The 63 rd Wainwright Stampede was fast and furious again this year. Rodeo Week breakfasts and lunches were held throughout the week at various businesses with some giving proceeds to local charities; as well there was a BBQ supper hosted by Wainwright Liquor & Cold Beer with proceeds to the Food Bank.

The “Wainwright Stampede Kick – Off” in downtown Wainwright on June 22 kicked off the stampede with lots of family fun including children’s games, activities and entertainment.

There was also a BBQ Beef on a Bun, dance performances, face painting and much more.

On June 23 the 28 th Annual Bench Fair and Craft Vendors was held at the Elks Hall.

Thursday night, June 23 saw the Grand Entry with the Wainwright Stampede Riders to open

things up for the CPCA Chuckwagon Races and the CPRA Rodeo followed.

The action was fast paced again on Friday night as the Chuckwagon Races fought for the best time with no penalties.

The Cowboys and Cowgirls did their best in all the rodeo performances.

Saturday’s events star ted with the Parade with the theme, “Pulling Together”, hosted by the Wainwright Frontier & Exhibition Agricultural Society. This wa s fo ll owe d by t wo r o d e o performances, the first at 1 p.m. and then again at 9 p.m. titled “Rodeo Under the Lights”.

Sunday, June 26th held the last event “Battle for the Buckles Finals”.

Vermilion’s new doctors have arrived after successfully completing their assessments. The doctors have each committed to four year contracts in Vermilion.

Dr. Yuma Salumu, who is originally from Congo in Central Africa, moved to Canada last December from South Africa, where he studied and worked for many years.

Dr. Salumu says he is still concerned about the cold Canadian winters. “When I came to Vermilion last Decem-

ber to do my observership, I found it really cold coming from South Africa; where there was a drought happening at the time. Everyone here was telling me that this was a mild winter for them,� said Dr. Salumu.

However, Dr. Salumu says he feels at home here so far and that he is looking forward to his wife and two daughters joining him soon. “I find the Canadian people very welcoming. Generally speaking medicine around the world is the same, although some medical conditions that are quite frequent in South Africa, we don’t see them here. Another difference is that medical records here are electronic whereas in South Africa most medical notes are done by hand,� said Dr. Salumu.

Dr. Ali Alshalchi, who is originally from Iraq, says he was drawn to Vermilion by the small town feel. Dr. Alshalchi grew up in Iraq until 1998, when he left for Libya before moving to Canada in 2010.

“Most people only know the dark side of Iraq, but it was a great place before that. After the 1980s, the war got a lot worse. I think the war has changed the people because of the hard situation that they have suffered,� said Dr. Alshalchi. “I left Iraq to go to Libya because it was more stable at the time. My family moved to Canada in 2010, where we lived in Toronto,� said Dr. Alshalchi. “I have lots of friends working in Alberta and they say it’s a good place. I prefer the small town feel better than the big city because it’s friendlier and you get to know people on a more personal level.�

Dr. Alshalchi says his wife and daughter will be joining him soon.

Manager for the Town of Vermilion, Dion Pollard, who is on the Physician Committee board with Alberta Health Services, said last week that Dr. Frans Kruger will not be starting until July 4.

Vermilion Mayor, Bruce MacDuff said that Vermilion is very glad to have the new doctors.

“It is a result of the hard work by the recruiting people to bring them here and we are really glad to have them. Alberta Health Services says the quota for a town of this size and its surrounding communities should be 9-10 doctors,� said Mayor MacDuff. “All of the new doctors will be working out of our clinic Midtown Medical Clinic. It takes a lot of pressure off the doctors that are already there and on call dealing with roughly 12,000 people. We are also putting the plans in place to bring a fourth doctor to Vermilion.�

by Bob Bezpalko, Executive Director of Alberta HUB on June 23.

Alberta HUB is a regional economic development program encouraging chambers in the region to think about the larger international trade routes that our roadways coincide with; along with other development projects and market trends.

Bezpalko was raised locally having c om pleted s c ho ol in Der went and Myrnam. He returned to the region years later to raise a family, and in his current position has collected statistics for Northeastern Alberta to be able to support communities in their effort to work together and operate as a region by making suggestions to pool resources. “Regional is the new local,� said Bezpalko.

The Vermilion Chamber was reminded that we are in a global economy being that we have the resources of HWY 16 reaching Asian markets, HWY 41 reaching American and Mexican markets along with railroad and airport facilities. “Alberta HUB is advocating getting the Wild Horse Border Crossing open more hours per day and doing market research as this region has an ideal climate for growing hemp. We don’t want to see more products shipped away for process-

ing,� said Bezpalko.

Bezpalko added that Alberta HUB is working on a project to get broadband federated in the region like they did with power and gas to encourage new business in the area. “’We do it this way because we’ve always done it this way’ creates a poor outlook. If we work as one region, for example, we can promote shopping locally online, or help a southern Alberta region repair their roads because our trucks travel on those roads as well.

The new adaptation of The Jungle Book movie will screen outside under the stars in the Vermilion Provincial Park on June 30.

The Disney film was released in Canada on April 15, and is a movie about Mowgli’s adventures that is suitable for both young and old.

Fountain Tire, who is celebrating their 60th anniversary, is one of the major sponsors of the outdoor movie night, along with the Town of Vermilion and Enbridge.

“To help celebrate this achievement, Fountain Tire is hosting a free nationwide Drive-In Movie Tour across Canada,” said

Town Council “Chickens Out!!”

Council for the Town of Vermilion declined a motion to approve changing the Animal Control By-Law allowing chickens to be kept within the Town limits on June 21.

Despite 55.5% voting yes and 49.5% voting no in the online Urban Chicken Survey, Council decided that these results were not posit i ve e n o u g h to warrant a change in the current Animal Control By-Law, which prohibits keeping chickens within the Town limits.

“The concept might seem like a good idea but the reality is different,” said Community Services Director, Sean Bell.

“We are a rural community, close to local food production, and I think the best way to go is to support our local farmers by buying their products. There are lots of things that people don’t know about chickens. Animals escaping are always a problem and chickens escaping would be a problem especially if they are free range,” said Bell.

“We need to ask ourselves the question; if we are okay with people raising chickens in their backyard, are we also okay with

them slaughtering them in their back yard?

Because that is what people are raising them for! They are not pets,” added Bell.

“We would need to consider the number of chickens that we would allow per household,” said Vermilion Mayor, Bruce MacDuff.

“Three chickens would not smell, but 100 would. It could upset the n e i g h b o r s ,” added Mayor MacDuff. “ T h ere i s still a lot we do not know about chickens and there i s a l o t to b e considered. We need to have rules.

Mannville, New York City, Edmonton and Calgary may have chickens but we need to get more information.

“Each chicken would need to wear a band on their leg so that it could be identified if we found a Photo supplied carcass. Would we say that the chickens would be free range or that they had to be kept in coop?” added MacDuff.

Farewell Celebration For Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Connection

The Vermilion Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Connection, which has been in existence for 33 years, celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Stonecroft at the VES School in Vermilion on June 22.

Many long time members of the group gathered and mingled while enjoying a salad supper. The women reminisced times gone by and talked about what the future holds for Stonecroft. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the end of an era for the Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Connection Canada wide,â&#x20AC;? said the speaker for the evening, Lorraine Myrholm.

The Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Connection group is under the umbrella of Stonecroft Canada. Stonecroft is a national Christian charity that supports the efforts of Christian women. The Vermilion Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Connection group has been in existence since it was founded in 1983. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When the group first started it was a chance for women who were stay-at-home mothers to get out of the house and make new friendships with other women,â&#x20AC;? said Myrholm.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Most women were stay at home moms 50 years ago, so they had free time. Women today have careers and after work they have to drive their children to extracurricular activities,â&#x20AC;? said Myrholm. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Times have changed and we have moved forward with new ways to bring women together. A film series will be available now for women to download on their phones or groups can get together to watch and discuss the films together,â&#x20AC;? said Myrholm.

We all need relationships; we were all created for relationships, including a relationship with God. This is the part that hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t changed, its how we expressed it that has changed.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I will be speaking to the women tonight about our theme â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Celebrating The Lightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and about how the light of the presence of God has been in my life,â&#x20AC;? said Myrholm. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We invite women into a relationship with God through Jesus, inspire hope, growth and passionate living, and provide opportunities to invest generously in the lives of others.â&#x20AC;?

Stonecroft Canada reached out to women across the country for five decades through Christian Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Clubs, Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Connections, After Five, Bible study groups, prayer groups and ministries serving moms, working women and anyone with a desire to explore faith and Scripture. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Many of the women here tonight have been involved with the group for many years,â&#x20AC;? said the Vermilion Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s

Connection organizer, June Bachmann. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are not totally shutting down; we are shifting direction and going more the video discussion route. I think we have to look at what we can do to adapt using social media and look to the future,â&#x20AC;? said Bachmann.

School is out this week, and the children are going to be running full thrott l e ove r t h e n ex t couple of months while they enjoy the much-needed downtime from the vigorous schedules they hold during the school year. And one of the ways they can enjoy themselves is Canada Day festivities!

This Thursday (June 30), Vermilion will be holding their Canada Day celebrations instead of on the traditional day of July 1; while the Village of

Mannville will be holding their Canada Day celebrations on July 1.

A few things to remember as you head out to enjoy the festivities with your families and possibly your pets is the heat!!

Right now it looks like possible rain on June 30 for the Vermilion Canada D ay c e l e b r at i o n s a n d s u n fo r t h e Village of Mannville celebrations on July 1, but we all know how quickly that can change here in Alberta. Make sure you carry your sunscreen to avoid some serious burns.

Wear light coloured clothes to help reflect the sun’s heat, a hat to help avoid sunstroke and bring plenty of

water to help keep yourself, family and pets hydrated as you run from event to event.

If you should happen to bring along your family dog, please remember to bring along your poop bags. No one wants to be maneuvering dog droppings while attending events, plus it’s highly unsanitary for our towns. Also, remember not to keep your pet, children or elderly in the car even for a shor t amount of time while out and about unless you can keep your car running with the air conditioning on.

So let’s get out there and have fun!! As a side note, our National Anthem is supposed to be changing; but I look at it this way, I’m going to be singing in the old version not the new, the heck with political correctness!!

Well, folks, the first day of summer is officially here. The first day of summer was June 20, 2016, and is also known as the summer solstice, the longest day of sunlight for the year. For the sun worshippers, we can enjoy 17 hours of sunlight today so it could be a long day for those who are up at sunrise and work until sunset. Now that it is summer we should get out there and enjoy it.

Last Sunday was Father’s Day, so it was a relaxing day. Saturday I cut grass for eight plus hours; I’m sure I could have driven to Edmonton on that riding lawnmower in that time.It wasn’t the best way to enjoy the outdoors, but the yard and outdoor archery Range sure looks so nice. This morning was a beautiful sunrise, and as I took the pup for a walk, the robins were singing, and the place never looked better. I may have a super garden this year; all the work with

manure and being so late may pay off, in less than a week I had potatoes, corn and radishes up, the corn already two inches high and in a week I will be hilling potatoes. Again all worth it, in the end, I can’t wait to get into the radishes, and, the tasty potatoes in a month or so; if we continue with the equal sun and rain things will be even that much lusher.

The 2016 hunting draw deadline is noon on Thursday, June 23, you will have up to then to put in your draws or edit them if you wish, then it’s a long wait until July 12, 2016, to get our results.

Some draws such as Antelope and Bighorn sheep are getting to be like a once in a lifetime draw, the numbers of applicants combined with a few bad winters have declined the Antelope numbers. Some of these draws are taking a dozen years to be successful, and may even take longer as more applicants apply; I can foresee 20 to 25 years for draws such as Bighorn sheep.

I remember as a youth when I started bow hunting; there was a bow hunting only zone in Canmore next to Banff. Tags

for Bighorn sheep were bought over the counter, and we bow hunted there a lot for elk. I remember shooing Bighorns away from the truck as they licked road salt off, they would slobber up the entire truck; we used to shoo them off the trails on the mountains chasing elk around.

Now an Alberta Bighorn sheep tag is gold, in fact, some have paid over a million dollars just for the opportunity; the good news is that money goes back into conservation and habitat efforts benefiting our Bighorn sheep.

I may have a few years left to run up and down the mountains but soon my years of wisdom will catch up to me. I guess that’s what they call getting old now, funny I don’t feel any wiser.

Although the opportunity for Bighorn sheep would be an adventure of a lifetime nowadays, I am more interesting in filling the freezer with table fare, and I am happy with a moose or an elk. Even moose nowadays which are also on the draw in Alberta can take a half- dozen years or more in some areas, making the adventure and excitement that much more if one draws a tag. So many sit on pins and needles as the seasons approach, I wish our draws were earlier in the year as some of these adventures will take much planning and preparation just on a months’ notice. I have already been out scouting, moose, elk, and deer and they are already growing their antlers they shed in winter, some growing an inch bigger each day, and some elk are already impressive.

My pup Miss Oohohh loves the scouting adventures. When she was younger, I almost had to hog- tie her to get in a vehicle; now I can’t keep her out of a vehicle.

Truth be known, most of the scouting trips is just an excuse for taking her for a “ride,” she loves the window half down and her nose to the wind, she also gets excited when we watch moose or deer in our area. She likes the scenery and is always trying to take everything in; I think she would make a great hunting partner although it’s illegal to be accompanied by a dog while big game hunting, something many are fighting to change as we speak.

Many would like it to be legal to use pack dogs to retrieve successful hunts, which I agree with. As a youngster in Alberta, I brought out several moose on a hood of a truck for a sled and seven dogs pulling.

Back in those days off- highway vehicles were standard pickups, it worked well the truck hood pulled across the muskeg swamps perfectly, and the dogs loved the adventure.

I think the law should be re-written to state that dogs can be used only in the act of retrieval, sled or pack, however not change any existing laws where dogs may be used, hunting birds, etc.

Some would like it to be legal for the dogs to pack in and out on high mountain adventures, which sounds reasonable, as they are also great companions.

I guess it depends on your state of life how you would view your freedom. A jail bird convict, for instance, has a different idea of freedom, then say someone who is under the iron thumb of a dictator, or just a tax paying free citizen of a democratic country. My contention is though that freedom by degrees isn’t all that free. When you work half of your time and its summarily just taxed away, you’re only half free you think?

I once heard it said that freedom is like being pregnant, you either are or you aren’t!! Through the ages, the struggle to be free and have an equal say has been the reason for war almost since time began to be recorded. In this continent the earliest people who lived here were as free as the wind that blows across the fields and was not bound to anything but the whims that had them travelling endlessly with no

fixed address, their abodes were made to suit their lifestyle. Can you imagine the feeling of loss when that way of life was lost, and they were required to be rooted in one spot? They had at one time had the run of miles of country, now their lives were not free you think?

Let’s see now, in the United States, they were growing cotton and farming in such a way that was labour intensive.

Well, its hot down there, and the idea was they needed folks who could do the hard work cheaply and survive.

Hence they sent people over to Africa to capture slaves who had to work for nothing but their keep. Yes, they were enslaved, their freedom lost, and many were high ranking people in their native country. Think of how being loaded up and taken across the wide sea and many never survived the ordeal. This went on for years, and the Civil War of U.S.A really was about freeing them, yes, freedom is something we don’t realize the value of until we’ve lost it!!

But suppose you lived in slavery and got

so used to it had no idea how to live on their own once freed. That happened to so many of the freed slaves who then lived wretched lives because they had no idea what to do with their suddenly becoming free. Not good either, so now then the Declaration of Independence in early U.S.A. was caused because, the British king decided to raise the tax on tea, and in this time of taxes like very little, but those freedom-seeking Americans threw the tea overboard into the sea as they thought they were being taxed and had no say how they were governed. So they got rid of that means of taxing. I’m wondering what would have to happen to get our country back to a more realistic system that makes government more responsible. Ever hear the phrase “a governments ability to tax is not equalled by people’s ability to pay,” Think about that for a little!!

I wonder how it would be if we had a government that truly had the peoples best interest at heart and lived within a budget that reflected the economy of its

hard working people instead of having these entitlements added that somehow run the country into terrible debts and encourage higher taxes to try and stay afloat and pay them back!!

To many of us a million dollars is a mountain peak we’re likely never to manage to climb, well now our leaders are talking in billions of debt and just paying the interest on these loans takes an ever growing part of those taxes we’re obligated to pay, monies that could be used in many more useful pursuits!!

Another great man had the idea that ‘No government ever taxed its way into prosperity.” Quite the reverse is true, though. High taxes dry up investment and the folks that know better try to find a climate that’s more favourable to investors as we’ll find to our sorrow! We are living in very challenging times, and we do need folks who can manage money and finances to manage our county and not make us slaves to taxes, yes taxes that benefit the country and not just the ones who make the rules.

Apple Celery Salad

Canada Day weekend is coming up whic h means cele brating with community picnics, camping, ball tournaments or outdoor barbeques with family or friends.

On the prairies, any excuse to soak up some sunshine or do some socializing is welcome. It is usually when we have our first home made potatoes salad. I love salads in the summer, and I love to serve perennial favorites like potato salad with something new and interesting. I am loving this apple celery salad with a Maple Honey Mustard dressing. It tastes so good and it is super healthy. Celery contains at least twelve different antioxidants that have shown to protect our cells, blood vessels and organs. Celery

is also anti- inflammatory, calming to the nervous system and hormone balancing. Celery is protective of the digestive system, and may help protect that system from the damaging but flavorful compounds found on barbequed meat.

Other foods that contain nutrients that are cell protective from grilled meat carcinogens are honey, apple and parsley. I bet a little chopped parsley in this salad could easily be added. Just have some celery salad before you bite into your juicy burger, steak or hot dog from the barbie.

You could also serve a pasta salad that is dressed with a parsley pesto. (Recipe in a previous issue of the Vermilion Voice) Apples are another great source of antioxidants and nutrients, and walnuts are a good source of omega 3. Apple Celery Salad 3 cups chopped celery 3 small apples chopped 1 tablespoon of chopped onion 1/3 cup chopped walnuts Maple Honey Mustard Dressing 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 2 Tablespoons olive oil 1 Tablespoon honey 1 Tablespoon Maple Syrup 1 teaspoon Dijion mustard 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper In a bowl combine the celery, apple, onion and walnuts. In a small bowl or glass combine the lemon juice, olive oil, honey, maple syrup, mustard, salt and pepper.

Stir until well blended. Pour dressing over the salad and stir to combine. Serve. This salad will keep well for 24 hours refrigerated.

Under dark clouds and the threat of rain, Paradise Valley & District Ag Societ y held their three day action packed 44th Annual 3 Cities Fair and 14th Annual Bull-A-Rama from June 24 to 26.

On Friday, a pancake breakfast at

the Fire Hall on main street kicked off the day’s round of events. At 6 p.m. town residents and visitors had the oppor tunity to socialize in the beer gardens before moving on to watch bull riding at the Bull-A-Rama that started at 7 p.m.

Family Run Cheesery Shares Passion For Cheese Making

A n ew ar t i s a n c h e e s er y c a l l e d ‘The Old School Cheeser y’ will be o p e n i n g s o o n s o u t h of Ver m ili o n on the Buf falo Coulee Road, on a small acreage beside Buffalo Coulee community hall.

The man behind the venture is Patrick Dupuis. Originally from Quebec, Dupuis moved out west to live the country life in Alberta.

A f te r r e t i r i n g f r o m t h e m i l i t a r y Dupuis says he was looking for something to do.

“When I was in Afghanistan for a year with the military, I began thinking about what I should do when I retire. My wife suggested to me, “why don’t you make cheese… you like cheese!” So I did,” he laughs.

“I am very excited about the new challenge. I have read a lot and taken courses at Nor thern Alber ta Institute of Technology studying cheese making and I find it very interesting.”

Dupuis says he believes that the business will have a unique advantage in this region due to the fact that there are very few cheeseries in Alberta, unlike Quebec, “where there is a cheesery in every village.”

“Cheese making is something that is not really common here and we want to bring this here, producing fresh local produce and share our interest in cheese, like we have back east.”

Dupuis purchased the cheese making equipment off Rhona Headon who closed her cheeser y located outside Kitscoty earlier this year. “ I will be purc hasing the c ow ’s milk from Alber ta Milk to make the cheese curds. My goal is to get the cow’s milk from Vermilion to support our local dair y producers. We will

be buying goats this year and milking them to make our own Brie and Chevre cheese,” said Dupuis. “ We ar e fo c u s e d o n p r o d u c i n g fresh cheese; in the morning the milk will be coming from the cows and in the evening you can eat it fresh, nothing like cheese that has been on the shelf for two or three weeks,” said Dupuis.

It will be a family run business with Patrick’s daughter, Valérie working as the cheesery manager.

Valérie is a Lakeland College graduate in Animal Health Technology and Animal Science Technology.

“She will take care of our animal’s welfare, maintain the pasture, milk the goats and will also be involved in the cheese making process.”

Fresh production will begin in July and the first batch of cheese is scheduled to be ready in mid-July. The Old School Cheesery will have a booth at the Vermilion Fair showcasing a variety of fresh cheeses.

The new cheesery will be located just on a 9 acres’ lot well divided with a beautiful red barn and a Quonset transformed into the cheesery.

Habitat for Humanity supporters, enjoy the sunshine at the BBQ outside Christina’s Home Furnishings on June 21. “It was a great BBQ day,” which featured burgers, hot dogs and taco salad, said Habitat for Humanity Chair, Linda Jacejko. “We had four volunteers from Western Financial. The Rotary dollars we received paid for the supplies and Eastalta Co-op’s donation of the BBQ and propane helped us get a profit of $844 to go towards the end of the build bills,” explained Jacejko.

“In spite of the weather, a lot of hamburgers and hot dogs were sold on June 17 at the Co-op post construction event. The Triathlon on June 19 also netted some cash,wsome supplies and a donation. Rock Solid Triathlon

Competitors geared up a day ahead of time to get their bike and helmet checks done, and familiarize themselves with the course for the 4th Annual Rock Solid Triathlon. On June 19, athletes aged 5 – 60 swam at the Lakeland College Pool, and biked and ran in and around Vermilion.

The race was improved this year with timing chips that gave approved results to the Alberta Triathlon Association and the weather was fabulous.

“Numbers were lower this year with Summer Games qualifiers in Calgary at the same time, but we still had 57 participants. In a rural community, it is a great way to add more opportunity for children in the region,” said Race Director, Rebecca McCullough.

The Rock Solid Triathlon in Vermilion was also a qualifier for the Alberta Summer Games in the 12-13 and 14-15 age categories. The Alberta Summer Games will be held in Leduc on July 14–17 with the triathlon events being held on July 16 and 17. “ This is the first year that the Summer Games will be draft legal; meaning that competitors may use a guide’s efforts during the triathlon to their advantage, making for a more exciting race,” said Alberta Triathlon Association General Manager, Calli Stromner.

Steven Chwok will be inducted into the CFCW & Vegreville Cultural Association’s Ukrainian Music Hall of Honour on Friday July 1st, at the 2 p.m. grandstand.

Five grandstand performances will include accomplished musicians and dance groups coming from Manitoba, the U.S.A. and the Ukraine. The grandstand shows are $25 each, with the exception of the opening grandstand which is $15 admission. There will also be several other talent performances displaying the Ukrainian culture throughout the weekend.

Liberal Delays Causing Investor Uncertainty And Impacting Job Growth

Alberta lost another 24,000 jobs in May, increasing the unemployment rate to 7.9%, the highest it has been in 20 years.

Now, when the industry needs support, while people are losing their jobs and businesses are failing, the Liberal government’s solution is to introduce a carbon tax.

The Minister of Environment and Climate Change Catherine McKenna has said “It is time for the Conservatives to get with the program,” but Conservatives do not support initiatives that hurt businesses and Canadian families. We certainly will not rubber stamp programs that have not even been introduced, just to placate Liberal ministers.

Rumbolt 3rd In ISA Prairie Tree Climbing Competition

June 18 and 19 saw the return of the annual Prairie Chapter tree climbing competition (PCTCC) in Olds, AB hosted by Olds College. Lloyd Rumbolt, a resident arborist of Vermilion, took third place in the twoday event. Rumbolt is the owner/operator of a professional tree service company called “Lloyd’s Limb Service Inc.” based in Vermilion.

The event is organized by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), a 90-year-old organization that promotes the professional practice of arboriculture and fosters a greater worldwide awareness of the benefits of trees.

cally chosen to set up the challenges. The competitors access the trees with specialized gear including ropes and other fall arrest equipment the same as they would use in the day to day operations. Competitors rely on their equipment to aid them in moving throughout the trees canopies to different stations and complete a work simulated task.

Points are accumulated for completing tasks in a pre-determined amount of time, speed, safety, and efficiency.

ISA organizers were happy to have had the highest number of competitors in the history of the chapter! 37 competitors including 9 in the women’s division, all started out on Saturday morning to complete five separate challenges. The Work Climb, Throwline, Belayed Speed Climb, Footlock and Aerial Rescue are the preliminary competitions.

The goal for these industrial athletes is to score in the top four of preliminary rounds and earn a spot in the Sunday event called “The Masters Challenge.” The Masters Challenge opens up the stage for a little more creative display of skills to wow the judges and spectators.

Prizes are awarded to each event and overall winners from industry sponsors. First place bounty includes the opportunity to represent the Prairie Chapter on the International stage, next to be held in Washington, DC. Lloyd has competed in regional events 12-15 times and three times at internationals.

Competitors, as well as other chapter members and volunteers, share a strong passion to learn and hone their skills making the competition a fun way to learn from each other and promote the professionalism of their industry.

The 2017 PCTCC will be held in Saskatchewan as the event rotates through the provinces, with many climbers already eager to take another shot at the championship title.

The County of Two Hills # 21 Agricultural Service Board has started their Roadside Spraying Program along Municipal Roads, as required, to control the spread of weeds and brush.

Landowners who do not want the ditches adjacent to their property sprayed can sign an Annual “No Spray Agreement” stating that you accept responsibility for the control of weeds in the ditch along your property and No Spray Signs can be issued to you. It will be your responsibility to ensure the No Spray Signs are in place and clearly visible during the entire County Spraying season.

If you fail to control these weeds, the County may control them by whatever means they consider appropriate.

The Kitscoty 4-H Beef Club held our achievement day on June 4 at the Kitscoty Arena. We had a very busy and successful day that showcased all the hard work the members have done with their beef projects over the year. We began our show with a judging class for all members including the Cleaver Kids. Judge Greg Krupka demonstrated what he looks for in a finished beef steer and then the kids judged a group of four steers.

First, we had the Cleaver Kid program with a grooming c lass, showman ship class, bull/steer class and a heifer class. The bull/steer class was won by Jayson Labiuk, and 2nd place was Paul Wennekamp. The heifer class was won

by Whitney Labiuk, and 2nd place was Bailey King.

Then we moved into the rest of the show beginning with grooming classes.

We had the steer classes, female classes, and breeders herd. Most of our members have multiple projects and this year we had six of our 12 members bring

A crowd gathered in support of the 8th Annual Derek Bucharski Memorial Awards at the Vermilion Soccer Fields on June 20. Each year, four players are selected from different age groups that have displayed outstanding dedication and team spirit throughout the season.

The awards began in 2009 after the passing of nine-year member of the Vermilion Soccer Association, Derek Bucharski. Not only was he a skillful player, but he loved the game and often volunteered, refereed and went on to play with the Vermilion Men’s Team.

His family choose each year to remember him by presenting these awards to players who display the same passion for soccer, and are selected by the Vermilion Soccer Association Coaches.

In the U12 category, Madison Tovell received the award because she never stopped running and was the heart of her team.

The U14 recipient was Alyx Ward as her attendance was near perfect, even

enough animals to qualify for a breeders herd class. That includes a steer, heifer, and a cow/calf pair. That means a lot of animals in the ring at once plus a lot of extra people to lead all those animals!

We ended the show with the showmanship classes.

The Grand Champion steer was won

by Thomas Bogucky; Reserve Champion steer was won by Justine Eddleston. The Grand Champion female and Reserve Champion female was won by Cheyenne Porter with her 2-year-old pair and yearling heifer. The Breeder’s Herd class was

won by Cheyenne Porter, and 2nd place was Brooke King.

After the show, we hosted a roast beef supper open to all guests which is followed by our awards presentations.

We then moved on to the steer sale and ended with a slave auction. It was a successful day all around and we really want to send out a huge thank you to all the steer buyers, trophy sponsors, slave buyers and all the volunteers that make this awesome day happen. Thank you for supporting 4-H, and we look forward to doing it all again next year!

During Career and Life Management class with Grade 10 students, Mrs. Hart enhanced her lessons and classes by inviting guest speakers to talk about various topics such as finance, personal health, and other “real life” subject matter.

The dust is settling after 10 months of school wraps up. J. R. saw so many students’ academic successes, athletic victories and personal accomplishments throughout the year. The Grade 7 students that we met in September, afraid and shy, transformed into capable junior high students that knew their way. Our seniors will transition into adulthood after they celebrate Graduation, a 12-year journey.

They all demonstrated they are ready for their first birthday cake smashes, to the delight of Mr. Haslehurst and the students. Thanks to our Moms, BTPS, and FCSS for suppor ting this program. Students have learned about how babies differ from each other. They have different likes, wants, and needs. By watching their classroom baby try new things, learn, and overcome challenges over the course of the year, students experienced empathy for others. In turn, they were able to reflect on both their own feelings and their feelings towards each other.

On June 16, the Grade 3 students went to the Telus World of Science. They par ticipated in a Rocks and Minerals workshop and a Thrill Rides workshop. In the Thrill Rides workshop, the students needed to build a roller coaster with a certain number of foam tubing lengths and tape. They needed to make sure their marble got to the end of their roller coaster with enough speed and momentum with gravit y helping the marble along. They needed to incorporate a hill, a curve and loop in their roller coaster. They also watched a 3D IMax film of the migration of the monarch butterfly.

The Grade 1 classes travelled to Paradise Valley for a field trip to the Climb Through Time Museum on June 17. This field trip fit in wonderfully with their Social Studies curriculum about how changes over time have affected and influenced their families and communities today. Some of their favorite things were the school room display where they saw the old desks an d c halk b oar d s an d al so t he o l d store room where they saw toys from long ago. At the very top of the elevator, the auger that directed the flow

of grain is still present, and a window allowed the students to look all the way down the elevator to the bottom. They thought this was very neat. Overall, it was a fantastic field trip and many thanks to the large number of parent volunteers that made it a success.

Grade 2 students had a great time exploring the Ukrainian Village on June 20. They experienced life long ago through a variety of activities and buildings, and they even witnessed roleplayers demonstrating and explaining life in the past. Learning their name in Ukrainian, sampling traditional Ukrainian food, and partaking in traditional Ukrainian dances were just a few of the activities students participated in during their visit.

On June 20, the Grade 1 students had their final visit to the Provincial Park. In the morning, they went on a scavenger hunt, toured with Conservation Officer Mr. Gary Walsh, viewed animal habitats, and looked for pond life at the river. In the afternoon they played at the playground, went to the splash park, and tried their hand at mini golf. Their learning experiences throughout the year on their visits to the park have been incredible.

Mr. Clampitt and Mr. Gnida from the Lion’s Club International presented the Grade 1 and 2 students with Canadian Flags on June 21. In return, the students entertained them with their special song entitled, “Canada in My Pocket”.

We have had a couple more changes to our staffing for next year. We wish Mrs. Stachniak all the best as she has accepted the principalship in Clandonald. We are excited to say that Miss Kjenner is no longer going to Kitscoty Elementary School and will be remaining in VES. As well, a new division 1 music/early literacy teacher, Miss Taylor, will be arriving from Newfoundland.

Students removed loose papers, fermenting lunches, and ripe gym gear from their lockers. Teachers’ desks were visible again as piles of marking and lesson plans were finished and filed away. The library, converting into a Learn-

ing Commons, has steadily transformed.

Bulletin boards and display cases were emptied to make space for next year’s work and décor. The gymnasium-turnedexam space was converted back into open space in preparation for the 2016 Graduation ceremony.

VES Kindergarten Graduation The students of VES Kindergarten celebrated their Graduation on June 22 and 23. It was a proud day for the parents and the young students themselves as they performed a variety of upbeat songs.

“It’s impossible to realize how fast this school year has gone. Last year when you came for the Kindergarten Open House, you had these tagalongs on your legs,” said VES Principal Michelle Webb. “Now when you see the children walk in today, they are filled with confidence.

They are excited to be at school and they made so many new friends,” said Principal Webb.

Even though the weather was less then per fect the elementary students still had a wonderful Track and Field Day on Friday, June 17. Mr. Wasylik and all his student helpers made sure each event ran smoothly as students participated in long jump, ball throw, kick ball, and track event. All the students were treated to a hot dog lunch with a drink and freezie or ice cream. Thank you to Mrs. Gray and all her helpers for doing a great job of lunch.

On Monday, June 20 the students for Grade 2 and Grade 5 hopped on the bus to travel to the Telus World of Science to spend the day. Grade 2 enjoyed their field trip to the Telus World of Science. Some of their favourite parts were making boats, the dance floor in the Science Garage; guess the smell, the elevator that gave you a view of Alberta above ground and underground and the photo booth. The Grade 5 students really enjoyed the program they participated in “Fire and Fury”. It was so exciting to see chemical reactions, explosions and fires

On Tuesday, June 21 the elementary staff and students gathered for June Happigrams. The Grade 5 students entertained those gathered with a variety of songs on their recorders, which they have been learning to play since February. To end the performance Chase, Ryan, Nathan and Landon did an excellent job rapping the poem, “Summer’s Here”, by Helen H Moore.

Congratulations to all the June Happigram winners for their hard work throughout the year.

Also on Tuesday, Ms. McDermott’s and Mrs. Moore’s students were presented with Canadian flags from members of the Lions Club. The students were excited to receive their flags and can’t wait to wave them proudly on July 1 as they celebrate Canada Day! Congratulations to all of our Kindergarten kids as they celebrated their graduations last week. Parent, siblings, relatives and friends all gathered to cheer on the kindergarten children as they preformed songs, were presented with certificates and enjoyed treats with their guests. In the afternoon they all enjoyed the Vermilion Spray Park.

After a long week of studying, writing exams and cleaning out lockers students from Grade 6 to 8 were treated to a day at the movies. On Friday, June 24 the students traveled to Lloydminster to see the movie, “Finding Dory”.

We have had another exciting, eventful and wonderful year here at St. Jerome’s

and are looking forward to the 2016-2017 school year. Construction and renovations will continue over the summer and into the fall with major changes happening to the office, staffroom, Gathering Area.

We wish all of our families and staff a safe and blessed summer! School starts back on Tuesday, September 6.

Families celebrated the early accomplishments of their children at the St. Jerome’s Kindergarten Graduation on June 22 and 23.

Children entertained their parents with a song they had learned throughout the year, and a slideshow was presented of the year’s highlights.

“My favorite part of Kindergarten was going outside and playing with the leaves,” said Luca Maddex who is looking forward to Grade 1.

A list of what the children wanted to become when they grew up was read aloud.

Sydney Waldorf said,“’Show and Tell’ was my favorite part of Kindergarten. I want to be a Dance Teacher and a Professional Racoon Finder because I have a stuffed raccoon that is soft and cuddly and doesn’t bite. I also watch them on TV.” Students were presented scrolls for their accomplishments by the principal, Allan Chase. The celebration was brought to a close as families enjoyed cupcakes and visiting.
