The President of the School of Hope’s student led social justice club Hands of Hope (HOH), Meghan Hassan said the club was a little slow to get started this year, but she has high hopes of continuing to help their ongoing charities, as well as finding new ones to support.

“Previous members found the time commitment a little heavy so they didn’t return. We have just had a number of students join us in the past few weeks,” said the Grade 12 student.

This is good news for the Tears of Joy Ministry, as well as their sponsored child from Nicaragua, 5-year-old Marcela, and Bear Valley Rescue. Denise Kissel, a teacher who helps operate the HOH club at the School of Hope, said the students are heavily involved in suggesting worthy causes and charities to support.

Hassan suggested supporting Bear Valley Rescue (BVR) three years ago.

“I suggested animals. I have always loved horses and I first heard about BVR some years ago. Ever since then, I have been following the website,” she added.

BVR is a registered charity whose mission is to promote animal welfare by saving from slaughter usable and healthy horses and finding them good homes as well as to promote animal welfare by

rescuing injured or ailing animals from auctions and feedlots or abusive situations and rehabilitating them, or alleviating their suffering.

In an auction situation the horses can be bid on by slaughter houses and then sent overseas for meat.

According to the Canadian Horse Defence Coalition, which is a collective of people and national groups that have joined forces in order to ban the slaughter of equines for human consumption in Canada, as well as the export of live horses to other countries for the same purpose, horse slaughter is an $80M industry.

“It’s very disturbing what happens to them (horses). I am very passionate about trying to stop that,” said Hassan who is an equine technician and has horses of her own.

“Some of these horses are still healthy, some get dumped by their owners, some are foals born with the ‘wrong’ colour, some are family pets and some are wild horses.”

Hassan said BVR workers will try to outbid the meat buyers at auction, but they are not always successful.

BVR currently has 170 horses in their care, and are feeding over $500 in hay per day.

Mount Joy Snow Resort Aims High

When Ray Tatro sees snow, he said his heart starts to beat a little faster.

No d oubt, visions of sk iing d an c e in his head, as does the possibility of hosting the 2018 Saskatchewan Winter Games.

“If Lloydminster is successful in its bid to host the Games, it may be able to accelerate our plan by a year,” said Tatro, President of the Mount Joy Snow Resort.

Mount Joy Snow Resort is currently in phase one of a three-year $250,000

development plan which would allow the Resort to make snow from the top of the hill to the bottom.

“We feel that with what we’ve got in place, even if we don’t get the water to the top of the hill by 2018, that we would be a good host for the snowboard events. We’d certainly be able to handle the lower part of our hill and it would be a great viewing venue for spectators and easy access for the participants to be able to get up and down. If we had the water to the top of the hill we could do the whole thing, including the Alpine events.”

cost about $900,000 and half of that is funded through the province.

“So we may be able to benefit from some of that funding. We’re six miles into Alberta and it is the Saskatchewan Games, which would be something that may now allow us to do that. But it’s a possibility.

“There would be some things to work out. We have a written letter of support that has been submitted to the bid committee. But we will make the argument that it would be economically beneficial to Saskatchewan.”

Tatro added that Table Mountain has a good facility with chair lifts and North Battleford is also submitting a bid for the games.

“Even if we are not successful, we still think our three-year plan is doable, obviously the area is not what you would call booming at the moment, and it won’t be for a couple of years, but there are still people that support causes that seem to be of good value and that they feel strongly about supporting.”

This includes landowners Walter and Jean Harbin who have been on board with the resort since it began in 1966 (this is the 50th year of the Club) and who have just signed a new 15 year lease.

“They have been very generous to us all these years,” said Tatro.

Synergy Credit Union made a $10,000 donation, the Paradise Valley Recreation Board (through the County of Vermilion River) also contributed $10,000 and the Lloydminster Snowboard Club, which disbanded last year, dispersed their funds and donated $8,500.

Top Grade Construction is also donating a portion of their work.

“We did service for the contractor, so they’re a combination of donation and repaying us for what we did for them with our snow cannons last year. They’ll pay for the excavation and building of the reservoir.”

Tatro said they also have reserves and are awaiting a decision on a bid for $50,000 in provincial funding.

Part of the three-year plan is to build a replacement building for the pump house and maintenance building.

“We could struggle along if things don’t materialize with the provincial government. We’d still be putting a good product on the hill; it just takes more effort from our volunteers to operate like that.”

The Mount Joy Ski Resort is 100 per cent volunteer run.

“The more the years go by, the harder it is to get committed volunteers, so you want to make their job as easy as possible so you still have them coming. That’s another reason why all these improvements are being made.”

The bottom of the hill is set to open on Saturday, Jan. 9. A 50 th Anniversary Celebration Committee has been formed and Tatro said a celebration will be planned closer to mid-Feb. or March.

“We’d like to have the whole hill open, not just the bottom.”

That will be up to Mother Nature for the time being.

“This was a record breaking year,” said Charlotte Wasylik, president of the Vermilion River Naturalist Society, about the results of the Christmas Bird Count that took place in Vermilion on Dec. 19.

In Vermilion and area, 41 species and 4,340 individual birds were counted this year by 29 field observers and nine “ feeder watchers”. (People who keep track of how many birds stop at their own bird feeders). “ This year is a re c ord in our 26 years,” said Wasylik.

The Christmas Bird Count started in North America in 1900 and is coordinated by Bird Studies Canada. The Count takes place from Dec. 14 to Jan. 5. Each area that signs up picks a day

within this timeframe and is usually organized at the local level by a birding club or naturalist organization, like the Vermilion River Naturalist Society, that enlists volunteers to help with the count. Counts happen in over 2000 l o c ali t i e s t hr o u g h o u t t h e We ster n Hemisphere.

Also inc luded in the count were the numbers from the Christmas Bird Count for Kids (CB4Kids) that took place in Vermilion Provincial Park on Dec. 19 that Wasylik also coordinated.

“We had seven kids and six parents come out,” said Wasylik. “It was a long walk, 3.5 km, but I think they had fun,” she added.

Some of the birds spotted during the CBC4Kids included Black-capped Chickadees, Bohemian Wa x wings, Common Redpolls, Common Ravens,

and Black-billed Magpies, which are the types of birds you would expect to see this time of year.

In the regular bird count, Wasylik said there were some unusual sightings in the area including Black-backed Woodpecker, Eurasian-collared Dove, Cooper’s Hawk, and Northern SawWhet Owl. The species spotted and the birds counted will be added to the Bird Studies Canada database to determine the distribution and abundance of wintering birds in Canada said Wasylik.

Wasylik has been involved in the Christmas Bird Count for the past seven years and added it is a great way to connect with other birders. She is already looking forward to coordinating next year’s Kids Bird Count.

The weather cooperated for the Myrnam Fair that was held on July 18, 2015. Parade Marshal Nestor Saskiw said, “The fair started out as a bingo back in 1974 and once the arena was built in 1974 it got bigger.” The fair included a parade, children’s and family activities such as a children’s tractor pull, pony rides, bean bag toss, show and shine, silent auction, supper and a beer tent.

The rush of the holiday season is pretty much complete, and we will all be settling back into the normal routines of our daily

lives.

Each year for New Year’s people everywhere make New Year resolutions with the hopes of changing an aspect of their lives for the better. Whether it be to quit smoking, become more healthy, improve their finances and get debts paid off or fall in love.

This year, I decided I wasn’t going to make a resolution. I am going to live each day with optimism, surround myself with things that make me happy and focus on

growing my career.

I look at New Year’s Resolutions as a step towards personal failure. You set your goals and for whatever reason you don’t succeed it gives you the opportunity to beat yourself up over nothing really. Researchers have compiled statistics on the success rate of New Year’s resolutions, and the numbers are a little surprising. On average only eight per cent of people who make a resolution succeed, according to www. forbes.com.

You may be sitting there asking yourself why the numbers are so incredibly low, well the answers are pretty simple. The three main reasons why we fail at our New Year’s resolution are: First, we make our lists too long. We decide, I am going to do this and this and

this, this year, and we are doomed to fail in, at least, half of them.

Secondly, we don’t make our resolutions tangible. It’s easy enough to say I am going to lose weight this year, but if you don’t set goals that are attainable, how will you ever reach them? When setting a goal such as losing weight or saving more money, you have to make the goal within the limits of possibility. For example, if your goal is to lose 20 pounds, don’t go on a starvation diet the day after New Year’s and expect to lose those 20 pounds in a week or a month. Make your goal to lose a pound maybe two a week. Unrealistic goals are the recipe for disaster. Humans are known to try to be overachievers, and if you set your goals beyond the limits of possibility then, of course, we are going to

fail.

Thirdly, negativity, guilt and lack of support; these three words can be the ultimate deal breaker. Imagine trying your best to lose weight or quit smoking and everyone around you is just sitting there waiting for you to fail. Do you think you are going to succeed? Absolutely not! Are you going to beat yourself up if you happen to fall off the wagon a couple of times? Chances are, that’s a yes. Without support from family and friends, you are doomed from the start.

The thing is we all want to make our lives better and for the people around us that we care about. We have to set realistic goals.

We have to support the people around us who are trying their best to stay true to their resolution, and above all else if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.

Who Gives A Hoot (August 3 Issue)

A Great Horned Owl found himself in an unforseen dilemma on July 30. It was impaled on a barbwire fence and luckily passerbys cared for him and rescued him from his sticky situation. The Great Horned Owl, nicknamed “Olaf” by Vermilion Voice staff, was brought to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Society of Edmonton where he is still recovering from his experience. Dr. Tim Goodbrand of the Vermilion Veterinarian Clinic removed a piece of barbed wire from the Great Horned Owl’s wing on July 30.

Biggest Parade in 109 Years (July 27 Issue)

The parade for the 2015 Vermilion Fair was the biggest thus far with 145 entries compared to the 123 entries in 2014. The Zoo won first place in the decorated car category highlighting the theme of the fair, Local Roots and Cowboy Boots.

Here is hoping everyone had a safe and enjoyable Christmas. I certainly did. We spent Christmas at our eldest daughter Shawna’s home - my Christmas present slept snuggled between Roxanne and me on Christmas morning.

That was of course Missy Oohohh my puppy, and I was happy and content with that little bundle of joy, but then I made out like a bandit also from Santa, and got everything I wanted.

Lots of warm winter socks - can never have too many of them; lots of fresh peanuts -my favourite; couple awesome movies and a half dozen of the big cans of Tim Hortons coffee. I was in my glory.

Then, Santa / Roxanne even surprised me with another awesome gift, a set of modern hybrid snowshoes. Not only did I have the perfect snow puppy, but also snowshoes to walk and explore with that puppy in that snow. The hybrid is a slight cross between traditional and modern snowshoes.

So, I was a “happy pappy” - all that and the aroma of a huge turkey bird sizzling to a golden perfection in the oven to boot; another great and enjoyable memory with my family.

Other than my teenage grandson with the patience of my wife, trying to wake us up at 1:30 in the a.m. and successfully doing that at 4:30 in the a.m., it was very

Take a deep breath, exhale long and slow, then, begin. The theme is your own to determine. There are no prompts or suggested first strokes; the year is new and, at least in your imagination, so are you.

Yesterday, I scribbled a few notes. For the record, I am a chronic scribbler. Even if what I write down seems like a lot of nonsense when I read it later, I scribble out ideas in the moment they occur to me.

This is my scribble content: You smell of what you mostly eat You sound like the song you most sing You act on what you most believe You are everything you aspire to be.

In the background, the radio plays on. Not the Bose radio with the sound quality of a private concert, the crappy little radio that sat for years on top of the refrigerator at my parents‘ house.

For some people a new year signifies new beginnings, others choose to see it as just another day. A new year can be viewed as a clean slate, ready for the events of the upcoming year to be recorded on. For those people that are reflective and introspective the beginning of a new year is an exciting time of examining the possibilities of what one hopes to accomplish in the upcoming year. This can take many forms, including the New Year’s resolution list, business plans, bucket lists, life plans or skill and education plans.

I ate turkey for days. Once all the leftover fixings were gone, it was fresh buns, mayonnaise and turkey sandwiches.

Then, once near the carcass of the bird, my wife made a huge pot of her famous turkey soup; so I even got to freeze a little for later.

The snowshoes are made in Canada.

The frame is made out of traditional strong hardwood, the internal completely modern technology - the best of both worlds. They are lightweight, more comfortable and manoeuvrable, yet super strong.

I was excited to see these and have been threatening to purchase a pair on my own, but now Santa knew I must have been a good boy, being old school all I ever used was the traditional style snowshoes.

I have several styles and makes, some made from leather, sinew and wood, others pure lightweight metal like magnesium from old military surplus. My favourites were the tear drop or “Huron” Native style.

These new shoes, without the long tail on back, are compact and designed to travel. The almost too big snowshoes, used when rusty can be a struggle, as I described in some of my older columns.

I can still picture what I must have looked like with my head and top half of body buried upside down in three feet of snow, and the two bottoms of snowshoes kicking or walking in nothing but air. I do remember very well what the inside of that snowdrift looked like.

I’m going to practise now, in the little snow we have, and be prepared for the big snow when it comes, and also train Miss Oohohh not to be too close when I take a nose dive...stay tuned, this should be an adventure.

Some of favourite winter friends arrived; my Snowy Owls are back and are perched on the same telephone pole as every year. I look forward to seeing the big male/female pair every year.

I don’t have names for them yet, I just call them “pretty girl”, and “big boy”…wait, I just realized those are names. I guess that means they are closer friends than I thought.

I have another friend called “Wilma” that I am seeing more often. The other day I was working at my work bench in the shop and I kept hearing a “beep” sound.

I looked around for the electronic device that was the source.

I was looking on a shelf when Wilma stuck her head out and “eeped” at me; it was Wilma, a long tailed weasel in her winter whites, pure white with little beady black eyes and nose.

She will listen to me talk to her, but she has a short attention span and has to be off doing what she does best. She is probably a better mouser than all the farm kitties we have combined.

I leave her food out as she likes a feed of dog food. The last time I saw her was in the summer in her summer golden brown colour. I see her now everyday so it looks like I have another friend to talk to this winter.

The Canvas Is Blank

The radio that‘s fussy about the angle and direction it faces. The one whose volume button, if fiddled with, protests w i t h te n s e c o n d s of s t at i c b efo r e returning to regular programming. I‘m listening to that while surfing the Internet. And playing Scrabble on my iPad. I like to think I‘m unbeatable.

Winter is a good time to clear your mind, at least that‘s what I find. And once c lear, I c an begin again. I‘m ready for the next session. 2015‘s a wrap. Teach me something I‘ve never tried to learn. Show me something I‘ve never seen before. Introduce me to someone I‘ve never heard of. But there‘s one catch: keep the vitriol to yourself. My canvas----and my freshly cleared mind----is particularly sensitive at the beginning of a new year. In the beginning, I yearn for knowledge of the positive kind. Bad news is far too seductive, far too easy to find.

A few good and interesting things I heard on radio or read about so far?

Well, how about the Calgary art exhibit inviting visitors to literally walk awhile in someone else‘s shoes, to learn the

story of the stranger who owns those shoes, and afterward meet and talk with that person? The project‘s goal is to encourage people to empathize with those whose circumstances differ from our own.

Then there‘s the project in Lyon, France wherein a college student and an elder are matched and become roommates in a mutually beneficial arrangement. The college student receives free rent and food while the elder remains in his or her own home enjoying the company of another human being. Not surprisingly, some interesting friendships have been developing.

within and find your most authentic self. It is a time to be limitless. Sometimes it’s hard to feel limitless when limits are so clearly all around. Some people look for limits and they will surely find them. They will point them out, and shine a bright light on them to illuminate them, finding safety and comfor t in choosing limits. O thers learn to jump over every limit that is thrust in their way.

This year in Alber ta, the extreme drop in oil prices has meant unde sirable limits pressing in. There is hardship for many people that have lost their jobs. A job loss can impact a per son to their c ore, be c ause it touches so many levels of a person’s identity and sense of worth. It can feel ver y limiting, stressful and oppres-

sive. Such times are difficult, but out of the ashes of adversity, will rise up, stronger and more determined individuals, families, communities and businesses. Like most other people, I have experienced many difficult times, and I have learned valuable lessons from them. I can honestly say that I have never enjoyed dif ficult times, but I have appreciated the nuggets of wisdom and strength that these experiences have left with me.

I have found that, the good thing about bad times is that they don’t last.

I remember reading the following proverb during a particularly taxing time: “he who sits on the pins of adversity rises up to do great things”. I found these words a bit humorous and so tremendously encouraging that I

The Missy Oohohh Chronicles Just before Christmas, Roxanne got Missy Oohohh a custom dog tag in the shape of a heart with all her info, name and phone number. After close inspection it had Missy Oohohh engraved on one side and Miss Puddles engraved on the other. What was she trying to say?

So, just after Christmas, it was time for Missy Oohohh to meet Dr. Judy and staff at the V-E-T office. We got her booster shots and a close check-up, and for Roxanne’s information Missy Oohohh’s water intake and outlet, or “leak” is normal.

Seems we have another turkey addict in the family. Missy Oohohh loves turkey, also and I have to share; a word of caution though, a turkey fed puppy will get the “turkey trots” which involves another leak in the form of “gas”. Now this gas leak will turn you green on contact. I am sure they should have a puppy eating a turkey sign with a red circle and line thru it on highways, because it is certainly a driver distraction trying to drive with your eyes watering and windows wide open at 20 below.

My canvas, like yours, is blank. I‘m not much of a resolution maker but I can commit to this: I want quality in my life. I want to be most influenced by positive, uplifting events and people.

It‘s not that I can remain oblivious to the miser y that ver y clearly exists, I just choose to fill my canvas more prevalently with knowledge of events or acts that encourage and inspire and less with those that repel or repulse.

We become what we most frequently practice.

In the old days of hard travel and real live trees that were so very nice smelling, families still managed to get together over a really special meal, and all even dressed up to celebrate that special birth.

Now, in the days of everything so plentiful and travel so easy, cell smart phones and all related communications, there seem to be an awful lot of really lonely people, trying to cope with the season when they can’t live up to the expectations. I know the feeling!! Now that things like travel and communication are easy it seems like no real effort is afforded to the deal now, it isn’t really something to strive for!! Easy-come, easy-go!!

I heard a song sung by an old country artist this year for the first time. I guess the song has been around for awhile, but just heard it now. It tells the story of the first Christmas eve, when there were no decorations or flashing lights. Not even any Christmas trees or presents from all

the shopping malls, just that one big star that guided the wise men on their way.

I was so touched by the lyrics and the sincerity, that I came away with a whole new meaning for the special day!!

What would folks do, do you think, if the focus was on His birth and not on the glamour and hoopla that has risen instead and turned the day into a commercial enterprise that is started before Halloween is really over? Seems to me it’s more and more a commercial occasion and less focus on family.

Maybe us older folks remember back to the older days and notice the difference more keenly. I can remember when it wasn’t an issue to make the birthday of Christ the focus of the celebration. Try it now and someone is bound to call you a racist or a bigot!!

It makes me a tad upset to refer to Christmas as “Happy Holiday”, or such like. Why is it a happy holiday? Do you really know or care!? I guess as the old traditions are slowly eroded away, the new deal is, I think, slowly being focused on something other than family and the birth of a saviour.

“What are you talking about, and who cares?” As the world is falling, I believe, into chaos. It seems to me the further we get from this faith, the worse the troubles seem to be. We desperately need to find a focus for our new generations on the family values we old folks used for a measuring stick. Those values will be replaced by what? I’d like to know where we’ll turn for help in the new way or value set.

I cringe when the emphasis for our Christmas is placed on “Santa Claus”, and gifts etc. Just like “Peter Rabbit” for Easter – we need to give our heads a shake and realize our civilization was formed on those ideals, and if they aren’t followed, what then?

There is another Christmas carol named, “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day”. Anyone who hears that song, and listens closely to the words can relate to my thinking. The song goes, we hear the bells tell of peace on earth, but in despair we see there is no peace on earth, so maybe God is dead, and hate is strong, but we must believe that God is alive and will prevail over the evil that is coming on

us so strongly. Yes we need Christmas and the message of Peace and God will too triumph. Wow!!

Bring on the good stuff and celebrate any way we think fitting. Let’s not let the world’s trouble seem insurmountable.

In my childhood time, the mail days were the main way to communicate and we still had a way to get word of get togethers and parties. It’s been so long since I’ve had anything like the meals my wonderful Mom worked so long and hard to prepare. Like the mince-meat for the pies was made weeks before so it could properly age.

I remember the Christmas pudding and the special sauce - We alternated goose with turkey. Dad’s German Heritage said goose, and Mom’s was turkey – well anyway, I guess we have memories of our childhood times and customs, and I hope our kids have absorbed enough to carry on the traditions that we found so dear.

So, in this troubled world, let’s all cling to these memories and hope we can somehow use them to help us through the hard times that seem to be threatening.

Walking Through Grief Submitted

For most who have experienced a loss they are more apt to be looking back rather than to the future, with all the firsts they will have to face. Life losses forever change people and the search is on for what a “new normal” is and a “new beginning” will look like for them. This time will be embraced with fears and emotions of the new journey and will be felt for some time with less intensity as years go on.

Life losses such as death, divorce, diagnosis of or declining health, job or pet loss have all changed people’s lives to a greater or lesser degree of grief response. Grief’s journey not only affects the grieving person but friends, family and community.

There are factors that effect the Grief Journey: • The nature of the loss • Circumstances surrounding the death • Circumstances surrounding the support system • The unique personality of the person

Beginnings 2016

grieving • The unique personality of the person who died • The cultural background • Other crisis or stressors in your life • The biological sex of those grieving • Ritual and funeral experience.

It is impor tant to understand the griever’s unique journey, complexity and length.

These factors are taken from Dr. Alan Wolfelt’s book Understand Your Grief.

Self care is important on this journey, taking care of the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual and reaching out to a trusted friend, support group or counsellor is the first step on the healing journey.

Children who have experienced a loss in their lives also face all the emotion, fears, sadness and loss of structure and security that adults face. They seek a safe, secure placed to process their grief, also,for their lives have been forever changed, too. Their comprehension and ability to express are more limited than that of an adult so they need an outlet to express their pain.

Walking Through Grief Society will be launching a Children Support program on Feb. 1, 2016 and Feb 2, 2016. “Hope After Loss - Audra’s Legacy”.

This program is for 10 weeks and will be an ongoing program. The topics will be Death, Loss and Grief, Feelings, Fears, Guilt and Regrets, Memories, Healing Self Care and Support, Rituals and Special Days and Saying Good-bye to the group.

The program will be offered in Lloydminster and Vermilion.

Lloydminster: Feb. 1 to April 11, 2016 from 6:30 - 8 p.m. Parent/caregiver must be present from 7:30 - 8 p.m. Sessions will be held at the Mid West Outreach Center at 5009 - 57st. Snacks will be provided.

Vermilion in partnership with VIBE Feb. 2nd to April 5th, 2016 from 4 p.m.

- 5:30 Parent/caregiver must be present from 5 p.m. to 5:30. Sessions will be held at J.R. Robson High School Snack provided.

Registration for both Lloydminster and Vermilion is $ 20 for a family. Registration deadline January 28th, 2016.

Space is limited.

Students in Outdoor Education 7 with Mrs. McCullough enjoyed playing a cooperative outdoor game which involved their line leader (the only one not blindfolded), directing their team through snowy terrain to their target.

Leaders were not allowed to use words, just a series of shoulder taps, while the rest of the team was blindfolded and had to feel the directions of the group in order to drop their rubber chicken, fish or penguin into a bucket across the playing field.

The Grade 1’s just finished up their Interactive Sight Word Books. The students have been working very hard on their short vowel sounds. They have now covered all of the short vowels and will be working on long vowels. The Grade 1’s will also start the Accelerated Reading Program in January.

Our Grade 2’s are finishing up their addition and subtraction unit. Students have been learning a bunch of strategies to help solve problems. They can use number lines, double facts, counters, pictures and making ten to help them

solve the problems. They are now going they will be shifting their focus to patterns. be given the opportunity to enjoy a wide to start the unit on measurement.

Grade 5’s are wrapping up their addition and subtraction of decimals and estimation unit. The next unit will be multiplication and division of large numbers and they will be starting that unit by practicing basic multiplication. It is very important that the students have their basic facts mastered in order to be successful with larger multiplication and division.

Taking A Bite Out Of Invasive Species (August 10 Issue)

Two of three dogs trained in the province of Alberta to sniff out mussel-fouled boats during mandatory inspections were “working” the Vermilion weigh station inspection site on July 31.

A black Labrador retriever cross named Hilo and a German shepherd named Suess are rescue dogs that were trained at the California Department of Fish and Wildlife by a non-profit organization called Working Dogs for Conservation in partnership with the state of Montana and the province of Alberta.

ATCO Donation To Habitat House (October 5 Issue)

ATCO donated the cost of the natural gas service line installation at the Habitat for Humanity House on Sept. 31, as well as a brand new BBQ for the new homeowners, Brandy Robertson and her two children, 4-year-old Ezaelia Lindsay and 7-year-old Entasia Robertson. Fall Book Sale (October 12 Issue)

There were 36 people in the first 20 minutes after the doors opened at this year’s Vermilion Public Library book sale on October 6.

“The funds raised go back into the maintenance of the library and towards the purchase of more books. We usually have a book sale twice a year, one in the fall and one in the spring,” said Program Coordinator of the Vermilion Public Library, Michele Scott.

The nominees chosen for awards by the Vermilion and District Chamber of Commerce were from left, Candice Anderson from Lakeland Funeral Home winning the Spirit of Vermilion award, Jenniffer Howard from Nick’s Family Restaurant was chosen for the Employee of the Year award, Len Swan from Lens Party Bus won the Business of the Year award, Tannis Henderson from Elevation took the Rookie business of the Year award, Kevin Ford, Morgan Ferguson and Megan West from The Brick won the President’s Choice award. VES Scares Hunger (November 2 Issue)

It took two trucks to deliver all of the food to the Vermilion Food Bank that was collected by the students at VES and Webb’s Ford dealership during their first Halloween We Scare Hunger food drive. Ford partnered with Free the Children’s We Scare Hunger food drive last year, and it has quickly become one of the biggest food drives in Canada.

The 3 Cities 4-H multi club has 40+ members this year. Most of these members are junior and cleaver age groups. This year the projects in the club include beef, light horse, outdoor, canine and crafts.

So far this year the beef project has weighed their animals and built halters for them. They have also completed their tack box for shows and Lloydminster 4-H expo show and sale in June.

general health of their animals and on December 29 had a tour of Diamond 7 meats and went swimming. The beef project is collecting Ivomec boxes as a 4-H fundraiser. Please contact beef leader Gail Verleysen at (780)853 0810 for more info or to donate.

This year the light horse project has 27 members who are excited to start riding The outdoor project meets twice every month and have already learned how to light fires with a flint and steel and how to build bird houses. They have built these bird houses to go up at the local golf course. They are also working at making walking sticks that

will be sold later in the year as a fundraiser.

The canine project has been working on obedience health and safety with their dogs. On November 15 guest speaker Jackie Tomyer came and taught the members about grooming; and the project also recently did a tour of Weirs Animal hospital in Lloydminster. The canine project has also built an A frame to help with training their dogs agility.

As we enter the new year we are excited to continue our 4 -h events a n d p l a n s . We a l s o wo u l d l i ke to thank everyone who helps support our program.

National Child Day (November 23 Issue)

The Vermilion and Area Early Childhood Coalition hosted a Children’s Fair at the Lakeland College gym on Nov. 21 to celebrate National Childs Day (Nov. 20). Early Childhood Coordinator, Amanda Sargeant said the event brought together groups like the Vermilion Public Library, Vermilion Fire and Rescue, MidWest Family Connections, Alberta Health Services, Be Fit for Life, VIBE and Vermilion Play Development in order to highlight the importance of activities and games in children’s development. “It was a great turnout,” said Sargeant. From left, 6-year-old Kimberly, 4-year-old Kamila, and 3-year-old Kelly Garcia enjoyed one of the many activities set up in the gym.

The Mitten Tree (November 30 Issue)

“We have been doing The Mitten Tree for the last five years now,” said Library Coordinator Michele Scott. “We’ve had volunteers this year that knitted hats, scarves and gloves for the local Santa’s Anonymous. This has been one of our best years. There are a few items that have been store bought but almost everything has been hand knitted this year.”

All of the items on The Mitten Tree were donated to Santa’s Anonymous.

The Goodbye Game (December 7 Issue)

It was difficult for the Cusack family to say and hear the word “final” at what was the last Chris Cusack Memorial Game that took place in the Vermilion Stadium on Dec. 5.

“It has kept Chris’s memory alive, “said Chris’s mom, Lois Cusack.

Vermilion-Lloydminster MLA Dr. Richard Starke hosted a Town Hall meeting that over 300 people attended at the Seniors’ Centre on Dec. 5.

During an open mic discussion close to 20 people publically shared their concerns, frustrations and fears about how Bill 6 could potentially affect their individual farms, lives and livelihoods.

Vermilion’s Eastalta Co-op was a hub of action and excitement for three minutes as Marjorie Lawrence and her grandson John Snider raced around the grocery store trying to fill up as many shopping carts as possible.

“This is the 10th annual Knights of Columbus Co-op Shopping Spree that we’ve had now. We alternate between McDonald’s Family Foods and the Co-op, so next year it will be at McDonald’s Family Foods,” said Coordinator of the Shopping Spree raffle Larry Bingham.

The Knights of Columbus said that they will use the net profit from the raffle to contribute back to community groups. One hundred dollars of food from the prize winnings was donated to the Vermilion Food Bank.

“It was good fun; I was surprised at how quickly the trolley added up to $1000. I thought we would be under,” said participant John Snider.
