“It has been going on for more than 20 years,” said Bonspiel Coordinator, John Lunty. “It’s fun and it’s fellowship.”

Opening Ceremonies took place on March 4 as the 24 colourful teams and their sponsors were piped in by the Lakeland Pipe and Drums Band.

A f t e r w a r d , A s s i s t a n t G o v e r n o r, Brenda Lee invited Governor Tim Shields to say a few words.

“Sally (wife) and I are thrilled to be bac k at w hat I b eli eve i s t he fine st Rotary fellowship that I’ve ever had the good fortune to be part of,” said Shields.

“Thank you to Vermilion for hosting us and a special thanks to all of our sponsors, and my team, MacDuff.”

When Mayor MacDuff took the mic he drew laughs from the crowd when he welcomed ever yone to Vermilion and encouraged all in attendance to spend a lot of money during their stay here.

Shots of whiskey were distributed during the ceremony for a curler’s toast, before the fir st ro c k was thrown by Shields, highlighting the special relationship between Rotary and curling.

The Vermilion Home Expo will take place this year at the Vermilion Stadium on April 16 and 17. Home Expo’s Coordinator, Michelle Feist says there is an exciting line up of special guests attending, along with a wide variety of local vendors signed up.

“The feedback has been positive so far.

We are hoping for more vendors to participate as well as more foot traffic,” said Feist. “So far we have 40 vendors to date, but we are aiming for 70. We are encouraging local businesses to take part so that they can reach a new customer base and get their name out there more.”

Terry Grant, star of the highly rated reality TV show Mantracker, will be attending the Expo.

“He will be there all weekend hanging out, meeting people and mingling with the crowd,” said Feist. “We have everything from make-up booths to home and heating coming out. We are trying to get more vehicles and we have bulk space available for trailers. We are also trying to get people from Wainwright, Vegreville and Vermilion’s surrounding areas to come in and participate.”

East Meets West In “The Harry Zone”

Musical meditation, musical massage, and musical mysticism are just a few of the terms that have been used to describe the Vermilion Folk Club’s upcoming performer, Harry Manx.

Manx, who was born on the Isle of Man, was raised in Canada and left during his teens to live in Europe, Japan, India, and Brazil, where he performed on street corners, in cafes, and bars, perfecting his musical style.

In the 80s, he was swept away by Indian music and studied for five-years with Indian musician, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, a Grammy award winner for his work on A Meeting by the River with the legendary Ry Cooder.

Bhatt gifted his custom-made Mohan Veena (20-stringed sitar/guitar hybrid) to Manx which led to his now signature “east-meets-west style of music,” as Manx blends the Mohan Veena with traditional blues sounds in his original songs.

Manx said on his website that a live setting provides the opportunity to bridge the gap between “heavenly” India and “earthy” American blues.

“Indian music moves inward and it is traditionally used in religious ceremonies and meditation, because it puts you in another place. But Western music has

the ability to move out, into celebration and dance,” he added. “So when we play the Indian stuff on stage, it has a tendency to draw people into something really deep; they’ll get kind of quiet and spacey. Then we’ll play some more Western music, and it grounds them once more, they sort of come out of the mood the Indian music has put them in and get into the performance...my goal has always been to draw the audience as deep as possible into the music.”

Manx also shines when it comes to performing covers of other artists’ music. He does a unique version of Bruce Springsteen’s I’m on Fire, which prompted the Boss himself to say, “Watching Harry play tonight I feel like I learned something new...” after seeing Harry perform at the International Guitar Festival in NYC. Manx has released nine albums in an eight-year span and has received seven Maple Blues Awards, and his albums have received five Juno nominations.

Manx’s Alberta tour includes Calgary, Edmonton, and Vermilion where he will be appearing at the Vermilion Legion Hall on Tuesday, March 22. Surprise Second Trip To The World’s For Baking Robots

The Baking Robots team, Kadin Morritt and Rhys Racine, received the surprising news this week that they are invited to this year’s World Vex Competition that will take place in Louisville, Ky in April.

Last year the Robots placed high enough in the Provincials at the high school level to advance to the World’s. This year’s challenge, which dealt mostly with programming, left them out of the running, having placed eighth out of 41 teams, and fourth in programming skills - or so they thought.

This week Vex Robotics contacted the team to verify the age of team members Kadin and Rhys. Both boys were 13-yearsold during the provincial competition.

“In Alberta, there are no competitions held at any other level than high school, so the boys have always competed at the high school level, even though their age puts them in the middle school category,” said Kim Morritt, Kadin’s mom.

The age of the team members, coupled with the fact that they had met some other competition requirements, led to Vex’s decision to give them an Excellence Award for Middle School for the Alberta Provincial Championship, which comes with an invitation to the World’s.

“Last year we didn’t use any sensors at all, it was more about driving,” added Rhys.

This year the team needs to learn a new program language, RobotC, and write the code themselves to ensure Cookie meets the challenge of being able to do more than one thing at a time, like driving straight and accurately throwing balls into a net.

The team will be rebuilding Cookie before the World’s. The Robots said if they didn’t have the experience they had at World’s last year, they might have considered giving up.

“These two boys have set out to learn robots on their own,” added Kim. “They do not get credit for this in school; in fact they give up their evenings and weekends to work on Cookie...they spend hours using trial and error to figure things out.”

Kim said the Baking Robots have been generously sponsored by area businesses and the Robots have also held baking fundraisers to help offset the costs associated with getting to the competitions, and paying for parts for Cookie. Council Approves Funding For More Murals Marie Conboy Reporter

Town Council passed the motion on March 1 giving permission to allow a new sports-themed mural for the south wall of the curling rink and four large individual sports figures (a hockey player, a curler, a figure skater, and a lacrosse player) for the stadium’s exterior.

Council donated $6,000 to support the Mural Project on March 1, stating that the funding will be taken from Legislative Reserve.

Community Services Director, Shawn Bell told Council that the committee stated, at a mural project meeting held at the Recreation Centre, that they want a sportsthemed mural for the south exterior wall of

the curling rink for 2016.

“The Mural Project Committee is in the process of applying for a matching grant to fund the mural. For the murals around town, each business that has a mural on its building agreed to pay 30 per cent of the cost of the mural,” explained Bell.

Muralist Barry Overn, who was commissioned to paint four murals for the town last summer, will be commissioned again to paint another mural on the curling rink and four sports figures on the stadium and arena this summer.

Keri Pullyblank, Chair of the Mural Project Committee said last week that Overn will be finishing the mural on the side of the Bargain Store wall first, as he didn’t get to finish it last year due to bad weather.

The cost of the mural on the curling rink will be $16,000 - $18,000, plus the cost of the individual sports figures, bringing the total cost to $32,000.

“This all depends on us getting the grant,” said Pullyblank. “We have $16,000 so if we get the matching grant, it will cover the cost of what we will be doing this summer.”

As we are all aware, our economy has gone down the proverbial toilet, and it has begun to affect families in our area.

Families are finding it more difficult to provide even the necessities for their children. While I know, many will sit in judgement and say that it is the fault of the parents for not saving for the rainy day; that my friends is not always the case.

Many families have family members that have been laid off from their place of employment since last fall. Their employment insurance benefits are ending or have already ended. As well, some families may be just down on their luck and

require help once in a while. Whatever the reason, no one has a right to judge someone else’s situation until you have walked a mile in their shoes.

EI is only a percentage of your regular pay to a maximum allowable rate of $1680 per month, and that does not even come close to covering all the normal household bills. Many families have to dip into their savings, and that doesn’t last forever either.

Some may say, well they can always go on welfare, well let me tell you that is not an easy benefit to receive and doesn’t even come close to providing for necessities.

So, let’s take a look at it for a minute.

An average house mortgage or rent is between $1200 - 2500 a month and in some instances even higher. If you were a one-person income your $1680/ month EI isn’t going to go very far and in some

cases, it wouldn’t cover your rent/mortgage, and that is just one example.

I know people will say you have to live within your means and not be big spenders, well spending that kind of money for a place to put a roof over your head and your children’s heads is certainly not being big spenders, it is just the basics. Even if there are two incomes in the family, once you have the main income contributor drop down to half or more of their regular pay, there isn’t a whole lot left to buy groceries, pay car payments, car insurance, life insurance, gas/electricity, etc.

It has come to my attention there is a new resource in town that is available as a one-time gift for families with children who may be struggling for whatever reason, and I wanted to take this opportunity to get the word out there. It is called Hearts and Hands, and while I am not aware of

all the circumstances surrounding it, I do feel it is important to let the members of the community know that it is available and completely private.

The service provides a one-time gift of food, personal hygiene products, basic household items, baby formula and diapers and will try to meet the families needs as items are available and is strictly confidential. The poster states that all you have to do is call 780-581-0521 leave a message including a first name and last initial, number of adults and children in the family, any special dietary or other needs, the urgency of the situation and address for the items to be dropped off.

I do feel as though this is a beneficial service to our community and hope that anyone who is in need due to special circumstances can make use of this generous one-time gift.

As we sat in a snow bank watching the world go by, I had an arm around my new buddy and with a couple kisses on the cheek from her, words didn’t have to be spoken to know we were both enjoying the same thing.

I was also doing a lot of thinking on the way back to the truck several kms away, I could do this for a living…and should.

Folks, I don’t talk about my career in life much, but I will share this with you.

I have reached full retirement term work for the Department Of National Defence. I have served a full 35 year service term as of February 16 2016, I was never in the military, but served alongside and for them.

Now that I have that full 35 year service I can receive full retirement benefits, which is substantial in today’s work force, something that as a young man worked for in the future.

Now that time is here, although I didn’t make a fortune in the oil industry in Alberta, I do have a retirement future; benefits include 75 per cent of my wage, medical, prescription’s, dental etc.

Like most of us I enjoyed a decent and healthy economy in Alberta all my life, and with a pension I am a lot better off than most, that like me, even should have invested more into the future.

Time goes by in what seems like a flash, and before we know it many of us are reaching that retirement age. Looking back I would have probably invested more in RRSP’s and the like.

However, I will get by quite comfortably, and there are things I love to do in the outdoors that can supplement me if need be. I won’t be drinking champagne and eating caviar on the coast of Hawaii,

but am just as happy sitting in that snow bank with a good buddy.

My wife Roxanne was never one for much travel if her feet have to get too far off the ground, meaning she absolutely hates and refuses to fly, and I am not a long distance driver, so adventures stay pretty close to home.

One trip we agree on is a simple scenic trip through Alberta’s and British Colombia’s majestic mountains to the west coast with a few layovers to enjoy it via a scenic rail train.

I have thoroughly enjoyed all my outdoor adventures all my life and will simply be happy just to continue to do that. It doesn’t take much to make me happy in the outdoors.

As I told many others, some will live most of their life fishing before they realize it’s not the fish they’re after, it’s the adventure, where one fish is a bonus and a successful day.

Some are frightened by the aspect of an early retirement and what to do with themselves; not an issue for me as my list is long and those adventures can be repeated every day.

It’s been suggested that maybe I jot down a few of those adventures over my lifetime and call it “A lifetime of Alberta outdoor adventure.” I figure I could have completed a full book on outdoor adventures before I even reached the age of 12.

I now have to make some huge decisions, so sitting along a game trail in a snow bank with a silent friend should be more often, or is it…a limb cracked in the distance, we stare silently further than we can see....

My earliest memories have always included the presence of our cattle. There were two classes, I guess you’d say, as we had milk cows, and range cattle.

Now, the milk cows were kept in a pasture right close to home, so they could be milked and tended in a more managed way, and of course, their calves had the moniker of being pail bunters. Yes, you had to teach them to drink from a pail, remember?

Then, there were the range cows that of necessity never saw the inside of a farm unless they were injured or sick.

Sometimes a cow that looked like it might be a suitable milker and tame enough would make the grade and get that status of being a “milk Cow”. Whole different set of rules!!

time when you could relax your vigal, and know all would be well!!

All winter you had to be there every day to feed, water and bed them down and make certain nobody was out of sorts for any reason. The cows lived outside in the coldest times, remember. As you fed you watched and made sure they all came to feed and those who didn’t got a close look. That was “EVERY DAY” no matter what the weather.

Then, come the spring calving time every cow was watched according to the signs if or when she would have her calf.

You got to know the signs, in case the little guy needed help to arrive. Remember the late night checks? Well, that went on for weeks it seemed and then, in our place the cows and new born were out in the coulee and had to be patrolled several times a day, just in case. Of course while you have to keep those cows checked you also have to get your seed cleaned and ready so you can get your crop in that hopefully would feed your cows next winter!!

Once the crop was in and growing you had to keep check on the fences and no day was wasted, because there

was always fence to fix. Then, doggone the hay would be about ready to be put up and of course wet days were spent checking fence and having a look at the herd to make sure they all survived the delicate operation of dehorning, branding, and changing the boys minds to just eating grass!!

Well, all the time the cows were pasturing and looking after their younguns, you’d better keep the summer fallow worked and the hay made. Before you knew it the harvest was about ready and our short season made it critical no time was allowed to waste and go idle. Harvest was soon to start and we cut it in Dads time with a binder and threshed it so the straw was all in a nice pile you counted on to feed all those cows.

After the threshing was done, you had to stack the green feed in early times that was the main ration. Hay was not as handy.

Those old stacks were so hard to dig out and a load took a good while to accomplish!! But, fall time often brought the climax to the show when you weaned the calves and made the decision to either

Primarily known in the industry as a documentary filmmaker, Low began his career with the National Film Board in 1945. He was recruited through a summer program by NFB’s Norman M c L aren, who wante d to set u p a new animation unit, and to which Low would over time contribute immensely.

A recent graduate of both the Banff School of Fine Ar ts and Calgar y ’s Institute of Technology, Low’s dedication to film innovation would both benefit and influence NFB productions for the following six decades.

Low’s bold approach distinguished him on the world stage of filmmaking early in his career. Under his direction,

The loss of a Child is the sense of the loss of future. A bleak place without joy.

The loss of sibling, aunt, grandparent, cousin or friend evokes the closure of a page in our history book and we grieve that loss.

Through facing this pain we may close to the ideas of Life’s Gifts. BE Curious.

Here are some thoughts to consider: OPEN to loving yourself : Accept

OPEN to silence: A walk, meditate, journal. What do you want in life? Listen to others. Remember listening is learning OPEN to honesty: Honesty about yourself brings calm to our lives and encourages honesty we expect from others.

OPEN to playfulness: Life losses have caused us to doubt feeling joy again or you feel a guilt that you should feel joy again. Give yourself permission to laugh. It is a gift.

OPEN to Risks: In life and relationships. Saying NO limits our sight to what

sell the calves right off the cow or if feed was ample you’d maybe keep them over to sell for grassers next spring.

Always lots of decisions, really and there was so much riding on the outcome.

After all, the time and work, the calves were all the paychecks rolled into one.

I often thought the buyers were lighting their cigars or blowing their coffee when mine went through and I’d come away feeling a bit empty like all that time to raise and gone like a thundershower.

Well, now days we don’t thresh straw piles or cut crop with a binder. Certainly we don’t stack hay with buckrake and sweep, and a nice herd of fifty or so won’t pay the bills they tell me.

I had a rancher tell me if your herd was less than five hundred you just starve!!

With all the modern feed makers, like silage cutters and round balers with nice front end loaders and people who come around to clean your corrals, you still need the cow to have a live calf and it still takes trouble to keep it alive to make the market. Seems like also there are fortyeleven new diseases now to keep that calf from making it to market!! Call the vet!!

Can Food Affect Your Mood?

March is set aside as Nutrition Month so VIBE, as a Mental Health Capacity Building Project, likes to set aside some time each March to focus on how what we put into our bodies as nutrition impacts our mental health. Can FOOD really affect your MOOD? Some of you may have noticed that when you overindulge with meals or sugary snacks, you actually felt a little dif ferently.

Maybe you were a little sluggish or tired or maybe you felt revved up by all that sugar or those caffeinated drinks. Regardless of how you felt, it is important to recognize that the food (or fuel) that we consume can definitely affect our mood and our overall mental We know that chemicals in our brain affect the way we think, feel and act and that food (more specifically the nutrients in food) and brain chemicals work together to give us energy throughout the

day. Making poor food choices can affect the chemicals in our brain. A healthy diet can actually help you to feel better not just physically, but emotionally too. A poor diet can have just the opposite effect.

So what foods provide nutrients that have a good effect on brain function?

Wait for it... vegetables and fruits! Yes, these wonderful foods are not only good for our physical health they also improve our brain function and therefore our mental

2016 will be the year of tax changes If you paid attention to personal finance news towards the end of last year, you would have read about the changes set to occur to certain tax programs throughout 2016.

Before reviewing the proposed changes, you should know that if they are enacted as proposed, they will only take effect for the 2016 taxation year and not affect your 2015 return. That doesn’t mean, however, that you can read this and turn back to your regularly scheduled programming. Tax preparation and planning is a year-round activity, so it’s good to keep in tune with these changes and what they will mean for your next filing.

Proposed New Tax Rates For 2016 and subsequent tax years, the 22 per cent tax rate will be lowered to 20.5 per cent for income earned between $45,282 and $90,563. Meanwhile, a new 33 per cent tax rate will be introduced on taxable income in excess of $200,000.

Taxpayers with taxable income in excess of $90,563 will realize the maximum tax savings of $679 (calculated as [$90,563 – $45,282] x 1.5 per cent). For higher-income taxpayers, the benefit of the reduction will be negated by the increase in the top tax rate from 29 per cent to 33 per cent when taxable income reaches $216,975 (calculated as $200,000 + $679 x 100/4).

Proposed Rollbacks to TFSA Contribution Limits The annual contribution limit for Tax-free Savings Accounts (TFSAs) will be returned to $5,500 for 2016. The previous government had increased it to $10,000 in the April 2015 budget.

The $10,000 limit for 2015 will not be changed and taxpayers who contributed less than this will be able to carry forward the balance.

Unearned Income by Dependent Children More commonly known as the “Kiddie Tax”, people should know that under the proposed changes the new tax rate of 33 per cent will apply to the tax on “split income”, representing an increase of 4 per cent. Dividends and certain types of capital gains will be taxed at that highest rate when paid out of a family corporation to related minors.

Proposed Top Credit Rate for Charitable Donations The tax credit rate for charitable donations in excess of $200 will remain at 29 per cent except for those taxpayers who are subject to the 33 per cent rate (who may claim 33 per cent tax credit on donations relating to that portion of their income in excess of $200,000).

So, if a taxpayer had $220,000 in taxable income and charitable donations of $10,000, a 33 per cent credit rate would be applied on the full amount of the donation above the first $200 (i.e., $9,800).

If, instead, the individual donated $30,000, the 33 per cent rate would be applied on $20,000 (15 per cent would apply to the first $200, and 29 per cent would apply to the remaining $9,800).

Changes Still to Come All these changes remain subject to Parliamentary approval, and the months ahead will bring more reform to tax law. Pay particular attention to news in March when the Federal government is expected to unveil its budget for the 2016 – 2017 fiscal year as it is expected that legislation will be introduced to eliminate the family tax cut. Finally, a new Canada Child Benefit, a tax-free monthly payment made to eligible families with children under 18, will likely replace UCCB benefits beginning in July 2016.

We know taxes can be confusing, but it’s important you take time to understand what these changes will mean for you because everyone’s tax situation in Canada is unique. Taking time to research the credits and deductions for which you are eligible, understand tax law changes and prepare and plan for your 2016 filing will go a long way towards ensuring 2016 is your best return yet.

health. Also whole grain products, milk with its calcium and vitamin D, and meat and alternatives provide all that great protein that contributes to healthy brains.

Omega-3 fatty acids are also really important to brain function so try to choose some fatty fish (like salmon, trout, or even sardines), vegetable oils (canola, flaxseed, olive, or soybean), nuts and seeds like flaxseeds, walnuts, soy nuts, pecans, almonds, dairy products, and whole grain flax bread or crackers are a good source as well.

Let’s not forget about our water intake.

Dehydration can cause us to feel irritable and can negatively impact our ability to concentrate and think clearly. Water is the most accessible, affordable, and efficient way to keep hydrated. Don’t forget to up your intake on warm days and during periods of physical exertion.

Sometimes it’s hard to get all the nutrients you need from the food that you eat.

You might want to talk to a dietician or your doctor about a vitamin supplement.

If you are really interested in how what you are eating is affecting you emotionally, consider keeping a food and mood diary. Track what you are eating and then add in some notes about how you were feeling both physically and emotionally during that time. I’d recommend that you keep the diary for at least a couple of weeks for the best results. This is really good information to share with your dietician or health care provider as well.

So be aware of what you are eating and try to make good choices as often as you can. Not only will your body thank you, your brain will too.

What To Do With Springtime Water Conflicts

While the Farmers’ Advocate Office (FAO) receives inquiries about water throughout the year, the most common complaints in the spring concern flooding.

“When the snow starts melting, we will receive calls from both sides of the equation,” says Jeana Les, research and communications specialist, FAO,

Edmonton. “We hear from landowners who suspect their neighbour’s activities are causing flooding on their land, and we also get calls from landowners who want to alter the flow of water on their land to address flooding caused by the melting snow.”

Safety Up! - On Tractors

Tractors today are the safest they’ve ever been. But they are still the leading cause of farm fatalities across Canada.

Avoid tractor-related injuries and fatalities by taking responsibility for your own safety.

Being safe involves removing the unnecessary risks and effectively managing the rest. You need to get trained before you get to work, stay alert for potential hazards while on the job, and learn how to manage the hazards you can’t avoid. Know the job.

Know the hazards. Know the drill.

Training – Who Needs It? Know the job. Get trained for each task before you start doing it. Learn to operate a tractor in a large level field. Drive only the tractor at first, then practice with equipment attached. Ask your trainer to demonstrate all procedures ahead of time.

Move gradually from simple to complex jobs. Ask questions. And remember: it is illegal for anyone under 16 or without a licence to drive on public roads.

Take It On Safely Know the hazards. You take on many tasks in a day. Slow down and think about the hazards associated with each new task. The nasty truth is that a tractor hitched to a farm implement can have many tricks up its sleeve. You could be cut, crushed, pulled in, wrapped, struck or run over. Many extreme danger points are associated with the hitch or with the implement rather than the tractor itself.

Wherever they are found, these hazards need to be avoided. Here are some specific hazards to watch for while operating a tractor.

1. Hitch with care. Set hitches low – preferably 17 inches high, but never above 21 inches high. Hitch to the drawbar, never the axle. Use proper safety clips and pins, and never leave loose chain dangling.

Watch for crush hazards while hitching.

When you pull a load, take up slack slowly.

Don’t jerk on chains or cables.

Prevent roll overs. Some manoeuvres increase the likelihood of a roll over, such as carrying raised objects, operating with a front-end loader, or operating on a steep incline. To prevent one: don’t operate near ditches or embankments; drive straight down slopes; keep wheels set as wide as possible; and reduce speed in turns, on slopes or on rough, slick or muddy surfaces.

3. Big tractors, bigger concern.

Giant four-wheel tractors can be tough to navigate through tight places. Overhead clearance may also be a concern.

Be extra cautious. Take time to get used to all-wheel steering. Ensure everyone is well clear before starting the engine.

Avoid steep slopes and, since big tractors can’t stop as quickly, drive slowly.

4. Service regularly. Tractors need regular service. Check lubrication, fuel and water levels often. To perform adjustments or maintenance, be sure the engine is shut off and the implement is not moving.

5. Refuel without fire. Refuelling can result in fire or explosion. Before you start, turn the engine off and allow it to cool. Don’t smoke. Remember that it takes longer to fill big tanks, so find a secure, comfortable position from which to refuel.

6. Keep the cab chemical-free.

Remove soiled personal protective equipment (PPE) before entering, and clean off contaminated footwear. Don’t hold the steering wheel with gloves worn while handling chemicals. To remove grime and possible chemical contamination, clean the inside of the tractor regularly with a grease-cutting agent.

ROPS – the Rollover Protection System on your tractor does not work without a seatbelt! In a rollover situation, the seatbelt keeps you under the protection of the ROPS. Use it.

Check and Double Check Know the drill. Recognizing hazards is a good starting point. But to prevent injury, you need to know how to manage or avoid them. Here’s a checklist to help you manage hazards so you can stay safe before, during and after your trip.

- Read the operator’s manual and follow all recommendations.

- Ensure there is a first-aid kit and fire extinguisher mounted on the trac tor.

- Always circle-check before you start. Check visibility, lights, tires, and brakes. Ensure the exhaust system is in good condition and leak-free.

- All shields and guards should be safely in place.

- Lock brake pedals together before travelling on roadways.

- Set wheel treads as wide as possible, and ensure tires are properly inflated.

- Use safety hitch pins and chains when towing equipment.

- Keep steps free of mud, ice, tools

or debris that could cause slips.

- Use the seatbelt and adjust mirrors before you start the engine.

- Follow traffic rules.

- Get a good sleep and take breaks. Don’t let fatigue or careless ness affect your work.

- Wear hearing protection if the tractor does not have a soundproof cab.

- On a downhill, keep the tractor in gear so the engine can serve as a brake.

- Don’t operate a tractor in build ings without adequate ventilation.

- Hitch towed loads no higher than the drawbar.

- Check overhead clearance when towing high loads.

- Af ter you work, park safely.

Disengage the power take-off (PTO) and lower equipment to the ground. Turn off the engine and pull the key. Ensure the transmission is in neutral or park and the brake is set.

Watch Your Back An idling tractor could slip into gear or begin rolling if it’s in neutral or the park brake malfunctions. Never jump from a moving tractor or turn your back on it while it is running.

The Last Word Tractors are a valuable tool to power field work. They are effective implement carriers, transport units and remote power sources. But they can be dangerous if they are used incorrectly. Your safety is your responsibility. Get trained, recognize hazards, and manage them for your own good.

When seasons are short, days are long, and assistance is scarce, working alone is sometimes the only option.

Such is the life of the farm worker – you often find that you are forced to work alone out of necessity.

Some t asks are d esig ne d to be per formed alone (such as driving a tractor), but other tasks are much safer when completed with help. Working alone does have an upside. It can be peaceful and productive – no one looking over your shoulder, no one to distract you from the task at hand. On the other hand, it can also result in tragedy – such as injury, health impairment or victimization.

To ensure your safety on the farm, you and your employer need to work together to plan safety measures to be used when working alone. Once your employer provides the plan and the tools to carry it out, the next step is for you to take responsibility for your own safety.

Know the job. Know the hazard. Know the drill.

Three Steps to Safe Work K n ow i n g t h e j o b m ean s g et t i n g trained ahead of time to ensure you can do your work safely. Once you’re on the job, you need to know the hazard: be alert to recognize potential problems that may put you or coworkers at risk.

Finally, when you identify hazards, you need to know the drill – how will you safely manage or avoid them?

Training – Who Needs It? Before you even consider working

Safety Up! On Working Alone alone on the farm, you need to have the correct training for the job. Driving a tractor, moving grain, managing livestock – along with all the other tasks you take on in agriculture – involve knowledge and skills that ensure you can accomplish the work effectively and safely. Don’t head out alone unless you know the job.

Lone Worker Alert Sometimes, no amount of caution and preparation can make a work alone situation safe. In these cases, never work alone. This includes any type of truly hazardous work, such as: • Tasks involving high-energy sources: electrical, mechanical or pneumatic.

• Jobs involving toxic chemicals, reactive or flammable materials.

• Using highly pressured materials.

• Jobs involving a confined space.

Independence Day The hazards of working alone are broader than you may at first think.

You could be injured, suffer a stroke or heart attack, be struck by lightning, or be victimized through criminal violence or other adverse conditions. Part of the risk is the delay between an incident happening and help being available.

When you work alone, it could be hours before another farm worker becomes concerned about you, longer still before you are found, possibly in very poor condition. Whether it’s a mechanical breakdown, power take-off (PTO) injury, heart attack or fire, the outcome is less optimistic if you are working alone when it happens.

Take responsibility for your safety. At the start of a new workday, consider the tasks you will perform, and plan accordingly. You need to know the answers to some important questions before you head out: -In what situations will you be working independently?

- If your equipment breaks down or you need operational assistance, who will help?

- How will you communicate the need for help?

- Who can provide medical atten tion if you need it?

- Does someone nearby know first aid and CPR? - Who can call a paramedic?

- Is someone aware of your where abouts?

Know the Drill In many cases, farm incidents would have considerably better outcomes if emergency help – or any help at all, for that matter – was available to the victim before the situation escalated. The key is to plan how you and your coworkers will respond to an incident before it happens. Know the drill.

The following strategies can prevent working-alone incidents and minimize the damage should one occur: - Ask your employer for a clear and concise working-alone policy.

- Ask for instructions and training on working alone.

- Ensure appropriate supervision is available.

- Don’t work alone without the means

to communicate – cell phones, pagers or two-way radios.

- Check in regularly while you’re alone in the field.

- Know who will assist you if some thing goes wrong.

- Leave tough or hazardous tasks to be completed when help is available.

- Ensure those working alone are capable of controlling the risks of the job.

- Ensure lone workers are medically f it and properly trained.

- Incidents can happen during lowrisk work also, so you should still set time limits and check in regularly.

Checking Up or Checking In? It’s always better to check in than to check up. When you check in regularly, your supervisor will feel less need to check up. All it takes is a short phone call, quick walk around, prearranged meeting at break time, or two-way radio contact. If your boss doesn’t respond, it could mean that he or she needs your help. When you take responsibility for checking in, you do it for the safety of everyone in the field.

The Last Word Working alone can be highly productive and enjoyable, or lonely and dangerous. It’s up to you to decide how you will handle independent work situations for yourself. Take personal responsibility for your safety on the job. Don’t head out without knowing your boss’s working-alone policy. Ensure you have the proper training and tools for the job, a trustworthy communication device, and plans to check in regularly.

Bull Market Viterra Scholarship For Excellence Established At Lakeland College

Forage Research

One million dollars in forage research projects have recently been approved and are set to get underway. These are the result of a targeted research Call for Proposals for forage related projects put out by Alberta Beef Producers and the Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency (ALMA). Karin Schmid, beef production specialist at Alberta Beef Producers, says forage-related projects are key to the industry.

“When you think about forage as part of the beef production cycle, around 80 per cent of beef cattle feed is forage and because the forage industry doesn’t really have a check-off, we need to be able to fund that from the beef side,” she says.

The beef industry she says, has noticed a lack of forage research over the past decade and this partnership with ALMA has allowed them to shift their research focus to address this lack of research.

“We are really proud to partner with ALMA to deliver a one million dollar research call for proposals on forages that met some specific targeted objectives such as breeding, investigating differences in varieties and species to maintain nutritional quality in stockpiled

The 2016 Ag-Citing And Little Royal

It’s that time of the year again and Lakeland College campus is set to host a wide range of activities for the 2016 Little Royal running from March 11-13. Taking part will be the students from Lakeland College and the 4H Beef clubs from the surrounding areas.

The Ag-Citing Day will host information sessions for prospective students and tours.

Academic Advisor for Agricultural Sciences, Sarah Jayne Biglieni, says there has been a rise in the number of students signing up for Ag-Science in the past two years. “ We are d efi n i te l y s e e i n g g o o d numbers for applications this year. We have students coming from Western Canada. It gives them the opportunity to sit in on classes and meet with instructors

and students and determine if Lakeland College and Ag-science is the program for them,” said Biglieni. “There will be mini-labs, tours and class-type activities; participants will find out how they can ‘Live the Learning’ at Lakeland.”

The Royal Rodeo slack and performance is aiming to attract a big crowd on Saturday evening, where cowboys and cowgirls will show off their skills Down Roping, Breakaway Roping, Saddlebronc, Steer Wrestling, Goat Tying and Bullriding.

Little Royal will open with the 28 th annual Western Canadian Judging Competition featuring 4-H and collegiate judges at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, March 11.

Demos from the Agility Club and Stock Dog Club will follow later in the day along with a Ranch Rodeo in the evening.

The three-day event continues Saturday, March 12 with the Stockman’s Club

Steer and Heifer Open and Junior Show starting at 10 a.m. followed by Rodeo Slack at 3 p.m. and the Rodeo performances at 6 p.m.

Saturday events will conclude with the evening dance in the Equine Centre at 10

p.m.

Little Royal will wrap up on Sunday with the final rodeo performance at 10 a.m.

Community Closet Donations

The Community Closet donated a total of $3,750 to community groups on March 4.

Despite the total donation being a lot lower than previous donations, the groups were very grateful for their cheques.

“Our sales are really down at the minute, we find that people are not spending like they used to,” said Community Closet President Rose Hardy.

St. Jerome’s Parent Council received $1000, which they said they plan to put towards their playground. The Mannville Pre-school Society received $500. “We are really grateful for this donation and we plan to use the money to buy books,” said Mannville Pre-school teacher Alicia Rutt. Vermilion Vipers Swim club received $250. “We will be using the money for our Swim Meet in May,” said Lori King. The Vermilion Dance Association received $250, which they are planning to put towards dance scholarships. The Vermilion Skating Club used their donation of $250 to pay for event expenses this past weekend. The Vermilion Ukrainian Cultural Association received $250. The Vermilion Pottery Guild received $500.

Vermilion Minor Hockey received a donation $250. The Vermilion Dance Impressions by Ryan received $250.

On January 22 at 7 p.m. in the Ag Society Boardroom, Vermilion Sheep 4H Club held its’ monthly meeting and Communications Workshop lead by Ashley Bristow. She taught members how to build a speech, in comparison to a burger, and spoke on impromptus. Use who, what, where, when, why and how in order to reach the desired time.

On February 19, the club held its monthly meeting and Judging Workshop.

On February 26 members gathered at the Transfer Station to unload Electronics as part of their fundraising. Tire recycling to begin in April. The Club is trying to take a team to the Western Canadian Judging Competition on March 11 and have 2 spots available. Members that attended the “You be the Judge and NE Adventure Day” said there was lots to do and they had tons of fun judging, doing martial arts, as well as arts and crafts activities.

Members were reminded to register for 4H District Curling being held in Vermilion on March 19. Spring Fling dates were given for Intermediate and Senior members.

Provincial and Regional Scholarships are available online from March to May. February 21, Vermilion Sheep Club held their Public Speaking and Presentations Day. The day began with the Cleaver

As a result of the hard work that students did in their reading, Mrs. McCullough held up her end of the bargain and let the students who met their reading goal, cut off chunks of her hair. Assisted by hairdresser, Melissa Cusack, each student took a snip. Lengths ranging from 10 to 12 inches were donated to the Cancer Society to make into wigs for children going through treatments. As an added bonus, our BTPS Board Trustee, Alice McLaughlin took the clippers to Mannville Credit Union bank manager, Mike Myhovich’s hair, while other teachers had their hair coloured with pink strips.

The Kinderkids are officially penguin experts. With the help of their grade 5 Chromebook Buddies, they were able to research their favorite species of Penguin and learn about their habitats. The kinderkids were then challenged to build a habitat with a variety of materials to depict the type of area the penguin lives in - especially since many varieties live in tropical climates!

Congratulations to the Sr. Boys Basketball team for winning the consolations side of the Vegreville Composite Tournament on Saturday, February 27. The boys lost their first game to St. Paul on Friday, 72-62. On Saturday morning they beat Beaverlodge in a tight game from the beginning 63-60.

They ended the tournament defeating Ashmont 69-52. Both the Boys and Girls Sr. Basketball teams will be participating in Zones this weekend, March 11 and 12 competing for a spot at provincials.

Zones for the boys will be in Marwayne and the girls travel to Glendon. Good luck!

Congratulations to the grade 10 Leadership Class on an amazing job on their Winter Carnival. Everyone had a fabulous night playing the variety of games and winning cakes, stuffed animals, candy, and food items. The Fish Pond and Facing Painting were favourite booths for the young children.

The grade 6’s have begun the Babysitters Course in their classroom with Mrs. Eli Myhovich leading the class. They are an eager group who are enjoying the course.

They had a special group of little visitors in last week that taught them lots about babysitting! A special thank you to Sabrina Perron and Eli Myhovich for bringing in their children as part of the course. The students loved it! They also had Constable Mike Standcum come in to talk to the class about safety while babysitting. Thank you to taking the time to come into our classroom.

This year we are offering a ski trip for all students in grades 5 – 12 to Table Mountain in North Battleford on Thursday, March 24. Deadline to get in your permission forms is Wednesday, March 9.

The money raised from the Carnival helps the grade 10 students attend the Alberta Leadership Conference held annually in May. St. Jerome’s will be holding its Kindergarten Registration Evening and Open House on Tuesday, March 8 at 7 p.m. All children five years of age by February 28, 2017 are able to register and a copy of their birth certificate must accompany the registration. Jen and Dani from the Heart and Stroke Foundation were at St. Jerome’s on Wednesday, March 2 for the Kick-off to our annual Jump Rope for Heart Fundraiser. Along with six grade 5 volunteers the elementary students were entertained with some great skipping, and learned how eating healthy and doing 60-minutes of exercise every day will keep your heart strong and healthy. The students will be collecting pledges until April 13 and having a Jump Rope Event on Friday, April 15.

Every noon hour the gym is full with students from grade 4-12 practicing for Gymnastics’ Day, which will take place in the afternoon of Thursday, March 24.

J.R. Robson’s Drama Club bravely took on the challenge of improv during their experimental performance aptly called Shipwrecked said Drama instructor Ms. Ishaq. Improv is unscripted and is based upon reacting to another person or situation. “I noticed that a lot of our actors are really good at improv, so I thought let’s hone in on this skill.” Three teams performed, object and one liner’s, Shopping Channel, and painting a picture. On March 16 from 4:30-8:00, parents and teachers will have an opportunity to meet to discuss individual children’s progress. Our Celebration of Learning will take place on March 17 from 5:00-7:30. This is a come and go opportunity for families to visit our school and see the amazing things their children have been learning and participating in.

The Grade 1 students had an incredibly fun day at the Vermilion Provincial Park on February 25. They snowshoed, tobogganed, cross country skied, and went on a nature walk. Thanks to Conservation Officer, Mr. Gary Walsh, for the wonderful and educating tour of our park. Some students even had the chance to see a mule deer.

Mrs. Page taught the students so much about cross country skiing. They were getting to be pros on the trails. Thanks to the parents and grandparents who volunteered their time. The winter fun day was filled with amazing weather and tons of fun.

February 26 was a professional learning day for teachers at VES. We discussed how to be more purpose driven, how to change our thoughts to change outcomes, and how to better reach every child in our classes. Grade 2 teachers presented an Fat Cat from the Vermilion Credit Union came to visit VES during their assembly. inquiry based project regarding collecting data. Administration displayed a project that had been assembled to present VES celebrations to BTPS senior administration.

We were also given opportunities to collaboratively work with other teachers within our grade level or subject area.

Fat Cat showed up at our assembly so that we could thank the Vermilion Credit Union for all their generous AR donations.

Our total AR points to date are 14 555. Mrs. Webb informed us that we sold a total of 28 766 perogies, raising $4500 for our field trips. We appreciate all the families who sold perogies. The Johnson family (Mark, Grace, and Will), Jacob Pitt, and the Miller family (Brett and Brooke) were the top three sellers. The three Grade 4 classes presented a math and art project on symmetry. Science fair awards were handed out. 34 students received participation certificates and 43 students achieved merit, receiving a medal with their certificate. Mrs. Moses encouraged us to eat healthy by handing out a carrot to every person in the gym and then we took ‘the big crunch’ all together.

The Junior Boys 8/9 Basketball Team had a very successful season finishing the year with a record of 20-2. They began the season with two losing games and then proceeded to win 20 straight games! They also concluded the season by capturing both the Highway 16 Banner over Kitscoty 54-49 and the BTPS Banner over Wainwright 68-35. “We’ll be looking to repeat our success next season and we have a good bulk of players returning. This was a great team of hard working young men!” says coach and former Marauder, Shayne Sweeney.

With fishing gear, live bait, and their knowledge of setting lines, hooking bait, and catching perch, these Outdoor Education students spent the day out on the open lake on a mild, sunny winter day. Along with Miss Kluthe, Mr. Bates, several parents, and myself, everyone had an awesome day pulling perch and even a few jackfish out of Laurier Lake. If the excitement of fishing weren’t enough, Mr. Campbell ensured that there was a hotdog roast, juice, water, and cookies for all the students. Many thanks go to Mr. Campbell for doing some major organi-

zation and preparation for the trip, and to several parents who spent time to catch freshwater shrimp for live bait and for getting to the lake early that morning to drill holes for students.

Stray Bullet Strikes Rural Residence

C o u n t y of Ver milion R i ve r, A l b e r t a On Februar y 20th Vermilion RCMP received a complaint of a bullet hole being located in a rural residence in the County of Vermilion River. Thankfully no one was hurt during the incident, which is believed to have occurred sometime in the previous month. The round was recovered and belonged to

Bullet Hole Damage Carrie Stark recently reported the incidence where a bullet entered her home. Stark, who lives 11 miles north of Vermilion, said that one of her children was the first to notice an unusual hole in the wall under the bed where they sometimes play.

“After my husband checked he realized that it was a bullet hole. It was very scary, there could have been a terrible tragedy,” said Stark. “I will have to repair the damage myself because it would cost more to go through insurance.”Photos submitted
