The Dust was flying this past weekend at the High School Rodeo competition in Lakeland’s Equine Centre on May 14 and 15. The two-day rodeo event is part of the rodeos in

Grads 2016 Page 16-20

the Central Alberta district of the Alberta High School Rodeo Association. Aspiring young competitors worked to qualify for the provincial finals in June.

Local spectators attended to watch the activities in the high school competition and

to experience the rising young talent, some entered the 2 barrel racing jackpots on Saturday evening, presented by Lakeland College and the Vermilion Agricultural Society. The student’s ages varied from 14 and to 17.

Sixteen years after it first started serving the Vermilion Area, Diamonds for you is clearing out its merchandise. Last week, Owners Bob Ernst and Anne McMinis announced that they have decided to retire from the jewelry business.

The business and store name were originally Anne’s idea. “It all started 16 years ago, when there was no jewelry store in Vermilion, a friend of mine wanted to open a business in Vermilion. I said a jewelry store would be a good idea and she asked me what I would call the store, and I said ‘Diamonds for you’ so she called it ‘Diamonds for you’.

Five years later my friend wanted to get out of the business, she knew jewelry was a passion of mine, and she asked me if I would be interested in taking over

While Anne is ready to step back from the jewelry life, she says she’ll miss the store.

“We have enjoyed it tremendously the last 11 years. It’s sad to go,” said Anne. “We had the opportunity to share in special moments in people’s lives; moments that nobody else is able to share in. I have always had a passion for making sure an individual got the perfect gift that was most suited to that person.

“The economy has definitely affected the business the last 6 months but our reason for closing is more that we have come to the point in our lives where we have decided to retire from the jewelry business,” said Anne.

Bob says he thinks the secret to his business longevity is in providing exceptional service.

“It has been a privilege creating memories and highlighting the achievements of members of the community through our engraving business.

“It’s been a great run. I’ve really enjoyed working at the store. It has been a very enjoyable and rewarding part of my life,” said Bob. “It would be nice to continue engraving. I’m not sure at this time, but it could still be possible.”

The couple enjoys breeding Papillon, Norwegian Elkhound dogs, Sphynx cats and miniature ponies.

After 16 years, Diamonds For You will sell everything and close their doors.

Bob, who has always had an interest in cars and motorcycles, says that he looks forward to working on mechanical projects in his free time.

Anne says she looks forward to visiting a country close to her heart, Ireland.

“Ireland is a place that is close to my heart because of my heritage and both my mother and father are from there, I still have relatives living there.”

Bob and Anne have 4 children and 2 grandchildren. “This will give us more time to enjoy the outdoors, our animals and enjoy our children and grandchildren,” said Anne.

Long term employee, Anita Jaremco, has been working at the store for the past 13 years. “It’s a little sad that we are closing for sure,” said Anita. “It will be different.”

Anita said she has great memories from working at the store over the years especially selling jewelry to husbands at Christmas time. “It was funny. We would do everything and they would just say, yes that’s fine.”

Helping To Get Fort McMurray Moving Again

While most of the population fled the chaos and raging wildfires in Fort M c Murray last week, many other s stayed behind to help and play a role to try and get things moving again.

O ne of those people was Foun tain Tire Assistant Manager, Randy MacNab. M ac N a b, w h o i s or i g i n a ll y fr o m Vermilion, has been a resident of Fort McMurray for the past 8 years.

“We were evacuated on the Tuesday and we were called back on the Thursday to Fort McMurray to assist in changing tires for the fire department, police department, emergency rescue crews, towing Companies and whoever needed tires changing, we changed them.”

Many of the tires were damaged by hotspots on the power lines, and by nails and glass from all the debris.

Sleeping in a cot in the office with no power and eating at the food camps every night, MacNab describes the fire aftermath as unpleasant.

Museum Highlights Provincial Park’s History

This year the Vermilion Heritage Museum will be honouring the Vermilion Provincial Park.

“We will be providing displays featuring the Park’s history. We thought this would be something a little different.

The Park has been in existence since 1924. It is rich in history and a strong part of the community,” said Museum President, Jean Murie.

The Vermilion Heritage Museum takes you through decades of time in the park gone by, revealing Vermilion’s captivating history including the old CN Station and the flooding of the river.

The park was first constructed in the early 1950s, and opened to the

This year the Vermilion Heritage Museum will feature Conservation Officer Gary Walsh’s uniform from 1980 in their Park history display.

Gary has been an officer with Alberta Parks for the past 40 years and has been based in Vermilion since 1990.

“It’s amazing how far our Park has come to be where it is today, and it’s down to the great work of volunteers,” said Gary.

“That is the equipment we used back then, we had no weapons then, and that is what it looked like. The Park became a Provincial Park in the 50s, but people were using it before that. People naturally congregate to water. People water skied on the river and there used to be cabins along the river. The park is right on the crossroads between Highway 41 and 16.

Set A Goal And Runaway

The Lakeland Runaway has been operating races for over 30 years. This year there were 134 people registered from ages two to seniors in 2 km, 5 km, 10 km, and 21 km (half marathon) races.

Participants challenged themselves on the hills and curves of the course while enjoying the fresh air and view of the river valley.

This years’ race hosted one special foreigner, Bea Vermeyen of Oregan who is visiting local friends. Bea is 64-yearsold and legally blind. She ran 10km with no cane and no one running beside her; only having to be redirected by station volunteers a couple of times.

Vermeyen jokingly said, “If I had brought my cane, I could have used it to whack people!�

In some of her past runs, she has used a guide bicycle or teammate with radios to keep her running in the right direction. Vermeyen had been running 10km all week at 1 hour and 10 minutes, but

today her finishing time was 1 hour and 4 minutes, even after being redirected twice. Clearly the excitement of having competition spurred her on.

Vermeyen said, “I started running when my kids were little on a mountainside to stay active and have now raced with my children and grandchildren. I like running with music to set my pace and have been fortunate to have people make me playlists that fit particular racetracks.� “The key to running is, you’ve got to have a goal,� said Vermeyen She admits that her goals started out small, but over the years as she was encouraged to race further and faster, she accomplished some pretty challenging feats including Eugene, Oregon’s Olympic training grounds, and her granddaughter’s school track 114 times around where she raised $3500, and encouraged a 4 generation walk/run with her then, 85 year old parents. She has no plans to stop running anytime soon, and said the Great Wall of China is on her list of running goals.

Stupidity, Ignorance Or Just Don’t Care?

A f t e r t h e Fo r t Mac Fire, you would think people would at least try and be semi-careful during these extremely dry times, but apparently stupidity or ignorance takes over some human brains.

I personally do not know which it is, but it perturbs me beyond belief when I see people doing what some would think is just plain stupidity.

All of Alberta has been placed under a fire ban, and you still see people tossing their cigarette butts out the car window.

Now, I don’t know if they are locals to our area or not that I saw last week, and really that is not even an issue, the issue is how can people be so idiotic? Has no one learned that during these extreme dry times and at all times caution has to be taken?

May 11 at 6:00 p.m. fire conditions remain extreme in the province, with a total of 19 wildfires burning: two out of control, one is being held; 10 under control and six turned over to the responsible parties, and one new fire had started that day.

Also, there are currently 1,715 firefighters, 101 helicopters, 154 pieces of heavy equipment and 26 air tankers battling the fires. Two fires in the Fort McMurray area have joined and is now approximately 229, 000 hectares with 700 firefighters, 32 helicopters, 13 air tankers available and 83 pieces of heavy equipment units working on the Fort McMurray Fire. The wildfire is approximately 25 to 30 km from the Saskatchewan boundary.

These firefighters are sacrificing their time with their families and the possibility of their lives each day to fight fires which yes are often started due to weather conditions but are often started by human error as they like to call it. Personally, I would call it human stupidity. On average there are 1200 wildfires reported in Alberta each year, and half of those fires are caused by humans, according to the

National Fire Database. Lightning is the second - leading cause at 47%, so I think it’s time for us humans to start thinking about the damage we cause!

I am a smoker, and yes, we all do stupid stuff sometimes and not think before we act, but in this case, it is a pretty simple solution. If your vehicle doesn’t have an ashtray, buy one and sit it in your cup holder, or do like I do, there is always a bottle sitting in my cup holder with water or some other form of liquid in it that I very easily drop my cigarette butt in when finished.

We all have been talking about how dry it is out there. We all know about the fire bans which have been in place because of the danger of fires starting so easily.

We all know that one spark can cause a fire that can quickly and easily become out of control when our environment is this dry, and yet we still see people doing things which are completely against the realm of common sense; like tossing cigarette butts out their windows while driving down our highways. Haven’t we learned from even last week’s events that forest

Disasters do bring us together and Canadians prove over and over that we are a strong caring society. The affects of this disaster run deep and communities such as ours living with job loss, reduced

hours of work as a result of the economic downturn will also be further affected until the oil industry is able to recover from this devastating set back. As we reach out to feed, clothe, and support Fort Mac, please remember hunger continues and

fires are a force to be reckoned with; they have no thought process and they do not have the ability to care whether there is a town or city in front of them. They destroy everything in their path until subdued, so it goes back to the same ole thing, is it stupidity, ignorance or an inability to care that we still see people tossing cigarette butts out the bloody window as they drive on our highways and past our towns. I think it’s time to start being proactive. If you see it happening, and you are the passenger of the vehicle click a photo and report it, also the BC Government has considered impounding cars belonging to individuals who toss their butts out the window. Our bland and grey world turned a full, lush green almost overnight with previous moisture and a couple of warm sunny days, full leaves on our local natural trees like poplar or Aspen. There are still some trees that are slow bloomers in the tree world, but they will be lush soon also, the grass turned green and grew with such enthusiasm I’m sure you could literally watch it grow.

I spent mother’s day morning cutting the grass so momma could enjoy her apple and cherry trees in full bloom, these trees are absolutely a work of art in nature, so beautiful my wife spent the morning taken pictures of the bloom.

It was a beautiful sunny and clear weekend although most of us were praying for rain; although all of Alberta can use the rain we directed the prayers to the Fort McMurray fires, a disaster and great hardship for many.

As I mentioned several weeks ago on caution with fire safety, it was mentioned that off-highway vehicles can be a source of spark and wildfire, it is believed this was the cause of the fire, and there is an off-highway vehicle ban in all Alberta on

Dad was always very interested in skinning a coyote and in early years their value had been wonderful cash. My first fur money came from rabbit skins, that Dad showed me how to snare. The rabbits used to come to the greenfeed stacks and had a beaten track where they came through a page wire fence. A snare where they came through caught them and I seem to remember I got about eight cents for a skin. Seems the rabbits had some disease that made them dangerous to skin, but well for eight cents, I guess I thought it worth the risk. I remember the Wener Bros. smiling as they counted out the change. I first met a few of the neighbours when I hosted a garage sale to sell off some excess belongings along with the unwanted stuff left behind by the former owners of our house.

We’d bought from long term residents so it didn’t seem unreasonable that he stop by to assess the damage our arrival might bring to the neighbourhood. Despite his grumpy man demeanour, Bill seemed a good fella, at least until he cut down all the trees in his backyard and placed plastic chickens on the naked stumps remaining.

The Fort McMurray fire shows all of us how a wildfire can get dangerous and in a big hurry, it can also be very life threatening in many situations, although the Fort Mc Murray fire was tragic, it could have been much worse.

I found out that some of my relatives that lived in Fort McMurray made it out safely but only with the clothes on their back, no wallet, credit cards or cash, just what they were wearing.

Fort McMurray is my old hometown where I grew up from birth to my 20’s, an area that sparked [no pun intended] my interest and love for the outdoors, I also found out the part of town and the house, where I grew up, is a pile of ashes now. I have a lot of childhood memories there, mostly exploring, fishing and camping and pretty much everything in the outdoors, in the near 20 years I lived there, there were not this big or as threatening fire as this one. There were fires…always will be, but most were controlled and with modern

technology and a number of people in Alberta I don’t understand how this got so out of hand and in such a threatening hurry.

Most were evacuated with what they wore on the backs and had with them, most people who were at work were not allowed to go home, and so many pets were left to fend for themselves.

Personally, there wouldn’t be a chance in hell that I would have left my puppy Miss Oohohh to fend for herself…locked in a home they don’t stand a chance.

They would have had to shoot or hog tie me to stop me, only those of you who consider their close pets like cats and dogs, just like your very own children will understand that. I would risk my own life to save my pup, just as I would a family member or you, I have already risked my life for her as in the ice fishing incident, without thought, this would be no different.

Many that don’t own a dog or even a cat will not or may not understand that, but they are family members, and NO family gets left behind. Unfortunately, many pets perished in that fire. But, there were also many emergency personal that saved and rescued many animals, those brave souls should be recognised once this is all done and the carnage is over.

In early times before the Norway rat became a real threat, we were able to harvest the odd weasel and were paid up to about five dollars, which was a days wages back then. By my time they were protected as a means to make life tougher for any rodents, I guess, I never tried to harvest them as you simply couldn’t sell the skins unless you smuggled them to an area where it was legal.

We used to as kids comb the bushes around our farm hunting for crow and magpies as we were paid a bounty of five cents a pair, which we thought was a real bonanza! Imagine it took twenty pairs to make one dollar for miles of walking, climbing trees, and all the after school times and weekends to perhaps make a dollar!

Next animal on the list of money for the taking would be the lovely little muskrat that inhabited most of our sloughs and were easy to shoot and trap. The only joker there was trying to retrieve them out of the water without getting wet or maybe drowned! It was years before I got a retriever and that really made a big difference. Before that it was a chancy business with a long bamboo

binder whip with a big hook to try reaching from shore. Yes, you sure earned your beaver and muskrat pelts. Further to getting help from a retriever, I found out about snaring beaver under the ice and began a new method that brought such a change to the whole idea of fur gathering. Instead of fleshing beaver fresh they were stretched and scraped clean frozen in the winter and there was time to do the trapping in winter between chore times. I ended up with three dozen big conibear traps that took the beaver in a humane way. I learned from that experience to find a method of trapping muskrats under the ice too. There was a size of conibear that suited that job too.

I bought a nice little snow machine from my fur money and it really did expand the area I could trap!

I used the carcasses of the beaver to attract coyotes and even lynx to traps too. Yes, we even skinned a fox or two.

They weren’t too plentiful but very beautiful skins.

Mr. Welder’s yard displayed a collection of metal objects and formerly functioning appliances that made the rest of us especially grateful for tall fences. Do you know Tom Waits’ tune, ’What’s He Building in There’? Doug’s landscaping evokes that type of sentiment. I view it as a kind of cross between a massive sculpture-in-progress and...something else.

Of course, the life and souls of people are the priority and I would do everything in my power to help and aid these people, but I would be doing that with Miss Oohohh by my side. As mentioned many got out with only the shirts on their back, some lost everything, but…some were more fortunate, but all will be needing aid, and Alberta is coming through with outstanding generosity and aid.

All were from companies and normal people like you and me, our government both provincial and federal needed fires lit under their donkeys to take notice and do something, I hope Alberta takes notice of that.

I have donated funds to several programs for the cause and wish there was more I could do hands on, but every little bit helps, we all have to remember that natural disasters can happen anywhere in Alberta or the world for that matter.

Well, it seems somehow a mink got into a beaver house in the winter and ended up in a beaver trap.

At the time and old trapper friend, Herman Woodstra came to visit and stay a while. Well he welcomed the chance to show this young whippersnapper a thing or two and had at it. It was February and twenty degrees below zero Fahrenheit, with a bitter wind as I remember.

Well you start out at the back legs and then cut around the tender place under the tail. That’s where its scent glands are, and they didn’t stand any errant knife work. As it happened, the worst thing came to pass, and we had to vacate the house in the dead of winter. Yes, I’ll remember that smell a while!

I wonder sometimes what the rest of the folks say about us. I guess we fit in somewhere. We’re a varied lot who inhabit the houses on these streets.

Over many years, we’ve managed to coexist in relative peace. Neighbours come and go. The big trucker is gone now, taken by an aneurism. Remnants of his presence remain. The sign still declares that two old crows live there even though everyone knows it’s no longer true.

The F Yeah people had their own giant garage sale before they relocated to a senior’s condo facility. Pot smokers with a friendly dog live in the brown house now. They’re pretty quiet and seem to enjoy smoking on the front step, the reefer smoke wafting out into the street for the benefit of passersby.

Chicken man is gone too, not long after retirement is the word. Neighbourhoods shift and change, much like our own shadows on any passing ordinary day.

This is a creamy and cheesy potato casserole that pairs well with a meat loaf, sausages, pork chops or burgers and a fresh salad. It is the quintessential home-cooked comfort food. Company potatoes is a popular recipe that often uses cans of soup for the creaminess. This recipe will side step all the additives in canned soup and instead opts for the use of pure and simple ingredients. This is really an easy dish to make, and it is great for pot luck dinners.

I have found that some bags of hash browns have lists of over 25 ingredients

on the bag while others have very few. It is best to read the bag and select the bag of hash brown potatoes with the least ingredients. You can also hand chop potatoes into the hash brown size. I have made this with a cup and a half of chopped fresh spinach stirred in and it is excellent as well. If you don’t like dill, you can leave it out, but it does add a great flavour burst.

If you select old cheddar cheese instead of mild, you will have a cheesier flavour.

I am not sure why it is called company potatoes except that it tastes so good, you are sure to impress your guests. It probably goes back to the days when the best was saved for company, like don’t use those towels, they are for company, or don’t eat those cookies, they are for

company, and those slightly burnt ones over there...those are for you. Anyone who is old enough to have grown up in that era, when the best was saved for company and company was King, will understand. But don’t worry; you don’t have to wait for company to cook up a batch of these yummy potatoes.

As a Sgt. at one of my postings before retirement, I investigated a Forgery and the Uttering of a Forged Document. This is not a very “News Worthy” event but for the circumstance, I frequently kept myself involved in day to day investigations to keep my hand in the fray and relieve some of my guys of the routine & mundane tasks that are at the very least time consuming!

I had a gentleman come to the office with a complaint. This gentleman was a senior citizen with a very severe speech impediment and facial disfigurement.

After much deliberation, it was determined that this gentleman had been befriended by a woman of “Questionable Character.” She had won him over, and when the opportunity presented itself, she absconded with three cheques from the back of his cheque book.

In short order, the “lady” forged the three cheques and literally cleaned out the gentleman’s account.

My elderly gentleman victim friend soon realizes he has been victimized upon the receipt of his “Bank Statement.” He quite properly returned to his “Bank” to report he had been defrauded.

Clearly the signatures were forged as anyone would have clearly observed without any help form of Forensics.

The Bank quite properly advised the gentleman to report the offence to the RCMP. Thus, he immediately responded to my detachment.

I took the complaint, acquired the necessary evidence and initiated an investigation that resulted in the apprehension of the suspect. She was necessarily charged, appeared in court and indeed, entered a “Guilty Plea” to the offences of “Forger y” & “Uttering a Forged Document.” She received a

Now here is where it became a matter of considerable consternation for me.

In conjunction with her sentence; the convict was ordered to make restitution to the victim. As I recall, the sum was in the neighbourhood of $2800 which was every cent the gentleman possessed.

N ow, “ t h e Vi c t im ” g o e s bac k to the bank thinking his account will be adjusted to reflect a correction and a “Deposit” of approx. $2800 back into his account. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN! B e c au s e t h e c o u r t o r d e r e d t h e suspect to “make restitution” to the victim, the bank was absolved of having to refund the $2800 to the victim. My gentleman victim returns to my office quite distressed and wondering what he did wrong. I assured him he did nothing wrong. I try to reassure him and promise I will help him obtain restitution. This should be very easy to correct I am thinking! WRONG! I immediately call the bank and determine had the amount had been under $1000 they would have been able to handle the matter internally, and my victim would have received an immediate response, and the funds returned to his account! However, being over $1000; any settlement would have to be approved and come from the head office in Toronto.

I call “Head Office” in Toronto! I might just as well have been a telemarketer for the response I received. They were not interested in the plight of this poor man in any way shape or form. This from a bank that posted billions in quarterly earnings. I could not have been more disappointed or motivated. No amount of my concern or disappointment in this Institution could sway them. Go after the suspect for the restitution was their advice. You cannot get blood from a stone; so to speak!

When the onions are starting to soften add the cream cheese in slices and cover for a few minutes to soften. Stir in the sour cream. In a large bowl add 2 eggs, the salt, pepper, and the milk and wish to blend. Add the potatoes and the cheddar cheese. Stir in the onion cream cheese mixture. Pour into a 9 x 13 pan, cover with tin foil and bake at 350 degrees for 30 – 40 minutes.

I then called the Alberta Attorney General’s office. I suggest we return this matter to the appropriate court to have the “Restitution Order” amended.

“To have the suspect make restitution to the bank as opposed to the victim.” This is what originally should have occurred.

My request fell on deaf ears. It was over and done; move on!

I then called upon the U of A- Student Services Legal Dept. They will often take on cases Pro-Bono that is in the interest of social justice. Within an hour, they called me back and let me know there is nothing they can do for me and “Move On.” I am stymied! I am not going to be able to get Restitution for my Complainant & Victim. I feel I had let him down when he was looking to me for some Justice.

That very night; I am watching the “ National News” on T V which was followed by a show “Goldhawk Fights Back,” you folks my age will recall.

“Goldhawk” was a “Consumer Ombudsman” who received national attention in those days.

Next Day, I phone “Goldhawk Fights Back ” and relate my dilemma and circumstance. To suggest they were excited to intervene in this matter is an understatement! They were like a fat boy on a cookie!

They forwarded some paperwork to me that required the witnessed signature of our victim, which I eagerly witness and forwarded same back to Toronto.

Hours later I received a call back from “Goldhawk.”

The Bank had totally reconsidered their position and had credited my Victims Account with the absconded funds.

DAMN! I really like what I was able to do with that one. One of the best “Feel Good” moments I had ever experienced in 32 years of Policing!

Horse And Wagon Recycling

The Town of Camrose recently introduced a new way to reduce Green House Gas emissions, by replacing the recycle truck with work horses and wagons.

Larry Lievre and Trishaly Banack came up with the idea after they had problems with a broken-down recycling truck.

“Recycling is a huge part of protecting the environment for me and my family, and I have been doing this for almost 15 years,” said Larry Lievre, the owner of TK Environmental Curbside Recycling, a company that began picking up people’s recycling in 2002 and bringing it to the local depot.

“We kind of laughed about it at first and we thought about it and said, why not?!” said Larry.

As it is, Camrose does not have a company contracted to pick up materials to be recycled. It owns the depot and contracts out the recycling, but residents are required to get the material to the depot. The city is working on a new project to pick up organic waste to be composted and is providing bins this month for people to separate the waste.

“The campaign is very important to us because it will eliminate even more GHGs produced by waste collection trucks and even more from costly road maintenance.

By using Draft Horses to pick-up recycling instead of a truck, it will eliminate more than 14 Tons of Greenhouse Gases annually and get even more people to recycle. The horses are very much like people so, the health and safety of these animals is our highest priority.

“We want more people to recycle and they say the number one way to reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions is Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

“Today we have about 370 subscribers to our Curbside Service in Camrose representing about 3000 residents.

Saskatoon bushes are in full bloom at ‘Cruthers Berry Farm’, located just west of Lakeland College, Vermilion. Farm owner, George Cruthers said, “We’ve been in operation 15 years and are looking forward to another fruitful season.”

Cruthers’ experience with berries began at early age, as he grew up on a farm and picked them with his mother.

After driving truck for 31 years, he bought the land and thought it would be nice to plant saskatoons. “Being so close to town, I figured that it would work well as a u-pick business.”

His favorite part of the business is

the people. Cruthers said, “I love getting to visit friends old and new that stop by during the summer season, a luxury I didn’t get as much as a truck driver.”

Cruthers Berry Farm supplies u-pick saskatoons in large quantity and a few cherries, currants, and raspberries for a taste to clients within a 50 mile radius with some customers coming annually from as far as Lethbridge. Cruthers is a member of the Alberta Farm Fresh Producers Association.

“Though the season changes a bit with the weather, berries are usually ready for picking between July 1-15 and last until the end of July or the first week in August,” said Cruthers.

O n M ar c h 18 , t h e Ver m i l i o n 4H Sheep Club held its monthly meeting.

Members also had a Lambing 101 workshop, hosted by Blair Dow. Both activities took place at Lakeland College.

On April 15, they held another monthly meeting at the Ag So c iet y B oard room. Af ter the meeting, members took par t in a Nutrition Workshop.

On April 7, the Sheep Club had a tire recycling fundraiser at the Vermilion Regional Transfer Station. On April 16, the club had another tire recycling day, along with electronics. Both were par t of the clubs fundraising activities. If anyone ever has an access of old tires or electronics they are looking to get rid of, please let the Vermil-

ion 4H Sheep Club know!

On May 1, some par ticipants fro m Ver m ili o n S he e p Clu b, along with members from the surrounding communities, took part in a sheep workshop. Some of the things members learned throughout the day were how to build feeders, what to feed sheep, halter breaking method, and 5 freedoms for animals.

Betty Evans is a Kitscoty original.

Aside from a few years at Dawson Creek and a few at the University of Alberta for teaching, Evans has spent most of her 80 plus- years being a dynamic influence on the Kitscoty community.

In 1916, her father settled in Kitscot y where he managed and later ow n e d t h e G e n er al S tore. Evan s grew up the youngest of eight, and with not many other young people around, she said, “You had to use your imagination to entertain yourself! We spent time skating, tobogganing, camping under tarps and blankets until it rained, visiting at the elevator or railway tracks, anything to be involved.”

pitching in for sporting or community events to make it feel like we had the best of both worlds,” said Evans.

Dur ing her s c ho o l d ays, Evans looked up to music teac her Elsie Batty saying, “She required that we all participate in the choir where we had many enjoyable ex per ien c es including performing for community events and even attending provincial music festivals.” After schooling, Evans went on to teach for 17 years both in Vermilion and Kitscoty and later said, “I didn’t retire, I just got tired.”

Evans continues to be active in the community by taking part in the se s s i o n an d c h o ir at her c hur c h, being a member of the Central East Retired Teachers Association, being the chairperson of the Kitscoty and D i s tr i c t C o m m u n i t y a n d S e n i o r ’s Association, and volunteering at Kitscoty Elementary School.

Evans said, “I also love being a member of the local drama group, floor

curl twice a week, and am currently on a walking challenge. I love singing and enjoying life in general, but I especially love dancing. I believe the comradery of a small community is what makes it great!”

Evans was an honorary chair for Relay For Life in 2011. Having been a widow since 2000, and a breast cancer survivor since 2002, Evans is still on the farm and driving. With her family close by and supportive, she undertakes all her own housework, g ar d ening, an d bak ing an d of ten h ost s lar g e am ount s of c o m pany from near and far. “ The secret of keeping it all together is that you have to keep a sense of humour!” said Evans.

Currently, Evans enjoys spending weekly visits with her great-grandchildren, spoiling them with hearty meals and fresh baked bread. Passing on her exuberance comes naturally when spending time with family and friends in the community.

Midget Lacrosse Tuesday, May 10, local lacrosse players who have joined the Midget Wainwright Wolfpack this season, battled the Cold Lake Heat at the Vermilion Stadium. Vermilion players include Austin Horpstead (A), Mark Languin, Tobius Olinger, and Gord Uddin (C). Also joining the team is Levi Young of Kitscoty.

“This was only their 3rd game together so the boys are just starting to come together as a team. It will take time getting used to the different coaching style and new game plays.

However, they are enjoying the coaching staff and are excited for the season ahead to learn new things and create new friendships,” said an onlooker.

Alex Haditaghi Friday, April 30 th , not only marked another special event for Dewberry School but it became a milestone marker for three students: Vale Fluney, Steven Manchen and Brandon Whitney. These students were the stars of the evening as they sat center stage and celebrated their successes as this year’s newest graduates.

Trustee Lanie Parr congratulated the class and reminded them to use their school experiences as tools to become successful. She gave them some sound advice: “never stop growing your mind and always put your best, most sincere effort into whatever you do”. This group of students have already begun to do just that, both Brandon and Steven have completed their first year apprenticing and all three have been part of the work world for several years.

MLA Dr. Richard Starke was honored to “share in a true celebration”. He said that it doesn’t matter the size, the major milestone is the same. He referred to our greatest natural resource as being our human resources, our youth! He mentioned that there is tremendous potential and that Alberta is a great place to go out and reach that potential. Our graduates definitely are reaching for that potential and this will lead them towards great adventures.

how special it is to graduate from a small school and that the small school environment makes the experience more personal. The small school environment combined with the small class size is what made this class unique.

Principal Curt Orbeck was extremely proud to celebrate in the great accomplishments of these three Amigos!! He spoke fondly of them and encouraged them to think of life as a choice. He stressed for them to be positive by design, not negative by default. These students have demonstrated this positive attitude with what they’ve accomplished this far into their next phase of life. As Mr. Orbeck said, they’ve accomplished more before they graduated than many do in a life time.

Although high school has ended, this group will find a way to continue on their journey of life. They are now beginning a new chapter in their lives and as Plato once said, “the beginning is the most important part of the work.” We are proud of the Class of 2016 and wish you the best of luck on any beginnings you may initiate.

THELMA MARY DAVIES

August 19, 1963 – April 27, 2016 A sister, an aunt, a godmother, a mentor, and a friend has left us.

Thelma grew up on the family farm south of Dewberry. Her first job at Vermilion’s renowned Craig’s Department Store bloomed into a career in vehicle service, sales, and management.

Thelma's exceptional work ethic made her family proud beyond words.

She adored cars, quads, camping, baseball, hockey, and helping out at her brothers' farms.

But most importantly, Thelma was warm, caring, and loyal. She had an unwavering love for her friends and family, and would drop everything in a heartbeat for them.

With such traits, it would be a disservice to her memory not to acknowledge the sheer fortitude Thelma demonstrated her entire life – a resolve that we can only aspire to.

Thelma is predeceased by her sister Joan Martin (nee Davies) and her parents Ernie and Mary Davies.

Thelma leaves behind her brothers, Alan (Sandra), Ralph (Iris), and Vernon (Ruth Shaw) Davies, her sister Norma Mosley (née Davies), her many nieces and nephews, and her two Siamese cats, Tooie and Ty. As per her request, no funeral service will be held.

We love her, and miss her, and hope she’s found the happiness she’s always deserved.

O n S u n d a y, M a y 1, the Grade 12 class along with Mr. MacMillan and Mrs. McCormack packed on the bus and headed to Camp Encounter for the Grad’s two-day retreat. The weather was amazing and the memories made will last forever. The students played a lot of their favorite game, “Keepity-Uppity”, as well as participated in canoeing – some students saw more of the lake then others, and the challenge course. They were engaged in a number of activities that had them reflecting on the journey they had been on already and where their journey will take them. The students also took time to think about their faith and the people who have helped them along their journey, parents, friends, classmates, teachers and other special people. After two days of fun, great food, team building, and memory making retreat ended with the infamous game on the Island.

A large turn out of parents gathered to be entertained by the kindergarten students for Happigrams on Thursday, May 5. They performed the play, “Hettie and the Fox”, played rhythm sticks, and ended with the song, “Jesus is His NameO”. They did a fabulous job with clear, loud voices and they were very entertaining. Congratulations to all the month’s Happigram winners for working so hard all month.

May 16 School News The collaboration of various entities in the community really contributes to the enhancement of our students’ education. Recently, “It Can’t Happen to Me” can’t happen without the help and work of Prairie EMS, Vermilion RCMP, Vermilion Fire Department, Lakeland Funeral Home, Alberta Health Services and Boston Pizza hosting the event. The event, held every year for Grade 9s, was a success yet again. Also, special thanks also go to Buffalo Trail Public Schools for supplying buses for students to attend Try-A-Trade in Lloydminster.

On April 21st, 2016, the grade 6 class visited the Alberta Legislature Building in Edmonton, AB. The students had a great trip as they participated in a Mock Legislature and experienced first hand how bills are made. The history and architect of this remarkable building had many students in awe. A HUGE THANK YOU to Dr. Richard Starke for his introduction during session. The students witnessed firsthand how Question Period occurs. This trip was a wonderful experience and all the students had an opportunity to learn and see something new.

May is an extremely busy month at St. Jerome’s. High School Student Council elections will take place on Thursday, May 19. Track and Field Competitions for Jr. and Sr. High take place throughout the month. The St. Jerome’s Jr. High Track Meet is on Tuesday, May 17. May 18 is the Spirit Trip for the Grade 9-12 students. The Grade 11’s have retreat May 9 and 10 and Grade 10 go to ASLC at the end of the month. There is no school on Friday, May 13, Friday, May 20 and Monday, May 23. Graduation events will take place from Thursday, May 26 to the day of Grad, Saturday, May 28. Grade 10 students finish up their courses and write finals before they head off to college for the month of June.

May 16th School News The talented students of St. Jerome’s entertained the staff and students with a variety of abilities on Thursday, May 12.

Comedy, singing, opera, dancing, hoola-

hooping, and violin were some of the talents shared. We are very proud of all of our students and the unique gifts that make each one of them so very special.

St. Jerome’s Student Council have been encouraging the community of St. Jerome’s to help with the relief fund for Fort McMurray. In one week they were able to collect close to $2000, which will be donated to the Red Cross. Way to go St, J! The total amount will be finalized next week.

The Grade 9 students have been busy participating in a variety of activities for their CTS Environmental/Forestry Class.

They have been collecting bottles, collecting scraps from classrooms for composting, and encouraging elementary students to think of ways to be Earth friendly. Last week they went to the Vermilion Provincial Park and had Conservation Officer, Gary Walsh, take them on a tour. He pointed out different types of trees, various types of bark, and how different types of trees/ plants got their names. The students were able to take a core sample from a tree to try to count the rings to discover the age of the tree. It was a beautiful educational and fun filled morning in the park. The Field Trip ended with the students playing a trust game and then rolling down the hill old fashion fun style. Thank you to Mrs. Elphick-Woodbury for organizing this great event.

The Grade 11 class had their two-fun filled days of Retreat at Camp Encounter last week. They left early Monday morning and spend the next two days building great memories with their classmates, playing wide games, reflecting on their life journey, eating great food, and enjoying life. Grade 10 Leadership students are still completing their projects. Austin Patry and Walter Schumacher showed appreciation to our wonderful bus drivers last week as they gave a thank–you letter and a box of Timbits to each driver. Kayla, Callie, and Abigail taught a variety of games to our elementary students for their Leadership Project. The students had a blast playing the popular “Sandal Game”, racing each other during “Potato Sack Races” and participating in a non-stop Tag game.

Thank you to Father Bill and the community of St. Olga’s church for hosting us for our May mass. It is always a pleasure to attend St. Olga’s as they treat us as very special guests. The students enjoy the atmosphere of the church with the icons, and alter. Father Bill’s message of the importance of feeding our soul by attending mass and keeping our hearts open to the presence of Jesus was important for all to hear. The students also appreciate the treats after church of doughnuts and juice. Thank you, St. Olga’s, for welcoming us to your church.

The Hot Lunch Society put on its annual breakfast o n A pr il 29. We would like to thank all those who came out to support this awesome cause. We would also like to thank the volunteer firefighters for their tremendous help.

The Northeast 4-H Specialist, Shelly Ann Dodgson, visited our Grade 4 classes, teaching students about the Classroom Agriculture Program. Topics included irrigation, crops, and occupations involving agriculture. Students were surprised at some of the products made using agricultural products. They learned that canola is a “made up” word from Canadian and Oil. May 2-6 was Education Week. Music Monday took place on Monday, the students participated in DEAR (Drop Ever y thing And Read) on Tuesday, Wednesday was Hats On For Mental Health, Thursday’s activity involved math and physical education, and Friday was our Spring Concert.

On May 2, musicians across Canada united in song for Music Monday. At 11:00 our time, “We Are One” was sung and played throughout our great country. VES joined forces with St. Jerome’s elementary students and sang in the tennis cour ts between our schools.

Afterwards, the students had the opportunity to play together in the playgrounds for about half an hour.

Our AR Assembly occurred on May 3. Our VES choir started the assembly by leading us in our VES song. Mr. Neil Blue and Corporal Corey Buckingham presented to the five winners of the rural crime watch poster contest: Jennalee MacDonald, Olivea Dar y, Shannon Hughes, Chloe Maxwell, and Britney Yarmuch. Chrysti Mannix, BTPS Director of Transportation, presented a gift to the school bus safety poster contest winner, Sumiah Prill. Kindergar ten performed “Mind Your Manners”. The total AR points to date equals 18 915.

The Alberta Teachers’ Association and the Canadian Mental Health Association, with support from Global Television, are raising awareness of the mental health of children and youth. They asked schools to relax their hat rules on May 4 and to encourage students to show support for mental health awareness by wearing a fancy fedora or a charming chapeaux to school. Many staff and students in our school responded positively to this, as there were hats galore.

Our annual Spring Concert took place on May 6. Miss Leggette and Ms. King worked on their TES Team Days throughout the school year to put on a concert that involved some of the virtues that VES has been studying. The concert, entitled ‘Virtuosos’, was very well attended, and we would like to thank all those who made our day a special one.

May 16 School News For the month of May, we are focusing on the virtue of Citizenship and cele-

brating the Citizenship projects we have already participated in this year. It is amazing how much our students have already shown caring about others in our school, community & beyond while contributing positively to the environment. Some examples include: Terry Fox Walk - $357; Kiva - $295; Purple Pinkie Day - $720; Teddy Bear Toss – six big bags; Christmas carolling around town; 20 school patrollers; keeping our environment clean; Operation Christmas Child – 75 shoeboxes; Soup Can Drive – 266 cans for local food bank; We Scare Hunger – 2 overflowing truck loads of food; sending cheer to hospital patients for 15 weeks; assemblies highlighting virtues; showing gratitude on Remembrance Day; visiting extended care and lodge residents; Jump Rope for Heart $6256 for Heart and Stroke. Thank you for all your support in these ventures.

When students and staff at Vermilion Elementary School heard about the devastation going on in our neighboring Alberta community, immediately they started thinking about ways that they could be of service. Together, students and staff decided to raise awareness and show support by wearing red for a day and also by raising funds. Our school raised $6,042.26 in a variety of ways to donate to the Red Cross to support the Fort McMurray community.

Collection boxes at our Spring Concert and Drive 4UR School events drew in $1,022.75. Our Grade 3 students raised $654.26 by selling freezes for a dona-

tion to students and staff. Two sisters, one in kindergarten and one in Grade 5, set up a lemonade stand and raised $365.25 to add to our school’s funds.

Ford donated about $4,000 to match the funds that we raised in our Drive 4UR School event that our community came out to support. Our goal is that in some small way our efforts positively impact others who are going through this difficult time.

Grade 1 students experienced practising the virtue of citizenship when they visited the Vermilion Valley Lodge on May 10. They had fun helping the residents dig up and prepare their flower beds for planting. After wards, they enjoyed a freezie treat for all their hard work.

On May 10, BTPS Trustees Jim King and Bernie Huedepohl were in our school talking with the three Grade 6 classes about the school board and their role as trustees. The Grade 6 students had compiled a number of questions to have answered by the two board members during their visit.

A total commitment is paramount to reaching the ultimate in performance. - Tim Flores (NFL coach) It has been quite a remarkable few weeks for Dewberry School’s senior high badminton players. They’ve shown what total commitment means as they produced magnificent results in their tournaments, then mastered them at zones in Lac La Biche. The following players received medals at zones: Gold - Hailey Fanjoy & Kyle Kjenner (mixed doubles) and Kenedi Wood (singles); Silver – Daneca Goldsmith & Kyra Weidmark. Congratulations go out to these students as they head off to Edmonton for provincials! Good luck!

Outside of the school environment a few girls are making waves in the volleyball world. They all headed out to Saskatoon for the heated competition at the provincial (Saskatchewan) level. Jacy Soloy, Jenna Bowman, Jace Weidmark and their tier II U15 Rustlers teammates played some fabulous volleyball and smashed their way to a bronze medal finish! Nicole Dennill and her tier I U15 team placed 6th overall. Way to go girls!

During the school’s monthly citizenship awards, local bus drivers: Sharon Bates and Larry Bensmiller were acknowledged for the valuable part they play in the lives of our students. They were invited to the ceremonies and presented with a token of appreciation for managing to safely transport the students to and from school and the numerous events they attend.

To celebrate Education Week, Fractured Fairy Tales, talents and passion projects were the focus of Wednesday’s Showcase.

With fairy godmothers walking off the job, to a little pig smashing down wolves’ houses and even cheetahs cheating to win a race, elementary students performed their readers theatre productions to a T! Daneca Goldsmith graced our stage, not once but three times in separate dance performances, two of them with her spectacular dance group from Shape Studio. The evening also showcased some wonderful skipping talents from two elementary skipping teams. The guests got the chance to taste test the marvelous goodies prepared

by Mrs. Zayac’s junior high Food Studies class. The evening would not have been complete without the amazing talent of our

resident school rapper, Mayo, a.k.a. Keagan Rewuski. What an amazing evening! There was no doubt left in anyone’s mind about the fantastic ability of these students. We can’t wait to see what they have planned for us next year!!

Vermilion 4-H Baking Club Year End Report

The Vermilion Baking Club had a very adventurous year. This year our theme was 30 minute meals. We made; Breakfast Tostado’s, Mini Quiches, Broccoli Cheddar Soup, Sloppy Joes, Truffles, and Baking Powder Biscuits. This year our club consisted of Ryley Yetman as President, Shane Newberry as Vice President, Ainsley Zayac as Treasurer, ZiQi Shang as Secretar y, Victoria Newberr y as District Representative, Julie Newberry as Reporter, Noah Newberry and Kyle Hanlon as Full members.

Our Achievement day was held April 25th. We did a “Chopped” Style competition. Some of Our ingredients included Cream Cheese, Peppers, Celery, Ham, Blueberries, and Macaroni. The juniors had to make 1 plate or meal to be judged.

Our Judge was Janet Kerr. In first place we had Victoria Newberry. In second we had Noah Newberry, and in third we had Kyle Hanlon. Our Intermediates had to make 2 plates or meals. In first place we had Shane Newberry. In second place we had Julie Newberry, and in third we had Ryley Yetman. We also had our proj-

ect books judged. For the intermediates, Julie Newberry got first and second went to Shane Newberry. For the junior project books first went to ZiQi Shang, second was awarded to Ainsley Zayac, and third went to Victoria Newberry.

For our main Community Ser vice project, we went to the Valley Lodge at Christmas time and sang carols. We also handed out Truffles, which our club made the night before. The seniors seemed to enjoy that very much. We also had a small toy drive for The Ronald McDonald House in Edmonton, which we delivered January 25.

This year our lead er was Dawn Newberry, and our Project Leader was Susan McCaferty. One of the most important things I learned this year was while I was taste testing the truffles; There is such a thing as too much chocolate.

Our club will restart again in September, and is open for youth ages 6 – 19.

Innisfree Minburn 4-H Beef Club News

The Innisfree Minburn 4-H Beef Club has had a busy spring. With the warm days members have started additional work with their calves. Brushing winter hair out, leading and showmanship work are all in preparation for our annual show and sale.

Members held their Mock Achievement Day May 10 and it was great to see the calves being led around. The members had a grooming and showmanship demonstration by Kaylie & Laramie Anderson and had a chance to judge 4 stall mate calves.

It was a great opportunity to get the calves ready for the upcoming show.

The 51st Annual Achievement Day Show and Sale is Wednesday, May 25 at the Minburn Ag. Grounds (by the curling rink).

The Show starts at 2 pm with the Steer and Heifer classes. The members have been working hard all year and this is a great opportunity to show how far their calves have come.

Seeding Time A Week Ahead Of Schedule Grain Farmer, Gary Wright, from south of Vermilion, said last week that the conditions are a lot better this year than last year. “The ground is moist. The winter left earlier this year and it feels like we had an early spring.”

Freshly seeded fields were a common sight outside Vermilion last week.

“It’s dry, we need rain,” said another farmer from Mannville. “Most people have peas and wheat in and are starting on canola. We had frost the last couple of nights which may have hurt any canola that is up. For the most part farmers are about a week ahead of schedule.”

‘Spring Classic’ Soccer Riya McCagherty leads a break away during the Vermilion Soccer Association’s ‘U8 And U10 Spring Classic’ Tournament on May 14. McCagherty’s team the Vermilion Blue Wolves played the Wainwright Green Machine for their last of three games with a final score of 8-3 for Vermilion. An onlooker said that both teams played well and gave their all.

The ‘Spring Classic’ Tournament hosted teams from Bonnyville, Elkpoint, Mundare, Provost, Vegreville, Vermilion, and Wainwright. Each team played three games and players received a medal along with a free hotdog and drink. There were approximately 370 players in total and 13 young referees working at the tournament to gain experience.

Rising Volleyball Star

6’4” Outside Swinger, Matthew Pulyk recently received ‘The Most Improved Player Award’ playing for his college volleyball team at King’s University Eagles this season.

Pulyk is currently studying Bachelor of Arts with a major in Psychology and a Minor in Physical Education. After being recruited in Grade 12, he received a scholarship. The scholarship helps cover the cost of rent and books.

Matthew played on the St. Jerome’s Volleyball team that won the Provincials in 2014.

“I got involved in volleyball playing with the school team at St. Jerome’s.”

It was Pulyk’s first year to play on the college team, which is made up of students from 1st to 5th year.

“When school is in, we train 6 days per week. I think you make friends for life playing a college sport, just because you are with them 6 days a week. It opens up a lot of doors,” said Pulyk.

“My High School Coach, Mr. Al Rogan,

he was a big part of me going on to the next level. He coached college for a number of years and helped me get recruited.

“It’s a big mental game, more than anything. We touched on a bit on sports psychology in the first year of my course, and you learn how to control your mind in stressful situations during a game and how to stay poised. The big thing is learning how to move from one thing to the next without getting frustrated,” said Pulyk.

Matthew said he applies what he learns in the classroom in his game and isn’t ruling out the possibility of one day going professional.

The young player said he aspires to go into a career in physical education and counseling. “Right now the plan is to get my Masters and hopefully be a counselor one day, working in a sports field.”

The Kings Eagles Team made it to Provincials last season but were knocked out before the finals.

“We have the players to do it; we just need to get to that next level of playing.”

Vermilion Wellness Coalition Families enjoyed an afternoon of mini golf as well as frisbee golf and golf lessons provided by the Vemilion Wellness coalition on May 13. The free activities provided good incentive for people to get outdoors and enjoy the spring sunshine.

Since 2011, the Vermilion Wellness Coalition, has been implementing initiatives to promote healthy living, continually partnering with a variety of community agencies. Their team consists of representatives from the Town of Vermilion, Alberta Health Services, a Mental Health Capacity Building Project, Be Fit for Life & Alberta Tourism, Parks & Recreation. ‘Young Farm Worker Safety Training’

Students in the region who attended were able to gain practical knowledge and experience on a variety of safety measures. Agriculture for Life, the Alberta government and Lakeland College provided presentations on fire extinguishing by Neil Snelgrove, ag-chemicals by Syngenta, farm electricity by ATCO Electric, ATV safety by CanSafe, farm machinery by Rocky Mountain Equipment, equine safety by Tammi Etherington, and cattle safety by Geoff Brown. Lunch was provided by the Vermilion Ag Society.
