Backbenchers Key To Stopping Bill 6

Vermilion-Lloydminster MLA Dr. Richard Starke hosted a Town Hall meeting that over 300 people attended at the Seniors’ Centre on Dec. 5.

During an open mic discussion, close to 20 people publically shared their concerns, frustrations and fears about how Bill 6 could potentially affect their individual farms, lives and livelihoods.

Starke couldn’t provide any clear answers regarding the legislation due to a lack of detailed information in the bill itself.

“The information on this legislation has been very confusing, and it seems to change on a day-to-day basis,” said Starke.

“At the very least, this legislation has to be significantly changed and slowed down, it goes too far, it goes too fast and it hasn’t properly consulted with folks that have to live with this legislation.”

Premier Rachel Notley has said the bill will pass, but consultations will continue afterward and amendments will be made.

North of Vermilion farmer, Joanne McCrae said altering the bill as they go along is like writing the NDP government a blank cheque on the bill.

“What do we need to do to make sure this doesn’t get stuffed down our throats?” asked McCrae.

Starke said the PC’s are using legislative tactics to slow the bill down.

However, some of the speakers were looking to the MLA to provide answers on how to stop the bill altogether, not just slow it down.

A fifth generation farmer, Scott Anderson cited that there have been three occasions in Alberta’s history where the Lieutenant Governor has denied bills being put forward as they were in clear violation of the will of

Albertans. A plebiscite was also suggested and the question was put forward about whether there was some means by which the government could be constitutionally recalled.

“I don’t know of a mechanism where that could be done,” said Starke. “This is the government that was voted in on May 5.

That is the reality we’re in right now.”

Starke said the best weapon at their disposal was social media for organizing and spreading the word quickly.

“We have 55,000 supporters on social media, and they’re (government) still not listening,” said Vermilion area farmer Melissa Guenthner.

She made an emotional plea to Starke; “What do we do? Do we hire a lawyer? Do we hire a lobbyist? What do we have to do so our voices are as strong as the labour unions?”

Apart from writing letters, continuing

social media efforts and sending emails, Starke said one way to potentially stop the bill would be to get the backbenchers to vote against it.

“Theoretically those are the folks, along with the opposition, who are there to hold the government in account,” said Starke.

“From a numbers standpoint, that is the only way there’s a possibility this bill will be withdrawn,” he added. “Fourteen votes would have to be swung in order for it to be defeated.”

Starke said he voted against a bill when he was a backbencher and although it upset his colleagues, he felt it was the right thing to do for his constituents.

Robert Dixon, an Ag instructor at Lakeland College said, “We have gained support - we have momentum and we need to further that to stop this government.”

A second reading of the bill is expected to continue on Monday, Dec. 7.

The Largest Vintage Snowmobile Show In Canada

Crowds travelled from far and wide to view the largest vintage snowmobile show in Canada at the Vermilion Regional Centre on December 5.

It was the 4th Annual Snowmobile Expo hosted by the Vermilion Ridge Riders.

Vermilion Ridge Riders’ Vice President Chris Swan who organized the d i s p l ay of ant i q u e an d c o ll e c t i b l e snowmobiles, said the club had been busy organizing in the months leading up to the event.

“This year is bigger and better than ever. There are more and more snowmobile enthusiasts and vintage collectors coming out of the woodwork every year. We have a collector here today,

who called us up a few months ago, that owns with 170 sleds,” said Swan.

Swan star ted snowmobiling himself back in 1969 and owns 45 sleds.

Vermilion Ridge Riders President Warren Young said that this year’s turnout was the biggest crowd to date despite the current economic downturn.

“We have snowmobiles on display today that came from all over Alberta, and some from Saskatchewan. We talked with other clubs like the Relic Riders, which is an Alber ta wide snowmobile club, we just made phone calls and invited a lot of people,” said Young.

Some of the oldest snowmobiles on display dated back to the 1950s with

the majority of the vintage snowmobiles still in running condition.

Dealers from the four major brands, Ar tic Cat, Polaris, Ski-Doo and Yamaha, were on hand showing off all the latest toys and taking questions from interested buyers.

We’re heading back down to the Championships again in January and I’m hoping I can bring another one back home.”

Christmas Spirit Community Dinner

This year will mark the 20 th year the ‘Community Christmas Dinner’ will be taking place on Christmas Day in Vermilion.

It provides a gathering and celebration dinner for people who may find themselves alone on Christmas. Community Christmas Dinner was originally started

by Ron Moses, in 1996, as a place of retreat for people who are alone or have nowhere to go on Christmas Day. “In the past I’ve had people from Japan who were studying at the College join us as it was too far for them to travel home for Christmas.

“One year we had a lady who lost her husband on December 24, she didn’t know how she was going to get through the following Christmas so she stayed with us,” said Christmas Dinner Coordinator Lynda Moses.

“Another time a man was driving from B.C. to Saskatchewan when his car broke down. He was staying at the Brunswick Hotel and he had not eaten for two days until he had seen our poster and he then decided to join us. He was

so grateful that he got up and mopped the floor afterwards,” said Moses.

Christmas dinner is served with all the trimmings and a wide spread of turkey, ham, meat balls and a wild meat.

“I always have a wild meat. In the past we’ve had goose, wild boar, elk, moose, deer and buffalo. I start making pies as soon as the Saskatoon berries are out in July, one week before Christmas I take them out of the freezer and cook them.”

Lynda says that this volunteer work is her life and that she gets a huge reward out of helping people.

“I fed 212 people last year. We also deliver Christmas dinners to Derwent, Minburn, Innisfree and Mannville.

“We don’t serve alcohol; turkey is a sedative enough and puts people to sleep.”

There will be entertainment at 12 noon followed by Dinner at 1 p.m. at the Vermilion Senior’s Centre.

Stanley James Weatherall (November 10, 1923 October 28, 2015) “We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.”

(2 Corinthians, 5:8) Stan came into the world in Creemore, Ontario on a cold November day in 1923, the oldest of five children born to Harold and Rita Weatherall. His siblings Maurice, Gordon, Verna and Douglas followed. Life on the farm was difficult with long days and hard work, but being a farmer was all Stan ever wanted to do.

Along with his father, Stan began farming at the age of 14 and eventually took over when Harold retired. He was a well-known and committed member of his small community of Avening where he helped with many building projects such as the Avening Hall which is still used today. He was a member of the Junior Farmers, the community bowling league and was an expert curler. He attended night school to learn the trade of carpentry and used those skills to build an addition to his home and help others with their home projects.

In 1954, Stan, Maurice and their friend, Harold Whitley, decided to explore the "wild west" and journeyed to Alberta by train to take part in a harvest excursion. Reaching Vermilion, he found a job on the farm of Randolph Hutchinson which is where he met Alberta. They married in Vermilion on November 19, 1955 and moved to the farm in Avening where they spent the next 20 years. Their children, Brent, Karen and Blair were all born in Collingwood, Ontario.

In 1975, Stan and Alberta bought the Sloan farm in Mannville. Farming in Alberta was much different than in Ontario but Stan, along with Alberta and Blair, worked hard to succeed. Again, he became a well respected and involved member of his community always willing to help others. He travelled to Ontario as often as possible to visit his family, often staying with his brother, Maurice, sitting on his porch talking and visiting for hours.

Stan slowly retired from full-time farming, turning the reins over to Blair while helping as much as he was able in his final years. Hard work, integrity and meticulousness were qualities by which he lived, and they were key to his many successes.

Stan is lovingly remembered by his wife of 59 years, Alberta, as a husband who worked hard for his family.

He will forever be cherished by his children, Brent, Karen and Blair, for being the type of father who taught them to value hard work, ethics and helping others.

His grandchildren affectionately remember his childhood stories and that he was always interested in their many activities.

As a family, we hope that Stan will be remembered as a truly kind, honest, humble Christian man who was blessed to live a long life surrounded by those people and things he cared about the most. Stan passed away suddenly at his home on his beloved farm on October 28, 2015 and now rests with his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Your work is done, it's time to rest, Those whom you touched, were truly blessed, To know a man, as fine and true, We thank thee God, for our time with you.

The family of Stan Weatherall gratefully thanks our family and friends for your many phone calls, visits, cards, donations, food and flowers. Your kindness, support and words of comfort have meant so much.

Making Christmas Like It Used To Be

Christmas has become extremely commercialized with stores beginning their Christmas season right after Halloween. Granted, it is a great marketing strategy by businesses, the earlier it is available, the more decorations people will buy as they stroll through the seasonal section.

I, for one, absolutely love Christmas and everything that goes along with the season so resisting the urge to spend copious amounts of money on decorations I don’t need is a struggle each year.

Christmas, when I was a child, was not nearly as extravagant as it is now. We would make popcorn garland and handmade ornaments for the tree, bake cookies, and cakes with my Mom. As for Christmas gifts, I can remember the smaller less expensive presents; not like the presents children receive nowa-

days, Xboxes, Ipads, and the sort.

Mom kept things pretty traditional in our house. Our house was never decorated with elaborate light displays like the ones you see today. Our house had the lights on the eaves and around the windows and maybe a few on the hedge around our lawn. My mom always said less is better than all the clutter. LOL The Christmas tree was a family event.

Bundled up in our snowsuits, we would be packed into the car and drove down the highway in the hunt for what we thought was the perfect Christmas tree.

On Christmas Eve, we would see the tree get placed into the holder and then off to bed we went. We would wake up Christmas morning to what seemed to be a magical night; our stockings were filled with a little junk food and fruit. Christmas dinner would be cooking away in the oven and on the stovetop and the morning was spent opening our few gifts and then playing endlessly with our new items. Family and friends would stop by throughout the day, and we would also be bundled up to

go and visit as well.

Christmas nowadays has become such a rat race; people are running here and running there to purchase tons of decorations, hundreds, and sometimes thousands of dollars spent on outside Christmas displays. Parents are running store to store trying to find the mile long list their children have given them to make sure they are not disappointed on Christmas morning.

Who is reaping the rewards from the Christmas madness we have all seemed to become accustomed to? The stores and credit card companies, that’s who.

Our children aren’t benefiting from receiving everything they desire. And while the Christmas displays are very pretty to look at, I wonder if we are sending the wrong message to our children. Are we teaching our children at an early age that it is okay to slide into debt just because it is Christmas and it comes just once a year?

Christmas in my eyes has lost the emotional bond it once had. Christmas used to be a time when communities had

inexpensive Christmas parties, outdoor activities for children whether it be skating on a frozen pond or sledding down the closest big hill and families spending as much time as possible with each other.

Where have our old traditions gone?

This year many families have been affected by the tremendous slow down in our economy, and while it is not a good thing, I think it gives us as parents the opportunity to break the cycle of overspending during the holidays.

My family has been affected by all of this and this year we had to sit down with our children (even though they are not little anymore) and explain that Christmas this year will not be like previous years, there won’t be a gazillion gifts under the tree. This year we will be resorting back to the older traditions. Christmas will not be about the gifts received, it will be about having our family together, and I am hoping it will be a lesson learned for all of us. Family is more important than any material item. Lets make Christmas like it used to be.

The Goodbye Game Shannon O’Connor Reporter

It was difficult for the Cusack family to say and hear the word “final” at what was the last Chris Cusack Memorial Game that took place in the Vermilion Stadium on Saturday, Dec. 5.

“It has kept Chris’s memory alive,” said Chris’s mom, Lois Cusack.

Leslie Cusack, Chris’s dad, thanked everybody in his speech following the game, for everything they’ve done to ensure the game kept going for the past 10 years.

“It’s pretty easy for us; we just show up and are amazed by all the support shown by all of you. Although this is the last official Tigers vs. Selects game being held in Christopher’s name, we know his memory will live on forever with the Selects and

the Tigers.”

“After 10 years we thought it was time to end it,” said Lois fighting back tears after the game.

The game program featured Chris smiling from ear to ear with the words, “Once a Tiger, always a Tiger,” beneath his picture.

“His big smile is what he’s known by,” said Lois who also recounted the passion Chris had for the game and the pride he had playing for the Tigers.

“He loved it and he loved everybody.”

“He was the first one in the dressing room and the last one to leave,” said Nicole, Chris’s sister.

“If he wasn’t coming home with us after the game, we would always give him a big hug before we left,” said Lois.

Leslie also acknowledged the Selects

team for travelling to Vermilion and “strapping on their skates,” each year.

“All of you have played a huge role in Christopher’s life.”

Cam Doull and Ryan Yarmuch were personally mentioned for all their efforts in continuing to make the Memorial Game a reality.

Yarmuch credited Cam and said he was the best friend Chris ever had. Cam said he would like to carry on with the Selects and continue to honour Chris’s memory.

“We as a family will support the Selects to continue to carry on his memory in some way if they choose to do so,” said Leslie.

The Selects beat the Tigers 8 to 5. The Selects, who had six players with professional hockey experience under their belt,

did not let up on the younger Tigers who seemed to rise to the occasion and were able to put some heavy pressure on the older more experienced team at certain points during the game. There was a great respect on the ice between the teams and an excellent display of sportsmanship amongst the players.

Approximately $5,500 was raised for STARS through a silent auction, a 50/50 draw and admission tickets. This total brings the amount raised for STARS over the course of the 10 year run of the Chris Cusack Memorial Game close to $95,000.

A cheque presentation to STARS will be made at a later date.

Leslie ended his speech by saying, “I would like everyone to remember to always give your kids a hug, because you never know when it may be your last.”

I sat here staring at my computer screen for what seemed to be an eternity. I wanted to write on several outdoor adventure topics, but since the loss of my beloved Miss Pickles all else is blank. I miss her more than anyone will ever know! This past week has been extremely hard on my wife Roxanne and I. I even avoided going outdoors as it made me physically ill.

I went through phases, what I was told were panic or anxiety attacks. I couldn’t eat or hold food down and had to force myself to eat, my grief overwhelmed me.

Everything reminds me of my Miss Pickles, even the snow that she loved brought me sorrow. This past weekend would have been the weekend we took our maiden voyage together with her new dog sled.

We trained together this summer and fall, and she pulled the sled all over the yard with great enthusiasm, she was excited to pull, and it was going to be part of our great outdoor adventures.

I got up with the sunrise on Saturday, November 28 and planned the day. We were low on firewood, so that was on the list, we have lots of firewood right on the property, so I took the quad out and made my way through the snow on the Pickle trails we ran.

Miss Pickles had been my helper cutting firewood since she was just a couple months old and she had been by my side every single time. I tried to cut several standing dead trees but had to quit. I kept seeing flashes out of the corner of my eye as I tried cutting firewood; I swear it was her, as when I was cutting firewood previously I knew where she was at all times.

Maybe it was just the tears, or feeling weak from not eating, combined with a huge upset stomach I had to quit for safety sake.

As I headed back home, I could imagine her leading the way as she always did.

Around The Campfire

The biggest thing that bothered me was the outdoors now seemed so lonely; I felt so isolated from the world. I didn’t realize just how much the word “companion” meant.

I thought maybe I would go to the shop and putter around in there as lots needed to get done. One of her paw prints is still on the door beside the doorknob, and it reminded me how she could let herself in by turning the doorknob faster than I could.

As I walked around inside the shop reminders were everywhere, as I tried to be productive smiles and/or a tear were constant all morning. I had to go back into the house and have a hot coffee beside the fireplace. That’s when my wife couldn’t bear to see me in this state, and said “Merry Christmas.” The picture on my phone made me say, “OH OH”…there was my early Christmas present…the cutest little girl Alaskan Malamute puppy you ever saw.

I had seen other puppy pictures this week, but none perked my interest, but this one, just by the look in her face I was instantly “twitterpated” and was smiling ear to ear.

Now it may be too early, and no pup will ever replace Miss Pickles, and I am fully aware that it would be unfair to even try to compare or expect, but I have a lot of love and companionship to offer.

I immediately began to be pulled back from the dark place I was slipping into, I could even feel the hole in my heart healing somewhat; I stared at the pup’s picture all afternoon.

We will pick her up as soon as possible, but she is not 8 weeks old yet. I would like her as soon as possible, my mind is now flooded with things to do, things to get and planning.

A suitable name is a must, but not as easy as it sounds, especially following the dog with the “bestest” name ever “Miss Pickles”…right? So the search was on.

All the traditional northern dog names just didn’t seem to cut it, and nothing

to!

However, truth be known, the real reason is Miss Oohohh made smile and say oh oh! at first look because she had that cute mischievous and adventurous face, an unexplainable instant bond.

She will be to say the least a handful, quite literally as both her parents are over 100 lbs, and she will take up a lot of time and need constant attention… thank you!

Criminal Activity In Minburn

by Canada Post employees who saw that several of their mailboxes had been pried open. Seven different mailboxes had been compromised and access was gained to their contents.

Due to increased monies and valuable goods being mailed during the holiday season, the RCMP would like

to remind residents to check their mail often in the event that mailboxes are targeted again.

The RCMP would also ask that any suspicious activity regarding mailboxes or any other property be reported immediately. Multiple vehicles nearby had gasoline siphoned from them around the

same time and it is believed that these events are related based on proximity and time-line. Physical evidence was recovered from the scene and police are still investigating. Murder in the September 12, 2012, death of Lori Ann Santos in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

In addition to O’Hagan, 29 -yearold Joshua Petrin, of Edmonton, was charged with First Degree Murder in the case of Mr. Gower’s death and is scheduled to appear for trial on February 22, 2016 in Provincial Court in Kitscoty.

No further information will be available from the RCMP on these matters.

Yes, it is a form of art you see it all around us in the newspapers, and the T.V. and yes, over the radio. You’d wonder where or how these advertisers and our politicians get the idea their baffle gab is believable.

Like, if you can’t dazzle them with your brilliance, baffle them with B.S. You know the liquid grass a bull makes in green pasture.

They never seem to know when enough is enough or when to quit trying to impress on us how wonderful their idea or whatever they’re selling is, and need to baffle us into believing their “Bafflegab�.

You know, there were folks who left crowded cities, and came out here to find new lives, and you’ve got to know they were taken in by, “Baffle Gab� and ended up settling in an alkali flat that wouldn’t grow much but foxtail and stinkweed.

You’ve all heard the “Bafflegab�, the would-be leaders indulge in when telling us with a straight face all the wonderful things they’re prepared to do with our money. You know the analogy of the beehive?

Well, if things get out of whack, the drones eat more honey then the workers can find, and the whole system begins to fail and the hive swarms. I think in our case the bureaucracy will tax all the honey out of the system so there’s nothing left for the rest of us. It’s happened in civilized society before!!

Ever hear of “Water Well Witcher�?

Well, they could tell you stories of finding water, and all the different ways that could affect the wonderful magic of their ability. I had a man who drilled wells that were so marked, and was told, “If those guys are so sure, get them to pay for the dry holes.�

All the “Baffle Gab� seems to find a

pattern of half truths and relies on their hope you don’t know any better. You need to “Trust� them. Such a sorry day when it is revealed the “Bafflegab� is simply a twisting of the truth to fit the story. That works in selling real estate and such things where telling the truth might queer a sale or stop an idea of someone getting ideas of the meaning of “Bafflegab�.

I guess old time horse traders would be able to tune some of the latter day used car salesman into changing their ways when they had unleashed the hounds of their nefarious so called modern methods of sales talk. It would be an eye opener to witness the fallout from that. Really, there isn’t anything new under the sun, as they say.

Can you imagine the boring details of a fishing or trophy hunting trip if a little “Bafflegab� wasn’t applied to the facts to liven up the story? Who’d want to hear it anyway?

In the old time of my memory, you were judged on your honesty and your word and a handshake was valued more than money or material things. The “Bafflegab� moniker on someone was an epitaph that really meant you couldn’t be trusted for anything. Substitute B.S. for that new word I crafted and it makes a lot of sense.

Years ago now, I was a hunting guide for a well known white-tail deer outfitter. There were hunters at his camps from all over the states that came up to hunt our trophies up here. On the strength of some of the stories I heard, I devised a sign for my gate to advertise my Septic Tank cleaning business. I had a big three foot square sign that stated in large letters: THIS IS THE HOME OF FRANKLIN WOLTERS. WHERE HUNTING AND FISHING STORIES ARE ALLOWED, B.S. IS FLUENTLY SPOKEN AND UNDERSTOOD. This week I watched a movie starring Al Pacino in the role of an aging rock star. It’s not his most stellar performance. His character is trapped in a loop of soulless regurgitation, stumbling through the same lacklustrous repertoire he’s performed for forty years. On his birthday, good friend and manager Frank gifts him a framed handwritten letter. The letter is from his hero, John Lennon, and was written forty years earlier but never delivered.

Quick plot summary? Pacino, whose character’s name is Danny Collins, which I just realized is probably also the name of the movie (see how we uncovered that?) is inspired to conduct a thorough review of his shallow life and in the process muses how it might have turned out if he’d received the letter sooner, like maybe in the same decade it was written. Anyway, the movie is pretty mediocre but has its moments. The soundtrack redeems it

Whenever December 8th approaches, I recall where I was at the moment I heard the bizarre news that Lennon, who dedicated so much of his life and music to advocating peace in the world, was shot dead by a lunatic on the steps of his own home.

In 1980, my friend Trish and I worked for the federal government on For t Street in Victoria. We spent our days assisting people with filing for unemployment and searching for work. It’s where I first heard about jobs like Geoduck Diver and Chicken Catcher.

Those were strange, lean times.

That winter, we both moonlighted working nights at the post office sorting Christmas mail. Trish’s roommate Barbara was the only one of the three of us who owned a car and so it was she who picked us up from the Glanford station after our shift ended. It was raining lightly, but otherwise a mild and ordinary quiet Victoria night. I sat in the back seat, relaxing into the darkness, content in the knowledge we’d have

extra cash over the holidays. The radio was playing at low volume. Everyone was tired. And then we heard the news bulletin. In those first moments, it felt as though there’d been a death in the family. Something shifted, fell away.

We didn’t speak for the rest of the drive home. What was there to say? Someone had killed a Beatle. A madman had shot John Lennon.

There are sinister events occurring in the world every day, it seems. Most times, they occur in distant places h ar m in g p e o p l e we’ve n ever m et .

Sometimes they occur in our own lives, unexpected twists of fate that shock us and alter forever the course we imagined we would follow without obstacle.

All these events affect us in some way; it’s just a matter of degree.

Like the floundering Danny Collins in the movie, we think wistfully sometimes about what might have been possible if that one event would----or wouldn’t have occurred. If the world had shifted one way instead of another. If we’d been able to sidestep the wrecking ball.

Danny Collins wondered if he’d have

found the courage to remain true to his original principles if he’d received the letter from Lennon inviting him to meet up for a ‘talk’. He might have benefitted from Lennon’s advice about how to navigate life on his own terms despite the surrealities fame offers instead of becoming a caricature of himself.

It’s a discouraging moment when someone, anyone, living a productive life is taken out for reasons that, no matter how hard we try, we can neither understand nor reconcile. I guess we’ve little choice but to gather the fragments and attempt in the best way we can to step forward, to continue to believe that good will somehow always prevail over the bad.

I usually play Imagine. It’s a hopeful tune, if impossibly utopic. I play it in memory of the man who gave it to us, who dared challenge us to believe in the possibility of peaceful coexistence, to consider love. I play it in honour of every precious life taken by the scourge of violence that, sadly, continues to rage in every corner of our mad, troubled, beautiful world. It’s something.

Vermilion Area Christmas Bird Count Set for This Year

The Vermilion River Naturalist Societ y’s annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is set for Saturday, December 19th. There will also be a Christmas Bird Count for Kids (CBC4Kids) in the afternoon in the Provincial Park.

The Christmas Bird Count is the longest running wildlife census, and the oldest citizen science survey, in North America. The count was started over 100 years ago by the National Audubon Society in the United States, and in Canada is co-ordinated by Bird Studies Canada. The annual count occurs between mid-December and early Januar y, and the goals of the Count are to engage citizens in gathering important bird population information, and to foster an interest in conservation. Data collected by field

counters and feeder watchers helps to provide an understanding of bird population trends across North America in early winter. The count also provides an enjoyable social experience – tens of thousands of birdwatchers participate in this event each year.

The Vermilion River Naturalist Society (VRNS) is hoping to get many field counters and feeder observers for the day. The count takes place within a 12 km radius of the Town of Vermilion, and our field counters cover four quadrants: outside of the Town of Vermilion, in Town, the Provincial Park, the College grounds, and the River Valley.

Field counters drive as many roads as possible, and try to visit farm yards, building sites, and other areas where birds may be found. Feeder counts, which can even be done from your window for as little as 15 minutes, are

also very important for the day — many unusual species are found at feeders.

Last year, we had 24 field counters and nine feederwatchers who counted m o r e t h a n 1, 8 0 0 i n d i v i d u a l b i r d s representing 28 species in the Vermilion count area. There can never be too many counters in one quadrant, but we try to place an experienced birder on each team. In fact, with the short days in December, it is a scramble to cover all the roads and farms in a quadrant.

So, if you want to join in we can really use the help (even a few hours), and young enthusiasts are most welcome!

Vermilion residents can get involved in the Christmas Bird Count by counting the birds at their backyard feeders, and even the pigeons and House Sparrows that frequent your yard even if you don’t have feeders. Please submit your sightings to the Naturalist Society at any of

the contacts below. You can also help just by welcoming the field counters who might come to your door and helping them with their survey.

It ’s been the Naturalist Society’s tradition to end the day with a festive potluck, where we enjoy good food a n d g o o d c o m p a ny w h i l e o u r o u r compiler sorts through the data we’ve collected.

1/4 cup boiling water 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 package of cream cheese (at room temperature) Beat the whipping cream with the sugar until like soft whipped cream; in a small bowl soften the gelatin in the 1/4 cup water and then stir in the 1/4 cup boiling water. Beat in the cream cheese, gelatin mixture and vanilla into the whipped cream. Pour this mixture on the crust and allow chilling for several hours until set.

Cranberry Topping 1 bag of cranberries 340 grams 12 oz 3 cups 1 cup of water

1/2 cup sugar 1 cup applesauce 1 pkg gelatin 1 mandarin orange, peeled and cut into small pieces.

In a small pot cook the cranberries in the water until many are softened, add the sugar and continue to cook for several minutes longer, stirring. Soften the gelatin in 1.4 cup water stirring then add ¼ cup boiling water. Stir the gelatin mixture and the apple sauce into the cranberries. Stir the mandarin orange gently in. Spread the mixture on the top of the whipped layer and allow chilling in your refrigerator until set.

• Know your spending limit. Lack of money is one of the biggest causes

of stress during the holiday season. This year, set a budget and don’t spend more than you’ve planned.

• Give something personal. You can show love and caring with any gift that is meaningful and personal. Make a phone call or write a note and share your feelings.

Remember, get help if you need. Holidays can be especially hard if you are already dealing with the death of a loved one or the breakup of a relationship. Talk with a health care professional in your area or call the Mental Health Helpline 1-877-303-2642.

Wildlife Warning - The Season To Be Wary

Every year in Canada moose and deer collisions are the cause of thousands of road accidents according to Transport Canada, Road Safety Directorate.

Colliding with these animals, particularly deer and moose, can be potentially fatal for passengers or is likely to cause significant damage to your car and to the animals.

If you want to avoid a moose or deer collision, you have to stay alert this season and know what to do if you come head-to-head with one.

Canada Safety Council advises if an animal is in your path, brake firmly but do not swerve to avoid it. Sound your horn in a series of short bursts to frighten it away.

Provided you can slow down with control, steer around the animal but stay on the highway. Watch out for oncoming traffic.

Drive at a safe speed.

Do not speed when you are driving through moose or deer country. You›ll still arrive if you drive more slowly and you›ll have more time to avoid an animal if you spot it. Wildlife experts have recommended 90 kph/55 mph as a suitable speed for wildlife zones in good weather conditions, as it provides you with some reaction time to stop.

Drive defensively.

Be prepared to take action, which includes being able to quickly slow down, brake suddenly or turn down blinding headlights. Drive so that you are able to stop within the space of your headlights; practice this in a safe area if you don’t know how fast this is for your vehicle.

Make sure you wear your seat belt and check that all passengers are wearing theirs too.

If you see one deer or moose, there are likely to be more deer or moose nearby, even if you don’t see them. If you see one creature, it’s more likely that you’ll run into more.

Slow down when other cars behave differently. If you see flashing or hazard lights up ahead or hear tooting horns or see people waving madly, slow down and be ready to stop!

Innisfree Holds Extravagant Christmas

The fifth annual Innisfree Extravagant Spirit of Christmas Trade and Craft show and sale offered shoppers a chance to pick up a few gifts for everyone on their holiday shopping list. Maryann Berg

has been hosting the event at the Innisfree Rec Centre which saw more than 30 vendors participate this year. From handmade scarves to wood working and baked goods and preserves, there was no shortage of items available for purchase.

What Christmas Means to Me?

Nahanni – Grade 3 Christmas is a special time where my family and me celebrate. My little sister and I decorate the tree with special ornaments of our family! Sometimes we visit our Nana and Papa for Christmas. We might go skating and we are helping our papa in his workshop. Nana and I might bake sugar cookies and biscuits. On Christmas Eve I get excited because Santa comes and brings my little sister and me presents. In the backyard my sister and I make giant piles of snow and then make tunnels and door, roofs too and walls. Then it equals a snow fort. In Brownies we painted jars with reindeer, and snowmen on them then we gave them to people at the lodge. I bet they enjoyed them!

Rhyan – Grade 3 My family and I get together on Boxing Day. I play Mini Stick hockey with my cousins. My grandma buys us all new P.J.’s every year. At the start of December my “Elf on the Shelf” comes back and watches us. On Christmas Ever we go to midnight mass. Like everyone we give the reindeer food like carrots. Every year we go to the Santa Skate. This year I get to help out by pulling little kids in sleds on the ice.

The Town of Vermilion is continuing to build on their efforts to make positive changes and provide healthy food options at the Vermilion Stadium concession.

It is an effort that has resulted in the Town of Vermilion securing an award from Communities ChooseWell, an initiative of the Alberta Recreation and Parks Association (ARPA) that promotes and supports the development of community programs, policies and partnerships that create wellness through healthy eating and active living “We have been recognized for ‘Developing Healthy Policies’,” said Director of Community Services for the Town of Vermilion, Shawn Bell.

ChooseWell, and the Town of Vermilion was one of 20 winners in seven different categories.

“Among other things, we were recognized specifically for our work on trying to make healthy choices available at our recreation centre.”

The Town has made it a policy in the concession contract that healthy options are made available, and works with a dietician from AHS in menu selections.

is a work in progress, and must strike a balance between providing healthy choices and making a profit for the concession operator (Vermilion Minor Hockey).

Typically healthy food is a little more costly, said Bell, but the concession operator has the ability to set their own prices.

“They could drop the price of healthy options and increase the price of the unhealthy options. That would help in making the decision to choose healthy eating a bit easier,” said Bell. “ We keep working with them,” he added. “If you want a burger you can still have a burger. We just want to make healthy options available. The Stadium is a wellness centre.”

Wraps, homemade soup, grilled cheese sandwiches and providing water as a primary beverage are some of the options that are available at the concession stand, said Bell.

“We’ll introduce fruits and vegetables on a trial basis. We’ll see what kind of response we get. We have to stick it out as habits take a while to change.”

Bell said they are receiving some positive feedback. Approximately 86 per cent of concession users surveyed in the fall said eating healthy is important.

“We are seeing change, but it’s a slow process.”

The Town was also recognized by Communities ChooseWell for officially declaring the first Saturday in June as National Health and Fitness Day.

Hills said any loss can be debilitating, including employment, health, relationships and the death of loved ones.

Brenda Bean performed a piercingly clear solo called “Still Christmas” that encapsulated the sentiment that offers permission for people to feel sad during Christmas.

The Reverend Harvey Hussey (Glad Tidings Pentecostal) shared a story of a young man who had lost his father, but had not grieved his passing.

Hussey said even just speaking your loved one’s name aloud can begin the grieving process. He also advised not to

pretend everything is all right, when it isn’t.

Representatives from both Crossroads and Lakeland Funeral Homes, helped usher people to their seats and assisted them with lighting their memorial candles, while Lynda Moses offered those in attendance a “God’s eye” ornament made by loving hands to help comfort people through their loss.

Jim Tovell performed a gentle solo rendition of “O Holy Night” and the Cantata Choir filled the room with their booming voices during their performance of “Set Us Free”.

The service concluded with a blessing from Rev. Mark Murray (St. Saviour’s).

Refreshments, provided by the participating churches, were offered in the Church Hall following the service.

A new municipal mobile phone App which will feature events that are going on in the county was also approved funding for $7,000 at Town Council on December 1.

Investigation into the company FaveQuest who develops MyEvent Apps were favourable. Community Economic Development Coordinator Prior told Council that Economic Development would like to purchase the three year App license for a SuperApp with FaveQuest for $7000.

Prior said the App would be called ‘MyVermilion’ and that it would become a host to all of Vermilion’s ser vice clubs and organizations events including The Good Life Institute.

“It will be a three year rental. There w i l l b e a m a p w h e r e yo u c a n p i n point locations,” Prior told Council on December 1.

“The Ag committee will keep their App, this will be a separate App but we have the possibility to link from our App to theirs,” said Prior.

Trails of glitter line Dewberry School’s hallways, fill the classrooms and shine in the abilities of all who demonstrate the desire to improve. With accomplishments like the ones we’ve been observing that trail of glitter will continue to shine into the horizon for all to see and remember for a long time.

Over the last few weeks, these twinkling stars were recognized for their many achievements. One such event, Citizenship Award ceremony, saw students receiving recognition for leadership skills, perfect attendance, and volunteerism. It’s amazing to see these wonderful students stepping up to help out other members of the school and community. They encompass the qualities we envision our future leaders to possess.

Daneca Goldsmith was presented with the LW Kruger award. She received this award for obtaining the highest average in high school. Fantastic job, Daneca!! Keep up the excellent work.

Volleyball season may be over but the members of the senior volleyball teams still shimmer with their recent endeavors.

The AR class challenges were set, and students worked hard to attain their reading goals! Students who were successful in meeting their reading goal were able to style their teacher’s hair! They came up with some very interesting and glamorous styles, which the teachers sported for the majority of the day. All students who reached the class goal, had their names put in a draw, and the winners were part of team that style our guest. Mr. Myhovich from Credit Union, joined in on the fun, and was “glittering” with excitement!

December’s class reading goals have been set, and students are eagerly reading in order to have some special elves deliver cookies and hot chocolate to them on the 18!

During the month of December, the secondary student’s union has plans to sell candy grams. They will also be planning another Spirit Week in December to include Candy Guess, Ho Ho Ho Trivia, Wrap-aFriend, Christmas Dress Up, and lastly, an activity day in our PJ’s. Thank you for help-

School students and staff were thrilled to get back into the high school end of the school on Wednesday. The rooms looked amazing, as Ernie and Dorothy Decker have been working extremely hard to get the rooms ready for the high school. The colors of the new floor and lockers look fabulous and all the new furniture adds to the newness of the renovations. The Grade 1 to Grade 4 classes have now been dispersed throughout the school as it is their turn to have renovations done on their rooms.

Biology 20 and Biology 30 students had an interesting time on Tuesday last week. They worked in groups of three dissecting piglets as part of their studies.

Terry Fox continues to be a beacon of hope for thousands of Canadians.

Dewberry School is proud to maintain their involvement in the annual Terry Fox Run. Not only do the staff and students support this event but the community provides backing financially, emotionally and physically (walking/running with the students).

Without them, they would not be able to raise the funds they do. Grade 4 student, Jillian Stevenson, received a t-shirt for her efforts as the top fundraiser for this year’s event. You sparkle, girl!!

Dewberry Parent Council assists the school throughout the year by raising money to help subsidize field trips, swimming programs, and updating some playground and sports equipment. They are an important silent partner that helps make some of these things possible. How do they do this? It is done by organizing events such as: biweekly pizza sales, fruit sales, etc. The fruit sales brought in some more funds and students that were able to sell 12 or more items were recognized and awarded movie passes. Congratulations to these shining star sellers: Cash Bowman, Jelena, Laramie and Presley Parr, Rhett Romanchuk, Keyauna Parr, Mason and Remington Oneschuk and Emily and Trenton Fluney.

The school body gathered in the gym to acknowledge the accomplishments of our many fine Jr. and Sr. High athletes that have participated in school sports this fall. The Golf teams, the Cross Country Running team, Football players and the Volleyball teams were all introduced and a PowerPoint highlighted a variety of moments from this year. The Sr. High Girls and Boys Basketball teams were given a big cheer as they started their season with the St. Jerome’s home tournament this weekend. Students were able to watch the girls play at 12:00 followed by the boy’s team at 1:45 Jr. High Basketball teams have started their seasons as they participate in a weekly league. The Jr. Boys played very well coming out strong and playing as a team to defeat Paradise Valley. The Grade 6/7 Girls played very well considering it was a first game for some of the girls, but they were unable to come home with the victory.

Please remind your children to dress appropriately for the winter conditions. Most bus drivers will accept children bringing their winter mitts, toques, and boots with them in their back pack, but they must carry them with them if they are not going to wear them. It is important that students dress for the cold as it is a very real safety concern if they are not.

For gym our Kindergarten students will be learning how to skate! The first two visits to the arena were on their own, learning how to fall down, get up and balance on their blades. They would appreciate as much help as they can get with 26 kinders slipping and sliding and trying to put on skates!

Several of them are independent skaters, but our first time skaters will pick it up fast!

The students are excited to share this year’s concert, “We Three Spies” with their families and they have been working diligently remembering their lines, learning the songs and dance moves. Come out for a wonderful show, which shared the true meaning of Christmas.

High School students will be participating in “The Five Days of Christmas” from Monday, December 14 – Friday, December 18. On Friday they will share “Warm Fuzzies” and an “Ethnic Potluck Lunch”.

Last week’s talent show, VIBErations, was simply jaw-dropping! With Grade 10 student Parker Carlson as Master o f C e r e m o n i e s , s eve r a l s t u d e n t s performed in the show. Wyatt Richardson (Grade 8) set the bar high when he opened the show with his electric guitar riffs, Dane Dillon transformed from a quiet Grade 8 boy to confident beatboxer. Grade 7s Monica Hobbis and Ryley Schreyer sang, Tristen Ahlgren (Grade 9) and Julie Newberry (Grade 8) performed a comedy skit, Jon Macdonald and Emerson Livingstone (both Grade 11) performed a piano and singing duet, Crimson and Sierra Haslehurst (Grade 11 and 12) performed a sisterly dance duet, Grade 7 duo Victoria Adrian and Victoria Newberry sang together, and Ismael Udden (Grade 9) surprised everyone with his hidden musical talents as he played flute and played piano. We had our last 2015 assembly on Dec. 2. Mrs. Webb reviewed what WITS (walk away, ignore, talk about it, seek help) means, and she discussed being the best we can be and displaying it at the Christmas concerts. Mrs. Tomkins was very proud of the students who have made their AR goals and she said that VES has collectively accumulated 7582 AR points.

Grade 6 participated in their annual Christmas carolling around town on Dec. 2. They started at Vermilion Valley Lodge, which was the kids’ favourite part of the carolling. Next, they went downtown and stopped at Long’s, Craig’s, and Apple Drugs. Then they headed back to the school for hot chocolate and treats.

Thank you to Nick, who drove the bus that transported them around town, Pam, who prepared the hot chocolate and had the snacks ready to go, and the parents and volunteers that supported this Grade 6 carolling group.

The STAA Flashing Red Light Awareness Committee is embarking on initiatives to raise the awareness of the flashing red lights on school buses. In an effort to assist them with tracking the effects of the awareness campaign, they would like to survey the public to determine the level of awareness that currently exists. The survey will run for 30 days, staring mid-November and

ending December 15th. They would greatly appreciate if parents could do the survey.

VIL Hosts Holiday In The Hallway

Christmas music filled the halls of the Innisfree Millennium Building as the Village of Innisfree Library held its annual Holiday in the Hallway on the evening of November 25.

The silent auction kept bidders on their toes as the various items were pulled from the auction at various times throughout the evening, all donated from individuals and businesses from the area.

Three volunteers were also recognized for their hours spent and commitment to the library. Brandon Potschka, Kristin Bergman and Vera Spurr all received certificates of recognition from board member Holly Cependa.

There was no shortage of holiday cheer at the annual Holiday in the Hallway and visitors came away with a sense of a kickstart to the holiday with their items won in the auction.

Enviro Club Raising Bat Profile On Campus

More mosquitoes and less tequila could be the case if bat populations c o nt i n u e to d e c l i n e, a c c o r d i n g to members of Lakeland College’s Enviro Club.

“Bats actually save millions of dollars in agriculture every year because they are a huge source of natural pest control,” says Tessa McQuaid, firstyear student in the wildlife and fisheries conservation major. “By saving them, not only are you reducing the amount of money spent in agriculture, which is hugely beneficial, you are also reducing the amount of pesticide used, which is affecting the environment and water systems.

“There would be less if any tequila too because bats are the prime pollinator of the agave plant,” she adds.

The Enviro Club launched a new campaign this year in support of bats and bees. Their goal is to combat misconceptions about bats this semester – which ranges from bloodsucking to rabies-infected creatures – and raise awareness about their plight. “ Sur pr i s in g ly t h e ir num b er s are becoming decimated in Canada due to various factors,” says Katie Harris, second-year conservation and restoration ecology major and club president. From loss of habitat to white nose syndrome – a lethal fungus affecting bats in eastern Canada that’s spread-

ing westwards – bats are struggling to survive in Canada.

“An estimated 99 per cent of little brown bats have been lost in New Brunswick due to white nose syndrome, and it is expected to spread across Canada in approximately 12 years,” adds McQuaid. “Half of the world’s bat species are listed as threatened on the endangered species list.”

The Enviro Club fundraised for the small mammal and shared bat facts on Oct. 30 at the Vermilion campus. Funds raised will either go towards sponsoring a bat or s u p p o r t i n g r e s e ar c h.

They built bat houses on Dec. 3, five of which will be donated to Dillberr y L ake Provincial Park.

“They have a big bat population – a roost – that nests in a building and it is being torn d ow n,” s ays H ar r i s , adding the other bat houses will be installed on college land. The club also plans on visiting a local elementar y school to share a p r e s e nt at i o n a b o u t bats.

Next semester, the Enviro Club will shift its focus to bees, whose population is also declining. Harris says the club plans on sharing a presentation about bats and bees for the college

and the community in the new year. As a member of the Town of Vermilion’s environment committee, Harris says she wants to help with the community’s pollinator garden too. “ We want to raise awareness so that people can be proactive and take steps to support this cause,” she says.

Learn To Skate And Pond Hockey At Myrnam Arena Soon

Although the weather has been rather mild this past November that hasn’t stopped the learn to skate and pond hockey program in Myrnam. The natural ice is being flooded at the Myrnam arena and the starting date for the learn to skate and pond hockey programs is set to begin in January of the new year.

Since its inception a number of years ago Dennis Machney has been the main organizer of both programs, having been a coach for his sons as they were growing up and playing hockey himself as a child and young man. He still continues to play for the Myrnam Crooked Shooters hockey club, os has another reason to look forward to ice being ready at the arena. Glenn Hladunewich has also been an intricate part in the organization of the learn to skate program. Many other members of the community, including parents and high school students have contributed to the overall success of this

program.

The program is for kids aged 2 years old and older, up until their late teens.

According to Dennis, “It is a program that has several levels and does not only gear towards beginner skaters. There are different sections so that advanced can be in one area and the first timers can be at the other end of the ice. We’ve had as much as 4 different levels going at the same time.” He was quick to add that, “It is not just for beginners, it incorporates hockey skills as well that translate well to games and team play. So everyone has something that they can learn.”

In the past years the program has been run on Tuesday evenings, and it is their intention to continue that tradition.

The pond hockey program will run on Wednesdays, as it has in former years.

It is designed to be for children aged 5 to 6 and older. It is required that the participants have basic hockey equipment in order to play.

Vermilion Continuing Care Christmas Fundraiser

Fundraiser organizers Paulette and Glenn Eaket sold poinsettia wreaths and planters for the Vermilion Continuing Care Christmas Fundraiser at the Vermilion Continuing Care Centre on December 4. ”There has been great feedback to the fundraiser to date. All the flowers were pre sold and then delivered from Lethbridge. People have been dropping by all day to collect their flowers and plants,” said organizer Glenn Eaket.

All proceeds from the fundraiser go to the Vermilion Continuing Care Comfort Fund. The proceeds are used to fund programs for the elderly residents of the nursing home.

Innisfree Folk Get Pot Lucky

As it is with every year about this time the senior citizens of Innisfree held their annual pot luck supper for the people of Innisfree and the surrounding area. With dishes ranging from an assortment of cooked vegetables to meatballs in a delicious mushroom sauce to Caesar salad with a strong garlic taste, as well as a lovely fruit punch to wash it all down, the guests were going up for seconds and some even thirds!

It was a nice evening of catching up with old friends and talking of plans played out in the past year as well as upcoming plans for the New Year.
