The Key To A Whodunit

J.R. Robson Drama Players Perform J.R. Robson’s drama club students performed Michael Druce’s comedic whodunit mystery, “Murder at the Pie Auction” on Jan. 21 and Jan. 22 in the school’s gym. The cast members rose to the occasion and delivered the tart dialogue with great comedic timing. In the rare instance the fourth wall was broken, the actors managed to roll with it like experts.

A live pie auction took place at the end of the play that saw Steven Bodkura assume the role of the auctioneer. He created a slight but hilarious breach in auctioneer’s etiquette when he raised the price of a bid from $20 to $1,000, but it was all for a good cause. The pie auction and play is the club’s major fundraiser for the year. Teacher and director, Ms. Ishaq said close to $300 was raised from the pie auctions. Stay tuned for the Drama Players’ next performance at the end of Feb. which will be improvisational. Make Resolutions For A Successful Lifestyle Change

It’s that time of year again and New Year’s resolutions have people looking for the quick-fix to their Christmas weight gain.

C e r t i f i e d E xe r c i s e Phy s i o l o g i s t and Be Fit for Life Coordinator Curtis Gorkoff, offers good advice to consider when setting New Year’s resolutions this January; “It’s seems like everybody jumps on the New Year’s resolution band wagon every year because it’s the thing to do. A resolution is a goal and a lot of people make resolutions, but they don’t have a plan about how they are going to achieve them.

“People need to set realistic goals. If you have a pre-existing health problem then you need to go and see a doctor before you begin a fitness work out

plan.

“You should star t with an activity that interests you or with something you like. If you don’t like working out in the gym then it won’t last very long.

Start by signing up for a group fitness class; it’s less intimidating than going to the gym if you have been inactive for a long time. “ Sometimes people want to see change happen right away, even if they do see change they can’t maintain it for very long because they don’t have a plan. To maintain change you have to make the goal to improve your lifestyle from here on out not just lose weight,” said Gorkoff.

“Think about where you want to be one year from now. It isn’t that hard when you’ve got a realistic plan that works for you.

“People should start slow and get

professional help, instead of thinking a 12- week program will work, think more like a permanent lifest yle change.

Think about how you feel, think about how much energy you have, and think a b o ut h ow mu c h yo ur fi t n e s s ha s improved in a functional way and think about how your clothes fit - not just the number on the scales!

“It’s all about building confidence and achieving one small goal at a time and then another and another,” advises Gorkoff.

“The food you eat must go hand in hand with your exercise regime but do it in a realistic way. If you are losing more than one or two pounds a week it’s too extreme. Canada’s Food Guide online is a good indicator on what nutritional plan to follow.

“If you want to get healthy, get fit and lose weight, then you have to change the way you eat and the amount of exercise that you do and with a positive mental attitude - you have a winning formula.”

Qualified with a degree in Kinesiology, Gorkoff has worked in the exercise science profession for the past 15 years, as the fire fighter fitness instructor at Lakeland College and with physical literacy programming in the elementary schools.

Scottish Spirit Alive And Kicking In Mannville

Jim Storch, emcee for the Robbie Burns festivities that took place at the Mannville Rec. Centre on Jan. 23, said there’s nothing that compares to the energy of a Robbie Burns Night.

“It was sold out,” he added.

Included in the evening was the traditional Address to the Haggis, performed by 92-year-old Dr. Stewart Hunter, who was made a lifetime member of the Mannville Vermilion Highland Dance Club three years ago in appreciation of his continued support of the club.

Following the address, attendees were

required to sing and/or read for their haggis with excerpts from some wellknown epigrams, songs, and poems written by Robbie Burns.

Grizzly Bear Transmission Project Open House

People residing within the area where new transmission facilities are being planned for the Grizzly Bear Transmission Project, were invited to attend a four hour open house at the Vermilion Regional Centre on Jan. 21 that was hosted by ATCO Electric.

The proposed project will be located approximately 21 km southwest of Vermilion and is required to connect new wind generation facilities to the electrical grid which will include the construction of a new 144-kilovolt (kV) switching station (called Steele 2016S) and approximately 20 km of a new single-circuit 144-kV transmission line.

The developments are needed in the Vermilion and Vegreville areas to connect the Grizzly Bear Creek Wind

The open house was intended to gather feedback from landholder s regarding the proposed route.

T hi s c o nsult at i o n, w hi c h i s o ne of the conditions that has to be met before approval by the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) as set out in Rule 007, is the second stage of ATCO’s project schedule which began in December with project notification.

According to the newsletter provided at the open house, the proposed route can be adjusted based on conversations with and feedback from landowners through the public consultation process.

T h e AU C s t r o n g l y e n c o u r a g e s affected parties to participate in initial public consultation as it may lead to greater influence on project planning and what is submitted to the AUC for approval and may have a bearing further down the line if objections cannot be resolved.

A route concept map was on display at the open house which according to information provided by ATCO, took into account such considerations as: proximity to residences; environmentally sensitive areas; wetlands; existing infrastructure; visual factors; quarter and section lines; planned developments; agriculture operations; construction and land acquisition costs and other special considerations.

A project update in March and consul-

tations will continue until May which is when ATCO plans on filing its application with the AUC and Industry Canada for approval of the proposed route of the transmission facilities and the telecommunications tower respectively.

Regarding the Grizzly Bear Telecommunication Tower, The County of Minburn does not have a consultation process for tower development, so the project will follow Industry Canada’s default public consultation process. The

Wo r k i n g i n t h e newspaper industry, especially when your paper’s survival revolves around adver tising sales, can give you an insight into our economy that no one can even try and deny!! Every business you contact regarding their advertising needs will say and explain the same thing over and over, “Sorry we don’t have anything right now. It has been very slow, we had to cut our expenses, and that was the first to go.” I can totally understand where they are coming from as this recession (which our government has either chosen to ignore or too stupid to realize) has already hurt or is starting to hurt many of the businesses in our area and surrounding areas.

One real estate website from Lloydminster alone, shows 93,199 square feet of shop and office space that is available for lease or for sale, and the talk is, there is actually quite a bit more than what I found on this one site. At one time you couldn’t find lease space to save your life. Some local and area businesses are reporting sales down by 25 per cent or more.

When I look out my office window here in our downtown area, the street that was once bustling with cars and people has become quiet and considerably less busy.

companies and “other manufacturing and service companies related to the sector” accounting for 78 per cent of the reported layoffs in 2015, according to Alberta Jobs, and more are expected.

Businesses are struggling, there are no two ways about it, but there are ways according to business sites, to survive a downturn (recession) like we are in now, especially for the small business owner.

2) Cut back on any unnecessary expenses- to me, this is a no-brainer if your business spends money on frivolous things such as parties, luncheons and drinks with clients and any other thing that has no direct impact on your company’s growth, then it’s time to cut

On January 3rd, 2016, at 4:57 AM, Ve r m i l i o n R C M P received a 911 complaint of an armed home invasion. A male had stolen two rifles and ammunition from a residence and forced entry into a neighbouring home. The female resident was robbed at gun point, her vehicle and cash were stolen. The male fled the scene in the woman’s car. The RCMP were able to Identify the male shortly after through inquiries and it was found that he was

Lastly but not least Be committed and lead by example- If you are going to increase work time and cut back on salaries; start with yourself. Take a pay cut and work longer hours; this way, your staff will see the amount of effort you put in and with that, nobody will have the right to complain.

So there you have it. Times right now absolutely look bleak, and we are all very concerned about how this year will go for our businesses and personal finances, but I think if we all stick together within our little town supporting each other’s business locally and following a few rules to help your business survive, I think our town can come out on top of this yucky worrisome recession or downturn as the government calls it!

4) Run your business on pay as you go- This strategy is really important if you have your business survival at heart. During a recession, you should make sure all miscellaneous business expenses are made based on corresponding sales.

Some experts prefer to call this technique “bootstrapping.” For instance, suppose you need some new office equipment, or you need to pay certain bills; you should strive to make sure that such expenses are made from the sales generated within that time period.

Never pull out money from your reserve to settle such bills or expenses.

travelling to Slave Lake, Alberta. Bradley BRAZEAU, 30 years old, was located and arrested by Slave Lake RCMP after abandoning the stolen vehicle. The arrest came as a result of solid police work, community involvement and communication with Slave Lake Detachment.

The stolen rifles were recovered with the vehicle. BRAZEAU has been charged with robbery with a firearm, break and enter and commit robbery, theft over $5000, theft of a motor vehicle, as well as several other charges. BRAZEAU has appeared in Alberta Provincial Court and remains in custody.

he told me…if your feet get cold put on a warm hat, if you retain the heat your feet will warm, if you continue to have heat loss through your head and neck your feet will not warm without aid or going indoors.

So, I sat there and thought what would I do in a wilderness survival situation with what I had on my immediate person, one scenario would be to build a snow and wood debris shelter. If I could catch my non-stop snow monster, grab her and cuddle up with her being a “hot water bottle” one could survive once the body core was rewarmed. However, if I have been even in mild hypothermia, I would need to be rewarmed by other means, which would be a fire. I checked all I had on me; absolutely nothing, but what I was wearing and my trusty disposable Bic lighter, one could use the chain saw or quad…gas, spark plug, minor to major burns. In the case of quad or chain saw that I had with me, I could strip some insulation out of my winter coveralls and soak in gas for a fire starter, remove the plug and start a fire that way easy enough. Not a recommended method unless done/practised with someone experienced. So, I decided I was walking the dog and got lost in a white out blizzard scenario, too simple, build wind shelter and light a fire with lighter…right?

Not as simple as it sounds even under ideal circumstances, first off my lighter was in outer my coveralls. When butane is cold it will not cooperate; it’s impossible to light even with warm hands. So knowing this, I put the lighter in a warm pocket next to my body inside the coveralls while I built a quick wind shelter off a big deadfall tree and gathered firewood and starter.

Firestarter was an issue. Even with a well working lighter flame the smallest poplar tree twigs are hard to light with the flame. I could have dug up some dead grass and dried it out next to my body,

but now didn’t have the time. I ended up finding a dead poplar tree that was standing, and entire bark layers stripped off with some dry on the south facing side of the tree. Stripping thin layers off the inside of the bark produced a straw like bundle, which was even hard to keep burning.

Soon I had a roaring fire that the pup and I sat next too. However, I have to admit it was hard, and I have been a wilderness survival instructor pretty much all my life and was nowhere near even mild stage hypothermia. With even mild hypothermia one has no motor skills in their hands and/or mind making simple feats extremely hard. In a real case scenario, I would have been in trouble, one without knowledge or practise would have faced a life threatening situation.

Many use the disposable lighter as their main fire source, but it can be one of the worst in many cases. My favorite is what I would carry on most wilderness adventures, three sources, lighter, wooden matches in a waterproof case and a modern flint and steel. With a proper fire starter such as normal cotton baton soaked in wax, the flint and steel are the easiest, in any case, matches in bundles of three is second and can act as its own fire starter in some cases.

Anyone that visits the wilderness even camping or fishing, I challenge them to go out in deep winter and practise these skills, under less than ideal conditions this may prove to be a real challenge for you.

As a kid growing up on a farm we had the experience of seeing life ending, and also being there when things were being born. Of course the seeing birth and life starting was much more rewarding then the other.

Living on the farm meant we also had to kill animals to have meat, chickens, pigs, cattle and all like that. We also saw them being born and raised them!!

Ever y living thing has an expir y date; yes death comes to all living things. Good thing there is a way to pass our life down to our descendants. Every living thing has a way to do that ver y thing, isn’t that a wonder ful thing that our kids can keep the race alive? Every plant has a way to keep life going by producing seed and a way for its being able to carry on. Think how the smallest creature even has a plan. Guess that

Coming To Terms With Death

means there is also a planner!!

Very young in life, I can remember how I felt when a boy my age was taken by an accidental shooting and how suddenly a person I knew was just a memory. That was such a trauma as I remember, and the next thing, around the same time, my Grandpa Wolters, who was a ver y big part of my life, was taken one fall day.

That time, my Mom thought we kids should go say “Goodbye”. That vision of my dear old friend haunted me for the longest time. This was seeing death in a whole dif ferent way.

I wasn’t very old when my father b e c a m e i l l a n d h e p a s s e d away before I’d really had all the lessons of life h e c o ul d have t au g ht m e.

Made life a bit rougher than it could have been, you grow up quick in those kinds of situations. All kinds of losses came our way and death causes losses that are dif ficult to overcome.

As I became an adult I was called

on to be a pall bearer and help carry old friends and neighbors on their final trip. Pretty sobering situations.

You, of course, realize in all certainty at times like that, yes, your time is coming. It’s all just a matter of time!!

As time went on and you said goodbye to friends and family, some so young you wonder how come some beautiful young folks were taken suddenly and old folks who have suffered for years are still soldiering on wishing, I think in some cases, “When will my suffering end!?”

There were times you heard of folks driving when they weren’t really fit due to drink, and then in a tragic happening, I won’t call it an accident, we lost a family member because someone was coming home from a celebration and she got in the way.

My, the grief that caused the family is far reaching. I have been asked to speak and play at MADD meetings. There they have a board about 8 x 10 ft covered with pictures about three inches square. Ever yone a victim of the same problem!! That’s

New members appointed to the Environment Committee Environment Committee Chair and Councillor for the Town of Vermilion Robert Pulyk said last week that the Environment Committee is looking forward to working on new strategies with their new members in 2016. “ We h a d a f e w m e m b e r s t h a t moved on so we were getting down in numbers so we put out a request and to our surprise we have been overwhelmed with the response. It’s great, some had experience with wildlife and environment issues from other communities and they wanted to bring their expertise to our group,” said Pulyk.

“The max number of members we can have on the committee is 14 and now we have 12. The more hands on deck we have the more work we can achieve as a committee and deal with the environmental concerns of the surrounding community.

“The three areas in our strategic plan which we are focused on working on; the community garden, advocacy and stewardship and promoting recycling and the reduce waste program,” explained Pulyk.

“Depending on grant funding we would hope to have the pollinator garden finished by fall 2016.

People from the community often jump in and volunteer when we are

working on the gardens during the summer months and that is always welcomed,” said Pulyk.

Council for the Town of Vermilion accepted the appointments of Juliane Ollinger, (County Representative) Francey Repp, Lloyd Rumbolt and Jared Fehr to the Environment Committee for the duration of a two-year term at Town Council, January 19.

The appointments of Jessy Cote, Nadine Ferbey (County Representative) and Kevin Romeo (Count y Representative) to the Environment Commit tee for a three-year term, expiring on January 2019 were also accepted.

I have lost so many friends and family that were so much younger than me that had such talent and k n o w l e d g e t o s h a r e, t h at w o u l d benefit us all, and that of course went along with them.

As we live our day to day lives, we think when we’re younger we have an endless well of time to draw on, so it seems we don’t treasure time like we do when we get into the twilight period of our lives, when we surely expect our time must be getting short.

Three score and ten- the normal life.

But, I’ve found there ARE no guarantees, nobody has any sure enough for certain any time at all.

A friend of mine commented to me one time, “The only breath you’re sure of, is the one you’ve just taken, who knows if you’ll get another”.

A couple of old seniors talking over the fence and one said, “I sure wish I knew where I’m going to die”. “What in the world do you want to know that for?” “Well”, said the other, “I’d stay the heck away from there.”

A taxi ride from here to there costs $15.00.

Wow, I think, although I keep my surprise to myself. It’s been awhile.

The driver is friendly. Are you busy? Not at all. Not busy. The economy. Layoffs. He says people talk when they ride and even those who still have jobs are worried. We arrive and I pay. He asks if I need another ride and if so invites me to ask for his car number. He’s a pleasant guy. I would have done that, if the pedestrian within hadn’t nudged me.

I walk regularly but it never seems like enough. My good partner, our old dog is... old. And despite her enthusiasm, most days walking with her is a slow slow endeavour.

Together, we don’t go too far. Not anymore.

I hire a taxi because who knows how long it takes to walk fifty-three blocks? Not I. I did not want to be late. Hence, my $15.00

taxi ride is both practical and necessary, if expensive.

After my appointment, I decide to walk awhile, maybe stop at a café and call car number whatever it is from there. I brought my toque. Actually, I brought my balaclava, too. I like to be prepared. I did, however, forget my iPod. Can traffic be musical?

Sure. Add some rhythm to your step and listen closely to the crunch of boots on snow. Slipping a few times adds a little dynamic. I make the best of it.

I do not stop at a café. It’s a windless day and not terribly frigid. Time is not an issue.

So I just keep walking. There are streets in this town I’ve never seen. There are sneaky paths I’ve never noticed weaving behind houses in neighbourhoods where I’ve never been. There are many cars on the roads. The paths are peaceful though.

On observation, I wish the people who spray paint the backs of residential fences were more mindful of their ‘art’. How many ways can you spray penis shapes and still

keep it interesting? And the scrawl of what I guess must be someone’s ‘tag’ leaves me unmoved. Make an effort, I say aloud to the bare trees.

I don’t meet any other pedestrians for a long while. It’s nice. I’m not looking for a friend here. I am...exploring my surroundings. Even in familiar territory there can plenty that goes unnoticed. Step off the street and enter one of those sneaky, hardly used paths and see where it leads. You can always find your way in the town where you live.

When I get close to one of the high schools, the one I graduated from 150 years ago actually, I see a few groups of pedestrians. They talk pretty loud. Kids on the path leading to the mall. Their coats are open, just as my own would have been a long time back. I couldn’t feel the cold then either. A couple of guys sit in an idling truck, sucking back a cigarette or two between classes.

They all ignore my presence. I am a ghostly, weirdly dressed old person passing briefly

among them.

Do you wish to feel conspicuous? Be the lone pedestrian standing at a crosswalk awaiting the change of lights at a major intersection. Try not to adjust your posture or pull up your pants. It’s okay to discretely wipe your nose. You never know when someone’s aiming an iPhone and capturing your vulnerability to laugh at later. Hum. It helps to stabilize you. I note that the little walking man’s appearance is ever so brief.

I’m only halfway across the street before the flashing red hand of admonishment appears. What’s the hurry, I wonder? What if I couldn’t walk with speed? Is that guy revving his engine menacingly or is it just my imagination?

I feel only a little bad that I didn’t call for the taxi. If business is slow, every fare makes a difference. But I made a good choice. There are quiet benefits to allowing your steps to take you where they may.

And a breath of crisp winter air can only be savoured when you opt to forfeit that ride.

How would you like to wake up and have your oatmeal, alread y swe etene d and ready to eat, There is no need to cook, you just open the refrigerator door and there it is. That makes it very handy for early morning breakfasts.

This is a popular trend on various internet food blogs and Pinterest. It is called overnight oats. It is a mixture of milk, large flake oats and a sweetener. It is often made in cute pint sized mason jars. The ingredients go into the jars raw, and are then left in the refrigerator for 12 plus hours, before they are ready for you to eat them.

jars, you can use cups or glasses. I have tested several recipes and I have some information to share with you.

Some recipes suggest making the oats up in the evening to have ready for the morning. I did this and I found the oats still tasted a bit raw and chalky. After 24 hours, the oats had the smooth and creamy flavor that the bloggers were boasting about.

The beauty of this is that you can make u p a who le week ’s wor t h of breakfasts in advance. You can use regular dair y milk, coconut milk, almond milk or the milk of your choice.

You can create a lot of different variations by adding either 1/4 cup berries, 1/4 cup fruit or 1 tablespoon nuts, raisins, protein powder and spices.

You can use large flake rolled oats or old fashioned rolled oats. You can use

your favorite sweetener such as brown sugar, honey, stevia or coconut sugar.

Raisin Cinnamon Overnight Oats 1/2 cup large flake rolled oats 1/2 cup milk 2 teaspoons maple syrup 1 tablespoon raisins 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon.

Combine all the ingredients, in you container. Stir, store covered in your refrigerator for a minimum of 12 hours (longer is better).

Banana Nut Overnight Oats 1/2 cup large flake rolled oats 1/2 cup milk 1/2 small banana mashed 2 teaspoons maple syrup 1 tablespoon chopped walnuts.

Combine all the ingredients, in you container. Stir, store covered in your refrigerator for a minimum of 12 hours

The Kalyna Country Primary Care Network is offering a second Happiness Basics workshop in Vermilion.

“Happiness Basics is a program that is based on positive psychology,” said Arielle Farkash, program facilitator. “It focuses on what happy people do and some of the skills that they use.”

Positive psychology is a relatively new field that focuses on creating positive states of mind and positive emotions.

Farkash said the program will teach 17 skills, some that participants may already be familiar with, such as: counting your blessings, savoring life’s joys and/or writing gratitude letters. She added that although some people may already be employing these skills, they

may not think that they make much of an impact.

Farkash added that employing these skills and strategies can help to shift your perspective but not ever y skill needs to be applied on a daily basis to reap the benefits of positive psychology.

“We don’t expect people to use every skill every day and say ‘oh, I have to use skill number 11.’ You won’t like every skill that you come across, so we provide a larger range so people can pick out what works for them and use them on a regular basis,” she added.

“We provide a lot of statistics such as, if you do this skill one time it will increase your happiness by this percentage. It’s kind of interesting to hear the statistics.”

Following the program past participants have reported an improvement in

mood, health, relationships vitality and energy as well as experiencing less pain stated Farkash.

An information session will take place on Feb. 11 at the provincial building’s conference room from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

“The info session will allow people to come and hear what the program is based on, how the program is laid out, ask questions and even try out one or two of the skills taught in the program.”

T h e c o st of t h e pro gr am i s $15 (covers journal provided to participants) and is appropriate for people ages 16 and up and anyone is eligible, whether depressed, languishing or flourishing.

CLASS Seeks New Volunteers

CLASS (Community Learning for Adult Students Society) held a volunteer information night seeking English language tutors, mentors and helpers at the Vermilion Public Library on January 20.

The program suppor ts people’s settlement in Alberta and Canada by offering courses that will help improve English and develop life and work skills.

CLASS CEO and Literacy Coordinator Chandra Blair is an instructor of the LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) on Monday and Thursday evenings from 6-9 p.m. in Vermilion.

Blair says she is now activity seeking volunteers to help with English teaching and organizational help. “ Vo l u n t e e r i n g b r i n g s p e o p l e together, it promotes personal growth and self esteem and you get a chance to give back. You can make a difference,” said Blair.

“English language tutors are required

to give a once or twice a week commitment. Training will be available online with step by step guides and lessons.”

“You become friends and build a relationship and a strong bond with these people. It is ver y rewarding and that is what life is all about,” said CLASS Literacy Director Gary Walsh.

Volunteers are encouraged to attend orientation, training sessions and monthly luncheons.

International families are invited to come on Tuesday mornings to learn songs and rhymes that will help them with their English speaking and reading.

The Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada Rural Delivery Program (LINC RDP) is a face-toface, online or home study part-time program designed for immigrants.

There are programs available for parents, extended family and/or caregivers and children 0-5 years.

“Rhyming is an easy way for parents and children to remember English words,” said Blair.

KinderKids at Mannville School have been enjoying skating as part of their phys ed program in January.

Kindergarten has been a flurry of activity!

The kinders have been learning about how snowflakes are formed, catching snowflakes and looking at them with magnifying glasses, and reading and writing stories about snowmen. Mrs. Kerri Lorenson has been visiting our class each week introducing them to the “Worry Woos’ - a group of monsters with very different worries. The kinders are learning and discussing different ways we can help ourselves deal with the things in life that might make us worry, such as loneliness and negative thoughts.

The kinders have also returned to the arena

to practice their newly acquired skating skills and enjoy playing with the pool noodles and chasing the balls around the ice.

Our secondary students union wanted us to let you know that activities have been well underway this school year. The last week of December was spirit week which generated lots of interest. The first day they had a candy guess, won by Roisin Dalton. Great job, Roisin! The next day the kids tried to guess which teacher did which Santa interpretation, followed by Wrap-AFriend, Christmas Dress Up and finally the traditional School Wide Bingo, which was followed by our first talent show. In January, we have had Twin Day, Flannel Friday and a Crazy Hair Day. We are excited to see the wonderful things the kids come up with.

Mrs. Riedel’s Grade 5 class was in charge of running the virtue of the month activity and doing the healthy school bulletin board this month. They made 2016 healthy resolutions for the board. Each student made two nutritional resolutions and one physical, and one mental health resolution to work on for the year. If you are in the school, check out their bulletin board in the multipurpose room.

The number of school-age children home alone has risen over the last few years. The main factors are thought to be an increase in the number of working parents per household. Grade 5’s participated in ‘Safety for Kids’ Program that is designed to provide children 10 years or older with the necessary skills and knowledge to be safe and responsible when home alone for short

periods of time.

The babysitter’s course is once again being offered in the Grade 6 class. Mrs. Eli Myhovich will be their instructor as we partner with FCSS to offer this.

Our warning bell in the morning rings at 8:50 a.m. and students start the day at 8:55 with the singing of ‘Oh, Canada’. If your child is arriving later than this, they need to go through the main doors of the school and advise the office that they are late. Late arrival of students also disrupts the start of the day, so please try to arrive a little earlier.

Students in Grades 6 – 9 will be attending the Annual VIBE Mental Wellness Day on January 27th in Vermilion. Some of the activities they were able to sign up for were: Yoga, Basic First Aid, Woodworking, KickBoxing.

Interior Design Technology Program Reaccredited By NKBA

Lakeland College’s interior design technology program has once again met the stringent standards for National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) reaccreditation.

Interior design instructors were notified last week that the program’s kitchen and bath curriculum met the educational standards established by the NKBA. It is currently the only NKBA accredited program in Canada and one of only 55 accredited programs in North America.

Lakeland first earned full NKBA accreditation in 1999. Unlike previous accreditations when NKBA representatives visited the Vermilion campus to speak with people and review curriculum and student work, this was a digital reaccreditation.

Faculty members Fiona McLeod, Greg Plant and Rochelle Horne submitted a selfstudy report and an analysis of competencies related to four categories: planning and design, construction systems, business and project management, and products/materials. NKBA’s evaluation included classroom observations, a curriculum review meeting with faculty, a presentation of projects, and interviews with students, faculty and administration. The accreditation renewal is good for seven years although the NKBA does require the program to submit student work samples every year.

Being an NKBA accredited program provides Lakeland with a special niche in the post-secondary education market, says McLeod.

“For our students, it means they have

the opportunity to enter NKBA student design competitions and they have access to NKBA scholarships. It’s especially valuable for those interested in becoming a kitchen or bath specialist,” she says.

Students who graduate from an NKBA accredited program are also uniquely qualified to earn an NKBA certification designation.

Lakeland College students have excelled in NKBA design competitions, earning a minimum of an honourable mention every year for the past 12 years.

In September it was announced that Laura Cobb placed first in the NKBA/General Electric Charette Competition while BreeAnne Hubick finished third. The NKBA Student Kitchen Design Competition was won by Lakeland’s Kayla Soto. Cobb finished in third place.

Horne and McLeod along with secondyear interior design students are in Las Vegas from Jan. 16-23. They are attending the 2016 Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) which is Jan. 19-21. In addition to KBIS, faculty and students are touring the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health, an iconic architectural landmark in Las Vegas designed by architect Frank Gehry. They are also visiting the Las Vegas City Center which received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.

Lakeland’s interior design technology program is a two-year diploma program based at the Vermilion campus. Students learn in a studio setting where they master design fundamentals, drafting, space planning and more. Visit lakelandcollege.ca/ design for more information.

Superintendent, Bob Allen, visited VES on Januar y 18. He got involved in a few class activities, including making a strong vase in Grade 3 science and reading buddies with the Grade 1 and 7 students. Heather Rentz was in teaching 6B students about Digital Citizenship. Mr. Allen was in during that time, watched her teach, and then interacted with the kids while they had the opportunity to Google themselves to check out their Digital Footprint.

As an annual check-up on the education system, Alberta Education will be conducting its annual Accountabil-

ity Pillar Survey, providing an opportunity for Alberta Education and school authorities to ensure that we are equipping students for success. In January, parents of students in Grades 4, 7 and 10 will receive a survey from Alberta Education. In February, students in Grades 4, 5 and 6 and all teachers will be completing their surveys online at school. Information gathered during this annual check-up is reported on in the following areas: 1) Safe & Caring Schools, 2) Student Learning Opportunities, 3) Preparation for Lifelong Learning, World of Work, & Citizenship 4) Parental Involvement and 5) Continuous School Improvement. Your participation in the survey helps provide important information on the quality of education your child is receiving, so we encourage

Buffalo Trail is very excited about hosting its first technology professional development day, called Pathfinders Day, on January 29. For the first time, BTPS teachers and support staff will be getting together to collectively learn about technology in one location. The main objective of the day is to build BTPS’s entire staff’s capacity in the effective use of technology to enhance the learning for the students. The day includes a keynote speaker and local and guest presenters, with over 60 action packed hands-on skill based sessions.

On February 5, VES will proudly host our seventeenth annual science fair. The fair is open to entries from interested VES students in Grades 1 through 6. Last year

we had over thirty entries, of which many were deemed excellent by our judges.

Our judges have always been interested members of the community, who have enjoyed the keen scientific minds of the students involved. St. Jerome’s Grade 6 to 9 students are excited to attend VIBE Day at J.R. Robson on Wednesday, Januar y 27. The day will be full of mental health wellness activities and fun! Some of the activities include a Fireman Obstacle course, Brainiacs, Human Hungry Hippos, Woodworking, kickboxing, Yoga, Team Building with the RCMP and Cupcake Decorating.

Students in Grade 1 to 5 have been having fun attending Red Cross Swim-

ming Instruction at the Vermilion Swimming Pool. They learn about water safety through a wide variety of interactive and fun activities.

The St. Jerome’s Sr. Girls Basketball Team placed 4th at the Assumption in Cold Lake on February 9. The girls have had a good start to the season and keep working hard to improve every game.

The girls have a couple weeks off of game play as they prepare for their final exams.

The Jr. Girls Basketball team held their annual home tournament this January 15/16. Both the Grade 6/7 team and Grade 8/9 teams participated along with

six other schools. The Grade 6/7 team fought hard all weekend as they continued to develop their skills. The Grade 8/9 team won their first two games taking them to the gold medal game. The girls played hard but were defeated by Paradise Valley 30-16. Congratulations girls on your silver medal!

Congratulations to the Grade 8/9 Jr. Boys Spartans Basketball team for displaying true Spartan teamwork and determination as they played the weekend with a short bench in St. Paul January 15/16. Congratulations to the Grade 6/7 Boy’s Basketball team for their hard play and winning the “Best Offense” in

their tournament in Marwayne during the January 15/16 weekend.

On Tuesday, February 9 at 1:30 p.m.

Concrete Theatre will be at St. Jerome’s presenting the delightful play “The Early Bloomer”. Students from Kindergarten to Grade 3 will join Maisy Daisy and her best buds in their hilarious adventures in the 5th Row of the Garden Plot!

Variations of cereals, toasts and spreads, yogurt, porridge, and more are offered each day. These breakfast items serving as meals or snack to start of students’ days is funded substantially this year by the Vermilion location Rotary Club, Lions Club, and Farm Credit Canada.

Also contributing to J. R.’s breakfast program was last Thursday’s Tape-theTeacher noon-hour event. As students paid $1.00 per meter of duct tape in attempt to see if and how long I would cling to the wall before gravity overcame adhesion. I definitely felt the support. When students finished emptying their pockets of change and every piece of tape was strategically sticking me to the wall, I’d say we held on for a good 30 seconds!

Robson School will host VIBE Day on January 27, 2016 an will include around 500 people participating, including Marauders, students St. Jerome’s, Mannville School, Clandonald, Vermilion Elementary, over 30 presenters, and more than 20 staff and volunteers. The 21 different sessions will offer the involved grade 6, 7, 8, and 9 students with all kinds of mental health development.

The spotlight was on J. R. Robson’s Drama Players as they performed “Death at the Pie Auction” on Thursday and Friday of last week. The event featured theatrical talents of grade 7 students Owen Aitkin, Dawson Campbell, Victoria Newberry, Rebecca Irvine; grade 8 students Ali L’Heureux, Sydney Twigge,

Alyx Ward, Steven Bodurka; and Shane Newberry in grade 9.

It was a do or die scenario for the jungle cats as they faced two must win games.

Wednesday, Jan. 13 the Bandits from Lloydminster came to Vermilion as did the Onion Lake Border Chiefs on Friday, Jan. 15.

Vermilion has played well against the Bandits this year having won 2 of 3 meetings heading into Wednesday’s affair.

Both team came out strong to start the game, firing shots early and often. Matt Imray, the Bandits backstop was on his game giving up a lone powerplay goal to the Tigers in the first period as Lucas Dennill notched his 6th goal of the season.

Former Lakeland College basketball coach, Phil Allen passed away suddenly on Jan. 16 while on holidays with his wife, Denise, from an apparent heart attack.

“There has always been a concern with his heart,” said Al Rogan, Lakeland College’s athletic director. “But, when someone his age (63) passes away, it is a bit of a shock to the system.” Allen retired from Lakeland College two years ago, but stepped away as the head coach of the Rustlers in 2007 after a previous heart scare added Rogan.

“By the time he was done coaching at the college level he was the winningest coach in post secondary basketball in the country.”

Phil Allen has recorded the most postsecondary basketball victories than any other coach in Canada, securing 805 wins over the course of his 28 year coaching career.

Phil recently joined Basketball Alberta as their technical director and director of coaching development.

“Phil was quasi-retired,” added Rogan.

“After so many years as a coach, it’s kind of hard to quit cold turkey. Working for Basketball Alberta was right up his alley.”

Apar t from the winningest coach accolade, Phil’s career milestones include being inducted into the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Hall of Fame in 2014. In his 15 years behind the bench at SAIT his teams won nine ACAC Championships, including an unprecedented seven in a row (19801986) and he was named the ACAC Coach of the Year three times, and in 1983 was named the Coach of the Year by the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA).

“But if you’d ask him what his biggest accomplishment was, I think he would say it was being able to use basketball as a carrot to get kids to contribute to society and helping them to become coaches, to lead, and to become better people,” said Rogan.

“I think a lot of those he coached would say Phil actually changed their path in life to a better place, and I think in Phil’s mind that was his main goal all the time. I think he did an incredible job doing that.”

Rogan also attributed Allen’s coaching successes to being a great student of the game and always building on his knowledge base.

“If he didn’t know something he would find the answer somewhere.”

Rogan, who has also coached at the college level, believes Phil had the ability to make student athletes buy into his philosophy.

Some greasy work down low 5 minutes later was rewarded as Ian Gadsby chipped in his 4th of the season to tie it up. The Tigers then took control in the 2nd firing 18 shots on goal. The 3rd was all Vermilion as Lucas Dennill and Dalyn Borysiuk capped off a 3-1 win. Goalie Danton Brooks has been sensational as of late picking up 5 wins in his last 6 starts and is featuring a.949 save percentage over those starts.

The Tigers returned to home action Friday, Jan. 22 as the Wainwright Bisons

were in town and then the Tigers hit the road for a date with Saddle Lake on Sunday, Jan. 24.

News and Notes: Captain Nolan Blair suffered a lower body injury in the win against Onion Lake. No timetable on his return yet, however a few weeks is likely.

The Tigers sit 6 points back of 8th place Lloydminster with 2 games in hand. The Bandits have dropped 5 straight games.

During practice he would push but after practice he would sit down and have a very meaningful conversation about how life was going for you and he was able to separate things in that regard. The kids would want to play for Phil and they would work harder because Phil was Phil. He almost had a kid-like ability to believe in someone no matter who they were, where they came from, or what they did.”

This weekend Lakeland met Concordia. Both coaches of these teams played for Phil as student athletes.

“I just see these previous players of Phil who are still engaged in the game and are coaching. That’s the impact that you see from Phil’s coaching.”

Rogan said Phil Allen will be missed both as a person and in the sport of basketball.

“It’s a huge loss. He will not just be missed here at Lakeland, but across the province Coach Phil Allen with the Lakeland Rustlers. Photo submitted and the country as well.”
