Council Approves Purchase Of Radar Speed Signs Marie Conboy Reporter

A motion was passed to purchase two radar speed signs for the total cost of $13,000 at Town Council on Tuesday, February 2.

The Town of Vermilion received a radar speed sign for a two week trial period from Kalitec Innovative Signage which collected data tracking speed, location and the time of day recorded. Council was alarmed by the findings that high numbers of vehicles were breaking the speed limit in Vermilion, with broken speed limits as high as 120 kph in a 50 km zone recorded at 5 p.m. on Highway 41 going south.

Councillor Caroline McAuley raised the concern that a lot of big trucks were running the red lights at College Drive.

“I have noticed a lot recently that they see the yellow light and they are hitting the gas. Maybe the lights need

to be longer. There is going to be someone majorally hurt if something is not done,” said Councillor McAuley.

“They do. I have seen it,” agreed Mayor Bruce MacDuff. “You have to be very careful, if they’re anywhere close on a yellow light, they are going through,” cautioned Mayor MacDuff.

Quotes received for the new radar signs included one from Kalitec Innovative Signage and the other from Mega-Tech, with a significant price difference in the products.

Curling Rock Star’s Tour Stop In Vermilion

A large group of fans and curlers gathered at the Vermilion Curling Rink to see Hall of Famer and four-time World Champion curler Randy Ferbey who was in town to promote the second Everest-Ferbey National Pro Am on Feb. 4.

This was Ferbey’s first time in Vermilion and he said he was impressed when he drove into town.

“It’s one of the few clubs I haven’t been to in Alberta,” he added.

Ferbey has partnered with a company called Everest Funeral Service and Concierge and together they created an event called the Everest-Ferbey Pro Am for senior curlers (aged 50 and up) who play in a league.

“It’s a way of saying thank you to seniors across Canada. The reason these curling clubs are still open is because of the seniors, and they often go unrecognized and there’s nothing for them, so we thought this would be a great idea,” said Ferbey.

Every time a senior curler plays in a league game, he or she writes their name on a ballot to be entered in a grand prize

draw.

“It is a contest and the winner and his/her spouse gets to go to Digby N.S. to play against myself, Jennifer Jones, Brad Jacobs and Brent Laing. It’s an all expenses paid first class trip to Digby that runs in conjunction with the Canadian Seniors Championship on April 2, and it’s just a great time.”

This is the second year of the contest and Ferbey said the interest has grown.

“We had such a great format last year.

This year we’re trying to bring in a little more awareness and I’ve been on a crossCanada tour from Nov. to now. It’s picking up a lot of steam. A lot of curlers know about it and they want to be involved.”

Four winners from four regions across Canada will be drawn on Friday, Feb. 26.

“Hopefully we have one winner from Vermilion,” said Ferbey.

The man who was responsible for bringing the World Champion curler to Vermilion is Darren Tymthyshyn, a former Mannville/ Vermilion resident (and Vermilion Tiger) who works for World Financial Group, the company that sponsored the World Champion winning “Ferbey Four” and more

recently, the Continental Cup. Tymthyshyn said the winners of the Everest-Ferbey Pro Am are “treated like gold” and are picked up at their homes in limousines.

“This (curling rink) is a meeting place, it’s ‘Friday and Saturday night’ curling, this is where they (seniors) grew up and they

still embrace the game and a lot of these people have friends here from the last 40 to 50 years. It’s a place to go,” said Ferbey.

“It’s the one thing that has remained the same over the years.”

Ferbey has retired from competitive curling, but said he still plays in a non-competitive league.

It was all about the numbers at this year ’s VES Science Fair and VES teacher and Fair Coordinator, Greg Haslehurst, said in the fair’s 17 year history, this year was a record breaker.

Haslehurst was impressed not only with the variety of topics covered, but also with the age range of the students that wanted to be involved. “ We have a lot of Grade 1 and 2 students here,” said Haslehurst who added that was a good indication that kids are interested in science.

“For the most part these projects were done at home, so there was also a time commitment on their part.”

Haslehurst said he was happy to see the students embrace the “process” of science.

I am pretty sure I am not the only person who has noticed the humungous increase in their grocery bill over the last year, and while I try to eat healthy most of the time it has become increasingly difficult with the price of food.

So many times you hear news reports saying what you eat affects your overall health and that every individual should attempt to eat healthier to prevent such diseases as cancer, heart disease and strokes and today was no different. While I sat and ate my lunch, a news report was on TV quoting the number of deaths each year from cancer linked to unhealthy eating.

Eating unhealthy is one of the biggest contributors to cancer according to www. cancer.org. It has been estimated that as much as one-third of all cancer deaths are related to diet and activity factors, but how in the name of heavens as a society are we suppose to eat healthy when it drains your bank account every time you make a trip to the grocery store?

The other day I was wandering around a few grocery stores (in Lloyd, as I was

there already for work) trying to find the best deals on meats, vegetables and fruits and to be completely honest it didn’t matter where I went the prices were pretty much the same.

Vegetables such as broccoli, lettuce, and tomatoes were crazily priced ranging from $5.97 for a bunch of broccoli to over $6 for four tomatoes and Lettuce was over $3. I also looked at some boneless skinless chicken breasts that would cost me over $35 for six, a roast of beef about the size of one and half of my hands (so maybe 2-3 pounds) was over $20. A small little pack of blackberries was over $4 and not even enough in it to give each member of my household more than five or six each.

So, when you look at the cost of feeding a household of four on prices like that, it is going to cost you an arm and a leg for one meal. One evening, I purchased the items needed to make tacos and by the time I left the grocery store it cost me almost $60, and that didn’t include the items I would need to make a side dish to go along with the tacos.

I know everyone likes to blame the grocery stores for their pricing, but as you will see they have very litte control over it, other factors dictate prices.

According to a research team led by Sylvain Charlebois of the University of Guelph Food Institute, it forecasts that food

inflation rates will be 2 to 4 per cent in 2016 which is much higher than the overall inflation rate as measured by Statistics Canada’s consumer price index.

Since 2015, the cost of meat, vegetables, fruit, and nuts jumped more than anticipated, pushing up our food bill by 4.1 per cent, and yet in 2016, they expect food inflation to be between 2.0 per cent to 4.0 per cent, which will be significantly higher than inflation yet again. (see the chart below) You may ask why the price of food in Canada seems to be so much higher than our U.S. neighbours? Well, apparently there

So, tell me, if you are a family of four or larger or a single parent or a family with a lower income what foods will you be choosing for your family to eat? I know our eating habits have changed since the price of food skyrocketed. Our meat consumption is down, and we have a tendency to eat the cheaper foods that are not so healthy for us. A supper meal can easily be made from a bag of frozen french fries and a can of Puritan meatballs and gravy along with some frozen veggies that costs around 10 bucks for the entire meal. Also, if you search the internet, you can find some cheap meals at http://www.cookinglight.com/ where they say you can feed a family of four for under 10 bucks, I will be trying those recipes for sure.

The long and short of it all is if eating healthy breaks your bank you’re not the only one feeling the pinch. Check it out are factors affecting food retail prices which and see if you can find alternate recipes are; Macro drivers, sectorial drivers and for feeding your family healthy meals on domestic drivers, but the two main drivers a pauper’s budget.

Police attended and attempted to arrest the male suspect. The suspect physically resisted the officer on scene, but was taken to the ground and placed in handcuffs after a short struggle.

The suspect then provided a false name before his true identity was learned by

police. The suspect had several outstanding warrants and conditions which he was found to be breaching. The trailer being towed by the suspect was also found to be stolen.

Police received information regarding a possible stolen trailer for sale at a rural residence. Further investigation revealed the 2015 Load Trail trailer was stolen along with a 2013 Case skid steer (estimated value of $40000+). Both items were successfully recovered and returned to the proper owners. A suspect has been identified and a warrant is being sought for his arrest.

Members from the Islay Health Centre Auxiliary Society receive a donation for the amount of $14, 575.7 in funds from the CNRL (Canadian Natural Resources Limited).

Janet Mc Lennan, President of the Islay Health Centre Auxiliary Society, said last week that the Islay Health Centre Auxiliary Society was shocked and very grateful for the large donation made to their Health Centre.

“The money will be put towards the purchase of a new handy van. There are 18 seniors currently living in the assisted living facility at the Islay Health Centre and the van will be used to help with transport residents.

“We contacted CNRL in Bonnyville last year and asked if we would be able to work their fund raising banquet in the fall, we were accepted and we sold tickets at the banquet.

“We were blown out of the water when we saw the check. We had no idea it would be that much and we are very grateful,” said Janet Mc Lennan. Photo submitted

Pouring rain, plus 7C, s n o w m e l t i n g , water running along roadsides, sounds like spring in April rather than the end of January, I could feel mind and body going into the spring mode.

However, common sense took over and I snapped out of it as it is still winter by all means; in fact, it is still mid-winter so we should enjoy and except what we get with open arms. Also, we should keep in mind that old man winter can throw a tantrum and get downright nasty.

I remember several years ago I was a volunteer with a local school’s Outdoor Education Program. The outstanding school outdoor program follows The Alberta Conservation and Hunter Educa-

Around The Campfire

tion Program very closely and is in part a huge par t of the schools outdoor programs. Being a senior instructor for the conservation and hunter education program plus having my own Wilderness Survival business, I was more than excited to volunteer for the program.

This phase of the program was with near 30 eager Jr. high students, enrolled in wilderness survival; our course took place near the end of March, which has already officially seen the first day of spring. The course was not a pampered and holiday style course; the students would build their own lean-to’s/shelters, build their own fires, provide their own water and obtain food sources as in a realistic winter wilderness survival situation.

We picked the end of March as in the foothills of Alberta’s majestic Rocky Mountains, as it’s a milder temperature still with snow cover conditions, in theory anyway. For two years running, we had fresh snowfall, to the point of making travel or even moving in the wilderness a real chore, but it was the temperature’s that surprised us most, with minus 30+ Celsius for the full three days of the course. However, the youngsters were real troopers and survived the extreme, with no losses, except for some equipment, one little guy didn’t want to carry stuff back out two miles to the road, so he burnt all his gear.

Most of what was his dad’s probably, like the backpack and sleeping bag, those courses bring back many fond memories, and out of the hundreds into the thousands of student’s what we taught may have saved two lives. Two youngsters on separate adventures were faced with a life-threatening scenario where they had to spend one or two nights in the wilderness; they credited our courses with their survival. So with my students numbering into the thousands over the years, that

two count and mean everything, with even one life assisted it was all worthwhile and gives me a great sense of accomplishment.

Lately, outdoor adventures have been focused on babysitting or more precisely puppy sitting…pun intended, although being an overprotective “parent” requires constant attention, it is all worth it. I have turned down many ice fishing and other favourite outdoor adventures because I didn’t want to leave Miss Oohohh locked up indoors all day, and although quite exhausted I am quite content. probably Miss Oohohh is by my side now even when using the chainsaw while cutting firewood, of course, I try to keep a safe distance for her hearing and injury, which she does well and goes off within sight to explore. She helps me drag out the downed deadfall trees and every day there is a “stick”[piece of firewood] by the house door, we bring it in for the fireplace, and it’s promptly replaced by Miss Oohohh.

This past weekend we brought her antler shed hunting up a notch, I dug up a couple of old sheds buried in the snow and wore rubber gloves to eliminate my or any foreign scent. I then strategically placed the antlers along the trail in the “back 40” bush, hiding from obvious sight, without her present while she was indoors herding mom’s kitty’s. Then much to mom’s and a couple wide eyed kitty’s relief I returned and took her for a walk; she of course now walks in front of me for the most part, so I patiently stopped at every clump of grass in the snow along the trail as she would explore it.

Along the trail I would encourage her to “find a bone” which we call antler’s, and as she reached the first antler hidden along the trail she stopped and smelled the air and ran right over to it. She scooped up the antler, and before I could praise her properly, she was off like a bullet towards

home; she took the antler straight to the front door of our home and waited for me.

Not exactly how I want her to retrieve, but for now at only 15 weeks…she did retrieve all by herself and besides of being proud of her that demanded great praise and rewards, in the form of her “Animal Crackers”/cookies she loves.

Soon in March or April we will be venturing forth for the real antler shed hunting adventures, and I am very confident she will be ready, I am so looking forward to it.

With the long range forecast saying it’s going to be in the plus temperatures again this weekend, how can you NOT get out there and make an outdoor adventure, I have to go ice fishing…get out there … you know you want to!

The Miss Oohohh Chronicles The big cookie war of 2016 is at its height; my wife Roxanne bought Miss Oohohh a fortune in dog treats and biscuits, but she is an animal cracker / baby biscuit addict. So with several packages of animal crackers and a huge cartoon of bulk Costco “Gerber Arrowroot Biscuits/ baby cookies I picked up for Miss Oohohh lately, and my wife’s new found taste for said cookies…it’s on!! Miss Oohohh thinks those are her cookies, Roxanne mistakenly thinks Miss Oohohh should share…ooh ohh, I’m not sure who is going to win this one.

However, siding with my puppy we came up with a plan, every time Roxanne comes into the room we will grab a couple of cookies and let Miss Oohohh lick them and stick them back into the package, stay tuned for updates.

When The Smoke Clears Right now there are cookies stashed all over our home…except I am not sure if they are Roxanne’s or Miss Oohohh’s.

When my dad came to this country as a boy in December 1910, he remembered on the trip out from Vermilion to their homestead, that there were NO trees. I remember him saying there wasn’t a switch big enough to give your dog a licking. A trip out that way today would certainly beg to differ with that statement now, you think!!?

Yes, in those early days, the prairie fires had kept the trees from growing and the only trees that survived were in little pockets that the fires missed along the Battle River.

Firewood was at a premium and most folks had to haul it from quite a distance. It seemed to be a trade off for some. They’d sooner live where trees were scarce because the land was easy to plow and farm and you didn’t need to clear the trees, but you never had the fuel to heat you home or building material to make

It ‘s alright. It might even be an indicator that you lean toward being an original thinker.

Our living spaces reflect a lot about who we are and where we place our priorities. If we‘re fortunate enough to have our own space as children, we may start then to arrange our belongings in a manner unique to our interests and personalities. We‘re influenced by the familiar, by what‘s considered the acceptable standard by those who mentor us in all things, our parents. The most common command we might hear from those whose job it is to guide us toward civility and responsible citizenship is: clean up your room. ‚Cleaning up‘ is kind of a virtue.

Cleanliness is next to godliness.

The Ubiquitous Poplar Tree

When the droughts came to the south country and the soil blew away, many folks headed north to the treed country where it rained and there was fuel for the taking for free, except for the elbow grease!!

In my childhood times, the little poplar bluffs were encouraged even in the middle of the fields. Dad thought they broke the wind, and the specter of hauling wood like they did in the very early days, made him believe the inconvenience of farming around them was offset by the thought of all the benefits of firewood and building material close at hand was worth it!!

All through my childhood we cut around thirty sleigh loads of wood for heating and cooking. No gas or electric bills there. Good thing, there wasn’t any money, remember? I remember cutting fence posts and corral rails and thinking we were lucky to do that. Like I said, money, cash, was hard to come by, and the trees were close at hand.

When I travel the country now, and see

all the dry dead fall and trees that could heat a house just seemingly wasted for the want of someone to harvest them, I guess that’s a symbol of our ease of living now days, and really realize how hard we had to work in those early times to survive!

Though the old kitchen stove was so wonderful it took a considerable lot of energy to haul that wood in, saw and split it and stoke the fire properly and then carry out the ashes and clean out the stove pipes. Yes, it was free, no cash, but it wasn’t free from work and trouble if you didn’t know how to manage it properly. It was a real challenge for some folks.

Anyway, what was such a real godsend in those early times for all its uses, now every hand you see it treated like a noxious material that’s a problem to be getting rid of.

What a shame, I still think we need cover for wildlife and the beauty of the country. A trip south just an hour or so, will bring you to the bald prairie where even the caragana will be challenged to grow and you’ll see what I mean!! I guess the

The simpleton‘s connotation is that we humans don‘t have a hope of achieving spiritual worthiness unless we keep it clean... ourselves as well as our surroundings.

Fair enough.

As children, we follow the precedent set by our parents. It‘s their standards we adhere to, if not by desire then by reluctant conformity to what it is they dictate.

Statistics, were we to look for any (and I am not about to do so!) might confirm that the majority of us carry on into adulthood adhering to much the same habits as we learned during our much influenced and formative years. It might feel the most natural. It might be the path of least resistance. The ambience of place we create as adults depends upon many factors, one of them being how comfort-

able we felt in our home environment during the time we had almost no control over it. Another might be how well that environment reflects the perceived norm among our peers. Or how much we rely on advertisers and television depictions of ‚home‘ to tell us how to live. There will always be someone somewhere offering us suggestions on how to live life better, how to clean, how to appear, and how to smell. It‘s a good thing to strive toward perfection I suppose, so long as we don‘t neglect to be who we are or to live our lives while seeking to achieve such an elusive goal.

What if, for example, we feel most comfortable with a few piles of books strewn about? What if we prefer to leave a half-finished project lying on our workbench to come back to later? What if we opt to play drums or take our five year old skating when we can see the baseboards need dusting? What if we sometimes don‘t put everything in its designated place immediately after we‘ve

thought is, we don’t know what we’ve lost until it’s gone.

That’s just like our freedoms, we don’t really appreciate that either until we realize we’re losing it. As the machinery is getting larger and larger and the fields getting larger we realize the borders are being taken down and every last bit of windbreak and shelter is disappearing. Hmm, there must be a lesson here, you think?

Well, there you have it. My old uncle Herman used to say in a seemed like too often dry spell, “We got less rain than they did in that desert” So, maybe we better learn from that old story. Could be, you think? I guess you can’t stop progress, but we need to know which direction forward is!!

It was another must-win weekend for the Tigers as they hosted the Saddle Lake Warriors and St. Paul Canadiens the weekend of Jan. 29th.

Saddle Lake has endured a tough season winning a lowly three games coming into the contest Jan. 29. The pace to start the game was slow. Goaltender Danton Brooks made some key saves to keep the game scoreless early. Tiger forward Carter Myhovich got the scoring started at the midpoint of the 1st, and that was quickly followed by

another 4 goals as the Tigers paced themselves to a 5-0 lead after the 1st.

Ryan VanGenderen led the way scoring his first NEAJBHL hat-trick. Affiliated player Hayden Missler took over between the pipes heading into the 3rd period and shared the shutout with Brooks as they stopped all 26 shots as the Tigers prevailed 8-0.

The Tigers pounded 65 shots on the Warriors. Rounding out the scoring was Lucas Dennill, Dylan Elke, Jake McCormack and Chase Fletcher. It was a huge win and left the Tigers in the playoff mix

Jan. 30 brought a motivated St. Paul team to Vermilion. The Canadiens are a talented, and well coached club. They took it to the Tigers early and often. The Tigers found themselves in a 3-0 deficit after the first and couldn›t rebound all night.

Bad luck seemed to chase the cats all night as missed open nets; post after post and jumping pucks prevented the Tigers from pulling closer. The Tigers did out shoot the Canadiens but in the end, only Rylan Mauws could solve the mystery as the

game ended in a 6-1 Canadiens victory.

The Tigers currently sit 5 points back of the 8th place Lloydminster Bandits.

The Bandits have one game left, and the Tigers are 5 points back with three games remaining. The cats headed to Onion Lake Feb. 3 in a must win or tie scenario. A loss ensures a 2nd straight year of missed postseason action.

News and Notes: Tigers host Frog Lake and Vegreville Feb.6 and Feb. 7 respectively to wrap up the regular season. The Tigers sold off their home jerseys via silent auction at the February 7th game.

Engaging Artists The Vermilion Allied Arts Council welcomed soloist Karla Adolphe who opened for John Wort Hannam and the Blue Collars at the Alumni Theatre on Feb. 5. Both Karla and John managed to maintain a balance of humour while delivering some heart wrenching material. Karla said during her ten years of singing on the road she inevitably meets up with someone who is on a journey through grief and dedicated a soulful song to someone she met earlier in the day who had trouble letting go. John also dealt with some frightening raw material in his song about Edmund Metatawabin who wrote a book called Up Ghost River that recounts his experiences in a residential school from the age of 4. The song is powerful and haunting. Karla joined John and the Blue Collars (Jason Valleau on upright bass, and Scott Duncan on fiddle) and the trio became a quartet for a few numbers. It was a three-hour journey into the human condition that touched on all of its joys, sorrows and triumphs.

Jim Smith Memorial Bonspiel

Monday night Junior Super League Coordinator, Doug McCrae said most of the members in the Junior Super League participated in the Jim Smith Memorial Bonspiel that took place at the Vermilion Curling Rink on Feb. 5 and 6.

“Players came from as far away as Plamondon, Alta. and Macklin, Sask.,” said McCrae.

The Memorial Bonspiel in honour of Jim Smith, a long time curling enthusiast, former teacher at J.R. Robson School, and a promoter of kids curling, has been in his name for the past 13 years, but this tournament, directed toward school aged children, has been

going on for 40 plus years said McCrae.

Thirty teams participated in this year’s bonspiel in three divisions: grades 4 to 6, junior high and senior high.

“Each curler received a prize,” said McCrae. “The businesses in Vermilion are very supportive.”

McCrae said when kids take to the sport of curling from a young age, it becomes a sport they can play all their lives, and it remains competitive.

“It is also a great social activity in the winter, where you can meet a lot of friends,” added McCrae.

The two -day bonspiel concluded with a banquet on Saturday, Feb. 6 and an awards presentation following the meal.

Bull Market They Call Him Mr. Benelli

Ken Pashulka and his two sons, Tyson and Riley, of the Rusylvia Cattle Co. in Derwent took their prize winning bull to the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado in January where he was named Reserve Grand Champion

Junior Bull.

“This is the Super Bowl of the cattle industry and thousands of people come from all over America,” stated Josie Pashulka in a press release.

The bull, which is named Mr. Benelli, was on display from Jan. 14 to 17 at the Herd Sire Alley in the Yards and there his

semen was sold.

He was then shown on the Hill at the National Maine Anjou Show where he was acclaimed as the Reserve Grand Champion Junior Bull.

“This is a great show to promote Canadian genetics,” added Pashulka.

Bull and is owned by 17-year-old Tyson Pashulka.

“Tyson chose his mother many years ago from our herd to use for 4-H.” Mr. Benelli’s mother was also a repeat champion at various shows over the years.

Mr. Benelli is just shy of two years old and weighed in at 2045 pounds at 20 months. He has come a long way from his birth weight of “just” 98 pounds.

He has already won shows at FarmFair International to Agribition and the Canadian Bull Congress and as a calf won the 2014 Grand Champion Bull All Breeds at the Vermilion Fair. His semen is currently listed in Canada, United States, and Australia.

The Rusylvia Cattle Co.’s Facebook page documented the highlights of the recent win at the National Western Stock Show and stated the trip was a top notch adventure and it was one that checked off a big item on each of their bucket lists.

“It was truly a great experience and lifetime thrill to be able to have a bull there at the show,” added Pashulka.

“Power and performance, banner after banner, show after show, he’s been a favourite,” states their Facebook page about the bull.

No wonder they call him Mister Benelli.

Bull Market Stan Hartwell Memorial Award

It’s that time of year again - to nominate the most dedicated volunteer in Vermilion Minor Hockey for the Stan Hartwell Memorial Award.

The tradition began in 2004 with the Hartwell family donating the award as a way of honouring the years of commitment Stan Hartwell invested in hockey in Vermilion.

Har twell played for the Vermilion Senior Tigers in 1967 and 1968 as well as for the Old Timers league, the Toothless Tigers. He wore number 18 and as a tribute to Har twell, the number was retired.

His coaching career dates back to

the late 60’s and 70s and he continued coaching well into the 90s. Highlights of Hartwell’s coaching career include a Bantam Provincial Silver Championship, followed by two Midget Provincial Silver Championships.

Nominations can include: coaches, assistant coaches, managers, parents, f a n s a n d o t h e r vo l u n te e r s . M i n o r hockey executives, businesses or individuals paid for their services, such as referees, and rink attendants, are not eligible for this award. Recipients can be nominated by the community or minor hockey participants.

A member of the Har t well family or an approved designate will be on hand to present the award trophy and

the plaque. The trophy will remain at the Stadium for public viewing and a plaque will be given to this year’s winner.

Unexplained Events At The Mannville Hotel

The Mannville Hotel is one of the oldest hotels in Midwestern Alberta.

The building which was built just over 110 years ago still holds some old world charm and is a popular hot spot with locals for its friendly downhome atmosphere.

However, in the afterhours when the music and friendly banter dies down, when the drinks stop pouring and the doors are locked, staff and guests have reported witnessing many unexplained events over the years, leading them to suspect that there is a strange energy in the place.

Mannville Hotel General Manager Mike Carlson moved out from Toronto 7 years ago and took over the business from his mom and stepfather who had run the bar for the previous 10 years.

“My stepfather said he would see things all the time. He said he had seen a figure with a hat at the edge of the bar one day.”

Marie Ross, who has been working as a bartender at the Mannville Hotel for the past 8 years, says she too has seen a similar looking figure and that there is a constant feeling of a presence in the bar, one which you notice most at the

end of the night after lock up.

“I saw somebody one night at the end of a shift when I was sitting down doing cash up… I looked up and it seemed like he was floating through the air. He came out from where the old office used to be and walked across the dance floor at around 3 o’ clock in the morning. It lasted for about 3 seconds, I couldn’t see his face; he was wearing a long black trench coat and a round hat. He looked like he was from another generation. I just sat there for 10 minutes afterwards just staring. My heart was pounding and I was scared at first, but then it didn’t bother me. I didn’t get the feeling it was evil,” said Marie.

Mike says that the unexplained events are as frequent as every night.

“Ever ybody says the same thing, there is a constant visual thing,” said Mike. “ When the place is relatively empty, no matter what time of day, you think you see things pass and when you turn your head there is nothing there.

There are nights when I don’t get sleep.

There have been many instances of loud bangs, things falling, the pinging on the mirror and the sound of knocking on the door. When I came here it started. The knocking on the door is the weirdest thing. I went downstairs did

a perimeter check of the building, and there was no one there.

“Another time I fell asleep on the couch in my living room and woke up to the sound of a picture rattling on my wall.

There was no train going by at the time and the painting on my wall was jumping and moving. I checked to see if there was a mouse behind it because sometimes they can climb walls, but there was nothing there. I lay back down and then it started again. It freaked me out so much that I got up, took the painting downstairs and gave it to someone in the bar. But I don’t think there is anything malevolent about it. It’s a fun thing,” said Mike.

Bartender Cassandra Kam says that she too constantly feels a presence when she is alone after work in the bar.

“I have never seen anything, but I always have a sense that there is somebody here,” says Cassandra.

Bartender Adrian Prill says that he also had an encounter working at the bar 5 years ago.

“I was cleaning up at the end of the

night behind the bar when I was pushed from behind and fell to my knees.

“I turned around and there was no one there. Another time, myself and a co-worker were closing up. We were doing cash out and then all of a sudden bang bang; both the bathroom doors just slammed! Of course we checked and there was no one there… it gives you a different perspective when it’s all said and done. I was never one to believe in the afterlife or souls or anything like that and then when stuff like that happens it’s totally unexplainable…what can you say? It wasn’t the wind,” said Adrian.

“Nothing bad has ever happened.

Maybe there are some people walking around that haven’t been put to rest, that’s all.”

During the course of recording some interviews for this article in the Mannville Hotel, there was strange activity noted on my recording device. It began playing back inter views without anyone touching it and part of another interview was deleted.

13th Annual Cutter Rally For Cancer

The Lloydminster Exhibition Grounds will host the 13th Annual Cutter Rally for Cancer that will take place on Saturday, Feb. 27.

Event chairperson, Della Wist said the Grand Prize winner has a choice of one of four prizes: a cutter supplied by Buzek Farm Partnership, a $2,500 travel voucher from Carlson Wagonlit Travel, a harness package valued at $2,500 from Vern’s Harness Shop, or $2,000 cash.

There is also an Early Bird Draw that will take place on Feb. 14. Tickets need to be purchased by Feb. 11 to be eligible to win the early bird prize; a Keurig coffee machine.

“Last year we had about 35 cutters and sleighs, a dozen horseback riders and about 200 people for supper,” said Wist.

“You don’t have to go out on the trail,” she added. A $60 ticket includes eligibility for prizes, including the Grand Prize, supper and helps to support the cause. Funds raised are split 50/50 between the Prairie North Health Region and the Canadian Cancer Society.

Wist said ticket sales have been a little slower this year, due to the economic downturn, but added she is hoping nice weather will be a factor in the success of this year’s fundraiser.

“We have enough snow now. A ‘balmy’ temperature of around -5 or -6 degrees would be perfect, said Wist who added that the event goes snow or shine.

There are three ways to participate. You can be a teamster (bring your own cutter and team), ride horseback, or pre-purchase a Ghost Hand. For people who do not have their own cutter/sleigh they can still participate by joining a teamster.

“A lot of people have room for an extra person or two.”

Last year’s event had a parade of cutters and that will continue this year.”

“We ask all the teamsters to stay hooked up and at 1 p.m. the cutters parade up to the grandstand and back. Last year we had about 35 sleighs,” said Wist.

“Some are just a flat deck on runners.

There are some just on wheels.” Sleighs, cutters, wagons and horseback riders are all welcome.

Planning for the event began in Nov. by a group of 10 volunteers, including Wist, but during the event the number of volunteers will balloon to at least 50. Wist said the fundraiser would not be possible without the help of these dedicated volunteers.

Registration will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27. The trail opens at 10 a.m. and closes at 4:30 p.m. Supper will follow at 5 p.m.

Increased Numbers For Winter Walk Day

It was a beautiful day for a winter walk, and 13 peo ple and one d og showed up at Town Hall to participate in the Government of Alberta sponsored Winter Walk Day on Feb. 3 Vermilion Wellness Coalition member and Be Fit for Life coordinator Curtis Gorkoff said the province-wide initiative has been ongoing for 10 years and it receives a lot of local support.

“Be Fit for Life is a huge supporter of this initiative,” said Gorkoff. “Any agency can get on board.”

Gorkoff said students at VES and Mannville School were participating in their own walks for the day.

This year the Government of Alberta’s website also encouraged individuals who weren’t associated with a group or school to join in.

“You don’t have to be part of a school, workplace or community to participate

on Winter Walk Day. Join in as an individual and help contribute to Winter Walk Day’s overall participation.”

The website also reported that over 61,700 Albertans walked over 1.5 million minutes for Winter Walk Day in Feb. 2015.

In Vermilion there was a sharp rise in the number of par ticipants. The numbers went from four last year to 13 this year.

“I wanted to try a different approach this year and star t the walk from a centralized location.”

Previous walks have started from Lakeland College. The Town Hall location made it easier for people to gather who wanted to take in an activity during lunch and get some fresh air, said Gorkoff. The walk began at 12:10 p.m.

“Our vitamin D levels are low around this time of year,” he added.

People also tend to stay inside during the cold long months of winter, thereby

Trio Of Trades Instructors Nominated For 2015 Top Instructor Award

Three Lakeland College instructors are among 40 people nominated for Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT) Board’s 2015 Top Instructor Award.

Aidan Grinde, Don Henry and Angus MacLean were nominated by registered apprentices who took technical training at Lakeland College’s Vermilion campus between November 2014 and November 2015. Through the Top Instructor Award, AIT recognizes two people – one in northern Alberta and one in southern Alberta –who perform beyond the requirements of the average instructor. They must have excellent presentation skills and be fair, friendly and firm.

“Congratulations to all three instructors on their nominations. This is a great testament to the quality of instruction that the students of Lakeland receive. Aidan, Angus and Don have been selected by their students for an award that we, including all of us in our school, strive for each year. It is very humbling when a student goes out of their way to visit the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training website and fill out the nomination form for one of our own,” says Dave King, dean of Lakeland’s School of Trades and Technology.

Since joining Lakeland in 1986, Henry has taught primarily in the heavy equipment technician trade although he has also instructed automotive service technician apprentices. He’s the author of the textbook Fire Department Pumping Apparatus Maintenance.

Thirty years into his teaching career, Henry still enjoys seeing the look on a student’s face when they “get it” and realize how something works. “It’s nice when, four or five years after you’ve taught them, they send an email, phone or I see them in a store and they say that I helped them and that they really enjoy their career.

That’s very satisfying,” says Henry. His nominee wrote that Henry makes it fun to go to technical school and that sharing his years of experience with them is very valuable.

Grinde, an instrumentation instructor, started at Lakeland in the fall of 2013. “I like it more than I ever expected,” says the former instrumentation contractor of teaching. “My first year was very humbling. I think Iput in 10 to 12 hours every day of the week including weekends. But I really enjoy it and I haven’t looked back.” The apprentice who nominated him indicated Grinde was the best instructor he has ever had and that it was a pleasure to attend his class.

MacLean, a holder of four trades tickets, has worked in industry for more than 30 years so the switch to the classroom has been challenging, but very rewarding. Currently in his second year of instructing in the steamfitter-pipefitter trade, MacLean sees his award nomination as affirmation that he’s on the right track.

“I spend a lot of time learning how to present the information to students.

Thirty years in the trade doesn’t necessarily make you a good teacher. For me the learning curve has been straight up,”

he says. According to information on his nomination form, MacLean goes far beyond what is expected of an instructor.

“It’s a true honour and a pleasure to be taught by someone so passionate about the trade and work and who is constantly striving for excellence,” wrote his nominee.

The 2015 Top Instructors will be recognized at the AIT awards ceremony in April 2016. The award winners are Norm Driver, an electrician instructor at Grande Prairie Regional College, and Donna Robbins, a hairstylist instructor at Delmar College. AIT received 42 nominations for

The last two months the Vermilion 4-H Beef Club has been very busy with two meetings, NE Region 4-H Volleyball, Christmas party, Vermilion Packer tour as well as a tour of Highland Feeders, Vegreville.

On December 6, 2015 our club entered two teams into NE Regional Volleyball tournament held in Vermilion at JR Robson

Highschool. Both teams had a lot of fun and did very well.

On December 8 we had our club meeting at the Ag Society Boardroom. It was decided that we are having a mock achievement day this year instead of the farm tours.

We decided our field trips this year would be to the Vermilion Packer and Highland Feeders. Our Club donated $150 to Santa’s Anonymous. At this meeting we had our Christmas gift exchange and each member

On December 29 most of our members attended our Christmas skating party where we rented the arena for an afternoon of skating. We also split the arena in half, some members played hockey and the others skated around and ended up playing tag. After skating the members enjoyed a potluck snack.

On January 12, 2016 we had a meeting as well as a workshop done by Sherry Martin on Public Speaking. At each meeting our assistant leaders check our record books each month. This month, congratulations go to Charlotte Wasylik and Jayce Sweeney for having the most updated record books. April 23 was the date decided for the mock achievement day. Since Alberta 4-H created a new logo, Our Beef club has to change our logo too, so we are also trying to decide on a new style of show shirt/club shirt. On January 26 and interclub meeting was held between Vermilion 4-H Beef and Clandonald 4-H Multi in order to begin preparations for Achievement day.

January 21 members enjoyed the informative tour of the Vermilion Packers. We were shown all the stages of meat processing including Cutting and Packaging. Thank you very much, Vermilion Packers for the

tour.

On February 1, 13 members attended the tour to Highland Feeders feedlot, north of Vegreville. We traveled by bus which was fun because we could visit on the way.

We drove around the feedlot on the bus looking at cattle at various stages of finish.

We learned about their two types of finishing programs as well. We were able to tour one of their hospital barns and see the animal handling equipment used. This tour was very informative for all the members.

Our Club Goal is: To encourage members to be safe and successful in the livestock industry.

January 29-30 was Senior Members Conference at the 4-H Center by Westerose. We had some members attend; the weekend was fun and informative.

Even though the last two months have been busy we are all still looking forward to what is yet to come. Our club is hosting this year’s Vermilion River 4-H District Curling, which will be held in Vermilion. February 7 is our clubs Communications Competition.

February 27 is the district communications competition. Good luck to all members! On February 6 is NE Region You Be the Judge.

On February 11 is the Vermilion River 4-H district meeting.

The Innisfree Minburn 4- H Beef Club had their January meeting on the 6th at the Minburn Curling Rink.

The club decided to have their Leaders Tour on Feb.15, Public Speaking is on Feb. 21 at 1:00 p.m. at the Minburn Senior Center - everyone is welcome.

Dane Bast was chosen by Skate Canada for Duso’s Male Skater of the Month for November, 2015. He has been a member of the Vermilion Skating Club CanSkate Program for the past 3 years.

He always has a great smile on his face.

On Januar y 30, 2015 the Vermilion Sharp Edges attended the Mountain Regional Synchronized Skating Competition in Edmonton. This wa s t h e fir s t S y n c hr o n ize d S k ating Competition that the girls have ever attended. The Vermilion Sharp

Edges have 11 girls from the ages of 8 - 16 years of age. They competed in the Beginner 1 level and had a great showing. There were over 40 teams from ages of 6 - 60 attending the Mountain Regionals Competition from BC to Alberta. The girls had a great time team bonding and watching the higher level teams.

Marwayne Hosts Farmer’s Spiel

Marwayne’s annual Farmer’s Spiel was held on Jan. 29 and 30 with 18 teams participating. This fun spiel has teams competing for commodities that they sell throughout the spiel to obtain money to buy their prizes with. A “rock closest to the hog line” may get you 200 bushels of canola where the “most

rocks in play” may land you 20 – 1000lb s te e r s . T h e p r i c e b o a r d c h a n g e s throughout the weekend so the teams try to sell at the high just like farmers do in the real world. This spiel is more about socializing & fun than the actual competitive game on the ice.

Mannville School 30th Year In Milk Program

WOW! This is Mannville School’s 30th year participating in the milk program! We are 1 of 9 schools to reach such a milestone. Our school has been rewarded with a certificate of Achievement as well as a special gift for all of our elementary students. Way to go!

Congratulations goes out to our Grade 9 junior high curlers, Kayle Tod, Zack Polishuk, Max Amero, Justin Kane, who will be advancing to the BTJHAA Playoffs in Innisfree on Thursday, February 11th.

Our Grade 7 curling team, Aiden Marshall, Blake Cadman, Robert Thompson and Tyler Lassi, showed a lot of spirit. They were great ambassadors for our school and we look forward to watching this team grow with experience.

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching ….. Valentine’s Day will be celebrated on Thursday, February 11 at our school. It will be a hectic day since elementary will also be heading to Vegreville at noon for

their Valentine Swim.

The Grade 6 Students’ Union planned stations in the gym for all of the elementary students to enjoy! Students broke into their Minion teams and stations were set up around the gym that included Minion Bowling, Minion lego, Minion coloring, and Minion Musical chairs.

Everyone had a lot of fun!

The secondary students’ union has planned two Dress-Up Days for all students this month. It will be school colors on February 18 th and black on February 22nd.

Our elementary students’ union has planned a Hot Dog Day for February 19th.

For $4.00 staff and students can have a hot dog, bag of chips and juice.

“Life is like a piece of music, if you don’t work hard for it, you’ll never become a beautiful masterpiece.” – Francis Monteroso Achero Long before the holidays were upon us, one student danced to the beat of her own drum. Daneca Goldsmith and her Vermilion dance group had the opportunity of a lifetime, to participate in the filming of Late Harvest. This Benjamin Musgrave, short film utilizes song and dance to portray the life of a young man searching for something more, a dream beyond his prairie town. Daneca and her dance partners can be seen effortlessly and with elegance dancing in the golden fields. You can check out the film’s trailer on Youtube: Life Harvest Official short film trailer 2016. Daneca we are ver y proud of you and look forward to watching the film in its entirety.

After the Christmas holidays, January ushered in on a restorative note. The staff and students welcomed the New Year with excitement and a new sense of purpose. Ready to delve into the tides of winter, we began to tickle the ivories with Old Man Winter.

Livening up the many cloudy days of the month, the school participated in some warming events. Pajama day is always great way to spend the day in school. Everyone was able to jump out of bed, and stay dressed in their warm woollies on January 7 th . Two weeks later we were able to show off our pride of various sports teams by donning jerseys of our favorite teams. Although variety could be seen, there tended to be a wave of copper and blue that filled the hallways and classrooms. Can you say Oiler country?

That is exactly what the Grade 3- 6 Music students did; they invited recording artist and grandfather of three of our elementary students, Marland Larter to their classroom. Marland played the guitar and accordion and sang. The students even learned to polka during his accordion session. Marland taught the students a lot of how music can impact their lives forever. He told them not to be afraid to pick up an instrument and try it out. “If you don’t like it, try something else. Music is a universal language and it allows you to meet people you would otherwise never get to know.” Previous to his visit the students spent time

getting to know some of his music by listening to his CD. The students can’t wait for his next visit!!

Over the weeks Dewberry School experienced harmonies of various kinds and shone the spotlight on artistic talents that have become the canvas of a masterpiece in the making. We continue to learn that music is the chorus that keeps us all connected and encourages us to create. As Plato once said, “Music gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness gaiety and life to everything. It’s the essence of order and lends to all that is good and just and beautiful.”

J.R. Students Visit Ronald McDonald House

The second half of the school year has officially begun! After students wrote midterms, final exams and diploma exams​​they enjoyed a short break prior to Term 2 before junior high students resumed year-long courses or began a new round of elective courses and seniors received entirely new schedules. Teachers finished marking, submitting grades, creating report cards, preparing for upcoming courses, and refreshing their classrooms.

We’re on a roll now!

On January 25, Grade 7 students spent a day in Edmonton utilizing their volunteerism skills that they learned about and developed in Miss Chapman’s Leadership class! Her, genuinely excited, group

visited the Ronald McDonald House and were warmly greeted before embarking on a tour of the large facility, finding out about the purpose and offerings of the facility. Miss Chapman, parents, myself, and students alike were in awe at how well the space is utilized, how much the family residents feel welcomed, and how heavily the operation relies on community contributions--donations, time, and involvement.

Our eager students then split into groups and manically put their helping hands to good use, helped sanitize various parts of the huge facility, contributing a total of 60 people-hours!

Last weekend J. R. hosted its annual senior boys and senior girls basketball tournaments. The boys began their tourney time shortly after lunch on Friday. Results will be in the upcoming article! Both, the

Congratulations to J. R. Robson’s Junior High Curling Team: Indira Speck, Ryan MacMillan (third), Danielle Fedirko (skip), Kera DeRoo and Julie Newberry for winning the Silver medal in Marwayne on Thursday, February 4! Their placement in Junior North Curling Playoffs will advance them to the BTPS Finals in Innisfree on February 11, 2016.

J. R. was recently VIBE-rating with energy, excitement, and mental wellness activities! VIBE Day hosted 21 different events and workshops to over 400 students from Grade 6 to 9. The event invited Vermilion Elementary, Kitscoty,

Mannville, Clandonald and St. Jerome’s kids to attend. The smooth-sailing day included two sessions per student before breaking for a scrumptious buffet lunch prepared by VIBE staff, and then two more sessions before the end of the day. Every year this giant undertaking is operated by the VIBE crew like a well-oiled machine-their hard work, determination, and intense coordination make this event so positive and successful!

On January 29, all st af f at VES participated in a Pathfinders Day – a day for learning on chrome books. We started the day with keynote speaker Mark Garrison and then we each chose three different sessions to go to, based on our level of expertise. We thank the BTPS technology department for a terrific day. Then on Feb. 1, teachers spent the day at VES putting into action what we learned on Friday, spending time on assessments, collaborating with colleagues, and getting ready for the second semester.

St. Jerome’s has long used our carnival, as an opportunity to build school spirit, develop a sense of community and create an event that is fun and affordable for the entire community. The carnival is run as a project by the Leadership 10 class; receiving a ton of support from staff and other students. The carnival rotates around different themes – from Disney to Hollywood Opening Night to this year ’s Western Night – and the gymnasium is decorated to reflect the chosen theme complete with a dazzling array of lights. We still find the Senior Hoop-la where game players attempt to fill their pantry with canned goods and other food non-perishable items. The fishpond is another favourite with a guaranteed prize every time you play. They’ve been joined by cakewalk, Plinko, and Junior hoop-la, where the sense of fun can be found in the school gymnasium on carnival night. In the last decade leadership has added a silent auction to the evening’s activities. Thanks to the tremendous support of community and other friends of St. Jerome’s, this, along with the still present raffle; help us to raise funds to support student activities. Over the last decade funds raised have been used to subsidize sports teams, keep the costs of retreats lower, pay for swimming lessons, donate to the purchase of iPads to be used by the primary and elementary levels, and so much more.

This year’s carnival has had a date change. Carnival will now be held on Thursday February 25th, and the leadership class has begun its month of craziness to begin preparations. They would kindly request anyone who is willing to donate canned or non-perishable food items for the senior hoop-la, stuffed animals or other toys in excellent condition for junior hoop-la and other booths, a cake for the cake booth or silent auction, or small, wrapped candies to be used for prizes please Grade 5 and 6 ski trip. Early Thursday morning on February 4th the Grade 5 and 6 students jumped on the school buses to journey to Kinosoo Ridge in Cold Lake for a beautiful day of skiing. For many of the Grade 5 students it was the first day hitting the slopes and it is amazing how much they learn in just one day. The girls turned their luck around and defeated them 42-15. The third game saw the St. Jerome’s Spar tans matching up against the New Nor way Spar tans.

The girls played well and won 46-30.

The C final was another tough game as the girls played Grand Trunk. It was a close game but the girls couldn’t close the gap and lost 58-45. The next Lady Spartan action was on Friday as they played Wainwright at 12:45pm to kick off J.R. Robson›s Tournament.

T he Sr. B oys al so at ten d e d t he Tofield/Riley Tournament. The boys played three games throughout the weekend. Hay Lakes were their first competitor. The Boys came out strong but were unable to come away with the victory losing 48-66. Saturday morning

they were defeated by St. Mary’s from Westlock 77-54, but bounced back to end the tournament on a high note winning a close game against Bawlf 64-58. The boys also played in the J.R. Robson tournament last weekend.

This is a ver y busy week at St. Jerome’s. On Tuesday, Februar y 9, students and staff will be treated to a Pancake Break fast put on by the Knights of Columbus and High School Student Council. Wednesday, February 10, the community of St. Jerome’s and the Holy Name of Jesus community will gather at the Catholic Church to celebrate Ash Wednesday at 10:30 am. Thursday, February 11 is Formal Day and Valentine’s Day. High School students can buy a “Crush” pop and get it delivered to someone they have a “Crush” on. Elementar y students will be hosting Valentine Parties sharing treats and passing out Valentine’s.

The Rotary will also be at the school for “Purple-Pinky” Day promoting the importance of vaccinations throughout the world. Elementary students will also have a Farm Safety Presentation during the day.
