Lea Park Rodeo cowboys and cowgirls thrilled the audience during the Friday night performances; as they fought to win their timed events fans followed the action as they relaxed and soaked up the sun.

Some top names in bull riding, bronco-busting, tie down roping, team roping, bareback riding, steer wrestling and ladies barrel racing travelled to Lea Park on June 10 and competed to win at the 5th biggest Pro Rodeo in Canada.

Kyle Lucas took 1st place on Friday night in Tie-down roping with a time of 8.4 seconds.

Bull rider Todd Chotowetz, from Major, Saskatchewan, said he was disappointed that the bull he was riding bucked him off.

“Some bulls just don’t want to co-operate. I’m heading down to Sisters, Oregon tonight, where we plan on bull riding again tomorrow night.”

“The plan is to make a living riding bulls,” said Chotowetz. “To be a Canadian Champion and world champion is the goal. I started out Steer riding like many of the other riders here today.

Lea Park Rodeo Coordinator, Greg Tobler said he was very happy with the attendance at this year’s rodeo despite the rain on Saturday. “ I t ’s a n o t h e r s u c c e s s f u l rodeo, fortunately the weather stayed dry for Friday, but it is a pity Saturday was so wet,” said Tobler.

Afterwards crowds flocked to the beer gardens and many families enjoyed camping for the weekend at the Lea Park grounds.

If you see a Coors truck roll in to town, let it be known that they are here giving Vermilion residents an opportunity to celebrate their community spirit once again. On June 6, it was announced that Vermilion had been selected as one of the six finalists in the Coors Banquet One Horse Town Nationwide Contest, and voting opened the same day.

“We will be parking a Coors truck in Vermilion to remind residents to keep voting daily,” said Coors Canada Rural Alberta Sales Representative, Cole Ambrock.

“We are ecstatic to be a finalist in the Coors Banquet One Horse Town Contest.

16th Annual Credit Union Charity Golf Tournament

Our kids have been beneficiaries in past years through sports and the hot lunch program. The Credit Union is a great sponsor in the community and always does a great job organizing the tournament.”

This year, the Vermilion Credit Union has chosen to donate the proceeds to the Vermilion Food Bank, the Mannville and District Food Bank and the Vermilion Outdoor Rink Development.

Registrants played 18 holes of golf and had further chances to donate with extra fundraisers posted around the course.

There was a ‘Putt For Lotto’ draw, a ‘Smoker and Meat’ draw and a hefty prize for the ‘Hole In One’ Challenge. Every one that played received a barbeque tool set.

Volunteer and patron spirit soared at the 16th Annual Charity Golf Tournament even though they were slightly down in numbers this year. The event was held at the Mannville Golf Course this year and saw just under 70 golfers.

The Vermilion Credit Union has used the funds raised at past golf tournaments to donate to several local non-for-profit organizations.

Credit Union CEO, Dave Eremko said, “We believe that the effort makes a difference. We also had nearly 70 corporate sponsors from the community this year.

It will be a good day. Between donations, fees, and extra fundraisers throughout the golf course, the golf tournament will have raised in excess of $100,000 in its 16 years running.

Cycling To Save Lives

Eileen Zheng arrived for her second time in Vermilion on June 5 but this time as a living kidney donor. Zheng, 27, from Vancouver, British Columbia, is part way through her journey of cycling across Canada to raise awareness for organ donation.

In 2008, Zheng came to Vermilion with Katimavik (a National Youth Service Program) where she volunteered for three months at the School of Hope, J. R. Robson School and completed various activities including tree planting in the Vermilion Provincial Park.

“I hope there is time to see how tall the trees are now,” said Zheng.

“When I came to Vermilion, I knew my mom had Polycystic Kidney Disease and while I was here, my dad called to let me know that she would have to go on dialysis. At that time, we were uneducated about organ donation and even though I was willing to donate my kidney then, my mother said, ‘No, you still have your whole life ahead of you.’”

After seven years of dialysis, and more complications, Zheng worked with doctors and psychologists to prepare herself as an organ donor for her mom. On Mother’s Day, 2014, her mother accepted the offer to receive Zheng’s left kidney, and on February 25, 2015, both surgeries for

the kidney transplant were successfully completed.

“We are also grateful for the blood donors that contributed, as my mom had to have two blood transfusions from having lost so much blood during the transplant surgery,” said Zheng.

The pur pose for her trip across Canada is that Zheng wanted to show people that when you sign up to be an organ donor, even a living organ donor, you are able to go on to live a healthy and active lifestyle.

“I was up walking around the same day I had surgery, and within a month, I was back to work and biking. Within five weeks, I was biking 70 km a day to work, volunteer sites and school. My mother had taught me how to ride a bicycle when I was 8 years-old,” said Zheng.

Having seen first-hand the people young and old still on waiting lists for receiving organ donations, Zheng talked to the dialysis clinic to see what she could do to help.

“Terry Fox was my hero, and I thought if he could run across Canada, I could bike across,” said Zheng.

She decided to create the Gift From Within Tour and bike across Canada to raise awareness, increase donor registration, and raise funds for the life-saving work that the Canadian Transplant Association does.

“My goal is to fundraise $70,000, get one thousand registrations and encourage connections between the different organ organizations working in different provinces,” said Zheng. “I think people should sign up, because if you are willing to take organs, you should be willing to give them. Life does not stop when donating an organ, it is where another life can begin.”

H av e y o u e v e r noticed that Father’s Day does not quite get the same hype as Mother’s Day? Wo r k i n g i n t h e newspaper industry and throughout my life, I have noticed that fathers don’t quite get the same amount of recognition as our mothers do.

When Mother’s Day is near you can hear the buzzing of children and adults wondering what they are going to do with and for their mother’s, but during the past week or so I have not heard the same chatter for the dad’s of our communities.

Happy Father’s Day

what is the meaning of this proverb? I did some research, and I found it to mean that children are a gift, a privilege, and a blessing and to have parents especially fathers who love and care for you, is something so special and precious. It signifies the importance of the father’s role.

When you look at the relationship between a father and his children in a normal family setting, it is clear to see that a father is his son’s first hero and his daughter’s first love.

Dads are usually the main financial provider for the family. They work hard at their job all day and still find the time to fix things around the house when they are broken.

When you are young, whether you are a son or a daughter they toss a ball around with you and build forts. He takes

you on family outings such as fishing or sports events.

He cheers you on when you are participating in sports, whether it’s at an ice rink watching you play hockey or figure skating, or at a soggy baseball field due to rain.

You can be guaranteed; he gives a serious eye to any guy who shows up sniffing around his daughter to take her on a date. He can take measure in a blink of an eye if this interested young fellow has good intentions or shady intentions, because he was once a young man too.

As we grow into our teenage years, he often loses the hero status and first love status for a while, as we strive to become independent individuals and disagree with the many strict rules he puts in place to help keep us safe.

In our day, a mouse was just a small rodent, and not a device for interacting with a computer; online was a place to hang clothes to dry and did not mean being connected through the internet; a web site was a spider’s web and not an internet address. We

sent our letters by the post office and not by e-mail. As for texting, that probably meant getting something out of a school text book.

In our day, the word “gay” was an adjective meaning “merry.”

Upon becoming an adult, and a little more wise, the hero and first love status returns. For a son, his dad will always be his hero and for a daughter, he will always be the man of her dreams.

This coming weekend is Father’s Day and dads will be honoured with the classic BBQ, cards and probably even some gifts they don’t like, but he will smile and say thank you. Most dads will not want to be fussed about because they do not feel as though it is necessary, or just a little to manly to admit they like the fussing.

So ignore your Dad’s persistent “no no its ok, I don’t need anything for Father’s Day,” and do something special for your dad. You know your dad best, and only you know what he will love. Dads need fussing about too.

Vermilion RCMP Report Update

Sergeant Boehr, from the Vermilion RCMP detachment, presented a police report update to the Vermilion Town Council on June 8.

It was reported that since January the detac hment responded to 4 59 calls for ser vice, which was up 30 calls from the previous year. In 62 of those calls, charges were laid, and 39 are still under investigation.

“Our detachment has been struggling with staf fing issues for quite some time since I have been here,” said Sergeant Boehr.

Summer entertaining is just around the corner, and this shrimp dip recipe is a party favourite. The simple ingredients allow the delicate flavour of the shrimp to come though. It can be served with crackers or celery. On the land locked prairies, seafood is not usually a regular part of our diet, but it is always an enjoyable and very healthy treat.

Shrimp contains a lot of nutrients that are not common to our prairie diet, so including it will give you an abundant amounts of vitamin B12, B6, B3, A, E, iodine, zinc and omega 3.

The iodine contributes to a healthy thyroid and the zinc helps the regulate leptin, and both nutrients aid in healthy weight regulation. Shrimp is a good source of important antioxidants selenium and astaxanthin as well as anti-inflammatory sterols. Selenium is

There are four people that are in custody that we suspect have been responsible for the theft. The group that was found responsible is now in jail. The majority of the stolen vehi-

cles were recovered the next day. We believe that the thieves were in it for the money,” explained Boehr.

Boehr added that RCMP members have been encouraged to go out into the community and make meaningful contacts by getting involved with the schools and playing sports or by engaging with the public in general.

The June 3-5 weekend was a great weekend to be outdoors.

The wet stuff let up, and the sun shone, warming and dr ying things out; making the day outdoors beautiful from sunup to sunset.

Of course, I had a list of outdoor adventures I wanted to pursue. However, there was still yard and garden work that needed attention. With all the rain and moisture and now with the warm sunshine the grass was on super grow.

Also, the garden finally dried out enough for the final till, which weighed heavy on my shoulders as my garden is planted well before this time every year, so staying close to home was demanded.

As the mornings are still damp, I couldn’t till the garden or cut the grass until after noon hour; so I still had time to take my pup Miss Oohohh out for a walk and check out spring in all its glory at sunrise.

She chased birds, found a frog and inspected it until she found it boring.

After a good run chasing flying birds everywhere she ended the walk with a cool swim in the duck pond; much to the dislike of the resident ducks. The ducks are nesting, and Miss Oohohh doesn’t bother them, I think they have an understanding; she is allowed to swim and explore as long as she doesn’t bother the nesting.

After a nice cooldown, I thought we would have a few hours of training time, she is certainly big enough for sled training and is filling out the harness to the max already. Even though there is no snow, I got the winter sled out and put her harness on her with no fuss put up; most likely because of her mastering the packs and it has a harness system.

When I brought out the sled, she immediately jumped on the sled and sat down with that look …”I am ready for a ride”, I thought hmmm this may take some work, so I got a leash and attached it to the harness. It took a little convincing to get her off the sled for her ride but with the leash, I lead her across the grass. Without snow on the ground, there was a little drag on the sled; she felt the weight and kept looking back to see what was happening.

Once around the range and she wasn’t doing bad, except for the time she laid fully down with the “oh my leg, I am hurt” scenario that I didn’t fall for and got her up and did another lap.

By that second lap she was adapted to the weight and was pulling like she was born to pull a sled; well, she was born to pull a sled, and now she was, so I removed the leash, and she walked beside me. Soon she was pulling ahead of me faster than I can walk, and soon she was running full out, she did good and made me proud, so I unhooked her from the sled. We will just do a little at a time and by winter, she will be a pro. We will have more sled pull sessions and work on commands such as “Haw and Gee” meaning turn left or right. I think she would/will make a good lead dog because when I take her for a quad run with the “four wheeler” she will run out front and lead the way, and for now, I follow along the trails, soon I will follow but give her left and right commands.

Just after noon it was hot and things dried out nicely; however, the garden was still damp, but I got the final till in, but never got anything planted as we had archery customers and shooters in all evening. That also put a dampener on our fishing plans for the evening, so Miss Oohohh and I went to bed tired that evening even though our adventures were cut a little short.

On Sunday, it was another beautiful day right from sunrise; it got a little hot for planting potatoes and the rest of the garden, but I set a goal of 50 super hills for the day.

The super hills required a two foot long and near as wide hole with a seed potatoe in each corner and one in the center, so it involved a lot of digging and burying.

Now that’s right up my personal assistant’s alley; however, by lunch, I had to get the secretary my wife Roxanne to send my personal assistant a memo telling her although her help was appreciated I needed her to please cease digging the holes so deep. Apparently Miss Oohohh didn’t get the memo because she would come behind me after I dug the perfect super hill and with

the hill to find I am now a couple of seed taters short.

Apparently once quality control fails an item, the protocol is they run it to the lawn tossing it in the air and burning circles around it and keep tossing it until it’s big enough for shredded hash browns. It was also apparent that once quality control failed and disposed of an item, it was strenuous work and there must be union rules stating a nap is in order after each procedure. Upon nap time for quality control, I cheated and would get as many buried quickly without inspection.

It was a long day, and we took several breaks and went for several walks and a swim in the duck pond, but while some got a lot of work done; there were others who didn’t get so much done, but all in

unrelenting enthusiasm dig the hole deeper; in fact so deep, we were afraid she was going to strike water or oil. It was bad enough she dug out the one hole but the debris flew so high, and far she covered in the hole behind, so I would have to go back and reconstruct her handy work.

To hinder this routine, I just dug a couple at a time put in the potato seed gems and covered it back up immediately, which cut done on hole mayhem.

However, it appeared she got tired of being a personal assistant and decided to become head of quality control…I would cut a couple of choice seed potatoes and place them in the hole turn around to cut a few more to complete

all as the sun set it was a good day.

My goal for 50 super hills was a struggle, but the end tally was 56 hills, even with the help of my assistant. I plan on 52 Super Hills for home and family, one hill a week, and eight hills for cabin and seed, for a total of 60 hills, but will plant more as space and seed provide.

I ’ll c o nfe s s, I ’m no card player right off the start. I’m just not, but I feel that we must make the best of the hand we’re dealt in life and not always use the fact that we’re dealt a losing hand and just resign ourselves to a life of ill health and failure!!

Just look there how handsome, or beautiful that person is compared with me.

And listen to the things they can do that I could never do. On, how come they’re so smart and look at dumb old me!! You’d think that everyone gets four aces or all face cards and it’s just a matter of picking up the winnings. Wouldn’t that be nice if life were that easy? We don’t have any choice of parents, we take the one’s we’re born to, and most of our parents tried to do the best they could to steer us a course to success, but we have a duty to ourselves to take the wheel and chart a course to the destination we’d like to

Playing The Hand We’re Dealt

We can’t all be foremen, or steamship captains, or lawyers or store clerks or whatever. We all have talents and we have things we like or don’t. For instance, I wouldn’t want to wear a necktie and suit and have a desk job. I’d sooner be outside in the cold and dust and work whatever hours instead. Don’t think I could ever resign myself to having someone order me around and tell me how or what to do. I’d discard that card right quick!!

Some folks have strong bodies and can do physical jobs that others certainly wouldn’t be able to c ope with the heavy work, but they hate the thought processes that you’d need to design a bridge or program a computer. Yes we have to learn to play the cards and make the best of the hand we’re dealt. No use trying to play music if the lord never gave you the talent for it!!

We all think we would like to be a good neighbor but at times you think maybe there are some that should be tossed

Vermilion And Area Crisis Line

The Vermilion and Area Crisis Line is a volunteer, non-profit organization. All calls are answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in Edmonton from trained listeners. The phone line is available for anyone needing support and someone to listen.

With the Fort McMurray fires and the downturn of the economy over the past year, crisis lines have seen an increase in the volume of calls and need for the service. As families navigate financial stresses, losses, and everyday pressures, the crisis line is a service that provides a comforting ear for many to talk to.

On June 16, 2016, the Vermilion and Area Crisis Line is holding its Annual Walk/ Run Event at the Vermilion Provincial Park.

The event is to raise funds to keep the phone lines open and available for those needing it. The walk/run event starts at 6 p.m. and participants have the option of walking or running 2 km, 5 km, or 10 km.

For a $25 registration, participants

receive a t-shirt, refreshments, and snacks, and knowing that they have helped someone in need. You can pick up registration forms around Vermilion at local businesses, at our Facebook page www.facebook.com/vermilioncrisisline, or register right at the event.

Please Like our Facebook page to keep updated on all our events and volunteer opportunities and share it with your friends and family as you never know when someone will need help. The more people know about the service, the more people will use it and not feel like there is nowhere to turn.

Here we are, born in a card game kind of deal. The cards of life are dealt with our hair color and eyes all decided. How tall or strong we’re made, even if we’re male or female. It’s all in the cards. We are what we are and we have to make the best of the hand we’re dealt. If we were lucky, again that’s in the cards, we’ll be born into a nice home with caring parents and have a chance to have our talents and wants and wishes observed and developed and have parents that guided us away from harmful pursuits and habits that would ruin our lives in spite of our talents. I’m sure you’ve seen folks in your travels who have been born to incredible talents that were wasted by the effects of booze or bad spending habits or both, and had terrible lives. Happens ALL the time!!

Ever visit a rehab hospital and see the results of accident or illness that have left a terrible wreckage of life in their wake.

These folks are trying to get back some kind of life but the odds are terrible against them. Yes, they certainly drew a bad hand there. I spent five weeks in there getting back my mobility, but many never can or will!! When I get into my vehicle and know I can drive around the country I feel so fortunate to be able to do that when I hear so many have come to that junction in the trial of life when they are no longer independent and need to rely on someone to be kind and lend a hand to those who can’t drive any longer. It’s a cloud that hangs over all of us seniors.

No, we must treasure each little win in this game of cards, the ability to walk and be able to do our own cooking and cleaning or even dress ourselves. Don’t take it for granted because you never know when a “Joker” may turn up in your hand that will affect your health, and all things you hold dear. Like I say, I don’t play cards but I am in this game of life and the dealer, while he has been kind, may at any time decide my turn for the “Joker” may be the next card dealt!!

Once again the Western Financial Group, Vermilion Branch was successful at obtaining a $5000 infrastructure grant that was donated to the Town of Vermilion for the repair of the dugouts at Vermilion’s Pioneer Park Ball Diamonds.

The eight dugouts are being refaced with aluminum sheeting. Western Financial Group staff also supplied labor to assist with the project. Money raised annually through ‘The Support the Cause Fund Raiser’ funded this project.

‘The voyage of discovery is not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.’ Marcel Proust Discoveries come in many different situations and locations. It is not that people make discoveries but rather what they do with them once they have been revealed. Over the last few weeks, the students at Dewberry School, through determination and perseverance, have unearthed many such discoveries.

Four girls ventured into the land of Junior High Track at the BTPS finals in Vermilion, June 1. What an amazing day of discoveries it was for them. Not only did they compete well but they brought back some lessons that we are sure will help them improve for next year. Jace Weidmark received 1st in 100 m and triple jump, 2nd in hurdles and 3rd in long jump. Jelena Parr placed 5th in both the triple and long jumps. Keyauna Parr placed 3rd in discus.

V ES h a s b e e n learning about virtues all year long. The over-riding virtue has been respect and it is what we are concentrating on throughout the month of June. Students learn about being respectful to themselves, others, and their environment.

Students have been eager readers this year and have exceeded their VES school goal for Accelerated Reader. The initial goal was 16,000 points, and as of June 1, they had reached 20739 points. To congratulate students on their success, we will be hosting an AR celebration on June 27. There will be an assembly, a family picnic lunch, and a motivational magic presentation by Steve Harmer on the Seven Habits of Highly Effective Kids.

The last day for taking AR quizzes will be June 20.

The last day for students to return their library books is June 13, however, students are still able to complete AR quizzes with their personal books and books within their classroom. All books not returned will be considered lost.

Students will be sent home with notices to pay for the replacement cost to reorder

T h e S t . J e r o m e ’s S r. H i g h Tr a c k a n d Field season came to an exciting finish with five athletes competing in Provincials in Edmonton on June 3 and 4. Kael Lawrence faced tough competition in the Sr. Men’s Triple Jump, finishing 15th in the province, while Shaelyn Rehmann fought hard in the Intermediate Women’s Javelin competition also finishing 15th. Zachariah Black competed on the Zone 4 x 400m Relay team, which finished in 9th place and he finished in 13th place in a very tough 400m run in which records were broken and new records set. Braeden Nelson represented St. Jerome’s in the Discus for the second year in a row, finishing in 6th place. Anna Ulrich ran to a 7th place finish in the 1500m and a personal best time and 4th place finish in the 300m run.

The combined points, made St. Jerome’s School the 12th ranked 1”A” school out of sixty-four competing schools. Congratulations athletes, and well done on a successful season!

The Voyage Of Discovery

On June 3, Mrs. Zayac’s Grade 5/6 class ventured into a wetland wonder at Elk Island National Park. Here they participated in two field studies and explored some terrestrial eco-zones of Canada.

Through experiments and activities, they studied characteristics of “the bog” and how it relates to the diversity of wetlands in Elk Island! They also got down and dirty to learn about the characteristics of marshes and examine the relationships between species in “the living waters”.

They even got up close and personal to discover the creatures that call the pond home.

While some were discovering wetlands, two of our high school track stars were racing against other athletes across the province during Provincials in Edmonton.

First up, Keagan Rewuski dashed around the track, completing the 3000 m run in 12th place but obtaining a personal best!

Fabulous job, Keagan! Later on in the day, Kyra Weidmark laced up to participate in the 4x100 relay. Her team won their first heat and then moved up into a faster heat, attaining a 9th place in the

final heat. What an amazing effort, Kyra!

June 6 brought about sunny skies and a wonderful day to join three elementary schools in some friendly competition. Marwayne Jubilee School hosted the annual elementary track but all the students showed superb sportsmanship throughout the day as they ran around the track, threw balls and jumped their way across the sand, over hurdles and

onto the mat. It was a marvelous day to watch the camaraderie occur between the students from the three schools.

The experiences during these last few events have proven to open some students’ eyes and shown the potential that they can achieve. With practice and heart they have learned that triumphs are always earned, never given. Hopefully, this knowledge will propel them to explore and appreciate many more landscapes that will arise during their life.

Learning To Be Respectful

Miss Kailey Leggette, a first year teacher at VES, received the Alberta School Boards Association Edwin Parr Award. This is a very prestigious award that identifies six outstanding first year teachers in the province of Alberta. Kailey was nominated by her school community and underwent a very rigorous interview process that allowed the selection committee to better understand the work that was occurring in her classroom. They determined that she was a very deserving candidate and put her at the top of Zone 2/3 and one of the top six in all of Alberta.

As the school year wraps up, it is a time when changes happen. This coming year, we will be saying farewell to some VES staff and would like to wish them all the best in their future endeavours. After doing the job of administrative assistant for 27 years, Debbie Marriott has decided that the lake is calling her and she will be retiring at the end of this year. We will not be offering a French program next year, so Mdm. Ishaq will be leaving VES but only going the short distance to JR Robson, where she will be teaching full time. Miss Kjenner will be driving down the road to Kitscoty Elementary to teach Grade 1 next year. Miss Leggette has decided to

go back to Didsbury to be with her family.

Although Mrs. Prill will not be on staff next year, we are hoping that she will still be able to work with us as often as possible.

We would like to welcome Mrs. Erin Baldwin as our administrative assistant and Ms. Lisa Golding, who will be teaching division 1 music and early literacy.

“We’re going to the Zoo, Zoo, Zoo! How about you, you, you?” The Grade 3 students were excited to head out to the Edmonton Valley Zoo on Wednesday, June 8. The students arrived just in time to see Lucy the elephant paint a picture and learn how elephant manure can be used to make recycled paper.

Students then broke into small groups to go explore different areas of the zoo. At 12:30 the entire group followed their Zoo Guide, Allison, for a two-hour in depth exploration of “Fur, Feathers and Scales”.

Students learned the difference between mammals, reptiles, and birds and had the opportunity to interact with a tortoise, a ringed-neck dove and a ferret. They also found out some information about many other animals that have their home at the zoo. The students reluctantly got back on the bus at the end of the day as the students wanted to spend much more time exploring the zoo. Thank you to Trudy Maddex for driving us and all the adults who came along to make the day a great success.

Vermilion Outreach School recently celebrated graduation with ten students being honored on June 3.

Graduation is a highlight of our school year. The students and their families celebrated with a supper and ceremony, and we were very pleased to have Dr. Richard Starke join us again this year. Bernie Huedepohl addressed the students on behalf of Buffalo Trail Public Schools, and Jim Sanson spoke on behalf of East Central Catholic Schools.

Courtney Campbell was awarded the Premier’s Citizenship Award. Justin Thompson from Vermilion Rotary Club presented a new award this year of $500 to Dana Drury. Mitchell Amero received the

We want to thank Tami Klatt for the wonderful pictures, Mrs. J’s Catering for the great food, School of Hope for the use of the hall and all our guests and speakers.

The school year has been a strong year for our program. We had a large number of registrations and quickly we were helping around 35 students per day. Our population is always diverse as students bring different talents, personalities, and goals. This year, the group of students connected very well with each other creating a lively atmosphere. The students took on an assortment of activities, many organized by Jodi our VIBE coach and several students became mentors for young people at Vermilion

Elementary School. The mentors planned lessons with growth and learning for both the mentor and mentee. Another group volunteered monthly with the hot lunch program at VES. Our Asset Building, organized with the assistance of Kate our Family School Liaison Worker, involved many students and gave them opportunities to learn topics beyond their regular courses. We brought in speakers on healthy relationships and had many different visitors coming into the building. We were excited to partner with Alberta Health Addiction services to provide a peer support group that met several times each month.

The graduation was an excellent opportunity to celebrate a great year. It has been especially different for the school in adjusting to a new location on main street, but staff

and students are very happy with our new home. There will be some small changes to our staff as Kate will be leaving. We will miss her as we welcome Loranne back to our building.

Thanks to the all the organizations who supported us this past year: the Edge, Striker’s Bowling, Lakeland College, Vermilion Elementary School, Vermilion Public Library and our neighbors downtown. We would also like to thank the two school districts for the tremendous support from both Buffalo Trail Public Schools and East Central Catholics Schools, who operate the school in partnership. Our program will be continuing to operate and provide educational opportunities for those who require a flexible, independent program beyond a traditional classroom.

Don’t Let Your Car Drive You Crazy Away From Home

(NC) Road trips are synonymous with summer. There’s nothing more exhilarating than hitting the open road and forgetting about the daily stressors of everyday life. That is, until you run into car issues along the way. “ Reg ular maintenan c e c an help reduce the risk of car problems during a road trip,” says Darryl Croft, automotive maintenance expert at OK Tire. “But an extra check of the fluids, oil, and tires before leaving gives some added security. So does packing an emergency kit that includes items like foam tire sealant, jumper cables, a flashlight and batteries, water, blanket, candles and a first aid kit.”

Before hitting the road this summer, here is Croft’s checklist of possible

problems and how they can be avoided: A flat tire can sideline your trip. While you can’t avoid a nail or something sharp getting stuck in your tire, an inspection of each one before you head out can reveal signs of uneven wear, improper inflation, or treads worn to the point that they need to be replaced.

Check your brakes before taking that winding mountain drive. Brakes should be regularly inspected for function, as well as the amount of life left in the pads.

Also, over time, contaminants may get into the brake fluid, so the system may need to be flushed and filled with fresh fluid.

Failure of the coolant will leave you steaming by the roadside. An inspection of the cooling system will identify leaks and weak hoses. Replacing worn parts and conducting a coolant exchange can

ensure your car is road trip worthy.

A faulty transmission could end your trip. The transmission is a complex, and expensive, mechanism that is also the lifeblood of your vehicle. If you typically do a lot of city driving, which involves a lot of stop-and-go traffic, the transmission is likely receiving a lot of wear. It’s important to regularly check, and top up, the transmission fluid to avoid any

problems.

Croft points out that these items are all part of a regular vehicle maintenance program. However, their significance increases before any longer than usual drive. A regular, bi-annual inspection by your auto service provider at the start of spring or winter, is an excellent way to avoid car troubles on your next summer road trip.

VES Students Travel Back In Time

The students of VES School learned more about local histor y when they made their annual trip to the Vermilion Heritage Museum on June 10. Sixty children in total explored the museum’s galleries. Nine museum volunteers plus adult chaperones escorted the children through the galleries.

One volunteer, Ruby Ruud, who donated her wedding dress which is over 50 years old to the museum, took

questions from the children and filled them in on local history. Minister Mark Murray volunteered in Gallery 5 at the General Store, where he joked with the children as they pretended to buy sweets.

Tom Kibblewhite told the children stories about his Grandfathers’ Chaps in the Ag-Society section, also in Gallery 5.

“The children look up to these older people and t h ey b e li eve w hat t h ey are telling them,” said the Heritage Museum Secretary, Audrey Chesterman.

Library Announces Lower Level Renovations

The Town of Vermilion Library Board held its Annual General Meeting on June 1. The board members made a formal announcement about their plans for the lower level renovations.

“No formal bid and tender has been accepted as of yet,” said Vermilion Library Manager Stuart Pauls.

The current library basement has not had a renovation since 1975.

currently out to tender until June 10. “ We are aiming to have a contractor by July 1,” said Pauls.

Pauls said at the meeting that the library aims to be more of a “modern librar y in the community.” “ VES students have been counting their reading hours online through the Summer Read in g Pro gr am. We had 8 2 students last year on the program and we look for ward to running the program again this summer,” said Pauls.

Senior Rides For Children’s Cancer Marie Conboy Reporter

S e v e n t y - s e v e n - y e a r- o l d , N o r m Roach from Mannville is riding 500 km on his Recumbent Trike in an effort to raise funds for ‘Fight Kid’s Cancer’ as part of the Great Cycle Challenge Canada.

To date Norm has raised $1211 to help fight children’s cancer across Canada.

Norm has ridden 205.1 km so far and his goal is 500 km.

“I try not to ride in the rain because the visibility is bad for both me and the road drivers,” said Roach. “The longest distance I have done so far was riding to the truck stop in Innisfree from Mannville and back in one day.”

Roach says he feels his fitness is improving since he took on the challenge.

“We got a device with a GPS feature from The Great Cycle Challenge that we attach when we are riding, it calculates the total distance travelled,” explained Roach.

The crowd continued to grow as locals lined up for the BBQ lunch at Vermilion UFA, held on June 10 in appreciation for farmers. The free lunch was a spread of barbequed hamburgers, hotdogs, pasta salad and a variety of pies accompanied by lots of in-store specials, face painting and entertainment by Leather and Lace.

In collaboration with the appreciation for farmers, patrons were also congratulating Manager Jack Rehill, on his 40 years of service with UFA. Over the last few years, UFA has been building up the annual lunch as a bigger promotion and way of celebrating farmers across Alberta.

“Farmers make our job possible and we wanted to take the time to show our gratitude and say thanks to the farmers,” said Rehill.

The farm store had many door prizes and draws including a Harvest Wind-Up Party for 40 people by entering at participating UFA’s across Alberta. The theme for this year’s Farmer’s Day was, ‘honouring the past, appreciating the present, and visualizing the future.”

“Farmers do a lot for our community.

Without them, we would not be where we are,” said Stacey Teasdale, a UFA Employee.

“The meal was very good, the pie was awesome and the music was great,” said patron Stephania Jacula.

The local up and coming band, Leather and Lace, volunteered to play a selection of original songs and covers throughout the afternoon. Members Ray Blackmore, Lacey McCrae, Al McKelvie and Graeme Mellway are mostly local, rural residents who enjoyed entertaining and even threw in several jokes throughout the event.

Under sunny skies, The County of Two Hills Agriculture Service Board in conjunction with the Derwent Agricultural Society held a free BBQ lunch on June 10 at the Derwent Arena in recognition of the importance of Agriculture in our communities.

Four employees of The County of Two Hills volunteered their time on their day off to cook up hamburgers and hot dogs while other employees of The County prepared and served macaroni salads, potato salads and watermelon to the large crowd that showed up to celebrate Farmers Day. According to Brad Straty from The County of Two Hills all employees from The County participates every year in the event and each year the event moves to another community within The County. The County anticipates the event will be held in the

Village of Myrnam next year.

The Pesky Dandelion And The Demon Caterpiller

A motion was passed approving the spraying of herbicide on Town owned sports fields at Town Council on June 7.

“This year was probably the perfect storm for dandelions with the warm spring and in the ball diamonds especially, there has been a lot more dandelions which were much higher than the grass. It can interfere with sports,” said Director of Community Services, Sean Bell.

“Some people complained to us that they didn’t want to play on our sports fields because of our dandelion issue, saying that it’s not that easy to see a white ball in a field.

We would like the opportunity to spray the

sports fields and get a hold on the problem,” said Bell.

Currently the Town has control measures in place that involve hand picking and in some cases spraying, typically in the industrial areas, drainage ditches, airport area, and on the outskirts of town to control noxious weeds like Scentless Chamomile, Canada Thistle, and Common Tansy.

Vermilion resident, Lil Kohn attended Council on June 7 to voice her concerns in favour of spraying “pesky dandelions” and “the demon black caterpillars.”

“The dandelion mess invades Vermilion every spring. Why has the Town Council decided that to spray the dandelions is a non essential service? Why should chil-

dren have to play in a field where there are so much of these dandelions?!” Lil Kohn asked Council.

“Is it really that costly to control it? You should consider the fact that in time the dandelion could literally infest on larger Town Tracks of land,” said Lil. “The reason that the chemicals are not being used is because the environment committee came to the town several years ago with a recommendation and passed a law that we wouldn’t spray anymore. We have been discussing the dandelion situation at Council and we are going to put it into the budget,” replied Mayor MacDuff.

“I don’t think Mother Nature has any flaws, I hate dandelions more than anybody. Several other communities are not spraying. The issue of using herbicide comes down to concerns about the

health of children and families versus the aesthetics of seeing dandelions around the community,” added MacDuff.

“What are you going to do about the Black Caterpillar?” questioned Lil. “If you don’t control the demon black caterpillar, don’t you know that they will multiply 10 fold by this time next year.”

Mayor MacDuff said Council would discuss the situation at a future meeting but that there was no money in the budget to spray caterpillars this year.

After consideration, Council agreed to spraying herbicides on Town owned sport fields using responsible practices in the Fall of 2016.

Director of Community Services, Sean Bell confirmed that he will send out information to the public pending Council’s decision.

‘Taking Shape’ End of Year Showcase Shape Art and Wellness Studio held their end of year competitive showcase ‘Taking Shape,’ highlighting the 2015/2016 SHAPE dancers, vocalists, and artists at the Lakeland College, Alumni Hall on June 5.

A wide variety of dance genres, including tap, hip-hop and classical were performed for a more than half full theater. Thirty-two dances were performed in total.

The recital called, ‘Taking Shape’ was a competitive showcase and exploration of music and movement.

Visual Art for the recital was directed by Monica To and Joan Blamire.

Owner and Choreographer Leigha Wald said she was delighted with how the recital went and that everyone did a wonderful job.

Thirty teams gathered in Vermilion on June 4 – 5 for the Brian Poon Baseball Tournament. The tournament was named after a past Vermilion resident who was a large supporter of baseball, and it welcomed children of all ages from the Lakeland Minor Ball League.

The Bantam Vermilion Reds played Lamont on June 4. The Reds’ chatter from the dugout showed their support of their teammates.

“They have had a good year so far. They are up 8 and 0 so far in their regular season,” said Coach Allan Chase.

25th Annual East-West Carriage Trails

Combined driving competitors pushed through the rain on June 11 and 12 for the 25th Annual East-West Carriage Trials at the Vermilion Agricultural Grounds.

“The Carriage Trials are a way of appreciating the past,” said Ken Farkash.

Prince Phillip helped develop the rules for combined driving when it became recognized as a sport. Ideal times have been scientifically calculated based on the size of a competitor’s horse. This makes it the only local equine sport where miniature horses have a way of competing in

the same events as Clydesdales. There are also categories for 1 horse and pairs, 2 wheel and 4 wheel carriages, and levels of experience as a driver.

Twenty-three drivers registered to compete, where they drove courses in dressage, cones, and marathon.

“Combined Driving is an individual sport where you are competing against yourself and the clock,” said one of the course designers, Wayne Byers.

“It was awesome to see a number of junior competitors at this show,” said Shadow Technical Delegate Byron Crook.

“As compared to other rodeos or horse

shows, it’s nice to see different kinds of horses and a variety of ages competing at the same event,” said Fire Training Student, Adam Gallen from Langley, British Columbia, of his first experience volunteering at the Carriage Trials.

“The competition shows novice to more advanced or expert level. Watching, you can see how practice goes a long way,” said Fire Training Student, Justin Fraser from Toronto, Ontario, of his first experience volunteering at the Carriage Trials.

“We have five youth members driving this year, and three adult first-time drivers this year. We are very happy to see the

growth in our sport,” said Byers.

“We are appreciative of the many volunteers who braved the weather. Without their help, we would not be able to put on this show,” said Crook.

Byers added that Light Horse 4-H members, Fire Etc. students and others filled over 30 volunteer positions this year; and that they were pleased to be able to use once again the Vermilion Ag. Facilities.

“Interacting with the horses and meeting new people are my favourite parts of carriage driving,” said 12-year-old secondyear competitive driver, Sara Brewster from Breton, AB.
