Biggest Year For Ron Moses Christmas Community Dinner.

The doors were held wide open by young volunteers for people who attended the 20th Ron Moses Christmas Community Dinner that took place at the Seniors’ Centre on Christmas Day. It i s we ll - k n ow n t hat t he d inner provides a gathering place for people who may find themselves alone on Christmas Day. This year 177 people were ser ved at the Seniors’ Centre w h i l e 5 8 m e a l s were d e l i vere d i n Vermilion and area said organizer Lynda Moses.
“That’s 235 meals in total. That’s 23 more than last year,” added Moses. “This is our biggest year ever.” People came from as far away as Calgary and Grand Prairie. Twentythree-year old Asia Smar t from Saskatc hewan s ai d she has been attending the dinner for the past five years with her dad, Jacob Smart from Mannville. “Lynda Moses is an amazing woman,” said Smart. “The food is always good, and every year I come, I always meet someone new,” she added. Moses said it couldn’t happen with-

out the help of all the dedicated volunteers and just before the buffet dinner was served, Moses asked the volunteers who were present to come out of the kitchen to be recognized for their efforts. The Community Christmas Dinner originally started with Lynda and her husband Ron Moses in 1996 and Lynda kept it going when Ron passed away in 2005. Inc lud ed in this year ’s fare was turkey, ham, meatballs, moose and lots of vegetables, salads and desserts, including a variet y of foods and
desser ts that were gluten-free and diabetic friendly. Emily And er son re c ite d a p o em about Jesus, while a variety of musicians took to the stage to sing carols, and play Christmas music before and during the meal and attendees even joined in on a couple of Christmas carols led by Harold Pullyblank. Thanks to the Ron Moses Communit y Christmas dinner, no one has to be alone on Christmas Day.

Everything has changed for the Warren family since their thirteen-month-old son, Bently was diagnosed with Stage 3 Subglottic Stenosis one month ago. Bently’s Stage 3 Subglottic Stenosis is congenital and causes his airway to be 75 per cent restricted and it is a rare and life threatening condition. “Ever since we found out, we’ve been going to the Stollery weekly,” said his mom Jennifer Warren. “It has really put a fear in us because Bently has had so many incidences where he is really struggling.” The Warren family live in Clandonald and the closest hospitals are in Vermilion and Lloydminster. “The Vermilion Hospital has made sure they have the right size intubation tube on hand should the need arise and the ambulance drivers know about Bently and have one on hand as well.” During Bently’s last visit to the Stollery he was put on a steroid to help his breathing as he wasn’t feeling well. “He’s in a danger zone right now, for colds and viruses,” added Jennifer. A cold or virus could potentially close Bently’s airway completely. Even going out in public with him makes Jennifer nervous. “He can’t get to the point where he is coughing even a little bit,” she said.

“I kind of gave up on Christmas this year,” said Jennifer Warren one day after returning from 13-month-old son Bently’s latest appointment at the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton on Dec. 21. But when the Warren family returned to their house in Clandonald, it had been decorated to the hilt, complete with Christmas presents under the tree. “Our friends came and took over and did everything for us,” said Jennifer. The Warren’s 13-month-old son Bently was diagnosed with Stage 3 Congenital Subglottic Stenosis, a rare and lifethreatening condition, that requires constant monitoring, countless appointments, frequent trips to Edmonton, and an upcoming trip to the Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children. In order to assist the family with some of the costs associated with Bently’s treatments, Sydney Stewart, Kamryn Zayac, Kylie Stepanick and Emilee Hansen, friends of Bently’s nine-year-old sister Hailey, recently held a fundraiser for Bently that raised $1,103.45 through a raffle and gift wrapping services they offered at Lakeland Mall. Sydney Stewart said they wanted to help the family. At the moment, another $2,770 has been raised through a Facebook account that is linked to a Go Fund Me page called Support for Bently that was started by

“We try to keep people away,” said Bently’s nine-year-old sister Hailey, who has assumed the protective older sister role with a vengeance. Although she said she wouldn’t call herself an expert, she has gained quite a bit of medical knowledge about her brother’s condition just by listening. “My friends ask me a lot of questions,” said Hailey. Bently requires reconstructive surgery where two grafts from one of his ribs will be placed on either side of his airway. “The surgery and recovery process is quite lengthy; he would have to be sedated for about a week afterward and basically try to get it to heal a bit,” Jennifer said. “Because Bently’s condition is so rare, the doctor at the Stollery said he has only seen three cases like Bently’s in the last 30 years.” The Warren’s are presently awaiting a referral to the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children. “SickKids in Toronto knows about him, so they’re keeping in contact with us about how he is doing. The doctor there talked to us on the phone for an hour and a half, which is pretty incredible.” The Hospital for Sick Children is working with Alberta Health Services to get some funding approval, however, there’s a lot of red tape to deal with, but they’re trying to speed it up said Jennifer.
The Warrens are also talking to the hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. “They do three times more airway reconstructive surgery than anywhere else in the world. That’s where I would like Bently to be. It’s not just a simple procedure, so his chances are better down there. But it’s a risk anywhere we go.” Bently will have to be monitored closely
for infections for three to five years following the surgery to ensure the grafts are bonding well, and even after surgery Bently’s airway will still be what is considered Stage One. “Wherever we go, we want to make sure it’s the right place,” said Jennifer. Until then, “He doesn’t leave my side.”

one of the Warren’s neighbour’s, Bonnie Martin who said on the account: “I have watched his family struggle during this difficult time... Bently always has a smile on his face. He is a happy baby who is getting sicker as he gets older. Please support his parents as it is difficult to pay for trips to the city to get Bently the help he needs. His parents have not asked for help, but I know they need it because in addition to hotels and meals in the city, Bently’s parents have both taken time off of work. Finances are especially tight as Christmas is approaching so any amount you can give this kind family would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for your prayers and support!” People outside the community have also been reaching out to help Bently. On Dec. 21 an RCMP Constable from Edson, Chad Hollinger made the fourhour drive to personally deliver a special hand sewn blanket to Bently from Angel Magnussen, a 19-year-old girl from B.C. who has had her own medical issues and frequent hospital visits during her lifetime. Angel, who has Down syndrome, runs a registered non-profit foundation called Hugginz By Angel and makes blankets for critically ill children. “She hugs them before she sends them off,” said Cst. Hollinger. This was the second blanket Hollinger has delivered and he said he is happy to do it. “I’m very big on giving back to children,” he
added. Hailey’s dance teacher “Miss Ryan” has also been helping the Warren’s out by working with the family to accommodate a schedule for Hailey so she can continue with her dance classes. “This year we can only do two a week, and that’s if we can,” said Jennifer.

An upcoming fundraiser for Bently is being held in January with a Frozen theme but all the details are not known yet said Jennifer. In addition, an account at Scotiabank has been set up in Vermilion for Bently. “We’re overwhelmed by the amount of support we’ve been receiving,” Jennifer added.

Happy New Year Everyone

Well Christmas Day has come and gone and now we are working our way into the New Year. Looking back on this last year so many things have changed. Provincially, we have switched to an NDP government, I’m not sure that was the best thing for us as a province, but it is what it is for now. Federally, the Liberals beat out the Conservatives, and while we would all like to point our finger at someone for the downturn in our economy, in particular, our new Prime Minister, I’m not quite sure that is fathomable seeing how he has only been the leader of our country for eight weeks. Let’s face it, the oil prices and
our economy have been in this downturn since last year. Canada has opened up its doors (figuratively speaking) to thousands of refugees in the hopes of giving a better life for those affected by a war-torn country. My opinion on that is still on the fence; my heart says we should help as many as we can, but in the same thought, my mind tells me our government needs to fix our problems here at home before we start spending billions of dollars on others. Meanwhile, our little town, even with the downturn, has grown over the last year with the building of a new hotel, new restaurant and other service facilities like the new 7-Eleven store and Petro Canada gas station. Even with the growth in our town we need to remember that many families have lost their employment, and I am truly hoping that 2016 will be a better year for
all affected, with new opportunities or the oil prices swinging back around. Our paper has grown, and it is with our greatest appreciation that we would like to thank everyone who worked so hard to make our paper what it is. Our columnists, who are so diligent about sending in their weekly columns, we appreciate your hard work and dedication. The submissions we get from the schools that help keep us all up to date and, of course, our advertisers. We Thank You. It is our hope that our paper continues into the new year with the success that it has seen over the last 11 years, and it is our plan to cover as many local events as possible. Your events are what make our paper what it is, so please let us know when you have an event coming up so we can make sure we are there. In 2016, we will continue working hard
to deliver a top notch newspaper that holds our community and the communities in which it serves with the utmost respect and accuracy. While I know there have been some hiccups in the past about placement of articles, names being mixed up, and other issues that are sometimes out of our control as a newspaper, we will do our best in 2016 to rectify any issues that may arise. We want and appreciate feedback from our community on how we are doing, whether it is praise or constructive criticism. The Vermilion Public Library invites you to participate in the only blizzard we hope to see this year. Our Winter Reading program will be running again from January 5 to the third week in February with the theme Blizzard of Books. Visit the library anytime starting January 5 to register, pick up your reading log and learn all the details. Keep track of your reading, and if you read for 7 hours during this time (that is only 15 minutes a day), your name goes into a draw for one of six tablets, gift cards, or other supplementary prizes. Well, here we are looking back over our past year, and thinking of all the events that are going to be our history. Surely in our past history of wars, depression and weather happenings, I wonder if any of them will prove to be worse than the events this past year have unfolded!! A l t h o u g h we h ave ex p e r i e n c e d drought in dry years, and wet weather harvests that have devastated crop in large areas, I think for the most part the most far reaching problems have been politically motivated crises’ that have caused wars and terrible hardships like the depression of 1929!! Think of the World Wars and all the other conflicts that have depleted our resources of young men and materials, not to mention the hardships on the home front as we strove to support

This is the time between. Is it the end of something, or is it the beginning? The answer is both, which is why this time merits the pause we take to acknowledge it. On the sunny, clear days of our coldest season, the days free of dangers like blinding blizzards or black ice, absent the harsh winds that threaten to shear layers of our epidermis away, not much can compare to a walk at first light across freshly fallen snow. Or to drive a secondary highway on a Tuesday afternoon when you might imagine yourself the lone traveler navigating the

the boys on the battle lines. In our time we are experiencing new challenges of wars creating refugees and terrorists that have caused such terrible chaos in most of the world. Now, our learned bureaucrats are telling us we must change our whole system of transportation and heating and lighting our homes that will be so costly and indifferent that folks will freeze in the dark. It’s time for common sense to prevail before all our civilized system is made the scapegoat of those people who would let doctrine of green cultures shut down our oil fields and coal fired power plants. It’s already been proven in other parts of Canada that we CAN’T light or heat our homes without the coal or petroleum fuels. Really would like to have a well fed and well paid bureaucrat explain how on a cold Alberta day when the stoves are empty because the trains and trucks can’t afford the fuel it takes to operate. I wonder if they will be able to talk through their chattering teeth. Of course the
powers that be make sure their tax paid salaries are maybe high enough to keep their homes warm and vehicles fueled, the rest of us have to pay for the green way of things and somehow pay those super inflated taxes. A few years back, when Alberta was celebrating its Centennial Birthday, we had Grant MacEwan as a guest at our celebration, and he spoke on how ancient history showed how the rise and fall of empires always followed the same pattern. The struggle to rise then reaching a plateau and then a calamitous fall. Are we coming to that? When the people of a strong country start to become complacent bad things seem to follow and corruption takes over, ineffective rulers, government, bureaucrats, all the same. I don’t think we are immune to the effect of the same system. It seems that too much of the world is in turmoil and in terrible debt, so how will we stand on an island in this sea of strife? In early times of history there seemed

thin ribbon of blacktop winding across a barren landscape of undulating white sparkle. Eyes on the road, hands upon the wheel...remember what Jim Morrison said. Enjoy the scenery but don’t underestimate its power to derail you with its dazzle. We linger here, in the time between, for such a brief time. It can be, for some, a disquieting and frenzied time. It can be whatever we decide, for who else but ourselves maps out the unfolding of our own lives? If the answer conjures up a vision of someone else wielding the conductor’s stick, maybe the time between is an opportune time to reflect upon that, to ensure we’re still alright with forfeiting our autonomy in favour of someone else’s agenda.
We don’t have to get all deep and reflective though. We will pass through the end of one year and step over the threshold into the beginning of a new one as easily as we do every other year, whether we make a big deal of it or not. Time has no preference as to what we do with it. Time is neutral. We are the ones who pass, not the other way around. We may choose to pass our time in oblivion or in a fully conscious state, aware of the choices we make and owning the consequences of having made those choices. We may, during this time between, decide to remain exactly the same as we have always been. We may check in and find ourselves satisfied in every way. Or, on assessment, we may instead note a list of deficiencies. We

to be some new territory that folks could run to and start a new life. Well, look around and you’ll see there is NO place like that left anywhere on Earth except maybe Antarctica or some such inhospitable place. We have to learn to merge all the different lifestyles and religions and see if we can find a way to stop the wars and the hunger and hardship that follows. So far here in Canada, we haven’t experienced our c ities bombed or shelled and for the most part sniping and murder is kind of related to drug wars and crime. Something tells me that that period of grace can be ending and though I hate to be an alarmist that hollers “The sky is falling!” and cause panic, I think we should pay more attention to the terrorists and the wars and stop the “Global Warming ”, baf fle gab and concentrate on trying to stop the senseless killing and strife that so plagues this old world. I wish us all a Happy New Year and may God save us from bureaucrats!!

All we have been and done prior to this time falls away, all footprints leading to the present moment become obscured. Where we have been still holds significance, but it’s only this moment and those to follow over which we effect any influence. This time between, like the wild landscape hushed by a blanket of sparkling fresh fallen snow, this is our shining hour. We decide where we go from here. Let’s decide now to choose wisely. Let’s step forward with the best of ourselves into the promise awaiting our arrival at the dawning of a New Year.

The holiday season sure snuck up on me quick, things to do. A big roasting turkey lingers in the air, or maybe it’s my imagination; family plans, puppy plans and, of course, there are outdoor adventures mixed in there somewhere. There are three lakes I want to ice fish this winter; one has Rainbow trout, another Brook trout and the final has a trout I may not have caught yet. I thought I had the grand slam on all fish in Alberta. This trout is called the Tiger trout…a colourful trout with a red belly and tiger looking stripes on its sides, a real scrapper, and it’s not hard to see why as they are a hybrid between the Brown and Brook trout. Both of these trout can be ravenous feeders, since they are a hybrid they are sterile, so introduced into lakes with unwanted species of fish they can clean or control a lake with invasive species. I am looking forward to catching, at least, one of these Tiger trout, and will keep you updated on that adventure. Of course, ice conditions still demand caution all over Alberta, but colder weather recently is improving the ice thickness greatly. I got all my winter outdoor bird feeders up. My Chickadees are fat and fluffy, and enjoy the suet based seed blocks we put out just for them; don’t forget your fine feathered friends this Christmas.

Whether you are hosting a New Year’s celebration or attending one, this cheese ball is the perfect party appetizer. There is no need to buy a premade cheese ball for your holiday New Year’s party, when this one is so quick and easy to make. The combination of bacon and cheese is sure to make this a party favourite. I have also included my recipe for home made crackers, to go with the cheese ball. When making crackers keep an eye on them in the oven, as they are thin and are cooked at a high temperature, therefore they can quickly burn. These crackers can be stored in an air tight container for up to a week. They are fantastic served warm or cold with jam. They are also a great accompaniment to tea

Winter in Canada offers such a vast itinerary of outdoor adventures, there are a lot of things to do outdoors, and if you’re dressed for it, one can be very comfortable in any weather. Now anyone that is bored, I highly suggest getting a winter puppy - guaranteed lots of exercise and fresh air. The giggles and smiles are a big bonus. That brings me to… “The Missy Oohohh Chronicles” Well, I am certainly getting my exercise and share of the outdoors; my new little bundle of joy has two speeds…”go and nap”, with “go” being the preference. Since my last column, Missy Oohohh has changed considerably, growing like a weed…growing in body, feet, personality and looks. Last Monday as I took Missy Oohohh for her walk at sunrise she still had her “broken ears.” Now “broken ears” is the term Roxanne uses for those floppy rabbit ears that puppies have. Well, by noon those ears were straight up and perfect. Now with her ears up and her tail at a full curl, she walks with a proud stride. It would appear that the “Ear Fairy” had a visit out of the blue, and Roxanne is quite upset at the ear fairy as she loves “broken ears.” Missy Oohohh now looks like show class and could strut the walkway of any beauty pageant. Of course, that really means nothing to me, she is my buddy. As we walk the trails of the north forty she no longer follows in

when buttered and topped with a slice of cheese and then a slice of tomato and a bit of chopped parsley. This recipe uses unbleached flour, but once you get the timing and cracker thickness just right you can create artisan crackers by using different flours, herbs, spices or adding 1/4 cup parmesan cheese. The best thing about making your own cheese ball and crackers is that there are no food additives, chemicals or preservatives; just homemade natural food. I wish you all have a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year. Bacon Cheese Ball 1 package of cream cheese at room temperature 1 1/2 cups grated sharp or aged cheddar cheese 6 slices of bacon 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 1/4 teaspoon hot pepper sauce like Franks Red Hot
1 teaspoon onion powder 1/2 cup chopped walnuts C o o k t h e b a c o n u n t i l c r i s p. A n easy no fuss way to cook the bacon is to cover a cookie sheet with tin foil, place the strips on the foil and bake at 400 degrees until crispy. When the bacon is cooked and slightly cooled chop it into small pieces. I stack all the cooked bacon slices and then cut the bacon into small slices. Combine the softened cream cheese, the graded cheddar cheese, the chopped bacon, the Worcestershire sauce, the pepper sauce, the onion powder and the salt. Mix until all the ingredients are well distributed. Form the mass into a ball with your hands. Spread the walnuts on a cutting board, and roll the ball in the nuts. This can be wrapped in plastic wrap and stored in the refrigerator. It can be used right away or even popped into the oven, in an oven safe dish, to

serve warm and soft. Cream Crackers 3 cups flour 1/3 cup butter 1 cup milk 1/2 teaspoons salt. 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning In a bowl combine the flour, butter and the salt. Rub the butter into the flour. Add the milk and combine to form stiff dough. Divide the dough into two batches and roll out thinly in a lightly floured surface. Sprinkle the flat dough lightly with salt. Cut the dough into squares and place on a lightly buttered or oiled cookie sheet. Using a fork, prick each cracker three or four times. Bake at 400 degrees for 10 minutes until lightly browned. You may have to adjust the time to suit your oven. Enjoy warm or cold. Allow to completely cool before storing. Yields three cookie sheets of crackers.

my every footstep…she now leads the way. She is full of adventure and has to stop to smell and taste everything. I think she would make one heck of a mouser, as she does that fox pounce and nose dive into the snow so well. That antic has caused me to laugh out loud several times, as I will turn around for a second, turn back and think she is gone or out of sight. Then I see her butt and tail sticking out of the snow, her head totally buried in the snow like an Ostrich with its head in the sand. We bought Missy Oohohh a fleece neck warmer in Christmas red and white complete with jingle bells. The jingle bells sound so seasonal, and is also training for the harness in the dog sled that also have jingle bells on them. She is a true outdoor dog and loves the cold and snow. As an Alaskan malamute she is a true freight sled dog, with a dense warm coat to hold the heat in, and big webbed snowshoe feet. Also, they have a unique arrangement of blood vessels in their legs to help protect against frostbite allowing them to leven lie on ice without freezing. So, if you think one of these pups will get cold on a walk, I’m betting you will first. So, I dress in thick Thinsulate insulated coveralls, fleece neck warmer and gloves, a “mad trapper” insulated hat and 100 below boots, and we are both warm and comfortable. In fact, with our fireplace in the house, she will want out just to lay in the snow for long periods. I am also

Vermilion Triplets Celebrate 70th Birthday (March 9 Issue)
Vermilion Born triplets Jim Teasdale, Robert Teasdale and Glen Teasdale celebrated their 70th Birthday on Sunday, March 8 in Sherwood Park. The triplets were born on March 9, 1945 and were the fifth set of triplets born in Vermilion, but the first set to survive. MLA Starke Reflects On Change In 2015

With huge political change this past year in local politics for Alberta and nationally for Canada; MLA Dr. Richard Starke says that he has been tackling the role of the opposition since his re-election in May. The election of a new NDP government in Alberta and the voting in of a new Liberal government for Canada was driven by a desire for change. “In the May 5 election, the people spoke and the voters are never wrong. They voted in a new government and they are now seeing that government act on its agenda. For me, personally, I am very grateful for the support I have received locally here in our constituency. “Since May 5 I have been tackling the
role of being a member of the opposition. In our parliamentary system the opposition has an extremely important role. We have accepted that role,” said Starke. “It was a change certainly being in opposition while at the same time providing a voice for Albertans. “The NDP approach on Bill 6 has been very disappointing; by their unwillingness to be responsive to the very clear objections that were voiced by Albertans and by opposition members after we put forth eight very reasonable amendments. “They were amendments that I think would have brought sufficient change to the bill, and were amendments that basically came from the people but the government rejected every single one of those amendments. That to me does not represent a government that is prepared
to listen to the people.” MLA Starke believes that the people who voted NDP and wanted change, change is now what they are getting. On reflection of the election of the new Prime Minister, MLA Starke said he was surprised that Mr Trudeau gained a majority. “Nationally Trudeau was elected by a desire for change. “I am glad that they have adopted a more realistic time table with regards to admission of the refugees from Syria. “I am concerned that there are already signs that the deficit in his budget is going to be larger than he indicated during the election campaign. He is moving forward on what he said. “I think 2016 could end up being a very difficult year for Alberta and Albertans. We know that there is no real indication

that oil prices are going to rebound sufficiently during the course of 2016 and we know that they have fallen now below $40 per barrel. “I encourage Albertans to be resilient, as they always have been, but certainly there is cause for concern. I talk to people every day who have lost employment and there is a great deal of concern out there.” Starke said that he believes that some of the decisions being made by the new provincial government are making the situation worse. MLA Starke said he foresees 2016 to be a challenging year for Albertans. But added there are other areas of the economy where Alberta has tremendous potential for growth such as the Agriculture, Forestry and Tourism industries.
