The Lakeland Regional Skills Canada Competition, hosted by Skills Canada Alberta, brought young people together, from Vermillion and surrounding areas, to compete in a variety of skills on April 22.

Local post-secondary students tested their skills competing in auto service, baking, cabinet making, carpentry, culinary arts, hairstyling (junior and intermediate), TV and video production, and welding.

“Students gain an appreciation for where their skills can take them,” said Skills Canada Provincial Coordinator, Gord King. “And by taking their skills out of the traditional classroom setting, we encourage students to reach for their personal best. Students who place at the RSCC will compete in the Provincial Skills Canada Competition in May.” Regional Skills Canada Competitions (RSCC) connects students to local post-secondary and industry leaders.

C a r p e n t r y Pr o g r a m H e a d , C u r t i s Cassibo said that he has seen many students who have competed in the Regional Skills Competition in the past come through the trades programs in Lakeland College.

“It’s a great day out for students to be able to tour through the college and see what is available here, it’s an experience that they wouldn’t get otherwise,” said Cassibo.

“The students who have the most interest tend to succeed a bit more. We have scholarship opportunities. If they make it past the Regional’s; they are in with a chance to win a $500 scholarship at the Provincials,” added Skills Canada Provincial Coordinator, Gord King.

Town of Vermilion Councillor Clint McCullough stopped in at the Regional Skills Competition at Lakeland College on April 22. “It’s great that we are able to host this and feature the talents o f A l b e r t a’s t r a d e a n d te c h n o l o g y students,” said Councillor McCullough.

Presentation ceremonies were held af ter wards in the Lakeland College Theatre, where the winners were awarded first, second and third places.

Total Image Natural Foods Shut Doors After 25 Years

Total Image Natural Foods owners, and long time residents of Vermilion, Elaine and Warren Gill, revealed last week that their business will be closing its doors; not due to the current economic downturn, but to retire and spend more time with friends and family.

Total Image Natural Foods began in 1991 as Total Image Health and Fitness and over the years have added more and more vitamins, herbs, and natural health

products.

“We started off many years ago as a diet centre franchise, and people kept asking for alternative health products,” said Elaine.

“I have loved working in the health foods industry,” said Elaine Gill. “I hope that we have helped a lot of people with their natural health needs. It has been something that is in my blood. My grandmother worked with a native medicine woman, and that had a big influence on me.”

It was Elaine’s idea to start the business 25 years ago. Although sales have

declined, the Gills say the Natural Food Store is still a viable livelihood.

“We felt the economic slowdown over the last few years, but there is certainly still a market for this business,” said Elaine.

“You really need to know the products, knowledge is key.

“Our focus is prevention, rather than fixing the problem after it has happened, which is what modern medicine does.”

Warren worked as the general manager at the Vermilion Eastalta Co-op for 30 years, before he retired and began helping

Elaine run the business.

“Hopefully, this retirement will last longer than the last one,” laughs Warren.

Warren says he looks forward to landscaping on his acreage and would like to take a trip to Vancouver Island. Elaine and Warren have three children and one grandchild.

Total Image Natural Foods store, offering 2,000 square feet, is currently up for sale and the store will officially close on May 31. An in-store sale will start on April 25 with 25 % off everything.

Walking The Walk As A Healthy Caregiver

Caregivers who attended the Compassion Fatigue Workshop at the Vermilion Regional Centre on April 18 learned symptom awareness and were given tools to refresh and renew their roles as caregivers. Compassion Fatigue Educator, Bill Harder said, “There is a cost to grief and bereavement work.” Unfortunately, circumstances in caregiving roles can lead to compassion fatigue instead of just seeing the rewarding results of providing aid for others.

Harder included that symptoms of this traumatic experience could range from exhaustion, insomnia, and migraines, to a weakened immune system, nausea, intestinal issues, and fainting. People who have developed compassion fatigue may have also experienced increased alcohol or drug consumption, anger or irritability, an impaired ability to make decisions, problems in personal relationships,

negative self-image, depression, and a reduced ability to feel sympathy, in turn causing compromised care for others.

Learning strategies to maintain well being in caregiving roles was the priority of all who attended the Compassion Fatigue Workshop. “There were 88 people registered from all types of caregiving roles, both personal and professional; including family members, school staff and health care providers from Vermilion, Wainwright, and Lloydminster,” said Regional Centre Coordinator, Carol Coleman.

Harder encouraged them to examine what physical, psychological, emotional, spiritual, and workplace choices they were making or accepting in order to determine how they were doing with their own self care. Participants were challenged to make a commitment to improve the level of care they gave themselves in order to care better for others.

Harder recommended that to become

more resilient and to thrive instead of exist; they should commit to exercise, take mini-breaks, do something creative, re-schedule and delegate things, adjust their diet, listen to their compassionate voice self-talk, and do one thing for themselves eac h day. They were also reminded that laughter is the best stress reducer!

VES Kindergarten Hatch Chicks It takes 21 days for a chicken to hatch. Every day the students from VES Kindergarten put an X on the calendar, counting down the days as they wait for their chickens to hatch.

VES Kindergarten teacher, Jessica Heinrich said that her students are very excited about the chicks that will be hatching soon in their classroom.

“The lady who gave us the eggs came into class and did a demonstration where she held a torch up to the egg so we could see the chickens growing inside the eggs,” said Miss Heinrich. Photos Marie Conboy

Vermilion Rotary Club Integrity Awards

The Vermilion Rotary Club gathered April 17 at the Vermilion Senior’s Centre for the Integrity Awards Ceremony. Since 2001, The Vermilion Rotary Club has rewarded citizens who are not Rotary members but have earned the respect and admiration of the board by their outpouring acts of integrity throughout the community. The recipients must be recognized as people who tell the truth, are fair in their dealings with others, have taken the time to build goodwill and continuing friendships and, who have tried in their interactions with others, to set and achieve goals of common benefit. The personal character and contributions of recipients were reviewed and appreciated as to how these people make the community a better place in which to work, play, and live.

This year’s winners were Brian Chrisp and Pat Calyniuk. The recipients of this award received a commemorative plaque, and the Rotary Club made a $200 donation to the Rotary Foundation in their name to continue the fight to end

Polio.

Having been active and cheerful in the community led Brian Chrisp to be one of this year’s recipients. He has bred some of the top purebred Charolais cattle in North America on his ranch, Misty Hills Charolais. His cattle have roamed the pastures of some of the best beef operations in the three western provinces.

Chrisp had also been a 30-year member of the Vermilion Ag. Society and has played an instrumental role in the planning and work it has taken to make the Vermilion Fair the success it is today.

He has also promoted the practice of holistic farm management in his involvement with the Devon Group. Aside from the attentive care towards his animals, he has always taken the time to visit and joke with those he was working or volunteering with and has never hesitated to share his smile around the community.

After acquiring her Masters in Social Work Pat Calyniuk began with Alberta Health Ser vices and later, became the Family School Liaison and a VIBE (Vermilion is Being Empowered) Coordinator; which is a Mental Health Capacity

Building Program for children. Through VIBE, she headed the anti-bullying campaign that has spread through schools and workplaces around the community. Pat has also organized the Breakfast for Learning Program at J.R.

Robson School. She became a Lions Club Member and maintained several other volunteer positions while embodying a passion for healthy relationships, academic success, physical health, and societal health.

Administrative professionals are the magicians within the office; they make the office run like a well-oiled machine, without them a business can come to a screeching halt.

From corporations to small businesses they depend on their administrative professionals to complete a wide variety of tasks such as; writing business correspondence, developing and keeping paper and electronic filing and conducting research on and offline. They create and maintain databases, schedules for managers and executives as well as maintaining calendar systems for individuals and departments. They are often required to look after the ordering of office supplies and maintaining inventory levels as well as buying office equipment, answering and handling telephone calls, preparing

reports, planning and coordinating meetings and events, making travel arrangements and so much more.

The administrative assistant is often the first person to meet and greet your clients; they are the face of your business and require special skills to represent your business in a polite and positive manner.

Some professionals are not trained through college but are trained within the organization where they work. Does this make them any less of a professional?

Absolutely not.

As a business owner, can you imagine entering your place of business and not having your administrative staff there to complete all the tasks required of them each day? Can you imagine with your already busy schedule having to complete all the tasks your administrative professionals complete for you?

Some corporations take for granted the importance of their support staff and do not realize the amount of work they complete on a daily basis. Administrative

professionals are crucial for a successful business, as they are taking on more and more responsibility within the workplace, including leadership roles.

The role of an administrative professional is extremely stressful since much of the workload and running of the office is placed upon their shoulders. It is important to remember that no one person can always handle the stresses that come along with the position. Most administrative professionals strive for perfection in the tasks they complete. They often take work home with them mentally. They think about the tasks which may not have been completed during the day and tasks which may come up for them the next day or even for the week. I have worked in administrative positions and know from personal experience how stressful the role can be.

Administrative Professionals week which is observed in many different countries and is designed to give employers the opportunity to celebrate and show

appreciation for all the hard work their administrative employees complete each day.

This week is Administrative Professionals week with the official day being held on April 27 so take the opportunity to show your professional staff how much they are appreciated.

Take the time to tell your support staff how much you appreciate the hard work they do. It does not have to be anything expensive, perhaps a small gesture to show them how you feel. The general rule of thumb is flowers, or a nice lunch or gathering to celebrate them. We have to remember not all administrative staff are women nowadays. More and more men are filling these positions, and for some reason I am thinking flowers may not be the way to go, however, I could be wrong.

I think most people do not expect a huge party or get together, and I think the most important part of the day is just to say thank you. A thank you can speak volumes.

Both individuals remain in custody and are scheduled to appear in Alberta provincial court via Closed Circuit Television.

Dry Conditions Cause Fires in Minburn Two fires got out of control south west of Minburn and west of Innisfree on April 18. Mannville Fire Department answered the call, and together with the local farmers and member of the community, the fires were put out.

A member of the Mannville Fire Department said that it took a total of nine hours to extinguish the Minburn fires.

The County of Vermilion River issued a PARTIAL fire ban, which was put into effect on 12:00 noon, April 8.

Only recreational and incinerator fires are permitted. These recreational and incinerator fires must be contained, supervised and fully extinguished upon completion. All other fires are banned and all previously issued permits are cancelled for the duration of the fire ban.

Failure to follow conditions of fire permits and fire bans will result in a minimum penalty of $500.00. Photo Diarmuid Dalton

Wholly heat wave… ha ha…I will take it over three feet of the white stuff and not complain.

However, it was so hot working the weekend in plus 20 C or higher temperatures in the sun.

We were at the cabin again building the garage, well, to be exact, setting up forms and laying drain water pipe etc. and getting ready to pour the entire floor and wall footing in one pour.

The cabin I’m sure is situated on a mountain of sand; after all, we are right next to the Sand Dune Ecological Area…a natural preserve.

Sand is a lot like water it reflects the sun like mirrors. It always seems much hotter there because of this, and probably is.

There wasn’t a cloud in the sky and the sun was relentless the entire day, and we worked a full day. We made sure everyone had a cold bottle of water at all times and one young fellow had to stop due to an extreme headache, a sign of heat exhaustion combined with lack of water and salt in body that is a side effect of heat exhaustion. A person can sweat or perspire without noticing it on a hot day even in the shade, and can lose a liter and a half of body fluids or water just through perspiration.

As a person loses body fluids, the salt content of the body is depleted as well. The loss of body salt alone can cause symptoms such as nausea, dizziness and the worst muscle cramps; that combined with lack of body fluids or water intake can lead to heat exhaustion, which is not as serious, but only a step away from heat stroke… very life threatening.

Heat exhaustion can result in nausea, dizziness, confusion, severe headaches and even a loss of consciousness, so it’s time to react or time for intervention if using the buddy system.

get in the shade, cool the body core down with a wet towel or even water poured over your body; one trick I like to use is a constant water soaked handkerchief or bandana around neck. Evaporation will cool your neck and head, where much of our body heat vents, that evaporation act similar to a refrigerator and will lower your temperature lower than the outdoor temperature at the time.

I also wet a hat, everyone should wear a hat in extreme sun, water dripping down your back feels nice and cool, and any wet clothing works on the evaporation principal, hats will also protect your skin. Use sun tan lotion if your skin is very light colored; I have darker skin color and always wear a hat outdoors, yet I was the unfortunate recipient of skin cancer on my nose. Use caution and stay healthy, I have dealt with many in all stages of heat exhaustion stroke to heat stroke, and have seen some extremely ill that resulted in symptoms lasting for weeks.

Some of the cases were life threatening and if intervention wasn’t applied these cases could have gotten serious fast, we have to use caution every day of our lives, some things are just more apparent than others.

Headaches can also be caused by not wearing sun glasses on very bright days, the risk is doubled on reflective water or around reflective man made items like building supplies. Also, eyes can be damaged by severe UV sun’s rays, many don’t know this but, the sun’s rays penetrate clouds and even on a partially cloudy day you’re exposed to UV damage. So, a hat and sunglasses are not just to look cool, wearing them also protects your health and vision; a few simple precautions will make summer that much more enjoyable in the outdoors.

Since we are discussing a few summer outdoor precautions I thought I would mention fire watch, it is extremely dry out

there; smokers please don’t discard lit cigarettes on highways or our rural roads.

Every time I set down a tape measure or level it instantly disappears; than the game of catch the fur baby thief is on, most may get frustrated and upset, but she makes me smile and take a few needed breaks.

In our ag e we’ve come from people who just travelled on foot or maybe a bit later on a horse.

Maybe if water was handy like a lake or river, a birch bark canoe. Not really all that long ago, as time goes. It was the same-old, sameold way for centuries before, wasn’t it?

When our “ Nor th -West Mounted Police”, came out in the 1870’s they had to travel all that open country and almost perished. The prairies were so desolate that the idea was, it wasn’t worth for much else then buffalo and the hardiest natives. Wow!! Just a place to be endured for a long dusty time!! That’s our major farm area now, imagine!! That same country now is all civilized.

I n my c h i l d h o o d D a d r e m a r ke d he remembered hearing of the first powered airplane flight. He was just a boy and the radio was a real mystery to most. People would travel miles to sit and listen to a radio!! Same with any kind of a telephone.

I can remember the post office in my early days was fast and efficient, but that only became possible when the railroad came through. Before that the “Battleford Edmonton”, trail was travelled by, “Red River Carts”, and the mail maybe came twice a year!! No daily newspaper, you think?

In those early times, much of the land remained as yet unbroken and even in my dad’s time much of the countr y was open and unfenced. In a whirlwind of change, land that had been bison pasture and nature hunting ground for centuries is now intensively farmed and in demand of high prices in today’s times. Country that

had barely a track or trail, now has hi-ways and fences and towers for all kinds of communications standing like sentinels watching all this happening!!

If we look back a way, we see that for many years ships sailed with wind power, there wasn’t any other way, except for people pulling on oars I guess!! That went on for centuries before some inventive soul discovered steam, then turbines to power ships even if the wind doesn’t blow when you want it to, and the direction that’s favourable. Hmm, I wonder how we’d do going back to that.

N o w, f o l k s c a n c l i m b a b o a r d a jet and, before a sailing ship, could get out of sight of land you could be hundreds of miles away, maybe even thousands. Even in our age communication has come from a relatively slow pony express, to telegraph, to tele-

phone and air mail to this age of smart phones that can send messages and pictures at the speed of light!! Hard to believe!!

The sythe of time has harvested so many by now that only the younger in those times are still around to tell about it. Memories of times before the country got electrified and we had to do with a kerosene lamp or lantern and all the dangers they held. Fridges and electric stoves weren’t even on the brink of probability and we all didn’t have a phone on our person, remember? Seems like they’ve been around forever, well, I can assure you they weren’t.

have been replaced by modern space age innovations. Just this week I sent a picture to my daughter with my smart phone living across the U.S.A, so far away in the speed of light. People of my age feel this more acutely then the young people now that have been conditioned to space age travel, internet and all the modern day common place things of NOW. But, I’m one of the older generations that can still recall horses, steel wheel tractors, how wonderful a cold drink on a warm day was, the pleasure of a simple ice cream cone, a wonderful radio show, an electric light, and water coming out of a tap. Oh, and even a flush toilet with a warm seat on a cold day at school. Ain’t many of us left though.

Some of the most innocuous conversations can initiate a quest of s o m e k i n d. T h i s week, for me, it was a discussion about budgets, inequality, and a nation’s responsibility for the protection of human rights beyond its own borders.

As is often the case, the more I speak, the more I realize how little I actually know for sure. It is a humbling experience. There is temptation sometimes, depending on the company, to make stuff up. Backing up your words with real knowledge and understanding takes work. It’s the difference between BS and credibility.

My homework, I decided, is to learn more about the United Nations. When I say that word ‘more’, I visualize myself standing at the edge of a vast open field on a windy day. Somewhere in the distance is the marker that reads You Have Completed UN Basics 101, but I can’t see even a hint of it. I stand there, small and kind of ignorant. You have to begin somewhere.

in London and agreed upon a set of principles intended as guidelines to building a better, more peaceful world. Convinced that Germany would be defeated despite what seemed overwhelming indicators to the contrary, the governments of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Belgium, Greece, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Yugoslavia, France, and the Provisional Czechoslovak government signed the St. James Declaration in preparation for what they imagined a better life for the citizens of their respective nations after the end of war. Government leaders at the time must have decided it was their duty to attempt to work toward peace. Among other principles, signing nations agreed: ‘that the only true basis of enduring peace is the willing cooperation of free peoples in a world in which, relieved of the menace of aggression, all may enjoy economic and social security; and that it is their intention to work together, and with other free peoples, both in war and peace to this end.’

In August 1941, US President Franklin Roosevelt and UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill met ‘somewhere in the high seas’ to issue what would become known as the Atlantic Charter. The two leaders signed a Joint Declaration affirm-

ing ‘certain common principles in the national policies of their respective countries on which they based their hopes for a better future for the world.’ Roosevelt and Churchill laid the foundation for the establishment of an International Peace Organization by speaking to the necessity of moving toward an abandonment of the use of force between nations, recommending disarmament for any nation refusing to adopt similar principles.

On the 1st of January 1942, leaders of the United States, USSR, United Kingdom, and China signed the Declaration

by United Nations, affirming alliance with the principles set out in Roosevelt and Churchill’s Atlantic Charter and adding to it a pledge ‘to cooperate with the Governments of the signatories hereto, and not to make a separate armistice or peace with the enemies (i.e.: Germany)’. Within twenty-four hours, twenty-two additional nations----Canada among them---signed on to the Declaration.

After four years of planning, and much negotiation respecting final content of its Charter, on October 24, 1945, the United Nations, an international organization designed ‘to end war and promote peace, justice, and better living for all mankind’ emerged with a total of fifty nations having full membership. The Charter, which

included a provision to establish an international Security Council, was first introduced at the San Francisco Conference on April 22, 1945 but it took six months for the required minimum number of member governments to approve it.

Acquiring a sliver of knowledge about the United Nations is simultaneously inspiring and disheartening. Such admirable goals, so much hope for a future world in which all persons could live peaceably shines through accounts of the efforts made by world leaders of the day. They sought each other’s counsel with respect, and somehow found common ground despite their many differences. They committed to working cooperatively to effect a viable resolution to a grave threat to the future safety of all humanity. Their stated principles appear to have been drafted with the intention of benefitting all.

What a concept.

We’re still trying, I suppose. Some world leaders may even still uphold some of those early commitments like eschewing resolutions of conflict through the use of force and violence. Some may sincerely strive to create better lives for not only their own citizens, but also for the global community. I want to believe that’s true. I think it’s complicated. I think there’s much more to learn.

Town Extends Funding For New Treadmill

Following a Council meeting on April 5, funding was approved to purchase a new treadmill for the Vermilion Fire Department for the original amount of $5,500.

After the amount was reviewed at

Council on April 19, it was determined that additional money would be required, and the amount of funding was extended, with Pollard thinking it could cost around $10, 400 for the new treadmill.

Essential oils are made from the extract of plants. They are a very concentrated form.

It takes 11 pounds of lavender to make 1 tablespoon of the essential oil, or 4000 pounds of rose petals to make 1 pound of rose oil.

Essential oils have been used for thousands of years for various purposes.

Essential oils should not be ingested or applied straight onto the skin. They should always be diluted with a carrier oil such as almond oil, jojoba oil, olive oil, coconut oil or grape seed oil. Lavender is the exception, in that it can be sparingly applied to the skin without a carrier

oil. To mix essential oils use 6-8 drops of essential oil to one teaspoon of carrier oil. For children the dilution would be 3 or 4 drops for one teaspoon of carrier oil.

Essential oils have a shelf life of 5 to 10 years, when stored in dark glass bottles and out of sunlight.

Essential oils are used for health, cleaning and scent purposes. Many all natural lotions, shampoos and bath products rely on essential oils to provide the scent. The difference between an essential oil and a fragrance is that the essential oil is made from natural plants, while a fragrance is made from chemicals. These chemical fragrances can often disrupt the hormone systems of the body. Chemical fragrances are used widely in the perfume industry.

Essential oils can provide benefits beyond their scent. Lavender for example has

both relaxing and stress reducing properties. It is a good oil to use at night before you go to bed. Just put a few drops into your bath right before bedtime or on your pillow to help you sleep. Peppermint on the other hand is invigorating and a good one to smell in the morning. Essential oils can also be used in steamers, nebulizers and diffusers. Essential oils such as peppermint and lemon have adaptogen qualities that can help increase focus and reduce stress at the same time and are great in a diffuser when mental clarity is required.

Other essential oils such as tea tree, sage, rosemary, thyme, grapefruit and lemon are good to diffuse into the air to help prevent the spread of colds and flu, while at the same time strengthening the immune system. For health, essential oils can be inhaled or diluted in carrier oil and rubbed

on the skin. Different essential oils have various health benefits. It is always a good idea to test a small amount on your skin; to be sure you do not react to a particular essential oil.

Many essential oils contain natural antibacterial, anti fungal and antiviral properties. These properties make them ideal to use in an all natural homemade cleaners.

Good choices for cleaning are peppermint, lavender, lemon, grapefruit, orange, bergamot, tea tree and rosemary. To make a all natural homemade spray cleaner combine 1 cup if vinegar, 1 cup of water, 2 tablespoons of baking soda and 9 drops of essential oils, in a spray bottle and shake.

When you use cleaners made of all natural products, you no longer live in a home in which every single surface is covered in chemical residue from chemical cleaners.

Showing, Guiding And Practicing

The Vermilion 4-H Beef Club feels showing, guiding and practice is the key to learning new ways of handling, grooming and showing their show cattle.

On Saturday, April 23 the club held a mock achievement day at the Lakeland College Equine Centre to help prepare their members for the upcoming Achievement Day and Interclub Show and Sale on May 29 and 30.

This was the first year the club has held a mock achievement day and the purpose of the day according to Club Leader, Derek Jones was to give the members of the 4H Beef Club the opportunity to learn how to clip and groom their heifers or steers, as well as, how to show them.

“We have brought in Robbie Dixon from Vermilion and Grayden Kay from

Lloydminster who have extensive experience in showing to go through what kinds of combs and brushes to use and what they like to use. They also gave a demonstration of clipping and grooming on their demo heifer and then had the kids try it out on their own heifers or steers. Rob and Grayden went around and gave pointers to the kids as they needed it and also gave pointers on showmanship.” said Jones.

Ginger St. James Coming To Lloydminster

Ginger St. James, the Rock-n-Roll/ Country music artist, from Hamilton, Ontario is excited about her visit to Lloydminster during her Western Tour, where she will be performing at The Root on May 6, 2016.

“We’re stoked to come to my favorite part of Canada,” Said St. James. “I am a big fan of the Bad Lands, I love Alberta.”

Completely fascinated by the thought of performing, St. James has been writing songs and telling jokes since she was 3-years old, and was heavily influenced by artists such as Carol Burnett and Bernadette Peters. She was also inspired by the Broadway Musical, Annie.

“I used to sing her ‘Tomorrow’ all the time when I was young,” said St. James.

As the allure for entertaining grew, she enrolled in jazz and tap dance lessons, performed in school plays and even spent

a summer at the Theatre Aquarius acting camp. After exploring the idea some more, she was “bit by the bug”, and her love for the stage provided her with a rewarding career as a dancer, actress and model.

Wanting to focus on singing and learning guitar riffs, she moved to Toronto, Ontario, where she was contacted by guitarist, Snowheel Slim, who became her songwriting partner and band leader.

St. James performed at countless major festivals and fairs, and made numerous theatre and headline appearances, which extended her reach across Ontario and Eastern Canada, and provided her with a solid fan base.

Embracing her musical talents, she eventually discontinued her professional dancing, acting and modeling career, and concentrated on accelerating her abilities within the music industry. St. James writes and sings music based on personal circumstances, and believes every oppor-

tunity is a new experience waiting to be written.

“I have a very well rounded life, and have a ‘fly by the seat of my pants’ lifestyle. Sometimes I’ll have an experience or a memory that reminds me of something that I have been through. Or in the moment, if I’m feeling lonely, or if I’m feeling routy, I’ll just write about that,” added St. James.

Her first extended play, “Spank Sparkle and Growl”, won Alternative Country recording of the year at the 2010 Hamiliton Music Awards, and in 2012 she released her follow up extended play, “Tease”.

Hamilton’s View Magazine named her “Best Female Artist” four years in a row, and she won Female Vocalist of the year at the 2015 Hamilton Music Awards.

Apart from being a skilled performer, St. James is also an intelligent business woman, managing her own career and organizes entertainment events. Every March, she puts on a cancer benefit show called “Bands for Boobs”, where all the

proceeds go towards a cancer survivor, or to someone who is still fighting the battle.

This year, Bands for Boobs was held at the Casbah, in Hamilton Ontario, where just over $1000 was raised.

“It’s always a fun event to do. Bring some joy to the families and to the people who are going through some things,” said St. James.

St. James is currently working with Busted Flat Records, who released her debut full-length album, Diesel & Peas in 2015 as well as her new album, “One for the Money”, which will be released on April 29, 2016. She will be traveling for a whole month across Western Canada and both CD’s will be available during her tour.

During the remainder of the summer, St. James will be sticking around Ontario doing festivals and other local shows as much as she can, and in August she will be performing at the Canadian National Exhibition for five days. Her goal is to one day tour across Europe.

Vermilion Girl Guides Ottawa Trip

The Vermilion Girl Guides are planning a trip to Ottawa in the summer of 2017.

Nine girls and three leaders plan on traveling to a part of Canada that most have never seen before. While there, the girls plan on staying at the University of Ottawa and touring parts of the city.

Some of the highlights of their trip will be the tour of Rideau hall, the Aviation Museum, the War Museum, the National Art Gallery, tour of Mint, and the RCMP stables to name a few. Several children are excited for the Canada Day activities at Parliament hill, where they will get to watch the fireworks.

The group will be staying in Ottawa for a week, and so much has been planned for them. However, like any trip, there is

a huge expense. They are trying to cut costs, by doing several fundraisers along the way, such as Little Ceasers Pizza, made Easter baskets, and are currently working on setting up a garage sale.

The Girl Guides garage sale will be on Friday, May 6, and Saturday, May 7 at the Butler building on the fairgrounds. The girls are currently looking for donations from the public, and there will be a few drop off times during the days leading up to the sale. They are hoping the public will come out to support this amazing group of young girls, so they can be able to enjoy this wonderful trip set forth. They will also be having a hotdog sale and selling their classic cookies during the garage sale.

All Wheel Wash Grand Opening

The Grand Opening for All Wheel Wash took place April 22 to 24 with many specials on products and prizes to give away. Lots of muffins, treats, coffee and juice were available as well.

All Wheel Wash service is exactly what its name is. “For all wheels.” Inside are seven self-serve bays and there is an automatic Hybrid Soft Touch or Touchless wash; detailing is also available. For the big trucks there are 2 – 120 foot semi

bays with 7 foot catwalks available.

All Wheel Wash also offers an outdoor seasonal bay and a Superior Water Jug fill station.

If you missed the Grand Opening you can go and check it out. It is open 7 days a week 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

St. Saviour’s Church Garage Sale

With the help of community donations, St. Saviour’s Anglican Church held their annual garage sale on Saturday, April 23.

Judy Misick one of the garage sale organizers said there was an item for just about anyone.

“We have everything from household goods, collectibles to books and puzzles. It’s true what they say, one persons trash is another person’s treasure.” said Misick.

She also went on to say that any funds raised will be put back into the parish for expenditures that may come up in the future and that any item that doesn’t sell will be donated to the Lloydminster Interval Home. The Vermilion Dance Asso ciation hosted their 26th Annual Festival. “Dancing is Like Dreaming With Your Feet!” saw dancers of all ages grace the stage April 22-24 at the Lakeland College Alumni Theatre. Festival Committee Coordinator, Jennifer Laszlo who has been with the group for five years said, “The Ver milio n Dan c e As so c iatio n has been operating as a dance school for 35 years.”

T h i s ye a r, c o m p e t i t o r s included solo and group dancers from Vermilion, Mannville, St. Paul, Lloydminster, Oyen, Consor t, Wainwr ig ht, Ir ma, Vegreville, and Camrose. The Festival welcomed Shannon Teat of Vancouver, British Columbia as this year’s adjudicator.

Teat is trained in jazz, ballet, tap, hip hop, musical theatre, singing, modern, partnering, lifts, and ballroom dancing. She has appeared in commercials, music videos, films, and motion capture for video games. Also, she has been a member of the Vancouver Gr iz zli e s Dan c e Team, a Royal Caribbean Cruise Line dancer, singer, dance captain, rehearsal director, and audition assistant. She has per formed in North Africa for the Canadian Military and all over China in a Vegas style revue show. She is currently an agent representing the west coasts best actors, dancers, and singers with da C ost a Talent M anag em ent in Vancouver.

MLA Starke Says 2016 Budget Hits Agriculture and Rural Alberta

MLA Starke calls the cuts to Alberta Grain Council and the Livestock and Meat Agencies budget casualties, as the budget plans to dissolve 26 agencies, boards and commissions to save $33 million over three years. “A large percentage of these cuts are in the area of agriculture,� said S t ar ke. “ T hi s g over nm e nt d o e s n’ t care about Agriculture and it certainly doesn’t care about rural Alberta. The word agriculture doesn’t appear in the entire budget speech and it doesn’t appear until page 14 of a 17 page speech, I think it shows that agriculture is not on this government’s radar!� said MLA Starke.

details of its budget on April 12, specifically where it will spend more than $7 billion on Alberta roads and bridges. “We are now borrowing money for day to day operations. This budget has set aside less money for wildfire protection. Vermilion residents can expect higher house hold costs because of the carbon taxes,� said Starke. “Two really critical projects at Lakeland College have been cut; the new Dairy Barn and the new animal Health Centre have not received funding in the capital fund,� said Starke. “Unfortunately money is not being spent in the places where we really need it most.�

The low oil prices create challenges for government, with total revenue pegged at $41.4 billion against $51.1 billion in spending. The government is adding a $700-million buffer if oil prices fall into the US$30 barrel range, which would bring the deficit to $10.4 billion.

Salaries and supplies in government departments are to be cut by 2% to save $121 million.

A carbon tax to

begin January 1 will cost a household earning more than $100,000 a year about $500 annually by 2018 as prices go up for gasoline and home heating.

There are no other new or increased taxes.

New Alber ta Child Benefit plans to assist families earning less than $ 41, 2 20. Parent s are to g et u p to $1,100 for one child and as much as $550 each for three additional children.

Family Tax Credit to be enhanced so more lower- and middle-class families can get access to it and draw from it for longer periods.

The province plans to spend $34 billion over the next five years to ramp up construction for roads, schools, hospitals and other facilities.

Drinkers and smokers: The cost of cigarettes goes up by $5 a carton. A case of 12 beers goes up 24 cents and a bottle of wine is increased by 18 cents.

Starting next year, the government plans to begin borrowing for the first time in 20 years to manage its dayto-day spending. Debt for capital is MLA Vermilion/Lloydminster, Dr. Richard expected to hit $36.6 billion by 2018.

The Vermilion Rotary Club Cheque Presentations

Volunteer firefighters answer the call every day Where would you be without them?

Chances are our towns, villages, farms and small cities could be burned to the ground without the dedicated efforts of a group of community members. Who are they?

They are your neighbours, your friends, the local business owners, your husband, wife, sons or daughters. They have one thing in common—they are there to protect you when they answer the call—they are volunteer firefighters!

“I signed up with Canmore Fire and Rescue six years ago,” says Jason Lyon.

“I thought it was the right thing to do—I believe in doing things for my community and my personality is that of a person who likes to get things done. I also like the excitement—every call I respond to is different.”

Like all volunteer firefighters, Jason spends most of his time doing a regular job.

He is the publisher of the Rocky Mountain Outlook newspaper that serves the communities of Canmore, Exshaw, Banff and Lake Louise. “I am fortunate that my employer, Great West Newspapers, supports my participation in the fire department. When a call comes in during work hours, I have to leave but I know the job of putting out the newspaper will get done.”

At first there was some concern of a potential conflict of a news person volunteering as a firefighter but Jason separates his role as newspaper publisher and firefighter.

He does not involve himself in any newspaper reporting—his staff do that. “I keep my mouth shut and let the professional reporters do the investigative reporting,” he adds.

He recalls responding to the southern Alberta floods of 2013. “It was a major disaster and I had to be on the front lines.

The staff at the Outlook responded by being the professionals they are and did the reporting and got the newspaper out.”

“When I go on a call my family goes on a call,” adds Jason. Being a volunteer firefighter requires strong family support and commitment. “Most often calls seem to come in during the evenings and at night. I may be watching a movie or playing soccer with my two kids and suddenly I am called away. My family has to support that and they do.”

Commitment is necessary. The firefighters in Canmore train for three hours every week.

Jason has also volunteered for the special operations team—ice, rope, and swift water rescue—which takes another evening each month. He responds to about 100 calls each year—that averages one call every three days while the Canmore Department responds to over 600. The Canmore department assists in the area from Deadman Flats to the Banff Park area as well as Kananaskis and Spray Lakes.

Peter Krich, Camrose Fire Chief and President of the Alberta Fire Chiefs Association, says that Jason is just the kind of individual that makes our communities safe. Peter has been leading the recruitment program of the AFCA for the past several years. “Almost every fire department has a recruitment challenge, so we developed a program to help. It has been an overwhelming success and has been adopted nationally by the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs,” exclaims Peter.

There are approximately 13,000 firefighters in Alberta. Of those about 11,000 are volunteers. The remaining are fully paid full-time

There are volunteers from 16 years of age (junior firefighters) to the renowned 94-year old Walter Thomas who began his volunteer firefighter career in 1947 (he no longer fights fires but serves as the historian for the Fort Saskatchewan Department).

“Without the 11,000 volunteers, our small and rural communities would be in severe difficulty in dealing with fires. All of us need to recognize that and say a big thank you to them. We can also, make a difference by volunteering too—help us answer the call!” concludes President Krich.

Culinary Talent Sores At Iron Chef Competition

The Vermilion Wellness Youth Iron Chef competition showcased a variety of dishes with the secret ingredient apple at the J.R. Robson school kitchen on April 23. The youth from grades 5-12 on teams of three (with a parent supervisor) had 2 hours to prepare three courses using the secret ingredient. Five judges from Vermilion marked the junior and senior groups on presentation, taste, use of the secret ingredient and use of creativity in their cooking.

“The Iron Chef Challenge is an event intended to make healthy food preparation exciting and engaging for children, teaching youth about nutrition by engaging them in healthful food preparation,” said Head of the Vermilion Wellness Coalition Sean Bell, who was also a judge and MC at the competition.

Appetizers that showed originality and creativity included salads with stewed apple and Greek yogurt sprinkled with

apple cinnamon. Main Courses depicted style and uniqueness using apple in spaghetti bolognese tomato sauce.

Mouthwatering desserts like chocolate apple mousse, apple crumble and blueberry apple tart were devoured by the judges.

At the end of the competition Councillor Caroline McAuley, who was also a food critic and a judge at the competition, praised the young aspiring chefs and advised them to keep up their culinary skills. “All of the dishes were really unique and delicious, keep it up! I can see great potential for some of you to go on to have culinary careers in the future” said McAuley.

“Nothing tasted bad,” added Sean Bell.

There were winners in both the junior and senior categories; ‘Red Bacon’ took home gold in the junior and in the senior section the winners were ‘The Cleland Family.’ Each took home Iron Chef aprons and cook books.

Mannville Ag Society Steak Supper

The smell of perfectly grilled steaks filled the Mannville Rec Centre on April 23 as the Mannville Ag Society held a steak supper fundraiser. The evening also featured a silent auction with various items including sports memorabilia many of which were autographed by some big name athletes. The evening also featured a concert with the band Blackwater Crude, who kept dancers on the floor throughout the evening.

99 Years And Going Strong Well known Vermilion resident, Hector Borle celebrated his 99th birthday at Kin’s Restaurant in Vermilion on April 16.

Hector says the secret to a long life is “Hard work” and “plenty of exercise.”

Hector said he thinks that Alberta’s economy is in bad shape today compared with days gone by. “People were poorer but happier 70 years ago and they didn’t have as much stress.”

At the age of 27, Hector served with the Canadian Military in the Second World War. “We landed in France in 1945; I was in the Transport Intelligence section,” said Hector. “I was lucky I didn’t have to go into combat; I knew how to speak a little German because I had a German grandfather.”

Today, at the big age of 99, Hector said he has no complaints. “I don’t smoke and I drink very little alcohol, I eat very plain food and I walk every day, summer or winter.” Photo Sisel Peter

From badminton to speech presentations, the students have applied themselves to the various tasks that have been laid out in front of them.

April is badminton month and the birdies were definitely in flight! Over the course of the last few weeks the students played in several competitions and continued to improve. Senior high students brought home medals from the following tournaments: Holy Rosary (April 8 ): gold– Kyle Kjenner (singles), bronze– Tyler Manchen & Hailey Fanjoy (mixed doubles), and silver– Kenedi Wood (singles); Lloydminster Composite (April 9): bronze: Keagan Rewuski & Remington Oneschuk (doubles); Tyler Manchen & Hailey Fanjoy (mixed doubles). Rising stars came from junior high last week during the BTJHHA North Playdowns in Kitscoty/ Marwayne. Several players smashed into gold winning performances: Jacy Soly & Cruise Bensmiller (mixed doubles), Paige Fanjoy (singles), and Jace Weidmark & Jelena Parr (doubles). Doubles players, Nicole Dennill and Jenna Bowman bounced around the court to the tune of a silver medal.

16, Paige & Jacy received gold (doubles) and Jace & Jelena received silver (doubles). The BTPS finals were held in Wainwright and the following students received medals: Jenna & Nicole – 2nd in grade 9 girls’ doubles, Jace & Jelena 2nd in grade 8 girls’ doubles, Paige 1st in grade 8 girls singles, Jace & Cruise -1st in in grade 7 mixed doubles. Wow, what fantastic sportsmanship!

Every year Superintendent Bob Allen sends out a call for speech contestants.

Dewberry School continues to answer that call. Over the years we have experienced the progression of the students’ abilities, this year was no different and the students did not disappoint. Although the topics were very different; grades 4-6: “Why I love the first day of school” & “How to make and keep friends” and grades 7-9: “Social Media: Friend or Foe?” & “How can one student make the world a better place?”; the students put on an incredible display. Not only did they write extremely impressive speeches but they were riveting, even some exposing humor in their performances! They did so well, that the judges had a difficult time choosing two to move on. Congratulations goes out to, Ethan Warawa and Savana Deibert they will be heading to the final competition in May. Win or lose? Hockey? What do these have to do with Dewberry School anyway?

We l l, d u r i n g N H L h o c key s e a s o n students, staff and parents took part in a hockey pool. With eyes on the scores and

players, it came down to a nail biting finish for these participants. It definitely made this hockey season something to look forward to, for some, anyways. Topping out the charts was Kyle Kjenner in first, he received an original NHL hockey jersey; Ethan Warawa collected an NHL hat for 2nd place and Ally Orbeck got a hockey t-shirt for her third place finish!! Way to go, you hockey buffs!!!

Success is measured in so many different ways, but it can’t be done without hard work. These students have continued to demonstrate how their hard work leads to success. On April 6, 21 students from grades 4, 5 and 6 travelled to Edmonton to participate in the Klondike Relay meet at the Butterdome. Everyone put forth their best effort and our students placed consistently in the middle of the pack. They came home, already chattering and making plans for next year’s meet.

Congratulations to Tadgh Dalton and Amaya Myhovich who will be representing our school at the Superintendent’s Public Speaking Competition in Vermilion on May 6.

Reminder about the mock accident …

Don’t be alarmed by the wrecked vehicle you will see on the school grounds on April 27. It is just part of ‘It Can’t Happen To Me’ whereas a mock accident is set up to teach students in grade nine the dangers of drinking and driving.

Some ‘in the classroom news’ include

the grade 4 class looking at figurative language (similies, metaphors, hyperbole and alliteration).

In grade 5 social, they are learning about important events in Canada, like the Quebec Act, Confederation and the railway being built. They have now started a project about which Canadian event was the most important in changing the way people lived in Canada.

Students will be using traditional fairytales, myths and legends as the foundation of creating their own ‘fractured’ versions as the students look at elements of voice, character, setting and audience in grade 6 language arts.

Our first Achievement Exam will be on May 10 – grade 9 Language Arts followed

by May 12 – grade 6 Language Arts.

Billy and Edwin, practicum students from Educational Assistant program at Lakeland College, were guest cooks in Mrs. Hart’s junior and senior Foods classes at J.R., teaching our grade 8s to 12s how to make an African rice dish. Blends of spices, parboiled rice, and veggies combined to create such aromatic dishes! Thanks to Billy and Edwin for sharing their authentic Joloff Rice recipe and knowledge!

Several J. R. Robson art students seized an opportunity to show off their work at Vermilion Art Club’s Show and Sale on April 15 and 16. Many exhibited their charcoal, watercolor, acrylic, pencil and mixed media projects. Students also showcased their work last week at the school district’s annual MAD (Music/Art/ Dance/Drama) fine arts night, this year hosted by Provost School. O n F r i d a y, A p r i l 15 , t h e E l e m e n t a r y students gathered in the gym to take par t in the Jump Rope for Hear t Event.

Each grade took turns skipping for one minute at a time. In total they skipped for one hour. At the end of the event students were treated to a frozen fruitsicle. Congratulations to all the students who raised money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. In total the students raised $6,000. Well done St. Jerome’s.

VES scheduled Science in M ot i o n for a visit last week.

Students participated in activities and watched demons t r at i o n s r e l ate d t o t h e i r s c i e n c e curriculum. Grade 3 constructed machines and tested designs. Grade 4 experimented with the proper ties of light. Grade 5 determined chemical proper ties. Grade 6 built some flying machines as they learned about aerodynamics. Students and staff had nothing but positive things to say after their sessions.

We had the Scholastic Book Fair at our school from April 12-18. There were so many items to purchase, and students got to buy books using the book fair bucks that they earned this year from reading in the Accelerated Reading Program. The winner of the family event that received $25 in free books for themselves and $25 for their classroom was Isabelle Hinkley in Grade 5C. Grad e 6 pi c ke d up the sausag e rings from their sausage sales from Stanichy’s. They would like to thank all those who purchased the sausage rings. As well, grade 3 would like to thank all those who donated soup cans for their soup drive. They ended up collecting 252 cans.

O ur Roots of Em pathy theme is safety. Grade 2 students have been discussing milestones such as smiling, rolling over, crawling, and standing. These are all impor tant things babies learn to do, but they learn them at their own pace. Though it is exciting when a baby reaches a new milestone, it might lead to new dangers,

Senior high students spent a day galler y-hopping in Edmonton on Wednesday, April 20, 2016. Accompanied by Mr. Bates as bus driver, J.R. students, myself, and Art 10 and 20 students that we videoconference to at Kitscoty and Innisfree departed together at 7:45 a.m. to our first stop-MacEwan’s Centre for the Ar ts, or “the orange building” on 156 St. There we saw the 2016 graduates’ exhibition, viewing the results of two years of hard work, the various studio and work spaces, and meeting instructors and students. From there we made a quick stop to Delta Art and Drafting so I could show them where our school’s art supplies and much of my personal spending money gets spent. Our lunch

took place at Washoku, a small Japanese bistro downtown, where students culturally expanded their taste buds and several tried Japanese cuisine for their first time. Bento boxes, sushi rolls, sashimi, tempura, and matcha ice cream were just a few traditional dishes that they endulged in. After that, they walked off their food comas along 124 Street to over ten galleries scattered within six blocks. Modern art, classical art, sculpture, paintings, glass work, sketches, outdoor art, beautiful art, confusing art, meaningful art--we saw it all!

Last week we bade farewell (at least for now) to three refreshing and energetic student-teachers, Mr. Paul Robinson, Tegan Zelenka and Mr. Cody Paul.

We wish the best to Miss Zelenka and Mr. Robinson in the tail end of their Bachelor of Education studies, and congratulations in the completion of Mr. Paul’s degree and welcome to the profession!

Grade 6 – 12 students received their report cards last week. Parent/Teacher Interviews will be held this Tuesday, April 26 from 3:3 0 – 8:3 0 p.m. No appointment is needed, the teachers will be available in their classrooms.

Students from the grade 10 Leadership class have been busy organizing a variety of events to involve students in different activities. A high school Ball Hockey Tournament started last week during noon-hour out on the tennis courts. The teams have been battling hard to see who will be able to claim the name of champions. Other events for the students to look forward

to are the 30-Hour Famine, Pop-Pong Tournament, a Show and Shine and an Open Mic at noon-hour.

Element ar y stud ents have been working hard memorizing, and practicing their poems in class for Declamation. Students said their poems in class and were then chosen to perform at the Parent Event. The Parent Event will be held on Thursday, April 28 from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. in the gym. Congratulations to all the students for the hard work they have demonstrated as they prepared for Declamation.

had a beautiful walk to the Catholic Church to celebrate mass. The French 20/30 students helped with the readings, intentions, gifts and choir for the mass. Father Roger’s message was about the Light of Christ that pierces the darkness at the Easter Vigil and in our lives. He reminded us to keep our focus on Christ and His light.

This year VES has been emphasizing being good citizens within our community and beyond. At the monthly Parent Advisory Council Meeting, the grade 1 teachers shared all that grade 1 students had been doing to be good citizens, including working and visiting with seniors, sending crafts to the hospital and performing random acts of kindness. Also at the PAC meeting, information regarding planning for the next school year were discussed. Mrs. Kindergarten A and Kindergarten B classes went to the College Farm to have a tour.

The students have been exc itedly counting down the 21 days until the chicks should begin pecking at their eggs and hatching. In conjunction with this theme, the students went on a field Complete performance exhaust for gas, trip to the College Farm. Thanks a lot DPF and diesel vehicles to Joanne for touring them around and sharing so much information about the Exhaust farm animals.
