This will be the tenth and final year of the Chris Cusack Memorial Hockey Game.

“I have mixed emotions,” said Cam Doull, Chris’s friend, former teammate and one of the Memorial Game’s organizers. “We’ve had a lot of success over the years.”

Chris Cusack, passed away at the age of 22 on September 18, 2005, as the result of a fall down stairs the day before.

A memorial hockey game was started for him the following year; a game that has raised close to $90,000 for STARS in the past nine years.

“It’s a real testament to who Chris was and the game he loved to play the most,” added Doull. “But I understand the decision to make this the final game. I think part of the reason was the strong connection that was on the ice in the beginning, is lost now with some of the younger Tigers players,” he added.

The Memorial Game began as an exhibition tournament in 2006, and evolved into the Chris Cusack Memorial Game that has had the Selects playing the Vermilion Jr. B Tigers for the past three years. Chris played for the Tigers for four years, and was team Captain for three.

“Ryan (Yarmuch) and I decided to get more involved around 2012 and formed the Chris Cusack Selects.”

The Selects’ line-up has varied from year to year, but at their core they are a group of players who have played

with Chris at some point during his hockey career, from the minor leagues up to the university level.

“We could create two teams with all of Chris’ friends. Chris was the type of person that he would be doing this for somebody else. It’s the way he was raised,” said Doull referring to Chris’ parents, Leslie and Lois Cusack. They, along with Chris’ sister Nicole, have supported the Memorial game from its inception.

President of the Vermilion Tigers, Ray Bourner said Chris’ legacy as an integral part of the Tigers team and as a natural leader on and off the ice remains.

“That’s how Durwin Selte remembers him,” said Bourner.

“It was a tough decision to make,” added Bourner referring to the upcoming final game. “But it was one everyone was on board with. It’s bittersweet to end this chapter.”

Bourner said Doull and Yarmuch have created a stellar line-up of players for this final game, including two former NHL players, Jeff Woywitka and Grant McNeill, who are both originally from Vermilion.

“We may have a few other surprises too,” added Bourner.

Doull said that the community of Vermilion has played a big role in supporting the event year after year.

“Even in hard times, like now, people will still show up and support it.”

ion Stadium. Tickets are $7 (Adults), $4 (Youth), $2 (Children), and admission is free for 6 and under. Auction items will also be available to bid on. All proceeds will go to STARS Air Ambulance.

Although this will be the final year that the Chris Cusack Selects will face off against the Vermilion Junior B Tigers, Doull said it doesn’t mean the Cusack Selects will not play again.

“Chris had such a good heart. We’ve always done this in the right mindset,” said Doull. “It is not a burden to us at all.”

Christmas spirit was in full swing at the ‘Savor’ event on Friday, November 27 as guests mingled cheerfully and sampled a wide variety of quality Scotch, beer and wines paired with exquisite appetizers. The Elks Hall was sold out as it catered to a crowd of over 200 people.

“I feel we have a success on our hands,” said Good Life Institute Coordinator Colleen Berg. “We’ve had so much success that we’re running out of glasses.”

It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas

It is like the song g o e s “ I t ’s b e g i n ning to look a lot like Christmas, ever yw h e r e y o u g o.” I think that is how our little town of Vermilion is beginning to look.

The Christmas tree is up in the park

just down from the office, Christmas baskets hanging from the lit street lamps; with one hanging just outside my window that I very much enjoy gazing at now and then while sitting in the office doing my work. Stores along the street have their Christmas decorations up; which reminds me this week we need to take a day or evening and get our window decorated for the holidays as well. But Thursday evening I think was

the true start of the Christmas season.

Nothing says Christmas more than a parade, a festival of trees and a hallway of handicrafts.

This year we par ticipated in the parade, and I have to say our float turned out much better than I ever expected!! The vision in my head for the last two months didn’t quite happen, but one thing for sure, it would never have happened at all without the help

of a very special family and a couple other businesses in town. I think this is the perfect opportunity to say a HUGE thank you to them.

To the Garcia family, who trustingly let their little children participate in our float in their exceptionally made minion costumes we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Without your little ones, our float would have been a disaster.

Heather (Jacks Auto Detailing) let’s face it, without all the help you gave us by loaning us your trailer, shop space and anything else we needed, our float would never have been. Greg (Tim Hortons) without you loaning us your generator and trailer hitch there would have been no lights or the ability to move the trailer that had our float on top of it. Jacob (my son), thank you for taking the time to drive us through town in the parade after just leaving work for the day. You froze your bum off driving with all the windows down in the truck so our “Rocking Around The Christmas Tree” song could be heard by the parade goers after the stereo decided not to work from the cold. You could have said shag this and left us there. LOL Everyone here at The Voice would like to express our thanks and appreciation to all of you. It was amazing!

The Vermilion Voice may have won 2nd place in the parade, but in my eyes and I am sure in the eyes of our publisher and co- workers it was a 2nd place win for all who were involved not just us.

There is a lesson to be learned from all of this. It doesn’t matter who you are or if you are different businesses, working together as a team to make something a success will always result in success! We were united, and isn’t that what the season is all about? Helping each other, caring for each other and coming together. I think so!

To date, for the month of November, 2015, Vermilion RCMP has responded to 180 calls for service. Of those, 62 are traffic related (including 6 for impaired driving), 40 are property crimes, 15 are crimes against people, 14 are false alarms, and 9 other calls for service.

During this time, at least 27 criminal code charges and 17 Provincial (tickets)

On November 23, 2015 at approximately 8:05 a.m. a blue Dodge truck entered a rural property south of Lloydminster, Alberta. The vehicle drove up to the shop, backed out and then left to the second entrance of the property. The second entrance had a gate with a heavy chain locking it. The truck rammed the

On November 9, 2015 at approximately 2:00 in the morning, the Kitscoty RCMP responded to an alarm at D&D Groceries in Marwayne, Alberta.

The culprits used a pickup truck to back into the building and smash the doors. Two suspects wearing masks

Flapper Pie is a uniquely Alberta and Saskatchewan prairie pie. It is a recipe that turns basic ingredients into a light and elegant desert. It is a vintage recipe that was served in cafes and homes all across the prairies.

This recipe began in the early 1900’s and continued as a favourite until the 1970’s.

The introduction of little boxes of Jello pie filling, and women entering the work force caused the shift away from home cooked custard pies. Flapper pie is one of the pies I remember my mom making. Perhaps you remember your mom or grandmother making it?

Banana Flapper Pie

Apparently the recipe at one time was printed on the graham wafer box. In those days almost everything cooked was made from scratch. Advantages to the return to home baking include the elimination of food additives and control over the amount of sugar and the quality of the fat in your products. It can also be made with a traditional pie crust instead of the graham wafer crumb crust. Using brown sugar in the crust is particularly nice.

Flapper Pie contains protein from the eggs and milk which will help balance the carbohydrates. To make the original recipe, eliminate the banana. You can also add sliced bananas, placed on top of the pie crust, and then pour the banana filling on top. The difference between this pie and a banana cream pie it that the cream pie is topped with whipped cream, and the flap-

Banana Flapper Pie Crust 1 cup graham wafer crumbs ¼ cup melted butter 1 tablespoon sugar (white or brown) Melt the butter and then stir in the remaining ingredients. Reserve 2 tablespoons of this mixture. Press into a 9 inch pie plate.

Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes Filling 2 cups milk 2 tablespoons cornstarch plus 1 teaspoon cornstarch 3 egg yolks 1/3 cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 ripe mashed banana

Combine all the ingredients except the butter into a heavy bottomed pot. Cook on medium low heat, stirring with a whisk until thickened. Stir in the butter and then pour into the prepared pie crust.

Meringue 3 egg whites 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar (optional) Combine the ingredients and beat with an electric beater until the eggs form soft peaks. For successful meringue be sure that there is absolutely no egg yolk in the egg white mixture. It is also useful to know that the egg white will whip up better at room temperature. Top the filling with the meringue. Sprinkle on the reserved graham crumb mixture and bake at 400 degrees for five minutes until lightly browned. Allow the pie to fully cool before slicing.

ESL Rhyme And Read Receives Funding

CLASS would like to acknowledge the funding given by the following contributors for their Newcomers to Canada programming. Carol Coleman represents the Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) and the Newcomer’s Advisory Committee (NAC) which gave to the English Language Family Rhyme and Read Program. FCSS gave $1700 for the 2015 program and $2540 for 2016 programming. The Newcomer Advisory Committee gave $551 for this family based English Language program that will develop interpersonal and group skills which enhance constructive relationships among English Language Learners and help sustain them as active participants in the community. It will also build English language skills as they sing and say poems together. Parenting skills, dietary and social skills will be discussed and taught to help Newcomers adjust to their new life in Canada. This funding will be matched with the Community Initiative Program Grant that was given in April of 2015 by the Provincial Government.

When I was a youngster there seemed to be many different jobs and they seemed to have several degrees of tedium just naturally

I can recall long rows of garden vegetables, especially the carrots that were, to put it mildly, tedious as all hell to weed remember? That garden chore really took the cake, as they used to say, but there were certainly more than a few more almost as bad!! Take your pick.

Let’s say fixing a fence on a hot, windless day in a coulee full of hills to struggle up and down, and did the day seem long and tedious? If you’d been there I’m sure you’d remember, right?

Yes, some of those jobs like pickin’ rocks and that job of stooking with the endless bending and walking did get tedious to a degree, but you were at least outside and able to breathe fresh air and enjoy nature somewhat.

I guess we have the choice of jobs to some degree and people of the soil in early times had so many hats to wear, there was always different jobs for all the seasons.

How about if you did the same job endlessly no matter the time of year?

Bring any jobs to mind? Like a job that entails being lined up to a computer staring endlessly into a screen and having your hand and wrist get carpel tunnel from endless repetition day after day, month on month. I think I’ll take the pickin’ rocks, and fixin’ fence once in a while.

I knew a man who worked in a gravel pit that was used to supply rock gravel to stockpile for summer use. All winter his truck travelled from pit to stockpile less than a mile away. The route and scenery would never change unless he moved to another pit. Some kind of tedious you think?

I think of all the tedious things I can remember were these seemingly endless school days and the trudging through the snow to get there in winter. Thank goodness we could at least play ball in the spring and fall to hold back the tedious

hours of school time.

I wonder though now, how tedious it will be to have our tractors, swathers, and combines that will drive themselves and all you have to do is sit idly by and ride herd with nothing much to do. I can’t even imagine something THAT tedious!!

Yes, everyone can look at the folks around them and wonder how they manage to do their tedious tasks, when if you study their lives you find they are doing even more of those very same things as their sole means of support!!

I remember thinking in the old times how I’d rather be working indoors then freezing out there digging feed from hay and straw piles, and the usually long trails we travelled hauling it home. Yes that was tedious, but now I think that a lot of jobs inside like our nurses and folks who endlessly wait on people and do the same cleaning chores day after day for a life. Damn, that must be tedious personified for sure!!

A job that would really frazzle me would be doing books or being an accountant.

I think you’d really like to shuffle paper and all related things to that chore to keep

They say flying a light plane is hours and hours of tedium punctuated by seconds of pure terror if things happened to make trouble. I flew a little but, had very few instances of the terror as I remember.

You’d wonder at long distant truckers not getting bored when they travelled across seeming endless prairie, hour after hour and day after day, as they travel back and forth across the country. That would take special people, you think!!

I really was happy farming and having a variety of work that took an effort to keep up with the different challenges and know most importantly when it was time to do them. That beats knowing when you head out to work and have an hour or so of traffic to wend your way to work every day and then do the same-old, same-old for the day and battle traffic on the way back to your nest.

It’s a wonder the mental hospitals and psychiatrists aren’t overloaded with all the resulting victims of the tedious way of city life!! That so called “Rat Race”.

Temple Grandin is considered the world’s most accomplished and widely known adult with autism. She is the keynote speaker to open the 8th annual conference on Autism, Wednesday, January 20 to Friday, January 22, 2016.

Parents of children with autism and professionals who work with them can participate through Telehealth in Vermilion, one of more than 30 communities expected to link in.

Thursday’s keynote is Dr. Barry Prizant, internationally renowned consultant and scholar, who speaks of changing perceptions about people with autism. His new book “Uniquely Human” is about building on strengths and seeking to understand what underlies behaviour.

Other presenters include motivational speaker Michael “Pinball” Clemons, and a panel of adults with autism, sharing their personal perspectives. Rounding out the program are cutting-edge researchers and expert clinicians addressing medical issues in autism, transition to adulthood, employment, feeding, peer interactions,

routine-based interventions, and more.

The three-day conference is hosted by Children’s Autism Services of Edmonton.

I begin in a sitting position, reading my book and listening to music.

Yes, at the same time.

It’s what I do to block out all sound except my own. I write in my journal for awhile. Right hand, then left. They have different priorities. I eat every one of the mints I have in my pocket. That’s why I hardly ever buy them, rolled candy or mints I mean. I just eat them one after another until they’re all gone. I still have two packs of lozenges (one cherry, one lemon) in my backpack but I resist starting on those. I know if I start, I won’t stop until there’s nothing left but the wrappers.

Three young women sit a few rows away. As the airport empties, you always know who’s not going anywhere for awhile.

It’s like a nesting ritual. You survey. Rear-

range your belongings. You stake out a space knowing that later you’ll be stretching out into it. Sleep helps pass the hours of a long layover.

One of the women is coughing. I hear her even with my headphones on, that’s how bad it is. I try to block it out but it’s a hacker of a thing. There’s only a few seconds between each coughing fit. It sounds painful. Lemon or cherry, I consider. Then I get up, walk over and offer her the cherry ones. I can’t explain why I’m giving away the flavour I like best but she accepts so gratefully that it doesn’t matter. One less packet I’ll be tempted to consume. She smiles, says ‘Danke’ and something else I don’t understand. I smile with empathy and respond, then return to my seat. The lozenges don’t cure her but seem at least to give some relief.

position across three seats. It’s alright for awhile. If you’re tired enough, sleep comes even in the absence of feather pillow and duvet. Imagination helps. Backpack = Pillow. Sweater = Blanket. Odd dreams ensue.

I’m awakened just before a snarling winged white poodle leaps out a window in pursuit of twin ravens dressed in yellow jumpers with bright red suspenders. I ought to thank the sleep disrupter.

He comes in the form of a friendly maintenance worker dressed in orange coveralls riding a matching orange Zamboni floor cleaner. Well, it looks like a Zamboni. I sit up and watch as he leans into the turns and guides the machine between the pillars at the centre of the corridor, then deftly turns its bulk between each row of seats. The whole spectacle is a performance of grace infused industrial efficiency. The workman nods and smiles when I catch his eye. It’s 2:30 a.m.

He disappears into the depths of the Terminal for awhile, leaving the spaces where sleepy travelers occupy seats for last. When he returns, he has to wake everyone to get his job done, but he’s so friendly and animated, I doubt

anyone minds. After a few minutes I see another worker riding the same kind of machine approach. Briefly, they move together like practiced dance partners to complete what’s left, then the second guy moves on to another section. The workman parks his machine near a plexiglass enclosure displaying local artworks. Break time.

He speaks English and happily answers my questions. Ten years he’s been working night shift at the airport. ‘Good job,’ he says, nodding with enthusiasm. Good place.

Good country. He laughs when he tells me how his eyes water when he ventures into the sunlight on his day off. ‘Five more years,’ he says, his tone becoming more wistful. ‘Then no more Switzerland. Then I go home. I go back home.’

He finishes his break and re-mounts the gliding floor machine to continue, waving goodbye as he goes. I arrange a new bed on the freshly cleaned floor, relaxing into the cool surface. It’s surprisingly comfortable. I’m glad to have had the chance to talk with him there in a nearly empty airport in the hushed early morning hours, but I wish I would have thought to ask the man from Bangkok his name.

The Miss Pickles Chronicles, The Final Chapter It breaks my heart to tell you that my best buddy Miss pickles is no longer with us. Tears are rolling down my face as I write this, but I have to, more for myself than a tribute to my best friend. I haven’t been this devastated since I lost another best friend, my brother 25 years ago in a vehicle accident on a bow hunting adventure, writing about Miss Pickles may help ease the pain.

Sunday evening, November 22 I gave Miss Pickles a bone, unknown to us she took the bone across the road to bury it in a softer farmer’s field as the ground was frozen.

At the very wrong moment as she crossed the road to come home, a pickup hit her. As I lay on the couch watching TV; I heard the most frightening sound I have ever heard, the intense impact and her cries are sounds I will never get out of my mind.

My wife and I ran from the house in a panic. The young man driving the truck stopped and was already assisting her, I could tell as I ran to her side it was not good.

She was alive, but couldn’t move her back end and was in great pain.

Roxanne my wife ran and got her SUV and folded the back seats, I ran and got a back board and blanket. We put her into the SUV and raced to Vermillion Veterinarian clinic, a 45 minute trip from home. I lay by her side and comforted her in tears; she was very conscious and knew I was there but, worsened as we neared.

There were two veterinarians there that helped bring her inside. As she lay on the table we looked into each other’s eyes and knew it wasn’t good; that’s when I really broke down.

After inspection, the veterinarians told me what I didn’t want to hear, but knew, she was broken extremely badly, facing surgery in the thousands of dollars with no guarantees she would ever walk again or even make it.

All the money in the world was no object.

The obvious multiple internal injuries were showing signs, and the veterinarian said there was little hope, and there was only one option to end the suffering. I reluctantly agreed as I couldn’t bear seeing her that way.

As the veterinarian administered the medicine, I said my goodbyes, kissed her nose and had to leave, my wife Roxanne stayed by her side at the end.

I went outdoors and cried like a baby folks, I cannot express into words how that devastated me. We brought her home and laid her on her favourite couch in the shop with some of her favourite toys.

I don’t think I slept at all Sunday night; I was more than heartbroken. At first light, I began on her resting site beside the cement fish pond which she drank and played at, and close to our home.

As the ground was frozen solid I had to cut firewood to build a long fire to thaw the ground. She was always by my side with the quad and cutting firewood, so just that was a very hard thing to do.

After I lit the five foot long fire, I brought her outdoors and laid her by the fire and we shared her last campfire, as I cut firewood all morning I swear out the corner of my eye she would flash by helping me. After 4 hours the ground was thawed and I began building her final “campsite”, that took another 3 ½ hours, but with her company it kept me going, we had a good talk.

Roxanne came home from work to help and say her final goodbye. I lined her campsite with fresh straw as she loved sleeping in straw. I laid her down with a stuffed teddy bear she had since a pup, and her favourite deer antler shed.

After raking her campsite, we placed one of her biggest deer antler sheds she found all by herself this spring, as her marker. We wrapped the base with one of her old Red neck kerchief’s, the antler has “Miss Pickles” inscribed on it.

Ironically, as I placed the maker on her campsite, thru the tears, I watched two snow-

flakes float down from the heavens, one on the antler the other on her campsite. It was very fitting as she loved the snow, and we both were looking so forward to it. Monday morning her campsite was covered with a blanket of fresh snow, I know she would have loved pulling the dogsled I had gotten for her.

Now I have to rid my mind of the bad and sad and enjoy her fond memories and how happy she made me, everything reminds me of her. I cleaned up the yard, chew bones and the antler sheds. The antler sheds, made me smile as that was what she did.

I was looking so forward to putting on her

new large side backpack as she way grew out of her first one, and spend all spring together looking for antler sheds.

She was the smartest dog I ever met.

I have raised over 300 sled dogs, but Miss Pickles was so easy to train, she was not scared to try anything and took to it immediately. Except for staying off the road and vehicles, she had a thing against tires on any vehicle even a wheelbarrow. Before I acquired her when she was five weeks old, her brother got ran over and had to be put down, I truly think that was an issue in her mind.

Her 1st birthday was just on November 9.

Although Miss Pickles was only a year old, she gave me a lifetime of happy memories and unconditional love. She was supposed to be by my side thru my retirement and we had so many outdoor adventure plans.

No one will ever know how sad and heartbroken I am or how much I am going to miss my little buddy. Miss Pickles thank you for your love and friendship, although I know somehow you’re still by my side. I will miss you deeply and you will forever be in my memories and my heart.

Why Celebrate Christmas?

Before the very first Christmas celebrated there was a lot of fear, sadness, pain, warring and a sense of hopelessness.

On that first Christmas things changed and with that event came Hope and an opportunity for peace and for more love and less fear.

When you feel at your lowest, look back to that first Christmas where hope was born.

Healing broken hearts, putting joy back into lives and fear of the future was relieved.

No matter what religion, we all seek peace, hope and love.

In the midst of your deep sadness this year may you be able to experience the

“Litany of Hope” In this season of hope, may we carry in each of our hearts and in the hearts of whatever we call family the hope of healing and renewal.

On days when it is a challenge to face a world caught up in joy and lights and carols and gifts, May we receive the gift of understanding the depth of our loss and the hope of healing.

On days when it seems that no one understands the changes in our lives and the memories carried deep inside,, May we receive the gift of courage to speak with honesty and truth, to those who will listen.

When we are afraid to reach out and ask

for the help of neighbors, friends, co-workers and acquaintances, May we receive the gift of vulnerability to allow others to share pain with us and look together to the source of healing.

When in a fleeting moment we see our loved one out of the corner of our eye, smell his/her presence or hear his/her voice, May we acknowledge the mystery that is life and death and be comforted by a presence that we cannot name or fully know.

When we remember our role with those we cared for as wife, husband, partner, son, daughter, friend or confidante, May we honour the gift we gave and live in the hope that our loved one’ s transition was more whole because of our presence

Afterschool Care has had a ver y busy November. Their focus has been on International and Local community service projects.

The children spent the first part of the month collecting items to fill Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes. They filled one for a boy aged 9-11 years and one for a girl aged 5-9 years.

They also spent that time baking up a storm, in preparation for their bake sale. November 26 and 27 the children hosted a bake sale with all proceeds going to Plan Canada to buy bed nets for children in developing nations. The bed nets will help protect children in

those countries from Malaria, which kills 450,000 children annually. At the time of writing this the children had raised $142, which is enough to purchase 16 bed nets and they are only halfway through the 2nd day. Final calculations will not be made until the end of the night.

For their local act service the children are collecting food for the Vermilion food bank. They will be collecting non-perishable food items until Friday December 4. If you would like to make a contribution to their efforts please drop off a non-perishable food item in one of the boxes outside of the Kids Korner classroom, in JR Robson School.

In addition to the community service

projects the children have had a few field trips this month. We had a wonderful tour of the CSI farm at Lakeland College where we learned more about sustainable energy options such as solar panels.

They tried their bowling skills at Striker Lanes, and learned more about farm machinery at Webbs Machinery.

Lastly, we had a couple of our kids helping out at the Children’s Festival on November 21 teaching how to do a craft.

Thank you to all the members of the community that help make our program so successful by supporting our community service and allowing us to come for field trips. Without your support we

with them.

Norma Madaline Macleod Memorial On Monday, October 12, 2015 Norma passed away in the Vermilion Health Centre at the age of 82 years.

Norma is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Malcom “Mac” of Mannville and 4 children; Debbie Macleod (Garry Poliakiwski) of Mannville, Bonnie Macleod of Kamloops, Terri (Murray) Zelinski of Stony Plain and Scott Macleod of Chestermere.

As this is very common amongst seniors, please plan on attending.

On November 12, the Crib Doubles Tournament was held. Some regular players were missed as they were away or ill at the time. The winners were: 3rd – Frank & Mildred Molineax, 2nd – Marion & Mike Mayowski, 1st- Olga Mistal & Jane Mercier. The winners of the 50/25/25 were Julian K. & Sheila Duncan. Thanks to all the ladies bringing baking and assisting in the kitchen.

Two teams of floor curlers from Vermilion enjoyed their games in Mannville on November 18. The team comprising of Elsie Quickstad – skip, Cecil McCraethird, Gert Isert- second, and Hank Dirkson – lead came in second place.

Potluck had one of its best attendance of 61 people enjoying the food, companionship, and entertainment. The crowd enjoyed the skit by Ella Eyben, Helen King and Gert Isert and the harmony of the Seniors Choir.

Donna Eyben planned several tunes on the piano. Next potluck will have a Christmas theme on December 16th.

The next day, November 19, Bingo was held with a growing crowd. Next Bingo to be held December 17th.

There are still a few tickets for the Christmas Bus Tour going to the Muttart Conser vator y and Greenland Nursery. Tickets are $50. The bus will leave the Seniors Centre at 8:30 a.m. with a pick-up in Mannville Seniors Centre at 9:00. These tickets are available either at Ladies Wear in Craigs or the Senior Centre before noon Monday to Friday. It promises to be a nice day!

The Seniors Centre is also selling tickets for their Ukrainian Christmas Eve Su p p er to b e h e l d t h ere. A Day In The Life Of A Dentist

John Nelson, a local dentist who has been based in Vermilion for the last 10 years, believes that to be a good dentist it is impor tant to be a good communicator who can interact well with a diverse group of people, understand their needs and treat them in a safe and effective manner.

How long did it take you to become a dentist?

I personally took 10 years of university. However, one of those years was in engineering when I first left high sc hool. I received my Bac helor of Medical Science and Doctor of Dental Surgery degrees at the University of Alberta.

What attracted you to the profession?

I enjoy science. Initially I couldn’t decide between medicine or dentistry.

I talked to several people in both medicine and dentistry and even job shadowed before making my choice. I felt an attachment to dentistr y after my search.

What do you like most about the job?

Getting to know people in the communit y and area is one of the highlights of this career. I have been here for almost 11 years now and I get to know the families and people. I get to see both the parents and the children. I’ve been able to watch the children progress from toddlers into youth and youth into young men and women.

I get to know the families and interact with the community. The dentistry was exciting when it was novel and I was a new graduate working in Edmonton.

Now I prefer the feeling of being part

of the communit y and the relationships that develop.

Is it a stressful job?

It can be stressful. Some people when they come here have a fear of dentists, and if you are a remotely empathetic person you will feel that.

I feel their stress. You are a business owner as well and I think all business owners feel a general stress at various times.

Do people ever come up to you in public and ask you about their teeth?

Yes. I could be shopping or at an event and it is not uncommon to be asked about a dental-related subject.

I enjoy when people approach me.

Some to say thank you or some to let me know about a tooth problem. I can’t always help them when I’m in the grocery store aisle but I can try to help out the best I can.

What do you not like about the job?

I don’t particularly enjoy the business side of the job. I like the dentistry and the social side of being a dentist but not the business management side of things. I don’t enjoy paperwork, accounting, etc. Fortunately there are accountants and other professionals to help me out.

Can anybody do this job?

It ’s quite competitive to get into the university program. People with an aptitude for science and school can become a dentist if they have the passion to pur sue the profession. Some people realize in university that it’s not the career for them but fortunately there are many related careers that use the same courses for application such as doctor, optometrist, chiropractor, pharmacist, etc.

You need to be empathetic in these

professions. The science and schooling will only make you a great clinical dentist. You need to be socially-adept as well. I believe people can sense insincerity or apathy. We must care about people.

Dentistry has come a long way in last several years. We have learned much about the relationship between oral health and their overall health.

Heart disease, stroke, pneumonia and other respiratory disease, diabetes, premature and low birth weight deliveries are some of the interconnected issues between dentistry and medicine. As with many jobs, early detection of problems or regular maintenance to prevent problems is easier in the long run.

A lot of children are afraid of the dentist. Where do they get that fear

from?

Sometimes that fear can actually c ome from other peo ple. Children listen and feel anxiety from others.

It is always easier to gain a child’s trust and cooperation if they don’t have preconceived fears from others.

Dentistry is not like it was in the past.

We have different methods and equipment today. My preference would be to not share dental anxieties with kids.

We walk the kids through the procedure and normally everything goes well because dentistry is different today.

What makes a good dentist?

A good dentist can combine the knowledge to diagnose accurately, the manual dexterity and skill to treat properly and the social skills and empathy to relate to people and understand them and their needs.

Chamber Hosts Holiday Festivites

The Night Light Parade and the Festival of Trees wrapped up this weekend and despite a very “nerve racking” planning process, Vermilion and District Chamber of Commerce Office Manger, Michelle Feist said the events went great.

“I wasn’t expecting so many people,” said Feist referring to the huge attendance at this year’s kick-off of the Festival of Trees on Thursday evening right after the Night Light Parade.

“We had 17 floats this year, almost twice as many as last year,” said Feist She attributed the increase to a combination of two factors - the love of minions and the good

weather.

Float entrants embraced the Minion Mania theme wholeheartedly and for one hour on Thursday night the Town could have easily changed its name to “VerMinion” as hundreds of minions floated past parade watchers along the parade route.

First, second and third prizes were handed out to the following winners: 1st place: Eastalta Co-op, 2nd place: The Vermilion Voice and 3rd place went to the Vermilion Army Cadets.

During the Festival of Trees the Rotary Club of Vermilion raised over $1,000 for Haying in the 30’s selling cookies, hot chocolate, coffee and tea. The Rotary Club matches the funds raised up to a maximum of $1,000. Cookie event orga-

nizer, Susan McCulley said it is something the club has been doing since 2012.

“It’s a great organization,” said McCulley.

“It helps people out with costs associated with cancer treatments. It doesn’t have to be used just for travel.”

Feist said the donations for Santa’s Anonymous and the Vermilion Food Bank were very generous as well.

There were 25 trees in this year’s Festival at the Seniors’ Centre. 15 were up for auction and 10 were on display.

A silver collection at the door raised over $1,000 that will be donated to Santa’s Anonymous and the Food Bank. Proceeds of $1,700, from the auctioned trees will be donated to these

and various other charities including, the Ron Moses Christmas Dinner.

“We tried some new things this year, and I think they will work out really well,” said Feist, referring to a planter as well as a wreath that were available for auction alongside the Christmas trees.

“Someone suggested it to me and I think it’s a good idea to include next year.”

Also new this year were children’s activities including a youth stage performance, family crafts, and cookie decorating.

“We’re trying to make it a more family-oriented event,” said Feist.

The People’s Choice Tree Award will be announced next week.

4th Snowmobile Expo Returns To Vermilion

Vermilion Ridge Riders Submitted

The northeast Alberta snowmobile club of the year will host its 4th annual snowmobile expo Saturday December 5 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Vermilion Regional Centre.

The Vermilion Ridge Riders were honoured with that distinction by the Alberta Snowmobile Association. The recognition came in part for the expo and its contributions to the community says long time club member Jim Zadorozny.

“We picked the local Food Bank as a recipient because as a group we saw it as the group with an ongoing need,” he says.

Local businesses have supported in a number of ways. Some are exhibitors and others, such as Toma’s Fine Flooring, donated carpet scraps to put down under

the machine skis and tracks.

Community involvement extends to involving other local snowmobile associations in northeastern Alberta. “We’re also hoping to get some more clubs from Saskatchewan contributing and attending,” says Zadorozny.

Currently the show draws exhibitors and spectators from Edson in the west to North Battleford in the east, and from Calgary in the south to Fort McMurray in the north.

“There’s really something for every type of snowmobile enthusiast,” he says.

“The prime part of our expo are the classic and collectable machines. Some are antique, from the 1960s or earlier. Some are vintage, from 1969 to the mid 1980s.

So you can come in and see the sleds your grandparents ran.”

Then, there are the latest and greatest machines brought in by local dealers.

This includes the big names of Arctic Cat, Polaris, Ski-doo and Yamaha.

“You could also do some Christmas shopping for the snowmobile fan in your life as the dealers as well as other exhibitors will have all sorts of apparel and accessories for sale,” says Zadorozny.

Besides checking out the old and new in snowmobiles, attendees could also win a door prize. Draws will be done every half hour throughout the day.

“You could spend the day here. We have a concession, so you can take a refreshment break and then go back to checking out everything that will be here,” he says.

The Mitten Tree Tara Rozka was out promoting her sister Shaunda’s ‘Vintage 8’ globe bussiness at the Hallway of Handicrafts in the Lakeland Mall on Friday, November 27.

“Shaunda finds old globes in thrift stores and paints them and then recreates them decorating them with writing,” said Tara.

Tara’s mother Barb also displayed her handmade Christmas stockings. The Rozka ladies are from Vermilion and it was their first time to showcase their unique wares at a craft fair.

“We have been doing The Mitten Tree for the last five years now,” said Library Coordinator Michele Scott. “We’ve had volunteers this year that knitted hats, scarves and gloves for the local Santa’s Anonymous. This has been one of our best years. There are a few items that have been store bought, but almost everything has been hand knitted this year.”

The Mitten Tree will be on display at the Vermilion Public Library until December 15. All of the items on The Mitten Tree will be donated to Santa’s Anonymous. The introduction of Bill 6 by Labour Minister Lori Sigurdson on November 17 has created uproar among farmers who have taken to social media, registered for Town Hall meetings and organized rallies to voice their concerns.

If passed, Bill 6, the Enhancement Protection for Farm and Ranch Workers Act, would ensure that 60,000 farm and ranch workers would have the same basic protections that other workers in the province have had for decades in the following areas: Occupational Health and Safety Act; Workers Compensation Act; Employment Standards Code; and the Labour Relations Code.

MLA for Vermilion-Lloydminster Dr. Richard Starke said the Tory government from 2012-2015 had various drafts and pieces of legislation that were presented to the government caucus that were similar in nature.

“We would look at it and say if this was introduced and it is applied in the way it is suggested to the family farm we will have an uproar; do not do this because it will not be accepted in rural Alberta,” said Starke.

“So for that reason it never got introduced because it just simply was going to create the kind of uproar that we are seeing now.”

At the moment a significant part of the uproar is the speculation about how this Bill will apply to family farm operations.

“The Bill itself is very short, because it just says we’re going to remove farming and farm operations as being exempt from all these other legislations. Then you have to pick up these four or five pieces of labour legislation and say okay, how will this be applied in a family farm situation,” said Starke.

“The major concern that people have is the International Labour Organization of the United Nations and their rules and regulations with regard to child labour, and if those become fully applied people are legitimately asking the question - How will my children become involved in the farming operation I hope to leave them?”

Another big concern Starke said he is hearing is that if a neighbour comes over to help combine and harvest a field, the value of that unpaid work might be subject to a WCB premium.

Labour Minister Lori Sigurdson said in a statement on Nov. 27 that she has been listening to Albertans about what Bill 6 will mean to them regarding their family farms.

“I can assure you that the farm kids will continue to make their communities proud in their local 4-H program, just as they do in every other province.

“Neighbours and relatives will continue to help each other out in times of need, just as they do in every other province.

“I want to assure those families that Bill 6 does nothing more than bring Alberta’s safety standards on farm and ranching operations in line with every other province in Canada.”

Some changes are due to take effect as early as January 1, 2016 including an amendment to the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and Workers Compensation coverage which will become mandatory.

The cost of WCB if you have a hired farm worker and their salary is $50,000, would be just under $1,500, said Starke who added that the option to use WCB is already available to employers.

“Many employers choose to cover their workers using a more comprehensive coverage that in fact is more beneficial to the worker than WCB would be.”

However, at the moment employers can choose not to cover their workers. Mandatory WCB coverage would ensure all workers are covered.

Starke said this legislation has the potential to address that issue, but added that in a competitive labour market an employer needs to provide some sort of health and injury benefits to retain employees.

“The marketplace is basically looking after the pressure on providing that kind of protection for farm workers,” he added.

Sigurdson brought the case of Kevan Chandler to light when she faced a rally group of approximately 200 people that gathered at the legislature on Nov. 27.

Chandler was killed in a grain silo near High River nine years ago. Kevan’s employer did not have WCB coverage.

His wife Lorna and her children were not entitled to any benefits.

Sigurdson said the Bill provides protection for both the employer and the employee.

“Statutory protection of farm and ranch employees and the preservation of family farm traditions are complementary goals of Bill 6.”

Also in her statement Sigurdson said she encourages Albertans to keep providing feedback. Starke also encourages people to voice their concerns.

“If the government hears from large numbers of farmers with their concerns, one would hope they would listen to the people and act on that,” added Starke.

The last Town Hall session with any capacity left is in Athabasca on December 18. The December 8 session planned in Vegreville that Starke registered for, is full.

People can add their names to a wait list, as the Alberta government has added venues based on demand, Starke pointed out only five sessions were initially planned in questionable locations, and

most of these will be held after the close of the fall legislature on Dec. 3 which does not allow for meaningful consultation added Starke.

“None of them (sessions) were east of Hwy 2, where most of the agriculture happens in this province,” said Starke.

“We pushed for additional sessions which they did hastily arrange for, but they put them in halls that are too small and are forcing people to register for these meetings,” he added. “If you have a Town Hall meeting, you advertise it and people show up.”

People can also voice their concerns via email or fill out a survey at work. alberta.ca/farmandranch A Facebook page called Farmers Against NDP Bill 6 currently has about 32,000 members and an online petition to stop the Bill has over 17,000 names on it and another rally is being held on Nov. 30.

According to the Alberta government’s website, changes to Employment Standards and Labour Relations legislation will take effect in the spring of 2016 after consultations with industry, “regarding exemptions that may be needed for unique circumstances such as seeding and harvesting,” while occupational health and safety rules for farms and ranches will also be discussed with industry over the next year before being put into place in 2017.

Islamic Open House An Islamic Open House was held at the Vermilion Public Library on November 28.

Lloydminster Imam Tariq Azeem gave a presentation that explained the Muslim religion to interested parties that attended. Holy Quran Translations were on display along with informational boards.

Mr Azeem said he wanted to make clear the difference between the members of the Muslim communities here in Canada and the attackers who killed hundreds of innocent people. “The people who are committing these terrible atrocities, they may call themselves Muslims, but they have nothing to do with the religion. Terrorism in any form is against Islamic teachings and the practice of the Holy Prophet Muhammad,” said Azeem.

Lite Up Marwayne Community Christmas Event Submitted

Plan to attend the “Lite Up Marwayne Community Christmas Event” festivities on Sunday, December 6th, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Centre Street in Marwayne.

Our “ Lite Up Mar wayne” event is o r g a n ize d by vo l u nte er s fr o m t h e community and local businesses and has proven to be a well-attended time no matter what Mother Nature has to throw at us. This will be the 3rd year for our Lite Up Marwayne festivities

and we have been able to, with donations, ease a bit of the burden some of our local families go through during the Christmas Season. Last year we collected food, toys and over $1,500 in cash donations that we distributed to our three local churches.

In partnership with this event, our local senior’s will be supplying a warm building and hot cocoa, baked goods and ever y thing you need to doctor up that yummy hotdog. Toy and Food Bank boxes will be around town for

those wishing to help any families in need. Our local Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department will have the Fire Truck decorated and will be delivering a special surprise around 6:00 p.m.

Beck y and Travis Sher wood and the Brown Family have volunteered to provide Sleigh Rides for those brave enough to come out in the cold and we have been blessed again to have Tim & Sheila Gibbs donate their time by providing great music and entertainment.

We have been searching out Carol-

ers for our event so you may even get serenaded throughout the evening.

Our outdoor Fire Pits will be toasty warm and ready for you to roast your hotdogs or to just keep yourself warm.

Oh yes!!!!! We can’t forget to mention that a bit of street hockey will probably take place and that jolly fellow Santa Clause will be arriving to hand out Candy Canes to all the little ones.

Hope you are able to make it out to Marwayne on December 6th, to enjoy an evening of fun and food.

On November 17 & 18, 2015, Don Keenan from Fire Etc. came to visit Vermilion Play Development. Don talked to the children about fire alarms, fire safety and about having a safety fire plan with family if there ever was a fire. Keenan then dressed into all his fire fighting gear and explained how each piece of his gear protects him in a fire. Keenan then gave each child their own fire fighting hat, a fire safety colouring book and crayons. The children were even able to go inside a real fire truck and see how the lights look. The children thoroughly enjoyed their visit and thanked Don with hugs and waves goodbye. What a great experience for the children! Photo submitted

On November 17,2015, Council for the Town of Vermilion gave first reading to the 2016 Tax Rate Bylaw which gives approval to the 2016 Operating and Capital Budget and the five year budget plan.

School requisitions are not yet available and have been included as status quo. The Town of Vermilion collects the education tax on behalf of the province and has no control over the School Tax Rate. The municipality is requesting three per cent increase in the municipal levy resulting in a levy of $4,885,461. Vermilion River 4H Outdoor Club News

The Vermilion River 4H Outdoor Club has had a busy start to the club year. We started off in September at the gun range with rifle and trap shooting, learned how to identify edible plants, made fire starters, went through survival kits and built a fire with a flint.

We had a potluck to thank our former

leader Kim Roberts for her many years of dedication to our club.

Club meetings started on October 6 and will be on the first Tuesday of each month.

We held our elections and this year’s executives are President-Dan Hryciuk, Vice President,-Derek Hryciuk, Secretary -Parker Carlson and TreasurerEmma Cleland. Members and parents

also volunteered for other positions or on committees.

We will have three projects again this year, Shooting, Outdoor Survival & Recreation and Canine. Our Shooting Members have had three project days at the gun range.

Our Outdoor Survival & Rec have met at the Provincial Park for campfire cooking and a fun of geocaching.

Canine met at the fairgrounds in Oct to practice skills with their dogs and meet again Sun. Nov 22.

Thanks go out to the leaders and parents, but Extra Special Thanks to Jessica Hryciuk, Brianne Bellwood and AnnaMarie MacPhee who each spent an afternoon helping members with project days. We are looking forward to an exciting 4H year!

T h e 2 014 - 2 015 yearbooks have arrived! The 68-page, full-color book featuring the previous school year was created and completed by a handful of senior high students and an energetic team of new juniors. Marauder Graduates of 2015 whom purchased yearbooks may pick up their copies at the office. The juniors are back and this time as a knowledgeable, experienced crew, eager to mentor the newbies and begin the construction of the next yearbook. The cover has been chosen, and several pages are already under construction! Students will be able to place their orders for the 2015-2016 book in the near future.

The Elementary students were ver y excited to see the snow coming down on and their excitement quadrupled when Mrs. Moir delivered the crazy carpets to each classroom for them to use on the hill in the playground. With the snow and cold weather please remember to send ski pants, mitts and a toque everyday. Also students are only able to use crazy carpets on the hill during school time, so please do not allow your child to bring any other type of sled to school.

We hope you have marked your calendar for Tuesday, December 15th. Your evening can start at the Rec Centre enjoying a meal put on by our 2016 Grad Class followed by our Christmas concert titled ““The Voice-Christmas Edition” at 7:00 p.m. at the school.

Tickets for the Grad Banquet can be purchased by any Grade 12 student or at local businesses or the school office.

During the month of December, the secondary student’s union has plans to sell candy grams and are holding a gift exchange with any students in Grades 7-12 who wish to take part. They will also be planning another Spirit Week in December to include Candy Guess, Ho Ho Ho Trivia, Wrap-a-Friend (held in the gym), Christmas Dress Up, and lastly,

and enhancing their high school education as they earn credits at Lakeland College in various trades courses. Morgan Tkachuk and Karissa Whitlock earned diploma credits while studying aesthetics, while Brie Watson, Carter White, and Ethan Bourner will earn the same enrolled in Electrical.

My Grade 10 Multimedia class has officially begun capturing scenes and sights around the school by understanding the elements and principles of design and how to use digital single lens reflex cameras.

Experimenting with perspectives, lighting, and subject matter, students are just beginning to balance technical and creative aspects of photography.

On Thursday, November 26, J. R. hosted a pep rally in celebration of the successful football, cross-country, and volleyball seasons. Not even one third of the way

through the academic year, we’ve already had over one third of our students’ participation in our school athletics program!

Runners boasted of a large turnout and senior appearance at Provincials, football players stood proud for competing at the Provincial level for the first time since the 1980s, and volleyball featured several boys and girls teams, including the varsity girls’ team recently bringing home Silver after competing in Elk Point in Zones 2 weekends ago!

High school exam schedules will be finalized and released this week. Please keep in mind that the schedule will be strictly adhered to; students must be aware of the relevant dates and be diligent of exam attendance.

Crazy Carpet Days

the staff and students of St. Jerome’s walked to Holy Name Parish Church for our monthly mass. Thank you to the Grade 11 and Grade 5 students who participated in the mass through music and readings. The story of “Daniel and the Lion’s Den” was the focus of the mass. Father Roger encouraged all of us to be like Daniel, remaining faithful to God who will deliver us when we call on Him. Mr. Wheat’s Grade 8 students have been studying fables in their language arts class. In groups of two or three they wrote their own fables and then created a power point of the story. Over the last couple of weeks they have shared their fables with the elementary classes. Their fables were

fabulous and all of them had a very positive message to share with the younger students.

November Happigrams were held for the elementary students on November 30. The Grade 3 students made “Advent Calendars” for every class from kindergarten to Grade 8 to celebrate this season of “Waiting for Jesus”. The students shared the three ways Christians celebrate Advent; the Advent Wreath, the Jesse Tree and the Advent Calendar. They also sang the song “Children of the Light”. Congratulations to all the Happigram winners for their hard work, generosity, caring and enthusiasim for learning.

In Math, the Grade 1’s have been learning about their numbers to 20. They are learning to count by 2’s to 20, and 5’s and 10’s to 100. They are also busy mixing their primary colors in science, and learning about the colors of the rainbow!

The Grade 3 class with Mrs. Campbell are ready to start a Poetry Unit in language arts. They will be reading a variety of seasonal and non-seasonal selections and trying their hand at writing several different styles of poetry. With Christmas just around the corner, the students will be enjoying singing Christmas carols, making Christmas crafts and art projects and preparing for the Christmas concert.

working on parts of speech, genres in literature, author’s purpose. Their writing will be holiday themed as the holidays are just around the corner.

VIBE has partnered with FCSS to bring students to their Red Wagon group to lead activities for children aged 0-5.

This month, on November 19th, Aiden Marshall, Ainsley Bader, Kenra Pike, Saoirse Rosta, Jesse Morton, and Kurtis Thibault were the students who offered to join Mrs. Lorenson by volunteering. The theme was Winter Wonderland.

Once again a reminder that students will soon be visiting the curling and skating rinks. Please remember your child has to have a CSA certified hockey helmet to be able to participate on the ice. Bicycle, skiing, and ATV helmets are not allowed.

Another week and another two losses for the Tigers. It has been a frustrating last few weeks for the Tigers as they are falling further behind in the standings. The club, looking for a spark has acquired 19-year-old Goaltender Brendan Plant from the Lloydminster Bandits for future considerations. The Lashburn, Saskatchewan product is in his 2nd year in the NEAJBHL and is excited about the opportunity to join the Tigers. Through 5 games this season he sits with a record of 3-2 with a 2.51 goals against average and a.916 save percentage. A corresponding roster move can be expected in the coming days.

The Tigers welcomed Killam on Wednesday, November 18th and like the other two meetings it was one sided as Killam walked away with a 3-1 victory.

The Tigers managed 17 shots on goal that was the ultimate downfall and went over 20 minutes without recording a shot.

Nolan Blair was the lone bright spot as he

tallied for the jungle cats and goaltender Danton Brooks had a solid effort with 35 saves.

The Tigers hit the road on Friday, November 20th to face the Cold Lake Ice. The Tigers won the last time they faced the Ice, so they were ready for the challenge. The injury bug hit the team early and often as forward Nolan Blair and defenseman Layne Zack were both lost early to lower body injuries, and the team wasn’t able to rebound. The result, a 5-1 loss. Captain Spencer Ross notched his first of the season in the defeat.

News and Notes: The Tigers are also dealing with injuries to forward Carter Myhovich (lower body) and defenseman and assistant captain Jared Golinowski (lower body). The club returned to action Friday, November 27 at home against Wainwright for the first of a home and home.

The Myrnam 4-H Club held an organizational meeting on October 21 at the Myrnam arena. Monthly meetings will be held on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00 at the arena.

The club also held a bottle drive in Myrnam on November 6 and Saskiws, Dmytriws and Jaculas collected bottles in town. Thank you to everyone who donated bottles and cans for our club fundraiser. The club also held a fundraiser selling Stawnichy’s products that

S p o r t s D ay i n Canada took place on November 20.

Every student and staff member wearing a jersey at school got a point for their House League. In the afternoon, Mr. Beecroft and Mrs. Joa organized six different events for the kids to take part in – floor curling, speed stacking, relays, bench ball, scatter ball, and go noodle. Students spent about ten minutes at each event as they rotated through all six.

We thought we were seeing double on November 25, as the staff and students dressed up for Twin Day. Besides getting points for their House Leagues, everyone had a blast with their ‘twin’.

On November 27, teachers went to Wainwright for our second TES Team Day of this school year. Our keynote speaker was Garfield Gini Newman. After that, teachers were grouped according to their grade or subject area and worked together to make project-based activities.

Our two new district representatives are Seth Trynchuk and Taylor Pashulka and our new beef committee representatives are Tyson Pashulka and Bailey Dmytriw.

Thanks to all the parents who brought lunch and desserts for our 4-H families to enjoy.

The next meeting will also be a pizza night for the 4-H club members, date will be in early December. Members please bring your diaries.

December 21st is our annual Christmas party, which will be a toboggan party at the Campbell’s house and a gift exchange for the 4-H kids and parents.

Sports, Field Trips And Conerts

On the same day, at JR Robson, a conference was offered for our support staff. The day started with Catherine Samson speaking about the “7 Habits of Highly Humorous & Healthy People” and then went into a number of very engaging and meaningful sessions.

Roots of Empathy is a program developed to help build empathy (recognizing feelings in others) among children. The program consists of reading stories, completing activities, and watching a real baby develop over the year.

Baby visits are important to help model a positive emotional bond for the students. Last week, the Grade 2 students met their respective babies - Baby Allison with Mrs. Tupper, Baby Daphne with Mrs. Stachniak, and Baby Miller with Miss Kjenner. Students were excited to meet them. Thanks for joining the VES family.

Once a month, as a school staff, we get together for a potluck lunch in the library. It is such a great opportunity to connect and to enjoy some delicious food together. The meals vary from salad and sandwiches to ‘breakfast for lunch’. On November 26, we enjoyed time together over soup and sandwiches.

Christmas is right around the corner, and VES has a number of musical events coming up. On Dec. 2, the grade 6 students will be out caroling, starting at the Lodge, then heading downtown, and finally ending up at the mall. The Kindergarten concert will take place in the school gym on Dec. 9 at 7:00.

Grades 1-2 will have their concert at Lakeland College at 7:00 on Dec. 16 and Grades 3-5 will have theirs at the college at 7:00 on Dec. 17. There will be dress rehearsals for

the last two – Grades 1-2 at 9:15 on Dec. 15 and Grades 3-5 at 9:15 on Dec. 17 – if you want to watch them during the day in less crowded surroundings.
