, and it looked awesome. I say “looked” awesome because did you know after a dog goes swimming it has to run around flipping circles like its tail is on fire. I call it “Zoom Zoom”!

Well, after many hours of hard work …I just finished and was admiring my handy work, when Yup Miss Oohohh visited the duck pond for a swim and “Zo o m zo o m,” O h d i d I mentio n if there’s dir t or mud anywhere that ’s where “Zoom Zoom” happens?

Just so happens my nicely groomed garden is made entirely of dirt, “Zoom Zoom” she was burning laps through t h e g ar d e n at t h e s p e e d of m a c h chicken, as not funny as it was I was laughing too hard to scold her.

The wife sitting on her butt in the garden af ter the wake of a “zoom” knocked her back ward as she was admiring some greenery, was screaming obscenities. The dog traveling past

the speed of sound obviously couldn’t hear her, so she directed her objections towards me because I was laughing so hard and not slowing the pup down. We had to leave the garden area to reduce the carnage. Unfortunately, some greener y was harmed during this adventure; mostly the carrots and radishes. I have the potatoes hilled so high she would get high centered if she tried to run over them without jumping.

We wanted to take Miss Oohohh to the river for a real swim, but there were times during the weekend that I am sure the river fell on us, but we were better off than some as four tornadoes were confirmed on the long weekend here in the Midwest.

Although small by comparison to most that do damage, the fact they were around demanded caution and preparation. We have a tornado room as we call it, a small room off of the basement itself, even three ste ps lower than the basement floor. The tornado room is actually our water well and water supply tank, the room is completely enclosed in concrete including the ceiling, except for the solid door leading into the room. The room is big enough for cots to sleep in, and if debris covered the exit, there is a 50 gallon or better water tank with fresh water even if power was off, we have battery light incase of natural gas line breaks. We have a hand crank powered radio with weather channel and lantern, also food supplies for several days…one has to be prepared

for severe weather such as tornadoes.

Although most feel much safer than the famed tornado alley down in the lower states, most don’t realize that the Canadian Prairie Provinces are the top peak of that same tornado alley.

So it doesn’t take much to prepare a safe area preferably below ground, with enough supplies for 70 hours if need be, one can never be over cautious by preparing for severe weather or mother nature when she gets nasty. Replace or rotate stock every year, practise a drill also with family, we have had a white out hail storm with super winds that sent us scrambling to the Tornado room one year, a scary practise. I will, of course, have to take Miss Oohohh in with us as she has no basement in her kennel or doghouse, so that also has to be practised, so she gets used to it.

Although Miss Oohohh has no basement she has upstairs tenants quite regularly that will have to fend for themselves, it’s more like a huge birdcage on top of her doghouse. I finally got fed up with the magpies stealing all her and the farm kitty’s food faster than they could get a meal. At least half of the pet food was being consumed by the birds, and their numbers were growing. I built a huge live trap out of chicken wire; it’s the size of a small deep freeze with a wire funnel leading in on the bottom, food is placed inside, and the birds are willing to walk into the funnel.

the size of a coffee can lid, which they walked in and out of like a grocer y store, so I modified the small end down to the size of a large coffee cup.

I was surprised they would squeeze through that hole to get in, but still, many would walk back out soon as fed. However, they may have been the educated ones with the first larger entrance.

I also found that if I made a perch, a simple stick near the entire top of the cage, they after entering and feeding would fly up to the perch and not try to come down to bottom.

So now every day Miss Oohohh has her own personal bird cage with up to five magpies at a time, when we moved on the property I promised the wife no harm would come to any critter on or visiting the property.

S o e ve r y d ay w e l o a d u p m i s s Oohohh`s bird cage and go for a drive in the country to relocate the birds, its seems to be working and miss Oohohh loves the truck rides, our birds count at present is 42 birds, I suspect some may be re-offenders.

In my early memories, we had old fashioned ways of dealing with the sickness caused by the daily ex p o s u r e to t h e to the cold bitter weather and having to do chores and look after our stock, ‘Ch ore s’ an d walk in g to an d fro m school in the cold and often deep snow seemed we were always fighting colds and flues and sore and aching muscles and joints, as I remember not ver y pleasant to contend with and you were required to keep working and doing chores.

Yes, they had that, “Vicks Vapour Rub”, and you’d rub your neck and chest with that and pin a woolen sock around for luck, take a big swig of ‘Buckley’s Mixture,’ or ‘Mason’s 49’ and the cold had the message to leave.

Mom kept goose grease to rub on your chest too if you really had a chest cold, I don’t know what that did, but it

That Old Time Remedy Way

did make you smell bad. There wasn’t any antibiotics or such and you hardly ever got to miss school as I remember!!

The houses weren’t so warm in those times and were often a bit cold in bad weather. it wasn’t normal to keep the fire stoked all night, Coal was expensive so it was used sparingly too!! If your arms were sore from all the work and you needed some relief, ‘Absorbine’ liniment that was a horse liniment Dad found brought his aching muscles relief so he could sleep! We always had lots of what we considered at the time, good wholesome food, but it was not fresh produce, fruit and such. In those times there was a lot of canned, cured, pickled, dried or sauerkraut cabbage.

Good stuff but you wonder at all the salt we ate. Must have had an effect on our blood pressure. All the food at our little country store was capable of travelling a distance in cold and not be subject to freeze damage, like macaroni, cereals and bean things like that, so we ate a lot of high carbohydrate foods that did a lot of harm I feel. The only

reason that it didn’t cause the problem that manifest themselves now, is that in those early times, the hard labour that was required helped our bodies to burn more of the sugar.

Now days the fast food restaurants and grocer y stores are loaded with excessively high carbohydrate foods and the incidence of blood sugar problems and related health issues makes you wonder why there isn’t more done to try and get folks to realize the danger of such diets, in my own experience, even the hospitals are feeding diabetics high carbohydrate diets. That is a fact. In the five weeks I spent in the Glenrose the diabetic diet was high in carbs and I virtually starved to keep from having to eat them. The whole scheme of things was to eat anything at all and take whatever insulin and medication you needed to lower your sugar levels. My diet says if you don’t eat sugar or carbs, you don’t have it in your body to contend with. Simple, just don’t eat them!! I had their dietitian asking me why I didn’t eat their hospi-

tal diet, and they just didn’t see why. It wasn’t easy to resist, but in that same place I saw a good many men--ten or so that had one or both bottom ends of their legs gone!!

After I got mobile on a wheel chair, I’d go down to the lit tle confection store for the daily ‘Sun’ and I’d interview those men. Well, they’d say, “I got those sores on my legs from diabetes and then infection set in and they had to cut my legs off.” That was without exception. Now, you’d wonder if these people had the benefit of proper medical care how come that they’d have had to go through all that. Well, yes I had those same sores and had somehow managed to keep the infection away, but since I’ve been on this low-carb diet I haven’t had any sore like that.

I think of it every time I put my socks on. If an old cowboy can see the correlation, how come the people who are supposed to instruct us on healthy living haven’t caught on. Anyone can read the same book I did, it isn’t a secret rocket science at all!!

Library Renovation Gets The Green Light

C oun c il for t he Tow n of Ver mil ion approved the Vermilion Public Library basement renovation tender to Hammertime Construction with an additional $15,0 0 0.0 0 contingency c o m i n g fr o m Li br ar y C o nt i n g e n c y Reser ve at the Council meeting on July 5.

Manager for the Town of Vermilion, Dion Pollard said that the contingency would only be used if the construction project runs over budget.

In the 2016 budget, the Vermilion Public Library was slated for a renovation to the basement with specifics being carpet, lighting, washroom renovations and paint. The tender was introduced to the public, and two bids were received, one from Hammertime Construction and one from Legacy Builders.

Council reviewed the tenders and concluded that the tender from Hammertime Construction was in line with the specs the tender called for.

The budget for the initial project was

$85,000.00 with funds coming from CFEP Grant, the Town of Vermilion, and the Vermilion Public Library internal reserve.

The tender including the cost of the electrical design and engineering documents are expected to come in at approximately $88,273.00. “ If we were to b u i l d i n t h e 10 % contingency the expected total could increase to $97,073.50. The Board has eliminated some of the projects including furnishings, to save on costs and the Board will be searching for other options for cost savings but at this time

felt they wanted to move forward with the project at a budget of $97,073.50 + GST,” said Pollard.

To date, the Town of Vermilion has contributed $35,000.00 to the library renovations project.

“The current library basement has not been renovated since 1975. The renovations are due to commence on July 11 and are on target to be complete by September. We want to make the most out of the space that we have available in the basement,” said Vermilion Library Manager, Stuart Pauls.

Corn on the cob is a delicious part of sum m er. I re c ent ly bought some, and wondered if I could c ook it in the oven instead of the super sized pot of boiling water. I tried it out and it worked out great with easier clean up. What I liked about it is that all the nutrients remain in the corn and are not leached out into the cooking water. Unfortunately the other thing I wondered about is whether the corn was the genetically modified organism GMO variety.

Today 89 percent of field corn grown in the United States is GMO. Canada has approved the growing of GMO corn.

Currently there is no labeling requirement for GMO corn to be labeled.

We have been told that GMO crops were a solution to help feed the world.

This however has not been the case, as the problem in not with food supply, but rather with logistics. The World Health Organization has stated that poverty and lack of affordable transportation are part of the problem in getting the 1.3 billion tons of wasted food to those that are hungry. The secondary problem with GMO corn is that it is far inferior nutritionally to non GMO corn. According to nutri-

tional test results published by renowned health expert Dr. Mercola, regular corn for example contains 437 percent more calcium, 56 times more magnesium and seven times more manganese than GMO corn. He has also published results that show that that GMO corn contains 13 ppm of glyphosate, also known as Round-Up, but the safe limit by the American Environmental Protection Agency is. 7 ppm and organ damage in animals has been seen at.1 ppm.

This large amount of glyphosate found in chemical sprayed corn can kill the beneficial bacteria in our gut, increasing the risk of leaky gut and food allergies.

Dr. David Suzuki states “The safety of GMO foods is unproven and a growing body of research connects these foods with health concerns and environmental damage.”

Canad ian B i ote c hn o l o g y Ac t i o n Network (CBAN) is a Canadian watchdog for GMO corn in our supermarkets.

They randomly test Canadian supermarket corn and lobby our Canadian government. Through their work, there has been a decrease in GMO corn in our supermarkets. On their website, under resources, there is a simple form for consumers to fill out that goes straight to our Canadian Minister of Health requesting that our corn in supermarkets be non GMO. If you would like to be part of this

movement for healthier food, the few minutes it takes out to fill out your name and address on the form can mean a big difference to Canadian health. CBAN also urges consumers to write the head office of their supermarket and request that only non GMO corn be sold.

GMO corn is different from hybrid corn. Hybrid corn is bred for certain desirable traits, such as size, sweetness and days till maturit y. Hybrid corn of fers no known health risks.

GMO corn on the other hand is bred to produce its own insecticide, BT toxin.

This is done by splicing insect DNA or virus DNA in to the corn protein. This alteration to the protein DNA allows the corn it to be toxic to insects and to be chemically sprayed. The chemicals sprayed are typically 2-4D and glyphosate. But our Food and Drug administration would not let it on the market if it wasn’t safe, Right? Well not really, you see the problem is that the very same biotech companies that make the GMO seeds, also submit their own studies that show their results, and not independent research studies. It really is a case of following the money trail. Big business does not care about your health, my health or the health of young children. It really is all about the profits.

sprays. These same biotech companies that make the seed also sell the chemicals to spray on the crops. The biggest criticisms of GMO corn are for the safety of human health. This is because there are no clinical trials with humans, as the biotech firms believe such studies are “impractical” and they feel their GMO foods are presumed as safe. GMO corn is big business in the United States and there are many manufactured foods in our stores in which it is contained such as corn starch, corn meal, dextrose, cornflakes, corn syrup, corn oil, canned corn and many more.

Most of the corn products in our Canadian Grocery stores are products of USA. Also note that American pork is fed GMO corn and GMO soy, so always look for Canadian Pork.

Interestingly all popcorn seed is still natural and filled with nutrition. Thanks to the work of CBAN, and consumers letters to our Minister of Health we can usually still enjoy delicious non GMO corn on the cob from our supermarkets.

Oven Roasted Corn Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Peel the 6 or so outer leaves off the corn leaving about two layers still covering the corn. Break off any remaining stem and twist off the silk. Place in a metal cake pan or cookie sheet and roast at 350 degrees for 30-40 minutes.

Transition Through The Grief Journey

Continued from last month.

Last month we spoke of the Transition through the grief journey and how it includes taking responsibility to enter into the work of healing, regaining control of one’s life when the whole world seems out of control, begin the transition thinking to what life could look like, regaining confidence in one’s self to try again and the role changing that might mean.

Does one feel that these are tasks to accomplish right away? No, the grief journey is more lengthy and requires going through the pain of the journey but these are goals to look toward on the journey with support and giving one’s self permission to take the time needed for their healing.

REGAINING CONFIDENCE This month we look at Regaining Confidence. Self Esteem is at a low when one experiences a significant loss and to be able to make decisions and

accomplish new things is something to be pleased about and to congratulate self on. Perhaps a loved one was the best cheering section and now is gone.

Who will encourage and cheer for the grieving person now? If a relationship was one of a degrading nature it will be hard to build the self esteem until true information is received to build the grieving person up. Encourage self with positive affirmations.

ROLE CHANGING Role changing plays and important part in the healing journey. A spouse changes role when the husband or wife dies, an adult child loses the role of son or daughter when a parent dies, a parent loses the role of parent to a child who dies and when a sibling dies the loss of brother or sister is felt. In the case of divorce the loss and change or roles is much the same.

Think of job loss, also the change in who one sees themselves to be.

Embracing this change is a difficult process but when it occurs it is one step

in moving forward to the reconciliation of a new beginning in life, not as one knew it but a different life that can be fulfilling and enjoyed to when healing happens.

During the healing on the journey the physical symptoms will be that of a more renewed energy, stable sleeping patterns and stronger immune system.

One is then strong enough to begin to re enter life’s activities. Psychological repair is taking place, too and new ways are found to memorialize the loved one.

When one accomplishes this step each new day becomes precious and this is called HOPE. Sometimes it is hard to recognize as it has been missing for a long time.

Forgiveness is another component of the transition and is complex. Forgiving one’s self for being a survivor, or for investing in life again when a loved one is not there to share it, or forgiving the deceased for leaving and causing so much personal pain causing to face this transition of changes when it is totally unwanted or forgiving others whether or not they had a part to play in the loss that has been endured.

There is a time when letting go is mentioned and panic grips the heart that there should ever be a” good- bye “”letting go.” Trying to keep the loved one in the mind so as not to dishonour them.Letting

go is a natural phase and is about letting go of the pain not the person. Good–bye is not forgetting the loved one for ever but to remember the loved one in their absence and now have that loved one placed in memory, never to be lost but present in a warm way. There is permission for the season of suffering to pass.

The last part of transition is the word HOPE. Hope is the basic need for all humans. When the world has turned upside down and seems dark and the pain is intense, hope is lost to sight. When moving through grief and beginning the transition one is able to look back on memories and times that were happy and find they are more comforting than painful. One can look at their loved one more realistically as having positive and negative characteristics and embracing both.

When one is able to see their past life and accept it as it was with all that the relationship had been, when forgiveness is there and with hope that a new and meaningful life can be ahead with possibilities and challenges that can be met and with the support of those who seek to understand the pain and to companion on the journey, one will not be alone on this journey and will find healing, with a scar.

Thought – Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength while loving someone deeply gives you courage.

To promote the National Association of Canadian Equine Photography, a website (www.canadianequinephotographers.com) was launched on July 1.

The site is a resource for equine owners, publications, and businesses looking for a professional equine photographer; as well as, a place for those individuals to be educated about the specialized industry.

Local professional photographer, Nicole Templeton founded the association after noticing that Canadian equine photographers had to compete with international photographers to be published

in Canadian publications. Temple ton banded together a strong base of photographers and has notified publications across the nation of their existence.

“I’m really excited about it and I think it will be successful because in Canada horses are a big part of our culture and history, and I think that horses are often thought of by their owners as family,” said Templeton.

The association is recognizing a horses’ importance to their owners by showcasing the beautiful images being taken nationwide, and promoting the professional accomplishments of Canadian photographers.

Horses have helped build our nation, and have since been used and appreciated in a variety of ways including agriculture and equine sporting. The website offers an easy way for publications to seek out images for print, generate business for photographers, and aims to showcase an annual national competition for professional Canadian equine photography.

Images on the site include professional images focussed on horse shows, wild horses, and horse and rider portraits; thus giving associations, breeders or businesses access to photographers or images.

Templeton has published an equine posing book and her images have won international awards. The professionals often host clinics for amateurs as a way of growing their base for professionals in the future.

Templeton will be hosting professional photographers from Canada and the United States from September 16 – 18 for the ‘Believe in Your Dreams Equine Photography Workshop’.

Mixed Pastures And Bloat

When it comes to turning cows onto pastures that contain a mixture of legumes and grasses, there is always a risk of bloat.

“There needs to be a bit of planning before cows are actually turned out into these mixed pastures,” says Barry Yaremcio, beef/forage specialist, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, Stettler. “Feed the cows a mixture of alfalfa and grass hay for three or four days beforehand so the bacteria in the rumen adjusts to the alfalfa in the ration.

This way, when you turn the animals out into the pasture, there’s not that big a change in their diet.”

There are also a couple of products available that can help lower the risk of bloat.

“One is Bloat Guard, which is a powder mineral that can be put on pasture and that the cattle will eat free choice. There is also an additive for water called Alfasure you can get from a veterinarian that can work if the

cows only drink out of a tank that contains the Alfasure.”

Yaremcio suggests turning cattle out in mid-afternoon when they are full. “The biggest meal of the day is first thing in the morning. Wet plants, especially alfalfa, increase the risk of bloat. If you turn the cows out at 2 p.m., they will have a smaller meal and the plants are drier.”

When cows do get a sore stomach, they look for something to reduce the discomfort. “You can put out a bale of straw in a round bale feeder and leave it. They will eat a pound or two and this will reduce the chances of them bloating.”

The biggest risk of bloat come in the first two to five days after the cows have been turned out onto pasture, or after there has been a significant rainfall. “You always have to be vigilant and watch the animals, to make sure you don’t run into a problem.”

Bounce, Paintballs And Vintage Autos At Mannville Canada Day

The crowds were down a little due to the wet weather at Mannville Canada Day 2016, but it was still a good day out for those who attended.

The Gazebo on Main Street buzzed with life early on Friday morning, July 1, as young and old members of the community gathered to celebrate Canada’s 149th birthday.

The day started with a Chamber of Commerce pancake breakfast, followed by opening ceremonies, the national anthem,

and cake.

Despite the CF-18 Hornet Fighter Jets from Cold Lake being an hour and a half late this year, they didn’t fail to surprise and thrill when they swooped low and roared across the sky over the Gazebo on Main Street at 11:30 a.m.

Children enjoyed the bouncy castle and entertainment on Main Street with Miss Jenn and Family Scavenger Hunt, while the adults admired the wide variety of classic vintage cars at the Village’s first annual Show and Shine.

Canada Day In Myrnam

It was a quiet day in Myrnam as Canada celebrated its 149th birthday.

People came from within the small village while some others came from outside to partake in the hotdogs, cake and ice cream. Good company and friendly faces all met at the Dove Park

and later in the Seniors Centre. As the flag was slowly raised and the eternal anthem was sung by all who gathered, Mayor Ed Sosnowski said a few words of gratitude which were followed by a prayer by Pastor Gary Dupuis.

“We are so fortunate to be living in one of the greatest countries in our world, our Canada. We should be thankful for

our four fathers who worked and fought so hard for all the privileges that we now enjoy, and we should continue to ask God to watch over and guide all those that serve us now and in the future. Upcoming Bike Rally And Memorial Park Opening

The community of Two Hills recently won the title of Canada’s Most Rider Friendly Community, beating out Moncton, NB in the final, Kaslo, BC in the semi final, and over 60 other great Canadian communities in the elimination rounds.

The community has built a strong

grass roots following in the motorcycling community. This is largely in part to the annual Run to the Hills Memorial Rally, and the Wayside Fallen Riders Memorial Park. This park has been the goal of the Run to the Hills organizers since the humble beginnings of their event nine years ago.

The Wayside Fallen Riders Memorial Park will be officially opening on July 16th during the annual rally, and The Last Ride Monument will be unveiled during the 10th annual in 2017. The park has a

Chapel that can be booked for services, outdoor bathrooms (one wheel chair accessible), picnic tables, community fire pit and tenting sites for motorcyclists.

The Town of Two Hills has officially proclaimed the week of July 10 - 16 Rider Friendly Week in Two Hills.

The rally will be held in Two Hills from July 15 – 17. The traditional ‘Jack Daniel’s Meat and Greet Pig Roast’ will kick off Friday evening, followed by beer gardens featuring ‘Tony Poirier ’ and ‘Northern Comfort’. Saturday is the main event

with a show n’ shine, memorial service, poker run, bike rodeo, mini - bike races, stunt rider Justin King, vintage car show, dunk tank, vendors, and beer gardens featuring persons of interest and ‘Tom Hammered’. A week-end pass (including camping) costs $50 per person, and there is a $30 day pass available Saturday only.

Mural Project Underway Creating a flashy flower scene on The Bargain Store’s West wall is Professional Mural Artist, Barry Overn. His previous work having enhanced the community, Vermilion welcomed Overn back to commence working on a fifth Mural Project on July 8.

Eastalta Co-op owns the building in which The Bargain Store is located, and Eastalta Co-op Community and Member Engagement Marketing Coordinator Jillian Dumais presented a cheque for $4,410 to Keri Pullyblank, Chair of the Vermilion Mural Project on July 8.

“We’re excited to be a part of it, and look forward to seeing the finished product,” said Dumais.

“We would like to extend a big thank you to Eastalta Co-op for their donation,” said Pullyblank.

TWO HILLS, ALBERTA – Shannon Stubbs, Member of Parliament for Lakeland and Deputy Critic for Natural Resources, attended Canada Day festivities in Bruderheim and Vegreville last week.

M.P. Stubbs was pleased to join the residents of Bruderheim in the Canada Day Parade, where she handed out frisbees and treats for kids young and old. From Bruderheim, she travelled to Vegreville to take part in the 43rd Annual Pysanka Festival Grandstands, hosted by the Vegreville Cultural Association.

“ On Canada Day, we celebrated our rich and diverse Canadian history from coast-to-coast-to-coast, and we also celebrated our vibrant Ukrainian community,” said M.P. Stubbs.

This year marks the 125th anni versar y of Ukrainian immigration to Canada. In 1891, the first Ukrainians came to Canada to seek a better life for their families. By 1914, approximately170,000 Ukrainians had entered Canada, and about 20 to 25 percent of the Ukrainian-Canadian population was in Alberta.

Perfect Season!!!

The Vermilion Bantam Reds Baseball Team beat Lac La Biche 9 – 8 on June 29, making them the Lakeland League Champions. Although this is impressive, perhaps more glorifying is that with this same game, they achieved a 17 – 0 undefeated season.

They had a 9 – 0 record in league play, a 5 – 0 record between two tournaments, and won all three playoff games.

“It’s very rare to have an undefeated season for sure. We had a lot of highly skilled players including six that could pitch. We had a different hero every game with each player stepping up during different plays. There were also three peewee players called up to play with the Bantam team this year, so hopefully we can keep the greatness going into next year,” said Coach Allan Chase.

U16 D Provincial Gold Medal Winners this year were the Bonnyville Angels. Trista Minish and Andrea Zielinski from Vermilion joined the Bonnyville team to play in the provincial tournament in Leduc on July 1-3. They finished first in their round robin pool, and went onto win Gold in U16 D Provincial Softball.

Chuckwagons tore up the track in Onion Lake from June 29 - July 3. The last night was rained out, so competitors had one less time to average their scores.

Reigning Cow Horse Competition

Reig ning hor sem en an d wo m en filled the Lakeland College Arena on July 9 and 10 to compete in the Northern Alberta Reigning Cow Horse Club (NARCHC) Show. The show was the third of six in its series, and drew riders of all ages from Nor th East Alber ta and North West Saskatchewan.

Cutting classes were held for competitors to cut any three cows out of a herd and box them at the other end of the ring within two minutes and

30 seconds.

Working cow horse classes were held where competitors entered the ring singly and followed a pat tern picked out by judges until a single cow is sent into the arena where the reigning rider boxed it at one end, pushed it to the other end and back, and circled the cow each way.

Each step up boxing entry is judged on boxing, run and rate, position and control, degree of difficulty, eye appeal and courage and working time.

before you figure out how to do it right,” said Jocelyn Williams, President of the NARCHC from Lac La Biche.

“You have to pay your dues in this sport. There are a lot of factors making it possible to not work out, but when it all works out, you get a pretty good feeling,” said Ryan McLaughlin from Whitecour t who has been competing for seven years, and is now on the board.

“I support it because the beginner classes allow new riders to learn the sport without having to put out a whole lot off the bat.”

The turn back help coached the ‘green as grass’ class during their runs as they were either new to the sport or their horses were new to the show ring. Fellow competitors cheered one another on from the sidelines as extra encouragement and showing that Cow Horse Reigning is both a friendly and competitive sport.

Newest Local Feathered Friends

In the last couple of years local rural residents have noticed ring-necked doves on their property, and though they scavenge bits of grain, they are in no hurry to shoo them away. They are a mild source of entertainment as they are known to make a lovely cooing sound.

They look a fair bit like a pigeon but are slightly smaller and more slender.

Nests are made in trees 2 - 10 meters above ground, or borrowed from other s p e c i e s. B ar n ow l s an d s q uir re l s can raid their nests, but our region

has less large prey for them to worry about. Depending on camouflage for self defence, they seem to be surviving here just fine, but it is unknown whether they winter here or migrate further south during the colder months.

Ring-necked doves can to lay 2 - 4 white eggs up to five times in a season; and once the eggs hatch, the baby doves can learn to fly within approximately 16 days.

With these statistics, we may start to see more of these gentle cooing feathered friends around. Keep your eyes and ears peeled with bird watching season in full swing.
