Habitat For Humanity Build Completed

The Habitat for Humanit y house which started planning in November 2014 has been completed and the keys were handed over the new owners to move into their home on Saturday, January 30.

A crowd consisting of committee members, volunteers and well wishers presented Brandy Robertson and her two daughters, 6-year-old Entasia and 3-year-old Ezaelia, the keys to their new 1,000 square foot home. Linda Jacejko said a dedication and Deacon Kenneth Noster said a psalm reading which was followed by house tours and a hot lunch.

“It has been an amazing experience to be a part of. We are really excited to move in,” said Brandy Robertson.

“It’s been incredible to be a part of this and see how many people in the community genuinely care. We came out here from a big city and living in Toronto you’re just a number.

“The whole process of watching the house develop, being a part of that, working with so many diverse people has been amazing. The girls helped paint their own rooms, hotlips pink, they are so excited and have been telling everyone at school all week that they are moving into their new house,” said Robertson.

The total for the build raised to date

stands at just under $140,000. Habitat for Humanity Chair Linda Jacejko thanked all the individuals involved in the community build, those who volunteered labour hours, fundraised and worked on the build in many forms.

Deputy Mayor Clint Clint McCullough welcomed the family into their new home.

“It’s your home and I would like to welcome you and I hope that you enjoy it and have many happy days ahead.”

“It is a huge a relief. Everyone did their part. We realize that there is so much demand on everyone’s time and we are very grateful,” said Habitat Chair Linda Jacejko.

“The project was made possible by long hours of volunteer work, supportive businesses, the Vermilion community and individuals who continue to play a key role in the development of the project,” said Jacejko.

“We do not have any other Habitat for Humanity project in the pipeline as of now and we are still working on fundraising the final $15,000.”

All Wheel Wash owner Hugh Stewart said his new business in Vermilion will be open mid-day on Feb. 4. and will be open 7 days a week from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Stewart, who was born and raised in Vermilion, said he has seen the need for this kind of service in town for quite some time.

“There was just no place to put it,” he added.

That was until the Town of Vermilion began developing the Junction 16 41 subdivision at which point Stewart said

with seven foot catwalks, foamers and fire hoses, and a large open seasonal outdoor bay with overhead booms for washing to accommodate oversized equipment or overflow. Also on-site is a water bottle filling station.

“We have pay stations and attendants for self-wash,” added Stewart. Employee selection has now been finalized and training the newly hired employees began in mid-January.

“We had a lot of applications,” said Stewar t. Five full -time employees drive-through bay with friction or touch- (including Stewart) and three part-time less wash, two 120 foot semi-bays positions were filled. that became the only option.

The plans have been in the works for over a year now, but construction didn’t begin until the spring of 2015, and overall Stewart said the construction process has gone smoothly.

All Wheel Wash will deliver on its name.

“There is a possibility of hiring more, depending on how business goes,” he added. “And there’s also a possibility of detailing in the future, if there’s a demand for it.”

Stewart said they are also willing to work with any fleet cards and there will be loyalty cards on offer as well.

“We are looking for feedback right now, and people can check our Facebook page for updates.”

Now that the opening date is in sight, Stewart said he is looking forward to providing a service that the Town of Vermilion really needs.

The Grade 3 students are learning about global citizenship in social studies. They held a hat day and raised $295. Students will use the Kiva website to choose an individual or group to lend money to in order to improve their quality of life. Students will monitor the progress over the year.

Our Roots of Empathy babies came to visit the Grade 2 students. Mr. Haslehurst read stories about how babies reach milestones at different times. Reaching milestones and how we feel about them is part of what makes us different and unique. During the visits, all the babies started out calm and quiet. Baby Miller

On January 26, Arctic explorer, John Dunn, thrilled VES by giving two presentations regarding his expeditions up north.

He talked about and showed photos of various aspects of the trips, including maps so we could see where and how far he travelled, modes of transportation and accommodation, various terrain, and wildlife including polar bears, musk ox, wolves, caribou, arctic hare, beluga and narwhals. VES would like to thank the

Congratulations to the Grade 8/9 Jr. Girls Basketball team on winning bronze this past weekend in Ryley. Way to go Girls! Congratulations to the Jr. High Boys for playing to second place in Ryley on Saturday. All of our teams were in action this past weekend, as the Sr. High teams are back in action after taking a break to prepare for exams.

The second semester started today, Tuesday, February 2 nd . High School students all started new classes and there have been some changes to the Jr. High schedule as well. Students from Grade 6-12 will be receiving their report cards this week on Wednesday, February 3.

Elementary students gathered in the Gathering Area on Thursday, January 28 to celebrate January Happigrams. Ms. McDermott’s Grade 1 students entertained the audience with the poem, “The Friendly Snowman” and sang the song, “Peace Like a River”. Their clear, loud voices rang sweetly through the Gathering Area bringing joy and smiles to the

Crisis Line for helping with the expense of bringing Mr. Dunn to our school.

The Grade 6 students at VES paired with students from Mannville and St. Jerome’s on January 27 for VIBE Day. The VIBE committee organized an eventful day where students participated in a variety of activities ranging from Tobacco Awareness and Healthy Living to First Aid and Friendship Skills. One highlight for VES students was the opportunity to leave their mark on their school by making stepping stones. These stones

will be placed in the VES flower beds for all to enjoy come spring. The students enjoyed their time and learned valuable life lessons.

A huge thanks you to the VIBE staff and J.R. Robson for hosting another amazing VIBE Day. Our grade six to nine students enjoyed all the events of the day and seeing students from a variety of schools from the area. They had the opportunity to participate in Cupcake decorating, Basic First Aid, Kickboxing, Team Building Activities, and a variety of other activities. Thank you to all of our staff who participated in the day supporting our student’s mental health and wellness.

The Grade 5 and 6 students will be traveling to Kinosoo Ridge at Cold Lake for their annual Ski Trip on Thursday, February 4. It is always an exciting day for the grade five students because for many of them it is the first time on skis and riding a chairlift. Grade 7 to 12 classes have their Ski Trip booked for Wednesday, March 16.

Over the last week we have been blessed with warm weather conditions, and while it has been a joy to walk outside not bundled up and walking around like penguins, the penguin shuffle has been needed. The snow has been melting and the freezing rain we had certainly caused some pretty treacherous conditions.

My mom for one found that out last Tuesday evening. As she left to go out for an event she was attending she walked down the stairs outside her apartment building, and as soon as her feet hit the walkway out they came from under her, and she ended up hitting her head on the walkway in the fall. We took her to the emergency department where she was later transported by ambulance to Camrose for a CT scan.

There have been numerous falls over the past week resulting in injuries, so my thought was how can we keep ourselves safe and our town citizens safe from the perils of glorious weather but not so glorious walking conditions?

Nice Weather Dangerous Conditions As a business owner or apartment building owner/manager, it is imperative to maintain your sidewalks and parking lots during inclement weather; clear, shovel, salt, and continue to clear, shovel, and salt the best you can! It’s good for your business, and it’s good for your customers.

A few ways we can try and help keep ourselves in an upright position instead of spending most of our time on our bums or hands are actually kind of basic, but in our busy everyday lives when we are hustling here there and everywhere we have a tendency to forget the things we know.

On a personal level, there are a few things we can do to help keep ourselves safe: First, select proper footwear. Women especially are the evil doers when it comes to this one simple rule. Flat footwear with rubber soles provides better traction on ice and snow than leathersoled or high-heeled shoes. Buy a pair of ice cleats, I know they are not the most fashionable accessory, but it will help on icy patches.

Do the penguin shuffle. It may seem like it’s taking up some of your precious time, but it is a rather effective means of

staying on your feet. Smaller strides and shuffling your feet across an icy patch with your toes pointed outward slightly keeps your center of balance under you where it belongs.

Keep your hands out of your pockets, you may need them to help keep your balance as your shuffling across an icy spot.

If you see a handrail use it, it’s one of the best ways to prevent slips and falls on areas that have slight or steep grades and on stairs; it’s there for a purpose, so why not utilize it.

Getting in and out of your car is one of the biggest fall risks. We often have a false sense of security around our vehicle and don’t pay attention to where our feet are going.

The biggest prevention of a fall is to pay attention. We need to scan the areas in which we are walking and if you see anything that shines, has water on it, has visible ice or snow, slow down and take care of your footing.

If you do happen to take a fall, try to fall on the most padded areas of your body and try and keep your muscles relaxed as it can help prevent injury. It may seem a little weird as it is human

I would like to take this oppor tunity to thank the two EMS guys (sorry I can’t remember your names) and the Vermilion Health Care staff, along with Dr. Maulud for their very thorough treatment in my mom’s incident. I also have to say that our EMS teams do not get the recognition they deserve; they also put themselves in very dangerous situations while transporting and treating our family members each and every day.

It’s the end of January and we are getting temps in the pluses, and even the snow hasn’t equalled to much of an issue here in the mid-west. I will take that with gratitude.

I should be getting out and enjoying more outdoor adventures, but being a babysitter with the new puppy demands priority, although we are continually outdoors exploring. So, for me that’s an adventure We started up our winter archery l e ag u e s o n c e ag a i n o n T h ur s d ay evenings. We have a great group out and some were shooting like they never stopped for the Christmas break. Most of us bowhunters do.

One of the “Brads”, on the first shoot even shot the proverbial “Robin Hood” welding one arrow into the other with a perfect shot, unlike older arrows made of wood and splitting, these new carbon arrows weld together.

That shot is a hard accomplishment, as the first arrow has to be in the bull’s eye and the second shot hit that arrow in the exact spot in the size of a pencil tip so perfect it doesn’t glance off, and the second arrow enters the first…what we call the “Robin Hood”.

This week we will be getting a little more serious and start keeping scores to see who is the “top five gold shooters” or just for fun and trying to personally beat only your own score each week.

practise or even shoot my bow as I am working on bows non-stop, both new bows and helping out shooters get their bows tuned up.

However, having the ranges and club in my backyard, I can shoot any time I wish, sometimes when I am mad at the world I will sneak off to shoot a dozen arrows.

Usually by the third arrow of the first round I am a mellow fellow. I feel any stress leave with every shot; it’s one of the most relaxing sports I have ever taken part in.

Target shooting may be indoors, but with every shot I am transported somewhere into a peaceful outdoor wilderness, one of the best parts of a bowhunting adventure. Archery should be prescribed as a tranquilizer.

Plus, it is great practise as a bowhunter.

Ethically I want to be the most efficient and accurate I can be, however, I generally have to work on it, not like some of you that are amazing naturals.

With the low snowfall it is still walkable in most of the wooded areas, which combined with a craving for a good rabbit roast; it’s time for rabbit hunt with the bow.

I am getting hungry just thinking of “Bunny Burgers”, a rabbit roast is more a burger BBQ than a roast, with several rabbits with an added pork chop ground and seasoned into burger, the burgers are mouth-watering.

In Alberta, there are mountain cottontail rabbits, snowshoe hares, jackrabbits, and white-tailed jackrabbits, the most common rabbit we see in forested areas of Alberta or Canada is actually the snowshoe hare.

Jackrabbits are actually a hare, they

are the bigger rabbit or hare commonly seen on our prairies, they have longer ears and are lightning fast running in the open prairie.

Wild rabbits are grey to brown all year and hares are grey to brown in summer and almost pure white in winter. Rabbits normally live only 12 to 15 months and in that time have approximately three litters of up to six young.

In summer, rabbits and hares normally consume a diet of grasses and forbs and in the winter eat the buds, twigs and bark of shrubs and trees. Hares can consume up to 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) of green vegetation in one day.

Hare populations tend to peak every 7-10 years. One may find hundreds of rabbits in a certain bush for several years then zero for several more years; so a little wildlife management, [hunting] will keep the population healthier.

The old saying “breed like a rabbit” is true as they can breed themselves into starvation and disease with overpopulation. Thinning them out before nature does it final in that cycle, actually is beneficial.

It will also be good to take Miss Oohohh out. She will no doubt be beneficial to the rabbits with her running circles and diving head first into the snow. The exercise will be good, plus I will fit her with her saddle packs for training. It will be a nice shared day with many bonuses.

The Miss Oohohh Chronicles Since Miss Oohohh was a wee pup [six weeks ago] when I got in from work or heading to the shop and I would change clothes, I would bring her into the bedroom and throw her up onto the bed.

I would throw the quilt over her and she would hide, of course I would have to find her, and we came up with the game called “Oh no where’d da Oohohh go” which we played several times a day.

Now she has grown a little and can get up on the bed herself and the game evolved slightly, I would get undressed and jump totally under the quilt and shout “Oh no where’d da Oohohh go”.

At first she would pounce on me from head to toe with her front paws, somewhere it evolved into her nipping gently, and with the quilt I could hardly even feel her.

However, now she is a big girl and she nips at every lump on the bed as soon as I duck under the covers and shout “Oh no where’d da Oohohh go”. However, now I can feel every one of those baby teeth, even right through the heavy quilt.

Now she beats the stuffing out of me as soon as I get under that quilt, pouncing on me nipping every lump until I literally jump out of bed and throw the quilt over her to calm her down.

She is 50 lb now; I am a little skeered to think where this game is going to head when she doubles that weight. I’m thinking it’s time to revise this game; maybe I will wait for the wife to go to bed and shout “Oh no where’d da Momma go” When The Smoke Clears What do you call one arrow shot into another arrow by a rabbit?...a Rabbit Hood!

Cauliflower Pizza Crust 2 cups rice textured cauliflower 2 eggs 1/2 cup cheese, cheddar or Swiss 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

I’m a real fan of ice fishing. I guess it helps to be crazy when it comes to like sitting out on an ice covered lake.

One time, a friend voiced the opinion to me that the only thing about ice fishing he liked was that he didn’t have to do it. Well, you definitely have to like it, and I certainly do.

First for the challenge. Second, it’s always a thrill to catch something you can also eat, and I’ve found not all people enjoy the outdoors on a winter day. But, I do, and catching fish is just a bonus!!

Back in the earliest times, we had absolutely no idea of the finesse needed to lure fish to bite in that kind of situation.

In fact, even summer fishing was not that easy to do, before I had a boat. You had to rent a boat whenever you could. There were very few outboard engines, and rowing was work as I remember.

Back in the first days, I went ice fishing there certainly weren’t any ice augers, let alone power augers. You had a pointy

I looked on a map so I know now its approximate location, but I‘ve never been to La Loche, Saskatchewan. I know the full names of at least four people who lived there. Four people whose lives were taken suddenly, violently on a Friday in January, 2016. Something terrible happened. News of the event shocked and saddened people across our nation. That‘s about the extent of my knowledge of the small northern community: something terrible happened there.

If I’d succumbed to my morbid curiosity, I would have scrolled the Internet for headlines shouting about the horrible tragedy of it all. I would have read everything every one of the journalists descending upon that desolate little place released into cyberspace. I would have sought out news clips of interviews featuring close-ups of faces of grieving relatives attempting to articulate coherent responses to the thing they’d just experi-

ice spud drill and an axe. Yes, the ice flew and water too, if you let the water come in before you got the hole big enough. It was a chore to make one hole so you usually only made one, so you hoped you were in the right place!!

We more of less tried to catch pike, we had no idea how perch were tempted into coming to hook. We used to lay on a tarp and cover our head up so we could see down in the water. Oh, but it’s fascinating to see the fish there below you!!

For years our fishing involved lots of fishing and like that, but very little catching. It took years to learn the little tricks that made the difference, and my thought is, we culled out all the dumb fish and the survivors are a lot more challenging to catch.

It was a wonderful leap in progress when we got our first ice drill. It only took about half an hour then and we got ice strainer to clean the ice chips our. Sure beat your bare hand.

When we first started, there simply wasn’t any kind of shelter. Through the years, I’ve seen every kind of shelter, leading up to the wonderful efforts we

see now!! Way back, with the help of my daughter, who was learning geometry at school, she helped me design my little T.P. tent and it’s been such a wonderful shelter for years. And, we learned about the lures and lines that made catching those delectable little perch that make such delicious fillets possible.

You need a whole different set of rules because fish aren’t nearly as aggressive and you need a whole different set up.

We used to have just line and no reels, but we soon found short lightweight rods and, though it is difficult, a knowing fishing fanatic can find sources of a light line that stays limp in cold weather.

They really have started something new with glow in the dark lures that are visible in deep water. That light line means you can find the bottom (where the perch are) much easier and use small lures that tempt even fish that aren’t really hungry, but maybe would like a light snack.

Ice fishing is kind of a gathering of like souls, so often you look for a cluster of fishing shelters, thinking there must be a reason why so many are gathered there.

Not necessarily so.

One time, when my son lived in Innisfail, we went fishing in Pine Lake, east of Red Deer. I thought a little bay at the far end looked really promising and after trying a few holes, we lucked into a real bonanza, and caught a limit in a short time. Nice perch as I remember. Everywhere we inquired along the lake, everyone declared no luck. So you need to be a little adventurous and look for an area that harbors a few fish that aren’t educated.

As I look back on my many adventures over a lifetime of fishing, I have found ice fishing very productive and rewarding.

It’s nice to have four wheel drive pickups, but, the idea is to fish like you know there are fish where you are, you just have to know what it takes to catch them. They usually tell you if you are attentive. There always seems to be a key thing. Over the years those little live maggots have always worked and a “Marmaska”, lure used on a light flexible line, and you know if there’s perch around he’s liable to be your dinner!!

What happened there? Let ’s say ‘plenty’. Even reading the most brief accounts of its history, we realize that La Loche is a community whose people have known more than their share of sorrow. How many of its youth have been lost to suicide? Too many. For what reasons? Hopelessness. Poverty.

Drugs. Alcohol. Lack of (fill this space with whatever comes to mind next). The list of possibilities is infinite. Why does anyone choose to end life by their own hand? If we had the definitive answer to that one, we’d find ourselves among the most sought after of sages. Questions without answers are what keep philosophers and social scientists forever test-

ing theories and periodically courting madness.

So many people affected by tragedy, the collective heartache ripples outward in ever-expanding concentric circles. Young people with aspirations and contributions to make no longer have that potential. Parents, siblings, ex tended relatives, friends with no one to tell them what to do next, what to do with the absence, the helplessness, the anger, the despair roiling within them.

The perpetrator, too, must ponder the consequences of his actions in the deafening quiet of their aftermath. Did he lose all control or did he execute with precision a well planned deed? We, the outsiders looking in, do not know his name but everyone in his community knows it.

Those who care for him know. He knows they know. Whoever he was, whatever he represented before, in a few short moments, he altered everything for everyone forever. He shifted from whoever he was in the seconds before his actions to Notorious Murderer afterward. That real-

ity will echo long after news reporters pack up and move on to the next big story that sends the nation into a voyeuristic frenzy. Then again we will look on, opining about the natures or sordid lifestyles of the personalities involved, imagining we can know how it came to this, judging.

Human beings are complicated, mysterious, unpredictable. We are equally capable of such immensely constructive and such staggeringly horrific acts. Holding onto the balance, for some among us, for reasons we may never comprehend, teeters along cliffs of fragility. Tragedies like La Loche may not be preventable but in their aftermath our awareness is temporarily heightened. What, if anything, can each of us do to make it less likely La Loche repeats itself?

Tomorrow, the sun rises as it always has done. We awaken in half-darkness, considering what we know about yesterday. We may be fearful or inspired in anticipation of what will come. We pause, then we find a way to carry on, with the knowledge that stepping forward is our only option.

Car Scam Results In Robbery Of Vermilion Man

Vermilion RCMP Submitted

Vermilion, AB - On Wednesday, January 27, 2016, at approximately 2:17 PM, Vermilion RCMP responded to a 911 report of a robbery that had just occurred wherein three men robbed a man at his home after having gone there under the pretense of selling a car to the victim.

The three men arrived at the victim’s home in a rural area and offered to sell their car to him. The men negotiated with the victim for a period of time until they ascertained that the victim was alone at the residence. It was then that two of the men assaulted the victim, took his wallet and fled the scene in the car.

The victim suffered only minor injuries and was able to provide police with

Two men have been charged with robbery: 20-year-old Joshawa Ricard of Lloydminster and 29-year-old Randy Bernard, also of Lloydminster, who sometimes uses the name, “Randy Florence”. They are scheduled to appear in Provincial Court in Vermilion on Monday, February 1, 2016. Both remain in custody at this time.

Vermilion Nordic Skiers Compete In Winter Games

Four local skiers from the Vermilion Nordic Ski club will compete in cross country skiing at the Alberta Winter Games in Medicine Hat this February.

Samuel Ree, Sean Ulrich, Caleb Ree and Alex McCullough will ski representing the Northeast Zone.

Ski Coach Vaughn Cooper will travel with the skiers to the Winter Games for the 3 days. Cooper, who has been coaching skiers in Vermilion for the past 25 years, coached when Beckie Scott won at the Winter Games.

“I go out with them training and we work on technique and fitness. Three of the boys are in the same category; it is organized by two year age groups,” said Cooper.

Samuel Ree will compete in the juvenile category consisting of 14/16 year olds.

This will be Rees’ third year to compete in the Winter Games and a second time for the other three boys competing in the same category; the midget group.

“I started off in the jackrabbits,” said Ree. “I was going to go into hockey but I chose skiing instead because it’s something we can all do something together as a family.

“It is competitive when you’re there,” said Ree. “I will be the youngest in my group so it’s difficult to win. The best I have come in the past has been 7th position.”

Arctic Explorer Inspires Students To Explore

Explorer, photographer and lecturer John Dunn shared his experiences from the Canadian Arctic and his passion for the wild regions of Canada when he visited VES School on January 26. The presentation and visit was sponsored by the Vermilion Crisis Line.

John is not only a wilderness traveller and explorer, but also an accomplished photographer and cameraman.

Photographs and videos from John’s 20 expeditions in the arctic were projected in crisp detail on a large screen to the packed gymnasium. Teachers as well as students were captivated by the stunning images of vast and rugged landscapes in the Canadian Arctic, places people rarely go.

John entertained the students with stories of when he couldn’t wash his hair on an expedition once for 95 days and

the time when he fell into a crevasse in Greenland but luckily was tied on to a rope.

An Englishman, John graduated in geology from London University and worked in mineral exploration in the Australian Outback before moving to Calgary in the late ‘80s.

He says he became a Canadian citizen to pursue his dream of exploring and photographing in the Arctic.

John says he was inspired to be an Arctic explorer because of his upbringing.

“My parents were adventurers that sailed around the world when they retired and in University I used to have maps on my wall of places like Baffin Island so obviously it was in the back of my mind back then.

“It’s amazing to be up there in nature just travelling for day after day, it becomes very much a way of life. That’s why I do longer trips so that I have more time to get

John and his team plan to return to the Arctic in May. “We will start in the top of the tree line in Yukon and head north. “I have never found the Arctic isolated at all, we’re just up there doing our thing and enjoying it.”

John was made a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society for his efforts in promoting awareness of Canada’s Arctic geography.

Bull Market New Research Clarifies Canadian Beef Producers’ True Environmental Footprint

“We’re working to get a more accurate assessment of the Canadian beef industry’s environmental footprint and these results indicate that the footprint per kilogram of beef produced is getting smaller,” said Dr. Tim McAllister, a research scientist at AAFC Lethbridge and one of the study’s principal investigators. “The decreased emissions and reduced resource requirements to produce beef over the past few decades, due in part to enhanced production and feed efficiencies, crop yields and management practices, wouldn’t have happened if it weren’t for investments in research and development, and the industry’s ability to adopt those technologies,” he explained.

Dr. McAllister is a world-renowned scientist. He works with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations on the procedures used to develop these estimates, and has served on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

The environmental impact of livestock production has been a contentious topic for some time, and greenhouse gases and resource use have been at the forefront of this environmental debate. For the Canadian beef industry, with over 68,500 beef farms contributing $35 billion worth of goods and sales to the economy, clarity on this topic is important.

“Unfortunately, perceived concerns of negative environmental impacts of beef often overshadow the beneficial impacts of the beef industry,” noted Tim Oleksyn, a cow-calf producer from Shellbrook, SK and Chair of the Beef Cattle Research Council. “Beef producers are inherently motivated to be more efficient, which most often has social, economic and environmental benefits. Now that we have resource use and GHG emission benchmarks, we can move forward as an industry and more strategically target our efforts to improve.”

Canada’s beef industr y currently accounts for 3.6 percent of Canada’s greenhouse gas production and 0.072 percent of global greenhouse gas production2. At the same time, lands that grow grasses and legumes for cattle sequester carbon, thereby reducing GHGs. The results of this study speak to the industry’s commitment to continuous improvement and sustainability. It will also provide important historical information to the environmental component of the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (CRSB)’s first-ever National Beef Sustainability Assessment. The CRSB sustainability assessment will benchmark the industr y’s social, economic and environmental impact using 2013 as the baseline. The assessment will be revisited, and progress evaluated, every five years.

Results from the remaining phases of the industry environmental footprint study, including water use, biodiversity and provision of ecosystems services, are expected in 2018. The study is funded by the Beef Cattle Industr y Science Cluster.

Bull Market 2016 DUC/CPS Forage Program Offers Farmers A Financial Break For Grassland Conversions

Last year’s drought conditions had many farmers looking for greener pastures and this year’s forage program recently launched by Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) and Crop Production Services (CPS) might be the perfect solution.

Available to agricultural producers in the three Prairie provinces, the DUC/ CPS forage program offsets the cost of Proven Seed forage varieties when producers convert cultivated land to hay or pastureland. In Alberta and Saskatchewan, producers receive a rebate of $100 per 50 lb. bag of forage seed; in Manitoba, producers receive a rebate of $50 for every new forage acre seeded as part of the program.

The response to this year’s forage program has been very positive, says Craig Bishop, DUC’s regional forage lead, especially in light of recent economic and climatic conditions.

“Declining prices for wheat and other cereal crops, as well as a simultaneous increase in beef prices, are leading many landowners to seriously consider the move to increase their cattle herd,” explains Bishop. “This, in turn, spurs a demand for increased forage. The

drought of 2015, in particular, resulted in many poor hay crops in several areas and further motivated producers to convert additional land to forages. That year, we saw 25,000 acres of cultivated fields across the Prairies be put into grass with this program with CPS—a significant increase from previous years.”

Bishop adds that reducing input costs, especially at a time when expenses are rising more quickly than revenues, makes a real difference to a farmer’s or rancher’s bottom line. “Offering an incentive to producers to convert their cultivation to forage is an extremely cost-effective means for increasing grassland and makes good agronomic sense. Essentially, the program covers approximately 40 – 50 per cent of the producer’s seed investment.”

In addition to helping cattle producers and their herds, more seeded forage acres also benefits waterfowl. Bishop explains that research shows that the level of waterfowl nesting and success is significantly higher in areas of perennial cover or grasslands than in cultivated fields. It also helps with other conservation measures such as critical wetland restoration efforts.

Fun And Learning At VIBE Day

This year’s junior high wellness conference, VIBE Day, focused on fun and educational learning opportunities for students on January 27 at J.R Robson School.

Three hundred and fifty-nine students attended including; VES Grade 6, St. Jerome’s Grades 6 -9, J.R. Robson Grad es 7- 9, Cland onal d Grad e 6, Mannville Grades 6-9, and (for the first time) Kitscoty School Grade 8 attended too.

Two Mannville school buses and one Kitscoty bus did not run due to the freezing rain conditions, but this did not discourage children getting to VIBE Day as a lot of parents stepped up and did the driving.

“This year we have new sessions like kickboxing, human-hungry hippo and mindfulness. The mindfulness sessions are all about slowing down and learning to relax, take in your environment…smell your coffee,” said VIBE Coordinator Pat Calyniuk. “Everyone gets yoga this year.

Usually, the children all join in and really

enjoy the day.

“We have great people coming in today to give sessions on nutrition and healthy living advice from Christie Docking. Curtis Gorkoff is here from Be Fit for Life, and Kim Ruptash is giving talks to students on tobacco addictions,” said Calyniuk.

A range of diverse sessions were put on by VIBE throughout the day, with the help of community partners including: the Vermilion RCMP, Battle River Victim Services, Interval Home, Sexual Assault Center, Walking Through Grief,

Addictions and Mental Health, Tobacco Reduction, Addictions Worker sessions, AHS Children’s Rehab Services, Be Fit for Life, AHS Nutritionist, BTPS/ECACS Occupation and Health Safety, Family School Liaison, J.R. Robson Staff, and community members.

There were 21 different sessions in total organized throughout the day.

Teachers from all the schools attended to provide supervision. The entire event was free including snacks and lunch. “All the feedback has been very positive,” said Calyniuk.

The Vermilion Wellness Coalition and the Vermilion River Archers Club hosted free archery lessons at the Lt/ Col. Craig Armories on Friday, Jan. 29 (P.D. Day). Ken Schwartz and other archery club members coached fourteen young archers, with a special emphasis on safety.

Shannon Leonard, one of the event organizers for the fundraiser dance held for Bently Warren at the Elks Hall on Jan. 24, said the event was a great success and raised $3,104 through ticket sales and a silent auction.

Bently was diagnosed with Stage 3 Subglottic Stenosis at the age of 13 months and it is rare, and in Bently’s case, a congenital disease that is lifethreatening. His airway is 75 per cent closed and requires surgery to open.

Children and adults embraced the Frozen theme, based on the hit Disney movie, and Olaf the snowman was happy to dance with scaled-down versions of Princesses Elsa and Anna.

Farmwives In Profile Book Signing Billi J Miller, author of Farmwives in Profile, was at the Eastalta Co-op on Jan 29 and 30 to sign copies of her book that was published on Jan. 13. Miller said sales have been going well and that she has had to restock her supply three times. The book has also garnered a lot of press. “I’m so happy to get the word out about these wonderful women,” said Miller.

The book features 17 interviews with 17 farmwives and includes traditional recipes and photography. Due to his condition, Bently is unable to fly, and the family will have to drive to Toronto for his appointment, which is a three-day trip.

Leonard said she is impressed with the community suppor t the Warren family has received since Bently’s diagnosis.

“I think the community would suppor t any child who is so sick,” said Leonard. “And the Warren’s are really well thought of. Hailey, (Bently’s sister) has a lot of friends who want to

help too,” including Leonard’s daughter who has danced with Hailey.

Bently could not be at the dance be c ause of the r isk of c atc hing a virus, but a beaming 9-year-old Hailey was there to greet people at the door as they arrived.

Leonard said she is scaling back her fundraising efforts this year but will c ontinue to work on behalf of causes that are close to her heart.

Habitat Pancake Fundraiser Volunteer Gwen Kibblewhite and Habitat for Humanity Chair (Vermilion) Lynda Jacejko greeted people at the Knights of Columbus Pancake Breakfast at the Elks Hall on Sunday, Jan. 31. The money raised from the breakfast will go toward the final $15,000 that needs to be raised for the Habitat house. The new owners Brandy Robertson and her two children were handed the keys to the house on Jan. 27 after a dedication ceremony.

The Tigers with their back up against the wall faced a tough test on Friday, January 22 as the first place Wainwright Bisons paid a visit to Vermilion.

The Tigers who sat 6 points back of 8th place Lloydminster at game time needed to come up with a big win. The Bisons came out and took it to the Tigers, blasting 17 shots on goal and leading 2-0 after the first. The cats made some adjustments between the first and second periods and put forth a better effort in the 2nd and managed to pull within one. Some undisciplined play early in the 3rd cost the Tigers as the Bisons scored 2 more on the powerplay to come away with a 4-1 win. Layne Zack had the lone goal for the Tigers.

hole as the Bandits beat Vegreville on Friday to move that much further ahead of the Tigers for the final playoff spot. Heading into the January 24 matchup in Saddle Lake the tides had turned and the Tigers find themselves chasing the Vegreville Rangers who have slipped into the 8th position.

The Rangers sat 6 points up on the Tigers heading into the game. The Tigers and Warriors both came out flat early Sunday evening. Neither team took control of the game as sloppy play in both ends meant a busy evening for the goaltenders. The Tigers were

the aggressor racking up a monstrous 49 shots on goal while the Warriors responded with 34. The Tigers opened the scoring early in the 2nd period as Lucas Dennill inched closer to the double digit scoring mark, by pounding home his 9th of the season.

Veteran forward Dylan Elke dropped an R.A. Dickey knuckler from just inside the blueline that fooled the Warriors netminder and squeaked in the 5 hole for a 2-0 lead. An unfortunate giveaway in the defensive zone cost Danton Brooks his second shutout of the season as the Tigers topped the Warriors 3-1 to inch

closer to a playoff spot. Carter Myhovich added an empty netter, his 7th of the season.

News and Notes: The Tigers currently sit 4 points back of 8th place Vegreville.

The Rangers have 2 games in hand on the Tigers. The Tigers returned to action on Friday, Jan 29 and Saturday, January 30 as the Saddle Lake Warriors and St. Paul Canadiens make their final trips to Vermilion this season.

There was a lot of action at the Vermilion Stadium on Jan. 29 as well as a large crowd on hand for Minor Hockey Night that saw the Vermilion Jr. B Tigers shred Saddle Lake 8 – 0.

The Saddle Lake team was on the fritz from the beginning. Their bus broke down on the way to Vermilion which

resulted in the game being delayed by approximately one hour and the Tigers had the ice to themselves for most of the warm up.

They warmed up so much they were on fire, scoring three of the eight goals within minutes of each other in the first period alone, and deftly capitalizing on their scoring opportunities throughout the game.

As it was Minor Hockey Night, admission was free for children who sported their minor hockey jersey. After the warm up four players from the Atom division took to the ice and were each presented the Gary Ferbey Award, by Lawrence Ferbey.

Coaches from the division select the players they feel best demonstrate the spirit of this award which includes: open and visible displays of sportsmanship; 90 per cent team practice attendance; 90 per cent game attendance; and an open and visible display of enthusiasm for the sport. The four winners were: Deyton Selte, Caelyn Bykewich, Breanne Gourley, and Alexis Garnier.
