Council for the Town of Vermilion passed a motion approving the re-build of the outdoor rink between St. Jerome’s and VES Schools at a Council meeting on March 15.

The Outdoor Rink, that is to be constructed this summer and aims to be ready for the 2016 winter season, will cost between $250,000 and $300,000.

The Town of Vermilion has agreed to allocate $175,000 in funding towards the new rink, which will come out of the MSI (Municipal Sustainability Initiative).

“We will be looking for another $50,000 from the community. We will need to get together a fundraising committee,” said Town of Vermilion Community Services Director, Shawn Bell.

“Hopefully some construc-

tion companies can help with the cost, and some have mentioned to me already that they are interested in helping out with materials and labour which is great. The concrete will be the biggest cost.”

Bell said that the new Outdoor Rink will be an investment in the community’s future and when complete, should last for the next 40 years.

“The first step in the process is to award the project to one of the companies that provided us with a quote, and then work with them to get our facility built to include the features we want for the money we have,” said Bell.

“The successful quote will be responsible for installation of the boards and chain link fence and providing specs for the concrete slab, which will be tendered out to local contractors (including demolition of the existing facility).

will not hear the outcome of the CFEP application until June, and there is no guarantee.”

Time To Say Goodbye

It was a bittersweet farewell at the Final Skate Party in Dewberry as the community celebrated the end of an era. The Arena was packed with large crowds of well wishers and local supporters who reminisced of times gone in the hub that brought the community together dating back decades.

The evening’s events began with the Dewberry Figure Skaters demonstration followed by the National Anthem sung

by Krystal Becker, after which the Canskate kids and hockey players skated with Canadian flags.

Dewberry Ag Society President, Allan Parr made a project announcement, stating that the debenture has been released and indicates they should receive funding by the middle of June. The new building has been ordered and it should be standing by the middle of July; it won’t be finished but Dewberry will have a usable facility for next season’s hockey.

Castle Rock Engineering out of Edmonton has been hired for the job.

Holly Holmen, Dewberry Arena project coordinator said the night was a huge success.

In a town of approximately 200 people, the arena brings in roughly $120,000 to the economy each year. The new arena will cost an estimated $4.1 million to build, with $2.5 million having already been

fundraised.

MLA Lloydminster – Vermilion Dr Richard Starke took to the ice in his hockey gear joining the teams in good spirits.

Hockey games were played between the teams, Dewberry Minor Hockey and Dewberry Panthers. The Dewberry Women’s Hockey Team played against the Alumni Women’s Hockey Players and lastly the Dewberry Mustangs played the alumni Heinsburg recreational team.

While other onlookers in the crowd said they were looking forward to the new arena.

A balloon raffle was popped on mass to signal the end of the arena’s lifespan.

Chuckwagon drivers Chance Bensmiller and Dallas Dyck were also in attendance after returning from the 2016 Calgary Stampede GMC Rangeland Derby Chuckwagon Canvas Auction.

This year’s prices reflected a year of economic uncertainty and were considerably lower than last year.

Kurt Bensmiller, the 2015 Rangeland Derby Champion, received the highest bid of $120,000.00 from Tsuu T’ina Nation in Calgary on March 17, $50,000 less than last year.

Vermilion Cast Shone In “The Jungle Book” Elina Castro Allied Arts Submitted

E x tr aor d inar y what young people c an ac c o m plish with an experienced director and a fresh, humorous script in only five days. Written by Michael McGill and based on the classic tale by Rudyard Kipling, the Missoula Children’s Theatre production on March 19 was directed by Katrina Sebastian and led by an expert Jessie Selleck, as Baloo the Bear who narrated throughout.

The play opened with the wolf pack discussing the man-cub Mowgli’s status within the family. There was a variety of opinion, expressed by Owen Aitkin and his admiring Wolf Pack, the Monkey-People, and a hissing, rattling Kaa played by Clay Corbiere, Sean Ulrich and Jonas Atkinson.

While repelling attacks by a moody Shere Khan played by Kyle Smith with his constant sidekick, the hilariously eccentric Tabaqui played by Shane Newberry, Mowgli began

to question himself. In a clear, confident nity Closet Society of Vermilion, and Town of Vermilion for their generous contribution. voice, Amber Wagner as the grown up mancub delivered an excellent “Am I worth it?”

Suppor ted by Ashley Corbiere as Bagheera, with the Mother Wolf, played by Cheradyn Bessette, Bray Crowe as Father Wolf, a superb Avery Corbiere as a very yellow Wolfy, and Wolf Pup Mary Ulrich, the pack rallied around Mowgli and examined issues of belonging, bravery, and the meaning of family.

And then there are those characters who surprise and charm just by being there: Kayla Rowan as Hathi, the unexpectedly small elephant, Rachel Rowan as Darzee the bird, David Minchin as Buck who kept querying the cosmos with a ringing: “Where does the Buck stop?” while Brent Rowan as Rikki-Tikki-Tavi dashed across the stage trying to explain that he was a mongoose.

Some of the 250 Eastalta employees travelled from Wainwright, Dewberry and Mannville to attend the event in Vermilion. Directors and management greeted a packed hall after dinner. General Manager Gerald Hiebert gave a presentation giving the 2015 summary of results on the Co-op profits and new facilities in the year 2015.

“Despite the economic downturn, 2015 was a very successful year for the Co-op. I am confident in saying that our financial results that have fallen off will come back and we will have one of the most successful businesses in the communities that we have,” said General Manager Gerald Hiebert.

The Dueling Pianos provided entertainment and interacted with the audience at the end of the evening.

Owl’s Therapy In New Territory

“This is a first,” said the Director of Wildlife at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Society of Edmonton, Kim Blomme, regarding some of the unconventional treatment the great horned owl “Olaf” is receiving.

The owl is currently undergoing laser therapy in an attempt to break down scar tissue that has built up on the patagial ligament of his injured wing. The scar tissue is preventing him from flying properly.

“We were getting a bit dismayed by the lack of progress in gaining height when he was flying, so after another vet check and Xrays, the vet suggested laser therapy,” said Blomme.

“The wing has healed really well, but there is a “thickening” in the patagial ligament. We found a clinic here in Edmonton and they are thrilled to be able to try and help. He has been in for three treatments now and there

will likely be a few more,” she added.

“They even had a chiropractic vet on and she did a bit of work on (the owl) as well!”

Blomme said they were for tunate that the chiropractic vet just happened to be there when the laser treatments were being per formed when she offered her services, which included feeling along the owl’s shoulder and spine.

“We’re on new ground here,” said Blomme. “But we are getting near the end of possible therapies.”

Blomme added they will not know for sure whether these measures will be effective in breaking down the scar tissue that will hopefully result in the owl’s flight being restored to a point where it can be released into the wild.

“This bird has to hunt. It would be different if it was a grouse which just eats off the ground.”

Blomme added that they are getting closer to having to make a judgement

call about “Olaf’s” release.

“We’ll keep our fingers crossed and hope we see improvement.” “ O laf ” the great horned owl has been recovering from his injuries as a result of his wing being impaled on a

barbed wire fence just north of Vermilion, since July 2015. “ S o m e p e o p l e m i g ht b e s ay in g, ‘how much more are you going to put this bird through’, but we’re not ready to give up on him yet,” said Blomme.

Cast members from the Vermilion Adult Theatre group presented the dark comedy “Somebody Famous” written by D.M. Larson at VES on March 18 and 19. The play takes place in an all-female prison that can be compared loosely to a lighter blending of two popular dramas, Prison Break and Orange is the New Black. It featured a ditzy kleptomaniac played by Judy Walsh, a bumbling love-struck guard played by Gary Walsh, a movie star turned convict played by Alana Pinkoski and two other prisoners, quirky Donna played by MyVahna Ishaq and intimidating inmate 12006 played by Marie Kluthe. Audrey Chesterman, (L) an administrative clerk at Eastalta Co-op, received a $100 cheque to donate toward the charity of her choice through the Community Involvement Program at Eastalta Co-op in acknowledgement of her volunteer work at the Vermilion Heritage Museum. Community and Member Engagement Marketing Coordinator, Jillian Dumais said in order to qualify for the program, an employee must have given a minimum of 100 hours of service to one, or more, non-profit, charitable, or community groups in the past year.

Chesterman said she will be donating the money to the Museum and that it will most likely go toward operating costs. “Volunteering is great,” said Chesterman. “I get to spend time with like-minded people that like to give back to the community.” The Vermilion Heritage Museum will be holding an upcoming Open House in April, and Chesterman said they are always looking for more volunteers to help out. “It has opened a lot of other doors in the community for me,” she added. Sheila’s Brush has always followed St. Patrick’s Day and is a legend with many different versions. Many people say that Sheila was the wife of St. Patrick, while others say she was his sister, mother, or his mistress.

that Sheila was the wife of Patrick and being Irish and a redhead to boot she had the fiery personality we all know redheads can have. According to the legend Patrick had left her at home to go with the boys for a pint at a local tavern and when he returned home for the night two-sheets to the wind, he was met with a very ticked off Sheila, who went after him with a broom, hence the brush part of the legend. So, as the legend goes, Sheila’s Brush is one of the last storms of winter and that the infamous Sheila is brushing winter away with her broom.

This winter has been one that I have never encountered since moving to Vermilion 10 years ago. I would not even-

call it a winter, we only had from what I can remember, two cold snaps and they didn’t last long enough to make even me hate it. Our so called winter seemed like a lengthy fall except for the small blanket of snow that has covered the ground.

When I woke up last Wednesday to see the crappy day it was, the first thing that popped into my mind was the legend of Sheila’s Brush, and hopefully this would be the last significant snowfall for the year; the thought of that brings a smile because I am not a winter lover at all. I would be just as happy if I never saw a flake of the white stuff all year round; though maybe I would miss it if that did happen as I do like a little snow at Christmas time.

Either way, we have been blessed with a winter that let us, for the most part, run around in lighter weight jackets and didn’t require the heavy boots, hats and mittens most of us hate being bundled up in. I for one will take this mild, low snowfall winter we just had any day over the -30 weather and snow up to our butts winter.

Well, Ms. Sheila if that was you, welcome to Alberta. I hope you have brushed away winter with this last dump of snow and wind, because I am ready for shorts and sunny days. However, some nice warm rain in April would be nice because like the saying goes, April showers bring May flowers and some much needed moisture for our farmers.

Myrnam 4-H Multi-Club March Report

Our club public speaking was February 18 at the Myrnam Senior’s Centre, that was our day to start speaking and presenting to see who is going to districts. For senior presentations, Tyson Pashulka got 1st, and Riley Pashulka got 2nd. Jaeanna Saskiw got 1st place in junior presentations. Bailey Dymytriw got 1st and Seth Trynchuk got 2nd for their intermediate speeches. In the senior speeches, Laurel Trynchuk got 1st and Austin Campbell got 2nd. In the Junior speeches, Harlen Saskiw got 1st and Caitlin Jacula got 2nd.

Our club members and families were sad to hear of the passing of long-time Myrnam 4-H supporter Doug Milot of Lakeland Trenching. At our March 9 meeting, our members voted to donate $100 to Haying in the 30’s in memory of Mr. Milot.

Not even spring yet and on the daily walk almost a week ago with the pup Miss Oohohh, we circled the duck pond out back. We both stopped together and looked up to greet our spring-starved eyes on the big fluffy “pussy willows”.

The “pussy willows” nickname for the furry buds or “catkins” on the Salix Willow trees native to the wetlands of Canada … male willow trees bud the pussy willows much earlier than the female willow trees. It was an awesome sight and may be the earliest I have seen pussy willows in my lifetime.

On the same day later, as I worked in the shop, Miss Oohohh was barking wildly; something that is rare for her as she barks very little. I ran outside to see what was bothering her. What I saw amazed me; here was a large garter snake all coiled up with Miss Oohohh in its face telling on it. I guess it didn’t belong there. Amazed, I picked it up,

petted it and let it go in the shop. Again, this has to be the earliest I have seen a garter snake out soaking up the sun; with the garter snake and Wilma the weasel in the shop, I should never have mice or bugs. I hope they co-exist and not have an epic battle for mouse territory. Although, the snake only eats very little and Wilma eats like a horse, but is well fed, they both stay out of view from most visiting, unless I call Wilma, but I’m thankful for that.

This past weekend even the honey bees were out in full force, but it’s going to be a while until they find blooming flowers other than the Crocus, which is on the list for my next adventures.

I have yet to see my silly Robins that come home every year to nest; my daughter saw flocks of them a month ago, maybe mine is wiser. I also predict we will, unfortunately, see the pesky mosquitoes very early this year.

Early on in the past week, I planned another ice fishing adventure which may be the last; however, the extremely warm weather brought open water even on ponds.

The Battle River is flowing, although, mostly over any standing ice, but is open in big areas free of any ice, so, needless to say, any ice is a hazard at this time. We may see record break ups on big lakes if the weather trend continues.

So, with ice fishing off the list, which I would have had to leave Miss Oohohh home because of the last experience on the ice, I wanted to include her, because she’s my buddy, and I would miss her.

Another first is the deer hanging on to their antlers so late due to the mild winter and good nutrition as feed is readily available with no snow, but they are starting.

Out of 12 Mule bucks I have seen in the last week, only two had one antler missing, but Saturday would be the day antlers would fall like rain…right? So we packed up for an entire day in the woods again.

Miss Oohohh just had her 5 month birthday on March 11th; still a puppy, however growing in leaps and bounds…literally, she has already outgrown her training packs and now is fitted with her big girl packs. The big girl, adult “saddle packs,” will hold a lot more stuff so; an entire day with the packs would be a final test in her

training. I loaded up the packs, two one litre collapsible bottles full of water one for each side to distribute weight.

Even though there’s plenty of melt water available, I wanted the weight for training. Added was two collapsible dog dishes, one for water the other for food, large Ziploc bags of dog food and snacks; we could survive for days if we had too.

I stuffed the packs with other things like a leash, bundle of rope, spare knife, etc., extra gloves, a warm hat and stuff we didn’t need...the kitchen sink wouldn’t fit. The packed packs combined weighed near 15 lbs / 7 KG. I also carried a pack and walking stick, but it was empty compared to hers. If it got to be too much, I would share her load. On arrival at our exploring adventure area, she was excited to put on the packs as it meant a long walk.

It’s very true that the Alaskan Malamute dog is happiest when it’s working and on an adventure. Miss Oohohh was go-go non-stop all day long, I thought that the pack would slow her down in the thick bush or constantly get unbalanced but I was like a proud father, she did so outstanding, just like she was born with packs on. Sometimes the packs would get lop-sided, but she was smart enough to rub that side up against a tree to straighten the packs by herself.

We stopped for lunch and a break, enjoyed a beautiful day, almost too warm for us, but the sunshine was welcome. I removed her packs, but she didn’t stay idle for long, there was much to explore.

However, we did stay still long enough to take a couple “selfie” pictures.

We didn’t find much for fresh antler sheds, a couple of older sheds, and a winter kill moose skull, but we had a wonderful time outdoors. Miss Oohohh did fantastic, did I mention I was so proud of her.

It was evident the deer are stubborn this year with their crowns, but that is just fine, as it is a great excuse to get out there as soon as possible again, this past weekend is the first day of spring…enjoy!

My Dad was a baseball fan of the first order. It was a national pastime where he came from and in the district round about his new home, there were many of like persuasion and of course they formed a baseball team of farm boys who loved the game!!

Now in those early days, opportunities to get together and have a day visiting and comparing the daily happening etc, have a baseball game to watch seemed to be the catalyst that brought the communities together.

As the originals got too old to play, the younger generation would step up and keep the team viable. People can remember Jack Lysons who played a solid game into his sixties and got to have his sons on the same team!!

I remember a grey haired old gentleman was escorting his youngest daughter into the yard, when a ground ball went by us kids and headed for this, looked like, really old guy. Well, he stepped across and daftly scooped up the ground ball and winged it accurately to the closest kid. You should have seen the eyes pop at that display.

My uncle Fred, pitched baseball and he coached me once he discovered I could throw accurately and fairly hard. Lots of things to learn. That’s how it was all of us at school played at the game with the idea that we’d someday make the senior team.

My Dad never played ball with us boys, but he did buy us a good catcher’s mitt, so I could practice my pitching and we enjoyed his presence at any games he could attend. And so as years sped by we realized our original baseball was fading out and the term “Fast Ball” took its place.

Here are a few statistics compiled by B a t t e r e d W o m e n ’s Support Services: In Au s t r a l i a , C a n a d a , Israel, South Africa, and the United States, between 40 and 70 percent of female murder victims were killed by their intimate partners. Globally, the most common form of violence experienced by women is physical violence inflicted by an intimate partner. Across Canada, a woman is killed by her intimate partner every six days. Every six days.

“I own you now.” One woman relays her new husband’s declaration on their wedding day. The concepts of ownership and control feature prominently in abusers, ac cording to personal accounts provided by sur vivors in Shelly Saywell’s new documentary, The War at Home.

It’s difficult to understand how someone who professes to love and cherish a partner, as so many abusers reportedly do, can concurrently exhibit vicious and hateful behaviours toward that same partner. ‘Love’, I suppose, can manifest in many forms. Who though, doesn’t seek the security of it? Who among us hasn’t sometimes compromised to acquire and hold onto some form of what we perceive as love and belonging? Many women become trapped in the paradox, perhaps at first wanting to believe that love will overcome the other, darker aspects of a relationship. They imagine that an abusive partner will change. Too late, they may find it next to impossible to escape. It can happen to anyone.

The combination of fear and shame play key roles in ensuring that what goes on behind closed doors remains secret.

ment of self-esteem in abused persons over time. If there is financial dependence, targets of abuse might convince themselves they have no choice but to stay. Safety of our children is paramount; women may remain silent about an abusive relationship to protect them. But among the thousands of reasons abused persons (I acknowledge that women are not the sole targets) choose to hold onto the secret rather than seek help, possibly the two most common are: (1) fear of being judged by their community and (2) fear of being disregarded by the judicial system. There remains a stigma associated with domestic violence and this sad reality works in favour of the perpetrators.

Currently, there is no national program to protect women against domestic violence. In the documentary, there are examples of past responses to matters of domestic violence by our judiciary. While it’s unfair to criticize the outcome of any court case without having access to all the evidence presented, the man charged with Assault Causing Bodily Harm who received a paltry $50.00 dollar fine for severely beating and almost killing his spouse does seem out of line.

A group of women, including six hundred survivors of domestic violence, have come together to form the Women’s Centre for Social Justice in Toronto. They gather testimony from women who have endured domestic violence and study the response of our justice system to such cases. It’s a movement promoting awareness and working toward establishing preventative measures, but also to improve the responsibility of those working in the justice system such that the response more realistically reflects the seriousness of the crimes committed.

Understanding, acknowledging, and taking action on the psychology of abuse

deserves---no, it demands---attention.

Women are our mothers, sisters, daughters. We are the nurturers, the givers of life to all humankind. None of us ought live in fear for our personal safety. No one ought bear the secret of an abusive relationship alone in the darkness. We must speak the truth of our circumstances, even if we’re afraid. Raise our voices, even if they’re

shaky. Reach for help from a person of trust, from one of the many organizations in our communities ready to support us.

There are willing, compassionate hands extended right now. Others who will stand with us until we regain the strength to stand on our own. None of us is anyone else’s property. And getting knocked around is not even remotely close to a sign of ‘love’.

Winning Season The Vermilion Credit Union Midget Tigers played the second game of their best of three series against Lloydminster Eagle Well Service Blazers at the Vermilion Stadium on March 18. The Tier 1 team defeated their opponents with a convincing 8-0 victory. They defeated the Lloydminster team by a score of 7- 1 in the first game of the series. Manager Lindsey Bates said, “The Vermilion Credit Union Midget Tigers had a very successful year, with 32 wins and 4 losses. The team was Zone 2 Provincials champs, NEAHL League champs and won the Stettler Midget Tournament. All year long we were the targets of other teams because of our strong play. The players were committed to winning and proved just that with our success. Many teams tried to intimidate us in order to compete with us but that tactic had very little success.

The low oil prices are continuing to take their toll on families. I recently had a kindergarten teacher in my shop telling me how hungry many of her students are because their lunch is a little less than needed. She has been bringing extra snacks to have on hand, purchased with her own money. This situation is in every grade all the way to high school. Another teacher shared with me various ways teachers are making sure there is food for students, including donating their own money to a fund for the purchase of food. I am so proud of all the ef for ts and c are c oming from so many teachers, to help their students and families get through this difficult time.

Times like this require stretching the food dollar to its outermost limits.

This is something that our grandmother s and great- grandmother s k new how to do well. Spring is coming and planting a garden, and a potato patch is one of the best ways to have a lot of wholesome food. I remember both grandmothers teaching me how to turn foods from the farm garden or basic pantry staples into great meals.

Pr o te i n f r o m m e at i s t h e m o s t expensive part of the budget. The meat budget can be trimmed for example by stretching a pound of ground meat by making a chilli with lots of beans.

If pork or chicken burger is a better price than beef, then choose that.

healthy meal by boiling the bones for a soup broth. Simply add a few tablespoons of vinegar, salt and pepper and boil for 4 or 5 hours to extract nutritious bone-building calcium, the great flavours and other beneficial nutrients.

When done strain out the bones to get the broth, add any leftover chicken, chopped onion, carrots, celer y and either precooked noodles or cooked rice. If no meat is left over, you can ad d a few c o oke d beans. When a legume and a grain are combined, they make a complete protein like meat.

Legumes are foods such as kidney bean, lentils, black beans, chickpeas, peanuts, peanut butter and cans of pork and beans. Examples of grain for food combining are bread, pasta, corn, oats and rice. Adding a little bit of meat, eggs or dair y to either the grain group or the legume group will provide the necessary amino acids to make a complete protein. Examples of food combining for complete protein are a peanut butter sandwich, casseroles that combine beans and pasta, soups with rice and beans, hummus and crackers. Crackers can be easily made with butter, flour and seasoning.

Other examples using small amounts of meat are: a stir fry served over rice, a stew with bread, beef barley soup or rice pudding. Another budget friendly meal is to cook pasta with some frozen peas and carrots, drain and stir in sautéed onion, salt and pepper and a can of tuna or a can of beans.

Other nutrient dense low-cost proteins are canned salmon, tuna, herrings, sardines and fresh or frozen liver.

Never underestimate the power of eggs and potatoes to deliver hunger stopping energy. Eggs also contain

complete protein for the cost of about 19 cents a ser ving. The great thing about eggs is that they are so versatile and portable. Hard boiled eggs can be taken to work or school as part of a nutritious meal or snack. Eggs can be turned into meals such as frittatas, quiche, devilled eggs, omelettes, egg salad sandwiches and scrambled eggs and toast. When you are craving something creamy, nothing beats m a s h e d p ot ato e s o r p ot ato s o u p.

Potatoes can be very filling for a low cost and can be prepared in a multitude of ways. Potatoes are an excellent ingredient to add to stews and soups to increase their heartiness.

Forget the processed boxed cereals and prepackaged instant oats if you are on a tight budget. A better choice is old-fashioned large flake oats, as the cost per serving is much lower at 19 cents a serving and the food is free of additives. The large flake will hold off hunger longer and deliver all the health benefits of oats. Add a little milk and bit of brown sugar and you have a great breakfast or anytime snack.

The core macro nutrients the body needs for health are protein, carbohydrates and fats. While there are lowcost solutions for healthy proteins and carbs, unfortunately, healthy fats tend to be more expensive. Top picks are olive oil, avocado and but ter. Less costly but still great fats can be found in egg yolks, sunflower seeds, canned fish, peanuts and peanut butter. When selecting peanut butter read the label to be sure it is not hydrogenated. Try to avoid vegetable oils and all hydrogenated products.

In addition to balancing macro nutrients, micronutrients need to be included

as well. Vitamin C is very important for many metabolic reactions in the body.

It is needed daily. Best sources are oranges, red peppers, kiwi broccoli and kale. Leaf lettuce has more nutrients than iceberg lettuce. Additional top micronutrient picks are sweet potatoes, onions, leafy greens, dairy, apples, bananas and tomatoes. Try to plan your meals to include all your macronutrients, and then add in fruits and vegetable for micronutrients. Make a meal plan on paper and then shop the sales so your food dollar can go farther.

Our great grandmothers knew very well that we all like a little something special in our diet, and they were masters at whipping up dessert or a cake with minimal low-cost ingredients. Other healthy snacks on a budget are popcorn, peanuts and homemade crackers (they are delicious) and don’t forget an apple a day keeps the doctor away.

At a recent party, I attended, we were all talking about the state of the economy due to the drop in oil prices.

We compared today’s economy to the one we grew up in and the coping skills our parents used to get by and survive in challenging times. We recalled how our parents dealt with feeding a lot of kids away from home, and we smiled and nodded remembering the baloney sandwiches that we all had eaten. My friend said “my dad would just get a loaf of bread and some baloney and mustard, and that is what we had if we were away from home. “ No one ate convenience foods; all the food was cooked at home, using low-cost basic ingredients. Even today cooking at home from scratch is one of the best and healthiest ways to stretch the food dollar.

The Street Rod Technologies program is now in its third year and currently has 14 students working on cars from the frames up. “ We strip them right down,” said Ribey.

Dream Course

In the Street Rod workshop is the frame of a ’69 Firebird that will be fully restored by the students, then put up for auction.

“It should go for between $35,000 and $40,000” said Ribey. That money will be reinvested into the program through a scholarship.

“For some reason ’69 is a magical year when it comes to cars,” said Ribey.

“Anything before ’71 is desirable,” he added.

“It was a dream I had from when I was a kid,” said Robert.

Robert, who is from Quebec, came to Vermilion specifically for the SRT program at Lakeland College.

“As far as I know it is the only one in the country building hot rods,” he said.

Robert said he hopes to have the floor of the car finished by the time he is done the course, and that he will paint the classic car either candy apple red or black.

Another student in the program, Cody Ball, said he loves the course and is still deciding what he will do when he graduates.

“It prepares you for work as a first year autobody apprenticeship prepper, or work in a restoration shop,” he said.

“I’m also working on another apprenticeship right now, so there are lots of opportunities out there,” he added.

Ribey said even if you’re not planning on a career in the autobody industry, “It’s a pretty cool place to come if you’re into cars,”

The Open House and Seed Pick up day on March 18 at W2 Land and Cattle had a great turnout!

Dan Orchard unfortunately turned up sick so Slav Zukiwski with Dupont Pioneer filled in and talked about Clubroot. He played a great video from the Canola Council about how Clubroot spreads and infects plants. ‘Even if you don’t have a known clubroot infection, growing a resistant hybrid is a great preventative measure as it helps to keep the spore load from reproducing.’

Steak, potatoes, salads and homemade pies were served over the noon hour, ‘the lunch was a great hit, and I didn’t hear a single complaint!’ said Waltz.

Doug Moisey with Dupont Pioneer then shared his knowledge on Corn Agronomy. ‘Corn does not exercise the ‘catch up effect’ like we often see in wheat or canola if a plant is delayed at getting out of the ground it will forever be behind, which is why proper seeding speed and seed depth is so crucial ‘ stated Doug. ‘Being aware of how your

The Amazing Race

The 2016 Amazing Race dashed off to an excited start from the Town Hall in Vermilion on March 19.

The race, organized by The Good Life Institute, had 26 teams in total each with 4 individuals, 21 teams more than last year’s race. The teams participated in mental and physical challenges at different locations throughout the Town of Vermilion. St. Jerome’s Gymnastics’ Day will be taking place this Thursday, March 24 at 1 p.m. in the gym. Come out and cheer your favourite house, Cartier, Fraser or Mackenzie. Grade 4-12 students have been working hard over the last several weeks at noon-hour to prepare for this exciting annual event. Good luck to all the houses as they present their Swedish Drill, Pyramids, individual and dual events.

On Tuesday, March 15, students had the pleasure of listening to Father Paul Nicholson talk about forgiveness, and God’s love and mercy. After the service students were able to practice the sacrament of reconciliation with Father Paul and Father Roger.

Grade 7-12 students boarded buses early on the morning of Wednesday, March 16 to travel to Kinosoo Ridge outside Cold Lake for a day of skiing and snowboarding. The students had a wonderful day on the slopes as snow cascaded from the sky throughout the day. Thank you to all the staff members who took the time to drive bus, organize the day or chaperone the students at the slopes.

The Learning S u p p o r t Te a m (LST) was in VES visiting several classrooms on March 16.

During the 2015/2016 school year, each BTPS school and teacher will benefit from the support and expertise of this team on a regular basis. This team’s priority is to build teacher/school staff instructional capacity by working with teachers in the classroom. The LST is comprised of individuals with expertise in the areas of behaviour, occupational therapy and speech/language pathology as they relate to the education of all students. The LST supports the entire school environment in meeting the needs of students and teachers.

Parent Teacher interviews were held on March 16. Then on March 17, we had our Celebration of Learning. This was an opportunity for parents and families to tour our school and see just what an amazing place their children are attending. It was great to see such a terrific turnout.

Again this year, each grade 1 student set up their own traps on March 16 in hopes of catching a leprechaun. On the morning of March 17, they entered their classrooms to find a mess left by the leprechauns, but not a single leprechaun was caught in the traps. I guess they will have to try again next year.

Some classrooms were treated to a variety of green food and green treats, as well as chocolate coins. Green was the colour of choice on Thursday with green shirts, green hats, green socks and green hair seen throughout the school.

Thursday was the day the Elementary students we able to move back to their newly renovated classrooms. The move went exceptionally well with the help of the Phys. Ed 20/30 students who moved four classrooms in two periods. Staff worked throughout the day to get their classrooms organized, functional and looking fabulous. The next phase of renovations include the kindergarten, and office space of the school Who could imagine that a cow would produce 40 litres (10 big jugs) of milk in one day? The kindergarten children learned so many interesting facts about cows, sheep and horses as they toured the Lakeland College Farms last week. The children were thrilled to pet the wee lambs. They were able to watch the horses training in the riding arena and were even invited to pet Hawk, a barrel-racing champ. The hands on trip even allowed for the children to take home some wool, which Joanne had sheered right in front of them.

They will hang it in the trees for the birds to use in their nests this spring.

Congratulations to our Sr. High Basketball teams for a wonderful season of eventful action. On March 11 and 12 the Sr. Boys were in Marwayne competing in zones while the Sr. Girls traveled to Glendon. The Sr. Boys were able to defeat Paradise Valley, and Marwayne before they met Mallaig in the finals. The Spartans battled hard from beginning to end, but were unable to come away victorious. Congratulations to the boys for bringing home Silver.

The Sr. Girls won their first game in zones, but were unable to win the semi-final match.

They finished the tournament victorious bringing home the bronze medal. Thank you to the coaches Mr. Dave Sader and Ms. Brittany Partington for all the work and time they have put into the players during this Photo submitted season.

The Klondike Relays are fast approaching. On April 5, a squad of 35 athletic grade 4-6 students, accompanied by Mr. Harvey and Mr. Beecroft, will be travelling to Edmonton. There, they will compete against almost 30 other schools in various relays and field events. This is an annual competition, and VES has always competed well

The Innisfree-Minburn 4-H Beef club held their February meeting on March 3 at the Innisfree Millennium building.

Public speaking was held on February 21 at the Minburn hall. Results were: Junior: 1st. Lemonee Kostynuk, 2nd Camille Kassian; Intermediate: 1st Tyson Rudolf, 2nd Courtney Cannan; Senior:

1st Megan Rudolf, 2nd Quinn Hlus. The Judges where very good and the club appreciates them taking their time to judge our speaking. The Junior judges were: Brenda Jackson, Karen Nedzielski, and Debbie McMann. The Intermediate judges were: Pete Conway, Teresa Berg and Tiffany Tomlinson. The Senior judges were: Bob Logan, Marlene Whitten and Colleen Berg. Congratulations to all of our member speakers. On Saturday, Febuary 27th Lemonee Kostynuk, Tyson Rudolf and Megan Rudolf all

went to the district 4-H Public Speaking in Mannville. Both Tyson and Megan won 1st in their categor y and went on to Regional’s in Bonnyville. Tyson won 1st in the Intermediate category.

March 2nd the club held their next meeting in Minburn. They discussed the charity heifer, Spring Fling, and ideas for buyer’s gifts for achievement day.

We are sending a team to the Western Canadian Judging competition. Those people are Quinn Hlus, Laramie Anderson, Megan Rudolph and Logan Nott.

Over the last few weeks, Dewberry has been host to many instances of stardom!

From badminton to hockey and scientific inquiry to mathematical intellect, the evidence of fame spread through the environment like a wildfire.

Senior badminton players certainly gave it their all as they hosted their own tournament, March 5th. Over 150 games were played but the success was not just in the winners of the tournament, rather it was in the effort the team members put into behind the scenes. Awesome job, every-

Nicole Dennill and her U15 volleyball team received a bronze medal for their efforts at the Subway Saskatchewan Cup in Saskatoon. Jace Weidmark, Jenna Bowman and Jacy Soloy also ventured out with their U14 team to the same tournament and played some fantastic volleyball.

Way to go, girls!!

A few Pee Wee hockey team members arrived home, champions. Brenton Romanchuk, Clay Radesh and Ethan Warawa showed collaboration with their tier III team and earned the title of League Champions! What is more amazing is that they were undefeated throughout this season. Cruise Bensmiller and his tier I team shined brighter than ever during their provincial playoffs, bringing back a provincial championship title!! Fantastic hockey, boys!

star skaters, hit the ice for the performance of their season. Liv Bowman, Cade Elliott, Jordyn Holmen, Grayson Skakun, Hannah Rewuski, Trevis Rewuski, Drayden Skakun, Sadie Bazinet, Harlie Bazinet, Cash Bowman, Nyla Radesh, Laramie, Jelena and Presley Parr, Jillian Stevenson, Daneca Goldsmith, and Keyauna Parr participated in the annual skating carnival. With bright shining faces and sparkling costumes they glided across the icy stage showing off their spectacular moves!

Boats and Pi at school? What’s up with that? Well, the grade 1/2 class got a little hands on experience with building things that float. Not only did they get their hands wet but they used a lot of scientific inquiry to make improvements to their inventions.

Learning can be fun, especially with wet things! Whipped cream is wet, too! It’s also a great way to make sure you correctly

answer a math question. Staff members and one student, Kaiden Brett, volunteered their facetime to the cause of National Pi Day! Panther teams competed to see who could quickly and correctly answer mathematical questions. The impending wrong answer was awarded the chance at a pie in the face. This was a delicious way to practice up on basic math skills.

Juno award winning singer and songwriter, Kinnie Starr performed her unique style of “hip hop aggro grove” music, for the school on March 15th! Kinnie is a shining example of how hard work and perseverance can get you places. She sang but also sent the students a message, that no matter how old you are, you can always pursue your dreams. She also told them that the more effort you put into something, the more you get out of it. This is a message that can be applied to all facets of life, not just your dreams.

We a p p r e c i ate a l l f a m i l i e s a n d community members who sent out a challenge to help our Grade 6 students collect 325 pairs of socks during the Sockathon! These socks were donated to Hope Mission in Edmonton to be given to the homeless and struggling. The Hope Mission was very thankful and said that these would last about one day in terms of handing them out to those in need. What an eye opener and learning experience for our students!

These students are participating in the Free the Children Campaign “WE Create Change” where each classroom collects some loose change that will be donated to supporting a sustainable water source to a community in Nicaragua. Send in some loose coins to support our cause. “Your Change Can Make A Difference!”

We will be sending a team of Grade 4-6 students to the Klondike Relay in Edmonton, on April 6, 2016. Students who were interested met with Mrs. McCullough and will be training for the event over the next few weeks. Students will compete in events that include ball

throw, standing long jump and relay races. We are excited to be sending a team to this event this year!

Jump Rope for Heart will kick off next Tuesday with forms being sent home with students who wish to participate in this fundraiser for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Our final Jump event will be held on April 18. Please have all money and envelopes returned to the school prior to April 15.

The ski trip to Table Mountain will occur on Thursday, March 24. We have 60 students ready to hit the slopes! It will be an early morning for our students, as the bus will be pulling out of the parking

lot at 7 o’clock and we plan to be back at the school by 5 p.m.

Report cards for Grade 7 – 12 come out right after the Easter Break and secondary parent teacher interviews are on Thursday, April 7th from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Please phone if you wish to have an interview with one of your teachers.

Our PAC (Parent Advisory Council) has started their fundraiser with Vesey Seeds. Information has been sent home with students, but if you want, you are welcome to stop by the school to grab one of their catalogues. The fundraiser runs until April 5th.
