The emphasis was on fun and fellows h i p a s t wo R o t ar y D i s t r i c t s (5 370 an d 5 3 6 0) p ar t i c i p ate d i n t h e 2016 Rot ar y B ons piel that saw 24 teams from Alberta, Saskatchewan and B.C. compete at the Vermilion Curling rink from March 4 to 6. “It has been going on for more than 20 years,” said Bonspiel Coordinator, John Lunty. “It’s fun and it’s fellowship.” Opening Ceremonies took place on March 4 as the 24 colourful teams and their sponsors were piped in by the Lakeland Pipe and Drums Band. A f t e r w a r d , A s s i s t a n t G o v e r n o r, Brenda Lee invited Governor Tim Shields to say a few words. “Sally (wife) and I are thrilled to be bac k at w hat I b eli eve i s t he fine st Rotary fellowship that I’ve ever had the good fortune to be part of,” said Shields. “Thank you to Vermilion for hosting us and a special thanks to all of our sponsors, and my team, MacDuff.” When Mayor MacDuff took the mic he drew laughs from the crowd when he welcomed ever yone to Vermilion and encouraged all in attendance to spend a lot of money during their stay here. Shots of whiskey were distributed during the ceremony for a curler’s toast, before the fir st ro c k was thrown by Shields, highlighting the special relationship between Rotary and curling.

“It’s good to have that tradition still, where we get together, have some fun and maybe throw a few rocks and do a little bit of curling as well,” said Shields. “These weekends are truly a special par t of my Rotar y experience and it
really creates friendships all over the place.” John Lunt y said the Bonspiel isn’t about winning. “ We’ve won already; we’ve got all these people here,” added Lunty.
