Dancers from Eastern Alberta and Western Saskatchewan travelled to Vermilion to perform in Tap, Jazz, Ballet, Hip Hop, Acro, Musical Theatre, Lyrical, Variety, Modern and Contemporary entries at the Lakeland Alumni Theater, last weekend from April 8 - 10.

Years of training, as well as age were taken into consideration to ensure participants received appropriate and meaningful adjudications.

Marwayne Dance Association Instructor, Kirstin George said that all of her students worked hard in the lead up to the festival. “It’s our first festival of the season. They put a lot of effort and energy into preparation for these performances this weekend,” said George.

The STEPS mantra is to Strengthen Talent and Excellence through Positive experiences, and in promoting a friendly, supportive atmosphere.

This year ’s adjudicator was Tif fany Wagner. Wagner, who is originally from Saskatchewan, professionally trained out of Harbour Dance Centre and is a member of the Canadian Dance Teachers Association (CDTA). Her studio, Leader School of Dance, Sisters Hannah and Grace Sutherland from Marwayne performed a dance duet called ‘Sweetest is in it’s 18th season of qualified dance and Dreams’ in the STEPS festival last weekend. Tiger players were presented with their end of season awards at the Reunion Hall in Vermilion on Saturday, April 9th. The awards ceremonies followed a banquet, with 75 people and most of the team of 24 players in attendance.

Team President Ray Bourner announced that although he is moving to Saskatchewan he plans to stay involved with the team and that he looks forward to seeing where the team finishes up next year. “I don’t know if I will see some of these young people again and I just want to say that you are an outstanding group of young people.

“In the last quarter of the season, we played outstanding hockey and there is still plenty to be optimistic about for next year,” added Bourner.

Jake McCormack was presented the Most Improved Player Award, sponsored by Integra Tire and Auto Service.

Jared Golinowski was presented the Most Gentlemanly Player Award, sponsored by Vermilion Credit Union Ltd.

Kitscoty ‘Medium Rare’ Comedy Marie Conboy Reporter

The play ‘Medium Rare’ was performed by the Kitscoty Community Theater at the Kitscoty Community Hall on April 8 and 9.

The comedy was greatly enjoyed by the audience and the hall was filled with laughter. The stage was redesigned into a colourful 70’s style set.

The comedy tells the story of a young couple who are not happy when they move into their new home and find a plucky, persnickety and painfully perky old lady living on the property.

Most of the 15 actors are from Kitscoty and one is from Lloydminster.

Actors have been rehearsing once a week since January and if you missed last week’s play, you can catch it again this weekend on April 15 and 16.

H av e y o u e v e r thought about volunteering with an organization or just on yo ur ow n i n yo ur community? Many people have, but it is slowly becoming a dying activity; mainly because we are all so busy in our daily lives and think we don’t have the time to participate. When we think of becoming a volunteer we often think of it as spending countless hours at an event, but volunteering is any act in which we help within our community. The definition of the word ‘volunteer’ states it is “a person who voluntarily offers himself or herself for a service or undertaking and a person who performs a service willingly and without pay.”

So, why should we continue to volunteer our valuable time that we could spend relaxing doing our own thing? Volunteering has many benefits, and we should encourage our children especially to

Learn as if you were to live forever.” It’s never too late to open your mind and learn a new skill, it keeps your brain active. As the saying goes “if you do not use your brain, you lose your brain.”

Another great reason to volunteer is to be a part of your community. Volunteering within our community gives us the opportunity to give back, pay it forward and help each other; you never know when you will need the support of your community in your life.

Just think of the many different people you could meet while completing volunteer work. Imagine helping a foreign person who has come to our country learn about our culture or helping them learn a new language. I have met many immigrants who could not speak English well, and it was very satisfying to help them improve their English skills. I also

had the opportunity to learn a few new words in their language and some pretty fascinating facts about their culture. We have become wonderful friends, and I am sure we will remain friends for a lifetime.

Have you ever felt a little low on selfconfidence? Volunteering is an amazing way to give you the boost needed to feel like you have accomplished a task and took the time and energy required to do so.

Helping at an animal shelter if you’re an animal lover can give a person such a sense of self-worth. Animals do not have a voice of their own. They cannot ask for the attention they crave, but after leaving a shelter where you feel you have made a difference in an animal’s life is beyond second to none, it truly is an amazing feeling.

Besides being a great way to grow personally, volunteering can work to your advantage within your career. Prospective employers often look at a person’s volunteer record and will often recruit an

individual who has volunteered over one who hasn’t. Volunteering can help you learn new skills that you can use within your career and also give you the opportunity to explore new fields.

This week is National Volunteer Week. we have so many different types of volunteers in Vermilion, way too many to list here. We have the ladies who volunteer at the Community Closet; we have all the leaders who volunteer in our 4H community; the coaches and mentors involved in our sports, and the list can keep on going.

We would like to take this opportunity to express a huge thank you to all the volunteers in our community. Without everything you do our children wouldn’t have the opportunity to play sports and keep active, our elderly wouldn’t see the cheery faces that they so very much love to see while in hospitals and long-term care facilities. Without you, our society could become a solemn place. So thank you to all our volunteers for everything you do without expecting anything in return. Bravo!

Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision

A 37 year old male, driver, and a 38 year old male, passenger, were travelling Westbound in a pickup truck pulling a tandem trailer when a tire on the drivers side of the trailer went flat. The driver of the pickup truck pulled over just off the highway and exited his vehicle to assess the damage to the tire. At this time, an extended length semi was driving Westbound in its lane past the pickup truck and trailer and struck the

driver of the pickup truck who had entered the semi’s lane. The passenger in the pickup truck was not injured.

The driver of the pickup truck succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Traffic was rerouted around the scene for several hours while RCMP conducted their investigation and the roadway was cleared.

Speed and alcohol are not considered to

be factors in this incident. Sun glare at the time of the incident may have contributed to reduced visibility. Road conditions were good.

The identity of the deceased is not being released at this time. Victim Services is providing assistance to all parties involved.

Charges are not being considered at this time. An update may be provided if new information becomes available.

Armed Robbery In Wainwright

On April 4th, 2016 at 2:51pm, the Wainwright RCMP responded to a call of an Armed Robbery with a Firearm at G&B Fuels/Anna’s Restaurant located in Wainwright, AB. A male suspect wearing a black hoodie, blue jeans and sunglasses entered the business brandishing a black rifle with a banana clip. The suspect pointed the firearm at the store clerk and demanded cash and cigarettes. A female suspect wearing a camo jacket and pants was standing guard at the front door during the robbery.

The suspects were observed getting into an older model dark green, 2 door car with no license plate prior to departing the area.

The suspects made off with an undisclosed amount of cash and cigarettes.

Outstanding weekend, double digit temperatures in the 20’s, plenty of sunshine almost seemed too hot for a bit, but I adapted quickly as I know the alternative this time of year.

Miss Oohohh and I went exploring again, and I was certain I would see my Wild Crocus flowers blooming all over the place, but they eluded me, strange conditions were perfect but didn’t see a one, but I’m happy to say that all the other signs of spring did arrive on the weekend.

Late Saturday evening the frogs in our “duck pond” broke into song and were singing their hearts out, I love that sound. And as if on cue my Robin’s came home, or at least “momma” Robin, sometime Sunday

she showed up and was trying her best to out-sing the frogs Sunday evening, I had to sit outdoors with Miss Oohohh and listen to the concert of spring. It seemed momma Robins serenade grew louder as she sang to be louder than the frogs, but they upped their volume and soon every frog in the pond was singing loudly to the point Miss Oohohh was getting concerned, this was the first time she heard these noisy neighbors.

It was pure music to my ears which confirms spring is officially here for me, the only thing missing was the mosquitoes, but they are one sign I can certainly wait as long as possible to experience.

I promised Miss Oohohh a good walk on Saturday morning; it was a perfect early morning with a perfect sunrise turning to bright and sunny; I had a few things to do and by mid-morning the thermometer just wouldn’t quit rising. By the time we got

out there, it was hot, almost too hot, I was concerned that Miss Oohohh may overheat with her solid back harness and packs, so we explored every pothole slough we could find. Most were nestled in thick brush and willows so it was perfect for shed antler hunting and she did find several, so it was a perfect day.

She changed up her technique a little on this trip, though. When she found an antler, she waited for me to catch up to her and acknowledge her find as if to say, I dug up the last one; it’s your turn now. I didn’t mind, as she was doing her job as well as could be expected. Miss Oohohh surprised me with an oddity; we were in a thick piece of brush, and she being ahead of me let out a ‘woof’. I thought she may have seen another moose as that’s the “woof” she greets the moose and deer with every time we meet.

But as I caught up to her she was staring at the ground, and I was surprised by her find and reaction, there was a pair of binoculars, somehow lost most likely by a hunter last fall. The binoculars were not in great shape, unfortunately, as it was evident that several curious coyotes also found them and thought the binoculars would make a good snack.

They were chewed up pretty badly, but still a good and interesting find, however, we didn’t bring them out, as I know a hunter will walk those bushes for years trying to solve the mystery of where their binoculars are. So, we set them up high on a tree in a manner they wouldn’t be a fire hazard also, acting like a magnifying glass which is a possibility, as I have personally lit fires in my survival training with binocular lenses.

We had a great day, and by mid-afternoon the temperature was 21C, so we headed home as I didn’t want Miss Oohohh to overheat; at the truck when I removed her pack and harness, she was cool under the system.

unique heat/cold features; one is the wool like undercoat the Malamute has, it cools in extremely hot temperatures as well as heats in the coldest temperatures.

The Malamute will shed or “blow” as it’s called this woolly undercoat in the spring, if saved it’s like having two pups, as this wool will fit a pillow case when shed. The wool is also unique as it doesn’t contain dander like other pet fur. This wool had been processed like sheep’s wool and adventurous people actually knit hats, socks, or jackets with it; although a neat idea, it seems a little creepy to me somehow. I came up with a great idea for this shed wool, songbirds, or birds in general along with other small critters prize this wool for warm nesting or bedding, so even when brushing puppy outside it doesn’t stick around for long. This year I made a little wire mesh basket, and I am going to put all the combings and brushings of the wool into this basket, and it will be a handy dispenser for the birds to collect.

Looking at the river this weekend, it was totally free of ice, and I have an urge for some gold panning, so Miss Oohohh and I are going to do a gold prospecting adventure one weekend soon. Although Alberta in the mid-west is not known for its gold in our rivers, they do contain flour gold in small quantities that won’t make anyone rich, but it is fun and adventurous and is going make for a fun day.

If you haven’t been getting out there, you’re going to get moldy or turn into a mushroom.

About a hundred years later a man sent west to appraise the country judged the country in “Palliser Triangle”, to be too dry to support agriculture. So other than an odd garden patch by some fur traders fort farming was more or less nonexistent.

When it was first attempted the crop varieties came from countries that had longer growing seasons, so a satisfactory yield wasn’t likely.

Once the country had tamed down by the late eighteenth century and the settlers began to arrive, they found the native grass hard to plow and work down and I think ten acres was required to be broken to prove

The other day my husband was in UFA a n d s aw c o p i e s o f Billie Jean Millers new book, Farm wives in Profile, so he picked up a copy if it and brought it home for me. What a wonderful surprise it was.

Being a farm wife myself for almost 40 years, and a vivacious reader he thought I might enjoy it. I know many of the ladies, or their children that are featured in the book, so it was especially interesting. I read through the whole book in one evening, I couldn’t put it down, I enjoyed it so much. I could identify with so much of what these farm women were sharing about their lives on the farm.

My grandpa Wolters and his two stepsons broke those ten acres with a walking plow and a team of horses. It took the best part of ALL SUMMER to get it ready to seed the next season. I don’t remember how they seeded it or got it cut, but the resulting crop was stacked so the threshing machine could be pulled in between the stacks.

My dad arrived in Vermilion in December 1910 as a boy of nine years and the first morning on the farm, witnessed the threshing with a steam engine. I remember him saying he couldn’t believe how cold it was and wondered why on earth they came here!!

In those early times the neighbours helped with different equipment for working the soil seeding and cutting the crops.

Not everyone had a full line of equipment and a threshing outfit of any kind was quite scarce!! That’s why they stacked their crop and waited for a turn to get threshed. Grandpa saw the need and by the time of World War I, they had a threshing machine and a big tractor to run it and

The difference of being on the farm is that there are no fast food restaurants unlike urban areas. We stand small within a circle of accumulation and consumption, surrounded by hands extending to us the perpetual stuff of possibilities, products and services designed to increase our sense of self-worth, improve our personal appearance, and promise an elevated satisfaction with life. Even if the promise is shallow and the satisfaction fleeting or false, we can’t seem to help ourselves. We want it. We want it all.

What are you going to be? We prod our offspring relentlessly, barely concealing our desire that they will choose wisely their future paths. Wisely. Is the message we intend shaded by our own definition of a good life?

Modernity And The Peril of Greed

Of course. We are the ones with half a lifetime or more of experience. We know things. We can save the young a lot of trouble. We can help them avoid some of the big mistakes.

And that’s important because, well, mistakes make a mess of things. They cause delays.

They can set you back.

How come it seems we know so little about how to navigate the practical aspects of life when we’re launched from the double doors of the high school gymnasium after graduation night? Why don’t we learn more about how to identify within ourselves the qualities and skills most likely to serve us well in seeking out and succeeding at some kind of employment? Not just making money, feeling good about what we’re doing in the process of earning it. Understanding the concepts gratitude, of contributing our share to common betterment, of paying good fortune forward.

Why don’t we know anything about how to manage our own finances, not just how to get someone to issue us a pay cheque but how,

from the beginning of our young adult lives, to allocate a part of our earnings to untouchable savings? Why doesn’t anyone on the winding road of education tell us honestly about the danger awaiting us along the perilous path of consumer debt? Why aren’t we warned?

We live in North America, land of opportunity. Forget about the few born into nobility and prosperity. They are absent from the throngs comprising the group a majority of us hold default membership: Ordinary People. Less...or maybe it’s more...is required of them. Ordinary folk line up for the race of equal opportunity. While it may be true that some among us possess advantages due to savvy parental guidance or extraordinary personal awareness, the majority position ourselves nervously in the starting blocks wearing ill-fitting clothes and mismatched footwear. Worse, we can’t see the finish line through the dense fog of knowledge not yet collected in our life portfolio. No wonder so many of us succumb to injuries. Our trainers

abdicated their responsibility. They skipped over some critical parts of our preparation.

We lack focus. We’re visually impaired. We know we want goods, but lack the clarity to ground ourselves first in personhood. We’re barely even fit to enter the competition.

All things are not equal. All people cannot access resources intended to guide toward a path of personal excellence and stability.

Systems are only as efficient as those whose minds and hands design them. Community is as successful and solid as reflected in the circumstances, in the faces of its members, and how community members interact.

The greedy prey upon the unprepared and ill-equipped community. Their greed consumes them. ‘Enough’ is absent from their limited, self-serving vocabulary. The greedy take, but contribute minimally to the community’s common good. Greed is poverty in disguise. Greed is an insatiable monster loyal to no one. After it digests the soul of its host, it hungrily turns in upon itself

A “Double Bill” To Perform In Vermilion

Calgary singer and songwriter, Craig Moreau, who believes you must live it to write it, has definitely lived up to that citation and incorporated a number of different lifestyles throughout the years.

Moreau has been a roadie, bartender, farmer, cowhand, truck driver, stuntman, actor, carpenter, mechanic and a postal worker. He also spent ten years on the rodeo circuit, as well as spent some time learning how to surf in California. “Everything I did, I did in search of a song.”

His first record “Every Now and Then” was picked as one of the best of 2000 by Fast Forward Weekly in Calgary. It also received local, national and global airplay achieving critical acclaim from Performing Songwriter Magazine.

Moreau’s second full length record, “The Daredevil Kid” was released in 2014.

A passionate and energ e t i c p e r f o r m e r, S c o t t Duncan, who was raised in Calgary, grew up in the classical/fiddle world, and enjoys playing all styles of musical genre, such as folk, classical, country, FrenchCanadian, Celtic, blue grass, Cajun and more.

He studied at the Mount Royal College Conservatory for ten years, and did his first tour with the Calgary Fiddlers when he was 11.

Duncan continued touring with the Fiddlers until he graduated high school at age 18.

worked with the directors of the Calgary Fiddlers, assisting with the next step of their journey, which later became the fiddle sensation, ‘Barrage’. Duncan spent the first five years with Barrage, and was incredibly involved with the group’s promotions, (Radio, TV, DVD).

For the past seven years Duncan has been playing regularly with John Wort Hannam, and can also currently be seen playing with the Staggered Pints (an Irish Pub Band), Steve Fisher, The June Bugs, Matt Patershuk, and others.

The Shoppe Opens In Mannville

The Shoppe in Mannville is a new business venture, located on the Main Street in Mannville, which opened earlier this year. The new owner is Massage Therapist, Kelly Dalton.

Kelly officially took ownership of T h e S h o p p e, w h i c h wa s fo r m a l l y known as Beyond Beauty, on December 1st.

The Shoppe has three businesses under one roof. The two other businesses renting at The Shoppe are Pure Bliss Aesthetics by Kari Car twright, which provides eyelash extensions, eyelash curl and tint along with facial/body waxing, spa pedicures, advanced pedicures specializing in problematic toenails.

Shear Madness, owned by Kaneesha Pelletier, provides hairdressing and waxing services.

Kelly has been a Massage Therapist with her own business BodyMind Therapy for the past 6 years. Dalton says that business is going good so far and that she is enjoying her new role as owner. “ I had b e en rent ing of f Roxann N af zi g er at B eyo n d B e au t y, s o i t

has been a nice easy transition. We decided to call it ‘The Shoppe’ because I had always called it the shop so we decided to keep it and to feminize it by adding the letter e at the end.”

Kelly says that the Shoppe will take on more products as it grows. “ We have a tanning salon, essential oils, new hair products, Wild Prairie Soap Company and the Infra red sauna is coming soon. Mannville Artist Kelly Broadhead will be also showcasing her art for sale here,” said Kelly.

The Grand Opening will take place on Saturday April 16, bet ween the hours of 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

There will be in store discounts and door prizes with coffee and snacks served all morning. “ We are hoping to have all of our renovations finished before the Grand Opening on April 16. It will be a chance for the three of us girls to network with people and let the community know what products and ser vices we are carrying and the new things that we are doing.”

Sheila Cadman runs Threshold Fitness Nutrition which is now open in the Lakeland Mall.

She grew up in a small town in Alberta and stayed busy showing cattle and playing sports. Following high school graduation she went on to Red Deer College where she obtained her Kinesiology & Sports Studies diploma. Cadman kept active being a member of the Queens hockey team, soccer team, and X-country running team. She then went on to complete her Bachelor of Physical Education/Education Degree at the University of Alberta, and continued playing Tier One women’s hockey. After University, she started teaching and volunteered many hours coaching

On March 20, 2016 William “Bill” Hector MacFadyen passed away at the Vermilion Hospital at the age of 89 years, one week short of turning 90.

Bill was born March 27, 1926, to Ulva and Lillian MacFadyen, second child after brother Don. Two sisters followed, Ruth and Mary. Bill had spent the last 10 years living in Lloydminster, but was born, raised and lived most of his life on a farm a mile south of Islay.

Bill is survived by brother Don (Erna) MacFadyen of Hardisty along with their sons Dale (Sharon) of Daysland, Brent (Shirley) of Hardisty, and Darren of Spruce Grove; sister Ruth (Jack) Knoll of Islay; sister Mary Ternoster of Vermilion and her daughter Sherry (Gerald) Martin of Vermilion; nine great nieces and nephews; one great great niece and one great great nephew; as well as many cousins.

He was predeceased by his father Ulva in 1964, mother Lillian in 1982 and nephew Gerald in 2002.

A Memorial Service was held on March 23, 2016 at the Islay Community Hall with Candice Anderson officiating. The urn bearer was Dale MacFadyen.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Lakeland Funeral Home.

North Central Customer Appreciation Day

North Central Livestock Exchange was packed with farmers and commercial cattle buyers from far and wide, for its Customer Appreciation Day and Auction on April 9.

Customers enjoyed BBQ Bison burgers and there were a wide variety of door prizes donated by local businesses.

The Auctioneer was Les Trach. North Central owner, Leonard Hrehorets welcomed local farmers and ranchers. “Although we’ve been through some bad times with BSE in the past, we are making decent prices today,” said Hrehorets. In the late 1960s, Volunteer week was revived and instead of just focusing on one specific group it was to include all community volunteers. In the 1970s and 80s, the importance grew to include all local volunteer centers. The third week of April was proclaimed to be National Volunteer week in 1990 in all communities across our country so that we can pay tribute to all of Canada’s volunteers and to bring awareness of the important roles volunteers play within our communities.

Volunteering can have a meaningful and positive impact on your community, it provides valuable community services so more money can be spent on local improvements. By becoming a volunteer, your services can strengthen your community in many different ways.

Volunteering at a hospital or long term care facility will help support families within your community. Families who have the added stress of caring for and visiting a sick or elderly family member could feel a sense of relief knowing that there are volunteers willing and able to visit and help with their loved ones.

“We have a variety of positions, volunteers in the hospital allows staff to attend to the higher needs for patients. The volunteers we need the most are Meal Assistants- feeding residents in Long

Term Care who are unable to feed themselves. It’s a very important position as there are three meals a day, seven days a week. It’s not just feeding them but the social experience that we all enjoy during our mealtimes.

We have incredible staff and residents at the Vermilion Health Centre, and volunteers can help both, and have a rewarding experience too,” said Heather MacMillan, Volunteer Coordinator.

Volunteering at your schools or other educational services such as CLASS can offer individuals within your community the opportunity to succeed in their education or help a member of your community advance in areas in which they require extra help.

Society, especially during the Vermilion Fair, require volunteers to participate in different roles to help make the Fair the success it is each year. The Vermilion Heritage Museum currently require volunteers.

Also, there is Allied Arts, the Folk Club, the various sports programs that give children, young adults, and adults the chance promote their personal growth and teamwork skills.

The local Food Bank and Hearts and Hands that provide assistance to individuals and families within the community during times of need may require some helping hands.

As well, if you are looking for a volunteer opportunity that can really change a person’s life the Vermilion Fire Department or area fire departments would be a great place to volunteer your time.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) is celebrating volunteers across the Central Zone next week for the vital role they play in support of patients, residents, families and staff.

During National Volunteer Week, which runs April 10 to 16, facilities throughout Central Zone will behosting special events to thank volunteers for their hard work and commitment.

Last year, 3,300volunteers were registered with AHS throughout central Alberta. These volunteers, along with 180 community groups and 28 Auxiliaries, contributed over 167,000 hours of their time and talents to helping patients, families, visitors and staff.

Volunteers contribute in many ways, including helping: Locate various services within the hospital, getting patients active and moving around, visiting patients and residents in care, providing mealtime assistance andspiritual care services and increasing patient engagement through fun games, outings, art activities and pet visitation programs.

Serve as patient and family advisors on AHS committees, including local auxiliaries, foundations and associations.

Supportstaff, patients and clients in clinical areas, such as laboratories, diagnostic imaging, nursing units and pre-op assessment, as well as with home care, public health and other community services.

Support staff with general duties,such as photocopying, folding linens and collecting wheelchairs.

Town To Purchase New Treadmill

Council for the Town of Vermilion passed a motion approving funding for up to $5,500 to purchase a new treadmill for the Vermilion Fire Department on April 5.

Following a meeting with members of the Public Safety and Protection Services Committee at the Vermilion Town Hall on 24 March, the Committee concluded that purchasing a new treadmill was better money spent than putting $1,500.00 into repairing a used one.

“The existing treadmill at the Fire Hall has been used extensively by members of

the Fire Department and is in need of repair at an estimated cost of $1,500. It was originally purchased second hand from Lakeland College,” said Councillor Clint McCullough.

“It is well worn. The new treadmill intended for purchase is a light duty treadmill, the heavy duty treadmills cost between $10,000 – 12,000. The life expediency on the new one they are looking at is 3 years,” added McCullough.

“Firefighters train in their gear, running with 300 pounds of weight on the treadmill, so the machines can get worn down very fast,” said Mayor Bruce MacDuff.

Mayor MacDuff said he believes it’s important to keep our Firefighters in shape because they do the job of keeping us safe. “They are volunteer Firefighters and they pay for their own training and only get paid for call outs,” said MacDuff.

Quotes are currently being researched for the new treadmill; a treadmill from Flaman Fitness out of Wainwright was one of the options quoted for approximately $4,500.

Vermilion Fire Department Chief Bill Roth was requested to receive more quotes to ensure the price and quality of the treadmill at full value.

Seniors News

Submitted Hi to all our Senior Centre News readers. We are still very much alive and active at our beautiful centre. We often receive complements from other communities on just how nice our centre is- we could not be prouder.

On March 9, we had our annual meeting with 45 members present. At this meeting four executive positions were filled as members decided to retire from their ‘jobs’. Thanks to those members who so willingly decided to replace the retirees. A sincere thank you to the ones that stepped down- a JOB WELL DONE. Our membership approved donating money toward the MOSAIC that will take place in Vermilion as part of the Canada 150 Celebrations seniors will be asked to take part in the tile paintings at our centre in early 2017. The final ART will be featured inside the Arena lobby area.

On March 23 we hosted a fun floor curling tournament with 16 teams taking part in the days activities. Teams travelled from

Wainwright, Kitscoty, Myrnam, Kinsella, Viking and Mannville to participate with our local members. Much fun and laughter was enjoyed with our out of town friends.

Winners that day were -1st Harry Rathje rink, Mannville; 2nd Carol Wilson ring, Wainwright and 3rd Kelly Qinn rink, Kitscoty. On April 27 our Centre will be hosting the regional floor curling wind-up.

On Good Friday March 25 we held our 3 rd annual Fish Bake. We sold out of tickets and apologize that we had to turn people away. The ladies from the centre took care of preparing and ser ving the food for the noon meal. We want to thank the community for your continued support.

Our senior choir- The Happy Harmonizers, participated in the Musical Festival on Monday, March 21. They were honoured with high praise and a certificate, as well as a scholarship for all their efforts- well done members! Congratulations for your efforts. Two new members have joined the Choir this year and others who love to sing are encouraged to come out and join the group.

The pool hall is always busy in the afternoons and evenings. We can tell by the laughter those participating are enjoying themselves. New pool players are always welcome.

Our club has been busy since my last report. We had a movie fun night on March 24th in St. Paul and we all saw Zootopia. We had farm tour on April 3rd and checked out everyone’s beef and poultry projects on their farms. Everyone is doing a great job with their projects.

After farm tour, we had our April meeting. Secretarys report was done by Bailey Dymitriw. Mrs. Pashulka gave o u r m e m b e r s t h e i r p l a c i n g s fr o m the Lit tle Royal Judging Competi t i o n. O ur c lu b’s team s were t h ir d andighth overall with Austin Campbell placing 10th, Bailey Dmytriw placing 12th, Tyson Pashulka 20th, Riley Pashulka 21st, Seth Tr ynchuk 24th with Karsen Trynchuk, Taylor Pashulka and Jaeanna Saskiw also doing great.

We are holding our mock achievement day May 13th at the Myrnam arena. Our Achievement day is June 5th and we are also hosting the Two Hills District Interclub Show and Sale on June 6th.

We discussed our plans for achievement day and the interclub show and sale and assigned tasks to each family.

The next 4-H meeting is May 7 after hi g hway c l eanu p. Dr i ver s, p l ea se watc h o u t fo r 4 - H er s w h o w i l l b e cleaning the ditches on May 7!

The regional heifer show is June 18.

Our club will be building and painting birdhouses and putting them up on our farms. These are part of the Find Your 4-H Wings program sponsored by TransCanada. We also got seeds for pollinator gardens from the Proud to Bee a 4-Her program sponsored by Syngenta.

Our club is doing a raffle fundraiser again this year. We printed 200 tickets and they are $20 each. First prize is a barbecue, second prize is a garden bench, and third prize is a $50 greenhouse gift certificate. Main Street Hardware Customer held their spring Customer Appreciation Days on April 8, 9 and 10. There was 15 per cent off all regular and red tagged items, along with draws and a fundraiser for the local 4-H Beef club.

“This is now the 3rd year for our Spring Customer Appreciation sale. There were prizes as well and this year we offered a

seed starting package to the individual who could guess the number of onion sets inside the 2 jars,” said Store Manager Ebony Jensen. “Every year we have invited the Vermilion 4H beef club to put on the BBQ. All funds raised go towards their club as our way of giving back to the community.”

Food and supplies are donated by Main Street Hardware and the UFA provided shelter for the club.

Speaking of experiences travelling abroad, our senior high Social Studies teacher, Mr. Maier, will be spearheading the 2017 spring break trip. With student feedback, he’ll be deciding soon whether the destination will be Ottawa and Quebec or European.

23 Marauders discovered the American wonders of Boston and New York City during spring break. I had the pleasure of witnessing several students’ first-time experiences--first flight, first time leaving the prairies, first time on a ferry or subway, first time seeing a several-hundred year old historical monument, first time seeing a famous artwork, and so many more. The organized and adorable tour director, Donna, combined with our flexible and adventurous travel group of awesome students, adults, and chaperones, made for a smooth trip. Our intense itinerary had us busy all day and, according to Miss Felt, walking an average of 8 miles per day. Our “wicked awesome” Bostonian list included Freedom Trail, Harvard University, fragment of the Berlin Wall, Charles River, Fanheuil Hall, and one of the world’s longest running shows, “Shear Madness”. In New York City, we hit up the Empire State building, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, an all access tour of and semi-final college basketball game at Madison Square Garden, the MET and Guggenheim Museum, Central Park, “An American in Paris” Broadway Show, Times Square, Fifth Avenue, Chinatown and Little Italy, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the 9/11 Memorial. It was great to h ave a n Ea s ter break and enjoy some time with family and friends and some of that spring weather. It is also wonderful to be back at school to see the people we missed and to get back into our routines again.

Our April virtue is self-control, which is the ability to control your emotions, feelings and actions in the face of temptations and impulses. When you have the ability to exert self-control, it helps you to achieve long term goals. Take note of your feelings and thoughts and then decide what your best reaction should be.

VES had their monthly AR Assembly on April 6. Mrs. Tomkins informed us that as a school in the month of March we accumulated 2321 AR points, making our grand total to date be 16 876 points.

35 of our VES Jaguars went to the Klondike Relay in Edmonton on April 5 with Mr. Beecroft and Mr. Harvey. The Jaguars were presented with the following ribbons: Grade 4 8x60 running team got seventh, Grade 4 boys ball throw received sixth, Grade 5/6 boys ball throw achieved third, and the Grade 5/6 girls ball throw team came home with first place. Way to go, Jaguars.

National Volunteer Week falls during April 10th – 16th. MMI-FCSS is planning a Volunteer Appreciation Evening on April 14th at 6:30 p.m. at the Mannville Rec Centre and we are joining in with them. Please come and join in a thank you celebration for all volunteers within the community.

Our school division is a registered par ticipant in the No Child Without program. The No Child Without program offers a free medical aler t bracelet to children living with medical conditions.

If you have a child in your home between the ages of 4-14 that has a condition whereas you need a medical alert bracelet, please contact Erin Hinton at the school for information about this program.

Mrs. Tod and her kindergarten class will be looking at the needs of plants.

They will be comparing seeds and watching seeds sprout. They have their very own flower shop set up in the classroom as well. They are planning a visit to “Shirley’s Flowers and More” to learn about different kinds of flowers.

Mrs. Ambrock and her Grade 2 class

are wrapping up learning about the traditions of Saskatoon, Meteghan and Iqualuit. The students picked a community and either typed up the information on google slides or they put the information on to a poster. This project involved working in groups.

Mrs. Campbell and her Grade 3 social class had their Cultural Tasting Party whereas they sampled sausage (Poland), dates and olives (Tunisia), naan bread and chicken dish (India), perogies and cabbage rolls (Ukraine), pizza (Italy), and desserts from Mexico and the USA. It was a great experience sampling and learning about these foods.

Mrs. Amero and her Grade 4 class have been working on a fur trading post project. They are going to explore the questions: how Metis roots began, who are the Metis, how did they help the fur trade, how did the Metis solve their travel problems, how Metis communities began and symbols of the Metis identity.

The Grade 7 girls have begun a lunch hour program with Miss Almberg and Mrs. Lorenson. Chill and Spill is an ar t based program that encourages expression, self-awareness, and conflict management. They will be
