Christmas Spirit Comes Alive At Lakeland Mall

Whether you were looking to help support a worthy cause, make your own decorative Christmas planters or just sit on Santa’s knee and have your picture taken, Lakeland Mall was the place to be this past weekend to soak in all of the good cheer and good deeds the holiday season has to offer.

A group of dancers from SHAPE Art and Wellness Studio participated in a fundraiser for Bently Warren who has Stage 3 Subglottic Stenosis, a rare and life threatening condition that will require reconstructive surgery to open up his airway. Bently is the brother of Hailey Warren, who the girls danced with last year. The money will go toward travelling and housing costs associated with the Warren family’s countless trips to the hospital in Edmonton. The family is also awaiting further consultation and a referral to the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. “ We wanted to do this to help the family,” said Sydney Stewart.

The group of girls went to businesses in Vermilion and asked for item donations to include in a raffle and also offered gift wrapping services at the mall on Dec. 11 and 12. The girls raised $1,103.45, which will be added to the total of $1,820 already raised through a “Support For Bently” Go Fund Me page.

Another group of dedicated young people, the Rotary Interact Club, had a bake sale on Dec. 12 to raise money for the Vermilion Food Bank. The group managed to raise a total of $827 in what was the club’s inaugural event.

“I’m hoping that they will learn leadership skills. We will guide them; give them a direction and something to focus on.

The community spirit was great with all of the baking donated for the sale,” said Youth Mentor Charlene Carey.

“What we originally wanted to do was something local to get word out about the club and now it’s turned into this very nice support for the Food Bank,” said President of the Rotary Club Dawn Riley.

down slightly this year for Santa photos, her busiest day was on Thursday, Dec. 10 when she managed to take 35 photos in 40 minutes. Morritt said during the course of the week, 132 families had their photos taken with Santa.

The smell of evergreens hung in the air as Lakeland Country Florist owner, Rita Elliott hosted a make your own Christmas planter workshop.

“This is the sixth year I’ve had it,” said Elliott. “I used to have it in the back of the store, but the numbers keep growing

every year. We had 65 people this year.”

Tables were set up in the mall’s hallway and participants could bring their own container and ornaments if they chose. A second workshop in designing a “Whoville” tree was offered in the afternoon.

Morritt said it was great to see the mall so busy, but was particularly impressed with the two groups of kids who raised money for two worthy causes.

“What an amazing group of kids, and wonderful support from the community!”

School Christmas Concerts Capture Holiday Spirit

The VES Kindergarten classes and St. Jerome’s Kindergarten to Grade 5 students showcased their Christmas concerts on Dec. 9 and 10 to receptive audiences and resounding applause.

Principal of VES, Michelle Webb said nothing kicks off the holidays like a Christmas concert and added that the Dec. 9 concert was the first time the two kindergarten classes performed together.

The theme of the VES concert was, SNOW! Each of the seven songs highlighted the white fluffy stuff, beginning with “I’m a Little Snowman” sung to the tune of “I’m a Little Teapot.”

With the help of Mrs. Heinrich, Mrs. Bykowski, Miss Makowecki and the musical direction of Miss Leggette, the children sailed though their performances, though not always in unison. This only added to the charm, character and spirit of the concert.

The gym full of parents, neighbours relatives, and friends were invited to partake in treats and goodies following the performance.

Principal Allan Chase of St. Jerome’s addressed the packed theatre in the Alumni Theatre at Lakeland College on Dec. 10 before the Kindergarten students took to the stage and enchanted the audience with their singing.

All of the performances were top notch and the entertaining evening ended with the students sliding, cart wheeling, and jumping across the stage in a big finale.

In case you missed either of these performances, there will be two more chances to capture the holiday spirit before Christmas. They will be livestreamed from the Alumni Theatre at Lakeland College; on Wednesday, Dec. 16 at 7 p.m. (VES Grades 1 and 2) and Thursday, Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. (VES Grades 3 to 5).

This was followed by the Grade 1 to 5’s performance of, “We Three Spies” created and arranged by Christy and Daniel Semsen. The concert was livestreamed allowing relatives that couldn’t attend the performance, to view it remotely.

A non-stop, action-packed hour long performance had the students singing and dancing their way through a variety of classic Christmas songs interspersed with a plot that had Agents E, L and F, recruits with the CIK (Christmas Intelligence Kids), go undercover to bring Christmas cheer to the needy. Access To Narcan In Rural Alberta Saves Lives

For more than 40 years, Narcan (naloxone) has been saving the lives of people who overdose on an opioid.

Naloxone is a medication that reverses respiratory depression from opioid overdose if given in time. Paramedics routinely administer naloxone to opioid overdose victims in the pre-hospital settings in Alberta.

A recent press release from Alberta Health states that more health professionals will now be able to prescribe, administer and distribute naloxone – a drug that can be used to reverse fentanyl overdoses under ministerial orders issued by Health Minister Sarah Hoffman.

Robert Snow, paramedic, and supervisor for the Prairie EMS Vermilion division says he is a huge supporter of all first responders having access to the Narcan

drug.

“Paramedics in Alberta are allowed to use ‘Narcan’ already for patients. I was in Ontario this summer and their paramedics are just getting access to it recently,” said Snow.

“It’s a great drug, and with all these fentanyl overdoes we have nowadays, it gives a person who has overdosed a really great chance of survival. I think having greater access to naloxone is a huge benefit to this province.

“At the moment only the advanced life support guys carry it, I would be a huge supporter of our first responders having it.

“Dewberry is a good example of a place that does not have access to Narcan.

They have the fire first response there, which does an excellent job. They maintain a patient until we get there but with the icy road conditions, it could take us upwards of 40 minutes to get there, so if

they have access to it (Narcan) they could potentially make a positive impact on a person’s outcome,” added Snow.

In a release, Hoffman said, “Too many Albertans’ lives have been cut short by fentanyl, and too many Alberta families have experienced the devastating loss of a loved one due to an accidental overdose. Naloxone is proven to reduce overdose deaths and save lives. That’s why we’re taking action to expand access to it across the province.”

According to an Alberta Health press release on Dec 11, 2015, ‘The ministerial orders will be in place until July 1, 2016, and can be renewed if needed. In the meantime, the Alberta government will continue to work with the federal government, provinces, territories and other stakeholders to make naloxone available without a prescription.’

Between 2011 and 2014 there were

a total of 162 fentanyl-detected and 61 fentanyl-implicated deaths in Alberta.

Narcan can have an effect on the patient within a minute, reducing the depression of the central nervous system that results from a fentanyl overdose. The effect of the Narcan is shorter than the usual length of an overdose so Narcan is often given repeatedly to help against fentanyl overdose symptoms.

Bird Author Encourages People To Reconnect With Nature

“What we are finding is children are becoming extremely estranged from nature. Screens are replacing real life experiences and if people are not connected with nature then they are not going to protect it,” said Pearman.

“The health of the planet depends on people caring about it. I’m hoping that this book will inspire, not just children but maybe grandparents to get their grandkids introduced to nature.

“A bird feeder is something that we can all have and that is sometimes our singular link to nature,” advised Pearman.

“It was the amazing work of Charlotte Wasylik who got the word out to the wider community. We need more young people like Charlotte involved,” said Pearman.

Charlotte started a Facebook group called ‘Alberta Birds’ which now has 4,156 mem ber s. Wasylik says the membership continues to grow with 10 new members joining every day.

Pearman operates Ellis Bird Farm ( w w w. e l l i s b i r d f a r m . c a ) a n d h a s authored/co-authored several other books about birds including ‘Winter Bird Feeding: An Alberta Guide; Nestboxes for Prairie Birds’; ‘NatureS cape Alberta’; ‘Creating and Caring for Wildlife Habitat at Home’; ‘Water

Pearman was honoured with the Nature Educator of the Year Award by the Roger Tory Peterson Bluebird Society for her work with Mountain Bluebirds. The author also received an award from the North American Bluebird Society as well as the Owl Award from the Red Deer River Naturalists.

Pearman is the editor of the Red Deer River Naturalist and writes a magazine column ‘The Gardener’ and a newspaper column in the Red Deer Advocate.

Vermilion Ridge Riders Donates To The Food Bank

Greg Young, from the Vermilion Ridge Riders, presented $740 cash, along with six boxes of food, to Vermilion Food Bank Coordinator Derek Collins at the Holy Name Catholic Church on Friday, December 11.

“The support and donations have been remarkable this year despite the economic times, I’m really happy about it,” said Food Bank Coordinator, Derek Collins.

“Last week we had 72 adults and 19 kids just in the one afternoon come in requesting services and it’s never been that high of a demand as far as anyone

can tell in the history of the food bank.

“While we are well stocked, it’s going out pretty quickly too. But we still are getting great support from different groups and a lot of businesses in town.”

The Vermilion Ridge Riders have been contributing to the Food Bank for the last four years now, and donated double the amount this year from last year.

“I still worry that there are people out there who don’t know that we are here.

If there is a perception of that because the Catholic Church gives us the space, I just want to make clear that it is a community Food Bank and everyone is welcome,” said Collins.

Holiday depression, anxiety and stress can affect anyone at any age.

Sometimes, these feelings are trigg e r e d by a s p e c i f i c eve n t o r l i fe experience. There are many things happening around the holidays that can act as triggers.

What can I do about this?

Holiday depression, stress, anxiety can be managed by following the tips listed above. Many people who experience depression, anxiety and stress during the holidays may think that they should just be able to ‘get over it ’ on their own. O thers may need time to recognize how deeply this affects their life. If your holiday depression, anxiety or stress seems severe or is interfering with your job or home life, talk to your doctor.

Many people’s benefit plans run Januar y to December. It could be beneficial to check into your plan before the end of the year so you can use sessions before they expire.

How can I help a loved one?

Su p p or t ing a l ove d o ne who i s experienc ing holiday depression, anxiety or stress can be difficult. You may not understand why your loved one feels or acts a certain way. Some people who experience this feel like they have to do things a certain way or avoid things or situations, and this can create frustration or conflict with others. You may feel pressured to take part in these behaviours or adjust your own behaviours to protect o r av o i d u p s e t t i n g a l o v e d o n e .

Support can be a delicate balance, but you should expect recovery—in time.

Here are some general tips: • Ask your loved one how you can help them.

• Be patient—learning and practising new coping strategies takes time.

• If your loved one is learning new skills, offer to help them practice.

• L i s te n a n d of fer su p p or t , b u t avoid pushing unwanted advice.

• Set boundaries and seek support for yourself, if needed.

Here are some of the most common holiday triggers and tips to prevent and /or lessen holiday depression, anxiety and stress. Remember, you always have a choice and there are options available to you. We wish you a very happy and healthy holiday season.

• Cut out the things that aren’t truly important.

W h i l e w e h ave been blessed with an unusually warm winter thus far, with ver y little snow, it i s i n ev i t a b l e t h at winter will eventually strike us and more than likely when we least expect it. Gazing at the weather app on my phone over the weekend, I noticed the drop in temperatures expected for next week and it is a constant reminder winter is coming.

It’s that time of year again when I feel like hibernating like a bear and then quickly realize I can’t. There are so many things I need to get done.

Winterizing my vehicle is one of them.

I have to bring my vehicle to the garage or ask my very nice son (yes I am sucking up ) to check all the fluids, brakes, tires, hoses, and belts along with the heating units, as it does not seem to heat up very fast. I have to think about get ting winter tires or, at least, make sure the all-seasons I do have are good enough to last me throughout the winter; last year in my Escape I was slipping all over the place. I need to stock up my SUV with warm fuzzy blankets, some extra gloves, and boots, as I am the queen of not wearing proper footwear during the winter. I will also need a shovel, f l a s h l i g ht , a n d m ay b e eve n s o m e

flares in case I am unfortunate enough to break down or slide off the icy roads during the winter. I may even become very prepared and stick a few snack foods that cold temperatures will not affect, just in case I am stuck there for some hours.

The house needs winterizing too as the doors and windows are not new enough to keep the wind on the outside of the house, and I often feel a cold draft around my feet and shoulders. I have read many different articles on cheap ways to winterize the house, and while I don’t remember ever y thing they have said over the years, there is one that sticks out in my mind because I remember thinking to myself that it would look really weird. It was to put bubble wrap on old windows. It is supposed to keep and trap the cool air to the window but still let light in your house.

For those doors that have the light shining through on the bottom of the door, place a towel or some decorative door stopper along the bottom. It will keep that pesky cold out and help keep your hard earned dollars from going up in smoke when you turn up the furnace to help counteract the drafts.

At the Bill 6 Town Hall public meeting at the Seniors’ Centre on Dec. 5 an open mic discussion took place and Robert Dixon, who was quoted in the article, got up to speak. He identified himself as a local producer and an Ag instructor which prompted MLA Vermilion-Lloydminster Dr. Richard Starke to ask Mr. Dixon about his place of employment. Based on that information, Robert Dixon was identified as an Ag instructor at Lakeland College in our article, although the Voice was not suggesting that he was representing Lakeland College at the meeting. Dear Editor This past June ATCO Electric made an offer to purchase the Lakeland REA, which the Board declined on behalf of membership. If you go to the ATCO website you will see that ATCO Electric is one of 18 companies held by the ATCO group, which is an Alberta based company founded in 1947. Since its modest beginnings ATCO has become a multi-billion dollar publicly-traded corporation with diverse operations worldwide and has remained all Canadian with its headquarters in Calgary.

Like many of us, I too like to own assets and make or save money. But let’s take a closer look at Lakeland REA and how we’ve been doing. REAs are essentially member-owned cooperatives. Let me ask you then, have you ever received a

dividend payment from Lakeland? I know I haven’t. At the recent Annual Meeting the Board clearly stated the REA is run on a not-for-profit basis, which I understand. But unfortunately in the case of Lakeland they have recently lost large sums of member’s money. The July 2014 audited Financial Statement shows a loss of $452,641 on energy hedges and Professional fees for “legal and hedge” at $52,623… most of which I suspect were hedge management fees. And it gets worse… the July 2015 Financial Statement showed a loss of $870,701 on energy hedges plus $130,215 in Professional fees for legal and hedge. These amounts total to approximately 1.5 Million dollars of member’s money lost in the last two years of operation; I feel this is unacceptable. And, if such losses continue

the REA will be broke and the Board will simply levy additional fees to rebuild the reserve fund and we as members will be forced to pay even more for our electrical service. I would be the first to defend the REA if our monthly power bills were less than my neighbours who are with ATCO, but this is not the case. Even Lakeland admits most monthly bills would be lower if we were with ATCO. Additionally, if we as REA members ever want to recoup our member share equity the only way of doing so is by selling the REA, whether to ATCO or any other willing buyer.

There also appears to be some misinformation about ATCO’s purchase offer.

Some people think it’s a foregone conclusion the REA is going to be sold. Others believe we as members will get to vote on the offer in the near future. Both of these

Sometime during the early hours of the morning of December 1st, 2015, two males broke into the old Durness School site north of Lloydminster. Entry was gained by kicking the front door in, causing damage to the frame and door. The males then proceeded to smash several dishes located in the building. A wooden chair was thrown through a large set of windows causing considerable damage to the windows and window frame. The Kitscoty RCMP are seeking the public’s assistance in identify-

As we wel c omed in December, it has treated us great thus far, even the snow was melting for several days, and we will take that. More than half of the snow has disappeared and got rid of some of that nasty ice on the roads and sidewalks.

This past week was full of outdoor adventures for me, which included a road trip to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, not only a mouthful to say but a long road trip for myself alone.

Well, I guess I can’t say I was totally alone; at least for half the trip as I was on my adventure to pick up my new pup Miss Oohohh. My wife Roxanne had to work, so I went solo.

I didn’t mind the trip there as it was a nice sunny day, and I enjoyed the scenery. Most think that trip is boring with no scenery, but I see outdoor adventures on every corner.

It also gave me four hours of thinking about my Miss Pickles and how much I truly miss her, but I stayed positive and tried to smile.

I met the breeder in a suitable ironic place in Saskatoon, Cabela’s Parking lot.

Cabela’s is the giant outdoor and sporting goods store.

As the breeder carried her to my vehicle all I could say was, “oh oh look

at you!!” she was positively “oh oh” cute and beautiful. I was twitterpated at first sight.

I didn’t even go shopping at Cabela’s.

While waiting, I did run in and buy her a big expensive chew bone for the trip home. I had an open air pup travel cage for her safety.

I started off with her in the back seat of the SUV, but that didn’t last long. I stopped and with a big blanket squeezed the travel carrier next to me in the passenger seat, so I could pet and talk to her. She was extremely good company, and we stopped several times to do her business, have a bite to eat, drink, and even play in the snow; she was a pleasure to travel with.

The trip home seemed half the time, I guess it was due to my new co-pilot; of course I had to show her off in town before getting home; even though both of us were very tired from the eight-hour road trip, that didn’t stop us from a long walk around her new home.

We explored the duck pond, “north forty” bush where I get firewood, and it has good quad trails for walking. She loved it, and it was evident quickly who was going to outlast who on this first day.

As we cuddled by the fireplace on the couch, my wife wanted to discuss her name. She said she was golden, and her name should be “Miss Nugget” which was good, but all I said was “oh oh.”

She keeps c oming up with cute

names, and even says, no one likes the name Oohohh…with wide open eyes I respond with “OH OH..oh no you did… nt!” and whispered to Oohohh “let’s go for a walk Oohohh”.

The poor pup may have a few aka’s or aliases, but she is my buddy, and she is definitely an Oohohh to me. Let us know what you think my e-mail is neil.lostarrow@gmail.com - all your input means a lot.

We bonded so fast; it was incredible!

No matter where I go, even if it’s to the bathroom, she is two steps behind me.

She is incredibly smart for only being a “baby” of seven weeks old.

In fact, this weekend during my babysitting vigil, I slept on the couch, and we went for at least one walk outdoors every hour on the hour, but we also noticed her nose started to get pinkish…I think we kissed the black off!

She already will sit for treats, and loves the “bones” I made for her, deer antler sheds with all the sharp points cut and rounded off; don’t tell her they are training tools already.

Miss Oohohh is classified as a Giant Alaskan Malamute, from bloodlines that Miss Pickles had in her. I call Miss Pickles her big sister and somehow I swear Miss Pickles is influencing Miss Oohohh; which is mostly the mischievous traits at this time. But it’s eerie and also heartwarming at the same time how their personalities are so similar. We may

have to include a “Miss Oohohh’s Chronicles” in the near future.

As I write this, Miss Oohohh is by my side, and I am sure Miss Pickles is by my other. I am happy to say I feel lonely no more, and there is no room for a hole in my heart with both pups being in there.

Folks, thank you for getting me through this. All the kind, comforting and wise words from readers, friends, the staff at this outstanding newspaper and family, truly made a huge difference.

We even received signed cards with warming comments from all the staff from both of the best veterinary clinics in the country, thank you to both the Vermillion and Wainwright veterinary clinics.

A Gentleman from Saskatchewan took the time to call, and we had a great talk.

He builds birdhouses for very worthwhile causes and charities; he mentioned he was sending me several birdhouses in Miss Pickles’ name. We are honoured.

The Government of Alberta has amended Bill 6 to respond to farm families’ concerns.

Amendments to the Enhanced Protection for Farm and Ranch Workers Act will assure farming families of their ability to pass on traditions to their kids: the next generation of producers. That’s how this province was built.

The new legislation will not affect: 15122DG1 •

purely family-owned and operated farm and ranch operations, even if family members are paid,

•

families’ ability to teach their children about farming and farming traditions,

•

kids’ participation in 4-H programs, or

•

neighbours who volunteer to help each other out.

The new Act will reflect legislation in other provinces that: •

protects the safety of waged workers and helps prevent workplace accidents, and

•

compensates waged workers, or those workers’ families, in case of disabling injury or death on the job.

Family farms continue to flourish in all other provinces with similar legislation. Ours will too.

In my grandpa Wolters time, he lived his last years alone out on the farm with no conveniences like we’d call, “Basic” now.

There was no power, so no running water, no nice furnace with a thermostat, and travelled by horsepower, either a saddle horse or team and had to fend for himself, even to toting his own firewood out of the bush!!

We don’t see that kind of thing too often now, but our wonderful old seniors who survived all the trials our country could muster are often seemingly left to spend their last days with no family or friends that will take time to show them appreciation for their contribution to our countries success!!

Pay Back Time

When I was living in Two Hills, I had a guitar playing friend who was a Seven Day Adventist Pastor and he loved playing his guitar for shut-ins in hospitals and long term extended care hospitals, senior’s homes and the like, and wonder of wonders invited me along.

There was also a banjo player who had been a mail carrier in the city for thirty seven years. He’d gotten out of the city and retired in, you guessed it, Two Hills. It was so special to hear those two play and be able to contribute to the sound.

It started a whole new way of life for this old cowboy and when I ended up back home here in Vermilion it seemed the thing to do here.

In Two Hills there was a need in town as well as in Willingdon, Andrew, Myrnam, and even Vegreville. The need in all those places were so similar and

The Tigers have amassed one of the worst losing streaks in recent memory as they have dropped eight straight games. Injuries have played a role as the team has been unable to ice a full squad, however all teams endure injuries throughout a season.

The Tigers travelled to Onion Lake for a date with the Border Chiefs on December 2nd. The Tigers were only able to dress three lines and it showed as the Chiefs took it to the Tigers in a 7-3 loss.

Chase Carlson, Ryan VanGenderen and Trent Dutchak scored for the Tigers.

The Tigers returned to the ice for the Chris Cusack Memorial Game on Saturday, December 5. A large crowd was on hand to watch the Selects triumph over the Jr’s 8-5. The game was secondary to the fact this was the final game between the Selects and the Tigers. The contributions over the years have been north

of $90,000 for STARS Ambulance. The Tigers wish to thank the fans, all the players who have been involved and especially Chris’s family who have been very supportive.

The Tigers return to home action this Friday, December 11 and Saturday, December 12 as they face the Saddle Lake Warriors and Cold Lake Ice respectively. The Yellow and Black wrap up the weekend with a date in Vegreville to play the Rangers on Sunday.

became a wonderful way to share the talent I was so lucky to be blessed with.

Over the years there have been several people involved in this with me, my dear friend Glen Teasdale plays keyboard and has been so wonderful so often and there have been more than a few guitar players to help out.

Now there are two, Phil Willis, and a fellow flier from Lloydminster, Eddie Krusick, who bolsters Phil. The two styles are a compliment to my voice and harmonica and so far we have no name.

I’d like to say it is so very special to have those wonderful old seniors in so many places come out to hear us and thank us for coming to visit them. I really feel it is pay-back time to show those dear folks that they are remembered and that they are so worthy for any effort we can put forward to thank them for all their trials in the building of this country.

In my young years, seniors were lucky if they had a home where they could live with their sons or daughters, and they could share their experiences with their grand children. That’s not the case now of course, because we do have those wonderful homes for seniors now, and our folks are well cared for in all respects, but things being like they are in this busy world the seniors are sometimes seemingly neglected by their families. So many times on special occasions even when we have entertained these folks, there have been NO family or friends visiting them.

You’d never hear a discouraging word, as the song says, but I know the feeling of being left out.

I was sitting in traffic talking to myself when the voices on the radio interrupted my important conversation. They were engaged in a discussion about...underwear. Some people don’t bother with such things, I know.

It is their own business. Some others are more than concerned. Mom always thought it virtuous to recognize when to discard the ragged stuff. Just ask yourself, ‘would I want to be caught wearing those if I got into an accident and were suddenly on the way to hospital?’ The right answer was obvious. Naturally, the condition of your underwear would be of utmost importance if ever you found yourself in such dior circumstance.

But this radio conversation wasn’t part of a 1950s skit on underpants etiquette, it was about a project called Got Ginch.

The poll did not state how far back the survey went to determine this.

My husband and his siblings are firstgeneration Canadians, their parents having emigrated from the Ukraine in the early 20th century. My children are first-generation Canadians on my side of the family as I immigrated to Canada in 1970 with my Canadian husband. Two of them have chosen U.S. citizenship and careers in the States.

entrepreneur, Brent King. In 2008, his initial goal had been to gather a supply of underwear enough to last for one yea and donate it to the Mustard Seed Street Ministry in Calgary. As often is the case with great ideas, King’s attracted many who wished to contribute to his project.

With the combined efforts of individual and corporate sponsorships, supplies of new underwear were distributed to homeless shelters in ten major cities across our nation. Got Ginch had an impact.

Next to food and shelter, what could be more applicable to people struggling to maintain some dignity than adequate clothing, including clean socks? And fresh underwear.

What seems most obvious once it’s drawn to your attention might never have occurred to you before that moment of eureka. Underwear. Of course. I’ve donated coats and pants and shirts.

Toques and socks. And then last year, when a group I belonged to disbanded

and we considered what to do with the funds remaining in our bank account, we called a shelter to ask what might most benefit the residents there. Socks and underwear, the representative answered without a moment’s hesitation.

The radio conversation reminded me (again) to think beyond my own reality.

When I need socks, I simply open the sock drawer. Never do I consider that I might have to wear the same underwear, socks, or any article of clothing I’m wearing in this moment for the next week, or indefinitely. My list of primary concerns does not include figuring out what I’ll wear when the only garments I own are spinning through the wash cycles at a public laundromat. But that’s not the case for everyone.

How impor tant it all is for so many reasons. How overwhelming it can be for some. How exciting for others. How indescribably painful. How bountiful. It’s

enced before. Learning to breathe in below zero weather is a challenge. Frost bite will be a new concept. The language will be a barrier for many. Navigating our shopping centres, grocery stores and markets will be a totally new experience—no bartering or arguing prices. Fixed price tags are a way of life in Canada.

Education for these people, the first prerequisite for any type of progress, will be achieved only if there are enough tutors/ teachers who can help them master the language. Too many immigrant women are left lingering for years without knowing the language of their new country. They are seen cleaning floors in hospitals and serving as housemaids in hotels clustering in small groups speaking their first language.

It is natural for immigrants who do not speak English/French to cluster in their own groups, but not if it is to the detriment of

learning and teaching those languages to their children.

Affordable, quality housing in Canada is nearly impossible for young people just starting out. How will it be achieved for the thousands of Syrian refugees coming into Canada? Culture shock is such a big hurdle to overcome. In spite of our leaders and law makers going after hate crimes, there will be those few who make life very tough for our new immigrants.

I remember only too well the way I was treated in my new neighbourhood in Regina. Due to the fact that we had American license plates on our vehicle, one neighbour asked me if my husband was a draft dodger. The shock registered explicitly on her face when she found out I was the American in the family. a strange time in so many ways, but it can be an opportune one, if we think beyond the parameters of our own reality.

If gifts are symbols of love and generosity, the heartfelt offerings extended one to the other with genuine selflessness, something to temporarily lift us into a state of grateful happiness, then no one among us ought be excluded.

Think of something else. Someone else, other than those who already have so much. While you’re out in the shops filling your cart with things you imagine will bring your best loved some happiness and you the satisfaction of having created it, maybe include a few items from the ordinary bins of basics. Deliver it to a place where it might truly benefit, might make a small difference, might lift someone’s spirit, even if you won’t be present to witness the purity of that poignant moment.

Drive home knowing that you did that.

Or, will we find them clustered in hospitals and hotels working in menial jobs? Or, driving taxi cabs? Will they end up circling their wagons in a hostile Canadian environment having to fight both the elements and a cold culture? Time will tell, won’t it?

• Watch your child for wet clothes, feeling chilled, frostbite, and being tired.

• Teach your child about frostbite and hypothermia and how important it is to dress warmly.

Sledding safety tips • Only sled when the temperature is above -19 ˚C. Think about the windchill factor.

• Choose hills with a gentle slope and a long, clear run-off area.

• Sled on snowy hills and stay away from icy surfaces. Make sure the hill has no jumps, bumps, holes, bare spots, and obstacles.

• Stay away from roads, rivers, railway tracks, and parking lots.

• Don’t sled over ice-covered rivers, streams, or ponds.

• Only go sledding in the daylight on hills that are well-lit.

• Your child must be supervised by a responsible adult. If your child is under 5, have a responsible adult on the sled with him or her.

• Go down the hill sitting up or kneeling on the sled. Don’t go head first.

• Wear a hockey or ski/snowboard helmet.

• Check the sled to make sure it is in good shape. Use a sled with good brakes and steering. Plastic discs and inner tubes are not safe because they are hard to control.

Mincemeat

Mincemeat is a traditional Christmas d ish, however few people have tasted homemade mince meat tarts, and many people are surprised that there is actually meat in mincemeat.

The mincemeat that you can buy in jars at the supermarket does not contain any meat, but instead has high amounts of sugar. This recipe came from our friend who is an expert butcher by trade. It is my husband that always makes a double batch. He has adjusted the recipe slightly to suit his tastes.

The original recipe used grated apples instead of apple sauce. If you find suet difficult to obtain, you can use butter. Moose or beef can be substituted for venison.

Select dark raisins for more of their beneficial resveratol. Resveratol, beside its heart healthy benefits, also has been shown to prevent the cold virus from replicating.

The spices offer additional health benefits such as the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties of cloves, the antioxidant and detoxifying properties of allspice, the antioxidant benefits of nutmeg and the blood sugar regulating properties of cinnamon. Orange peel contains hesperatin, which helps to lower blood pressure, regulate cholesterol and reduce inflamma-

tion. The history of mincemeat goes back to England where it was a Christmas favourite of Kings. Some recipes will add 1/2 cup of rum or brandy to the mixture.

A word of caution, if you are using premade tart shells, do not use ones made with vegetable oil, as they do not really contain any vegetables and vegetable oils are always chemically processed.

Instead opt for pure lard, which has only been heated enough to melt the fat.

The dairy cow is often compared to a high functioning machine where all moving parts are of utmost importance.

The more comfortable dairy cows are on their feet, the more they eat and the more they produce overall throughout their lactation. That’s why regular hoof maintenance and prompt treatment of problems is critical to the success of dairy operations.

Philip Spence, owner of Silver Fern Hoof Trimming, taught a two-day dairy hoof trimming cour se at L akeland College’s Vermilion campus Nov. 26 and 27. Students learned about the anatomical structure of the hoof, different hoof diseases and lesions, and the 5-step Dutch method of trimming. The class also discussed ways to improve cow comfort to prevent lameness.

“The cow’s feet will reflect how they’re housed and what they’re fed,” explains Spence.

Most dairies hire a professional hoof trimmer every six months. No one attend-

ing the course had plans to become a full-time hoof trimmer, they just wanted to develop skills to assess a lame cow.

“I’m taking this course to help with the maintenance between hoof trimmings. There are usually a few times a week that you need to put an animal in the chute and (assess) them,” says Doug Child who is involved in his family’s dairy near Killam.

“I hoof trim at the dairy I work at but I wanted a better understanding of trimming to make sure I do it correctly,” said Casey Tilma who is employed at Hazel Bluff Dairy near Westlock.

“I now know which areas of the hoof I need to trim and which ones I can leave.”

In addition to learning theory in class, students practiced their skills on cadaver feet. Each student worked on more than a dozen feet during the two days.

“The theory and practice they’re gaining during this course will give them the confidence to recognize the cow’s problem and then treat it appropriately,” says Spence.

2 1/2 cups raisins 1 cup freshly squeezed orange juice, and the peel 1 cup vinegar 1 tablespoon nutmeg 1 tablespoon allspice 1 tablespoon cloves 4 teaspoons cinnamon Roast the meat, cool and put through a food chopper. In a large bowl combine all the ingredients. Use a reamer to extract the orange juice and then chop the orange peel in the food chopper and stir it into the mixture. Spoon into unbaked tart shells and bake at 425 degrees for 20 minutes.

This recipe makes 6 dozen tarts. They freeze well in a tightly sealed container.

Tigers Win! The Vermilion Tigers had a successful win over the Saddle Lake Warriors, ending the game with a final score of 7 – 4 at the Vermilion Stadium on Friday night, December 11.

Vermilion Tigers Manager Dean Golinowski said the game went well. “We played a stronger game than the last few games. Scoring 7 goals was very good for us. Saddle Lake were up 2 -1 at the end of the first period but we battled back well and put the pressure on them outshooting them and directing 50 shots at their goalie,” said Manager Golinowski. Bowtell Community Centre held a Christmas concert on December 6, with over 50 people attending, 24 of them little ones enjoyed a visit from Santa.

The program included singing carols with Helen King accompanying us. Five year old Jack Schalin played “Joy to the World” on the piano. Four young people, Andrea Richardson, Monica and Steven Hobbis and Tayla Zacharies sang and had actions to the “Cup song”. Rachel and Abby Zacharuk sang “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer”.

Helen King recited “The Night Before Christmas” and had the audience doing actions to it.

There were two families represented there with the fifth and sixth generations being present – Repp and Moses.

As the Bowtell School was built in 1906, there has been a traditional concert most years.

Fun With The Peanuts Gang The Keenan family held a Peanuts themed fundraiser at their house on Saturday, Dec. 12 for Santa’s Anonymous. “We wanted to do something for teens,” said Don Keenan. “They often get overlooked at Christmas.” The fundraiser was originally intended as a Skate with Peanuts event, but Keenan said the weather was too warm to make ice in the weeks leading up to the event. The family turned it into a movie night and had a Charlie Brown Christmas playing on a big screen outside, hot chocolate, popcorn, and marshmallows on hand while Peanuts character cut outs added to the fun. M r. W o o d w a r d and the senior boys’ basketball Marauders star ted their season victoriously: they took it to the hole and earned Third in Daysland two weekends ago, and then defeating Ashmont 55 to 37 in a midweek league game.

Last weekend they were in Camrose for another tournament.

Junior Marauders have also had a strong start. This year’s junior girls’ team consists of Emily Elder, Grace Cleland, Sydney Joa, Ashley Jones, Alyx Ward, Kailey Geall, Julie Newberry, Hailey Roach, Avary Hickman, Paige Zweifel, Dallas Bodie and Delainey Selte; coached by Kristi Borysiuk and Matthew Borysiuk. They recently won a league game against Kitscoty and then earned Bronze in a tournament in Marwayne on December 4 and 5, competing in tough battles. “We are very proud of the girls’ season so far and cannot wait for them to

Christmas is right around the corner, and VES is in the Christmas spirit. Already, on Dec. 2, the Grade 6 students went caroling and the Kindergarten concert was on Dec. 9. Grades 1-2 will have their concert at Lakeland College at 7:00 on Dec. 16 and Grades 3-5 will have theirs at the college at 7:00 on Dec. 17. There will be dress rehearsals for the last two at the college – Grades 1-2 at 9:15 on Dec. 15 and Grades 3-5 at 9:15 on Dec. 17 – if you want to watch them during the day in less crowded surroundings.

Well done element ar y s tu d e nt s! O n c e again the acting, singing, and dancing was amazing! The Kindergarten students started the Christmas Concert off singing “Jingle Bells” and “It Must Be Santa”. The Grade one to five students presented the play “We Three Spies”. A play in which Agents E, L and F recruits with the CIK (Christmas Intelligence Kids), a covert group of spies who secretly bring Christmas cheer to the needy. But this year they’re facing an especially difficult challenge: keeping Ms. Harriet King, a Scrooge-like landlord, from evicting them from their headquarters, confiscating donations, and cancelling their Christmas Nativity program. It takes a little expert espionage and a lot of God’s unconditional love for Ms. King to change her tune as she finally joins the CIK and the entire town in a musical celebration of the true meaning of Jesus’ birth. This year’s Christmas Concert was another wonderful success because of all the preparing and hard work our students have put in over the last six weeks. The grade five students did a spectacular job presenting the play to the packed theatre gaining many laughs and great applause from the audience. Each grade presented

VIBE News - November brought in quite a few entries for the VIBE Pink Shirt Day Design Contest. It has been great to see that students at VES are eager to make a difference by thinking about the positive things that they can encourage themselves and others to do instead of bullying. During Bullying Awareness Week, the Grade 6 VIBE Advisor y students read storybooks to students in Grades 1-3 and led class discussions about bullying. Some of the classroom programs on the go at VES include Building Mental Wellness Kids and Youth, 7 Habits of Happy Kids, 7 Habits of Happy Youth, and Study Skills. Throughout

The Grade 8/9 girls’ team went to Marwayne the first weekend of December and went undefeated winning the gold medal game against Paradise Valley 26-19. The Grade 6/7 team has also gotten off to a great start, welcoming new grade 6 players and continuing to develop their skills. The junior boys basketball team played in Marwayne last week, executing a well-played game.

Congratulations to the Sr. Girls Basketball teams as they finished fourth in their Home Tournament the first weekend of December. Great start to the year ladies. The Sr. Boys basketball team also finished fourth in their home tournament.

They started off strong defeating Kitscoty on Friday. On Saturday they lost to St. Paul. They took the lead early in their final game against Ashmont but were unable to hold on losing 63-54. The boys and girls played in St. Paul this past weekend.

We have a very busy week before Christmas Holidays. The High School students will be taking part in the “Five Days of Christmas”. On Monday students are encouraged to bring their own “Mug” for a sweet cup of hot chocolate while they wear their pajamas all day. Tues-

day is “Brain Freeze” Day. Students will compete in a “Slushie Slurping” Contest.

Wear your special Christmas Hat on Wednesday and pay $2.00 to “Break a Rule”. Thursday is Christmas Sweater and Red/Green Day so remember to DressUp in your best Christmas colours. Finally on Friday students will participate in the traditional “Warm Fuzzies” and Ethnic Lunch followed by a variety of activities in the afternoon.

Wednesday, December 16 will see the present Sr. Boys and Girls Basketball teams taking on Alumni teams for a

great game of basketball. The girls’ game will start at 6:00 pm followed by the boys’ game. Come out and cheer on present and past Spartans.

On Thursday, December 17 students will gather at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. to celebrate our monthly mass. In the afternoon “Lip Sync” Battles will take place in the gym. Who will be crowned “2015 Lip Sync Champion”?

Now in its fourth year, the President’s Gala is growing into a unique event that showcases how students take the lead at Lakeland. Students help organize the gala and they provide auction items, including garden sheds built on campus and aesthetic spa ser vices l e ar n e d i n c l a s s. D ur i n g t h e g a l a students welcome guests, emcee and help serve the meal.

This Christmas, send a Gratitude Letter to someone who you are particularly grateful for and let them know why they are so special to you. If you are crafty, build yourself a gratitude bracelet. A simple “friendship-style” bracelet can be a great gratitude reminder (or add inexpensive charms or beads to symbolize things that you are thankful for - check your local craft store for supplies).This would be a great holiday activity for the whole family!

Bundle up and go for a Gratitude Stroll.

Practice being mindful and pay attention to all of the things to be grateful for in our community. Start a family gratitude jar and put in little notes throughout the month and then read them together. Put up a reminder in your home like a small sign or a symbolic item that helps you to be grateful every time you see it. This last idea is one of my favorites, the next time

The Pelletiers Delivered A Thrilling Performance

The Pelletier Family with Friends celebrated Christmas in a packed Alumni Hall on December 5. “Family, Friends� aptly describe this multi-talented group of artists whose powerful sense of kinship and core well-being connects with the audience before the music has begun.

Freddie and Sheila Pelletier opened the show with jokes and quips about scratched vinyl records, then Sheila stirred the crowd with some expert yodelling. Alpine yodelling has criss-crossed north america with the travelling minstrels since the 1800s, but became the rage in the 1920s. The great Canadian yodeller was Donn Reynolds of Winnipeg, whose vocal talents earned him two world yodelling records. On Saturday night, Sheila Pelletier earned huge admiration from a spellbound Vermilion.

The Pelletiers delighted us with a sweet rendition of “Oh Holy Night� which set the mood for the evening, and followed with a jazzy, joyous “Jingle Bells�. The

pace reached fever pitch with Daniel Gervais and his extraordinary fiddling skills which, paired with Clint Pelletier’s expert guitar, made for a thrilling combination of sounds. “Caravan� and “Freight Train� rocked the crowd. Clint and Daniel then delivered two silky Bach preludes which would have made Johann Sebastian proud.

Thea Pelletier belted out a sultry, pitch-per fect a cappella “La Vie en Rose� with a powerful, husky voice that could mobilize many mothers into enrolling their children in Planet Music, Thea and Clint’s music school in Edmonton.

The Pelletiers closed the show with with a charming “Silent Night�. The Allied Arts Council wishes to thank Lil Sweet who presented this very special performance, our last of 2015. Trot, Walk Or Run To Celebrate Life

“ It ’s a hard thing to talk about,” said Donna Krilow-Lorenz, regional coordinator of the Canadian Transplant Association (CTA) Lloydminster Branch. “Hopefully our fun event, Trot, will get people talking.”

The first annual Transplant Trot will take place at the indoor track at the Servus Sports Centre in Lloydminster on January 23 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The Canadian Transplant Association does a Trot every year across Canada usually in the spring to coincide with National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week, to raise awareness about organ and tissue donation and to increase the number of registered organ and tissue donors.

K r i l ow - Lo r e nz s a i d h o s t i n g t h e event in January meant they wouldn’t be competing with Mother Nature, or other events.

“We are very fortunate to have the Servus Sports Centre agree to close the walking track for our indoor event!

Januar y is a fairly quiet month for charity events,” added Krilow-Lorenz.

If people are not interested in participating in the five-kilometer run/ walk she said they can also donate online. “ We have received a number of donations on the website, so we know people are paying attention.”

Krilow-Lorenz said the goal of the Transplant Trot is two-fold. The first is to raise awareness about the issue of organ and tissue donation, and the second is to celebrate transplant recipients, living donors, and donor families (families who have lost a loved one who was an organ donor at the time of their passing).

“In some European countries you have to opt out of being an organ donor. It’s a shift in thinking. If you can save a life you will.”

Krilow-Lorenz said the opposite is true in Canada; it is an “opt in” system where even if the donor has signed his/her donation card, the family still needs to sign off.

“If it ever came to be that Canada would consider the opt out system instead of the opt in, it would save a lot of lives.”

Krilow-Lorenz said there can also be a stigma attached with organ and tissue donations.

“Some people think, ‘I’m not going to give a k idney to someone who hasn’t taken care of themselves.’ “ A large majority of transplant recipients have a genetic predisposition to a disease or condition that has compromised their organs, such as diabetes or cystic fibrosis said Krilow-Lorenz. She has also spoken to countless families who have said their children contracted a virus that has taken their organs.

“I want to bring awareness to help these children,” she said. “And to show just how common the need is – almost everybody knows somebody who could have had a second chance at life.”

Krilow-Lorenz is a transplant recipient herself. When she went into kidney failure, she said she was for tunate that all her siblings came forward to donate and three out of the five were suitable candidates for donation.

“I was also very fortunate that I did not have to go on a wait list...we want to give hope to people who are on waiting lists.”

Krilow-Lorenz celebrated her 11th year as a transplant recipient in Nove-

mer of this year.

“We want to celebrate recipients, living donors, and members of donor families in a Recognition Walk.”

These three groups of people will do one lap around the walking track, and when their lap is complete everyone else can join in.

“These are the people that have done it,” said Krilow-Lorenz. “This is a truly memorable experience for all of us touched by organ and tissue donation.”

Apart from the fact that the Lloydminster Trot is an indoor event held in the of f-season, another unique feature of the walk/run is the introduction of a Host Family that will help plan

and organize the event. A host family is one that has experienced organ d onation or has a family mem ber awaiting donation. The Harris family of Lloydminster is the Host Family for this year’s Trot.

“We get a lot of people stopping by our information booth who are interested in how to go about doing it (donating),” said Krilow-Lorenz.

Mannville Christmas Extravaganza A Huge Success!

The day star ted of f with breakfast consisting of pancakes, sausages, hash browns and eggs prepared by the Mannville Skating Club. Lunch followed with the Historical Society serving some delicious pie for dessert.

Santa was able to take time from his busy schedule to make an appearance.

Children got their pictures taken sitting in the chair with Santa. A special room was set up for children to shop for their parents as well. They bought the gifts, which were then wrapped and ready to put under the tree for their mothers, fathers or siblings. They also had coloring pages and crafts to keep them busy while their mothers shopped in the hall for their gifts.

The Annual Mannville Christmas Extravaganza craft sale was held on Saturday, December 5th at the Mannville Recreation Center.

It was hosted by the Mannville and District Chamber of Commerce and has been a community event dating back to the early 70’s. The event kicked off Hollydaze, Mannville’s calendar of Christmas events in December.

Shoppers of all ages were able to browse for gifts from over 50 tables set up in the hall. Vendors came from Mannville and neighboring communities to participate. The selection included baking, sewing, quilting, woodworking, jewellery, Christmas crafts and arrangements, children’s toys, books and clothes, golf

Another activity that was well received were the sleigh rides by Dawn and Brenda Jackson. There were a lot of smiles on children’s faces just to see the horses, as the weather helped out with that outdoors activity.

The last event of the day was a Family skate held at the arena and supported by Mannville Minor Hockey. The event was huge success due to the many supporting groups and volunteers in the Mannville community.

Ringing In The Christmas Spirit

A Christmas Concer t featuring the Happy Harmonizers (seniors’ choir) and A Touch of Brass (handbell choir) performed Christmas carols and entertained at the Vermilion Seniors’ Centre on December 9.

Despite the freezing rain and icy roads, a big crowd gathered to enjoy Christmas music and get into the spirit of Christmas. The Happy Harmonizers group performed a number of the older classics followed by a whirlwind of Christmas classics while encouraging the crowd to join in.

The Touch of Brass group gave a ringing performance with their bells and the Quartet was performed by five people. Admission was paid by making a donation to the food bank (silver collection or non-perishable food item).
